JOLIET – Lockport remains on schedule to launch its electronics recycling drop-off location in early May, but convincing other communities to rejoin Will County’s dismantled program continues to be an uphill battle.

That’s according to Marta Keane, recycling specialist for the county, who updated the Will County Board’s Legislative and Policy Committee on Tuesday.

In the meantime, Keane and other stakeholders are working on new state legislation that might be introduced to address Illinois’ flawed electronics recycling law, she said.

Electronics have been banned from landfills in Illinois since 2012, and under the current state law, manufacturers that sell products in Illinois must recycle a certain weight of what is sold and

pay to have those items collected and recycled.

The state law was designed so manufacturers picked up the tab, but local governments in recent months have lost the financial support of manufacturers in a low-priced market for recycled electronics and rising demand.

Although they still are in draft form, changes to the law would create a separate quasi-governmental body to oversee the system and dedicate dollars from Illinois’ solid waste fund for local government programs, Keane told the board.

The changes also would allow electronics retailers to charge a nominal fee – maybe $2 or $3, Keane said – per electronic item with a screen to be set aside to fund the program.

Right now, manufacturers are barred by state law from adding a recycling fee to products.

“If manufacturers aren’t going to pay into the program and push work on the

local governments, then we are going to need a bigger pot of money,” Keane said.

“It’s controversial,” she added. “…

Dean Olson, who heads the county’s resource recovery and energy division, said manufacturers are contracting with low-priced out-of-state recyclers – most of which require local governments to take up labor-intensive responsibilities at drop-off sites, such as stacking, packing and loading items into trailers.

Will County’s former vendor – Plainfield-based Vintage Tech – did all that work before it bowed out of its contract prematurely, citing an unsustainable market. The county’s new vendor – Electronic Recyclers International, based out of Plainfield, Indiana – was the only bidder that responded earlier this year.

“When we get this program back up and running, it will not be the same program,” Keane said.

National used car firm eyes vacant Century Tile site

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – DriveTime, a national used car company that targets hard-to-finance customers, plans to move into a vacant spot on Larkin Avenue.

The car dealership wants to open later this year at the vacant Century Tile site at 1395 N. Larkin Ave., a city official said.

First, DriveTime needs to get a special-use permit required for all used car lots, said James Haller, director of community and economic development for Joliet.

The Zoning Board of Appeals is scheduled to consider the permit at its April 21 meeting.

DriveTime is an Arizona-based company that describes itself on its website as “the nation’s largest dealer helping people with credit issues purchase a great vehicle.”

The company would open the Joliet location in November at the earliest, according to an email from a spokesperson.

JOLIET MONTESSORI SCHOOL EDUCATING TODDLERS School seeks to encourage new members of its community

fsarver@shawmedia.com CREST HILL — A new Joliet Montessori School program is educating parents and their toddlers while also introducing them to the private school’s curriculum.

Plainfield resident Emily Napoleon and her 2½-year-old son participate in the school’s parent-toddler class – where, once a week, parents or caregivers and their children can experience a Montessori classroom.

Montessori schools focus on handson experience and self-directed exploration for students.

Napoleon said one of her favorite moments was seeing the happy look

on her son’s face as he squeezed water into a bowl.

“He was learning how to do it himself. It was just a really cool moment,” she said.

Pouring, using spoons, moving water, carrying trays and other practical life activities are part of the parent-toddler class, said Heather Bonacorda, head of school at Joliet Montessori School. Students also learn grace and courtesy – as they would in other classes – such as how to walk carefully and how to speak.

Toddlers in the class learn these concepts in an environment that’s comfortable for them, Bonacorda said.

Joliet police now looking at Evergreen Terrace legal bills Attorney calls investigation ‘ridiculous’

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet police are investigating city payments made to a private law firm, which could be considering ending its 11-year legal representation of the city in the Evergreen Terrace case.

Police Chief Brian Benton said his department has been asked by the city’s inspector general to investigate whether any crimes were committed by city employees or the law firm.

New Inspector General Chris Regis and Mayor Bob O’Dekirk last month released a report critical of the city’s handling of Evergreen Terrace. Both Regis and O’Dekirk, who has been critical of the city’s attempts to condemn and take over the low-income housing complex since his days as a councilman, said then that they may seek a criminal investigation into rate increases by the law firm over the course of the case.

At the time, however, O’Dekirk said the city would consider seeking an investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office or the Illinois Attorney General’s Office.

Neither O’Dekirk or Regis could be reached for comment Tuesday.

Benton said his department is investigating the situation based on a request from the inspector general. He said Joliet police have been asked to “look into any criminal conduct” in the handling of Evergreen Terrace.

“Our goal is to gather information through the investigation to look at activity by the employees and the firm to see how it got to the situation it’s at now,” Benton said.

Figliulo & Silverman, the law firm that has represented Joliet in the Evergreen Terrace matter, has been paid $5.5 million since the start of the case.

According to Regis, rate increases accounted for $657,000 of that total.

O’Dekirk and Regis contend that any rate increase should have been

presented to the City Council for approval. The law firm said all of its rates were listed in bills approved for payment by the city as recently as February.

James Figliulo, one of the lead attorneys in the Evergreen Terrace case, confirmed Monday that his firm late last week sent a letter to the city manager and city attorney but would not discuss what is in it.

Asked whether the firm planned to withdraw from the case, Figliulo said, “It depends.” He would not elaborate.

He previously has said it would be “very difficult” for the firm to continue to represent the city unless there was an understanding reached and statement made from the city that the billing was properly done.

Figliulo called the police investigation into the payments “ridiculous.”

“It’s incredulous to me for anybody in the city to suggest there was anything that was not ratified by the City Council,” Figliulo said. “As a matter of law, the City Council payment of the fees was a ratification of our fees, especially after receiving the benefit

of our services.”

City Manager Jim Hock at one point Tuesday said he would release the letter from Figliulo & Silverman.

Later, he sent The Herald-News an email saying he could not release the letter because of the police investigation.

Several City Council members, meanwhile, said they were not aware of a police investigation into the matter or of the letter sent last week by the law firm.

Councilman Pat Mudron, however, said the possibility of Figliulo & Silverman withdrawing from the case had been discussed before the inspector general’s report.

“I know there was a question before that these guys are going to be very unhappy when they read the report, and they’re going to say, ‘We’re done,’ which, to me, is a mistake on our part because we’re not done with the lawsuit yet,” Mudron said.

Evergreen Terrace owners have appealed previous federal court decisions giving the city ownership of the housing complex.

Will sheriff sends Lincoln-Way D-210 report to another agency

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A report from complainants alleging financial fraud against Lincoln-Way High School District 210 was referred to another agency, but Will County Sheriff’s Office can’t say which.

“It’s out of our hands, and pretty much that’s about all I can say about it,” said Kathy Hoffmeyer, sheriff’s office spokeswoman.

Hoffmeyer said previously the Will County Sheriff’s Office took a report the week before April 4 from two complainants alleging financial fraud against Lincoln-Way. She wrote in an email the next day that the sheriff’s office referred the complaint “to the appropriate authorities” and that the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office has been notified of the action.

A Freedom of Information Act request sent to the sheriff’s office for any and all reports or documents regarding Lincoln-Way between March 1 and April 4 was denied Monday because the matter is the subject of an ongoing investigation and therefore exempt from copying and inspection.

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – A Chicago public accounting firm is set to present findings from an agreed-upon procedures examination of bond issues for Lincoln-Way High School District 210 at Thursday’s board meeting.

Representatives of Crowe Horvath will present a comprehensive examination of May 2006, February 2007 and December 2009 bond issues, according a statement attributed to board President Dee Molinare.

The statement was sent to media Tuesday afternoon by Taryn Atwell, the district’s new community relations director.

Unite – a resident group that also is a private corporation – is suing the board to prevent North from closing. A Will County judge dismissed the group’s first complaint and later denied its motion for a temporary restraining order to prevent North from closing.

A hearing on a second renewed motion for a preliminary injunction to prevent North’s closing, from LWATU attorney Stephen Eberhardt, is scheduled for April 21, and a hearing on the group’s second amended complaint will be May 20.

The district’s attorneys filed a motion Friday to dismiss the second amended complaint.

Ann Jenkins, a North parent, authored a petition posted on Change. org asking the sheriff’s office, state’s attorney’s office and Illinois Attorney General’s Office to launch a formal investigation into financial practices of the Lincoln-Way board, administration and foundation.

The petition exceeded its original goal of 1,000 signatures and, as of Tuesday, had 1,082 of the 1,500 signatures it now is seeking. Jenkins said evidence of suspected financial wrongdoing would be presented to law enforcement along with the petition.

Lawsuit filed over woman who died locked in clinic

aschier@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A South Wilmington woman has filed a lawsuit against several defendants after her elderly, sick and wheelchair-bound mother was locked inside a Joliet clinic for hours on Halloween night 2015 and died the next day.

Patricia D. Sistek filed the lawsuit April 6 on behalf of her mother, Patricia L. Terry, in Will County court.

“We are devastated. Our mother was a career nurse, and she was very proud of her profession. She was always an advocate for her patients,” Sistek said in a news release from her attorney.

“DaVita abandoned her in an empty waiting room on Halloween.”

Terry, 71, a resident of Alden Estates of Shorewood, received kidney dialysis Oct. 31 at DaVita Renal Center West Joliet, 1051 Essington Road.

Joliet police were called to check the office about 11:45 p.m. after it was discovered a Kurtz Ambulance Service vehicle had not brought her back to Al-

Terry was transported to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead the evening of Nov. 1.

Will County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil said it eventually was concluded that Terry died of natural causes, so O’Neil’s office did not take jurisdiction of the case.

According to a legal document provided by Sistek’s lawyer, Terry’s death was from a heart attack caused by her being left at DaVita.

The news release stated that before her death, Terry had been diagnosed with renal failure and needed dialysis, which she received from DaVita three times a week.

The news release also stated that DaVita was responsible for abandoning Terry in the clinic. According to the news release, her treatment ended at 7:10 p.m., after which she was wheeled into the clinic waiting room, where she remained for hours, well after DaVita staff left through the back door about 8:45 p.m.

DaVita staff contend they called Kurtz Ambulance Service to arrange Terry’s transportation, the news release stated, but Kurtz claims it received no such call.

“Patients choose their own transportation providers,” Kevin Downey, senior manager of communications for DaVita Healthcare Partners Inc., said in a statement. “After leaving our treatment floor, the patient was not picked up by the transportation service. Our phone logs reflect that we called the

JOLIET – A festival to honor Cesar Chavez and Latino culture will be held Thursday at the new Joliet Central High School Student Center.

The free event, called the Si Se Puede Festival – or “yes we can,” in Spanish – promises to educate the public about civil rights leader Cesar Chavez and offer entertainment, dancing, music, activities, food and the unveiling of a portrait of Chavez that was donated to Joliet School District 204.

The event will begin 4 p.m. Thursday at the school, 201 E. Jefferson St. Jeff Grimes, Central Spanish teacher, said that when the portrait was donated, he did not just want to see it hung up. He wanted a celebration, since the majority of the students at Central are Latino.

“We wanted to educate our students about Cesar Chavez and also the community, and we wanted to celebrate who we are,” he said.

Chavez is the famous Latino-American civil rights activist who coined the phrase “Si se puede.”

Child discovers fire while coming home in New Lenox

bokon@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – A child coming home discovered a house on fire Monday in the 2700 block of Tanaga Basin in New Lenox.

No one was injured in the fire, which was reported at 2:57 p.m., said Marisa Schrieber, public information officer with the New Lenox Fire Pro-

tection District.

The fire was discovered by a child who lives at the house and saw smoke while coming home, Schrieber said.

“The fire was under control in about 10 minutes,” she said.

Firefighters were on scene for about an hour. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Schrieber said.

Damage at the two-story, single-family house is estimated at $75,000.

Montessori schools don’t focus just on academics, but also the social and emotional needs of students, she said.

“Are they becoming the best possible person? Are we incorporating ways for them to gain independence?

Are we giving them all the tools they need to be strong individuals?” she said, listing examples of questions the school’s educators ask themselves.

The parent-toddler class began March 17 and runs for eight weeks.

JMS has plans to hold more sessions next school year.

Bonacorda said the parent-toddler class was created in response to the growth of enrollment and programming at Joliet Montessori School. She said its enrollment is at 84 students, 11 more than last June.

The parent-toddler class is a way for the Montessori school to “open our doors to more families.”

“It was a way for us to serve the needs of the community and at the same time allow us to bring those people in and become members of our community,” she said.

Joliet Montessori is a private school that has been serving children since 1966 and is registered with the Illinois State Board of Education.

JOLIET – The Forest Preserve District of Will County’s Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday to approve a $17 million bond refinancing measure estimated to save the district about $1.5 million in debt service costs.

The bonds were issued in 2008 with an average 5 percent interest rate. The new refunded bonds will have an estimated interest cost of 2.18 percent, according to a district news release.

The savings will be used to pay for costs associated with the district’s early retirement incentive program.

Finance Committee Chairman Ray Tuminello, R-New Lenox, said in the news release that the district will not have to borrow money to accomplish proposed capital projects.

“The Forest Preserve District is finding ways to use existing funds to get work done, which is a fiscally responsible strategy that I fully endorse,” he said in the release.

It is anticipated that the early retirement incentive program will provide a net savings of more than $2 million in salaries and benefits over the next five years, John Gerl, the district’s chief financial officer, said in the news release.

Currently, 13 employees – or 10 percent of district staff – have participated in the incentive program.

mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – If you’re running out of space for your outdated electronics, the Grundy County Land Use Department will take them off your hands.

Residents of Grundy County are invited to recycle their electronics from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Environtech Landfill, 1800 Ashley Road, Morris.

“This is the biggest event we have,” Grundy County Land Use Director Heidi Miller said. “We’re going to try to get everyone in and out as quickly as possible. Grundy County residents do a wonderful job recycling.”

Electronics are made from copper, quartz, plastic and other valuable resources and materials. Although there is a profit for the electronic recycling companies after they repurpose valuable materials, Miller said, the companies fill an important role as the go-between in creating another life for the materials. Pieces of a laptop from 10 years ago already may have made their way to another laptop.

“By recycling, you’re bringing resources back to where they started from,” Miller said.

Disposing electronics into the environment – like any other form of waste – not only is illegal, but studies show chemicals used to make electronics can travel through rainwater and into waterways. This poses a danger to wildlife and humans as they consume water.

According to EPA.gov, donating or recycling electronics conserves natural resources and avoids air and water pollution, as well as greenhouse gas emissions caused by manufactur-

ing virgin materials.

Miller said the Land Use Department regularly tests Environtech for chemical output and hasn’t uncovered electronic pollution issues.

“When materials come into contact with rainwater, chemicals can leach out into soils and expand,” Miller said. “We’re lucky. At Environtech, we don’t have that problem, but it happens in other areas.”

The money will be used to pay for the construction of Nelson Road, Carroll said, and also might fund drainage improvements in the Aerohaven subdivision.

The village plans to build out Nelson Road between Haven Avenue and Illinois Highway, and to relocate Nelson Road to the west, south of Illinois Highway.

The board will review bids for the Nelson Road work at its April 25 meeting, and then determine whether to move forward with the work on Aerohaven subdivision, before approving the bids and issuing the bonds.

NEW LENOX – New Lenox’s AMC theater soon will be serving up more than the standard soda and popcorn to moviegoers, after the Village Board voted unanimously Monday to allow the business to offer alcohol.

Village Administrator Kurt Carroll said trustees approved two ordinances – one amending the village municipal code regarding beer and wine in theaters and another creating a Class H liquor license for the AMC Showplace New Lenox 14. Both passed as part of the meeting’s consent agenda.

Carroll said Tuesday that the change is part of a $2 million renovation of the theater, 1320 W. Maple St., that will include the addition of larger seats to most of the screening rooms, an upgrade to concessions and a new bar area called MacGuffins Bar & Lounge.

“I think it’s going to be a great

experience for people,” Mayor Tim Baldermann said Tuesday.

The goal of the added amenities is to create the luxury of a home theater, according to Carroll, who said the revamp will reduce the overall number of seats at the Showplace, but improve the customer experience.

He said AMC will sell beer, wine and select mixed drinks.

The bar area, which will be limited to those who have bought a movie ticket, will check identification and only allow patrons to buy one drink at a time. Carroll did not know when the theater would begin serving alcohol.

Also on Monday’s consent agenda, trustees approved a Class J liquor license for Board & Brush, an art studio that will be located in Bluestone Commons, at 2401 E. Joliet Highway, and will sell wine and beer. The business will serve primarily as a space for painting parties, and it is expected to open soon, although village officials did not know specifics on

Annual telethon raises funds for Easter Seals

kschott@shawmedia.com JOLIET – When it comes to the annual Celebration of Giving Regional Telethon, Deb Strahanoski thinks it could hold its own with any national one you might have seen.

The yearly event, scheduled for Saturday, is the major fundraiser for Easter Seals Joliet Region. Strahanoski, development manager at Easter Seals, said the 12-hour telethon will be televised live on Comcast Channel 6 and will live stream at www.joliet.easterseals.com.

Between the 1,000 or so volunteers who pitch in, the local talent – from bands to dancers to hosts – and the families who receive services from the agency providing testimonials, Strahanoski said it is an event that Easter Seals looks forward to every year.

“It’s an event we just love, and we love that it is a day that people can sit back and enjoy,” she said. “And we thank the community from the bottom of our hearts.”

The show is split between two cities: From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., it will be at the

Kankakee Valley Park District Rec Center in Kankakee; and from 1 to 9 p.m., it will be at the Jacob Henry Mansion in Joliet.

Strahanoski said the event has been going on for more than two decades, and during that time it has raised more than $1 million for Easter Seals. The agency serves Ford, Grundy, Kankakee, Kendall, Iroquois and Will counties. Easter Seals helps people with disabilities and special needs, and their families, live better lives.

It takes about six months to pull together the event, she said. Between performances by local groups and bands, hosts ask those tuning in to call in, and volunteers manning phone banks record donations.

The goal is to raise $180,000 this year, Strahanoski said.

“We are feeling really good that we will – fingers crossed, of course – that we will exceed that,” she said.

“We appreciate every dollar we get,” Strahanoski said. “We are so grateful for people coming together and embracing our event to help us raise as much money as possible for all of our programs and services in our region.”

Bowl For Kids’ Sake strikes through Morris Saturday

mmallory@shawmedia.com Every year, April marks the month of the biggest fundraiser on Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will & Grundy Counties’ annual calendar.

The six bowling events are held on six different days in six different municipalities, and they include teams and individual bowlers that gather for Bowl For Kids’ Sake.

With every drop of a pin, bowlers aim to raise money toward the nonprofit’s 2016 goal of $100,000 to help serve local children.

This chapter of the national organization has been bowling for kids’ sake more than 30 years now, coordinator Jeannine Kubas said.

It’s not a secret why it’s been so successful.

“Bowling is fun,” Kubas said.

“It’s easy to do – just about any person, any age can do it.”

Although there was playful “smack talk” Sunday between police officer and firefighter bowling teams at the Lockport event, Kubas said it’s a family-friendly envi-

ronment. In fact, several lanes are used by the organization’s mentors and their youth counterparts, also known as “bigs” and “littles,” respectively.

Bowling ranging from families to teams from big companies – such as Harrah’s Casino and Presence Health – will be aiming for strikes.

“There’s a lot of elements that make it successful,” Kubas said.

“But the Big Brothers Big Sisters mission is endearing because everybody wants to help kids. The mentoring component alone shows a profound impact. Everybody would like to have a positive role model.”

In addition to friendly competition, sponsorship opportunities also are available. Funds acquired through sponsorships help Big Brothers Big Sisters match at-risk youth with caring adults so they can become confident, competent and caring individuals, according to a news release from Kubas.

Music producer David Gest dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS LONDON – David Gest, a music producer, reality TV star and former husband of Liza Minnelli, was found dead Tuesday at a London hotel. He was 62.

Gest’s friend Imad Handi confirmed his death, remembering Gest as “a natural star and a genuine celebrity.”

“David was truly larger than life. He was not just a huge talent and a dear friend but a showbiz icon,” Handi said.

The Metropolitan Police force said officers were called to “reports of an unexplained death of a man in his 60s” at the Four Seasons Hotel in London’s Canary Wharf on Tuesday morning.

The force said an autopsy would take place “in due course” to determine the cause of death, but it was not being treated as suspicious.

Born in 1953, Gest was raised in southern California, where he became friends with Michael Jackson and his family. He worked as a music promoter and television producer, and was introduced to Minnelli by Jackson when Gest produced the King of Pop’s 30th anniversary tribute concert for television in 2001.

The couple married in 2002, at a celebrity-studded ceremony with Jackson as best man and Elizabeth Taylor as maid of honor.

Ex-Astros, Giants GM Richardson dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS ATLANTA – Former Houston Astros and San Francisco Giants general manager H.B. “Spec” Richardson died Tuesday at the age of 93.

The Muscogee County coroner’s office confirmed Richardson died at his home in Columbus, Georgia, from natural causes.

Richardson was general manager of the Astros from 1967-75 and was the Giants’ GM from 1976-80.

Richardson is remembered for several major trades. In 1971 he traded Joe Morgan, Denis Menke, Jack Billingham and Cesar Geronimo to Cincinnati in exchange for a package of players that included first baseman Lee May. Morgan, Billingham and Geronimo became key players on the Reds’ championship teams.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS SPRINGFIELD – Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner released figures Tuesday detailing how much each Illinois school district would receive next year under his education budget, setting the stage for another battle with Democrats who have their own proposal.

The Illinois State Board of Education said the plan calls for increasing funding by $120 million, fully funding the general state aid to schools instead of prorating it like it’s been done the past seven years with the state struggling to balance its books.

The total budget for schools would be just over $10 billion for the fiscal year beginning July 1, but despite the additional support from the state, wealthy suburban school districts would see a drop in state aid.

The governor’s funding proposal comes a week after Democrats unveiled their own funding measure, which calls for overhauling the state’s nearly 20-year-old formula for sending money to schools. But both Rauner

CHICAGO – A Chicago City Council panel voted Tuesday to temporarily change the selection process for police superintendent so Mayor Rahm Emanuel can avoid the usual procedures and appoint a longtime member of the department as its next leader.

The council’s Committee on Public Safety recommended a change in the municipal code so that Emanuel can name interim Superintendent Eddie Johnson the next superintendent instead of picking from a list of finalists given to him by the city’s police board. The committee also was considering whether to recommend Johnson for the job, and a vote from the full council was expected Wednesday.

Agency proposes new anti-vaccinator certificate

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois health officials have proposed new rules requiring parents who don’t want their children to be vaccinated for religious reasons to provide a document to schools and child care facilities each year.

The Illinois Department of Public Health’s proposal comes in response to a law approved by the General Assembly last year, the Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers reported. The law created a “certificate of religious exemption” for children whose parents oppose vaccinations.

Under current law, a child’s health care provider is required to sign the certificate after reviewing with the child’s parent or guardian the benefits of vaccination and the health risks that it would mitigate. The certificate must be submitted to the school before the student enters kindergarten, sixth grade or ninth grade.

Staffers subpoenaed by court in Schock case

CHICAGO – Four congressional staffers have told the U.S. House that they’ve been subpoenaed by the federal court in Springfield, where a grand jury is conducting a probe into the spending of former U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock.

The financial chief for the House, Traci Beaubian, and three other staff members wrote letters notifying the chamber about the subpoenas that were read on the House floor Monday, the Chicago Tribune reported based on House records noting the letters were received and video of the letters being read. The letters did not mention the subject of the subpoenas.

Schock, the one-time rising GOP star from Peoria, came under intense scrutiny in early 2015 for his spending, including redecorating his office in the style of TV’s “Downton Abbey.” He left office in March 2015 amid questions about congressional and campaign spending.

Under state law, districts are supposed to get a minimum amount of state money per student. Additionally, some districts get additional funds for other things, such as serving high numbers of low-income students, and make up the rest with property taxes.

Among other things, Manar’s bill would change districts’ reliance on property taxes, taking local wealth more into account when distributing funds.

The Illinois Department of Public Health announced Tuesday that an Illinois resident died after contracting an infection from the bacterium Elizabethkingia.

The department’s been working with federal and state health officials to investigate the outbreak.

The Illinois resident who died was from the northern part of the state and had underlying health conditions.

Businessman pleads guilty in CPS kickbacks case

CHICAGO – A defendant in a Chicago Public Schools kickbacks case has changed his plea to guilty.

Thomas Vranas pleaded guilty Tuesday at a hearing in federal court in Chicago to one count of conspiracy to commit federal program bribery. He faces a maximum five years in prison.

He and co-defendant Gary Solomon were accused of arranging to pay then-head of CPS Barbara Byrd-Bennett $2.3 million for her steering $23 million in no-bid contracts to their company, SUPES Academy.

Vranas and Solomon pleaded not guilty in October. Solomon’s lawyer has said previously he is speaking to prosecutors about a possible plea deal.

Problems ID’d with Texas jail where Bland died

DALLAS – The small-town Texas jail where Sandra Bland died last summer needs a new building, more expertise among its staff to identify mental health issues, and body cameras and anger-management training for its jailers, according to a report issued Tuesday by a panel convened after Bland’s death.

The sheriff’s office in Waller County agreed to have outside experts review the county jail in Hempstead, about 50 miles northwest of Houston after Bland died. The Naperville woman, who was black, was jailed after a state trooper pulled her over in July for a minor traffic violation. Dashcam video of her arrest and the circumstances of her death provoked national outrage and drew the attention of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Authorities said she was hanging from a jail cell partition with a plastic garbage bag around her neck.

A medical examiner ruled it a suicide and a grand jury declined to indict any sheriff’s officials or jailers in her death.

Bland’s supporters have questioned whether the jail’s conditions had anything to do with her death.

While the panelists who presented their jail report at a news conference Tuesday in Hempstead mostly stayed away from specifics about Bland’s death, their recommendations target mental health screenings and the overall treatment of inmates.

One panelist, former U.S. Rep. Craig Washington, said anyone entering the jail was “entitled to be treated with dignity and respect as a human being.”

Ultimately, that will require a new facility with more space, he said.

“The jail is not adequate, in our judgment,” Washington said.

The panel also called on the sheriff’s office to develop a policy for storing video footage and to buy body cameras. It also said the jail should employ medical personnel who can screen incoming inmates for mental health issues.

Jailers supervising inmates should be separated from the officers who arrested them, the panel said. And jailers should undergo anger-management courses and routine evaluations.

Authorities have already said that Bland indicated on an intake questionnaire that she once tried to kill herself and was taking medication for epilepsy. After her death, the Texas Commission on Jail Standards cited the jail

for not observing inmates in person at least once every hour and not documenting that jailers had undergone training on dealing with potentially suicidal inmates.

Waller County Sheriff Glenn Smith said he liked the report and was already starting to implement parts of it.

He said jail staff would undergo “de-escalation” training in June, and that the county has already applied for a state grant to purchase body cameras.

“I’m open, willing to listen, and while we may not all agree on everything ... we’re going to move forward,” Smith said. “We’re going to make a difference.”

But the news conference was contentious at times. One person questioned why more attention wasn’t paid to the high fees many jails charge inmates to make phone calls. Another accused Washington of being used by authorities to cover up their mistakes in Bland’s case, to which he angrily replied, “You’re absolutely wrong.”

If the sheriff’s office implements the report, Washington said, “I bet you six months from now, a year from now, we’ll turn around and say, ‘Wow, look at what they did in Waller County.’ ” Bland’s family has sued the county and the trooper who arrested her.

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – House Speaker Paul Ryan on Tuesday definitively ruled out a bid for president this year, insisting that the party’s choice should emerge from the group of candidates who pursued the GOP nomination. “Count me out,” he said.

In a brief news conference at the Republican National Committee headquarters, the Wisconsin Republican sought to tamp down rampant speculation that he could end up as the party’s standard-bearer if front-runner Donald Trump and the other candidates flame out at a contested convention.

“We have too much work to do in the House to allow this speculation to swirl or have my motivations questioned,” said Ryan, who was the 2012 vice presidential nominee. “Let me be clear: I do not want, nor will I accept, the Republican nomination.”

Ryan’s comments come as a contested convention looks likelier by the day. Ryan and his aides have continually denied the speaker has presidential ambitions this year, but their statements have not put the issue to rest. That’s partly because Ryan also denied he wanted to be speaker last fall after then-Speaker John Boehner announced his resignation, but he ended up with the job anyway.

Tuesday’s appearance was an attempt to shut down the speculation once and for all, and end what aides said has become a major

distraction to Ryan’s work as speaker. Yet it may not be enough to quiet the talk about Ryan, given the unpredictable twists of the GOP presidential primary.

“So let me speak directly to the delegates on this: If no candidate has a majority on the first ballot, I believe you should only choose a person who actually participated in the primary. Count me out,” Ryan said. “I simply believe that if you want to be the nominee – to be the president – you should actually run for it. I chose not to. Therefore, I should not be considered. Period.”

Trump looks unlikely to accumulate the necessary delegates to clinch the nomination ahead of the July Republican convention in Cleveland. That would allow his lead challenger, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, to make a play for the job. A third hopeful, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, trails in the delegate count.

Yet party leaders fear neither the erratic Trump nor the polarizing Cruz could beat likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in November. They also fear the GOP won’t be able to hold onto control of the Senate with Trump or Cruz at the top of the ticket.

So if neither Trump nor Cruz can get the delegate votes necessary as balloting progresses at the convention, chaos could result – and along with it, the potential for some other Republican who’s not currently running to emerge. As a young and charismatic conservative, popular with donors and with some conservative activists, Ryan’s name has been at the top of that list for months.

SPRINGFIELD – We all have things in our past that we are not proud of and for Merle Haggard it was a felony conviction for armed robbery.

For decades, I’ve loved Haggard’s music. It was the music of the common person. Many of his songs were autobiographical about a man trying to overcome his mistakes.

Haggard, of course, died last week.

And like many of his fans I’ve found myself pondering the meaning of the man’s message.

He had a rough time when he was released from San Quentin prison.

He started out digging ditches for his brother, an electrical contractor. Like many people leaving the joint, only his family was willing to take a risk on him.

Eventually, his talents were recognized and he rose to become a country music legend.

But what if his brother hadn’t taken a risk and offered him a job?

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

There are many people in Illinois prisons who have unrealized talents.

This perverse system of mass incarceration neither benefits the individual or society.

Today, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, Illinois has the most overcrowded prison system in the U.S. And our nation incarcerates the highest percentage of its citizens of any nation in the world.

Sadly, we’ve got repressive regimes like Russia, China, Saudi Arabia and Iran beat when it comes to locking up our own citizens.

Worse yet, under a trio of Illinois Republican governors – James R. Thompson, Jim Edgar and George Ryan – prisons were billed as economic development.

Under those three, the state radically expanded its prison system.

Then down on their luck downstate communities like Galesburg, Hillsboro, Mt. Sterling, Dixon and East Moline

became home to prisons under those administrations.

Those communities deserve better and so do those locked behind their gates.

We like to think justice is blind, but it more often favors those who can afford private attorneys and whose backgrounds prosecutors and judges can more readily identify.

A drug-related arrest can land a poor person in prison. But for a middle class individual, deferred sentences and drug rehabilitation are more often the reality.

It’s time we look at alternate sentencing for most non-violent offenders and we should declare the War on Drugs a failure.

I say this to you as a 51-year-old man who has never tasted alcohol or used an illegal drug.

I’m not a libertine seeking to indulge more. I’m a realist who sees that the approach we have been taking just isn’t working.

Rarely, has a person left prison better than when he or she went in.

But for decades Illinois has spent money on cellblocks, prison guards and watchtowers but largely failed to transform lives of those it locked up.

We need to embrace alternatives to incarceration such as drug rehabilita-

tion, community service, restitution to the victims of crime and home confinement.

And for those leaving prison, we need to smooth the way for them to re-enter society.

My former Illinois Policy Institute colleague Bryant Jackson-Green tells me that in Illinois there are at least 118 professions for which government either must or may deny a license to anyone with a felony record.

For example, anyone who aspires to be a barber, boxer, cosmetologist, funeral home director, accountant or roofer, can be turned away by the government long after he or she has served time and paid his or her debt to society.

That’s shameful.

How many lives like Merle Haggard’s go unredeemed by a state unwilling to forgive?

Illinois has turned it’s back on those struggling to find a place back in society for far too long.

It’s time we offer opportunities, not scorn.

dgoss@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Drew DeMumbrum lived a dream Tuesday afternoon at the Plainfield East baseball diamond.

The Bengals’ senior left-hander was Mr. Everything as he escaped a first-inning jam, went on to pitch a four-hit shutout and cracked a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning for the game’s only runs in a snappy 3-0 Southwest Prairie Conference victory over Plainfield South.

“Drew is our rock,” East coach Adam O’Reel said of the four-year var-

sity regular. “He’s our energy. We feed off him. He’s been our leader the last couple of years.”

“Drew owned the day,” South coach Phil Bodine said.

The only real jams DeMumbrum faced came in the first and seventh innings. Marco Escobar opened the game for South (8-3, 2-2) with a double to left field. Cougars hard-luck loser Konnor Ash drew a one-out walk, but DeMumbrum (2-0) retired Gabe Wair on a popup and Nick Enloe on a strikeout to end the threat.

In the bottom of the first, Cole Lynch walked and JJ Zywiciel beat out a per-

fect bunt on an attempted sacrifice. DeMumbrum stepped in and unloaded on Ash’s first offering, a fastball, and deposited it beyond the right-center field fence for his first homer of the season, giving East (7-4, 2-1) its 3-0 lead.

“I was thinking fastball on the first pitch,” DeMumbrum said. “I reacted and turned on it. Honestly, off the bat I didn’t think it was going out, but once I saw it in the air, I thought it would go.”

“That was our approach,” O’Reel said. “We wanted to jump on fastballs.

It was good to see Drew rotate on that pitch. He has been having some balance issues at the plate.”

The Bengals’ defense helped DeMumbrum maintain the 3-0 lead through the middle innings. That included two 6-4-3 double plays – from second baseman David Salazar to shortstop Zywiciel to first baseman Michael Sullivan – in the third and sixth innings.

“Great defense today did it for us,” said DeMumbrum, who struck out four, walked four and hit one batter.

“The infield made the plays. That was a huge help. My fastball was pretty dominant, and I had a little command with the curve.”

Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – Perennial Southwest Prairie Conference power Minooka and this season’s early leader, Plainfield Central, battled to a 2-2 tie entering the bottom of the ninth inning Tuesday.

As the sun sets in the western sky, with Minooka’s Zach Earls on second base, Indians junior Jon Butler ripped a fastball over the head of Plainfield Central right fielder Justin Willner and against the right-field fence.

Minooka appeared on its way to a huge SPC victory. Not so fast. Willner fired a strike to Wildcats second baseman Kyle Cockrell, who threw another strike to catcher Matt Bunetta. He put the tag on Earls for the second out of the inning, preserving the 2-2 tie.

Jon’s big brother, Illinois Statebound Joe Butler, was up next and received an intentional walk. That

brought up junior Logan O’Brien, who had been hitless in four trips.

“I was really hoping they would walk Joe (Butler), so I could make amends for a brutal day at the plate,” O’Brien said.

O’Brien ripped a pitch beyond Wildcats left fielder Tony Marino as Jon Butler danced home with the game-winner.

“It felt great to come through for us,” O’Brien said. “This was a huge win over a very good Plainfield Central team.”

Minooka (5-6, 2-2) thus pulls within one game of SPC co-leader Plainfield Central (8-3, 3-1) with two games remaining this week, at Central on Wednesday and back at Minooka on Thursday.

“This was just a heartbreaking loss for us,” Solebo said. “We have to bounce back tomorrow.”

“This was a crushing loss for us,” Plainfield Central coach John Rosner said. “We played hard but made too

many mistakes to win this game. All three Minooka runs were unearned.”

Minooka’s Brandon Rossiter fired four scoreless innings in relief of starter Joe Butler to pick up the win. Rossiter allowed three hits and struck out seven.

“I really pitched well with men on base tonight,” Rossiter said. “I’m not a big strikeout pitcher, but I was able to get a number of them today with my curveball. This was a huge win.”

Butler allowed one earned run and five hits in five innings of work. He struck out eight.

“It was really ugly out there for us today,” Minooka coach Jeff Petrovic said. “Too many errors, bad baserunning mistakes, we didn’t hit the ball, yet we found a way to win.

“Logan O’Brien had an 0-4 day prior to his game-winning hit. He really came through for us. Joe Butler pitched well, and Brandon Rossiter did a great job in relief to pick up a well-deserved win.”

“Ash found his curve late,” O’Reel said. “He gave us fits.”

Ash, who also had one of South’s four hits, retired 11 straight after DeMumbrum’s homer before walking back-toback hitters with two outs in the fourth.

However, he ended the inning with a pickoff at second base and then set down the side in order in the fifth and sixth innings. So in effect, after falling behind 3-0 in three hitters, he pitched a six-inning no-hitter and faced one batter over the minimum. He finished with a two-hitter, struck out seven and walked three.

“A leadoff walk is trouble,” Bodine said. “Then we don’t get the out on the sacrifice, and then Drew hits it out. But the big thing is we had a 0.94 staff ERA coming in here, and it’s not going to help if we aren’t going to score any runs.”

Bodine noted the story was similar for the Cougars in a 5-2 SPC loss to Oswego East on Monday. They allowed all five runs in the second inning.

“We actually put the bat on the ball more than they did today, but you’ve got to score runs,” Bodine said. “We hit some balls pretty well, but they made the plays. That’s baseball.”

CICERO – Three young boxers representing Round One Boxing of Joliet reached the finals in last weekend’s Chicago Golden Gloves at Cicero Stadium.

One, 16-year-old Nick Perez of Joliet, was a champion. He won the Novice 139-pound division with a split decision over Yaei Gutierrez of Joey Krestel Pina Boxing.

Dominic Byerly, 17, of Morris finished second in the Novice 147-pound division and Joey Krestel, 18, of Lockport was second in the Novice 165-pound division. Bylerly lost a unanimous Dominic decision to Antoine Cobb Byerly of Taylor Park Boxing.

Krestel lost a unanimous decision to Amarith Vaughns of Harvey.

Perez, who had not had any fights prior to the Golden Gloves, beat Willis Harris of Harvey Boxing Club by unanimous decision in the semifinals. Bylerly beat Raimy Jaiomo and Krestel beat Nathaniel Perkins of Scottsdale Park Boxing in the semifinals, both by unanimous decision.

In preliminary bouts, Byerly stopped Dedre McNeal of the DRW Boxing Club via TKO in the first round, while Krestel stopped Fernando Mondragon of Valencia as the referee stopped the fight in the third round.

Eric Groves and John Follenweider are the coaches at Round One Boxing.

Plainfield South rallies past Plainfield Central

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After seeing her Plainfield South boys volleyball team post a good two-set win at Lockport on Monday, coach Taryn Surbaugh wasn’t expecting to see the Cougars come out flat in Tuesday’s match with Plainfield Central.

However, that’s just what happened as the Wildcats grabbed an early advantage and led by as many as eight points before capturing a 25-20 victory in the opener.

But to South’s credit, it bounced back from that rough start and put itself in control for much of the remainder of the match as it rallied to claim a 20-25, 25-20, 25-21 Southwest Prairie Conference home win.

“Monday was a better match for us since we were in systems more often than we weren’t and that’s what I coach,” Surbaugh said. “Today was a bit of a struggle since some of my key players were running out of steam.

We’ve got to find whatever we have left in the tank and put it on the floor. So either they’ll find it or I’m going to pull

it from them.

“We start out real slow and get more into systems as the match goes on, but sometimes in the middle they get comfortable and forget that it’s a fight for every point. They need to have more of a big picture and not narrow tunnel vision. But we have 13 kids and eight of them are juniors and four of those are starters, so it’s just a matter of experience and learning.”

In the final set, the Cougars (6-4, 3-0) grabbed a 13-7 lead on an ace from Donnie Doran (14 digs) and were able to maintain that after kills from Matt Friddle (23 assists, 13 digs, six kills, two blocks), Rhome Apton (five kills, three blocks) and Brandon Langys (nine kills, eight digs, three aces) to still possess a 17-11 advantage.

But the Wildcats (2-6, 1-2) rallied behind a kill and an ace from Wes Rogman, a shared block between Zach Boyda and Rogman, and a kill from Nick Ilibasic to close to within 17-16. However, South answered with two kills from Logan Nash (10 kills, seven digs) to help it go up 20-16 and a bit later, Nash added two more kills.

“The way that we fought back shows

a lot about our team,” Friddle said. “We have a great group of guys and I think that we can do a lot this year and maybe even come out on top in conference.

We’re all friends and have known each other and played together for a long time. It took us awhile to get going, but now we’re starting to click. Staying positive is a big key for us and also keep playing our game. We know how to fight back and win.”

In the middle set, Central took a 1310 lead after a kill by Alec Machacek and a shared block by Jack Buczek and Rogman before South responded with a 6-0 run to put up for good. Apton had two blocks and Andrew Colantone added a kill to make it 16-13 and then Nick Welter (four blocks) got a block and Langys added an ace to make it 21-16.

“At the beginning of the season it was really hard to bond together because we’ve come from different teams,” Langys said. “But since we’ve played a bunch of games together, we’re really becoming one and we’re becoming a positive and strong team.

I’m happy that we came back from that bad loss at the beginning, but every time that we get down, we manage to

find a way to get back up. I think one of our biggest things will be staying positive.”

The Wildcats grabbed a quick lead in the opener and led by eight points from 17-9 to 19-12 after a block and a kill by Buczek and a kill from Ilibasic.

South closed to within three points from 21-18 to 23-20 on kills from Welter, Langys and Nash, but Central answered each time with kills from Machacek, Rogman and Juan Ortega before Machacek got another kill.

“We played well, but South played just a little bit better,” Wildcats coach Alex Hurlburt said. “I told my guys that I imagine that there will be a lot of trading of wins and losses this year in the conference, which is nice. I know that each time we lose, people shouldn’t want to play us again because we’re going to learn a lot from our losses.

“What’s nice is that we’re playing our best volleyball at the present, which is always what I want. This looks way better than our first few matches in conference and our weekend at Glenbard East. I’m never happy about losing, but I’m happy with how the guys are playing.”

Ready for the record, Warriors go after 73 wins in finale

OAKLAND, Calif. – Stephen Curry never figured the Chicago Bulls’ 72-win mark could be matched or eclipsed.

Twenty years later, the reigning MVP and his defending champion Golden State Warriors are on the brink of doing just that and making yet more history this season.

“I knew what it was, but you never really thought about it in perspective of anybody chasing it. It was kind of that number that was out there that seemed invincible,” Curry said after practice Tuesday. “Even at the beginning of this year, even when we started 24-0, it was kind of: ‘Well, maybe we can do it. We’re going to keep playing every night with the intention of winning as many games as possible,’ but it just sounded kind of ludicrous, 7210, how much good play has to go into it. We’re there now, 72-9, and we’ve got one more chance to beat it.”

That comes Wednesday, when the Memphis Grizzlies visit Oracle Arena as Golden State goes for win No. 73 to best the 1995-96 Bulls.

And to think of all the scrutiny the Warriors got last June when they captured their first championship in 40 years.

Like that Golden State’s title was no way legit because it didn’t go through the San Antonio Spurs. Oh, and the opponents the Warriors did beat were all hurt.

Clippers coach Doc Rivers ruffled Warriors feathers six months ago when he made comments about Golden State getting lucky.

“You need luck in the West,” Rivers said. “Look at Golden State. They didn’t have to play us or the Spurs.”

The Warriors were annoyed for a moment, then went to work showing the rest of the NBA they were for real – and playing with a bit of a chip on their shoulder, no doubt about it.

They were knocked again along the way, with Curry’s pull-up-and-shootfrom-anywhere style criticized by some Hall of Famers and other former greats.

No harm, just part of it when you’re on top, Curry insisted, then shrugged it off.

He can silence them all soon enough.

“It’s a big deal for sure,” Curry said. “It’s our last regular-season game, our last tuneup before the play-

offs and nobody wants to lose their last game going into the playoffs if you can avoid it, and obviously 73. We want to get that number. Why not?”

Curry and coach Steve Kerr expected the Warriors to be better this season, but this good? No way. This many wins? Hardly. Not with every opponent bringing its best every night.

Triple-double machine Draymond Green can’t believe Golden State’s position now, either.

He wishes the record hadn’t come down to the regular-season finale.

“It would have been cool to take care of the games we were supposed to take care of and have it already out of the way,” Green said. “The way this thing has played out, to be at home with one shot at it, it’s pretty amazing. You can’t not talk about it at this point. The whole world’s talking about it now. It’s everywhere. There’s no way to hide from it now. Honestly, realistically, I didn’t think it could be done.”

Whatever happens Wednesday, the Warriors know their ultimate task remains bringing home another championship.

ST. LOUIS – Apparently, Ken Hitchcock is talked out about the Blackhawks.

The St. Louis Blues coach cut his news conference short Tuesday, a day ahead of the team’s first-round playoff matchup against the team that has won three Stanley Cups the last six seasons, including last year.

Hitchcock said his team was at full strength for the first time all season and that it was nice to have choices heading into Game 1 at home on Wednesday night. And that was it.

“So, let’s play,” Hitchcock said, adding “thanks” as he left the interview room to stunned silence.

There hasn’t been a repeat Stanley Cup champion since 1998, and the Blackhawks will be opening on the road against a team that won the season series 3-2.

“We know it’s not going to be easy,”

Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said.

“We’re facing as good a team as there is in the league right out of the gate. We’ve got to be at our best.”

The Blues finished second overall in the Western Conference with 107 points, four more than Chicago. They’re the No. 3 playoff seed after overcoming long-term injuries to both goalies as well as forwards Patrik Berglund, Jaden Schwartz, Paul Stastny and Alexander Steen.

Now comes the hard part. The Blues have been eliminated in the first round three straight years, including 2014 when they were ahead 2-0 and then lost four straight to the Blackhawks.

CHICAGO – The last title defense for the Blackhawks also started with the St. Louis Blues, and it nearly ended there, too. Four of the six games went to overtime before the Hawks moved on.

While most of the finer details from that 2014 playoff series have faded into history, Chicago defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson remembers how close it was, enough to brace himself for what is coming this time around.

“St. Louis is a great team, and I know we’re going to have a handful to try to get these guys out,” Hjalmarsson said after the Blackhawks practiced on Monday. “I know they’re going to be super motivated.”

It has been almost two decades since the NHL last had a repeat champion, and that is the challenge for the Blackhawks as they go for their fourth Stanley Cup title in seven seasons beginning on Wednesday night in St. Louis. The potential road for Jonathan Toews and company includes a couple of motivated challengers, beginning with the bruising Blues.

St. Louis also finished second in the Central Division two years ago, earning home-ice advantage in the first round against the third-place Blackhawks.

The Blues opened with a pair of overtime victories, and then dropped four in a row – including overtime losses in Games 4 and 5.

“It’s not going to be easy against this team,” Toews said. “Obviously we have a history with St. Louis. They’re one of those teams that competes like no other and we know starting on the road is not going to be easy, so we have to have our best right away.”

NASCAR clouding its image with politics

The Associated Press CHARLOTTE, N.C. – There are Democrats who enjoy NASCAR. Jews and atheists and women, too.

You wouldn’t know it lately, not after several events this season, including the invocation before Saturday night’s race at Texas Motor Speedway.

Duck Commander founder Phil Robertson used the address to pray “that we put a Jesus man in the White House” and noted that “all right Texas, we got here via Bibles and guns.”

Robertson, a star of “Duck Dynasty,” has publicly voiced his support for Ted Cruz in the presidential race.

His son, Willie, has endorsed GOP front-runner Donald Trump, and the family has always been vocal with its conservative beliefs. It shouldn’t Phil have been a surprise when Robert- Robertson son used his time on stage to push an Duck Dynasty agenda.

Yet in many ways it was because NASCAR has tried for the last several years to present itself as a sport that embraces diversity, that no longer tolerates many of the racial stereotypes so often associated with the sport.

Last year, NASCAR chairman Brian France took a strong stance against the presence of Confederate flags at race tracks and said he would do everything in his legal power to prevent them from being displayed. It was a progressive move and unusual.

Sports are supposed to be entertainment, after all, and most fans don’t tune in expecting or wanting to see soapbox speeches. It’s why the stick-and-ball leagues try to stay neutral. When they do embrace America, it’s done in safe ways, such as the singing of “God Bless America” or recognizing military personnel. The logos for Major League Baseball, the NBA and the NFL are all red, white and blue, and league leaders tend to avoid politics and polarizing positions in an effort not to offend fans who don’t share their views.

NASCAR has always been the exception.

The France family, which owns the series, has long welcomed political candidates at their events and has a history of making public endorsements.

The Trump endorsement was met with significant backlash, and France said he was disappointed that his record on promoting diversity had suddenly been called into question. He has spent at least the last decade trying to help his family business shed its image as a sport for intolerant rednecks, but there is no away around it: His Trump endorsement put those efforts at risk.

Then came the Robertson commentary on Saturday night, which Texas Motor Speedway officials said Monday that they did not know was coming.

The Robertsons and “Duck Dynasty” had a threeyear sponsorship agreement with the speedway, and the contract allowed the family to fill all honorary roles however they chose. The Robertsons even had a lesser-known family member sing a cringe-worthy version of the national anthem, but Will Robertson’s vocals were the least of NASCAR’s problems after the stump speech from the family patriarch.

His stance, coupled with France’s endorsement of Trump, presents a confusing picture of what NASCAR represents.

There are many who oppose the act of giving an invocation before every race because they don’t like religion shoved down their throats, but the pre-race prayer is a longtime tradition that NASCAR doesn’t seem to have any interest in abandoning. In Texas, it happened to give Robertson the chance to promote his conservative views, which ultimately are a reflection on NASCAR. Three years ago, the Texas speedway allowed the National Rifle Association to be the title sponsor of its spring race just months after NASCAR participated in a deal that put a car in the Daytona 500 that specifically honored the victims of the Sandy Hook school shooting.

It was an embarrassing mixed message and NASCAR swiftly issued guidelines requiring approval for race-naming rights. The policy gives NASCAR the option to reject a sponsor if its “brand has been tarnished by controversy, crisis or circumstance such that its association with the event would damage the NASCAR brand or the image of the sport.”

Whether Robertson violated that clause Saturday night is a matter of opinion. Either way, NASCAR needs to take a serious look at the message that is being delivered each week and how entering the political arena is clouding the image France wants to project.

Dress up spring asparagus 10 fresh ideas play up veggie’s versatility

T

he fact that decent asparagus now is available all year doesn’t really matter. We’ve been programmed to think of it as something we must eat in spring. And so we shall.

The good news is asparagus is wildly versatile. It’s delicious raw (and, so long as you don’t mind the cliché, wrapped in prosciutto), roasted, shaved, sliced, chopped, even puréed (think creamy soup). Its assertive flavor means it pairs well with robust meats (everything from the roasts of early spring to the barbecue of early summer), but it still is light and fresh enough to work in a salad (farro and feta would be nice).

So to help you get spring off to a great start, here are 10 fresh, easy ideas for eating more asparagus.

1. Soup

Cut 1 bunch of asparagus into 1/2-inch pieces. Steam until just tender and still bright green.

Reserve 1/2 cup of pieces, then blend the remaining asparagus with 1 cup warmed half-andhalf and 1 cup warmed low-sodium chicken broth or stock. Season with salt and pepper and a pinch of cayenne. Spoon into bowls and top with the reserved pieces of asparagus and a sprinkle of crumbled feta cheese.

2. Pizza

this. Sprinkle with crumbled blue cheese and toasted walnuts.

5. Pilaf

In a skillet, cook 2 chopped shallots in 3 tablespoons butter. Add 1 bunch asparagus (chopped small) and 1/2 cup chopped pecans. Cook until tender and lightly browned. Add 2 cups cooked rice and 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme. Season with salt and black pepper.

6. Glazed

In a skillet, melt 2 tablespoons butter. Add a bunch of asparagus and 2 tablespoons maple syrup. Cook until the asparagus is tender and the sauce is slightly reduced. Season with salt and pepper, then stir in the zest of 1/2 lemon.

7. Noodles

Using a paring knife or peeler, cut a bunch of asparagus lengthwise into thin strips. Boil 8 ounces of fettuccini pasta, adding the asparagus during the last minute of cooking. Drain and toss with butter, 1 minced clove garlic and freshly grated Parmesan cheese. Season with salt and pepper.

8. In a jacket

Microwave a baking potato until tender. Cut in half and scoop out the middle, leaving enough potato flesh to keep the shape. Mash the scooped out middle and stir in a handful of shredded cheddar cheese, chopped fresh chives and chopped lightly steamed asparagus.

Spoon back into the potato skins and place on a baking sheet. Bake at 400 F for 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and lightly browned.

Arrange thin asparagus spears over a prepared pizza crust. Top with slices of brie and pieces 9. Bruschetta Thinly slice a bunch of asparagus diagonally. Combine with 1 cup chopped roasted red of torn prosciutto. Bake at 400 degrees F. until the crust is golden and the cheese is melted, peppers, 1 cup diced fresh mozzarella cheese, 1/4 cup torn basil leaves, 1 minced clove garlic, 2 about 10 minutes. Drizzle with balsamic glaze. tablespoons olive oil, 2 tablespoon red wine vinegar and 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard. Season with salt and black pepper. Serve over slices of rustic bread.

3. Panini Assemble a sandwich of sundried tomato pesto, cooked bacon, asparagus spears and fontina cheese. Butter the outsides of the bread and pan fry, pressing with a spatula until the 10. Salad cheese is melted and the sandwich is heated through.

Boil 1 pound fingerling potatoes in salted water, then drain and cool. Slice the potatoes into 1/4-inch-thick slices. Combine with 1 bunch asparagus, lightly steamed and cut into 2-inch pieces. Dress with 1/2 cup creme fraiche, 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard, 1 tablespoon lemon 4. Roasted juice, 2 tablespoons chopped chives, 1 tablespoon finely minced fresh rosemary, salt and Toss asparagus lightly with oil, then season with salt and pepper. Spread on a rimmed baking sheet and roast at 400 degrees F. until browned and tender. Bigger stalks are best for pepper.

• Aortic valve stenosis. This condition also significantly elevates the risk of the mother and/or baby dying during pregnancy. It has several causes, of which rheumatic heart disease is one. Aortic valve stenosis (stiffness) reduces the amount of blood the heart can pump out to the body. If the blockage is severe, it can cause serious problems for mother and baby. If treatment is needed, sooner is better.

• Mitral valve stenosis. In this condition, another of the heart’s four valves becomes stiff. As a result, blood tends to back up into the lungs. Unless this condition is very mild, treatment often is needed to protect mother and baby.

• Other conditions. Some forms of arrhythmia (an irregular heartbeat) and cardiomyopathy (disease of the heart muscle) also increase risk of problems during pregnancy.

Finally, some heart medicines are dangerous to a developing baby. Be sure to discuss your medications with your doctor before becoming pregnant.

Most women with heart problems can have a successful pregnancy and a healthy baby. The most important thing is you consult with your doctor about whether it is safe for you to become pregnant. If so, find out what treatments might be needed to protect both of you.

Dear Reader: When a woman is pregnant, her heart is working for two. Blood passes through her placenta to her baby.

This places additional demands on her body’s circulatory system, particularly the heart. Among other changes, her heart pumps a much higher volume of blood each minute. As a woman with a heart condition, it’s particularly important for you to understand what this added workload might mean to your health and to your baby’s.

Any woman with a heart problem should see her doctor before conceiving. If the pregnancy is unexpected, she should see her doctor as soon as she thinks she might be pregnant. The doctor can tell her if she needs to take any special precautions. The doctor also might want her to see a heart specialist (cardiologist), if she hasn’t already.

Here are some common heart conditions and how they might affect you during pregnancy: • Congenital heart disease. Most women born with an abnormality of the heart or its major blood vessels can safely have children. Before conceiving, a cardiologist should determine the type and severity of the defect. This will give you a better sense of the potential risks pregnancy may pose.

Babies born to women with congenital heart disease have a higher risk of having a heart abnormality themselves.

• Pulmonary hypertension. This condition causes very high blood pressure in the blood vessels of the lungs. It is associated with a high risk of dying during pregnancy.

• Rheumatic heart disease. In this condition, one or more heart valves do not open and close normally, obstructing blood flow.

To me, what happened illustrates how important it is for parents to talk to their sons and daughters about responsible behavior because failure to do that can have lifelong consequences for both. If you haven’t already done so, you should tell your parents what happened. However, if you don’t feel safe doing that, tell a counselor at school.

Yes, you could use only control-bidding via two clubs - two diamonds - two hearts - three hearts - three spades - four diamonds - five clubs - five spades - seven hearts, but the splinter makes life easier.
