Labor leaders, environmental groups advocate for clean energy

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Local labor leaders and environmental groups joined state lawmakers Wednesday in Joliet to discuss the need for more renewable energy development in Illinois – a move Pat McGuire they say could D-Joliet spur job growth and bolster the state’s clean energy economy.

“There’s a lot of demand for green jobs in Illinois, and Illinois has the natural resources to provide those jobs, said Michael Clemmons, assistant training director for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 176. “We have the wind. We have the sun. We have what we need to make that happen. Maybe where we lack is the skills and training of the workforce.”

The meeting was organized by local legislators looking for changes in the state energy law to provide more incentives for the renewable energy industry.

State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, also attended the roundtable discussion on Wednesday at IBEW Local 176 in Joliet.

He said Will County already plays a strong role as an “energy powerhouse” when it comes to traditional forms of energy such as oil and coal, but Will County needs to be a leader in renewable energy such as wind farms and solar paneling.

“Renewable energy is where it’s at,” McGuire said.

Wednesday’s conversation focused on pending legislation that would tweak the state’s clean energy law, first passed in 2007. Current law requires Illinois to step up its renewable energy efforts so that at least 25 percent of the state’s

power come from clean sources by 2025.

Because of a “hiccup” in the law, the $52.7 million currently sitting in the state’s clean energy fund cannot be touched unless the investment is made on behalf of Ameren and ComEd customers, said Jack Darin, director for the Sierra Club’s Illinois Chapter.

The existing language has essentially put a stop to future development, Darin said, because most customers now buy power through alternative suppliers. When the law was first written, most contracted with ComEd and Ameren utilities for their power, he said.

Clemmons said the hope is that more innovative projects will find their way to Will County and provide opportunity for green jobs. One example of such a project is the solar vehicle charging station at Bill Jacobs Auto Group in Joliet. It was built in 2012.

JOLIET – Virgil Kemp, like most of us, views anyone who throws trash from their car as rude and ignorant.

“But they don’t know any better. Then there’s the people who see litter and do nothing. I think that’s worse,” said Kemp, a Joliet resident who in 2009 started Helpers of Mother Earth, a group solely devoted to picking up litter. HOME has done more than 250 cleanups in the Joliet area during the past four years.

HOME recruits members through meetup.com and Facebook. In recent weeks, group members have cleaned up different spots off Washington Street on the east side.

“It’s a never-ending battle in this area,” Kemp said. “We had to go longer between cleanups [in the fall and spring] because of the weather. This year, it was really, really bad.”

The heaviest snowfall in years and the amount of time temperatures kept it on the ground meant a lot of litter has been recently uncovered on city streets and local interstates.

Spokesman Guy Tridgell said the colder weather meant Illinois Department of Transportation work crews also got a late start cleaning up along Interstates 55 and 80.

After snow removal, the 23 maintenance yards in northeastern Illinois are responsible for pothole repair and litter pickup.

“The potholes required immediate attention and were the first priority, but now we’ve ramped up our cleanup efforts,” Tridgell said.

Tridgell said crews haven’t reported overwhelming amounts of litter, but there is more to clean up because of weather delays.

HOME members bring old shopping bags to collect garbage and separate glass, plastic and cans to recycle. Kemp asks neighboring residents if

the group can use their recycle bins after a cleanup or has members take the recycling home.

Sara Seskauskas of Lemont signed up this month to become a HOME volunteer.

She said it was the closest volunteer environmental group she could find. Kemp said he

appreciated her coming out to a cleanup right after joining.

He feels several of the 100-plus members signed up to “feel good about themselves” but haven’t actually participated in any of the events.

“You have to live by example and actually do it,” Seskauskas said.

Angel Franco, 15, a Joliet Central student, has learned to go over the same area a few times while picking up trash.

Boater makes discovery on I&M Canal

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A casual discovery by a Joliet boater could turn into an important archaeological find on the Illinois & Michigan Canal.

Wayne Barnett has uncovered remnants of a canal derrick crane and two intact canal-era wooden barges in and alongside the waterway at U.S. 6 and Brandon Road.

“We truly believe this could be one on the most significant sites ever discovered on the canal,” Barnett said during a presentation Wednesday at the Joliet Area Historical Museum.

Barnett said he owns a 40foot sailboat that he has stored over the winter in the Rockdale area for the past six or seven years.

“I would work on the boat and each time I did I noticed a couple pieces of junk laying around,” Barnett said. “Each time I noticed it, it got more and more interesting.”

Inspired, Barnett and a team of volunteers last year hauled the 32-foot-long double-masted derrick out of the muck.

“The significance of that crane cannot be overemphasized because none seem to exist along the canal now,” Barnett told about 30 residents, historians and officials who attended the presentation.

Army Corps nears last phase of project

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will enter the last phase of a nearly decade-long project to renovate the Lockport lock and dam.

About $12 million will be used to construct a replacement forebay wall at the lock and dam that holds water used in the functioning of the lock. The site of the lock and dam is two miles southwest of Lockport.

The project itself, which has been ongoing for about 10 years, has cost $150 million so far, said Michael Tarpey, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project manager. He said the project is expected to finish in 2016.

“We’re repairing an old

structure to ensure safety and long-term reliability,” he said.

The lock and dam is 110 feet wide by 600 feet long, according to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

According to state lawmakers, the procedure will reinforce and modernize existing infrastructure. It also will help to prevent a catastrophic failure of the wall and better protect the local community from the flood.

The lock opened in 1933 and was one of five designed and partially constructed by state workers between 1923 and 1930. The lock and dam was about 97 percent complete when construction was turned over to the federal government because of state financial difficulties.

U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs, said this project will protect the local community from any flooding of the retention wall that holds back the water for the lock.

The overall project is needed to maintain waterway navigation and keep the community safe, he said.

The project will improve the waterway system, Lipinski said. According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, about $81 billion in goods are shipped through Illinois waterways and ports, which support about 48,190 jobs.

“The Lockport lock and dam has needed renovation in order to enable it to continue to operate so the shipping can go through there,” Lipinski said.

Minooka Village Public can safely dispose of Board OKs budget prescription drugs Saturday

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Proposed revenues in the village of Minooka are set to increase in fiscal year 2015.

That increase will be by nearly $200,000 over the last fiscal year, according to John Harrington, Minooka Finance Director.

“The difference in the revenues and expenditures will be funded by transfers or carry-over monies, such as bond proceeds, and capital funds from the current fiscal year,” Village Administrator Dan Duffy told the board at Tuesday night’s Village Board meeting.

In the General Fund, the major operating fund of the village, the expenditures are $5,402,400, a 7.8 percent increase from last year’s budget, and the expected revenues are $5,475,400, a 7.3 percent increase from the last budget.

“The village has an excess

of revenue over expenses before transfers of $73,000 for fiscal year 2015,” Duffy said.

Capital projects budgeted to be continued into the next fiscal year include the Village Hall renovation, Minooka Road bridge construction, Grainger Way signage and the GIS Mapping system.

New projects include Arbor Lakes pond aerators, the 2014 motor fuel tax program, Wildey Road tar and chip roadwork, North Wabena Avenue sidewalk replacement, McEvilly Road drainage ditchwork and a water main replacement at Minooka Road and Shady Oaks Drive.

Out of the fiscal year 2015 budget, the village will replace two police squad cars and a Ford 450 truck.

“I feel that this is a sound fiscal plan for the village for the next fiscal year,” Harrington wrote in a memo to the board.

The board unanimously approved the budget.

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – A contract to renovate a stadium at Lockport Township High School District 205 was approved by board members Tuesday.

A bid from Team REIL, Inc., which will be the lead contractor for the project, was approved by board members in March. The roughly $1.6 million project is expected to be completed by early August.

District Superintendent Todd Wernet said the project would involve the replacement of the track and – for the first time – replacement of the grass field with synthetic turf. School

officials had looked into neighboring schools and found they had synthetic turf, he said.

The contract approved by board members stipulated what work will be done under the project.

“What it does is outline all the specs regarding what is expected,” Wernet said about the contract. “From excavation, preparation, drainage and where the materials are going to be taken.”

School officials have wanted to renovate the stadium so it can be used not only for athletes but other students, as well, Wernet said.

Water agency set to re-file suit

By RYAN TERRELL rterrell@shawmedia.com The Northern Will County Water Agency is preparing to re-file its eminent domain suit to take control of the water pipeline owned by private utility American Lake Water Company.

Four of the agency’s five member communities have approved an ordinance that addresses “procedural” issues with the first lawsuit, according to agency attorney Jim Boan, clearing the way for the suit to be re-filed.

The lawsuit attempts to take control of the 30-mile Bedford Park transmission line used

by Illinois American Water to bring water from Bedford Park to the southwest suburbs, including the five towns in the agency, via eminent domain.

The Woodridge Village Board voted narrowly – 4 to 2 – in March to approve a revised intergovernmental agreement with the water agency. Woodridge Trustees Greg Abbott and Mike Martinez were vocal in their opposition to Woodridge’s role in the agency.

The ordinance allows each of the agency’s member towns to be listed as individual plaintiffs in the eminent domain suit. Previously, the suit listed only the agency’s name – an issue that could have been a potential legal argument for American Lake Water Company, according to Boan.

The effort is in response to continued water rate hikes from Illinois American Water – a sister company of American Lake Water – that have brought the cost of water to “unprece-

dented levels,” according to the agency.

Obtaining ownership of the pipeline from the privately owned water company would “eliminate the profit motive inherent in private ownership,” the lawsuit states.

Illinois American Water in turn contends that the water agency has cost taxpayers “over $1 million” in growing legal costs. The company has challenged the water agency to present a business plan for water services that would result in lower rates.

The company in an emailed statement questioned the water agency’s accountability.

“Eminent domain will continue to be a time-consuming, expensive process for all communities involved, as we have said for the past seven years.

We continue to disagree with the course of action the agency has chosen to take because it’s not in the best interests of our customers,” the statement read.

Robert Leon Russell, Sr. Born January 23, 1937 in Bessemer, Alabama, Theodore J. “Ted” to the late A.C. Planinsek, age 59, Russell and Rosa Lee lifelong area Russell. He accepted Christ at an resident, died early age. Robert moved to Joliet in Tuesday, April 15, 1970, and joined Mt. Zion 2014, following a Missionary Baptist Church under lingering illness. the leadership of the late Pastor Ted is preceded in death by his Isaac Singleton, Sr. He passed parents, Irene (Chaloka) and away on April 19, 2014 Theodore M. Gina is survived by her devoted daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly A. and John P. Gordon; one loving granddaughter, Haley Marie TatroReichardt; a special niece, Colette (Chris) Wagner; and the loves of her life, the family dogs, Maximus and Hannah Gordon. Several nieces, nephews and other family members survive.

Preceded in death by her former husband, Harry L. Tatro Jr.; her parents, Louis and Marie (Tierney) Stanger; and a very faithful canine companion, Samantha Jo Gordon.

Gina was born December 17, 1944 in Joliet. She grew up in Mokena, and was a long time resident of New Lenox, before moving to Minooka with her family in 2004.

A special thank you to Joliet Hospice, especially her nurse, Kathy Hafner, whose care and compassion for Gina will not be forgotten. Gina's family would also like to give a very special thank you to her great niece-in-law, Jessica Gordon, for helping Gina's family care for her during her illness.

Dominic was a cement finisher and on May 4, 1966 was elected trustee for Local 297. He was elected Vice President in 1972, and was elected President in 1975. He was a member of the Queen of Holy Rosary Church in LaSalle, Cement Masons Local 297, life member of the NRA, and LaSalle VFW. He is survived by one daughter, Nancy (Tom) Herron of Joliet; one son, Dominic (Kathleen) Visione of Edwards; 5 grandchildren, Maggie Marincic, Dominic “Bruno” Visione, Jake Herron, Michael “Sonny” Visione and Adam Herron.

He was an avid fisherman, hunter and motorcyclist.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Michael Visione.

Pallbearers will be Bruno Visione, Sonny Visione, Jake Herron, Adam Herron, Eddie Collins and Bill Peradotti.

By DON BABWIN The Associated Press MAYWOOD – Ruth Rodriguez didn’t want to believe her brother was one of more than 30 young men and boys John Wayne Gacy lured into his Chicago-area house and strangled, but she was willing to provide her DNA to find out.

She and her father gave authorities samples as part of an effort to identify eight of Gacy’s victims more than two years ago and learned none of the remains were those of her sibling, 22-year-old Edward Beaudion who went missing in 1978.

Eventually, the work done in the Gacy probe did help provide the family with some answers they had long awaited: Beaudion’s remains were those found in a forest preserve by hikers in 2008. And his killer was a small-time Missouri crook named Jerry Jackson who died last year.

On Wednesday, Rodriguez and her 86-year-old father, Louis Beaudion, appeared with Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart to announce the news.

“My mom went to her grave in 2001 not knowing where my brother was,” the sister said.

Authorities don’t know exactly how Beaudion died because his skull was never found. But Dart explained what investigators do know.

Weeks later, Jackson was taken into custody in Caruthersville, Mo., after he was found driving the car, which Beaudion’s family had reported stolen. Jackson was trying to sell stolen items at a pawnshop, Dart said.

Chicago, where police said he told them he had met Beaudion in downtown Chicago on the day the man disappeared and knocked him unconscious with a punch to the face during an altercation. Police said he told them he stuffed Beaudion’s body in the car, drove to a wooded area about 15 miles southwest of Chicago and dumped it.

But when he took police to the area, the search came up

The McDonough County Voice reports Quinn said Wednesday that he immediately ordered an audit. He says the agency has done an investigation.

The issue could become a re-election hurdle for Quinn.

Then in 2008, hikers found a partial skeleton in a forest preserve – in the same general area where Jackson had taken police years before – but the investigation went nowhere.

The bones, one of which had an orthopedic screw in it, were taken to the county medical examiner’s office.

Three years later, Dart’s office exhumed eight of Gacy’s unidentified victims from the 1970s to test DNA. Dart asked relatives of young men who disappeared at the time of Gacy’s killings to submit DNA samples for comparison.

The second call they received in response to their request came from Rodriguez.

Not only was her brother the age of many of Gacy’s victims, but the family’s home was just a few miles from Gacy’s.

Meanwhile, sheriff’s detective Jason Moran was working with the medical examiner’s office to clean up the operation in the wake of revelations about stacked bodies and remains tossed haphazardly in boxes. Dart said the medical examiner’s office did send some bones out for testing but “failed to look in one closet” where Beaudion’s bones were stored.

Ultimately, the medical examiner’s office shipped the unidentified bones to the same lab where Moran had sent DNA samples of Beaudion’s relatives in the Gacy case. And earlier this year, the lab reported a “genetic association” between those bones and DNA from Beaudion’s relatives, who also confirmed he’d had an orthopedic screw in his knee.

Beaudion is the latest of at least three people whose remains have been identified as part of the Gacy investigation.

By DON BABWIN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Inside a dusty, dimly lit chamber of steel catwalks, Darryl Wilson peers out a square hole and into one of baseball’s most revered shrines.

For 23 years, Wilson has been a scoreboard operator at Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs. Running the tall, green manual scoreboard is one of the most unique jobs in baseball – or anywhere – and it’s a symphony of the senses.

Each run and every inning, there is a flurry of activity and cacophony of noise inside as scoreboard operators yank metal plates with numbers on them out of the scoreboard and slam others into place.

The room suddenly fills with what sounds like a thousand angry bees. This is the result of a finger pressing a button in the far-off press box behind home plate that sends an electrical charge into a panel of half ball-shaped “targets,” causing specific ones to flip so that they add up to form the

number of the batter, and the number of balls, strikes and outs.

About the only thing that’s changed – besides the green paint to cover what was a white scoreboard when it was erected in 1937 – is that the scores coming in from, say, Baltimore or St. Louis no longer arrive via a tickertape machine that once spat out reams of paper. They now pop up on the screen of a laptop computer that’s a bit out of place atop a dusty counter near Wilson’s duct-taped seat.

“I feel unique,” said Wilson, who works the upper reaches of the scoreboard, tracking games around the majors and changing scores and pitchers’ uniform numbers when managers in those games bring in relievers.

“When they made it a [historic] landmark, I’m like, I guess I’m a landmark, too.”

With Boston’s Fenway Park and Wrigley the only stadiums in the majors with manual scoreboards, Wilson’s job is all but extinct.

From his small window, Wilson has watched some of baseball’s greatest sluggers step into the batter’s box, which explains why things occasionally back up a bit. He saw Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa’s home run duel, for example.

“No scores would go up when those guys come up to bat because you knew there was going to be some monster home runs coming,” he said, smiling.

He also had a clear view of perhaps Wrigley’s most infamous moment when a fan deflected a foul ball that seemed destined for left fielder Moi-

ses Alou’s glove in the 2003 playoffs. Wilson won’t say if he thought Alou would have caught the ball or whether Steve Bartman changed the course of history.

But he does speak of the collective shudder that went through the stands as everyone seemed to understand that the Cubs’ World Series drought would continue.

“It took the air right out of us,” he said.

Wilson has occasionally put a number where it didn’t belong, though he said his biggest blunder came after he raised the American flag and got a call from a friend wondering if the country was in distress.

“I looked up and the flag was upside down,” he said.

The job can be exhausting, particularly on hot days when temperatures are 10-15 degrees higher inside the scoreboard. But he loves the job he’s had for 23 of his 48 years and has no plans to give it up.

“Just to hear the crowd and all that, it kind of gives you an excited feeling,” he said.

WASHINGTON – Spurred by a series of fiery train crashes, a push by government and industry to make safer tank cars used for shipping crude oil and ethanol has been bogged down in squabbling and finger-pointing over whether they’re needed and if so, who should pay.

The Department of Transportation, worried about the potential for catastrophic accidents involving oil and ethanol trains that are sometimes as many as 100 cars long, is drafting new tank-car regulations aimed at making the cars less likely to spill their contents in the event of a crash. But final rules aren’t expected until late this year at the earliest, and it is common for such government rulemaking to drag on for years.

The freight railroad industry proposed tougher tank-car standards last fall, and recently upped its proposal another notch. The government and the Association of American Railroads say oil being shipped from the booming Bakken region of North Dakota and Montana may be more volatile than previously thought.

But oil companies – which own or lease the tank cars, and would have to bear much of the cost of tougher standards – want to stick to voluntary standards agreed to by both industries three years ago unless it can be shown that new standards are needed, American Petroleum Institute officials said. The railroads, they say, are refusing to share the “scientific basis” for their proposal.

The Petroleum Institute wants “a comprehensive examination” of changes proposed by the rail industry, including whatever computer modeling was used to support tougher standards so that it can be peer reviewed, said Brian Straessle, a spokesman for the institute.

“So far, no data has been provided,” he said.

The railroads are “pulling this out of thin air,” said Eric Wohlschlegel, another petroleum institute official.

By MARTHA MENDOZA and OSKAR GARCIA The Associated Press HONOLULU – Long flights can leave anyone a little unsteady, but a teenager who defied the odds, surviving a flight from California to Hawaii tucked in a jetliner’s wheel well, was disoriented, thirsty and could barely walk after the freezing, low-pressure ordeal, airport officials said Wednesday.

Security video of his arrival shows the 15-year-old boy dangling his feet for about 15 seconds from the wheel well before jumping 8 to 10 feet to the ground, landing on his feet and immediately collapsing Sunday morning, Maui District Airport Manager Marvin Moniz said.

Staggering toward the front of the plane, the soft-spoken boy in a San Francisco Giants hoodie asked a ramp agent for a drink of water, setting in motion federal and local law enforcement investigations,

national calls for better airport security and a flurry of speculation about how anyone could survive such a perilous trip.

Abdilahi Yusuf Abdi, who said he is the boy’s father, told Voice of America Wednesday that his son – who is still hospitalized in Honolulu – missed Africa, where they used to live, and had been struggling in school.

Abdi said he learned of the perilous journey Sunday when he got a call from police in Hawaii, but he couldn’t understand how he got to Maui and asked them to contact the San Jose Police Department.

“When I watched the analysis about the extraordinary and dangerous trip of my son on local TVs and that Allah had saved him, I thanked God and I was very happy,” Abdi said.

The Associated Press was unable to reach Abdi, who airport officials say drives a taxi.

port security experts, who say that for all the tens of billions of dollars the nation has spent screening passengers and their bags, few airports made a comparable investment to secure the airplanes parked on the tarmac.

“No system is foolproof,” said San Jose International Airport aviation director Kim Aguirre. “Certainly as we learn more, if we see any gaping holes, we will work to fill them.”

Aguirre said a perimeter search found no holes or crawl spaces in the barbed-wire fence surrounding the 1,050-acre airport.

Santa Clara High School Principal Gregory Shelby sent a note Tuesday to staff saying the teen has been in the U.S. for about four years, speaks English as his second language and had transferred into the district five weeks earlier, according to Jennifer Dericco, a spokeswoman for the Santa Clara Unified School District.

Aviation security experts

say San Jose is hardly alone when it comes to weaknesses in securing its airfield.

“What happened in San Jose can happen as we speak at other airports, because nobody can watch all these monitors” that feed video from around the airport, said Rafi Ron, former head of security at Tel Aviv, Israel airport. He now runs a security consulting firm.

That the teen survived is remarkable. At a cruising altitude of 38,000 feet, temperatures would have been well below zero and the air so starved of oxygen that he likely passed out. In response, his body could have entered a hibernation-like state, experts say.

The TSA said it has spent $80 billion on aviation security since its inception shortly after the 9/11 attacks. That does not include perimeter security.

“We were investing all our resources in the front door, which were the passengers and their bags,” Ron said. “And we left the back door open.”

U.S. weighs clemency for inmates jailed for 10 years

By ERIC TUCKER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – The Obama administration is encouraging many nonviolent federal prisoners to apply for early release – and expecting thousands to take up the offer.

It’s an effort to deal with high costs and overcrowding in prisons, and also a matter of fairness, the government says.

On Wednesday, the Justice Department unveiled a revamped clemency process directed at low-level felons imprisoned for at least 10 years who have clean records while in custody. The effort is part of a broader administration push to scale back the use of harsh penalties in some drug prosecutions and to address sentencing disparities arising from the 1980s crack cocaine epidemic that yielded disproportionately tough punishment for black

drug offenders.

“These older, stringent punishments that are out of line with sentences imposed under today’s laws erode people’s confidence in our criminal justice system,” Deputy Attorney General James Cole said, laying out new criteria that will be used to evaluate clemency petitions for possible recommendation for the president’s approval.

Though the criteria apply solely to federal inmates, states, too are grappling with severe prison overcrowding. In Nebraska, for example, prisons were at 155 percent of capacity at the end of March. And in California, courts have ordered the state to reduce the inmate population to 137.5 percent of designed capacity, or 112,164 inmates in the 34 facilities, by February 2016.

The White House, sometimes criticized as too stingy with its clemency power, says

it’s seeking more candidates for leniency in an overcrowded federal prison system whose costs comprise a sizable percentage of the Justice Department’s budget.

The system’s population has skyrocketed in recent decades, creating rising multibillion-dollar expenses that officials say threaten other law enforcement priorities and that an inspector general’s report last year characterized as a “growing crisis.” The United States incarcerates about a quarter of the world’s prisoners. Of the roughly 216,000 inmates in federal custody, nearly half are imprisoned for drug-related crimes.

The Justice Department says now’s the time to consider releasing more prisoners early.

“These defendants were properly held accountable for their criminal conduct. However, some of them, simply be-

cause of the operation of sentencing laws on the books at the time, received substantial sentences that are disproportionate to what they would receive today,” Cole said.

Officials say they don’t know how many of the tens of thousands of drug-related convicts would be eligible for early release, but an ideal candidate would meet six criteria – including no history of violence, no ties to criminal organizations or gangs and a clean prison record. He must also have already served 10 years or more of his sentence and be likely to have received a substantially shorter offense if convicted of the same offense today.

The Bureau of Prisons will notify all inmates of the criteria next week and provide electronic surveys to those who think they deserve clemency.

The Justice Department expects the vast majority of appli-

cants to be drug prisoners but didn’t foreclose the possibility that inmates convicted of other crimes – financial fraud, for example – could be considered.

“It’s really a coming together of decades of excessive sentencing, particularly in drug cases, combined with attention to the underused power of commutation,” said Marc Mauer, executive director of the Sentencing Project, an organization that works on sentencing policies.

The announcement is a “fantastic step in the right direction,” said Julie Stewart, president of Families Against Mandatory Minimums. And Douglas Berman, a sentencing law expert at Ohio State University, said it represented a “very meaningful change in both tone and attitude” from the days when clemency was seen as a power that carried “all political risk, no political reward.”

S. Korea ferry toll hits 156

By GILLIAN WONG and HYUNG–JIN KIM The Associated Press JINDO, South Korea – As the 156th body was pulled from waters where the ferry Sewol sank a week ago, relatives of the nearly 150 still missing pressed the government Wednesday to finish the grim task of recovery soon.

But the work was reaching a new, more complicated phase, with an official saying divers must now rip through cabin walls to retrieve more victims.

Looming in the back ground is a sensitive issue: When to bring in the cranes and begin the salvage effort by cutting up and raising the submerged vessel. The government has warned that the work might eliminate air pockets that could be sustaining survivors, but for some relatives that is a long-lost hope.

“Now we think we have to deal with this realistically,” said Pyun Yong-gi, whose 17-year-old daughter is among

the missing.

“We don’t want the bodies to decay further, so we want them to pull out the bodies as quickly as they can,” Pyun said on Jindo island, where recovered bodies are taken for families to identify.

That view is not shared among all relatives of the missing, however. One of them, Jang Jong-ryul, was sensitive about the mere mention of the word “salvage” and said most families don’t want to think about it.

The number of corpses recovered has risen sharply since the weekend, when divers battling strong currents and low visibility were finally able to enter the submerged vessel. But Koh Myung-seok, spokesman for the government-wide emergency task force, said the work is becoming more difficult, and divers must now break through cabin walls.

“The lounge is one big open space, so once in it we got our search done straight away.

But in the case of the cabins, we will have to break down

the walls in between because they are all compartments,” Koh said.

The government has not said when it intends to begin the salvage effort, although it has said it will be considerate of families of the missing.

“Even if there is only one survivor,” Koh said, “Our government will do its best to rescue that person, and then we will salvage the ferry.”

For some relatives of the missing, speed in recovering the dead is becoming more important than shrinking hopes that their loved ones might still be alive.

“I’ve seen the bodies, and they are starting to smell. It inflicts a new wound for the parents to see the bodies decomposed,” Pyun said.

He and other relatives have set a deadline of Thursday for the government to recover all the bodies, although he concedes they have no way to enforce it. “We are not the ones who are actually doing it, so we know that there is nothing we can do,” Pyun said.

The victims of the April 16

disaster are overwhelmingly students of a single high school in Ansan, near Seoul.

More than three-quarters of the 323 students are dead or missing, while nearly twothirds of the other 153 people on board survived.

The funeral halls in Ansan are already full, Oh Sang-yoon of the task force center said in a statement. He said the center “is taking measures to accommodate additional bodies by placing mortuary refrigerators at the funeral halls in Ansan,” and directing mourning families to funeral homes in nearby cities.

Twenty-two of the 29 members of the ferry’s crew survived, and 11, including Capt.

Lee Joon-seok, have been arrested or detained in connection with the investigation.

Two of the crew were arrested Wednesday, senior prosecutor Ahn Sang-don said.

Ahn said an analysis of photos and video on the ship before its sinking showed the captain and other arrested crew members didn’t rescue passengers, although it was

their duty. Ahn said the crew members were at the ship’s steering room or engine room together before fleeing the Sewol earlier than passengers.

The captain initially told passengers to stay in their cabins, and waited about half an hour to issue an evacuation order. He has said he waited, because the current was strong, the water was cold and passengers could have drifted away before help arrived.

But maritime experts said he could have ordered passengers to the deck – where they would have had a greater chance of survival – without telling them to abandon ship.

It was not the crew, but a passenger, who first alerted authorities that the boat was in distress, the coast guard confirmed Wednesday.

An emergency call was made 8:52 a.m. last Wednesday to the Jeonnam 119 fire department, which transferred the call to the Mokpo coast guard office, the coast guard said in an emailed statement.

The ferry made its first distress call three minutes later.

Obama offering Japan security, economic assurances

By JULIE PACE The Associated Press TOKYO – President Barack Obama is seeking to reassure Japanese leaders Thursday that he can deliver on his security and economic pledges to Asia even as the crisis in Ukraine demands U.S. attention and resources elsewhere.

The ominous standoff between Ukraine and Russia is threatening to overshadow Obama’s four-country Asia swing that began Wednesday.

He may decide during the trip whether to levy new economic sanctions on Moscow, a step that would signal the failure of an international agreement aimed at defusing the crisis.

But at least publicly, Obama will try to keep the focus on his Asia agenda, which includes reaffirming his commitment to a defense treaty with Japan,

making progress on a stalled trans-Pacific trade agreement and finalizing a deal to modestly increase the American military footprint in the Philippines.

Obama steered clear of more sensitive topics like the trade and China tensions as he and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe sat down for a morning meeting at Tokyo’s Akasaka Palace. Instead, Obama spoke of a U.S.-Japanese bond that transcends its military alliance.

“My visit here, I think, once again represents my deep belief that a strong U.S.-Japan relationship is not only good for our countries, but the world,” Obama said.

Abe, speaking through a translator, said he and Obama would be discussing the future of the “indispensable and irreplaceable” alliance. He and

CARACAS, Venezuela – Staring through a glass storefront at the Sambil shopping mall, Aleimar Sanchez sees more than a struggling business in the near-empty shelves of a Casio electronics store. She sees a country in sad decline.

Since its inauguration in 1999, Caracas’ biggest mall has been a hive of frenzied shopping, a glitzy counterpoint to the anti-capitalist tirades of the late Hugo Chavez. Today, a few die-hard shoppers stroll through dimly lit corridors, past stained walls in need of a paint job and shuttered boutiques. In those stores that are open, employees spread out their dwindling supplies.

Fifteen years of socialist rule and an acute economic crisis is catching up with Venezuela’s shopping malls, once impenetrable oases of consumerism where rich and poor alike sought refuge from crime-ridden streets.

“It makes you bitter to think that a country so rich is sinking deeper into ruin every day,” said Sanchez, a 39-year-old sales clerk visiting from Puerto Ordaz in southern Venezuela, where she said shelves are even more barren.

While a decade of rigid price controls long ago forced Venezuelans to scavenge for basic goods like toilet paper and corn flour, an oil-fueled spending boom and hands-off approach to less essential parts of the economy had always left stores filled with North Face jackets and Louis Vuitton handbags.

Things started to change with the election a year ago of President Nicolas Maduro and the onset of an economic crisis that has been the main driver of deadly protests shaking the country over the past three months.

With the supply of dollars drying up as oil production wanes, imports have fallen and shortages have hit record levels. Meanwhile, galloping 57 percent inflation is eroding families’ purchasing power.

Maduro says the problems are a result of price gouging and hoarding by opposition-aligned merchants waging an “econom-

ic war” to destabilize his government.

His response has sent shockwaves through the retail industry. In November, he seized a nationwide chain of appliance stores and slashed prices. The fire sale, which emptied the shelves, was followed by an even more devastating blow to business: a freeze on commercial rents at rates more than 50 percent lower than they had been at some malls.

The retail landscape has never looked more forlorn.

Incomes for shopping malls plummeted by as much as 75 percent as a result of the rent freeze, according to Claudia Itriago, director of the Venezuelan Chamber of Shopping Centers.

Malls that were a rare magnet for investment under Chavez are now at risk of shutting down. To reduce costs, many are cutting back on essential services like cleaning and air conditioning. At Sambil, many of its escalators sit idle for lack of maintenance.

At Tolon Mall, one of the capital’s most chic shopping spots, dozens of stores are closed on any given day. Strict labor laws make it nearly impossible to fire workers. So to get around the juggernaut and reduce payroll costs, many stores don’t bother to open every day.

Until recently, Venezuela’s shopping centers thrived as consumer spending surged.

Between the late 1990s and 2007, the number of malls in the country nearly doubled to 400. Owners invested lavishly in security systems and hired armies of guards, making malls one of the few safe places in a country with one of the world’s highest murder rates.

This year, shopping centers have slashed security and maintenance personnel, something they can do because such work is outsourced. Many shops at Sambil now close before dark out of safety concerns.

How quickly shelves are restocked may be a key indicator of events to come. More than the protests, which are concentrated in middle-class neighborhoods and are unlikely to force Maduro’s resignation, it’s the health of the economy that could decide the president’s fate.

Consider all alumni trustee candidates for Penn State Some might be troubled by the fact that alumni voting for Penn State’s board of trustees is behind the pace set in 2012 and 2013. But we see a potential upside to the slow start.

Could it be that alumni are spending more time contemplating the candidates and studying their positions?

With so many quality individuals seeking just three seats, we suggest just that approach.

Voting began April 10 and continues until 9 a.m. May 8.

That gives alumni plenty of time to make sound decisions – given a diversity of candidates – and still approach or surpass the record 37,500 total votes cast two years ago.

Jennifer Bird-Pollan, a professor and first-time candidate, said: “I hope that interested voters will read the candidate statements, and vote based on the qualifications and message of the candidate, rather than based on the money spent by that candidate in the election.”

We hope Penn State graduates will consider all 31 names on the ballot, those sponsored by organizations and those running independent campaigns.

The candidates make up an impressive group of business, education and government leaders who care about Penn State and want to see the university thrive.

But which ones have the

best vision for making that happen?

That’s what voters have to decide.

State College businessman Joel Myers is the lone incumbent in the hunt. Trustee Marianne Alexander chose not to run for re-election, and Jesse Arnelle withdrew before voting started.

So, at least two seats will be filled by newcomers.

The options are varied, and include: • Three university professors (Bird-Pollan, Alice Pope and Allen Soyster), a university president (Ricardo Azziz) and a retired schools administrator (George Weigand) • Attorneys (Jason Kutulakis, Joshua Fulmer,

Edward Kabala and John Graham Jr.) and a retired probation officer (Robert Hooper).

• A district attorney (Seth Williams), a former district judge and county commissioner (Keith Bierly), and an ex-state senator (Robert Jubelirer).

• Two Penn State football lettermen (Ted Sebastianelli and Rudy Glocker) who went on to successful careers.

• Media and marketing professionals (Amy Williams, Daniel Cocco and Ryan Bagwell) and defense/ government specialists (Ned Rauch-Mannino, Vincent Tedesco III).

• An engineer (Robert Milnes III), an accountant

(Robert Bowsher) and several corporate executives (Julie Harris McHugh, Matt Schuyler, Albert Lord and Brian Rutter).

• A dentist (Laurie Stanell) and writer/therapist (Art Greenwald), a 2010 Penn State graduate (Gavin Keirans) and a stay-at-home mom (Christine Rhoads).

Together, they are a collection of individuals suited for the challenge of helping take Penn State into the future.

But voters must choose three.

We urge alumni to get involved in the process, to research all of the candidates.

And then vote.

The important-sounding Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union has recently reiterated “its strong support for Ukraine’s unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.”

Poor, destabilized, post-putsch Ukraine is to be congratulated for receiving something none of the 28 countries that actually belong to the EU ever does: support for its sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. (“Unity” is a more complicated matter, given the EU’s reflexive pox on separatist movements that might prefigure the breakup of the EU itself.)

As the world’s preeminent transnational entity since the breakup of the USSR, the EU is all about eradicating its members’ sovereignty, independence and borders.

This, of course, is not something most Americans are aware of. When we hear talk of “Europe” vs. Russia, or the importance of extend-

Their dedication to the democratically enshrined rights of their citizens as guaranteed for more than half a century is beyond question.

It shouldn’t be. Anyone who thinks the bureaucratically grotesque and anti-democratic superstate model hit the junk heap of history with the USSR in 1991 needs to look more closely at the bureaucratically grotesque and anti-democratic Brussels monolith.

For starters, the elected members of the European Parliament may not introduce legislation or even introduce the repeal of

legislation. Instead, they may (and frequently do) rubber stamp legislation for their member-states – much, as leading Soviet dissident leader Vladimir Bukovsky has pointed out, in the tradition of the old Supreme Soviet. All legislation and decision-making come from the unelected members of the EU’s executive body, the European Commission, which Bukovsky compares to the old Politburo. (Some of the 28 EU commissioners are even former Communist apparatchiks.) Little wonder Bukovsky has dubbed the EU the “EUSSR.” With co-author Pavel Stroilov, Bukovsky documented 1980s-era discussions between Western and Soviet leaders recorded in Soviet archives that foreshadow the rise of the collectivist European superstate in a 2004 booklet titled “EUSSR: The Soviet Roots of European Integration.”

European ‘Bill of Rights’ is un-democratic • WEST Continued from page 18 The fruits of this cross-pollination are now quite visible.

For example, the London Telegraph reported this month that Viviane Reding, the (unelected) vice president of the European Commission, announced “an EU Bill of Rights that overrides British laws is becoming a ‘reality.’ ” For Reding and the EUniks, the establishment of a supreme EU justice system is cause for celebration. But it also is further evidence of the eroding sovereignty of nations and the receding practice of democracy. It certainly tears the paper promise former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair once said provided an “optout” clause for the nation from the EU charter. That clause, as the European Commission’s recent report demonstrates, is meaningless.

“Senior British judges have warned that the EU charter has already taken hold in Britain by stealth,” the Telegraph reported. They are “concerned that European judges” – with no accountability to British voters or institutions – “are using the charter to make binding rulings when making judgments on Britain’s implementation of EU legislation.” That EU legislation,

the Telegraph further noted, “accounts for up to 50 percent of British laws.”

This staggeringly high percentage of laws imposed on the citizens of Britain (and other countries in the EU as well) makes a mockery of a democratic people. Indeed, how can they still be considered “free”? Meanwhile, Reding herself has claimed in an interview that 75 or 80 percent of the laws in every EU member-state originate as EU “directives.”

Welcome to the evolving “United States of Europe” – an entity hailed by Reding and her comrades. According to the Telegraph, Reding sees this increased use of the EU charter “as a step toward a European ‘Bill of Rights’ along the lines of America’s Constitution.”

One difference: Our Constitution was ratified by

the states. This thing is the creation of an unaccountable, unelected and decidedly un-democratic EU bureaucracy headquartered in Brussels.

For anti-EU politicians, or “Euroskeptics,” such developments aren’t just cause for outrage. They may be the cause that takes them to prominence in next month’s European Parliament elections – a development that could some day lead to key nations breaking free of Brussels’ central control.

All of which is a long way of saying “European values” aren’t what they used to be.

And that means the contest for Ukraine isn’t really about one nation’s “independence” or “sovereignty” on either side.

To The Editor: Back when my husband and I got married, we were just a couple of kids right out of high school. We soon realized that without a higher education or advanced skills, we couldn’t make ends meet on our minimum-wage jobs. So instead of blaming our employer and demanding higher wages, we each worked two or more jobs to get by.

Over time, my husband learned the carpentry trade and I returned to school, eventually receiving my bachelor’s degree.

Once we had the education and skills, our wages increased

accordingly along with our job duties and responsibilities at work.

Nowadays, people are unwilling to go the “extra mile” and they blame their employers, (and others), if they can’t financially make ends meet.

Minimum-wage workers at McDonald’s recently went on strike and demanded that their wages increase to $15 per hour.

Workers claim they can’t live on minimum wage and it’s up to McDonald’s to pay them more money. After all, the burger giant is a huge company and makes millions annually. Workers feel that Mickey D’s should share the wealth, but why?

ROMEOVILLE – After the men’s volleyball teams from Lewis University and Ball State University met up for a five-set thriller in their last meeting, another marathon was anticipated in Wednesday’s Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association semifinals.

And the Flyers and Cardinals didn’t stray much from their March 29 match in Muncie, Ind., by giving the crowd at Neil Carey Arena another exciting match.

No. 11 Lewis rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat No. 13 Ball State, 23-25, 25-17, 22-25, 25-13, 15-8, to advance to its third straight MIVA championship match.

As a result of their third win of the season over the Cardinals (22-8), the Flyers (23-6) move on to Saturday’s championship against topranked Loyola University, which beat Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne, 27-25, 25-19, in Wednesday’s other semifinal.

The Flyers beat Ohio State to win the 2012 championship, while the Cardinals were seeking their first MIVA title appearance since 2009.

“We had a couple of late five-game matches, and we learned a lot from that,” Lewis coach Dan Friend said.

“And we learned a lot from last year when we lost the MIVA finals match in five.

We wanted to see how the guys would respond on their home court and they rose to the occasion.”

The Flyers grabbed a quick 3-0 lead in the finale on two kills from Geoff Powell (18 kills) and a kill from Bobby Walsh (eight kills, six blocks).

The visitors pulled to within 3-2 but never got any closer as Lewis gradually started to pull away.

“Ball State is a great team and they battled hard,” Flyers junior Eric Fitterer said.

“This was our last home game, and the playoffs, so we knew that we couldn’t give up. We knew that they were going to fired up to beat us on our home court to end our season. So, we had just to work that much harder to keep them from doing that.”

In the fourth set, the Flyers grabbed the early lead, and built it up to 23-10 following a kill and block from Boldog, kills from Powell and Petty and an ace serve from Walsh to go along with several Cardinal hitting errors.

Lewis used a pair of kills from Fitterer (14 kills, 12 digs) to spark a 4-0 run, which gave it a 10-5 lead in the second set and Ball State was unable to get any closer than three points back.

In the opening set, the Flyers grabbed a 23-21 lead following kills by Petty and Fitterer. But after Owens got a kill, Providence Catholic graduate Brendan Surane served up the final three points, with Owens having a hand in a pair of blocks.

Lucas Yanez chipped in with 19 digs for the Flyers while Ball State was paced by 12 kills by Shane Witmer and 20 digs from David Vander Meer.

Senior catcher Tyler Desmarais is a big reason.

Desmarais reached base three times, scored twice, ripped a key run-scoring double in a three-run fourth inning, ran the bases with his usual abandon and was flawless defensively.

“Tyler is amazing behind the plate,” Minooka coach Jeff Petrovic said. “You can’t get balls past him.

“He gives our pitchers confidence they can throw balls in the dirt with men on base. He has had a huge impact on our season.”

After falling behind 4-0, South (5-9, 3-4) battled back to within 4-3 when Marco Melgoza and Matt Taller, both of whom had two hits, notched two-out, run-scoring singles in the bottom of the fifth.

However, the Cougars had to earn everything they got as the Minooka battery – starter Mitch Malone and reliever Trevor Maly throwing to Desmarais – had no wild pitches or passed balls.

In contrast, South had five such miscues. Minooka, in fact, scored two runs on wild pitches. Cougars righthander Shane Ritter allowed two earned runs and four hits while striking out seven in going the distance.

“Ritter pitched a great game,” South coach Phil Bodone said. “That’s been our story. We don’t make routine plays and we can’t get the big hit. Minooka’s really good; we have to get better. You can’t give them extra outs and extra bases.”

Lefty Trevor Henderson pitched well in Tuesday’s series opener but Minooka’s Mitch Vogrin was a little better as the Indians prevailed, 3-0.

In the sixth, although Minooka failed to score, Desmarais went first-to-third on Tyler Paulsen’s second single, forcing an overthrow at third that allowed Paulsen to move up to second.

As for Thursday’s final game of the series, Desmarais said, “We want to sweep this team. It’s the Ridge Road rivalry. They beat us two out of three last year.”

I was stunned to see in Wednesday’s obituaries that Bob Mackey had passed away. It was only a couple of weeks ago when I talked with him, along with his wife Marilyn, in the doctor’s office.

Bob was known for his lifelong dedication to local sports as a youth baseball umpire and basketball and football official. Later, he umpired slow-pitch softball.

But more than that, he was a good friend to my family and so many others in the Joliet area.

Several yeas ago, I told him about an exchange between us I would never forget.

I was 12 years old, playing at the old Marycrest league.

I tried to check my swing on a 2-2 pitch but didn’t and should have been called out, but Bob said it was ball three.

The next pitch hit in the dirt about foot outside the plate, and he says, “Strike three, you’re out.” I told him that was a makeup call, that he should have called me out on the previous pitch. He said, “Goss, one more word and you’re out of here.”

We had a good laugh when I recalled the story.

What a good guy he was.

The final four baseball teams in the Class 3A Joliet Catholic Regional the last week of May at Gillespie Field collectively may be stronger than the four that play in the state semifinals June 13 and 14 at Silver Cross Field.

Sorry, but that’s the result of how the IHSA assigned schools to regional and sectional tournaments.

JCA, Lemont and Lincoln-Way West are all in the JCA Regional, along with Oak Forest and Tinley Park.

Oak Forest could receive the No. 4 position and Tinley Park the No. 5 when seeds are announced May 13.

As for the top three, the Hilltoppers, Warriors and Indians could be 1-2-3 in any order. In this week’s Prep Baseball Report rankings – and our friends at PBR are the experts when it comes to high school baseball – Lemont is No. 4, JCA 6 and Lincoln-Way West 11.

Class 4A teams usually dominate the rankings, and rightfully so. From our area, Minooka is No. 5, Providence 15 and Plainfield North 20.

Anyone involved with the Lemont, JCA and Lincoln-Way West programs are justified in questioning whether it really had to be this way. For that matter, how would you like to be Oak Forest, which is a good team in its own right but must win a regional over three teams that are among the state’s most highly regarded?

Lincoln-Way West will host the sectional, which also will draw regional

winners from the Bremen, Rich East and Morgan Park regionals.

In 3A and 4A, the IHSA often puts 20-plus schools into sectional complexes, with the idea that better teams would not meet until the sectional level. But with the south side of Chicago and much of the south suburbs in the Lincoln-Way West Sectional, assigning teams to regionals rather than creating a sectional complex was deemed the better option.

Assuming Lemont, JCA and Lincoln-Way West receive the No. 1 through No. 3 regional seeds, 2 vs. 3 will be a regional semifinal while 1 will play the 4 vs. 5 winner. An awfully good 2 or 3 seed will be gone in its first postseason game.

A value to landing the No. 1 seed is you only have to beat one of the 2 and 3 seeds to get out of the regional, and maybe you can take a chance on saving your ace pitcher for that game. The 2 or 3 seed does not have that luxury.

I said the 3A state finals at Silver Cross Field may not be as strong as the local regional. While that’s true, there is no guarantee Lemont, JCA or Lincoln-Way West will be at the state finals, assuming, of course, that one of them wins the regional.

After all, this is baseball, where anything can happen, and usually does. In single-elimination tournaments, you never know when the surprise may occur.

Still, 3A is not as deep statewide in quality teams as 4A. Nobody is disputing that Lemont, JCA and Lincoln-Way West are among the best in 3A. After them and a few select others, there

McDowell to wait for 1,000 win; Coalers falls to Sandwich

By MARK JOHNSON mjohnson@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Coal City’s Jerry McDowell will have to wait another day, at least, to earn his 1,000th career victory as a baseball head coach.

McDowell took 473 high school wins and 526 grade school wins into Wednesday’s Interstate Eight Conference game against Sandwich at John Cullick Field. Sandwich spoiled the party, scoring three times in the top of the seventh inning to win, 4-1.

The Coalers offense produced just three hits against Sandwich pitcher Luke Hardisty, who needed 86 pitches to go the distance. Sandwich avenged an earlier 13-2 loss to the Coalers.

“Our approach at the plate wasn’t very good today,” McDowell said. “We swung at a lot of pitches that was out of the zone, and on top of that, they were curveballs, firstpitch curves, it kind of sets us up for the rest of the at-bat the

wrong way.”

Austin Smith and Zach Fordon led off the seventh with consecutive singles for Sandwich (6-5-1, 3-2-1), and a Kevin Cunz grounder rolled through the legs of the Coalers third baseman, with Smith scoring the go-ahead run on the play. A two-run single by the next hitter, Austin Clark, ended the outing for Coal City starter Jared Skubic.

“Their pitcher was doing a nice job,” Sandwich coach Jason Van Pelt said. “It’s not like we’re just torching the base hits out there. We were getting on in kind of lucky ways – infield hits, stuff like that. Scoring a lot of runs is all about timely hitting. We didn’t get them early, but I got a lot of confidence in my guys.”

Reliever Ricky Collins held Sandwich down from there, but the Coalers (8-8, 4-2) went down in order in the bottom of the seventh.

“Skubic did a nice job

[Wednesday], our sophomore pitcher. Threw the ball really well and had a lot of ground balls,” McDowell said. “We got out of it again, we got out of it again. We don’t have a lot of strikeout pitchers. They put the ball in play. ... Eventually it was gonna happen, and unfortunately it did in the seventh.”

Each team scored its first run in the second inning.

Luke Hardisty walked and came home on a Smith infield single for Sandwich, though the Indians also left the bases loaded for a second consecutive inning. Coal City’s scored when Ricky Collins hit a one-out single and was driven home on another single by Nick Micetich.

The Coalers will try again to get McDowell to the milestone again today when they host Illiana Christian. Their next two attempts, if necessary, also would be at Cullick Field – against Manteno on Friday, and against Seneca on Monday.

JOLIET – In a matchup of Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball divisional leaders, the University of St. Francis and Judson University split a twinbill Wednesday at Silver Cross Field. Judson won a 1-0 pitchers’ duel in the opener, before USF batted around twice in an 18-2 win in the nightcap.

Game 1 featured a battle between USF right-hander Jake Butler (Minooka), who scattered eight hits and one run while fanning seven, and Judson hurler Ryan Perez, who allowed only two hits without issuing a walk.

Judson’s first two batters of the game reached base, but Butler (7-2) struck out the next three to end the threat. The second of the two strikeouts marked the 300th of his career. With his seven punchouts on the day, he increased his career total to 305 – four shy of the USF all-time record. Perez (10-2) held the Saints hitless until the bottom of the fifth inning when junior third baseman Mike Chimera lined a single to left Judson plated the game’s lone run in the top of the sixth. After Jeff Raymond singled and stole second base with one out, Mark DeYoung followed with a run-scoring base hit.

In Game 2, every player

in the Saints’ starting lineup scored and eight of nine collected an RBI as USF batted around in back-to-back innings.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third, when the Saints sent 13 batters to the plate in a 10-run outburst. Brandon Mendoza drove in the first two runs with a one-out single before capping the inning with another two-run base hit. Chimera, Brad Porter (Plainfield North) and Luke Wyss each scored and drove in a run in the inning.

CCAC South Division leader USF (30-17, 18-4 CCAC) then sent 11 batters to the plate as it tallied seven runs in the fourth. Trevor Cherwin, David Kuhne, Joe Ruge and Wyss each delivered an RBI single in the inning.

Mendoza finished the game 3 for 4 with four RBIs, while Kuhne, Porter, Cherwin, Wyss and Kyle Burton each drove in two. Kuhne, Cherwin, Wyss and Rick Faron joined Mendoza with three-hit performances.

Adam Panayotovich logged the complete-game victory, allowing eight hits and two runs while striking out eight against only one walk.

Judson (34-15, 18-4) remains tied with USF for the best overall record in the CCAC with five league games remaining.

STAFF REPORTS ROMEOVILLE – Lewis softball is back in the thick of the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament mix, as the Flyers defeated UWParkside three times, 5-1 in 11 innings, 4-2 and 7-5, on Tuesday. The first game was the completion of a suspended contest from last Wednesday.

With the sweep, Lewis improves to 20-21 overall and 14-14 in conference play. The Flyers currently sit in third place in the GLVC East Division.

The suspended game began in the eighth and remained tied at 1 until the top of the 11th, as Carly Jaworski (Lemont) led off with a solo homer.

Jaworski went 2 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Flyers offensively. Kelly Bowler (Lockport) tossed all 11 innings to earn the win. She allowed one run and scattered 10 hits.

Bowler took the ball again in the opening game of the scheduled doubleheader and picked up where she left off, scattering two runs on six hits and striking out three.

She was the beneficiary of more late-game heroics, as Brittany Russell broke a 2-all tie in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run triple. Russell went 3 for 4 with two RBIs to pace the Flyer offensive attack.

The Flyers also received a pair of hits from Kelsey Ullrich and Dani Knaak (Bolingbrook). In the nightcap, Russell (2 for 3, two RBIs, two runs) sparked the Flyers again.

Party a century in the making for Wrigley

By ANDREW SELIGMAN The Associated Press CHICAGO – There was a giant replica cake right next to the Ernie Banks statue, and an old-time band played as fans made their way through the main entrance.

The famed marquee had a message, too.

“Happy Birthday, Wrigley Field,” it read.

Exactly 100 years after the Chicago Federals pounded the Kansas City Packers in the first game at the famed ballpark, Wrigley was the scene of a joyous birthday bash Wednesday afternoon.

Banks and other Hall of Famers such as Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins and Andre Dawson were on hand, and so were Bears greats Dick Butkus and Gale Sayers.

Before the game, the memories, the stories, flowed like runs in a big rally.

“It just gives me goose bumps because I had a chance to play here,” Williams said.

“I often said this was my playground during the summer for so many years. So I have enjoyed it and I still enjoy it.”

The celebration was held as Cubs ownership and the neighboring rooftop owners remain in a standstill over proposed renovations.

The rooftop owners, who charge fans to sit in bleachers atop their buildings, have a contract under which they share 17 percent of their revenues with the Cubs.

Assuming they eventual-

ly go ahead with the renovations, it’ll be up to the Ricketts family to preserve that charm while bringing the stadium into the 21st century.

Wednesday was a day to turn back the clock, a day to celebrate the century that was at the neighborhood park on Chicago’s North Side.

Ushers wore party hats, and fans received birthday cupcakes and throwback jerseys. There was a replica Wrigley Field cake from Carlo’s Bakery, setting of the hit TLC show “Cake Boss,” just outside the ballpark.

On his way in from suburban Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Williams thought about all the events besides baseball games that have taken place at Wrigley Field over the years. The ballpark has hosted everything from boxing to soccer to pro wrestling to the circus to the rodeo to concerts to a Blackhawks game.

There was even this: On backto-back weekends in January 1944, ski jumpers leapt from scaffolding covered in snow and ice and landed behind second base.

Wrigley Field, it seems, has seen everything but a World Series championship.

The Cubs haven’t won one since 1908 – eight years before they started playing at what was then known as Weeghman Park.

Williams recalled watching the Bears at Wrigley, back when Sayers and Butkus and Mike Ditka were playing and when George Halas was running the club.

Ninth-inning error costs Cubs game CHICAGO – Fittingly, the Cubs marked Wrigley Field’s 100th birthday with a loss – a dramatic, error-filled one, at that.

One out from victory, the Cubs allowed the Diamondbacks to rally for five runs in the ninth inning in a 7-5 loss Wednesday.

After an error by shortstop Starlin Castro, Martin Prado hit a tworun single off Pedro Strop (0-2), Miguel Montero had a tying single

against James Russell and Aaron Hill followed with a two-run triple off Justin Grimm.

Still, the Cubs are 4,076-3,621 (.530) during the regular season at Wrigley, according to STATS, and 7-20 in the postseason. The Cubs failed in its bid to win three straight games for the first time since last July 26 to 28.

The beloved ballpark, the second-oldest in the major leagues

behind 102-year-old Fenway Park in Boston, opened April 23, 1914, when the Federal League’s Chicago Federals beat the Kansas City Packers, 9-1.

The crowd of 32,323 – about 9,000 under capacity – sang “Happy Birthday” in the middle of the fifth inning, the Cubs wore Federals’ uniforms and the Diamondbacks wore Kansas City Packers’ threads.

By NOAH TRISTER The Associated Press DETROIT – Marcus Semien’s seventh-inning grand slam lifted the White Sox over the Tigers, 6-4, Wednesday night.

Jose Abreu hit another long home run for the Sox, but it was Semien’s first career slam that turned around the game.

Detroit starter Drew Smyly allowed two runs in six innings, but Evan Reed (0-1) gave up two singles and a walk, and Ian Krol allowed the home run to Semien.

Andre Rienzo (1-0) gave up four runs in the fourth inning but kept the Tigers quiet otherwise in his first start this season. He allowed five hits and two walks in 6 1⁄3 innings, striking out three.

Matt Lindstrom pitched the ninth for his third save, but it wasn’t easy. He allowed a single, a walk and two deep flyouts before retiring Alex Avila on a line drive to first with runners on second and third.

Austin Jackson homered for Detroit.

Paul Konerko had three hits for the White Sox, including an eighth-inning double that moved him past Frank Thomas atop the team’s career total bases list.

Abreu opened the scoring in the first with a two-run shot, reaching the bushes beyond the wall in center field at Comerica Park for the second time this series. Smyly was impressive after that; he would end up yielding six hits and a walk with seven strikeouts.

Rienzo gave up the lead in the fourth, allowing a two-run single to J.D. Martinez and Jackson’s two-run homer to left-center. But the Tigers had only one more runner against Rienzo after the homer. The 25-year-old right-hander from Brazil had pitched only one inning this season, but Rienzo got the start Wednesday with Sox starters Chris Sale and Felipe Paulino both injured.

Suspended H-F coach reinstated THE ASSOCIATED PRESS BLOOMINGTON – The Illinois High School Association has re-instated the former Homewood-Flossmoor girls basketball coach whose team was disqualified from the state tournament for rules violations.

Anthony Smith was suspended in February amid allegations of recruiting violations. The association now says Smith is reinstated and is eligible to coach at any IHSA member school immediately.

Smith was formerly girls basketball coach at Bolingbrook High School. After leading the Raiders to four state titles and three other state trophies, Smith resigned as Bolingbrook’s coach in May before landing at H-F. After taking over at H-F, Bolingbrook players Amarah Coleman, Destiny Harris, Kristen Moore and Lexi Smith transferred there.

IHSA executive director Marty Hickman said Homewood-Flossmoor High School and its administration was

cooperative throughout an investigation into the school’s athletic program. He said administrators were “forthcoming in providing the board with the information they needed to make this decision.”

The IHSA decision comes a week after the Homewood-Flossmoor school board voted not to renew Smith’s contract for the 2014-15 school year. However Smith’s lawyer, Patrick Mayerbock, said the coach is happy about the IHSA’s decision.

‘Children were affected, too’ Joliet Jewish Congregation dramatizes teen Holocaust experiences in play

That’s Natalie Schoeneck’s impression of the Holocaust after rehearsing the role of a teen girl who survived it.

Schoeneck, 13, of Morris, will help present, “And Then They Came for Me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank,” about the experience of young teenagers during World War II, during Sunday’s Holocaust remembrance program at Joliet Jewish Congregation.

The synagogue’s rabbi – Charles Rubovits – has actually met Eva Geiringer Schloss, the drama’s main character and stepsister to Anne Frank. He called Schloss “a very interesting and intelligent woman.”

“When she tells the story as you sit around the dinner table, it makes the hair on the back of your neck rise,” Rubovits said. “The stuff that happens in the play is fairly benign compared to what she experienced.”

Similarly, Schoeneck’s previous acting experience also is benign by comparison. A previous ensemble member of three Coal City Middle School musicals (“Annie, “The Little Mermaid” and “High School Musical”), Schoeneck is now pretending, as Eva, that Nazis are interrogating her while her mother is held captive.

“I’m glad we don’t have anything like that today,” Schoeneck said.

Rubovits disagrees with the notion that Holocaust remembrances are for adults.

By engaging some of the synagogue’s children in this year’s event, Rubovits hopes to “put a youthful face on it.”

The play, Rubovits said, recounts one story, after the liberation, of a starving mother and daughter stumbling upon a dead horse and quickly deciding to cook it. It’s not

easy being Jewish, Rubovits said, and youth need to know life isn’t always “nice.”

“What do you do to survive?” Rubovits said. “You grab a knife and go to work.”

Rubovits occasionally challenges teens to spend 24 hours in complete and isolated silence with only a book for company: no phone, no

iPad, no computer, no electric lights and no bathroom (except for a chamber pot) until the “sun goes down.”

“If anyone in your family hears you,” Rubovits said, “you lose.”

Yet, Rubovits praised teen idealism and resiliency, the very traits that allowed them to emerge from concentration camps less scathed than their “stodgy” adult counterparts.

“Young people look for that wonderful life,” Rubovits said, “and the fun and enjoyment that’s coming.”

Mac Vanoudt, 13, of Morris, whose drama performance was limited to one grade school play about rain forests, plays Eva’s 16-yearold brother Heinz, who goes into hiding with his father, Pappy, and then are captured and questioned.

Recreating Heinz has given Vanoudt a broad and personalized view of the Holocaust. One isn’t simply reading about the horrors,

he said, but witnessing and hearing the accounts.

“You get to see how they felt and what they had to experience, not just in the concentration camps but going to the concentration camps in cattle cars,” Vanoudt said.

“They had a loaf of bread and a bucket of water and a bucket for a bathroom. … How these people survived, wow!”

That’s Karen Luksa’s reaction to the play, too, even though Luksa is familiar with the Holocaust. Luksa, education chairman, who plays the adult Eva, has taught the topic to eighth-graders at St. Dennis School in Lockport and she has heard Holocaust survivors speak.

“When you hear what children went through – humiliation with the guards and being naked and stuff like that – how do you find husbands, get married, have children and live a normal life?” Luksa said. “It’s just amazing to me. It shows what wonderful endurance humans have.”

With fewer Holocaust survivors still alive and able to share their stories, and with skepticism among some people that the Holocaust never happened, Rubovits feels dramatic presentations, such as “And Then They Came for

St. Joseph members restore church float

Students of the Month

By JAN LARSEN Shaw Media Correspondent A church float built in 1975 for Joliet’s gigantic Bicentennial Parade has been resurrected – and won many admiring glances at the recent 18th annual Easter Parade.

Art Hrvatin, lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Joliet, remembered the first float, a replica of the commanding edifice on North Chicago Street, was originally made of wire and napkins. It was used many times over many years, he said.

“When it rained, the stuffed tissues looked like snotty noses,” said Hrvatin with a chuckle, shortly before the parade stepped off.

Hrvatin said it took 209 hours for him to apply Styrofoam board to the structure.

Fellow parishioners Andy Honiotes and Art Delorenzo made the steeples out of sheet metal, Hrvatin said.

The bidding is instructive.

Over West’s textbook takeout double, North’s redouble indicates at least 10 high-card points and fewer than four-card heart support. (Note that in the United States, a two-diamond response is typically treated as natural and nonforcing, showing a long suit in a weak hand.

Behavioral therapy, medication can relieve panic attacks Dear Doctor K: I think I might be having panic attacks, but I’m not sure. What does a panic attack feel like?

Dear Reader: People who have never experienced a panic attack typically think it’s a mild feeling of nervousness. But in fact, it’s a lot more than that.

First of all, it usually starts very suddenly; it doesn’t slowly creep up on you. Second, it’s not mild. A panic attack causes a sudden wave of intense anxiety, apprehension, fearfulness or terror. Usually, you have a terrible sense of impending doom, or of a looming catastrophe.

You may experience a sensation of smothering and a fear of going crazy or losing control.

Physical symptoms may include shortness of breath, palpitations, sweating and chest pains. The symptoms are often so severe that you may believe you are having a heart attack.

During a panic attack, you may feel dissociated from the world, or even from yourself. Some people describe this as “watching a movie of yourself.”

A panic attack usually lasts five to 30 minutes, but it can continue for as long as several hours. Panic attacks typically occur during the day, but they can also rouse you from deep

What causes panic attacks?

There is considerable evidence that certain parts of the brain are activated when you feel anxious.

Brain-imaging studies have found that these areas suddenly become activated when a person experiences a panic attack. However, that begs a question: What makes these areas of the brain suddenly become activated?

While panic attacks may be triggered by stress, they also may start for no apparent reason. A panic attack can be a single, isolated event, or attacks may occur repeatedly. Repeated panic attacks are often triggered by a particular situation.

Sometimes panic attacks occur when you are in a situation that

makes you feel endangered and unable to escape – driving over a bridge, for example, or shopping in a crowded store. Such situations can repeatedly trigger panic attacks in some people.

If you think you have experienced a panic attack, make an appointment with a mental health professional. He or she will likely recommend a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and medication.

CBT is a type of psychotherapy.

It has two parts. Cognitive therapy helps change patterns of thinking that may prevent you from overcoming your fears. Behavioral therapy helps change your reactions in situations that trigger anxiety.

Doctors often prescribe medications known as benzodiazepines for panic attacks. These drugs help you feel mentally and physically relaxed. They are used as needed to help prevent intense worry about having another attack or about the consequences of an attack. They can also be used to relieve symptoms during a panic attack.

hosting graduation party Dr. Wallace: Graduation is not far off, and it’s time to start planning the parties to honor our graduating seniors. We plan to have a party at our house for our daughter who will be a 2014 high school graduate. Only her teenage friends will be invited, and our family will celebrate her graduation at a later time in a restaurant.

Our local parent organization has set up some guidelines for parents of teens hosting a party and I would like to share it with your readers.

1. Set the ground rules with your teens before the party. Let your teen know what you expect. This will give both of you an opportunity to express feelings and concerns.

It is important to stress shared responsibility.

2. A parent should be home during the party. Encourage shared chaperoning.

Plan to have the party in a part of the house where the guests will be comfortable and where you can maintain adequate supervision. Plan to bring in and serve the treats and non-alcoholic drinks. This will help keep the party running smoothly and give you an opportunity to meet your teen’s friends.

3. Notify your neighbors that there will be a party.

Encourage your teen to call or to send a note to close neighbors telling them about the party.

4. Notify the police when planning a “large” party.

This will help the police protect you, your guests and neighbors. If needed, discuss with the police an agreeable plan for guest parking.

5. Limit party attendance and times. Small groups (around 30) are easier to handle. Make a guest list and send out invitations. Party crashing should not be allowed.

6. Guests should not be allowed to come and go. This will discourage teens from leaving the party to drink or use other drugs elsewhere and returning.

7. Be aware that you may be brought to court on criminal charges and/or have to pay monetary damages in a civil lawsuit if you furnish alcohol or drugs to minors. Be alert to the signs of alcohol or drug use. Guests who try to bring in alcohol or other drugs, or who otherwise refuse to cooperate, should be asked to leave. Be willing to call police if unwanted guests refuse to leave.

8. Other ideas. Avoid easy access to alcohol or other drugs in your home. Plan to have plenty of food and non-alcoholic drinks. It is vital for parents to become acquainted with their children’s friends and their parents. Both Kate Winslet (as single mom Adele) and Josh Brolin (as prison escapee Frank) deliver studiously serious performances, trying mightily not to betray how hard they’re working to overcome the preposterous story in which they find themselves.

If only Jason Reitman, best known for such comedies as “Juno,” “Up in the Air” and “Young Adult,” had brought some wit or swiftness to bear on Joyce Maynard’s painfully trite and retrograde plot, which grows only more contrived with the introduction of a creepily precocious girl whom Adele’s son Henry befriends at the library.

But “Labor Day” has been staged so handsomely, its actors delivering such alternately seductive and solemn performances, that the blame seems most fairly assigned to the source material, which resorts to facile captivity fantasies and cheap psychology, rather than the characters’ own contradictions, to make its dramatic points. It’s difficult to believe a word of “Labor Day,” but then again you don’t have to in order to luxuriate in Winslet and Brolin’s bubbling, steaming chemistry.

“Devil’s Due” (R, 89 minutes, Fox) A “Rosemary’s Baby” for the “Paranormal Activity” generation, “Devil’s Due” uses the increasingly unimaginative found-footage gimmick to try to juice up the tired trope of a woman who is carrying a demonic fetus. The movie’s two-word title is the world’s shortest plot synopsis. What few surprises lie in store arrive very late in the film, and consist of generic supernatural horror clichés (sub-genre: the occult). In other words, expect arcane religious symbols, Latin incantations and levitation.

with her husband, King Amphitryon (a spectacularly overacting Scott Adkins), and his warring ways and prays to Hera for peace. The goddess comes up with a plan that involves letting her husband, the almighty Zeus, sleep with Alcmene (Roxanne McKee) and father a child, who shall bring peace to the land. But the meat of the story is this: Hercules falls in love with a princess, who is betrothed to his evil brother Iphicles (Liam Garrigan), and the equally vile King Amphitryon sends his supposed offspring to co-opt distant lands where certain death awaits him. Of course, he doesn’t die, and he and another Greek, Sotiris (Liam McIntyre), journey back to Argos to foil the nuptials that are to take place three moons hence.

But the only thing epic about “The Legend of Hercules” is what a failure it is.

“The Legend of Hercules” (PG-13, 99 minutes, Lionsgate) Kellan Lutz has the muscles to play the powerful demigod offspring of Zeus and the mortal queen Alcmene, but he could have skipped a few grueling weight-lifting routines to take some acting lessons.
