Planning for zombies, or the Cubs in the World Series

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – When the worldwide zombie apocalypse begins – and we all know it’s just a matter of time – will you be ready?

Not without a plan. And if you’re smart, that plan will include access to shelter, food, water, supplies and weapons, according to zombie apocalypse expert Nicholas Conrad.

“People that know how to grow their own food, people that recycle everything and people that provide their own electricity, these are the people that area going to survive a disaster,” Conrad said.

Conrad’s tongue-in-cheek zombie presentation Saturday at the Joliet Public Library offered tips for surviving all kinds of disasters beyond those involving just the living dead – natural disasters, economic collapse, invasions, the end of oil and just about everything in-between.

Having a safe place to live during a panic is the No. 1 priority on Conrad’s list. Stocking it with food and supplies comes next, followed by finding a source of electricity and gardening. He’s a big advocate of solar electricity and hydroponic gardening, two practices he utilizes in his Chicago apartment.

“The time to prepare is now, not when the disaster happens,” Conrad said.

noted, pointing to a recent incident in Turkey where 15,000 people rioted because a public park was being demolished to make way for a shopping center.

“What if the Cubs won the World Series?” Conrad said.

“It would be nuts if they won.

It would be even crazier if they lost. One-hundred-plus years of frustration would all come out at once.”

• Weapons: Try to have something in every room. “I don’t mean a sword or a gun, but maybe a board or a lamppost,” Conrad said.

He’s also a big fan of crossbows, and built one himself out of a 2 x 4. “Stealth is your greatest ally in a situation like this,” he said. “As soon as you fire your gun, everybody knows exactly where you are.”

• Finding supplies: Anytime there’s a public panic, people rush to big grocery and home

good stores, Conrad noted, so getting supplies there will not be a good bet. His recommendation: go to a sporting goods store, which offers freeze-dried foods, clothing, camping equipment, weapons and more. “Plus nobody thinks to go the Sports Authority during a disaster,” he said.

• Foraging: Having a book on edible plants is a good idea, Conrad noted. So is getting over the stigma of eating insects, which are a good source of protein. Setting traps and snares for rabbits and squirrels is another strategy.

• Longterm needs: Once the basics are in place, it’s time to think about finding a source of electricity and gardening. Left unattended, the power grid in Illinois will probably go out with two to 12 days. After that, people will have to look to alternate sources, like solar- and wind-powered systems. Solar panels can be found on many construction signs, Conrad said. And hydroponic gardening offers a fast and safe way to garden indoors.

Finally, it’s important to know if and when to leave your shelter. Conrad recommends waiting until the initial panic dies down. After packing a bag of lightweight survival gear, it’s time to head out for the wilderness.

“The middle of a popular state park may not be a good idea since it probably already will be crowded,” Conrad said.

“Some place off the beaten path, some place that not a lot of people will think of, that might be the place to go.”

Will County gets ready for textile collection week THE HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – Will County will have its annual textile collection event April 28 through May 2, when blankets, gym shoes and other items can be dropped off for re-use or recycling.

Collection bins will be set up during normal business hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in the front lobby at the Will County

Office Building, 302 N. Chicago St. in Joliet.

On May 2, Goodwill will be present to collect additional items, including small furniture, lamps, small working appliances, paintings, photo frames and other home goods.

May 2 also will feature a live radio broadcast on-location by WJOL-AM with morning host Scott Slocum promoting the event.

The program started in 2006 with recycling gym shoes. It was expanded to all textiles in 2010.

The county collects clothing, linens and towels. Items with stains, broken zippers, rips or missing buttons are recycled.

Goodwill sells clothes and fabrics in good condition.

The collection is run by the Will County Resource Recovery and Energy Division.

Looking back at a bad day for the Joliet Public Library

The library suffered about $1.5 million in damage and was closed for a month while every book was cleaned and deodorized. Head librarian Jim Johnston reported 22,671 books were lost.

“We had dumpsters outside and used snow shovels to pitch [the remains] out the windows.

With librarians, the urge to save things is very strong,” Harmon said.

Current library director Kevin Medows said staff and patrons still reference the firebombing. He feels coming so close to losing the whole collection “still influences our thinking.”

Williams was stopped by police that night and confessed to starting the library fire, as well as earlier blazes that spring in book storage rooms at Hufford Junior High School and Marycrest Early Childhood Center.

He told police actresses Cheryl Ladd and Suzanne Somers told him to set the fire.

Williams was later found not guilty by reason of insanity. Cook County records show Williams died in July 1996.

The children’s department was moved into a vacant department store nearby. The state library gave $10,000 toward replacing books and local donations were raised with a used book sale.

The 1990 expansion that

doubled the size of the library was already planned when the children’s department was firebombed. But Harmon said the incident had “a silver lining” – a feeling of ownership that continued as the city grew substantially. A branch opened inside the Louis Joliet Mall in 1995 and moved to Black Road in 2002.

“I was surprised at how interested the public was in what happened to ‘their’ library and what they could do after the fire,” Harmon said.

April 19, 1989, when Larry C. Williams stood on the hood of his gold Corvette and threw a rock and two Molotov cocktails through the windows of the Joliet Public Library.

The incendiary devices landed on the shelves in the children’s department that held books regularly used for science fair projects.

And the flames spread.

“I can still see it in my head,” Dianne Harmon, who was children’s librarian at the time, said last week. “The fire destroyed most of the nonfiction section. All of the ‘Nancy Drew’ and ‘Hardy Boys’ sets that were in a separate case

near the wall, and picture books from S to Z.” The 25th anniversary of the infamous act on Saturday was not one of celebration at the library. But the library survived the attack – and has flourished since.

The firebombing might have destroyed much more, but three witnesses saw Williams and flagged down a police officer on the next block. Firefighters were at the scene in minutes and kept flames contained to the children’s area, but smoke filled the building.

“All those plastic covers started melting with the heat and giving off fumes. Tapes and records melted. Paint from the framed paintings was dripping down the walls,” Harmon recalled.

Fallen state trooper honored Richard Warner killed in line of duty 45 years ago today

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – The death of Trooper Richard Warner, which happened 45 years ago today, still serves as a reminder of the dangers of police work.

Warner, a trooper who worked out of the Illinois State Police District 5 headquarters in Lockport, was killed April 21, 1969, after picking up a suicidal driver.

The driver fatally shot Warner, injured another state trooper and then shot himself.

On Friday, fellow troopers dedicated a plaque honoring Warner to be hung inside the District 5 building. The plaque also would remind other state troopers to stay vigilant in their work, even when working inside their own headquarters.

State police decided to honor Warner’s memory as they prepared for other me-

morial ceremonies in May. Retired State Police Capt.

Kevin Shaughnessy appeared at Friday’s ceremony for Warner to talk about how the lives of state troopers can be in danger even when they’re not called to a scene of a bank robbery or kidnapping.

“It’s the type of things that we do every day that are taken for granted that people across the United States wouldn’t think twice about,” he said.

On April 21, 1969, Warner was investigating a crash on Interstate 55 involving a driver, Raymond Hurt, who was discovered to be suicidal. Warner took Hurt back to District 5 headquarters for further investigation.

However, Hurt managed to obtain a gun and shot Warner. He injured another state trooper before turning the gun on himself.

Lockport Police Chief Terry Lemming, a former state

trooper himself, said he had researched the death of Warner. He said he had read one letter from Hurt’s family offering to give $5,000 to Warner’s family. While troopers at the time of Warner’s death knew of the incident, many others who worked for District 5 since then did not.

“What was so profound about this is that no one knew this happened at this district,” Lemming said.

Warner’s death reminded Ken Kaupas, retired state district commander and now deputy chief of the Will County Sheriff’s Department, of the death of his own partner.

He said state troopers do not get a lot of appreciation for what they do and they must be vigilant while serving the public.

“This is one of the few jobs that when you come into work in the morning, you truly don’t know if you are going to home and see your loved ones that day,” he said.

JOLIET – The Illinois State Police District 5 has been awarded 42 child safety seats from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

This grant was awarded to help increase the use of booster seats in the District 5 counties of Will, Grundy and Kendall, according to a news release from the state police. This grant is one of 51 distributed throughout Illinois as part of the Boost Your Big Kid campaign.

Booster seats reduce the risk for serious injury by 45 percent for children ages 4 to 8 years old. According to a 2011 study from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 25

percent of children age 4 to 7 were restrained by a seat belt alone and another 10 percent were riding totally unrestrained.

Illinois law requires that all children under the age of 8 must be properly restrained in an appropriate car seat or booster seat, and children 8 or older should remain in a booster seat until an adult seat belt until it fits appropriately.

Garage, vehicles lost in early morning fire

By KATE SCHOTT kschott@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Smoke detectors woke a Plainfield family after the attached garage on their home caught fire early Sunday.

Firefighters were called at 4:47 a.m. to the 15000 block of Dan Patch Drive for a report of a fire, according to Plainfield Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Jon Stratton.

Upon arrival, fire crews found a fully-involved fire in the three-car garage, which was attached to a two-story single-family home.

The residents – a husband, wife and son, along

with the family dog – were outside and said everyone was accounted for, Stratton said.

“Prior to the fire, they woke up to the smoke detector,” Stratton said. “They saw the garage was on fire. ...

They got a garden hose and started fighting it a little bit” before fire crews arrived.

Two vehicles in the garage, and one outside, were all totaled, Stratton said. The investigation into the cause was ongoing Sunday, he said. Damage is estimated at $200,000, with the thee cars and garage a total loss. Part of the vinyl siding on the house also started to melt, Stratton said.

Panel: Will County saw drop in heroin deaths

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The number of heroin overdose deaths in Will County dropped from 58 in 2012 to 38 in 2013, thanks in part to expanded educational awareness, local officials told the Young Adults Heroin Use Task Force.

However, monitoring deaths is only the tip of the iceberg, Will County Coroner Pat O’Neil told the state-appointed task force, which is collecting testimony on heroin abuse from communities throughout Illinois.

A more effective indicator might be to track overdose treatments by first responders, who often are able to save victims by using anti-opiate drugs such as Narcan.

“Our morgue would not be able to accommodate all those numbers [of potential deaths] without Narcan,” O’Neil said.

“We’d need a gymnasium.”

O’Neil was one of six local speakers at Saturday’s task force hearing at Troy Middle School in Plainfield. Also making presentations were Will County Executive Larry Walsh; Pete McLenighan, executive director of Stepping Stones abuse treatment center; Kathleen Burke, president of Strategic Prevention, a consulting firm specializing in substance abuse; Julie McCabe-Sterr, a drug court officer with the Will County State’s Attorney’s office; and Paige, a drug court participant.

O’Neil said his office has been monitoring heroin deaths since 1999, when the county had only a pair of deaths.

During the past 14 years, about 300 people have died from heroin overdose, O’Neil said.

drug. The greatest increase has been among youth age 21 and younger.

“It’s certainly a situation where this drug is very easy to get, it’s inexpensive and it’s very addictive,” O’Neil said.

“No one experiments with heroin. You use it once, and it pretty much owns you.”

McLenighan emphasized the addictive nature of the drug, explaining how heroin dependency changes a user both mentally and physically.

“It’s not a moral failure, but a chronic disease,” McLenighan said.

Treatment is a lifelong process, and those who break the habit often are at the greatest risk of overdose, McLenighan said.

Users develop a tolerance to opiates over time, and require greater amounts to get high. Abstinence decreases that tolerance, and many users

for users because drug abuse is classified as mental health problem rather than a medical problem, Burke said. Drug abuse cases usually are treated by psychiatrists rather than medical doctors. Office visit reimbursement costs can be up to 10 times higher because of the mental health classification, Burke said.

Burke said there often is a stigma attached to providing drugs like methadone and Suboxone to recovering users.

Many see such treatment as replacing one addiction with another, and patients often are treated with disdain by pharmacy staff, she said.

The online system, known as GrantCentral, was designed to make the application process easier for local organizations seeking money this year through the Will County Community Foundation, he said.

“Since we give smaller grants, we wanted there to be a simpler process. If they’re going to spend, you know, 20 hours of work for $5,000 in results, [you wonder] is that really worth it?” Trench said.

“GrantCentral streamlines the process.”

The nonprofit group, formed in 2006, awards funding to Will County nonprofits that focus on areas of health care, human services, education and cultural arts.

After spending about six months in jail to get clean – a drug court requirement – Paige was moved into the women’s recovery center. She relapsed in drug court and overdosed for the first time.

After another session in jail, she is back in recovery and scheduled to graduate from drug court in September.

But getting help to those who need it is becoming increasing difficult.

Stepping Stones, which has seen its state funding cut by 42 percent in the past six years, has a large waiting list.

Trench said the online system, designed by the nonprofit’s partner, Chicago Community Trust, allows nonprofits to store basic profile information for future use. It also stores previous applications, he said, so they can be ahead of the game if applying for the same funding next year.

Grant seekers unsure of eligibility also will be asked a few quick questions upfront so they know if they’re qualified before spending the time to fill out the application, he said.

Trench said while there may be more upfront work the first time around because groups will have to input basic profile information, the application process after that should be much more streamlined.

Port authority tackles problem at Walter Strawn crossing

By MARY BASKERVILLE Shaw Media Correspondent ELWOOD—Truck traffic at the Walter Strawn Drive railroad crossing was a major topic at a meeting of the Elwood International Port Authority this month.

The Elwood International Port Authority was created late last year in part to address concerns about growing truck traffic from CenterPoint Intermodal Center-Elwood.

The authority is an advisory board with members from the village of Elwood, the BNSF railroad and distribution companies in the CenterPoint industrial park.

Village engineer Max Bosso said the aim is to “increase safety while reducing traffic on Illinois Route 53.”

Focus lately as been at the crossing on Walter Strawn Drive because of the number

of vehicles that cross the railroad tracks near Route 53.

When the Illinois Commerce Commission approved the new Walter Strawn crossing during the development of CenterPoint Intermodal Center-Elwood, projections were for 700 vehicle crossings a day by 2014, and 1,400 crossings a day at the end of the 20-year build out.

The number of vehicles crossing the tracks on Walter Strawn already exceeds those projections.

Bosso said the ICC has told Elwood to find ways to reduce the number of daily crossings or face the possibility the state could close the crossing.

A traffic count done by the village last summer showed 8,202 vehicles a day crossing on July 9. Bridge work on Interstate 55 contributed to high totals, Bosso said. That

bridgework, which can cause truckers to seek alternate routes, has started again.

The lowest daily count, on a Sunday in July, showed 1,631 vehicles crossing the track – nearly a thousand vehicles more than the 2014 projection.

One plan under consideration by the port authority could reduce the number of vehicles crossing the tracks by 1,700 daily, Bosso said. The number could be reached, according to the port authority’s study, by prohibiting right turns on westbound Walter Strawn Drive at Baseline Road.

The effect would be to prevent truckers from using the Elwood intermodal as a pass through to go north on Baseline Road, Bosso said.

Other options were discussed by the Elwood International Port Authority

during its April meeting, but failed to gain traction. Bosso said they include: • a traffic signal light west of the tracks on Walter Strawn Drive.

• relocating Illinois 53 about 800 feet east of the tracks, which would cost an estimated $30 million.

• no turns at Baseline and Arsenal Roads.

Elwood Village Administrator Nick Narducci said a goal of the plans also would be to “clear some of the interior traffic – to move it out.”

In 2014, Elwood plans to resurface Walter Strawn Drive and extend the curb and gutter. The project is expected to take 30 days and will close portions of the road in three stages to give existing business access during construc-

By bringing together business and village officials, the Elwood International Port Authority creates a team to work on issue like traffic, garbage, safety and directional issues, Bosso said.

“We’re all working together,” he said.

The authority board of directors includes village trustees Doug Jenco, Don LaPaglia and Dean Lowrance.

Paul Nowicki represents the BNSF Railroad. Two members represent businesses in the intermodal park, Dan Flaherty for Schneider Logistics and Mike Jacobsen for DAMCO Distribution.

Minooka Community High School’s fishing team receives honor

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – The 60-some members of Minooka Community High School’s fishing team, the Minooka Anglers’ Club, got a big surprise last week.

Their coach had scheduled an after-school meeting for the group Thursday. They were to wear their jerseys and caps for pictures, and parents were asked to attend.

After a short meeting and a few snapshots, the red velvet stage curtains parted in front of them and on the stage was a long table with $5,000 worth of new fishing poles, tackle, rain suits and other fishing gear, along with the hosts of the syndicated radio program “Fishing and Outdoor Radio,” Jim DaRosa and Don Dziedzina.

The mayors of Channahon and Minooka were sitting on the stage, and in the audience were school board members, the superintendent, the principal, the Channahon village administrator and others.

The well-kept secret was that the fishing team had won the “Fishing and Outdoor Radio Show” and Plano/Frabill’s Illinois High Schools Fish Here Team of the Year.

The award was given to two teams this year – one for the best team north of Interstate 80, and the other for the best team south of the interstate.

The panel was unanimous on choosing the MCHS team for its southern award, according to Jim DaRosa.

“It’s a big honor for us,” the team’s assistant coach Dave Barney said after the presentation. “It’s phenomenal. ... It’s exciting for us and for the kids, and since so many members of the community are involved in the program, it’s a community award, too.”

Added coach Stan Tischer: “These are a great bunch of guys and a great bunch of parents. It’s a lot of work, and a lot of fun. ... We have some great sponsors, too.”

DaRosa noted that other Illinois schools treat fishing as a varsity sport that includes tryouts. The Minooka team is not like that, he said. Doing well in the tournaments is great, he said, and that’s what the Illinois High School Association recognizes.

“We recognize the schools that don’t close the doors on the other students,” DaRosa said. “We’re honoring the teams that honor fishermen at all levels. ... When you all get

together for a team meeting, there are no classes – you’re all equal.”

Dziedzina said another reason the Minooka team was chosen is it uses fishing to teach good citizenship, environmentalism and community service. Members attend such community events as Three Rivers Fest, go on field trips and do river cleanups on the Des Plaines River.

“They do a lot,” Dziedzina said. “Some schools, all they do is competitive fish.”

Minooka resident and one of the team’s volunteers Mike Hrechko can attest to the service the students do. When the rivers flooded last spring, his house was inundated. The team helped him bring things out of his basement and set up pumps to get the water out.

Freshman Jessica Volke said she enjoys being in the club.

“I’ve always loved fishing,” she said. “I like being out on the water and just being out in nature.”

Club president Dan DeGraff, a senior, said he was a fishing novice when he joined.

“I was pretty bad at fishing when I first got on the team,” he said, “but the first time I went out, I actually caught a fish.”

You also can drop off all your dead batteries and light bulbs. The Grundy County Coroner’s Office will be on hand to accept expired medication and needles.

The Illinois Poison Control Center urges you to take precautions when clearing out old chemicals, paints, etc. Do not combine chemicals, which could release toxic gasses, and keep all products in their original containers with original labels.

While doing your spring cleaning, store cleaning products out of sight in locked cabinets and out of harm’s way for children who are naturally curious. Keep cleaning products separated from food products, never leave a product open and unattended, and work in well-ventilated areas.

These all sound like no-brainers, but one of my sons was not only curious but a master at opening almost any childproof gadget. I called poison control so many times when he was little I was worried they might call Department of Children and Family Services on me.

I always kept the poison control number posted by my landline and on speed dial (he also figured out how to call them). That number is 800-2221222.

If you want to go a step further and help to clean up Minooka, join other volunteers from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday, to clean-up the winter’s garbage from the streets and parks.

Meet at the village hall, where you will be given gloves (or bring your own), garbage bags and a map of an area to be cleaned. A free lunch will be served to all volunteers, courtesy of Robinson Engineering, when the chores are done.

“She lived a very simple life,” Gina said.

But what Angelina had, she shared. She grew a large garden, canned 300 quarts of produce a year, prepared homemade jelly, baked fresh bread each week and still was making homemade ravioli in the months before she died.

“She had nothing,” Lydia said, “but she gave everything away.”

In 1969, Angelina’s mother came to live with the family, as she no longer had family members in Italy. Gina can still picture her grandmother, Angelantonia Egizio, getting off the plane, completely dressed in black – long skirt, stockings and shawl. Angelantonia did not speak English and she never learned.

“She had never left the village, ever,” Lydia said.

Gina added, “Mom took good care of her. She bathed her, cooked for her, everything.”

At age 88, Angelina underwent intense external and

internal radiation treatments for cervical cancer, which she took in stride. Her tagline for life’s challenges was, “Whata you gonna do?”

Gina, a nurse, said her mother’s ability to withstand treatments that would have broken a much younger woman testify to her mother’s strength and courage.

Angelina was 90 when she died June 13, 2013, a date that is extremely significant to the family. Lydia said Angelina was devoted to the number 13 and wore a medallion depicting 13 because June 13 is the feast day of St. Anthony of Padua.

“She died on the 13th hour of the 13th day in the year 2013,” Lydia said. “She has 13 grandchildren. Her mother died on June 13, 1977. She was truly a saint.”

CREST HILL – Simple, humble and completely devoted to family, Angelina DeAngelis of Crest Hill often expressed irritation at people that acted like “a bigga shot.”

Yet Angelina’s daughters, Gina Buldak and Lydia Marquardt, both of Joliet, agree that Angelina – who immigrated to the United States when she was pregnant with their brother, Tony DeAngelis of Crest Hill – attended daily Mass, prayed multiple rosaries a day, lovingly fed everyone with her homemade food and truly was the family’s “bigga shot” in the best possible way.

“It was the harmony in her family she created,” Lydia said, harmony that extended to the in-laws and down to Angelina’s 11 great-grandchildren. Gina added, “None of us ever fought. That would have killed her.”

Angelina was born and raised in Caramanico, Gina said. Daily life revolved around walking to a farm, working all day and then walking home. Two of Angelina’s uncles, Eugene and Gus Egizio, broke that cycle by immigrating to the United States, settling in Joliet and then sending for Angelina, Lydia said. Angelina left behind her parents, her husband Gino and 3-year-old Lydia.

“We think she was very courageous,” Gina said.

Eventually, Gino and Lydia joined the family. Gino found work with a railroad company.

Over time, Angelina had three more children, Anna Adamic of Joliet, Angelo DeAngelis of Plainfield and Gina.

When Lydia was 8, the family bought a house on Center Street in Crest Hill, where Angelina would live until 14 months before her death. The children would never learn Italian, as Angelina, proud to be an American, insisted they speak only English. Angelina never learned to drive.

McMillin (nee Phillips),of Channahon, was born the daughter of the late Clarence and Gladys (nee Collier) Phillips on March 3, 1928, in Naperville, Ill., and peacefully departed this life Thursday, April 17, 2014, surrounded by family at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet at the age of 86.

in Joliet. His family lived on a farm on Black Road, and he attended Joliet Central and then graduated from Joliet Junior College before getting his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, according to previous Herald-News articles.

He earned a doctorate from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Zurich in 1957.

As NASA describes on its website, while under pressure during the U.S.-Soviet space race, Houbolt was the catalyst in securing U.S. commitment to the science and engineering theory that eventually carried the Apollo crew to the moon and back safely.

His efforts in the early 1960s are largely credited with convincing NASA to focus on the

Rubin “Hurricane” Carter never surrendered hope of regaining his freedom, not even after he was convicted of a triple murder, then convicted again and abandoned by many prominent supporters.

For 19 long years, the prizefighter was locked in a prison cell far away from the spotlight and the adulation of the boxing ring. But when he at last won his biggest fight Rubin Carter – for exoneration – he betrayed little bitterness. Instead, Carter dedicated much of his remaining life to helping other prisoners and exposing other injustices.

The middleweight title contender, whose murder convictions became an international symbol of racial injustice and inspired a Bob Dylan song and a Hollywood film, died Sunday. He was 76.

The New Jersey native, who had suffered from prostate cancer, died in his sleep at his home in Toronto, John Artis, his former co-defendant and longtime friend and caregiver, told The Canadian Press.

Carter “didn’t have any bitterness or anger – he kind of got above it all. That was his great strength,” said Thom Kidrin, who became friends with Carter after visiting him several times in prison.

Durbin says he’s taking Oberweis seriously

By SARA BURNETT The Associated Press CHICAGO – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said he’s taking his opponent in the November election more seriously than any challenger since he first was elected to the Senate nearly two decades ago.

Durbin’s rival, dairy magnate and GOP state Sen. Jim Oberweis, is considered a long shot to unseat the Senate’s second-ranking Democrat. Yet Durbin has been staffing up statewide field offices, bringing on social media-savvy campaign veterans and banking more than $6 million.

Durbin said he doesn’t want to underestimate Oberweis, who enters the race with personal wealth, statewide name recognition from a chain of family dairies and ice cream

shops and half dozen bids for public office. He’s also facing a mid-term election climate that’s historically tough on the sitting president’s party.

“I’m not going to have anybody at the end of this campaign say, ‘He didn’t take it seriously,’ ” said Durbin, who’s seeking his fourth U.S. Senate term.

But there may be more to the decision than Durbin playing it safe.

For all that Oberweis may have going for him, he also has a history of gaffes on issues such as abortion and immigration that has turned off voters in such a blue state. Democrats could draw attention to him in an attempt to paint Republicans up and down the ticket as out of touch.

That could be particularly important as Democrats seek to

hold on to the governor’s office.

Gov. Pat Quinn faces Winnetka businessman Bruce Rauner, a multimillionaire who has said he’s focused on turning around the state’s struggling economy, in a race considered one of the most competitive in the country.

“If [Democrats] can put Rauner and Oberweis in the same basket in any way, it really is to their advantage,” said Nick Kachiroubas, a visiting assistant professor at DePaul University’s School of Public Service.

Democrats also are working to hold on to four seats the party picked up in Congress in 2012, and hoping to win an additional seat in southern Illinois, where Democratic Judge Ann Callis is taking on Republican U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis. Appearing to be in the throes of a

Former Illinois death row inmate details difficulties The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – A former death row inmate whose wrongful murder conviction helped bring about the end of Illinois’ death penalty said life has recently been more difficult with renewed questions about his innocence.

Anthony Porter spent 16 years on death row for the 1982 killings of two people, but the confession of another man, Alstory Simon, led to Porter’s release in 1998 just days before his scheduled execution. Then last year, Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez said a letter from Simon’s attorneys outlined reasons that warranted another look at the circumstances surrounding Simon’s confession and conviction.

Porter told the Chicago Sun-Times that he’s angry about the decision to re-exam-

ine the case. He said he thinks it is a conspiracy to ruin his reputation and that of former Gov. George Ryan, who pardoned Porter, and to discredit the anti-death penalty movement.

“They’re trying to destroy me and Gov. Ryan at the same time,” Porter told the newspaper for a story published Sunday.

Cook County state’s attorney spokeswoman Sally Daly declined to comment Sunday.

Porter said the situation has caused him illness and stress and that he’s an innocent man.

He also told the newspaper that he was allegedly tortured by police.

“They keep on bringing the same old stuff up,” he said. “...

I’m suffering. I’m tired.”

Porter’s case helped lead Ryan to halt all executions in Illinois; He declared a morato-

rium on executions in 2003 and cleared death row by commuting the death sentences of more than 150 inmates to life in prison. Gov. Pat Quinn abolished the death penalty in 2011.

Earlier this month, the Sun-Times reported that City of Chicago attorneys believed that prosecutors’ decision to release Porter and charge Simon was “political,” according to a 2001 memo the newspaper obtained. The memo was written as the city was deciding whether to settle or fight a lawsuit brought by Porter.

Porter received more than $145,000 in restitution from Illinois in 2000. But five years later, a jury rejected his claim for $24 million in a lawsuit alleging Chicago police conspired to wrongfully charge him in the slayings.

Simon pleaded guilty and is serving a 37-year sentence.

Oberweis now sees Durbin as vulnerable, even if the National Republican Senatorial Committee – the organization leading the GOP’s attempted takeover of the U.S. Senate – does not. The NRSC has labeled Illinois and a half dozen other states “very competitive,” but not among the “vulnerable” or

“toss-up” states the group is targeting and spending money in.

“People are fed up with career politicians,” Oberweis said, noting that Durbin has served in Congress and the state Legislature for more than three decades. “I think I have as good a chance as anyone.”

Other Republicans seem to have had doubts. Some GOP leaders cautioned Oberweis not to get in the race, fearing he’d drag down the ticket. His far lesser known opponent in the March primary came within a few points of defeating him. And U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk initially said he wouldn’t campaign with Oberweis because he preferred to maintain his working relationship with Durbin. Kirk, the top elected Republican in Illinois, has since reversed course.

STATE BRIEFS Police: 6 people injured in Easter party shooting MONTGOMERY – Authorities said six people were injured in a shooting at an Easter party in suburban Chicago.

Montgomery Police Chief Daniel Meyers tells Chicago’s WBBM-TV that the shooter allegedly got out of an SUV and fired bullets into the garage of a home where an Easter party was taking place and children were present. The shooting happened around 12:30 a.m.

Sunday.

Four men and two women between the ages of 20 and 30 were wounded. No charges have been filed.

The Kane County Major Crimes Task Force is investigating.

Video gambling list prompts questions SPRINGFIELD – A proposed “exclusion list” designed to keep criminals away from the

video gambling industry is prompting questions from those who want more protections to help problem gamblers.

Illinois has a voluntary self-exclusion list for people identifying as problem gamblers. They could be arrested if found in a casino.

Proposed video gambling legislation said if the Illinois Gaming Board finds someone applying for permits has a criminal history related to gambling, they’ll be put on another list. But there isn’t one for problem gamblers and video gambling.

Some anti-gambling advocates want the industry to check IDs against such a list to prevent problem gambling.

Gene O’Shea of the gaming board tells the (Springfield) State Journal-Register it’s not practical to do so at the thousands of video gambling sites in Illinois.

NATION&WORLD On eve of marathon, festivities, tight security

By AMY CRAWFORD The Associated Press BOSTON – In many ways, it felt like any other pre-marathon Sunday in Boston.

Families celebrated Easter, diners enjoyed the spring weather at sidewalk cafes, and runners – easily identified by their trim builds and colorful jackets – picked up last-minute supplies for what will be the second-largest field in the history of the Boston Marathon.

But even as runners focused on the exhilaration of crossing the finish line, the festive atmosphere was inevitably tinged with sorrow, as runners, family members and spectators recalled the twin bombings at last year’s race that killed three people and injured 260.

Marathon runners were blessed at an emotional church service that celebrated Easter and remembered the victims, while heightened security measures, including bag checks, were in place at marathon events.

“It’s different, coming back,” said Gisele Goldstein, 55, of Germantown, Tenn., who planned to run her 12th Boston Marathon this year. “It’s not just me – there’s a sadness.”

At City Hall, a fast-moving line of several hundred runners and their families stretched around the building, where race organizers served a pre-race pasta dinner.

“So many of us are running this year because of that day,” said Justin Jackson, 32, of Chicago.

Preparing for Monday’s race has been emotional, he said. While it had not initially occurred to him to be nervous about another terrorist attack, a bomb scare Tuesday night “regenerated the worry that there might be crazy people out there.”

There have been other tense moments – such as when an alarm went off Friday, during the Runners’ Expo at the Hynes Convention Center. People were spooked, Goldstein said,

even though it turned out to have been a test.

But runner Susan Campbell, 41, of Waverley, Nova Scotia, said she felt completely safe returning to Boston this year.

“What are the chances of it happening again?” said her husband, Andy Legere, 41, who was planning to cheer her on near the finish line, along with their two daughters.

“I never had any doubts about coming back,” Campbell said. Still, she felt a weight this year when she collected her bib near the finish line. “It was a little sad, walking up Boylston Street and remembering.”

Ricardo Corral, 53, of New York, who planned to race in the hand-cycle division of the wheelchair race Monday – his eighth marathon – said he was reassured by the heightened security.

“We are not nervous,” he said. “We know the police will be here to protect people.”

Corral added that it was especially important to him and his teammates to return this year, to support Boston and each other. “As the signs say, ‘Boston Strong,’ ” he said.

“That’s why we come back.”

That determination was echoed by many runners, including Scott Johnson, 54, of Atlanta.

“There’s a sense of resiliency,” said Johnson, executive director of the Scott Rigsby Foundation, a nonprofit that supports people who have lost limbs and has raised money for last year’s bombing victims.

“It’s sadness, but it’s also a kind of fortitude. Two people created the violence, but millions counter it with love and support. I like those odds!”

Ben Rancourt, 64, of Ste-Germaine, Quebec, was planning to run his eighth Boston Marathon along with his three younger brothers.

“We’re going to buy beer for the after party!” he said. “We’ll see, [Monday], with the fans on both sides of the road – it will feel very great!”

Study: Fuels from corn waste not better than gas

WASHINGTON – Biofuels made from the leftovers of harvested corn plants are worse than gasoline for global warming in the short term, a study shows, challenging the Obama administration’s conclusions that they are a cleaner oil alternative and will help combat climate change.

A $500,000 study paid for by the federal government and released Sunday in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Climate Change concludes that biofuels made with corn residue release 7 percent more greenhouse gases in the early years compared with conven-

tional gasoline.

While biofuels are better in the long run, the study said they won’t meet a standard set in a 2007 energy law to qualify as renewable fuel.

The conclusions deal a blow to what are known as cellulosic biofuels, which have received more than a billion dollars in federal support but have struggled to meet volume targets mandated by law.

About half of the initial market in cellulosics is expected to be derived from corn residue.

The biofuel industry and administration officials immediately criticized the research as flawed. They said it was too simplistic in its analysis of carbon loss from soil,

which can vary over a single field, and vastly overestimated how much residue farmers actually would remove.

“The core analysis depicts an extreme scenario that no responsible farmer or business would ever employ because it would ruin both the land and the long-term supply of feedstock. It makes no agronomic or business sense,” said Jan Koninckx, global business director for biorefineries at DuPont.

Later this year the company is scheduled to finish a $200 million-plus facility in Nevada, Iowa, that will produce 30 million gallons of cellulosic ethanol using corn residue from nearby farms.

Police: Man pelted woman at Easter party PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh police said a man threw hardboiled eggs at his girlfriend during an Easter egg decorating party, then tried to attack police.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported Sunday that 27-year-old Aaron Goempel was arrested on simple and aggravated assault charges.

Police said they responded to a fight call to find a woman with a red and swollen right eye. She told police Goempel threw the eggs after she accused him of cheating on her.

Authorities said that after police made their way past a makeshift barricade into a bedroom, Goempel reached for a row of knives and swords before he was subdued. They said he yelled racist obscenities at one officer and kicked another in the groin.

Court records don’t indicate whether he has a defense attorney.

NEW YORK – General Mills is scrapping a controversial plan to strip consumers of their right to sue the food company.

The company, which owns Cheerios, Progresso and Yoplait, had posted a notice on its website notifying visitors of a change to its legal terms – visitors using its websites or engaging with it online in a variety of other ways meant they would have to give up their right to sue.

Instead, the new terms said, people would need to have disputes resolved through informal negotiation or arbitration.

The Minnesota-based company’s decision was widely denounced on social media after The New York Times wrote a story Wednesday bearing the headline, “When ‘Liking’ A Brand Online Voids the Right to Sue.” The next day, General Mills clarified the meaning of its new terms to say they did not apply when people engaged with its brands on Facebook and Twitter.

The terms would apply in instances such as when people subscribed to one of its publications or downloaded its coupons from its websites, General Mills said.

Despite the clarification, the company apparently continued to feel pressure regarding its new terms, and issued another statement late Saturday saying that it decided to return to the previous legal terms.

Police identified the boy as Jai’Launi Tinglin and the girl as Ayini Tinglin. They shared the same father.

Their 4-year-old sister – Jai’Launi’s twin – was hospitalized in stable condition at St. John’s.

The children’s 63-year-old grandfather and a 55-year-old woman were listed in stable condition at other hospitals.

The woman’s relationship to the others is unclear.

A firefighter who suffered a minor injury was treated and released from a hospital.

Ferry transcript reveals confusion over evacuation

By GILLIAN WONG and HYUNG–JIN KIM The Associated Press JINDO, South Korea – The South Korean ferry that sank was crippled by confusion and indecision well after it began listing, a radio transcript released Sunday showed, suggesting the chaotic situation may have added to a death toll that could eventually exceed 300.

About 30 minutes after the Sewol began tilting, a crew member asked a marine traffic controller whether passengers would be rescued if they abandoned ship off South Korea’s southern coast. The crew member posed the question three times in succession.

That followed several statements from the ship that people aboard could not move and another in which someone declared that it was “impossible to broadcast” instructions.

Many people followed the captain’s initial order to stay below deck, where it is feared they remain trapped. Sixty-one bodies have been recovered, and about 240 people are still missing.

“Even if it’s impossible to broadcast, please go out and let the passengers wear life jackets and put on more clothing,” an unidentified official at Jindo Vessel Traffic Services Center urged at 9:24 a.m. Wednesday, 29 minutes after the ferry first reported trouble, according to the transcript released by South Korea’s coast guard.

“If this ferry evacuates passengers, will you be able to rescue them?” the unidentified crew member asked.

“At least make them wear life rings and make them escape!” the traffic-center official responded.

“If this ferry evacuates passengers, will they be rescued right away?” the crew member asked again.

“Don’t let them go bare – at least make them wear life rings and make them escape!” the traffic official repeated.

“The rescue of human lives from the Sewol ferry ... the captain should make his own decision and evacuate them.

We don’t know the situation

very well. The captain should make the final decision and decide whether you’re going to evacuate passengers or not.”

“I’m not talking about that,” the crew member said.

“I asked, if they evacuate now, can they be rescued right away?”

The traffic official then said patrol boats would arrive in 10 minutes, though another civilian ship was already nearby and had told controllers that it would rescue anyone who went overboard.

The ferry sank with 476 people on board, many of them students from a single high school. The cause of the disaster is not yet known, but prosecutors have said the ship made a sharp turn before it began to list. Several crew members, including the captain, have been arrested on suspicion of negligence and abandoning passengers.

More than 170 people survived the sinking of the Sewol, which had been on its way from the South Korean port city of Incheon to the southern island of Jeju. The captain took more than a half hour to issue an evacuation order, which several passengers have said they never heard.

The confirmed death toll jumped during the weekend after divers finally found a way inside the sunken vessel and quickly discovered more than a dozen bodies. They had been hampered for days by strong currents, bad weather and low visibility.

The South Korean news agency Yonhap reported that another body was recovered early Monday near the sunken ship.

Families of the missing are staying on Jindo Island, where information sheets taped to the walls of a gymnasium offered details to help identify any corpses, including gender, height, length of hair and clothing.

It was too little for Lee Joung-hwa, a friend of a crew member who is among the missing.

“If only they could have made some kind of image of the person’s face. Who can tell who this person is just by height and weight?” Lee said.

Supreme Court diluting U.S. laws The latest ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court, striking down “aggregate limits” relating to political campaign funding has led to a complete reversal of contribution laws, enacted in the aftermath of Watergate to prevent rich Americans from buying votes.

The Supreme Court in McCutcheon v Federal Election Commission struck down the overall limits on campaign contributions, although it did not touch the limit (of $2,600 an election) on individual contributions to Presidential or Congressional candidates.

Led by chief justice John Roberts and four other conservative judges, the court said the overall limits intrude on a citizen’s ability to exercise the most fundamental First Amendment activity. Justice Clarence Thomas, the most conservative member of the court, said he would have gone further and removed all restric-

tions on political contributions.

Critics have, however, slammed the judgment arguing that this would encourage political corruption on an unheard of scale. Justice Stephen Breyer, one of the four dissenting judges, warned that the ruling “eviscerates our nation’s campaign finance laws.” Campaign finance reforms were introduced in the U.S. in the early 1970s following the Watergate scandal, to reduce the role of big money in elections.

The Federal Election Campaign Act of 1972 required that candidates must disclose the source of contributions and campaign expenditures. Later, statutory limits were imposed on contributions and the FEC was established. Over the decades, laws relating to campaign funding have been tweaked with limits set on donations.

An individual cannot give more than $2,600 to any candi-

date in an election, which meant a maximum of $5,200 (for the primaries and general election).

An aggregate limit for individual contributions of $48,600 was also fixed for donations to all candidates. A higher aggregate limit of $74,600 was set for contributions to national party committees or political action committees (PACs). The aggregate limit for all contributions was $123,200.

But the latest Supreme Court judgment renders this limit meaningless, as it removes the aggregate limit on donations to PACs. And while there are limits on how much a PAC can give to a candidate, no limits on the number of PACs exist.

Unfortunately, the U.S. Supreme Court has, in a series of judgments in recent years, diluted America’s tough laws relating to political contributions and preventing the influence of big money.

JJC’s ultimate goal: Another trip to Tyler VIEWS Dick Goss

J

oliet Junior College sophomore third baseman Tyler Thorson said the Wolves’ aspirations are no secret.

“Our expectations are that we will get to Tyler, (Texas),” Thorson, a Minooka graduate said of the site for the NJCAA Division III World Series. “If we don’t, it will be a disappointment.

“We know what we’ve got.

We’ve played quite a few good teams ever since we got back [from the season-opening southern trip]. Every game we’ve lost, we beat ourselves.”

JJC, whose roster is loaded with local talent, entered this past weekend with a 23-13 record after opening 3-8.

Coach Wayne King’s team is no stranger to the national spotlight. The Wolves, who were ranked No. 1 in the Division III preseason poll, have reached the national tournament 11 times in the last 20 seasons. They won championships in 1994, 2008 and 2012. They were second in 1995 and 2007, third in 1997 and 2006, and finished fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth once each.

There are aspects of this team that suggest Tyler indeed may be the ultimate destination.

The Wolves are potent offensively, they are their usual aggressive selves on the bases and they have a solid five-man starting rotation.

If they can get the defensive side of the game in order, all signs would be positive.

“The other day against Kankakee, we won, 1-0, even though we made four errors, but we turned five double plays. Go figure,” King said.

“That’s been the story all season for us. We’re been inconsistent catching the ball.”

“We have a few good arms and we get double-digit hits every game,” Thorson said.

“We’ve got to make plays. The thing is, we’ve been making four or five errors and still winning against good teams.”

One hand washes the other.

“The times that we have really struggled defensively is when the pitchers walk people,” Thorson said. “Then we aren’t as ready in the field and make errors.”

It’s not that the Wolves aren’t capable of playing consistently well defensively, it just has not happened yet.

Meanwhile, the starting rotation of Josh Jiminez (Minooka), Kevin Ruff (Minooka), Josh Wojnarowski (Joliet Central), Matt DeGraw (Lockport) and Thomas Goodyear (Romeoville) has been dependable. Jiminez, Ruff and Goodyear all entered the weekend 5-1 and all five starters had ERAs below 3.00.

Jiminez transferred back home to JJC from Bellarmine for his sophomore year.

Ruff did not play last season because he was serving an internship toward his degree in physical therapy. He will continue pursuit of his physical therapy degree next year

“I wish we had him another year,” King said.

Of the 162 runs the Wolves allowed through Friday, 87 were earned. So about 46 percent were unearned. While that’s far from ideal, the JJC bats have been downright scary.

The Wolves rank among the national leaders in

several offensive categories.

The team batting average is .343, on-base percentage .430, slugging percentage .469, OPS .899. JJC has hit 75 doubles and 24 triples.

Individual averages include Thorson .438, Jonathan Bolton (Plainfield Central) .429, Ben Kirchler .423, Steve Wittkamp (Minooka) .417, Nick Fleischauer (Minooka)

.416, TJ Condon (Minooka) .410, Kevin Ganzer (Joliet West) .400, Fleischauer, Condon, Thorson, Kirchler and Ganzer entered the weekend with an OPS above 1.000.

Condon, the No. 1 catcher, did not play last season but returned with a vengeance.

“No one runs on us with TJ catching,” Thorson said.

“TJ is having a great year,” King said. “He has really been hitting the ball.”

A statistic King likes is how many Wolves are driving in runs, big runs. The RBI leaders include Colten Trager 27, Thorson 24, Condon 23, Ron Sessler (Lockport) 19, Alex Bebar (Minooka) 17, Darrell Collins (Plainfield South) 16 and Wittkamp 15.

“We don’t have a Mark Gotts driving in 80 runs,” King said of the former JJC All-American. “Imagine that.

That was incredible. What we have now is everyone contributing some big RBIs.” Another trip to Tyler, Texas? It could happen.

By ANDREW SELIGMAN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Nene dominated with 24 points, Trevor Ariza scored 18, and the Washington Wizards rallied from 13 down to beat the Bulls, 102-93, in their playoff opener Sunday night.

John Wall scored 16 in his postseason debut. Marcin Gortat added 15 points and 13 rebounds, and the fifth-seeded Wizards pulled out the victory even though they looked like they were ready to be blown out.

They cut a 13-point deficit to one in the third and trailed by three going into the fourth, before outscoring the Bulls 18-6 over the final six minutes to come out on top in their first playoff appearance since 2008.

Game 2 is Tuesday.

Gortat’s layup started the decisive run, and Trevor Ariza gave the Wizards an 88-87 lead when he hit a pair of free throws with 4:17 remaining.

Jimmy Butler tied it for the Bulls with one of his own, but a layup by Gortat and basket

by Nene made it 92-88, and Washington hung on after Bulls’ Joakim Noah cut it to two on a tip-in with 2:11 left.

Gortat hit two free throws and added a jumper with 34 seconds left to make it a sixpoint game, and the Wizards took the early lead in the bestof-seven series.

Nene dominated from the start and hit 11 of 17 shots.

Andre Miller came on strong down the stretch to finish with 10 points, and the Wizards pulled this one out even though Wall and Bradley Beal (13 points) combined to shoot just 7 of 25.

Kirk Hinrich and D.J. Augustin each scored 16 points, and Butler had 15. Taj Gibson added 12 points, Mike Dunleavy Jr. and Carlos Boozer each scored 11, and Noah added 10 points and 10 assists. But after posting more wins since Jan. 1 than any other Eastern Conference team, the Bulls find themselves in a hole.

made it a three-point game going into the fourth.

The Bulls overcame a 14-point first half by Nene and took a 54-48 lead to the locker room after a strong second quarter.

Augustin drove for a threepoint play with just over a minute left to finish the first-

half scoring and start a 13-3 run that stretched into the third quarter.

Gibson blocked a driving Wall with about 24 seconds left in the half, and the Bulls continued to pour it on after the break.

Dunleavy, who missed all five shots in the first two

quarters, heated up in a big way in the third. He started the quarter with a 3-pointer and kept it going after Ariza hit one of his own.

Butler answered with a layup and a 3, and Hinrich capped the run with a driving reverse layup to make it 64-51 with 9:50 left in the third.

Ventura unsuccessfully challenged, claiming the ball hit De Aza or the bat. The ruling from umpires in New York was that the call on the field stood – that the batter was out on a checked swing.

De Aza said the ball hit both his hand and the bat.

The ball appeared to change direction for some reason.

“I’m not even going to check (replay). I know what happened,” De Aza said. “I’m just in shock, that’s all I can say.”

Ventura got no real explanation on the final decision.

“It’s another one of those vague it just stands,” he said.

“They’re saying they don’t have any evidence that it hit the bat.”

Reliever Shawn Tolleson got the third consecutive strikeout in the inning before the Rangers opted to intentionally walk Danks. Semien then tripled off the base of the left-center field wall to make it 8-2.

“That’s a little fire, it gives you a little fire when you see that happen right in front of you,” he said.

“I’m glad I got the result and we as a team got the result.”

Cubs fall to Reds at Wrigley; have lost last six of seven

By PATRICK ROSE The Associated Press CHICAGO – Homer Bailey doesn’t even need to be at his best to win at Wrigley Field.

Bailey pitched six scoreless innings in a friendly ballpark for his first win of the season and Jay Bruce homered and doubled as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Cubs, 8-2, on Sunday.

“He hasn’t been his normal dominant self, but his slider has gotten a lot better,” Reds manager Bryan Price said.

“It’s a pitch that he’s worked on for a long time. It seems like that pitch has really turned a corner and got him some big outs today.”

Bailey (1-1) struck out eight while allowing six hits and three walks. He came into the game with 8.16 ERA after signing a big extension in the offseason with Cincinnati.

Zack Cozart hit a two-run

homer for Cincinnati, which took two of three this weekend from the Cubs and has won 17 of 19 games at Wrigley Field.

The Reds have won 10 straight when Bailey faces the Cubs. He is 7-0 in his last 10 outings against the Cubs and 5-0 in his past six at Wrigley Field.

The Reds are averaging 6½ runs a game in Bailey’ starts.

“It seems like every time I take the mound the bats show up. I’m just glad I was finally able to help them out,” said Bailey.

The Cubs have lost six of seven.

Carlos Villanueva (1-4) was tagged for five runs and nine hits in 4 2⁄3 innings.

With two outs in the fourth, Devin Mesoraco and Cozart hit back-to-back RBI doubles to take a 2-0 lead. Mesoraco has a hit in all nine games he’s played this season and leads the team in RBIs with

11. He missed the first week of the season with a strained oblique. Later in the inning, Bailey helped himself with an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0.

“Both times we’re in trouble with two outs and it’s the big leagues, you’ve got to put them away,” Villanueva said. “When you give a team like that, an offensive team, a chance to throw a couple runs on the board they’ll take advantage of it.”

Mesoraco finished with three hits.

“Little League, rec ball, whatever it is. This is definitely the hottest I’ve ever been,” Mesoraco said.

Todd Frazier added an RBI double and Ryan Ludwick a run-scoring single off Villanueva in the fifth inning.

Villanueva wasn’t much better than his previous start at St. Louis. He gave up a career-high nine runs over

three-plus innings in a 10-4 loss to St. Louis.

“It might seem like my (pitches) flattened out. I didn’t really feel tired, but, you know, obviously the stuff wasn’t as crisp,” said Villanueva. “I thought I had good stuff, a lot better plan today (than my last start). Just, you know, one pitch away those two innings, you know, two outs you got to be able to (finish).”

Cubs reliever Jose Veras served up Bruce’s leadoff shot in the seventh and Cozart’s two-run shot two outs later.

The Cubs didn’t score until the seventh, getting a pair of RBI singles from Ryan Sweeney and Nate Schierholtz off reliever Manny Parra. Parra was lifted with one out and the bases loaded. Sam LeCure entered and got Welington Castillo to ground into a double play.

ARLINGTON, Texas – White Sox manager Robin Ventura succinctly and aptly described the series finale at Texas.

“It’s an odd game,” Ventura said after the 16-2 victory Sunday that ended the Sox’s four-game losing streak.

There was the bases-loaded triple by the fill-in leadoff hitter Marcus Semien after an intentional walk to the No. 9 batter, the strikeout that stood on a replay challenge after Alejandro De Aza insisted he was hit by the pitch, and Sox starter Erik Johnson allowing two runs on only one hit over five innings.

“It’s always a good day if you get a win, the team gets a win,” Johnson said. “If you can go out and compete without your best stuff and your team overcomes and puts up a lot of runs, it’s always a positive.”

Jose Abreu and Jordan Danks each had two-run homers while Johnson combined with three relievers on a two-hitter against the Rangers, who had won five in a row.

The Sox went ahead to stay with three unearned runs off Robbie Ross (1-1) in the fifth, including Abreu’s fifth homer of the season for a 5-2 lead.

Johnson (1-1) allowed only a single, but the right-hander walked the leadoff batter the first four innings and threw only 44 of his 87 pitches for strikes. Texas also scored on a wild pitch, and had another runner thrown out trying to do the same.

“You’re either effectively wild or effectively lucky,” Ventura said.

They’re built on speed, skill, talent and all the elegant and electric highlight-reel stuff, but the Blackhawks are first and foremost pro athletes – hypercompetitive alpha males running on adrenaline, testosterone and pride.

And nobody likes to be pushed around.

“You can’t just be hit,” defenseman Michal Rozsival said. “Sometimes you’ve got to give a hit, too. We can’t have them bully us all the time.”

Of course, as so many of us nonprofessional athletes – running on adrenaline, self-preservation and fear – learned through the years, the best way to deal with a bully is to ignore and outsmart him. Not to let him get in your head. Not to fall into his trap.

Not to let him win.

The Hawks are letting the Blues win.

The Hawks are losing their composure, losing the puck and losing games. They’re jumping into shoving matches after nearly every whistle and running their mouths.

They’re taking liberties they usually don’t take, getting away with some (Duncan Keith with a few aggressive slashes) and getting tagged on others (Kris Versteeg tackling Derek Roy well after a whistle, Bryan Bickell’s knee-on-knee hit on Vladimir Sobotka and, of course, Brent Seabrook’s devastating hit on David Backes that earned him a three-game suspension).

They’re playing Blues hockey. Which is exactly what the Blues want. The Blues are doing all those things, too, of course. They’re just better at it.

“We might have played into their hands, but we’ve got to get back to our hockey,” said forward Brandon Saad, one of the few Hawks to admit that maybe they need to rein themselves in a bit as they try to rally from a 2-0 series deficit. “Because when we’re playing that way, we do a good job. And that’s how we win.”

Exactly. The Hawks, who always have bristled a bit at the “finesse” label, have proved their manliness in the past, showing they can handle the rough stuff. And as center Michal Handzus was quick to point out, the Hawks went

from awful to all right once they started hitting back in the second period of Game 2.

But if you’re hitting, it means you don’t have the puck. And the Hawks win with their puck-possession game, not their physical play. It’s a fine line – one they walked expertly against the Kings and Bruins last spring, but one they clearly have crossed in this series. The Hawks have been hit with 15 penalties through two games, nine in Game 2.

As good as the penalty kill has been, the Hawks can’t possibly win this series using it nine times a night. They’ve got to keep their heads in the game and out of, well, other places.

“Obviously, we cannot take as many penalties as [in Game 2],” Handzus said. “We can be more disciplined, that’s for sure. But you need to play physical, and you’ve got to push back right away.”

Perhaps, but only to an extent. The Hawks can’t sacrifice the puck for a hit. They can’t get away from what makes them great.

The Hawks’ speed, their greatest asset, has been all but neutralized.

BONNETS AND BARKS Shorewood HUGS hosts sixth Hounds Easter Egg Hunt for dogs over weekend

By JAN LARSEN Shaw Media Correspondent SHOREWOOD – This Easter parade featured both bonnets and barks as Shorewood HUGS hosted its sixth Hugs for Hounds Easter Egg Hunt for dogs Saturday at Hammel Woods Dog Park.

The event, a fundraiser for Jullo, a canine assistant at the Forest Preserve District of Will County, was the best and brightest on a balmy day before Easter.

“It was our biggest crowd ever,” Sue Coyle of HUGS said.

Forest Preserve officials put the number at 750 people and 350 dogs. New this year was preregistration by mail or email, and neckerchiefs to signify that each dog had paid before entering the hunt.

“They don’t have anything like this in Morris,” said Melissa McCullough of Morris, whose family brought three dogs to the event, including a Boston terrier named Lily who found a golden egg. The prize was a stuffed pooch who eerily looked like Lily.

Another Lily won the largest dog competition – a Great Dane.

Lily flower is poisonous to cats STAFF REPORT Have cats? Think twice about bringing Easter lilies into your home, according to a news release from the Chicago Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center.

“Lilies are extremely poisonous to cats,” Dr. Jerry Klein, supervising veterinarian at Chicago Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center, said in the news release.

“Ingesting any part of a lily plant can cause serious illness or even lead to death. Because many lilies are so highly-poisonous to cats, prompt veterinary care is required.”

Treatment for ingesting lilies can be difficult for the cat and expensive for its own-

ers, according to the news release. Hospitalization is generally required. Without treatment, the cat will suffer from acute renal failure and die within days.

Many of the most common lilies are the most toxic

to cats: Asiatic, day, Easter, stargazer and tiger lilies.

All parts of lilies are poisonous to cats, including flowers, leaves and pollen. Even drinking water that lilies were stored in can poison cats, the release said.

Harry Vardon, a top English golfer who died in 1937, said, “More matches are lost through carelessness at the beginning than by any other cause.”

More bridge contracts are lost through carelessness early in the play than by any other cause.

So, do not mess up early in today’s deal. South is in four hearts. West leads the spade eight. East wins with his ace and returns the spade four. How should South proceed?

The South hand is definitely worth a one-heart opening. The North hand would have been a perfect game-forcing two-notrump response in the days of yore, but this modern pair was using the Jacoby Forcing Raise, showing four-card or better heart support. Some pairs would respond three no-trump to show a balanced 13-15 without four hearts, but I like this to promise 3-3-3-4 or 3-3-4-3 distribution and a soft, no-trumpy hand.

An impulsive declarer would take the second trick on the board and run the heart jack (the percentage play for only one loser). But West would win with his queen and give his partner a spade ruff. Then the heart ace would defeat the contract.

Harry Vardon, if he had been a bridge player, would have realized that this was the one risk to the contract. And the way to keep the ball in play, not flying out of bounds, is first to cash dummy’s two top diamonds and discard declarer’s remaining spade. Then there is no risk of an opposing spade ruff and South can play on trumps, here losing one spade and two hearts.

Always pause to consider potential dangers.

Aging mom who wants to die may find relief from doctor Dear Abby: My 83-yearold mother has decided she wants to die. She says she’s miserable, but I think she’s causing her own misery.

She has medications to address her physical ailments – none of which are critical.

My siblings live in other states. Mom feels it’s a “burden” for them to travel to see her, and she refuses to travel.

Mom is in assisted living and now is refusing to bathe, trying not to eat, and doesn’t want to talk to anyone or have visitors. She’s obviously depressed, but refuses counseling. If she continues being uncooperative, I’m afraid she’ll have to go to a nursing home where they might let her starve herself to death.

You and your siblings should have your mother evaluated by a geriatrician immediately. It’s apparent she is depressed, but the question is whether she also has something physically wrong with her that is affecting her mental state.

Then let the doctor be your guide.

Dear Abby: I dated my ex for six years, but we broke up recently. The problem is, we signed a lease on our apartment that won’t be up until next year. He still lives here, and I don’t have the heart to kick him out.

Financially, our living together makes sense, and I’d rather live with him than with a stranger.

Exercise is possible even while sitting on a couch or in a car Dear Dr. K: I’m a couch potato. Can I exercise without getting off my couch?

Dear Reader: Every month the evidence grows stronger: The more time you spend sitting, the greater your risk of developing various serious illnesses. Most of our ancestors – going back thousands of years – were a lot more physically active than most of us are today. They had to be: Their survival depended on it.

So I’d love to see you get off that couch, or that desk chair. But if you really can’t find the motivation to do so, try “couchersizing” and “deskersizing.” And remember “couchersizes” also can be done while you’re sitting in your car at stops.

I asked Kailin Collins, a physical therapist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital, for some couch-friendly exercises. Here’s what she shared: You can work several muscle groups while seated on a couch. For example, twist your torso from side to side for the length of a commercial break. That should get your heart rate up and work the muscles in your sides.

ASK DR. K Dr. Anthony Komaroff Or exercise while lying on the couch: With your legs in front of you, squeeze your thigh muscles for a count of 10, then relax and repeat several times. Try leg lifts while on your back to build abs, or side lifts to strengthen hip muscles.

Granted, you might have to explain what you’re doing to the people around you.

Otherwise, they might think you’re having a seizure.

And if you do couchersizes while driving, you might get some strange looks from the person stopped in the lane next to you.

Here are some more exercises you can do during commercial breaks: • Sit To Stand. This exercise works the muscles in your buttocks and the front of your thighs. It helps preserve your ability to get up from a chair or out of a car.

Repeated repetitions can increase your heart rate.

How to do it: Go from sitting to standing to sitting again, 10 times in a row. Rest

for a minute, then repeat.

• Calf Stretch. Keeping your calves flexible can reduce your risk for common foot injuries.

How to do it: Sit on the edge of a couch with your feet flat on the floor. Keeping your heel on the floor, lift and point your toes toward the ceiling. Hold for 30 seconds, then repeat with the other leg, three times per leg.

• Stand On One Leg. Good balance reduces your risk of falling, and balance improves with practice.

How to do it: Holding on to the back of a chair, lift one heel toward your buttocks. Hold for 30 to 45 seconds, three times per leg.

Better yet, walk across the room during commercials, swinging your arms as you go. When I’m working at my desk – as when writing this column – I do this every 10 to 15 minutes. This is after I’ve explained what I’m doing to anyone who sees me and might wonder about my behavior!

However, if the situation can’t be changed, then it’s important you fill your time with activities and opportunities that allow you to meet new people and make new friends.
