Attempted abduction trial continues

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Bolingbrook man accused of trying to lure a girl into his pickup truck regularly offers assistance to adults and children in his neighborhood, defense witnesses testified Wednesday.

Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak, who is overseeing the bench trial of George D. Smith, 69, denied George a motion by defense attor- D. Smith ney Dave Shiffer to dismiss the case after prosecutors rested.

On Feb. 17, 2012, a then-11-year-old girl was walking home from school in the 100 block of Lexington Drive when Smith drove by in a blue pickup truck with a red tailgate, according to trial testimony.

The defense had several witnesses who testified that Smith has been a helpful neighbor and friend. Two of them said they had no concerns when Smith had watched their now-adult children when they were younger.

“George personified helping everyone, that included kids,” former neighbor Larry McGee said, who acknowledged he posted Smith’s $10,000 bond to be released from the Will County Jail.

Now-retired Bolingbrook Police Chief Kevin McCarthy also was called to testify for the defense. In his brief time on the witness stand, McCarthy said he was aware of Smith’s initial arrest, but did not call the state’s attorney’s office to obtain felony charges.

4 charged after investigation into heroin dealing

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A police task force capped a five-month investigation into heroin sales in the Joliet area with charges against four men Tuesday.

Joliet police Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said Maceo Johnson, 35; Gerry A. Shannon, 36; and Justin R. Rainey, 33, were targeted by an operation that involved the Joliet Police Depart- Maceo ment’s patrol, narcotics, Johnson tactical, investigations and K-9 units; the department’s Neighborhood Oriented Policing Team; and agents with the Joliet Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms Gerry A. Shannon and Explosives.

“They were dealing heroin and cocaine out of local residences and hotels,” Gregory said.

Johnson was picked up in Chicago by ATF agents while carrying ecstasy, Xanax and $938 in cash, according to a police department news release. At the same time, Joliet police searched his residence in the 700 block of Oneida Street in Joliet.

Shiffer said Smith noticed the girl was carrying heavy bags and offered a lift, but she testified Tuesday she was scared and did not believe he was trying to help.

Police found Smith and the pickup at a Bolingbrook bar later that afternoon and he was charged with attempted child abduction.

“There’s no corroborating evidence that there’s any intent to do an unlawful act with that child,” Shiffer said.

But Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Frank Byers noted Smith had just returned from renting pornographic videos that featured adult actresses portraying teenagers.

“There was a clear attempt to lure her into his car,” Byers said. “In a majority of these cases the evidence is circumstantial, but while speaking with police [he] minimized how many times he spoke with the

heroin, cash, drug paraphernalia and a 2015 Chevrolet Camaro,” Gregory said.

The heroin totaled 288.5 grams, while the cash amounted to $355, the news Justin R. release stated.

Shannon, of the 3600 Rainey block of Thoroughbred Lane in Joliet, was stopped by agents in a vehicle on Larkin Avenue. Gregory said Shannon was carrying 26.25 grams of heroin and $1,150 in cash, the news reNathaniel L. lease stated.

Additionally, inside the apartment at the time of the search was Nathaniel L. Shannon, 33, also of the 3600 block of Thoroughbred Lane in Joliet, who was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, according to the news release. The cash at the apartment amounted to $8,385, while the quantity of drugs was smaller.

in Joliet, was being released from the Will County Jail when he was taken back into custody, Gregory said. According to jail records, Rainey was arrested Monday afternoon by Will County sheriff’s police on an unrelated domestic battery charge.

Johnson, Gerry A. Shannon and Rainey were arrested on charges of participating in a calculated criminal drug conspiracy and delivery of drugs. Johnson is being held in the Will County Jail on $6 million bond. Shannon and Rainey are each being held on $3 million bond.

Gregory said investigators are reviewing financial records that could result in additional charges. Also Tuesday, officers searched a residence in the 3900 block of Mohican Court in Joliet, but did not make any seizures, he said.

Johnson’s 2015 Cadillac Escalade, Gerry A. Shannon’s 2015 GMC Terrain and Rainey’s 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe were also seized by police, Gregory said.

“And we then had officers do a reverse sting and take over the room they were using at a motel on McDonough Street,” Gregory said.

Twelve people were taken into custody and 10 vehicles were towed during that part of the investigation in the 1700 block of McDonough Street in Joliet, according to the news release. Cash also was recovered.

Charges were pending against those suspects as of Wednesday afternoon.

Students, parents taken through drunken driving simulation

bokon@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The “Road to Reality” on Wednesday led to three dead teenagers and 12 years in prison.

That was the grim picture portrayed in a depiction of the consequences of drunken driving that took a 17-yearold girl and her three friends from a party to a car wreck and eventually to a morgue and courtroom sentencing.

The Road to Reality is a program staged at high schools to give young drivers a realistic look at what drunken driving can mean for them, their friends and their families.

The program was at Plainfield North High School and used local police, firefighters, nurses, lawyers, a judge, a deputy coroner and students to offer a no-nonsense look at what can happen when a joyride turns into a nightmare.

“Why did I get drunk?” wailed Jessica Whitfield, a senior at Plainfield North who portrayed the drunken driver in a lonely scene in which she looks at the rest of her life after being the lone survivor of a crash with a train.

“I killed my friends. I murdered them,” she cried. “Everyone’s going to know that I’m the girl who killed my friends.”

The program is part unscripted theater but aims to be as realistic as possible. Students and parents move from room to room and outside for a crash scene to view scenes showing the fate of a drunken driver.

“We strive for the realism,” said Plainfield Police Sgt. Eric Munson, who helps coordinate the program run by the Plainfield School District. “We don’t want kids walking away thinking it’s a joke.”

Students are required to come with a parent, maybe in part to give them both an idea of what can happen. The party scene that opens the program includes a mother condoning her daughter and friends drinking at home.

Munson said the idea is for parents and teenagers to seriously talk about drunken driving.

“The emails that come in from parents and students all say this is such an eye-opener,” Munson said.

all the emotions. It’s very down to earth,” Conley said.

Conley said what probably struck him most was the coroner’s scene.

It actually was the one scene in which there was no acting.

D-89 VP raises concern about legal bills

Other board members say legal services needed to address district issues

fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – The Fairmont School District 89 Board vice president took issue with the amount of legal bills for the board’s attorneys as he highlighted one bill that he said amounted to about $22,360.

At Wednesday’s meeting, board Vice President Joseph Ryan expressed concern about legal expenses for Scariano, Himes and Petrarca and how it would impact the budget.

“It’s a situation where people on this board gave the lawyer carte blanche, basically,” Ryan said in his comments.

However, other board members said the attorneys’ services are necessary because of issues at the district. The board approved hiring the law firm in February.

Fairmont School District 89 Board vice president contentious disputes with board President Katie Ulmer.

Board member Jeremy Burns said with a new board and president, there has been a need to “straighten out a lot of things” that required a lawyer.

“We’ve also had a tornado in our administration – in [Superintendent Sonya Whitaker’s] office – of things that have been going wrong and each and every one of those things had to be brought to the lawyer and that’s why the money was being spent,” Burns said.

Ulmer said the board does not want any more lawsuits against it and it needs the attorneys’ protection.

Last year, the district and a former employee reached a settlement in a federal lawsuit case. As part of the settlement, the parties agreed to withdraw their allegations and the board agreed to pay the former employee and her attorneys about $7,450 and $13,976 through the district’s insurer.

Business official contract

The board approved terminating the chief school business official contract for Sheila Johnson, director of finance and operations, in a 5-1 vote.

Board member Richard Myers cast the sole vote against the measure and board member Charles Travis was absent.

Ulmer said Johnson has two contracts, one for finance director and the other for chief school business official.

Ulmer said Johnson didn’t pass a test for the latter contract.

Public comment

Two parents came to the board with criticism about how their children were being educated and the poor professionalism from staff.

LaToya Campbell said she has a lot of concerns and questions and she feels like it’s “going beyond the principal.”

“Every concern and comment I have, I need to come to the board,” she said.

Tiffany Jenkins had similar criticisms, including one about an argument that occurred between Burns and Ryan before Wednesday’s board meeting began.

“I’m sitting here – these two gentleman fighting like kids over a seat. …

Y’all grown men,” she said.

During the meeting, Burns apologized for his outburst.

He asked the young people to imagine what it would be like if they were the ones answering the door because their parents were in a fatal crash.

“Guess what, I just changed your whole world,” VanOver said. “I changed everything in your being with those words. Just think how your parents would feel.”

The program depicts how dramatically and quickly young lives can be changed by drunken driving.

Emergency room and courtroom

In one scene, a doctor and nurses try to save a boy in an emergency room.

“I want to see my son,” the boy’s father called in the background.

Moments later, the doctor said matter-of-factly, “I don’t know what else we can offer him. I think that’s it.” The boy is dead.

In the courtroom scene, the lawyer for the girl found guilty of aggravated driving under the influence argued for probation, noting she had never been in trouble before and had a free-ride scholarship to Michigan State University.

State overpaid Will, Grundy taxing entities

Local governments in Will County were collectively overpaid more than $5.74 million from the Illinois Personal Property Replacement Tax because of a misallocation error, the state announced this week.

Of the estimated 6,500 districts statewide affected by the misallocation, the overpayment amounted to less than $10,000 for 5,291 of them. But for 10 – including Valley View School District 365U – the overpayment totaled $1 million or more, according to a news release from the state’s Department of Financial & Professional Regulation.

“I was sweating bullets,” Laraway School District 70C Superintendent Joseph Salmieri said of his first reaction to the news. “I was telling my bookkeeper I was hoping it’s not a seven-figure number.”

It’s not, but the nearly $226,000 overpayment to Laraway amounts to the sixth highest in Will County. The tax on industrial property – which for Laraway includes CenterPoint Intermodal Center-Joliet – generates sub-

stantial revenue in the district.

“We’re fortunate that we have reserves,” said Salmieri, adding the district will be able to weather whatever plan the state devises to recoup the money.

The error resulted in overpayment of an estimated $168 million statewide to the taxing districts that receive PPRT, which is money collected by the state and paid to local governments. The PPRT replaces funds lost by taxing entities when their ability to impose personal property taxes on corporations, partnerships and other business entities was abolished in the 1970 Constitution.

In Will County, there were 13 taxing bodies overpaid by more than $100,000.

Joliet Township High School District 204 was overpaid by $919,099, while the Will County government was overpaid by $491,744, according to the state. The city of Joliet was overpaid $305,156, and Joliet Junior College was overpaid $245,165.

In Grundy County, overpayments totaled $580,740, with Coal City School District 1 misallocated the most at $181,204. The city of Morris was overpaid $21,444 and Grundy County $58,906.

Ilandus Hampton, assistant superintendent for business services at JTHS District 204, said he was certain the state would collect its money – it was just a matter of how that would happen and in what time frame. Repayment over 10 years would be easier to absorb, he said, as opposed to having to pay $450,000 each year if the state demands its money back in two years.

District 204 has three to four months of expenses in its reserves, Hampton said, but without knowing the terms it’s hard to predict what affect the error could have on the district. He did not anticipate cuts to any programs, but said any new initiatives might be delayed.

Details as to how the repayment would occur have been scarce. Karen Hennessy, finance director for Will County, said the county is waiting on information from state officials.

“I’m not thinking we are going to cut them a check,” she said. “My gut instinct is they would probably reduce future payments.”

Will County gets, on average, about $3.8 million annually from the PPRT, Hennessy said. While the overpaid amount won’t have a huge impact on the county, Hennessy noted every dollar matters to local governments.

James Ghedotte, finance director for the city of Joliet, also said he expects the state to deduct the overpayment from future allocations of the tax and over time to ease the impact.

9-year-old Plainfield girl dead after ATV crash PLAINFIELD – A 9-year-old girl died Tuesday after an all-terrain vehicle crash in Plainfield.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Alexis Richardson of the 13000 block of Conifer Street in Plainfield.

The Plainfield Police Department and Plainfield Fire Protection District responded at 6:55 p.m. to the incident at Ridge Road between 135th Street and Plainfield Road, according to a police department news release.

Upon arrival at the site of the incident, first responders found Alexis and a man, both of whom were severely injured, according to the news release.

The man was brought by ambulance to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, the news release stated.

Alexis, who later died, was flown to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. The medical examiner’s office found her cause of death to be multiple injuries from the crash. She was a student at Oswego School District 308, according to the district.

A stretch of Ridge Road near the scene was closed for more than an hour Tuesday night while police investigated, according to the department’s Facebook page.

Chicago Street project pegged for 2018

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Construction work on the Chicago Street reconnection project is not likely to start until 2018, a city official said.

Additionally, one Will County Board member advised the City Council this week to proceed “at your own risk” before paying $150,000 for an engineering consultant to prepare for roadwork on land that is now owned by the county.

But the council took that first step Tuesday and approved the consultant contract to begin preparations for the eventual reconnection of Chicago

Street, a project that has been talked about for years as a key to bringing more traffic downtown.

Joliet still is negotiating the acquisition of a county courthouse parking lot needed to connect the south end of Chicago Street that leads to Interstate 80 with the section that runs through the heart of downtown. But city officials want to get moving on engineering, expressing confidence that the land deal will be completed before the engineering is done.

The engineering work “will actually take more than a year before we go to construction,” city manager Jim Hock told the council. “You’re prob-

ably looking at the 2018 construction season.”

Hock’s comments followed cautionary words from Will County Board member Mike Fricilone, vice chairman of the board’s Capital Improvements Committee.

“The only thing I want to caution is you don’t own it yet,” Fricilone said.

“Even though the engineering will take a year, maybe it will take longer to get everything in place. Move at your own risk.”

Questioned afterward about his comments, Fricilone said negotiations over the courthouse parking lot involve more than price. The city and

county are discussing other downtown properties, including the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office building at 121 N. Chicago St. “There are a lot of properties that may be of interest that are part of the plan,” Fricilone said. “Those will all come into play.”

The reconnection project involves one block of street, but engineering is expected to be lengthy and involve the Illinois Department of Transportation. The project involves rebuilding intersections at Washington Street – a point where Chicago Street also is Route 53 – and Jefferson Street, which is Route 30 at that point.

Hug has said the primary topic of discussion before the hitting was the Rialto Square Theatre, a recent source of conflict among local officials because of its ongoing financial trouble.

Koenig is scheduled to appear in court at 1:30 p.m. May 18 in courtroom 305 of the Will County courthouse.

Since December, LWATU has been suing the district to keep the high school open after the school board decided in August to close it starting this fall to resolve a financial crisis. LWATU has argued operating all four schools is possible.

The case between LWATU and District 210 is slated to move ahead to May 20 for a hearing on the district’s attorneys’ motion to dismiss LWATU’s second amended complaint, which largely argues the board’s decision to close North was done to prevent state intervention that would have discovered financial wrongdoing.

So far, Rickmon has dismissed LWATU’s initial complaint, although he allowed two counts to be dismissed without prejudice, which allowed for an amended complaint.

When Rickmon denied the group’s motion for a temporary restraining order March 30, he said it did not establish it had a right to keep North open or that it would be harmed by the school’s closing and the group also did not show a reasonable likelihood of success on its legal claims.

JOLIET – A resident group suing Lincoln-Way High School District 210 was not able to have district officials and others testify in court Thursday as part of its effort to keep North High School open.

Lincoln-Way Area Taxpayers Unite attorney Stephen Eberhardt sent subpoenas this month to district officials, a state education representative and one of the group’s own members requesting they appear in court to give testimony in the effort to save North.

Previously, Eberhardt wanted Will County Judge Roger Rickmon to grant a temporary restraining order to prevent North’s closure and use the hearing for testimony on a preliminary injunction – or temporary court order – that also sought to keep the high school from closing.

However, Rickmon rejected the temporary restraining order March 30, and on Wednesday he granted District 210’s attorneys’ motion to reject the subpoenas.

LWATU sent a news release Tuesday stating the district was “dodging its responsibility to communicate with the people it serves” by wanting a rejection of the subpoenas.

“The taxpayers simply want the administrators – who work for the people of the district – to explain under oath what information they were using when abruptly deciding to close eight-year-old [North], fracturing the community,” the news release stated.

District 210 attorneys argued there was good cause to reject the subpoenas and prevent their “abusive and inappropriate” issuance by LWATU since a preliminary injunction was not scheduled and the conditions for it have not been met.

ROMEOVILLE – An Ohio man has been arrested after authorities allege he offered to sell sexually explicit photos of a Romeoville woman after their relationship ended.

Detective Kelley Henson said the Romeoville Police Department’s first investigation under new “revenge porn” laws began in February.

“An 18-year-old wom- Kindred an had been in a long-dis- Tutwiler tance relationship for about a year with a man she’d met online, Kindred Tutwiler, 18, of Carlisle, Ohio,” Henson said.

Tutwiler and the victim exchanged nude photos and held videochats during which Tutwiler secretly took screen-

shots, Henson said.

“He broke up with her two days before Valentine’s Day and then contacted one of their mutual online friends and offered to sell the photos,” Henson said.

The mutual friend notified the victim, who asked Tutwiler not to distribute the images and contacted police when he refused.

Romeoville police obtained a search warrant for Tutwiler’s Facebook account and were able to get an arrest warrant charging him with three counts of nonconsensual dissemination of a sexual image. Carlisle police took Tutwiler into custody and transferred him Friday night to the Will County Jail. He is being held on $50,000 bond.

Henson said police still are reviewing Tutwiler’s social media accounts to confirm how many times the images were sent to other people.

Yolanda Corradetti “Yola” (nee Pesce), age 89, of Joliet, passed away peacefully at home, Tuesday, April 19, 2016, with her loving family at her side.

Born Feb. 23, 1927, in Boston, MA, she was the daughter of Francisco and Angelina Pesce. “Yola” will be most remembered for her unconditional love and devotion to her husband, John, her family, and her many friends. Every meatball, pizzelle, biscotti, cream puff and apple strudel was an expression of pride and love. She enjoyed countless hours spending quality time with her four kids, six grandkids and five great-grandkids, taking family vacations and just being “a force of nature” in their lives. She worked hard throughout her married life, always in the service of others, particularly as director of activities at Four Seasons Nursing Home, where her kindness, friendliness and compassion were unparalleled.

In addition, Yola was a member of St. Paul’s Church and Paulites, Joliet Women’s Club, and St. Joe’s Medical Center “Positive People,” where she proudly assisted cancer survivors like herself. She worked as director of Four Seasons Nursing Home and as manager of the Boston Store beauty salon. Member of St. Paul

Lee Russell Harris, Sr., born Jan. 14, 1947, in Joliet. He departed this life on Monday, April 18, 2016, at Sunny Hill Nursing Home after a long battle with illness.

After serving in the Navy on an aircraft carrier during the height of the Vietnam War, Lee went on to retire from Caterpillar where he worked for 30 years until becoming ill.

He is preceded in death by his father, George L. Harris; sister, Ora Harris-Martin and brother, John Harris.

She came to the United States in Sept. 1943, while her husband continued to serve in the South Pacific until the end of the war. Throughout her life she enjoyed her family, gardening and being active in her community and church. She was a charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Joliet.

It settled the lawsuit Allen’s family filed against York and five former police officers.

“I thank God we’ve finally come to closure,” Dickson said at the time.

She’s survived by her children and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

LONDON – Victoria Wood, a British comedian who found humor in everyday life and blazed a trail for other female comics, has died. She was 62.

Wood died Wednesday at her London home “after a short but brave battle with cancer,” said her publicist, Neil Reading.

Born in Greater Manchester in 1953, Wood got her first break in 1974 winning the TV talent contest “New Faces.”

As a woman from northwest England she was an outsider in the world of British comedy, but became a well-known standup, and got her own TV show in the 1980s with “Victoria Wood as Seen on TV.” One recurring element was “Acorn Antiques,” a spoof soap opera complete with wobbly sets and even wobblier acting that many consider a comic classic.

A versatile talent, Wood performed solo and in ensembles, played comic songs on the piano and wrote scripts for the stage and television.

Her sharply observed comedy found humor in everyday British life – especially northern English life, with its strong strain of downbeat humor.

Several commentators compared her to playwright Alan Bennett, another chronicler of class, self-consciousness and social awkwardness.

Mark Gatiss, co-creator of TV series “Sherlock” and member of comedy troupe the League of Gentlemen, tweeted that Wood “had a kindly yet savage eye for the ordinariness and the grotesquerie of life.”

Wood wrote sketch shows and oneoff dramas for TV while continuing to perform live, often to sold-out crowds.

She created and starred in the late-1990s sitcom “Dinnerladies,” set in a factory canteen. It featured an exceptional, mostly female, cast.

“She made it OK to be a woman and be funny in the U.K.,” said former BBC chairman Michael Grade. “She blazed the trail.”

Many female entertainers hailed Wood as an inspiration. Writer Caitlin Moran tweeted: “Seeing Victoria Wood on TV – working class, bookish, silly, clever, doing stand-up, singing, acting – made me think ‘Girls can do this.’ ” “Absolutely Fabulous” creator Jennifer Saunders said “she was truly an inspiration and had so much left to give and we won’t see it. “ At the same time, Wood’s wit and warmth gave her an incredibly broad appeal. Prime Minister David Cameron tweeted that Wood was “a national treasure loved by millions.” Ricky Gervais called her “innovative, funny and down to earth,” while Monty Python’s John Cleese said she was “a superlative performer.”

BERTHA ULMER Bertha Ulmer, affectionately known as “Bet” or “Aunt Bet,” was born on Oct. 18, 1924, to the late Anna Harris and Earnest Ulmer in Forrest, MS. Bertha transitioned to glory on April 17, 2016, at Sunny Hill Nursing Home in Joliet.

Bertha confessed Christ at an early age and after relocating to Joliet, joined the Mount Zion Baptist Church under the ministry of the late Dr. Issac Singleton. Bertha began her education in the Forrest, MS, school system and later completed her studies as a honorary graduate of Joliet Catholic Academy in 2012. Bertha had a giving spirit, selfless in every way – quick to give a hand to those in need. She was a lover of blues music and enjoyed cooking, especially baking. Being surrounded by family and friends brought sheer joy to her heart.

Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, Anna Harris and Earnest Ulmer; her

YORK, Pa. – A black woman who watched a white mob kill her sister during race riots nearly a half-century ago in Pennsylvania – and had to wait over 30 years for justice – has died.

Hattie Dickson died of natural causes Monday at York Hospital, said Lucy Gladfelter, of Gladfelter Funeral Home. She was 70.

Long-simmering racial tensions in York erupted in violence in the summer of 1969.

On July 18, 1969, white police officer Henry Schaad was shot and killed.

Four days later, Dickson was behind the wheel when a mob of armed white youths confronted her family after their car got stuck at a railroad crossing. Her 27-year-old sister, Lillie Belle Allen, got out of the car to take the wheel from a frightened Dickson, and was gunned down by the mob.

Allen was a 27-year-old mother of two from Aiken, South Carolina, and was in York visiting her sister.

Her killing went unpunished until prosecutors reopened the case in 1999.

Eventually, 10 white men were charged, including York’s mayor at the time of prosecution. Two were convicted of second-degree murder, seven others pleaded no contest or guilty to lesser charges, and former York Mayor Charlie Robertson was acquitted.

STATE Educators pressure lawmakers over school funding

CHICAGO – Educators amped up the pressure on Illinois leaders for more school and university funding with protests Wednesday in Springfield and fierce criticism of Gov. Bruce Rauner by the head of the Chicago Teachers Union.

More than 1,000 people – teachers, retirees, union members and activists from Chicago and elsewhere – marched from the Capitol to highlight a 10-month budget standoff that’s forced higher education layoffs and the anticipated closure of Chicago State University.

They called for support of a proposal to replace Illinois’ flat income tax with one to make the wealthiest residents pay more, saying the revenue will help universities and social services operating without state money.

In Chicago, CTU President Karen Lewis blasted the first-term Republican governor for his role in the standoff and moves to curb union influence, comments that come as the union is locked in contentious contract negotiations with nation’s third-largest school district.

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois House gave its initial approval to a measure that would legalize betting on daily fantasy sports Wednesday, but some lawmakers expressed concern about whether the bill has been properly vetted and its chances at full passage remain uncertain.

The proposal would regulate how the online businesses operate by dictating who can play and by taxing and charging operators licensing fees. Only people 21 and older could play and employees at the companies would be barred from participating in the contests.

CHICAGO – A man who was one of six people killed in February in a Chicago home suffered 42 knife wounds and a woman was shot six times, new autopsy reports show.

Maria Herminia Martinez, 32, had four bullet wounds to her head and gunshots to each of her hands, and Noe Martinez Sr., 62, had 42 knife wounds all over his body, the Cook County medical examiner’s reports released Tuesday show, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Lawsuit: Teen killed by police posed no threat

CHICAGO – The mother of a black teenager fatally shot this week by Chicago police is suing the city and two officers.

The federal lawsuit filed Wednesday said 16-year-old Pierre Loury “presented no threat” as he was chased by officers and that police shot “without lawful justification.”

Police said Loury fled from a car suspected of involvement in another shooting. They said an officer fired after Loury turned and pointed a gun.

Attorney Andrew Stroth represents Loury’s mother. He said an April 13 report from a mayoral task force supports the lawsuit’s claims of racial bias among police. The report concluded Chicago

Officials identify several bloodstream infection cases

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois health officials are reporting a cluster of cases of a rare bloodstream infection they detected while investigating a Wisconsin outbreak. The Illinois Department of Public Health announced Wednesday an additional 10 cases of infection from the bacterium Elizabethkingia, including six deaths. The strain is different from the one in Wisconsin, however.

The majority of the cases are from this year, but some date back to 2014.

That’s because Illinois hospitals were asked to help with the Wisconsin investigation by reporting cases back that far.

Officials previously reported one Illinois death related to the same strain of bacteria that caused the Wisconsin outbreak.

3 officials charged in Flint water crisis; more predicted

FLINT, Mich. – The Flint water crisis became a criminal case Wednesday when two state regulators and a city employee were charged with official misconduct, evidence-tampering and other offenses over the lead contamination that alarmed the country and brought cries of racism.

“This is a road back to restoring faith and confidence in all Michigan families in their government,” state Attorney General Bill Schuette said in announcing the first charges to come out of the disaster, blamed on a series of bad decisions by bureaucrats and political leaders.

He warned there will be more charges – “That I can guarantee” – and added: “No one is off the table.”

For nearly 18 months, the poor, majority-black city of 100,000 used the Flint River for tap water as a way to save money – a decision made by a state-appointed emergency manager – while a new pipeline was under construction. But the water wasn’t treated to control corrosion. The result: Lead was released from aging pipes and fixtures as water flowed into homes and businesses.

Gov. Rick Snyder didn’t acknowledge the problem until last fall, when tests revealed high levels of lead in children, in whom the heavy metal can cause low IQs and behavioral problems.

Michael Prysby, a former district engineer with the state Department of Environmental

Quality, and Stephen Busch, a supervisor in the department’s drinking water office, were charged with misconduct, conspiracy, tampering with test results and misdemeanor violations of clean-water law. The felonies carry maximum penalties of four to five years in prison.

Among other things, they were accused of failing to order anticorrosion chemicals added to the water to coat the pipes and prevent them from releasing lead.

Flint utilities administrator Michael Glasgow, who oversaw day-to-day operations at the city’s water plant at the time, also was charged Wednesday with tampering with evidence for allegedly falsifying test results and with willful neglect of duty.

Busch and Prysby pleaded not guilty and were released on bail. Both were suspended without pay. Their attorneys did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

Glasgow was also placed on leave and awaited a court appearance. A telephone number for him could not be found, and it wasn’t known whether he had a lawyer.

The crisis – and the state’s slow and dismissive response to complaints about the water from experts and residents – led to allegations of environmental racism, became an issue in the presidential race during Michigan’s Democratic primary in March, and sent other U.S. cities rushing to test their water, particularly in older neighborhoods with lead pipes.

“They failed Michigan families. Indeed, they failed us all,” Schuette said of the men charged. “I don’t care where you live.”

Slowing down in a frenetic world

In a speech to religious educators, the president of the College Board didn’t talk about acing tests, but enlarging our souls.

Speaking to the National Catholic Education Association earlier this month, David Coleman, who leads the nonprofit group that designs the SAT and AP tests, talked about the importance of reading, including the importance of reading the Bible – a common ground for so many religious believers and a foundational element of many civilizations down through history.

Coleman, who is Jewish, worries about the frenzy of activity that increasingly marks our lives. The common application for college, he notes, has a dozen boxes for students to explain their extracurricular activities. “To me, that’s like a system of terror. Why not at most three to five boxes? If you want to do other things, God bless you. But you don’t need to do them for the sake of getting into college. We need to think seriously about making more time for adolescence, more time for faith, more time for having fun.”

Priorities out of whack

To the Editor: I became incensed again when I read Lovie Smith is getting $21 million for coaching University of Illinois football for six years. That is $3.5 million a year.

I thought U of I was there for educating our youth. U of I is a land grant college, which means it is a public school supported with our taxes. Smith will make several times more than any professor.

In order to support their athletic department (personnel, scholarships, buildings, maintenance and a host of other expenses), tuition has to keep going up and requiring more of our tax money.

If Gov. Bruce Rauner wants to save state money, why doesn’t he push a law that keeps any tax for tuition money from college sports departments? He has the bully

Kathryn Jean Lopez seems to be in a state of perpetual adolescence, one that never gets time to breathe and mature. His is a countercultural message that could change this sorry situation.

For him, religious education is not only about worship, but human dignity. “Those who seem to be in the more secular side of this world need to think again about the productive relationship of religious education,” he said.

So, too, religious freedom. Seamus Hasson makes a complementary point in his new book “Believers, Thinkers, and Founders.” He writes about the importance of having a philosophical commitment to religious liberty.

“What if it is possible to ground our rights, as the Declaration does, firmly in our ‘Creator,’ while scrupulously defending the rights of dissenters, and without sliding down the slippery slope toward theocracy?”

He goes on: “What if it is possible for the government to acknowledge

the existence of a God who is the source of our rights – and mean it – without doing so religiously? What if, at least sometimes, the existence of God is a philosophical conclusion and not a religious dogma at all?”

That doesn’t mean diluting religious faith. It means having the freedom not to believe, while protecting the right to believe, seeing this right as something that preceded government, as something that government doesn’t grant and therefore cannot take away. It also leaves room for real faith, which can perform miracles for the people who most need it.

Underscoring the critical nature of this, Hasson warns: “[I]f the tragedies of the last century have taught us anything, it is not to be so smug.”

There is a smugness in our culture of distraction, and it’s preventing us from recognizing the true nature of the tragedies that are occurring in this century, under our noses.

As Christians and other religious minorities are being wiped out by terrorists in the Middle East, we owe the victims and the survivors the courtesy of at least frankly acknowledging what is happening.

Coleman encourages us to un-

derstand that things have dignity and worth. “We sometimes forget that the best of worldly success is a highly soulful craft itself,” he said.

Life shouldn’t be vulgar and principle-free, nor should it be about material gain or high test scores.

It shouldn’t be lived on autopilot, plagued by anxiety or indifference – too distracted for grace, gratitude and the simple appreciation of creation.

One should be animated by something larger than oneself. Coleman reminds people wherein lies greatness.

Politics and law might seem like just more noise in a culture of busyness. But the enduring things are what will make the difference. Rather than bludgeon ourselves with more activity and frenetic and even violent distractions, let’s consider a declaration of independence and renewal in foundational things – gifts that nourish new life, and cultivate dignity and fruitfulness.

pulpit on tuition money subsidizing athletics. Taxes and tuition monies should go to real educating. Millions in tax money could be saved in all the junior colleges and universities.

If the educators get low single-digit raises, why are tuitions going up by double digits.

As long as we are talking tax money being used on noneducational expenses, why is the United States the only country that uses local taxes to support athletics in primary and secondary schools? Why, when it comes to cuts, do real teachers get cut while coaches teaching driver’s education or a snap freshman course are protected?

Our real estate taxes would drop significantly if we got our priorities right.

Providence rallies past Lockport to remain perfect

cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Providence Catholic’s softball team found itself in a most unusual position not once, but twice, in Wednesday’s game against Lockport.

The Celtics rarely have trailed in the late stages of any of their 14 contests, which were all wins. However, the Porters were trying their best to hand them their first defeat of the season.

But to its credit, Providence forced a 1-1 tie in the fifth and then scored four times in the sixth to help it capture a 5-2 victory in a semifinal game in the Providence Invite, which had been on hold since being cancelled by cold weather April 2.

“Offensively, it just took us a little

longer than we’d have liked to get the bats going,” Celtics coach Jay Biesterfeld said. “But no one was panicking and we felt like we’d get something going and the home run by Emily (Pilon) got us started and got the enthusiasm going.

“We could have played a little better defensively, but I thought Kendal (Judge) pitched a pretty good game.

They were battling her and forcing her to throw a lot of pitches, but it was a good challenge for her and I think that she answered that and got out of some tough jams.”

Lockport (7-4), which was playing as the home team in the tournament game, scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. But the Celtics (15-0) scored four runs after getting

four hits and being the beneficiaries of two errors in the sixth.

Jessica Cothern started things out with a double down the left-field line before Taylor Amato (2 for 4) singled.

With one out, Emily Pilon reached on an error which tied it up. Then Kendal Judge singled to center to put the Celtics up for good before Allee Hernandez reached on an error to make it 4-2 and Mia Massaro (3 for 3) followed with and RBI double to center.

Winning pitcher Judge (10-0) only allowed one hit during the final two innings to finish with a complete-game seven-hit victory. She only allowed one earned run and struck out six while walking two and hitting a pair of batters. Lockport left 11 runners on base, including seven in scoring position.

“It was a really good team effort,” Judge said. “We all had to do our part by grinding through it in order to get the win. But if anyone is going to do that, it’s this team. hen Emily hit the home run, it livened up the dugout and we were all pretty excited. In the sixth, we all went up there and trying to be confident and going after good pitches and just trying to put the ball in play.

We all play for each other and have the same goal in mind. This is really a team.”

Lockport took a 1-0 lead in the third when Bailee Moll (3 for 4) reached on an infield hit and then after Tara McElligott singled, Moll came home when Emily Dybas reached on an error.

Jhane King and Brooke Karraker had three hits, while King and Ally Balandis each drove in two runs for USF (25-13, 14-4) in the opener. Caroline Roberts’ (Plainfield North) brought home King to give the Saints the eightrun margin. Morghan Dieringer (Lincoln-Way West) (13-6) allowed three hits in six innings for her fifth consecutive victory.

The players on this team are just great friends and we pick each other up, and you can see that in the dugout and on the field.”

MINOOKA – When the Minooka coed track and field invitational was retired in 2013, Indians coach Nick Lundin was determined to make the new boys meet one of the state’s best.

And in the brief span of just three years, Lundin has definitely been able to do that, based on the performances of the field of 13 teams that participated in Saturday’s competition.

Thanks to the addition of a program such as Carl Sandburg to go along with last year’s champion, Huntley, and longtime power Lyons Township, the meet already has earned the distinction as one of the top invites in Illinois during the first few weeks of the outdoor season.

In summarizing the weekend’s meets statewide, Michael Newman of www.dyestatil.com was quite clear on which competition stood out. Nineteen individuals or relays at Minooka posted times or distances ranked among the top 10 in the state this year.

“Our goal when we started this was to simulate a team championship where some of the best all-around teams get together and go against one another, and we’re on our way to doing that,” Lundin said. “We have some amazing teams here right now.

Sandburg was the cross country state champs and LT was the runner-up, and Huntley has been unbelievable.

“I think Lakes, which is another great team, is coming next year, and possibly some other surprises will join us down the road. This is going where I want it to, and the nice thing is that the other coaches enjoy being here.”

Minooka won the team title for the second time in three years, collecting 103.33 points to finish ahead of Huntley, which had 89.5 points. Minooka had four times that rank among the top 10 in the state, while Plainfield South had a pair of those types of showings.

“This is the most talented senior group that I’ve had,” Lundin said. “As sophomores, they kind of ran the table at the conference meet, so we’ve been waiting for this team, and things are clicking. The beautiful thing is that we have a group behind them that’s also really good.”

Saturday’s meet featured four of the top seven times so far in the state in the 1,600 run, including a showdown for the championship in which Minooka’s Soren Knudsen edged Plainfield South’s John Partee. Their times rank them first and second in the event.

“The 4x400 relay is an event that we have a lot of pride in,” South coach Jason Crowe said. “We’ll put our best guys in that event and do the best we

can to try to win it, and I’m proud of our four guys who did that. It was a good way to end an excellent meet here. Minooka does an awesome job with this invitational, and we take a lot of pride in being here and competing.

“In the mile, we not only had two of the best runners in the state, but four or five of them. It was nice to see the local guys from our conference come through. When John and Soren race against each other, it just makes both of them better. I’m excited with our team’s effort so far. This is a very hard-working group, and they’re very focused to get better each week.”

Derrius Rodgers ranks second in the 100 and has the third-best times in the 200 and 400. He also was on a 4x100 relay that is ranked eighth. And John Meyer has the best shot put in the state by nearly 2 feet and also ranks sixth in discus.

Fitzgerald fills void for Minooka

dgoss@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – With ace Joe Butler not feeling quite right, Minooka baseball coach Jeff Petrovic decided to keep him off the mound during this week’s Southwest Prairie Conference three-game series against Plainfield East.

Senior right-hander Tyler Fitzgerald made the most of his opportunity to fill the void Wednesday afternoon, pitching a complete-game five-hitter as the Indians went up 2-0 in the series with a 7-1 victory.

Fitzgerald’s effort came on the heels of a 1-0 victory Tuesday, when junior left-hander Tyler Talbot tossed a shutout.

“Tyler Fitzgerald did a great job,” Petrovic said. “He doesn’t wow you, he doesn’t throw hard. He stays down and works the corners. But with Joe (Butler) not feeling well, it was nice to see him do this.”

Petrovic then smiled and added, “He kind of surprised me.”

Fitzgerald had to finish the game in the rain, which is hardly his specialty.

“I hate pitching in the rain,” he admitted. “I can’t use my curveball.”

What he did all afternoon was keep the ball in the strike zone and down. He went to three balls in the count on only three batters, struck out five, walked nobody, hit one and

kept sophomore shortstop Hayden Laczynski busy.

“I had to throw ground balls,” Fitzgerald said. “We were a little short on arms, and I was the next one up. I felt good all day, and Hayden played really well behind me.”

“Tyler was really good,” Laczynski said of Fitzgerald. “It’s great for an infielder to play behind a pitcher like him.”

Minooka (9-7, 5-3) staked Fitzgerald to a two-run lead in the first inning against East starter Joe Antonopolous. Jon Butler’s single ignited the uprising. A walk, passed ball and error all helped, and Brandon Rossiter knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly.

The Indians added a run in the second when the first of Laczynski’s three solid hits filled the bases, setting up Jon Butler’s sacrifice fly.

“It’s about time,” Laczynski said of his three-hit day. “I’ve been struggling a bit.”

Logan O’Brien doubled and Rossiter dropped an RBI single into short right field in the fifth to make it 4-0.

Minooka put it away with three runs in a sixth inning where Laczynski doubled in a run and East (10-7, 4-4) committed three errors.

“We didn’t do a lot of anything well,” Bengals coach Adam O’Reel said. “There were two unofficial errors early that helped them jump out to a lead, our defense was awful and

this might have been Joe’s (Antonopolous’) worst outing.

“I wouldn’t say we had bad approaches at the plate, but what it comes down to is they made plays and we didn’t. It’s all about defense and pitching, then you figure out how to score runs.”

East had a chance to score first in the top of the first, but Laczynski, who started a 6-4-3 double play in the second inning, leaped and snagged Antonopolous’ line drive ticketed for left field with a runner on third and two outs.

Eddie Marcotte opened the top of the sixth with a home run to spoil Fitzgerald’s shutout bid, and the Bengals stranded two runners in each of the sixth and seventh innings. In the previous five innings, they had left two runners total.

“That’s two nights in a row that we didn’t walk anybody, and the error in the seventh inning might have been the only error we made in the two nights,” Petrovic said. “These last two nights give me a good feeling.

“We have good players. My theory is you stick with them. They’ve always hit and always caught the ball.”

The series concludes Thursday afternoon at East with both teams bidding to stay in the first division of the tightly bunched SPC. Bengals ace Drew DeMumbrum will face Minooka’s Brad VanAsdlen.

AREA SOFTBALL

Postseason schedule ideal for local softball fans

dgoss@shawmedia.com The postseason works out well for Joliet area softball fans who prefer not to travel long distances to see their favorites battle for survival.

In Class 4A, for example, Lockport will be a sectional host, and Joliet West, Plainfield South and Minooka are among the four predetermined regional hosts. Thornwood will host the fourth regional.

In addition to Lockport, Joliet West, Plainfield South and Minooka, other area schools in the sectional field are Lincoln-Way East, Joliet Central, Lincoln-Way Central, Providence, Plainfield Central and Romeoville.

Who will be assigned to which regional will not be determined until after the seeds are announced May 10.

However, what is known for sectionals that are not divided into two sub-sectionals is that a team always plays in

a regional it hosts, and each regional will have one of the 1 through 4 seeds and one of the 5 through 8 seeds.

The Lockport Sectional winner will face the Normal Community Sectional winner in the supersectional at Illinois State University in Normal.

Plainfield East also will host a 4A sectional, with Bolingbrook and Plainfield North in the field. The regional hosts are Batavia, Downers Grove South, Geneva and Oswego East. The Plainfield East winner will take on the Marist Sectional winner in a supersectional at Benedictine University in Lisle.

Class 3A also offers a good local flavor as Joliet Catholic and Lincoln-Way West will be regional hosts in Sub-Sectional B of the Bishop McNamara Sectional.

Also in that 11-team sub-sectional are Morris and Coal City.

The McNamara winner will face the Chillicothe Sectional winner in the

Bloomington Supersectional at Illinois Wesleyan University.

Also in 3A, Lemont will be a sectional host and will be the only area school in that field. The Lemont winner and the Glenbard South Sectional winner will collide in a supersectional at Rosemont Stadium.

The 2A Dwight Sectional contains several area schools. Peotone is in Sub-Sectional A, while regional hosts Wilmington and Seneca, along with Dwight and Reed-Custer, will play in Sub-Sectional B. The Dwight Sectional winner will tangle with the Lisle Sectional winner in another supersectional at Rosemont Stadium.

Gardner-South Wilmington will carry the area banner in 1A. The Panthers are in Sub-Sectional B of the Serena Sectional. The Leroy Sectional winner will provide the opposition for the Serena survivor in a supersectional at Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington.

ST. LOUIS – St. Louis right-hander Carlos Martinez is ready to show his appreciation to outfielder Randal Grichuk.

Grichuk robbed Anthony Rizzo of a home run with an over-the-wall catch in the first inning Wednesday to help Martinez settle into seven strong innings, and the Cardinals beat the Cubs, 5-3, to avoid a sweep to their NL Central rivals.

“It was so big I’m going to pay him a dinner in San Diego,” Martinez said.

Matt Holliday homered and the Cardinals scored twice in each of the first two innings against Kyle Hendricks (1-2).

The Cubs, the first team in the majors to 11 wins, had won three of its previous four and took the first two games of the series.

Martinez (3-0) allowed three hits and one run. He struck out five and walked three in recording his third quality start in three outings this season.

Grichuk’s highlight-reel catch seemed to provide a perfect lift for Martinez.

“It’s the second robbed homer I’ve gotten to,” Grichuk said. “Definitely being the Cubs in a big game, it’s probably my top one.”

The game was delayed 3 hours, 21 minutes by rain in the middle of the seventh. Grichuk, who jumped and reached over the wall with his glove, joked that he watched the replay of his grab 72 times during the stoppage.

Martinez seemed to get better as the game went along and retired the last six batters he faced.

“He had more of a feel than straight power,” St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said.

Martinez also added a run-scoring hit in the second to push the lead to 4-0.

Trevor Rosenthal got his fourth save by striking out the side in the ninth. It was his 100th career save.

Holliday hit a two-run shot in the first off Hendricks, who gave up seven hits and four runs over 51/3 innings.

Cubs starters had gotten through the sixth inning in 14 straight games to begin the season, a streak that matched the 1910 team for the franchise record.

“It was just a battle today,” Hendricks said. “It kind of started in the bullpen. I just didn’t have it.”

Holliday has three homers, including two in a 14-3 win Friday over Cincinnati. He managed just four during last year’s injury-plagued campaign.

Yadier Molina pushed the lead to 5-3 with an RBI single in the eighth off reliever Adam Warren.

The Cubs are 7-2 on the road and have outscored their opponents by 43 runs this season, the largest differential in the majors.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon was pleased with the way his team battled back from 4-1 down to get to within one after the lengthy delay.

“I was really impressed with the way we went about our business,” Maddon said. “They were chirpy in the clubhouse the whole time.”

Jake Arrieta (3-0, 1.23) will open a four-game series Thursday at Cincinnati against LHP Brandon Finnegan (1-0, 2.04). Arrieta has recorded three straight quality starts to begin the season.

CHICAGO – Chris Sale likes what he is feeling and hearing, the fun on the field and the music in the locker room.

In other words, the winning.

“I think it’s important, individually and as a team, to try to get off on the right foot,” Sale said after becoming the majors’ first four-game winner, leading the White Sox over the Los Angeles Angels, 2-1, on Wednesday.

“To start out with some momentum, that’s important. We’re just going to try to ride this out as long as we can.”

Sale (4-0) allowed only two Mike Trout singles and an unearned run in seven innings. He left after hitting Kole Calhoun with a pitch leading off the eighth.

Two years ago, Sale won his first five decisions.

The Sox are 10-5, their best start in a decade, matching the 2006 team. Last season, the Sox began 10-14 and didn’t reach double digits until May 26.

This season, Sale has 40 percent of Chicago’s victories.

“Aces have always been those guys that extend winning streaks and stop losing streaks,” manager Robin Ventura said. “For Saler, he’s right (there) as one of those guys. He’s as good as there is in the league.”

Nate Jones, who had pitched two innings in recording his first big league save Tuesday night, followed Sale and retired the next two hitters but advanced Calhoun with a wild pitch. Jonny Giavotella then grounded to third baseman Todd Frazier, who bounced his throw, which first baseman Jerry

Sands trapped under his right arm.

First base umpire Paul Nauert called Giavotella safe, the call was upheld on video review and Frazier was given an error.

David Robertson relieved and gave up a single to pinch-hitter Rafael Ortega, just past second baseman Brett Lawrie. The Sox closer eventually recorded a four-out save to complete a four-hitter.

“I’m glad he’s on my team,” Sale said of Robertson. “His cutter is as good of a pitch as I’ve seen anybody have in a bullpen. And he’s throwing an 85 mph curveball.”

Robertson, 6 for 6 in saves this season, is pretty impressed with Sale, as well.

“He’s really been good,” Robertson said. “He’s mixing and matching better than I’ve ever seen him.”

Trout noticed a difference in Sale, too.

“He has changed up speeds with that fastball lately,” he said. “We saw it in spring. You get one pitch to hit, and if you miss it, it puts you in a hole.”

Trout had a third hit in the game, in the ninth inning off Robertson, but was thrown out trying to reach second base after Frazier’s throw to first got past Sands.

Reluctant DH: Ventura knew how Jose Abreu would take moving from first base to designated hitter for the first time this season. But coming off Tuesday night’s game, with the first of back-to-back afternoon contests, Ventura made the decision.

“He just doesn’t like to do it, but I think he understands it,” Ventura said. “There’s a bit of a reluctance on his part.”

Blackhawks face long odds

mlazerus@suntimes.com To hear Ken Hitchcock tell it, the Blackhawks and Blues are on equal footing heading into Game 5 of their firstround playoff series. And given how every game has been decided by one goal, and how replays and balancing pucks and ill-timed penalties have decided each game, it’s easy to see why.

“There’s no gap between the two teams,” Hitchcock said. “Both teams are just going at it with whatever they’ve got right now. You feel like the four games could be anything.”

But a closer look makes the gap between the two teams every bit as wide as the 3-1 series deficit the Hawks face.

While the Blues are showing a Hawkslike resolve, the Hawks are devolving into Blues-like extracurriculars between and after the whistles, playing right into St. Louis’ hands.

Composure, discipline and veteran savvy have been the Hawks’ hallmarks for years, as their playoff experience – “The Knowledge,” as Hitchcock coined it – gave them an inherent advantage over nearly every opponent.

Yet they badly lost their composure at the end of Game 4, with Andrew Shaw’s foolish interference penalty with 2:04 left all but ending their chance at tying the game, and his meltdown earning him a suspension for Game 5.

Discipline went out the window when Corey Crawford initiated a brief brawl with Blues rookie Robby Fabbri in the second period, and later when the Hawks were handed six game misconducts for a postgame melee.

And it’s been the perennial playoff failure Blues who have shown remarkable resilience all series, continually bouncing back from adversity and unfavorable calls while the Hawks have blown leads in consecutive games.

Facing early elimination for the first time in four years, the Hawks are distracted and disjointed.

“We want to win the game [Thursday] night,” Jonathan Toews said. “And the way we do that is not losing our cool, and focusing on the task at hand, and playing the way we know how to play the game, and focusing on the details of the game. You can’t do that if you’re losing your temper, your emotions. Obviously, at the end of the game last night it was at an all-time high I think for all of us, even on the bench and on the ice. But going forward we need to focus on what we need to do and keep ourselves in check in more ways than one.”

Their lack of composure is just one reason the Hawks are on the brink.

NHL suspends Shaw 1 game for anti-gay slur

CHICAGO – As he watched the video, Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw realized exactly what he did.

“It was hard to see,” he said. “Emotions got the best of me.”

The NHL suspended Shaw for one game Wednesday for yelling an anti-gay slur from the penalty box and fined him $5,000 for an inappropriate gesture toward the officials during the Hawks’ Game 4 loss to the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday night.

Shaw will miss Game 5 in St. Louis on Thursday, and he will be required to undergo sensitivity training. The league’s punishment came after Shaw apologized for his outburst the previous night.

Speaking quietly for a few minutes before the team left for St. Louis, Shaw said he couldn’t sleep after the game and watching video of his outburst was difficult. It was video of the incident that went viral on social media, prompting sharp criticism and punishment from the NHL. “I’ll never use that word again, that’s for sure. ... That’s not the type of guy I am,” he said.

– The Associated Press – Toews, Patrick Kane, Marian Hossa and Andrew Ladd – have combined for zero goals. The Hawks’ vaunted penalty-killing unit, so good since Marcus Kruger’s return last month, has been burned for four power-play goals in the past two games. And their lack of depth on the blue line has been exposed, the failure to acquire a true No. 4 defenseman at the trade deadline glaring in the face of the Blues’ attack.

Of course, anyone who already has written off the Hawks hasn’t been paying attention the past seven years. But anyone who is certain that they’ll pull off the comeback and make another Stanley Cup run hasn’t been paying attention the past seven days.

The series is tight. The margin of victory has been razor thin. The Hawks are a bounce here or a bounce there from being tied 2-2, or having a 3-1 lead.

But the results don’t lie. The Blues have been the better team since the first drop of the puck. And if the Hawks are going to win three straight and get out of the first round, a lot has to change. And not just their tempers.

“I don’t know if there’s extra pressure,” Joel Quenneville said. “When you’re down 3-1, I think it shifts, and everybody wants to win in the worst way.

We’ve got to come with that attitude and appetite [Thursday] night. But I don’t think it’s any different than it’s been in other years.”

Joliet church celebrating 136 years reaches out every day of week

OLIET – Delois Caesar is not surprised that Second Baptist Church of Joliet has been around for 136 years.

It’s the combination of a great group of people, said Caesar – who joined in 1970 when she moved to Joliet from Mississippi – and a devoted and encouraging God. The 65-year-old believes God’s wisdom draws people there.

“The people are very nice. Loving and caring,” said Caesar. “I couldn’t ask for a better church family.”

She attends Bible study Wednesday nights and takes the three grandchildren who live with her to Sunday school each week. She also takes them to the church’s gym class weekdays after school.

“They got a lot to offer here,” Caesar said.

She loves seeing the different generations together all worshiping God and enjoying fellowship with each other. The church’s older generations offer plenty to members, she added, with their knowledge of the Bible and of life.

Caesar called the Rev. Larry V. Tyler

“a humble, loving pastor.”

A rich and lasting Joliet presence

Tyler said the church might be the oldest African-American church in Joliet, ministering in the area since 1880.

He said its longevity is because of two elements: The presence of God and the network of relationships and families, and the outreach of community support.

“One of our hallmarks is that we are community-focused,” Tyler said. “We try to be a church without walls.”

The church has an after-school program open to all children in the community. Tyler said an anti-violence youth basketball program meets Tuesdays and challenges young people to make good life choices.

“We consider this as pre-incarceration opportunities that hopefully change the paths those youths are on,” Tyler said.

Other ministries at Second Baptist include missions, ushering, a nursery, praise dance, mentoring, a health unit, a food pantry, several choirs and a van ministry for those who need a ride to and from church.

Tyler said Second Baptist has a soup kitchen Thursdays and a ministry to get

groceries to residents in the community who are in need.

“We’re pretty busy every day of the week,” Tyler said. “We try to put legs on our faith and be open and real to the residents who need a helping hand.”

Tyler has been pastor of Second Baptist for 22 years. He’s only the 16th pastor at the church since its inception. The people, he said, can’t be beat.

“I love ’em,” Tyler said. “They’re good people. We’re united together for a purpose and a passion, with a sense of devotion and service to Christ.”

Noble Moore, of Joliet and a new member of Second Baptist, said he felt the passion right away.

“I was looking for a church home,” Moore said, “and my sister invited me to go with her. The people are very friendly and the pastor is excellent. It was a nice fit.”

Second Baptist was not too big and not too small, Moore said. The people have plenty of knowledge and are willing to share it.

“It’s a church where people are not stuck up,” Moore said, “and people that want to know about the Bible and people that want to teach the Bible. ... That’s what I was looking for. I just love it down there.”

1880: A group of black Christians met in private homes and formed a congregation. Its first home was the old courthouse.

1882: Members bought the property at 156 S. Joliet St. 1888: The church is incorporated as Second Baptist Church.

Until the church was built, members met in a home on Des Plaines Avenue.

1888 to 1910: The church offered food, shelter and even showers for coal miners and other workers since indoor plumbing was considered a luxury.

1910: The church conducted night school classes and hosted weekly ice cream socials and fish fries. The basement had pingpong tables, roller skating parties, nightly Bible study groups and fellowship meetings for young people. The youth performed plays for church members and community groups.

2010: Second Baptist Church celebrates its 130th anniversary with services, a guest preacher and a banquet at the Holiday Inn in Joliet.

My Joyful Heart teen volunteers organize food drive

MOKENA – My Joyful Heart, a faithbased service organization, has a new group of volunteers who are making a big impact.

Six teenagers formed a junior board of directors to help raise funds and in-kind donations for the charity. Officers are Grace Pawelczyk of Frankfort, president; Delaney LoConte of Mokena, vice president/secretary; and Lauren Kopec of Frankfort, treasurer. Directors are Regan LoConte of Mokena, Payton Moyzis of Frankfort and Maura Fenessey of Joliet.

The teen board recently expanded a food drive that began in 2012. The teens collected brown bags from local grocery stores and created flyers with details about the food drive.

They distributed the bags with the flyers attached to more than 700 residences in Frankfort, Mokena, and Joliet. They collected the donations and brought them to My Joyful Heart’s ministry center to sort them.

My Joyful Heart provides personalized assistance and encouragement for children in need throughout Chicagoland.

Its mission is nurturing disadvantaged children with the love of Jesus Christ by providing lifes essentials so they thrive.

Smaller and shorter randomized trials are more practical, but less likely to provide definite answers. One such study was reported in 2013. About 300 people in Spain were assigned to follow either the Mediterranean diet or a low-fat diet for about four years. Intensive tests of thinking were performed at the start of the study and after four years. The people who followed the Mediterranean diet had a modest improvement in several measures of thinking.

Those who followed the low-fat diet had a slight deterioration.

In 2015, a novel observational study was reported. About 700 people, with an age range of 65 to 90, had magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed to examine their brains. Those who followed the Mediterranean diet had larger brains, or brains that had shrunk less since they were young.

They had brains that were the size of people five years younger, compared with people who did not follow the diet. The specific factors in the diet that seemed most closely tied to larger brains were eating lots of fish and little red meat.

I’m not arguing the Mediterranean diet has been proven to protect the brain. But the evidence is strong enough that I long since have adopted the diet myself.

Dear Dr. K: I know the Mediterranean diet is supposed to improve heart health.

Recently, I heard it also improves brain health. Is that pretty well established? Of all the organs I want to protect, my brain is “numero uno.”

Dear Reader: I agree with your priorities regarding organs: My brain is “numero uno,” too. And I do think the evidence is strong the Mediterranean diet does protect the brain. This diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, nuts, fish, poultry, olive oil and wine.

Most of the evidence about the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet comes from observational studies. In such studies, large numbers of people are followed for many years. Information about their lifestyle and any diseases they might have developed is collected. Most such studies have found people who follow the Mediterranean diet have a lowered risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

However, observational studies that link a lifestyle behavior to a disease (or to protection against a disease) can’t prove causation. That is, it might be true people who follow a Mediterranean diet do have a lower risk of Alzheimer’s, but that doesn’t mean the diet is the reason for the lower risk. Something else about people who follow the Mediterranean diet might protect them from Alzheimer’s.

To prove causation, scientists must conduct randomized controlled trials.

Such studies are not often done to test the effect of lifestyle on health; they are very expensive and impractical. To prove the Mediterranean diet reduced the risk of Alzheimer’s, scientists would need to have thousands of people assigned at random to either follow the Mediterranean diet or not – for 20 to 30 years. And the scientists

In bridge, though, sometimes knowledge will allow someone to play with certainty -- as in this deal.

How should South play in three notrump after West leads the spade queen?

South saw that he had seven top tricks: two spades, two diamonds and three clubs. It looked so easy to establish the extra two winners in diamonds. So, after winning the first trick with his spade king, he cashed the diamond ace ... and suddenly the contract was unmakable.

Declarer did the best he could by crossing to the dummy with a club to the 10 and leading a low heart toward his hand, but East had seen this position before. He rose with his king and, when he won the trick, returned a spade to establish his partner’s suit while West still had an entry in the heart ace.

That was well defended, but South had a safety play to make his contract a certainty.

At trick two, he leads the diamond three from his hand, planning to cover West’s card with dummy’s 10 (or taking the queen with the king).

Here, though, West would discard a club. Now declarer still finesses the 10. East takes the trick and returns a spade, but South wins, plays a club to dummy’s 10, leads a diamond to his eight, and can claim these nine tricks: two spades, four diamonds and three clubs.

Finally, note that if declarer immediately goes to dummy with a club and plays a diamond to his eight, he wins here, but will fail when West has the singleton nine.
