JOLIET – The Rialto Marquee Advisory Committee decided Monday to recommend something old and something new.

“1926 look – LED board,” committee member Dan Vera said, summing up what the committee wants the Rialto Square Theatre board to consider.

The committee agreed it liked the look of an image shared by member Michael Morgan showing how the Rialto marquee that exists would look with some digital updating.

The only thing is that the Rialto already has spent nearly $200,000 for a completely different marquee that now is sitting in pieces at Landmark Sign Group’s production facility in

Indiana.

The committee is recommending that the Rialto board either have that sign redesigned so it looks like the one already on the theater in downtown Joliet or update the marquee that is there now.

“The main thing is we’ve gone from what we call a circus marquee to an authentic marquee,” Morgan said.

Morgan is a member of the “Rialto Belongs to the People” group that was formed in opposition to the unfinished marquee. Critics said it was too gaudy and did not like the memorial to donor Ed Czerkies’ parents that was to be displayed prominently.

The opposition compelled the Rialto board to reconsider the design.

Czerkies eventually decided to take his money – $350,000 – back, but the Rialto already is

The committee was formed as a fact-finding group that would help the Rialto board solicit public opinion and recommend a solution to its marquee problem.

“All I know is there’s a bunch of parts lying in a parts yard that we have to pay for,” said committee member Steve Randich, also a member of the Rialto Square Theatre Foundation that raises money for the theater. “What are we going to do with the sign? Are we going to pay him the money, say throw it away and start over?”

Safety control business reveals redesign for Trolley Barn property

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The old Trolley Barn building at 24216 W. Lockport St. has been vacant for several years in downtown Plainfield.

But a safety control company is changing that with a complete redevelopment of the dilapidated site.

Paul Wojcieszak, president of Chicago-based Sheffield Safety and Loss Control, presented his plans to the Village Board during a Committee of the Whole meeting Monday night.

The renovation would include an in-house training center for the safety control company and space for a commercial user. The warehouse and loading dock would be used to sell safety supplies.

Wojcieszak said he already has started work on the 19,230-square-foot trolley barn building, also known as the Railoc building. He plans to renovate all four sides after demolition of the west wing of the building.

The Trolley Barn was orig-

inally constructed in 1903 and 1904 for what would become the Aurora, Plainfield and Joliet railway, according to a staff report.

The trolley ceased operation in 1924 and the property was used for storage and maintenance.

From 1937 through the 1960s, the building went through several transformations.

“I’m a safety consultant,” he said. “I bought an office and inherited a Trolley Barn.”

The property has been empty for so long, Wojcieszak said he replaced several structural problems before coming to the board.

“It has clearly seen better days,” said Village Planner Michael Garrigan, noting that it is located in the downtown’s historic districts.

Garrigan said the project has the potential of becoming a commercial anchor in the western edge of the historic downtown district.

The plans call for the exterior elevations of the building to be built with steel and glass.

David Schmidt, an archi-

tectural consultant for the project, told the Village Board the original historic look of the building couldn’t be restored because of the large barn doors on the building. But the building’s design would match what would have been constructed in the historic time period.

“I think it’s a very creative solution for a building that was underutilized for a number of years,” Trustee Paul Fay said.

The trustees were in general support of the plan.

“This is going to be a huge anchor for us to make a nice addition to Lockport Street,” Trustee Margie Bonuchi said.

Some trustees had issues with parking and Wojcieszak’s request for more funding.

Wojcieszak said that the existing easement would be maintained and that he wasn’t requesting any funding beyond a facade grant through the downtown tax-increment financing district.

Garrigan said the project will come up for Village Board approval soon with revised elevations a site plan and facade grant request, based upon trustees’ direction.

Opponents to the proposed marquee generally favored keeping the existing sign, saying it is a close replica to what was on the Rialto when it opened in 1926.

The plan is to have a report from the committee with its recommendations available to the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority, the board that oversees the Rialto, for its next meeting on April 22.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – It’s time to move for Jan Staley, who has owned and operated Book Market Sales and Trading in Joliet and Crest Hill since 1977.

But she’s not moving out of the area or retiring from the bookstore at 2368 Plainfield Road. She’s moving the store across the street into a former furniture store three times the size of her current space.

The rise of electronic media, along with the recession, led to Borders, a big-chain bookstore retailer, going out of business in 2011. Barnes & Noble has significantly scaled back operations by closing stores across the nation, although the one in Joliet remains.

But for Staley, her move is about continuing to do what she loves.

“In the current location, basically the rent goes up 5 percent every year,” Staley said. “I had to make the decision that after 38 years, either I can go out of business and retire or buy the building across the street that was on sale but needed a lot of work.”

The new bookstore will feature wider aisles to accommodate customers in wheelchairs and other devices and double the space for the 225,000 to 250,000 books she has stocked since e-readers led to customers giving her their old books.

Staley expects the new bookstore at 2365 Plainfield Road to open sometime this weekend or next week, depending on when inspections take place.

New location

The current store is open and will remain so until the move is complete. But Staley and volunteers – including family, longtime customers and church members – have worked since Jan. 2, setting up shop and moving books into the new location.

The store was Tozzi Interiors, a furniture store that closed because of a fire. It had sat vacant since 2011.

“I was listening to a deep spiritual tape, and it said, ‘If you want what’s on the other side of the street, you should take it,’ ” Staley said.

Repairs included holes in the roof, electrical wire installation and plumbing work.

Staley also installed an insular lobby structure that is about twice the size of the current bookstore.

There was so much work to be done, contractors weren’t bidding on the work. But after eventually finding contractors, Staley said she also received help from volunteers and city

She said she also took out a mortgage on her mother’s home to cover renovations.

“It was a leap of faith, but it was worth it,” Staley said.

“We’re not going to be able to arrest our way out of these problems later on,” Shorewood Police Chief Aaron Klima said.

“If we don’t start early, we’re just headed for more trouble.”

As part of Monday’s event, law enforcement officials and state lawmakers read the book “Police Officers on Patrol” to preschoolers.

Lawmakers will have some “very difficult decisions” to make, Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis said, with an estimated $6 billion budget deficit and more than $110 billion in unfunded pension obligations serving as the backdrop.

But early childhood funding should be the priority, he said.

“Right now, the state’s looking at ways to reduce the prison population. But we’ve come to realize is that ... if you keep them out of the system in the first place, it’s the best investment there ever is,” Weis said. “It’s difficult for people to see that because you have to invest now for something that you won’t see for 15, 20 years.”

Elwood Police Chief Fred Hayes, who serves as president of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, said the state should avoid cuts to such programs, pointing to his 30plus years of experience with the Joliet Police Department.

JOLIET – A 19-year-old man was critically injured after being shot during a brawl between rival gangs outside a Joliet bar Sunday, police said.

Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said the incident occurred about 7 p.m. in the beer garden of Los Diaz Bar & Liquors, 674 Meeker Ave. “Thirteen people got into Serafin a gang-relat- Castellanos ed confrontation,” Gregory said. “During the fight, one man was shot multiple times in the torso and head.”

JOLIET – Joliet high school students will give presentations on U.S. and international topics this May – and high school officials need 1,000 volunteers to hear them.

Judges will be needed at Joliet Central High School on May 6 and May 14, as well as Joliet West High School on May 5 and May 15. All presentations will take place during school hours from 8:20 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

People who want to volunteer as judges do not need to prepare or have past knowledge of historical topics to participate.

Because there will be 2,000 students giving historical presentations, high school officials say they need about 1,000 volunteers to make it a success.

“It’s a really cool experience for the kids to be doing,” said Peter Nackovic, a Joliet West history teacher. “It’s applicable today. It’s issues going on right now. It’s nothing old or outdated.”

Students are researching and preparing their presentations, which “symbolize and capture all the essentials skills we want the students to develop in our history courses,” said Alberto Filipponi, JTHS curriculum director.

He said students must do research, make a historical argument and persuade a complete stranger – rather than a teacher – of their argument.

The presentations will cover U.S. history and world affairs.

“A lot of kids will do things like women’s rights in the Middle East … or something about ISIS or something going on right now,” Filipponi said.

The activity was piloted at Joliet West in the last couple of years, he said. Nackovic and other history teachers, such as Daniel Tito and Danielle Schmidt, championed the program. Filipponi previously served as a judge.

“We annexed hundreds of acres of land for future industrial or commercial development,” Rulien said of his accomplishments in office, adding that the city also attracted new businesses such as Casey’s General Store and Warren’s Collision Center.

But Rulien wished he had more time to accomplish longterm goals.

“What I can say is, I did not run a negative campaign,” Rulien said, adding that he thought the race featured misinformation about him. “I did not put the name of any of my

opponents on any literature, but there were many personal attacks against me.”

BRAIDWOOD – Braidwood will have a new mayor by the end of this month after Jim Vehrs unofficially won an electoral rematch over Mayor Bill Rulien.

According to unofficial results, Vehrs won with 715 votes, 57 percent of the total, compared to 545 votes for Rulien.

Vehrs lost to Rulien in 2013 for mayor when the pair ran for a two-year, unexpired term.

Jim Vehrs Rulien was the incumbent in both races after being appointed to the seat after former Mayor Jerry Pressley’s death in 2011.

“All the volunteers worked quite hard to get me elected,” Vehrs said. “I’d like to thank all the citizens of Braidwood who came out to vote, business organizations and owners and

also my family.”

Vehrs also withstood a petition filing challenge by City Administrator and Police Chief Richard Girot en route to winning the election.

Vehrs credited more marketing and his previous experience running for mayor as keys to his victory.

Vehrs, 54, has worked as a heavy equipment operator for International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 for the past 25 years.

He has a wife, Pamela Vehrs, three children and six grandchildren.

“I want to put the pride back in Braidwood,” Vehrs said.

Vehrs said some of his main goals for Braidwood are to bring in new business and retail development, build a better relationship with the school district, and be a police-friendly town.

“We have a reputation for our town of police harassing people,” Vehrs said. “That’s what people think.”

The Joliet City Council voted 6-3 in March to spend $361,000 for a new scoreboard at Silver Cross Field, which

the city owns and where the Joliet Slammers play.

City officials said the old scoreboard was past its expected life and may not operate on Opening Day in May. Some council members, however, contended the city should try to keep the old scoreboard running rather than spend the money for a new one.

Joliet Catholic Academy is apparently willing to give the scoreboard a try.

City Manager Jim Hock said JCA wants the scoreboard, and the city could provide it to the school for $1 if it is declared surplus.

“Basically, there’s no value in it to us,” Hock said. “Daktronics doesn’t want it.”

Daktronics, which sold the city the old scoreboard and the new one, had told council members that it may sell off parts. Hock said the electronic operating system from the scoreboard will be kept as a back-up system. Also, the city is keeping the framework used to mount the scoreboard.

JOLIET – A Joliet City Council committee this week will review proposed regulations of local pet stores and a possible donation of the Silver Cross Field scoreboard to a local high school.

The pet proposal, aimed at combating puppy mills, would require that Joliet stores sell dogs and cats obtained from animal control centers, animal shelters or local breeders.

Joliet Catholic Academy would get the scoreboard, minus the electronic operating system and support framework, if the city agrees to declare it surplus property.

Both proposals, along with other items, are on the agenda for the Land Use and Legislative Committee when it meets at 3:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 150 W. Jefferson St.

“I received a lot of social media dialog when I posted it on my Facebook page. It’s been overwhelming,” he said.

Animal activists have come out in support of the proposal, and two were at the April 6 Joliet City Council meeting urging eventual approval of the pet store restrictions.

Romeoville police: Buyback nets 73 unwanted guns Homeowner caught teenager breaking in

Joshua J. Ziebarth, 19, of the 300 block o f A m a r y l l i s Joshua J. Court in RoZiebarth meoville, was arrested on a charge of home invasion and booked into the Will County jail.

Cmdr. John Ferdinardo said police were called at 4:30

a.m. to the 100 block of Yarrow Court for a burglary in progress.

“The garage door had been left open, but it doesn’t appear [Ziebarth] knew the victims,” Ferdinardo said. “A man and woman and child were in the home when he came in and the homeowner and suspect engaged in a physical altercation.”

Ferdinardo said the man was “physically restraining” Ziebarth when officers arrived. Ziebarth allegedly had a watch from the residence in his pocket.

Ziebarth was treated for “minor injuries” at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital before being jailed, Ferdinardo said.

ROMEOVILLE – Romeoville police took in 73 firearms during a gun buyback Saturday.

Residents turned in guns with “no questions asked” between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Romeoville Police Station and received $60 a gun. Ammunition also was turned in, but was not paid for.

Police paid out a total of $4,380. The village had budgeted $5,000 for the program, Cmdr. John Ferdinardo said.

According to a summary report from the incident, a detective for the liquor commissioner will recommend that Mojoes be closed for seven days, Gregory said.

Deputy Liquor Commissioner Jim Murphy noted that Mojoes has been shut down previously, which creates the possibility that it could be temporarily closed again.

Murphy said the Saturday night incident included liquor violations and minor fire issues.

“The fire issues were resolved on-site,” he said. “The overcrowding and liquor violations will be addressed at a hearing.”

Crime Stoppers seeking info on camera theft

MORRIS – Crime Stoppers of Grundy County is seeking information about a theft that occurred some time between March 27 and April 4 from a wooded area in the South Wilmington Fireman’s Club where a Bushnell Trail Camera that had been locked to a tree was cut off and removed.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call the Crime Stoppers line at 815942-9667. Callers may remain anonymous and rewards of up to $5,000 are offered for information that leads to the arrest of the offenders of this or any other criminal offenses in Grundy County.

JOLIET – Patrons were stopped from going into Mojoes of Joliet on Saturday when the downtown club oversold a show by more than 400 tickets, police said.

Joliet’s liquor commissioner is investigating the incident and a hearing will be scheduled.

Mojoes sold 917 tickets for the show, Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said. The nightclub at 22 W. Cass St. has capacity for 500 patrons.

News spread Saturday that the show was oversold, and city officials sent a police detective and fire official to count patrons entering the club at 5:45 p.m., Gregory said. Mojoes started letting people in at 6 p.m.

“Once the count reached

500, our detective prevented more patrons from entering Mojoes,” he said.

The show, which featured the bands Testament and Exodus, started at 7 p.m. Mojoes was letting one person in as one person left, Gregory said. But a couple of hundred were standing outside.

“While the officers were there, they said they counted waiting in line 171 people at 8 o’clock,” Gregory said.

One of those who could not get in was Jim Christiansen of Somonauk.

“No one [from Mojoes] came out and told us they were oversold,” Christiansen said. “We found out from the Joliet Police Department.”

She was a member of the Plattville Lutheran Church. Carolyn enjoyed needle work, sewing and watching the Chicago Cubs.

Kevin M. Hansen, age 33, of Homewood, IL and formerly of Joliet, passed away suddenly Saturday, April 11, 2015, after a valiant and courageous seven day battle with acute myelocytic leukemia.

Kevin was born in Joliet on June 18, 1981. He was a 1999 graduate of Joliet Catholic Academy where he was the Valedictorian and Man of the Year of the Class of 1999. He attended University of Notre Dame, graduating in 2003 Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Pre-professional Science Studies and as a member of the Order of the Coif. He continued his studies at Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island, graduating in 2005 with a Masters degree in Education, as well as during the 2003-2005 school years teaching biology and chemistry at St. Peter Marian Catholic High School in Worcester, MA. He entered the seminary at Conception Seminary College in Conception, Missouri in July 2005, graduating in May 2007, with a Masters degree in Theology. He began his eight years at Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago in August 2007, teaching theology and also doing multiple assignments including football equipment manager for the state championship Mt. Carmel football program, student service coordinator,after school prefect and scoreboard operator at the home basketball games. Each year, Kevin supervised the Mt. Carmel students on a trip to Washington, DC for the annual March for Life. Kevin was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Homewood.

Beloved son of Michael and Beth (Shankland) Hansen; loving brother of Eric, Andrew (Rachel) and Mary Catherine Hansen; proud uncle and Godfather of Anthony John Hansen; and dearest grandson of Mary Shankland and Cecilia Hansen. He is also survived by his aunts and uncles, Thomas (Sheila) Hansen, Betsy Hansen, Mary (David) Lawson, Christine (Rodney) Springer, Ann (Robert) Hatfield, Susan (Robert)Flavin, John Shankland, Sarah (Frank) Turk, Thomas (Joan) Shankland, William(Tina) Shankland and Joseph (Elaine) Shankland. He was truly a good and faithful servant. His love for his mother and his unwavering commitment to Pro-Life beliefs were very true. His love for and his guidance to his little sister “Shrinny” were extraordinary. Kevin especially looked forward to being with his father and his brothers Eric and Andrew for sporting events and golf games. They were the perfect foursome.

LACON – An Illinois county said former U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock should pay for the special elections to replace him.

The Journal-Star said the Marshall County Board voted last week to send a bill for $76,000

to the Peoria Republican, who resigned last month after questions about his spending.

The letter seeks a certified check or a promise from Schock he will cover the costs of this summer’s special and general election costs. County officials estimate each will run about $38,000.

The newspaper reported that Schock’s campaign fund balance is $3.3 million.

Effingham County may allow some fireworks sales

EFFINGHAM – The Effingham County Board is considering allowing people to buy fireworks such as firecrackers and bottle rockets, going against a statewide pyrotechnics ban.

The Herald and Review said Illinois law bans nearly all fireworks, except novelties.

But municipalities can enact their own permit regulations for pyrotechnics. The County Board sees that as an opening for the ordinance, which would let adults buy Class C fireworks.

Effingham County Board Vice Chairman David Campbell said the ordinance could be a legal gray area but county leaders want to bring in business that might otherwise go to neighboring states. Iowa is the sole neighbor of Illinois that doesn’t allow public sales of fireworks.

“Instead of giving the revenue to Indiana, we’d rather keep it

here,” Campbell said.

Fire and health officials oppose the proposed ordinance, saying there would be an increase in injuries and taxpayer costs for first responders and Medicaid.

“These fireworks belong in the hands of trained professionals and not the public,” said Margaret Vaughn, director of the Illinois Rural Health Association.

The ordinance could go to a full board vote April 20 after being considered by the county legislative committee Monday.

Charlotte was an active member of Saint Rose Church, where she volunteered for many annual turkey dinners and funeral luncheons. She enjoyed wintering in Arizona, the outdoors, gardening, birds and walking.

She also took great pleasure in golf, quilt making, sewing, crocheting and knitting. Family was of the utmost importance to Charlotte, and she will be most remembered for her time spent with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Diane Marie Merriman (nee Hibler), age 61, passed away Sunday, April 12, 2015, with her family by her side, at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, following a valiant battle against cancer which she fought for 21 years.

Born August 10, 1953, in Joliet, she was a 1967 graduate of Sacred Heart Grade School and Joliet Central High School, Class of 1971. She then attended beauty school and worked many years as a hair stylist. She was a member of St. Mary Nativity Catholic Church and active in the Women’s Club where she served many years as treasurer.

Diane was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She touched many lives and always went above and beyond, putting the needs of others first. She will be remembered for always being upbeat and having a smile on her face despite her pain. She will always be an example to us.

CENTENNIAL, Colo. – The months-long process of selecting a jury in the Colorado theater shooting case is nearing its end, the judge said Monday as the pool of prospective jurors, once numbering 9,000, was reduced to 93.

Judge Carlos A. Samour Jr. said he anticipates a 12-member jury could be seated as soon as Tuesday in the trial of James Holmes.

The judge also is seeking 12 alternate jurors for a trial that could last through the summer.

Holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in the July 20, 2012, attack that killed 12 people and injured 70. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty, and opening statements are set for April 27.

Samour said he was impressed by the prospective jurors, many of whom told him they would rather not serve on the jury but would if needed, giving up four or five months of their lives.

Marco Rubio entered the presidential race Monday by offering the nation a younger generation of leadership that breaks free of ideas “stuck in the 20th century,” a jab at both Democratic favorite Hillary Rodham Clinton and his onetime Republican mentor, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

Standing in front of a banner that proclaimed “A New American Century” and repeating that refrain throughout his kickoff speech, the 43-year-old Cuban-American used his first turn as a Republican presidential candidate to take on two of America’s political dynasties. In doing so, he bet heavily on the electorate’s frustrations with Washington and his ability to change how his party is seen by voters.

“This election is not just about what laws we are going to pass,” Rubio told his evening rally. “It is a generational choice about what kind of country we will be.”

He said it’s also a choice between the haves and have-

nots, nodding to his own upbringing by working-class parents. “I live an exceptional country where the son of a bartender and a maid can have the same dreams and the same future as those who come from power and privilege.”

Earlier in the day, the firstterm Republican from Florida spoke to his top donors and told them many families feel the American Dream is slipping away and young Americans face unequal opportunities. He’s banking on the hope that he, alone among many GOP rivals, can make inroads with groups that have long eluded Republicans – young people, minorities and the less affluent.

“I feel uniquely qualified to not just make that argument but to outline the policies that we need to have in order to achieve it,” he said on the donor call.

In his televised speech, he told supporters, “The time has come for our generation to lead the way toward a new American century.”

Rubio’s remarks came as Clinton traveled to Iowa on her first trip as a candidate.

Her entrance into the race

with an online video Sunday is robbing some attention from Rubio’s splash into the race.

But Rubio saw an opportunity to cast the presidential contest as one between a fresh face representing a new generation of leadership and familiar faces harking back decades – namely, the 62-yearold Bush and the 67-year-old Clinton.

“While our people and economy are pushing the boundaries of the 21st century, too many of our leaders and their ideas are stuck in the 20th century,” Rubio said to applause.

The swipe at Bush was implied; with Clinton, he was more direct.

“Just yesterday, a leader from yesterday began a campaign for president by promising to take us back to yesterday,” Rubio said to jeers.

“Yesterday is over, and we are never going back.”

Supporters began lining up in 87-degree heat three hours before the public kickoff at Freedom Tower, the Miami landmark that was the first stop for tens of thousands of fleeing Cuban exiles during the 1960s and 1970s.

There have been many comments about our new Village Hall for some time. It is with much thought and care that it is necessary for me to write.

Some say our Village Hall is pretentious.

Some residents call it the “Taj Mahal.” The architects and leaders of this building had a transparent foresight of our growth for the future. It is now, with our growth, that the building can become a grass-roots home for all of the Romeoville residents. It is outstanding with a grandiose structure.

Our first Village Hall was literally a chicken coop. Our second Village Hall was built on 135thh Street, from 1895 to 1960, between New Avenue and the I&M Canal.

Our third Village Hall was on Montrose near our Memorial Park. As the saying goes, “We have come a long way.”

It is appropriate we support our leaders, who had the courage to display their allegiance and direction that this building illustrates.

I am proud to call our new Village Hall home. Ignorance is gone. We are all sensitive to our growth. We are proud of our historical past and the residents who paved the way.

Our new Village Hall is a beacon and a legacy with a firm foundation that we leave our next generation with pride and dignity. Our Village Hall eventually will be totally utilized.

On a somber Lincoln anniversary, recalling his words On this day 150 years ago, John Wilkes Booth sneaked into Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C., and shot President Abraham Lincoln.

About nine hours later, Lincoln – perhaps the greatest president this country ever has seen and a man deservedly revered in Illinois – was dead.

Days earlier, on April 9, 1865, the North had won the Civil War. A little more than a month before that – March 4, 1865 – Lincoln delivered his second inaugural address. Delivered from the steps of the U.S. Capitol, it is recognized as one of the most remarkable pieces of political prose ever written.

Today, to honor Lincoln on this somber anniversary, we republish the text of that speech: “At this second appearing to take the oath of the presidential office, there is less occasion for an extended address than there was at the first. Then a statement, somewhat in detail, of a

course to be pursued, seemed fitting and proper. Now, at the expiration of four years, during which public declarations have been constantly called forth on every point and phase of the great contest which still absorbs the attention, and engrosses the energies of the nation, little that is new could be presented. The progress of our arms, upon which all else chiefly depends, is as well known to the public as to myself; and it is, I trust, reasonably satisfactory and encouraging to all.

With high hope for the future, no prediction in regard to it is ventured.

“On the occasion corresponding to this four years ago, all thoughts were anxiously directed to an impending civil war. All dreaded it – all sought to avert it. While the inaugural address was being delivered from this place, devoted altogether to saving the Union without war, insurgent agents were in the city seeking to destroy it without war – seeking to dissolve the

Union, and divide effects, by negotiation. Both parties deprecated war; but one of them would make war rather than let the nation survive; and the other would accept war rather than let it perish. And the war came.

“One eighth of the whole population were colored slaves, not distributed generally over the Union, but localized in the Southern part of it. These slaves constituted a peculiar and powerful interest. All knew that this interest was, somehow, the cause of the war. To strengthen, perpetuate, and extend this interest was the object for which the insurgents would rend the Union, even by war; while the government claimed no right to do more than to restrict the territorial enlargement of it.

Neither party expected for the war, the magnitude, or the duration, which it has already attained. Neither anticipated that the cause of the conflict might cease with, or even before, the conflict itself should cease. Each looked for an eas-

ier triumph, and a result less fundamental and astounding.

“Both read the same Bible, and pray to the same God; and each invokes His aid against the other. It may seem strange that any men should dare to ask a just God’s assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men’s faces; but let us judge not that we be not judged. The prayers of both could not be answered; that of neither has been answered fully. The Almighty has his own purposes. ‘Woe unto the world because of offences! For it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!’

“If we shall suppose that American slavery is one of those offences which, in the providence of God, must needs come, but which, having continued through His appointed time, He now wills to remove, and that He gives to both North and South, this terrible war, as the woe due to those by whom the offence came, shall we discern

therein any departure from those divine attributes which the believers in a living God always ascribe to Him? “Fondly do we hope – fervently do we pray – that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Youthful Bolingbrook defeats Lincoln-Way West

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – With just three seniors and one junior on its roster, Bolingbrook’s softball team is young compared to other SouthWest Suburban Conference squads.

But the Raiders didn’t play like a bunch of youngsters during Monday’s home game with Lincoln-Way West.

Bolingbrook got some key hits when it needed them and made several clutch plays in the field to help it claim a 4-1 nonconference victory over the Warriors.

“We have a lot of new faces,” Raiders coach Jean Ryan-Moak said. “I only have three seniors and two returning starters. Our outfield and our third baseman are freshmen, and our catcher and shortstop are sophomores, so we have a lot of young blood out here, but they’re go-getters. They’re good little players, and they’re going to have a

good four years.

“Megan [Lotarski] is one of our seniors, and she kept her composure on the mound.

Three strikeouts is lower than what she’s used to, but she did a nice job of keeping the ball low, with a lot of ground balls hit back to her, and Gianna [Esposito] did a nice job at second. In the fourth inning, our bats came alive, and we got runners and hits when we needed them.”

Winning pitcher Lotarski finished with a three-hitter after not allowing the Warriors (5-5) to get a hit until Dani Morgan (2 for 4) led off the sixth with a clean single to center.

West threatened in the fourth after getting its first two runners on after errors, but Lotarski got out of the jam with a fly out, a pop-up and a strikeout. The Raiders (5-4) scored four times in the bottom of that inning to take control.

Bolingbrook collected five hits, including four with two outs, to score all of its runs in the fourth. Senior Jen Jacobson started things with a oneout infield hit; and after West pitcher Amanda Ruskowsky coaxed a pop-up, Lotarski singled to center, and Nicole Bond got a hit to right to load the bases.

Katrina Yep (2 for 3) followed with an infield hit that scored a run, and another came home on an error. Then Zielinski doubled to center to bring in two more runs.

“They got runners in scoring position and scored four runs with two outs,” Warriors coach Heather Novak said.

“They did a good job of coming up with those big hits when they needed to, and unfortu-

nately we didn’t have those hits when we needed them.

We have a number of people returning, so in every game we’re looking to come out here and get better, and we’re going to continue to get better as the season goes along.”

Morgan led off the Warriors’ sixth with a single, and second baseman Esposito alertly fielded a grounder that went off Jacobson’s glove for the first out.

Emily Ray reached on a twoout, two-base error that scored Morgan. Rachel Andrade followed with a single, and Kayla Seymour walked, but Lotarski coaxed a grounder to Esposito to end the threat.

“I thought that everyone played defense really well, and when they had people on base, we were able to get them out, which was good,” Esposito said. “I know that we’re young, but once we start getting together, I think we’ll be a really good team. I like how everyone steps up in ways that help us.”

Lewis places third: The No. 7 Flyers collected four first-place finishes and two NCAA provisional showings to place third at the Benedictine Eagle Invitational on Saturday.

Chantel Stennis won two events including an NCAA provisional mark in the 100-meter dash (11.87) and as a member of the 4x100 relay (47.38) with Kayla King, Megan Marchildon and Amber Cook. Amanda Farrough picked up an NCAA provisional and a victory in the 800-meter run (2:17.15).

Marchildon added a runner-up finish in the 100-meter hurdles (15.12); Amy Polhemus was second in the 400-meter hurdles (1:02.86). The Flyers (99 points) also got a second-place high jump of 1.60 meters (5 feet, 3 inches) from Eva Poznanski.

PREP BASEBALL: JOLIET CATHOLIC 2, MINOOKA 0

By DICK GOSS MINOOKA – When Drake Fellows has extra incentive and the wind is blowing straight in, chances are the opposing offense will struggle to score.

That was the case Monday afternoon when Fellows pitched Joliet Catholic to a 2-0 nonconference victory over Minooka.

Fellows started against the Indians in the championship game of the WJOL Tournament in 2014 and worked seven scoreless innings, but Minooka wound up winning, 1-0, in 10 innings. He had not forgotten.

“We finally beat them for once,” Fellows said. “I’ve been waiting to pitch against them again.”

This time, Fellows limited Minooka (3-9) to two hits while striking out eight in six innings. He threw 85 pitches.

“With the wind blowing in like it was, I knew I just had to execute,” Fellows said. “It was hard for anybody to hit today.”

Before the game, JCA coach Jared Voss informed catcher Nick Dalesandro he probably would make his 2015 debut on the mound. He pitched the seventh inning and retired the side in order, striking out two.

“Coach and I talked about it last night,” Dalesandro said. “I threw a bullpen a couple days ago, so this was my second time on the mound. But I have a lot of experience doing it.”

Dalesandro said he anticipates starting a game next week and throwing “maybe 5060 pitches max.”

“Nick was pumped up out there,” Voss said. “We’re right around where we had planned to be with him as far as pitching goes. When he threw the bullpen, we knew he was close.

It’s not like he’s a fish out of water out there.

“We’re not going to have him throw 90 pitches or anything next week, but we’re set up to where he can start Wednesday conference games through May. We usually have Thursdays off, so we won’t be putting him back behind the plate the day after he starts on

JCA (9-2) had difficulty generating offense against Minooka senior right-hander Cristian Sanchez, who pitched for the first time since his freshman year. He blanked the Hilltoppers on one hit through three innings and allowed two runs on five hits in six innings.

“Cristian looked pret ty good,” Indians coach Jeff Petrovic said. “His offspeed stuff was not great, but he was able to keep them off balance.

That’s a credit to his competitiveness and his athletic nature. He’s got some guts. He gave us a chance today.”

In the midst of a stretch where the Indians are playing 10 games in nine days, including junior varsity games, and with Joe Butler sidelined with a thumb injury for about a month, Petrovic is looking for arms.

“Cristian [Sanchez] pitched well enough that he may be called on several more times

this season,” he said. “Where he fits in will be determined later. It’s no fluke that he pitched well. He’s just a good baseball player.”

Dalesandro broke the scoreless tie in the fourth when he singled, stole second, moved to third on Fellows’ sacrifice and scored on a fielder’s choice as freshman shortstop Hayden Laczynski, playing in on the edge of the grass, dove and snagged Connor Brandon’s hot grounder.

But his throw home was too late to get Dalesandro.

JCA added a run in the sixth when KC Simonich rapped his second single and scored on Brandon’s two-out double to deep center field.

“The ball explodes off Connor’s bat,” Voss said.

“With the wind, I wasn’t looking to do anything big,” Brandon said. “But it happened to work out. I get a lot of chances to put the team on top hitting in our lineup.”

When Fellows pitches, not many runs are needed.

“Drake brings his best stuff every day,” Brandon said. “He is something special.”

“Fellows has a pretty special arm,” Petrovic said. “We

don’t run into that very often.

I don’t know that it makes us better on a daily basis to face someone like him, but it can’t hurt.

“We’ve proven lately that we at least can compete.”

Minooka’s only hits against Fellows and Dalesandro were Jon Vesper’s single up the middle in the second inning and Laczynski’s infield hit in the third. The Indians had one baserunner after the third inning, when Zach Earls was hit by a pitch in the fifth.

Minooka second baseman Jake Null, the leadoff hitter, was back in the lineup for the first time since he injured a knee in a spill at first base in Wednesday’s game against Plainfield North.

“Jake wasn’t slated to go today, but he’s a competitive kid,” Petrovic said.

Minooka was without right fielder Nick Clemmons, whose father, Mark, passed away. A moment of silence was held in his memory before the game, and Petrovic talked with the Indians afterward about being there for their teammate.

“One thing I always preach is that we’re a family,” Petrovic said. “Nick will need us.”

Patrick Kane close to return Lincoln-Way West in time for start of playoffs beats Bolingbrook

By MATT CARLSON The Associated Press CHICAGO – It was the most important “pushing and shoving” of the season for the Blackhawks.

Patrick Kane was cleared Monday for contact and practiced with the team. The dynamic winger, who broke his collarbone in February, then received medical clearance to play in Game 1 of the playoffs Wednesday night in Nashville.

“Patrick has been working extremely diligently with his rehabilitation and has recently returned to full-contact practice without any difficulty,” team physician Dr. Michael Terry said in a news release. “After discussions with

Patrick and the team, and examining Patrick today, we collectively feel it is appropriate, with minimal risk, for him to return to full participation.”

Kane wasn’t hit hard in practice but said he nearly is ready for the physical demands of a game. After he had surgery Feb. 25, Terry said a full recovery would take “approximately 12 weeks.”

“I wouldn’t necessarily call that contact,” he said of Monday’s skate. “It was more like pushing and shoving.”

Kane missed the final 21 games of the season, and the All-Star still finished second on the team with 27 goals and 64 points. He was a candidate for the Hart Trophy for NHL MVP when he was hurt in the first period of a 3-2 shootout

win Feb. 24 over Florida.

“We’ll see how he does again tomorrow,” coach Joel Quenneville said long before the Blackhawks issued the statement with Terry’s comments. “I thought he had real good progress today. He got cleared for contact and handled everything pretty well.”

So could Kane be in the lineup Wednesday?

“Yeah, he could,” Quenneville said.

Also speaking before Terry’s statement, Kane said his return hinges on getting medical clearance.

“I feel pretty good,” he said.

“Obviously itching to play.

Any hockey player who would be in this situation where you’re off for almost seven weeks (would be).”

Kyle Cunningham delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning as St. Francis rallied from a 7-0 deficit to defeat Purdue Calumet, 8-7, in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference action Sunday at Silver Cross Field.

Zach Barkdull doubled with two outs and no one on in the ninth. Cunningham singled to bring home Jackson Schnieders with the winning run for the Saints (16-18, 12-4).

Matt Scott was 4 for 4 and two RBIs, while Cunningham was 3 for 5 with two RBIs. Dan Darling (1-2) earned his first win.

Lewis splits: Lewis split a doubleheader Sunday to take three of four at Illinois-Springfield this weekend. The Flyers won Game 1, 5-3, and fell in Game 2, 7-3.

The Flyers (14-17, 9-13) rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the opener. Kurt Becker had a bases-clearing triple to put Lewis up, 4-3. Ethan Bloom followed with a single to score Becker.

The Associated Press NEW YORK – Nikola Mirotic scored 26 points, Pau Gasol had 22 points and 11 rebounds, and the Bulls clinched homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs with a 113-86 victory Monday night over the Brooklyn Nets.

The Nets fell into ninth place in the Eastern Conference and will need a win Wednesday and a loss by Indiana in at least one of its final two games to reach the postseason.

Jimmy Butler shot 7 for 10 and scored 17 points for the Bulls, who moved a half-game ahead of Toronto into sole possession of third place in the East. They dominated the Nets for the third time this season.

Derrick Rose had 13 points and seven assists but only played 23 minutes because the Bulls already were too far ahead by the time he would’ve gone back for the fourth quarter.

That’s because Mirotic – the

rookie who has often done his best work in the final period – got it done one quarter earlier this time.

With the Bulls leading by 15 late in the third, he made a 3-pointer, then after two free throws by Joe Johnson, knocked down two more in a row with the crowd – filled with plenty of Bulls fans – cheering louder with each one in a scene reminiscent of Stephen Curry’s late comeback attempt in Golden State’s loss here.

Mirotic tried for four in a row, but his shot at the third-quarter buzzer was off the mark. No matter, as the Bulls were already ahead, 8765.

The Nets dropped their second in a row after a late-season surge had moved them up to seventh in the East. They close the regular season at home against Orlando.

Bojan Bogdanovic led the Nets with 17 points. Brooklyn shot 37 percent, with Deron Williams going 3 for 13.

Rose had 22 points, eight assists and six rebounds Saturday in a victory over Philadelphia, a performance that had both coaches Monday raving about his play in his third game back after knee surgery.

Rose looked good again, making two consecutive 3-pointers in the second quarter – credited with the second one after a video review – as the Bulls opened a 14-point lead. The Nets cut it in half and trailed, 57-50, at halftime.

Rose walked toward the scorer’s table with about 4½ minutes left, but after a chat with coach Tom Thibodeau returned to the bench.

Taj Gibson finished with 15 points and nine rebounds in place of starting center Joakim Noah, who was removed from the lineup shortly before the game with what the Bulls said was left hamstring tendinitis.

Gasol had his 53rd double-double, the most by a Bulls player since Charles Oakley had 53 in the 1986-87 season.

Lester roughed up, Cubs rally to win The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Jorge Soler homered twice and Arismendy Alcantara had a game-ending RBI single in the 10th inning to lift the Cubs to a 7-6 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night.

Chris Coghlan had three hits

and a homer as the Cubs came back from three runs down to overcome a rough start by Jon Lester, who gave up six runs and 10 hits in six innings as his ERA ballooned to 7.84.

Manny Parra (0-1) loaded the bases without getting an out in the bottom of the inning, and Alcantara singled with one out

against Burke Badenhop. It was Alcantara’s first hit of the season and his first career walk-off hit.

Brandon Phillips had four hits for the Reds, while Marlon Byrd and Jay Bruce each drove in two runs.

Baseball games have indeed been finishing faster this year.

The average nine-inning game took 2 hours, 56 minutes through Sunday night. That’s down from 3:03 through the first seven full days of the 2014 season, according to STATS.

“I have found a very cooperative attitude among the players, and I think that will serve us well over the long season,” new baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said Monday.

It’s hard to say how much of that decrease is because of Major League Baseball’s new emphasis on pace of play. Scor-

ing has been down, as well, so that could be part of the reason games are taking less time.

Baseball’s new rules require hitters to keep a foot in the batter’s box, with some exceptions. A clock now times inning breaks and pitching changes.

“I don’t think there have

been any significant issues that have popped up to where umpires have been having to play the policeman,” Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. “I think everybody sees the clock and therefore there’s some understanding just because of the clock, and hopefully that’s all it takes.”

‘I was going to have a mammogram’ Breast cancer not as common in men as in women, but does occur

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Hank Englehaupt, who lives between Seneca and Marseilles, never dreamed he’d hear his doctor give him a diagnosis of breast cancer.

But Englehaupt heard it in 2002. Now 71 – despite neuropathy in his feet from chemotherapy treatments, and the fact he still is alive to care for his 34-year-old disabled son – Englehaupt still believes breast cancer is a woman’s issue.

“They have it a lot more than men,” Englehaupt said.

Dr. Nafisa D. Burhani of Joliet Oncology-Hematology Associates began seeing Englehaupt for his follow-up visits in her Morris office in 2007.

Englehaupt’s cancer was at Stage 2B when he was diagnosed, Burhani said, meaning the cancer had spread to some lymph nodes.

Because most breast cancers in men have estrogen receptors, follow-up treatment includes Tamoxifen, which blocks estrogen’s effects on their cells, Burhani said. Women whose breast cancer also is positive for estrogen also take Tamoxifen, Burhani added.

Englehaupt took Tamoxifen for five years, the recommendation at the time, Burhani said. Some clinical trials now suggest patients do better at the 15-year mark if they take Tamoxifen for 10 years, Burhani added.

Burhani sends Englehaupt for periodic mammograms, since he does have some breast tissue left, but overall, she is not concerned about a recurrence.

“He’s done very well,” Burhani said.

According to the American Cancer Society at www. cancer.org, breast cancer is about 100 times more common among women than men, with a lifetime risk of 1 in 1,000.

Those statistics have not changed in 30 years.

Risk factors include aging; family history; mutations in the BRCA2 (lifetime risk of 6 in 100) and BRCA1 (lifetime risk of 1 in 100); certain congenital conditions; testicular disorders; obesity; heavy alcohol use; liver disease; and past estrogen treatments, according to the American Cancer Society.

Still, preventative screenings have no known benefit for men and generally are not recommended. One reason, Rao said, is because cancer is readily found in men because they have less breast tissue than women, making tumors easily seen and felt.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is about 100 times more common among women than men, with a lifetime risk of 1 in 1,000. Those statistics have not changed in 30 years.

However, less breast tissue also means less supportive tissue, so the cancer may attach itself to the chest wall, Rao said. This means a mastectomy usually is the only way to remove all of the cancer, she added.

Lymph node evaluation is the same for men and women, Rao said, and treatment is based on those findings. Reconstruction surgery is available for men, but none of Rao’s patients ever has requested it,

Rao added.

As with women, early detection is key to survival. Men with breast cancer may notice a hard nodule, like a hard pea, Rao said, in their breast. The nodule is not generally painful, she added.

“Because men often tend to be bare-chested,” Rao said, “they do notice and take care of it.”

Englehaupt noticed his nodule in May 2002 when he was at work and carrying a

stack of tall boxes outside. He felt discomfort in his right breast where the boxes leaned against his chest. So he set the boxes down and pressed on the area, but he felt nothing.

“About the middle of June, I could feel something about the size of a BB,” Englehaupt said. “I thought, ‘I have a doctor’s appointment in August.

I’ll talk to him then.’ ” At the appointment, Englehaupt said his general practitioner also felt the lump and told Englehaupt he was sending him to the hospital for some pictures. Englehaupt said he assumed “pictures” meant standard X-rays.

Englehaupt said he didn’t understand why he was the only man sitting in a waiting room of women, and why those women didn’t appear happy he was there. Finally, his name was called, and he followed the technician to the imaging room.

“She told me I was going to have a mammogram,” Englehaupt said. “I said, ‘Whoa!

Wait a minute.’ ” Next, Englehaupt had an ultrasound for an intensified look at the nodule. A subsequent biopsy diagnosed it as cancer. Englehaupt never returned to work, because of shortness of breath and severe neuropathy in his feet, which he believes was caused by the radiation and chemotherapy.

Still, Englehaupt considers himself lucky. He’s since learned about two other men who died from breast cancer.

Although his cancer treatments caused severe fatigue and joint pain, Englehaupt said he never required a blood transfusion, which he attributes to the red wine he makes and drinks.

Englehaupt said one oncologist even was impressed with the results of his routine blood tests.

“He said, ‘My God, you must have a marrow factory in your bones,’ ” Englehaupt said.

Autism awareness group raising funds to build playground The HERALD-NEWS COAL CITY – Autism now affects 1 in every 68 children in the United States.

Hope Helps, a nonprofit autism awareness organization serving Will and Grundy counties, has begun the planning process of building “Hope Helps Special Needs, Sensory Playground” in Coal

City.

This facility will contain a main play structure that includes multiple slides, climbers and tunnels as well as sensory components throughout, including a bell station, bongos, periscope and zoo station.

Alongside of the main structure will be multiple American Disability Act-cer-

tified freestanding pieces of equipment including Sway Fun, Zip Krooze Assisted, High Backed and Harnessed Swings, Sensory Wall and Pulse Sensory Game.

Along with all the equipment, the play facility will be housed on a pulverized rubber surfacing so people with wheelchairs or walkers or individuals with poor mobili-

ty can access play equipment safely and easily.

The facility will be fenced in to enhance safety for all, as well as housing a few handicapped parking places and extra-wide sidewalks leading directly to the playground.

The projected cost is $300,000.

5K Run/Walk for pulmonary hypertension support effort The HERALD-NEWS The Pulmonary Hypertension Association’s Midwest Chapter and CVS Health are hosting the fourth annual CVS Health Stride for a Cure O2 Breathe Quarter Marathon Run and Walk on May 3 in support of pulmonary hypertension at Busse Woods Forest Preserve in Elk Grove Village.

Pulmonary hypertension is high blood pressure in the lungs. PH is a chronic and life-changing disease of the heart and lungs that can strike at any age and rapidly leads to heart failure if left untreated.

People with PH experience shortness of breath, dizziness and loss of energy.

Diagnosis of PH often takes years, during which patients often are misdiagnosed.

Half of patients who do not receive the correct treatment survive only 2.8 years. By the time individuals finally are diagnosed, a majority of patients have reached the advanced stages of the disease.

In bridge, the first card played in a suit gives some information, but sometimes the second provides the key piece of data – as in this deal. How should the defenders card to try to defeat four spades after West leads his fourth-highest diamond?

South opened with a textbook vulnerable three-bid: a good seven-card suit and 6-10 high-card points. North knew that his partner might lose the first four tricks, but maybe the game would be laydown, or West might find a losing lead (perhaps a singleton heart).

West chose to lead from his stronger minor.

East could see that his side had to take four minor-suit tricks; either three diamonds (West led from queen-fourth of diamonds) and one club, or two diamonds and two clubs.

First, after winning with his diamond king (low from touching honors when playing third hand high), East cashed the diamond ace. When West followed suit with his two, it told East that West had led from a five-card suit.

Then, needing two club tricks, what did East do?

If West had the club king, it wouldn’t matter, but in case West had only the queen, East shifted to his club two. Then he waited to see if South would guess correctly.

Finally, note that if West had led from a four-card diamond suit, he would have played a diamond higher than the five at trick two. Then East would have cashed his club ace before leading his last diamond.

Breathing exercises can help maintain your lung capacity. If you smoke, quitting should be a priority. If you can’t take in a deep breath because of this disease, adding lung damage from smoking puts you at greater risk for severe breathing problems and pneumonia.

In people with ankylosing spondylitis, stiffness often improves with activity. Regular exercise can help prevent the disorder from getting worse.

A physical therapist can develop an exercise routine to help the spine remain flexible. The routine probably will include range-of-motion and stretching exercises. Abdominal and back exercises can help you maintain good posture so you are less likely to stoop. Swimming is a good exercise because it may be easier to move stiff, painful areas in the water. Biking is another good option.

Hot baths, heat and massage can help to relieve pain. Try to sleep on your back on a firm mattress. Use a small pillow or none at all.

Many medications can help to reduce joint pain and inflammation.

These include anti-inflammatory drugs and pain relievers. The FDA also has approved TNF blockers to treat ankylosing spondylitis. These blockers are powerful new drugs that block the activity or production of TNF, a substance in the body that causes inflammation. Usually, surgery is not needed.

Dear Dr. K: I have ankylosing spondylitis. Can you discuss this condition and the best way to treat it?

Dear Reader: Ankylosing spondylitis is a form of arthritis in which the spine and other joints become inflamed and stiff.

A person with this condition usually feels pain or stiffness in the lower back, especially in the morning or after inactivity. Pain tends to begin in the two joints between the spine and the pelvis (the sacroiliac joints) and be felt in the buttocks. It then works its way up the lower spine. Eventually, the disorder can affect the entire spine and can cause discomfort in the torso and legs. Symptoms may alternately improve and worsen.

As the spine and its support structures stiffen, a person may begin to stoop over. The stoop can become very severe. With time, the bones of the spine can fuse or grow together. This causes an extremely stiff, rigid backbone. (I’ve put an X-ray image of a spine affected by ankylosing spondylitis on my website, askdoctork.com.)

In addition to the spine and joints of the chest, ankylosing spondylitis can inflame the hip joints and fingers and toes.

People with the disease also appear to be at greater risk for developing inflammation elsewhere in the body: the eyes (a condition called uveitis), the intestines (inflammatory bowel disease) and the inflammatory skin disease called psoriasis.

Pain and rigidity in the lower back can cause extreme pain and problems walking. At some point, a back brace or other device, such a corset, cane or joint splints, may help.

A rigid spine and stiff joints between the ribs and breastbone may make it harder for the chest to expand. As a

Dear Abby: My husband, “Rory,” and I both come from close families. Whenever something is wrong, troublesome, etc., in either of our families, we have meetings where the entire immediate family comes together.

The problem is, I am not invited to his. It’s not like I’m a recent addition to this family. Rory and I dated for 15 years before getting married.

My family started inviting him to our meetings after we had dated for a year, including discussions about my dad losing his job, my brother’s stint in rehab and more.

Rory’s family has had lots of similar meetings, but I am excluded because I am not a blood relative. Even when my husband lost his job, I was not invited to attend. I was left sitting out in the hallway with the children and the boyfriend of one of his other siblings.

I am Rory’s wife.

Shouldn’t I be allowed in on the family discussions now that we’re married, especially ones that center on my husband? Am I overreacting because I’m so angry about this? How can I overcome this exclusion from his family? –
