By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Paying for a spot at Metra commuter parking lots with tokens in New Lenox has proven to be a suitable payment method for residents.

Between 15 to 20 percent of the people who use the commuter parking lot at the Route 30 and Cedar Station pay with tokens, village officials said.

The tokens are available at Village Hall, 7-Eleven at Route 30 and Cedar Roads and Jewel-Osco stores in the area.

Each token costs $1.25 and residents can buy them in sheets of 10.

“I definitely think there has been utilization of the tokens,” said Kim Auchstetter, the village’s financial director. “I think it’s a convenience factor. We had seen [use of the tokens] go up.”

Kim Auchstetter New Lenox inancial director said. Using the tokens gets rid of the need for commuters to dig around in their pockets for the right change needed for parking.

“Instead of them having to turn a dollar into quarters, they can take the token and put it in the slot,” he said.

One convenience for residents the village might want to pursue is making the tokens available at the Metra station itself, he said.

Auchstetter said on average the village takes in about $900 daily from the commuter parking lot from people paying cash – but it goes up to

$1,100 daily when cash and token use are combined. Carroll said the revenue the village draws from the lots would be the same, with or without the option to pay with tokens.

Other villages that use tokens for their commuter parking lots include Tinley Park, Midlothian and Mokena, Carroll said.

Mokena Village Administrator John Downs said the token program was implemented three years ago as another form of payment after prices for commuter parking increased. The price rose from $1 to $1.25, which is the cost of each token, he said.

The tokens are sold at the Mokena Police Department, Village Hall and State Bank of Illinois, according to Mokena village’s website. About 19 percent of Mokena’s commuters use tokens at several commuter parking lots, Downs said.

“It’s just a matter of convenience without having to mess with change,” he said. “Some people come in buying more sheets [of tokens].”

Corn farmers remain optimistic, but playing it safe this week

Manhattan farmer John Kiefner will have to find other ways to keep himself busy this week, with Mother Nature keeping him on the sideline – and off the fields.

Like other Midwest planters, the corn and soybean farmer’s efforts to get his corn crops into the ground this month have been thwarted by rain and overnight drops in temperatures. Fields have been too wet or too cold for seeds to germinate effectively and Kiefner, like other farmers, have been a little hesitant to take that risk.

Instead, he’s working on machinery or spraying portions of his fields with fertilizer, all the while keeping his eyes to the sky in hopes for even a brief stint of warmer, dryer days.

“I’ve basically been playing cat and mouse with the weather,” Kiefner said.

“Mother Nature has thrown such extremes in the last couple of years, I’m not sure what an average start time for us is anymore.”

It wasn’t until Saturday that Kiefner was able to get corn crops planted into a small portion of his 600-acre corn and soybean farm. But

by Monday, he was back on the sideline with more rain and chilly weather in the forecast.

For weeks, Kiefner and most other Will County farmers have resisted the urge to put their crops in the ground with the soil only borderline ready. Kiefner pointed out how costly the worst-case scenario can be if farmers were hit with a prolonged cold spell. For the corn seeds alone, it costs farmers $120 per acre, he said.

“If a farmer planted 100 acres and had to come back, that would really not be favorable. It’s rare, but when it happens, it hurts,” he said.

“So I play on the conservative side. If we could tailor-make our weather, we would all plant during the last week of

Will County Farm Bureau Manager Mark Schneidewind said this week’s forecast – filled with cooler temperatures and chances of heavy rain – leaves farmers with unsure footing on the fields, he said.

“We’re really not seeing the temperatures warm up,” Schneidewind said, noting temperatures are not expected to get above 70 all week.

As of Sunday, 19 percent of the nation’s corn crop is in the ground, just behind the five-year average of 28 percent, but better than last year’s average of 5 percent, according to the latest figures from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

With the progress made, Kiefner and fellow Manhattan farmer Jim Robbins aren’t worried just yet. Robbins said it doesn’t take as long to plant as it used to with today’s bigger, more efficient machines.

“We can always make up for lost time,” Robbins said, who got about 25 percent of his corn crops into the ground over the weekend before the area was hit Sunday evening with another round of rain.

Even last year was a slow start to planting, Robbins said, with most farmers not

getting anything into the ground before Thursday. Yet, U.S. farmers that year had a record 13.9 billion bushels of corn.

“We’ve got time. You know, people planted corn until June last year and it turned out fine,” he said.

“The critical thing is how the weather turns out this summer. Spring weather is important, but it’s what we get during the summer that’s even more important.”

Ribbon-cutting set for medical clinic

Little League honors coach

By JEAN TYRELL Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Families with children in their baseball uniforms came to opening day Sunday at Belmont Little League. The boys and girls, with hats perched on their heads, stood on the baselines in their color-coordinated team shirts.

But the anticipation Jesse of the Little League Sea- Broadway Jr. son was halted for a moment of silence to remember a special coach.

Jesse Broadway Jr., 54, died in January. The Belmont Little League crowd honored the 20-year coach with kind words, a balloon release and the acceptance

of a donation that will help keep his legacy alive at the east side baseball field.

In a short ceremony to open the baseball season, Jesse Broadway’s daughter, Jessica Broadway, presented the league with a check for $525. The money will be used for a cause close to Jesse’s heart – helping a Belmont family with registration and equipment fees.

The money was contributed by the Chicago Center Air Traffic Controllers Association, Word of Life and Mount Olivet Churches and Jesse’s family and friends.

“He was more of a mentor, a father figure for kids that didn’t have a father,” Jessica Broadway said of her father. “He gave rides; he gave equipment. Dad would pay registration for those children who couldn’t afford it.

“He gave his very last to see that the kids could participate.”

Even during his battle with cancer, Jesse Broadway coached through last summer when he was able to coach two of his grandchildren, Jada and Darius. In his 20 years as a coach, Jesse coached his own sons, Jefferi and Jordan, now adults.

He coached high school level baseball and football, and mentored many, including current Belmont League President Matt Munoz.

When Munoz, started coaching at Belmont, Jesse approached him.

“He’d congratulate me on stepping up [to take the position as a coach],” Munoz said. “He was actually my wrestling coach at the Boys’ Club in the ’90s.”

Broadway was one of the coaches you could rely

on, Munoz said. Even being as ill as he was last year, Broadway would take part in cleanup days. He would bring some friends along.

“Sometimes we would try to send him home, but he wouldn’t take ‘No’ for an answer,” Munoz said.

“He would be the example that we would tell the other coaches about.”

As the wind snapped the American flag outside the fence Sunday, Jesse’s team, the Wolfies (Wolf’s Sealcoating) lined the third baseline in their gold jerseys. Each player got a gold or back balloon, and on signal the balloons were released. Jesse’s family let go of a large cluster of balloons, too.

Munoz commented that the balloons would reach Jesse, who is now looking down on Belmont from heaven.

JOLIET – The new St. Joseph Family Medical Clinic at Catholic Charities Daybreak Center has scheduled a ribbon-cutting ceremony and tour on Monday.

The clinic serves clients staying at the shelter who have medical concerns, Kathleen Langdon, director of development and communications for Catholic Charities Diocese of Joliet, said.

“This is a great opportunity for our uninsured clients to receive high-quality medical care,” Langdon said. “They are treated for anything from the common cold and flu to being diagnosed for signs of stroke and heart conditions.”

The clinic was created through the efforts of Dr. Omar Garcia, a Kankakee physician who initially planned to volunteer at the center one day a month, Langdon said.

But that commitment quickly changed to one day every week.

Nurse Cathy Langenderfer accompanies Garcia on his weekly visits, and also provides blood draws one day each week, as well.

Services such as the blooddraws and EKGs aid in the identification and monitoring of such conditions as hypertension, high cholesterol and diabetes, Langdon said.

Typical clients are men and women with no insurance who haven’t had medical care for years, Langdon said. Some are homeless, she said.

The clinic has been in operation for about two months, Langdon said, with Garcia donating everything needed to outfit it. Seven clients are treated during each visit.

’70s hockey teams reunite to raise money

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Lockport West High School hockey was dominant during the early 1970s.

“The score would be something like 11-0 after the first period so the other team would literally just give up,” alumnus Tom Giganti said.

Players from those Lockport West teams laced up their skates one more time Saturday at Rocket Ice Arena to help raise almost $1,000 for the scholarship fund of the Lockport West/Romeoville High School Alumni Association.

“Every time we get together it’s nothing but fun for a good cause,” Vela said, adding that the four-year-old organization has given one scholarship to a high school student and is raising funds for a second one.

Lockport West transferred

into the Valley View school district in 1971 and was renamed Romeoville High School, leading to a joint celebration of both eras.

“It was huge,” Giganti said.

“Two guys who were pretty good on my team didn’t come, so it was no use keeping score because it was a slaughter. But it was more about having fun.”

Many players of the old teams stopped skating but came anyway, honoring the championship teams and remembering those players who died within the past 40 years.

The hockey game was sponsored with donations and support by At’s A Nice Pizza, Woodie’s Logistics Ltd., Don Ellis from American Family Insurance, alumnus Gary Koss, Locker Room of Bolingbrook and Mongo McMichaels. Several individuals and alumni also donated.

Will County Forest Preserve building damaged in fire

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – A building owned by the Will County Forest Preserve District was damaged by an early morning fire Monday.

Fire crews were called just before 1 a.m. Monday for a chimney fire at 25055 Walnut Lane. The building is used to house interns who work for the Will County Forest Preserve District, Channahon Fire Chief John Petrakis said.

One intern was present at the time of the fire, but was not injured. Cindy Cain, spokeswoman for the Will County Forest Preserve, said the intern will have to move out slightly early as the internship was set to expire Wednesday.

Cain said the district hopes to have the building repaired

by August when next year’s fellowship begins.

Several fire crews were on the scene until 4 a.m. and managed to contain the flames to a small area near the chimney, Petrakis said.

“This one was kind of a challenge because the access from Walnut Lane, which actually leads into the preserve’s house, begins with an access path,” Petrakis said.

“That’s about an 800- to 900-foot jaunt. We had to direct one of our engines to back down that path.”

That fire was one of three that kept the Channahon Fire Protection District busy this weekend.

The first call came in at

about 1:30 p.m. Sunday for a residential fire at 25702 Woodrush Way. The home was occupied by two people who were unaware of the fire, which was visible on the exterior of the home, Petrakis said. The residents were evacuated and sustained no injuries.

Crews remained on the scene for about three hours.

The attic, family room and master bedroom all sustained damage, but the monetary amount of damages and cause are unknown at this time, Petrakis said.

At 6 a.m. Monday, crews responded to a third fire caused by a grill at 25062 Pawnee Lane. Petrakis said the fire was extinguished within one hour and no one was injured.

The skaters, many of them still deking, spinning and shooting at age 50, were playing with sons, friends and others that wanted to help fill out the teams.

“I decided to join to be a part of this,” alumnus Steve Silva said. “With everybody coming out and meeting old friends, this is just great.”

Silva was one of the stars of the championship teams and still skates. But this time he was on the same team as his three sons, who previously played hockey at Plainfield South and Plainfield Central high schools.

After the game, the players took off their pads and skated with family. Many then went to Mongo McMichaels restaurant for buffalo wings and pizza while looking at old yearbooks, photos and news clippings of their high school days.

“All of us that played together got to talk and meet up after a long time,” Silva said. “It was a very nice reunion.”

Men rescued after canoe capsizes on Whalon Lake

BY SHAW MEDIA BOLINGBROOK – Two 20-year-old men – one from Downers Grove and the other from Lisle – had to be rescued from Whalon Lake Saturday evening after their canoe capsized in choppy water.

The incident unfolded about 6:50 p.m. at the Bolingbrook lake, when the men went into the water about 50 feet from the shore, according to the Forest Preserve District of Will County Police.

After the canoe capsized, the Lisle man swam to shore.

The Downers Grove man grabbed a nearby tree about 20 feet from shore and was rescued by Bolingbrook Fire

Department personnel, police said.

Both men were wearing life jackets. The men told police at the scene that they didn’t think the water was that rough when they began canoeing.

Both subjects had no medical complaints, and they both refused treatment. No citations were issued, and the canoe was retrieved and back on shore after the incident.

The 249-acre Whalon Lake preserve is owned by the Forest Preserve District of Will County.

The dog park portion is in Naperville; the 80-acre lake is in Bolingbrook. The preserve entrance is off of Royce Road, west of Route 53.

“The dispatchers had stayed on the phone with him the entire time. The man couldn’t provide his exact location so it was the dispatcher team that had to work with first responders to locate this man,” said Steve Figved, chief administrator for the Will County 9-1-1 Emergency Telephone System.

“He had been hiking since nine that morning and became disoriented and lost. It was 20 degrees outside and dropping and there was just two hours of daylight left.”

Instances like that one is just one example of how 9-1-1 dispatchers oftentimes are the “quiet voices working behind the scenes,” Figved said.

Slucki, Wilson and Horath – three dispatchers from the Will County Sheriff’s Office who answered the man’s 9-1-1 call back in February – were among the 60 honored last week by the Will County 9-1-1 Emergency Telephone System Board.

The awards were given in conjunction with National Telecommunicators Week. Dispatchers often deal with life-

or-death situations but aren’t as readily recognized, making them unsung heroes in the community, Figved said.

“Dispatchers are the first first-responders in the county,” Figved said. “There’s a lot of responsibility. They have to remain calm, clear and direct and they never know what the next call is going to be.”

Seven individuals were honored with milestone awards for 20 or more years of service, Figved said. Two call center teams from the Romeoville area also were recognized for their work.

Others were recognized for their time as telecommunicators with the Will County 9-1-1 ETSB. Jacob Gloodt, a part-time dispatcher with Western Will County Communications and full-time firefighter with the Oak Park Fire Department, was named Telecommunicator of the Year at the ceremony.

“I do have a different perspective from my experience as a firefighter,” Gloodt said in a news release regarding the awards. “I have used my background to develop training programs for the telecommunicators so they can learn to anticipate the information the emergency personnel will need. I am honored to be chosen for this award. I think this reflects highly on the huge support I receive from my co-workers and supervisor.”

Local stores taking part in Free Comic Book Day Saturday

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com Kids, teens and anyone interested in comic books can have a dose – for free – of Batman, Spider-Man and several other superheroes Saturday.

May 3 is national Free Comic Book Day, where participating comic book stores will give away at least one comic book per person off a list of comics that includes “Archie Digest,” DC Entertainment’s “The New 52: Futures End” and Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

Several other nostalgic comics are available including Transformers, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, SpongeBob and the Smurfs.

Some stores also will host comic-themed events.

“This is one of our biggest sales days of the year,” said Joshua Kelly, manager of Graham Crackers Comics of Plainfield, which has participated in the annual event for at least 10 years. “When people come in for their free comics, they find something that’s interesting and say, ‘Hey I want to get that.’ ” Free Comic Book Day is a national collaborative effort of retailers, publishers, suppliers

and Diamond Comic Distributors, according to the website for the event. It started in 2002 and has grown to include thousands of independent comic book specialty stores.

Sponsors include several of the biggest comic companies like Marvel and DC Entertainment, as well as Comic-Con groups.

Amazing Fantasy comic book stores on 1128 S. State St. in Lockport, 20523 S. La Grange Road in Frankfort and 15948 S. Harlem Ave., are officially joining Graham Crackers Comics on 16030 S. Lincoln Highway in Plainfield in giving away free comics Saturday.

Stores generally pay for the free comics, Kelly said, but the enthusiasm of building new comic book fans and reinvigorating old ones is worth it.

“It’s to encourage comics and reading for all ages,” Kelly said, adding that each company sends out specific comic books for the day, which often include precursors to storylines or fillers.

The event’s website www. freecomicbookday.com has a list of available comic books available at participating stores.

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Daria Lynes has been a City of Morris employee for nearly 43 years, currently serving as the deputy treasurer. But this year, Lynes will take on new responsibility as the city’s first human resource administrator.

During the most recent city council meeting, the council discussed creating the HR position, with an annual compensation of a $6,000 stipend.

For several years, Lynes

wage schedule for all city employees.

When compiling this fiscal year’s wage schedule, budget officers John Enger and Carol Adair recommended Lynes and three other city employees receive larger raises than usual, which was approved by council.

Lynes specifically was recommended because of the added HR duties she has performed on top of her regular duties as deputy treasurer.

“With wage schedules, there were four personnel that [Enger and Adair] looked

at increasing because of their workloads, one of which was Daria,” Kopczick said Monday during a finance committee meeting. “[Daria] has always been here well beyond her 4:30 p.m. close and has had a tremendous amount of responsibility.”

As the human resources administrator, Lynes will be given recommending power but will not be responsible for hiring and firing, Kopczick said. That power will remain with the finance committee and city council.

“Daria takes care of all of

the paperwork that has to be filed when starting or leaving a job and all of the personal records for employees,” Kopczick said.

The city’s finance committee approved the official ordinance creating the position and providing a job description. The ordinance is set to go before the council Thursday.

“The position was included in this year’s budget, but it was never officially created

by City Council,” Kopczick said. “This ordinance will officially create that position.”

Garage fire causes $50,000 in damage to Joliet home THE HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – A fire broke out in the garage of a Joliet home Monday morning, causing an estimated $50,000 in damage, according to fire officials.

The Troy Fire Protection District responded to a call at 8:24 a.m. about a fire at a house on the 1500 block of Timber-

line Drive, Deputy Chief Andy Doyle said.

People were in the residence at the time the fire broke out but they got out, and no one was injured, Doyle said.

The fire broke out in the garage next to a car, eventually damaging the vehicle and the garage. Fire and smoke damage extended to the attic above

the garage.

“There was smoke damage into the attic and inside the house a little bit,” Doyle said, adding that smoke and water damage will require the residents to replace much of the drywall.

Fire officials still were investigating the fire as of 10 a.m.

State colleges left with veterans program costs The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHAMPAIGN – A state program that guarantees college tuition for Illinois veterans has provided less and less money in recent years, which leaves public universities and community colleges to pick up the tab. The bill is expected to top $32 million this year.

The Illinois Veteran Grant started in 1967. It’s considered an entitlement, a status that means that if the General Assembly doesn’t appropriate money for it, the schools have to cover the cost.

According to The News-Gazette, the legislature in 2013 and 2014 provided no money. The state has wrestled with budget deficits the past few years.

Major universities bare much of the burden. The University of Illinois, for instance, last year had a $3.1 million bill to cover its Veter-

“Schools want to serve the vets. We’re glad the program is there and we’re glad they choose to come to our school,” said Janet Ingargiola, director of financial aid with Danville Area Community College. But “it’s a squeeze for community colleges who are already tight on money.”

The school awarded $91,034

under the Veteran Grant program in 2011-2012, $94,100 in 2012-2013, and $128,000 for the current school year, Ingargiola said.

Parkland College in Champaign has about 350 veterans who are students, and many use the Veteran Grant, said Tim Wendt, director of financial aid and veterans services. He says the school will spend $600,000 this year on Veteran Grant funding.

“We could do so much more if we were getting the [state appropriation]. Half a million dollars is huge for us,” Wendt said.

At the University of Illinois, there’s no expectation that the state will be able to help cover the costs any time soon, said Dan Mann, director of financial aid.

“I do not foresee us getting paid in the upcoming future unless something changes with the budget situation,” he said.

Advocates warn of transportation funding drop-off

SPRINGFIELD – An influential group of Illinois transportation advocates is warning lawmakers of a drop-off in spending on roads and bridges and pointing out a murky federal funding picture as it tries to bolster its case for an aggressive tax plan it says would provide sound financing.

The Transportation for Illinois Coalition plans to deliver a letter to state lawmakers Tuesday warning them of looming bankruptcy in the federal en-

dowment for road building and the expiration this year of Gov. Pat Quinn’s $31 billion statewide construction program called Illinois Jobs Now. “State funding for transportation was inadequate for too long before Illinois Jobs Now and the dramatic decline now that the program is expiring will lead to backsliding in the condition of our roads and bridges,” reads the letter, obtained in advance by The Associated Press.

But just as Congress struggles with how to shore up the Highway Trust Fund, sched-

uled to run out of money this summer, the state Legislature faces the unpleasant task of finding new revenue for its portion of infrastructure building and maintenance.

The transportation coalition has proposed creating a state fund of $1.8 billion annually to provide steady spending for roads, bridges and more.

But it would mean a 4 cents-agallon increase on gasoline and a 7-cent hike on diesel – taxes that haven’t increased for road purposes since 1990.

By SOPHIA TAREEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Gov. Pat Quinn will consider giving Illinois communities a larger share of state income tax revenues as a way to help solve the municipal pension crisis, an idea he previewed Monday as part of his pitch to extend the temporary income tax increase.

The Chicago Democrat didn’t give specifics, but said he doesn’t want cities to rely on increasing property taxes.

His comments before the City Club of Chicago offered the possibility of an alternative funding source to raising property taxes in order to help pay for an overhaul of two Chicago pension systems.

“If we have more revenue sharing from the income tax, and I’m definitely willing to engage in that discussion,” Quinn told the crowd of business executives and public officials, “don’t you think that is a better way to go than to say to local units of government, ‘The only alternative you have, your only resort, is to raise property taxes ...?’ ” Quinn floated the idea as mayors statewide are pushing for legislative help to overhaul

local pension systems for police and firefighters, hoping to build on momentum from the state’s new law reforming state pension systems. The mayors say risings costs are squeezing out spending for essential services and raising property taxes may be a way out. Since programs are created by state law, only state legislators can make changes.

Earlier this month, lawmakers approved plans for Chicago’s municipal employee and laborer pension systems. The proposal would eliminate the $9.4 billion shortfall in those funds by cutting benefits and increasing contributions for both the city and employees.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants the city’s additional contributions to come from a property tax increase, though the proposal no longer calls explicitly for a property tax hike.

Quinn said he’s still reviewing the legislation, but reiterated his stance against raising property taxes.

Instead, he wants to extend the temporary income tax hike, which rolls back in January and is forecast to leave a roughly $1.6 billion revenue shortfall.

It will be a tough sell, particularly in an election year. Quinn

wants to keep current income tax rates to prevent budget cuts and said Monday that raising communities’ share of income tax revenues should be part of that discussion.

Municipalities receive roughly 6 percent of state income tax revenues from individuals and corporations, after money has been set aside for refunds, according to Illinois Department of Revenue spokeswoman Sue Hofer. The money is distributed based on population.

The share municipalities receive was decreased from 10 percent to 6 percent when the income tax was increased in 2011. State officials have said the actual amount municipalities received was approximately the same since overall revenue went up, but city officials say they received less during the tough economic times.

Chicago officials were receptive Monday to the idea of a revenue bump, but called on Quinn to sign the legislation.

“Mayor Emanuel would welcome this reversal in policy to restore full funding of the income tax to local governments,” Emanuel spokeswoman Kelley Quinn said in a statement.

“Either they’re going to have to address the shortfall or they’re just going to tell the states, ‘It’s time for you to start picking up more of the load for yourself,’” said John Lowder, a lobbyist and coalition member. “... We would be in no position to deal with that.”

STATE BRIEFS 9 mumps cases diagnosed at U of I CHAMPAIGN – University of Illinois officials say nine students on the Urbana-Champaign campus have been diagnosed with mumps. The cases are part of an outbreak that has already produced more cases this year than the state saw in all of 2013.

Dr. Robert Palinkas is director of the campus McKinley Health Center. He tells The News-Gazette the nine cases have all been diagnosed since spring break. A faculty member has what may be a 10th case.

Palinkas said the students were all vaccinated. But he said the vaccine is only 80 to 85 percent effective.

Proposed Illinois tax on soft drinks may fizzle SPRINGFIELD – A legislative effort to tax soft drinks in order to promote healthy living may be falling flat in Springfield.

The (Belleville) News-Democrat reports the effort introduced by two Chicago area lawmakers remains in committee.

But they haven’t been called for any hearings.

Timothy Bramlet is executive director of the Illinois Beverage Association. He said he believes means the measures are “effec-

tively dead.”

The legislation adds a penny-per-ounce surcharge on sugary drinks that are sold in sealed containers. That means a 12-ounce can of soda would cost another 12 more cents while a 12-pack would increase by $1.44.

Money generated from the levy – as much as $600 million by some estimates – would be used to pay for Medicaid programs and a variety of health services and educational efforts.

Proposal gives fire unions say in staffing SPRINGFIELD – Municipal leaders said a proposal quietly moving through the Illinois Legislature would give unions a say in how many firefighters are on a city’s force – inevitably leading to higher property taxes or cuts to services.

The measure, which House lawmakers approved April 3, ensures firefighter staffing levels are part of contract negotiations between fire unions and city officials.

Mayors and fire chiefs said the measure tips leverage in favor of unions and takes hiring and layoff decisions away from local officials.

MANILA, Philippines – President Barack Obama vigorously defended his foreign policy record Monday, arguing that his cautious approach to global problems has avoided the type of missteps that contributed to a “disastrous” decade of war for the United States.

Obama’s expansive comments came at the end of a weeklong Asia trip that exposed growing White House frustration with critics who cast the president as weak and ineffectual on the world stage.

Arkansans rush for cover against twister; 15 dead

By ANDREW DeMILLO and JIM SALTER The Associated Press VILONIA, Ark. – The sky turned black as the funnel cloud closed in, and Maggie Caro rushed with her husband and two children to a community shelter at a Vilonia school, where they were among the last to get inside the fortified gym before the doors were shut.

The half-mile-wide tornado carved an 80-mile path of destruction through the Little Rock suburbs Sunday evening, killing at least 15 people, flattening rows of homes, shredding cars along a highway and demolishing a brand-new school before it even had a chance to open.

Officials said the death toll could have been worse if residents hadn’t piled into underground storm shelters and fortified safe rooms after listening to forecasts on TV and radio, getting cellphone alerts or calls or texts from loved ones, and hearing sirens blare through their

neighborhoods.

It was among a rash of twisters and violent storms across the Midwest and South that killed 17 people in all Sunday.

With forecasters warning of more of the same Monday across the South, a large tornado damaged homes and downed trees and power lines around Tupelo, Miss. There were no immediate reports of any injuries.

Most of the dead in Arkansas were killed in their homes in and around Vilonia, population 3,800. Firefighters on Monday searched for anyone trapped amid the piles of splintered wood and belongings strewn across yards.

Hospitals took in more than 100 patients.

U.S., E.U. hit Russia with new sanctions over Ukraine The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – The United States and its European allies hit more than two dozen Russian government officials, executives and companies with sanctions Monday as punishment for their country’s actions in Ukraine, yet the penalties stopped short of targeting Russia’s economy more broadly. In Moscow, there was relief that the sanctions were not as far-ranging as feared.

The measures, including asset freezes and visa bans, affect people close to the Kremlin and are designed to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to de-escalate the Ukraine crisis. Making strong communities GUEST VIEW Michael Trench Growing up in a family of six, there are very few evenings that I can remember where we did not all eat the evening meal together around the kitchen table. There was never an agenda, but it did (1) strengthen our relationship; and (2) keep us informed with what was going on in everyone else’s life.

Community works like a big family and is at the base of most everyone’s lives – whether it’s the town you live in, a gym you regularly visit, your place of worship or a club you belong to. These communities bind members to a common place, a shared desire to strive for success and most importantly, a shared investment in making the whole community greater than the sum of its parts.

With such shared invested interest in communities throughout Will County, the negativity and all too often stories around violence, corruption and all things wrong with the places we live is bewildering. Isn’t it time that we pulled together around the kitchen table and dedicated some time to discussing the future of our communities and how we can ensure a positive, strong future for the places we live?

The Community Foundation of Will County is supporting a region-wide endeavor by our parent organization, The Chicago Community Trust, called “On the Table” to do just that.

On May 12, thousands of residents across the northeastern region of Illinois will sit down for intimate mealtime discussions – in backyards, kitchens, community centers and churches with colleagues, neighbors, friends and strangers – to discuss ways in which we can take back our communities and create and sustain strong, safe and dynamic communities.

Fund Barack Obama’s library privately Like many museums across the U.S., presidential libraries are excellent ways to preserve history. They are culturally significant facilities, and we support their creation in principle.

Regardless of one’s political view of a particular presidential administration, our presidents are a significant part of U.S. history. Their contributions and historical documents related to their administrations have tremendous value.

Like other presidents before him, President Barack Obama will one day have such a facility built in his honor. We hope that library is built in Chicago honoring the president’s long ties to the city and to Illinois. Such a

facility to showcase the nation’s first black president would add to an already culturally rich city.

That said, we’re outraged at a state legislative committee’s recommendation to spend $100 million in taxpayer votes toward this effort, which is entirely unnecessary.

Libraries built for former Presidents Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush all were financed through private donations.

Illinois still has a pension system – the most underfunded in the nation – with a $100 billion deficit. It also has unpaid bills in excess of $6 billion.

The state’s most powerful Democrats, House Speaker Mike

Madigan and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel, are trying to force the $100 million expenditure for an Obama library anyway, fearing competition from New York, where he went to college, and Hawaii, the state of his birth.

A total of $7 billion was spent on the 2012 presidential campaign.

If that kind of money is available in a presidential election, we see no reason why the president’s supporters wouldn’t pay for a library to honor his legacy.

We urge legislators on both sides of the aisle to do the responsible thing and kill this proposal.

Fiore was pleased with the blocking efforts of Van Dellen and Vorderer, as well as with Aaron Redweik’s first-set blocking and Mike Rossetto’s five kills off the bench.

The Tigers (13-7, 1-3), who have finished second in all three of their tournaments and scored a big conference victory over Lincoln-Way Central a week ago, were looking forward to seeing where they match up against one of the

state’s finest squads.

But although West coach Jason Herrmann liked much of what he saw during his squad’s first set, he was disappointed with the way that they ended the match.

“That was not indicative of how we’ve played all year,” Herrmann said. “It was a good match in Game 1 and if we had eliminated some errors, we could have been right in it. But we got done real fast in Game 2 and we stopped doing the things that we know. That was a little concerning to me

since we haven’t seen that all season.

“When we came out and played a good Game 1, I thought that we’d have a little more firepower in Game 2.

It was Lincoln-Way East, but we’ve beaten Lincoln-Way Central and Hinsdale Central and played Waubonsie Valley and Lincoln-Way Central. I don’t care who’s on the other side of the court, that shouldn’t play into it.”

Brian Lyman did his best to keep the Tigers in it, recording eight kills. But the fact

that Noah Slowik was credited with only 14 assists reflected troubles for West.

That wasn’t apparent in the opener, however, when the Tigers hung close throughout but had a hard time slowing down East’s varied attack.

The hosts picked up their blocking and defense in the finale and limited West to just a handful of kills. In addition, East used a 6-0 service run from Van Dellen to open the set, and the Tigers couldn’t get closer than five points back after that.

FRANKFORT – It’s safe to say that Kris Fiore has a situation on his hands that almost any coach in the state gladly would accept.

Beside having four threeyear varsity performers who plan to play in college, the Lincoln-Way East boys volleyball coach has plenty of depth on this year’s squad.

That was evident again Monday when the Griffins got kills from 11 players in their 25-19, 25-13 SouthWest Suburban Conference home win over Joliet West.

As a result, East improved to 21-1 overall and 4-0 in the SWSC and is ranked along with rival Lincoln-Way North as the state’s top two teams.

A year ago, North ended East’s 35-4 season in a sectional final before placing second at state. This season the squads have split in invite finals with the Griffins winning at Marist and the Phoenix prevailing at Warren.

Those two squads could meet up again this weekend when East hosts its 24-team tournament, which is regarded as one of the state’s best competitions.

“Our offense is where it needs to be, so we’ve been focusing in practice on our defense and blocking so we can stop really good teams,” Fiore said. “We did a good job of blocking and really picked it up defensively in the second game. We did a good job of closing blocks, which caused them to try to hit around us and led to some hitting errors.

“We have a rotation where we have multiple positions that are still up in the air.

We’re really deep this year and have guys battling it out and that’s a luxury. It helps us in practice since we’ll put a second team on the floor against our first team and it’s really competitive. You can’t really underestimate just how important that is to a team.”

Lemont’s Petzoldt goes out on top Senior helps Lindenwood men’s bowling claim national collegiate title VIEWS Dick Goss Joey Petzoldt always has been proud of being the first male bowler from Lemont to qualify for the IHSA state finals. In fact, he accomplished the feat twice.

Now he has done that one better.

Petzoldt, a senior, was a regular on the Lindenwood University men’s bowling team that won the national title at the xBowling Intercollegiate Team Championships, which concluded April 18 at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center in Reno, Nev. The tournament is conducted under the Baker format. That’s where one bowler on a five-member team bowls first and sixth frames and the others bowl the second and seventh, third and eighth, fourth and ninth and fifth and tenth, respectively.

Petzoldt was the leadoff man for Lindenwood, taking good care of the first and sixth frames.

“I of course would have liked to be the fifth- and 10th-frame bowler, but I loved being in 1 and 6,” Petzoldt said. “From there, I could get everyone hyped up.

“I struggled at first at the nationals, but after our 24 games in qualifying, it was pretty much smooth sailing.”

Lindenwood, located in St. Charles, Mo., outside St. Louis, averaged 198.42 for its 24 qualifying games and entered the best-of-seven, double-elimination Baker match play as the No. 3 seed.

Of course, as Petzoldt said, “seeds don’t matter much.

Once you are in the top 16, you have a good chance to win. The 16 seed upset the No. 1 this year.”

Bowling is a different sport on the college level.

There are only 177 schools nationwide that offer men’s bowling, and the top teams can be small schools as easily

as large schools.

Lindenwood had to go all seven games before beating No. 14 Morehead State in the opening match. The Lions’ second-round battle was equally tense as they fell behind Calumet College of St. Joseph before rallying to win in seven.

Next up was No.10 San Jose State. Lindenwood clinched an automatic spot in the semifinals with a sixgame win, then enjoyed two byes.

San Jose State battled back

through the other side of the bracket and got revenge, beating the Lions in five games.

That left both teams with one loss, so they bowled again with a spot in the TV finals on the line. The winnertake-all Game 7 went to the final frame, and Lindenwood prevailed.

Then in the best-of-five championship match, Lindwood swept Urbana, 3-0, to claim the Helmer Cup. The championship match will be televised on the CBS Sports Network at 7 p.m. May 27.

“It’s an unbelievable way to go out, on top,” Petzoldt said. “We had the talent to win. But why I really thought we would win was everyone gets along so well. Our chemistry is unbelievable.”

Petzoldt had a good taste of what the nationals are like as a sophomore. In his first season in the regular lineup, Lindenwood finished third.

“We missed the TV finals by one game,” he said. “What happened sophomore year made me want to get back and win it. It’s unreal that it happened.”

Petzoldt, who played four years of volleyball at Lemont, is a mass communications major with emphasis on advertising and public relations. After graduating in May, he said he plans to continue bowling.

“I want to try to start competing in some pro-ams, some regional events, and go from there,” he said.

He said he also would like to get into radio or broadcasting. “I’m actually one of the DJs on the campus radio station,” he said.

There is no denying bowling already has served him well as evidenced by him being able to keep up with his

older sister Jenny, who was an outstanding all-around athlete at Lemont and bowler at Lindenwood.

“My sister was a motivation for me,” Petzoldt said.

“She made the TV finals her sophomore and senior years, but she came up short.

It’s about time it [a national championship] happened for our family.

“I still say Jenny is the best bowler in our household ... and she would probably agree.”

Crawford comes through with 35 saves in Game 6 win

By JEFF ARNOLD jarnold@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – Corey Crawford sat in his dressing room stall Sunday afternoon, talking in low tones that came no where close to the volume his play over the previous 60 minutes had produced.

Around him, his Blackhawks teammates referred to him as the ultimate penalty-killer and a leader who rarely allows previous struggles to rattle a confidence that is required of Stanley Cup-winning goalies.

But after making 35 saves in Sunday’s series-clinching, 5-1 win over St. Louis at the United Center, Crawford sounded nothing like the hero everyone else in the room made him out to be.

Instead for Crawford, the effort was a matter of just doing what he knows is expected of him.

“I think I was pretty sharp all game,” Crawford said. “I mean, there was a little bit of penalty trouble in the second (period) and our (penalty-killing unit) was great again.

There were some big blocks by our forwards and our (defensemen).”

But in a game that remained even throughout two periods when the Blues owned a 28-11 shot advantage and had five power-play opportunities, no one was bigger than Crawford. Time after time, he deflected shots and kept the Hawks in the game until the third period when they exploded for four goals.

Among the biggest moments came midway through the second period when Crawford knocked down a pointblank shot and then dove to keep the puck from reaching the back of the net as it slid dangerously along the goal line.

What could have been a huge momentum shift was – to Crawford – just a instant out of what was almost three dozen chances to do his job.

Crawford, who assumed the blame for the Hawks losses in the series’ first two games, said he maintained a shot-toUp next shot mentality throughout the vs. Minnesota- series. He never allowed himColorado self to allow his winner confidence to waver – a trait, his teammates said – that makes him one of the team’s most valuable assets.

Even after the series-clinching victory in which he played such a key role, Crawford wasn’t overly eager to take too much of the credit for helping the Hawks advance. But Sunday’s performance – as much as Crawford didn’t want to admit it – was a major difference-maker.

Even if Crawford brushed praise aside – an attitude that came as no surprise to his

teammates.

“That’s what a leader does – he’s not afraid to take the blame and take the criticism and that negative attention and he pulls through it,” Hawks captain Jonathan Toews said. “Your teammates and your team respond to play and behavior like that. So it was a pretty amazing job by him.”

After Sunday’s win, Hawks coach Joel Quenneville characterized Crawford’s play with a series of words.

Tremendous. Outstanding.

Quick. Sharp. Square. Efficient. He then said Crawford – along with the Hawks penalty kill – was the reason why the Hawks won Game 6 and the series.

For Crawford, however, it just represented another day on the job, a chance to rest up before getting another opportunity to keep the Hawks moving closer to their second straight Stanley Cup. “It’s always nice to get a little bit of rest in the playoffs,” Crawford said. “I’m sure we’re going to be eager to get the next one.”

points and 6.8 rebounds in the series. In Game 4 on Sunday, he shot 13 for 16 from the field and scored a career-high 32 points.

What’s refreshing about the 6-foot-9 forward/center is that he’s immune to getting caught up in his success.

There will be a time when he sits back and weighs whether he has reached the same core status as Joakim Noah and Derrick Rose, but it isn’t now as he helps the Bulls fight to stay alive.

Hoffman wins Late Model opener SUBMITTED REPORTS MORRIS – Joliet’s Scott Koerner led for much of the race, but Eddie Hoffman slipped past him late and claimed the 44-lap Late Model feature Friday night in the season opener for stock car racing at Grundy County Speedway.

Koerner finished second, followed by Larry Schuler, Chris Cooling and James Gregait. Billy Knippenberg, Ricky Baker, David Einhaus, Dean Patterson and Dan Odell rounded out the top 10.

ORRIS – One hot August afternoon in 1997, Debi Wright of Morris was pulling weeds in her garden when something flew up into her left eye. She brushed it away and continued her weeding.

The next morning, her eye was red and hurting. By early afternoon, the hurt had become agony.

“The pain was so bad I could hardly stand it,” Wright said.

An optometrist immediately found the cause. A tiny piece of garden matter had pierced right into the black of her pupil, like an arrow going into a bull’s-eye, Wright said.

The optometrist consulted with a visiting ophthalmologist, who was concerned.

“He said, ‘Get in your car and follow me to Sycamore.

This could be serious,’ ” Wright said.

Wright’s husband Mike drove them to the doctor’s office, where the doctor diagnosed a severe cornea infection. The infection was so bad that three weeks later, Wright underwent a corneal transplant.

In the days following the surgery, Wright experienced complication after complication, including low intraocular pressure and stitches breaking. Within a five-day period, Wright had three more eye surgeries. Two of the surgeries corrected the pressure; the last re-sutured the wound.

When Wright wasn’t being transported back and forth to the clinic, she was sleeping, “drugged up” with painkillers. Because of the medicine, Wright felt little pain until the night before her eye patch was to be removed. Wright had run out of painkillers, she said, and woke up feeling as if her eye was on fire “It was pain like I have

Wright is now an advocate of wearing eye protection. never experienced in my life,” Wright said. “Then the next morning, the pain was just gone.”

Wright healed quickly and returned to teaching kindergarten at Seneca Grade School. A year later, Wright’s body began rejecting the new cornea, but anti-rejection medication solved the problem, she said. Except for astigmatism in that eye, Wright is now fine.

Her story is not uncommon. Eye injuries occur frequently and serious eye injuries are not always immediately obvious, said Dr. David Morimoto of Associated Ophthalmologists in Joliet, as they cause no symptoms.

However, despite the lack of discomfort or pain, delaying medical attention for eye injuries may allow damaged areas to worsen and result in permanent blindness.

“The problem is sometimes you don’t know if your eye is injured,” Morimoto said.

“Even if an object is lodged in

the back of your eye, sometimes there is no pain until the eyeball is infected and there is irreversible blindness.”

That’s why Morimoto advises his patients to have potential eye injuries examined immediately by an eye doctor or, if after hours, at the emergency room. Better still, he added, avoid the injury in the first place.

“The biggest thing is prevention,” Morimoto said.

Prevention, Morimoto said, means wearing protective eyewear. Impact-resistant plastic protective eyewear is the best, he said. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends them for any activity where objects might unexpectedly fly into the eye.

The AAO also said that nearly half of all eye injuries occur in and around the home, with nearly 40 percent being caused by home repairs, yard work, and cleaning and cooking. Sports also can cause eye injuries. Morimoto said

he’s seen plenty of baseball injuries.

“Usually it’s the fielders who get hit the most,” Morimoto said. “The size of the baseball makes it fit nicely into the eye socket. Plus, the velocity of the ball is usually great.”

Tennis balls and racquetballs tend to cause eye injuries for the same reason, he added. However, some of the worst injuries he has seen came from BB guns.

“I really hate BB guns and pellet guns,” he said.

“Kids think they’re just toys, but they can cause blinding injuries.”

Ditto for fireworks, Morimoto said, especially bottle rockets. People tend to approach bottle rockets that have not fired and look right down on them to inspect them, he added. Then they go off.

Still, even bystanders aren’t safe. Morimoto recalled a patient who was sitting on her front porch on a warm summer day when a piece of debris flew from a neighbor’s

Anytime an injury occurs, Morimoto said, promptly seek medical attention.

“And don’t touch it or rub it,” Morimoto said. “Don’t use tweezers to try to get a foreign body out.”

For chemical injuries, head for the nearest garden hose or faucet and flush the eye with water for at least 20 minutes, Morimoto said. Then call 911.

“Time is of the essence,” Morimoto said.

This week, we are looking at strong jump shifts. The opener bids one of a suit and responder makes a single jump in a new suit.

Responder shows 13-16 high-card points and either a one-suiter with an excellent suit (in principle, with a play for at most one loser opposite a low singleton), or a two-suiter with at least nine cards divided 5-plus - 4-plus in the responder’s suit and the opener’s suit.

In the old days, a strong jump shift promised some 17-19 high-card points. This was not a good idea. First, a hand that strong almost never came up; and second, with that amount of power, responder did best to make a quiet response to learn as much as possible about the distribution and strength of his partner’s hand before naming the final contract.

In today’s deal, responder’s second jump showed that his suit was completely solid.

North, after rebidding two no-trump to find out which hand-type his partner had, used Blackwood before signing off in six hearts.

After West leads the club queen, how should South proceed?

Declarer is faced with three losers in his hand: one diamond and two clubs. He does not have time to play a diamond to establish a discard, because East would win with his ace and cash the club king.

South must win with dummy’s club ace, play a heart to his ace, and take the three spade tricks, discarding his diamond loser.

Then declarer gives up a club.

Shortly before our first child was born, my in-laws bought a new camera. They bring it along to every visit and constantly take pictures of all of us. Neither my husband nor I likes having our pictures taken. My in-laws have thousands of pictures of all of us already.

The biggest problem is that they don’t have a relationship with their grandchildren because of this. They complain that the kids “don’t like them.” They feel they should therefore visit more often, but in reality, these visits consist of nonstop photo-snapping, and no quality time is spent with either of the children. Start treating learning disability as early as possible Dear Doctor K: I think my son may have a learning disability.

How can I tell if there really is a problem?

Dear Reader: Most kids have some difficulty in school at one time or another, and usually it’s nothing to worry about. Sometimes, though, it can be a sign of a learning disability.

“Learning disability” is a broad term that can cover different types of problems. A child with a learning disability may have a hard time receiving, organizing, remembering or using information. The most common learning disability is trouble with reading. But some children may have trouble with math, with understanding the spoken word or with abstract ideas.

Here are some possible warning signs of learning disabilities in preschoolers and young children: Preschoolers (ages 3 to 4) • Late talking. Most kids start speaking in short phrases by 2 years. By age 3, most preschoolers have a vocabulary of 500 or more words, which they use to form three- or four-word sentences.

• Slow to learn words. Most kids are picking up and speaking single words by 15 to 18 months.

• Problems pronouncing words.

• Trouble remembering colors, numbers or letters.

• Trouble following directions.

Preschoolers can generally follow three-part commands.

• Difficulty talking and playing with children the same age. Most preschoolers can cooperate with other children and negotiate solutions to conflicts.

Early school-aged children (5 to 7 years) • Trouble connecting sounds with letters.

• Difficulty remembering everyday words.

• Continuing to reverse letters (such as b/d), flip over letters (m/w), or mix up letters and words. Reversing letters usually disappears by age 7.

• Having a hard time with basic math facts. By 5 years, most children can count five to 10 objects.

By age 7, most can count to 100.

• Not being able to recall facts.

• Trouble learning new skills.

• Memorizing things more than understanding them.

• Poor coordination. By age 6 or 7, most children can hold a pencil well enough to copy letters correctly.

• Not making friends or being able to have social conversations.

Lots of children will show one or more of these signs and not have a learning disability. But if your child shows two or more warning signs that don’t improve over several months, talk with your child’s teacher. All public schools must evaluate children when a disability is known or suspected. Many psychologists and medical centers also offer testing.

Also talk with your child’s pediatrician. Some medical conditions (for example, a hearing problem, or epilepsy) can look like a learning disability. Your pediatrician can help get your child needed testing and help.

If a problem exists, it’s important to begin treatment promptly.

You can’t “cure” a learning disability. But there are many ways to help a child with a learning disability to be successful.

Younger sibling tired of comparisons to sister Dr. Wallace: I’m in the ninth grade and my sister is in the 12th grade.

She is super intelligent and has always gotten straight A’s and is probably going to be her class valedictorian. She has already accepted a scholarship at the University of California, and my parents and I are very proud of her.

My problem is that I’m only an A/B student even though I study very hard. Because of this, some of my teachers have commented that, “You’ll have to work harder if you want to keep up with your sister.”

This really makes me feel like a dunce because I’m not my sister – I’m me, and I just can’t make all A’s. My sister is a wonderful friend to me, and I love her very much, but I hate to always be compared to her. How can I get my teachers to accept me for who I am and not always compare me with my sister? – Sad, in San Jose, Calif.

Dear Sad: There are many teachers who understand that each child is unique and should never be compared with a sibling. This is taught in teacher education classes at all colleges.

When a teacher forgets this and compares you with your sister, remind the teacher courteously not to do so. You are an excellent student in your own right, and I’m sure your parents are very proud of your accomplishments.

Dr. Wallace: I have a cousin who is the same age as I am. We are not very close, but we attend the same school.

Whenever we talk to each other, it seems like she is always trying to convince me that she is popular. All she ever talks about is how many friends she has. She is

Newspaper Enterprise Association weight of time’s passing, and lilting album closer “Forgiveness” betrays a melancholy sweetness. Not that Mueller, a drummer by trade, can’t turn things up when she wants to – “Holy Bastard” has a slow build before the horns and guitars kick in at the halfway mark, and Mueller lets loose with a fiery, Grace Potter-like verve.

• Listen to: “Radio,” stirring electro-folk with an alternative ’90s feel.

Life in a Blender, “We Already Have Birds That Sing” (Fang Records) • About: This NYC-based “chamber pop” band is aptly named. Its sound seems to blend vestiges of acts as diverse as Tom Waits, Cake, They Might Be Giants, Mojo Nixon and quite possibly Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. If that sounds like an odd mix, you’re right – but darned if it doesn’t work, as both eclectic oddball rock and winking satire.

The best tracks are the ones where bandleader Don Rauf affects an off-kilter growl that suits the offbeat material. Among these are “Tongue-Cut Sparrow,” a seedy story of a 1950s burlesque dancer that Rauf says mirrors the band’s own 25year career, and “Shards,” a Talking Heads-style tour through a recluse’s apartment: “The pencil shavings, the sourballs, the paper clip dispenser … They cheer me up,” he declares to swinging ska horns.

Songs about Frankenstein (“Frankenstein Cannot Be Stopped”), Cape Cod romance (“Falmouth”) and setting out to sea in a leaky boat (“To Sea in a Sieve”) are equally quirky and all oddly moving.

Her last album, 2010’s “Ain’t Got No Troubles,” was darn near perfect, and she continues to roll on her latest release – “Jigsaw Heart” is equal parts rollicking celebration and melancholy musing, without a clunker in the bunch.

Brent’s softer side is especially strong on this disc; the slow, sad album opener “Better This Way” beautifully captures the final throes of a doomed love affair, and the title track drips with a hard-nosed, bluesy realism about the challenges of gathering up “the scattered pieces” of a new partner’s heart. But the album has plenty of winking fun too – “Let’s Go Ahead and Fall In Love” shows that Brent never met

an innuendo she didn’t like (spackling? really?), and “Locomotive” chugs along with buoyant verve.

Kristin Mueller, “Deserts & Long Trails” (bandcamp.com) • About: Much of “Deserts” seems to take place in that drowsy limbo between sleep and awake – there’s an echoey vibe that can be hypnotic but also surreal, and not a little bit eerie.

Mueller’s tremulous vocals, meanwhile, recall Stevie Nicks at her witchiest.

Buoyed by layered harmonies, twinkling keyboards and intertwining strings and banjos, it’s a moody masterpiece.

The album’s smoky charms are its greatest strength; on “Old Records,” Mueller’s purr evokes the din of nostalgia and the

It helps that it kicks off with the stomping new track “Maps of the West,” which stands among their best.

In particular, “Airstream Transmission” offers a gruffer, even moodier take on the studio version from 2012’s “The Foundry,” owing primarily to Loss-Eaton’s laconic Lou Reed-by-way-of-Leonard Cohen drawl and downright spooky harmonica.

And “Roller Derby Queen,” a live version of the band’s vinyl single from that same year, is raw rockabilly that suggests Leland Sundries hasn’t even yet begun to swing.
