JOLIET – Has a Frankfort Township man been wrongly charged with murder for opening his home to a despondent friend, or did he shoot her in the head and hide her body in the trunk of her car?

Judge Dave Carlson will decide that question in the bench trial of Brian Trainauskas, 40, who is accused of slaying Monica Timar six years ago. The trial began Tuesday.

Timar’s body was found the morning of Brian Jan. 23, 2009, Trainauskas inside an abandoned white Ford Mustang found in the 21000 block of South 78th Avenue. Timar was reported “missing [and] possibly suicidal” two days before, Will County Sheriff’s Deputy Ted Falasca told defense attorney James Sarros during testimony.

“Brian was friends with Miss Timar. He allowed her access to his home and al-

lowed other people access as well. He allowed her to use his computer,” Sarros said.

Sarros said chemical evidence recovered from Timar’s body does not belong to Trainauskas, but Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Dan Walsh said lab reports indicate the substances tested aren’t anyone’s DNA. “On Jan. 21 [the suspected date of Timar’s death], Trainauskas sold a Mossberg shotgun to a man ... Timar’s blood was later found in the barrel of that shotgun and her blood was found in a downstairs bathroom of his residence [in the 20800 block of South Acorn Ridge],” Walsh said.

Walsh also told Carlson an examination of Trainauskas’ computer showed Internet searches for “how to muffle a shotgun.”

Christopher Minnick, Timar’s brother-in-law, was the first witness to testify Tuesday. Minnick said Timar had never expressed suicidal thoughts to him and he was unaware of any issues before Timar’s girlfriend contacted him and his wife on Jan. 21.

Minnick said Timar was

“as upset as anyone else would be” over losing her job six weeks before her death.

Timar, 36, had worked as an environmental health and safety manager for Dearborn Wholesale Grocers in Chicago for more than five years.

Will County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil told The Herald-News shortly after Timar’s autopsy that it was “impossible” for her gunshot wound to be self-inflicted.

Minnick and other family members looked at a snapshot of Timar as a young girl with her parents, which they taped to the courtroom railing, as they listened to other testimony from Falasca and Scott Westphal, a neighbor of Trainauskas’.

Westphal was driving to work Jan. 21 on Route 30 near 78th Avenue when he saw Trainauskas walking on the sidewalk wearing a burgundy jacket and tan peaked cap, he testified. Westphal said he raised a hand to acknowledge his neighbor as he drove by, but Trainauskas didn’t look up.

Will County 911 software issues largely resolved; some bugs remain

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will County’s 911 dispatch system has been afflicted with computer crashes and system lockouts over the past few months because of a newly installed software upgrade.

Most of the issues are resolved, but some lingering minor bugs remain, said Steve Figved, system administrator for the county’s Emergency Telephone System Board – also known as the 911 board.

In the meantime, the ETSB is withholding $900,000 of its $2 million contract with Schaumburg-based Motorola Solutions until the entire system is operating smoothly. The company was hired by the board to install the PremiereOne software

upgrade that’s proved problematic.

ETSB members discussed at their April 23 meeting the possibility of hiring a third party to conduct an operation audit to ensure the system is operating properly before Motorola receives the remainder of the money, Figved said.

The software has been responsible for delayed responses, lost calls, information lapses and total system lock-outs experienced since November by local police, dispatch and fire officials, according to ETSB memos to Motorola.

New Lenox Fire Chief Steve Engledow said he’s happy with the progress that’s been made.

But the system platform still has some hiccups, he said.

“Currently I’m able to log in and stay logged into the

system. It doesn’t crash all the time like it used to,” Engledow said. “The mapping lags a bit.

It’s usually a half a block or so behind. When it tells you to turn left in 500 feet, you better be ready to turn sooner than that.”

Mokena Fire Chief Howard Stevens said the system overall is better. But now that the system is no longer crashing, fire and police officials can test and challenge the new system.

“As more problems come out, Motorola is working to fix them,” Stevens said.

It’s unclear how soon the system will be entirely bugfree, Figved said, but Motorola technicians are working diligently.

“We’re getting down to fewer and fewer problems,” he said.

Trainauskas allegedly gave statements to police that implicated him in Timar’s death, but an appellate court has ruled they can only be used if the defendant himself testifies.

Trainauskas also is accused of trying to hire another inmate at the Will County jail to kill an assistant state’s attorney. This inmate would also allegedly force another person to confess to Timar’s slaying, prosecutors say, and then subsequently kill that person.

That case awaits resolution of the trial for murder and concealing a homicide that could earn Trainauskas a life sentence behind bars.

The trial is expected to continue tomorrow.

Expo showcases middle school business talent, creativity

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Gompers Middle School eighth-grader Isaiah Anderson read an article earlier in the school year that recounted several children killing themselves or others with guns that weren’t properly stored.

He used the story as a springboard to create U.I. Safety, a business that would make guns safer by installing a device on guns that would recognize the person who owns the gun.

Meanwhile, Gompers seventh-graders Ricki Barham and Candy Verdin found a way video gamers on multiple gaming platforms could translate points they earned through gaming into virtual currency they could use to buy in-game upgrades or gift cards, without using their parents’ credit cards.

The three students formed their business ideas as part of an after-school program that promotes the entrepreneurial spirit in each child. And they presented their ideas along with dozens of other student entrepreneurs Tuesday evening during the fourth annual Joliet area Entrepreneurship Club Expo held at the University of St. Francis.

Gompers participated in the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce-hosted expo along with Dirksen, Elwood, Hufford, Rockdale, St. Raymond, Troy, William B. Orenic and Washington junior high schools.

“It’s really getting them to think about it now,” said Alita Guerrero, the students’ adviser at Gompers, about bringing younger students into the entrepreneurial process. “It’s a life skill. I mean, how do you assign a value to that?”

mittee and a representative from Lewis University, started the program in 2011 to engage younger students in entrepreneurial vision.

“It really captures their interest, promotes it and encourages them early on,” Weirs said, adding that Steve Jobs

and other famous executives started cultivating their first business ideas around the time of middle school.

The after-school program allows the students to start developing business plans as they work out their ideas. They receive guidance from school

staff, as well as business advisers from the “real world.”

Kim Nichols from Abri Credit Union has been a business adviser to students at Washington and St. Jude Catholic School in previous years.

“We come in and help them through the process,” she said.

“We help them with a marketing spin, how to sell it and they work on presenting it.”

Paige Vanderhyden, the director of workforce development at Joliet Junior College, also has helped students formulate their ideas and “elevator speeches” to help lure investors.

When asked about extend-

ing the entrepreneurial experience to younger kids, Vanderhyden said there was more out-of-the-box thinking.

“They’re just phenomenal on creativity,” she said. “Their thinking is limitless. They have no boundaries and they move forward with their plans.

And this is a great venue to do that.”

Learning experience Joliet firefighters sharpen their skills with live fire drill

By CHRIS LaFORTUNE clafortune@shawmedia.com ROCKDALE – The stinging smell of old, burning wood hung in the air Tuesday morning as Joliet fire crews moved in on the old house on Larkin Avenue.

Three companies of firefighters prepared to enter the home at 801 S. Larkin in Rockdale. Smoke trickled out from the roof line of the home as one crew raised a ladder.

Another crew moved in with hose lines to battle the fire inside, while another executed search and rescue.

The department was using the old home for training. Alliance Fence wanted to tear down the house to build a storage facility, said Brian Plyer, training chief with the Joliet Fire Department, and contacted the department to see if it wanted to use it first.

The department was happy to take the company up on the offer.

“This keeps everybody’s skills up, so when they do have a house fire, they’re able to operate at maximum performance,” Plyer said.

Training with live fire reinforces a firefighter’s basic skills, Plyer said. And with fewer home fires these days, those skills always need sharpening.

The department usually does at least one of these live fire drills annually, Plyer said. The past three years, it’s done two each year. The department will use the Larkin Avenue house for training three days this week, until Thursday.

The training takes months of planning, first to get state permits, Plyer said. The department has to assess an offered home, to make sure that it can use it for training and to ensure it’s not too close to other residential structures or schools.

a group of firefighters come to the house a few days early to prepare rooms for the controlled training burns, Plyer said. Aluminum sheeting is tacked to the walls and ceilings of the rooms firefighters will use, to ensure the controlled fires do not spread through the rest of the structure.

with, Plyer said. Hay and discarded wooden pallets are used in the controlled burns.

“It’s taking the guys’ safety into consideration,” Plyer said. “The biggest thing is, we don’t want anybody to get hurt.”

On Tuesday, crews were separated into three teams: fire attack, ventilation, and search and rescue. A steel apparatus door locked in by blocks of wood stood in for the door of the home, which was already missing.

A pair of firefighters worked to pry open the door before crews, in full gear, moved inside the house with hose lines. In just minutes, the controlled burns were put out, and firefighters exited the house, pulling out hoses, splashing through water pooled in the grass and on the rocky ground.

After a quick review, the teams rotated jobs and started all over.

The live training is valuable, said Noah Klima, an apparatus operator and paramedic with the Joliet Fire Department. If firefighters make a mistake while training, they have a chance to review what went wrong in ways they never could with a real fire.

“It allows us to get a lot of constructive criticism from the chiefs, the captains and the lieutenants,” Klima said.

Joliet Area Suzuki Strings closing after 43 years

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – After 43 years and hundreds of violin, viola and cello lessons and concerts, Joliet Area Suzuki Strings is closing its doors.

“We just cannot financially sustain it anymore,” JASS founder and director Mary Smelser said. “Our numbers have been gradually going down over the last four or five years. Last year, we were down to 40 students, and now we’re at about 25. You just can’t exist with that.”

Smelser said she assumes the economy has caused parents to cut private music education out of their budgets. She hopes the trend reverses itself, but for JASS, the formal program is over at the end of the spring session.

Many have benefited from the lessons and the camaraderie over the years. Betsy Burnett, of Lisbon, has seen two of her children blossom in the program. Her daughter Winter graduated from JASS and now plays violin in college and is

second chair in a civic orchestra.

Her younger daughter, Emily, 13, began taking lessons with the group’s instructor Pat Lackey when she was 5.

“I learned by listening,” Emily said, “and later, I learned to read music. It was easier to listen when I was that young.”

Betsy said her mother, Mary Palmer, played the viola and accompanied the girls to their lessons. The lessons were wonderful, Betsy said, plus the students all joined together and played as an orchestra every Thursday.

“They get the opportunity to play different pieces of music in an orchestra-type setting,”

New Lenox passes balanced budget Outlook good, village finance director says

By SARWAT S. AHMAD Shaw Media correspondent NEW LENOX – The village of New Lenox has again passed a balanced budget as it continues to slowly recover from the recession.

Village trustees Monday night unanimously passed the proposed 2015-16 budget. The budget shows expected overall revenues and expenditures at $86.7 million and $88.5 million, respectively.

However, the village’s operating budget estimates revenues of $40.1 million and expenses of $37.4 million.

The operating budget includes day-to-day expenses and revenues, such as sales tax, property tax, permit fees TRAVEL

and motor fuel tax and covers expenses such as salaries and benefits, water costs, minor water system maintenance and road maintenance.

The overall budget includes fund-to-fund transfers, bonds, grant revenues and capital projects, such as the wastewater treatment plant No. 2 project.

For fiscal 2014-15, the village outlined operating budget revenues and expenses of about $36 million.

The new budget goes into effect Friday, with a beginning balance of $33.7 million and an expected end balance of $31.9 million on April 30, 2016.

“It’s balanced, which is always a good thing,” Finance Director Kim Auchstetter said. “The village is still seeing growth, so we are budgeting for growth.”

The village expects to see about 173 more homes in the new fiscal year, the average for the past three years, Auchstetter said. More homes mean more building permit reve-

nues, she said.

Auchstetter said she is proud the village has not only achieved its goal of maintaining three-month reserves in its general fund, but is expecting to grow that to four-month reserves in the new fiscal year.

From about 2008 to 2011, with the economic downturn, the village did not meet its 90day reserve goals, she said.

“If the economy changes again – for example if those 173 homes don’t happen – we have funding on hand for any fluctuations,” Auchstetter said.

Last year, the village used about $2.9 million reserves in its general fund to purchase the BP gas station and three adjacent businesses on Route 30 and Cedar Road, according to Auchstetter’s budget report.

With the approval of the new budget, the village will move forward with contracts with CVS Pharmacy and Fleckenstein’s Bakery, which will cover most of the village’s land purchase and demolition costs, according to the report.

The village also has budgeted about $265,000 for property purchased as part of its planned extension of Nelson Road between West Haven Road and West Illinois Highway.

The village’s long-planned multi-million dollar wastewater treatment plant No. 2 expansion is also reflected in the new budget, at an expense of about $9.5 million. The village started applying for a loan from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to help cover the cost of the estimated $19 million project.

A notable change in the budget is the removal of the old Garbage Disposal Fund, with the village no longer levying property taxes for garbage services. Last fall, the village entered into a 10-year contract with Nu-Way Disposal for garbage pickup. Residents are billed directly by Nu-way.

The budget also reflects a 2.5 percent increase in union and nonunion salaries to adjust for increases in cost of living, as per collective bargaining agreements approved last year.

Bat tests positive for rabies in Frankfort lleonecross@shawmedia.com FRANKFORT – A live bat trapped while hanging onto the base of a tree in Frankfort has tested positive for rabies – making it the first positive case in Will County so far in 2015.

The live bat was trapped by Will County Animal Control in the 500 block of Aberdeen, according to the Will County

Health Department. The county health department received confirmation Monday from a state laboratory in Chicago that the bat tested positive.

More than 32 percent of the state’s 40 wildlife rabies cases in 2014 came from Will County, according to a news release.

Will County broke a record last year for the number of confirmed cases, having recorded 13 rabies cases last

year from May 12 to Sept. 24.

There were six bats confirmed rabid in the county in 2013, down from a then-record 12 positive cases in 2012, according to data.

Rabies was reported in 16 Illinois counties a year ago, but no other jurisdiction reported more than six confirmed cases. All of the state’s 2014 confirmations involved bats, according to the news release.

Motorcyclist, pedestrian die in Plainfield collision THE HERALD–NEWS PLAINFIELD – Two people were killed early Tuesday morning after a crash in Plainfield.

Sean Fitzpatrick, 27, of Plainfield was driving on a motorcycle on Route 59 near Lockport Street in Plainfield when he lost control of the bike, a 2007 Yamaha, and struck a pedestrian, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

He was pronounced dead at 12:39 a.m. at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

The pedestrian was wellknown Plainfield resident Randy Lambert, said Michael Lambert, his younger brother. Randy, 56, was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:55 a.m.

“We’re doing fine, under the circumstances,” Michael said.

Plainfield police were investigating the crash, according to the coroner’s office. Police announced early Tuesday evening that initial investigation at the scene was complete and Route 59 was open again.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

Plainfield Sgt. Mike Fisher said preliminary investigation shows the motorcyclist was heading north on Route 59 when the crash occurred.

The crash caused Plainfield School District 202 to close Plainfield Academy on Tuesday. The crash affected access to the area near and along Route 59, according to an email from the school.

“The accident does not involve any Plainfield Academy students or staff. We apologize for any inconvenience this will cause and will update you later with more details,” the district said in the email.

Randy worked with his mother, Mary Alice Lambert, at her shop, The Tawny Tortoise, in downtown Plainfield.

The Lambert family is one of the oldest families in Plainfield.

“Randy was a real nice guy,” said Stuart Littell, owner of Moe Joe’s restaurant, located near the Lamberts’ shop. “He was a big fan of our buffalo wings. He would carry out to eat [at the shop].”

Littell said Randy was involved in projects in Plainfield, and helped to preserve the nostalgia for the historic downtown district created several years ago.

“He was actively involved in helping keep promotions alive with downtown Plainfield,” Littell said.

Littell also said many people in the downtown area showed their support for the Lambert family Tuesday.

LOCKPORT – Police say a would-be robber walked out of a fast food restaurant in Lockport to find officers waiting for him Monday.

phone. This means that a person should not have to zoom in or pinch and pull the screen to read the content. To see if a website is mobile friendly, use a mobile site tester online.

There are two ways to have a mobile optimized website. The first is a “bandaid” solution. It is having a separate mobile companion site. It is usually an abbreviated version of the desktop site. It typically has the most commonly viewed information, such as address, hours, and click to call function. The better long term solution is having a responsive design. A responsive website is a site that adjusts the content to be viewable on any size screen. The advantage is having all of the content on a website available to people viewing it on a mobile device.

Unless a business wants to see a decline in traffic (and more importantly potential customers) to their website, it is critical to have a mobile friendly website. If Google penalizes a website for not being mobile optimized, it will definitely result in less visits because more than half of searches are taking place on a mobile device and over 90% of people searching do not go past the first page of search results.

JOLIET – Ever since Jeanell Dohrman was a freshman, she wanted to be a special education teacher.

Dohrman, a Joliet Central High School senior, said she initially wanted to go into nursing, but became interested in special education after a teacher introduced her to the field. Her aspiJeanell rations were Dohrman recognized this month when she was named one of 200 members of the Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois Class of 2015.

Winners were chosen from a pool of 1,682 candidates and will be part of a program that provides tuition assistance to each as they pursue an undergraduate education.

“Once I got my letter in the mail, it was definitely a big moment for me and my family,” Dohrman said.

Golden Apple, a nonprofit organization that supports educators, offers the Golden Apple Scholars program each year. More than 800 Golden Apple Scholars are now teaching in more than 500 schools of need, according to the organization’s website.

The program begins the summer after high school graduation and continues throughout a member’s undergraduate years. Scholars benefit from four teaching internships, ongoing academic and career mentoring, as well as course work on teaching.

Dohrman said she applied to become a Golden Apple Scholar by writing four 500word essays and gathering references from three teachers. Those teachers are Brian Reed, Erin Douglas and Na-

Joliet students learn job skills

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Barb Mullin doesn’t teach for a living – she works at a bank – but she walks away from talking with students about what it takes to succeed in the real world with a deep appreciation for the craft.

Mullin, a Standard Bank & Trust branch manager, came Tuesday morning to Hufford Junior High School to help teach students how to solve problems when working a job and how to think creatively.

The students were being taught by volunteers from local businesses and Junior Achievement of Chicago on Monday and Tuesday to equip them with skills needed for career success.

Mullin has volunteered to teach students in first through fifth grades, but Tuesday was the first time she taught eighth-graders. Mullin was one of several volunteers lending their professional experience

“If you’re saying sorry, it’s just a polite way of saying no … you might lose that customer’s business,” Mullin said.

Students discussed the consequences of their decisions.

Mullin encouraged them to go with choices that would have

more positive outcomes.

“You better think through what you’re doing with your job, because it could cost you your job or create problems with your business,” Mullin said.

lleonecross@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – Twelveyear-old Alan Guzman is on his way to becoming a community leader, having spent this past school year volunteering with community organizations, after-school programs and other activities.

He said it’s all thanks to the L.E.A.D. club at William B. Orenic Intermediate School – a student club in its first year that focuses on leadership, empathy, action and dedication.

He and two other members of the L.E.A.D. Club spent Tuesday afternoon at Crossroads Elementary School in Shorewood helping children with disabilities and special needs train ahead of this weekend’s Special Olympics competition.

“It’s really helping me become a leader at my school,” Alan said. “But it’s also fun, too, getting to hang out with new friends.”

Alan, Zach Roberts, 11, and Brianna Reese, 10, led stretching exercises in the gym Tuesday, shortly before the 30-plus students broke up into different groups so they could practice softball and tennis ball throws, running and long jumps.

While Zach and Brianna helped with running and other activities, Alan teamed up with Lawson Sizemore, 12, who has muscular dystrophy and uses a motorized wheelchair, to practice his tennis ball throws. Sizemore is competing in that category at the Special Olympics competition in South Holland this weekend.

Alan and Lawson said they like hanging out together. The two know each other from previous classes.

“We stood next to each other in choir,” Lawson said.

Betsy and Emily said they were sad to hear that JASS had to close.

“It’s a place where I can be creative,” Emily said, “and where I can be myself with it and express myself through music.”

The Suzuki method of learning to play a musical instrument involves exposing

students to music in the same way they are exposed to language – at a very young age and all-encompassing.

Smelser first heard of the method at a concert of visiting Japanese students.

“I was absolutely bowled over,” she said.

Smelser was a classically-trained violinist. A child prodigy, she was accepted at Julliard School of Music at age 10 and later graduated from Northwestern University. She taught instrumental music and was orchestra director of Joliet Public Schools District 86 for 27 years, where she introduced the Suzuki method.

She also used the meth-

od with her private students and began Joliet Area Suzuki Strings in 1972 with 24 students. It grew over the years to a peak of 100 students before the recent recession.

“It was a very big success,” she said. “Their parents would take the lessons with them. That’s why the program works so well.”

Its teachers over the years included Mandy Jahn, Colleen Lawrence, Felicia Peterson, Melissa Okrey, Clair Halbur, Paul Kubacki, Emillie Blair and Brittney Parzych.

Nancy Fiske, Andrea Withers, Pat Lackey and Smelser are teachers today, but this is Withers’ and Lackey’s final term.

They opened Juliet’s in October 2014 with a dream of revitalizing the downtown scene. As Will County natives, they have strong personal interests in the area.

Nonviolent offenders push prison capacity REEDER REPORT Scott Reeder SPRINGFIELD – I hurried onto the train Thursday, glanced down at my boarding pass and saw I was seated next to a newly released inmate.

The cheap sneakers, ill-fitting clothes and cellblock tats gave it away.

I knew I was in for a long journey from Chicago to Springfield.

The Illinois Department of Corrections gives prisoners who have served their time Amtrak tickets allowing them to return to their families.

The young man sitting next to me had just finished serving four years at the Danville Correctional Center.

He had visited his mother and brother in Chicago and was heading to Springfield to live with his girlfriend.

“When I got home, I found out my little brother was hooked on crack cocaine. Can you believe that? He’s just 17, and he’s hooked on crack,” my seatmate said as he popped open a can of Miller High Life stashed in a bag under his seat.

I said, “Uh huh” and tried to bury my nose a little deeper in my book.

Prisoners going free is a subject that makes us uncomfortable.

Why? It’s sometimes hard to know what to say.

What do you say to someone who has just been sprung? Congratulations? Best wishes? Keep your nose clean?

In Illinois, 47 percent of inmates released end up returning to prison. That’s an embarrassment. No nation locks up a higher percentage of its citizens than the United States. Is the land of the free now the home of the incarcerated?

Violent criminals belong behind bars. But so often, the folks

we lock up aren’t dangerous.

In fact, 45 percent of Illinois inmates are locked up for nonviolent offenses.

And the Illinois Department of Corrections has 48,000 people locked up in a system designed to house 32,000. That’s a dangerous situation not only for convicts but also for staff.

Remember, just about everyone who goes to prison gets out.

And seldom does someone leave prison a better person than when they went in.

But by the same token, no one ever left prison wanting to go back. The young man who was sitting next to me is a good case in point.

“I’ve got to look after my baby and my baby’s mamma now. I’m willing to do any kind of work. I’m even willing to work at Burger King,” he said.

He then glanced at my shirt and tie. “Do you think you could get me a job? I’m moving to Springfield because I want to start over,” he said as he took a swallow from his third beer.

Sadly, there are a lot of jobs this young man won’t be eligible for because of his felony conviction. It is difficult for felons to become barbers, nail technicians and a whole host of other licensed vocations.

It’s time to lift those restrictions. After all, the harder it is for someone to find a job, the more likely it is they’ll return to crime.

It’s also time to look at reducing sentences for nonviolent offenses. The Illinois Senate’s vote last week to reduce penalties for having a small amount of pot is a step in the right direction.

We need to look at intelligent sentencing alternatives for other crimes as well.

Crime may not pay, but neither does the way Illinois has been dealing with nonviolent offenses.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR McDermed pushing for severance agreements transparency To the Editor:

I recently passed legislation out of the Illinois House to address confidentiality clauses in public body severance agreements. These agreements use taxpayer funds, either in part or in whole, and as such should be subject to transparency.

Taxpayers have a right to know how their money is being spent. It has become especially clear in the last few years that abuse and scandals occur that take advantage of such confidentiality clauses.

My bill, should it become law, would place all settlement and severance agreements under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. Representative Kosel, my predecessor, attempted to pass similar legislation in the previous General Assembly in response to the Metra severance agreement scandal that gave former CEO Alex Clifford more than $700,000. Her bill unanimously

passed the House but, unfortunately, died in the Senate.

Last year, the College of DuPage awarded one of the largest severance agreements ever given to a public employee in Illinois to outgoing college president Robert Breuder – $763,000. Since then, local, state and federal prosecutors have opened investigations into the COD’s spending practices. What happened with the College of DuPage proves that not only this still is an issue but it’s also an important one that needs to be addressed properly.

I urge you to contact your state senator and ask him to give his support to this bill.

Down in Springfield, we don’t get a lot right, but we can get it right on this issue.

BERNICE M. HARRELSON Bernice M. Harrelson, nee Burgett, age 90, passed away Sunday, April 26, 2015, at Symphony of Joliet.

Survived by her two sons, Robert (Joy) Harrelson and Joseph Harrelson; two grandsons, Matthew Harrelson and Mark Harrelson. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Born in Jackson Township, IL a Joliet resident most of her life. Bernice was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. She enjoyed watching sports and was an avid Cubs fan.

JOSEPH A. KAMINSKAS SR. Joseph A. Kaminskas Sr., age 51, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 24, 2015, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center with his loving family close by his side.

Joey was born in Joliet and raised in Rockdale, IL. He graduated from Rockdale Grade School and Joliet West High School, class of 1981. Joey was employed by Reichhold Chemical in Morris, IL, for 30 years. He was a volunteer firefighter for 34 years with the Rockdale Fire Protection District.

Joey was a member of the Illinois Live Steamers Club and a train enthusiast.

He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and loved spending time with his family and friends. Joey also enjoyed coordinating the monthly Kaminskas family dinners. He was extremely proud of his children and their accomplishments. Joey will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Brittney Nicole Ridgley, age 24, of Custer Park, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 24, 2015, due to consequences and the result of a recent battle and addiction to heroin.

Born December 14, 1990, in Morris, Brittney Nicole is a daughter of Rodney William, Sr. and Angela Ridgley of Custer Park and Renee (Bondlow) Miller of Florida. She was raised in a Christian home, where she was taught and understood a strong sense of Christian beliefs and fundamentals. Brittney during her school years was a cheerleader and played volleyball. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed four-wheeling.

Prior to her battle with addiction, Brittney was always happy, had a vibrant personality and was always helping others. This showed through in her certification as a nursing assistant and phlebotomist. Brittney cherished her younger siblings and was a wonderful mother who dearly loved her son. She will forever be remembered for her beautiful smile.

Born January 28, 1953, to John and Retta (Richa) McDermott. She was an accomplished Seamstress for all of her adult life.

She also worked for Weight Watchers for 20 years as a receptionist.

She loved gardening, baseball and hockey but, her greatest passions were her 7 grandchildren.

Group starts new bid to put redistricting on 2016 ballot

CHICAGO – A coalition of business, clergy and civic leaders has launched a petition drive and fundraising efforts for a 2016 ballot question aimed at changing how Illinois draws political boundaries, an initiative group officials said Tuesday builds on a previous failed attempt.

Independent Maps, which wants to take the mapmaking process out of the hands of politicians and give it to an independent commission, said the state’s once-a-decade process of redistricting is too political. The group bills itself as nonpartisan and board members include former Tribune Co. CEO Dennis FitzSimons, former White House chief of staff Bill Daley, the Rev. Byron Brazier of Chicago’s Apostolic Church of God and former Playboy Enterprises CEO Christie Hefner.

The Independent Map Amendment would establish an 11-member commission with geographic and demographic diversity and it would require seven commissioners to approve a map, including at least two Democrats and two Republicans. A review panel, chosen at random from a pool of registered voters who adhere to “standards of ethical conduct,” would select commission members.

State to extend Get Covered PR contract by two months

CHICAGO – Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration is negotiating a two-month contract extension with the public relations firm that handles the state’s promotion of health insurance coverage, an indication of the Republican governor’s cautious co-existence with President Barack Obama’s health care law.

At a meeting Tuesday, federal investigators said the CTA shares in the blame for the accident in which the exhausted train operator fell asleep on her 12th straight day of working primarily night shifts. Investigators also said the CTA failed to spot hazards in the station’s design that meant track-side emergency braking systems and the platform bumper could not stop the train at the speeds permitted in the station.

A $25.6 million contract with St. Louis-based FleishmanHillard to promote Get Covered Illinois, the state’s branded outreach campaign, expires Thursday.

Chief marketing officer Jose Munoz told The Associated Press the state hopes to extend the contract to June 30 to make sure the program is sustainable. He didn’t specify how Illinois will handle the work after that.

Under the health law’s expansion of coverage, more than 625,000 Illinois residents have gained insurance through Medicaid and another 350,000 bought private insurance on the new subsidized marketplace.

CHAMPAIGN – A report from a national professors group said the University of Illinois wrongly rescinded a job offer for a professor after he made critical and profane comments about Israel on Twitter.

Prison prepping for changes for mentally ill inmates

PONTIAC – A group of Illinois lawmakers has gotten a look at how the Pontiac Correctional Center is preparing for an overhaul to treat mentally ill prisoners.

The Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers said lawmakers toured the maximum-security facility in Pontiac on Monday. A former dining hall is being turned into a mental health treatment area, and lines of tape on the floor show where offices and rooms will be located.

Renovations are expected to begin in December, and warden Randy Pfister said they could finish in 18 months. Sixty-five

inmates are in the prison’s mental health unit, although more than 580 prisoners are deemed worthy of treatment.

The $2.5 million in changes at the Pontiac facility are part of an ongoing federal lawsuit seeking better care for Illinois’ mentally ill inmates.

Iowa man painting town water tower dies after fall

DAMIANSVILLE – Officials said an Iowa man has died after falling while painting a water tower with a work crew in the southern Illinois town of Damiansville.

The Clinton County Coroner’s Office identified the victim of the Monday afternoon accident as Dustin L. Spilman, 31, of Ventura, Iowa. The Belleville News-Democrat said he was part of a crew from Elgin, Iowa, hired to paint the water tower.

Spilman was pronounced dead at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese.

Coroner Phillip Moss said Spilman apparently was working his way to the top of the water tower, about 100 feet high, when he fell.

Police clash with Baltimore protesters for a second night The ASSOCIATED PRESS BALTIMORE – A line of police behind riot shields hurled smoke canisters and fired pepper balls at as many as 200 protesters Tuesday night to enforce a citywide curfew, imposed after the worst outbreak of rioting in Baltimore since 1968.

Demonstrators threw bottles at police, and picked up the smoke canisters and hurled them back at officers.

No immediate arrests or serious injuries were reported, and the crowd rapidly dispersed. It was down to just a few dozen people within minutes.

The clash came after a day of high tension but relative peace in Baltimore, as thousands of police officers and National Guardsmen poured in to prevent another round of rioting like the one that rocked the city on Monday.

It was the first time since the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968 that the National Guard was

called out in Baltimore to prevent civil unrest.

The racially charged violence on Monday was set off by the case of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man who died of a spinal-cord injury under mysterious circumstances while in police custody.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said 2,000 Guardsmen and 1,000 law officers would be in place overnight.

“This combined force will not tolerate violence or looting,” he warned.

In a measure of how tense things were on Tuesday, Baltimore was under a citywide 10 p.m.-to-5 a.m. emergency curfew. All public schools were closed. And the Baltimore Orioles canceled Tuesday night’s game at Camden Yards and – in what may be a first in baseball’s 145-year history – announced that Wednesday’s game will be closed to the public.

The streets were largely calm all day and into the evening, with only a few scattered arrests.

About 15 minutes after the 10 p.m. curfew took effect, police moved against protesters who remained in the street in the city’s Penn North section, near where a CVS pharmacy was looted.

Standing shoulder to shoulder, police in riot helmets began advancing toward the demonstrators in an effort to push them back. Some protesters lay in the street or hurled bottles toward the police.

Then police used pepper balls and smoke.

Around the same time and in a different neighborhood, police tweeted that they were making arrests in South Baltimore after people started attacking officers with rocks and bricks. At least one officer was reported injured.

Monday’s outbreak of looting, arson and rock- and bottle-throwing by mostly black rioters erupted just hours after Gray’s funeral. It was the worst such violence in the U.S. since the unrest last year over the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.

By KATY DAIGLE The Associated Press PASLANG, Nepal – There is almost nothing left of this village but enormous piles of broken red bricks and heaps of mud and dust.

One of those piles was once Bhoj Kumar Thapa’s home, where his pregnant wife pushed their 5-year-old daughter to safety in a last, desperate act before it collapsed and killed her during Saturday’s earthquake.

On Tuesday, Thapa and others in Paslang still were waiting for the government to deliver food, tents – any kind of aid – to this poor mountain village near the epicenter of the quake that killed more than 4,700 people, injured over 8,000 and left tens of thousands homeless.

“When I got home, there was nothing,” said Thapa, an army soldier. “Everything

was broken. My wife – she was dead.”

He was put on leave from his army unit to mourn, one of the few Nepalese soldiers not deployed in the country’s massive rescue and recovery operation. But instead of sadness, there is anger.

“Only the other villagers who have also lost their homes are helping me. But we get nothing from the government,” Thapa said.

An official came, took some pictures and left – without delivering anything to the village of about 300 people north of Kathmandu, he said.

“I get angry, but what can I do? I am also working for the government,” Thapa said. “I went to ask the police if they could at least send some men to help us salvage our things, but they said they have no one to send.”

Paslang is only 1.8 miles up the mountain from the town

of Gorkha, the district headquarters and staging area for rescue and aid operations.

But the villagers, who have no idea when they might get help, still are sleeping together in the mud and sharing whatever scraps of food they can pull from beneath their ruined buildings. Three people in the hamlet have died.

Officials and foreign aid workers who have rushed to Nepal following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake are struggling against stormy weather, poor roads and a shortage of manpower and funds to get assistance to the needy. On Tuesday, the district managed to coordinate 26 helicopter trips to remote villages to evacuate 30 injured people before a major downpour halted the effort.

“We need 15,000 plastic tarps alone. We cannot buy that number,” said Mohan Pokhran, a district disaster management committee member.

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – Nigerian troops rescued almost 300 girls and women during an offensive Tuesday against Boko Haram militants in the northeastern Sambisa Forest, the military said, but they did not include any of the schoolgirls kidnapped from Chibok a year ago.

The army announced the rescue on Twitter and said it was screening and interviewing the abducted girls and women.

Troops destroyed and cleared four militant camps and rescued 200 abducted girls and 93 women “but they are not the Chibok girls,” army spokesman Col. Sani Usman told The Associated Press.

Almost 300 schoolgirls were kidnapped from the northeastern town of Chibok by the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram in April 2014. The militants took the schoolgirls in trucks into the Sambisa Forest. Dozens escaped, but 219 remain missing.

The plight of the schoolgirls, who have become known as “the Chibok girls,” aroused international outrage and a campaign for their release under the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls.

Their kidnapping brought Boko Haram to the attention of the world, with even U.S. first lady Michelle Obama becoming involved as she tweeted a photograph of herself holding the campaign sign.

Boko Haram has kidnapped an unknown number of girls, women and young men to be used as sex slaves and fighters.

Many have escaped or been released as Boko Haram has fled a multinational offensive that began at the end of January.

A military source who was in Sambisa told The Associated Press that some of the women rescued Tuesday fought back, and that Boko Haram was using armed women as human shields, putting them as their first line of defense.

The Nigerian troops managed to subdue them and rounded them all up, and some said they were forced to fight for Boko Haram, said the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Boko Haram also has used girls and women as suicide bombers, sending them into crowded market places and elsewhere.

A month ago the Nigerian military began pounding the Sambisa Forest in air raids.

Minooka rolls past Plainfield South in opener

By TIM TIERNEY Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Neither Minooka nor Plainfield South had played in five days when they opened their Southwest Prairie Conference baseball series Tuesday at South.

The break wasn’t helpful for either team, because both had momentum after they took two of three from conference rivals last week.

Minooka was able to stay on the right track Tuesday and grab the advantage in the threegame series with a 9-0 victory.

The Indians (10-11, 6-4) put together a six-run, six-hit second inning to go ahead, 7-0, and chase South ace Shane Ritter after 12⁄3 innings.

“He obviously didn’t have his best stuff. We caught him on an off day,” Minooka coach Jeff Petrovic said of the Iowa-bound Ritter.

It appeared Minooka starter Miguel Ruiz would be in trouble when three of South’s first four batters reached in the bottom of the first, but he recovered to get a short flyout to center fielder Cristian Sanchez and a strikeout to end the inning.

“I just focused on throwing strikes,” Ruiz said of getting out of the jam. “I know I wasn’t throwing my best stuff today. I just had to reach back and try to give my best.”

“He really battled,” Petrovic said. “I thought it was a huge play for Cristian to come in and catch that fly ball. His hustle to come in and make that play saved a run there. That was huge because we get the momentum in what you expect to be, with Ritter throwing, a really low-scoring game.”

Ruiz retired 13 hitters in a row starting with the last two outs in the first inning. Jon Allison ended the drought for South (11-7, 4-6) with a two-out double in the fifth.

“We haven’t been getting big hits all year really,” South coach Phil Bodine said.

Minooka’s big inning began when Jon Vesper reached on an infield error and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cole Thompson.

ROMEOVILLE – To beat Lindenwood, Lewis University’s top-ranked men’s volleyball team had to play its game. And the Flyers did Tuesday, taking their Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association semifinal, 25-22, 2514, 25-18 at Neil Carey Arena.

Lewis will host the winner of Wednesday’s Ohio State at Loyola semifinal in the MIVA championship match at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Flyers dominated at the net, offensively and defensively, as expected.

Lewis outblocked Lindenwood, 11.5-4.5, and the senior outside hitters outhit the Lions, 35 to 16.

In the back row, Lewis didn’t struggle, either. Senior libero Lucas Yanez matched a season-high 12 digs, while junior setter Scott Fifer and outside hitter Geoff Powell had five digs apiece.

“It’s exciting that teams are respecting our block,” Yanez said, “and now they see that we have a defense behind that block. A lot of people thought that we just blocked a lot of balls and didn’t play really good defense around it, but now teams are seeing that we can play defense around it, and they’re respecting the guys at the net who are doing a good job, and avoiding them forces us to make plays. We’re all able to be successful at the same time.”

Lindenwood avoided the strong Flyers’ block – which leads the nation – and came close to picking up a win in the first game. Lewis led, 7-3, to start the match but had unforced errors that gave the Lions the lead.

“The first game, they came out and played tough,” senior Eric Fitterer said.

“They were playing a little better than we were. We made a few unforced errors, and they capitalized on them. We dug ourselves in a hole, but we dug out one point at a time.”

The Flyers (26-2) were able to dig out of the hole by strong hitting from the pins.

Right side Fitterer (11 kills) led Lewis with six kills, the same number of kills as the three Lindenwood pin hitters combined in the first game. He got help because his outsides also were putting up impressive numbers.

“When everyone is hitting a good percentage and getting their kills, it spreads out their block and makes it easier on our attackers,” Fitterer said.

Since all outside hitters were on a roll, Fifer (40 assists) evenly distributed among them.

Greg Petty put down five of his teamhigh 13 kills in the first game. Petty also hit a dominating .455 hitting percentage, rarely heard of from an outside attacker.

The other outside, Powell, had two hits for the night and hit an even more impressive .588 hitting percentage.

Powell pretty much flawless volleyball offensively.

In the first, Powell slammed the ball near the 10-foot line. In the third, Powell soared from the back row to hit a strong “bick ball” (a low, back-row set aimed at the middle of the court). Throughout the night, Powell was hitting over the block, and in the first game, he had an .800 hitting percentage.

“Earlier before the game, Scotty told me that he was going to run a little bit more bick stuff,” Powell said. “I was ready for it. He set it, and I put it down.”

Running a successful bick with Powell and Petty will come in handy when they play Loyola or Ohio State. Blocking also will come in handy against the

hard-hitting teams.

Playing Lindenwood was pretty frustrating for the dominant middles, junior Bobby Walsh and sophomore Jacob Schmiegelt.

In the longest rally of the night, Walsh blocked two balls, but Lindenwood kept the ball alive. Frustrated, Walsh showed he not only can block, he also can hit.

“I was happy that Scott gave me the ball,” Walsh said. “I was getting very frustrated and tired of moving with transition and blocking side to side.

Either way, I wanted the ball. Kill or error. I wanted the play over with, but I was happy that it was a kill.”

Walsh ended the night with five kills (.500) and three solo and three block assists. Schmiegelt also had a strong night with three kills and five block assists.

In the matchup of the middles Tuesday, however, Walsh would like to remind his competition that he did a little better.

“I got Jacob again,” Walsh said.

“I’m leading in our little rivalry, but he played really well. If he didn’t make some of those huge blocks that were momentum changers, we definitely would have lost the first set, and the second two would have been a lot closer.”

While the two middles continue to battle it out, Lewis will face one of their two biggest competitors of the year to battle Friday. Ohio State gave Lewis one of its only losses of the season, while Loyola is still considered one of the top men’s teams in the nation.

“We’re ready for Loyola or Ohio State,” Powell said. “Whoever it is, we’re ready.”

more than Amari Cooper, and I suspect they’ll both be available when that team picks, I’m not going to match White with them because I promised I wouldn’t, but I’m also not going to match him with the next couple teams after them even if they need a wideout because I know he probably already went to the team before them, even if I didn’t say so in my mock.

So here’s some stuff I’m pretty sure is true, even if it doesn’t help my mock drafting.

One team’s general manager told me Monday morning he’s sure it’s no better than 50-50 right now the Bucs are taking Jameis Winston. They might, but don’t bet the farm on it.

Another individual who will be picking for his team told me cornerback Kevin Johnson of Wake Forest is one of the fastest risers on a number of draft boards right now as we count down to draft day.

And one highly respected offensive coach told me, “Todd Gurley will be

the best offensive player in this draft.”

That said, and knowing all that you’ve heard, how do you not mock Winston first or put Johnson or Gurley in the top 20?

I’ve been dying to get this off my chest for the last month or two. I hate mock drafts.

What endeavor is there in any industry where a guy is more guaranteed to fail than we are every time we try to match 32 college kids with $32 billion businesses?

I know it’s fun to try to guess, and fans love hearing what they hope to hear and even might love it more when they get to laugh at you and call you names if you throw them a curve ball.

But is it really worth all the time, data, ink and trees we kill for it?

It’s not that I mind looking foolish – heck, I’ve perfected that over the years. But who wants to work this hard to end up looking so silly?

OK, I’m over it now, and I actually do feel much better. I’m probably even going to do it one more time Wednesday – my Mock Draft 4.0 – after I pick up my $2 Lotto ticket. I won’t win that, either.

This is my 39th year on the NFL beat, and I consider myself a pretty well-connected guy. My Rolodex includes a good number of NFL owners, general managers, coaches and players – active and retired – and more than a couple even are on speed dial.

We talk almost year round about the state of the game and the league, their teams, other teams, hot gossip, and for the most part they’re all completely honest with me about nine or 10 months out of the year.

But mid-February through early May is the black hole, and most of our conversations end with us laughing and me saying, “You just lied to me, didn’t you?” and the guy on the other end saying, “Probably.”

It’s not that my friends with the Bears, Patriots, 49ers, Packers or any other team in the league want to make me look bad. They just know that my job is to share what they give me with other friends around the league to try to gather more information. And the more disinformation they can spread about what they’re really thinking, the better the chance they can get teams in front of them to take players they don’t want and leave the plums they really covet.

The only information I get that actually has value is what I get off the record, and if I get it off the record, I can’t use it in a mock draft or anywhere else.

It does help in one way. If I know – off the record – a certain team for whatever reason likes Kevin White

By DAVID GINSBURG The Associated Press BALTIMORE – After a pair of postponements caused by rioting in Baltimore, the Orioles and Chicago White Sox will play Wednesday at Camden Yards in what is believed to be the first game without fans in major league baseball’s 145-season history.

Because of the unsettled environment in Baltimore, where rioters burned a drug store and set police cars ablaze on Monday night, officials moved the game up five hours from its original 6:05 p.m. starting time and closed it to the public.

In addition, Baltimore’s Friday-to-Sunday series against Tampa Bay was shifted from Camden Yards to Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, with the Orioles remaining the home team and batting last.

“All of the decisions in Baltimore were driven first by the desire to insure the safety of fans, players, umpires and sta-

dium workers,” Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said in an email to The Associated Press.

Although the Orioles won’t be performing in front of their fans Wednesday and will lose three home games, they understood the situation and had no complaints.

“It’s all about what’s best for the city and the safety of our people,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said in a telephone interview with the AP. “The last thing you want to do is put the fans in harm’s way.

You have to err on the side of safety.”

Schools were closed Tuesday and the mayor imposed a 10 p.m.-to-5 a.m. curfew. The announcement of the unique closed-doors game came late Tuesday afternoon, after the Orioles postponed games against the Sox on Monday and Tuesday.

This was the Sox’s only scheduled visit to Camden Yards. The first two games will be made up as part of a double-

header on May 28.

The Baseball Hall of Fame and John Thorn, Major League Baseball’s official historian, said they did not think there ever had been a closed-doors big league game.

However, there have been instances in the minor leagues.

“It’s definitely going to be uncharted territory,” Showalter said.

Said Duquette: “It’s not ideal, but at least our fans will be able to follow the game on TV.” Since 1987, the lowest attendance has been 746 when the Sox hosted Toronto at Comiskey Park on April 9, 1997, according to STATS. The New York Yankees’ home game against the Sox on Sept. 22, 1966, listed attendance at 413.

And now, the Sox are on the verge of performing in front of no one.

Thorn said the lowest attendance for a major league game appears to be six when Worcester hosted Troy in a National League matchup on Sept. 28, 1882.

Basic basil pesto can be reworked to include dill or any favorite herb

By MELISSA D’ARABIAN The Associated Press Fresh herbs are one of nature’s best lowcal flavor sources. And as the weather warms up, we’ll transition from buying herbs in cute little clamshells costing a couple bucks each to scooping large bunches of soft-leaved herbs into our carts for pennies on the dollar. Or perhaps you have an herb garden, and you’ll find yourself inundated with a cilantro or parsley plant that takes over a small section of your backyard.

What to do with all these herbs? One ap-

proach to preserving herbs is to freeze them as cubes. To do this, you simply blend up clean, fresh herbs with just enough oil or water to make a thick paste.

You then fill ice cube trays (silicone muffin cups also work) about halfway with the herb paste and freeze. Once frozen, the herb cubes can be bagged and stored in the freezer until needed.

Note that water-based herb cubes freeze more firmly than oil-based, but herbs discolor more in water. Either way, these cubes are easily added to soups, stews, sautes and chili.

For the best effect, add them toward the end

of cooking so the fresh flavor of the preserved herbs really comes through.

Another favorite strategy is pesto, and it makes the most of just about any herbs, not just basil. It also freezes well as cubes.

Once you jump on the pesto ice cube train, you will be amazed at the many uses: Add to scrambled eggs; use as a sandwich spread; whisk with Dijon mustard, red wine vinegar and water to make vinaigrette; spoon over meat hot off the grill; toss with roasted veggies; mix with an equal amount of Dijon and spoon over chicken breasts before roasting; mix with Greek yogurt for veggie dip. You get the idea.

BASIC FORMULA: Don’t assume you’re limited to the classic basil version of pesto. You can use just about any herb or green (or combination) to make a tasty pesto perfect for pasta, seafood, dipping bread, spooning over a hot soup, or any other favorite way to use pesto. The formula is simple: 4 cups of fresh green herbs plus ¹⁄³ cup of nuts or seeds plus ½ cup olive oil or broth (or a combination) plus ¼ cup hard Italian cheese. Blend until chunky or creamy.

Fresh Dill Pesto

Start to finish: 10 minutes Servings: 8 2 cups fresh parsley leaves 2 cups fresh dill fronds ¹⁄³ cup almonds 1 large garlic clove, roughly chopped

¼ cup olive oil ½ cup low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth

¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese Hefty pinch of salt

In a blender or food processor, combine the parsley, dill, almonds and garlic.

Pulse until finely chopped. Add the oil, broth, Parmesan and salt, then blend to desired consistency. Use immediately, or transfer to a small bowl, cover tightly and chill.

Alternatively, spoon into ice cube trays (fill cubes only halfway) and freeze. Pop out frozen pesto cubes and keep in a zip-

close plastic bag in the freezer.

Nutrition information per serving: 110 calories; 90 calories from fat (82 percent of total calories); 11 g fat (1.5 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 0 mg cholesterol; 3 g carbohydrate; 1 g fiber; 0 g sugar; 3 g protein; 90 mg sodium.

Remember the advice of Andy Robson, an English expert. If a threelevel-or-higher pre-emptor leads a side suit, it is a singleton. If he leads his own suit, play him for a singleton in your trump suit.

stretching routine will pump more blood and oxygen to your muscles, loosening them and preparing them for more intense use. Use a hot shower or bath, a heated pool, or even warm compresses or a heating pad to warm stiff joints before you stretch.

• STRETCH DURING YOUR LEAST PAINFUL TIME OF DAY. Morning, when stiffness tends to peak, won’t work for some people.

Choosing a window of time after pain relievers take effect can help make stretching easier.

• ADAPT STRETCHES. You may need to modify your stretches. For example, it may be better for you to choose stretches you can do while seated, instead of standing.

• EXPECT SOME DISCOMFORT. I encourage everyone to stretch only to the point of mild tension, not pain. But some discomfort is to be expected with arthritis. Try the two-hour rule: If discomfort following stretches lasts longer than two hours, or is more severe than your usual pain, step down your routine.

Try doing fewer reps and holding stretches for less time. As stretching becomes easier, gradually step it up again.

As with all types of exercise, you need to engage in stretching regularly in order to reap lasting benefits. A daily regimen is best, but do stretch at least two or three times a week.

Dear Doctor K: Will stretching exercises help to relieve my arthritis pain?

Dear Reader: Yes, they will. That may seem strange. After all, arthritis affects the joints • the ends of two adjacent bones and the space between them. In contrast, stretching involves muscles. But the joints and the muscles around those joints are intimately connected.

A joint with arthritis hurts when it is asked to move. It is the muscles that move the bones that form a joint. When movement is painful, as it so often is for people with arthritis, it’s natural to limit movement. For example, if you straighten a leg, and feel pain owing to arthritis in a knee, you’ll tend to keep that knee bent.

Yet if you keep an arthritic joint bent, rather than moving it through its full range of motion, you allow muscles to stiffen in that position.

Over time, the muscles shorten, limiting range of motion and prompting other problems.

Stretching can help people with osteoarthritis nip this sort of cycle in the bud. Stretches can also help people with rheumatoid arthritis improve their range of motion in damaged joints.

Before you begin, ask your doctor about stretching exercises to ease stiffness. Your doctor will probably advise you to work with a physical therapist who can design an exercise program tailored to your specific needs and goals.

I also recommend that my arthritis patients do some resistance exercises to build or maintain strength in muscles that support key joints.
