Guilty verdict in fatal stabbing Jury convicts Joliet man of 2014 laundry room slaying

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet man could spend the rest of his life in prison after being found guilty Tuesday of stabbing a woman to death two years ago in an Evergreen Terrace laundry room.

Jurors took about an hour after hearing closing arguments to convict Drumaine S. McKinley, 37, of first-degree murder for the Sept.

3, 2014, death of Joslyn Woods.

As he had for much of the seven-day trial, McKin- Drumaine S. ley showed little reaction McKinley while seated at the defense table when Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes announced the verdict that seven men and five women had reached.

Woods, 20, and McKinley had arranged a paid sexual encounter online and met about 6:20 a.m. at 363 N. Broad-

way St. after exchanging text messages.

They went into the laundry room and had sex before there was a dispute over money, and Woods brought out a knife, which McKinley used to stab her repeatedly, according to trial testimony.

“What actually happened that caused a knife to be produced?” Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Kathryn Tinich asked jurors. “Only two people really know. One’s not here, and the other’s statements are self-serving.”

McKinley did not take the stand during his trial, but because of statements he made during his arrest and subsequent interview with detectives, jurors could have considered finding him guilty of second-degree murder because he feared for his own life and safety while being robbed.

“He told detective [Carlos] Matlock he was in survival mode,” Assistant Public Defender Dana Jakusz said. “He knew she was a prostitute. He didn’t know her intentions.”

“You see her [backed] up against that wall with a look of pure terror,” Tinich said. “The belief that he had any fear for his own personal safety is ludicrous. He was always between her and the door.

She has her purse ... she’s leaving. He was clear of any danger there may have been, but he came back.”

A forensic pathologist who performed Woods’ autopsy testified last week she had been stabbed too many times to count.

“You rarely have a videotape that can show the jury just how brutal and heinous [the murder] was,” State’s Attorney James Glasgow said.

McKinley faces at least 20 years behind bars, but the jury’s finding that Woods’ death was a “brutal and heinous act” means he could get life in prison when he is sentenced in May.

Judge finds attorney guilty of trying to have wife killed

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A judge on Tuesday found a Homer Glen attorney guilty of trying to hire someone to kill his estranged wife while he was locked up in the Will County jail.

Robert W. Gold-Smith, 53, a bankruptcy attorney who has been rep- Robert resenting him- Gold-Smith self, appeared stunned and saddened by Judge Daniel Rozak’s verdict after a bench trial earlier this year. Gold-Smith silently turned away from the bench and shook his head “no” as the judge issued the decision.

Gold-Smith and his former wife, Victoria Smith, were going through a contentious divorce in 2010 when he allegedly punched her outside a courtroom. When he was put in jail in March 2011 on

charges of violating an order of protection, he approached a handful of inmates and offered to pay for her death, according to trial testimony.

Career criminal Brian K. McDaniel agreed to wear a wire for Will County sheriff’s investigators to get a deal in his own case, but Gold-Smith argued McDaniel impersonated his whispering voice.

Rozak let it be known during pretrial hearings he had “issues with the recording,” but said Tuesday it was not the only evidence he considered in making his decision.

“I’ve got probably close to 30 hours considering all this evidence. That’s not an exaggeration,” the judge said.

Rozak noted there are some differences in what he was able to hear on the recording and the transcript of the recording that was submitted to the court.

Gold-Smith faces up to 40 years in prison. After Rozak announced he was guilty on both counts of solicitation of murder, Gold-Smith appeared dazed and did not realize he shocked some of the courtroom audience by making a common request.

Leslie Munger: Illinois government is running out of money

JOLIET – The average taxpayer doesn’t operate on a multibillion-dollar budget, so it’s probably difficult to wrap one’s head around the state’s fiscal nightmare, Illinois Comptroller Leslie Munger told members of the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry on Tuesday.

Imagine, if you would, Munger said: $7,000 in bills on the kitchen table, $2,000 in bills in the mail, $110,000 in credit card debt and $100 in your bank account for daily spending.

Illinois is grappling with that same ratio, she said, but tack on six additional zeroes at the end of those figures.

“That’s no way to run a state,” she said.

As comptroller, Munger writes the checks for expenses such as payroll, vendors’ services and pension obligations.

The state income tax rolled back to 3.75 percent in January, resulting in about $5 billion less in annual revenue, Munger said. At the same time, unpaid bills stand at $7.3 billion, and Illinois will owe $400 million in interest and late fees by this fiscal year’s end.

JJC board approves tuition increase

Hike to take effect in fall, will cover projected deficits, college initiatives

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Most of the Joliet Junior College Board of Trustees supported a student tuition increase that will take effect this fall semester.

The proposal from the JJC administration to increase tuition by $10 was approved, 5-2, at Tuesday’s board meeting. Board Trustee Michael O’Connell was absent.

The increase will raise the total tuition and fee rate from $115 to $125.

JJC officials said the tuition increase for fiscal 2017 is needed to cover projected budget deficits, as well as funding priorities for a federal grant, City Center Campus and marketing costs.

Board Vice Chairman Andrew Mihelich and Trustee Patricia Deiters voted against the tuition increase as being too high.

However, Trustee Maureen Broderick, who supported the proposal, expressed concern about the ongoing state budget stalemate, which has created a crisis among universities and colleges that receive state money.

“If we’re going to ask [the students] to sacrifice more money, we need to look internally … and see how we can reallocate funds so that we don’t have to continue to raise tuition or increase taxes,” Morales said.

Other board members supporting the tuition increase were Board Chairman Robert Wunderlich, Trustee Daniel O’Connell and Student Trustee Saleh Ruman.

Ruman told the board he wanted to confirm again the student support for the tuition increase. He said the college’s student government gave full support for the measure.

Eric Wilhelmi, JJC student government president, told trustees at a Feb. 23 board workshop meeting that the organization supported it but he said he could not give a definitive answer on feedback from the student body as a whole.

Ruman said a survey of more than 100 students on the tuition proposal was done and that a majority of them supported it.

“After the facts were given, the students understand the need for the increase, so we support it,” he said.

The last tuition increase for JJC students was for the fall 2014 semester, at $4 a credit hour. The tuition, student fee and technology fee remained the same between fiscal 2013 and 2014, but the capital assessment fee increased from $17 to $21.

Shorewood Burger King getting modern look

vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – Shorewood trustees on Tuesday approved plans for a complete face-lift of the Burger King restaurant at Route 59 and Jefferson Street that would beautify the building and bring it up to date with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The refresh project will update the fast-food restaurant’s exterior and interior look to the national chain’s current brand. There will be alterations to the building facades and signage on the building.

Sidewalks, entrances and the parking lot also would be worked on. Community Development Director Karen James said a unique part of the project lies in the building’s materials.

“This is the first time we have a Nichiha product come in [to Shorewood],” James said. Nichiha is a fiber-cement exterior siding product.

Lenny McEnery came back to the village board Tuesday to request an amendment allowing a change to pro-

pane tank storage on the controversial gas station and car wash development.

The gas station is under construction at the intersection of Route 52 and River Road, but it is nearing the end stages of development, McEnery said.

The change relocates the propane dispenser and filling area to the north end of the development near a detention pond across the delivery access street to the gas station. It would be covered by an enclosure, matching the architectural elements of a shed or refuse enclosure that would be located just across the access drive.

Trustee Dan Anderson said he was concerned about conflict with the proximity of the propane tank from the shed.

The state fire marshal requires propane tanks to be a minimum of 15 feet from a building. But the shed is closer than that and could be considered a building because it can store items, Anderson said.

The village board unanimously approved the site plan amendment, subject to state fire marshal inspection, because it concerned only the propane tank enclosure.

Republicans vie for party nod in Will County Board Dist. 13

PLAINFIELD – Three Republican candidates are vying for their party’s nomination in the Will County Board District 13 race during next week’s primary.

Yvonne Bolton, 57, of Plainfield, will face off against Tim Kraulidis, 49, a sitting Plainfield Township Republicans chairman, and Brenda Morse, a 53-year-old former wireless technical support engineer who now owns a horse boarding facility in Minooka.

Republican County Board member Liz Collins of Plainfield is stepping down from her seat at the end of her term.

Her departure leaves her seat open to newcomers, who will not have the challenge of running against an incumbent.

The board has 26 members – two seats in each of the 13 districts.

The district includes the townships of Plainfield, Lockport and Wheatland.

JOLIET TOWNSHIP – Two men were shot in an ambush during a drug deal early Tuesday, according to police.

The incident occurred shortly before 12:19 a.m. on Marcella Avenue, when a 911 call brought Will County sheriff’s police.

According to sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer, a vehicle pulled up at the home, and two people exited and opened fire.

Deputies found a 28-year-old man, who had been shot multiple times, lying on the ground outside his residence, Hoffmeyer said.

Police reports indicate the victim was conscious when paramedics arrived. He was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet and

later airlifted to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood in critical condition.

Hoffmeyer said he appears to have been the intended target.

Additionally, a 33-year-old man visiting the home to buy illegal drugs was struck in the abdomen while sitting in his vehicle and fled the scene before deputies arrived, Hoffmeyer said.

That man later arrived at a hospital for treatment and was released into investigators’ custody, Hoffmeyer said.

Sheriff’s deputies canvassed the neighborhood and obtained a vehicle description that was broadcast to other police agencies. At 1:14 a.m., Joliet police stopped a vehicle at State and Jackson streets, and turned two men over to sheriff’s police for questioning.

No charges had been filed as of 4 p.m. Tuesday, but the “persons of interest” remained in custody, Hoffmeyer said.

Joliet D-86 responds to complaints of delayed alert on teacher charge

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Some local parents said they wanted to be notified more quickly by Joliet Public Schools District 86 about the arrest of a Dirksen Junior High School teacher whom authorities have accused of raping a student.

At 4:22 p.m. Monday, a post on the district’s Facebook page announced the allegation and arrest of a Dirksen teacher, whom police have identified as Kyle R. Camp, 36, of Minooka.

Camp was arrested Friday and charged with one count of predatory criminal sexual assault.

Some parents expressed disappointment by commenting on the district’s Facebook post that they learned of the incident Monday rather than Friday and had to read about it through media reports.

“Disappointed that this message is now coming out to the public. It is too late,” one message read. “Too late for the parents and too late for the children on their social media sites already blasting this.”

District 86 spokeswoman Sandy Zalewski said school officials received a complaint Friday about Camp and immediately notified police. District officials did not find out about his arrest until late Sunday evening, she said.

“Anytime there is a complaint, we take it seriously here at the district.

We don’t notify our families until there is an arrest,” she said.

She said a broadcast telephone call was sent Monday afternoon to Dirksen families and district staff, along with social media alerts.

Joliet Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner has said a Joliet West High School liaison officer was approached by the older sister of a friend of the victim and asked detectives to investigate.

When officers arrived at the school Friday, they learned Camp already had been removed by the administration earlier that day and escorted from the grounds. Camp was located at his home in Minooka, arrested and taken to the Grundy County Jail.

Roechner did not immediately return calls Tuesday afternoon. He said Monday the investigation is open and that other charges may be pending.

Zalewski said district officials received a phone call from Joliet West about allegations against Camp, immediately contacted Joliet police and the Department of Children and Family Services, and then removed Camp from school grounds.

A letter from Superintendent Charles Coleman sent Tuesday to Dirksen families said Camp’s alleged conduct is shocking to the district and falls outside the core values and expectations held for all staff members.

“District 86 continually strives to create a safe and caring learning environment for all students and student safety is our top priority,” Coleman stated in the letter.

The district on Tuesday made available access to counselors and social workers for any student who needed it. The district also has said students and parents who might have information related to the investigation should contact Joliet police directly, while those with other concerns should contact the Dirksen principal’s office.

CHANNAHON – After more than 20 months of public hearings and planning, the new affordable independent living center for seniors, St. Elizabeth Residences, has passed muster with the Channahon Village Board and is on its way to development.

The board Monday approved an annexation and development agreement with Bishop J. Peter Sartain of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Joliet; new zoning regulations for Channahon’s Town Center; and a special-use permit for a planned unit development that will allow the project to proceed, pending staff approval of engineering.

“I have no doubt that this will fill up very fast,” Channahon Director of Community Development Mike Petrick said after the meeting.

Petrick said the internal process to get the housing project through Village Hall took a lot of work. Changes had to be made in many village documents, he said, and public hearings were required for most of those changes.

“The process has been very interactive with the community,” he said. “It’s been encouraging to see the interest in it.”

Steven Gaydos, fiscal director of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Joliet, said in a previous Village Board meeting that helping the elderly is a large part of the budget of Catholic Charities. The estimated $14 million project will be privately funded.

“There is a real lack of affordable senior rental housing in this community,” Gaydos said.

The project could break ground in early summer.

Channahon Trustee Scott Slocum voted against all three of the measures, saying later he had several concerns with the documents. He was the only

Applicants also will be sorted by income tiers. Of the 48 rental units, five will be reserved for seniors whose annual income is 30 percent of the area’s median, or $15,960 for one person and $18,240 for two. Seventeen units will be for those at 60 percent of the area’s median income, or $31,920 for one person and $36,480 for two.

A list will be made of applicants; then, at various times during the year, all on the list will be ranked by the point system and considered.

The residences are planned for the village’s Town Center, just west of St. Ann Catholic Church. The complex will include a mixture of one- and two-bedroom apartments in four three-story buildings. Each apartment will have its own attached one-car garage. There also will be a clubhouse with an apartment that will house a live-in manager.

Separately, at Monday’s board meeting, it was announced that the cost of refuse stickers will increase May 1 from $1.50 to $1.75.

Construction underway on Hope Manor Joliet

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Construction is starting on Hope Manor Joliet, a veterans housing project being developed on the old Silver Cross Hospital campus.

A section of old parking lot outside the former hospital has been fenced off, and a construction trailer is on the site.

Only two workers were there Tuesday, but one said excavation crews were expected as soon as this week.

“We consider ourselves already in construction,” said Nancy Hughes Moyer, chief executive officer for Volunteers of America Illinois.

Construction is expected to take about a year.

“We’re slated to actually start leasing the first units in February 2017,” Moyer said.

The nonprofit organization, which has built Hope Manor I and II in Chicago, is building the veterans housing complex in Joliet. It will consist of four buildings and 67 apartments.

Volunteers of America provides

housing for veterans who are homeless or in need of assistance. Rental support will be provided for each unit, with veterans paying about 30 percent of their rent.

Moyer said Volunteers of America expects to start taking tenant applications about 90 days before the first apartments open.

Hope Manor Joliet will have a staff of about 10 employees, providing social services for veterans and their families.

The complex will include apartments with one, two and three bedrooms.

Hope Manor Joliet is the latest development on the old Silver Cross Hospital campus.

The apartment complex will be near the Veterans Affairs Community Based Outpatient Clinic, located in a renovated section of the hospital, and Aunt Martha’s Joliet Community Health Center, which was built from the ground up on the campus.

Hope Manor Joliet is an estimated $15 million construction project. The general contractor is Joseph J. Duffy Co. of Chicago.

LOCAL NEWS Two men escape burning house in Joliet

JOLIET – Two people got out of a house in Joliet while it was on fire Tuesday afternoon.

One man suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center. The fire started about 2 p.m. at 1421 Cleary Ave. “A passer-by knocked on the door to notify the occupants,” Joliet Battalion Chief Jeff Carey said. “When we got there, one guy was out [of the home], and the other was just coming out.”

The first man out of the house had a fire extinguisher and was trying to put out the blaze, which appeared to start outside in the rear of the building, Carey said. The second man out of the home was hospitalized.

Carey said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The fire spread to the kitchen and garage but caused smoke damage throughout the house. Damage was estimated at $40,000. Electricity and gas were shut off, leaving the house uninhabitable.

Joliet teen stabbed, arrested on warrant

JOLIET – Police say a 16-year-old boy was stabbed three times early Tuesday.

Joliet Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said police were called at 12:32 a.m. to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, where the teen was admitted with three stab wounds to his arm.

“His initial statements were very elusive and unclear about what had happened and where,” Roechner said. “After mentioning two other locations, we learned he’d been in a backyard in the 1100 block of Frederick Street and gotten into an argument with a subject who produced a knife and stabbed him.”

The victim did not identify his assailant or, initially, himself, Roechner said.

“After he was released from the hospital, the victim was taken to River Valley Juvenile Detention Center because of an outstanding warrant,” Roechner said.

JOLIET – The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office announced reckless homicide charges Tuesday in connection with an alleged street racing crash in December.

Jeffrey A. Bledsoe, 20, of the 25000 block of Pastoral Drive in Plainfield, was charged with nine counts of reckless homicide, according to a news release from State’s Attorney James Glasgow’s office.

Charles Siebel, 49, of Aurora, died in the Dec. 4 crash that occurred in a section of Aurora that is in Will County. His 15-year-old daughter was injured.

Bledsoe also was charged with two counts of aggravated street racing, one count of aggravated speeding and one count of reckless driving.

Bledsoe initially had been charged with a series of traffic violations. The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office was awaiting the completion of the police investigation, which included crash reconstruction, before upgrading the charges to felonies.

The charges were filed Tuesday

morning when Bledsoe appeared in court on the traffic violations. He is scheduled to appear in court on the felony charges March 23.

Each count of reckless homicide alleges specific acts – including street racing, speeding and failing to drive in a single lane – that caused another vehicle to crash into Siebel’s Toyota Highlander.

Bledsoe was driving a Pontiac Grand Prix. The charges filed Tuesday allege that his actions caused another vehicle, a Dodge Charger, to strike the Highlander driven by Siebel.

The driver of the Charger, a 16-yearold boy, was previously charged with one count of reckless homicide and two counts of aggravated street racing in Will County Juvenile Court. He is next scheduled to appear in court April 22.

Reckless homicide is a Class 3 felony that carries a penalty of two to five years in prison upon conviction.

Aggravated street racing is a Class 4 felony that carries a penalty of one to 12 years in prison. Aggravated speeding and reckless driving are Class A misdemeanors.

• Lukasz G. Kosciubinski, 28, of the 20900 block of West Barrington Street in Plainfield, was arrested by Romeoville police Thursday on charges of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a suspended license and driving without insurance.

• Aleksey M. Skorev, 33, of Northport, Florida, was arrested by the Will County Cooperative Police Assistance Team on Thursday on a charge of auto theft.

• Spelman Stewart, 54, of the 400 block of Nobes Avenue in Joliet, was arrested by Joliet police Thursday on a charge of drug possession.

• Jennifer M. Whittiemore, 37, of the 200 block of Opdyke Avenue in Mount Vernon, was arrested by Romeoville police Thursday for allegedly failing to comply with the state’s sex offender registry requirements.

• Derronta D. Barefield, 21, of the 800 block of Robin Lane in Joliet, was arrested by Joliet police Friday on a charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

• Willie E. Bridges, 39, of the 500 block of East Bellarmine Drive in Joliet, was arrested

by Joliet police Friday on a charge of domestic battery.

• Loren C. Clayton, 46, of the 200 block of Reichman Street in Joliet, was arrested by New Lenox police Friday on charges of drug trafficking and unlawful use of a weapon.

• Jose D. Juarez, 59, of the 6200 block of Artesian Avenue in Chicago, was arrested

by Romeoville police Friday on a charge of shoplifting.

• Judy A. Minton, 63, of the 1900 block of Wilcox Street in Crest Hill, was arrested by Joliet police Friday on a charge of shoplifting.

Raymond “Ray” Baxter, age 69 years, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 6, 2016, with his loving wife by his side. Born in Joliet on Sept. 6, 1946, to Earl and Elizabeth (nee Furdek) Baxter. He was a lifelong resident.

Survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Rita (nee Plyer) Baxter; two loving sons, Michael Baxter and Matthew (Jennifer Alessio) Baxter; three cherished granddaughters, known as his angels, Emma, Anna and Olivia; his sister, Carol Kluska; his sister-inlaw, Rose (Tim) Kerr; his brothers-in-law, Brian (Daniele), Keith (Kathy) and Mark (Tia) Plyer (whom he loved liked sons); nieces and nephews, Chris and Kevin Kluska, Julie Hoover, Brian, Lucia, Kristin and Kelly Plyer; also survived by many lifelong friends and his favorite granddog, Riley.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Earl; his in-laws, Frank and Ida Plyer; and many aunts and uncles.

He was a 1964 graduate of Joliet Catholic High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Vietnam era. He retired from the Romeoville/Lockport Post Office with 30 years of service and from Will County with 10 years of service.

Ray loved the outdoors (fishing in Phillips, WI) and sports, especially his three favorite teams, the Chicago Cubs, the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Blackhawks. His favorite days of the week were Sundays and Tuesdays when he enjoyed playing golf followed by the “19th” hole when he and his friends discussed what went wrong with their game. Ray loved “life” and enjoyed it to the fullest. He loved spending time with his family and his Friday night “date nights” with his wife. He was a very active member of the Northwest Recreational Club (president) and a member of the Moran AC. Visitation will be held at the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home, 2320 Black Road, Joliet on Thursday, March 10, 2016, from 3 to 7 p.m. Please wear your favorite sports attire in honor of Ray’s love of sports. OLE PETTER BIRKELUND Born: Oct. 16, 1950 Died: Dec. 30, 2015

Ole Petter Birkelund peacefully surrendered to his battle with pulmonary adenocarcinoma and radiation pneumonitis on Dec. 30, 2015, the world lost an adventurer, a dreamer, and a humorist.

Ole Petter was born in Tromsø, Norway, on Oct. 16, 1950. Ole Petter lived in Norway until 2003, when he moved to Plainfield, IL, to be with his wife, Mary Lynn Goodson Birkelund.

They recently moved to Raleigh, NC. Ole Petter was preceded in death by his parents, Oddmar and Petra (nee Reisin) Birkelund; a loving sister, Kristin Birkelund, all from Norway; and a dear brother-in-law, Bruce Goodson, of Plainfield.

Ole is survived by his loving wife, Mary Lynn (nee Goodson); two brothers, Odd Erik Birkelund and Kjell Gunnar (Anne Sørli) Birkelund; one sister, Ingrid Alise (Agnar) Birkelund Gryt; as well as five children, IngerLise (Roy Øvergård) Skogli, Kristi (OleEinar Johnsen) Isaksen Birkelund, Ole Ivar (Kristina) Isaksen Birkelund, Kjellaug Eilertsen, Stian Johnstad; 10 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. He is also survived by many loving aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as, two stepdaughters, Jessica (Jeffrey) Lever and Elizabeth (Steven) McEwen; and three stepgrandchildren.

Ole’s extended family also consists of 10 brothers- and sisters-in-law, Deborah (Brian) Kocsis, Diane (Stephen) Fink, Mark (Karen) Goodson, Robert (Connie) Goodson, Barbara (Paul) Ott, James (Susan) Goodson, Jacqueline (Ralph) Pratt, David (Leslie) Goodson, Douglas Goodson; and many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Ole Petter loved life and searched out challenges of all kinds. He was a brilliant card player, especially in bridge. When he believed in something, he was very passionate about it from rock ’n’ roll music to blues music to NASCAR. He loved and missed his homeland, Norway, with all its beauty and Northern Lights and was an avid member of the Sons of Norway. Facebook gave him a tool to continue his friendships and share his vast knowledge.

He was also a member of Normennen choir and Torske Klub which enriched his life with many dear friends. Ole traveled the world, loved retelling of his many adventures, and always dreamed of new adventures to be had.

Ole Petter believed that a good sense of humor was the key to enjoying life. “Laughter is the best medicine,” he would say, “It may not cure you, but it sure makes it more tolerable!”

A Celebration of Life will be held this summer in Northern Norway. All relatives and friends are encouraged to leave messages and memories shared.

By Maraline Mattke and Jackie Bersano With 40 years as a Social Worker, Maraline uses her experience to benefit patients and families of Joliet Area Community Hospice (JACH). Maraline works closely with an interdisciplinary team that includes a doctor, nurse practitioner, nurse, C.N.A., chaplain, volunteers and complementary therapists to provide quality care for our hospice and palliative care patients.

JACH social workers contact each patient and family on admission. An assessment is done of their unique psychosocial needs and a plan of care is prepared in collaboration with the hospice team. The social worker evaluates patients and families to provide support, address end of life decisions and assist with rituals and closure to help with the grief process.

Social workers can also meet with children and provide families information on helping their children. They are encouraged to include rather than exclude them, educate and prepare children at their level of understanding, help with their questions, fears and expression of feelings, and give

children choices about participation.

Social workers utilize resources in the community and provide referrals to agencies that provide complementary services to those provided by the JACH hospice team. And social workers help make wishes come true!

In one instance an adult patient surrounded by friends and family in our Hospice Home in her last days of life was given a graduation ceremony and degree from Joliet Junior College. Another degree was bestowed on a pediatric patient in her backyard by the Dean of Illinois State University.

LOCAL BRIEF Man charged with arson for 2014 Crest Hill townhouse fire CREST HILL – A man has been charged with arson after police say he set his townhouse ablaze in December 2014.

A warrant was issued Friday charging Peter Parrish, 46, with aggravated arson and arson for the Dec. 12, 2014, blaze in the 2300 block of Aster Drive in Crest Hill.

Crest Hill Deputy Police Chief Ed Clark said investigators believe Parrish lit some clothes under a bed on fire and remained inside as the fire spread.

Parrish eventually came out and was hospitalized.

“There were residents in other attached units at the time,” Clark said. “It took some time to process evidence and review the charges in this case.”

According to police records, Parrish is now a Geneva resident and was not in custody as of Tuesday afternoon.

A tax increase alone won’t solve the problem, Munger said. Illinois will face as much as $12 billion in debt by the end of the current fiscal year. Doubling the state’s income tax rate from 3.75 percent to 7.5 percent would cover only the backlog, she said.

Munger called on lawmakers to enact many of Rauner’s “Turnaround Agenda” reforms, including workers’ compensation reform, to do away with burdensome unfunded mandates and to provide property tax relief for homeowners.

She made no mention of the Rauner-backed collective bargaining changes that have driven a wedge between the Republican governor and a Democrat-controlled General Assembly.

When asked afterward why she left that point out of her speech, Munger said she thinks it is best to “focus on what we can agree on.”

“You hear all the time that [these reforms] are anti-middle-class, this is anti-union. Workers’ comp should help unions,” Munger said. “There’s also unfunded mandates. I think they could get in a room together and say, ‘OK, we’re not going to talk about collective bargaining, but we will talk about these things.’”

Rauner: ‘Outrageous’ House is off until April

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner admonished Democratic Speaker Michael Madigan on Tuesday over the House calendar, calling it “outrageous” that legislators in the chamber aren’t due to return until April 4 despite an Illinois budget stalemate now in its ninth month.

Rauner’s tongue-lashing of Madigan is the second in as many weeks as both state leaders continue an epic standoff over a budget that should’ve taken effect July 1 and neither man is budging. Rauner wants pro-business, union-weakening legislation he argues will attract more business to the state, while Madigan has described the governor’s Michael proposals as extreme at- Madigan tacks on the middle class.

Rauner on Tuesday repeatedly characterized the House’s leave from the statehouse as a vacation.

“It’s wrong, they should get back here and do their jobs,” he told reporters in his office at the Capitol.

Madigan spokesman Steve Brown said the schedule was posted long ago and that Rauner had mischaracterized it as a vacation. He also criticized Rauner for spending Monday campaigning for Illinois Republican U.S. Rep. John Shimkus.

“Apparently he woke up, I guess this morning, because yesterday he was out campaigning, woke up this morning and looked at the legislative schedule that’s been published for three or four months

and decided to come out and make a lot of baseless comments,” Brown said.

While the House is off, the Senate is in session for three days this week.

Rauner said the House not being in session highlights a “stunning failure on the part of Speaker Madigan and his caucus in the House.”

The back-and-forth sniping underscores how the acrimony between Rauner and Madigan has only grown in the weeks before high-stakes legislative primaries on March 15. Madigan is among the legislators facing a challenge.

Last week, Rauner accused Madigan of playing political games instead of working with Republicans to pass legislation to fund higher-education institutions and social service programs that have suffered during the budget impasse.

Those comments came before Madigan and his House colleagues passed two pieces of legislation that together would earmark $3.7 billion for colleges, tuition assistance for low-income students and fund various human service programs.

Democrats labeled their idea a compromise – to the annoyance of Republicans who said they weren’t consulted – because it includes forgiving the repayment of $454 million in special state funds. Democrats point out the governor is on board with that to help fund colleges.

But the governor’s office said the two bills Democrats passed are linked and will put Illinois further in debt because the state is currently spending at a deficit without a budget. It’s unclear when the Senate will take up the legislation, but Rauner already has indicated he intends to veto the plan.

Man charged in 9-year-old boy’s shooting death

CHICAGO – A Chicago man initially planned to cut the fingers and ears off the 9-year-old son of a member of a rival gang but ended up luring the boy into an alley with the promise of a juice box and shooting him dead, authorities said Tuesday.

Dwright Boone-Doty, 22, was charged Monday in the Nov. 2 killing of Tyshawn Lee. He has been jailed since a November arrest on Dwright unrelated gun charges.

Boone-Doty Prosecutors also charged him with shooting two people about two weeks earlier, including a 19-yearold woman who died from her wounds.

Authorities said revenge also was the motive in that attack, which the 20-yearold male victim survived.

Tyshawn Lee was one of 400 homicide victims in Chicago last year, but the fourth-grader’s death shocked the city because, according to police, he was killed for no other reason than to punish his father.

Lawmakers seek to expand concealed carry law

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois legislators from both parties are continuing to fine-tune the state’s concealed carry law nearly three years after it was passed.

Legislators have proposed including public transportation, courthouses, interstate highway rest areas, public parks and athletic facilities as areas in which permit holders are allowed to carry a concealed weapon, the State Journal-Register reported.

In July 2013, Illinois became the last state to pass a concealed carry law.

Since then, there have been some changes to the law, but none regarding the areas where concealed carry is allowed.

GOP group: Tweet about Duckworth was a mistake

CHICAGO – The National Republican Senatorial Committee briefly posted a tweet Tuesday that said a Democratic candidate from Illinois who lost both legs

as an Army helicopter pilot “has a sad record of not standing up” for veterans.

NRSC spokeswoman Andrea Bozek acknowledged the tweet about U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth was a mistake that was deleted “within minutes.”

“It would be great if reporters would pay as much attention to a deleted tweet as they should” to other issues in the race, she added in an emailed statement.

The tweet was recirculated on social media and appeared on political blogs.

Duckworth’s campaign noted it as a “disgraceful attack” in an afternoon email soliciting campaign donations.

Bill Clinton campaigns for wife in Chicago suburb

EVANSTON – Former President Bill Clinton is recalling fond memories of meeting his wife over four decades ago and said the now-Democratic presidential front-runner is the “change-maker” the nation needs.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported Clinton spoke to a crowd of hundreds on Tuesday in the Chicago suburb of Evanston. He said he first met Hillary Clinton 45 years ago this month and was “just blown away” by her sense of what was needed to get things done.

He said the country is full of instability and uncertainty, from climate change to racism, and the most important reason to vote for her is that the country can’t wait any longer.

The newspaper reported that earlier Tuesday he stopped at a Chicago soul food cafe with U.S. Rep. Danny Davis.

City firefighters rescue 1 from flea market blaze

CHICAGO – Fire officials fighting a massive blaze at a two-blocklong flea market building in Chicago said they rescued one person as the fire belched large plumes of black smoke into the sky.

The Chicago Fire Department said there were no reports of injuries in the fire that broke out just before 10 a.m.

Tuesday at Buyer’s Flea Market on the West Side. Fire officials said they believe no one else was trapped inside.

About two hours after the fire started, fire officials recalled firefighters from the building. Fire officials said there were many vehicles and flammable items inside the building.

Fire officials said vehicles parked on the building’s deck fell into the building as the roof collapsed.

Clinton, Sanders face close race in Michigan

LANSING, Mich. – Republican front-runner Donald Trump swept to victory in the Mississippi and Michigan presidential primaries Tuesday, deepening his grip on the GOP nominating contest despite fierce efforts to block his path. Democrat Hillary Clinton easily carried Mississippi but was locked in a close race with rival Bernie Sanders in Michigan.

The primaries offered Trump and Clinton a chance to pad their leads and start turning toward the general election. But Sanders was hoping to prevent a Clinton coronation with a strong showing in Michigan, the night’s biggest prize and the first Midwestern industrial state to vote in the 2016 race.

With the votes in Michigan still being counted, Sanders said the close contest signaled that his campaign “is strong in every part of the country, and frankly we believe our strongest areas are yet to happen.”

Clinton glossed over her race with Sanders and instead jabbed at the Republicans and their chaotic nomination fight.

“Every time you think it can’t get any uglier, they find a way,” she said. “As the rhetoric keeps sinking lower, the stakes in this election keep rising.”

Trump, too, turned an eye toward the Democrats and November, emphasizing the importance of helping Republican senators and House members get elected in the fall. Having

entered Tuesday’s contests facing a barrage of criticism from rival candidates and outside groups, he reveled in overcoming the attacks.

“Every single person who has attacked me has gone down,” Trump said at one of his Florida resorts. In his typically unorthodox style, the billionaire was flanked by tables packed with his retail products, including steaks, bottled water and wine.

While a handful of recent losses to Texas Sen. Ted Cruz have raised questions about Trump’s durability, Tuesday’s contests marked another lost opportunity for rivals to slow his momentum. Next week’s winner-take-all primaries in Ohio and Florida loom especially large as perhaps the last chance to stop him short of a longshot contested convention fight.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich was in a fight for second place in Michigan and hoping for a boost heading into next week’s crucial contest in his home state.

For Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, a favorite of Republican elected officials, Tuesday marked the latest in a series of disappointing nights. He emerged from Michigan and Mississippi with no delegates.

Rubio insisted he would press on to his home state’s primary in Florida.

“It has to happen here, and it has to happen now,” Rubio told supporters Tuesday during a rally in Sarasota.

If Rubio and Kasich can’t win at home, the GOP primary appears set to become a two-person race between Trump and Cruz.

To the Editor: Some folks are worried that Bernie Sanders’ plans are going to destroy the country. Right now, we’re $20 trillion in debt, we have millions of people who are out of work, our infrastructure is collapsing, average student debt is around $50,000, and youth unemployment is hovering around 30 percent (even higher if you’re a person of color).

We still are recovering from the worst economic collapse since the Great Depression, a collapse that saw millions of peoples’ homes be foreclosed on by the banks, and the annual budget deficit skyrocket to $1.3 trillion a year under the Bush administration. We waged two extraordinarily costly wars, and destroyed millions of lives both at home and in the Middle East, destabilizing the entire region, and giving rise to ISIS. I am not sure which boogeyman scenario you can come up with that makes me believe that it is somehow going to get worse under Bernie Sanders. He is the only person running who was trying to warn us about these things for the past 30 years.

– Winston Churchill SPRINGFIELD – Illinois politicians like to extol the virtues of democracy but avoid practicing it as much as possible.

Look no further than the Illinois General Assembly, a fiefdom of political insiders determined to protect their political behinds. They do this by curbing political competition in any way possible.

President Barack Obama stood before his former colleagues last month and talked about politicians choosing their voters rather than voters choosing their politicians.

He was talking about you, Mike Madigan.

House Speaker Madigan is the master of the dark art of drawing legislative districts.

After each U.S. Census, he carves up the Land of Lincoln like a Thanksgiving turkey.

It has resulted in Illinois having one of the lowest levels of competition for legislative seats in the nation.

At my request, Ballotpedia analyzed 2016 Illinois election filing data and

REEDER REPORT Scott Reeder found that in 67 percent of Illinois legislative districts, the candidate – usually an incumbent – will run unopposed in November.

Yeah, you read that right. More than two-thirds of the time, voters have only one legislative candidate to “choose” from.

And that understates the extent of the problem. In the remaining onethird of districts, the opposition is usually nominal.

Why don’t candidates run?

Because they know that a person of their political party can’t win in the district where they live.

Political insiders such as Madigan have drawn almost every Illinois legislative district with this in mind.

A movement is afoot to amend the Illinois Constitution to have an independent commission, rather than political party bosses, draw legislative boundaries.

Not surprisingly, Party Boss Madigan is doing everything he can to

thwart these efforts.

In 2014, Illinois ranked in the bottom 10 for political competitiveness, Tyler King, an analyst for Ballotpedia, said.

And much of that reason is that every decade, legislative leaders stack the cards to favor their political party.

It’s a shameless display of contempt for voters.

In November, Illinois voters might have an opportunity to show their contempt for this political process that disenfranchises most Illinoisans from choosing their lawmakers. They are being asked to vote on creating an independent commission to draw legislative boundaries.

Even now, word is that Madigan or one of his allies may go to court to block voters from considering such a measure.

It would be just one more example of those in political power showing contempt for the voters.

USF scores wild baseball victory in Fla. SUBMITTED REPORTS LAKELAND, Fla. – The University of St. Francis baseball team continued its winning ways Tuesday with a 13-12 victory over Southeastern University.

The Saints (10-5) built a 8-3 lead before Southeastern fought back to take a 9-8 lead going to the seventh. The Saints scored one in the seventh, three in the eighth and one in the ninth to go up 13-9 and collected 18 hits on the day.

We were hoping to execute a little bit better, but unfortunately, we weren’t able to make shots, and they were.

“It’s an old saying that it’s really tough to beat a good team three times.

We had everything to lose and they had everything to gain. Credit goes to their guys since they played hard and tough. I thought we’d be able to wear them down, but they continued to make shots. This is a special group of guys, so I’m glad that they were able to get a lot done. But we wanted and expected a lot more. My heart goes out to our 15 guys, because they gave me everything.”

Oswego got buckets from four different players during its key third-quarter run. In the third quarter, the Panthers made good on 8-of-13 shots while the Indians were 3-of-10 from the field. Oswego owned a decisive 9-2 rebounding edge during that period to help it to a 28-18 advantage for the contest. The Panthers finished 20-of-34 (59 percent)

from the floor, while Minooka wound up shooting 16-of-45 (36 percent) for the game.

Nick Clemmons (11 points) hit a 3-pointer early in the final quarter to pull the Indians to within 38-29. But then they went 3:50 without scoring.

WOMEN’S TRACK

Lewis’ Cook cited: The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association has named Amber Cook the Midwest Region Field Athlete of the Year. Cook will compete in the high, long and triple jumps at the NCAA Indoor Championships this weekend.

She won all three of those events at the GLVC Indoor Track and Field Championships on her way to GLVC Field Athlete of the Year honors. That helped propel the Flyers to their third straight conference title. two free throws with 3:56 left, Minooka trailed 44-31. The Indians only collected seven field goals in the final half, but three of those came during the final 1:26.

“The first time we played we got them pretty good,” Clemmons said.

“And the second time, they just got Malique and Jaylen back and we thought it was going to be a pretty good game, and it was. This time around, Malique was as healthy as he could be and Jaylen was, too. All of their players played their hearts out and they just got us. I’ve been playing with these guys for four years and they’re my brothers. We’re one big family.”

The opening half was pretty even with Oswego owning a pair of early five-point leads while Minooka had two late three-point advantages. Clemmons scored eight of his 11 points in the first half while Joe Butler collected six of his eight points in before the break. Jon Butler also tossed in 11 points for the Indians.

“We definitely should be proud of this season,” Joe Butler said. “I’m really proud of this group of guys and coach. We won our first regional title in almost 40 years, and we won our first conference championship in the SPC. This was a great senior season, and I couldn’t have asked for anything more. I loved playing basketball with these guys.”

This is happening a bit too often.

Last week, Joliet Catholic, which finished the season No. 1 in the Herald-News area rankings, played its worst game of the season and lost decisively to Providence in the Class 3A Lincoln-Way West Regional semifinals.

Minooka (23-9), No. 2 in the area rankings, was in good shape for a half in Tuesday night’s 4A Lockport Sectional semifinal. But the Indians suffered through what might have been their worst half in the final two quarters as Oswego ran away with a 55-38 victory.

Take nothing away from Providence or Oswego (19-9), because they were the better teams on the nights they needed to be. But it really hurts to see two of our best teams go out in the manner that it happened.

After Minooka led, 20-19, at half, the Indians could do nothing right in the second half. They missed their shots, and Oswego guards Malique Ross and Jaylen Jones caught fire. When the Panthers did miss, they were strong on the offensive boards. When Minooka did get a rebound on an Oswego free-throw miss, the Indians were whistled for pushing off.

It was that kind of a second half.

“Things didn’t go our way,” Minooka senior Joe Butler said. “They (Panthers) played with a lot of heart and composure. They outplayed us. They were a different team than the last two times we played them (two Minooka victories en route to the Southwest Prairie Conference championship).”

“We went out all fired up to start and we were hitting our shots,” Indians senior Nick Clemmons said. “In the second half, our shots weren’t falling and they started hitting everything. Then in the fourth quarter it was too late.”

The adage that it is hard to beat a good team three times reared its ugly head.

“It is tough to beat a good team three times,” Minooka coach Scott Tanaka said. “We had everything to lose and they had everything to gain.

“We wanted something more, and we expected a lot more. That’s a special group of guys in our locker room. They gave it all they had. Nobody gave them the benefit of the doubt from Day 1.”

Lose and go home. That’s the way it is in postseason basketball.

You may not feel that way if you watched what transpired in the second half Tuesday, but the Indians were a better team all season than they showed in the final 16 minutes.

This time, Oswego had its team healthy, which made the Panthers extra dangerous. Then when they hit nearly 59 percent of their shots, well, they’re going to beat a whole lot of people.

“They did a great job defensively and made their shots, contested shots,” Tanaka said. “And unfortunately, we weren’t able to make our shots.”

When one team gets hot and the other misses shots it is accustomed to getting, you get a 55-38 final.

That should not be the lasting memory of Minooka’s season, however.

How about the first SPC title, the first regional title since 1977 and a group that will live in infamy for what it did for Minooka basketball.

WEDNESDAY’S GAMES

Two sectional semifinals of interest to local fans are on tap Wednesday night as Joliet Central and Joliet West square off at Lockport and Peotone challenges Lincoln-Way West in the Class 3A meet at Streator.

West (19-9), the No. 3 sectional seed, has beaten No. 7 Joliet Central (16-12) twice, most recently 72-63 in the final game of the regular season.

If the Steelmen are going to make the third time a charm, they must get the usual strong games from Mailk Fuller and Jose Grubbs, and sophomore guard Cameron Blackmon and Grubbs must stand up to the Tigers’ ball pressure.

West features Trevian Bell, one of the best all-around talents in the area, and an excellent guard in Teyvion Kirk. Both are juniors but have been involved in so many big situations in their varsity careers that their youth is not an issue.

Everything else being equal, the Tigers appear to have the upper hand.

However, the Steelmen played well in the regional, knocked off red-hot Plainfield East and No. 2 sectional seed Lincoln-Way Central in the regional and are prepared to give West a good run.

I’ll take the Tigers, but with the thought it won’t be easy. Good news, though, for Steelmen fans. I picked Minooka to win the sectional in Tuesday’s column. As Lockport coach Brett Hespell teased after Oswego’s victory over the Indians on Tuesday night, “OK, so who are you going to pick wrong tomorrow?”

At Streator, meanwhile, Peotone’s Kale Maupin and Lincoln-Way West’s Marco Pettinato both have enjoyed excellent seasons. The Warriors, though, play stronger competition and will use that to their advantage as they advance to the sectional final.

CCAC grind helps USF entering nationals

That may be an asset for the University of St. Francis and five other Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball teams as they begin their quest for the NAIA Division II national championship.

St. Francis (28-4), the CCAC regular-season champion, has drawn one of the four No. 2 seeds in the 32-team national tournament at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

CCAC Tournament winner Olivet Nazarene and Saint Xavier are No. 1 seeds in their eight-team brackets.

The league’s other qualifiers are Cardinal Stritch, St. Ambrose and Purdue-Calumet. St. Ambrose beat USF, 79-69, in the semifinals of the CCAC Tournament, snapping the Saints’ 12game winning streak.

“It’s great for our conference to have six teams and some high seeds,” USF coach Samantha Quigley said. “I think the whole conference is in good position to make some noise.”

Quigley, the CCAC Coach of the Year, said the Saints have faced “11 of 12 teams that were ranked.” Many, of course, were within the confines of the CCAC, but St. Francis also has played a good nonconference schedule. All of that hat has resulted in a battled-tested group that feels it has a chance to challenge for the big prize in the program’s first visit to a national tournament since 1996.

Those positive vibes result in part from having a coach who has played on the big stage herself. Quigley was an honorable-mention All-American as the point guard for coach Doug Bruno at DePaul as the Blue Demons reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

Quigley’s Saints (28-4) will open in the national tournament beginning with a game against Asbury (23-9) at 10:15 a.m. Thursday.

“A 32-team tournament is a great thing because it’s so competitive,” Quigley said. “You don’t have 16 seeds (in each of four regionals) like NCAA Division I has. So you don’t tend to have early blowouts.”

Quigley is assisted by a veteran staff that includes Dan McCarthy, Mike Delrose, Cosima Tines and Jeremy Kreiger. Her experience, though, can be a key on the eve of the tournament.

“I have imparted some things to the team that I remember as a player in a national tournament,” she said.

“Things about how the floor may be different, recognizing beforehand where the dead spots are. The shooting backdrop may be different. There are things that won’t be normal to us, so you try prepare as best you can.

“We probably won’t have as long of a pregame as we are used to, so we have to take advantage of the time we have.”

Multiple factors have played into the Saints’ excellent season, not the least of which is the addition of trans-

fers Charnelle Reed from Bradley and Jordan Giddings from Sauk Valley.

Reed is the team’s scoring and rebounding leader.

“Charnelle has experience at the Division I level, which helps, and just her competitiveness has helped, too,” Quigley said.

“We are getting good senior leadership and we have those couple of transfers who had college basketball experience. We have a great mesh of freshmen to seniors who are very experienced, and that helps a lot.”

Defense has been a calling card for the Saints.

“We are very defense-minded as a staff,” Quigley said. “Sometimes on the offensive end the shot does not roll your way, but you always can play defense. We have done a great job late in the season rebounding and playing defense. We put a big emphasis on defending people.”

Quigley said the Saints are staying in South Dakota, but only about three miles from the Tyson Events Center.

The proximity may come in handy with the 10:15 a.m. opener Thursday.

“It’s a little different playing at 10:15 a.m., but our girls get up early anyway for shootarounds, so it shouldn’t be a big deal,” Quigley said.

“It’s really exciting whenever we play. We’re excited to be playing ball in a different environment. It’s been awhile since our program has been there. Our women are seeing the results from all their hard work. I told them after we won the conference that we aren’t finished. There is a bigger celebration waiting.”

In the offseason, Quigley will be busy for a while with the USA Basketball Women’s U17 World Championship team. She was named an assistant coach for the tournament that will be played June 22 to July 2 in Zaragoza, Spain. She also was an assistant for the USA’s bronze-medal finish at the 2015 FIBA Americas U16 Championship.

“To return as a USA Basketball assistant coach means the world to me,” Quigley said. “I was able to learn so much from the assistant coaching position last season. To be honest, we are all very hungry to pick up where we left off. I am looking forward to building on some of the successes we had last summer and pushing the players to compete every day we are together.”

First things first, however. There is that business of guiding the Saints through the national tournament. She has them ready.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS GLENDALE, Ariz. – Austin Jackson’s signing added depth to the White Sox’s outfield. Avisail Garcia made a strong pitch not to be the odd man out Tuesday.

Garcia had three hits, including his first spring home run, and Adam Eaton also went 3 for 4 as the Sox pounded the Milwaukee Brewers, 10-6.

Adding Jackson, a free agent, figures to have the most impact on Garcia and Eaton. Jackson mostly has played center field – where Eaton normally is for the Sox – while right fielder Garcia is coming off a disappointing 2015 season.

“Where they put me, this is my job, I love what I do,” Garcia said. “I can’t control it. I can prepare myself to make the adjustment that I need.”

Jimmy Rollins also homered

and had three hits in Sox’s onslaught that knocked out Brewers starter Chase Anderson after 1 2/3 innings.

Anderson, acquired in the offseason from Arizona, gave up seven hits and seven runs. He was relieved by David Goforth, who gave up a single to Melky Cabrera followed by Garcia’s homer. The latter reached the concourse over the left-field bullpen at Camelback Ranch. The Sox finished with 16 hits in the game.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS Injured forward Marcus Kruger has agreed to a $9.25 million, three-year contract extension with the Blackhawks that runs through the 2018-19 season.

The 25-year-old Kruger had left wrist surgery in December, but is expected to return before

the start of the playoffs. He will make $3,475,000 in each of the next two years, and $2.3 million in the final season.

Kruger, a fifth-round pick in the 2009 draft, signed a one-year deal before this season.

Kruger, who made his NHL debut in 2011, has developed into a versatile performer who helps

kill penalties and often draws difficult defensive assignments.

He had seven goals and 10 assists in 81 games last season, and then helped the Hawks win the Stanley Cup for the third time in the past six seasons.

Kruger has 28 goals and 57 assists in 320 career games, all with the Hawks.

6-ingredient Slow Cooker Pulled Pork

Dinner’s easy with pulled pork

Once upon a time (like, yesterday) I had a hefty hunk of pork, no time and no specific thing I wanted to make. But even with so little going for me, and so little inspiration, I did know one thing: A container of homemade shredded pork in the refrigerator means there will be dinner later in the week and that my future frazzled self will look back on my current frazzled self and be grateful.

So I seared the pork, tossed in some garlic and chicken broth, and tossed the whole thing into the slow cooker for a while. For very little hands-on effort, I was richly rewarded. A delicious, tender, falling-apart pork bathed in an equally delicious sauce. And it took just six ingredients – a number that includes the salt and pepper.

If you want a bit more flavor, you can throw in some branches of fresh oregano or other herbs when you add the chicken broth. A diced onion or can of diced tomatoes would be delightful, too. But they are hardly essential.

Now, what to do with this pork? Pile it high on buns for a pulled pork sandwich (and if you need more flavor, a squirt of any kind of barbecue sauce

– Texas-style, Memphis-style, North-Carolina style, your choice – will tie it all together). Or go Asian by mixing in a bit of hoisin sauce and serve in lettuce wraps with some fresh ginger, mint and shredded carrot. It also would be great added to a stir-fry. Or do the taco or enchilada thing, or add it to a lasagna or some manicotti.

The options last as long as the pork does.

6-ingredient Slow Cooker Pulled Pork Start to finish: 6½ hours (30 minutes active) Servings: 10

1 tablespoon olive oil 5- to 6-pound bone-in pork picnic shoulder, skin removed 1½ teaspoons kosher salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 10 garlic cloves, skin on 3 to 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth or stock, plus more for drizzling In a large skillet over high, heat the oil. Season the pork with the salt and pepper, then add the pork to the skillet and

sear on all sides until very well browned, with a nice outer crust, about 15 minutes in all. After 10 minutes, add the garlic cloves, turning them every once in a while so that they brown on all sides as well.

Transfer the pork, fatty side up, to a 7- to 8-quart slow cooker. Return the skillet to high heat. Add 1 cup of broth and bring to a simmer, scraping the bottom of the pan to release any stuck bits. When the skillet bottom looks clean, pour the liquid over the pork, then add another 2 cups of broth to the slow cooker.

Cook for 5½ to 6 hours on high or 9 to 10 hours on low, or until the pork starts to fall apart when prodded with a fork. It should reach at least 170 degrees F. Let the pork rest for 20 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to scoop out the garlic cloves, then squeeze them out of the papers into the liquid. Transfer the pork to a large bowl or large cutting board, then use 2 forks to pull apart the meat intro shreds. Moisten the meat with the juices in the slow cooker (use as much or as little as you like). Mix well to moisten and flavor the meat with the juices.

Nutrition information per serving: 260 calories; 90 calories from fat (35 percent of total calories); 10 g fat (3 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 110 mg cholesterol; 420 mg sodium; 2 g carbohydrate; 0 g fiber; 0 g sugar; 38 g protein.

So when might it be reasonable to ask your doctor to prescribe antibiotics for a sinus infection because it might be caused by bacteria? Here are some rules of the road: • When the symptoms are prolonged. For example, if after 10 days your infection is not getting better, it’s reasonable to call your doctor and ask about an antibiotic.

• When the symptoms are severe. Alarm signs of a bacterial sinus infection are sharp pain in the cheeks or teeth accompanied by a fever.

• When the symptoms are getting worse. If you have cold-like symptoms that progress to severe pain and fever, antibiotics might be worth considering.

Finally, even if your doctor does eventually prescribe an antibiotic, don’t expect too much. In clinical trials that compared antibiotics to a placebo pill for confirmed bacterial sinusitis, the antibiotic had minimal effect.

Why is that? Most likely it’s because the sinuses are blocked. A bacterial sinus infection needs to drain. It’s like a boil on your skin, if you’ve ever had one. Antibiotics help only a little – until the boil is lanced and the pus inside drains away.

Also, the antibiotic in the bloodstream can’t reach the bacteria inside the sinus, just the bacteria in the lining of the sinus (which is where the blood is flowing).

Dear Reader: Most cases of sinusitis are caused by viral infections. Viruses are bulletproof to antibiotics. All antibiotics can do in this case is cause side effects.

So, the best course of action for occasional sinusitis is to use self-care steps to ease symptoms while the body clears the infection.

Your sinuses are hollow spaces in your facial bones. In response to infection, the sensitive lining of the sinuses swells up and starts to pour out mucus, triggering nasal stuffiness, a runny nose and facial pain. You also might experience fatigue, cough, impaired sense of smell, fullness or pressure in the ears or headache.

While your body fights the infection, these self-care steps can help to ease symptoms: • Spray in some saline. Saline (saltwater) rinses are very soothing. Frequent, gentle snorts of a prepackaged saline spray can help to loosen mucus.

• Use decongestants. Over-the-counter decongestant pills or nasal sprays can be used on a limited basis to reduce stuffiness.

– Nasal spray decongestants: Limit yourself to no more than two doses a nostril a day for no longer than five days. If you use a nasal decongestant for too long, you can get the opposite effect from what you seek: Your nose may start running when you stop using the decongestant.

– Decongestant pills: A common side effect of these pills is moderate jitteriness.

You shouldn’t take such pills if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure or a heart condition.

• Take a pain reliever to ease headache or facial pain. When experiencing inflammation, you may get more benefit from a

He wins with dummy’s heart ace, unblocks the spade queen, plays a trump to his hand, ruffs a spade in the dummy, draws the remaining trumps, and runs the spades. He loses only two diamond tricks.

Finally, what would it mean if North had bid three clubs, not two no-trump? In the old days, that would have been natural, showing l-o-n-g clubs. But now, most experts treat that bid as weak, asking partner to pass with clubs or rebid three diamonds. Then, the two-no-trump inquiry promises some game interest.
