Brandon Road Lock – Illinois Waterway JOLIET – In the first two decades of the 20th century, the Sanitary and Ship Canal and the Cal-Sag Channel made some deep water shipping possible in the region, but the terminus was Joliet.

Predictable deep water down stream from Joliet on the Des Plaines and Illinois Rivers were unreliable, so, in 1919, the Illinois General Assembly passed legislation to authorize the construction and development of the Illinois Waterway, a project designed to provide a navigation channel between Lockport and Utica.

The construction of the modern Illinois Waterway was started by the State of Illinois in 1920. By 1930, about 2/3 of the work was completed, and the entire project was turned over to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, who resumed construction and opened the waterway on June 22, 1933.

During the second phase, 1922-1933, the Ohio River Standard Navigation lock, control station and other auxiliary structures were constructed as part of the building of the Illinois Waterway. The state of Illinois designed the new Ohio River Standard Navigation lock, measuring 110-feet-wideby-600-feet-long with a 41-foot lift, which was the largest in the United States at the time.

St. Vincent de Paul shop opens second store in former Aldi’s

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – “I used to come here all the time when it was Aldi’s,” Dianna Martin of Channahon said while shopping one day last week.

The store at 1820 W. Jefferson St. is now the newest St. Vincent de Paul thrift store in the Diocese of Joliet.

The store, which opened March 19, is the latest nonprofit resale shop to locate on a major commercial street in Joliet. And it may not be the last to fill a spot once occupied by a major retailer.

The Salvation Army has applied for a special-use permit to move into the Century Tile store at 1395 Larkin Ave. Century Tile, still in the building, plans to move into another Joliet location.

“It’s very nice,” Martin said of the new St. Vincent de Paul store. “The people are nice and friendly. Last week, I did score a brand new threepiece sofa set. Brand new.”

Thrift store denizens and bargain hunters make up the retail trade for St. Vincent de Paul and other nonprofit resale shops. Being in a high-traffic location makes the store easier to find.

“I have some people who come in two or three times a day,” store manager Luis Trujillo said. “People come in from other towns.”

St. Vincent de Paul already had a store in downtown Joliet on Chicago Street – no longer a major retail area. That store is staying open.

Trujillo, who also managed the Chicago Street store, said he has seen new customers at the new location. But he also sees many of the old customers.

“I think it’s wonderful,” JoAnn Grose of Joliet, a longtime customer, said of the new store. “It’s very impressive.

niture is out of sight.”

The new store has the same kind of merchandise as the Chicago Street store – only more of it. The Jefferson Street store is as much as four times larger, Trujillo said.

The mission

But one thing has not changed.

“Our mission is still the same,” Trujillo said. “We support our poor families. We will continue to do that.”

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul provides rental and utility assistance. Not everyone who shops there pays cash. Many customers have vouchers provided by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul because of financial need and the store provides them with clothes.

Bill Thomas, general manager for St. Vincent de Paul stores in the Joliet diocese, started out as a volunteer. He still remembers his first day.

He visited a man who needed steel-toed shoes for his first day on a new job or he could not work. But the man did not have the money to buy the shoes.

“I took him to Kmart and

bought him some steel-toed work shoes,” Thomas said. “It was the best 45 bucks I ever spent.”

While the mission stays the same, Thomas said locating stores in major commercial districts is a trend.

“We’re doing that more and more,” he said. “We’re getting more involved with business districts.”

Rialto sidewalk crumbling, but what to do?

JOLIET – Watch your step if you’re walking behind the Rialto Square Theatre.

The section of Scott Street sidewalk is crumbling, another sign of disrepair at a theater that will have netting at about 40 spots on its exterior walls as a safety measure until it can afford to complete terra cotta repairs.

“It’s extremely dangerous,” building manager Mike Biedron told the Rialto board last week as he gave his monthly report on building

conditions.

Just who is responsible for the sidewalk may be an issue before it gets repaired.

The sidewalk behind the Rialto, and elsewhere downtown, is vaulted, meaning there is open space beneath the sidewalks that was used to run utility lines and even store coal in days of yore.

Rialto officials said the vaulted sidewalk, combined with the demolition of the Ivanhoe Building in 2004, led to the sidewalk problem. The Will County Metropolitan Exposition Authority, which owns the Rialto, also owned

the Ivanhoe Building.

“I believe the vaulted sidewalk is the responsibility of the city,” Biedron told the board.

City Manager Jim Hock said the city is aware of the sidewalk breaking up behind the Rialto. But the deterioration is not so much a result of the sidewalk being vaulted as it is due to insufficient backfill being used after the Ivanhoe demolition, he said.

“In the Rialto case, that’s strictly because of a demolition where they didn’t put in enough backfill,” he said.

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Hufford Junior High Schools students will learn this week what it takes to hunt for jobs and work Junior Achievement of Chicago, a nonprofit education organization, will team up with Caterpillar and Standard Bank & Trust to teach Joliet students Monday and Tuesday about financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship.

JA of Chicago works with schools throughout the Chicago area to teach students from elementary to high school how to succeed outside of school and make economic choices.

Volunteers from Standard Bank will be available this week to help Hufford Junior High students.

“They’re able to infuse their own work and life experience in the program,” said Laura Cebula, JA of Chicago marketing and development manager. “… That’s a really nice added benefit for the students. They can hear stories from professionals in the

Students will learn the four Cs of the JA Career Success Program: critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity. Students also will learn strong soft skills, work prioritizing, personal branding, job hunting tools, resume writing and interviewing.

The program consists of several sessions throughout the day that give students

the tools and skills needed to earn and keep a job in highgrowth industries, according to the organization’s website.

“It just really gives them a nice foundation on what to expect when they go to high school and find a part-time job,” Cebula said.

Caterpillar is providing $4,000 to make the program possible.

JA of Chicago reached 484,239 students across 12 counties – including northwest Indiana – last year.

During that time, JA volunteers with the Will and Kankakee County Division reached 1,234 classrooms and 23,844 students, according to the group’s website.

This year, it has a goal of reaching 153 more classrooms and 2,101 more students.

JA of Chicago was founded in 1919 and was offered to high school students on an after-school basis.

The Chicago chapter of the organization was chartered in 1940. In 1974, JA transformed from an after-school program into a nationwide effort.

Terra cotta update

In Biedron’s update on the terra cotta situation, he said crews should finish major repairs and remove scaffolding by the end of May. In the course of the $2.2 million terra cotta project, additional problems were discovered that could cost as

much as $400,000. Not having the money, Rialto officials used a $40,000 donation from the Rialto Square Theatre Volunteer Organization for netting to prevent any bad terra cotta pieces from falling on the sidewalks below.

LOCAL BRIEFS Lockport fatality remains under investigation

LOCKPORT – The cause of a one-vehicle crash that killed a Lockport man Saturday still is being investigated.

The Lockport Police Department was dispatched to the 900 block of north State Street at 6:06 a.m. Saturday for a vehicle crash, according to a news release from Lockport police. Upon arrival, officers found a black 2003 Mercury Sable that had left the roadway, rolled over and struck a tree.

Lockport Township Fire Protection District personnel were able to extricate the driver, later identified as Rudolfo Vasquez, 31, but Vasquez was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and there were no passengers present in Vasquez’s vehicle, according to the release. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined, and members of the Lockport Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Team are continuing to investigate the incident.

The Will County Coroner’s Office reported Saturday that Vasquez had died as a result

of multiple injuries from the crash. The final cause of death will be determined pending the police investigation and toxicology reports.

The Lockport Emergency Management Agency assisted with traffic control.

Vehicle strikes Lockport house Sunday morning

LOCKPORT – Lockport police are investigating a vehicle versus house crash that occurred in the early morning hours Sunday.

About 3 a.m., Lockport Police Department responded to a report of a reckless driver in the area of the 2000 block of East Street. Upon arrival, officers observed that a silver 2011 Chevrolet Silverado had struck a home, according to a news release from Lockport police.

The occupants of the home were not home at the time of the crash, according to the release.

The driver of that vehicle, Timothy Wagner was taken to Silver Cross hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening.

Wagner has been charged with driving under the influence.

In response to Better Energy Solutions for Tomorrow Coalition’s opposition of the proposed Low Carbon Portfolio Standard, mayors of municipalities surrounding Exelon’s six Illinois stations have signed a statement calling for BEST to “cease its baseless and disingenuous attacks on Illinois communities and middle class families.”

“The group is against nuclear power and set out to close nuclear power facilities,” Morris Mayor Richard Kopczick said. “They don’t care about the jobs here in Morris or in this area.”

The LCPS, if approved by the Illinois Legislature, would require ComEd and Ameren to buy low carbon energy credits to match 70 percent of the electricity used on the distribution system. Low carbon energy sources include wind, solar, hydro, clean coal and nuclear.

Almost half of the state’s electricity and 90 percent of its carbon-free power is supplied by Exelon’s six nuclear plants. Exelon Power also operates one wind power project, one solar plant and one peaker plant in Illinois.

BEST is a nonprofit organization made of business and consumer groups. A BEST Coalition study by Kestler Energy Consulting on the LCPS found it could cost ComEd and Ameren ratepayers $295 million annually over the statutory contract period from January 2016 through May 2021.

“It’s unfortunate that instead of leveling with people in Illinois, Exelon is choosing to scare communities around the state at a time when its Illinois nuclear plants are profitable and they are about to get hundreds of millions in additional ratepayer funds for those

But a post on BEST’s Facebook page argues that with more than $2 billion profit in 2014, Exelon isn’t in need of what the coalition calls a bailout.

Osgood said Exelon doesn’t consider it a bailout.

“The cost to Illinois of allowing Illinois nuclear plants to close early are as much as 12 times greater than the cost of the LCPS when fully considering increased wholesale power prices, transmission costs, adverse economic impacts and adverse environmental impacts,” Osgood said.

The study fails to take into consideration robust consumer protections in the LCPS, he said.

In addition, Tom was active in musical and theater productions at Lewis University for many years, Felicia said, and accompanied the Joliet Junior College Chorale. Tom also began two music and theater scholarships for students at Lewis University.

Keith White, theater department chairman at Lewis University, said Tom was in the first show at the Philip Lynch Theatre and accompanied many shows after it. Tom was a great musician, Keith said, and a lot of fun.

“He knew how to work with people and supported the cast and the theater community,” Keith said. “He was always at rehearsals ahead of time, ready to go.”

Tom served on the finance committee for the Joliet Area Historical Museum and was a test proctor for Mensa International, to which he belonged.

He loved culinary adventures – both cooking and eating – and had a wicked sense of humor.

A private person, but extremely social, Mark had close friends and was considered very loyal, Felicia said.

“He was very self-effacing and gifted in his talents,” Felicia said. “He would do postlude, absolutely breathtaking stunning songs to close out the worship service … music was his heart and soul.”

LOCKPORT – Mark Secor said his brother Tom of Joliet was 12 years old when he played the organ for the 5:30 a.m. daily Mass at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Joliet.

“I was probably 7 or 8 and I’d sing the Mass,” said Mark, now of Woodridge. “That’s something we did for a number of years.”

Shortly after becoming the organist and music director at St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church in Lockport – a role he had for Tom Secor almost 19 years – Tom began offering a concert series at the church, three to five concerts each year, Mark said.

A performance by Lyra, a vocal ensemble from Russia, was being scheduled when Tom died Nov. 1 at age 67.

Mark, who also belongs to St. John’s, said he completed the scheduling arrangements for Lyra and plans to keep the concert series going.

Lyra is scheduled to perform at 7 p.m. May 3 at the church, 312 E. 9th St., Lockport. The concert is free, but a free-will offering will be taken.

This is the fifth time Lyra will perform St. John’s, Mark said.

The program will consist of sacred music from the Russian Orthodox Church and Russian folk music.

“He was in contact with a lot of different artists, locally,

statewide, nationally and even internationally,” Mark said.

“He’d say, ‘Let’s reach out to the public and present music that people can come in and enjoy and experience, and let’s make it free.’ He wanted to share music with everyone.”

Mark’s wife, Felicia Elias of Woodridge, believes Tom’s background as an educator influenced his desire to share music.

“It brought him great joy to see people learn about new kinds of music,” Felicia said.

Tom started taking music lessons at age 6, and became drawn to the organ when he was 12. Mark recalled the dance lessons St. Pat’s offered in lieu of physical education classes, and how Tom, at age 12 and 13, played piano for all those dance classes. Tom never minded, Mark said.

“He was in his own world when playing music,” Mark said.

Yet, Tom majored in accounting at what now is Lewis University in Romeoville, with a minor in music. A math teacher for 35 years, Tom taught for a couple of years at St. Paul the Apostle School in Joliet and then moved to Valley View Middle School in Romeoville, where he retired, Mark added.

Tom also had a successful 55-year music career. He was coordinator of the Leadership Program for Church Musicians for the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago. He was a charter member of the American Guild of Church Organists’ Southwest Suburban Chapter,

My eldest son Pete Stadalsky and friend Nolan McClellan decided to take a 1,000-mile canoe trip last year just for the adventure of it. But then they decided to turn it into a fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association. Both their fathers are Type 1 diabetics.

By making it a fundraiser, they felt good about giving something back. Throughout the trip, they said many times that it was a way of doing something for their dads, who had done so much for them.

To everyone’s amazement, even theirs, the two young men raised more than $10,000 for diabetes research. They already are making plans for another fundraising canoe trip, possibly in 2016.

Two local women, Tina Zugel and Suzanne Jadron, are again participating in different causes because they feel the need to give back, offer support and, in Zugel’s case, find some personal healing.

Zugel started participating in American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life five years ago when a good friend was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

She has participated in it every year since. This year, there’s another reason to walk – a co-worker passed away from brain cancer.

In addition to doing what she can to support cancer survivors, this year it’s a way to help Zugel and her team members to heal after losing someone they cared about.

To raise money for their team – The Hamsters, taken from their co-workers nickname of Hamie – Zugel will hold a team garage sale Friday and Saturday at her Channahon home. Another team member will have one at her Joliet home. This is the team’s big fundraiser for the year.

Jadron of Minooka participated in the Miles for Memories walkathon for Royal Family Kids two years in a row, but now she’s moved on to working the events as a mentor director.

Royal Family Kids offers children who have been abused, neglected or abandoned an opportunity to attend a weeklong camp where they are treated like royalty, leaving behind their problems for a short time and having the experiences many children take for granted every day.

The cost of sending a child to camp is $650, and there are no out-of-pocket costs to the foster parents. Royal Family Kids fundraise for every dollar they need.

Each child gets a birthday party while at camp, something most never get to have at home. They roast marshmallows, go hiking and boating and have time to enjoy life as a child.

Jadron signed up as a counselor after walking in the event a couple years and went through extensive training.

This past year, she accepted a volunteer position as mentor director.

Through the mentoring program, Royal Family Kids assigns a mentor to children from camp. With their one-onone time and a monthly club, the kids keep the connections they first made at camp within a healthy environment.

Jadron says she has no “story” to tell about why she wants to give back. She feels fortunate in her own life and her children have good lives.

She’s just always felt a need to be involved with foster kids.

Local author sets supernatural mystery in real Lemont for novel

Now she also is a published author.

Her first book, “The Mystery at Sag Bridge,” is a supernatural mystery set in Lemont.

Camalliere believes the timing of the book’s release is good, because its theme of motherhood makes it an appropriate Mother’s Day gift.

Camalliere talked with Shaw Media reporter Dan Farnham about the process of writing the book.

Dan Farnham: How did the book get started?

Camalliere: I think I always

wanted to write since I was a child. … I especially love mysteries. My career and my life was very busy. … After I retired, I said, “You know, I don’t really have a lot of time left. If I’m going to do this, I got to do it now.” So, what do I want to write about? Well, I want to write about Lemont because it’s a very special place. … My situation was, we have a retired woman. What if she notices little odd things that happen – they’ve happened to her her whole life – and she always tosses them off as unimportant. … What if there was a presence behind that?

… Then, because I’m very interested in history and was working here at the historical society, I wanted to also have historical background.

Farnham: How much Lemont would a reader recognize in this book?

Camalliere: The book is

written in two time periods.

The book is written as if it’s today, and it goes back to the time period of 1898. … So, as she’s driving down [Archer Avenue], she’s describing what she’s seeing now and what she would have seen in 1898, because it would have looked very different at that time.

Someone living in Lemont would know that. There would be some surprises, because they may or may not know that there’s a network of tunnels under Lemont. … I was hoping to put some things that would surprise people, so even if you live here, you would say, “Oh, but I didn’t know about that.”

Farnham: Did you try to be as accurate as possible?

Camalliere: Nothing is being

made up about the geographic features. Wherever something was made up, I would have changed the character’s name. … I think you can basically say that the town is represented appropriately. Many of the happenings are described accurately. Some of them are not. There is an afterword in the book that tells you which is which.

Farnham: Is this a book for people who live in Lemont or people who don’t know much about Lemont?

Camalliere: Both of those

things, but maybe to me even more important than that, is that Lemont is such a special place that the world should know about it. I wanted to write something that was hopefully captivating enough so that somebody in California could pick up this and say, “Wow, that sounds like a great place, Lemont. I want to go and visit there.”

Farnham: How do you feel now that you’ve published the book?

Camalliere: I don’t know if it’s really sunk in. It’s such a long process. It’s so much work. … You find a publisher, but anybody, unless you’re Stephen King, you market your own books now. … So, basically, I love it, but it’s a lot of work. I feel fulfilled. I feel satisfied. I feel like something I’ve always wanted to do came out well.

Farnham: What would you see as being successful for this book?

Camalliere: I’m happy to have done it. I would like it to go somewhere. I would be silly if I didn’t. But, I think if I got a letter from somebody that I didn’t know, and it just said to me, “I got so much out of reading your book, and I just loved it.” Even if it was only one, that would make it feel worthwhile to me because it touched somebody.

Born: July 19, 1934; in Berwyn, IL Died: April 24, 2015; in Sandwich, IL Charles Allen “Chuck” Anderson, Sr., age 80, of Sandwich, formerly of Plainfield, IL, passed away suddenly, Friday, April 24, 2015, at Valley West Hospital of Sandwich, IL. Born July 19, 1934, in Berwyn, IL at home to the loving late parents, Charles and Grace Anderson. Cherished husband of Anne Anderson, nee Wiegerink, wedded for 51 3/4 years. Loving father of Chuck (Lisa Phillips) Anderson of New York, NY and Chad (Sharon, nee Wendel) Anderson of Sandwich, IL. Beloved grandpa of Hunter, Parker, Grace and Hazel Anderson. Dear brother of Edith Murphy and Peg McCown.

Preceded in death by his siblings LaMonte Peterson, Ruth Jensen, Raymond Cline, Betty Breneke, and Pearl Anderson.

Chuck was a 1952 graduate of Burlington High School, IA. He joined the U.S. Army and served in Fairbanks, Alaska from 1954-1956. After his service, he was a radio disc jockey for many stations in Missouri, Michigan, and WJRC in Joliet. He married the love of his life, Anne Wiegerink, June 29, 1963. Chuck was a 1967 graduate of Chicago State University, receiving his degree in special education.

In 1967-1975 he was a junior high school math teacher in Plainfield.

From 1975-1980 he was assistant principal of Plainfield High School.

1980-1993 he was Principal of Crystal Lawns Elementary School. In 1994 he was interim Principal of Walkers Grove Elementary. Chuck was known as the “Voice of Plainfield” announcing football and basketball games, and the Homecoming games for 28 years. He was 1990 teacher of the year. He received the CAPE award, 1991.

He has been a member of Plainfield United Methodist Church for many years. Chuck enjoyed playing bridge, traveling, and hanging out with his grandchildren. He was an avid longtime suffering Cubs fan!

Survived by her husband and best friend of 61 years, Antonio Brandolino; loving children, Fiore (Cindy), Tony (Rosanna), Linda (Joe); cherished grandchildren, Jeff (Tina), Daniel (fiancee Ali), Stephanie (fiance Sean), and Tyler; precious great grandchildren, Christian, Alyssa, Julius, Marco, Benjamin and Emma; sister, Mary Ann Alberico; brother, Joseph (Teresa) Alberico; in-laws, Francesco Carusi of Toronto Canada, Liberata (John) DiVecchio, Vince (Betty) Brandolino, Sam (Carol) Brandolino; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was a very faithful woman who loved God, her family and friends with all her heart, soul and mind.

Angie was a member of the Church of St. Anthony, Joliet. She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to so many. She loved when the family was together and always made sure there was plenty of homemade Italian food for everyone.

Angie was born in San Vittorino, Italy, emigrated in 1958 and became

a very proud American Citizen. She was a dedicated wife and mother who always put her family first. She worked for Al Baskin as a seamstress for 12 years. She loved to cook and enjoyed preparing meals for members of the American Italian Cultural Society (AICS) of which she was a founding member. She also enjoyed making the pasta sauce for the monthly AICS Spaghetti Dinners.

Angie was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia and fought a valiant battle for several years.

She received wonderful care from Dr. Shuo Ma her oncologist and the entire team at Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

The family would like to extend our sincere thanks and admiration for the loving care she received while at Northwestern. She was also assisted in her final days by Joliet Area Community Hospice who provided wonderful compassionate care while at home.

A celebration of Angiolina’s life will begin on Tuesday, April 28, 2015, with prayers in the funeral home chapel at 9:15 a.m. then driving in procession to St. Jude Catholic Church in Joliet for a Mass of Christian Burial to be held at 10:00 a.m. Entombment to follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be on Monday, April 27, 2015, at Tezak Funeral Home, 1211 Plainfield Road, Joliet from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Prayers will be offered at 7:00 p.m. by the American Italian Cultural Society.

Preceded in death by his parents, Erwin and Elizabeth (Pershey); and his sister, Betty; and brother-in-law, Bill Donnelly.

Survived by his best friend and wife of 66 years, Dorothy, nee Wendland.

He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Church, Joliet, graduating grade school there, and was a graduate of Joliet Catholic High School. Mac was employed by Formax Inc. of Mokena for 25 years as a buyer. Mac was a proud and active member of the Pershey family, attending innumerable family reunions throughout his 87 years.

He and Dorothy were avid travelers, visiting over 13 countries.

They also visited the majority of U.S. states, many of them in a motor home, sharing the adventures with his late friend, cousin, and business partner, Dennis Schneider and his wife Carmen. Many Friday and Saturday nights were spent raucously playing cards with long time friends, and now neighbors, Bruce and Geri Baxter. Mac loved family gatherings, friends, cooking out, music, beer, and a good time.

He took up running in his 50’s, after a heart attack, and continued running into his 70’s, even after heart bypass surgery in 1988. He was very proud of his bike ride across Illinois with a couple of his daughters when in his late 50’s, although it proved challenging to his children! He played a large part in all of his grandchildren’s lives, helping, along with Dorothy,

in any way possible at all times. He lived long enough to see his oldest grandson become a grandfather - no small feat!

Mac will be sorely missed by all, most of all by Dorothy. As Mac said, “I love her madly,” and as she said “When we met, my friends in Arkansas couldn’t believe I had such a handsome man in uniform seeing me, especially a Yankee!” They truly epitomized living up to the promise of remaining devoted to each other “through good times and bad, in sickness and in health.”

“May the road rise up to meet you.

May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand.”

Robert John Szucs, age 80, joined the angels on April 23, 2015. He was the loving son of the late John Szucs, Jr. and Bertha Elizabeth (n e Mekalski), born on February 27, 1935, in Cleveland, Ohio. He attended the University of Notre Dame and was a Cold War veteran of the U.S. Army.

An active member of St. Dennis parish, he is survived by his wife of nearly 54 years, Loretto Kathryn (n

e Dennis); four loving daughters, Juliana Szucs, Diana (John) Sullivan, Patricia (John) Stitz, and Laura (Dan) Pfeiffer; and ten adoring grandchildren, Madelon Smith, Ryan (Alison Nardini), Jaclyn and Jessica Sullivan, Lauren, Nolan and Claire Stitz, and Caroline, Anna and Kathryn Pfeiffer; and loving brother, James (Terri) Szucs, and sister, Judy (Guy Bruce) Barnby.

Following his army service at Fort Bliss, Texas, he married the love of his life after having to search for her phone number in an El Paso phone book using only the address where he had dropped her off after a group outing. After the wedding they moved to the Chicago area, then to Midlothian, Illinois, where they raised their family and he was president of the Midlothian Girls’ Softball League.

Bob worked as a design engineer for many years at Ingersoll Products, working his way up to become General Manager. He held numerous patents in the U.S. and internationally and was a member of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers. He retired in 1997 after 36 years of service to the company, but continued to work as a consultant for several years.

Bob was a trustee of Saint Joseph’s College, Rensselaer, Indiana, and a former board member of the Lockport Area Historical Society. He took great pride in his Polish and Hungarian ancestry and drew strength from his parents and grandparents, especially as he fought five kinds of cancer over a span of 21 years.

His surviving family draws strength from the courage and dignity with which he fought the disease making new friends in every doctor’s office, hospital, and clinic in which he was treated, meeting every challenge with determination, a smile, and wit.

Donald “Don” R. Leaman, age 85, passed away peacefully Friday, April 24, 2015, at his residence.

Born June 25, 1929, in Joliet, IL to his parents, Don and “Sis” Leaman. He graduated from Joliet Township High School in Joliet, IL. He married Betty Patterson in 1957.

The Leamans lived in Plainfield, IL where Don worked as an HVAC tradesman. He retired in 1985 and enjoyed international travel, fine dining and spending time with friends and family.

Mr. Leaman was a supporter of the arts, playing Spanish guitar and enjoying dramatic performances at theatres around Europe and the U.S. Survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Anita and Jeff Dziedzic of Oswego, IL; his son and daughterin-law, Donald Patrick and Mary Jo Leaman of of Concord, OH; three loving grandchildren, Hannah, Kara and Gianni; his brother, Dick (Marian) Leaman; sister, Sally (Jerry) Johnson; sister-in-law, Jane Leaman; his beloved companion, Karen Rebuehr; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Gerry.

Don is a veteran of the United States Army, serving in Germany during the Korean conflict.

Illinois GOP targets political hiring; Democrats wary

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Republicans have unveiled legislation backed by Gov. Bruce Rauner they say will clean up state hiring rules that allow a governor to hand out jobs to loyal lieutenants instead of hiring strictly on merit.

The measure, sponsored by Sen. Karen McConnaughay of St. Charles, is intended to rectify problems uncovered last year in a hiring scandal at the Illinois Department of Transportation under former Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn.

It defines the type of employee a governor may hire without restrictions, because he needs someone with a similar political affiliation to carry out his wishes.

The U.S. Supreme Court recognized the need for such allegiance to the boss among high-ranking policymakers. In a 1990 case from Illinois known as “Rutan,” the high court decreed, however, that most government jobs should be open to anyone who can show proper ability and skill.

But majority Democrats in the General Assembly are wary. The bulk of McConnaughay’s measure is devoted to limits placed on collective bargaining units, going so far as to remove some employees from labor unions and empowering the government to transfer or dismiss those found to have been improperly hired at IDOT. They warn that the bill could lead to more politics in state hiring.

The padded crib lining is intended to keep infants’ limbs from getting caught between crib bars and to protect them from bumping their heads against side rails. The American Academy of Pediatrics has warned that crib bumpers can cause infants to suffocate.

ISP investigates East St. Louis Housing Authority shooting

EAST ST. LOUIS – Illinois State

Police are investigating a shooting involving an East St. Louis Housing Authority police officer that left one man injured.

Capt. James Morrisey said security guards were investigating burglaries on Saturday around 1 p.m. at a complex when they encountered a 20-year-old man. He was shot by a Housing Authority officer and taken to a hospital. The man’s injuries aren’t considered life-threatening.

Cortez Slack is the chief of the Housing Authority’s police department. He said the shooting took place at John DeShields Homes. He said the officer has been put on paid administrative leave.

U of I spends $30K for Biden speech on sex assault

URBANA – Officials said the University of Illinois spent an estimated $30,000 to bring Vice President Joe Biden to campus as part of a White House campaign to reduce college sexual assaults.

The Champaign News-Gazette reported the expenses included lumber for temporary bleachers for Biden’s appearance on Thursday. But officials said the school’s plans to reuse that material will reduce net expenses to roughly $25,000.

University spokeswoman Robin Kaler said the chancellor’s office covered expenses for Biden’s visit, with no state or tuition money

being used.

Dog left for days inside Chicago animal control van

CHICAGO – Authorities said a dog was forgotten and left for several days inside a Chicago Animal Care and Control van.

City workers discovered the pit bull mix named Missy on Friday and called police.

Police said an Animal Care and Control employee left the dog inside the van. The dog was forgotten inside the vehicle after an adopt-a-dog event. But police said it appears accidental and no criminal charges are expected to be filed.

By BINAJ GURUBACHARYA and KATY DAIGLE The Associated Press KATHMANDU, Nepal – The death toll from Nepal’s earthquake rose to 3,218 on Monday, two days after the massive quake ripped across this Himalayan nation, leaving tens of thousands shellshocked and sleeping in streets.

Aid groups received the first word from remote mountain villages – reports that suggested many communities perched on mountainsides were devastated or struggling to cope.

Landslides hindered rescue teams that tried to use mountain trails to reach those in need, said Prakash Subedi, chief district official in the Gorkha region, where the quake was centered.

“Villages like this are routinely affected by landslides, and it’s not uncommon for entire villages of 200, 300, up to 1,000 people to be completely buried by rock falls,” said

Matt Darvas, a member of the aid group World Vision. “It will likely be helicopter access only.”

Saturday’s magnitude 7.8 earthquake spread horror from Kathmandu to small villages and to the slopes of Mount Everest, triggering an avalanche that buried part of the base camp packed with foreign climbers preparing to make their summit attempts.

At least 18 people died there, and 61 were injured.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Komal Singh Bam said Monday the death toll had risen to 3,218 people, but he gave no further details. Another 61 people were killed in neighboring India. China reported that 20 people had died in Tibet.

Kathmandu district chief administrator Ek Narayan Aryal said tents and water were being handed out Monday at 10 locations in Kathmandu, but that aftershocks were leaving everyone jittery.

“There have been nearly 100 earthquakes and after-

shocks, which is making rescue work difficult. Even the rescuers are scared and running because of them,” he said.

Tens of thousands spent the night sleeping in parks or on a golf course. Others camped in open squares lined by cracked buildings and piles of rubble.

“We don’t feel safe at all.

There have been so many aftershocks. It doesn’t stop,” said Rajendra Dhungana, 34, who spent the day with his niece’s family for her cremation at the Pashuputi Nath Temple in Katmandu. “I’ve watched hundreds of bodies burn.”

The capital city is largely a collection of small, poorly constructed brick apartment buildings. But outside of the oldest neighborhoods, many in Kathmandu were surprised by how few modern structures collapsed in the quake.

Aid workers also warned that the situation could be far worse near the epicenter.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered near Lamjung, about 50 miles northwest of Kathmandu.

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com The Illinois High School Association will not announce postseason pairings for boys volleyball until May 8, so there is still plenty of mystery as to who will have to beat whom to possibly represent the local area in state competition.

But one thing has become quite clear – all 16 squads from the area face very challenging playoff scenarios.

Most of the local teams will be competing in the Alton Sectional, which features regionals at Minooka and Lincoln-Way North as well as meets at Belleville West and Granite City.

A year ago, the sectional was at Bolingbrook, and it featured regionals at Joliet West and Plainfield North to go along with two St. Louis-area regionals.

But this season, the IHSA moved the Plainfield North field to the Oswego East Sectional, which includes six of the top 15 teams in the Chicago area.

That’s bad news for Plainfield North, which lost in last year’s sectional semifinals, and Bolingbrook, which has split with North thus far. Other area teams in that sectional are Lemont, Plainfield East and Romeoville.

Last year’s Joliet West Regional was quite challenging, but things appear to be even tougher this season.

Joliet Catholic improved to 17-1 after winning the Palatine Invitational, while Lockport won its 17th straight and moved to 23-2 after claiming top honors in the Minooka Invitational.

The Hilltoppers and Porters are the only two ranked teams in the Minooka Regional. But Joliet West is 15-5, Minooka is 10-6, and both Plainfield Central and Plainfield South are enjoying successful seasons.

Joliet Central also is in the regional field.

JCA rallied to beat Lockport in three sets earlier this season, so it has the upper hand right now for the top seed. Both Lockport and West defeated Minooka on Saturday; and, like the Porters, the

The Porters won all their matches Saturday in two sets and are playing with a great deal of confidence, with a recent win over Lincoln-Way East adding fuel to the fire.

will find out much more about his team this week when it plays Tuesday at Lincoln-Way Central and hosts unbeaten Lincoln-Way West on Thursday.

“I had high expectations this year, but the way that these guys are winning and carrying themselves is unreal,” Mraz said. “When we walk into the gym now, we expect to win every match. We know our capabilities and how far our talent can take us. So if we play like we did against Hinsdale Central (in the title match), the sky’s the limit for us.”

Beside the local rivalry, West was happy to get past Minooka in the fifth-place match Saturday because that gives it the edge over the Indians heading into the seeding meeting.

Tigers coach Jason Herrmann knows his squad faces a challenging schedule the next two weeks, meeting Lincoln-Way North and Lincoln-Way East this week and

Sandburg next. They don’t see Lockport until the end of the regular season.

“This was a good regional win for us,” Herrmann said.

“We lost Game 1, but we pushed through. We were down, 7-1, in Game 3 but showed a lot of resilience and a lot of heart. We fell short in pool play, losing our first match to Neuqua Valley in three. But we told them to stay positive and have fun, and they went 3-1 and beat two regional opponents.”

Minooka, which hosts Plainfield Central on Tuesday, has a young team, but coach Janel Grzetich hopes the Indians can put it together and benefit from hosting the regional.

“It’s turning into a competitive regional,” Grzetich said.

“Lockport has a real solid, allaround team with outstanding hitting and good ball control.

We could have played better against them, but I don’t want to take anything away from them. And we lost a tough one

to West in a very close match with a lot of back-and-forth rallies.”

While the Lincoln-Way schools have a bit easier path than they did at last year’s Marist Sectional, the regional at North figures to be a dogfight.

West is 16-0, Central is 16-5, North is 15-6 and East is 15-8.

Coach Brian Thorp’s Warriors are ranked second in the state heading into their big showdown with Lockport.

And although East graduated most of its starters from last year’s state championship squad, coach Kris Fiore’s team scored a big win last week over Sandburg, which upset previously top-ranked and unbeaten Glenbard West on Saturday at Brother Rice.

And then this weekend, the Lincoln-Way schools, JCA and Minooka join a top-notch field at Lincoln-Way East’s invitational, which may add some clarity on who the area’s best team is.

When Wayne King began coaching baseball at Joliet Junior College 29 years ago, it was hands-on.

“In my younger days, I’d try to catch every ground ball, throw every pitch, take every swing with the kids,” he said. “Now, I know to just let it happen.”

The constant is that King’s methods have produced winners. A member of the National Junior College Athletic Association Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame, he entered the weekend with a 1,002-631-1 record at JJC. That’s about 35 victories a season.

The milestone 1,000th came April 19 in an 11-3 win over Milwaukee Area Tech.

“I’m happy I did this at one school,” King said. “I’m really proud that we gathered all the wins right here at JJC.” Also the JJC athletic director the past 25 years, King guided the Wolves to Division III (nonscholarship) national championships in 1994, 2008 and 2012, national runner-up finishes in 1995 and 2007, and third-place finishes in 1997 and 2006. He has taken 11 teams to the World Series.

The field on campus where he has had so many victories bears his name.

“I’m pretty proud of getting 1,000,” King said. “It shows I have had good people to work with. I’ve gotten calls or emails from a majority of the coaches and players who were with me through the years. So many were a part of this.

“We’ve been fortunate.

For a nonscholarship school, we have gotten good players, and a majority were local kids that nobody really knew about. I’m happy about not having to go too far away to get good players.”

“I think baseball is the same game now as when I started here, but it’s taught differently with the videos, the stick figures, the images,” King said. “The game has changed because the kids changed. There are so many more options for them. It’s a little different than it was my first few years here.

“I’ve made some adjustments in my coaching, and there are some things I have refused to adjust on. I’ve got to be a psychologist sometime. There are 26-28 kids on the team, and you have to learn what motivates each one. I think I did that pretty well.”

What he also has done well is prepare his players for life after JJC. If they are interested in continuing their baseball careers at fouryear schools, he helps make it happen.

“I’m really proud to be able to get them out of here and into four-year programs, anywhere from Division I down to Division III,” King said. “They’re quality kids who can play and understand the game.

“We have contacts all over

the country. It’s strongest in the Midwest, but the South more recently has been reaching up to all the Illinois junior colleges. I’ve been here 29 years, so there’s some stability in our program, and coaches at four-year schools respect the good situation we have here.”

WEARING TWO HATS

To be a head coach and athletic director may on the surface seem too much for one person to handle. King explained why it’s a natural for him.

“If I were the head coach in a fall or winter sport, I would be too busy to be the AD,” King acknowledged.

“But in our case, we have only baseball and softball in the spring. That’s the perfect scenario, coaching baseball and being the AD. I would imagine that will remain the same when they hire my successor.”

Besides, baseball sometimes acts as a buffer when things get harried in the athletic director’s chair.

“There’s nothing stagnant about this game. Every day is different,” King said. “Some-

times, I could be having a bad day as athletic director, and I get out there with the kids and everything is OK.” Of course, having good assistant coaches has made wearing two hats more comfortable for King.

“How lucky I am to have an assistant like Gregg Braun,” he said. “I’ve been fortunate to have a full-time assistant the last 18 or 19 years. Mark Smith coached with me 14 years, and now he has developed his own little program at Providence.

Jason Vitas spent some time with me, too, and now he’s at Providence.

“The guys who played for me and coached with me, I’m proud of their success in baseball and in life. Those types of things are why you coach. You help kids grow and mature and then see them have success in life.”

A PEEK AHEAD

From a win-loss standpoint, JJC is not having its best season under King. Still, there could be good times ahead.

The Wolves entered the weekend 24-18 overall and

14-4 and contending in the North Central Community College Conference as the regular season winds down.

King said he has talked with his wife, Janine, about retirement, but that’s at least a few years away.

“My wife and I were talking about me coaching maybe three or four more years, five at the longest,” King said. “I’d like to be able to experience retirement. But we’ll have new athletic field houses here in 2017, and I’d like to experience that. At different times, I wish retirement was here, and at other times, I wish this would go on forever.

“My wife has been tremendous through my time here.

We want to travel the country when I retire – maybe get a nice trailer that’s pulled behind – I think they call it the fifth wheel. We’ve been talking about living in Ohio when I retire. We’re both from there.”

First, however, there’s more to do at JJC. The next milestone is No. 1,100.

In the opener, sophomore Carly Jaworski (Lemont) went 4 for 4 including her seventh home run. Carolyn Nojiri and Frankie Rys each had two hits and an RBI. Brittany Russell went 2 for 2, and Kaylee Prieto drove in two runs. Kelly Bowler (Lockport, 14-12) pitched a three-hitter with six strikeouts.

Ryan Fox (5-4) extended his scoreless streak to 17 innings for visiting Lewis (21-21, 1517) in the opener of the GLVC doubleheader Sunday. The game was scheduled for seven innings and went nine. Fox

yielded six hits and no walks while striking out four. Ethan Bloom singled in the ninth, Neal Tyrell (Minooka) also singled, and the run scored when Joe Sparacio (Plainfield Central) reached on an error by the right fielder. Tyrell tripled earlier.

Hampton says Bears should target Cooper

WOODSTOCK – In posing his question, Hub Arkush reminded Dan Hampton that the Bears were looking for the best player available when they drafted him fourth overall in the 1979 draft. But when Hampton took the microphone to discuss the Bears’ No. 7 pick in Thursday’s NFL draft, it was clear the Hall of Famer had a specific player in mind.

“I want them to get Amari Cooper from Alabama,” Hampton said Saturday night at Offsides Sports Bar and Grill. “We see how much a dynamic receiver can change the complexion of an offense, the fear factor in defenses in the NFL today. Look around the league: When you see wide receivers, high first-round picks, and they are not only

The party also included a meet and greet with 1985 Bears players Hampton, Steve McMichael and Otis Wilson and a performance from the trio’s band, Chicago 6.

In discussing Cooper, Hampton noted that last year’s Bears featured Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Marshall, who boasted similar skill sets.

The team traded Marshall in March, and Hampton said he believes the team has an opening to introduce a new dynamic on offense.

“He has the speed that will allow Alshon to become even more valuable in the secondary,” Hampton said of Cooper.

“I don’t think he’s a receiver that you say he’s going to be an all-time great, but those

two guys together could be mighty scary.”

Gabriel said he didn’t think Cooper would be available to the Bears at No. 7, but mentioned West Virginia wide receiver Kevin White and Clemson linebacker Vic Beasley as other possibilities at that spot.

“If none of those guys are there, they may decide to trade down,” Gabriel said.

Hub Arkush said the best player available at No. 7 might be an offensive lineman: Stanford’s Andrus Peat or Iowa’s Brandon Scherff.

Other topics of discussion on the panel, which was moderated by Shaw Media senior sports writer Joe Stevenson, included whether the Bears needed to start thinking about replacing Matt Forte, whether Jay Cutler could evolve into a leader and what will change under coach John Fox’s regime.

White Sox rally for 2nd Sunday win vs. Royals The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Conor Gillaspie hit a two-run single in the White Sox’s five-run sixth inning, and they rallied to beat Kansas City, 5-3, for their second win Sunday against the Royals.

The day began with Avisail Garcia’s two-out RBI single sending the Sox to a 3-2 victory in the resumption of a game suspended by rain Friday night. Then, an error on Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas helped the Sox chase Edinson Volquez on the way to just their second win in six games this season against the Royals.

John Danks (1-2) pitched six innings of three-run ball while improving to 8-1 in 18 career starts against Kansas City. David Robertson (2-0) got three outs for his third save in three opportunities after he tossed a scoreless inning for the win in the suspended game.

Alex Gordon hit a two-run homer for Kansas City in the regularly scheduled matchup. Gordon, a fourtime Gold Glove winner in left, also made a pair of nice defensive plays, including an outstanding leaping grab on Micah Johnson’s foul liner into the stands in the sixth.

Volquez (2-2) was charged with one earned run and five hits in 5 2-3 innings. The right-hander pitched at least seven innings and allowed three runs or less in each of his first three starts with Kansas City.

After Gordon’s sparkling catch leading off the sixth, the next five batters reached for the Sox. Moustakas’ error on Jose Abreu’s grounder allowed Adam Eaton to score, and Adam LaRoche’s RBI single trimmed Kansas City’s lead to 3-2.

Alexei Ramirez then struck out swinging, but Gillaspie’s hit put the Sox in front, and Tyler Flowers added an RBI single against Jason Frasor that made it 5-3.

Russell’s bases-loaded double leads Cubs over Reds, 5-2

CINCINNATI – Rookie Addison Russell finished his first week in the majors with his biggest hit yet.

The youngest player in the National League doubled with the bases loaded, and the Cubs held on for a 5-2 victory Sunday and a sweep of their rain-shortened series against the Cincinnati Reds.

The 21-year-old second baseman was in a slump when he broke the game open with his three-run double in the fourth inning off Anthony DeSclafani (2-1). Russell was called up on Tuesday and was only 2 for 19 with 11 strikeouts heading into that at-bat.

“I’m just understanding this whole process,” Russell said. “It may be overnight, it may take a few games, it may take a few at-bats.”

The Cubs are 10-7 under first-year manager Joe Maddon, their best start since 2008 when they went 11-6 and won the division that year.

Newgarden claims first Kurt Busch leads 291 laps in dominating Richmond victory win not far from home

By HANK KURZ Jr. The Associated Press RICHMOND, Va. – Kurt Busch has spent time this year in a Delaware courtroom, then on NASCAR’s sidelines as he served a threerace suspension for an alleged domestic assault on a former girlfriend.

Now, he has made a trip to Kurt Busch Victory Lane, where Busch hoped his victory Sunday at Richmond International Raceway will help him close one of the messiest chapters of his volatile career.

“Standing on the truth the whole time, that gave me the feeling of when I do get back to the car, it’s going to be easy to focus, and I think I’ve shown that,” said Busch, who still has a no-contact order against him

that was issued in February by a Delaware Family Court judge. The judge ruled Busch likely assaulted ex-girlfriend Patricia Driscoll in September.

The 2004 series champion dominated the rain-delayed NASCAR Sprint Cup race originally set for Saturday night.

The Stewart-Haas Racing driver led a career-best 291 of the 400 laps on the 0.75-mile oval, outrunning teammate Kevin Harvick over the final dozen laps to end a 35-race winless streak.

Earlier in his return, he said he was trying too hard.

“I think I might have been driving too hard, too much of a chip on my shoulder, so to speak,” he said, adding he realized last weekend there is danger in driving along the line that separates effectively aggressive and overly aggressive.

“We’re winners in April.

It feels good,” he said. “Plenty of time to do fun things to build the team up, get stronger, learn from all these races coming up and continue to go forward.”

Harvick finished in the top two for the seventh time in nine races but said he had to rally after his car struggled on one set of tires.

The race looked much like the Xfinity Series event Friday night in which Denny Hamlin led 248 of 250 laps and only lost the lead during green flag pits stops. This time, there were actual green flag lead changes, but only two – when Busch passed Joey Logano after 94 laps to take the lead, and when Jamie McMurray passed Busch after 262 laps.

The Associated Press BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Josef Newgarden held off a hard-charging Graham Rahal on Sunday in the Indy Grand Prix of Alabama for his first IndyCar Series win.

Newgarden got his milestone win at Barber Motorsports Park a few hours from his hometown of Hendersonville, Tennessee, with most of the major drama coming behind him.

Rahal finally slipped past Scott Dixon on the final lap after several tries, giving the American drivers a 1-2 finish.

Dixon had his sixth podium finish in as many years in Alabama at No. 3. He picked up the 36th win of his career last week at Long Beach, moving into sole possession of fifth place in the series. He still couldn’t quite

break through in Alabama.

Newgarden had posted second-place finishes in each of the past two years before finally finishing up front for CFH Racing, a merger of Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing and Ed Carpenter Racing.

He’d gotten off to a good start with a seventh-place finish last weekend at Long Beach.

Rahal’s strong finish Sunday, meanwhile, gave Honda a boost after Chevrolet fielded the seven fastest cars in qualifying, with Team Penske sweeping the top three.

Rahal flirted with his first victory since becoming the youngest IndyCar winner in 2008 at 19 years old and picked up considerable ground in the final laps.

He made an outside pass of Ryan-Hunter Reay with 10 laps to go, went by pole-sitter Helio Castroneves and then took on Dixon, the veteran from New Zealand.

Students sometimes ask, “I find discarding difficult. What should I do?”

The naive answer is: Throw losers and keep winners. But discards should send information to partner. If you are pitching from a suit not yet led by either side, your card is an attitude signal -- as in this deal.

South opens and closes the auction with three spades. West starts the defense with three rounds of hearts. East plays high-low to show his doubleton, but what should he discard at trick three?

Assuming the third heart is standing up, South presumably has 7-3-2-1, 7-3-1-2, 7-3-3-0 or 7-3-0-3 shape. In the first three cases, East wants partner to shift to a diamond at trick four, not a club. Dear Dr. K: I’m trying to eat better, but breakfast has me stumped. Could you share some ideas for a healthy, balanced breakfast?

Dear reader: Eating a small, nutritious breakfast is a great way to jumpstart the day. Yet many people skip breakfast because they are in a rush, aren’t hungry or are trying to cut calories. That’s a mistake because eating a healthful breakfast has benefits.

Studies suggest eating breakfast regularly can reduce the risk of high cholesterol and decrease insulin resistance. (Insulin resistance increases the risk of Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.) People who regularly eat breakfast perform better on tests of memory than those who don’t. That doesn’t prove eating breakfast every day improves your memory, but it’s plausible that it could.

Regularly eating breakfast also minimizes impulse snacking and overeating at other meals, and boosts your intake of essential nutrients. It can help keep your weight in check. There’s some evidence eating a certain number of calories at breakfast is less likely to cause weight gain than eating that same amount of calories at dinner.

Keep your breakfast moderate in size and focus on produce and whole grains. Minimize full-fat dairy products, breakfast potatoes and meats.

Another tip: Boil or poach eggs instead of frying them to avoid a lot of extra calories.

To create a healthy, balanced breakfast, include three food groups: lean protein, whole-grain carbohydrates and fruit.

Veggies are great, too, but most people aren’t in the habit of eating them in the morning. I’ll admit the only time I have vegetables at breakfast is when they’re folded into an omelet. Because of saturated fat and other unhealthy

Dear Abby: Last year I had bariatric surgery.

Since the surgery I have lost a significant amount of weight and still have a lot to go before I reach my goal weight. In the beginning, my husband was supportive and seemed proud of my weight loss. But he is no longer as physically interested in me now as he was when I was considerably larger.

Dear Abby: My brother is older than I am and has been in and out of prison.

He has stolen my things and pawned them.

I am married, and my husband and I are expecting our first child. We live in a time zone several hours behind the one my family is in. I am now receiving phone calls at 4 o’clock in the morning from collection agencies on the hunt for my brother.

He has been writing bad checks and leaving my phone number as a contact number.

I have managed to determine who his probation officer is, and I’m on the fence about whether I should tell her what he is up to. My dad is furious with me for even considering it since “brothers and sisters don’t do that to each other.”

Honestly, I am fed up with this “blood is thicker than water” mentality when it comes to my brother’s wrongdoings. He is now including my family in his schemes, and I won’t stand for it any longer.

Nonresidential customers with larger electric loads (greater than 100 kW) have a wide range of electric load characteristics in addition to electricity supply costs that cannot be estimated; therefore, the overall effect of the updated delivery service rates on an electric bill for such customers cannot be determined.

The updated delivery service rates include ComEd's updated costs of delivering electricity through its distribution system and apply to all ComEd customers independent of whether electricity supply is pro-

cured and provided by ComEd or by a third party (i.e., a Retail Electric Supplier). These updated rates will take effect beginning with the first day of the January 2016 monthly billing period.
