JOLIET – Joliet is getting a MyGrain.

MyGrain Brewing Co. is the new name that a couple of brewpub developers are using for the microbrewery they plan to open in Union Station, city Economic Development Director Steve Jones said.

Jones gave an update on the brewpub project Thursday to the Joliet City Council Economic Development Committee.

He also discussed plans to find a banquet facility operator to take over The Grand Ballroom in Union Station, which Bussean Custom Caterers will leave in January.

Jones said the brewpub operators signed the lease for Union Station last week.

One thing that has changed since the developers announced their plans to call the brewpub the Golden Spike is the discovery that the name cannot be used because it already is taken by a beer out West, Jones said.

“It’s now going to be called MyGrain Brewing Company,” Jones said. “It’s something you’ll remember.”

Bussean Custom Caterers has operated the banquet hall since 2001. But Jones said owner Jeffrey Bussean has told city officials he is scaling back to devote attention to his other operations, including the Patrick Haley Mansion in Joliet, and a new facility being developed in Wayne.

“It was great that he has given us plenty of notice,” Jones said. “The goal is to get someone to just walk into that place when he leaves and carry on the same business.”

Councilman Pat Mudron asked if the

city would consider proposals that would include more than a banquet operation.

Jones said other uses on days when banquets are not held would be welcomed.

Councilman Larry Hug, chairman of the committee, said he would expect “the foundation” of the operation to be the banquet business, while other uses could put the space to more use on off days.

In the criteria for potential tenants reviewed by the committee, the city will review proposals to take over the space based on experience in banquet and related businesses, experience with historical facilities, and “vision for the The Grand Ballroom.”

During the height of train travel, The Grand Ballroom is in a space that at one time was the main lobby area where train passengers would gather. The station, built with limestone, opened in 1912.

The Request for Qualifications that would be used to advertise the 10,250-square-foot space points out that the station is on the National Register of Historic Places and notes The Grand Ballroom features that include 24-foot palladium windows, marble floors and rotunda ceilings.

“You can’t replicate space like this,” Jones told the committee.

Lincoln-Way District 210 report shows inappropriate fund expenses, transfers

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – A report by an accounting firm shown Thursday to the Lincoln-Way School District 210 Board showed fund transfers that board Vice President Christine Glatz described as a “great shell game.”

Christine Torres, of the accounting firm Crowe Horwath, presented results of an agreed-upon procedures examination of bond issues from 2006, 2007 and 2009 that came out of a referendum that led to the construction of West and North schools, well as the improvement of Central and East schools.

“It does show there was money spent inappropriately. It shows that transfers were made without presentation to the board and without board approval, and that transfers between bank accounts occurred that should not have occurred,” Torres said in response to a question by board member Kathleen Casey.

The accounting problems uncovered in the AUP led the board to approve a resolution to affirm Crowe Horwath’s findings, correct transfers in funds and prevent improper and unauthorized loans or transfers between district funds going forward.

The resolution also directed auditors to include internal controls in their audit.

All board members approved the resolution, with the exception of board member Ar-

vid Johnson, who was absent.

In her report on the AUP, Torres told the board that all bond proceeds and earnings were spent for school purposes but that there were expenses made to the wrong funds and transfers done that were not presented to the board or done with board approval.

She said 2009 bond proceeds were not deposited in the capital projects fund as they should have been and were, instead, deposited in the life-safety fund.

In another instance, the capital projects fund was closed at the end of fiscal 2011 without board approval, she said.

Glatz asked Torres when she was talking about transfers, if what was going on was a “great shell game” and that there were transfers that required board approval that never were brought to its attention. Torres affirmed both questions.

After Torres finished her report, the board decided to deviate from its meeting agenda and head into closed session. After it returned to open session, John Izzo, one of the district’s attorneys, read a resolution about the AUP and board directives.

District officials have said Crowe Horwath’s letter to the district and any resolution resulting from public action by the board to accept or address findings will be posted on the district’s website no later than close of business Friday.

Joliet students visit Chicagoland Speedway to learn about potential careers

Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – A group of Joliet Central High School students spent their school day Thursday at Chicagoland Speedway as part of Joliet Township High School District 204’s job shadowing program.

After a bus tour of the facility, about 30 students got a bird’s-eye view of the racetrack from the sixth floor roof of the suite tower, an area normally restricted to race team spotters and media during events.

In the media center, the epicenter of the facility, students received educational and career advice from track President Scott Paddock before breaking into groups to hear about career choices and shadow one of several speedway staff members.

The track has 35 full-time employees, including mechanics and plumbers, landscape architects, construction crew members, business office workers and marketing staff.

“There are all types of skill sets that we need to run this facility,” Paddock said.

Paddock told students his three top pieces of advice for being successful in business are to have a tremendous work ethic, a positive attitude and the ability to get along well with others.

“If you combine that with the education foundation you are getting right now [at JTHS], you can write your own ticket,” Paddock said.

Paddock also stressed the importance of the ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing. He encouraged students to take as many English and writing courses as possible, as well as public speaking classes.

Joliet Central STEM teacher Chris McGuffey said JTHS partners with Chicagoland Speedway in job shadowing as well as other projects to give students real-world experiences.

All JTHS sophomores attend a job shadowing program at one of several area businesses, he said.

Chicagoland Speedway works with the high school on student-run projects that provide other types of experiences. Students have designed, built and decorated benches, sponsored by local businesses. Each bench had a racing design along with the sponsor’s logo.

Welding student Mauricio Garcia wanted to find out about all the work that goes into the steel beams that hold up the spectator seating. “[They] hold up the entire audience at one of the largest sporting centers in the U.S.,” Garcia said.

Student Julisa Cano would like a career as a construction engineer. She wanted to learn what’s necessary to build tall structures to be durable and safe.

JOLIET – A Will County Board committee voted Thursday to approve a $12.5 million contract for design and engineering services for the courthouse project, but rejected a loan request to keep afloat a prison diversion program amid the Illinois budget crisis.

The County Board Executive Committee voted, 3-6, against specialty court coordinator Julie McCabe-Sterr’s request for monthly loans of $75,000 on an as-needed basis to Adult Redeploy Illinois through June 30. At a previous meeting, McCabe-Sterr had requested $278,000 to continue the program through November.

Voting against the request were committee members Chuck Maher, R-Naperville; Darren Bennefield, R-Aurora;

Mike Fricilone, R-Homer Glen; Don Gould, R-Shorewood; Tom Weigel, R-New Lenox; and Jim Moustis, R-Frankfort, according to staff.

Members Herbert Brooks, D-Joliet; Don Moran, D-Romeoville; and Judy Ogalla, R-Monee, voted to approve the loan.

Eighty-six chronic offenders currently are in the ARI court program, where they receive mental health counseling, job placement help and routine assessments. The program diverts high-risk offenders away from prison.

The vote’s impact on other specialty court programs, including the county’s longstanding drug court, is unclear. McCabe-Sterr late last year shifted about $200,000 from the county’s drug court program to the ARI program.

Illinois owes the ARI program more than $220,000.

JOLIET – Rialto Square Theatre board Chairman Dan Vera said there is interest in the general manager’s job.

The job became available a week ago when the board approved a separation agreement with Randy Green, who came under fire when the theater fell behind on $120,000 in payroll taxes dating as far back as November.

The position has not been posted yet, and Rialto management still is trying to get its financial situation under control. But Vera said he has been receiving inquiries from people in the theater business.

“There’s a number of people out there who are interested in the position and asking for more information about what we’re looking for,” Vera said Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Vera planned to discuss the job requirements with members of the Rialto’s foundation board, the major fundraising arm for the theater. He said the plan still is to fill the job “ASAP,” as he said at the April 6 Rialto board meeting, when Green officially was let go.

“That’s what I said, and I meant it,” Vera said.

The job can be expected to be challenging.

In addition to the latest financial problems at the Rialto, the theater has struggled for years to make ends meet.

The theater and adjacent office space are overseen by the state-created Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority, which Vera chairs. Unlike similar civic center authorities, the authority does not have any tax dollars dedicated to its operations and depends on a $600,000 stipend from the city of Joliet to help fund the Rialto.

But the people who have been calling know the ropes, Vera said.

“I’m very encouraged by the inquiries and the interest I’ve received,” he said. “These are people who are already in the business that are general managers or executive directors of other performing arts centers.”

In the meantime, the payroll taxes have been paid with money from the city’s annual stipend. Vera said the Rialto is chipping away at a backlog in vendor bills. And, Vera said, the Rialto will be able to satisfy the city’s insistence that the three month’s severance in Green’s separation agreement not come out of the city stipend.

“That money has been identified,” he said, noting it will come from interest earnings generated by the foundation.

Also shot down Thursday was a proposal to give five countywide elected official positions 1 percent raises each year over a four-year period beginning at the start of the next term. The positions of auditor, coroner, circuit clerk, recorder of deeds and county executive all currently earn a $93,116 annual salary.

Despite the lack of approval, the committee pushed it to the full board for consideration next week.

LOCAL BRIEFS Crash on I-55 in Bolingbrook causes fatality

BOLINGBROOK – The driver of a motorcycle was killed in a crash Thursday on Interstate 55 just south of Route 53 in Bolingbrook.

The motorcycle ran into the rear of a Dodge Durango at 1:30 p.m., and the motorcycle driver – Brian Readus, 45, of Naperville – was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to an Illinois State Police news release.

The driver of the Durango was not injured, nor was the Durango’s sole passenger.

Northbound right and center lanes were shut down most of the afternoon at the spot where the crash occurred, according to state police.

State police and the Bolingbrook Fire Department responded to the incident.

Mount Prospect man seriously injured in I-55 crash

SHOREWOOD – A 49-year-old Mount Prospect man was seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash Thursday on Interstate 55 near Route 52.

The driver was traveling northbound at 1:12 p.m. in Shorewood when his car went off the roadway and rolled over, according to Illinois State Police Sgt. Matt Wierzbinski.

Preliminary reports indicate the driver was ejected from the vehicle and suffered broken bones as a result. He was transported to Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in Joliet.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, Wierzbinski said. Reconstruction investigators were at the scene to determine what happened.

Channahon Park District’s I&M Canal cleanup hits volunteer limit But Canal Corridor Association seeking volunteers

mmallory@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – Reservations filled up in late March for this weekend’s cleanup of about 14 miles of the I&M Canal Trail within the Channahon Park District’s limits.

Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, church groups and business groups are teaming up for the annual spring cleaning effort, Channahon Superintendent of Park Planning Daryl Cole said. In cooperation with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources – which owns, manages and maintains the I&M Canal – groups are assigned to clean sections of the trail every April.

Participation in the fourth-annual cleanup maxed out in large part because of a dedicated volunteer base in the Channahon area.

“A big thing that’s happening now is these groups are all looking for opportunities to volunteer time,” Cole said. “I think that’s a big reason why we’re booked up.”

But it’s not the only effort this month to clean America’s first designated National Heritage Corridor.

The Canal Corridor Association is coordinating a cleanup April 23 throughout the 62-mile trail, also in collaboration with the IDNR. CCA President and CEO Ana Koval said that so far, only a few stretches of the trail are spoken for.

Koval said the CCA is looking to place those interested in volunteering in certain sections of the trail.

“Call us, and we’ll make sure there’s an open space,” Koval said.

“There’s always plenty.”

The I&M Canal officially was recognized in 1964, when it was designated a National Historic Landmark, yet many people don’t realize how much of a resource it is, Koval said. The ones who are familiar with it often walk, run, bike, fish, kayak or canoe in or along the canal. The CCA recently boosted efforts to attract some of the thousands of tourists who come to Chicago each year.

“It’s important that we have this asset in great condition for our residents and our visitors,” Koval said. “We need to attract more visitors, which brings more money into our communities. And we can do it without a whole lot of money from the state.”

LOCAL BRIEFS Nicor gas main work on Chicago Street to start soon

JOLIET – Gas main work is scheduled to begin April 25 on Chicago Street in Joliet, starting at Jefferson Street and moving north to Liberty Street.

Rotating lane closures, block by block, will be in place throughout construction. At least one lane of traffic, northbound only, will be maintained during the various phases of construction, according to a news release from the city.

All local businesses will remain accessible, officials said, and impacts to street parking will be minimized as much as possible.

The project will be completed in two phases. The first phase, from Jefferson Street to Cass Street, is expected to be completed by June 8. The second phase, from Cass Street to Liberty Street, is anticipated to be completed by Aug. 15. All through traffic is encouraged to find alternate routes. No detour will be posted, according to the news release.

Crest Hill to start flushing hydrants this weekend

CREST HILL – The Crest Hill Water Department will begin spring fire hydrant flushing starting at 9 a.m. Sunday.

Flushing will be performed from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and continue through April 29.

Residents are asked to check their water before using it on days when hydrant flushing is in their area, because some residents may notice water discoloration, according to a news release from the city.

Dockus said that at every event, there are experiences such as the one he had a few years back, when he was assisting a single mom who had a son with special needs. They got clothing and fresh fruit and vegetables, and Dockus carried the items to her car for her.

“She gave me a hug and said, ‘You don’t know what this means to me and my family.’ I walked away with tears in my eyes,” he said. “Everyone has an experience that touches someone.”

JOLIET – The annual Joliet Cares event scheduled for Saturday exists to meet the needs of those it serves.

Joliet Cares is a group of volunteers who annually hold an event that aims to meet medical and physical needs as well as spiritual needs, according to the Christian nonprofit organization’s website.

Kim Dockus, one of the founding members of Joliet Cares, said the organization started with a group of people who were “church friends who didn’t want to be pew sitters anymore.”

They decided to pull together an event that would provide access to a variety of needs – such as free medical screenings, haircuts, family photos and a food bank – to assist those in need.

Saturday’s event – scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ridgewood Baptist Church in Joliet – is the eighth annual community event. It started in 2009 with 217 people served. Last year, closer to 700 people were assist-

Plainfield Park Dist. OKs pact with union workers

PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Township Park District Board reached a contract agreement Wednesday night with a newly unionized group of maintenance workers, the district’s executive director said Thursday.

This marks the maintenance workers’ first contract with the district under Service Employees International Union Local 73.

“This is a contract that is felt on both sides that is fair for the employer and the union members,” Executive Director Carlo Capalbo said.

The workers first petitioned in July 2014 to unionize through SEIU, which covers employees at several park districts in the Chicago area, including the Chicago Park District and Hazel Crest Park District.

The effort to unionize began after the controversial firing in November 2013 of maintenance employee Joel Schumaker, who claimed he was disciplined and fired for union activities. As part of a settlement agreement, Schumaker was paid for 16 weeks in back wages but did not return to work.

Capalbo said he could not comment on that incident, noting he was not a park district employee when unionization efforts first began.

“I know there’s some history there, but I can’t speak to that,” Capalbo said.

SEIU Local 73 spokesman Adam Rosen did not immediately return phone calls Thursday seeking comment. The district and SEIU Local 73 have negotiated a contract in good faith since the union was formed in August 2014.

Fourteen employees are covered by the contract, whose terms cover pay

rates, working conditions, fringe benefits and other employment conditions.

Union employees will see a $1-anhour retroactive pay raise to Jan. 1, 2015, in addition to a 2.5 percent increase as of Jan. 1, 2016, and 2017. A 2 percent raise will be given Jan. 1, 2018.

Employees earning $13.50 an hour by the ratification date also will earn a 25-cent raise.

The agreement will help “facilitate peaceful adjustment of grievances which may arise from time to time”

Contract terms also state that union members “shall not instigate, call, encourage, sanction, recognize, condone or participate in any strike.” In turn, the employer agrees not to lock out employees during the term of the agreement.

The contract, which is subject to union ratification, would be in effect through Dec. 31, 2018.

JOLIET – The Joliet Slammers are looking for families to provide a bed for their budding baseball players.

With spring training for players around the corner, the Joliet Slammers are seeking host families to provide a semi-private area with a bed for players.

Families are not required to provide meals or groceries for players and can set house rules. They also can receive season tickets and other benefits as part of the deal.

“They’re not making a lot,” Heather Mills, Joliet Slammers general manager, said about the players.

“They’re professional athletes, but at this stage they’re not making much money, certainly not enough to afford an apartment in the Chicagoland market,” she said.

The Joliet Slammers are looking for host families from April 27 until the end of the season, which is Labor Day weekend, Mills said.

Mills said the Slammers need host families the most when players arrive April 27 for spring training camp, be-

cause that is when the team has more players than any other time.

She said the team has nine host families – some who provide more than one bed – and would need more.

Host families provide a home away from home for players. They become a part of the family. “[Families] do get close to the players staying with them and [want] to be part of their success,” Mills said.

As part of selection process, the Joliet Slammers will ask to meet with families, visit the homes and ask questions about house rules or other details, such as if they have pets, or children with allergies, that players need to be mindful of.

Host families set the rules, and players who do not abide by them will be asked to leave and make their own living arrangements or be kicked off the team, Mills wrote in an email.

She also wrote that players are on the road quite a bit and there may be weeks when they spend only a night or two in a family’s home.

Plainfield police officer uses drug Narcan to stop overdose PLAINFIELD – A Plainfield police officer recently used the medication Narcan to stop an overdose for the first time in Plainfield Police Department history.

At 4:06 p.m. Tuesday, officer Luke Ostreko was dispatched to a home in the 16300 block of South Arbor Drive in Plainfield, where he found an unresponsive 24-year-old man, according to a department news release.

medications, the news release stated.

After evaluating the man, Ostreko administered Narcan, which is used for reversing heroin and prescription opiate overdoses.

The man received additional first aid and was brought to a nearby hospital, where he was expected to make a full recovery.

The department, with the assistance of the Plainfield Fire Protection District and the Will County Executive’s Office, began March 15 training every sworn officer in administering Narcan.

Gene spent his youth in southern Illinois, Richland County. He spent his working years in Steward, IL, and Lockport, IL. He retired to Anacortes, WA, in 1988 and spent his last nine years in Lacey, WA. He graduated from Olney Area High School in 1948. Gene married Stella Weinzierl in Oct. 17, 1952, in Dixon, IL. Gene worked for the railroad in northern Illinois and Material Service Rock Quarry in Lockport, IL. He retired from Argonne National Research Laboratory in Lemont, IL. Gene loved spending time with his family.

He enjoyed playing card games, Western movies and billiards.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of 63 years Stella R. Dean of Lacey, WA; son James (Roma) Dean, Salem, IA; daughter Nancy (Bob) Pope, Lacey, WA; 3 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren; 4 brothers and a sister.

John B. McGrady, age 93, died on April 13, 2016, at the Illinois Veteran’s Home in La Salle, Illinois. He was born in Aurora, Illinois on February 6, 1923. He graduated from St. Mary School in Aurora, Illinois, in 1936 and from Marmion (Military) Academy in 1940.

He served in the United States Army in Eastern Europe during World War II. When he returned home from World War II, he earned a degree in accounting and worked in that field until his retirement in 1986.

He married Helen Veneros at St. Peter Church in Aurora on April 30, 1949.

He is survived by a daughter, Mary Ann (James) Bennett; a son, Michael (Diane) McGrady; a sister, Kay Douglas; a daughterin-law, Ellen McGrady; seven grandchildren, James Bennett III, Maureen Bennett, Michael (Cara) McGrady, Michelle (Rory) Doheny, Mark McGrady, Merrick McGrady, and Matthew McGrady; a great-grandson, Andrew Bennett; several nieces and nephews; and a beloved caregiver, Roderick Mendoza.

Unemployment up again in March, hits 6.5 percent

CHICAGO – Illinois’ jobless rate edged up again in March as the state added jobs but not enough to keep pace with the number of people looking for work.

The state Department of Employment Security said Thursday that unemployment hit 6.5 percent in March. That was up from 6.4 percent in February and the fifth straight monthly increase.

Department director Jeff Mays said the increase in the unemployment rate comes in spite of the state adding 14,700 more jobs in March than it lost.

The national unemployment rate for March was 5 percent.

In Illinois, the leisure and hospitality industry sector added a net 6,300 jobs in March, and construction employment grew by 4,100 jobs.

Manufacturers cut a net 3,100 jobs, and professional and business services firms shrunk by 1,400 jobs.

CHICAGO – A federal judge has sentenced a former Cook County police officer to 7½ years in prison for robbing drug dealers while on duty.

Federal prosecutors said Wednesday that 45-year-old Robert Vaughan of Frankfort admitted in a plea agreement to robbing eight drug dealers from 2011 to 2013, earning $300,000.

Officials said he stole cocaine, marijuana and contraband cigarettes. He pleaded guilty last year to one count of robbery.

Prosecutors said Vaughan would arrest suspects but keep the narcotics and release them without charges. They said Vaughan sold the narcotics in exchange for cash. Prosecutors said he also stole marijuana based on tips from informants.

Vaughan was arrested in November 2014 along with another officer after stealing 70 pounds of marijuana from someone they believed was a drug courier but actually was an undercover federal agent.

Beauty licenses expedited for pre-release prisoners

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois regulators are making it easier for prisoners on the verge of release to apply for state barber and cosmetology licenses while they remain behind bars.

The Illinois departments of corrections and financial and professional regulation announced a new measure this week allowing inmates who’ve completed coursework for those licenses to apply for state certification within six months of their expected release or parole.

Inmates will meet with the state licensing boards by video conference.

Officials said the move will reduce employment barriers for ex-offenders and is a response to a state Criminal Justice and Sentencing Commission recommendation.

USDA: Cooler temperatures delay Illinois planting

SPRINGFIELD – Federal officials said cooler temperatures sometimes dipping below freezing have prohibited Illinois agricultural producers from planting until they find warmer soil.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its weekly crop report for Illinois that fieldwork continues, and the spring calving season has begun.

The USDA’s crop report indicates the statewide average temperature was 41 degrees – 6 degrees below normal.

Precipitation averaged just more than half-an-inch, also less than normal.

Topsoil moisture was rated at 74 percent adequate. Subsoil was 82 percent adequate.

CHICAGO – A day after a task force blasted the Chicago Police Department for decades of discrimination, law enforcement officials weighed which of the panel’s recommendations could be adopted and how much they might add to Chicago’s already heavy financial burdens.

The only thing clear about the group’s 190-page report was it can’t be treated how critics say previous studies were – shoved into a desk drawer and forgotten.

“Either we act now and do the right thing or the Department of Justice is going to mandate that we turn and do the right thing,” Alderman Anthony Beale said, referring to a separate review of Chicago police practices being conducted by the federal government.

The task force created late last year by Mayor Rahm Emanuel portrayed the Chicago department as a place where racist officers have been able to hide behind rules and procedures, and police brutality

Trump campaign worker wherever school authorities won’t face battery charges spend the time and money to WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Donald Trump’s campaign manager won’t be prosecuted for battery after briefly grabbing a female reporter’s arm at a campaign event, but prosecutors said Thursday the situation might have been avoided with two simple words: I’m sorry.

State Attorney Dave Aronberg said at a news conference there wasn’t enough evidence to justify bringing misdemeanor simple battery charges against Corey Lewandowski for the March 8 dustup with Michelle Fields, then a reporter for the conservative Breitbart News website.

Although Lewandowski’s act wasn’t criminal, Aronberg said there may have been an easy way to defuse things.

“In a case like this we do encourage an apology. Had an apology been given at the beginning of all this, we could have avoided the whole criminal justice process,” Aronberg said.

Contamination seen in 19 Detroit schools’ water

DETROIT – Detroit’s hardpressed school system has found elevated levels of lead and copper in nearly a third of its elementary schools, contamination that one expert said could be found nationwide,

Man who walked into fire station quizzed on ambush HOUSTON – Investigators questioned a man Thursday fitting the description of a gunman who authorities say ambushed a Texas deputy constable from behind after a traffic stop and critically injured him.

The man showed up at a nearby fire station after the shooting, Houston police spokesman Kese Smith said. No other information was released about him including what he may have told fire personnel when he appeared.

The man has not been arrested or charged, Smith said, adding that authorities were not actively looking for anyone else.

Bitterly feuding, Clinton, Sanders clash in debate The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – Deepening their increasingly bitter feud, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders aggressively challenged each other’s judgment to be president in Thursday night’s Democratic debate, sparring over Wall Street banks, how high to raise the minimum wage and gun control.

The showdown in Brooklyn came at a pivotal moment in the party’s primary campaign, with Clinton leading in the delegate count but Sanders generating huge enthusiasm for his surprising candidacy.

The Vermont senator took a biting and often sarcastic tone as he sought to chip away at Clinton’s credibility on issue after issue. He went as far as to suggest that her labeling of certain criminals as “superpredators” when she was first lady was “a racist term and everybody knew it was a racist term.”

Sanders also cited Clinton’s support for the unpopular Iraq war and for free trade agreements, as well as her willingness to accept money through a super PAC, as evidence that she lacks the needed judgment to lead the nation.

Still, he backed away from previous statements questioning Clinton’s qualifications, saying the former secretary of state does have the “experience and intelligence” to be president.

Clinton made little effort to hide her irritation with Sanders’ challenging of her qualifications, saying that while she has been “called a lot of things in my life, that was a first.” She repeatedly linked herself to President Barack Obama, who remains popular among Democrats, suggesting Sanders’ criticism of her

amounted to condemnation of the president.

Clinton cast Sanders as unprepared to implement even his signature policy proposals, including breaking up big banks. She also chided Sanders for chuckling during an exchange on gun control, an area where she has painted him as cozy with gun dealers and manufacturers.

“It’s not a laughing matter,” she said. “I take it really seriously because I have spent more time than I care to remember being with people who have lost their loved ones.”

The debate was the first for the Democratic candidates in five weeks. It came ahead of Tuesday’s primary in New York, a high-stakes contest with a huge cache of delegates at stake.

For Clinton, a win in a state that twice elected her senator would blunt Sanders’ recent momentum and put his pursuit of the nomination further out of reach. A Sanders upset over Clinton would shake up the race, raising fresh concerns about her candidacy and breathing new life into the Vermont senator’s campaign.

The Democratic primary has been fought for months on familiar terrain. Clinton has cast Sanders’ proposals for breaking up banks and offering free tuition at public colleges and universities as unrealistic. Sanders has accused Clinton of being part of a rigged economic and political system, hammering her repeatedly for giving paid speeches to Wall Street banks and refusing to release the transcripts.

Clinton continued to struggle to explain why she has not released the transcripts, saying only that she’ll do so when other candidates are required to do the same thing. She tried to raise questions about Sanders’ own openness for not releasing his income taxes.

Paul Ryan says ‘Count me out’ So House Speaker Paul Ryan is officially out of the White Knight lineup.

The speaker categorically ruled himself out of contention for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, leaving no wiggle room – even in the hearts and minds of the most ardent fans who had hoped he would somehow be the man to unite a fractured party.

And more to the point that he would be the kind of smart, respected and likeable candidate who actually could win a general election.

Ryan’s latest comments came on the same day an Associated Press-GfK poll showed most voters less than thrilled with their current choices. Among all registered voters, 63 percent said they would not vote for Republican front-runner Donald Trump, and half said the same about Democrat Hillary Clinton.

AP accurately characterized voter attitudes as rather “meh.”

As the probability has grown of a contested GOP convention and as party insiders have grown increasingly worried about losing congressional seats, the need for a Plan B became obvious.

Ryan, who has his hands full with a House membership almost as fractious as the rest of the party, has engaged in his own high-profile above-the-fray battle plan.

In a speech last month to House interns he said, “Politics can be a battle of ideas, not insults. It can be about solutions. It can be about making a difference. It can be about always striving to do better.”

It was a speech many interpreted as the start of a campaign.

[Earlier this week] Ryan said, “I want to put this to rest once and for all. ... I do not want nor will I accept the nomination of our party. ... Count me out.”

Then he added, “I simply believe that if you want to be the nominee – to be the president – you should actually run for it.”

Many GOP hearts are heavy today.

But Ryan’s job will be preserving his party’s House majority – a job made infinitely more difficult by turmoil at the top of the ticket.

A tax day that’s even worse for Illinois When are Illinois taxpayers done paying their taxes? The answer isn’t April 18. Taxes are just due on that day. You finish paying them on April 29.

That’s when you finally earn enough to pay what you’ll owe for 2016. The nonpartisan Tax Foundation calls this “Tax Freedom Day,” although you probably won’t feel like celebrating when you consider that you’re likely spending more on taxes than on food, clothing and housing combined.

You’re also losing more to the tax collector with every passing year. Nationally, Tax Freedom Day is the same day it was last year, but it’s still 11 days later than it was only four years ago. When you stack Illinois up against other states, it’s actually one of the worst, ranked 44th.

Expect things to keep getting worse in the years ahead.

Tax Freedom Day keeps getting pushed back mainly because the federal government keeps taking more of our money. This year, Washington, D.C., is expected to rake in a record-breaking $3.36 trillion in tax revenue, $115

But this will still add $534 billion to the already massive federal debt, which has risen from just over $5 trillion in 1996 to nearly $20 trillion today.

Tax Freedom Day will keep getting later so long as the overspending persists. So what can Illinois lawmakers in D.C. due to avert this deepening crisis?

The obvious answer is to cut federal spending, starting with the rampant waste, fraud and abuse. Just as important is tax reform.

America’s tax code is an absolute mess. We spend a staggering 1.35 billion hours and $20 billion every year trying to comply with it. Why? Because the code is riddled with countless special-interest carve-outs, which force up individual tax rates for the rest of us.

We’re also one of only countries that double-taxes everything

businesses make overseas. Finally, our business tax rate at home is the highest in the developed world.

The results are predictable – businesses fleeing America, less money in your pocket and a Tax Freedom Day that keeps getting later.

The next president and Congress can reverse this. Real tax reform would simplify the code, eliminating corporate carve-outs and loopholes so that rates can be lowered for you and me. It would end the double taxation on business foreign earnings, giving companies a reason to stay in America and create jobs. And it would lower business tax rates to spur the economic growth that ultimately leads to more tax revenue in the years ahead.

That’s preferable to forcing Illinois taxpayers to spend ever more of their year working for the tax man. Tax Freedom Day is already far too late in the year.

A potential season-saver

Plainfield Central scores five in seventh to overcome Minooka in series finale

dgoss@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Plainfield Central’s 3-2 loss to Minooka in the opening game of this week’s SouthWest Prairie Conference three-game series could have been a season-changer in the wrong direction for the Wildcats.

However, Thursday afternoon’s 8-5 victory over the Indians, which came compliments of a five-run uprising in the top of the seventh inning that erased a 5-3 deficit, might have the exact opposite effect.

“How bad we felt Tuesday is how good we feel now,” Central coach John

Rosner said. “The loss Tuesday led into the [5-0] loss yesterday, and to take this one down to scoring five runs in the seventh, it’s just exciting for the kids.”

“We all talked after the first two games against Minooka about how big it was to bounce back,” said Wildcats senior catcher Matt Bunetta, whose RBI single with two outs in the seventh inning tied the game before Justin Willner’s vicious shot off the chest of Minooka shortstop Hayden Laczynski drove home the eventual game-winner.

“We came out here today knowing we could not give up. When I came up in last at-bat, I wanted to do all I could do bring the tying run in.”

And what about Willner following that up with the single hit about as hard as a ball can be hit?

“Justin is a great hitter,” Bunetta said. “We had a lot of good at-bats in that inning from a lot of kids. It was huge that Collin [Hudetz] drew the walk with one out that got the inning going.”

Brandon Callender, who has been battling a sprained ankle, followed Hudetz’s walk with a pinch-hit single, and Kyle Cockrell’s second RBI single of the game made it 5-4. With two outs, Bunetta and Willner delivered.

Two more runs scored on an error and a wild pitch from David Scott, who

had relieved in fourth and had kept the Indians on top until the fateful seventh inning. The explosion made a winner of submariner Cade Thornberry, who worked two innings, allowed one hit and faced the minimum six batters as the Wildcats turned a 4-6-3 double play behind him in the bottom of the seventh.

“Cade has that goofy arm slot that you don’t see often,” said Bunetta, indicating he is glad to be catching Thornberry and not have to face him. “You can’t really be ready for it. It difficult to see the ball with that delivery.”

Knights deny Tigers comeback try

cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – With his Lincoln-Way Central boys volleyball team rolling to what looked like a quick victory over Joliet West on Thursday, coach Neil Lucchetti realized that things were coming together a little too easily for his Knights.

And just as he anticipated, the Tigers rallied to force a third game between the SouthWest Suburban Conference opponents.

But Central was able to respond to the challenge and finished strong to claim a 25-16, 19-25, 25-19 win.

“The boys were hungry for this match, especially after losing in the sectional last year to Joliet West,” Lucchetti said. “This week, we were really focused at practice and we bore down on defense and it showed. But it also goes to show that when you play a tough team like West, if we’re not staying consistent, it’s going to be a battle and that’s what happened.

“We’ve been kind of finding our way, since we have a lot of inconsistency with some young kids that are up. They’re all club players, so they’re volleyball-athletic, but right now we’re still trying to piece every-

thing together. We told the boys that we only have two practices in the next two weeks, so things pick up right away and then we’ll be in May. It’s a process and we’re getting there. Once we find that consistency, we’re going to be tough to beat.”

The Knights (10-4) relied on their trio of senior leaders, Neal Brown, Mike Kulinski and Mark Sargis, to lift them down the stretch against the Tigers (8-6), who looked like the might be able to bounce back from a tough three-game loss Wednesday to Providence Catholic.

In the finale, West pulled even at 10 after a block from Luke Van Eck (five kills, three blocks). But Central scored nine of the next 12 points to grab a 19-13 lead. Brown got a kill and Willy Kickert added a block to start the run, and Sargis later added a kill before Kulinski wrapped up the spurt by recording a pair of blocks.

The Tigers used a shared block by Zach Boeringa and Van Eck to go on a 3-0 run which pulled them to within 23-19, but the Knights closed things out with another kill from Brown.

“Our team definitely has some resiliency and we always fight back,” Kulinski said. “If we play like we did in that first set, not many teams can

stop us and we can play really well. I think we really jell together more as a team than in some past years. We get along well and try to keep the mood light both in and out of the game. We just have to keep our heads up all of the time because some times we get down. If we’re confident, then we play really well.”

Things were looking good for the Knights in the second game after they jumped out to 9-2 and 13-7 leads, with Sargis supplying three kills and Mason Davis added a block and a kill.

But the Tigers swung the momentum in their favor, as Clayton Pelzer (five kills, three blocks) had four kills and Scott Lyman (nine kills, three blocks) added three kills off of sets by Kyler Van Rossum-O’Connell (22 assists) to not only put them ahead but help them win the game by a safe margin after scoring the final six points.

Chris Beltran added 12 digs for West.

“It was like we were late to the party,” Tigers coach Jason Herrmann said. “Our focus isn’t as spot-on as we want it to be right from the get-go. It’s really engaged when we’re fighting back since we’re closing huge gaps.

We just can’t start out like that.

“But I’m putting guys in different scenarios and trying different things

to get a spark. We got better blocking in games two and three. But we still aren’t moving as fluently as I want and we have to take care of the ball better. But this also happened to us last year and we were able to beat these guys and then make it to the sectional final.”

Central started to pull away early in the first game when it scored 10 of 11 points to turn an 8-7 lead into an 18-8 advantage. Brown had three kills and an ace to spark that key run.

A year ago, the Knights dropped a three-game loss to the Tigers in the sectional semifinals. They’re hoping that the stretches of good play that they saw in Thursday’s match are a good sign that this group can make another long playoff run this season.

“We really love playing West since they’re a great team that always plays us really tough,” Sargis said. “We bounced back once we finally started to get some blocks and playing a lot better defense. It’s great to play tough games like this since it gets everyone to jell together and work hard. Our libero, Mat Korzen, is playing great defense and passing well, our rightside, Mason, is blocking well, and our freshman, Jack Yurkanin, is really stepping up.”

The Wildcats, however, stranded the bases loaded in the first and third innings and left 13 runners in all. Central, which received eight walks and benefited from four Minooka errors, finished with nine hits after collecting four in the seventh. Cockrell and Bunetta had two apiece.

Minooka had nine hits as well, three by Jon Butler. He singled to ignite the four-run first inning, and his third straight hit moved Laczynski along in the fourth, and he eventually scored. But that was it for the Indians’ offense.

“You let good teams hang around long enough, and they are going to get you,” Petrovic said.

“That’s what it takes,” Rosner said of the seventh-inning rally. “You get a few hits, a couple guys put the ball in play when they have two strikes [Calendar and Cameron Cercone did that] and all of a sudden you have a big inning. It’s a funny game.”

And now, because of what transpired Thursday, the Wildcats feel as if they are genuine players in the SPC. “We’re in a very good conference, so every game will be exciting,” Rosner said. “We’re happy to be in the race.”

“I know our team is always behind me,” Thornberry said. “They did a super good job in the seventh inning.”

Minooka (6-7, 3-3) jumped to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off Willner – the starter for Central (9-4, 4-2) – on Patrick Rumsey’s RBI single, Brandon Rossiter’s two-run double and Grant Olsen’s run-scoring double, all with two outs.

However, the Wildcats chipped away with single runs in the second, third and fifth innings, while the Indians could tack on only a run in the fifth.

“That was complacency,” Minooka coach Jeff Petrovic said. “They had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the first and didn’t score. We get four in the bottom of the first and we rested on that instead of building on it. What a huge momentum swing that inning should have been for us.”

The Celtics also suffered a loss that affected the rest of their season.

Right tackle Travis Woerner, who started at right guard as a junior on the 2014 Class 7A state championship team, went down with a broken bone in his lower left leg. He made it back for the season finale, but was not yet at full strength.

“I played the whole last game, but I wasn’t close to 100 percent,” he said during Providence’s college commitment ceremony Wednesday in Sacred Heart Gymnasium. “Now I am 100 percent.”

How many opportunities the lost senior season cost the 6-foot-3, 270-pound Woerner will remain an unknown.

“Definitely, for sure, there would have been some,” said Woerner, who committed to NCAA Division III Carthage in Kenosha, Wisconsin, a member of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. “I would have had more D-IIs and maybe a couple of D-I offers. A handful of D-Is said they would take me now as a preferred walk-on.”

Providence’s boys hockey club team is among the best in the state, but Gorecki, who has played hockey since she was 4, made her name as a defenseman with the Chicago Fury girls team out of Orland Park. She plans to major in nursing at St Scholastica, which is in Duluth, Minn.

Tuck completes 1-2-3 sweep for UConn in draft WIRE, SUBMITTED REPORTS

Breanna Stewart, Moriah Jefferson and Bolingbrook graduate Morgan Tuck had historic careers at UConn.

The trio made more history Thursday in the WNBA, as the top three picks in the draft.

Stewart went first to the Seattle Storm, Jefferson second to San Antonio and Tuck third to Connecticut. It’s the first time the top three picks came from the same school.

Stewart was talking to the media when she heard that Tuck was drafted third by the Sun. “I’m so happy,” she said. “That made have me more happy than being No. 1 overall. To see her go through all that she’s been through, to leave with us and then for us to go 1-2-3, that’s picture perfect.”

No draft in any major sport has ever had the top three picks come from the same school according to information provided to the WNBA by the Elias Sports Bureau.

“We’re sisters for sure,” Jefferson said. “I heard her (Tuck’s) name and I stopped, started clapping. I got so emotional. To go through the journey the way we have and make history on the college level and history here, it’s unbelievable. I can’t think of anything being any better.”

When her name was called by new WNBA President Lisa Borders, Stewart hugged UConn coach Geno Auriemma, who was sitting at her table. Almost lost in all the attention the Cubs’ hitting has received during their hot start is how much better the team is fielding than a year ago.

Upgrading the overall defense, particularly a shaky outfield, was a significant offseason priority.

“And they did that,” pitcher Jake Arrieta said before the Cubs’ 8-1 victory Thursday to finish a three-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds.

The difference in the early going might be as impactful as what the seven-runs-a-game lineup has done.

“Defense wins games,” said Jason Heyward, the Gold Glove right fielder, the Cubs’ biggest-ticket – and perhaps biggest-impact – addition since last season. “You can score as much as you want, but you have to keep the other team to one less run.”

Errors tell only a small part of the fielding story, but the fact the Cubs have only two – including one on a play in which they got the out anyway – is a sign of how far they’ve come since a year ago when they committed four in their first four games, went through a rash of early season miscues with rookies who debuted soon after, and spent most of the

Team president Theo Epstein said in October that shoring up defensive flaws was one of the offseason priorities – then added Heyward, second baseman Ben Zobrist, brought back center fielder Dexter Fowler and taught sharp-fielding, athletic infielder Javy Baez how to play center field.

“Outfield defense was hugely important, and we felt there was a chance it could turn into a weakness if we didn’t give it some needed attention,” Epstein said Thursday. “Heyward was a great fit as the best defensive right fielder in the game, who can also play center field, in addition to the on-base skills, base running, makeup, age and other attributes that make him a special player.

“Zobrist has always been an excellent defender who didn’t have quite his normal range last year due to the knee injury. We felt he would bounce back and help us on defense at a number of positions.”

The Cubs also get a full season of Addison Russell at short, after he stabilized the position when he and Starlin Castro swapped middle-infield spots last August.

The versatile Kris Bryant, who started in left Thursday, has improved at third, in particular with his throws.

MINNEAPOLIS – With music blaring and voices chattering, the White Sox clubhouse has been a cheerful place this season.

One way or another, the Sox are finding a variety of ways to win.

Mat Latos turned in a second straight dominant start, Avisail Garcia had two powerful hits and the Sox beat Minnesota, 3-1, Thursday to sweep the three-game series. The Twins are 0-9, the worst start by any team in the majors in 13 years.

“It’s fun to watch. There’s no way you can get down in the dumps when you’re playing for a team like this, because you know your time’s going to come eventually,” said third baseman Todd Frazier, who is hitting .162 in his Sox debut.

The Twins have scored only 14 runs this season. According to STATS, the last major league team to lose its first nine games was Detroit in 2003, when the Tigers finished 43-119.

The Sox (7-2) have had no such stumble. They won their fourth in a

row, extending their best start since an 8-1 run in 1981. They’re 6-1 on the road, too, having recorded their first sweep at Minnesota since 2012.

“Do we want more runs? Of course.

But we’ve got to make some plays out there and do some fundamental things,” said Frazier, who exemplified that with a savvy play in the field that staved off a Twins rally in the sixth.

Latos (2-0) gave up one run and three hits in six innings.

In two turns with his new team, he’s logged 12 innings with just four hits, two walks and one run allowed after signing a $3 million, one-year contract the week before spring training began.

Because of elbow and knee injuries, Latos hasn’t pitched a full season since 2013.

“When I’m healthy and I have a good slider,” the right-hander said, “things tend to go really good.”

Twins starter Ervin Santana (0-1) allowed three runs in seven innings.

Adam Eaton, another one of the offseason acquisitions, started the game with a double and eventually scored.

He’s batting .394.

The soft side of nature

Artist reception is Saturday at Wildwood Gallery in Lockport

LOCKPORT – Animals, children and – recently – landscapes.

Homer Glen pastel artist Donna J. O’Donnell shies away from adult portraits, preferring to immortalize the “innocent souls” of animals and children, especially animals.

O’Donnell said people comment on how “touchable” the fur appears. She credits the soft texture to her use of velour paper, sanded paper and suede board.

“I’ve been an animal person since I was little,” O’Donnell said. “Birds, dogs, cats: It’s very soothing when I work on them.”

More than 20 pieces of O’Donnell’s art, titled “Reflections of Nature,” will be on exhibit through May 14 at Wildwood Gallery in Lockport. An artist reception will be held Saturday.

Most of the pieces are for sale, O’Donnell said, although she borrowed back a couple of her works for the show. One is a golden retriever she created for her niece. Another is a Florida ocean scene she made for a friend.

According to a news release from Wildwood Gallery, O’Donnell’s contemporary, ethereal landscapes show “depth and uncanny realism through the use of color and light.”

“Reflections of Nature” is O’Donnell’s first gallery exhibit, but it’s not the first time she’s shown her work.

O’Donnell previously displayed at home shows and various events years ago through the Lemont Artist Guild.

She works mostly in pastels, but sometimes in graphite pencils, charcoal and mixed media (pastel pencils and colored pencils or graphite pencils and charcoal). O’Donnell’s love for pastels began in childhood, through experimenting with paint-bynumber sets.

“I’d soften the lines between the colors, blend them a bit,” O’Donnell said.

In high school, O’Donnell said she painted with oils and acrylics. In the early 1970s, a pastel artist showing her work at the former Brementown Mall in Tinley Park introduced O’Donnell to pastels and velour paper.

O’Donnell was intrigued and ready to dabble.

“When I tried velour paper for the first time, I could not get over how easy it was,” O’Donnell said.

As a medium, pastels are forgiving of mistakes, she said.

“If you mess up, you work over it,” O’Donnell said.

Although O’Donnell occasionally still uses velour paper, she found suede board held the powdery chalk in place better than the paper did.

“The suede board is more durable, but it still keeps the soft texture,” O’Donnell said.

Pastels, she said, are easier to use than oils and safer, too, which is important, since O’Donnell’s young grandson likes to hang out in the studio while she’s working. And cleanup is a cinch.

PLAINFIELD – This year’s play production class at Augustana College staged the drama “Gross Indecency.” Performances were held from March 18 to March 20 in Bergendoff Hall’s Black Box Theatre.

High percussion ensembles presented their annual “Night of Percussion” concert March 3 in the cafetorium at SHJH in Frankfort.

All four of the school’s percussion ensembles, which involve 36 seventh- and eighth-grade students, performed a variety Rail Rangers offer historic train of percussion pieces, using a wide variety ride April 23 and April 24 of percussion instruments.

Rail Rangers guides will point out various historic landmarks along the route and provide ongoing narration about various topics, including the I&M Canal, Route 66, Abraham.

Over the course of 34 years, The Fashion Show has grown into one of the largest student-run fashion shows in the country.

The show is held in C.Y. Stephens Auditorium and has an annual attendance of more than 2,000.

PLAINFIELD – Plainfield South High School English teacher Jeff Jarot has been writing his entire life.

But he didn’t seriously start submitting his work for publication until after he got his graduate degree in creative writing in 2008.

Now, that side project, “Zuzu’s Petals,” will be published as a book by Lit Fest Press in May. Lit Fest Press also is publishing two of Jarot’s essays in anthologies later this year. Jarot, who graduated from Plainfield High School in 1989, said he has had literary criticisms published in journals, but this is his first book.

“Zuzu’s Petals” involves a man who has an unhealthy obsession with the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life,” and how that obsession hurts his personal relationships.

PLAINFIELD – District 202 elementary school students earned seven of nine top prizes in the Plainfield Public Library’s annual Short Story Competition.

The Short Story Competition is open to third-through fifth-grade students. The young authors had to write an original story in 500 to 600 words. The library held a finale March 12 for all competition participants. Author Jenny Meyerhoff acted as judge.

The winning District 202 students, and their stories, are: Third grade: • First place – “The Legend of Summer and Winter” by Nora Dietz, Liberty Elementary • Second place – “The Memory Closet”

Fitness protects against disease Dear Dr. K: I believe you when you say regular exercise protects my health. But I’m just 20. For me the question is, when should I begin regular exercise? The diseases exercise protects against usually don’t develop until a person is older than 60. I’d like not to have to worry about exercise for a few decades.

Dear Reader: I wish I could rid you of that worry. But, in fact, if you already are not exercising regularly, you probably are putting your health at risk 30 years from now. Many of the diseases exercise protects against actually start in young adulthood and take decades to become severe enough to cause symptoms. For example, autopsy studies have been performed on soldiers killed in war – people your age. They reveal many already have early signs of atherosclerosis, the cause of heart attacks, strokes and premature death.

Many studies have shown people who exercise regularly have lower rates of heart disease, strokes, diabetes and several types of cancer. It is true those studies usually have been done in adults older than age 50. However, a new study of young adults, like you, comes to the same conclusion.

The study was performed at Johns Hopkins and was published in the medical journal JAMA Internal Medicine.

Almost 5,000 young adults, ages 18 to 30, were included. Then they were followed for almost 27 years. The study participants came from different geographic areas in the United States. There were both males and females and people of different racial and ethnic groups.

The study did not measure how much the study participants exercised. Instead, it measured the physical fitness of these

Fitness was assessed by how many minutes study participants could exercise on a treadmill test before becoming too tired to continue. The test first was performed when a person enrolled in the study. It was repeated in most of the study participants seven years later.

The people who were the most fit when the study began had a lower risk of developing heart disease and of dying prematurely. For each extra minute people were fit enough to exercise on the treadmill, their risk of developing heart disease was lowered by 12 percent, and their risk of death was lowered by 15 percent.

The people who stayed fit when retested seven years later also had lower risks of heart disease and death than those who did not. The least-fit young adults were most likely to develop thickened heart muscle that was straining to do its job.

It’s hoped the study will continue to follow its participants for another 15 to 20 years. If so, we could learn for sure whether those who stayed fit all of their adult lives did better than those who started regular exercise in their 50s or later. That would give a better answer to your question. However, based on everything we know, my advice is you start a program of regular exercise now.

Nothing. If he shifts to a heart, it locates the queen; or, if he leads a minor, it concedes a ruff-and-sluff.
