Plainfield moves on TIF process

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Village Board directed consultant S.B. Friedman to move forward on executing a tax increment financing district for the Route 30 corridor after findings ruled the dilapidated economic zone was eligible.

S.B. Friedman consultant Fran Lefor Rood presented the results of the investigation conducted by the firm, which was hired for $78,200 by the village in December.

“I think that it’ll be a good idea while looking to the future,” Mayor Michael Collins said of a potential tax increment financing, or TIF, district. “Some of those lots have been developed, but there’s a lot along there that still needs to be developed.”

Village Administrator Brian Murphy said the TIF designation process could take several months, up until August

or September.

In a TIF district, the village reinvests property taxes from within the district into the development or redevelopment of the district.

Eligibility findings

Rood said the potential TIF area was split up into two designations, improved areas and vacant blighted areas.

The area includes land along Route 30 from the intersection of Renwick Road and Peerless Drive to Spangler Road. It also includes a large blighted, undeveloped area bound between Renwick, Winding Creek Road, Spangler Road, Interstate 55 and the railroad tracks.

To be eligible for TIF funding, the improved areas needs to exhibit at least three eligibility factors. Also, at least half of the primary structures must be at least 35 years old.

The findings showed that 54 percent of the primary build-

ings were built before 1980.

Also, the collective equalized assessed value, or EAV, of the improved land declined in four out of five years, from 2008 to 2013.

Because they were constructed a long time ago, they have inadequate utilities and don’t meet contemporary development standards or village codes.

The vacant, blighted land must pass a two-factor test: a lack of growth in the EAV and it must show obsolete platting, or an inability to develop immediately.

The vacant land had declining EAV in four out of five years. And the size, shape, access to right-of-ways and compatibility with contemporary development standards were not conducive to commercial development.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Gov. Bruce Rauner has appointed Joliet resident Steven Orlando to the state’s Capital Development Board, according to a news release.

Orlando, a 35-year-old Joliet resident who said he has a Plainfield address and is vice chair for the Steven Troy Township Orlando Republican Organization, said he didn’t know he was appointed to the board until Friday’s announcement.

“It’s an honor to be appointed by the governor,” Orlando said. “I’m looking forward to getting involved with the committee.”

According to a news release from the governor’s office, Orlando brings a marketing and insurance background to the board. The Illinois Senate still

confirm must his appointment.

The Capital Development Board is the construction management agency for Illinois government, overseeing construction of state facilities such as prisons, college and university education classroom buildings, mental health hospitals and state parks, according to the board’s website.

The Capital Development Board also awards grants for elementary and secondary school construction and renovation, removes hazardous material from state-owned facilities, and remodels buildings to ensure Americans with Disabilities Act compliance.

Orlando has been a Joliet resident for 13 years. He is the vice president of Cando Insurance Agency, an insurance agency through Farmers Insurance.

He also worked at Heartland Blood Centers as a marketing representative, recruiting donors and supplying prizes and gifts for blood drives, accord-

ing to the news release. He received his bachelor’s degree from Northern Illinois University.

“When it comes to actually participating on a body as a board member, it’s my first time doing it,” Orlando said. “I would like to use my insurance and marketing background and apply those lessons for the Illinois taxpayers.”

Orlando was an ardent Rauner supporter during the governor’s victorious campaign. Orlando said he helped Rauner’s campaign as an executive for the Troy Township Republican Organization.

The state owns 8,771 buildings containing more than 101 million square feet.

“There are so many different properties and projects on the docket,” Orlando said. “I’ve already been in touch with folks in Kankakee regarding some work on [Interstate 57].”

But he said he still is making calls and getting ready for the board’s first meeting.

Moving forward

Rood said S.B. Friedman is meeting with another village consultant, Retail Strategies, Tuesday to talk more in depth about potential businesses to fill the corridor.

Also, consultants and village officials will be presenting preliminary retail concepts at an International Council of Shopping Centers conference in May, and preparing a redevelopment strategy for the Route 30 corridor, incorporating it into a TIF plan.

Area tumbling instructor opens business in Channahon Know more

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – First-time business owner and tumbling instructor Thomas “TJ” Matthews Creal said his love for the sport – coupled with his desire to be a positive role model – motivated him to start his own business.

As a lifelong area resident, the 29-year-old graduate of Chicago State University last month celebrated the grand opening of TJ’s Tumbling Dynasty in Channahon. Before the opening, he coached for Five Star Cheer Academy at the same location, 2621 City’s Edge Drive in Channahon.

“This is my first, so this is huge for me,” Matthews Creal said during a Thursday evening tumbling class in Channahon.

He said he credits his father and other positive role models in his life for his successes – which include a bachelor’s degree in health sciences, a decade’s worth of coaching recreational tumbling classes and area cheerleading teams and a one-year stint with the Jesse White Tumblers.

Before opening TJ’s Tumbling Dynasty, Matthews Creal played baseball for Chicago State University and for a short time participated in the Joliet Slammers baseball team spring training.

He said he hopes students will see him as a positive role model – just as his father was to him. “[My father] raised me to be an athlete. As a child, my dad would get me up early in the morning and would make me run a couple of miles,” Matthews Creal said. “My doors are open to whoever needs

Diemer, of Minooka, during a class last week to help her with a particular move called the “standing tuck” – a backward flip where a person’s knees and hips are bent and drawn into the chest. It’s considered a significant milestone in cheerleading. “[Diemer] is so close to getting this on her own. She’s ready,” Matthews Creal said. “[Spotting] makes a huge difference.”

With some assistance and encouragement, Diemer landed each and every standing tuck – something she said she often struggles with on her own.

“It’s more comfortable when he’s there. When I’m by myself, I just psych myself out. He gives you a lot of confidence,” Diemer said.

Tyeler Delrose, 18, a varsity cheerleader at Joliet West High School, said she has trained with Matthews Creal for some time. She said she gains confidence with his coaching style.

“No matter how much you say you can’t do it, he’s always going to say you can.

You could literally be the worst mentally, but by the end, you’re going to want to throw everything into it.”

Matthews Creal said he’s excited about starting his own business. He said enrollment is open for classes throughout the week.

Bergstrom will close Joliet plant

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Any move away from community-based services for seniors and people with disabilities would be detrimental to Illinois and its residents, said Cheryl Lockwood with the Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging.

“We know the State of Illinois is in a serious financial crisis at this time. So to say this is a challenging time is an understatement,” Lockwood said. “But [we’re being asked] to do more with less funding than is available.”

Lockwood’s comments came Monday during the area agency’s annual legislative forum at the Prairie Bluff Golf Club in Lockport. More than 75 people attended the forum, designed for seniors, caregivers, advocates and people with disabilities to hear from lawmakers about the state’s budget crisis.

Budget talks are ramping up in Springfield with just five weeks remaining in the spring legislative session. But there are no easy answers to Illinois’ $1.6 billion deficit as Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and a Democratic-controlled Legislature craft a spending plan for the next fiscal year, which starts July 1.

Further budget cuts would hinder the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living’s renewed effort to increase housing, transportation and accessibility in the region, said Sam Knight, community organizer with the local agency.

Knight has fought for increased bus services in Will County for years, but buses still do not run on Sundays, he said. There remain buildings in the two-county region that are not accessible, he said, despite the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act 25 years ago.

State lawmakers didn’t have much in the way of good news for attendees. But they all expressed a desire to avoid major spending cuts to community-based services for seniors and people with disabilities.

“We know how beneficial community-based services are. In the long run, the programs, the expenditures make a whole lot more sense,” said state Rep. Emily McAsey, D-Lockport. “They are happy in their own homes, they’re in the community ... and the costs associated are significantly less than if individuals were placed in other circumstances, whether assisted living or housing services.”

Democrat lawmakers pointed at Rauner for recent cuts to services to fix this year’s budget shortfall, but state Rep. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield, was quick to point out the funding crisis is rooted in the spending plan approved last year by a Democratic-controlled Legislature and thenGov. Pat Quinn.

JOLIET – Caterpillar supplier Bergstrom Inc. plans to begin layoffs Friday at its Joliet plant, which will be shut down, according to a report the company made to the state.

Eighty workers will be laid off, according to Bergstrom’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification.

The WARN notice was filed more than a month before Caterpillar Inc. announced it had decided to lay off 230 workers at its Joliet plant as it moves two production lines to Mexico.

The Joliet Bergstrom facility is a contract plant “dedicated to assembling cabs for Caterpillar,” according to the company’s website.

Bergstrom officials in Joliet and at the corporate office in Rockford could not be reached immediately Monday for comment.

According to Bergstrom’s WARN notice, the Joliet plant is being closed because of a relocation. The ending layoff date is July 31.

The Bergstrom plant opened in Joliet in 1998. At

the time, the plant’s arrival was met with concern by the Machinists union that represents Caterpillar workers in Joliet because production was being outsourced to Bergstrom, a nonunion operation.

State Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, also a former worker at the Caterpillar plant in Joliet and now secretary-treasurer for District 8 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace workers, said he remembers when the cab work was moved to Bergstrom.

“When I first started out there, that’s one of the first things I did was putting together cabs,” Walsh said.

“We got it fine-tuned so they fit like a glove. The next thing you know, they’re being shipped out and going to Bergstrom.”

Caterpillar announced Jan. 15 it was considering a relocation of the two Caterpillar production lines to Mexico, but would not make a final decision until March.

The Bergstrom WARN notice was filed Feb. 17.

Caterpillar announced March 20 it had decided to relocate the Joliet production lines.

District 86 students to perform in community music celebration

Industrial building planned in Bolingbrook

Event part of ‘Children for Peace’ initiative

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Public Schools District 86 students will show off more than 700 pieces of fine art and perform in a community musical Wednesday.

The musical, “Celebrating Achievement Through the Arts,” will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Rialto Square Theatre, 102 N. Chicago St. Tickets are $3 and will be available at the box office.

Before the show begins, people can check out a student art exhibit starting at 6 p.m. It features more than 700 pieces of student work.

More than 165 students district-wide will perform in the 12th annual Children for Peace musical celebration,

which will last an hour.

Sandy Zalewski, District 86 spokeswoman, said the event will feature band, choir and jazz band music.

“It’s a celebration we have for the end of the school year,” she said.

Last year’s Children for Peace event marked the 100th anniversary for the Joliet Grade School Band.

Children for Peace is a district initiative that instills in children peaceful strategies to resolve issues, school officials said. The initiative also recognizes others who contribute and support peace in the community.

Students engage in activities such as food drives, anti-bullying curriculum, art exhibits, music curriculum, poetry or essay contests and

acts of kindness.

More than 11,000 students take part in projects throughout the school year to develop models of peaceful behavior, promote kindness, encourage positive self-esteem and foster constructive student relations, school officials said.

Zalewski said Children for Peace began about a decade ago. At School Board meetings, board members and audience members stand and recite the peace pledge.

“It’s part of our conflict resolution program. … It’s just to encourage students to be nice to each other,” she said.

BOLINGBROOK – An industrial real estate firm has announced plans for a 116,000-square-foot industrial property in Bolingbrook.

Molto Properties said it plans to begin construction on the speculative industrial property this spring at 1055 Remington Blvd., at the corner of Remington Boulevard and Veterans Parkway, according to a release from the company.

About half of the space – 57,220 square feet – already has been leased to Baldor Chicago Inc., Molto said in its news release.

The new building will provide Baldor more space, increase its visibility and provide parking for employ-

ees, visitors and customers, according to Molto.

Baldor Chicago will occupy its portion of the building upon completion by year-end.

Culver’s of Plainfield to hold police fundraiser

PLAINFIELD – For the second year in a row, Culver’s of Plainfield will raise funds for the local police department.

A portion of sales from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday will be donated to the Plainfield Law Enforcement Explorer Group, which gives training tools for those pursuing careers in law enforcement. The restaurant will offer 99-cent kids meals with the purchase of a value basket, and the Plainfield DARE Viper and K9 Unit will be in attendance.

Rialto urges state law to control phony tickets JOLIET – You could pay $595 for a ticket to see Engelbert Humperdinck at the Rialto Square Theatre – and not even get in.

If you pay $595 for that show, Rialto Executive Director Randy Green said, you bought a phony ticket.

Green will be in Springfield this week urging legislators to pass a state law that would require more disclosure from ticket brokers and resellers, some of whom are not even selling legitimate tickets.

On Monday, Green pointed to one website that advertised only 10 tickets remaining for the Humperdinck performance on May 8. Prices on the website were $93, $208 and $595.

Two problems with that, he said.

“I’ll guarantee you that $93 is not even our top ticket price,” Green said. And, “There’s probably 300 tickets left for the show.”

Tickets on the Rialto Square Theatre website ranged from $38.50 to $68.50.

Green said it’s not unusual for theater-goers to show up at the Rialto with phony tickets.

In one instance, three people had a ticket for the same seat.

If someone shows up with a phony ticket, Green said, the Rialto tries to accommodate them. They are not necessarily turned away, he said.

But, Green added, “We don’t want people with fraudulent tickets thinking they can get in whenever they want to.”

House Bill 3103, which amends the Ticket Sale and Resale Act, was approved, 1160, April 15 by the House. The bill is scheduled to be heard Thursday by the Senate Commerce and Economic Development Committee.

Legislation to increase disclosure died in the Senate last year when legitimate third-party brokers made a case that it was too sweeping.

Green said the bill was rewritten and appears to be in better shape for passage.

“I’m also trying to fight corporate identity theft.

Some of these sites ... they say Rialto Square Theatre and they have pictures of the theater.”

Randy Green Rialto executive director The bill requires more disclosure from third-party brokers and imposes price limits on the resale of tickets. Brokers and resellers also would be required to have refund policies.

Another bill provision would require that brokers and resellers state they are not the box office for the venue or its licensed ticket agent.

That’s important, Green said.

“I’m also trying to fight corporate identity theft,” he said. “Some of these sites you go onto, they say Rialto Square Theatre and they have pictures of the theater.”

Green said fraudulent ticket sales have become a nationwide problem.

State Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, is a chief co-sponsor of the bill with Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Aurora.

Kifowit, Walsh noted, has the Paramount Theatre (in her district). “It’s been kind of a coalition consisting of the small theaters and civic centers that have been pushing this.”

State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, is a co-chief sponsor in the Senate.

The Senate committee that will hear the bill Thursday is chaired by Sen. Linda Holmes, a Democratic legislator whose district also includes Aurora.

Meanwhile the staff at Rodeway Inn, 1730 McDonough St., called police to say the Romeoville man made several attempts to bribe them for access to a second-floor room. According to reports, the man told employees his girlfriend was staying in the room.

Gregory said police learned the room had been vacated when the melee occurred, but staff allowed them to search.

They reportedly found a loaded handgun, cocaine and heroin in the room safe, which was open.

Gregory said the man was “uncooperative” with officers and refused treatment for scratches to his face. The woman who’d reportedly been in the Rodeway Inn was not

located.

Meanwhile, White returned to the Red Roof Inn about 11 a.m. and was questioned by police. She allegedly admitted to hitting the parked vehicles with the minivan.

White, of the 300 block of North Broadway, was arrested on charges of aggravated battery, reckless conduct, domestic battery and vandalism and booked into the Will County jail.

JOLIET – An estranged couple. A drunken teenage girl. Four wrecked cars in the parking lot of one motel and a gun and drugs in a safe at another.

It was an eventful Sunday morning on McDonough Street, police said.

At 7:15 a.m., police were sent to the Red Roof Inn, 1750 Tyreesa McDonough L. White St., after witnesses saw a fight between a 24-year-old Romeoville man and his girlfriend, Tyreesa L. White, 24, Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said.

White was in the parking lot when she and a 17-yearold girl arrived in a blue 2009 Dodge Caravan, Gregory said, and both females got out to punch the man.

“They got back inside, White in the driver’s seat, and tried to run him over after he kicked the vehicle,” Gregory said. “She backed up trying to hit him several times and rammed four cars in the parking lot – causing heavy damage to each vehicle, which had to be towed from the scene.”

Joliet motel melee leads to arrest, drug seizure

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Three people were arrested Sunday after authorities said a late-night computer sale went awry in Joliet.

William L. Prater, 37, went to a residence in the 100 block of Seeser Street at 12:30 a.m. to sell a computer to a 50-year-old man for $50, according to Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory.

“The man [told police] he kept it for a while and then told William to come back and get it, he didn’t want it any longer,” Gregory said.

Prater reportedly told the man: “Either give me $50 for the computer or we’re going to fight,” and returned at 8:24 p.m. to demand the man come outside, Gregory said.

Meanwhile, “Edward A. Prater, 36, kicked in the door of the residence and punched a 57-year-old visitor in the face – knocking him out,” Gregory said.

When the 50-year-old man went to help his friend, William Prater came in and began punching him in the head while Edward Prater kicked him in the stomach. Gregory said the two-on-one fight moved to the front porch, where “the victim thought they were trying to kill him and bit William on the left bicep and calf.”

The struggle was then joined by Tanya M. George, 30, who “came onto the porch and bit the victim all over his back,” Gregory said. Police reports identify George as Edward Prater’s girlfriend.

After police stopped the brawl, the Praters, whose relationship was not listed, were arrested on charges of home invasion and aggravated battery. Edward Prater also was charged with vandalism.

George was charged with aggravated battery and marijuana possession. All three suspects reside in the 400 block of Morgan Street, according to Will County Jail records.

How he got to be a contestant, Jordan is not so sure.

“A producer came out and asked, ‘How are you? What do you do?’ ” Jordan recounted.

“I said, ‘I’m retired twice.’ She

JOLIET – Ronald Jordan of Joliet, come on down.

Jordan, 62, a retired Illinois State Police employee, will appear Wednesday on the game show “The Price Is Right.”

“It was a lot of fun,” Jordan said. “It was hilarious. Mostly because of Drew Carey – even between takes. He’s very personable.”

Carey is the modern-day host of the show, although “The Price Is Right” probably still is associated by many with the name Bob Barker, who hosted the show from 1972 to 2007.

It’s the longest-running game show on TV, and Jordan said he has wanted to be on the show for a long time.

When he and significant other Gayle Vojtanek made their first post-retirement trip as snow birds to California this winter, seeing “The Price Is Right” in person was a must, he said.

Jordan is used to confidentiality, having operated under those conditions both with the state police, where he was a civilian employee in charge of fingerprinting, and in the Air Force.

Well, the Air Force may have been stricter.

“The Price Is Right” can only take away any prizes he “may or may not have won” if he leaks what happened, Jordan said.

Jordan said he began watching “The Price Is Right” early in his Air Force career, but never had many opportunities to watch the show during his working days. Now that he’s retired, he watches the show every morning.

“I watch ‘Let’s Make a Deal’ and ‘The Price Is Right,’ ” he said. “After those are over, I think, ‘What am I going to do for the rest of the day?’ ”

OBITUARIES SHIRLEY ANN BEATTY Shirley Ann Beatty (nee Cassidy), age 79, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 24, 2015, surrounded by loving family at Salem Village Nursing Home.

She was the only child to John and Helen (nee Betz) Cassidy. Resided in Joliet most of her life but was born and raised in Columbia Missouri. She was employed by the Joliet Herald News as a circulation manager for several years.

She was a loving wife, mother, nana, and a loyal and dear friend to many.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lawrence Beatty Jr.; three sons, Mark Conn, Richard Conn and James Beatty; and a son-in-law, Jeff Fritz.

Survived by his best friend and wife of 66 years, Dorothy, nee Wendland.

Mac was a US Army veteran, serving shortly after the end of WW II. He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Church, Joliet, graduating grade school there, and was a graduate of Joliet Catholic High School. Mac was employed by Formax Inc. of Mokena for 25 years as a buyer. Mac was a proud and active member of the Pershey family, attending innumerable family reunions throughout his 87 years.

He and Dorothy were avid travelers, visiting over 13 countries.

They also visited the majority of U.S. states, many of them in a motor home, sharing the adventures with his late friend, cousin, and business partner, Dennis Schneider and his wife Carmen. Many Friday and Saturday nights were spent raucously playing cards with long time friends, and now neighbors, Bruce and Geri Baxter. Mac loved family gatherings, friends, cooking out, music, beer, and a good time.

He took up running in his 50’s, after a heart attack, and continued running into his 70’s, even after heart bypass surgery in 1988. He was very proud of his bike ride across Illinois with a couple of his daughters when in his late 50’s, although it proved challenging to his children! He played a large part in all of his grandchildren’s lives, helping, along with Dorothy, in any way possible at all times. He lived long enough to see his oldest

grandson become a grandfather - no small feat!

Mac will be sorely missed by all, most of all by Dorothy. As Mac said, “I love her madly,” and as she said “When we met, my friends in Arkansas couldn’t believe I had such a handsome man in uniform seeing me, especially a Yankee!” They truly epitomized living up to the promise of remaining devoted to each other “through good times and bad, in sickness and in health.”

“May the road rise up to meet you.

May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand.”

He was raised and educated in Dwight, where he graduated from Dwight High School with the Class of 1973. Daniel was known for his love of attending stock car races and car shows, playing horseshoes, and most especially spending time with his grandson.

Sam Zell donates $4M to Rauner’s political fund

CHICAGO – Billionaire businessman Sam Zell has donated $4 million to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s new political action committee.

Documents filed Monday with the Illinois State Board of Elections show Zell is the first donor to the Republican governor’s fund, called Turnaround Illinois.

Rauner created the political action committee to help push his pro-business agenda in the Democratic-controlled Legislature. The money will be used to support lawmakers and candidates who back his agenda and to oppose those who do not.

Among Rauner’s legislative priorities are curbing the power of labor unions, lowering the cost of workers’ compensation insurance and freezing property taxes. He also wants to move public employees from pensions to a less-generous 401(k) style retirement fund.

The committee is separate from Rauner’s campaign fund, which has about $20 million.

though program spokeswoman Lynne Baker said grants were withheld pre-emptively and students won’t have to pay back anything.

Grants through the commission average $3,500 for students at public schools and $3,900 for those at private institutions.

A $500,000 cut in funding looms for a Chicago sickle cell center at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System. Last year, the emergency pain center treated 820 people with the rare disorder, which the center’s Dr. Victor Gordeuk said is mainly diagnosed in African-Americans.

“Patients with sickle cell disease require pain medication intravenously,” Gordeuk said.

“We have a dedicated care center to treat these episodes.

If funding is removed, it will be very hard for us to continue

those services.”

CHICAGO – A group of suburban leaders says Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposed reduction to local governments’ share of income tax revenues could equal public safety cuts.

More than a dozen mayors, presidents and administrators Monday protested the 50 percent reduction to money that cities receive through the Local Government Distributive Fund. That’s how income tax revenues are distributed. Their efforts include a website and follow pleas from southern Illinois mayors.

Trial begins in 2010 slayings of Chicago officer, official

CHICAGO – The shootings deaths of a Chicago police officer and a former Chicago Housing Authority officer were cold-blooded, “execution-style” slayings, prosecutors said Monday during opening statements in the murder trial.

Timothy Herring, 24, is accused in the deaths of 46-year-old Michael Flisk, a police evidence technician, and 44-year-old Stephen Peters.

Prosecutors accuse Herring of shooting both men in the head once, then shooting them again after he saw one of them move.

Prosecutors say Herring broke into Peters’ car and shot the men after he learned Flisk found fingerprints. They say Herring wanted to avoid returning to prison.

“He shoots each man one time in the head as they lay on the ground – execution-style, cold-blooded murder,” Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Thomas Mahoney told jurors.

Work to start later this year on fertilizer plant

TUSCOLA – A patch of land in rural eastern Illinois is to become the site of a $1.4 billion fertilizer plant.

Cronus Chemicals said in October it would build the plant near Tuscola, a town about 20 miles south of Champaign.

The Cronus Fertilizers plant will employ about 175 people; another 2,000 temporary construction jobs are expected as the plant is being built.

Spokesman Dave Lundy said Cronus hasn’t set a date to start the project but that it will be this year. He expects the plant to be fully operational in 2018.

Nepal quake death toll tops 4,000; villages plead for aid

By KATY DAIGLE and BINAJ GURUBACHARYA The Associated Press KATHMANDU, Nepal – As the death toll from Nepal’s devastating earthquake climbed past 4,000, aid workers and officials in remote, shattered villages near the epicenter pleaded Monday for food, shelter and medicine.

Help poured in after Saturday’s magnitude-7.8 quake, with countries large and small sending medical and rescue teams, aircraft and basic supplies. The small airport in the capital of Kathmandu was congested and chaotic, with some flights forced to turn back early in the day.

Buildings in parts of the city were reduced to rubble, and there were shortages of food, fuel, electricity and shelter. As bodies were recovered, relatives cremated the dead along the Bagmati River, and at least a dozen pyres burned late into the night.

Conditions were far worse

in the countryside, with rescue workers still struggling to reach mountain villages two days after the earthquake.

Some roads and trails to the Gorkha district, where the quake was centered, were blocked by landslides – but also by traffic jams that regularly clog the route north of Kathmandu.

“There are people who are not getting food and shelter.

I’ve had reports of villages where 70 percent of the houses have been destroyed,” said Udav Prashad Timalsina, the top official for the Gorkha region.

World Vision aid worker Matt Darvas arrived in the district in the afternoon and said almost no assistance had reached there ahead of him.

Newer concrete buildings were intact, Darvas said, but some villages were reported to be devastated. He cited a “disturbing” report from the village of Singla, where up to 75 percent of the buildings may have collapsed, and there has been no contact

since Saturday night.

In the villages that have been reached, World Vision said the greatest needs were for search-and-rescue teams, food, blankets, tarps and medical treatment.

Timalsina said 223 people had been confirmed dead in Gorkha district but he presumed “the number would go up because there are thousands who are injured.”

He said his district had not received enough help from the central government, but Jagdish Pokhrel, a clearly exhausted army spokesman, said nearly the entire 100,000-soldier army was involved in rescue operations.

“We have 90 percent of the army out there working on search and rescue,” he said.

“We are focusing our efforts on that, on saving lives.”

Nepal’s Home Ministry said the country’s death toll had risen to 4,010. Another 61 were killed in neighboring India, and China’s official Xinhua News Agency reported 25 dead in Tibet.

Recently, I read a few news articles that shocked me awake and flooded my heart with tears.

In one story, a father murdered his 19-day-old girl, a mom doused her infant with gas, a mom and stepdad beat and tortured her 3-year-old son to death, a father killed his 2-year-old daughter and fed her to his pit bulls, and in Utah a mom killed at least six of her infants.

These cases are true and beyond horrific. Actually, the only word which describes this is demonic.

From 1976 to 2007, there were 94,146 cases of filicide – that’s 3,000 a year, or 8.2 a day. This is only the kids murdered by their own parents – not including the deaths caused by those other than parents. It doesn’t get much lower than that.

Are atrocities such as these a sign of the end times that the Bible and other religious and ancient writings predict?

The world’s population is 7.2 billion, and 6.9 billion belong to a religion. At first, I thought the numbers were way off, but not so. Evidently, many folks who confess to these religions are not doing something right.

The state of man and the evil we do is at an all-time high. Even the weather has seen nearly every record ever set broken, from 2011 to now. Nature seems very confused. The Earth is aflame worldwide with blood running in the streets.

These are just a few of the common predictions from ancient days that are to precede the end times.

It might be time to wake up.

Why isn’t Speaker Madigan voting on legislation?

A couple weeks ago, I started noticing House Speaker Michael Madigan wasn’t voting on most legislation during his chamber’s floor debates.

Madigan was feeling under the weather that week and was ill enough that a leadership meeting with the governor couldn’t be scheduled until a few days later, so I let it go.

But the pattern continued the following week. A spot check of roll calls showed Madigan was listed as present and accounted for but hadn’t voted either for or against much of anything.

What the heck?

Madigan’s historical voting record is all over the map because, in the past, he has tended to vote for all of his Democratic members’ bills unless he has a strong ideological position in opposition, or if he has a conflict of interest.

Madigan’s spokesman, Steve Brown, told me the speaker decided in January he only wants to make “informed” votes. There are just so many bills out there, and

Huh? Madigan and his top staff examine each and every bill and amendment back and forth, upside down, at least once a week and often several times a week. So if any legislator is “informed,” it’s Madigan.

Brown also agreed with my own observation that Madigan could be patterning his behavior after the U.S. House speaker, who traditionally votes on only the rarest of occasions.

Madigan did vote for a recent fiscal 2015 state budget fix, but that’s probably because he was a party to the agreement. He has voted on a handful of other bills, but there doesn’t seem to be much of a pattern.

Brown said it was conceivable Madigan would step in and vote if one of his members

needed an extra push to get his or her bill to the minimum majority of 60.

It’s possible, I suppose, Madigan doesn’t want to tip his hand to the governor, or anyone else for that matter, about where he actually stands on legislation. But I was told by others this has nothing to do with the new governor, although they refused to say what really was going on.

Keep in mind, this is a guy who is legendary in Springfield for his mildly eccentric habits. He eats an apple at noon every day. He eats dinner at precisely 7 p.m. – almost always at one of two Springfield restaurants (unless he’s in the rare mood for a steak, and then he and his people head out to that spot), and he eats the same meal and drinks the same wine every time. A severe crisis erupted at one of those restaurants several years ago when weekend staff accidentally served all of Madigan’s special wine to some tourists.

There is, or at least seems to be, a reason for every single

thing he does. He makes no moves without considering all the possible angles. It took him eight hours to issue a press release after Rod Blagojevich was arrested, for crying out loud.

So, after 44 years in the Illinois House, for this man to suddenly and without a credible explanation decide to stop voting on almost all legislation is simply bizarre.

And his top lieutenants are enforcing Madigan’s new policy with a vengeance. I’m told a couple staffers were upbraided last week when they pushed Madigan’s roll call button on some legislation. They reportedly were told in no uncertain terms never to do that again.

Some have speculated darkly without evidence that maybe some investigators are poking around Madigan’s voting record. But, really, if something is up (and there is zero evidence of that) then why change his behavior now, after it’s too late? That just doesn’t make sense.

Maybe he’s just trying to play with everybody’s head. I

just don’t know. Whatever is going on, Madigan certainly wouldn’t allow any of his members to behave this way. I can just see it now ... .

Madigan: “Why aren’t you voting?”

Member: “I only want to make informed votes, Mr. Speaker, sir.”

Madigan: “Then read the analyses that my staff writes for you and pick a button.

Better yet, just let my staff ‘inform’ you of your best voting options. Your constituents sent you here to vote on legislation, not sit there like an armless bump on a log with zero political future, because I’m going to find somebody else to take your seat if you don’t start voting right now.”

Member: “Yes, sir. It’ll never happen again, sir. I’m sorry, sir. May I please shine your apple, sir?”

Madigan: “Too late. It’s 12:30.”

Lincoln-Way Central beats rival West

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – There’s nothing like a win over your crosstown rivals, especially when they’ve enjoyed the upper hand against you of late.

Throw in the need to bounce back from a close loss to another rival in order to continue a recent run of success and stay atop the conference, and you have the scenario facing Lincoln-Way Central’s softball team Monday as it hosted Lincoln-Way West.

The Knights used a fourrun fourth inning to take control as they won for the eighth time in their last 10 games, capturing a 5-2 SouthWest Suburban Conference Red victory over the Warriors to claim New Lenox bragging rights.

“We’ve been playing real well lately in all facets of the game,” Knights coach Jeff Tarala said. “We’re a good hitting team, we field the ball really well, and our pitching has been doing extremely well.

And it was a good win over a good program. Coach (Heather) Novak and coach (Dick) Mandella do a very good job with those girls, and they’re always good.

“And it was a good bounceback win for us. We had a tough loss to Lincoln-Way East in the last inning, so this shows a lot of the character of the girls. This is as rock solid of a team coachingwise that I’ve ever had. They’re very close with each other and pick each other up. These girls are extremely close, and they play well together.”

Naidelyn Medina (2 for 3) led off the fourth for Central (13-7, 5-0) by getting a single to center.

“I was really just trying to attack the ball and going to the right side to get those two runs in,” Klahn said.

“They’re a good team, so we definitely wanted to go out

there and score as many as we could against them to get the lead. They’ve beaten us the past couple of years, so we all us came together and were pumped for this game so that we could beat them.

“Our pitchers have been throwing well, everyone is coming together, and we’re all trying to do our best so that we can keep winning these games. We’re all excited to be here, we pick each other up and have each others’ backs.

Everyone is just so positive.”

Winning pitcher Allie Wesel (7-2) managed to keep the Warriors (12-8, 3-2) at bay until the final inning, when they scored once and got the tying run to the plate. Wesel struck out six and allowed 10 hits, but West only could push across runs in two innings.

The visitors took a 1-0 lead in the third when Dani Morgan (2 for 4) singled to right, stole second base and came home on a single to right by Amanda Ruskowsky (2 for 4).

But Wesel coaxed a grounder to first to get out of a two-out, bases-loaded jam.

Central, which didn’t make any errors, evened things up in the bottom of that frame when Courtney Kinney hit a solo home run to left off Warriors starter and losing pitcher Ruskowsky (eight-hitter, four strikeouts).

“I’m very happy,” Wesel

said. “I missed my spots a couple of times, but thankfully my defense was there to back me up. In the third, I just tried to stay focused and not worry about the runners or what was going on around me. Each of our pitchers has different pitches. So if one pitch isn’t working for me, others have something that’s working for them.

“We’re a very close team and we bond very well, and we mesh on and off the field, so that helps. It’s nice to beat our crosstown rivals.”

In West’s seventh, Morgan led off with a triple to right and came home when Ruskowsky grounded out for the second out. Emily Ray (3 for 4) followed with a single to right, and Rachel Andrade added a single to left before Wesel finally wrapped things up.

“The bottom line is we need more some more consistency up and down our lineup and out in the field,” Warriors coach Heather Novak said. “We need to do a better job of making plays defensively. But give Central credit, since they definitely made the plays.”

ROMEOVILLE – The Lewis men’s volleyball team not only has the best set of pin hitters in the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, it arguably has the best trio in the country.

Senior outside hitters Geoff Powell and Greg Petty combine with senior right side Eric Fitterer to make one of the most lethal front rows.

Not surprisingly, the three have been named to the MIVA first team because of their seasons.

“It’s great to see so many guys recognized from our team,” Fitterer said. “It shows that it’s not individuals. It’s a whole team effort. If our team doesn’t perform well, individuals do not get recognized.”

Since the hitters are strong at both pins, it is harder for teams to defend against Lewis (25-2, 15-1). Setter Scot Fifer can set the ball in either direction in any situation because Petty, Powell and Fitterer are so dominant.

Petty leads all Flyers with 294 kills, while he also boasts 36 aces, 108 digs and 64 blocks.

Powell has tallied 286 kills, 146 digs, 25 aces and 78 blocks.

And Fitterer has a team-high 38 aces, while adding 223 kills, 99 digs and 78 blocks.

While all three have served up some impressive season statistics in their senior year, not all of their futures were set at Lewis while they were in high school. Only one had been on the Flyers’ radar for a while. Fate brought the other two.

“I already knew about Greg,” Flyers coach Dan Friend said. “We had been tracking him for a while, and he was pretty easy to pick. He was a youth national team guy.

“With Geoff, we saw him and said, ‘Hey, there’s an athletic guy.’ He was playing right side at the time for Riptides. I went out to Anaheim and found out that he wasn’t committed yet, and we had a spot open, and we went after him. It worked out.

“Fitt[erer] was way under the radar. Nobody had seen

“Things kind of seemed to happen, and everything worked together with all three of these guys. There is a different story for each guy, but one thing in common – it’s their work ethic and what they bring to the table. It’s shined through.”

Once the three got to Lewis, their work ethics helped them improve by leaps and bounds.

In 2012, Powell was the MIVA Freshman of the Year and was named to the MIVA and NCAA All-Tournament team. The following year, he was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America second team, Volleyball Magazine first team and MIVA first team and MIVA all-tournament team.

In 2014, he repeated his MIVA honors and was named to the AVCA All-America first team.

Even with the long list of

the individual honors over the past four year, Powell always has found areas he wanted to improve.

“I came in as a right side my freshman year,” Powell said. “I switched positions and became an outside that year. I worked on my passing because that was my weakness point. All of my five years of fixing my weaknesses has helped me become the player that I am.”

Powell improved on both and became one of the most well-rounded outsides in men’s volleyball.

Another one of those well-rounded players is Petty.

The outside has been a standout player since high school.

When he had to decide what college he wanted to go to, it was easy. He followed his brother.

“I have to attribute a lot of success to my brother, Jay,” Petty said. “I’ve followed in his footsteps, and he got me started with volleyball. We’ve

always been competitive with whatever we’ve done. We always pushed each other to get better.”

Once he got to Lewis, he stayed competitive with Jay but also pushed other teammates to compete and expected them to do the same for him.

“Our competitiveness as a whole group is what’s huge for us as a team,” Petty said.

“That makes everyone around us better.”

Being competitive even during practice, as Petty had said, leads to producing big during critical points in games. Fitterer was the player who did that most memorably for the Flyers.

The first time Lewis faced Loyola on March 9, Lewis battled with the Ramblers point for point in the fourth game.

Fitterer – who had a breakout year offensively and serving – went behind the line and ripped two of his six aces to win the game for the Flyers.

“When people start playing volleyball, this is what they’re dreaming of,” Fitterer said.

“Everyone is thinking about playing on the highest stage.

That’s what we’re working toward. Ever since our freshman year, we’ve been working to be at the top and this is one more part of it.”

“Lindenwood is a tough team. It’s playoffs. Everyone wants it just as bad. It’s going to be a good match. One loss, and you’re done. It’s win or die trying.”

Lewis faces Lindenwood at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Neil Carey Arena. If the Flyers win, they will advance to the MIVA championship game, but they’re taking it one step – or brick – at a time.

“We’ve been working all year saying, ‘Build one brick for the giant wall,’ ” Powell said. “Lindenwood is another one of those bricks. We’re more focused on that. Then we’ll look to the next match and the next match.”

Bellair, Quade lead Lockport past West

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – The game within the big game Monday afternoon at Ed Flink Field was Joliet West baseball ace left-hander Robert Talarico against Lockport ace righthander Cole Bellair.

Or, you might label it a battle between quality leadoff men, the Tigers’ Cody Grosse and the Porters’ Jeremy Quade.

The University of Illinois-bound Bellair pitched a complete-game five-hitter while striking out 12 and walking one – and Quade had three hits, reached base four times and scored three runs – as Lockport (12-5-1, 5-0) won the opening game of a key SouthWest Suburban Blue series, 4-2.

Game 2 is on tap Wednesday afternoon at West (13-4, 4-1).

“When Cole locates his fastball and then throws his curve and slider, he’s tough,” Lockport coach Andy Satunas said

of Bellair. “He was groomed for this type of situation last year as a junior, when he pitched in a lot of big games.

“Jeremy has grown into a nice leadoff man. It started for him when we played Minooka a week and a half ago, and he’s been playing well since.”

West coach John Karczewski noted, “Quade was on base all day and scored three times.

He’s like our guy [Grosse] at the top. When you have guys who set the table like that, you have some success.”

“I’m sticking with our approach,” Quade said. “We are very detail oriented in what we do. I listen to everything Coach Satunas says, and it’s been working. It’s a process, and if we stick with it, it will pay off.”

Talarico worked 52⁄3 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits, three walks, two hit batsmen and two balks. Grosse singled, stole second and scored in the first and third innings, having to escape a rundown

“We said before the game that Robert [Talarico] and Cody [Grosse] are two great players, and we can’t let them beat us,” Satunas said.

“That leadoff hitter of theirs got what he could,” Bellair said of Grosse. “He’s pretty good at the plate and on the

bases.”

After Grosse opened the game with an infield single and stole second, Blake Tomac knocked him in with a twoout single. Lockport evened the scored in the bottom of the first as Quade roped a triple to deep center field and scored on Tyler Hair’s groundout.

Grosse singled again in the third, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Then on the throw to first on a dropped third strike, he got too far off third and was caught in a rundown. But he somehow escaped and scored to give West a 2-1 lead.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the fifth, when the Porters plated two runs to take the lead for good. Quade and Tyler Nassar had hits, and Tyler Hair received an intentional walk to load the bases.

A passed ball tied the game, and Anthony Cocco was hit by a pitch for the second time to drive in the go-ahead run.

“I was very proud of the

way our kids stepped up in a big conference game against a rival like Joliet West,” Satunas said. “I like the way we stuck with our plan.”

The Porters added another run in the sixth on a twoout error that scored Quade.

He had reached on a fielder’s choice on what could have been his fourth hit. But West right fielder Mike Rinck forced a runner at second after he trapped Quade’s sinking line drive. Nassar had his second hit in that inning, and Gavin Lovesky also had two hits for Lockport, including a double.

“We had the opportunity to make plays, and we didn’t do it,” Karczewski said. “Against a good team like this, you have to make the plays. We have to regroup and get some positive things happening Wednesday.”

“This is a tough conference, and we know the guys [Tigers] are a tough team,” Quade said.

“I expect to see a better effort from them Wednesday.”

Trading up for Mariota carries big risk

By ADAM JAHNS ajahns@suntimes.com The Bears like Oregon’s Marcus Mariota, but the sacrifices of moving up to select a quarterback in the first round rarely are worth the cost.

It’s a fact of life in the NFL that should scare off first-year general manager Ryan Pace, among other reasons.

Since 2000, there have been 14 teams that Marcus have traded up to draft a Mariota quarterback in the first round. And there are only two Super Bowl winners – Eli Manning and Joe Flacco – among them.

The best quarterbacks drafted as a result of those trades include Michael Vick (Atlanta Falcons, 2001), Manning (New York Giants, 2004), Jay Cutler (Denver

Broncos, 2006) and Flacco (Baltimore Ravens, 2008).

The misses vastly outweigh the hits, and it’s a stunningly bad list: Kyle Boller (Ravens, 2003), J.P. Losman (Buffalo Bills, 2004), Jason Campbell (Washington Redskins, 2005), Brady Quinn (Cleveland Browns, 2007), Mark Sanchez (New York Jets, 2009), Josh Freeman (Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 2009), Tim Tebow (Denver Broncos, 2010), Blaine Gabbert (Jacksonville Jaguars, 2011), Robert Griffin III (Redskins, 2012) and Johnny Manziel (Browns, 2014).

Bears coach John Fox was part of the Broncos regime that traded second-, third- and fourth-round picks to the Baltimore Ravens to move up and select Tebow at No. 25.

Florida State quarterback Jamies Winston still is widely projected to be selected first overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That leaves Mariota at No.

2 for the Tennessee Titans.

If teams want the second overall pick to take Mariota, ESPN front-office analyst Bill Polian, the former general manager of the Indianapolis Colts, said there’s already a price set for it.

Three years ago, the Redskins gave up three first-round picks and a second-rounder to select Griffin. Washington only moved up from No. 6 to No. 2.

“It was in a very similar situation,” Polian said in a recent conference call.

“Marcus played in similar offensive systems and had similar levels of success, with Marcus having a little more than RG3. So why wouldn’t that be the benchmark? It’s easy to say we’ll go up in the draft, but what’s the price?

“Keep in the mind, with all this talk, which is great, that’s what the draft is all about. In many ways, it’s fantasyland.

Everybody has their own needs, desire and deals that they want to cook up.”

ROMEOVILLE – Carolyn Nojiri and Carly Jaworski both recorded walk-off hits to help Lewis University’s softball team rally for a 3-2 (nine innings) and 7-5 (11 innings) Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep over Drury in the regular-season finale Monday at Lewis.

Trailing, 2-0, at the bottom of the seventh in Game 1, both Nojiri (3 for 5, 2 RBIs) and Jaworski (2 for 4, RBI) hit two-out RBI singles to send the game into extra innings. Brittany Russell (2 for 4), who reached on a double, scored off a Nojiri single to center field.

In Game 2, Lewis again was down in the seventh inning until Kelsey Ullrich (2 for 4, run, RBI) hit a twoout solo home run to even the score at five and send the game to extra innings again. In the 11th, Jaworski (2 for 5, two RBIs, run) hit a two-run walk-off homer.

Kelly Bowler went the distance to earn the complete-game victory in the opener. She scattered two runs and eight hits while fanning 10. Bowler (16-12)

came on in relief in the nightcap. Bowler tossed four innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits and fanning six. With the sweep, Lewis (25-20, 15-13) clinches a berth in the upcoming GLVC Tournament on Friday in East Peoria.

Bucks stay alive again, out-play Bulls Carter-Williams answered by banking in a shot, and John Henson flew in for a putback dunk off a miss by Mayo to make it 90-83 with 3:15 left.

Gasol hit two free throws after getting knocked to the court with 1:04 left to pull the Bulls within 92-88. But Antetokounmpo blocked a runner by Rose, and Middleton hit two free throws to make it a six-point game with 27.3 seconds left.

The Bucks led, 52-49, at halftime, with Middleton scoring 15 points and Carter-Williams outplaying Rose with 14 points and six assists.

The Bulls missed their first eight shots and fell into an early 9-0 hole before going on a 21-4 run. Taj Gibson finished it with consecutive baskets inside, including a three-point play, to make it 21-13 with 1:42 remaining.

But Milwaukee ended the quarter on a 10-1 run, with Middleton hitting a 3 after a turnover by Rose and a layup after stripping Gasol to put the Bucks ahead, 23-22.

By ANDREW SELIGMAN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Michael Carter-Williams had 22 points and eight assists, Khris Middleton scored 21 points, and the Milwaukee Bucks avoided elimination again with a 94-88 victory over the Bulls on Monday night in Game 5 of their firstround playoff series.

With a 3-2 lead, the Bulls will try to close it out again Thursday at Milwaukee.

But the Bucks aren’t going quietly after dropping the first three games.

They took Game 4 on a last-second layup by Jerryd Bayless and withstood several pushes by the Bulls in the fourth quarter of this one.

The Bucks regrouped after a ninepoint lead dwindled to three, and they hung on again after a seven-point lead shrank to four with just more than a minute remaining.

Carter-Williams hit 10 of 15 shots while outplaying Derrick Rose. The Bucks’ guard rolled his right ankle early in the third but came back late in the quarter.

Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 11 points and reserve O.J. Mayo added 10 as the Bucks kept the Bulls off balance most of the game.

Pau Gasol had 25 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulls, but Rose and Jimmy Butler struggled.

Rose was 5 of 20 from the field and missed all seven 3-point attempts. He committed six of his team’s 13 turnovers.

Butler scored 20 points but shot 5 of 21.

Sox’s game vs. Orioles postponed amid riots The ASSOCIATED PRESS BALTIMORE – The Baltimore Orioles’ home game against the White Sox was postponed Monday night because of safety concerns after riots broke out near Camden Yards after the funeral of Freddie Gray.

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred, at the stadium for a previously planned visit, said Tuesday night’s game between the Orioles and Sox could be moved – possibly to Nationals Park in Washington – if safety continued to be an issue.

Rioters looted stores and threw rocks and bricks at Baltimore police about three miles from the stadium in the wake of the mysterious death of Gray.

a severe spinal injury in police custody.

The Orioles announced the postponement about 40 minutes before game time. About 1,000 fans were inside the stadium at the time, and many gates already had been closed.

The team said the game was called off after consultation with police. The Sox were in Baltimore for the start of a three-game series.

Bryant, Hammel, Cubs top Pirates; fan hurt by bat

CHICAGO – Kris Bryant drove in two runs, Jason Hammel threw eight scoreless innings, and the Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 4-0, on Monday night.

Bryant got two hits, including a two-run single, as the

The prized rookie has nine RBIs in 10 games since being called up from the minors.

Hammel (2-1) gave up four hits, walked none and struck out seven.

Cubs rookie Addison Russell got a hit and scored a run in his Wrigley Field debut.

Russell lost control of his bat in the seventh inning, and it flew into the stands, injuring a fan. Cubs owner Tom Ricketts was seated near the fan, asked a team trainer for ice and a towel and assisted until paramedics arrived.

The fan was carried from the stands on a stretcher. There was no immediate report on the fan’s condition.

‘It’s almost like she’s a food terrorist’ Food Babe blogger Vani Hari is taking heat over health science

By LEANNE ITALIE The Associated Press NEW YORK – As truth wars go, Vani Hari of the Food Babe blog has produced a doozy.

The former management consultant turned healthy-living activist has a best-selling book and an army of supporters. And with the help of her fans, she’s led numerous successful online petitions to persuade food industry giants to rid their products of ingredients she deems unacceptable.

What Hari doesn’t have, critics argue, is a background in related sciences or nutrition. And since starting her Food Babe blog in 2011, she’s made mistakes that have landed her in a feeding frenzy.

“I think she means well, but I wish she would pick more important issues and pay closer attention to the science,” said Marion Nestle, a nutrition, food studies and public health professor at New York University.

Hari certainly isn’t the first food activist without a science background.

So why has she become the food revolution figure that so many love to hate?

“Because we’re winning,” Hari said in a recent interview, citing numerous commitments by companies to provide more “clean” and “simple” ingredients, often in response to her campaigns.

The answer from Dr. Steven Novella, a clinical neurologist and assistant professor at Yale University’s school of medicine, is more complicated. The working skeptic – he has a podcast and blogs – is one of Hari’s most vocal foes.

“It’s almost like she’s a food terrorist,” he said. “She will target some benign ingredient that has a scary sounding name. Her criteria is if she can’t pronounce it, then it’s scary.”

You bet, said Hari, who thinks a host of chemicals and additives used in the U.S. have no business being consumed, and notes that many are not allowed or are strictly limited in Europe and elsewhere.

The heat for Hari, who grew up on processed food, is fairly recent as her presence has grown. She gets nearly 5 million blog readers a month. She also gets death threats. And she’s banned so many people from her streams that they now have their own page on Facebook.

“I really do believe the attacks on me and this movement is a distrac-

School Heath Occupation Students of America Club recently completed their Pasta for Pennies fundraiser, collecting more than $1,000. Ms. Karr’s advisory class took the lead, collecting $165.87.

The advisory class was the winner of the Olive Garden pasta lunch.

The premise of the Pennies Program is simple: Students donated their spare change; and at the end of each week, the coin counting committee totaled the amounts. The classroom that collected the most money earned a free Olive Garden lunch delivered for their class.

There were several advisories (Kristin Chally, Cathryn Kaczmarski, Bernadette Karr, Allison Kutzki, Amy Malizia and Mary Spata) that were entered into the raffle for the hot wings lunch after the first week for collecting at least $1 a student.

The winner was Kaczmarski’s advisory.

HOSA has collected an additional $1,000 to donate this year to fight leukemia, bringing the total to more than $2,000.

Pet therapy dog helps Mokena girl with prosthetic leg reclaim mobility The HERALD-NEWS NEW LENOX – When Mokena residents Kurt and Gia Rodrigues learned their 8-year-old daughter, Bella, went into cardiac arrest, they were speechless – because days prior, she was her normal active self.

Earlier that week, Bella was having cold symptoms, which worsened into a severe H1N1 flu virus, causing her heart and other organs to fail. During the next 26 days, oxygen was delivered to her blood through the use of the life-saving Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation machine.

As the ECMO device allowed her to rest while her

affected organs healed, she was listed as a Status 1 for a heart transplant. Fortunately, with the use of a stress dose steroid, her heart improved moving her to a Status 7 for a heart transplant.

However, the aggressive infection didn’t allow her right leg to regain circulation, forcing doctors to remove the limb from below the right knee to the foot. As she faced the challenge of learning to walk again with a prosthetic leg, her progress improved as her spirits were lifted when she began receiving physical therapy using a pet therapy dog at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago at Silver Cross Hospital.

JOLIET – Joliet Catholic Academy students, faculty and staff recently dared to get their heads shaved in an effort to raise funds for childhood cancer research, participating in the student council organized St. Baldrick’s fundraiser.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation sponsors the world’s largest volunteer-driven fundraising event for childhood cancer research.

The JCA team set a fundraising goal of $15,000. They not only conquered the goal, they far surpassed it, raising $26,861.

Psychotherapy is a key part of treatment. But this treatment itself can present challenges because people with BPD tend either to idealize the therapist or become easily frustrated with them. As a result, it may be difficult for them to sustain a relationship with a therapist.

Also, people with BPD may understand interpersonal problems or coping strategies on an intellectual level, but they may still be unable to successfully manage intense emotions.

Another approach helps people with BPD to look at issues from different points of view. It then encourages them to use what they learn to better manage their own feelings and behaviors.

Medication is another treatment option. No single drug clearly helps treat BPD; instead, medication is usually used to treat symptoms as they emerge.

A person with BPD may also need or benefit from extra support. This may include a day-treatment program, live-in treatment, or group, couples or family therapy.

Most people experience at least some improvement in symptoms with treatment.

Significant numbers even recover from the disorder. That means they no longer meet the criteria for having BPD, and they function well.

Dear Doctor K: My daughter is in her 20s. She had a hard time during her teenage years and was recently diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Can you tell me what this is?

Dear Reader: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a mental health condition that involves poor self-image, a feeling of emptiness and great difficulty being alone. BPD is surprisingly common: About 6 percent of the U.S. population suffers from it at some point in their lifetime.

People with BPD have intense moods and unstable relationships. They can be impulsive and have unsafe sex, drive dangerously, eat too much, drink too much and squander money.

Unfortunately, people with BPD are more likely than others to harm themselves. In fact, they are more likely than average to attempt or commit suicide.

We really don’t understand what causes BPD. Most doctors think that it, as with many psychiatric illnesses, is a combination of genes and life experience. A person is born with a genetic vulnerability to develop the condition if he or she has certain life experiences. In particular, many teens and adults with BPD have experienced some form of abuse in childhood, including verbal, physical or sexual abuse, as well as being separated from one or both parents.

A doctor will diagnose BPD when a person has had many of the following symptoms. The symptoms must be severe and be present for a long time: • Unstable, intense and difficult relationships; • Poor self-image; • Self-destructive, impulsive behavior; • Suicidal threats or attempts; • Self-mutilation; • Extreme mood reactions, including intense, inappropriate anger; • Feeling empty or

When I try to make plans to bring them their gifts, they say they have errands to run and they’ll let me know when they’re home.

Then they wait until the next day to tell me they forgot, or they were out longer than expected.

We have no idea what’s going on in each other’s lives past the point of social media, which has shown me they’re minutes from my house at least once or twice a week. I understand life is busy, but it feels like they’re purposely avoiding me at this point.

Most of the gifts are personalized and can’t be returned or repurposed. But for those that aren’t, at what point is it OK to give up trying to deliver them and return them to the seller? –

Dear Abby: I have been married twice. My first marriage lasted 20 years, the second one about four years.

During my first marriage, I started cheating seven months after our wedding.

My wife knew about some of the affairs and stuck with me anyway. I finally felt so guilty for hurting her emotionally, I called it quits and married the last woman I cheated on her with.

My second marriage was in many ways better. I was able to remain faithful for more than three years before cheating again. I feel terrible that I have hurt another woman I loved, but I have now fallen in love with the woman I’m cheating with.

It’s like I’m in a perpetual cycle and don’t know how to stop. I want this relationship to be my last one. I want to remain faithful and committed, but I’m scared to death I’ll end up cheating on her and let us both down.

I’m not proud of how I treated my exes, but I can’t change the past. How do I change this pattern of behavior so I can be a faithful and devoted partner? – Cheater
