Mall Lumber – Mokena Since the mid-19 century, Chicago has served as a major wholesaling center. Like many other cities in America, Chicago has been a place for the exchange and distribution of commodities where wholesalers, often acting as merchants, specialize in connecting the producers of the products or commodities with the retailers who sell them to the customers.

Over that past 140 years, Chicago wholesalers have become some of the leading distributors and marketers of goods, grain, dry goods, hardware and lumber, among other products.

The wholesale trade in Chicago grew rapidly after the Illinois and Michigan Canal opened in 1848, and this growth was further bolstered by the completion of railroad construction during the 1850s. By the 1880s, Chicago had become one of the most important centers in North America for the distribution and marketing of lumber and grain in particular.

Chicago lumber merchants, such as Charles Mears, built large fortunes during the 19th century by acting as wholesalers of forest products from Michigan and Wisconsin, and helping to sort and grade lumber that ran through their sawmills.

To tap into the need for local lumber, many new companies began operations in small towns around the Midwest. Located south of the Rock Island Railroad tracks on McGovney Street between Wolf Road and Hacker Street, Mall Lumber Company was an important material supply

For many years, Harry Mall, the son of the company’s founder, managed the lumberyard. Mall Lumber, which also sold a variety of building supplies over the years, continued

to operate until around 1950.

The buildings that housed the old lumberyard were demolished in the early 1970s.

Today, the old site and street of the former lumberyard contains residential homes.

ExxonMobil volunteers team up with Will County Habitat for Humanity “There is a new appreciation for veterans that was not happening in the 1970s.”

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – What started as a little painting and patching turned into a new kitchen for a former Marine by volunteers who want to help veterans.

Harold Baggech in his younger days did this kind of work himself.

“I used to work with heavy machinery,” said Baggech, who likes to talk about his former jobs and the work he did.

But at age 80, even home improvement tasks can be tough for Harold now.

In fact, he and wife, Charlene, were preparing for a trip to Edward Hines Jr. Veterans Administration Hospital when a series of events fell into place that led to a new kitchen at their Bolingbrook home. The project is scheduled for completion Saturday.

Charlene said she was talking with the executive director at the Will County Veterans Assistance Commission about some help for the Hines visit when, “I just happened to bring up the fact that, would there be anyone willing to paint and do some home repair. She said, well, there is this group that is looking to help out veterans.”

That group is the Veterans Support Group from the ExxonMobil Refinery in Channahon Township.

Helping one another

The refinery opened in 1972 with a large number of veterans in its workforce – many from the Vietnam War. They like to help out fellow veterans, said Tim Rice, a former Marine who served in Vietnam.

“There is a new appreciation for veterans that was not happening in the 1970s,” Rice said Saturday while taking a break from the kitchen project at the Baggech home.

He recalled stories of soldiers being spat at and called names when they returned to the United States at a time when anti-Vietnam War feelings ran high. That didn’t happen to Rice. But remembering it motivates him.

Rice is an ExxonMobil retiree who volunteers with the Veterans Support Group.

“It’s helping our family – our brotherhood and sisterhood,” he said. “I’m glad to be able to help.”

First sweat equity project

Not everyone in the Veterans Support Group is a veteran. The group consists of employees, retirees and even contractors who work at the refinery.

The group has done fundraising and donations in previous years. The kitchen project at the Baggech home is its first sweat equity project.

Also helping out on the

kitchen project are some volunteers from the Joliet Area Young Professionals, affiliated with the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Altogether, they’re about 40 strong in Bolingbrook. And, they appear to be doing good work, said Charlene and Harold.

“There was no horsing

around,” Charlene said. “They really know what to do.”

“I was surprised at how many people showed up,” Harold said. “They had so many people, they were stepping on each other.”

Not quite. Being refinery workers, they do have some manual labor know-how.

Finding people who know how to do this kind of work

is no problem, said Art Aldaco, the job’s project manager.

He checked out the Baggech home after getting notice from the Will County Veterans Assistance Commission.

“It was going to be a little painting and some light woodwork,” Aldaco said.

But when he saw the condition of the couple’s kitchen, damaged by a plumbing leak, Aldaco went back to his group and suggested a kitchen remodeling.

A ‘Brush With Kindness’

Getting the appliances and cabinets needed for the job was more than what the ExxonMobil Veterans Support Group could typically handle. But, Aldaco said, the group teamed up with Will County Habitat for Humanity for what that agency calls a “Brush With Kindness” project.

Habitat for Humanity usually builds new houses.

“Brush With Kindness” is a home repair program.

Will County Habitat for Humanity has supplied the cabinets, appliances and flooring needed to build the new kitchen.

Harold, who served during the Korean War era, and Charlene have lived in their Bolingbrook home since 1974.

They like the neighborhood and want to stay.

Charlene, still a bit stunned at what her simple request for a little help painting the walls has grown into, said, “It’s a miracle.”

Colleges satisfied with Rauner’s proposal Proposal calls for no decrease in state funding

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Community college leaders support Gov. Bruce Rauner’s budget proposal, since they say it will support institutions they call the economic drivers for communities.

Over the past five years, state funding for community colleges has decreased annually, from $316 million in 2010 to $283 million this year, said Matt Berry, Illinois Community College Board legislative liaison.

However, Rauner’s budget proposal calls for no reduction in state funding, despite deep cuts directed at other higher education institutions.

Kelly Rohder, Joliet Junior College spokeswoman, said the college’s leaders appreciate Rauner’s support of community colleges. She said the college has prepared several contin-

gency plans if state support is lacking, but officials will have to wait and see what the final budget looks like.

“At this point, it appears there’s support for the mission of community colleges and we certainly appreciate that,” she said.

The Illinois Community College Board fully supports Rauner’s proposal for community college funding, Berry said. He said ICCB officials will have conversations with state legislators in the coming months about Rauner’s proposal.

“We have never been able to recover those funding cuts and we have experienced additional cuts,” he said.

State dollars are crucial for community colleges, since they are one of three basic sources of funding, Berry said. Colleges also rely on student tuition and local property taxes.

All together, the funding is

“At this point, it appears there’s support for the mission of community colleges and we certainly appreciate that.”

Rohder said since 1999, JJC has faced declining state support. In the last three to five years, the college has made significant budget cuts. Those cuts, for example, have reduced travel and professional development opportunities, she said.

“Every year we face difficult choices in our budgeting process as we account for de-

clining state funding,” Rohder said.

Kari Nugent, Kankakee Community College spokeswoman, said it’s exciting community colleges continue to be seen as economic engines for communities.

“The governor’s proposal allows us to be committed and agile and responsive to our local community needs,” she said.

Channahon trims budget at weekend workshop

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – It took only two hours for Channahon staff, trustees and the mayor to save the village almost half a million dollars during a Saturday morning budget workshop.

Imagine, one joked at the end of the meeting, what another couple of hours might do.

The group met to continue its fine-tuning of this year’s expenses. An initial workshop was held during last week’s Village Board meeting, and the weekend discussion was arranged to address what was shaping up to be a $500,000 deficit.

Finance Director Heather Morandi said the revenue the village expects to see this year won’t support proposed expens-

es in the general and capital improvement funds. “Wish lists” composed by department heads were whittled down over the last few weeks, and the board was left with a list of line items staff believe were necessary for optimum village function.

Three items the board slashed from the budget Saturday were a new truck with an attached snow plow and two police squad cars. Existing vehicles are getting higher in mileage, trustees were told, but both the public works director and the police chief said with the large deficit this year, the purchases could be held off for now.

Police Chief Jeff Wold added, however, that by next year, the department may need three or four new squad cars.

Morandi said that unless

revenues “really decline” next year, the village’s budget should not face the deficit it is this year.

Trustees also decided to go with Village President Joe Cook’s suggestion to split the $150,000 cost of an engineering study for a Bridge Street bike path into two fiscal years, if engineers agree, which would shave off another $75,000 this year.

New village gateway signs that were to be posted at Channahon’s entrance points were also cut, as was the purchase of a 2-year-old Gator utility vehicle for the Public Works Department. Director Ed Dolezal had requested the Gator for maintaining the grassy areas along bike paths, applying mosquito larvicide to catch basins, hauling smaller objects around

the public works facilities and other jobs now done by trucks.

The board decided the vehicle was not a priority this year.

In all, the deficit was reduced to $6,000 by the end of the workshop.

Also discussed, but not decided, were some ways to bring new revenue to the village, including increasing the impound fee for vehicles of people arrested while driving.

Channahon charges $300, according to Wold, while neighboring towns charge $500.

Another revenue measure considered was an increase in fees for fingerprinting services the police department offers.

Wold estimated about 500 people a year have their fingerprints taken at the department.

There is no charge for Channahon residents who request

the service and a $15 charge for nonresidents. Other facilities generally charge quite a bit more for fingerprinting services, Wold said.

Trustees were not opposed to raising fees for fingerprinting or impounding and could take up the measures as action items later.

They were not as enthusiastic about another revenue-generating idea – an increase in utility fees to compensate for new village computer software.

Several trustees were against that proposal, including Mark Scaggs, who suggested finding other ways to get rid of the deficit before such fees or taxes were increased.

“Let’s see what else we can eliminate from the wish list before we raise taxes,” Scaggs said.

Families can talk to Rentz to get that information if they don’t already have it.

But the public will have an opportunity to view some of the cardinals, among other artwork, during White Oak’s fine arts night April 23. Shabbona Middle School students’ artwork also will be displayed.

Rentz hopes to put up one to two pieces for each student.

The evening will include a talent show. The festivities run from 6 to 8 p.m.

At a time when great emphasis is placed on mandated standardized testing, it’s good to see the arts still are considered important.

MORRIS – While walking through White Oak Elementary School in Morris last month, covering a different story, I noticed the walls of one hallway were covered with brightly colored paintings of cardinals.

I was so taken with the pictures and how they brightened up the school, I snapped a couple photos.

The paintings made me think of greeting cards that children make and are printed by nonprofit organizations.

Or even unique pictures you might find in a catalog or online.

After I cropped and printed two of them, I knew I had to have them to brighten up my office. But I couldn’t just take someone else’s work without giving credit where credit is due.

I contacted the school and White Oak art teacher Larissa Rentz told me the paintings were all done by first-grade students. The cardinals are one of Rentz’s favorite winter projects. Not only because they are so cheerful, but because the school’s mascot is a cardinal.

Students learn about shapes, colors and layering to reach the desired effects of the birds. They begin by drawing a branch, following along with Rentz’s example.

They add a teardrop shape for the bodies, a u-shape for the face, circles for eyes and a triangle for the beak.

Then they learn about layering colors – the red bodies, black faces, orange beaks and cute little eyes.

The work is all done freehand, which makes each one so unique.

I’m so enamored with these paintings, and Rentz said she is very impressed with how well the first-graders did.

6 Students’ artwork brightens up winter

Billie said she met Bill on a blind date in 1940. When she was modeling in Chicago, Billie said one of her friends suggested she come to Joliet and meet a dentist she knew.

Billie recalled saying, “He’s probably a jerk.”

Then Billie met him.

“He was gorgeous,” Billie said. “The next day I sent my mother a picture postcard of Louis Joliet in the library grass and said, ‘I met Bill and I’m going to marry him.’ ” Billie did, four years later.

She and Bill were married nearly 70 years when he died Jan. 4 at age 98.

She said all four of their children did volunteer work because of Bill’s example.

“Not one priest or nun ever paid a dental bill. He took care of all the bishops, too,” she said.

JOLIET – Jim Limacher of Ottawa said he wasn’t quite 5 when he and his family attended a weekend church fun fair.

After spending all his money Saturday, Jim approached his father, William “Bill” Limacher, for more money.

Bill gave it to Jim – and made him sign an I.O.U. “He wasn’t tight about not spending any money,” said Jim, who worked at the First National Bank of Joliet for 40 years, “but he did teach us fiscal responsibility.”

Bill Limacher of Joliet was moderate in all things, said his daughter Susie Parrett of Champaign – except golf and prayer.

“Every night he was on his knees at the end of his bed saying his prayers,” Susie said.

Bill also said many rosaries and attended daily Mass.

Only Bill’s faith and loved ones came before golf. Bill taught everyone in his family to play the game, from his wife, Billie, all the way down to his great-grandchildren.

Bob Stephen of Joliet, Bill’s second cousin, said Bill possessed “one of the sweetest swings of the game.” Bill golfed twice a week at the Joliet Country Club. Although Bob said he never could compete with Bill, he always learned something new about golf just from being on the course with him.

The same was true even during conversation.

“Bill loved to discuss politics, sports and anything meaningful,” Bob said. “I would classify him as a legend – very smart, a one-way think-

But Billie’s admiration for Bill worked two ways.

Their daughter, Terry Dell of Wheaton, said her father never entered or left a room without kissing Billie. Bill knew – and played – just one song on the banjo (“That’s Where My Money Goes”), but he loved to sing, Terry said, and greeted each day with a song.

“He sang to his patients while he worked on them,” Terry said, “and then patted them on the cheek when he said, ‘Goodbye.’ ” Many people did not know Bill was in pain most of his life due to a slipped disc in his neck, said his son Pat Limacher of Winnetka, pain that practicing dentistry must have exacerbated.

Bill never complained; indeed, Bill was known for his dry sense of humor.

Pat, who has osteoarthritis, recalled one day when he and Bill drove out to a golf course.

Both of them struggled to leave the car and uttered a few “Ooohs” and “Ows!” as they did so.

“Then he looked at me and said, ‘You know, with your genes, you’re going to live a long life,’ ” Pat said, “ ‘and be in pain for most of it.’ And he smiled with that damn dry sense of humor.”

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Forest Preserve District of Will County collected just $2,840 in fees in 2014 for nondistrict special events, while revenue collected at those events by outside organizations, mostly charities, were estimated at $91,000, according to a newly released district report.

The report – distributed to the district’s Operations Committee last week – shows how the growth of nondistrict special events is beginning to eat into district resources as staff deals with a $400,000 budget shortfall this year.

Nearly 30 special events were held last year, with participants ranging anywhere from 50 to 2,000 people. But the permit fee remained a $25 flat rate.

It’s clear the district cannot continue on such an unsustainable path much longer, said Marcy DeMauro, the district’s executive director. That’s why officials are considering a special event fee structure change for 2016.

“These events have not only increased in numbers, but also size,” DeMauro

Policy changes outlined in the report call for a number of restrictions, including allowing just one event per organization per year. There also would be no more than two outside events at any preserve or trail per month.

Events with 300-plus attending would be charged a $40-per-hour policing fee.

A new fee structure – coupled with staff reductions and an early retirement program this year, with anticipated savings of $2.2 million over a five-year period – should ease the organization’s shift from periods of “intense growth” to the maintenance of existing lands, DeMauro said.

As part of that shift, dis-

trict officials are putting together a 2015-19 administrative work plan.

Staff initially suggested last week that the fee double and a $200 administrative fee would be tacked on to offset costs. But after hearing feedback from members of the Operations Committee, DeMauro said staff is considering a sliding scale fee structure based on the event’s size and impact to trails and facilities.

The sliding fee scale is a similar policy adopted by other forest preserve districts in the seven-county region, according to the district report.

DeMauro said any new fees would be approved in October as part of the district’s 2016 fee schedule ordinance.

Report: 1 in 10 state employees tops $100K pay

BELLEVILLE – Belleville and several other Illinois cities are trying to recover money lost in allegedly fraudulent investments linked to a Florida businessman.

The Belleville News-Democrat reported the city of Belleville still has about $347,000 tied up in a restricted account managed by the Illinois Metropolitan Investment Fund. That fund invested in repurchase agreements through a middle company that did business with First Farmers Financial of Orlando, Florida.

Federal authorities arrested First Farmers CEO Nikesh Patel in September on fraud charges for allegedly dealing in sham government-guaranteed loans.

Patel has denied wrongdoing.

Belleville Treasurer Dean Hardt says the city was able to recover $13.8 million it had invested with Illinois Metropolitan Investment Fund. Now the city is working with IMET and other cities to recover the lost money.

Florida man arrested at Chicago airport for gun in suitcase

CHICAGO – Authorities in Chicago say a Florida man has been arrested for having a loaded gun in his briefcase at Midway International Airport.

Chicago police say 46-year-old

Kurt Young of Tampa, Florida, faces a misdemeanor count of carrying a concealed firearm at an airport. Bail was set at $15,000.

Police say the gun was discovered Saturday morning in an X-ray machine at a security checkpoint.

Young posted bond and was released. He is due in court on April 24.

It was immediately unclear if Young had an attorney. A listed phone number for Kurt Young in Tampa called Sunday didn’t have voicemail.

Illinois joins high court case favoring same-sex marriage

CHICAGO – Illinois has joined a group of states filing arguments with the U.S. Supreme Court that the Constitution requires approval of same-sex marriage nationwide.

The brief was filed in connection with challenges of state laws in Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee that ban same-sex couples from marrying and refuse to recognize such marriages sanctioned by other states. The high court will hear oral arguments about those cases April 28.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan said Friday that the right of same-sex marriage is to ensure everyone has equal protection of the laws and to affirm that “all

individuals are equal.”

The friend-of-the-court brief the states filed says refusal to recognize same-sex marriage harms the couples seeking it and their families. Non-recognition affects their decisions about education, employment, residency and more.

U of I to oppose elimination of tuition waivers

SPRINGFIELD – University of Illinois officials say they will oppose a plan in the Legislature to abolish the 50 percent tuition waivers offered to children of school employees.

U of I spokesman Tom Hardy told the Champaign News-Gazette that the state’s flagship university will work with other colleges and university employee groups to emphasize the importance of the waivers to the employees and the state.

Rep. Jack Franks, a Woodstock Democrat, proposed the initiative. He said he will change the bill so waivers are phased out over four years instead of cut immediately. He said that’s a compromise with members of the House State Government Administration Committee.

Helen B. Monson, age 84, of Wilmington, passed away Thursday morning, March 5, 2015, at her home.

Born January 22, 1931, Helen Bernice was a daughter of the late Orean and Myrtle (Riggs) Adkins. She was raised in Ritchie and graduated from Wilmington High School. On September 30, 1950, Helen married Raymond Monson in Joliet and together they made their home in Wilmington. Helen was a member of the

First United Methodist Church of Wilmington and enjoyed being a homemaker. She took pleasure in traveling; collected Precious Moments and will be remembered for her candy making and cooking.

Survivors include her husband of more than 64 years, Raymond; four children, David (Pam) Monson and Bruce Monson, both of Wilmington, Ron (Carol) Monson of Braidwood and Janice (Mark) Phillips of Wilmington; one daughter-in-law, Linda Monson of Arizona; nine grandchildren, Caroline, David, Jr., Sharon, Craig, Donald, Lisa, Matt, Gary and Heidi; seven great grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Shirley (Joe) Marable of Tennessee; as, well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; son, Dennis; brother,

Russell; and sister, Josephine.

Visitation and video tribute will be held on Thursday, March 12, 2015, between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at Baskerville Funeral Home, 700 East Kahler Road in Wilmington. Cremation rites will be accorded following the visitation, and a memorial service will follow Friday morning, March 13th at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Reverend Thomas Kingery from the First United Methodist Church of Wilmington will officiate, and inurnment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Wilmington.

CHICAGO – One in every 10 Illinois state employees earned more than $100,000 last year with more than 100 workers doubling their pay with overtime or compensatory time, according to a newspaper report published Sunday.

The employees included judges, prison guards and nurses, according to The Chicago Sun-Times, which cited public records in its report. The newspaper reports that 682 workers made more than former Gov. Pat Quinn’s approximately $177,000 salary in 2014, most were judges.

Nearly $4.8 billion of taxpayer money was given to 82,104 full-time, part-time and contract workers on the state’s payroll.

Among the highest paid was the chief investment officer of the state Teachers Retirement System who earned nearly $450,000. TRS is the pension fund for suburban Chicago and downstate public educators.

agency, saying the employees have “highly specialized skills” that “in the private sector ... would demand salaries several times higher than what executives earn from TRS.” The newspaper’s report comes as Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner has blamed part of the state’s fiscal woes – including claims of inflated salaries – on labor unions.

The Sun-Times found that more than 80 percent of the highest-paid employees weren’t union members. Less than half of 8,854 state workers making $100,000 were union workers in state agencies that Rauner now overseas. Those making more than $100,000 included plumbers, child-welfare workers, court-reporting supervisors and highway maintenance workers.

The newspaper also found that 13 union workers received more than $90,000 in extra pay, mostly by working overtime.

They included nurses, corrections lieutenants and a stationary engineer.

Rauner’s administration declined to comment to the Sun-Times.

The newspaper matched the names of nearly 42,000 union workers against the state records supplied by the Illinois comptroller’s office. The SunTimes count doesn’t include state university employees.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS MH370 report: Beacon battery had expired

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – The first comprehensive report into the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 revealed Sunday that the battery of the locator beacon for the plane’s data recorder had expired more than a year before the jet vanished on March 8, 2014.

The report came as Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the hunt for the plane would not end even if the scouring of the current search area off Australia’s west coast comes up empty.

Apart from the anomaly of the expired battery, the detailed report devoted pages after pages describing the complete normality of the flight, which disappeared while heading from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, setting off aviation’s biggest mystery.

Feinstein urges Clinton to explain her email actions

WASHINGTON – Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton should fully explain her actions involving the use of a private, nongovernment email account when she was the country’s top diplomat, California Sen. Dianne Feinstein said Sunday, becoming the first major Democrat to urge Clinton to share more details of the private account.

Feinstein said the former first lady and New York senator “needs to step up and come out and say exactly what the situation was,” adding that from “this point on, the silence is going to hurt her.”

Clinton’s husband, former President Bill Clinton, avoided the controversy Sunday morning.

Asked whether his wife was treated fairly, Bill Clinton replied, “I’m not the one to judge that.

I have an opinion, but I have a bias.”

Hillary Clinton has been criticized for her use of the private email account and whether she complied with federal rules requiring officials to retain their communications. Clinton said that she’s turned over all relevant emails – totaling 55,000 pages – to the State Department for review.

Clinton urges action to achieve women’s equality

UNITED NATIONS – Hillary Rodham Clinton is urging the world to take action and address “the great unfinished business of the 21st century” – the achievement of equality for women that 189 nations called for at a groundbreaking U.N. conference 20 years ago.

Clinton came to the Beijing conference as the U.S. first lady and brought delegates to their feet in a keynote speech that inspired women around the world when she declared: “Human rights are women’s rights and women’s rights are human rights.” In the introduction to a new report on the status of women in 2015, she recalled those words and said the latest data provides evidence that advancing the full participation of women and girls expands global prosperity and stability.

By KIM CHANDLER and PHILLIP LUCAS The Associated Press SELMA, Ala. – Thousands of people crowded an Alabama bridge Sunday to commemorate a bloody confrontation 50 years ago between police and peaceful protesters that helped bring about the 1965 Voting Rights Act. A day after President Barack Obama had walked atop the Edmund Pettus Bridge, many jammed shoulder to shoulder, many unable to move, as they recalled the civil rights struggle.

Police said at least 15,000 to 20,000 people had joined the crush on and around the small bridge. Many came around the country for several events commemorating the landmark moment.

William Baldwin, 69, of Montgomery brought his two grandsons, ages 11 and 15, to the bridge Sunday so they could grasp the importance of the historic march he took part in a half century earlier.

“They’re going to take this

struggle on and we have to understand the price that was paid for them to have what they have now,” Baldwin said.

“It wasn’t granted to them, it was earned by blood, sweat and tears.”

Some sang hymns and others held signs, such as “Black lives matter, all lives matter.”

The crowd was so large that many appeared barely able to move as they peacefully sought to make their way across.

On March 7, 1965, police beat and tear-gassed marchers at the foot of the bridge in Selma in a spasm of violence that shocked the nation.

Earlier Sunday, Selma officials paid tribute to the late President Lyndon Johnson for the Voting Rights Act. The attack on demonstrators preceded a Selma-to-Montgomery march, which occurred two weeks later in 1965. Both helped build momentum for congressional approval of the Voting Rights Act later that year.

Luci Baines Johnson accepted the award on behalf of

her father, saying it meant so much to see him honored.

“You remember how deeply Daddy cared about social justice and how hard he worked to make it happen,” she told a crowd Sunday morning. Several hundred gave her a standing ovation and some chanted, “L.B.J., L.B.J.” An anniversary march from Selma to Montgomery is set to begin Monday morning and culminate with a rally at the Alabama Capitol Friday afternoon.

On Saturday, Obama joined civil rights leaders and others at the bridge and talked about progress in race relations since the 1960s. He mentioned recent clashes between citizens and law enforcement on the circumstances leading to fatal police shootings and law enforcement tactics toward minorities.

Obama was joined by others including Georgia Rep. John Lewis – an Alabama native who was among the demonstrators attacked by law officers on a march for equal voting rights.

The state Justice Department’s Division of Criminal Investigation has taken over the investigation under a new state law passed last year that requires an outside agency to lead probes of officer-involved shootings. DOJ spokeswoman Anne Schwartz declined to comment on Sunday.

Nigeria’s Boko Haram pledges Russian court charges allegiance to Islamic State group 2, detains 3 others in

By MICHELLE FAUL and HARUNA UMAR The Associated Press MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – Nigeria’s home-grown Boko Haram group, newly weakened by a multinational force that has dislodged it from a score of northeastern towns, reportedly pledged formal allegiance to the Islamic State group.

The pledge to IS came in an Arabic audio message with English subtitles alleged to have come from Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau and posted Saturday on Twitter, according to the SITE Intelligence monitoring service.

“We announce our allegiance to the Caliph of the Muslims ... and will hear and obey in times of difficulty and prosperity, in hardship and ease, and to endure being discriminated against, and not to dispute about rule with those in power, except in case of ev-

ident infidelity regarding that which there is a proof from Allah,” said the message. IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has declared himself the caliph.

Earlier, the Nigerian extremist group was blamed for four suicide bomb attacks that police said killed at least 54 people and wounded 143 in the northeast city of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state and birthplace of Boko Haram.

The blasts occurred over four hours in locations from a busy fish market to a crowded bus station, said Police Commissioner Clement Adoda.

A fifth explosion from a car bomb at a military checkpoint 50 miles outside the city wounded a soldier and two members of a civilian self-defense unit. The bomber apparently wanted to reach Maiduguri, said a police officer at the scene who spoke on condition of anonymity because

he is not allowed to speak to the press.

In the deadliest blast, 18 people died when a suicide bomber blew himself up in a tricycle taxi at the entrance to the bustling Baga fish market, police said.

“I saw many dead bodies lying on the ground, many dead, and several others badly injured,” said fish seller Idi Idrisa.

The Boko Haram pledge to IS comes as the Nigerian militants reportedly are massing in the northeastern town of Gwoza, considered their headquarters, for a showdown with the Chadian-led multinational force.

Though there was no way to independently verify the message, it comes weeks after Boko Haram’s new Twitter account broadcast that the group’s Shura council was considering whether to swear formal allegiance to IS.

Boris Nemtsov killing The ASSOCIATED PRESS MOSCOW – Five men were behind bars Sunday either charged or suspected in the killing of Kremlin critic Boris Nemtsov, but details remained unclear in the case that has shaken Russia’s marginalized and struggling opposition movement.

The five appeared in a Moscow court, where two of them were charged in connection with the shooting of Nemtsov as he walked across a bridge near the Kremlin on Feb. 27. The other three were remanded to jail pending the filing of charges, which Russian law requires within 10 days.

Russian news reports meanwhile cited unnamed sources as saying another suspect had killed himself with a grenade after police

blocked his apartment on Saturday in Grozny, the capital of the republic of Chechnya. There was no official comment from Moscow on the reports, but Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov appeared to partially confirm it Sunday.

One of the judges in the two separate hearings said suspect Zaur Dadaev had acknowledged involvement, but Dadaev did not admit guilt in the courtroom, according to state-run and independent news agencies in Russia. The other suspect who was charged, Anzor Gubashev, denied guilt, the reports said.

The three others include Gubashev’s younger brother Shagid, along with Khamzad Bakhaev and Tamerlan Eskerkhanov, state news agency Tass reported.

MADISON, Wis. – Within hours of a white officer shooting an unarmed black man, the police chief of Wisconsin’s capital city was praying with the man’s grandmother, hoping to strike a conciliatory tone and avoid the riots that last year rocked Ferguson, Missouri.

Chief Mike Koval said he knows Madison is being watched across the nation since 19-year-old Tony Robinson’s death Friday evening, and he has gone out of his way to avoid what he once called Ferguson’s “missteps.”

“Folks are angry, resentful, mistrustful, disappointed, shocked, chagrined. I get that,” Koval said Saturday.

“People need to tell me squarely how upset they are with the Madison Police Department.”

The contrasts with Ferguson are many.

While Ferguson police initially gave little information about the shooting of Mi-

chael Brown, an 18-year-old, unarmed black man, Koval rushed to the home of Robinson’s mother. She didn’t want to meet with him, he said, but he talked and prayed with Robinson’s grandmother in the driveway for 45 minutes.

It took a week for Ferguson to release the name of the officer who shot Brown.

Koval announced the name of the officer involved in Madison, Matt Kenny, the day after the shooting. He volunteered to reporters that the officer had been in a previous fatal shooting in 2007 and that he had been cleared of wrongdoing.

On the day that Ferguson police named the officer who shot Brown, they also released video showing what they said was Brown robbing a store.

When Koval was asked about Robinson’s past criminal record Saturday, he declined to comment, saying it would be inappropriate to do so a day after the man died.

It is no secret the Plainfield East boys basketball team has not had the season it had hoped to enjoy.

On one Friday night in early March, however, all was forgotten. The Bengals, the No. 6 seed in the Class 4A Lincoln-Way North Regional, knocked off No. 3 Plainfield North, 56-44, to win the regional title and advance to the semifinals of the Bolingbrook Sectional.

The neighboring rivals met twice in the Southwest Prairie Conference. Each won once, although North was the conference champion.

The Tigers, 22-4 entering the regional final, had loftier goals. They not only felt they belonged at Bolingbrook this week, but they rightfully felt they had a chance to win what on paper appears to be one of the state’s most competitive sectionals.

“This year was great, but I can’t say we’re happy now,” North coach Bob Krahulik said after the game. “We had bigger aspirations [than 22 victories and an SPC title].

This hurts now, and it’s going to hurt for a while.

“We’ll miss our seniors.

They’ve been great players with a great work ethic. They busted their butts every day.”

East, meanwhile, was 17-11 entering Friday’s game. With University of Illinois-bound Aaron Jordan leading the way, the Bengals understandably had thoughts early on of getting to the point where they could be the No. 1 sectional seed.

However, close losses in the championship games of the Thanksgiving tournament at St. Charles and Christmas tournament at Pekin, other narrow setbacks, an injury that sidelined Jordan for a while and not always playing at peak efficiency relegated the Bengals to the 6 seed.

“We had too many second places,” East coach Brandon Adkins said. “We lost a lot of close games. However, I do feel we are battle tested and ready for this [postseason].”

A good sign is that Jordan appears to be back from the deep thigh bruise that interfered with his season.

“Aaron put a lot of pressure on himself, and it took awhile for him to get back into the mix after he was hurt,” Adkins said. “Now he is getting better lift on his jump shot, and he’s making better decisions.”

The Bengals’ sectional semifinal is at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Bolingbrook. East can be a good match for the Raiders from a size and athletic standpoint. With 6-foot-8 James Claar and 6-foot-7 Elyjah Goss on the front line with Kotopka, and Jordan an athletic 6-foot-5, the Bengals can go toe to toe with anyone.

“Elyjah [Goss] has done a lot for us on the boards, and Cole [Kotopka] rebounds, too,” Adkins said. “Cole is naturally strong, and he’s a great leader.

“When he decided after football season to come out, we said we would take whatever he can give us. Little by little, he has worked his way into the lineup and has

helped us.”

The Bengals’ wild card is 5-foot-10 point guard Wynston Wright, a senior defensive specialist. He shadowed North’s Trevor Stumpe, who scored 20 points but hit a subpar 6 of 20 shots. Bolingbrook’s main man, Prentiss Nixon, may see a lot of Wright on Wednesday night.

For a while now, the thought was that we should have great matchups on the sectional level, but with a bonus. The regional championship game between East and North would be of the same quality as what we will see in the sectional.

That it was. And there was more to savor in the regional finals. Kudos to Joliet Central, which took Bolingbrook to overtime, and Minooka, whose young team gave Neuqua a good battle all night.

Yes, the Class 4A regional week was outstanding. Let’s keep the momentum going.

Youth is served as Minooka eyes future

By MIKE FITZGERALD Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – As the clock ran down in Neuqua Valley’s 41-33 Class 4A Joliet West Regional championship game victory over Minooka on Friday night, the Wildcats’ student section chanted, “Maybe next year.”

The Neuqua Valley fans don’t know it, but that chant may come true for the Indians, who finished the season with a 15-16 record.

Minooka started a freshman, Keegan Graebner; a sophomore, Jon Butler; and three juniors – Joe Butler, Larry Roberts and Blake Parzych – in the title game. The team graduates three seniors but will have an infusion of talent from a sophomore team that won the Southwest Prairie Conference title.

“It was our first taste of a regional championship in 15 years, and it was great just being a part of the atmosphere,” Minooka coach Scott Tanaka said. “I think we are just as good as that team (Neuqua Valley), but obviously they’ve been there before. It’s a credit to our guys. We gave them a

scare. It doesn’t matter how young we are. We came out and battled.”

The one thing the Indians have learned is the importance of playing defense. Minooka players were chest to chest with the Wildcats all night. It is one reason Neuqua Valley didn’t pull away from the Indians in the second quarter when Minooka went scoreless.

The halftime score was 14-6.

“That’s our staple,” Tanaka said. “We are a defensive basketball team. Our kids do a great job of buying into everything that we do. Not a lot of kids say, ‘Hey, coach, I want to play as hard defensively as you want me to.’ And our kids do it, and I absolutely love them for it.”

Another trait the Indians players possess is a never-saydie attitude. Minooka trailed, 30-16, at the start of the fourth quarter. The Indians could have packed it in against the top seed in the Bolingbrook Sectional knowing another chance awaits them next season, but they did not quit.

“We’ve had to come back several times during the season,” Jon Butler said. “We’ve

The stands on the visitors side were filled with Minooka fans. The Indians’ student section shouted down the Wildcats’ student section most of the game. When it was over, the players filed out to a standing ovation from their crowd.

“It’s great feeling,” Jon Butler said. “We made it this far. We have a young team.

We’re just looking forward to next season.”

Joe Butler believes the returning group has the work ethic it will take to get Minooka basketball to the next level.

It’s a level Neuqua Valley reached this season with a 20plus win season, a top seed in the Bolingbrook Sectional and a regional championship.

“We have a chance to be like them,” Joe Butler said.

“We have to go out and play like we did this year and get a little better and get more experience. I’m really excited to see how it turns out next year.

There are a lot of guys on this team who are really dedicated, especially the younger guys.

There were freshmen and sophomores who really came out and pushed us in practice and made us better.”

“The future is bright,” Tanaka said. “The kids are buying into what we are teaching. It’s exciting. You saw what the fans were like out there. They energized us. The kids should be really proud of what they were able to do.”

No. 2 Lewis women fall in GLVC semifinal SUBMITTED REPORT ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The No. 2-ranked Lewis women’s basketball team saw its hopes for a Great Lakes Valley Conference championship end Saturday night in a 71-66 loss to Southern Indiana in the GLVC Tournament semifinals at Family Arena.

The Flyers (28-2) grabbed an 18-3 lead on a 14-0 run.

But Southern Indiana (25-5) scored the next 14 points as Lewis missed seven consecutive shots. By halftime, the Flyers had recovered and led, 30-21.

Southern Indiana scored the first 10 points of the second half to lead, 31-30. It was the first of 11 lead changes in the second half, when the Eagles outrebounded the Fly-

ers, 22-12. Jamie Johnson’s three-point play with 5:29 remaining put Lewis up, 61-58.

It would be the Flyers’ final lead, although they did tie it at 63-all and 65-all.

Southern Indiana shot 42.4 percent on 25 of 59 while limiting Lewis to its second-worst shooting performance of the season, 35.0 percent, on 21 of 60. Jess Reinhart finished with a team-high 14 points for Lewis. Mariyah Brawner-Henley added 13, Johnson 12 and Kristin Itschner 10.

Minooka’s Peter Andreano won the high jump, long jump and triple jump. Justin Wolz set a school record in the 600 (1:26.55), while the 4x200 relay of Mitch Miller, Victor Turpin, Maceo Findlay and Chris Hopkins claimed the No. 1 ranking in the state (1:33.10).

Chris Hopkins won the 60 (7.21) and 200 (23.36), Kevin Lam the shot put (47-11) and Ryan Pullar the pole vault (140).

Minooka’s Mackenzie Callahan won the 3,200 (11:33.30) and Emily Ellis won the 800 (2:38.89). Olivia Klank and Kelsey Oliva took the high jump in Class C and Class B, respectively. Kayla Brooks tied for first in the Class C pole vault (7 feet) and Brook Lynn Bachmann broke the school record in the pole vault and finished first in Class B with a 9-3. The previous record of 9 feet was set in 2003 by Dian Canaday.

Benet tops Fremd as Class 4A champion The ASSOCIATED PRESS NORMAL – According to her coach, Benet Academy’s Kathleen Doyle can score zero points and still dominate a basketball game.

She scored considerably more than zero Saturday – 18 points, to be exact – while leading Benet Academy to its first state championship, defeating Palatine Fremd, 61-39.

“Everything runs through Kathleen,” said coach Joe Kilbride. “She’s a unique player in that the entire offense and defense goes through her or is run by her. Her stat line can show a zero, and she still wins games for us. She dominates all facets of the game.”

Doyle’s aggressive play sparked a 9-0 run late that sealed the victory, including one sequence in which she took the inbounds pass and dribbled casually the entire court to lay the ball in through three defenders.

“We struggled at that point,” said Palatine coach Dave Yates. “During that stretch in the fourth quarter (the 9-0 run), we played some good defense. But let’s face it – you can’t get 10 stops in a row.”

Doyle wasn’t alone in leading Benet Academy (343). Emily Schramek scored 15 points, and Katie Jaseckas added 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Redwings.

“This entire team is incredibly resilient,” Kilbride said. “Everyone did their part tonight. I told them at halftime, you’re tied (21-21) for the state championship.

Let’s see if you have what it takes to go out there and take it. They had it.”

Doyle was thrilled with the win but gave much of the credit to her teammates.

A Hollywood scriptwriter couldn’t have asked for a better story to follow than ReedCuster’s boys basketball team during its historic season.

That’s because all of the pieces of the puzzle seemed to be falling into place for the Comets to add another memorable moment to a campaign that already had featured more highlights than most programs get to experience.

But as is often the case, another talented and wellcoached team senses it can accomplish something special, and it makes the most of the opportunity.

So instead of getting to celebrate a sectional championship Friday night in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Class 2A El Paso-Gridley Sectional, the Comets had to watch dejectedly as the plaque was handed to St. Edward as their season ended by an 85-69 score.

“The kids have a lot to be proud of,” Comets coach Mark Porter said. “They set state and national records for 3-point shots made. We had an awful lot of highlights – like we were undefeated at home and things like that – but it still stinks.

No matter where we wound up stubbing our toe, whether it was the next round or downstate, it was still going to hurt.

“They achieved an awful lot of their goals. One of those was to get farther than they did last year, and there were a few other goals conference-wise that we didn’t achieve. But if someone would have told me that we’d have 25 wins, I think you’d look at that and smile.”

Coach P.J. White’s 26-5 Green Wave used their physical style to disrupt ReedCuster’s attack from the outset.

The 25-6 Comets struggled to get into their fast-paced offense, which had been averaging 89.4 points a contest.

The Comets had set state and national 3-point records after connecting on 437 3-pointers, an average of 14.5 a game, going into the sectional title game.

But they struggled shooting the long ball, making only nine

SAN ANTONIO – Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said his team’s goal the remainder of the season is simple – just win.

Tony Parker playing well makes that a lot easier.

Parker had a season-high 32 points and just one turnover in leading San Antonio Spurs to their fifth straight victory, 116-105, over the Bulls on Sunday.

“Tony is playing at a high level again, that makes a big difference for them,” Bulls center Pau Gasol said. “It’s tough to beat them that way.”

Parker is returning to his All-Star form after being hindered much of the season by a strained hamstring that forced him to miss 13 games.

He is again driving hard to the lane for his usual array of spins, layups, floaters and quick passes to teammates for corner 3-pointers.

“I’m still dealing with some stuff, but I’m going to fight through it,” Parker said. “I’m tired of talking about it. I kept saying I’m going to fight through it, and I would rather play than stay out.”

Parker, averaging 25 points in his past three games, shot 13 for 19 and had two assists in 30 minutes.

Defending champ Harvick grabs his 1st win of season at Las Vegas

By JENNA FRYER The Associated Press LAS VEGAS – Defending NASCAR champion Kevin Harvick raced to his first victory of the season Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The win came in just the third race of the season, and Harvick has been inching toward victory lane since he began his title defense. He finished second in the season-opening Daytona 500; he was second last week at Atlanta; and, dating back to last season, he has six consecutive top-two finishes. He also has won three of the last six races dating to last season.

Harvick isn’t looking too far ahead, however.

“We just have to keep our heads down and keep doing everything that we’ve been

doing,” he said. “This isn’t a bunch of guys that are just going to go out and brag. We’re going to race every week like we have never won a race before. That’s the kind of determination that you need when you are going to do this stuff.”

Harvick now has a win that gives him a near-certain berth in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship, where he’d be guaranteed a shot to defend his title. The Chase format awards slots into the playoff via regular-season wins.

“It feels pretty good. I’m pretty excited about it,” Harvick said. “This whole Chase thing, there is a lot of strategy to get in to it. The best strategy is to go out and win races.”

Next up for Harvick? A stop at Phoenix, where Harvick has won four of the last five races.

His November win pushed him

into the championship race.

Harvick led 142 of the 267 laps, and he beat Martin Truex Jr. to the finish. He did it while battling a vibration that developed after his final pit stop.

“It got to be a handful there at the end,” Harvick said. “For whatever reason, we got really, really loose the last run.

Tires started vibrating, and we were just kind of hanging on.

Glad the race is over for our own good.”

Truex was second and now has three top-eight finishes to open the season. He only had one top-five finish last year, his first with Furniture Row Racing.

18-point first-half deficit to beat Illinois State, 69-60, in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament championship game on Sunday.

“I knew we weren’t out of it,” said forward Nate Buss, who had 15 points with two blocks. “We’re not ranked 11th in the country for nothing. We’re not just going to lay down and die. We knew we were going to come back.”

The Panthers (30-3) took control with a 25-4 run that erased a 36-22 halftime deficit. Jeremy Morgan had three 3-pointers in the run and Tuttle, the Valley player of the year and tournament MVP, added eight points, often getting loose from constant double-teaming.

“He really exerted his will,” Illinois State coach Dan Muller said. “When were in zone, they got it in to Tuttle, when we went man, they got it in to Tuttle.”

Alfred Nobel, he of the eponymous prizes, made this surprising observation: “Second to agriculture, humbug is the biggest industry of our age.”

Last week we looked at deals that gave the declarer a second chance to make his contract – no humbug.

Sometimes, he had to choose the better approach; on others, he could try both options if he planned the play correctly. Here is one more.

South is in three no-trump. What should he do after West leads the heart queen?

South, with so many aces and kings, might have upgraded his hand and opened two clubs. That may have persuaded North to look for a high-level club contract. Here, five clubs would have made. Six clubs would have been a fair but unsuccessful contract. Declarer would have needed clubs 3-2 and either diamonds 4-3 or spades 3-3, which I make just over 51 percent. (Plus a fraction for an opponent being squeezed when he holds four-plus spades and five-plus diamonds.)

South has eight top tricks: two spades, two hearts, one diamond and three clubs. The immediate reaction is to assume a 3-2 club split and expect to roll home with two overtricks. But if clubs are 4-1 or 5-0, is there any chance?

Yes – perhaps the spades are 3-3.

Declarer should win the first trick and lead his low spade (or play three rounds of the suit). South takes the next heart and cashes his two top spades. Here, they break 3-3, and the contract is assured. And when clubs do not divide favorably, declarer and dummy are happy. **

assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. She noted that the following medications are especially likely to have significant side effects in older people: • BENZODIAZEPINES. These medications are used to treat anxiety or insomnia.

• Medications containing DIPHENHYDRAMINE. This drug is found in allergy medications and sleep aids.

• ANTIDEPRESSANTS. Both older, tricyclic antidepressants and newer antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) can cause worrisome side effects.

• SLEEPING PILLS. These drugs cause next-day drowsiness and increase the risk of falls and fractures.

The next time you see your doctor, bring all of your prescription and over-the-counter drugs and supplements with you. Just put them in a bag. It’s much easier than writing down a list of your medicines. And if your handwriting is as unclear as doctors’ handwriting can be, the written list may cause problems. And sometimes the drug or dose your provider thinks you use isn’t exactly the same as the one you are taking. Bringing in everything is a good way for the doctor to see what you’re taking.

Finally, ask your doctor the same two questions of every drug in the bag: “Do I need to be taking this?” and “Could I get by with a lower dose?” It’s an entirely appropriate question, and your doctor should be pleased, not annoyed, that you’ve asked it.

Dear Doctor K: I’m in my 70s. Every day I take 10 medications, many of which I have been taking for years. How do I know if all of these drugs are still necessary?

Dear Reader: You’ve asked an important question. It should be a part of every medical visit for your doctor to review your medicines. There are several reasons that I say this.

First, doctors’ visits these days are pretty short. We often feel rushed to cover everything in the time available. Even though we should be reviewing the medicines that a person is taking, we sometimes don’t.

Second, particularly when people see more than one doctor, they can sometimes be on more medicines than are necessary. One doctor may even prescribe a medicine that has a negative interaction with a medicine another doctor has prescribed.

Third, our bodies change as we get older.

Our kidneys and liver clear drugs from the body.

As we age, these two organs clear drugs more slowly. As a result, drugs remain at higher levels in the blood for a longer time. That means a dose of a drug that was optimal for you 20 years ago may be too high today.

People also gain fat and lose muscle mass with age.

This shift also changes the way drugs are distributed to and broken down in body tissues.

Fourth, more drugs are available without prescription these days.

People are taking more over-the-counter medications than they did 20 years ago. That includes vitamins, minerals and other supplements. These medicines, too, can have negative interactions with prescription medicines.

Because drugs stay in the body longer as we age, their side effects can be more severe. I spoke to my colleague Dr. Sarah Berry,

Major risk factors for kidney disease include diabetes, high blood pressure, a family history of kidney failure and being age 60 or older. Additional risk factors include kidney stones, smoking, obesity and cardiovascular disease.

Kidney disease often goes undetected because it lacks physical symptoms until the very late stages. By then the organs have already failed.

But early detection, healthy lifestyle changes and proper treatment can slow the progress of kidney disease.

Those at risk should have simple blood and urine tests to check if their kidneys are working properly.

Dear Abby: My 17-year-old son told me he has finally had his first kiss, and it was with another boy. I’m not sure what to think.

When he was in eighth grade, he had a crush on a girl named “Lisa.” She rejected him because she had a girlfriend. Then he dated a girl, “Annie,” but it didn’t last because he said he felt only friendship for her. Then he became friends with this boy “Joey” in high school, who spent the night several times. He told me from the start this boy was gay (this is the boy he kissed). Now Joey has a girlfriend.

To say the least, I’m confused. I know that in this generation, everything is acceptable. I have no problem if my son is gay, and I will love him no matter what, but I honestly think he is just confused. (He says this, too.) Is there anything I can do to help him through this?

Dear Abby: Hypertension runs in my family, but as a pretty healthy 49-year-old, I didn’t think much about it. I never realized that my pounding headaches were a direct result of high blood pressure. To make matters worse, the same high blood pressure that was causing my head to throb was also destroying my kidneys.

I wish I had known about my high blood pressure sooner and taken it seriously. When I finally learned about my kidney damage, it was too late to save them.

More than 73 million people are at risk for developing kidney disease, and I sincerely want to help them avoid this fate. My battle with kidney disease has turned me into an advocate for patients and those who are at risk. TERMINAL MANAGER

Manages all day-to-day operational activities at the terminal assuring all activities are accomplished in an efficient, cost-effective, and safe manner. This is a working manager position, must be willing and able to help in the terminal when necessary. A CDL is required.

Foster an environment that encourages consistent focus on management of revenue and cost control.

Communicates areas of responsibility and performance expectations, while fostering a corporative & harmonious working climate to maximize employee morale and productivity.

Ensure laborers have the required training to perform job responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner.
