JOLIET TOWNSHIP – A 16-year-old boy was fatally ambushed on the street Monday afternoon in Joliet Township.

At 1:39 p.m. Robert J. Garcia of Joliet was walking to the driveway of his friends’ house in the 400 block of Algonquin Street when a man wearing tape over his face and a gray hoodie walked up and fired several shots from the middle of the street, according to witnesses. Garcia ran inside the open garage of the house where he was shot again and collapsed.

The assailant fled the scene while a woman came out of the house screaming, “He’s been shot. He’s been shot,” according to a neighbor who did not want to be identified. Another man who came out called 911 and spoke with police, the neighbor said.

Some houses in Algonquin Street are incorporated within Joliet, but the scene of the crime is not. A Joliet police officer was the first to arrive on the scene, while the victim was transported to Silver Cross

WHERE IT’S AT QUICK NEWS Downtown street closed JOLIET – Mayor Art Schultz Drive will be closed between Jefferson and Van Buren streets for about three months starting Thursday as part of the transportation center construction project.

The work is expected to be completed by July 31, the city said in a news release.

Mayor Art Schultz Drive, also known as Michigan Street, will be closed for construction of the temporary Heritage Corridor boarding ramp. The Joliet Gateway Center transportation campus is a $43.4 million project that includes new train and bus stations, more commuter parking and relocation of train passenger platforms.

Plainfield school board to meet Wednesday PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield school board will have a special meeting at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday to name an attorney who will represent the school district before the property tax appeals board.

Study: Suburbs account for half of all greenhouse gas emissions

Jesse Elam, a planner with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, said it’s generally accepted in urban planning that suburban environments contribute more greenhouse gases than cities.

Local governments can purchase low-emission engines for their vehicle fleets to promote air quality, he said.

Planning to locate retail centers closer to where people lives also can help.

“There is a ton of evidence out there that suggests a more compact growth pattern tends to have lower greenhouse gas emissions,” he said.

City officials in Joliet are trying to get people to use public transportation such as the bus and train system, said James Haller, the city’s community and economic development director. He said the city also converted traffic signals to light-emitting diodes that use less electricity and last longer.

They also give people recycle toters, which has resulted in a 40 percent increase in recycling citywide in the past two years, he said.

“I know some of my neighbors didn’t recycle, and when they got the toters they are now recycling everything,” he said.

Will County has two plans – a solid waste management plan and energy plan – to ensure its landfill and energy consumption is environmentally sound.

ronment, said she was unsure if suburbs contribute more greenhouse gases than urban areas. While high density areas such as cities might not be taking up as much land they are still causing pollution, she said.

CARE tries to raise awareness of environmental issues with citizens and elected officials, Rendulich said. The organization has been particularly concerned about the impact from the coal and chemical industries.

Rendulich said she recommends residents in suburbs should reduce waste, reuse products and recycle.

“We’ve been a disposable society and it’s not strictly limited to Will County, it’s everywhere,” she said.

JOLIET – No city is an island to itself.

They’re tied to the suburbs and should work with them to find ways to reduce greenhouse gases, researchers say.

According to a study from the University of California, Berkeley, suburbs account for half of all household greenhouse gas emissions, despite making up less than half of the U.S. population. The average carbon footprint of households living in the center of large, dense urban areas is about 50 percent below average, while households in suburbs are up to twice the average.

While there are no acrossthe-board solutions, researchers, city officials and local environmental groups are finding ways to make the suburbs greener.

Dan Kammen, a professor of energy at UC Berkeley who led the study, said a regional public transportation plan for the Chicago area could be a cost-effective solution to reduce greenhouse gases.

“Both on the transportation and local energy side, there is a pretty big opportunity to save on energy and carbon footprint,” he said.

It’s more than just transportation, he said. Other causes for more greenhouse gas in the suburbs include larger homes and energy costs associated with delivering goods and services.

Many towns, including Plainfield and Joliet, have recycling programs, construct “green” buildings and create bike paths, all with the goal of being environmentally friendly.

For John Proulx, Plainfield village staff planner, it’s not surprising that suburbs can be responsible for more greenhouse gases than the city.

“I think it’s one of the unfortunate drawbacks of this suburban development pattern,” he said. “I enjoy living

He helped put man on the moon

John C. Houbolt, the engineer from Joliet whose lunar-orbit rendezvous concept put man on the moon in 1969, died April 15 at a nursing home in Scarborough, Maine, of complications from Parkinson’s disease. He was 95.

“He was the whole package,” said Greg Peerbolte, executive director of the Joliet Area Historical Museum. “He was analytically brilliant as a scientist and professionally courageous. He truly is an American hero.”

Houbolt was born in 1919 in Altoona, Iowa. His family then moved to New Lenox, before finally settling on a large farm on Black Road.

“We grew crops in general and, more particularly, ran a dairy,” Houbolt told The Herald-News in a 2004 interview.

“We grew our own crops to feed the pigs, cattle and horses.”

As a young boy, Houbolt became fascinated by flight after a pilot used one of his father’s fields to take off and land while selling 50-cent airplane rides to the public.

Inspired, Houbolt began conducting interesting experiments, such as jumping out of a hayloft while clutching an umbrella, according to Joliet historian Robert Sterling.

Houbolt later began building model airplanes out of scrap balsa wood, a hobby that

After graduating from Joliet Township High School in 1936, Houbolt went on to attend Joliet Junior College, where he was a straight-A student.

Houbolt earned a degree in civil engineering at University of Illinois, before taking a job in 1942 with NASA in Hampton, Va. Much of his initial work focused on improving airplane design, including stealth concepts that would eventually be used on planes such as the B2 bomber. Then, in 1957, the Russians launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial earth satellite, ushering in the Space Race.

“That jolted the entire en-

gineering community in this country,” Houbolt said. “We suddenly found ourselves behind the eight ball.”

For the next 12 years, the two superpowers competed to put a man in orbit, and then a man on the moon.

Houbolt became a leading scientist promoting the controversial concept of lunar-orbit rendezvous, or LOR. He theorized to get to the moon, a separate craft would need to detach from the main spaceship.

That craft would land on the moon, and then later return to the mother ship, which would orbit the moon in the interim.

Most of his colleagues proposed direct ascent, using a conventional rocket to land

backwards on the moon.

Houbolt was convinced it would never work. “[I suggested that NASA] go up there with a much smaller vehicle, half as big as any other,” Houbolt said. “If you are in orbit around the moon, why take a living room? Just get into a small rocket, leave the mother ship in orbit, go down to the surface of the moon, explore and go back to join [the mother ship] and go back to earth.”

The LOR concept was met with a lot of skepticism at NASA. “Nobody wanted it,” Houbolt told The Herald-News in 1969. “They thought it was a lousy idea, a terrible idea, so bad they didn’t even want to

consider it.”

But Houbolt doggedly struggled to convince NASA of the feasibility of the plan and of the space vehicle necessary to carry it out, even going over his supervisor’s head to make his case.

“Having the conviction of your own theory, to know you are correct and literally put your career on the line, that really took a lot of courage,” Peerbolte said.

That vehicle became known as the Eagle. And on July 20, 1969, astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong used it to land on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission.

Houbolt’s hometown celebrated his achievements by declaring Sept. 18, 1969, as John Houbolt Day. Houbolt was feted with a luncheon, parade and fireworks display. The city renamed Airport Road, the road fronting the new main campus of Joliet Junior College, as Houbolt Road in his honor.

In 2009, 40 years after the moon landing, the Joliet Area Historical Museum opened its $600,000 permanent exhibit, The Soaring Achievements of John C. Houbolt. The centerpiece of the two-story display features an interactive lunar lander exhibit that lets visitors attempt to land a spacecraft the way the Apollo astronauts did.

“The moon landing was arguably one of the greatest human accomplishments in history,” Peerbolte said. “Today is a good time to reflect on that legacy.”

Homer Glen holds meeting on Woodbine Golf Course

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com HOMER GLEN – Village officials in Homer Glen will hear from residents Tuesday on the purchase of the Woodbine Golf Course.

The meeting will be held for public input on village plans

for the golf course and building. It will be at 6:30 p.m. at Homer Glen Village Hall at 14917 S. Founders Crossing, 149th and Bell Road, before the regular Village Board meeting.

Homer Glen Mayor Jim Daley said the village bought the entire golf course and building, and expects renovations

to the site to begin this winter.

He said the village expects the costs of the renovation to be about $2 million and the work to last about four months.

“We’re very motivated to be moving on that time frame [in the winter] because its an indoor project and it’ll be highly competitive for carpen-

ters and painters,” he said.

Village Hall now operates out of rented space. The village plans to turn the Woodbine banquet facility into the new village hall. Daley said the golf course will be converted into the first major park in Homer Glen and making the building at the course the new

village hall.

Jim Ludwig, the golf course owner, plans to retire, he said.

Trustee George Yukich said the village also is looking for input from the people who live around the golf course.

“The meeting [Tuesday] night should be informative,” he said.

Joliet celebrates Arbor Day Mayor Giarrante visits Wesmere Elementary School

JOLIET – The award for the biggest elm tree in Joliet goes to Catherine Comfort, according to news release from the city.

The city announced Comfort as this year’s winner of Joliet’s “Big American Elm Tree Contest.” The winning elm tree is 81-feet tall, with an average crown of 73 feet and a circumference of 12 feet, 10 inches.

This is the eighth year the city has put on the “Big Tree” contest to emphasize the importance of mature urban trees in the city.

Different tree species are chosen each year.

“It’s harder than it looks,” the 11-year-old from Plainfield said to her classmates as they took turns shoveling dirt around a newly planted tree.

Anicka and more than 120 fifth-graders participated in the city’s Arbor Day celebration by planting a gingko tree and performing a series of skits about the 142-yearold holiday and the importance of planting trees.

The national holiday isn’t until Friday, but city officials celebrated its 2014 Arbor Day Celebration on Monday, with Joliet Mayor Tom Giarrante making an appearance to explain to students about the importance of trees in Joliet.

The city of Joliet has been designated a “Tree City USA” for 23 consecu-

tive years. An annual Arbor Day celebration is one of the requirements. Approved cities also spend at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and maintain a tree department or board.

Students also chose from Swamp White Oak, White pine and Red Splendor Crabapple tree saplings to take home and plant with their parents.

The idea of a tree-planting holiday was first proposed

by J. Sterling Morton, one of the first pioneers in Nebraska. The first observance of Arbor Day was April 10, 1872, when more than one million trees were planted.

Lockport road construction begins this May

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Gougar Road and 147th Street in Lockport will be closed for about five months to make way for road improvements.

Construction will begin May 1 and is set to end Oct. 1, according to a Lockport news release. Roadway improvements will include widening and reconstruction of a portion of the older section of Gougar Road, north of 151st

Street. The roads are near Heritage Crossing business park.

“This is really connecting the business parks between those east and west roads,” City Administrator Ben Benson said.

He said the construction might take less than five months.

Improvements also will include a connection of the newer and older sections of Gougar Road to form a continuous route from 143rd to

151st Street. There will be reconstruction and widening of a portion of 147th Street between Gougar Road and Lemont Road.

Gougar Road will be closed north of 151st Street and 147th Street west of Lemont Road.

Traffic will be detoured using South Creme Road.

A traffic control plan showing proposed detour routes is available for review.

City workers also plan to do reconstruction at Read Street, Summit Drive and Runyan Drive. A storm sewer project has been planned for roads near Third Street, Summit Drive and Seventh Street.

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com CRETE TOWNSHIP – A 2-year-old boy nearly drowned in a Crete Township pond Saturday afternoon.

Will County Sheriff’s police said the boy and other children had been playing inside a house on Gaisor Drive while their caregiver and other adults were putting mulch down outside.

Spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said a young girl noticed her brother had walked out the door into the back-

yard and went to tell the caregiver.

“The boy was found facedown in the pond. Two adults pulled him out and started CPR,” Hoffmeyer said. They also called 911, but drove the boy to St. Margaret’s Hospital in Dyer, Ind., instead of waiting for an ambulance.

The child was later airlifted to University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition.

Hoffmeyer said investigators were told by hospital staff Monday morning that the boy is expected to recover.

Derrick D. Williams, 35, pleaded guilty Monday to one count of violating the state’s sex offender registration requirements in exchange for a second charge of living within a playground zone being

dropped.

On Feb. 15, Joliet police went to Williams’ listed address in the 1200 block of Lime Street and spoke with his father, prosecutors told Judge Edward Burmilla.

Williams’ father told them his son had been staying with his mother in the 1000 block of Gardner Street, which is where officers found Williams.

Williams was convicted of aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a 14-year-old victim in Will County when he was 21.

• Justin T. Brown, 19, of the 200 block of Aux Sable Drive in Minooka, was arrested by state police Saturday on charges of delivery of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

No one was injured in that crash and police followed the car to westbound Interstate 80.

“When the vehicle crossed into the opposite [eastbound] lanes the pursuit was terminated in the interest of public safety,” Roechner said.

Roechner said Monday police were trying to contact the vehicle’s registered owner in Chicago.

Sex offender gets two years for giving wrong address

JOLIET – A shoplifter crashed into a car and drove into oncoming traffic on the interstate to flee from police Sunday.

Cmdr. Al Roechner said a black man in his 30s with dreadlocks was seen taking items from Kmart, 1801 W.

Jefferson St. According to reports, the man took $1,000 worth of Prilosec, Rogaine and Crest Whitening Strips before running out to a silver 2005 Dodge Magnum.

“Security chased him to the Magnum that had another person inside and the vehicle drove off and struck another at Jefferson Street and Larkin Avenue,” Roechner said.

Slammers go to City Hall this week GM gives bright outlook on 2014 season

The big news this year is the addition of a beer garden, a kids-eat-free policy on Sundays and another food feature that will be announced Thursday, said Chris Franklin, general manager of the Slammers.

Franklin and the team’s owners will provide an update on ticket prices, concessions and stadium conditions when they appear before the City of Joliet Baseball Committee at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at City Hall. Committee members include Mayor Tom Gi-

arrante, Councilwoman Jan Quillman and Councilman Terry Morris.

“We’re already up on season ticket sales, attendance and sponsorships this year,” Franklin said. “Things are definitely moving in the right direction.

The newest addition to Silver Cross Field will be a beer garden featuring more than 60 beers. The venue will feature an all-you-can-eat menu of cheeseburgers, hot dogs, bratwurst, pulled pork sandwiches, homemade potato chips, popcorn and soft drinks.

Beer garden tickets are $38, and include food and five beer vouchers. Tickets without the beer vouchers are $33.

Mayor waiting for answers on mailer

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – It has been more than a month since the primary elections, but Mayor Rick Chapman is still looking for answers from the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office about who mailed out an attack flyer that used his personal information.

“I’m getting a little irritated,” Chapman said, adding that he has sent multiple emails and calls to the office.

“It’s been a month and I’m not hearing anything back.”

weekend before the March 18 primary elections, a mailer was sent out to residents that attacked Plainfield businessman’s Mark Batinick, Chapman’s opponent in the 3-way race for the 97th District state representative seat.

The mailer contained

Chapman’s name and information, but Chapman said he never sent it out.

While Batinick and opponent Amanda Mancke, an Oswego teacher, bashed each other through ads funded with contributions, Chapman ran his campaign on a principle of no negative advertisements and refused money from political action committees.

Batinick eventually won the election and will now face his Democrat opponent, Dennis Grosskopf in the November elections. But he said he knew something was wrong

when the mailer went out.

“It didn’t seem like him,” Batinick said.

Chapman filed a complaint with the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office, which put an investigator on the case to see who sent the mailer.

Charles Pelkie, spokesman for the Will County State’s Attorney’s office, said the investigation is still ongoing, so details on the investigation and the time it has taken were not available.

“We received [Chapman’s] information,” Pelkie said.

“We’re moving forward with this information and we’ll

contact [him] if we have the need for more.”

Batinick said he wants to see what happens with the state’s attorney before becoming involved.

“It basically sounds like it’s frustrating it hasn’t gone anywhere yet,” Batinick said.

“I was going to let the mayor take the lead on it.”

Chapman said he just wants to know if the state’s attorney’s office can or can’t find the culprit.

“If they can’t, then Mr. Batinick and me would try to find out on our own,” Chapman said.

By AYE AYE WIN The Associated Press YANGON, Myanmar – Win Tin, a prominent journalist who became Myanmar’s longest-serving political prisoner after challenging military rule by co-founding the National League for Democracy, died Monday. He was 85.

He had been hospitalized with respiratory problems since March 12 and died at Yangon General Hospital.

A former newspaper editor, Win Tin was a close aide to opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, another founder in 1988 of the pro-democracy party. In 1989, she was put under house arrest and Win Tin was sent to prison for his political activities. His sentence was extended twice for various reasons, the second time for writing a letter to the United Nations.

Colleagues and admirers paid tribute to the feisty writer and activist, with Suu Kyi

sending a handwritten note for his funeral service which was also posted on her Facebook page in her capacity as the party’s chairwoman.

“I pay my respects to Saya U Win Tin for raising the dignity of the NLD, Burmese politics, the country and mankind,” she wrote, using Myanmar’s former name of Burma.

“Saya” means “teacher,” and is a respectful way of referring to one’s mentor.

NLD spokesman Nyan Win described Win Tin as “a great pillar of strength.”

Ko Ko Gyi, a member of a younger generation of activists who spearheaded the country’s unsuccessful 1988 pro-democracy uprising, said he and colleagues were inspired by Win Tin’s writings.

“He was a great strength to all of us and his continuous support to the democratic movement will never be forgotten,” said Ko Ko Gyi, who also was a long-serving political prisoner. “His strength in

challenging the military dictatorship was exemplary and his courage in facing illness was admirable.”

While incarcerated, Win Tin received several international press freedom awards, and suffered from ill health, including heart problems, high blood pressure and inflammation of the spine. In his book titled “What’s that?

A human hell,” published in 2010, he gave a vivid description of prison life – how he endured torture, was denied medical care, and fed only rice and boiled vegetables.

While in prison, Win Tin wrote poems on the walls of his cell with ink made of brick powder and water, according to supporters who visited him. After he was released, he kept wearing his blue prison shirt as a sign of protest against military rule.

Freed in a general amnesty of prisoners in 2008, he continued working with the NLD through Myanmar’s transi-

tion from military rule to an elected – though army-dominated – government in 2011.

He continued to call on the military to relinquish power, saying democracy would never come to Myanmar as long as the military continued to dominate the political landscape. He also started a foundation to give assistance to current and former political prisoners.

It was widely believed that the military feared Win Tin because of his strong intellect, believing he was linked to the country’s former communist party and was advising Suu Kyi on political strategy and tactics.

“Immediately after his arrest, U Win Tin was kept without food and sleep for three days,” Suu Kyi wrote about his imprisonment, saying they were trying “to force him to admit that he was my adviser, in other words, my puppet master.

“A man of courage and in-

tegrity, Win Tin would not be intimidated into making false confessions.”

But the outspoken Win Tin was sometimes critical of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Suu Kyi’s tactics in dealing with the military, chiding her for her conciliatory relationship with its leaders. Despite their differences of opinion, he said he respected her commitment to democracy.

“As newspaper editor, author, poet, and for nearly two decades, political prisoner, U Win Tin was a man of rare integrity and courage, a man who dedicated his life to democratic principles, particularly the principle of press freedom, even under enormous hardship,” U.S. Ambassador Derek Mitchell said in a statement.

“His example will continue to serve as an inspiration to all those everywhere who are dedicated to seeking and speaking the truth in the face of injustice,” Mitchell said.

Mayors’ group pushes for pension reform

By SOPHIA TAREEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Illinois mayors from Rockford to Peoria reiterated their call Monday for lawmakers to overhaul local police and fire pension systems to avoid strains on municipal budgets, but there were few signs the Legislature would take up the issue anytime soon.

No legislation has been drafted, talks are still in preliminary stages and several mayors expressed skepticism they’d get a plan approved in an election year. The Legislature only recently approved a plan for two of Chicago’s systems after grappling for years with how to address the state’s nearly $100 billion in unfunded pension liability.

But during a news conference Monday the mayors made it clear they wanted in on the discussions, especially after

lawmakers approved legislation for Chicago’s municipal employees and laborers. The city has yet to address the $10 billion shortfall in police and fire retirement system funds.

Mayors from Chicago’s suburbs and elsewhere described a phenomenon familiar to Illinoisans: Rising pension costs are crowding out funding for other services and municipalities are dealing with major cutbacks.

“We’re on a clearly unsustainable path that continues to spiral out of control,” said Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis, who called it the city’s biggest financial issue.

Illinois has the worst-funded pension system nationwide, largely because lawmakers skipped or shorted payments for years. The shortfall has led to repeated downgrades from credit rating agencies and criticism from business groups.

The issue dominated lawmakers’ agendas last year, and they approved a new law, which essentially cuts benefits for state workers and retirees. Unions fought the measure and have filed several lawsuits challenging its constitutionality.

Pension programs are created by state law, so only state legislators can make changes.

The mayors said they’d like their plan to echo what the state did. Their suggestions included raising the retirement age and lowering annual costof-living adjustments.

However, approving a plan before lawmakers adjourn on May 31 will be difficult. Legislators have to approve a budget by then and face the question of what to do when a temporary income tax increase rolls back in January and leaves a roughly $1.6 billion revenue dip. Gov. Minority Leader Jim Durkin of Western Springs said the state cannot afford the investment when Illinois owes $7 billion in overdue bills and has a $100 billion deficit in its employee pension programs.

“It’s ironic that Democrats, who have been threatening drastic cuts in education and other state services if the ‘temporary’ income tax is allowed to expire, now want to spend $100 million in public funds

on the Obama presidential library,” Durkin said in a prepared statement. “Where is this money going to come from?”

Gov. Pat Quinn has proposed making a 2011 income tax hike, set to roll back next year, permanent to avoid severe budget cuts.

The Obama library measure’s sponsor, House Speaker Michael Madigan, a Chicago Democrat, has pointed out that the funding would be money borrowed for the purpose of building the library, not funds coming out of operational expenses.

He said a source of the money, and a way to pay it back, has yet to be determined, but it could be included in a new long-term, statewide construction program. A $31 billion, five-year program financed

with increased liquor and candy taxes expires this year.

Chicago, where Obama began his political career, wants to host his presidential papers. Hawaii, where he grew up, and New York, where he went to college, also expect to make bids to build the library in those states.

Democrats hold a slim advantage on the Madigan-controlled House Executive Committee, which approved the $100 million proposal last week with no Republicans in attendance. A committee member, Rep. Ed Sullivan, a Mundelein Republican, had planned to challenge that vote as a violation of House rules.

But Madigan spokesman Steve Brown said Monday the matter would go again before the House Executive Committee on April 30.

But he said the goal was to get a deal before the end of the spring session.

Unions contend the plan the state approved is unconstitu-

tional and mayors’ efforts are a way to avoid making required contributions to pension funds.

State law will require cities to make required contribution increases in 2016 or the state will do so by diverting state grant money to cities into pension funds. Mayors say they’ll have to make steep cuts to meet pension obligations.

State statistics show police and fire retirement funds have an average of 55 percent of the money needed, down 20 percent the past two decades. Mayors claim part of the problem has been legislator-approved “pension sweeteners” with no additional money to pay for them.

Illinois Police Benevolent and Protective Association director Sean Smoot said public safety officials face risks each day and should receive their constitutionally-protected benefits.

STATE BRIEFS Money for Lake Michigan shoreline projects CHICAGO – The state of Illinois has announced $1.6 million for more than two dozen environmental and education projects aimed at helping to conserve the Lake Michigan shoreline.

The projects will be funded through the Illinois Coastal Management Program. It was formed in 2012 to help protect Illinois’ 63-mile Lake Michigan shoreline.

The coastal program’s grants are federally funded.

Among the 26 projects receiving money is a coastal signage and lecture series at Loyola University Chicago. Several programs are directed at school children to help them understand the importance of coastal ecology.

The director of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Marc Miller, said the projects will not only help protect and restore critical habitat; he said

they’ll also help educate the next generation of conservationists.

Jeff Tweedy, Nickel Creek to play Taste of Chicago CHICAGO – Jeff Tweedy, Nickel Creek, Emmylou Harris and Janelle Monae will headline this year’s Taste of Chicago.

Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events on Monday released the list of performers for the annual food festival in Grant Park along Lake Michigan.

U.S. weighs curbing deportations

By ERICA WERNER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson is weighing limiting deportations of immigrants living in the U.S. illegally who don’t have serious criminal records, according to two people with knowledge of his deliberations.

The change, if adopted following an ongoing review ordered by President Barack Obama, could shield tens of thousands of immigrants now removed each year solely because they committed repeat immigration violations, such as re-entering the country illegally after having been deported, failing to comply with a de-

portation order or missing an immigration court date.

However, it would fall short of the sweeping changes sought by activists. They want Obama to expand a two-year-old program that grants work permits to certain immigrants brought here illegally as children to include other groups, such as the parents of any children born in the U.S. John Sandweg, who served until February as acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said he had promoted the policy change for immigrants without serious criminal records before his departure and that it was being weighed by Johnson. An immigration advocate who’s

discussed the review with the administration also confirmed the change was under consideration. The advocate spoke on condition of anonymity because the proceedings are confidential.

“Any report of specific considerations at this time would be premature,” Clark Stevens, a spokesman for the Homeland Security Department, said Monday. Stevens said Johnson “has undergone a very rigorous and inclusive process to best inform the review,” including seeking input from people within DHS as well as lawmakers of both parties, and other stakeholders.

Poll: Some Americans question universe began with Big Bang

By JENNIFER AGIESTA and SETH BORENSTEIN The Associated Press WASHINGTON – While scientists believe the universe began with a Big Bang, most Americans put a big question mark on the concept, an Associated Press-GfK poll found.

Yet when it comes to smoking causing cancer or that a genetic code determines who we are, the doubts disappear.

When considering concepts scientists consider truths, Americans have more skepticism than confidence in those that are farther away from our bodies in scope and time: global warming, the age of the Earth and evolution and especially the Big Bang from 13.8 billion years ago.

Rather than quizzing scientific knowledge, the survey asked people to rate their confidence in several statements about science and medicine.

On some, there’s broad acceptance. Just 4 percent doubt that smoking causes cancer,

And scientists know they’ve got the shakiest leg in the triangle.

The potential changes come as Johnson proceeds with a review ordered by Obama on how to make deportation policy more humane. With comprehensive immigration legislation stalled in the House after passing the Senate last year, Obama has come under intense pressure to stem deportations, which have neared 2 million on his watch, and allow more of the 11.5 million immigrants living illegally in the U.S. to stay.

NATION BRIEF Stowaway teen stirs concern about security SAN JOSE, Calif. – A 16-year-old boy scrambled over an airport fence, crossed a tarmac and climbed into a jetliner’s wheel well, then flew for five freezing hours to Hawaii – a misadventure that stirred concern about possible weak spots in the security system that protects the nation’s airline fleet.

The boy hopped out of the wheel well of a Boeing 767 on the Maui airport tarmac Sunday. Authorities found him wandering around the airport grounds with no identification. He was questioned by

the FBI and taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he was found to be unharmed.

It was not immediately clear how the boy stayed alive in the unpressurized space, where temperatures at cruising altitude can fall well below zero and the air is too thin for humans to stay conscious. An FAA study of stowaways found that some went into a hibernation-like state.

The boy climbed over during the night, “under the cover of darkness,” San Jose airport spokeswoman Rosemary Barnes said Monday.

By 1948, seven years after Maciel founded the order, the Holy See had documents from Vatican-appointed envoys and bishops in Mexico and Spain questioning the legitimacy of Maciel’s ordination (by his uncle, after Maciel was expelled by a series of seminaries), noting the questionable legal foundation of his order and flagging his “totalitarian” behavior and spiritual violations of his young seminarians.

The documents show the Holy See was well aware of Maciel’s drug abuse, sexual abuse and financial improprieties as early as 1956, when it ordered an initial investigation and suspended him for two years to kick a morphine habit.

Yet for decades, Rome looked the other way, thanks to Maciel’s ability to keep his own priests quiet, his foresight to place trusted Legion priests in key Vatican offices and his careful cultivation of Vatican cardinals, Mexican bishops and wealthy, powerful lay Catholics. Vatican officials were impressed instead by the orthodoxy of his priests and Maciel’s ability to attract new vocations and donations.

John Paul, who in 1994 praised Maciel as an “efficacious guide to youth,” wasn’t alone in being duped. His top advisers were some of Maciel’s fiercest supporters, convinced that the accusations against

him were the typical “calumnies” hurled at the greatest of saints. They were swayed instead by numerous testimonies from bishops and others of his greatness – documentation which also features in the Vatican archives, which were leaked and put online in 2012 by some of his Mexican victims.

Two years after the Vatican sentenced Maciel to a lifetime of penance and prayer for sexually abusing his seminarians, John Paul’s No. 2, Cardinal Angelo Sodano, in 2008 was still praising the spirit of Maciel and his “humility” in stepping aside after the Vatican finally confronted him with the accusations.

In his 2013 book “I Lived With a Saint,” John Paul’s longtime Polish aide, Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, said the Pope knew “nothing, absolutely nothing” about Maciel’s misdeeds.

Mexican president to head homage to late Colombian laureate

EDUARDO CASTILLO The Associated Press MEXICO CITY – The ashes of Gabriel Garcia Marquez were taken Monday to Mexico City’s majestic Palace of Fine Arts, where thousands of admiring readers began paying tribute to the Colombian Nobel Laureate considered one of the greatest Spanish-language authors of all time.

The presidents of Mexico and Colombia were expected at the late-afternoon ceremony four days after the death of the 87-year-old writer. GarGarcia cia Marquez’s Marquez birthplace, the town of Aracataca on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, was holding a symbolic funeral.

Colombia also planned a marathon reading this week of Garcia Marquez’s work “No One Writes to the Colonel.”

In Aracataca, Colombia, residents planned to walk from Garcia Marquez’s childhood home, now a museum dedicated to his life and work, to the church in the center of town, then to the town cemetery and back to the museum.

Jorge Polo Camargo, who organized the event in Colombia, said mourners would carry hundreds of yellow paper butterflies, a reference to the character Mauricio Babilonia, who was always trailed by a cloud of yellow butterflies. Yellow was Garcia Marquez’s favorite color.

Family members have not yet announced what they plan to do with his ashes. Colombia has said it would like at least some of the ashes to go to his homeland.

VATICAN CITY – Pope John Paul II is rightly credited with having helped bring down communism, of inspiring a new generation of Catholics with a globe-trotting papacy and of explaining church teaching on a range of hot-button issues as Christianity entered its third millennium.

But the sexual abuse scandal that festered under his watch remains a stain on his legacy.

John Paul and his top advisers failed to grasp the severity of the abuse problem until very late in his 26-year papacy, even though U.S. bishops had been petitioning the Holy See since the late-1980s for a faster way to defrock pedophile priests.

The experience of John Paul in Poland under communist and Nazi rule, where innocent priests were often

discredited by trumped-up accusations, is believed to have influenced his general defensiveness of the clergy. The exodus of clergy after the turbulent 1960s similarly made him want to hold onto the priests he still had.

Pope Francis has inherited John Paul’s most notorious failure on the sex abuse front – the Legion of Christ order, which John Paul and his top advisers held up as a model.

Francis, who will canonize John Paul on Sunday, must decide whether to sign off on the Vatican’s three-year reform project, imposed after the Legion admitted that its late founder sexually abused his seminarians and fathered three children.

Yet the Legion’s 2009 admission about the Rev. Marcial Maciel’s double life was by no means news to the Vatican.

Mental health programs need some strengthening Programs to help U.S. servicemen and women suffering from mental challenges, including post-traumatic stress disorder, have been around for decades. Clearly, more effort needs to be put into them.

After Army Spc. Ivan Lopez shot and killed three people and wounded 16 others before killing himself at Fort Hood, Texas, recently, the media focused again on mental illness in the military. Lopez was being treated for mental illness.

But most service members coping with psychological challenges are no threat to others.

Instead, some take their own lives. We owe it to them to find better ways of surviving confrontations with their mental demons.

Nearly one in every five men and women who enlist in the military suffers from common mental illnesses such as depression before they sign up.

The stress of service can aggravate those challenges.

More needs to be done to help servicemen and women who become threats to themselves and others. The Pentagon should make that a top priority.

Poll numbers paint Madigan unfavorably A poll taken for Rasmussen Reports earlier this month found that Gov. Pat Quinn’s unfavorable rating was 55 percent.

That’s pretty darned bad, and perhaps the worst in the nation. But Gov. Quinn ain’t got nothing on Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan.

A new Capitol Fax/We Ask America poll found Madigan’s unfavorable rating to be an almost mind-boggling 65 percent.

Just 20 percent of likely voters had a favorable impression of the longtime House Speaker. Years of negative publicity, the state’s many, many problems, the Republican Party’s decades-long accusations that he’s holding the state back and Madigan’s historically long tenure are all undoubt-

edly driving these horrible numbers.

According to the poll, 55 percent of respondents would be less likely to vote for a local candidate if that candidate was supported

by Madigan. That number alone ought to give the House Republicans reason to hope. All of Madigan’s candidates could be hurt this year because of the mere fact that Madigan is backing a Democrat.

When asked whether Madigan has been a help or a hindrance to the state’s economic and fiscal recovery, 65 percent said he’s been a hindrance, while just 20 percent said he’s been a help.

Ouch.

Even Democrats don’t like the guy. Fifty percent of Democrats say they have

VIEWS Rich Miller an unfavorable view of Madigan, versus 30 percent who view him in a favorable light.

According to the poll, a plurality of 38 percent of Democrats said they’d be less likely to vote for a Madigan-backed candidate, with 33 percent saying they’d be more likely and 29 percent saying it would make no difference.

And a majority of 51 percent of Democrats said Madigan has been a hindrance to the state’s recovery, with just 31 percent saying he’s been a help, and the rest, 18 percent, saying

he hadn’t made a difference either way.

Men are more likely to dislike Madigan than women. Seventy percent of men (versus 60 percent of women) view him unfavorably. Sixty-three percent of men (versus a plurality of 48 percent of women) would be less likely to support a Madigan-backed candidate. And an overwhelming 72 percent of men (58 percent of women) think Madigan has been a hindrance to the state’s economic and fiscal recovery.

Chicagoans don’t much care for Madigan, either, but their ire pales in comparison to what the rest of the state thinks of him. Fifty-seven percent of Chicagoans have an unfavorable opinion of Madigan, while 63 percent of suburban Cook County

voters, 66 percent of downstaters and 72 percent of collar county residents have an unfavorable opinion of the longest serving House Speaker in Illinois history.

A plurality of 36 percent of Chicagoans would be less likely to vote for a Madigan-backed candidate (34 percent would be more likely), while 60 percent of suburban Cook and downstaters and 62 percent of collar county voters would be less likely to vote for such a candidate.

The poll of 836 likely voters was taken April 14 and had a margin of error of ± 3.4 percent.

JOLIET – Competitions are often decided by which team makes the most of its opportunities and the fewest mistakes.

In a close match, the two aspects are magnified.

Exhibit A came Monday during Joliet West’s boys volleyball match-up against Lincoln-Way Central. West had 11 aces and took advantage of 19 Central service errors during a 25-23, 25-20 Southwest Suburban Conference victory.

The win snapped a twomatch losing streak for the Tigers (10-5, 1-1). Central fell to 12-4, 1-1.

“I’ve always said let the other team makes mistakes,” West coach Jason Herrmann said.

“We’re playing good volleyball and if we can minimize our errors, the other team has to be perfect.”

“We had 19 service errors and got aced 11 times,” Central coach Brian Danielson said. “We came in here lackadaisical. I don’t know what it was. Spring break? A Monday game?”

The Tigers had a lot to do with it. Senior setter Noah Slowik had 20 assists, Brian Lyman was credited with eight kills and Kyler VanRossum-O’Connell posted 11 digs.

Juwann Jackson and Lyman each had three aces.

“Everyone did a great job tonight,” Slowik said. “We really spread the ball around a lot.

Some guys made the best plays of their careers, and we need that every night. We showed we can do it.”

Armani Foster and Luke VanEck each had five kills.

“When we are digging, passing and setting like we did today, we can run a pretty good offense,” Herrmann said.

“Things are starting to fall into place and it’s been a good season for us so far.”

A sideout and Lincoln-Way Central error allowed West to take a 19-16 lead, forcing a Knights’ timeout. Back-to-back kills by Adam Sargis sliced the lead to 19-18. A pair of Central hitting errors allowed West to take a 23-21 lead. A Knights hit-

“Our setter (Slowik) is doing a nice job keeping it balanced,” Herrmann said. “He’s a senior

setter in this offense for three years. Guys are stepping up and he’s finding them.”

“We started the season really good, we lost two in a row last week and we really needed this one,” Slowik said. “Losing to JCA and Andrew stung a little bit.”

“They came in here, played well and wanted to win it,” Danielson said. “They took it to us.”

Sargis’ eight kills and Mitch Severson’s 12 digs led the Knights in those categories.

“They have beaten some good teams in our area, so this is a good win for us,” Herrmann said. “We’re halfway through the season. Now, we need to stay fresh and stay focused.”

That’s the position Lincoln-Way West’s boys volleyball squad finds itself in following Monday’s match at Joliet Central, where it recorded its 14th straight victory.

The Warriors used 10 kills from Jon Adlington and five kills and 13 assists from Michael Wexter to help it capture a 25-17, 25-12 triumph over the Steelmen.

“The things that we’re working on in practice are definitely applied in our games and that’s fun to watch,” West coach Rory Olson said. “The guys have great energy for the game and the really enjoy it. And they’re very competitive and they hold

a 15-6 lead and the hosts were unable to significantly narrow the gap against their more-experienced opponents.

“We’re just inconsistent right now,” Steelmen coach Zak Krumlinde said. “We’re doing some things really nicely. Defensively we’re getting better and we made some nice defensive plays and that translated into some offensive points. We just need to get into some consistent habits. The guys are

working hard, but it’s just difficult with some of the inexperience that we have compared to the other teams in our conference.”

The Warriors also received five kills from Scott Christensen plus 10 digs from Jake Martin and five digs from Justin Baker.

West’s attack gave the Steelmen problems since Wexter effectively distributed the ball to a variety of hitters while also alertly collecting a few kills of his own.

“This is our best start and we keep playing well every time that we go out,” Wexter said. “Everyone really does their part really well and knows what they need to do to get the job done. I expected us to do pretty well since we had most of our key players back. I’m real happy with our passing, which has been phenomenal. I can’t ask for anything more from my

passers since they give me the opportunity to run whatever I want.”

The Steelmen received two kills apiece from Chris Vergel and Jarvis Northington while Zack Watts chipped in with a couple of blocks and both Nick Weisfus and Travionte Gooch handled the setting duties.

While Central looks to continue to make improvements, the Warriors face another big test Wednesday when they host Joliet West, who they defeated earlier this season in the title match of the Tigers’ Invite.

“We’ve been jelling very well together and having a lot of fun on the court,” Adlington said. “I like all of the potential that we have since we have a lot of talented guys on the team. There’s definitely a lot of pressure on us to do well. The key to how well we’re doing is our team chemistry. We never get down on each other and that helps a lot.”

themselves to a high standard at practice every day.

“Our libero Jake Martin has been doing a great job. He reads things extremely well and he’s there when someone can’t get to a ball. We have a balanced team with six seniors, six juniors and a sophomore and it’s good to see them jell like they have. This start is exciting for our guys and says a lot about their drive and ability to apply things.”

West used early runs in each set to build up decisive advantages over the Steelmen (3-11), who did a better job in the opener of keeping things close between the teams.

“We were next-door neighbors,” Evans said.

“We always played baseball together, whenever we could find a field. We played football, basketball and ran track in high school. “(Forward John) Tolle (who traveled in from Virginia for the event), Al and I were National Honor Society students. I think that helped us on the court.”

“When you saw one of us, you saw the other,” Crusoe said. “We were like twins.”

Evans assumed the point guard role, while Crusoe did more scoring. In truth, however, their talents made them

interchangeable.

Crusoe was an all-stater and made the all-tournament team at state after scoring 27 points in a thrilling 74-72 quarterfinal loss to Belleville.

He went on play at Bradley.

Evans scored 50 points in a game at Joliet Junior College, a school record that lasted decades, before moving on to play at Valparaiso.

“Our team had quickness and heart,” Crusoe said of the ’66 Steelmen. “Success breeds success, and as we got better, we could see the vision, that we could be good enough to make the sectional and even the supersectional.”

Central won the regional over top seed Lockport, knocked off LaSalle-Peru and Ottawa, two solid teams in their own right, in the Ottawa Sectional and whipped mighty Pekin, 63-50, in the Peoria Supersectional.

There was no 3-point shot in those days. Crusoe and Evans certainly could have benefited because both had range, but how many points

they scored never was their top priority.

“The 3 definitely changed the game,” Crusoe said. “It also took emphasis away from defense.

“With our team, we concentrated more on defense than the rest of the game.

The honor for us came from shutting down good players rather than seeing how many points we could score.”

Thornton, led by 6-foot8 center Jim Ard, a future University of Cincinnati and Boston Celtics star, beat Galesburg in the ’66 state championship game.

Ard, whose father was in the military, attended Joliet Central early in his high school career, but transferred to Thornton when his family moved.

“That was too bad,” Crusoe said. “And if our school hadn’t split (East and West came into existence in 1964), we still could have won state.

“I was in Milwaukee once and saw Jim (Ard) play against the Bucks when he

was with the Celtics. He saw me and said, ‘Hi, Mr. Crusoe.’

I told him, ‘You didn’t have to say that.’ ” Or, maybe he did. That’s the level of respect players such as Crusoe and Evans commanded.

The other ’66 Steelmen were Bill Alexander at center, Tolle and Bill Arrington at forward plus reserves Warren Wallace, Jim Brenczewski, Reuben Arthur, Rick Goepper, Warren Wallace, Dave Herman, Bill Hooper, Joe Tomasino and Bob Hewlett.

The signature video presentation at the Night of Champions was fun, as usual.

Other honorees were Central volleyball players Breanne Shaw (St. Francis) and Kim Vertin (Lewis) as Rookies of the Year, athletic director Steve Locke as Steelman of the Year, athletic director Steve Millsaps as Tiger of the Year, distance running coach Doug Cherry as Coach of the Year and former Central wrestlers Scott and Mark Trizzino.

American man wins race as more than 30,000 compete

Others were out to prove something to the world about their sport, the city or their country. And some wanted to prove something to themselves.

With the names of the victims scrawled on their bodies or their race bibs, more than 32,000 people ran in the Boston Marathon on Monday in

a powerful show of defiance a year after the deadly bombing.

“We’re marathon runners.

We know how to endure,” said Dennis Murray, a 62-year-old health care administrator from Atlanta who finished just before the explosions last year and came back to run again.

“When they try to take our freedom and our democracy, we come back stronger.”

last year killed three people and wounded more than 260 in a spectacle of torn limbs, acrid smoke and broken glass.

But the city vowed to return even stronger, and the victory

by Meb Keflezighi – the first American in 31 years to win the men’s race – helped deliver on that promise.

On Twitter, President Barack Obama congratulated Keflezighi and Shalane Flanagan, the top American finisher among the women, “for making American proud!”

“All of today’s runners showed the world the meaning of #BostonStrong,” Obama wrote.

The race was held under extraordinary security, including 100 new surveillance cameras, more than 90 bomb-sniffing dogs and officers posted on roofs.

As runners continued to drag themselves across the finish line in the late afternoon,

more than six hours into the race, state emergency officials reported no security threats other than some unattended bags.

Kenya’s Rita Jeptoo won the women’s race in a course-record 2 hours, 18 minutes, 57 seconds, defending the title she won last year but could not celebrate because of the tragedy.

Keflezighi, who did not run last year because of an injury, won the main event this year in 2:08:37. A 38-year-old U.S. citizen who emigrated from Eritrea as a boy, Keflezighi wrote the names of the three dead on his bib along with that of the MIT police officer killed during the manhunt.

As he was presented with the trophy and golden laurel wreath, “The Star-Spangled Banner” echoed over Boylston Street, where the explosions rang out a year ago.

“I came as a refugee, and

the United States gave me hope,” said Keflezighi, who was welcomed by fans chanting “U.S.A.!” “This is probably the most meaningful victory for an American, because of what happened last year.”

At 2:49 p.m., the time of the first explosion, the crowd at the finish line observed a moment of silence – then broke into some of the loudest cheers of the day, with whooping, clapping and the clanging of cowbells.

This year’s starting field of 32,408 included 600 people who were given special invitations for those who were “profoundly impacted” by the attacks, and almost 5,000 runners who were stopped on the course last year when the bombs went off.

“Today, when I got to that point, I said, ‘I have to do some unfinished business,’ ” said runner Vicki Schmidt, 52, of Nashville, Tenn.

A state basketball tournament is a different animal these days.

The single-class system went by the boards in the early 1970s, and since then, more classes have been added in most Illinois high school sports.

That contributes to many of our most cherished memories coming from the “old days.” Take the 1965-66 Joliet Central boys basketball team, for example.

The ’66 Steelmen were cited at last week’s 10th annual Joliet Township Athletic Booster Club Night of Champions at the IBEW 176 Hall on NE Frontage Road.

They did not win the state.

But what they accomplished with relatively little size, against the strong competition of that era, puts them in the discussion of the most exciting teams this area has seen.

It all began with the marvelous guard combination of Al Crusoe and Marv Evans.

That turned out the be Sycamore, Morris’ competitor Monday in a Northern Illinois Big 12 East match in Morris.

“It was overcast when we left, but we did not hit rain until we got about four or five minutes from Route 80, but it really rained here,” Sycamore coach Dave Lichamer said.

“That’s for sure.”

Oftentimes it rained hard.

“In that type of torrential downpour, it’s all about who is not going to make the mistakes,” Lichamer said of game-time strategy.

Getting three second-half goals, the Spartans broke through a scoreless halftime to claim a 3-0 road win.

“We knew that as long as there wasn’t lightning, we were going to play,” Morris coach Kristen Porter said. “I was telling the girls that this was their chance to go out, be super-aggressive and to have some fun. It was raining, and I knew it was going to be sloppy. I told them to just have fun and see what we could do.”

What transpired was 40 minutes of scoreless soccer in the first half.

“Really what you have to focus on is the way that the ball is going to be moving on the field,” Lichamer said.

“Understanding the skip and understanding if you have to

change your game plan a little because there is stuff like pushing forward that is going to be either playing right through or straight to the keeper or even out of bounds.”

Sycamore (6-1-1, 2-0-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) had just three shots on goal in the first half, and Morris had two against winning goalkeeper Drew Moulton.

“I thought the first half of the game was great. (Morris keeper) Brooklyn Enger did a great job in goal,” Porter said.

“We had a couple of close calls, but the big thing was that we were playing with Sycamore.

They are one of the top teams in our conference. We came up with a different defensive formation for them that we usually don’t run. So, it didn’t

give us a lot of offense.”

In addition to playing one of the top teams in the conference, nursing injuries, illnesses and vacation absences also took its toll on Morris (33-1) in the second half.

“We adjusted our focus a little bit in what we needed to do to get the ball in the net,” Lichamer said. “Making sure we had numbers going forward. That was our biggest adjustment.”

Because of the torrential downpour at halftime, the intermission was shortened to about five minutes before the two teams agreed to resume play.

“It was a pretty short halftime, but coach gave us a pretty good pep talk,” Sycamore’s Alyssa Hemmerich said. “He

put it in perspective to us that we needed to get our heads in the game because it was a conference game. He pretty much talked us up and we put our head in the game when we needed to.”

Sycamore got its first goal from Alexis Divita in the 42nd minute, and then Emmerich scored about eight minutes later. Mallory Wolf then scored the final goal off a rebound shot from Hemmerich.

“The person who crossed it, Rachel Thurwanger, has a pretty good foot, so I knew where it was going to go,” Emmerich said. “It’s happened before. I just tried to put a head on it, and it hit the post.

Lewis men’s golfers advance to conference match play STAFF REPORTS COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Lewis men’s golf team wrapped up the 54-hole stroke play at the 2014 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Golf Championship in fourth place with a team total 880 (298-282300) on Monday, playing the par-72, 6,897-yard Otter Creek course.

The Flyers advance to the match play portion of the event. In a semifinal Tuesday morning, the No. 4 Flyers will take on top-seeded Indianapolis. The winner will advance to the finals in the afternoon.

Lewis sophomore Robert Dofflemyer III earned All-Conference accolades after he finished tied for fourth with a three-round total of 215 (7470-71).

Junior Jeremy Fraser finished tied for 12th after turning in a 221 (75-68-78) while sophomore Alex Thode (Washington, Iowa/Washington) carded a 222 (73-72-77) for 14th.

As tweets fly, Blackhawks’ young Morin shows #maturity CHICAGO – Blackhawks forward Jeremy Morin finished his morning skate Monday and headed to his locker to change out of his sweat-soaked pads.

Morin knew he wouldn’t need those pads for Game 3 against the St. Louis Blues. The talented 23-year-old remained inactive despite the public pleading of fans and former teammates who called on the Hawks to give him a chance to play.

“Obviously, I want to be in the lineup, and that’s the goal,” said Morin, who shined with the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL. “But, at the same time, I’m excited to be here.”

Two days earlier, one of Morin’s former Rockford teammates had created a stir during the middle of the Game 2 in St. Louis. That player, current Florida Panthers forward Brandon Pirri, had taken to Twitter to express his frustration.

By the time the puck dropped on Game 3 of the Western Conference quarterfinals, Pirri’s message – “#freemorin” – had tallied 1,153 retweets and 745 favorites.

Like it or not, verbal shots had been fired at the Hawks’ decision-makers. Imagine if Devin Hester were to tweet “trestmanstinks” in the middle of a Bears game next fall. Or if Alfonso Soriano were to tweet “#1908” as the Cubs let another game slip away.

Yet none of Pirri’s retweets or favorites came from Hawks coach Joel Quenneville (who is not on Twitter, although his mustache has an account).

Quenneville has the final say in regard to the Hawks’ playoff lineup, and he stuck to his veteran-laden roster in Game 3 rather than inserting Morin for

Maybe Morin appreciated the supportive tweet from his friend and former teammate.

Or maybe it gave him a giant headache.

Within seconds, the answer was clear. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then Morin’s expression was worth a thousand Twitter hashtags. #ohbrother #pleasedropit #nocomment “I don’t have anything to say about that,” Morin said.

It was a smart move by the former second-round draft pick from upstate New York. Perhaps Pirri’s lack of patience was the reason the Hawks shipped him out of town. No player comes ahead of the team on the Hawks, especially when that player is a rookie with loads of potential but little in the way of NHL production.

Morin understands his role as one of the new guys.

He skillfully has balanced the line between wanting to play and gratefully supporting his teammates.

“Everybody here wants to be playing,” Morin said. “It’s just human nature to want to be in the lineup.

“At the same time, supporting your teammates is a different role. It’s just whatever you can do to help the team, whether it’s a practice or something like that. That’s what I’m trying to do. We’re all trying to stay ready and be there for each other.”

It’s a position that even rivals can appreciate.

Blues forward Adam Cracknell split his time during the regular season between the NHL and the AHL, where he played for the Chicago Wolves.

Cracknell earned a spot in the Blues’ playoff lineup and took advantage by scoring the first goal of Game 1.

From his years playing against Morin in the minors, Cracknell said it was clear that the Hawks’ prospect also was capable of making big plays in big moments.

“I’ve played quite a bit against him,” Cracknell said.

“I’ve been in the same situation.

You’re up and down, and you’re kind of in and out of the lineup.”

It’s a tough spot. But it’s better to yo-yo than to not play at all.

“You wait for that phone call,” Cracknell said. “I was in Des Moines, Iowa, a couple of weeks ago. You just sit there and you’re watching hockey and all of a sudden a couple of guys go down and you get the call, and now I’m playing against the Blackhawks in Game 1 and 2.

“You never know when that call will come, but for guys like us, you always have to be ready.

When you’re down, you can’t go on the negative side. You have to stay positive.”

Morin is staying positive and savoring his up-close view of the playoffs.

“Every game is a do-or-die kind of thing,” Morin said.

“Anything for the team.”

Presence Saint Joseph Medical center opens irst Acute Care for the Elderly Unit in Illinois

OLIET – For seniors, even if they are fit, a hospital stay can be fraught with such risks as falls, muscle deterioration and confusion.

But on the eighth floor of Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center – a new unit designed especially for the specific needs of the elderly, the first in Illinois – opened March 21.

The Acute Care for the Elderly unit has 30 single-patient rooms with beds that are lower to the floor, clocks with larger numbers, onfloor pharmacist, handrails, colorful dishes to encourage good appetites, and walkie talkie-like pocket talkers for better communication between patients and staff.

But come June, every single ACE nurse at Presence Center Joseph Medical Center will receive their certification, said director of nursing Annmarie McDonagh. Nationally, less than 1 percent of nurses are geriatric-certified.

“We are very excited by that,” McDonagh said.

McDonagh said hospitalized seniors often have more health problems and different care needs than younger patients. For instance, seniors may take multiple medications; the average number is 14 different medications.

To ensure the various needs of each patient is met, a team of nurses, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists and social workers makes rounds to every room every day.

“I think it is an excellent idea,” said Channahon resident Janet Stefancic, whose husband, Leonard, 79, was in the ACE unit in March for pneumonia. “We didn’t even realize it at first, but you could see it was just

Janet said it was a treat when a volunteer brought the pet therapy dog to her husband’s room. The dog knew just what to do, she said, and went right up to her husband, not to her.

“My husband loves animals,” she said. “He got the biggest bang out of petting that dog.”

Mary DeBerry, of Morris, said her mother, Jean Lorczak of Joliet, benefitted greatly from her time in the ACE unit. This was last fall when the hospital piloted it. Korczak has since passed away, DeBerry a nurse at St. Joseph, said she appreciated the special care her mother received in the unit.

“We called it, ‘Mom’s unit,’ ” DeBerry said. “They encouraged her to walk and to brush her hair and to brush her teeth. It gave her dignity.”

DeBerry said the staff engaged her mother with minor decisions and encouraged her to get up and move, which she felt was very important. The physi-

“People don’t typically lie in bed all day when they’re at home,” DeBerry said.

“One or two days of lying in bed would have weakened her.”

According to a 2011 Journal of Hospital Medicine article, hospital ACE units reduce functional decline of seniors during and after hospitalization. For frail older adults, hospitalization is high risk for poor outcomes, functional decline, delirium, adverse drug events and falls, the article also said.

That’s exactly why the hospital instituted its new ACE unit, Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center gerontologist Dr. Bhavesh Gandhi said. Even if a senior is mentally aware and healthy, and living life just fine, a hospital stay, with its disruptions in sleep and routines, often can invoke delirium or confusion. That, Gandhi said, can lead to a decline in physical function.

“They can become unbalanced and their gait can be impaired, which can lead to falls, which can lead to more hospitalization and surgery,” Gandhi said. “And another cycle of it all.”

Preventing any decline during hospital stays is the all-important goal of ACE units, Gandhi said.

“We focus on prehospital functional status and try to maintain that,” Gandhi said.

“The focus is to send them directly home following their hospital stay, instead of stopping at the nursing home first.”

That’s why getting senior patients up and moving is a big focus on the ACE unit.

It prevents pressure ulcers, common in bed-ridden patients, and helps diagnose movement disorders (such as Parkinson’s disease) or gait disorders.

Because of medical advances, people are living longer; therefore, better geriatric services are needed, Gandhi said. However, he added, hospital stays terrify some seniors and not just because they fear death.

Some of them fear losing their homes and going into a nursing home, Gandhi said.

The goal is to keep older patients feeling unafraid, secure and protected, as well as active mentally, physically and socially.

To this end, the ACE unit offers music therapy, pet therapy, art therapy, game days, manicures and pedicures and even tea parties. Patients are also given “comfort menus” comprised of warm blankets, ear plugs, lip balm, rosaries, hand and foot massages, back rubs at night and afghans made by volunteers.

Minimizing the length of stay is also important.

Gandhi said case managers, social workers, family and the patient are all involved in discharge planning. They work together (with ongoing conversations) on the procedures and care being done in the unit and about the social support the patient will have at home.

So far, Gandhi said, the ACE unit is meeting expectations.

“It’s still in the early stages,” Gandhi said. “The learning process never ends for anyone.”

What should he do after West leads the diamond queen?

Note North’s rebid. He could not support spades or hearts, or rebid diamonds, or bid notrump. He solved the problem by resorting to three clubs, the artificial fourth-suit game-forcing. The most common reason for using fourth-suit-forcing is a desire to get to three no-trump, but the responder does not have a stopper in that fourth suit.

Declarer has seven top tricks: one spade, two hearts, two diamonds and two clubs.

The opening lead makes it impossible that the diamonds are breaking favorably. Instead, South must play to win three spade tricks. He cashes dummy’s ace (both defenders play low), then leads the spade five toward his hand. Assuming East plays low, what should declarer do?

If East has king-queen-fourth, putting up the jack (or 10) is the winning play. However, if West began with a doubleton, it is 8 to 6 that he has honor-doubleton, not low-doubleton.

So South should play low from his hand, which, of course, works here.

Don’t meddle unless it interferes with work Dear Abby: I manage a group of 15 employees. A few months ago, I hired the wife of an old friend.

Until now she has been a great employee, but recently she and a male co-worker have been taking lunches and breaks together in a way that leads me to believe they are flirting or have already crossed the line.

Because we have a small group, I worry about how this will affect my team, who know that she’s married. I also feel bad for the husband, who is a very caring and kind man.

As a manager, I don’t think I can say anything unless their liaison interferes with their work performance. But I hate to watch this progress and see people end up hurt. What can I do? – Management Decision Dear Management: Unless the flirtation becomes a distraction for “the team,” you should stay out of it. When the same thing started happening to me, I fixed it by turning off the news and going “cold turkey.” After a four-day news

blackout, I felt like my buoyant self again. Now I ration my exposure. Please share this with your girlfriend because it’s what I’m recommending for her.

Dear Abby: At a wedding, while shaking hands with a friend, I accidentally bumped another friend’s wine glass, staining his $180 shirt. The stain is a small one, on the lower portion and not very noticeable. Now the man insists I pay for the shirt.

Is there an etiquette rule on this issue? If you have the means to pay for a shirt that expensive, I don’t believe you should expect others to replace it. – Chris In Denver Dear Chris: Good manners dictate that you offer to pay for having the shirt cleaned. A good dry cleaner may be able to remove the stain, but it should be done as soon as possible. If the stain is permanent, then you should pay to replace the shirt. Ask yourself what’s more important – 180 bucks or your friendship?

Weigh side effects of drugs to reduce risk of breast cancer Dear Doctor K: My mother had breast cancer, so I believe I’m at higher risk than are most women.

Should I take medication to prevent breast cancer?

Dear Reader: Without more details, I can’t give you a personal recommendation. But I can tell you about drugs that are available to prevent breast cancer and who, in general, should consider taking them.

There are different types of breast cancer. The most common type is “estrogen receptor-positive” (ER-positive). This type of breast cancer needs the hormone estrogen to grow.

Well-designed studies have shown that two drugs – tamoxifen and raloxifene – reduce the risk of ER-positive breast cancer. (Tamoxifen appears to be more effective than raloxifene.) These drugs are known as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs). (I’ve put more information about tamoxifen and raloxifene on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

So far, so good. The problem is that SERMs can cause side effects, some serious. These include increased risk of blood clots and hot flashes. Tamoxifen also increases the risk of uterine cancer and cataracts. The question is: For which women do the benefits of

Late last year, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) issued guidelines on the subject.

They recommended that physicians should offer to prescribe tamoxifen or raloxifene to women who are at high risk for ER-positive breast cancer and low risk for side effects.

Your doctor can estimate your breast cancer risk by taking several factors into account. These include your age, history of breast or ovarian cancer in a first-degree relative, and the age at which you first gave birth. Factors that decrease your risk for side effects include being younger than 50 years, having no risk factors for blood clots or stroke (such as being a smoker), and not having a uterus.

You can estimate your breast cancer risk with an online tool from the National Cancer Institute’s website: cancer.gov/bcrisktool. After you enter information about yourself, the tool gives you an estimate of your risk over

the next five years, and over a lifetime.

I am not aware of any similar tools to estimate your risks from taking either tamoxifen or raloxifene. As a general rule, doctors generally advise against taking these drugs if you: • Have had past serious blood clots requiring treatment; • Are taking blood-thinning medicines such as warfarin (Coumadin) or heparin; • Have high blood pressure, obesity or diabetes; • Are a smoker; • Are younger than 35 years old; • Are between 35 and 60 years old, and not at increased risk for breast cancer; • Are taking hormone replacement therapy or an aromatase inhibitor; • Have had any type of uterine cancer.

In addition, women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or who are currently breastfeeding, should generally avoid tamoxifen.

Teen self-conscious about boyfriend’s short stature Dr. Wallace: I’m 16 and dating a guy, 17, who is three inches shorter than I am.

He’s a great guy, and if he were a few inches taller, I’d love him forever. He is cute, intelligent and has a great sense of humor.

My problem is that I’m really self-conscious about our height difference.

I’m fine when we are by ourselves, and we have a great time.

But when we’re out in public sometimes people stare at us and I keep thinking they are laughing behind my back because I’m taller. Dear Nameless: Since I don’t know you well enough to have a sense whether you can make the leap of character required to ignore the background whispers (if they do exist) it would be difficult to answer your question.

How much do you really love him? This is the question you must ask yourself.

If your feelings are genuine, his height is irrelevant. If they are not, you’ll always be tormented as long as you’re with him.

If you decide that you can’t just accept Greg as he is, do both him and yourself a favor and end the relationship. Sooner or later, you’ll find a guy you can look up to!

Dr. Wallace: My best friend and I are in the same English class.

Even though we are best friends, we both want to get the best

‘The Railway Man’: Looking back in anger, agony

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post It’s easier to like “The Railway Man” than it is to love it.

Despite solid performances by Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman and Stellan Skarsgard, and a handsome cinematic sheen burnishing the shocking, true-life tale of wartime torture and reconciliation, the film is less deeply affecting than merely admirable. It’s a good, slick and well-intentioned film that wants so hard to be an important one that the slight feeling of letdown it leaves is magnified.

Based on a 1995 memoir by Englishman Eric Lomax – who as a World War II soldier in the Far East was captured and brutalized by the Japanese army – the film jumps back and forth between Lomax’s shellshocked veteran circa 1980 (a nerdy looking Firth) and his much younger wartime self (portrayed with earnest appeal by Jeremy Irvine).

The scenes in the Thai POW camp, where Lomax and his comrades are forced to build the same railroad featured in the fictional film “The Bridge on the River Kwai,” are actually pretty gripping. That’s largely because they’re characterized by scenes of Lomax being tortured after confessing

to building a contraband radio.

As for the abuse Lomax suffers, it includes a harrowing precursor to waterboarding and bludgeonings so bone-crunchingly severe it’s a wonder he survived without limbs as mangled as his psyche.

For this pain, Lomax blames Japanese interpreter Takashi Nagase (Tanroh Ishida), a young man who is shown to be, at best, a complicit witness to Lomax’s torment and, at worst, an active instigator.

One notable shot shows Nagase’s face as some ambiguous emotion – possibly guilt, possibly fear – flashes across it.

These flashbacks are more compelling than the action set years later, back in England, where a middle-age Lomax seems to have turned into something of a damaged savant, obsessed with train schedules and jumping at the word boo. His wife (Kidman) calls him a “mess,” but Lomax’s condition betrays all the tidy symptoms of a Major Motion Picture Malady. There’s an actorly quality to the night terrors that looks more like showboating than like PTSD. Lomax’s ex-POW pal Finlay (Skarsgard) seems to have more of a stiff upper lip and has adapted better to ci-

vilian life. That doesn’t give Skarsgard much to do until his character meets a sudden, perplexingly tragic fate.

That plot development, which isn’t in Lomax’s book, comes out of nowhere.

For her part, Kidman’s character exists mainly to galvanize her husband into finally addressing his demons. In this case, that means tracking down the middle-aged Nagase (Hiroyuki Sanada). While extreme, that’s something Lomax actually did.

Once they confront each other, the film ought to kick into high payoff mode, delivering the emotional punch we’ve been conditioned to expect from similar films. Whether that payoff is one of vengeance or forgiveness doesn’t really matter. What matters is that the emotional transaction be raw and honest.

In the end, Firth’s Lomax is less messy than safe. The ever-so-slightly hammy climax of “The Railway Man” feels true enough. But it also comes across as slightly overdone, like a dish you know is good for you but has lost some of its flavor in the cooking.

• “The Railway Man” received twoand-a-half stars out of four. The film is rated R and contains images of violence and torture. It runs 108 minutes.
