JOLIET – A Joliet woman is $4 million richer this week after winning the lottery.

Karen Dale of Joliet scratched the winning Illinois Lottery 100X The Cash ticket to find out she won the prize money, according to an Illinois Lottery news release.

“I can’t believe I won $4 million!” Dale said when presented her winning ticket at the Lottery Prize Center in Des Plaines, according to a Tuesday news release.

The winning ticket was bought some-

plans to use the $4 million to pay off bills, invest and perhaps treat herself to a new car.

The Joliet resident was in her car in the parking lot when she scratched the ticket and discovered her win, according to the news release.

Lambert said Dale is regular customer.

100X The Cash is a $20 instant ticket that offers more than $124 million in prizes, including eight top prizes of $4 million and 18 prizes of $100,000, according to Illinois Lottery.

Four of the $4 million and nine of the $100,000 prizes have not yet been claimed.

More than 52,000 clients affected by Will County Health Department program losses

JOLIET – More than 52,000 clients are estimated to be affected by the Will County Health Department’s decision to suspend a handful of programs, according to a department news release.

The department – faced with a $2.1 million shortfall caused by the state’s budget impasse – announced last week it was laying off 53 employees. The agency also is suspending nine programs, including its adult psychiatric services.

Those affected include 39,000 served by a school vision and hearing program, 1,800 behavioral health clients and 4,000 clients who use HIV prevention and education services, according to the news release.

A union representative for Will County Health Department employees slated for layoffs later this month said the loss of programming will have a ripple effect on the community’s “most vulnerable citizens.”

David Delrose, president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 1028, said while employees are aware of the Illinois budget crisis, the scope and immediacy of the layoffs were unexpected.

“It’s shock. It’s concern, and not even just concern for their own jobs and their families, but we have dedicated our careers to serving people that are some of our most vulnerable citizens in our community-based programs,” Delrose said. “[The potential for] great suffering and some

time last month at Lambert’s PS Fuels, 928 W. Jefferson St., Joliet. The gas station will get $40,000 – or 1 percent of the prize total – for selling the winning ticket, per Illinois Lottery rules.

Store owner Terry Lambert said Tuesday the establishment recently received its $40,000 check. Lambert said this was the most sizeable cash prize the store has received related to the Illinois Lottery.

“She sure lucked out. I’m happy for Karen. It’s certainly going to change her life,” Lambert said.

tragedies as well is weighing on the hearts and minds of employees.”

In total, 48 union employees and five managerial positions will be laid off May 27, and 13 positions will be frozen. Savings are estimated at just over $2 million.

The department’s outpatient mental health services are among those being suspended. Mental health patients discharged from area hospitals make up the majority of clients served by the program, along with Medicaid and Medicare recipients.

“If they don’t have a way to manage their illness, they are at risk of [mental health deterioration], having to go to the ER in a crisis situation,” Delrose said.

“And God forbid, even more tragic things like suicide, or being involved with the criminal justice system, which affects the courts and capacity at the Will County Jail.”’

In the department’s behavioral health division, adult psychiatric services, capitated care, crisis response, juvenile justice and psychiatric medications will be suspended. In family services, family case management, vision and hearing care, HIV prevention and tobacco control will be suspended.

man Services to, in part, pay for state-funded mental health programs. It would also allocate $233.2 million to the state’s Department of Revenue.

The hearing is set for noon Wednesday in Room C-600 at the Michael A. Bilandic Building at 160 N. LaSalle St. in Chicago.

“The Will County Health Department is just one public health agency in the grand scheme of things,” Olenek said in the news release. “The lack of a state budget has created monumental problems impacting every corner of the state and virtually everyone living here. For Will County, the budget impasse means thousands of people going without critical family health and behavioral health services.”

Department spokesman Vic Reato said the restoration could allow the department to avoid layoffs and continue six of the nine suspended programs.

The prospect of passage is unclear. Last week, lawmakers and Rauner approved a bipartisan stopgap appropriations bill to infuse emergency dollars into higher education institutions.

That leaves social services as one of the last remaining hostages in Springfield’s budget battle.

Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center is “prepared to deal with the potential impact of the pending Will County Health Department service reductions, and remains committed to providing care for the most vulnerable,” according to a statement from Lisa Lagger, a spokeswoman for the Joliet hospital.

Middle school students present ideas at Joliet expo

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Entrepreneurs at a business expo for middle schoolers on Tuesday pitched ideas that ranged from an app to make doctors’ rounds more efficient to candy that can calm you down.

The expo was the culminating event of the Entrepreneurship Club, a program that brings together local schools, businesses and universities to cultivate enterprising habits in students in grades six through eight.

The effect on the youngsters was obvious as they shook hands, handed out business cards and said such things as, “I heard that homemade is starting to trend.”

That was part of Abigail Phillips’ marketing for Puffles, simple stuffed animal toys made of socks and felt with bow tie accessories created from duct tape. Phillips is a seventh-grader at Troy Middle School.

There were 31 exhibits at the expo held at the University of St. Francis Sullivan Center. Students from 11 schools participated. The schools all provide the Entrepreneurship Club program for their students.

The club, now in its fifth year, was created by the Education Committee of the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry. Partners include Lewis University, University of St. Francis and Rasmussen College.

“We come together to foster the entrepreneurial spirit of our students,” said Larry Wiers, director of school partnerships at Lewis University and coordinator of the Entrepreneurship Club program.

“The kids are very creative,” Wiers said. “But it’s not just a game for them. This is an actual business that they establish at their age level.”

Alexis Aguirre, a seventh-grader at Hufford Junior High School, is very serious about his Vital App. “I’m trying to work on a patent for this,” Aguirre said after demonstrating the app, which would provide patient information to doctors making rounds at a hospital. The app not only could make doctors’ rounds more efficient, but it also could share information with patients’ families.

“They could see all the information that their doctor could see. They could see it on their phones,” Aguirre said.

results, said Alita Guerrero, who has run the program at Gompers Junior High School for five years.

Guerrero said she recently heard from an early student in the program who is now a high school senior and

taking tests that show he has some business acumen.

“He told me, ‘I don’t know if I’m going to go into business, but my tests tell me I’d be good at it,’ ” Guerrero said. “It’s starting to show up in test scores.”

The club does help students start thinking about how they can apply what they learn to the real world.

JJC board OKs interim president contract

Romeoville village manager recommends Mitchell as permanent president

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Junior College trustees approved the contract for the interim president, following their formal appointment of the new leader after the college’s previous president abruptly resigned.

The contract approved at Tuesday’s special meeting for interim President Judy Mitchell includes a 25 percent increase to her salary, amounting to roughly $187,000, because she still is performing some of the duties from her previous position on top of her new ones, said Robert Wunderlich, JJC board chairman.

The contract passed on a 7-0 vote.

Board Vice Chairman Andrew Mihelich was absent.

Mitchell thanked the trustees and said she is enjoying her work. She said she has been out in the community, meeting with faculty and staff and she has been well reJudy Mitchell ceived.

“Just to have this honor to serve in this position is more than you can imagine. So thank you,” Mitchell said.

After the vote on the contract, Wunderlich read a letter from Romeoville Village Manager Steve Gulden recommending Mitchell become the permanent president of JJC. “This letter is unsolicited. I’m not sure if she is being considered,” Wunderlich read from the letter. “However, I feel compelled to express my sentiments

Mitchell showed leadership, ability to work with others and consensus building, according to the letter Wunderlich read from Gulden.

At the April 19 board meeting, Wunderlich said there would be a presidential search and that a criteria and list of consultants for the initiative would be

put together. Mitchell had affirmed at that meeting she wanted to leave open the option of her being considered as permanent president of JJC. Mitchell’s appointment as interim president follows the abrupt resignation of the previous president, Debra Daniels, who had sent trustees a resignation notice in late March.

Trustees approved Daniels’ resignation and settlement agreement March 29 that will pay Daniels $196,270 for a year, including health benefits. The settlement acknowledged disputed claims between Daniels and the college.

Mitchell’s appointment also has led to a change in the administrative staff.

Jeff Heap, the college’s controller and financial services director, now is the interim administrative affairs vice president.

When asked what motivated her idea, Fowlie said, “I like Spanish. I pretty much went the Spanish route and said, let’s help people who can’t do this do it.”

Rich Cronholm, owner of Johansen & Anderson, a heating and cooling business in Joliet, is one of the business advisers who visits the club a few times a year to offer insights.

He said the students are curious about the business world.

“I don’t know where their questions come from,” Cronholm said.

“But at the last one I was at, they asked, ‘Have you ever fired someone?

What was it like to fire someone?’ ” Cronholm is the adviser at Laraway School, where sixth-grader Alexandria Nance developed the concept for Suasana, a stress-reducing candy named after the Indonesian word for atmosphere.

Nance said the Entrepreneurship Club “gives you something to think about and something to work toward.

It also gives us real-life experience.”

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A few people spoke out Monday on the future layout of roads and trails at Pilcher Park, but the Joliet Park District saved a decision on the plan for another day.

The plans for Pilcher Park have drawn the attention of disability advocates, naturalists and park neighbors with a mix of opinions on plans to change the road and trail system.

New park district Executive Director Tom Carstens said he wanted more time to study the issue.

“I’m doing my due diligence so I understand all the different options,” Carstens said after announcing at the Monday park board meeting that the decision would be pushed back to the May 23 meeting. “There’s a lot of passion. We take our residents’ concerns seriously.”

While Carstens just started his job April 13, he did attend a March 21 public hearing on the Pilcher Park plan along with more than 100 other people, many of whom spoke out for and against the trail and road plan.

Disability advocates have opposed the plan to reduce road access and have called for more accessible trails.

Naturalists have supported the park district plan to reduce road access.

Neighbors have been asking the district to clean up the park, among other things.

John DePue, a neighbor of Pilcher Park, said the park district took one step in the right direction.

“I just want to thank the district for

putting out all the trash cans,” DePue said, commenting on one improvement since the March 21 meeting. At that meeting, one of the speakers did say the park needed more garbage cans.

“It’s much appreciated,” DePue said, “although one has already been vandalized.”

Craig Purchase, a local pastor who lives near Pilcher Park, said the park district needs to put more money into the park.

“I’ve been living in the Pilcher area over 40 years now,” Purchase told the board. “I’ve moved there because of the park. I’ve seen the decline.”

The issue facing the board is whether to move ahead with a plan that includes converting an upper loop section of the road that circles the Nature Center into a trail; closing the flowing well road that comes off Gougar Road; and closing one section of trail that often gets washed out with flooding.

“We do support an accessible, clean, quiet trail instead of a road,” Rita Renwick, president of the Will County Chapter of the Illinois Audubon Society, told the board. “I feel it shouldn’t be an issue to pit people against each other.”

Pam Heavens, executive director of the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living, was at the meeting but didn’t speak publicly. She did say later that it was a good sign that the board was waiting another month before making a decision.

“It’s the wise thing to do to make sure it’s done the right way,” Heavens said.

Testimony ends in child-luring trial

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Testimony ended Tuesday in the bench trial of a Bolingbrook man charged with attempted child abduction.

Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak said she will issue a decision next week after reviewing evidence – including an interview the then-11-year-old girl gave to police on Feb. 17, 2012, when she encountered George D. George D. Smith while walking Smith home from school.

Smith, 69, was driving in the 100 block of Lexington Drive when he asked the girl if she wanted to get in

his pickup truck. Defense attorney Dave Schiffer said Smith was merely offering assistance because the girl was carrying two big bags. Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Frank Byers said there is evidence “a sexual motivation was at least part of his ... offering a ride.”

“When Mr. Smith took the stand, his version of events changed,” Byers said. “The longer he was on the stand, the more his version matched [the girl’s].”

Schiffer said Smith’s friendly action was scrutinized into felony charges because of previous political conflicts with local officials.

“He has [in the past] filed lawsuits ... for the separation of Bolingbrook into wards and the removal of a school board member,” Schiffer told

Bertani-Tomczak.

Earlier that day, Smith had driven to a local video store and rented two adult movies, including “Dirty Little Schoolgirls,” he testified last week.

The girl’s mother testified Tuesday her daughter drew a sketch of the man and his pickup truck while waiting for an officer to arrive that afternoon and drew a map of where she encountered him on her route home at the police station that night. Prosecutors said the girl’s map differs from the route Smith said he drove.

Arguably the oddest exchange of the trial was when Schiffer asked the mother about the map’s depiction of the foliage at the intersection that could’ve blocked the view.

“Isn’t that [the girl’s] favorite bush?” Schiffer asked.

“No, not really,” her mother replied.

“It doesn’t make sense that she would stand [at the intersection] not moving for three or four minutes like Mr. Smith said,” prosecutor Katie Rabenda told the judge.

“Why would he need a story? [He’s] trying to cover up.”

Police: 2 busted in heroin sales

Joliet Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad Director Mike Weber said police were informed about drug sales at an apartment in the 3700 block of Union Avenue in Steger and had been investigating for a week.

After obtaining a search warrant, MANS agents entered the apartment Armani A. about 6:30 a.m.

Armani A. Thomas, Thomas 28, and Mario D. Jones, 28, were arrested on two counts of delivery of drugs and booked into the Will County Jail.

“We recovered 250 grams of heroin, which is about 1,500 doses, as Mario D. well as 15 grams of co- Jones caine and approximately $3,000 during the search,” Weber said.

Ground breaks on Romeoville Blain’s Farm & Fleet

aschier@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Ground broke last week on the Blain’s Farm & Fleet that will anchor a new commercial development in Romeoville.

The business, which sells clothing, home improvement materials and farming supplies, is scheduled to open in October, Assistant Village Manager Dawn Caldwell said.

“We’re very excited,” Mayor John Noak said.

The 122,000-square-foot store is being constructed on a 29-acre site at the southeast corner of Airport and Weber roads. Its opening will bring more than 100 jobs to the village.

Blain’s also is developing seven accompanying retail outlots, although what will occupy those lots has yet to be announced, Noak said.

The Romeoville Village Board voted in December to annex the Blain’s site and approve an incentive agreement allowing Blain’s to collect a 50 percent sales tax reimbursement up to $4.91 million. If Blain’s were to develop one of the outlots as a table service or quick casual restaurant, it could get half the sales tax of that business as well, up to $100,000.

Noak said the Farm & Fleet will serve a niche customer base that now must travel outside Will County.

By fall 2017, the goal could be to have a 1-to-1 ratio of students to devices. Students in grades five to eight would be able to take their Chromebooks home with them at night, and eighth-graders would have the possibility of taking their Chromebooks with them when they graduate for a reduced buyout.

A technology fee of $50 is being considered to help implement the changes.

The district currently has no registration fees.

One option within the plan could be for some seventh- and eighth-graders to help repair the computers themselves, Henkle said, as “first level Dell technicians.”

“We’re going to take full ownership of these devices,” he said.

A few additional personnel would need to be added, should the board approve the plan next month, including a full-time position for a director of 21st-century learning; four building-level device and instruction tech support personnel; and three other technology personnel.

The schools would also create spaces to support the new styles of learning, such as more collaborative, communicative open spaces, rather than desks in rows.

The total costs of putting the program into place could be $537,901 in fiscal 2017; $426,113 in 2018; $287,759 in 2019; and $211,240 in 2020, with costs decreasing over time due to the initial investment in personnel and devices.

Also Monday, the board heard the 2015 tax rate for the district will be 2.7339, as compared with the 2014 tax rate, which was 2.822. The equalized assessed value is $626.8 million, with new property at $10.4 million.

CHANNAHON – Channahon School District 17 Superintendent Nick Henkle is asking the Board of Education to approve a four-year plan for the district’s four schools called “Vision 2020: A 21st Century Learning Plan.”

The plan was inspired by a statewide educators’ initiative begun by the Illinois Association of School Administrators in 2012 and released in full by a team of Illinois educators last year.

Henkle told members at Monday’s board meeting that the plan is designed to move students from being engaged in learning to being invested in it. It focuses on the changing needs of education to better prepare students for the skills they need for college and careers.

All of the district’s eighth-graders should graduate with proficiencies as communicators, creators, critical thinkers and collaborators, Henkle said.

“We want the best for our kids,” he said. “We want them to have the best

opportunities available.”

Much of the plan involves a new approach to learning by using cloud-based technology and a variety of technological tools, such as 3-D printing, green screen, robotics, kinetic machines and autodesk design.

“We’re looking at technology as a core competency,” Henkle said.

Several schools have begun similar plans, he told the board, and some have had success. To design the plan to the district’s standards, Henkle and staff contacted school districts in different states and asked what worked and what didn’t.

Professional development on the front end was key, they learned.

In the district’s plan are dates and cost estimates for teacher and administrator symposiums, summits, institute days, community viewings, committees, site visits and trainings.

Also in the budget is about $420,000 for the designs for a new Metra station, Auchstetter said.

An additional $9.5 million is slated for the long-planned wastewater treatment plant No. 2 expansion, the total cost of which is estimated at $19 million.

The village is applying for a low-interest loan from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to cover the total cost, and will divide the project among this year’s and next year’s budgets.

Also included in the budget is about $1.8 million in road maintenance.

Mayor Tim Baldermann said that the village every year continues to make good on its promise to residents who approved its move toward home-rule status in 2008 to fix its aging roads.

“Not only are we able to continue to provide [essential] services to our residents, but also to do it extremely efficiently,” Baldermann said. “We are proud to be fiscally conservative.”

CHICAGO – The Regional Transportation Authority is issuing a Call for Projects for its Access to Transit Improvement Program, which provides capital funding for small-scale projects that increase pedestrian and bicycle access to transit, such as sidewalks, bus shelters, bike racks and pedestrian crossings.

The program is intended to leverage RTA and local funds with federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality program funding to help implement recommendations contained in Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning and RTA planning studies. Successful applications to the Access to Transit Improvement Program will be bundled together as one application to the CMAQ program.

NEW LENOX – The New Lenox Village Board has approved an operating budget with a $2 million surplus for the fiscal year starting May 1.

The 2016-17 budget estimates about $43 million in revenues and about $41 million in expenditures, and will continue to sustain the village’s goal of maintaining at least a three-month reserve in its general fund, Finance Director Kim Auchstetter said during a public hearing at the board’s meeting Monday.

Last year, the board approved an operating budget with estimated revenues and expenses of $40.1 million and $37.4 million, respectively.

Possible changes in revenue expected from the state are not reflected in the new year’s budget, Auchstetter said. The village continues to discuss what changes might be needed if Gov. Bruce Rauner moves forward with his plan to cut in half local municipalities’ share of state income tax funds, she

said.

In that scenario, the village would amend the budget if needed, she said later.

The new budget includes some long-awaited projects. About $2.7 million is slated for a construction contract with P.T Ferro Construction and $383,844.11 is set for an engineering services contract with Christopher B. Burke Engineering Ltd. for the Nelson Road extension and realignment from West Haven Avenue to West Illinois Highway.

Both contracts were also approved by trustees Monday night. The bid from P.T. Ferro is almost $2 million less than the engineer’s estimate of $4.59 million.

The project, which will provide a new north-south route in town and alleviate heavy traffic in a nearby subdivision, has been delayed for years due to the village’s thwarted attempts to reach purchasing agreements with landowners.

She loved life and encouraged everyone to be the best that they could be. She loved to travel, especially boating with her family and friends.

Survived by her devoted family, husband, Lester (Rob) Anderson; daughter, Kara Anderson; 2 stepchildren, Jason Anderson and Jamie Porth; 2 grandchildren, Alexis and Emma; 5 sisters, Beth (Luthor) Pride, Dawn (Ken) Laczynski, Trudie Petersen, Lissa (Harry) Ross and Sylvia Rudolph Steffen; 3 brothers, Gerald (Kendra) Rutkiewicz, Gabe Rutkiewicz and Todd (Ginger) Link; and several nieces and nephews.

WILLIAM R. BOLTE JR. William R. Bolte Jr. “Mr. Bill,” age 74, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, April 23, 2016.

Bill is survived by his loving daughter, Julia (Jeannie) Bolte; dear brother, Ronald (Judith) Bolte; dear sister, Patricia (Donald) Vranich; dear nieces and nephews, Ronald Jr., Brian, Susan, Donald and Laura; and special friend, Bonnie Gerrettie.

Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Theresa Marie Bolte (nee Loeffler); loving son, Raymond Bolte; dear nephew, Jeff Bolte; and parents, William Sr. and Dorothy (nee Wetherholt) Bolte.

Bill was a member of Croatian Cultural Club, KSKJ St. Francis Lodge #29, Coal City Area Club, as well as numerous others. Bill was an avid fisherman and White Sox fan. He enjoyed a good game of euchre. His cats, Spotzie and

Calley, were very dear to his heart. Most of all, Bill loved his family.

Richard Peter Cornelius Jr. “RIP” “Corney,” age 76, a Plainfield resident, at rest Saturday, April 23, 2016, at Alden Estates of Shorewood.

Born May 12, 1939, in Crookston, MN, to Richard Peter Sr. and Mae (nee Last) Cornelius and raised by Louise Cornelius.

A U.S. Navy Vietnam veteran proudly serving his county from 1958-1964. Member of the American Legion Post #13, past commander and Woodruff Golf Thursday Night Golf League. A sports fanatic enjoying all sports, and he coached Plainfield Little League Baseball, 1976-1980.

Survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Mary Ann (nee Dillon) Cornelius; his two sons, Craig Cornelius (Margy Malak) and Jeffrey (Christine) Cornelius; four grandchildren, Dakota “Cody” Lorenz, Jeffrey Jr., Justin and Macy Cornelius; three brothers, Frank (Diana), Paul (Barbara), Cornelius, Dennis (Marlys) Ristau; one sister; Dorine (Russell) Berg; and uncle of many nieces and nephews.

MARIA J. DOLYNKA Maria J. Dolynka (nee Koren), age 81, entered into eternal life on Sunday, April 24, 2016, with her loving son, Frank, by her side.

Maria passed away peacefully at St Francis at St. Andrews place Nursing Home in Eureka, MO, where she resided for a very short period of time. Maria previously prospered for 15 years at her lakeside cottage at the Cape Albeon Retirement Community in Valley Park, MO. Maria resided in the Joliet area beginning

in 1961 where she was an active member and supporter of the Catholic and Slovenian communities in the Joliet area including the Slovenian Cultural Home in Lemont. Maria was a retired cosmetologist and active artist in her retirement.

Maria is survived by her loving son, Frank J. Dolynka; sisters, Anica, Evanca; and brother, Frank, who all reside in Slovenia or Croatia; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins in those countries. Also, she is survived by relatives, Stefie, Vera, John and Mike Kochan and their family in the San Francisco area.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Dolynka; sister, Barbica; and parents, Alojz and Barbara (nee Zibret) Koren.

He served the Lord as a member of St. John Lutheran Church. He was the best grandpa, and an avid golfer and Cubs fan.

Born: June 2, 1934; in Springfield Died: April 24, 2016; in Joliet Robert A. Elmore, age 81, late of the Timbers of Shorewood, and formerly of Brookfield, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 24, 2016, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center, Joliet.

Born June 2, 1934, in Springfield, he was the son of the late Athol and Emma (Lester) Elmore. He served with the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959, and worked as a computer analyst for the Railroad Retirement Board, retiring with 37 years of service. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Bob was a devoted husband, a wonderful father and a dear grandfather and great-grandfather. He was very proud of his family.

Surviving are his children, Robert (Joy) Elmore of Plainfield, Jennifer (Jeff) Bendy of New Lenox, Michael (Anita) Elmore of Clarksville, TN, and John Elmore of Minneapolis, MN; 16 grandchildren, Jennifer, Lauren, Michael, Jeremy, Kristen, Kara, Sara, Matthew, Joseph, Jacob, Anthony, Rachael, Mark, Carmen, Mitchell and Joshua; six great-grandchildren, Logan, Maddox, Noah, Kaylen, Madison and McKinley; three sisters, Patsy (the late Daniel) Lind, Peggy (the late Fred) Steele, and Connie (Russell) Mack; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Philip D. Graham, 84, of Joliet, formerly of Canton, passed away, on April 23, 2016, at Joliet Area Community Hospice.

Phil was born to Ray and Addie Smith Graham from Ipava on Sept. 22, 1931. He graduated with the class of 1949 in Canton. Phil married Patricia A. Wilcoxen from Lewistown on June 9, 1956.

Phil is survived by his wife, Patricia; sisters, Norma (Maurice) Russell and Wilma (late Ray Sr.) Widger, both of Canton. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Lawrence, William, Robert and Doke.

Phil was employed with the city of Joliet Engineering Department, retiring in 1989 after 30 years. Phil loved watching his “Cubbies” and was a member of Ducks Unlimited. He loved hunting and fishing and spending time with his family.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 27, 2016, at 12 p.m. at the Sedgwick Funeral Homes & Crematory in Canton, where visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. The Rev. Kevin VanTine will officiate. Cremation rites will be accorded after the services.

OBITUARIES DOROTHY JEAN KIERNAN Born: Oct. 31, 1942 Died: April 23, 2016

Born: July 19, 1947 Died: April 22, 2016

Benjamin F. Kincheloe, 68, of Wilmington, passed away on Friday, April 22, 2016, at the Hospice House in Joliet with his loving wife at his side.

Mr. Kincheloe was born on July 19, 1947, in Evansville, Indiana, to Gladys and Olma Kincheloe. He attended schools in the Evansville area. After graduation Ben enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving one tour of duty in Vietnam.

Ben’s last military assignment was at the U.S. Army Ammunition Plant (the Arsenal) in Joliet.

He left the Army after serving from February 1967 until February 1973. He then worked at Ecolab in Joliet for over 30 years, retiring in 2007.

Mr. Kincheloe married Crystal Adams in 1973. She died in 1983. In 1985, he married Annette King, who survives.

His parents; and one brother, Ronald of Evansville, are deceased.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are stepson, Douglas Davis; and stepdaughter, Brenda (Arland) Pearcy; and stepgranddaughter, Ramona Davis (Ben’s “Sunshine”), all of Wilmington. He is also survived by two brothersin-law, David (Judy) King of Gilbert, Arizona, and Dennis (Barbara) King of Braidwood; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ben was active in the Wilmington Island Square Dance Club, serving as president in 1992. He was also an active member of the Wilmington Masonic Lodge No. 208, where he served as worshipful master in 1996. He also enjoyed his motorcycle and rode with a group of Wilmington cycle enthusiasts. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Wilmington.

Mr. Kincheloe’s body was gifted to Science Care of Pennsylvania, for medical research.

His remains will be buried at the Abraham Lincoln Memorial Cemetery at a later date.

CLARICE KOFOID Clarice “Claire” Kofoid, died on Saturday, April 23, 2016, after a brief illness that neither diminished her laughter, nor her love of life and chocolate.

Clarice was a lifelong resident of Joliet, born to Tony and Rosella Ferro in 1948, joining big sister and best friend Carolyn (Ferro). In 1975, she married Karl Kofoid, the love of her life, becoming stepmom to Laura (David Ricci), Andy (Monique Kofoid) and Doug (Marie Geanuleas), whom she loved and lectured as her own, and treasured her sister-in-law Mary Lou (Ward Theilman). The family grew with the birth of her daughter Tavia (Scott Westbrook),

Martha G. Llewellyn (nee Gedye), age 68, of Joliet, and formerly Jacksonville, passed away Monday, April 25, 2016, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

She was born April 30, 1947, to the late Elmeta (nee Donovan) and Eugene Gedye in LaSalle, where she was raised and educated, a graduate with the class of 1965 from LaSalle-Peru High School. Martha also attended Mid State Business College in Peoria. It was during this time that she began corresponding with her future husband of 48 years, the Rev. Clark Llewellyn who was in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Key West, FL. In addition to her husband, she is also survived by two sons, Aaron Llewellyn (fiancee Hattie Doyle) and Benjamin (Maria Rees) Llewellyn, both of Jacksonville; five grandchildren, Anna Kersey, James Rhys, Isabella Grace “Scooter,” Eden Vey and Elliott Rae; one brother, William (Lori) Gedye of Marion, Ohio; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Phyllis Gabriel; and one brother, Tommy Gedye.

Martha was employed for numerous years at Passavant Hospital in Jacksonville. She was a faithful witness to her Lord and obedient in the use of her spiritual gifts. A faithful student of the Word (having memorized the Book of James).

Dorothy Jean Kiernan (nee Rousonelos), age 73, of Joliet, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 23, 2016, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born Oct. 31, 1942, in Joliet, she was a lifelong resident. Dorothy was an amazing mother who loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, and lived life to its fullest.

For 30 years, Dorothy and her husband owned and operated Sonny’s Delite. She happily greeted all her customers with her beautiful smile.

She was an avid bingo player, where throughout the years she has made wonderful friends. Dorothy loved watching Sunday afternoon football in her Patriots jersey.

Claire was a wizard in the kitchen and a goddess with a glue gun. She adored celebrations, holidays, parties, get-togethers, card games, backyard bashes, shindigs, intimate dinners, evenings out, evenings in, pre-parties, after-parties and any excuse to be with friends and family. Attending one of her soirees, you could be assured that you would eat too much, drink too much, laugh too much and stay out way past your bedtime. If you were invited over (or just happened to be driving by) during Halloween or Christmas, her two favorite holidays, you might marvel at both the decorations filling every square inch ... and the infinite patience and good nature of her beloved husband Karl.

For over 30 years, Claire shared her passion for cooking and entertaining to legions of students from Hufford Junior High and Joliet West as a Foods and Nutrition teacher. She was an inspiration in the classroom, imparting recipes and tips and tricks for cooking everything from meal basics to sumptuous desserts and enabling her students to cater important school events.

For Clarice, there was no “retire” in retirement. Rather, retirement was simply more time to do more and spend more time with those she loved. From substitute teaching to helping friends with whatever they needed whenever they asked (or didn’t) to near constant volunteering, Claire’s life was full. She did not, however, waste one precious minute organizing much of anything, so kitchen cabinets were opened carefully and with caution warnings. Summer months were spent with Karl on their boat, cruising Lake Michigan and moving the aforementioned get-togethers to the water. Her favorite summer party was always on July 3 surrounded by friends and family in Monroe Harbor with fireworks booming overhead and the 1812 Overture playing in the background. “We are so lucky.

This is the best year ever!” she would exclaim every single year.

Claire took great joy in being “Nammy” to her grandkids, Claire and Lucy Westbrook, Sophie, Julien and Michael Kofoid, Simon and CJ Ricci, and Jack Kofoid ... and her granddog Scout.

Sleepovers, excursions, craft projects, favorite meals, dessert-before-AND-after-dinner, and Christmas with so-many-presents-you-can’tcount made “Nammy” or Grandma Claire one special grandma.

In life, Clarice’s motto was, “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.” Her friends and family find that hard to imagine. The fun in heaven is just beginning.

James L. Music passed away at his home, Monday, April 25, 2016, at age 74. He bravely battled prostate cancer for 13 years.

Survived by his daughter, Jenny (Jeff) Music-Slattery; three grandsons, Jack, Ryan and Brenden Slattery. He had many close friends, namely Carolyn Kirchoff, Kathy LaFever and Jay Garrett. Jim was born July 7, 1941, in Joliet. Graduate of Joliet Township High School class of 1959. Jim retired from Modern Drop Forge in Blue Island after 25 years. He was a speaker and coordinator for UsTOO International Prostate Cancer Education & Support Network in Lombard for the past 13 years. He spent countless hours counseling men with prostate cancer and giving them support and treatment options.

Ida was born May 31, 1928, in Joliet, to Richard and Amanda (nee Kettwig) Wilda, and was a graduate of Providence High School. She worked in various offices for many years and spent 23 years with Jewel Home Shopping Service in Barrington.

Ida was a loving wife, a devoted mother and a caring grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was an avid reader.

Mike was born on July 23, 1958, in Joliet. He graduated in 1976 from Plainfield High School and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served on the USS North Carolina as a Navy Nuke for eight years. He was stationed and served his country during the Iran Hostage Crisis. Being in the Navy gave him the opportunity to experience many other countries and cultures.

Mike moved to Texas after he was honorably discharged from the Navy and was hired at STPNOC as a nuclear chemical operator, where he was later promoted to head operator and was also a fire brigade leader. Mike then met and married Terri Lostracco on July 29, 1989, in Bay City, where they began their life and family.

Mike’s love of rollercoasters was often the central focus of many family vacations. He was

In late 2009, he left Goose Island to assist in opening Revolution Brewing, where he was recently the director of retail operations.

Greg was an integral part of the small-business and craft beer communities. He treasured the friendships and relationships that he formed at both breweries and was fondly known as “Uncle Greg” by his Revolution family. He was loved by all that knew him and to say that he will be missed is an understatement.

Greg will be remembered for his quick wit, kind and generous spirit, and the mischievous twinkle in his eye.

Voters should decide opponents’ exits not leading candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump had blowout victories in New York this week. Understandably, each exulted in their triumph.

Clinton said, “The race for nomination is in the home stretch, and victory is in sight.”

Donald Trump stated that Ted Cruz is “just about mathematically eliminated.”

Not so fast, folks. The public does not believe this race is over. And I know the states yet to decide (Pennsylvania, North Dakota, Maryland, West Virginia, Connecticut and California among them) do not relish the idea that they are an afterthought.

Republicans, Democrats and Independents are pretty much as one in believing that these two contests are benefiting the voters. Exit polls show 68 percent of Democrats feel the race has energized their party, while fewer Republicans say the same. All feel it’s the voters who should decide, not candidates calling for their opponents’ exits.

Millions of Bernie Sanders, Cruz and John Kasich supporters want the contest to be a photo finish at the convention wire. Their supporters will rightfully feel cheated if Trump or Clinton forces their candidate out of the race, truncating their fair chance to contest the nomination.

No one should begrudge Clinton or Trump playing the “sense of inevitability” card that they’re going to get the nomination. That’s standard campaign

VIEWS Donna Brazile technique. After all, if you can convince the public the race is over, it falls to the opponent to waste energy to convince voters otherwise.

Except that this year, not only does the arithmetic prove both Trump and Clinton still fall short of the nomination, but the public clearly wants the testing for the world’s most powerful office to continue until the last vote is cast and counted.

Let’s be plain: Clinton and Trump are very close to reaching the important numbers. But it’s the voters’ right to decide if they want to put Trump or Clinton over the top, or boost their opponents and create a “let’s-see-theirpersuasion-skills” open convention fight. And as a Democratic official with the title of “superdelegate,” I prefer to see voters in the District of Columbia cast their ballots before tossing my vote in one corner or another.

CBS Political Director John Dickerson says the math shows that Trump must win 52 percent of the remaining delegates to meet the convention rules and win a majority. Other professionals, like NBC Political Director Chuck Todd, ballpark Trump as needing to win about 57 percent of the remaining delegates. When we consider that,

until New York, Trump had never won 50 percent of the vote, that spells real competition – especially considering that Cruz has won primaries above 50 percent and Kasich’s vote-getting power is increasing.

Yes, the math shows that Cruz cannot mathematically secure the nomination in the remaining primaries.

But the same math shows that Trump, mathematically, has to score big in each and every primary to win, something he has achieved but once. Given some of the rules, like winner takes all, or most, he will likely get close to achieving victory before heading to Cleveland.

The real dark horses in this election year are Kasich and Sanders. No professional thought they would get this far.

It’s an astounding feat of survival of the fittest. Sanders now has his toughest test. He needs to win 73 percent of the delegates being contested in these last primaries, according to Slate’s senior writer, John Voorhees.

But, Sanders has an argument. He says, correctly, that the Democrats’ superdelegates are up for grabs and he intends to win them over. Superdelegates, including Sanders himself, represent the interests of the Democratic Party, serving effectively as a peer review board of veteran public servants.

Further, we can change our minds as often as we think prudent. These superdelegates compose 15 percent of the total delegates, and could indeed make a difference on the convention floor. It

will be a tough sell. Sanders is facing the best warrior candidate of any party; yet his supporters and the voters say, “let him try.”

Elections are about seeking competent, tested leadership, and most importantly, framing and deciding issues on the economy, immigration and defense.

Even losing candidates can, through the power of the voters they win, shape the party’s position and push the winning candidates to encompass more of their view.

Incidentally, one of the results of the New York primary is the talk making the rounds that we are seeing a “more presidential” Donald Trump afterwards. Have you seen that? We’ve really lowered our standards when we say Trump is more presidential because he got through one news conference without insulting any of his opponents.

What I have seen is Donald Trump insulting Republican delegates who’ve been elected by the voters to support Cruz, Rubio, Bush and Kasich. If I were one of their delegates, I’d bristle and fight back. Trump is saying that delegates who support Cruz et al, won by fraudulent manipulation at the polls – the definition of rigging.

Sorry, but it just ain’t so.

Lt. gov. position stays; Springfield politics continue A proposal to give Illinois voters a chance to eliminate the lieutenant governor’s office by constitutional amendment failed in the state Senate this month.

Never mind that Gov. Bruce Rauner campaigned on consolidating government and finding spending efficiencies. Never mind that this would save taxpayers some $1.6 million a year.

Never mind that this is pretty much a do-nothing office. Never mind that the person who holds the job now, Evelyn Sanguinetti, has said it ought to go. Never mind that 14 Senate Republicans who cast a “nay” last week reportedly sponsored an identical measure three years ago. Never

mind that other states have done it.

Indeed, there were so many flip-flops on this issue, up to the governor himself, that the Capitol would be one dizzy place if its denizens ever had experienced equilibrium and knew the difference. Why the change of heart?

Because it would change the line of succession should the governor be somehow incapacitated, with an independently elected attorney general taking over instead of a lieutenant governor. And gasp, those two officeholders could be of different parties. (As is the case now, with the Republican Rauner and

the Democrat Lisa Madigan.)

So again, it’s all about politics in Springfield, rarely about good government, mostly about them, not about us. It’s like the endless lip service given to merging the state treasurer and comptroller offices. The merits have nothing to do with it.

Our legislators will forgive constituents who say they shouldn’t stop at the lieutenant governor’s office, who ask: Since only four of them seem to matter much in the General Assembly, why do taxpayers need 173 others taking up space and payroll?

We’d like to think that’s starting to change. We’ll see.

Meanwhile, Lincoln-Way West hopes it can just forget about its latest match.

With the Porters turning in what their coach described as their best performance of the year and the Warriors recording what their coach considered to be their worst outing, the outcome wasn’t all that surprising.

Lockport jumped out to a quick advantage and coasted in the opener before gradually puling away in the late going of the finale to claim a 25-13, 25-15 SouthWest Suburban Conference home victory over West.

“I was very proud of the guys’ efforts,” Porters coach Nick Mraz said.

“That’s the worst that we’ve played in a long time,” Thorp said. “Take nothing away from Lockport, since it played very well. I was really impressed with the team that they have this year. But we missed a bunch of serves and had a bunch of hitting errors, and this is what can happen when you take one night off, since everyone in this conference can play.

“This is a young group and that’s sometimes what you get with young guys where they haven’t been in a lot of high-intensity matches. I’ll take a lot of the blame as coach for not being prepared, so we’ll come back to practice and work hard.”

Things quickly got out of hand at the start of the match as the Porters jumped out to a 5-1 lead and then scored nine of the next 11 points to grab a 14-3 advantage. Lockport received two kills from Jake Skrobin and a pair of aces from Anthony Pfeiffer (12 assists, three blocks) during that early spurt while five others added kills.

Plainfield North hits together, tops Minooka

“If that’s the way the girls want to do it, I’ll take it,” the Plainfield North softball coach said Tuesday after her Tigers lumped five of their six hits in a fourrun fourth inning and beat Southwest Prairie foe Minooka, 4-1. “But these girls really do feed off each other’s energy.”

The wind was howling in on the cold afternoon. Minooka leadoff hitter Lexi Cerven belted a fly ball toward center field in the first inning, only to be caught by the glove of left fielder Sarah Barkash for the out.

“Lexi hit the ball hard and it just died,” Minooka coach Mark Brown said.

“From the beginning, it was a tough day for the hitters.”

“Their first hitter hit the ball in the air and it just hung up,” Wodziak said.

After Minooka senior right-hander Shannon Stuchly had allowed no hits and only one runner through three innings, the North hitters seemed to take a different approach the second time through the lineup.

With Minooka (8-9, 3-4) leading 1-0, Krista Ferry opened the bottom of the fourth for North (12-4, 6-1) with a clean single to center. Carolyn Hett sacrificed, and Emily Kitchell singled home the tying run. Winning pitcher Abbey Knuzel doubled to right-center to put runners on second and third, and senior third baseman Delaney Johnson drilled a two-run single to right for a 3-1 Tigers lead.

“We had good timing,” Johnson said.

“We all started hitting together. We chained our hits along. Hitting is contagious with us. We started pounding the ball.”

“I’ve seen Delaney since her freshman year, and there is such a spark about her this year,” Wodziak said.

“This is her best year.”

Barkash finished the fourth-inning uprising with a run-scoring single to account for the final score.

Outside of that inning, Stuchly allowed one hit, a sixth-inning single by Greta Thompson. She struck out four, walked two and hit one. She will be the Indians’ No. 1 pitcher the rest of the season, as Brown said Alyssa Hajduk has left the team.

“Shannon has varsity experience, and we will be leaning on her the rest of the season,” Brown said. “She will step into a leadership role.

“They took advantage of their opportunities against her in that one inning.

They got a couple of big hits. They have a program that is getting better.”

Knuzel, a junior right-hander, tossed a four-hitter with five strikeouts. The only walk she yielded – to Audrey Hanouw with one out in the first inning – led to Minooka’s run.

Hanouw stole second, advanced to third on Julie Czerniakowski’s groundout and scored on Stuchly’s infield single. North second baseman Carolyn Hett made a diving, backhanded stop on a shot up the middle and made a perfect throw from one knee, but Stuchly beat it to make it 1-0.

The other Minooka hits were Cerven’s one-out single in the third, Maria Ruettiger’s two-out single in the fifth and Stuchly’s two-out single in the sixth.

Hanouw was robbed of a hit leading off the sixth when right fielder Bri Dunbar made a circus catch along the foul line.

“Abbey (Knuzel) has stepped up this year,” Wodziak said. “Mentally, she has taken it to another level.”

“It was fun,” Knuzel said. “It would have been easier to play without the wind, but everyone adjusted to it. We got our runs when we started hitting down on the ball. We had some nice clutch hitting.”

While North continues to battle for the conference lead entering the second round of SPC play, the Indians feel they are close.

“We have been in just about every game,” Brown said. “In the long run that will serve us well. We’re right on the cusp.”

South received a great relief performance from right-hander Eric Fitzmaurice, who fired two scoreless innings, striking out four.

“For the first time, in 19 games, our pitcher and catcher had a tough game,” South coach Phil Bodine said. “Konnor (Ash) did not throw well and our catcher, Gabe Wair, who has been outstanding, had a tough night. We played very poorly and gave them their four runs. On the bright side, I was very impressed with Eric’s (Fitzmaurice’s) performance. We’ll be fine. VanAsdlen (4-2) thus entered the Minooka baseball history books with a complete-game no-hitter. He struck out seven, walked five. Plainfield South (145, 6-4) had entered the three-game Southwest Prairie Conference series riding a five-game winning streak.

“My splitter was really working well,” VanAsdlen said. “It felt great to get the 4-6-3 double play to complete the no-hitter. It was my first no-no of my varsity career. I threw a perfect game in

my freshman year.

“Joe Butler saved my no-hitter and the game for us with his incredible catch in the fourth inning. I knew I had the no-no heading into the seventh, and I just told myself to just get the ball over the plate and my defense will do the rest.”

The win was the sixth in a row for Minooka (12-7, 7-3) and put the Indians in sole possession of second place in the SPC, two games behind Plainfield North After Minooka picked up two unearned runs in the bottom of the third to lead 2-0, Butler made the play of the game in the fourth. With Plainfield South’s Marco Escobar on first, having reached on an error with one out, South’s Nick Enloe hit a fly to short right field. With the 20 mph wind playing havoc, it appeared it would fall for the first Cougar hit. Butler circled around the popup and made an incredible diving catch, then fired a strike to first base, doubling off a bewildered Escobar to end the inning.

“I was just waiting for someone to call me off the ball,” Butler said.” When

Hawks positioned for more success

The Associated Press CHICAGO – No June hockey for the Blackhawks this year.

Heck, even May is a blank slate.

Plenty of time for the Hawks to plan for their sticky situation with the salary cap.

The Hawks’ title defense ended Monday night when they lost 3-2 to the St. Louis Blues in Game 7 of their compelling first-round series. Six of the seven games were decided by one goal, and Brent Seabrook and Andrew Ladd each had a shot go off both goal posts during losses for the Hawks.

It’s the quickest exit for the Hawks since they also dropped their first playoff series in 2012. They won the Stanley Cup the next year, lost to the Los Angeles Kings in an epic Western Conference finals in 2014 and won the championship again last year.

While the Hawks should be able to contend for another title next season – most of its talented core is signed to long-term deals – it’s also going to have to say goodbye to several players because of its ongoing wrestling match with the salary cap. Ladd, Dale Weise and Tomas Fleischmann – each of them acquired in deadline trades – likely will leave in free agency, and Andrew Shaw, Richard Panik and Brandon Mashinter also could be headed out the door.

The 24-year-old Shaw, who has spent his entire career in Chicago, is eligible for restricted free agency. He had 14 goals and 20 assists in the regular season, and then led the Hawks with four

Coach Joel Quenneville loves Shaw’s grit and presence in front of the net, but it’s going to be difficult for general manager Stan Bowman to keep the pesky forward. Bowman faced a similar situation last summer with Brandon Saad, a younger, more

talented player than Shaw, but also eligible for restricted free agency, and the Blackhawks traded him to Columbus on June 30.

Panik also can become a restricted free agent, and Mashinter is eligible for unrestricted free agency. Panik was acquired in a January trade with Toronto and showed promise in the playoffs

against the Blues. Mashinter had four goals and an assist in 41 games this season after beginning the year with no points in 23 career NHL games.

Shedding Bryan Bickell’s salary could provide some much-needed cap relief, but the Hawks have been unable to trade the underperforming winger.

Bowman likely would have to pair Bickell with one of Hawks’ prospects to pull off such a deal, and the team might be inclined to ride out the last year of the forward’s $16 million, four-year contract instead.

No matter who stays or goes, the Hawks likely will have a similar look next season. Patrick Kane, coming off his first career scoring title, and captain Jonathan Toews lead one of the NHL’s most potent attacks, and Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook and Niklas Hjalmarsson anchor one of the league’s best defenses.

The extra time off for their biggest stars will help, but any hope of any significant improvement likely rests with the development of their younger players, namely on the blue line.

Trevor van Riemsdyk played in 82 games this season and led the team with 155 blocks. Erik Gustafsson, another 24-year-old defenseman, made his NHL debut in October and finished with 14 assists in 41 games.

But van Riemsdyk had a couple of costly gaffes in the playoffs and Gustafsson played just seven minutes in each of the last two games against St. Louis. They have to provide more support for Keith, Seabrook and Hjalmarsson for the Hawks to make another deep run in the postseason.

The Associated Press TORONTO – Chris Sale won again, pitching eight sharp innings and leading the White Sox over the Toronto Blue Jays, 10-1, Tuesday night for their fifth straight win.

Sale (5-0) has won all of his starts this season and leads the majors in victories. The lefty ace has a 1.66 ERA. Sale carried a one-hitter into the seventh inning, retiring 13 straight batters before Edwin Encarnacion homered. Sale gave up four hits in eight innings, striking out six and walking two.

Dioner Navarro hit a two-run homer, and Avisail Garcia and Adam Eaton added solo shots for the Sox. The three home runs, 15 hits and 10 runs all are season highs for the Sox. R.A. Dickey (1-3) allowed six runs and eight hits in six innings. The knuckleballer is winless in his past four outings and dropped to 2-6 in 12 career games against the Sox. Austin Jackson got three hits and drove in two runs. Every Sox batter had at least one hit.

CHICAGO – Addison Russell’s two-out, two-run triple in the sixth inning snapped a tie and the Cubs held off the Milwaukee Brewers, 4-3, Thursday night to secure their best 20-game start since 1907.

Anthony Rizzo added an RBI single in the seventh and Adam Warren (2-0) struck out three in two scoreless innings as the Cubs improved to 15-5, surpassing the 1969 club’s 14-6 start. The 1907 World Series-winning team began 16-4.

Ryan Braun’s pinch-hit, two-run double off Pedro Strop in the eighth got the Brewers within a run. But Hector Rondon pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save.

With a 16 mph wind blowing in and the wind chill 34 degrees at first pitch, runs were at a premium. Third baseman Aaron Hill’s fielding error to begin the sixth led to two unearned runs off Jimmy Nelson (3-2) in the Brewers’ fourth loss in five games.

Russell’s triple into the left-center gap off Carlos Torres was one of the few balls with enough power to get deep into the outfield. Russell also singled.

Loss of Bennett creates hole at TE

kfishbain@chicagofootball.com Bears general manager Ryan Pace’s first draft included four offensive players out of six draft picks, even with a supposed bigger need on defense. This year, Pace has nine picks, and still a big need on defense, but the Bears’ offense is down two starters from 2015 – Martellus Bennett and Matt Forte. Here’s our position-by-position examination of the needs facing the Bears on offense for the NFL draft, which begins Thursday in Chicago.

QUARTERBACK

The quote heard around Chicago came from Pace at the NFL Scouting Combine in February, when he said there are “a handful of quarterbacks in the middle part of the draft that I feel good about and that we’ve got to make sure we’ve accurately graded, and that’s where our scouts really earn their AP file photo money.”

“We made decisions last week that we were able to make because we have great confidence in our young backs,” coach John Fox said at the combine after the Bears decided to move on from Forte. Pretty straightforward ... until the Bears made an aggressive play for C.J. Anderson. If the right player is there, the Bears will take him, and supplant Langford as the top back. If not, they’re comfortable with Langford. Running back is a position that has to get more depth.

Potential targets: Ezekiel Elliott, Kenneth Dixon, C.J. Prosise, Josh Ferguson

RECEIVER

We can be pretty confident this position won’t be addressed in the first round. Alshon Jeffery, Kevin White and Eddie Royal are a solid trio – if healthy – and then there’s depth with Marquess Wilson, Marc Mariani, Josh Bellamy and Deonte Thompson.

Zach Miller has the receiving abilities to keep production high at a position that lost Bennett, but behind him are Rob Housler, Khari Lee and Gannon Sinclair. Miller is not the blocker Bennett is, and although he stayed healthy in 2015, his injury history can’t be ignored.

OFFENSIVE LINE

We should be able to rule out guard and center as top needs. And that brings us to offensive tackle. Would the Bears have that same comfort they’ve maintained in left tackle Charles Leno if a player such as Ronnie Stanley was available at No. 11? We’ll find out Thursday night, but one thing for sure is the Bears should consider adding depth at tackle.

Questions at safety follow the Bears year after year, and this is no different. There’s a lot to like about Amos, but not the team’s depth at safety. It’s another weak draft at safety, but the Bears could use more youth at the position.

People often ask me what my most-used kitchen tool is (a high-speed blender). But if you were to ask my mom that same question 30 years ago, I am sure she would have answered her Pyrex baking dish.

When I was growing up, probably 75 percent of my meals were made in that thing. Baked fish. Baked chicken.

Baked pasta. Baked rice casserole.

As I got older and moved into my own apartment, I wondered why my mom didn’t explore other techniques a little more. Now that I’m a mom, I understand the appeal of the litany of baked dishes my mom had on her menu. Baked stuff is easy. As a mom of four busy girls, I need something easy to make on a Tuesday night, because between dance class and lacrosse practice, I only have a short

window during which to make dinner happen. And since the healthiest dinners are the ones we make ourselves, baked chicken is on frequent repeat in my family meal repertoire.

But I’ve learned a few lessons during the past 40 years, improving significantly upon Mom’s version.

First, I use dark meat chicken with the bone-in. This significantly widens the window of cooking time forgiveness, so if someone is running late, dinner is still juicy. Plus, dark meat chicken has more flavor, and the little extra fat means it’s more filling.

Second, I go heavy with the aromatics – herbs, onion and garlic almost can’t be overused in baked chicken.

Upgrading from white wine to vermouth also is a great flavor-booster. Lastly, I start the chicken with just enough of a sauté to get a tasty, golden crust. But if you really can’t make that happen, don’t be shy about just

loading up that glass baking dish and popping it into the oven.

Best Baked Weeknight Chicken Start to finish: 1 hour 15 minutes Servings: 4

8 bone-in chicken thighs, skin removed Kosher salt and ground black pepper 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided 2 teaspoons herbes de Provence (or dried thyme and oregano mixed) 20 cloves garlic, peeled and lightly smashed 3 shallots, thinly sliced 1/4 cup lemon juice 1/4 cup dry vermouth Heat the oven to 350 degrees F. Season the chicken with salt and pepper. In a large, Dutch oven over medium-high, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil. Working in batches, briefly brown the chicken thighs on both

sides, 6 to 7 minutes, transferring them to a plate as you work.

In a small bowl, toss together the herbes de Provence, garlic, shallots and remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Add a little salt and pepper.

Once all the chicken has browned, return it to the pot off the heat. Arrange the chicken in a single, but tight layer. Spoon the shallot and garlic mixture around the chicken. Pour the lemon juice and vermouth evenly around the chicken. Cover the pot and bake for 15 minutes. Uncover and bake for another 15 to 25 minutes, or until the chicken reaches 175 degrees F.

Spatchcocking isn’t just a fun word to teach your kids to say on the playground. It’s also a great way to get dinner on the table fast.

Also called butterflying, spatchcocking is a simple prep technique that cuts down the time needed to roast a chicken. It does this by changing the shape of the bird, transforming it from a slow cooking football to a faster roasting slab.

And the only special equipment you need is a sturdy pair of kitchen shears.

To do this, simply flip the uncooked chicken so the breasts are down. Starting at either the front or back end, find the center, where the backbone runs down the length of the bird. It will take a little oomph at first, but use the shears to cut down the length of the backbone on one side. Once you’ve cut all the way, repeat this on the other side of the backbone, which then should come out easily. If you’re making stock, save the backbone for that. Otherwise, toss it out.

Now flip the bird over, grab the cut sides and spread the bird open. Press down on the bird between the breasts; the goal is to flatten it as much as possible. Once spatchcocked, the chicken can be seasoned and roasted as normal, but will take less time. A standard 3½- to 4-pound chicken roasted at 425 degrees F. will take almost an hour.

A spatchcocked chicken takes about 35 minutes.

Now that you’ve mastered how to speed up your dinner, we’ll help you jazz it up a bit. Why just roast a plain chicken when you could add tons of flavor to it? Here are 10 fresh ideas for making your weeknight chicken dinner way more interesting.

Start with a 3- to 4-pound whole chicken.

Remove any giblets and neck from the cavity, then use paper towels to pat it dry. Spatchcock the chicken as described above. Place the chicken in a roasting pan. Follow one of the flavoring directions below, then roast at 400 degrees F. until the breast reaches 160 degrees F. and the thigh reaches 175 degrees F. Allow to rest for 10 minutes before carving.

Stir together 1/4 teaspoon cayenne, 1 tablespoon finely ground coffee, 1/2 teaspoon cumin, 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Brush the chicken with melted butter then rub with the seasoning mixture under and over the skin and on the inside.

Stir together 1/2 cup finely grated Parmesan cheese, 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, 1 tablespoon minced fresh rosemary and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Brush the chicken with melted butter, then thoroughly coat with it the cheese mixture.

Research changes disease treatment Dear Dr. K: I have diabetes, and my doctor used to tell me my fasting blood sugar level needed to be below a certain number. Now, he says it’s OK if it’s higher. Why do doctors keep changing their minds about the right thing to do?

Dear Reader: We doctors keep changing our minds because we’re human. Which means we sometimes believe things that seem reasonable and for which there is some evidence – only to find out, as more and better research is done, we were wrong.

Suppose you were living in the 15th century. Every (clear) day of your life you would see the sun rising in the morning in the east, moving higher in the sky, then at midday starting to move lower and finally setting in the west. And every clear night of your life, you would see the moon and stars also moving across the sky. Wouldn’t common sense have told you the sun, moon and stars – the entire universe – revolved around the Earth?

I’m pretty sure that’s what I would have assumed.

I graduated medical school believing I had learned the very best current treatments for different diseases. Of course, new and better treatments likely were to be discovered during my career. But I believed every treatment I’d learned about was the best currently available, and clearly better than no treatment at all.

The first time I recall being disabused of that idea involved a treatment for bleeding ulcers (in the small intestine and stomach), which were a very common problem then.

A surgeon had a clever idea, called “gastric freezing.” He developed a plastic tube with a balloon at the end of it. The tube was pushed down through the mouth

The very cold balloon froze the lining of the stomach. It made sense this would reduce the production of stomach acid (which was thought to cause and worsen the bleeding ulcer). It also made sense it would encourage the blood to clot and the bleeding to stop.

Every patient on which the surgeon tried gastric freezing told him they felt better afterward. He published the results and went around the country talking about his new treatment. Several thousand gastric freezing machines with tubes were sold around the United States.

Up to 15,000 people got the new treatment.

Then several studies were done in which some people with ulcers were given the true gastric freezing treatment, and some just had the tube placed in their stomach without the freezing treatment.

Thirty percent of the people given the freezing treatment improved – but 34 percent of those who did not get the treatment improved as well. In other words, the treatment was no better than (and maybe a little worse than) no treatment at all. Needless to say, the treatment ceased to be used.

In tomorrow’s column, I’ll talk more about how and why treatments sometimes fall out of favor.

DEAR ABBY a divorced man dating a diJeanne vorcée, “Sylvie,” Phillips who is eight years younger.

I recently learned she had an affair before we met, and it is affecting the way I see her.

The man she had the affair with still is married. I had an affair while I was married, and although I understand how affairs can happen, I don’t condone them. It took me several years to forgive myself for the hurt my actions caused.

Sylvie tells me things are over with this man, yet she continues to do business with him. In my mind she ought to find alternative vendors to deal with. We have spoken about it, and she insists no one else in our area carries or represents the product line he offers.

I feel if she truly is over him, then all communication, both personal and professional, should cease. It’s not that I don’t trust Sylvie, but I believe things might reignite between them in a weak moment. Am I being ridiculous? – Dazed In Wisconsin Dear Dazed: You’re not being ridiculous, but the truth is you don’t completely trust Sylvie when she says the affair is history. For her to sacrifice a necessary business contact because you are insecure would be a mistake.

Dear Abby: My boyfriend of three years slapped me across the face a few nights ago.

He has never done that before, and he promised he’d never do it again. After he hit me, he immediately apologized, but said I was partly at fault because I had taunted and belittled him. I love him very much and know he would never want to hurt me.

We’re both in our 20s and have expressed our devout love for each other. My boyfriend is the sweetest guy and truly makes me a happier person, but I don’t know if I can fully trust and be in love with him after he hit me. I feel partly responsible for what happened that night, but I know I didn’t deserve to be hit.

But once slapping starts, it often escalates to pushing, hitting and more serious violence. One of the hallmarks of an abuser is blaming the victim by saying he/she deserved it, and it is a big, red warning sign.

Because you have said your boyfriend has never shown any other signs of being abusive in your three-year relationship, consider this incident an unfortunate one-time occurrence.

But keep your eyes wide open in case it wasn’t.

As they pass, the calls and tricks of a deal provide declarer with more and more information -- our topic this week.

In today’s deal, South ended in four spades. West cashed three top diamonds. East played high-low to show his doubleton, then discarded the heart king (top of touching honors as he was not winning the trick).

West shifted to the heart nine. How should South have continued after taking this trick?

Note South’s bid over East’s weak two-bid. Do not pre-empt against a pre-empt. Three spades was an intermediate jump overcall showing a good six-card or longer suit, some 15-17 high-card points and typically seven winners.

West thought about sacrificing in five hearts, but was dissuaded by the unfavorable vulnerability. Still, although the contract could have gone down two (initial club lead, or the heart ace followed by a club shift), it would probably have escaped for down one (spade-ace lead ruffed and three rounds of diamonds for a club discard).

South had lost three diamond tricks, so had to find the club queen to get home. The key clue was West’s initial pass. He had shown up with 10 points in diamonds, so with the club queen surely would have opened the bidding. Declarer drew trumps, cashed dummy’s club ace, then finessed through East.

LEGAL NOTICE CITY OF JOLIET ADVERTISEMENT TO BIDS CONTRACT NO. 2174-0516 REPUBLIC AVENUE (GLENWOOD-JEFFERSON) WATER MAIN IMPROVEMENT PROJECT - 2016 The City of Joliet, Illinois, does hereby invite sealed bids for 2,600 lineal feet of ductile iron water main, 10”, 2,500 square yards of hot mix asphalt removal & replacement 10”, 36 water service connections, 1,300 lineal feet of copper water service lines various sizes, topsoil & seeding restoration & various water main related items.

Bids will be received at the Office of the City Clerk, City of Joliet Municipal Building, 150 West Jefferson Street, Joliet, Illinois 604324156 until 9:45 A.M. local time on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at which time they will be opened and publicly read aloud.

Those desiring to submit a bid may examine the bid documents and detailed specifications in the City of Joliet Purchasing Division, 150 W. Jefferson St., Joliet, IL 60432 between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 4:30 P.M., Monday through Friday. Electronic copies can be downloaded free of charge at http://www.cityofjoliet.info/bids-proposals. All bidders will be required to submit Bid Security in the form of a Certified Check, Cashier's Check or a Bid Bond in the amount of Ten percent (10%) of the Base Bid, payable to the City of Joliet.

All Bidding Document holders should sign up for RSS feeds at http://cityofjoliet.info/departments/finance/purchasing/bids-proposals/construction-public-utilities and provide your first and last name and email address to automatically receive addendums.

Addendums will also be posted on the City of Joliet's website at http://www.cityofjoliet.info/bids-proposals. The potential vendor/contractor remains responsible for obtaining all addenda to the original specification so they should check the specific bid page before submitting a bid to make sure they have received all addendums to a specific contract.

The City of Joliet has a local qualified bidder ordinance that would apply to this contract. To apply to be a local qualified bidder please go to http://www.cityofjoliet.info/departments/finance/purchasing/prequalification-process. The successful bidder will be required to post performance Security and to provide a Certificate of Insurance as set forth in the Invitation of Bid and the General Terms & Conditions.

Bidders are required to be pre-qualified through the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Capital Development Board or the City of Joliet. It is the responsibility of the bidder to ensure that their pre-qualification information is provided to the City of Joliet Purchasing Division prior to the bid opening. If bidders are not prequalified through IDOT or Capital Development Board, then they must be prequalified with the City of Joliet. Financial prequalification forms can be obtained from the City of Joliet website at http://www.cityofjoliet.info/departments/finance/purchasing/prequalification-process. This prequalification MUST be renewed yearly. To check on your current prequalification status, you can contact purchasing@jolietcity.org. The current price for City of Joliet prequalification is $175, which offsets the costs for independent auditor review of the documents. Those documents are to be submitted to the Purchasing Division, City of Joliet, 150 W. Jefferson Street, Joliet, IL 60432 at least 6 days prior to the bid opening.

The City of Joliet reserves the right to reject any and all bids, parts of any and all bids, or to waive technical errors or omissions in bids.

The Contract shall be subject to the provisions of the Prevailing Wage Act (820 ILCS 130/1 et seq.) to the extent required by law.
