Bench trial ends in apartment slaying Will County judge to decide case next week

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Will County judge will decide next week whether a Joliet woman is guilty of first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of her roommate two years ago.

The bench trial of Kadiedra S. Speed, 22, concluded Tuesday with the testimony of Joliet police Kadiedra Detective Carlos Matlock S. Speed and closing arguments.

Speed’s lawyers have not challenged that she killed Sharleatha M. Green with a knife, but told Judge Daniel Rozak she was acting in self-defense while Green swung a baseball bat at her.

Green, 34; her boyfriend, Deondre Brefford; Speed; and her boyfriend, Marcus Molden, were all living in a small basement apartment in the 200 block of North Eastern Avenue in Joliet for about a month

But Assistant Public Defender Jaya Varghese noted the bat only had Speed’s blood and not her fingerprints. “[The witnesses] are consistent in some things. They did see a bat. They did hear Kadiedra say, ‘I’m sorry,’” Varghese said. “Nobody said she was flying in there with a knife ... this is a second-degree murder case.”

But prosecutor Adam Capelli argued against Speed’s claim she had no existing conflict with Green.

“This wasn’t close to mutual combat. It was brutal murder. ... The first thing she says to people she has no problems with when she walks in is, ‘Where’s my [expletive] stuff?’ Well, that escalated quickly, didn’t it?” Capelli said. “She snapped and that was it. She got upset. She got mad and she couldn’t handle herself.”

Joliet disability advocacy group WGCIL sounding alarm on state budget impasse

JOLIET – The Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living is joining forces with other disability advocacy groups in a letter-writing campaign to Gov. Bruce Rauner and state lawmakers, demanding they pass a budget.

The campaign’s theme is “Where’s Our Pumpkin Pie?,” according to an lllinois Network of Centers for Independent Living news release.

“Believe it or not, last year our state legislators passed a law to make the pumpkin pie our state pie,” the release stated.

“That’s nice for those who can afford to eat pie … and the centers certainly cannot.”

Staff who work at the Joliet-based nonprofit are concerned about what happens if the state doesn’t pass an appropriations bill before May 31, the end of the fiscal year.

Speed did not mention Green brandishing a bat when she was questioned later that night, Matlock testified, but she did say there had been a fight.

“The evidence shows they argued the night before the murder, [with] Green being accused of sleeping with Speed’s boyfriend,” Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Derek Ewanic said.

Speed went to work the next morning at Milano Bakery and returned about 12:30 p.m. after Molden told her the locks had been changed and her property was going to be tossed out on the lawn, according to trial testimony. Speed broke a window to get inside her bedroom and walked into the living room, where she stabbed Green once in the lungs and heart. Brefford and three other women who were visiting at the time testified during the trial.

“The baseball bat has the defendant’s blood on the handle ... there’s no DNA from the victim,” Ewanic said.

A lack of state funding is preventing some centers from moving people with disabilities out of nursing homes and into the community, while others have been forced to lay off staff and take furlough days, according to the lllinois Network of Centers for Independent Living news release.

Illinois is in its 10th month without a budget. But there’s a new sense of urgency as this fiscal year wears on toward the next.

If the impasse continues beyond May 31, Boshears said the WGCIL may have to take more drastic measures, including more furlough days and reductions in hours.

“The fear is, how long can you sustain a sense of urgency until it becomes the new normal?” Boshears said.

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Judy Mitchell was formally approved Tuesday as Joliet Junior College interim president by the Board of Trustees after the resignation of former President Debra Daniels in March.

The vote was not unanimous at Tuesday’s meeting. Board Vice Chairman Andrew Mihelich asked about the terms and conditions of Mitchell’s appointment as interim, something he said should have been solidified.

“I just believe we should have discussed this before we voted,” he said.

Trustees Maureen Broderick and Michael O’Connell were in favor of Mitchell’s appointment. Broderick said it would be beneath the trustees to not appoint someone as experienced as Mitchell. O’Connell wanted Mitchell to have a chance to “get comfortable.”

Mihelich and Trustee Alicia Morales were the only two to vote against Mitchell’s appointment. Mitchell, the school’s former administrative services vice president, has served as acting president since trustees received a resignation notice from Daniels on March 18.

Faculty Union President Robert Marcink said in his report at the meeting that faculty members are comfortable with Mitchell and have worked with Mitchell for a long time.

Train station faces another roadblock

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The future downtown train station is in jeopardy again with the state cutting off funds needed to finish the project.

Joliet could be on the hook for $660,000 the state is no longer willing to pay because of its budget problems, Deputy City Manager Steve Jones told the Joliet City Council on Tuesday.

The latest development marks the second time in less than a year that state actions have stymied the project, which was initially made possible by a $30 million state grant.

This time the state has notified the city that it no longer is able to pay the construction management contractor overseeing the project “because of the state’s budget issues,” Jones told the

Board Chairman Robert Wunderlich said there will be a presidential search and that criteria and a list of consultants for the search would be put together. Unlike the presidential search in 2011, he said, the college will not use the Association of Community College Trustees, as they were too expensive and JJC did most of the work.

Mihelich said at Tuesday’s meeting that he was advised Mitchell was not interested in applying to become JJC president, but Wunderlich said Mitchell wanted to leave the option open, which she affirmed.

ACCT assisted JJC in September 2011 for $30,000 – plus travel expenses – as the college searched for a new leader after the death of Gena Proulx.

The search ended that December and Daniels was chosen to be president.

At the time, former board Chairman Jeff May said the timeline for the 2011 search was too tight and the search committee needed more community members.

Daniels abruptly resigned in March, stating in an email that she had brought the college “as far as I can and I want to step aside so I can do other things.” She also stated the board has been tumultuous with the

council.

The estimate is that the construction manager will be due $660,000 through the completion of the project, Jones said.

“This doesn’t surprise me,” Councilman Jim McFarland said, noting the project has faced a number of issues “and there’s always a price tag attached.”

But the city is facing another problem as the project hits more snags, he said.

“We have no train station,” McFarland said. “I don’t know how much longer we can delay this project.”

The city closed Union Station in September 2014 as it moved boarding platforms in anticipation of the future train station being built on the other side of the railroad tracks. Commuters since have used outdoor shelters and resignation of three trustees and she hopes “this will allow them to come together for the college.”

Trustees approved Daniels’ resignation and settlement at a March 29 meeting. The settlement, which will pay Daniels $196,270 for a year, acknowledged disputed claims between Daniels and the college. Daniels will also receive health insurance benefits for a year under the settlement.

Daniels and the board agreed to keep the terms and content of the settlement confidential.

Wunderlich indicated when Daniels resigned that a climate survey of JJC had a “little bit to do with” Daniels’ resignation but that she had her own personal reasons for leaving.

The climate survey was conducted by law firm Rathbun, Cservenyak & Kozol and interviewed 25 JJC administrators on a range of topics, including personnel matters, Wunderlich has said.

Board trustees approved Rathbun, Cservenyak & Kozol to provide general legal services for the college after dismissing the college’s previous attorneys, Robbin Schwartz. Wunderlich has said the trustees were not happy with the law firm’s performance.

temporary ticket facilities. Some, McFarland said, are leaving Joliet to pick up the train at other towns.

Jones said the city appears to have three options: • convince state officials that they should continue to pay the construction manager; • pay the construction manager with city funds; • or work out an intergovernmental agreement with the state in which Joliet will pay now and be reimbursed later when the state has a budget in place.

The last option would be contingent on the state’s willingness to enter an intergovernmental agreement.

Jones said he believes the state will have an answer by the next City Council meeting on May 2.

The City Council on March 1 ap-

proved a $16 million contract with Walsh Construction to build the train station.

The state delayed the award of the contract for several months because not enough money was left in the project funds to build a Pace bus station that was in the original plan.

Eventually, Joliet persuaded state officials to allow the train station to be built now and the bus station to be built later when funds might become available.

Also on Tuesday, the council approved a $150,000 consultant contract with TranSystems for engineering work in preparation for the eventual reconnection of the south end of Chicago Street with the stretch that runs through downtown.

Agencies challenge 911 Rewarding Careers dispatch center offer In High Demand

BOLINGBROOK – Municipal and fire protection district agencies that fall under Will County’s largest and busiest 911 dispatch center are challenging the county’s recent offer to cover costs for a new regional facility when WESCOM still is paying off debt associated with 2013 consolidation efforts.

Community leaders – including Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar – argue it’s “not fair or equitable” to residents served by WESCOM who continue to be on the hook for about $5.1 million in bond debt, whereas agencies serving southern and eastern Will County get “a free ride.”

County leaders offered last month to pay for a new regional facility. Doing so would help the countywide 911 board pare down the county’s six dispatch centers, as mandated by the state. Dispatch centers in Romeoville, Crete and Frankfort would likely be folded into the new sheriff’s location.

Now some agencies under WESCOM are considering opposition resolutions in the coming weeks, asking Will County to find an equitable solution to reconcile the debt services – in other words, to write a check to pay off the remaining debt.

Claar accused the county of “double taxing” residents. Nearly half of Will County residents are serviced by WESCOM’s 911 center and pay into the debt service, and now they are going to pay taxes on the Laraway Road facility, he said.

But Nick Palmer, chief of staff for County Executive Larry Walsh Sr., said that’s not the case.

“Here’s where the county has a real problem. The county is trying to com-

ply with [state mandates], without state funding, and we have a way to do it,” Palmer said.

He said instead of bonding out for the project and raising taxes, the county is using shored-up Regional Transportation Authority sales tax dollars. Doing that alone saves taxpayers at least $10 million in bond interest, he said.

“The county has no intention of backing away from this proposal,” Palmer said, noting it’s hardly a free ride for participating agencies. Any agency that comes under the sheriff’s facility will still have to pay for staffing, operational costs and rent, he said.

The county may spend about $5 million in construction on the 911 dispatch center and its administrative offices, while about $20 million to $25 million could be spent on the sheriff’s and other agencies’ portions of the building.

The village of Channahon – which issued $5 million in bonds in 2013 to fund the WESCOM building – and the Lockport Fire Protection District are also considering opposition resolutions.

Channahon Village Board members at a Monday night meeting said they are waiting for the full WESCOM board to adopt its own resolution at its upcoming May 19 meeting.

The Lockport fire district board will consider the resolution at its April 27 meeting, Fire Chief David Skoryi said.

Palmer said the county offered the regional facility alternative to avoid a “big fight” as centers consolidate.

“No good deed goes unpunished,” Palmer said. “The sad part is we’re trying to do the right thing, and now we have people second-guessing us.”

JOLIET – Garland Mays this week added his voice to a chorus of people who have been calling for more diversity in the shows at the Rialto Square Theatre.

Mays told the City Council on Monday that both Rialto management and downtown event planners need to appeal to a broader audience.

“The Rialto and downtown has to be more diverse,” said Mays, who is president of the Forest Park Neighborhood Council. “Although we’ve had some very nice events down there, I don’t think it’s catered to everybody in Joliet. I don’t think it’s catered to the African-American population. I don’t think it’s catered to the Latino population.”

While Mays’ comments included downtown event planning, his remarks about the Rialto echoed a refrain heard from a number of people, including a City Council member, at recent council meetings where theater operations have been under review.

The Rialto is going through a management change – if not an upheaval – amid financial problems and other issues that have plagued the theater for more than a year. Former General

liet resident and Grammy nominee who was interested in performing at the Rialto that the artist could not get a call back from the theater. Ericksen talked to her after that meeting, Gavin said.

“Jack was very interested in getting the contact information,” Gavin said.

“He was receptive.”

Gavin is black, as is the gospel singer she mentioned – Ann Nesby, a former lead singer for Sounds of Blackness who was nominated for a Grammy award in 2008.

Minorities have not been the only ones calling for a bigger variety of shows at the Rialto.

Tyler Kelly, a Rialto stagehand who formed a committee aimed at motivating more youth involvement in the theater, said he was basically “laughed at” when he presented ideas at a meeting that included Green.

“It was met with nothing but apathy,” Kelly told the City Council at a special meeting March 28 on the Rialto.

Mays said after the meeting Monday that he believes the success of the Rialto and the downtown area depends on appealing to more segments of the city.

“In order for downtown Joliet to be successful, it has to bring in more cultures,” he said. “The Rialto has not done that.”

CHANNAHON – Channahon trustees unanimously approved the village’s 2016-17 budget Monday, allocating $30 million for expected revenues and $30 million for expenses.

Finance Director Heather Wagonblott said the budget is conservative and village finances remain in a “stable financial position.”

Revenues in the general fund are planned at $12.9 million, with expenses at $13 million; capital improvement revenues are $5.89 million, with expenses of $5.88 million; and capital infrastructure revenues are $1.02 million, with expenses of $1.52 million.

With revenues from Channahon’s profitable rebate fund gone, the village expects to receive $10,000 from interest income in the fund, while drawing out $1.14 million from the fund’s reserves.

“We are drawing down from the reserves,” Wagonblott said at a previous board meeting, “to keep the village going at its current level. ... We’re definitely going to be pushing hard for new revenue sources.”

The village will issue $2.4 million in bonds to design an expansion of the

wastewater treatment plant. The village will also issue bonds this year for infrastructure work on the Bluff Road and Interstate 55 corridor.

The budget also includes expense increases in health insurance premiums, payroll and building repair and maintenance.

The board also approved raising fees for water cross-connection inspections, with Trustees Sam Greco and Mark Scaggs voting against the measure, saying after the meeting that the increases were excessive.

Several older homes in the village use private well water, which connects to the public water supply. The village contracts plumbing inspections of these pipes each year to make sure there is proper backflow prevention in place – a service for which the village pays $62.50 per residence plus in-house costs, but for which it charges residents only $35.

The proposal approved Monday will increase the annual fee residents pay from $35 to $100. The cost of any additional inspections needed will also rise, from $20 to $65.

ELWOOD – The Children’s Garden will be the setting for a special celebration and a recognition of bees, butterflies and other important pollinators.

A maintenance day and pollinator program is set for 12:50 to 1:35 p.m.

April 27 at the garden in Elwood. The event is one of 15 this year celebrating Trees Forever’s 15 years in Illinois.

Students planted 58 trees native to Illinois in 2014 in the Children’s Garden, with help from Trees Forever and other project partners. The maintenance day will include a discussion about the importance of trees to pollinators.

Trial underway in attempted abduction

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Bolingbrook man is facing a bench trial for allegedly trying to lure a girl into his vehicle four years ago.

George D. Smith, 69, is accused of attempted child abduction in connection with the Feb. 17, 2012, incident, according to Will County Jail records.

A then-11-year-old girl was walking home from school in the 100 block of Lexington Drive in Bolingbrook when Smith allegedly drove by and tried to get her inside a blue pickup truck. The girl refused and ran from the scene. Smith was identified and taken into custody that afternoon at a Bolingbrook bar.

The girl, who is now 16, testified Tuesday that she ran to a nearby house because she “was scared” after the encounter with Smith.

“Did he say he wanted to kiss you

or anything like that?” defense attorney David Shiffer asked. “Weren’t you carrying a [bulky] duffel bag?”

The girl also was asked about a picture she drew of the man in the pickup truck that day. She showed the drawing to a police officer before Smith was arrested, according to testimony.

The drawing remained in her sketchbook for several months until being collected for evidence. Shiffer noted the image had changed, yet the girl told prosecutor Katie Rabenda she’d colored in the drawing to finish it, but not altered what it depicted.

The trial will continue Wednesday.

Joliet eyes new powers to close businesses that threaten community welfare

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city is considering giving the mayor new powers to temporarily shut down certain businesses if it is determined they “threaten the welfare of the community.”

The proposed amendment to Joliet licensing ordinances would apply to food stores and other businesses licensed by the city, allowing them to be shut down for up to seven days.

City officials said the change in the ordinance is aimed at addressing situations where criminal activity, particularly drug dealing, takes place at businesses licensed by the city.

The Joliet City Council Land Use and Legislative Committee is set to consider the ordinance amendment when it meets at 5 p.m. Wednesday in City Hall.

City Attorney Marty Shanahan said the amendment would allow the mayor to deal with businesses where drug dealing or other criminal activity takes place. He said the powers are comparable to the mayor’s power as liquor commissioner.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk referred any questions about the proposal to Shanahan, saying he did not propose it.

According to the proposed ordinance amendment, the mayor would be able to shut down a licensed business for up to seven days by issuing a written order stating the reason if he “has reason to believe that the continued operation of a particular licensed premise will immediately threaten the welfare of the community.”

Councilman Jim McFarland, a member of the Land Use and Legislative Committee, said the city may need to better define what constitutes a threat to the welfare of the community. But McFarland said something needs to be done regarding businesses where illegal activity takes place.

“We definitely need to get something in our code of ordinances, because we have instances where there is drug activity in a business, and the person who is doing so gets arrested but the business continues to operate,” McFarland said.

What kind of lawyer do I need?

A. The short answer is: An Experienced Lawyer! But, what does that really mean? It means a lawyer who has handled not only many intersection collision cases, but one who is versed in product liability law as well.

The scenario above, if true, means that not only may the driver be a potential defendant, but also the brake installation company.

Assuming the brakes were improperly installed, that company may actually be the most “at fault” defendant. Additionally, a potential defendant may be the brake manufacturer. If the brakes were, in fact, installed correctly, but failed to function properly, then this might be a product defect and the manufacturer might be at fault. In certain circumstances, there may be other potential defendants as well; for example, if the brakes were altered between the time of manufacture SM-CL0366749

and the time of distribution or if they were altered when installed, other parties may potentially be at fault. Or, of course, there might not be anything wrong with the brakes at all and it was simply driver’s error.

With respect to the fact that this was also a collision where the other driver was at fault, personal injury laws would apply, which means the other driver could be sued for some of the same things, such as the medical bills, 100% of your lost time, and a settlement which would include pain and suffering, something that is not compensated for in workers’compensation cases. Unlike workers’compensation cases, however, the automobile insurance company will only pay one lump sum at the end which will settle and conclude the entire case, or they will pay pursuant to a judge or jury verdict which, again, would be the onetime payment after the period in which the medical treatment is completed, so payment would not be quick.

Under Illinois law a claimant cannot collect twice for the same injury. So what happens is the workers’ compensation carrier has a lien on the proceeds of the personal injury case.

In other words, if the workers’ compensation case has paid out $100.00 and the personal injury carrier has to pay $200.00 in a settlement or award, then workers’compensation gets its $100.00 back, less something for your attorney’s fees and costs, and you would just get an additional $100.00 from the personal injury case. If the amount of the personal injury case does not exceed the amounts paid in the workers’ compensation case, the lien would actually eat up all the money and the claimant would only actually collect on the workers’ compensation claim.

Frankfort celebrates Earth Day, Arbor Day The HERALD–NEWS FRANKFORT – Sunny weather Saturday welcomed close to 300 volunteers to the village of Frankfort’s annual Earth Day and Arbor Day celebration luncheon and cleanup.

Local organizations and residents helped collect debris and plant flowers throughout the community.

Mayor Jim Holland welcomed the volunteers to the luncheon at the utilities and public works facility. Village Trustees Mike Stevens and Keith Ogle and Clerk Adam Borrelli also participated in the cleanup.

“Over the years, the community response and participation in this event has been very strong and positive. The active participation today for all our volunteers demonstrates their pride in our community,” Holland said in a village news release. “This year, once again, the National Arbor Day Foundation honored the Village of Frankfort with an award as a Tree City USA. Thanks to all our volunteers for their continued help with our cleanup activities on Earth Day.” The luncheon was made possible by donations from Jewel, Aurelio’s Pizza, Durbin’s Pizza and Palermo’s Pizza. JOLIET – An exhibition of paintings, sketches, woven items, and other crafts gives visitors a chance to experience the creative side of artists with disabilities. Robert William Clyde, born Feb. 24, 1926, passed away April 14, 2016.

Bob is survived by his wife, Sharyne Clyde (nee Purler); his children, Mark (Donna), Cheryl, John (Connie) Carrie, Amy and Scott (Alice); 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Bill; sister, Carol (Jim) Bauman; and sisters-in-law, Cheryl and Darlene.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Carrie Clyde; one sister, Shirley; and three brothers, Don, Oliver and Earl Clyde.

Bob was an Army veteran of World War II. He retired from Columbia Pipe and Supply in 1991. He was a longtime member of New Lenox Sportsmen’s Club, an avid fisherman and enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles, watching NASCAR and the NFL, and time spent with his family.

Born Feb. 23, 1927, in Boston, MA, she was the daughter of Francisco and Angelina Pesce. “Yola” will be most remembered for her unconditional love and devotion to her husband, John, her family, and her many friends.

Doris H. Hawryluk, age 85, of Peotone, passed away on Friday, April 15, 2016, at Beecher Manor Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.

She married the late Wesley R. Hawryluk on March 5, 1949, in Manhattan. He passed away on Sept. 6, 1990. She was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, the church’s Council of Catholic Women, and the Peotone American Legion Auxiliary.

Doris Roberts 21 dies at 90

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Everybody loved Doris Roberts.

The spunky actress who played the tart-tongued, endlessly meddling mother on CBS’ “Everybody Loves Raymond” received an outpouring of praise on Monday following news of her death.

Phil Rosenthal, the sitcom’s creator, called her “a wonderful, funny, indelible actress and friend” on Twitter.

CBS said in a statement that Roberts “will be remembered for lighting up every room she walked into with an unparalleled combination of energy, humor, warmth and even a little bit of grit.”

Roberts died overnight in her sleep, spokeswoman Janet Daily said. She was told of the death by Roberts’ son, Michael Cannata.

Roberts was 90.

The cause of death was not immediately known. Roberts had been healthy and active, Daily said.

Last month, Roberts appeared at an actors’ union event that focused on the scarcity of female directors in entertainment. The outspoken critic of age discrimination asked the panel why there were so few roles for elder actors.

Roberts won four Emmy Awards for her portrayal of Marie Barone on CBS’ “Everybody Loves Raymond,” receiving a total of seven nominations as best supporting actress for the sitcom.

The 1996-2005 sitcom about an affectionate but bickering extended family also starred Ray Romano, Brad Garrett and Patricia Heaton. Peter Boyle, who played husband Frank Barone opposite Roberts, died in 2006.

“She was funny and tough and loved life, living it to the fullest,” Heaton tweeted. She recalled Roberts as a “consummate professional.”

Comedian Denis Leary tweeted that Roberts “made me laugh so hard so many times.”

Roberts also was known for her role in the 1980s TV detective series “Remington Steele.” She appeared on stage and in a variety of movies, including “The Rose,” “The Taking of Pelham One Two Three” and “Madea’s Witness Protection.”

But it was the hugely successful “Everybody Loves Raymond” that “put my career over the top,” Roberts told The Associated Press as the show wrapped its run.

Coal tax pitched as good for state coffers

BENLD – It’s been more than 60 years since the last coal mine closed in the south-central Illinois town of Benld, but its legacy is found in the name of its high school teams – the Miners – and its economic development promoting arm, the Coal County Chamber of Commerce.

The long-dormant mines also rear their heads at random intervals, causing cave-ins that have damaged dozens of homes and led to the demolition of a nearly new elementary school in 2009.

The budget to repair city services after cave-ins, such as a municipal water line that burst when the sinking ground damaged foundations at 15 homes one year ago, in this 1,500-person town is slim.

So, when an environmental group came to town to pitch a severance tax on coal mined in Illinois that could potentially raise hundreds of millions of dollars annually for the cash-strapped state (and funnel some to Benld), Mayor Gloria Sidar and colleagues were eager to listen.

SPRINGFIELD – Three anti-violence programs administered by former Gov. Pat Quinn were so poorly monitored that nearly $4 million was lost to questionable expenses or unspent funds never collected, an audit released Tuesday concluded.

The review by Auditor General Frank Mautino included the controversial Neighborhood Recovery Initiative, created by the Democratic governor in 2010 as he was running for election to a full term.

Criticism of spending and oversight in news reports and an earlier audit haunted his failed re-election attempt in 2014.

House committee approves progressive income tax plan

SPRINGFIELD – A measure to tax the wealthiest people in Illinois at higher rates is heading to the state House floor for consideration.

The plan by Democratic state Rep. Lou Lang of Skokie was approved Tuesday in the House Revenue Committee.

The current income tax rate is 3.75 percent. Under the measure most residents would see a slight decrease in what they pay.

U of Illinois nontenured faculty begin 2-day strike

CHAMPAIGN – The union that represents nontenured faculty at the University of Illinois started a two-day strike Tuesday in its quest for a contract, but top school administrators said the walkout is not the right approach.

Members of the Nontenure-Track Faculty Coalition Local 6546 expressed hope their strike would help speed up contract negotiations that have dragged on since October 2014, shortly after the state first recognized the union as a bargaining unit. The contract would be the group’s first with the university.

The money would be funneled evenly to three sources: the state’s general revenue fund; a permanent mineral trust fund to pay for future public services beyond the shelf life of mines – beneficial for places such as Benld; and coal-producing communities.

FBI addiction documentary to be screened at school

CHICAGO – A documentary about drug addiction made for schools by the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration is being screened in suburban Chicago.

FBI Director James Comey said in a news release the film “may be difficult to watch,” but it’s meant to educate students about the consequences of drug abuse.

The 45-minute documentary is titled “Chasing the Dragon: The Life of an Opiate Addict.” It will be shown Wednesday at Westmont High School.

The documentary includes interviews with people affected by addiction to prescription drugs and heroin. It also includes interviews with medical professionals and people in law enforcement.

NEW YORK – Front-runners Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton swept to resounding victories in Tuesday’s New York primary, with Trump bouncing back from a difficult stretch in his Republican campaign and Clinton pushing tantalizingly close to locking up the Democratic nomination.

“The race for the nomination is in the home stretch, and victory is in sight,” Clinton declared to cheering supporters.

Trump captured more than 50 percent of the vote in New York and was headed toward a big delegate haul in his home state, a commanding showing that keeps him on a path to the GOP nomination if he continues to win. He claimed at least half of the 95 delegates at stake Tuesday, and was likely to add to his tally in individual congressional districts.

A confident Trump insisted it was impossible for his rivals to catch him.

“We don’t have much of a race anymore,” he said during a victory rally in the lobby of the Manhattan tower bearing his name. He peppered his brash remarks with more references to the economy and other policy proposals than normal, reflecting the influence of a new team of advisers seeking to professionalize his campaign.

Clinton’s triumph padded her delegate lead over rival Bernie Sanders and strengthened her claim to the Democratic nomination that

eluded her eight years ago. In a shift toward the general election, she made a direct appeal to Sanders’ loyal supporters, telling them she believes “there is more that unites us than divides us.”

Exit polls suggested Democrats were ready to rally around whomever the party nominates.

Nearly 7 in 10 Sanders supporters in New York said that they would definitely or probably vote for Clinton if she is the party’s pick.

Sanders energized young people and liberals in New York, as he has across the country, but it wasn’t enough to pull off the upset victory he desperately needed to change the trajectory of the Democratic race. Still, the Vermont senator vowed to keep competing.

“We’ve got a shot to victory,” Sanders said in an interview with The Associated Press.

“We have come a very long way in the last 11 months, and we are going to fight this out until the end of the process.”

Of the 247 Democratic delegates at stake in New York, Clinton picked up at least 104 while Sanders gained at least 85. Many remained to be allocated, pending final vote tallies The fight for New York’s delegate haul consumed the presidential contenders for two weeks, an eternity in the fast-moving White House race. Candidates blanketed every corner of New York, bidding for votes from Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs to the working-class cities and rural enclaves that dot the rest of the state.

Sending more US troops to Iraq fits a 2-year pattern

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama’s decision to send still more American troops to Iraq, and to put military advisers closer to the front lines against the Islamic State, fits a pattern of ever-deepening involvement in a country whose war Obama exited with supposed finality in December 2011.

From the initial contingent of 170 U.S. soldiers who entered Baghdad as advisers in June 2014, after the Islamic State overran much of northern and western Iraq and seemed poised to threaten Baghdad, the troop total jumped to 1,550 six months later. It topped 3,000 in April 2015 and then edged higher. The latest increase announced Monday by Defense Secretary Ash Carter pushes the authorized total above 4,000. More increases seem likely.

What the Pentagon calls “tightening the noose” on the militants, critics call indecisive steps with limited chance to succeed.

One of the most vocal critics of Obama’s Iraq policy, Republican Sen. John McCain, dismissed Carter’s announcement that the U.S. would send 217 more troops to Iraq in support of the Iraqi security forces’ preparation for an

“Grudging incrementalism,” McCain called it.

Patrick Martin, an Iraq specialist at the Institute for the Study of War, is

skeptical that the U.S. approach is sufficiently aggressive.

“The addition of 217 advisers ... is not going to be nearly enough to actually make a significant difference on the ground in the near future,” he said

in an interview. On the other hand, the U.S. offer to fly Apache attack helicopters in support of an Iraqi advance toward Mosul is a significant move, Martin said, noting that it would be the first time the Iraqis have accepted that kind of support since U.S. forces returned to Iraq in 2014.

Obama’s approach in Iraq has been tempered not just by his pledge to end U.S. military involvement there after he took office in 2009, but also by the Iraqis’ own political failings, which even now cast doubt on the durability of any battlefield victories U.S. troops can help the Iraqis achieve. In 2007, at the peak of the Iraq war, the U.S. had about 170,000 troops there.

Rather than commit large ground combat units to Iraq or Syria, Obama in 2014 opted for providing a support role on the ground, backed by bombing from the air. Obama was on his way Tuesday to Saudi Arabia to encourage Gulf Arab countries to contribute more to the battle in Iraq.

Nearly two years later, the Islamic State has been weakened and squeezed but remains a credible threat. It not only holds territory in Iraq and Syria but also has spread to Libya and Afghanistan while launching deadly attacks in Paris and Brussels.

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois lawmakers may find themselves waiting months to get paid – just like many firms that do business with the state.

Illinois has been functioning without a budget for 10 months.

Despite this, the courts have put the state on autopilot, authorizing spending the Legislature has failed to act upon.

The state has a $7.8 billion bill backlog, and it’s continuing to dig itself billions of dollars further into the hole.

Just about everyone who does business with the state can expect to wait at least two months to get paid. For many businesses, it’s much longer.

Nursing homes teeter on the brink of bankruptcy, pharmacies are shutting down, gas stations are turning state police cars away as the state struggles to pay what it owes.

But one privileged group has largely avoided the pain: lawmakers and the state’s six constitutional officers.

Long before the state’s current budget crisis, lawmakers enacted a law that allows them to get paid even if the state doesn’t have a budget in place.

So legislators are sitting pretty – atop the manure pile that is Illinois government.

Typically, lawmakers earn about $80,000 a year for their part-time jobs.

Some could earn more in the private sector. There are some impressive résumés in the Legislature.

But there are a fair number who lack even the rudimentary leadership skills necessary to be an assistant manager at a fast-food restaurant.

I know that sounds harsh. But that is what I have observed during my 17 years covering the Illinois General Assembly.

Along with the bright lights, there are some pretty dim bulbs on the legislative marquee.

They became lawmakers in the least democratic way possible – they were picked by party bosses. And they have hung onto their jobs because our legislative districts are drawn in such a way that voters often have had little choice but to keep them. And they know the only way they can imperil their jobs is if they displease their party boss.

So they kowtow.

So there is a part of me that likes the idea of seeing some of these folks waiting

Illinois needs solutions, not more gimmicks REEDER REPORT Scott Reeder to get paid – just like every firm that does business with the state.

And here’s how Comptroller Leslie Munger explained it over the weekend when she announced her decision to make lawmakers wait to get paid: “Our social service network is being dismantled, mass layoffs are occurring and small businesses across Illinois are awaiting payments for services they’ve already provided. As our cash crunch grows in the coming months, it is only appropriate that the unfair prioritization of payments to elected leaders ends.

We are all in this together, we all will wait in line.”

But, gee, Leslie, if it is such a good idea, why didn’t you start doing it 10 months ago?

The reason is pretty simple; this is a political move not a fiscal one.

The amount lawmakers would be paid out of that multibillion-dollar backlog of bills is picayune.

Munger, who faces Chicago City Clerk Susana Mendoza in November, is posturing with a bit of populist rhetoric.

One could ask, why stop at state lawmakers? Why not make all state workers wait to get paid? Their collective salaries, in fact, do have a significant impact on the state finances.

But you’ll never hear Munger or any other politician endorse such a plan because it would not only be illegal to force rank-and-file workers to wait to be paid, but it would also be unpopular.

And no politician wants to bear the brand of unpopularity.

While Munger’s proposal to make politicians queue up for their pay seems almost poetic in its justice, it’s just a ploy.

And our state needs solutions – not more gimmicks.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Sanders would work to combat greed in the world

To the Editor: Millions of people from North Africa, the Middle East, and Central America are on the march. They are fleeing war, hunger, dysfunctional governments, lack of water, and climate change disasters. Refugees are looked upon as a problem rather than as victims who need to be protected.

The above misery is the result of a world dominated by an irrational system that sanctifies greed as a positive and acceptable good.

This is a dehumanizing credo that negates the principles of the dignity and worth of all humankind. It is reflected here in the U.S. by Paul Ryan’s Republican budget, which calls for cutting Social Security and privatizing Medicare while advocating tax breaks for the wealthy and multinational corporations.

The Panama Papers (11.5 million documents) give evidence of a global system of greed and corruption. The papers revealed that a law

firm in Panama specialized in hiding the assets of the world’s elites. This is a widespread practice by banks and other financial services. In 2009 the IRS filed a lawsuit alleging that 52,000 Americans held $14.8 billion in accounts at a Swiss bank (UBS) in order to avoid paying income taxes.

It is estimated that $7.6 trillion is hidden in offshore accounts.

This world of misery will not tolerate this other world of greed in which global elites control extreme wealth and power. Bernie Sanders is the only presidential candidate that grasps the dilemma of the shameful wealth of the few and the immiseration of the many. He has called for a transformation of the world’s political-economy and for a redistribution of the world’s wealth in a more equitable manner. His voice of reason is in stark contrast to the voices of the other candidates who refuse to engage reality and instead espouse ideological fantasies.

But the Steelwomen entered the SouthWest Suburban Conference Blue contest on a positive note after a win over Bolingbrook and a close loss against Sandburg.

While the game figured to be a good battle between the rivals, the visiting Tigers scored five runs in their first at-bat and went on to capture a 16-2 victory in five innings.

Sidney Budzinski tossed a four-hitter to pick up the win and also joined

Kristen Ames, Madi Mulder and DeShonte Smith with three hits apiece as West (6-7, 1-2) had nine players with hits and eight individuals who drove in runs on a day where it played errorless ball.

“Today went really well,” Budzinski said. “We were hitting a lot better than we have been the last few games.

We’ve been talking about that and trying to keep our hands low and keeping it through the ball. Our fielding was good and it was nice knowing that I had my defense behind me making plays. We’re a young team with only three seniors, so we’ve been talking about how this is a process and how we want to keep getting better and better,

and we have.”

In the first, Ames (3 for 3) started things with a bunt single before Ariana Liceaga reached on an error that scored the initial run.

After Smith (3 for 4) singled and Kiley Robb reached on an error, Budzinski (3 for 4) drove in two with a shot off the wall below the Rock Island tracks.

Another run came home on an error before Mulder (3 for 4) singled to make it a 5-0 game.

“Central’s our biggest rival, so we definitely came out positive,” Mulder said. “We had a vibe going in the dugout and everyone was having fun and it all just came together. The biggest thing between this game and last week’s was

our positive vibe. Everybody was up and having fun on the field and in the dugout and that’s what made the difference. We have a very good bond, and if we keep staying positive, I think our performances will prove that.”

Coach Heather Suca’s Tigers scored four more runs in the third inning after Budzinski led off with a double and Mulder and Sarah Gersch followed with infield hits to load the bases.

Karlee Barton (2 for 3) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Jelizza Pecheco followed with a two-run triple to center and Ames hit a sacrifice fly to give her team a 9-0 cushion.

Jones relieved and struck out Jay Muscolino to end the inning, keeping the Hilltoppers (6-7, 2-2) within 1-0.

Senior right-hander Carson Bartels, who quarterbacked Nazareth (12-2, 3-1) to a Class 5A quarterfinal victory over JCA in the fall, went the distance, allowing three hits. The first came in the third when Justin Conant walked, Aidan Tyrell sacrificed and KC Simonich singled up the middle to tie it, 1-1.

The walk to Conant was the fifth Bartels issued in the first 10 hitters he faced. After that, he walked only one and he finished with eight strikeouts.

Fellows and Jack Naal had back-toback singles to put the potential tying runs on base with two outs in the sixth, but a strikeout ended the mild threat.

“He was a little inconsistent, and when you face a pitcher like that, it’s tough for a hitter to get into a routine at the plate,” Voss said of Bartels. “But you could see in the seventh inning, he just said it’s time to shut it down.”

Jones worked a solid 41/3 innings of relief, walking only one, and Jack Howard retired the side in order in the seventh.

They got whatever help they needed from the Hilltoppers’ defense.

“That was 14 innings against these guys with Saldana’s overthrow at first on the pickoff the only error,” Voss said. “That’s an encouraging recipe for down the road.”

Shortstop Jack Surin made a sliding catch of a popup in short center field with his back to the infield, and second baseman Conant made a couple of difficult catches on popups in short center field grabbing a shot on a tough hop and throwing out the hitter. Catcher Dan Devine gunned down Love at third in the third inning when he attempted to advance after Devine blocked a low pitch.

Tyrell, a sophomore, started in center field in his second varsity game.

The left-hander handles the bat well and could be an effective No. 2 hitter to bat behind leadoff man Conant, also a sophomore.

“We played loose and we do that, we play better,” Ames said. “This is a process, and beating Central is a game that we want to include in that process, since it’s our Joliet rival. Central is making its mark this year, so it was nice to come out and show them something. Hitting is contagious, so once one person starts it, everybody else wants to do it. We have each other’s backs.

We talk so much and have a lot of confidence in each other to get the job done.”

Budzinski allowed just an infield hit to Hannah Gawenda in the first three innings but Central (1-2) finally scored in the fourth. Ashley Hare opened with an infield hit before being forced. After the righthander recorded her lone strikeout, Shelby Fischer delivered a twoout RBI single and Christina Valentino followed with a run-scoring single.

West collected eight of its 18 hits in its final trip to the plate. Tayler Davis drove in two runs while

Smith, Savanah DelRose, Mulder and Barton also added RBI in the fifth inning.

Although disappointed with the bad start against their rivals, Central coach Erin Douglas was upbeat about many of the things that she’s seeing from her squad so far this season.

“We came out with too many nerves in the first inning and we didn’t mentally push through like we have in the past and weren’t able to fight our way back,” Douglas said.

“But those are things that we’re just going to have to continue to work on in practice and in games.

How can we stop things before they get out of control?

“Our girls have a ton of potential and I think we can do some things that we haven’t done in the past. It’s just going to be a matter of stringing everything together at one time, like getting hits, playing defense and being a little bit more mentally tough.

It’s something that we’re going to continue to work on every day, and I know that the girls are up for the challenge.”

JOLIET – Anyone involved in Joliet Catholic athletics has seen enough of lightning-quick Julian Love.

The Nazareth senior, who will play football at Notre Dame, contributes to the Roadrunners’ baseball team largely as the courtesy runner for catcher Shane Gipson.

JCA coach Jared Voss had a plan for Tuesday’s game at Gillespie Field, the conclusion of the the East Suburban Catholic series on back-to-back days. He employed ace pitcher and first baseman Drake Fellows in left field. Before the game, he mentioned the strategy.

“If Love is on third sometime in this game, I want to see him try to score on a fly ball to left and watch Drake gun him down,” Voss said with a smile.

The scenario presented itself, but because of Nazareth’s execution, it never came to fruition. The Roadrunners, who had won Monday’s game at LaGrange Park, 9-4, scored twice in

the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and grabbed a 3-1 victory.

Gipson opened the sixth with a single off senior right-hander Jared Jones, who pitched in relief. Love ran for him and Brandon Bossard also singled. Rich Kiernicki’s sacrifice moved the runners to third and second, and the table was set for Fellows’ arm vs.

Love’s speed.

However, Kyle Kane spoiled things as he dropped down a perfect squeeze bunt to score Love. Will McKenna then scored an insurance run with a double to the left-field corner.

“They executed. They’re a veteran team,” Voss said of Nazareth. “it seems like some of those guys have been around for six years, and it showed the last two days.

“This was a good learning experience for our young team. There’s still a big gap we have to close the next six weeks.”

Junior left-hander Antonio Saldana started for JCA and threw a perfect first inning. But he lost his control in the second and did not get out of the

Some area baseball teams face long trips VIEWS Dick Goss The schedule will not be the best, but then again, nobody asked for our preference.

The IHSA last week released assignments for baseball regionals and sectionals. What jumped off the page was two-time defending state champion Providence Catholic hosting a Class 4A sectional of 20 teams, yet neighbors such as Joliet West, Joliet Central, Plainfield South and Minooka are not among them.

Instead, the Tigers, Steelmen, Cougars and Indians are in the Bloomington Sectional, which will be played at Illinois Wesleyan University. This setup is nothing new; one of the area teams has been in the Bloomington Sectional semifinals more often than not in recent years. But it would have been better for local fans, from a travel perspective, if they potentially could have driven to Providence to cheer their favorites.

West, Central, South and Minooka have been assigned to Sub-Sectional B of the Bloomington Sectional, where 10 teams will be split into two regionals. The predetermined regional hosts are Bradley and Moline, and the area teams could wind up at either of those sites, depending largely on how the seeds work out. They are scheduled to be announced May 10.

The Providence Sectional includes Lockport, Lincoln-Way Central and Lincoln-Way East. Lockport is a regional host, along with Homewood-Flossmoor, Richards and Sandburg. The Providence winner will face the Illinois Wesleyan winner in a supersectional at the University of Illinois in Champaign. Providence has won that game the past two years en route to the 4A state finals at Silver Cross Field. Baseball is nothing if not unpredictable, but might a three-peat be brewing?

A 4A supersectional at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood will pit the St. Rita Sectional winner against the Oswego Sectional winner. Bolingbrook, Plainfield Central, Plainfield East, Plainfield North and Romeoville are in the Oswego field, with Bolingbrook and Plainfield East among the four regional hosts.

Meanwhile, Lincoln-Way West will host a 20-team 3A sectional that could have two area teams in the semifinals.

The Warriors, Joliet Catholic, Morris and Coal City are among the 10 teams assigned to Sub-Sectional A, with JCA and Morris regional hosts.

Oak Forest, always a threat, is in Sub-Sectional B so would not face any

As many are aware, he is battling bile duct cancer. A cancer awareness and fundraising event in his honor is scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. April 28 at the Jacob Henry Mansion. pitcher who will have many great games in the future. We just executed to perfection against him today.”

Plainfield South ace Konnor Ash (6-1) fired a two-hitter at the Wildcats, striking out eight and walking two.

His second walk, to Tony Marino, forced in the only Central run.

“The seven runs in the first inning were huge for me,” Ash said. “I might have lost my concentration a little in the fourth inning after allowing the first two hits of the game, which led to my two walks. But I pitched well today, and this was a big win.”

Enloe finished 4 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. “It’s very important for us to score the first runs of the game,” Enloe said.

“I had a very good day at the plate, as did our whole team. This was a big win and we want to continue our success tomorrow at home.”

Mayerhofer and Mikel, the Cougars’ keystone combination at short a second, each finished with two hits, including a double, and an RBI. “I had been struggling in the No. 2 hole until recently when coach Bodine

inserted me in the No. 9 spot in our order,” Mayerhofer said. “In the nine spot, I get to see a lot more fastballs. I have been really squaring up on them and hitting very well of late. Our approach today was outstanding against Solebo.”

“In my last two at bats, my approach was very good,” Mikel said.

“It felt good to get the single and the RBI double, which turned out to-be the game-winner in the sixth.”

“Konnor (Ash), pitched well,” Bodine added. “Nick Enloe had an outstanding day at the plate and has been our best hitter all season. It’s great to see Nick Mayerhofer really hitting the ball well for us in the nine hole.”

Plainfield Central (10-5, 4-3) hopes to regroup Wednesday at Plainfield South (11-4, 4-3) before returning home to complete the series Thursday.

“Sultan (Solebo) just didn’t have the same approach to this game as he had in his last four starts,” Plainfield Central coach John Rosner said.

“Hopefully we can all learn from this defeat and come out tomorrow playing well.”

PLAINFIELD – Shortly before the Plainfield South baseball team took the field to battle rival Plainfield Central on Tuesday, coach Phil Bodine discussed his Cougars’ 10-4 start.

“Our pitching has been amazing, our defense solid,” he said. “The only problem we have had thus far is not coming through with the timely hit.”

After Marco Escobar’s infield single and a Plainfield Central miscue scored leadoff man Trey Stewart with the first run of the game in the top of the first inning, Bodine’s wish became reality.

Run-scoring singles from Gabe Wair and Nick Enloe followed.

Antonio Gutierrez, the No. 8 hitter, drove home two more with a single.

Nick Mayerhofer (2 for 4, RBI) doubled home Gutierrez and the seventh run scored on an overthrow. The first-inning 7-spot led to an 11-1 Southwest Prairie Conference win in six innings.

Latos lowers ERA to 0.49 as White Sox beat Angels

CHICAGO – Mat Latos didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning, Todd Frazier and Jose Abreu hit solo home runs and the White Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels, 5-0, Tuesday night to snap a three-game losing streak.

Latos (3-0) allowed two hits in 61/3 innings and lowered his ERA to 0.49 through three starts.

Frazier went deep to left in the second and Abreu homered to center in the fifth off fastballs by Matt Shoemaker (1-2) in the Angels’ fourth loss in five games.

Andrelton Simmons doubled to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 12 games and end Latos’ night after 101 pitches. Adam Eaton then threw out Sim-

mons at the plate when he tried to score off C.J. Cron’s one-out single to right.

Nate Jones pitched two innings for his first career save.

Illinois RB Brown tears ACL, will miss another season

CHAMPAIGN – Illinois running back Dre Brown said he has torn the ACL in his left knee and will miss a second straight season.

Brown announced on Twitter he injured it during practice Monday.

The injury comes almost exactly a year after he tore his right ACL. He missed his freshman season.

Brown was expected to be a primary backup for sophomore Ke’Shawn Vaughn.

CHICAGO – Milt Pappas, who came within a disputed pitch of throwing a perfect game for the Cubs in 1972 and was part of the lopsided trade that brought Frank Robinson to Baltimore, died Tuesday. He was 76.

Pappas died of natural causes at his home in Beecher, said his widow, Judi Pappas.

The 6-foot-3 right-hander won 209 games during his 17-year career with the Orioles, Cincinnati Reds, Atlanta Braves and Cubs, finishing with a career ERA of 3.40 to go along with 1,728 strikeouts and 43 shutouts. Pappas was a teenager when he joined the Orioles in 1957 and he started quickly.

FOOD A vegetarian Passover entry anyone can love

Let’s say most of the folks coming to your place for the Passover feast are vegetarians. And let’s say you want to cater to them without breaking the hearts of the die-hard carnivores whose mouths water at the very thought of pot roast. Is there a centerpiece dish that will make everyone happy?

Yes. As long as your vegetarians can tolerate dairy, this “lasagna” is a winner.

Passover forbids the eating of most foods made with flour, which is why this recipe calls for whole matzos (an exception to that rule) in place of lasagna noodles. Matzo turns out to be a perfect stand-in. Thin and square (they’re usual 6- or 7-inch squares) a whole sheet of matzo is a tailor-made bed on which to layer other ingredients. It also absorbs flavors beautifully, holds its shape when baked, and browns nicely in the oven. I’ve paired the matzo with zucchini, which loses its watery blandness and gains a spring-like assertiveness.

I dreamed up this dish as a Passover entree, but it would work equally well as the centerpiece for a brunch any time of the year.

As for your Passover guests, here’s a prediction from someone who married into the tribe: As soon as they realize they can’t argue about the food, they’ll happily move on to politics.

Zucchini Matzo Lasagna

Start to finish: 1½ hours (1 hour active) Servings: 8 2 pounds medium zucchini Kosher salt and ground black pepper 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 cup finely chopped yellow onion 2 teaspoons minced garlic 1/3 cup packed fresh dill, chopped, plus extra chopped dill to garnish 16-ounce container cottage cheese 2 cups whole milk 3 large eggs 1 tablespoon lemon zest 8 ounces cream cheese

An iconic chicken recipe you need in your life

When this recipe first was created by The Silver Palate catering and take out shop on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, it earned an immediate following.

When the recipe later was published in “The Silver Palate Cookbook” by Sheila Lukins and Julee Rosso, it was a revelation, mostly thanks to its eccentric ingredient list.

To taste it was to be converted.

And so for a nice chunk of time during the ’80s, this dish made appearances on tables all over the country, sometimes for family dinners, but more often for entertaining. I grew up on this dish. It was one of the first “grown up” meals I served to family and friends as a budding cook, and not too long ago I even made it to bring to a kindergarten potluck for one of my kids.

Of course, I also had a deeper connection to this recipe. My father, Peter Workman, was the publisher of the “Silver Palate Cookbook,” so I really felt like the recipe was part of my family’s culinary

history.

And for a long time it was the first dish on my Passover menu every year.

Thankfully, this is not a dish to forget, or imagine to be dated in any way. The faultless and brilliant combination of flavors is timeless, the recipe is pretty foolproof, the chicken is unfailingly moist, and it can be made ahead. Make it again, if you have forgotten it for a while. Or make it for the first time, and tell me that you’re not a card-carrying lifetime chicken marbella fan.

Chicken Marbella

Start to finish: 1½ hours, plus marinating (30 minutes active) Servings: 10 1/2 cup olive oil 1/2 cup red wine vinegar 1 cup (about 8 ounces) pitted prunes 1/2 cup (about 3 ounces) pitted Spanish green olives 1/2 cup capers, with a bit of juice 6 bay leaves

Sprinkle the chicken pieces with the brown sugar and pour the white wine around them. Bake, basting frequently with the pan juices, until the thigh pieces reach 170 degrees F. and the breasts reach 160 degrees F., 50 minutes to 1 hour.

With a slotted spoon, transfer the chicken, prunes, olives and capers to a serving platter.

Moisten with a few spoons of the pan juices and sprinkle generously with the parsley or cilantro.

Serve the remaining pan juices on the side.

Although most of my brisket experience has been spent at the smoker or the grill, I have fond memories of braised brisket, which I usually enjoyed during Passover with my Jewish relatives.

I remember the beefy steam escaping into the kitchen as the tomatoand onion-flecked meat was spooned onto a serving dish. Sadly, the taste of the brisket was always a bit of a letdown. Which is why I started smoking my briskets; it was an easy way to add lots of flavor. But recently, I decided there must be a way to add flavor to a traditional braised brisket.

But first, a brisket primer. A whole brisket averages 15 pounds, and butchers cut it in half to make it easier to sell and easier to cook.

The first cut – the lower half of the brisket – is the lean piece, also called the flat. It’s the cut most often found at grocers. But because it’s so lean, it generally has little flavor.

The second cut sits on top of the flat. Called the point, this cut is fattier and far more flavorful. Most butchers end up grinding the point for burger meat, mistakenly (at least in my

mind) assuming people won’t want a fattier cut. But I certainly do. And you should, too. And don’t worry about the fat, much of it melts away from the meat during cooking and is easily separated from the pan sauce later.

So if you want an amazing holiday brisket, ask for the point or second cut. If you don’t have a butcher in your neighborhood who can provide this for you, you can order the point from any number of online retailers, including Master Purveyors (one of the largest sellers of meat in the country). Trust me, the flavor difference is worth the trouble.

Now that you know what meat to get, let’s talk cooking. My secret for getting the best flavor is to make this recipe the day before I serve it. It is very hands-off, but needs patience and time to make it right. That includes letting it set overnight in the refrigerator. This step is important for many reasons, including that it makes it easy to remove the fat.

Though the recipe is written for an oven braise, if you have a slow cooker with a sauté setting, it’s easy to do it in that. Eight hours on high in the slow cooker is perfect.

36 Testosterone treatment controversial Dear Dr. K: I’m a 68-year-old man who has been feeling more tired and less “sexy” over the past several months. My doctor says my blood testosterone level is normal, but “low normal” – a little bit above low. I know some men take testosterone gel as a treatment for this. My doctor is not so keen on that. What’s your opinion?

Dear Reader: I don’t know nearly enough about your health or your symptoms to offer you personal advice. But I’ll tell you what I think research has shown, at least so far. I’ll warn you: It is a controversial area, and I reserve the right to change my mind as new research is published.

There’s little controversy about giving testosterone treatment when a man clearly has abnormally low blood levels, and symptoms consistent with those low levels. Such a condition is called “hypogonadism.” In such a case, treatment almost always improves the symptoms. But hypogonadism is a pretty unusual condition.

The controversy involves people like you.

As men age, our blood testosterone levels generally decrease. Many men your age have levels that are in the “low-normal” range.

That is, they are still normal, but on the low side of normal.

And some, but not all, men with low-normal testosterone levels have some of the symptoms of hypogonadism. Those symptoms include a diminished sense of well-being, fatigue, reduced muscle strength, moodiness, loss of sexual desire and erectile dysfunction.

The question has been: Does testosterone treatment help these symptoms, even when blood levels of testosterone are not abnormally low? Two studies published in 2015 shed some light on this question. The studies were randomized trials, the best kind of study for evaluating the value of a treatment.

The first study involved more than 300

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff men age 60 or older with low or low-normal testosterone levels, regardless of whether they had symptoms. The men were selected at random to receive testosterone gel treatment or treatment with a placebo gel, every day for three years. The placebo gel looked just like the real thing, but contained no testosterone.

The study carefully measured all the relevant symptoms that might be caused by lower testosterone levels. The study found no significant improvement in symptoms in men given testosterone treatment, compared with men given placebo treatment.

The second study involved about 90 younger men, ages 35 to 70. They all had Type 2 diabetes, and low (or very low-normal) testosterone levels. The men were chosen at random to receive either testosterone shots or placebo shots. There were no significant improvements in symptoms of men given testosterone, compared to men given a placebo.

These recent studies, and many (but not all) previous studies, do not demonstrate a value in giving testosterone treatments to men with low-normal or slightly low blood levels of testosterone. In addition, some other studies have indicated such treatments may raise the risk of heart trouble. So, your doctor’s disinclination to prescribe treatment seems reasonable. At the bridge table, it is tough to act like a secret agent because you must explain your methods to the opponents. There are no secret mail drops for partner only. But sometimes you can spring a surprise on the opponents, by which time it might be too late for them to reach their safe house.

In this deal, East opens one spade, South overcalls one no-trump (showing 15-plus to 18-minus points), West passes, and North raises to three no-trump. Just when everyone thinks the auction is over, East jumps out of his hiding place with a double. What does that mean?

It must be for penalty, but what else?

Some pairs play that it demands a spade lead, the suit bid by East. I think that is wrong, because what was West going to lead before the double? Right -- a spade. The double is needed to ask partner to lead a different suit, one where East is hoping to defeat the contract.

In this auction, a heart lead should stand out. North-South did not try to locate a 4-4 or 5-3 heart fit, and it is West’s shortest suit.

Note that after a heart lead, East takes the first five tricks for down one. If West leads a spade, though, South wins 11 tricks.

Are you wondering about South’s running to four diamonds? Yes, he can make that (if North passes), but minus 130 is still a lot cheaper than minus 660.
