CREST HILL – Birds have apparently made a mess at the Stateville Correctional Center – and the Illinois Department of Corrections needs somebody to clean up the mess.

IDOC’s Crest Hill prison is seeking a vendor to “clean and restore specific documents and records that may have been damaged due to bird droppings and other weather-related circumstances,” according to a bid invitation posted March 25 on the state’s procurement bulletin.

Some of the documents are labeled as activity logbooks for various prison units, according to photos attached to the bid invitation. IDOC spokeswoman Nicole Wilson said the state agency became aware of the problem in July 2014. There’s pending litigation against IDOC, Wilson said.

The issue extends well beyond the damaged documents, Alan Mills, executive director with Uptown People’s Law Center in Chicago, said in an email Thursday.

“The ‘bird problem’ is not limited to documents in storage,” Mills wrote, noting how the same bird infestation is an issue in the living units – particularly in F House.

That unit is the subject of two cases.

Sarah Grady, a lead attorney with Loevy & Loevy on the case, was not immediately available for comment Thursday evening.

Kenneth Harris, public service administrator at the Crest Hill prison, said Thursday he’s been in his post since December and that the recovery of documents “has been a high priority.”

The circumstances surrounding the damaged documents are unclear, and

Wilson did not provide many details in an email Thursday.

“Since taking office, Governor Rauner and current IDOC officials have recognized this is a serious matter and, as the solicitation overview suggests, the Department is taking a proactive approach to have the documents cleaned and restored,” Wilson said in an email.

Bid documents note the purpose is to “restore damaged books and records to a condition that is clean and legible.” The invitation states the resulting contract will “have an initial term of 9 months,” and “in no event will the total term of the contract … exceed ten (10) years.”

The bid is sectioned into two parts: one for the restoration and another requesting pricing to digitally scan all the documents once they are restored, Harris said.

Harris said Thursday he could not comment on specifics. Wilson and Harris both declined to say how many pages required cleaning or how long they were in their current state before they were discovered.

Bid documents show the books and records are “stored in several rooms within the facility,” and amount to 83 “banker boxes,” 97 “smaller boxes” and about 100 stacked 8½-by-11-inch envelopes.

A site visit is mandatory for all bidders.

A pre-bid meeting is set for 10 a.m. Friday at the Stateville Correctional Center, 16830 S. Route 53 in Crest Hill, according to the bid invitation. Bids are due April 8.

Suspect in Joliet auto body shop double-murder case is arraigned

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The man accused of killing two people at a Joliet auto body shop was arraigned Thursday in court.

William N. Krasawski, 41, was formally charged with the murders of Michael R. Oram, 48, of Joliet and Jamie L. Willis, 43, of Lockport. The victims were discovered March 9 bludgeoned to death inside Oram’s business, Fleet Specialty Painting and Auto Body, 809 E. Police said detectives learned Krasawski had been at the auto shop the night before the slayings and went to question him at the Bourbonnais address listed on his parole records with the Department of Corrections. Krasawski was tracked to a Chicago Heights hotel and initially refused to come out of the room when officers arrived, according to police reports.

Krasawski was on parole for aggravated vehicular hijacking of a handicapped person.

He also previously was charged with attempted aggravated robbery in 2004, aggravated robbery and theft in 2003 and robbery in 1997, according to DOC records.

Park district is improving 20 parks with referendum money

The Joliet Park District will add playground equipment and make other improvements at nine more parks this year. Four more are slated for 2017.

Only Briese Park got the tall slide.

But Mayor Art Schultz Park received the first zip line installed by the Joliet Park District. And park officials said the improved appearance of Crombie Park was noticed in the neighborhood.

Neighborhood park improvements have not been the main attention-getter in the referendum spending, which has included plans for road and trail work in Pilcher Park, an indoor recreation facility at Nowell Park and new lights that were installed last year at Memorial Stadium.

But new playground equipment gets noticed in the neighborhoods.

“I was kind of excited,” Jesus Navejas said of seeing the blue slide and other features added at Briese Park.

Everyone at the park seemed happy with the improvements.

“I think it’s a lot nicer. The kids are having a blast,” Cathy Miller said.

The one problem, Miller said, is now that there are so many people, the park needs more picnic tables and especially more parking.

Park district Interim Executive Director Matt Pehle nodded his head when told about the parking complaint, which he’s heard before.

“The only way to have more parking is to cut into the open space,” Pehle said. “We’re hesitant to do that.”

As for the picnic tables, Pehle said a pavilion would be nice in Briese Park, but there is not enough parking

Yolanda Isaacs, vice president of Student Development, proposed a recommendation to the Board of Trustees this week for the creation of a legacy program that would be cutting edge and a “trailblazing opportunity.”

“We would potentially be the first community college to implement a legacy program like this,” she said at Tuesday’s workshop meeting.

Under the proposal, the legacy program would award financial assistance to students who are the son, daughter, stepson, stepdaughter or legal dependent of a JJC graduate who earned an associate’s degree, she said.

Students also would have to be enrolled full time and be a JJC District 525 resident, which covers several counties, including Grundy and Will.

“There is very little risk to the college, but the rewards would come back to the college,” said Amy Murphy, Corporate and Community Services director.

A past history of the operations of the Renaissance Center was given to trustees.

Janice Reedus, Business and Auxiliary Services director, said college officials in 2013 were directed by trustees to review the center’s operations, which was done with hospitality consultants Bakergroup.

The financial performance and other aspect of the center’s operations were shown to be poor.

Murphy said the college worked with VenuWorks to come up with several business models for the center and that third-party management was shown as the best option.

Joliet museum documentary to show at Skilling tornado seminar

A documentary about the 1990 Plainfield tornado was created in conjunction with the exhibit “Eight Minutes in August: The 1990 Tornado,” which ran summer and fall of last year at the Joliet Area Historical Museum.

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A documentary produced by the Joliet Area Historical Museum will be presented Saturday during meteorologist Tom Skilling’s 36th Annual Tornado and Severe Weather Seminar.

Skilling, chief meteorologist for WGN-TV, will present an abridged version of the 40-minute documentary titled “8 Minutes in August – The EF-5 Plainfield Tornado” while speaking at the half-day seminar at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia.

A news release on the event calls the documentary “the best program he [Skilling] has seen on the infamous Aug. 28, 1990, tornado.”

That’s high praise indeed, said museum Executive Director Greg Peerbolte, who will speak at the seminar about the documentary.

“I was pretty amazed to hear that,” Peerbolte said. “It’s giving the docu-

mentary, appearing at an event like that, a high level of credibility.”

There will be 11 speakers at the seminar, including Louis Uccellini, director of the National Weather Service. Information about the seminar, which runs from noon to 4:30 p.m., is

The documentary does feature Skilling along with interviews with: WJOL-AM Director Scott Slocum, who did on-the-scene reporting at the time of the tornado; Thomas Thanas, who was Joliet’s city attorney at the

time and was at the scene of tornado damage; and Sue Hasenyager, head of the Plainfield Historical Society.

Peerbolte said Skilling’s showing of a video segment will be the debut presentation of the documentary, although it actually has been out on YouTube. The museum also plans to make hard copies of the video available in its store.

The documentary was created in conjunction with the museum’s exhibit “Eight Minutes in August: The 1990 Tornado,” which ran summer and fall of last year.

“The documentary is supposed to be the exhibit in film form,” Peerbolte said. “It was the first time we ever did one. It was a new medium for us.”

The exhibit was unique, Peerbolte said, in the emotions it evoked among museum visitors.

“Emotionally, I would say it was one of our most effective exhibits,” he said. “I can’t remember another exhibit where we saw people on more than one occasion leave in tears.”

By SHAW MEDIA JOLIET – The Warren-Sharpe Community Center of Joliet has entered the Seeds of Change Grant Program and is asking the community to vote for its application.

Seeds of Change is offering two $20,000 and 10 $10,000 grants in each of the community garden and school garden categories. Warren-Sharpe is competing in the community garden category, according to a news release from Will County.

The grant program aims to enhance the environmental, economic and social well-being of gardens, farms and communities. The grants will be awarded to organizations that help support sustainable, community-based gardening and farming programs that focus on teaching people about the food they eat and how it is grown.

grants through the We WILL Grow School and Community Garden Program,” Kathy Pecora, coordinator for the Will County project, said in the news release.

The Warren-Sharpe Community Center feeds about 800 families with produce grown in its community garden and wants to expand, according to the news release. The city of Joliet has given vacant lots to the Warren Sharpe Community Center. The grant would be used to start the expansion.

The Joliet Park District also has applied for the grant.

About May 3, Seeds of Change will announce 24 grant recipients: 12 school garden recipients and 12 community garden recipients. Two school gardens and two community gardens will receive $20,000 each; and 10 school gardens and 10 community gardens will receive $10,000 each.

ROMEOVILLE – The Romeoville Village Board held its final workshop meeting Wednesday to review the $98.3 million 2016-17 budget.

The budget, which is scheduled to be considered for approval April 20, is about $7.2 million more than Romeoville’s 2015-16 budget.

Finance Director Kirk Openchowski said Thursday the difference between the village’s current and upcoming budgets can be attributed to three factors.

Openchowski said the village planned for an additional $2 million in state income tax dollars, having anticipated last year it would receive only half the amount typically allocated because of financial uncertainty at the state level. The village also acquired about $2 million from a property tax settlement with the Citgo refinery. And the final factor – responsible for the remaining $3 million – concerns standard salary and contract increases.

According to Openchowski, the village balanced the 2016-17 budget using $6.5 million in accumulated fund balance dollars for capital improvement projects. These are mostly tax increment financing, bond, and water and sewer funds.

He doesn’t anticipate the budget will be altered significantly before the board’s upcoming vote.

“There won’t be any major changes to it,” he said.

Included in the budget are several

capital projects. Among them are new fire and Metra stations, street resurfacing, improvements to several area parks and a new bike path.

“They’re not ongoing expenses,” Mayor John Noak said Thursday, noting much of the funding for the projects either was set aside with those endeavors in mind or obtained through grants.

The new fire station at 18 Montrose Drive is budgeted to cost about $2.2 million, with the majority of the cost covered by the Citgo settlement money, according to Openchowski. The station is scheduled to be complete by September.

Engineering and design for the Metra station, to be at 135th Street and New Avenue, will cost $300,000 – 80 percent of which will be grant-funded, according to village documents. Metra will contribute $800,000 of the $1 million to be spent on station construction in 2016-17.

Street resurfacing will cost the village about $2.5 million, with about $1.5 million going toward repairing collector streets that receive moderate traffic.

Deer Crossing, O’Hara Woods, Hampton and Century parks will see a combined $1.7 million in improvements, and a new park – Green Haven Park – will be established at a cost of $250,000.

The installation of a bike path along Weber Road from Airport Road to Interstate 55 is budgeted for $1.6 million, although $1.3 million will be covered by federal grant dollars.

After a quick frisk, the officers placed the boy in handcuffs and spoke with him for a couple minutes before leading him to a squad car, according to the video. Ferdinardo said the teen was taken to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital for a mental evaluation.

“Because of Sergeant Truhlar’s professional and caring manner, he was able to gain the subject’s trust; and with the help of Officer Clesceri and Officer Wyatt, a tragic situation was prevented,” Ferdinardo said.

All three officers will receive a letter of commendation and are expected to be nominated for the department’s Lifesaving Award, which would be presented next year.

bstanley@shawmedia.com HOMER GLEN – Police are investigating a robbery that happened this week at a Homer Glen gas station.

At 12:53 p.m. Wednesday, Will County sheriff’s police were called to Circle K Gas Station, 15861 S. Bell Road, where the manager said he had been attacked while leaving with money from the store.

The 61-year-old man told deputies he was making a “bank run” and was walking to his car, parked about 100 feet from the doors, according to sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer. As he opened the door to the vehicle, a black man ran up, punched him in the mouth and pulled on the money bag he was carrying, she said.

“There was a brief struggle, and the manager was pushed into the side of his vehicle and thrown to the ground. The offender then gained control of the money bag, ran to a newer-model silver Nissan Rogue that was parked nearby with a second male black subject behind the wheel [and] took off,” Hoffmeyer said.

The manager suffered minor cuts and bruising to his mouth and refused further medical treatment, according to police reports. Hoffmeyer said detectives are reviewing video surveillance of the incident.

ROMEOVILLE – Beer and bacon lovers will get a chance to test nearly three dozen upand-coming craft drinks and bacon-inspired creations Saturday at Romeoville’s first Beer & Bacon Festival.

Festivalgoers can snag samples from vendors such as Honey Jam Cafe, Uncle Bub’s, Cheesecakes by James, Romeoville-based microbrewery Metal Monkey Brewing, Banging Gavel and Urban Legend Brewery.

In all, there are 12 Chicago-area bacon vendors and 10 beer vendors – with two unique craft beers apiece.

“Our philosophy is these are up-and-coming craft beers – these local brewers have an enormous amount of passion – but it’s difficult [to market],” event organizer Lee Fry said. “They are going to get to

see a lot of people they normally wouldn’t be able to connect with, and attendees will get to try interesting beers. Both sides are winning and are going to have a lot of fun doing it.”

The ticketed event will be held at the Edward Hospital Athletic and Events Center. It will start at 6 p.m. for VIP ticket holders and 7 p.m. for general admission. The festival ends at 10 p.m.

General admission is $65 a person and includes access to all

beer stations, the 12 bacon stations, free water and soda, and 16 beer tickets. VIP tickets are $100 each, with early entrance, a first-hour special raffle, two raffle tickets, a fast pass to tasting and a commemorative T-shirt.

Tickets still can be bought online at www.rvbeernbacon. com and will be available at the door, but Fry urges people to buy them in advance. Fry said he expects up to 500 attendees.

In addition to the beer and bacon, the festival will have raffles and prizes, including dog sculptures. A portion of ticket prices and all raffle ticket proceeds will be donated to PAWS of Chicago.

Fry said there also will be a wine booth, DJ and door prizes.

“We got a lot of calls from people saying they wanted to come with [a significant other] but that they didn’t like beer, so we’re trying to accommodate with a wine station,” Fry said.

The two biggest park projects planned this year are at Heggie and Garnsey parks.

Both are larger parks, and $1.2 million in improvements are slated for those two parks alone. The improvements at six neighborhood parks in 2015 cost $970,000.

The park district advertised this week for bids to work at Heggie and Garnsey. Work is scheduled to start this spring.

Heggie Field, at Collins Street and Williamson Avenue, is one of the larger parks on the East Side. It includes a soccer field.

Among plans for Heggie is expansion of the walking trail around the entire park. An exercise station, similar to what is at Inwood Park, will be added. At Heggie, however, the exercise equipment will be all in one place rather than along the walking trail.

A splash pad will be installed. The picnic shelter will be renovated, and restrooms will be updated.

The playground will be moved to a spot with more open space as its location is switched with that of the basketball courts.

“One of the things we heard is people wanted more open space around the playground,” Pehle said.

Garnsey Park, at Wilcox Street and Curtis Avenue, will get similar improvements. The walking trail will be extended. An exercise station will be added, again all in one spot. A splash pad will be installed.

“I think we’re going to do a zip line at Garnsey Park as well,” Pehle said, although he added that is not definite.

LOCAL BRIEFS Police: Man cut woman during fight in Joliet parking lot

JOLIET – A Joliet man was arrested after a woman was cut in the face in a parking lot Wednesday.

Joliet Police Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said the confrontation occurred about 9 a.m. outside Zip Fitness, 2134 W. Jefferson St. “A 32-year-old woman told officers she had been at Room 113 of the Fenton Eric D. Motel, which is across Walker the street from the gym,” Gregory said. “She’d gone there to ask Eric D. Walker, 53, who was staying there with his wife, for cigarettes and alcohol.”

The woman told her 40-year-old husband Walker made a sexual proposition to her when she asked for the items, which led to the dispute among the three of them in the parking lot, Gregory said. A witness told police Walker struck at the woman and cut her near the eye.

“The victim told officers he’d had a knife. It was also reported as a bottle in his hand, But no weapons were found,” Gregory said. Gregory said police reports also note the victim and her husband were “highly intoxicated.”

Walker, of the 400 block of West Marion Street, was arrested, but refused to cooperate during the booking process at the police station, according to Gregory.

He was booked into the Will County jail on charges of aggravated battery and obstructing justice.

Prostitution sting at Romeoville hotel yields 22 arrests

ROMEOVILLE – Twenty-two people were arrested in March when police conducted an online prostitution sting at a Romeoville hotel.

“This is something we do once a year because the hotels don’t want this kind of activity,” Romeoville police Cmdr.

Joliet roommate murder trial scheduled for April

JOLIET – A Joliet woman accused of fatally stabbing her roommate is set to go to trial in April.

Defense attorneys and prosecutors confirmed Thursday to Judge Daniel Rozak that both sides will be ready for the April 11 trial date. Kadiedra S. Speed, 21, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Sharleatha M. Green, 34, on Aug. 31, Kadiedra S. Speed 2014.

Will County Assistant Public Defender Jaya Varghese agreed to Rozak’s request to inform the jury commission in advance if potential jurors will be needed that day. Speed may choose a bench trial, in which Rozak would decide the outcome of the case.

Police said Speed and Green had been living in the same apartment in the 200 block of North Eastern Avenue for about a month. Green told Speed to leave that morning and had the locks changed before Speed returned with her boyfriend about 12:30 p.m. Aug. 31.

Witnesses told police Speed and her companion broke a window to get inside and the two women began fighting.

Speed reportedly stabbed Green with a knife and fled before police arrived.

Speed was arrested later that night and her boyfriend was questioned, but not charged.

According to court documents, shortly before moving to North Eastern Avenue, Speed had been living in Crest Hill, attending Joliet Junior College and working at the Home Depot warehouse in Joliet.

Toussaint Chevalier Griffin was born in Cairo, IL, on Oct. 24, 1944, to Jack J., Jr. and Geneva Hathaway Griffin.

At a very young age, he was christened at Ward Chapel AME Church in Cairo, IL. He was educated in the public schools of Cairo and went on to complete high school at Joliet Central High School in Joliet, IL, graduating in 1964.

Toussaint had a distinguished career while a member of the U.S. Navy. His service in the U.S. Navy from 1965 to 1978 included action in the Vietnam conflict and working in Naval Intelligence in Europe. Upon leaving the Navy, Toussaint joined the staff at the Department of Defense in the Human Intelligence Division and later was transferred to an administrative position in charge of the Technical Division until his retirement in 2014.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Geneva and Jack Griffin, Jr.; his brother, Brian Griffin; and sister, Angela Griffin. In addition he was preceded in death by his in-laws, Herbert Scott; Martha Kelly Griffin and Ruth Gordon Griffin.

Toussaint was a resident of Annandale, VA. He leaves to grieve his loss, his loving and devoted wife of 34 years, Cynthia; his loving daughters, Olivia (Pierce) Royle and Summer Griffin; beloved son, Jack Griffin IV; and beautiful 6-month-old grandson (Pierce Jr.), all of Annandale, VA. He will be greatly missed by his sisters, Jacqualine F. Scott of Homewood, IL, Acquanetta (Daniel) Polley, Sr. of Shorewood, IL, and Makeda (James) Clayton of Seattle, WA; his brothers, Jack J. Griffin III of Lindenhurst, IL, Donald F. Griffin Sr. of Naperville, IL, Robert (Patricia) Griffin Sr. of Moreno Valley, CA, and Pierre (Regina) Griffin of Joliet, IL. He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews, and other extended family members; cousins, in-laws; and friends.

Survived by two daughters, Kathy Kirby of Saugatuck, MI, and Terri Kirby of Glendale Heights, IL; one sister, Barbara Baxter of Adamsville, TN; nieces, Nancy Baxter and Rhonda Tears; sister-in-law, Marilyn Holmes; cousins, Holly Holmes and Sharon Kuhner of Houston, TX, Debbie Holmes-Hickman of Valparaiso, IN, and Allen Holmes Jr. of Homewood, IL. Preceded in death by husband, Allan B. Kirby (2006); her parents, Mable Volke and Raymond Holmes; her brothers, Allen Holmes and Philip Holmes; and her sister, Jean Doyle.

Nancy was born Jan. 2, 1930, in Chicago.

She was an active member of United Methodist Church of Minooka.

Born May 10, 1927, in Philadelphia, PA, Mildred Jean was the daughter of the late Guy and Arlie Bell (Humble) Raymond. She moved with her family to Wilmington at the age of 1, where she was then raised and educated. Jean married Paul Ryan in Champaign, and together they made their home in Wilmington.

She worked at the Soldiers Widows Home as an attendant, and will be remembered for her love of shopping and dancing.

Survivors include one niece; one nephew; her sister-in-law, Ruth Whyde; and several great- and great-great nieces and nephews, as well as her dear friend and neighbor.

Jean was preceded by her husband, Paul (2002); and two brothers, James Raymond Whyde and Ronald Whyde.

Nobel literature laureate Imre Kertesz dies at 86 The ASSOCIATED PRESS BUDAPEST, Hungary –– Imre Kertesz, the Hungarian writer who won the 2002 Nobel Prize for Literature for a body of fiction largely drawn from his experience as a teenage prisoner in Nazi concentration camps, died Thursday. He was 86.

Book publishing firm Magveto Kiado said Kertesz died at his Budapest home after a long illness.

Hungarian President Janos Ader said Kertesz’s life was a “gift” to all those who loved, knew, read and understood him.

“Like no one else, he saw so sharply and made others see so exactly the nature of dictatorships, ‘the age of irrationality,’ ” Ader said in a letter to the writer’s family. “He knew that the lack of external freedom can be endured only with the freedom of spirit.”

SAN FRANCISCO – Shirley Hufstedler, a former federal appellate court judge who served as the nation’s first education secretary, has died. She was 90.

Hufstedler died Wednesday at a hospital in Glendale, California, Morrison & Foerster, the law firm she worked at, said. She had cerebrovascular disease.

A separate Department of Education was created under President Jimmy Carter, who elevated it to a Cabinet-level position and appointed Hufstedler its first secretary.

Although her tenure was short -lived after Carter lost the election to Ronald Reagan, Hufstedler defended the department against Reagan’s vows to dismantle it.

Education deserved a Cabinet place in part to bolster Americans’ knowledge of foreign languages and international affairs, she said.

“It would make about as much sense to abandon the federal responsibility for education in today’s world as it would to dismantle the Pentagon and rely for the common defense on the flintlocks that the Constitution guarantees our right to bear,” Hufstedler told The Associated Press in 1980.

CHICAGO – A judge on Thursday ordered the arrest of former U.S. Rep. Mel Reynolds, who is facing federal tax charges but is refusing to return to Chicago from South Africa because he says he’s caring for an ill daughter there.

U.S. District Judge John Darrah on Wednesday had denied a request from Reynolds – who is free on bond – to delay the start of his May 2 trial so he could stay abroad longer. Darrah ordered an arrest warrant after Reynolds told the judge in an open letter Thursday that he wouldn’t appear in court as ordered. He said he’s staying in South Africa because his 23-year-old daughter has scoliosis and also might have cervical cancer.

Illinois airport evacuated due to suspicious bag

PEORIA – An Illinois airport was evacuated for about three hours Thursday morning after a passenger had a bag that appeared to contain tubes of explosive material, although security officials determined it wasn’t a bomb.

The Peoria International Airport was evacuated just after 6:30 a.m. Thursday and reopened about 9:30 a.m., airport Director Gene Olson said. The Peoria Police Department’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit was called after the suspicious items were found during routine security screenings, Olson said.

CHICAGO – A white Chicago police officer charged with murder in the shooting of a black teenager has been hired to work as a janitor for the city’s police union as he awaits trial, the union president said Thursday, prompting protests.

Dean Angelo, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Chicago, said the union hired Jason Van Dyke about three weeks ago. Van Dyke is accused of shooting 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times

in 2014. The shooting was captured on squad-car video and has prompted investigations, including a federal civil rights probe of the Chicago Police Department. Van Dyke has been suspended from the department without pay.

The union would do the same for any Chicago officer and have hired dozens of people who are in no-pay status, Angelo said.

Man exonerated of murders charged with battery

CHICAGO – A man who was awarded $10 million by the city of Chicago in 2013 after spending 25 years in prison for a double murder he didn’t commit is charged with aggravated battery.

The Chicago Tribune reported 50-yearold Eric Caine is held without bond after being arrested Sunday at his Riverside home. It wasn’t immediately known if Caine has legal representation.

Police said they responded to reports of a disturbance at Caine’s home and found two men battered and bleeding outside the residence. The men told police Caine attacked them after “words were exchanged.”

Police said the men were treated for

their injuries at a hospital.

Caine’s conviction in the 1986 slayings of Vincent and Rafaela Sanchez was largely based on a confession made after he was physically abused by Chicago detectives.

Churches becoming targets for thieves

WAUKEGAN – Suburban Chicago police said the fact that churches are soft targets might be behind a string of church burglaries and vandalism.

Waukegan police Cmdr. Joe Florip said Wednesday investigators don’t believe religion is a factor in the crime spree that began earlier this month.

Police said the first of four church burglaries occurred the evening of March 22 and was reported the next day. The three other churches were burglarized and vandalized Sunday evening. Stolen items included computers, printers, crucifixes, candlestick holders and cash.

Florip said the churches are open, inviting places and that likely made them desirable for those involved in the crimes.

Waukegan police said patrols will be increased around all religious venues.

RICHMOND, Va. – A gunman shot a Virginia state trooper Thursday at a busy bus terminal in the capital city of Richmond before he was shot dead by two other troopers, police said. Two civilians also were shot but were expected to recover.

The trooper’s injuries were life-threatening, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

Initially, state police had said in a news release that two troopers were taken to a hospital, but Geller later told reporters that only one had been hurt.

Geller said the civilians’ injuries were not life-threatening.

A small army of law enforcement officers in tactical gear and dozens of cruisers and emergency response vehicles flooded to the station, located in an area that includes a minor league baseball stadium and a variety of commercial establishments and restaurants.

Officials: U.S. considers easing ban to help Iran

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration is considering easing financial restrictions that prohibit U.S. dollars from being used in transactions with Iran, U.S. officials said.

Angry lawmakers countered that Tehran would be getting

more than it deserves from last year’s nuclear accord.

While no final decision has been made, officials told The Associated Press the Treasury Department has prepared a general license permitting offshore financial institutions to access dollars for foreign currency trades in support of legitimate business with Iran, a practice that is currently illegal.

Several restrictions would apply, but the change could prove significant for Iran’s sanctions-battered economy.

California lawmakers OK statewide minimum wage

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California lawmakers on Thursday approved the nation’s highest statewide minimum wage of $15 an hour to take effect by 2022 after it was hailed by Democrats as an example to the nation as it struggles with a growing gap between rich and poor.

The legislation now goes to Gov. Jerry Brown, who said he will sign it into law Monday after previously working out the plan with labor unions.

Brown said the measure approved by the Legislature proves again that California can get things done and help people get ahead.

The state of New York was considering a similar move.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS MADISON, Wis. – Next Tuesday’s Wisconsin presidential primary is emerging as a crucial lifeline for Republicans desperate to stop Donald Trump’s march to their party’s nomination. One of his worst weeks of the 2016 campaign is colliding with a state already skeptical of his brash brand of politics.

A big loss for Trump in Wisconsin would greatly reduce his chances of securing the delegates he needs to clinch the GOP nomination before next July’s national convention. It also could offer new hope to rival Ted Cruz and outside groups that see Trump as a threat to the future of the Republican Party.

“I think the whole country is looking to Wisconsin right now to make a choice in this race, and I think the choice Wisconsin makes is going to have repercussions for a long time to come,” Cruz said Thursday in an interview with Milwaukee radio station WTMJ. Trump’s view is rosier for his own campaign: “If we win Wisconsin, it’s pretty much over.”

But almost nothing has gone right for him since Wisconsin stepped into the primary spotlight.

Even before he arrived, Trump was skewered in interviews with a trio of Wisconsin’s influential conservative talk radio hosts. On Tuesday, just hours before his first campaign stop, two-term Gov. Scott Walker threw his support behind Cruz, of Texas.

Much of the trouble that followed was of the Trump campaign’s own making. Corey Le-

wandowski, Trump’s campaign manager, got slapped with a charge of simple battery for an altercation with a reporter. Then Trump was forced to walk back his assertion that women should be punished for getting abortions, a comment that managed to unite both sides of the abortion debate in fierce opposition to his statement.

“As soon as he stepped foot in Wisconsin the mask finally came off,” said state Rep. Jim Steineke, the Republican majority leader in the Wisconsin Assembly. “Part of it is just the Wisconsin nice. We don’t take too kindly to people who act the way Donald Trump acts.”

GOP voter Linda Ruddy, a 48-year-old dental hygienist from Oshkosh, agreed.

“He’s rude. He’s arrogant. He’s a loose cannon. He’s insulting to women,” Ruddy said.

A poll run by Marquette University Law School has shown Trump holding steady at around 30 percent in Wisconsin, a level of support that gave him a lead in the state last month. But the latest survey released this week showed Cruz surging past the real estate mogul, topping him by 10 points.

“Everybody is going to want to write that he got taken down,” Cruz’s campaign manager Jeff Roe said of Trump. “The fact is he didn’t get taken down. The fact is that we’re consolidating.”

If Cruz sweeps all the delegates in Wisconsin, Trump will need to win 57 percent of the remaining delegates in other states to collect the 1,237 he needs to clinch the nomination.

So far, he has won 48 percent of all delegates awarded.

Budget fiasco won’t end without real leadership

Last week, Gov. Bruce Rauner said he’s trying to arrange a face-to-face meeting with House Speaker Michael Madigan to discuss how to solve the state’s budget impasse.

So far, Madigan hasn’t responded.

Madigan, the all-powerful leader of the Democratic Party, might be thinking he holds the upper hand. Candidates backed

by Madigan defeated Rauner-backed candidates in two primary elections March 15. The budget impasse will enter its 10th month later this week. Although some believed there might be some progress once the primary election was over, there doesn’t seem to be much momentum toward resolving the stalemate.

That’s unfortunate, since the impasse is seriously harming the state’s economy. Not only are state agencies and those that depend on state funding suffering, but nearly every business in the state is feeling the effects of this fiasco. Businesses are understandably reluctant to make investments or add jobs without knowing the impact of an eventual budget solution.

The situation isn’t going to get any easier. It’s estimated the state’s unpaid bill backlog will reach $10 billion by the end of June. And the beginning of the 2016-17 fiscal year is just a little more than three months away. It’s possible, some say probable, that Illinois could enter its second year in a row without a workable budget.

Both sides have been irresponsible.

Early on, Rauner focused too much on anti-union rhetoric, allowing good ideas like workers’ compensation reform and giving local governments more say in what can be bargained in contracts to become buried.

At the same time, Madigan and Democrats in the House and Senate have yet to propose a budget that is any way balanced. The General Assembly did pass a budget onto Rauner last spring, but it was at least $4 billion out of balance and included no tax or fee increases to make up the difference.

Until Madigan, Rauner and the rest of the General Assembly understand that this budget will require real solutions, and not politically-expedient ones, the debacle will continue. What’s needed is something that has been sorely lacking in Illinois government for years – statesmanship and leadership.

The Hilltoppers totaled three hits in their two previous games, both losses, and were no-hit in one.

Drake Fellows made sure it would be different in Thursday’s matchup against Minooka in the opening round of the WJOL/Don Ladas Memorial Baseball Tournament at Gillespie Field.

Fellows, who bats left-handed, belted a two-run home run, his first of the season, off Indians senior right-hander Joe Butler in the top of the first inning

to give himself a 2-0 lead, and the Hilltoppers went on to secure a 13-3 victory in five innings.

Butler did get some revenge in the bottom of the first as he doubled home a run off Fellows, then scored himself on Logan O’Brien’s infield hit to make it 2-2.

But JCA exploded for six runs in the third, four of which were unearned, to go up 8-2, and that provided more than enough breathing room for Fellows. Jack Surin and Fellows had RBI singles in the big inning, and after a two-out throwing error kept the inning alive, Joe Buhay capped the uprising with a three-run double to deep left-center field.

“It felt good. That one was all barrel,” said Buhay, who had been called out on strikes his first at-bat. “He (assistant coach Tony Giese) told me I had to protect, especially with two strikes.

So I went up there and battled. He (Butler) is a good guy and a good pitcher.”

“Joe made a mistake on Fellows’ homer, but I was thrilled we bounced back and got the two runs right away,” Minooka coach Jeff Petrovic said. “We proved we don’t need to be intimidated. Down the road we will see more Division I pitchers. We minimized the strikeouts, put the ball in play.

“We’re a young team that’s still learning. That one error that kept their big inning going really, really hurt.

That’s the second time the same thing happened against a big program – the other was when we lost to Providence.

But there were some positive things for us today.”

Minooka (3-3) will face Joliet West in the 9 a.m. Saturday consolation semifinal at JCA, while the Hilltoppers (4-3) will tangle with Lockport in the championship semifinal at 11:30.

“Considering what we did the last couple games, when we were no-hit against Naperville Central and did not look good offensively against Marmion, this was a lot better,” JCA coach Jared Voss said.

Madej makes amends as Providence wins

Shaw Media Correspondent NEW LENOX – Providence second baseman Mike Madej had a interesting sixth inning in the first quarterfinal in the WJOL/Don Ladas Memorial baseball tournament.

With two outs and Lincoln-Way West third baseman Ryan Hastings on second base, the usually sure-handed Madej booted a smash off the bat of Warriors second baseman Tyler Dallio. The rare error scored Hastings, who had doubled, to tie the score at 2.

In the bottom half of the inning, with one out, Madej stepped into the batter’s box. Making up for his miscue, he deposited a fastball from Warriors starting pitcher Connor Lowman over the left-field fence.

With two outs, Matt Waznis, who was 3 for 3, hammered a high drive that left Tom Dedin Field just inside the right field foul pole. Side-winding

closer Matt Trzesnewski slammed the door on the Warriors 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to nail down the victory for Celtics starter Connor Creed as Providence survived, 4-2.

“After I hit the home run, I felt good to have made up for my error,” Madej said. “On the error, the ball was hit hard, but I let it play me.

“This was a big win for us, after the loss to Oak Park this week. After our first two easy wins, it was a good wakeup call. We might have been a little overconfident entering what could be a historic season for us.”

“I am really hitting the ball well to start the season,” Waznis said. “On the home run, I knew I hit the ball well, but I was surprised it stayed fair. This was a big win. This is a great tournament and we would like to win it again.”

Creed, who made his first start, allowed one earned run on five hits with six strikeouts in six innings.

“I didn’t pitch much last year,”

Creed said. “I am very happy with my performance today in my first start.

My slider was really working well. We are looking forward to moving on to the semifinals on Saturday.”

In the second inning for Providence (3-1), designated hitter Jackson Dvorak and Waznis each singled with nobody out. With one out, Brendan O’Hara put the Celtics up, 2-0, when he ripped a two-run double.

“It was great to get us on the board right away,” O’Hara said. “I hit the ball well and we have to continue to jump on teams early.”

Lincoln-Way West (3-2) got on the board in the top of the third on an RBI groundout off the bat of first baseman Matt Monahan. Joe Paparelli, who had walked, scored the run.

In the top of the sixth, with one out, Hastings ripped a double and tied the score on Madej’s miscue.

Lowman went the distance for Lincoln-Way West but was the hard-luck

loser.

Warriors’ leadoff man Adam Knerr had two singles.

“Providence is a very good team,” Lowman said. “I pitched OK, but we can’t win them all. We’ll have to bounce back on Saturday.”

The Warriors will play at Providence in a consolation semifinal at 9 a.m. Saturday against the Plainfield Central-Joliet Central loser.

Providence will meet the Plainfield Central-Joliet Central winner at 11:30 a.m.

“It was a good win, but we still made too many mistakes,” Providence coach Mark Smith said. “Connor (Creed), was outstanding on the mound. Brendan O’Hara got us the early lead. Mike Madej and Matt Waznis did what seniors have done for us.

“Matt is the best unsigned senior in the state of Illinois. There has to be a college baseball program out there that could use Matt’s talent.”

Fellows (3-0) allowed five hits, two to O’Brien, in the game halted after five innings because of the 10-run rule. He struck out six, walked four and hit one.

If that ranks as a subpar outing, there might be a good reason – for Fellows and for Butler. The two pitchers were warmed up, but moments before game time, the rains came and delayed the start for 31 minutes.

“I always get nervous when you have a situation where the pitcher gets ready and then he’s got to stop,” Voss said. “Drake has a routine he wants to follow.

Then when we’re the visitor and he’s up fourth in the first inning, it gets all the more difficult.”

“It was tough,” Fellows said. “I was warm and ready and then the rain hit. Even without that, it was a tough day to pitch, with the wind blowing in your face and the muddy conditions on the mound. It was a good hitter’s day and a tough pitching day.”

Fellows said he had not faced Butler previously, but has seen plenty of his style of pitcher.

“He throws hard, in the mid-to-upper 80s, which is nothing new to me,” Fellows said. “I faced that all last summer in the places I played.”

Fellows had a homer and single, three RBIs and two walks in a perfect day at the plate. Surin chipped in three of JCA’s nine hits, including a double. Jake Naal delivered a two-run pinch single in JCA’s five-run fifth.

Dan Devine singled home two runs and KC Simonich had a single, reached three times and scored all three times.

“This game was huge for us because the last couple games as a team we couldn’t swing the bat for anything,” Surin said. “The best part about it is we did it against a good pitcher. Drake started us off right with the home run, and we got more clutch hits after that.”

Stevens, Lockport ride early lead to victory

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – You don’t finish a baseball game with 15 hits and not get contributions up and down the lineup.

That was the first point Lockport coach Andy Satunas emphasized Thursday after the Porters closed out a 9-5 victory over SouthWest Suburban Blue rival Joliet West in the opening round of the WJOL/Don Ladas Memorial Tournament at Gillespie Field on the Joliet Catholic campus.

“I’m very proud of our whole order,” Satunas said. “We’ve been talking about everyone playing their role, and the guys were embracing it today. We’ve talked about selflessness and whatever you can do to help your brother.”

Lockport (2-1) advanced to Saturday’s 11:30 a.m. championship semifinal at Gillespie Field against JCA. West (3-4) will face Minooka at 9 a.m. in the consolation semifinal.

Lockport opened the game with a bang, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning and four in the second by using different but equally effective

methods.

In the first, Jake Huber, Anthony Cocco and Nick Strysik belted long doubles to account for the two runs off West starter and loser Matt Meier.

In the second, it was time for some small ball. Steven Salvino, Gavin Lovesky and Huber had successive bunt singles, with Salvino and Huber driving in runs. Cocco chipped in a run-scoring single and Stephen Hill’s groundout knocked in a run.

“We’re a young team, and our three things coming out here were to play hard, be good teammates and have fun,” West coach John Karczewski said. “We’re not getting some things right.”

Karczewski said allowing the bunt singles is part of how “we aren’t playing with a sense of urgency. We’re not doing a great job holding runners close to the bags, either, and that hurt us.”

Despite the shortcomings, however, the Tigers battled back from deficits of 8-0 and 9-1 to make it interesting.

“We were one batter away from making it a one-run game,” Karczewski said.

Satunas can relate.

“I can’t tell you how many times I’ve woken up in cold sweats dreaming about the battles we have had through the years with West,” he said. “They keep coming at you.”

Salvino and Joe McGuire each had three of Lockport’s 15 hits, and both were in the bottom third of the batting order. Lovesky had two hits, including a triple, and a sacrifice fly. Cocco also had two hits. Everyone in the lineup hit safely at least once.

“They put the ball in play and hit it hard,” Karczewski said of the Porters.

Lovesky has been moved this season from the middle of the order to the leadoff spot “because it gets him up sooner and because of the way it spreads out our lineup,” Satunas explained.

With 6-foot-7 senior right-hander Mike Stevens dealing the way he was, the Porters’ 15-hit attack provided plenty of offensive support.

Stevens, who has pitched in all three Lockport games to date, went five innings, with three relievers coming in to work the final two innings. Stevens was perfect through 21/3 innings and allowed only an unearned run on two hits. He struck out five.

“Michael got the leadoff man out the first four innings,” Satunas said. “That right there is a recipe for success. And in three of the first four innings, he threw 13 pitches or less. He’s a senior now. That’s the kind of thing we expect from him.”

“It was a good game for me,” Stevens said. “With us scoring the runs we did, it made it a heck of a lot easier.

My job was to throw strikes and not worry about strikeouts. I know my defense is behind me.”

Stevens said he felt his curveball was his best pitch. “My velocity was down a little on the fastball, but that might be because of the way the wind was blowing out,” he said.

Satunas stopped short of calling Stevens the Porters’ No. 1 pitcher, but he is in contention. “We have guys still fighting for spots,” he said. “I like that.”

West finished with five hits, including an Alex Tibble triple. Breven Daugherity singled twice, Tyler Spisak had an RBI infield single and Kory Hayden singled. But whatever offense the Tigers could muster was too little, too late.

Joliet Central claims big win over Plainfield Central

cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Joliet Central’s baseball team claimed a win Thursday that was significant in a couple of different ways.

The Steelmen’s 6-2 victory over Plainfield Central in the WJOL Don Ladas Memorial Tournament at Providence’s Tom Dedin Field was their first in the opener of the event since the district split.

But perhaps just as important for coach Kevin Fitzgerald’s squad was the fact that their second win of the season not only came against a Wildcat team that had been playing well, but also presented a good blueprint for them to enjoy more success this year.

The Steelmen combined a good pitching effort with timely hitting and nice execution in the field to advance to Saturday’s 11:30 a.m. semifinal against Providence on the Celtics’ field.

Tyler Lawson got the complete-game

win for the Steelmen (2-3), while catcher Tom Langley started a four-run second inning and ended his team’s scoring with a two-run blast in the fifth.

“Coach (Tony) Juarez always says make the everyday play every day and that means a lot to our guys, and we didn’t have any errors,” Steelmen coach Kevin Fitzgerald said. “We did an outstanding job of hitting with two outs and took advantage of the fastballs they threw and hit them hard. Tyler really set the tone and hopefully he’ll do that for us the rest of the year. He only threw 85 to 90 pitches and had two walks and two strikeouts. We trust our defense and our infield played great and guys like Jomare McNair were flying all over the place.

“I’m just very proud of our guys for getting our first WJOL win since the split. We told our guys after we beat Rich Central, 16-7, that this is the type of team that we can be since we have the offense to do some good things. And to see a team that was 5-1 and playing

great baseball and for us to be in control for the whole game was a nice job.

These guys build off of one another.

The Steelmen got all of the runs they needed in the second when they scored four times on five hits.

Langley (2 for 3) led off with a single and Jesus Gonzalez ran for him before Ricky Malmfeldt (2 for 3) followed with a double. Jomare McNair got an RBI blooper and then with two outs, Jawan Cooper drove in two more with a single to make it 3-0.

It nearly became a 6-0 game when Luke Debenedetti smacked a shot to left that looked like it bounced off the netting outside of the fence before landing back in play. But the umpire ruled that the ball never left the park and it merely resulted in the fourth run of the frame.

“Everybody was in this game, all game,” Langley said. “Hitting-wise, we did very well. We were getting jumps

off the ball defensively and people were making great plays out there. And we all have confidence when Tyler’s out there. But we also have confidence in our whole team. We know how good we are and how well that we can do this year. And we all get along very well and we always know how to connect with each other.”

The Wildcats (5-2) got a run in the third, but could have had more if not for a big defensive play. With one out, Kyle Cockrell slapped a shot to center that looked like it would fall in but McNair made a long run and dove to make the catch. Zach Krueger and Matt Bunetta (4 for 4) singled before Brandon Callender (2 for 2) got an RBI hit to left.

After Lawson retired the next seven hitters in order, the Wildcats added two more runs in the fifth when Ryan King walked and Langley followed with a two-run homer to left center field.

Minooka Junior High celebrates state championship

Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – The Minooka Junior High School eighth-grade volleyball team took center stage at an assembly last week to celebrate its season.

“This was amazing. And all of the support these girls received shows a lot about the community, parents, students and coaches. They do what’s best for the kids. This will be an accomplishment these girls will never forget.” Minooka Junior High athletic director Adrianne McKerrow said at the March 24 event.

Dubbed the “comeback queens” by coach Coral Berta, the eighth-grade volleyball team clinched the IESA Class 8-4A state championship title March 22 in Rochester.

“This feels amazing to be a part of a team like this; it’s the perfect way to end the eighth-grade season,” team captain Zoey Seput said.

The team went 23-2 this season, which Berta credited to the fact that most of the girls played last season together, giving them extra training and a strong unity on and off the court.

“These girls came into this year with a fire and a desire,” Berta said.

“From the start, they knew my expectations of them and that on the court and in practice everyone needed to work.”

Berta said it was big for the team to have home-court advantage in a playoff game after a heavy travel schedule.

“This was a travel year for us,” Berta said. “We only had five home games, but the girls overcame that hurdle, and

the fact that we could win on the road all the times we did was amazing.”

In the first round of state play, Minooka went up against Liberty Middle School out of Edwardsville. Minooka had a difficult match because of different playing styles, but scored a 25-18,

23-25, 25-22 victory.

“Liberty was a tough game,” Seput said. “I told our team that we had to leave it all on the line and that this was our moment. We were down five points in the last game and came back and won.”

The rallying spirit was what made Berta, assisted by Chris Lincoln on the sideline, coin the team the “comeback queens.”

“They were down so many times, but they never gave up. I told them to hold their heads high and not show emotion to the other team,” she said.

Minooka went in aggressive and confident into the next round against Parker Junior High out of Flossmoor and swept in two games, 25-10 and 25-18, to secure their spot in the state championship game.

On March 22, the team and more than 120 fans trekked to Rochester and the bleachers became a sea of white and blue. Summit Hill Junior High from Frankfort was the opponent.

“I told the girls to play Minooka ball, which means to play clean, take risks and run plays,” Berta said.

The girls did just that, beating Summit hill in two games, 25-18 and 25-17.

“This was a great experience because our team was a close group this year,” Seput said. “The fans were awesome and that last game felt so good.

Once we won, we all jumped up and hugged each other.”

Keith’s short fuse puts Hawks in tough spot

mlazerus@suntimes.com Technically speaking, Trevor van Riemsdyk is replacing Duncan Keith in the lineup for however long his suspension lasts. He’ll be on the top pairing with Niklas Hjalmarsson, he’ll get extended minutes, he’ll see more time on special teams.

In reality, six or seven guys will be trying to fill those skates.

“It’ll be a group of us stepping up, it won’t be just one guy filling in for Duncs,” van Riemsdyk said. “He does too many special things and he’s too great of a player for one guy to come in and fill his void.”

Keith’s immediate future still is uncertain, as no date has yet been set for his hearing with the Department of Player Safety to discuss his stick-swinging incident Tuesday in Minnesota. He’s likely to be suspended for more than five games, meaning it’ll spill into the postseason. But exactly how many playoff games will he miss? Will he appeal such a decision?

And how will the Blackhawks manage without him?

These are all questions for another day. As for Thursday, Keith declined to speak to reporters, leaving his teammates and coach to speak for him. It’s Keith’s third suspension in four years – he was banned five games for elbowing Vancouver’s Daniel Sedin in 2012, and he was banned one game for a similar stick-swinging incident against Los Angeles’ Jeff Carter during the 2013 Western Conference final.

Keith’s always played with an edge, and he’s always had a short fuse. One memorable incident occurred during

Carter had slashed Keith’s hand as he reached for his dropped glove. And Minnesota’s Charlie Coyle knocked Keith down, prompting him to deliver the one-handed slash across the face from his back.

Does that make Keith a dirty player? Or does he simply need to do a better job of keeping his emotions in check? Joel Quenneville danced around the topic.

“We always talk about discipline

as a team,” Quenneville said. “We feel we’re pretty strong in that area. We deal with it the right way, and we feel going forward we have to be smart about how we play on the ice, how we react to different situations, and [make sure] we don’t hurt the team. … His competitiveness is part of what makes him a great player. I just think that being smart, and knowing the limit, is what we have to deal with.”

Michal Rozsival, who played a season-high 22:13 on Tuesday in the wake of Keith’s ejection, stood by his teammate.

“Things happen in the game,” Rozsival said. “It’s a physical game, and I still don’t believe he was trying to hit him in the head. Sometimes you swing your stick, you try to slash a guy, but I still think he didn’t aim for his head.”

“I didn’t really do much,” Lawson said. “They put the ball into play but we made off the plays. The offense definitely backed me up and I just threw strikes and did my job and everyone else did theirs. Last year when I pitched against them, we got blown out 14-0, so I was excited to come back this year. We’re like a family and everyone knows each others tendencies and we trust each other. Defensively and offensively, we have each others backs.”

The Wildcats scored their other run in the seventh when Cockrell got a two-out hit and then came home on Krueger’s single to right. They loaded the bases to bring the tying run to the plate but Lawson coaxed another long fly out to end things.

“They made some plays defensively that kept them in the ball game and we didn’t come up with timely hitting,” Wildcats coach John Rosner said. “Before today, we were happy with how well we’ve executed and how well we’ve pitched it and played defense.

We’ve done some good things so far and I was hoping to go into Saturday with a couple of our better arms on the mound. But they drove in their guys and we left our guys on base.”

Baltz, a former Joliet resident, recently completed an eight-day film shoot for an untitled NBC pilot, which was written by Charlie Grandy and executive produced and directed by Amy Poehler.

He played Prince Marco, the middle Faber child in the fictitious country of Modaria. Prince Marco – the good child who obeys the rules – becomes jealous of his rebellious older brother when the brother returns home and wants to change the family dynamics.

When Baltz saw the script, he immediately knew how to play it.

“With other roles, I prepare as best I can and then go in and show them what I have. If someone else has a different interpretation, so be it,’ Baltz said. “But I felt really comfortable

with this one.”

From City of Steel to Second City

When Baltz first fell in love with the concept of improvisation (“I love making people laugh,” he said), he never dreamed he’d live in Los Angeles, California, his current home.

“Chicago was intimidating enough,” Baltz said.

But after graduating from Loyola University-Chicago, Baltz began taking classes at Second City, eventually performing in two revues with Second City and winning a 2011 Jeff Award for Best Actor in a Revue.

In 2011, Baltz also shot a web show called “Shrink,” about a man who performs clinical therapy out of his garage to maintain his medical license, Baltz said.

Then in 2012, Baltz participated in “Just for Laughs,” a comedy festival in Montreal, Canada. When that ended, Baltz looked his future in the face and asked himself, “What will I do?”

“I ultimately had to make plans for something else,’ Baltz said. “I couldn’t stay at Second City forever.”

It’s the rare actor, Baltz said, who can remain in Chicago and earn livable income through commercials and theater. Baltz took a realistic perspective.

“If I wanted to continue doing it [acting], I’d have to look elsewhere,” Baltz said.

Go west, young man

In late 2012, Baltz went to Los Angeles to shoot commercials for U.S. Cellular and began meeting with general managers of television networks that were seeking fresh talent. It took time for Baltz to devise the most effective ways to showcase himself.

“I didn’t know what I was doing.

I had so many bad meetings,” Baltz said. “You literally sit in front of someone you’ve never met for half an hour and talk about yourself.”

But Baltz kept at it. If there’s any

proverbial secret for success, Baltz said it’s to follow every opportunity, be nice and show appreciation to those people who are part of the process.

In 2013, Baltz moved to Los Angeles for good. He currently appears on “Bajillion Dollar Propertie$,” which premiered March 17 on the streaming comedy channel Seeso, which Baltz likened to “NBC’s version of Netflix.”

“It’s like “Million Dollar Properties,’” Baltz said of the show, calling it a “mockumentory.”

Whether or not NBC picks up the pilot – that won’t be announced until mid-May, Baltz said – Baltz’s goal is to keep working in the entertainment industry.

“I come from a family and a town that works very hard,” Baltz said.

“I think it’s [Joliet] is a great place with good people from varying backgrounds and points of view. I’ve toured all over the country – I think I’ve seen 45 states on tour – and I was never not proud to be from Joliet.”

Technique relieves muscle tension Dear Dr. K: A friend mentioned something called the Alexander Technique, which is supposed to help relieve tension. Can you tell me more about it?

Dear Reader: I didn’t know much about the Alexander Technique until I received your question. So I did some homework. I consulted with Dr. Eva Selhub, who is an internal medicine doctor and clinical associate at the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine.

The Alexander Technique is named for a Shakespearean actor named Frederick Matthias Alexander. In the 1890s, he set out to discover why he often lost his voice when he performed. He realized onstage, he contracted the muscles in his upper body so strongly his entire posture changed. He wondered if his voice loss could result from his disrupted posture.

His guess turned out to be correct. When he was able to release the tension in his muscles with a variety of movements, his voice loss resolved. He also was able to change his habit of contracting his neck.

These discoveries have been codified into the Alexander Technique (AT). Today, AT teaches people how to let go of tension in the body. This enables the body to move with ease and minimal effort.

AT is used to treat a variety of conditions, from musculoskeletal pain and breathing problems to voice loss and sleep disorders. Many musicians, dancers, singers and actors use AT to help enhance their performance.

You don’t have to be a performer to benefit. For example, just using your smartphone frequently can cause problems that may benefit from the technique. Here’s what I mean: Your vertebrae were designed to support your head looking straight ahead. But if you constantly look down to check your smart-

AT can teach you how hold your phone and how to position your head. Ultimately, you will learn to re-establish better posture and ease in your body.

Research supports the use of AT to help treat neck and back pain. One recent study found AT lessons led to significant reductions in neck pain over 12 months, compared with usual care. Another study found AT lessons plus exercise helped relieve chronic or recurrent back pain more effectively than standard care or massage.

If you’re interested in AT lessons, the American Society for the Alexander Technique can help you find an instructor.

In addition, many complementary and alternative medicine practices have therapists familiar with the technique. If not, they usually can route you to people in your community who can help.

Some doctors have dismissed the Alexander Technique because they label it “alternative” medicine. However, other doctors have subjected it to scientific evaluation – and found it valuable. That’s the more reasonable and constructive approach to any medical practice, when a large number of people have found it has helped them.

This week, we are looking at slam bidding. In Italy, it is considered the greatest crime of the game to miss a slam. If there is the faintest aroma of a slam wafting around the table, Italians will dabble their toes in the slam waters -- as South did in this deal from that European country.

After North made a game-invitational limit raise, South was optimistic in making any sort of slam suggestion. He had six losers (two spades, three hearts and one diamond), which suggested settling for game. (With only five losers, it would have been reasonable to make a control-bid.) Here, though, South, after making a four-club control-bid and hearing North cooperate with a four-diamond control-bid, signed off in four spades, announcing to partner, the opponents and the bartender that he did not have a heart control. As North lacked one as well, he passed.

West, not deaf to the auction, led the heart six. East won with his jack (bottom of touching honors when playing third hand high), cashed his ace and king, then led his last heart.

What should South have done?

Who had the spade queen? The clue was East’s initial pass. If he had the spade queen as well as all those heart honors, he surely would have opened the bidding. So South ruffed the fourth heart with his spade ace, then ran the spade jack through West. When the finesse worked, declarer took a second spade finesse, drew West’s last trump, and claimed.
