JOLIET – Drumaine McKinley turned 37 years old Monday. He decided not to testify in his own defense during his murder trial.

Closing arguments are scheduled for Tuesday before jurors decide whether the evidence they’ve seen in the last week showed McKinley viciously killed the woman he’d arranged Drumaine S. to meet in a laundry room McKinley at Evergreen Terrace or was challenging a would-be robber.

Prosecutors did not challenge the defense’s claim that Joslyn Woods, 20, brought the knife to 363 N. Broadway St. the morning of Sept. 3, 2014. McKinley and Woods had arranged a paid sexual encounter online, but when there was a dispute over money and she brought out the knife, McKinley stabbed Woods repeatedly.

A forensic pathologist who performed Woods’ autopsy testified last week she had been stabbed too many times to count.

McKinley left Evergreen Terrace a few minutes later and walked to downtown Joliet. The shirt he was seen wearing in the recording was discovered by police in a garbage can later that morning, according to trial testimony. A lab technician testified stains on the shirt, including a handprint on the back shoulder, are Woods’ blood.

If convicted of murder, McKinley faces from 20 to 60 years in prison. At the time of Woods’ slaying, he was two months away from the end of his parole on a six-year sentence for unauthorized possession of a firearm following a 2009 arrest.

McKinley acknowledged shooting someone in an unrelated incident during his interview with police, but prosecutors agreed before the trial that those statements be edited out of the video shown to jurors.

Pa. women charged with marijuana trafficking near Minooka

mmallory@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Two women were arrested over the weekend by Illinois State Police after troopers found about 11 pounds of marijuana in their possession.

ca L. Wagner, 27 – both of Pennsylvania – were traveling eastbound Saturday afternoon on Interstate 80 when troopers initiated a traffic stop at mile marker 118 near Minooka, State Police District 5 Sgt. Brad Angus said.

Bonaminio and Wagner were arrested at 3:02 p.m. and charged with marijuana

trafficking, a Class 1 felony.

The amount of marijuana found was just short of the amount categorized as warranting Class X felony charges. According to Illinois law, trafficking of marijuana becomes a Class X felony and carries a longer prison sentence when more than 11.02 pounds, or 5,000 grams, are found.

A Plainfield man suffered a fatal heart attack before crashing his car last week in Romeoville.

Will County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil said Stephen Platko’s death was the result of natural causes, not injuries from the crash.

“He was wearing a cardiac monitor, and we had a cardiologist look at the results,” O’Neil said.

Allen said McKinley had received six stitches to close an inch-long cut between his right thumb and forefinger and had another slice to the palm of his left hand.

McKinley told Joliet police Woods had come at him with the knife and he’d gotten cut while taking it.

“For you to have a knife behind your back. [What] the [expletive]? What kind of game is that?” McKinley said to police during a recorded interview that was played to jurors Friday.

State, higher education officials seeking solutions for MAP grants

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – For Rosalva Patino’s family, higher education is expensive for students and parents alike.

That’s why Patino, along with her husband, was registering her son last week for financial aid at a Free Application for Federal Student Aid workshop held at Joliet Junior College.

Patino said her daughter, who attends Lewis University, benefits from student aid through the state’s Monetary Award Program grants.

She said she didn’t think Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto in February of legislation that would have funded MAP grants was a wise decision.

“I think these kids need help,” Patino said. “It’s going to hurt the state in many ways if [students] can’t pay for school. A lot of kids will drop out.”

Some universities and colleges statewide are struggling with funding MAP grants, which are for students attending a MAP-approved school who demonstrate financial need. With the ongoing state budget impasse, lawmakers have tried to pass bills that would release funding for the grants.

Linda Thompson, JJC assistant financial aid director, said the state not funding MAP hasn’t affected the college’s students yet.

“Students are concerned about the future, sure, but because JJC has decided to honor the MAP grant, it hasn’t directly impacted the students,” she said.

State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, said the need to fund MAP grants is urgent. Higher education advocates are trying to determine what Rauner wants that would allow for funding the grants, he said.

“We’re trying to figure out what the governor wants. He, to my knowledge, has not released his master plan for higher education in Illinois. … Absent a plan from the governor, our schools are forced to make changes in a panic mode rather than in a thoughtful way,” McGuire said.

McGuire filed Senate Bill 2226 in January to appropriate $168 million to the Illinois Student Assistance Commission that would reimburse money that universities and colleges fronted for MAP grants last fall semester. The bill had its first reading Jan. 13 in the Senate.

MAP grant funding still may come from another proposed piece of legislation, House Bill 2990, filed Feb. 24,

2015, by House Speaker Michael Madigan, D-Chicago.

The bill, which passed the House and had its first reading Friday in the Senate, would appropriate about $397 million to ISAC from the General Revenue Fund for students eligible for

MAP. In a statement, Rauner criticized the bill because “Illinois taxpayers cannot afford [it].”

Rauner stated support for other legislation that would “achieve major taxpayer savings to pay for higher education and MAP grants,” such as House Bill 6409 and House Bill 4539.

HB 4539 would appropriate $1.6 billion for state universities, community colleges and MAP grants.

JJC Board President Robert Wunderlich said JJC, which has been fronting the funds for MAP grants, will try to fund them for another semester, whether through reserves in the budget or a loan from the college’s foundation.

Wilhelmi leads Illinois Health and Hospital Association

JOLIET – Joliet native and former area state senator AJ Wilhelmi is three months into his new gig leading the Illinois Health and Hospital Association.

But the new president and CEO is no stranger to the health care system’s ever-evolving landscape, including the

advent of the Affordable Care Act and the unique challenges faced by hospitals in a cash-strapped Illinois.

He took the helm Jan. 1 after serving as IHA’s chief government relations officer. At the same time, the Illinois Hospital Association merged with the Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council – hence the name change – in efforts to strengthen the organizations’ voice

on local, state and federal health care issues.

“When I get up in the morning, and I think about going in to work, I get really excited because this is a really important time in health care. I have the honor of working with our hospital members in advancing quality health care for their communities,” Wilhelmi said. “And though there are significant

challenges, we feel really good about the integration of two organizations that have been around for a long time.”

Five Democrats square off in Will County Board District 1 race

BEECHER – Will County Board member Bob Howard, who represents District 1, will face off against four opponents in the March 15 Democratic primary: Joseph Roudez III, of University Park; Sherry Newquist, of Steger; Laurie Summers, of Crete; and Chere’se Williams, of University Park.

The board has 26 members – or two seats in each of the 13 districts. Incumbent Judy Ogalla, R-Monee, and candidate Natalie Murawski, of Peotone, will run unopposed in the Republican primary next week for District 1 seats.

The district includes communities such as Peotone, Beecher, Monee and Crete.

BOB HOWARD

Before joining the County Board in 2011, Howard, 55, of Beecher, served as the Washington Township supervisor.

Howard graduated from Beecher High School, is married with four children and works for the Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters.

Howard said as past Legislative and Policy Committee chairman, he was instrumental in the passage of Illinois legislation allowing Will County to enact a court user fee – estimated to annually raise about $1.5 million to $2 million – to help pay for the construction of a new courthouse.

Faced with limited resources and a growing list of road projects, Will County is going through a critical planning phase as the board considers whether to issue up to $275 million in bonds for major capital projects.

To avoid raising taxes or cutting services, county leaders agreed to pull from various revenue sources – including a percentage of the county’s road sales tax fund – to pay back bonds over decades. Howard said while he doesn’t like the idea of touching the road fund, it’s the best scenario.

“The stage is being set. [The county] may need additional revenue someday,”

Howard said, noting the county’s rising health care costs and union contracts that have to be honored.

Sherry Newquist, 59, of Steger said she holds a master’s degree in finance from the University of Chicago. Her 27 years in the financial industry, including several years as a sales manager, helped her prepare for a role on the County Board.

“My job was to help customers analyze problems and create solutions,” Newquist said.

She said she often served as the tie-breaking vote while with the Steger-South Chicago Heights Library Board, which she described as “contentious.” Newquist said she hopes to carry that role to the County Board by voting her conscience.

Laurie Summers, 57, of Crete is a registered nurse with Addus Home Health.

She serves as program coordinator for the Feed Our Own meals program for eastern Will County, which supplies meals for low-income seniors.

Summers said key issues for District 1 include the need for an east-west route for truck traffic. The on-again, off-again Illiana tollway project is much needed to alleviate traffic congestion, she said.

“My biggest concern is all the truck traffic that we’re getting on our local roads because truckers are cutting across from Joliet into Indiana,” Summers said.

Revisions to Playa Vista development questioned

vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Village trustees Monday sympathized with resident Christina Kupkowski’s plight when the developer for her unfinished neighborhood proposed significant changes to the subdivision’s plans.

Kupkowski was one of the first, and one of the last, people to buy a home in the Playa Vista subdivision southeast of the Ridge Road and 135th Street intersection in Kendall County.

She said she moved into a new townhome in 2014 with the anticipation that she was entering into a community that would soon be populated by 185 similarly situated individuals and families. She also was looking forward to a new clubhouse with amenities that would be built nearby.

But a proposal by the subdivision developer, New Lenox-based Hartz Construction, would eliminate 180 of those townhome units, replacing them with single-family detached homes.

The plans for the clubhouse also were traded in for a 4.25-acre park to be dedicated to the Oswegoland Park District.

Hartz representative Mike Martin said Playa Vista wasn’t selling with the original 2007 plans for the property, which called for 221 single-family detached ranch-style homes and 186 townhome units.

“We’ve spent millions of dollars on this,” Martin said. “It hasn’t worked.”

So, Martin said, the developer was forced to change those plans for a senior-living oriented community into a single-family community of 315 two-story homes and the remaining six townhomes.

Kupkowski said her townhouse will be surrounded by larger model homes, and that it will be very hard to sell her property should she want to move in the future.

“So now, not only will my townhouse be unique in a subdivision, it will be out of place and dwarfed by its neighbors,” she said.

plan, noting that two other homeowners who bought ranch-style homes were fine with the new plans. He also said Hartz would talk with Kupkowski about how to make it work with her before the village board votes on any plans or annexation amendments for the development.

But village trustees said the developer was putting Kupkowski in a tough position. They were more concerned with the technicalities of having a homeowner’s association for the small, six-unit townhome project.

“I think your plan is good and I would certainly support that,” Trustee Bill Lamb said. “But I’m more concerned about the homeowner’s association. I think you need to maintain strong involvement with homeowners.”

Martin said residents could be more inclined to pay their homeowner’s association dues because the small community would encourage more interaction with neighbors. He also said a similar plan has worked for a development in Bolingbrook.

Trustee Brian Wojowski noted that one stipulation to approve the project change is that the plans aren’t “injurious to the use and enjoyment of other property in the immediate area.” But Wojowski noted that Kupkowski is harmed by the change.

Martin said Kupkowski’s property wouldn’t sell if the plans aren’t changed. He also noted that he will talk with Kupkowski to work out the issues.

Trustee Edward O’Rourke said he didn’t buy it.

“I think you’re setting her up for failure,” O’Rourke said, suggesting that Hartz should come up with a plan besides a 6-unit townhome unit.

Trustees recommended the developer to talk the issues out with Kupkowski and come back with a solution.

Manley and other Democratic legislators from the Joliet area, however, did direct blame toward the governor.

“I agree with the statement that the governor and Legislature need to concentrate on, quote, key components of the budget,” said state Sen. Patrick McGuire, D-Joliet.

Democratic legislators argue the governor is focused on his “turnaround agenda,” not the budget.

The letter outlines cuts in services and staff that have been made at Stepping Stones, the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living, Cornerstone Services and Senior Services of Will County.

“The economic and social progress that’s been made in the Joliet area and other communities across the state, by way of dialogue and cooperation, is under direct threat of being wiped away by state-level officials’ refusal to do the same,” the letter states.

The letter also notes a decline in the business climate preceding the budget crisis, saying Illinois has lost nearly 800,000 residents in the past 13 years as median household income has declined.

PLAINFIELD – The polling place for Plainfield voters in Precinct 20 has been changed for the March 15 primary election, according to a news release from the Will County Clerk’s office.

Plainfield Precinct 20’s polling place has been moved to Wesmere Elementary School, 2001 Wesmere Parkway in Plainfield.

The venue is changed “due to an unfortunate accident,” according to the Monday news release. Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots did not immediately respond to a request for comment to clarify what occurred.

JOLIET – The Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry has sent a letter to Gov. Bruce Rauner and legislators saying economic and social progress made in the Joliet area is being “wiped away” by the actions of state leaders.

The letter which outlines cuts being made by local social service agencies, argues that the business climate in Illinois is being ruined by the state budget crisis and suggests the fault lies with the state’s political leaders.

“Partisan opposition and tactical maneuvering are not new elements to the political landscape in Illinois or in the nation,” the letter reads. “So this begets the question, are the issues Illinois is presently facing any more complex than those of the past, or is the current roster of political participants simply not up to the task?”

The letter has an unusually severe tone for a local chamber organization.

Local chambers typically try to stay out of the political fray while promoting causes favorable to its members.

But Chamber President Mary Jaworski said some members are getting “unnerved” by the stalemate in Springfield and the toll it is taking on the Joliet area.

“I think people are really starting to get nervous about this and want to see resolution,” Jaworski said.

The letter went out last week as the chamber prepares to host a luncheon Tuesday at which Rauner’s appointed comptroller, Joliet native Leslie Munger, will speak on the topic “Illinois’ Challenging Fiscal Environment: Charting a New Course to Prosperity.”

The letter is addressed only to Rauner. But Jaworski and Chamber Vice President Michael Paone said it is not meant to blame any one person.

“It ultimately falls on the shoulders of every politician down there [in Springfield],” Paone said. “That letter was sent to a total of 14 people.”

Among them were legislative leaders and local legislators.

“I don’t blame them for being angry,” state Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, said of the letter. “It’s harsh, but it speaks to the level of their concern.”

fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT TOWNSHIP – Percy Conway said his career as a barber had to start some place.

That place was on his father’s porch when he was 10 and living in Mississippi. He said he was cutting people’s hair and became good enough that he developed a clientele.

When Conway moved to Illinois in his late teens, after fighting in the Korean War and working a series of jobs, he opened a barbershop years later that has remained open for 50 years.

“I think it would be something of interest for people to know and motivate younger people on what can be done,” Conway said about the longevity of his shop. “If you put your mind on what you really want to accomplish in life, then move in that direction.”

Conway is the owner of Conway’s Hi-Styling Beauty Center, 3226 S. State St. in Lockport, which also is located in the incorporated community known as Fairmont. Conway said he has a strong passion for barbering.

“I’ve been doing it all my life,” he said.

“Most of the time I sit here to entertain people and keep up the atmosphere,” Conway said.

Besides running the barbershop, Conway also has been involved in lo-

cal politics, pushing to rip the barrier of minority participation in local elected offices.

He served on many government boards and also served as a Lockport Township trustee for more than 20 years. He said he was involved with the township because he wanted more leverage to secure funds to improve the area.

“I wasn’t going any place. I was going to stay here,” he said.

Lockport Township Supervisor Ron Alberico was mentored by Conway when he decided to get involved.

“He told me a lot of great stories. … He mentored me and brought me along. I owe him a great deal,” he said.

Conway said he still respects and honors his barbershop.

“It brought me a long ways. We brought each other a long ways and made many friends,” he said.

JOLIET – The Salvation Army still is looking to open a store in Joliet – but not at the Century Tile and Carpet building it once was going to occupy, an official with the organization said.

The former Century Tile store at 1395 Larkin Ave. has been vacant for months.

At one time, there was a plan for The Salvation Army to move in after Century Tile moved out. The city in June approved the special use permit needed by The Salvation Army to open a resale shop at the location.

Century Tile in August began a close-out sale and later left the building. But The Salvation Army has never moved in.

“We could not unfortunately reach an agreement with the property owner,” said Capt. Jason Schaal with The Salvation Army. “However, we are still very interested in opening a

Braidwood Police Chief Nick Ficarello said police received an anonymous tip early last week about suspicious activity at a residence in the 400 block of West Second Street and began an investigation.

“We obtained a search warrant and went in at 7 p.m. Friday with assistance from state police and Wilmington police, and officers located the remnants of a lab used to manufacture crystal meth,” Ficarello said.

Police found 768 grams of methamphetamine, which Ficarello said is the most ever recovered in Braidwood. He estimates the meth would have a street value of about $9,000.

Stanley Cochran, 47, was arrested on a charge of manufacturing narcotics. Another resident, Chad M. Ferguson, 38, was arrested on a charge of marijuana possession and also has an outstanding warrant

A broker for the Century Tile property had a different version of what happened with The Salvation Army deal.

“The Salvation Army had some change in leadership close to the end of the process,” said John Coleman, executive vice president for Transwestern. “We saw the new leadership didn’t have the same vision for the site as the old leadership.”

The building originally opened as a store for Frank’s Nursery & Crafts, a lawn and garden chain that went out of business.

The 24,000-square-foot building has a large parking lot that Coleman said would make it valuable to a retailer that needs ample parking. He said the property is being marketed to retailers, including national companies, that might be looking for a prime location in Joliet.

Joliet teacher charged with sexually assaulting student

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Dirksen Junior High School teacher was arrested last week after authorities said he within the past month raped a 12-year-old student.

Kyle R. Camp, 36, had sexual contact with the girl within the last month, Joliet Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said. On Friday afternoon, the school liaison officer at Joliet West High School was approached by the older sister of a friend of the victim and asked detectives to investi-

gate, Roechner said.

“When officers arrived at the school they learned Camp had already been removed by administration earlier that day and escorted from the grounds,” Ro- Kyle J. Camp echner said.

Police spoke with the victim and later located Camp at his home in the 700 block of Maplewood Drive in Minooka. Camp was arrested on one count of predatory criminal sexual assault and is being held in the Grundy County Jail.

Roechner said Camp taught social studies and was a basketball and soccer coach at Dirksen, 203 S. Midland Ave. in Joliet.

“This is still an open investigation and other charges may be pending,” Roechner said Monday.

Joliet Public Schools District 86 spokeswoman Sandy Zalewski said Camp has been placed on paid administrative leave. District officials first heard of the complaint Friday afternoon, she said.

“As soon as we heard a complaint, we immediately asked [Camp] to leave,” Zalewski said.

Zalewski said the district is “fully cooperating” with the Joliet Police Department.

“The safety of students and staff is our No. 1 priority,” she said.

The district stated in a post on its Facebook page Monday that students returning from the three-day weekend Tuesday will have access to counselors and social workers. The post also said that students and parents who may have information related to the investigation should contact Joliet police directly, while those with other concerns should contact the Dirksen principal’s office.

Gunshots in Coal City result in arrest of 2 men Saturday

mmallory@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Two men were arrested Saturday in Coal City after police say their fired several rounds of ammunition into the ground.

Coal City police were dispatched about noon to the 400 block of South Marguerite Street after a resident reported gunshots at a nearby home. Police entered the residence of Edward

L. Smith, 53, without incident and inquired about the noise.

According to the arrest report, Smith and Jose J. Lopez, 30, of Wilmington said they were unaware of any shots being fired, but Smith said he “heard a couple loud noises coming from the area of his neighbor’s residence.”

Authorities found Smith’s FOID card was revoked in 1987 and expired in 1993 and that Smith admitted he did

not have a FOID card. Smith said the guns in the house belonged to his wife, who has an active FOID card. Lopez has never had a FOID card.

The report stated officers then saw ground in the backyard altered in five different places and found a metal projectile. Officers then went back into the home and requested information on the evidence found, at which point Lopez admitted to firing four shots and Smith admitted to firing one, ac-

cording to the report. A 9 mm gun was taken into evidence.

Lopez was charged with possession of a firearm without a FOID card, possession of firearm ammunition without a FOID card and reckless discharge of a firearm. If you want to give your nether regions a break from the razor but still want a smooth look, consider getting a Brazilian wax.

“If hair is any longer it is more painful when pulling the wax,” Malinowski said.

“The client comes in and we do a

cleanse and then powder and then strip wax is put on the outer area and Lycon Berry Hard wax on the inner area,” Malinowski said.

Because a zinc oxide wax is used for the strip wax, there is less irritation. The hard wax works great for lifting the hair in the inner region, Malinowski said.

After the procedure clients may experience some sensitivity for about a day.

“We hold the skin taut but there are times where clients may get a little bruising. Other than that they can enjoy not having to worry about shaving that area for three to six weeks,” Malinowski said.

MINOOKA – As young girls, Holly McNichols and her sister Susan Keenan grew up Irish dancing. One tradition they loved was the Ceili parties before the dance competitions.

The sisters now own Keigher Academy of Irish Dance in Minooka and have brought the Ceili party tradition for their dance students and the community.

“I thought it would be neat to bring this tradition back to my school, and community,” McNichols said. “Plus, the kids get so wrapped up in competitions, but we want to show them that there is so much more to Irish dance than that.”

More than 100 people walked Friday night through the doors of the village of Minooka Community Room into a space filled with Irish music via accordion, balloons, food, fellowship and, of course, dance.

“I am so glad to see people I don’t recognize from the school. We wanted people from the community to come and enjoy themselves as well,” Keenan said.

When the time came to perform the Ceili dance, which is similar to a square dance, she had each person pair with a friend, and then placed two pairs togeth-

partners and I liked learning something new,” said Makena Wons, 7, of Plainfield.

Makena’s mom Jessica Wons heard of the event by word of mouth and decided to attend.

“My daughter does other dance classes, but has always been interested in Irish dance. She watches YouTube videos at home. So, when we heard about the open house, we wanted to check it out,” Jessica said.

After the Ceili dance, older dancers from the school performed the traditional dances the students learn in class. The crowd watched and cheered, and the smaller girls watched in awe.

“My daughter, who is 7, takes dance at Keigher, but they don’t get to see the older kids dance very often, so she enjoys that as well as being with her friends and family,” said Katie Oster of Plainfield.

The evening wrapped up with one more round of Ceili dance. The dancers were more comfortable the second round and the room filled with laughter, spins and shuffles.

Keigher takes boys and girls ages 4 and older, beginners to champions.

Illinois’ budget crunch comes at a time when hospitals in Illinois are charged with reducing re-admissions, integrating physical and behavioral health care and improving overall quality of care, he said.

“In communities like Joliet, we know community-based services have been really decimated in terms of some budget cuts. So when folks don’t have community-based services, they turn to their emergency departments,” Wilhelmi said.

Silver Cross Hospital spokeswoman Tracy AJ Wilhelmi Simons said the New Lenox hospital is owed more than $1 million from the state. The hospital has experienced a 3.8 percent increase in ER patients in 2016, compared to the same time last year. More than 40 percent of patients seen are uninsured or on public aid, Simons said.

A court ruled last year that health care providers serving Medicaid patients must be paid despite the absence of a state budget, so those dollars are flowing to hospitals, albeit delayed. But Illinois has yet to pay out claims or premiums for workers and retirees covered under the state group insurance program, Wilhelmi said.

Health care providers continue to give services with the expectation that those payments will eventually come through once a budget deal is reached. But now Illinois is nine months into an unprecedented budget

impasse, he said.

“We provide those services, and if we don’t get paid adequately and timely, that creates a real pressure,” Wilhelmi said.

Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet is owed $3.5 million in claims made by retirees or workers under the state group insurance program, according to the hospital.

About $2.9 million is delayed by 121 days. The Joliet hospital also is backlogged more than $6 million in Medicaid payments during that same time period.

Will County’s three hospitals – Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, Silver Cross Hospital and Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital – combined represent $1.9 billion in annual economic impact and employ about 4,000 workers, Wilhelmi said. Illinois hospitals generate an annual economic impact of nearly $89 billion.

State spending continues at the previous fiscal year’s levels, yet revenue projections are much lower due to the rollback of the state income tax, Wilhelmi said.

“We have a situation now where we need to find a solution to make sure that there is an adequate amount of resources to support the spending that’s so important to the people of the state,” Wilhelmi said. “When you look at what’s important to the people of the state, it’s health care.”

New Lenox man stole $500,000 from Panamanian investor

A New Lenox man was sentenced last week to 25 months in prison for wire fraud after cheating a Panamanian investor out of $500,000, according to a U.S. Attorney’s Office news release.

Thomas A. Kopec, 48, pleaded guilty Dec. 11. He was sentenced Friday.

According to court documents, Kopec admitted to soliciting $500,000 from the victim for a purported investment vehicle for purchasing securities and acquiring a bank, the news release stated. Kopec took steps to pursue the investment to lull the victim into thinking it was proceeding as planned.

Kopec misappropriated the money and spent it on personal and other expenses at retailers including Best Buy, Wal-Mart and Apple, according to the news release. He started the scheme in Illinois, but relocated it to Virginia.

In addition to the 25 months in prison, Kopec also was ordered to serve three years of supervised release and pay $500,000 in restitution.

McGuire said if MAP grant funding were released it would go to private and public schools. The lack of funding for the grants has been an

issue for Lewis University and University of St. Francis, as well as JJC, he said.

Several students at the JJC FAFSA workshop last week said financial aid helps them attend school and eases the burden from other obligations, such as car payments and textbooks.

“School would be one less thing I’d have to worry about,” JJC student Neaya Allen said.

There are basically two ways to deal with allergy eyes, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology: Avoid the allergen or seek treatment.

If symptoms are caused by outdoor allergens stay inside when the pollen count is high, says AAO. Indoors keep windows closed. Use air conditioning and keep filters clean. Avoid using window fans that pull allergens indoors.

Use air conditioner while driving.

If mold triggers eye symptoms, keep your home’s humidity between 30 and 50 percent with a dehumidifier, says AAO. Dust mites breed in your bedding and mattress, so use a mattress cover and wash bed linens frequently, including pillows, using hot water.

When cleaning floors avoid using a

dust mop or broom. Use a damp mop instead.

If you’re allergic to pets keep them outside whenever possible and keep them out of your bedroom. Consider replacing carpeting with hard flooring.

Wash hands and clothing after touching a pet, and don’t rub your eyes.

Oral antihistamines may relieve itchy eyes but can dry eyes and worsen symptoms.

Antihistamine/mast-cell stabilizers are eyedrops with an antihistamine to relieve itchiness and a mast-cell stabilizer to help prevent eye allergies, says AAO. Steroid eye drops can help chronic and severe eye allergy symptoms. If all else fails immunotherapy (allergy) shots containing tiny amounts of the allergen are given in increasing doses to help increase immunity to the allergens.

SHOREWOOD – Two Minooka men are in jail while a man police said the pair beat more than a week ago remains in critical condition.

Shorewood Police Chief Aaron Klima said a verbal altercation early Feb. 28 outside Skooters Roadhouse led to the attack in the parking lot Michael of Burger King at routes R. Reid 52 and 59.

As the bar was closing about 3 a.m. two men argued with two other men – Michael R. Reid, 22, and Nicholas A. Ventsias, 26, Nicholas A. Klima said.

Ventsias “They exchanged words, there may have been some pushing, but no punches were thrown,” Klima said.

Reid works as a bouncer at Skooters, 700 W. Jefferson St., and Ventsias is either his half brother or stepbrother.

“Investigators learned Reid has experience as a mixed martial arts fighter,” Klima noted.

The two men they were arguing with got into the car of a woman they’d just met and left to avoid a confrontation, but were followed to the closed fast food restaurant, which is one block from the bar, Klima said.

“According to witness statements and video we reviewed, they were both severely beaten,” Klima said.

One of the men was beaten unconscious and remained in a medically induced coma Monday, according to police reports.

“His injuries are potentially life-threatening,” Klima said.

The other man has been released from the hospital and is expected to recover.

On Friday, Reid and Ventsias were arrested on charges of aggravated battery and mob action and booked into the Will County Jail.

Reid, of the 800 block of Daniel Drive in Minooka, is being held on $1 million bond. Ventsias, of the 1500 block of Kettleson Drive in Minooka, is being held on $750,000 bond.

Raymond “Ray” Baxter, age 69 years, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 6, 2016, with his loving wife by his side. Born in Joliet on Sept. 6, 1946, to Earl and Elizabeth (nee Furdek) Baxter.

He was a lifelong resident.

Survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Rita (nee Plyer) Baxter; two loving sons, Michael Baxter and Matthew (Jennifer Alessio) Baxter; three cherished granddaughters, known as his angels, Emma, Anna and Olivia; his sister, Carol Kluska; his sister-in-law, Rose (Tim) Kerr; his brothers-inlaw, Brian (Daniele), Keith (Kathy) and Mark (Tia) Plyer (whom he loved liked sons); nieces and nephews, Chris and Kevin Kluska, Julie Hoover, Brian, Lucia, Kristin and Kelly Plyer; also survived by many lifelong friends and his favorite granddog, Riley.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Earl; his in-laws, Frank and Ida Plyer and many aunts and uncles.

He was a 1964 graduate of Joliet Catholic High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Vietnam era. He retired from the Romeoville/Lockport Post Office with 30 years of service and from Will County with 10 years of service.

Ray loved the outdoors (fishing in Phillips, WI) and sports, especially his three favorite teams, the Chicago Cubs, the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Blackhawks. His favorite days of the week were Sundays and Tuesdays where he enjoyed playing golf followed by the “19th” hole when he and his friends discussed what went wrong with their game.

Ray loved “life” and enjoyed it to the fullest.

He loved spending time with his family and his Friday night “date nights” with his wife. He was a very active member of the Northwest Recreational Club (President) and a member of the Moran AC. Visitation will be held at the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home, 2320 Black Road,

and Allen R. Lane (Moats), “Jack” and Judy had three children, Deborah A. “Debbie”, Kathleen Y. “Kathie” and John E. Jr. “Jack” Lane.

Judy enjoyed raising a family, her poodles, travelling, yard work, numerous part-time jobs and volunteering to local organizations.

Judy volunteered at St. Joe’s Hospital for several years and also, Joliet PADS, Meals on Wheels, Joliet Area Community Hospice, Senior Services and the Rialto Square Theatre.

In addition to her parents, Judy was predeceased by her husband of 36 years, and her son, Allen. Also, her loving half brother Edward T. Meyers Jr. “Eddie,” as well as her stepfather, Edward T. Meyers Sr. “Ed.” Surviving are her daughters, Karen and her husband, Owen Parker of Hanover Park, Debbie of Joliet, Kathie and her husband, Al, Dugas of Conroe TX; and her son, John Jr. of Channahon; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Jody Meyers of Joliet; as well as several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Archibald Frederick Moeser “Archie,” age 92, of Gardner, passed away Friday, March 4, 2016, at Heritage Health in Dwight.

Born March 26, 1923, in Kenora, Ontario, Canada, to the late Frederick and Helen (nee Hammer) Moeser. Retired from J. Merl Jones. Veteran of the United States Army, having served during WWII Second Armored Division. Also served in the Joliet National Guard as a Master Sergeant with numerous medals and ribbons. Member of V.F.W. Post #2199 and American Legion Post #39.

Surviving are his daughter, Linda (Neal) Barnhart; son, Bruce (Melissa) Moeser; grandchildren, Hannah Moeser and Tim Moeser; sister, Karon (Albert) Hallam.

Born: Sept. 20, 1934; in Herod Died: March 4, 2016; in White House, TN Harold Deneen Partain, age 81, of White House, Tennessee passed away on March 4, 2016.

He was born to Joseph and Eva Cogdill Partain on Sept.

20, 1934 in Herod. He grew up in Herod and graduated from Golconda High School in Golconda, Illinois.

He married the love of his life, Joyce Ann Crader, in Joliet, on Nov. 21, 1959. During his life, he loved God, his family, the USA and life. Harold loved to laugh, do

puzzles, play games and learn.

Because of his little industry in southern Illinois, Harold went to Joliet to work at Caterpillar. After a year, he began work at Weber Dairy as a home delivery man.

Around this time, he joined the U.S. Army and was a proud paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne. After the military duty, he went back to work at Weber Dairy. He moved his way up into management. Years later, the dairy was brought by Prairie Farms Dairy and he became the manager of the distribution facility in Joliet.

Harold was a member of Temple Baptist Church in White House, Tennessee. He was ordained as a deacon in 1963 at Curtis Avenue Baptist Church in Joliet. He was a faithful Bible teacher starting at the age of 15.

He served Three Rivers Baptist Association for many years in various capacities, as well as moderator and treasurer. Harold served six years on the Board of the Illinois State Association.

After retiring, Harold and Joyce moved to White House, Tennessee to be closer to their daughter Carol and their grandchildren. They enjoyed traveling in their camper to 49 of the 50 states. If a bridge was built, they would have pulled the camper to Hawaii. Even though a past paratrooper, Harold hated to fly and made the trip to Hawaii by plane.

During winter months, they spent their time at Bibleville Conference Grounds near McAllen, Texas. While they spent their time there, Harold would do mission trips doing construction work in Mexico at an orphanage.

Harold is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joyce Ann Crader Partain; two children, Carol (Jack) Dotson of White House, Tennessee, and Jill Tackett of Marietta, Georgia; two grandchildren, Rebekah (Ryan) Ray of Lodi, California, Stephanie (Derek) Denlinger of Mount Joy, Pennsylvania; one great grandchild, Noah Ray of Lodi, California; stepgrandchildren, Jacob Dotson of Nashville, Tennessee, John (Amanda) Dotson of Gallatin, Tennessee; stepgreat-grandchild, Luke Dotson of Gallatin, Tennessee; sister-inlaw, Marian Partain of Saline, Michigan; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents; and one son, David D. Partain; brothers, Thomas, Charles, Allard and Bob Partain; sisters, Blanche Williams, Ida Owen, Lavern Wallace and Josie Hicks.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Trying to make a stand in Michigan, Sen. Bernie Sanders said Monday that Hillary Clinton was being disingenuous when she asserted that he opposed the auto bailout that rescued carmakers General Motors and Chrysler from oblivion during the economic crisis.

Sanders sought to defend his record ahead of Tuesday’s crucial Michigan primary and blunt the former secretary of state’s momentum in the Democratic presidential contest. The bailout of the U.S. auto industry by Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama remains popular in Michigan, the home of the U.S. auto industry, and has been credited with preserving the Midwest’s manufacturing base.

“Secretary Clinton went out of her way to mischaracterize my history as it relates to the 2008 auto industry bailout,” the Vermont senator said during a rally in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

“Let me be as clear as I can: There was one vote in the United States Senate on whether or not to support the auto bailout and protect jobs in Michigan and around this country. I voted for the auto bailout.”

Sanders was referring to a December 2008 vote in which Michigan’s Democratic senators, Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow, pleaded with fellow lawmakers to provide a $14 billion lifeline to GM and Chrysler, which were teetering on the brink of bankruptcy at the time.

Sanders and Clinton both voted in favor of the bill but it failed to clear the Senate, prompt-

ing Bush to announce about a week later that the federal government would step in with $17.4 billion in federal aid to help the carmakers survive and restructure. The bailout provided $13.4 billion at the end of the Bush administration with the last $4 billion contingent on the release of the second installment of the Wall Street bailout funds.

In Sunday night’s debate, Clinton declared that Sanders “was against the auto bailout. In January 2009, President-elect Obama asked everybody in the Congress to vote for the bailout. The money was there, and had to be released in order to save the American auto industry.”

She added: “I voted to save the auto industry. He voted against the money that ended up saving the auto industry. I think that is a pretty big difference.” Clinton’s campaign began airing a radio ad Monday in Michigan with a similar message.

Clinton was referring to a Jan. 15, 2009, vote in which the Senate considered a motion to block the release of the second half of the $700 billion financial rescue package. Both Bush and Obama, then the president-elect, had urged Congress to release the second $350 billion of the Troubled Asset Relief Program funds.

The effort to block the funds was led by Louisiana Sen. David Vitter, a Republican, and the measure was defeated by 45 Democrats, including Clinton, and a handful of Republicans.

Sanders, who opposed the Wall Street bailout, voted with Vitter’s side to block the money.

It’s a question I’m asked a lot these days. The inquirers always wonder how Gov. Bruce Rauner, House Speaker Michael Madigan and their more full-throated enablers on both sides can live with themselves as they watch big chunks of the state government’s responsibilities crumble before their very eyes during the monthslong governmental impasse.

As far as I can tell, they’re sleeping pretty well. And both sides appear to be using almost the exact same coping strategies.

Rauner and his crew say they’re horribly upset that Illinois doesn’t yet have a budget, but it’s all being stopped by one man, Speaker Madigan. Until Madigan and the legislators he controls decide to compromise, there’s nothing Rauner can do, they say. Simple. Move along.

Madigan and his crew have been saying for months that Rauner is operating in the extreme by demanding nonbudgetary items that go against core Democratic principles. Until Rauner changes course, they say, there’s nothing Madigan can do. Simple. Move along.

Both men also see the key to a solution in the rank-and-file membership of the other party. Rauner repeatedly insists, without offering evidence,

Primary day is March 15. Both sides are seemingly trying to demonstrate to the other that their actions can have real electoral consequences.

So, on March 16, we may know whether a truce can be called long enough to fix at least some of these problems.

But Madigan doesn’t easily forget attacks like these, nor does he cotton to outsiders meddling in his and his members’ primaries. And Rauner seems committed to win at all costs.

Plus, I’ve learned over the years always to bet on nothing when it comes to getting something done in Illinois.

It’s the historically smart play, and you’re only wrong once.

In a regional game a year ago, then-junior Joe Butler was unstoppable as he led Minooka to a 61-45 victory over Joliet West.

All Butler did was hit 11-of-12 shots, including all three 3-pointers, and grab 11 rebounds.

Both teams had most of their main components back this season, and both are among the qualifiers for this week’s Class 4A Lockport Sectional. Minooka (23-8), the No. 1 seed, gets things rolling at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Southwest Prairie Conference rival Oswego, while No. 3 West (19-9)

VIEWS Dick Goss will tangle with district and SouthWest Suburban Blue adversary Joliet Central at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Next season, all four teams will toil in the Southwest Prairie, but that’s next season. Back to the present.

If results from earlier this season are reliable predictors, Minooka and Joliet West will meet in the sectional

final Friday night. The Indians, who are coming off their first regional championship since 1977, beat Oswego twice during the season, and the Tigers knocked off Joliet Central twice.

As we have heard so often, however, it is difficult to beat a good team three times. And, Oswego and Joliet Central certainly qualify as good teams. So, it’s game on.

Having said that, I do see Minooka and West surviving the semifinals and matching up Friday. As noted previously, the Indians deserved the No. 1 sectional seed. The Tigers might

have been the No. 1 seed if not for the post-Pontiac Christmas Tournament lull they experienced.

What makes Minooka so tough under coach Scott Tanaka? First, the disciplined Indians play solid manto-man defense. They apply enough defensive pressure to keep potentially explosive offensive teams from getting into a rhythm.

Second, they exercise patience in running their offense. If it takes 40 to 50 seconds or more to get a high-quality

Cairo named GLVC Softball Player of the Week SUBMITTED REPORTS

ROMEOVILLE – The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced Monday that Lewis University sophomore outfielder Jenna Cairo has been selected as the GLVC Softball Player of the Week for the period ending March 6. Cairo is Lewis’ first Player of the Week since Lauren Hanford took home the honor on April 29, 2013.

In 12 games last week, Cairo batted .476 (20 for 42) with 13 runs scored, seven RBIs and six doubles in the leadoff spot. She hit safely in 10 out of 12 contests and had five games with at least three hits.

Her most impressive performance came in a 9-1 (five-inning) win over Gannon (March 1), as she went 3 for 4 with three runs scored and an RBI. For the season, Cairo is batting .466 (27 for 58) with a team-best 20 runs, eight doubles and .638 slugging percentage.

Third, Butler is a winner, the type of player every good team needs to lead the way.

Fourth, guard Larry Roberts is among the best 3-point shooters in the area. When the chips are down, I will take Roberts shooting the 3 for me anytime.

And fifth, the starting lineup of Roberts, Joe Butler, Jon Butler, Blake Parzych and Keegan Graebner has all the elements of a quality starting five. Tanaka also gets good minutes off the bench from Nick Clemmons, John Carnagio and Kyle Graebner.

You can make a case for Clemmons being the best sixth man in the area.

Minooka is not unbeatable, of course.

Romeoville nearly halted the Indians’ postseason run before it got rolling in the regional semifinals. And Oswego, led by guard Malique Ross and center Brice Robinson, will enter Tuesday night’s game feeling as if it has a legitimate chance to advance.

There’s something about Minooka, however, that on a given night can bring out the worst in an opponent. When the Indians are on their game, they frustrate people.

We knew we could not go wrong in the Lockport Sectional, regardless of which four from among a solid 10 teams got there.

But it is nice to see Minooka, Joliet West

with Nick Fleischauer (Minooka, Joliet Junior College), Rick Faron and John Riordan (two hits) each collecting a run batted in for USF, which finished with 10 hits. Tomas Aguilar (Plainfield Central) picked up his first win with four scoreless innings in relief. Dan Darling collected his first save.

WOMEN’S SOFTBALL

St. Francis 6, Great Falls 1/St. Francis 13, Aquinas 5: The No. 25 Fighting

Saints (6-0) won their first two games in the Tucson Invitational games in Tucson, Arizona.

In the opener, Morghan Dieringer (Lincoln-Way Central) tossed a three-hitter and allowed one unearned run. Alex Wyss (Joliet Catholic) was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and had seven putouts in the outfield while Taylor Barsz (Lockport) went 2 for 2 with two runs.

In the second game, Wyss was 3 for 5 with five RBIs, and Sara Braden went 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Jasmine Sifuentez got the win, while Dieringer picked up the save.

and Joliet Central involved. It is not a stretch to imagine any of them winning the sectional and moving on to the supersectional.

In a sectional where I have been saying all along that any one of about 10 teams can win, the No. 1 seed will be difficult to oust.

I will take the Indians to win it, and I’ll withhold the right to change my mind, in case Oswego spoils things Tuesday night.

LEWIS’ TITLE

Switching to the local college scene, how about the Lewis men’s basketball team beating Indianapolis, No. 1 seed Bellarmine and Wisconsin-Parkside back-toback-to-back to win the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament and the league’s automatic berth in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional?

Bottom line: Never count out a Scott Trost-coached team. When I covered the Flyers a couple of times during the season, Trost told me there were no secrets about what Lewis needed to do to get back on its usual track.

“We have some guys who have to play better,” he said.

With Miles Simelton – an Oswego product, by the way – and Delaney Blaylock heading the improvement chart, the Flyers played better down the stretch. I wouldn’t doubt if Max Strus and Co. made some serious noise in the regional.

JOLIET – University of St. Francis sophomore point guard Christina Ekhomu knew what she wanted when she graduated Joliet Catholic after the 201314 season.

“All I wanted is a coach who could make me the best player I can be and elevate my game,” she said.

She found that person right here at home, at the University of St. Francis.

Samantha Quigley has led the Saints to a 28-4 record, a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season championship and a berth in the NAIA Division II National Tournament at Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

USF, ranked sixth in the nation, received one of the four No. 2 seeds in the 32-team field and will debut against Ashbury (23-9) at 10:15 a.m. Thursday.

Ashbury is the No. 7 seed in the same bracket.

Ekhomu’s sister, Nicole, is one of the best female basketball players in Illinois. A senior at JCA, she will continue her career at Florida State.

Christina may not be on her younger sister’s level, but she is important to the success of any team she plays for. That was evident when she toiled for the Angels, and it has continued with the Saints. She is averaging 26.9 minutes, 5.7 points, 3.6 assists and 1.2 steals, and she sports an excellent 2.7 assist-to-turnover ratio. She also is shooting 39.0 percent from 3-point range (16 of 41) and .845 from the free-throw line (49 of 58).

The bond Ekhomu has with Quigley has helped her elevate her game.

Quigley was All-Big East and an honorable-mention All-American when she played for Doug Bruno at DePaul.

“As a point guard, Sam tells me how important it is to take leadership of a team,” Ekhomu said. “She’s been building that into me since freshman year.

“I believe she made the Sweet 16 when she played under coach Bruno.

She knows all about what we are about to experience. She knows the little things that only someone who has been on the big stage would know and understand. Everything is not going to go our way at the tournament, and we have to know how to punch back. She will instill that in us.

“It’s exciting to be going to the tournament. I can see the excitement in coach’s face.”

The Saints, featuring All-American Katie Gonnering, finished 17-15 a year ago after a 2-10 start.

“Last year was subpar,” Ekhomu said. “When we were 2-10, I remember talking to Sam and telling her, ‘I’m not

“Everyone knew Katie was graduating, and she was a great player. I heard the comments that the Saints wouldn’t be the same this season without her.”

No, they have not been the same.

They have been better.

“I remember telling Kamari (Jordan, her teammate) that this year is going to be different,” Ekhomu said. “I told her we will go to the nationals. Without Katie here, we had players who were ready to step up and take on new responsibility.”

The Saints lost to St. Ambrose in the semifinals of the CCAC Tournament,

but they already had clinched their national tournament berth. So no big deal, right? Ekhomu disagrees.

“It’s a great feeling to be where we are,” she said. “We were hurt by losing in the conference tournament, though.

We wanted to win it all, everything. We have that kind of desire. We’re real hungry.

“We’re not the type of team that settles for anything. We’re never satisfied.

From that standpoint, we’re not OK with the No. 2 seed. We wanted one of the No. 1 seeds.

“We have goals. We want to make an impact there at the tournament. We have pride in each other. Coach just told us at practice that it’s not OK just

to be there.”

What Quigley says motivates Ekhomu.

“Sam has ability to bring out a fire in you that you never knew you had,” Ekhomu said. “She has affected the entire team that way.”

Among the returning players who have stepped up in addition to Ekhomu are Jordan, Angelica Osusky, Alexis Brown and Mary Rouse. The additions of Charnelle Reed, who transferred from Bradley, and Jordan Giddings, who came in from Rock Falls, have been huge as well. Reed averages 17.6 points and 7.6 rebounds, and Giddings 10.1 points and 5.2 boards.

“We had the frustration of losing to Saint Xavier in the conference tournament last year,” Ekhomu said. “During this year, every person on the team got better. Everyone wanted to elevate their game. And to me, Charnelle and Jordan have been very big additions.

They have that same passion and desire the rest of the team has.

“God had a plan for us, giving us Charnelle and Jordan.”

Strus, Lewis men claim No. 4 regional seed SUBMITTED REPORT

ROMEOVILLE – The Lewis men’s basketball players already knew they were dancing, and now they know their first partner.

The NCAA announced late Sunday night that the Flyers have received the No. 4 seed in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional and will play No. 5 seed Saginaw Valley State in the opening round.

The Flyers earned the Great Lakes Valley Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by capturing the GLVC title Sunday with an 80-71 win over Wisconsin-Parkside. This will be Lewis’ 15th NCAA Tournament berth in school history.

The Flyers (24-8) will play Saginaw Valley State on Saturday at a time to be determined. The game will be played at No. 1 seed and regional host UW-Parkside.

The Flyers already have played Saginaw Valley State this season, with Lewis winning, 85-84, Nov. 21 at Neil Carey Arena.

Miles Simelton scored a layup with four seconds remaining to give the Flyers the win. The game featured six ties and eight lead changes.

“Saginaw is a tough opponent and obviously gave us all we could handle earlier in the year,” Lewis coach Scot Trost said.

“We look forward to the challenge, and I’m sure they will as well.”

All-GLVC first-team selection Max Strus leads the Flyers.

The sophomore enters the NCAA Tournament averaging 20.3 points and 8.5 rebounds. He was named the MVP of the GLVC Tournament.

Lewis women are seeded second in regional SUBMITTED REPORT ROMEOVILLE – For the 11th time in program history and the fourth year in a row, the Lewis women’s basketball team has qualified for the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional.

The No. 4-ranked Flyers (28-2) learned late Sunday night they have earned the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Midwest Regional. Lewis will play No. 7 seed Grand Valley State in the opening round at 1:30 p.m. Friday. No. 1 seed Ashland will serve as the host.

Grand Valley State handed Lewis one of its two losses on the season, defeating the Flyers, 71-63, Nov. 25.

Combined with Lewis’ berth in 2011, this is the fifth bid in six years for the Flyers. The Flyers made it each year from 2005 to 2007, meaning Lewis has qualified for the NCAA Tournament in eight of the last 12 years.

Lewis’ fourth bid in a row means this year’s senior class is the first in program history to qualify for the NCAA Tournament each year.

The Flyers won the Midwest Regional last season for the program’s first Elite Eight berth.

“Every team wants to defend their title,” Lewis coach Kristen Gillespie said. “This group has earned that right thanks to their focus and passion this year.”

Two-time Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year Mariyah Brawner-Henley leads the Flyers. She is averaging 20.3 points and 11.5 rebounds. GLVC Freshman of the Year Jessica Kelliher is averaging 18.2 points and 6.2 rebounds.

Former NFL coach Lovie Smith hired to lead Illini

CHAMPAIGN – In a conference where Jim Harbaugh’s star power and Urban Meyer’s national-title pedigree dominate the news, Illinois has become an afterthought, and the headlines lately have been about the coaches who’ve been fired or accused of misbehavior.

Illinois hopes to put an end to all that with a big name of its own: Lovie Smith.

The Illini made a splash of the positive variety Monday by announcing the hiring of Smith, the former coach of the Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The move came two days after athletic director Josh Whitman, in his first official day on the job, fired Bill Cubit after a single season in Champaign. He turned to Smith, who took the Bears to the 2007 Super Bowl and was dismissed as coach of the Buccaneers in January.

The low-key Smith said he intends to make the Illini a power in the Big Ten, and not try to match the styles of his new rivals. He also said he hopes that, at 58, he finishes his football career at Illinois.

“It’s pretty simple,” Smith said during a news conference. “We just want to play winning football. I want to see the time come when our stadium is full, when people are excited about what we’re doing and leaving the games with a big smile on their face.”

“I’m going to do it my way and feel comfortable with that,” he said, but adding that he’ll add a Twitter account and take other steps needed to compete in a social media world. “In the end, people, they want to be able to look in you in the eye and believe what you’re saying and trust what you’re saying is exactly how

it’s going to be.”

This is the first college head coaching job for Smith and his first job in college football since leaving Ohio State in 1995.

He faces a daunting task: Illinois has had six losing seasons in the past eight years, and the program also is recovering from allegations of player abuse that led the school to fire coach Tim Beckman a week before last season started.

Smith agreed to a six-year contract worth $21 million, including $2 million a year for the first two seasons.

Whitman said hiring a coach of Smith’s stature was a statement, one he said former Illinois coach and Smith assistant Ron Turner helped set up by reaching out to Smith. Turner, now the coach at Florida International, was fired

by Smith when Smith led the Bears.

Whitman said Smith should not have a problem transitioning back to college football.

“Lovie’s going to be a great recruiter,” he said. “There’s not a living room in America that’s not going to open up their doors to Lovie Smith and his coaching staff.”

Smith is the first black head coach in football or men’s basketball at Illinois, which has been criticized by state lawmakers and others for never hiring a black coach for either program. University trustee James Montgomery, an Illinois graduate who is black, called Smith’s contract a bargain.

“It’s an amazing turnaround in the history of the university in terms of hiring an African-American coach for a major sport at the university,” Montgomery said. “It’s a great incentive for kids in our Chicago area to look at the University of Illinois from a recruiting point of view.”

It is extremely difficult to know what to make of rookie University of Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman’s firing of football coach Bill Cubit and hiring of Lovie Smith.

Although Cubit probably overachieved coaching a 5-7 record out of the mess he inherited from Tim Beckman and probably deserved to work through the first year of his two-year deal without an interim tag, he had to know when he accepted such a short offer that it came with no security and that the new AD would want his own guy.

It is appropriate to feel bad for Cubit but almost impossible to fault Whitman for removing him from the position nine months earlier than he was destined to do anyway.

Whitman erred badly in not making sure the current Illinois football players got the news either from Cubit or him before almost all of them heard it on social media, TV or radio. Hopefully, that is a rookie mistake he will learn from.

All of that is pretty cut and dried. What is not is the hiring of Smith to overhaul and oversee Illini football over the next six seasons.

Smith spent 13 years as either linebackers or defensive backs coach at six Football Bowl Subdivision schools, including a year at Wisconsin in 1987 and a year at Ohio State in 1995 before moving to the NFL. He does have some college experience and a casual acquaintance with the Big Ten. At the same time, that was 20 years or more ago, and he’s never run a college program or built a recruiting plan or base.

I’m sure Smith will figure it out, and his NFL experience will do a lot to open doors to recruits’ living rooms, and he will do fine once he makes it to the sofa.

But how many of the six years on his new contract will it take before he’s ready to recruit head-

to-head with the Ohio States, Michigans, Wisconsins and Notre Dames that will be his closest and toughest competition?

There also is this: Smith was not a popular or well-liked coach his last few years with the Bears, which is how Phil Emery got a pass on firing him after a 10-6 season.

Respected is good; well-liked is better, so it will be interesting to see just how well Smith is able to recruit.

Equally important is Smith the head coach. In 11 NFL seasons, he is 89-87 with five winning seasons, five losing seasons and one .500 campaign.

Smith is known as a good-tobrilliant defensive coach who has struggled with the other side of the ball.

How will that play coaching a college game that has skewed heavily to spread and read-option offenses in recent seasons?

Great defense always will keep a team competitive, but it is more than coincidence that the scores of the first two FBS championship games have been Ohio St. 42, Oregon 20; and Alabama 45, Clemson 40.

What kind of staff will Smith be able to put together?

In 11 seasons as a head coach, Smith’s coaching tree includes one coach who also became a head coach, Ron Rivera, whom Smith fired mainly because he was Jerry Angelo’s choice and too good at what he did.

With most of the best coaches already employed as spring practices kick off, it’s a safe bet Smith’s 2017 staff will be fairly different from the one he puts together this year.

In the most important category, Smith scores highly, as the majority of his Bears players swore by him over the years – and that bodes well for the university and its athletes.

But will Smith ever contend for Big Ten titles? And if so, how long will it take? There are an awful lot of questions to answer before anyone can predict that.

Butler sits with knee soreness while Bulls beat Bucks, 100-90 The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Pau Gasol had 12 points, 17 rebounds, 13 assists and five blocked shots, and the banged-up Bulls beat the Milwaukee Bucks, 100-90, Monday night with All-Star Jimmy Butler sidelined by swelling in his left knee.

The Bulls had six players score in double figures in their second straight win after a four-game slide. Derrick Rose scored 22 points, Mike Dunleavy had 18 and E’Twaun Moore finished with 16 points and seven assists.

Butler missed 11 games before he returned for the Bulls’ 108-100 victory over Houston on Saturday night. But he had some stiffness in his back on Sunday and then developed some swelling in his knee on Monday, prompting the Bulls to hold him out for their matchup with Milwaukee.

Reserve guard Aaron Brooks then left in the first half with right patellar tendinitis, and forward Bobby Portis was poked in the left eye late in the third period.

Peyton Manning jokes, chokes up during retirement remarks

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – Peyton Manning got through the weekend thanks to hundreds of texts and calls from men he played against or alongside over his unparalleled 18-year NFL career.

He had to crack a few jokes to help fight back the tears at his retirement news conference Monday, when the words didn’t always come as easy as the emotions.

His voice cracking, especially when he mentioned his hero, Johnny Unitas, Manning said goodbye to the game he loved in an auditorium packed with friends, family and laughter.

Manning, who turns 40 this month, said the timing was simply right to call one last audible one month after winning his second Super Bowl trophy.

“I thought about it a lot, prayed about it a lot ... it was just the right time,” Manning said. “I don’t throw as good as I used to, don’t run as good as I used to, but I have always had good timing.”

Manning came to Denver on March 20, 2012, for the chance to win another title in the twilight of his career. General manager John Elway had the blueprints.

Four years later, he hobbles away a champion, just like his boss did 17 years ago.

Manning is going golfing later this week with brothers Cooper and Eli — whose trip to Denver Monday morning was scuttled by a stomach bug.

TEMPE, Ariz. – Mike Trout had his first homer and first stolen base of the spring in the White Sox’s 9-4 victory over a Los Angeles Angels split squad on Monday.

Jose Abreu had three hits for the Sox. Dioner Navarro had two hits and two RBIs, and Steve Lombardozzi hit a tworun homer in the seventh.

Trout connected in the third inning against Sox starter Erik Johnson, turning the first pitch into a line drive over the center field wall. Trout swung at the lowest percentage of first pitches in the AL last year, but is planning to add aggression to his formidable talents.

Johnson gave up four runs on three hits in three innings. His line was spoiled some when left fielder Jerry Sands misplayed a two-run double by Kole Calhoun, but otherwise looked sharp in his competition to earn the fifth spot in the White Sox rotation.

Hosmer hits 2-run double, KC beats Cubs in split-squad game

MESA, Ariz. – Eric Hosmer hit a tworun double to help the Kansas City Royals beat the Cubs, 3-2, in a game between split squads Monday.

Hosmer’s double in the sixth inning was followed by an RBI single by Salvador Perez.

“As a hitter you feel better and better each day and you feel better in the box,” Hosmer said. “The first couple of days are a little tough just getting timing down. The body feels good and everything feels good at the plate.”

Heyward, who left St. Louis in December for a $184 million, eight-year deal with the rival Cubs, pulled Jon Gray’s 96 mph fastball onto the grassy hill over the right-field wall in the first inning. He had been 0 for 4 in two games.

Toddler with neuroblastoma needs 2 stem cell transplants If you go

Shaw Media Correspondent NEW LENOX – Neuroblastoma is, perhaps, one of the cruelest of the cancers. It strikes babies and young children.

It’s rarely seen in anyone older than 10. It’s not common even in babies, affecting about 700 children a year in this country, according to the American Cancer Society.

One of those children is 2-year-old Jase Snevely of Thornton.

Jase was diagnosed in October with stage 4, high-risk neuroblastoma with metastases to his skull and bones. He was only 20 months old.

Since then, Jase has endured five rounds of chemotherapy, surgery, 13 blood transfusions, a three-week coma on a ventilator, three lung collapses, fungal lung infections, an infected central line in his chest and treatment with methadone for withdrawals from his pain medication.

“It’s nonstop,” said Jamie Snevely, Jase’s mother and a paramedic and firefighter. “It’s 24/7, ’round the clock.”

As of Friday, Jase had spent 77 days of his life in the hospital. In the coming months, he will need two stem cell transplants. Each will cost an estimated $50,000. A fundraiser is set for Saturday in New Lenox. Jase’s father, Mike Snevely, currently in EMT school, graduated from Lincoln-Way Central High School.

Jase’s grandmother, Maureen Carrigan of New Lenox, said Jase is so accustomed to the hospital that he holds out his arm when a nurse comes into the room with a blood pressure cuff.

“He has endured so much, it’s unbelievable,” Carrigan said. “He just keeps a smile on his face. He just wants to be a little boy. He comes out of surgery and reaches for his toys.”

Neuroblastoma cancer derives from embryonic or fetal nerve cells in the part of the nervous system called the autonomic nervous system.

According to the American Cancer Society, those nerve cells run along the side of the spinal cord, cluster in ganglia in the abdomen and are in the adrenal glands.

Scientists don’t know what causes neuroblastomas. They don’t appear to have environmental causes, and only rarely is the condition genetic.

In some cases, neuroblastomas disappear on their own or develop into noncancerous tumors. Sometimes, when symptoms aren’t present and tumors are found incidentally, no treatment is needed.

About that time, the Snevelys faced a crisis – the three-month premature delivery of their daughter, Jaelynn.

Jaelynn was diagnosed with a hole in her heart, a brain bleed and other problems, and was in a Chicago hospital 66 days. Finally, Jaelynn came home, and the family was able to relax a little.

“There was like a week when things were OK,” Jamie Snevely said.

“And then Jase got pneumonia.”

That was October 2015. During that time, Jase had an abdominal ultrasound, and the neuroblastoma was discovered. Jamie Snevely said the tone in the room went from light banter to four health professionals coming to talk to her.

Before the sun set that day, Jase was at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago.

“It was consuming over 70 percent of his abdomen,” Jamie Snevely said of the neuroblastoma. “It had already

“There will be a four-to-eightweek stay in the hospital for [each] transplant,” Jamie Snevely said. “I’ve heard it’s tortuous. ... I have a feeling everything before this has been a cake walk.”

The good news is, according to the American Cancer Society, many children with neuroblastoma have a strong chance of long-term survival following treatment.

HEALTH BRIEFS Dr. Ali treating compression spine fractures in area offices

Rezin Orthopedics spine surgeon Dr. Mir Ali is now performing minimally invasive procedures in the office to treat compression fractures of the spine.

A compression fracture occurs when the vertebrae breaks and collapses.

Compression fractures are diagnosed with an X-ray or MRI. Many compression fractures are caused by osteoporosis, a disease that weakens bones, or trauma to the spine. Compression fractures can be very painful and can affect multiple vertebra.

Performing a procedure called a kyphoplasty can help fractures heal and alleviate pain. A kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that elevates fractured vertebrae to the correct position.

During the procedure, an orthopedic balloon is inserted into the vertebrae using X-ray guidance. The balloon then is inflated to raise the collapsed vertebrae. Once that occurs, the balloon is removed, and special cement is used to fill the space.

Kyphoplasties often are scheduled as an outpatient procedure in a hospital or surgical center. Ali safely performs these procedures in the office.

JOLIET – Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet celebrated the extra day of the year Feb. 29 by “leaping” into fitness on its second annual “Keep Stairing … We Don’t Mind” stair-climbing event.

More than 130 associates – including physicians, nurses, support staff and volunteers – took the challenge by climbing nine flights of stairs for their chance to win prizes, including a Fitbit.

The initiative is a part of PSJMC’s ongoing efforts to promote health and fitness by encouraging associates to take the stairs whenever possible.

More than 100 signs with motivational quotes, health facts and stair counters are posted in the stairwells at PSJMC. The Keep Stair-ing campaign was implemented in 2015 by PSJMC’s Employee Health Department and the Employer of Choice Team.

Signs that read “Free Gym” were placed on doors around the medical center leading into stairwells as an additional reminder to associates and visitors that they don’t have to look too hard for ways to stay healthy.

• Consider other NSAID alternatives.

Non-acetylated salicylates are cousins to aspirin. They include salsalate (Disalcid) and choline magnesium trisalicylate (Trilisate). The bleeding risk is lower because they don’t affect platelets. And they cause less stomach irritation than other NSAIDs. • Use the safest NSAID. Some NSAIDs may be less risky than others. The prescription NSAID diclofenac appears to have the highest risk for a second heart attack. Some studies suggest naproxen has the lowest risk.

• Take your aspirin first. Not only does the aspirin you’re taking reduce your risk of a clot forming in the stent, it also reduces your risk of a clot forming elsewhere in the arteries of your heart and brain.

That reduces your risk of heart attack and stroke. Some studies indicate NSAIDs may interfere with aspirin’s protective effect.

So if you have heart disease and must use an NSAID, take the aspirin first. Wait an hour. Then take your required dose of the NSAID drug.

• Use only what you need. Take the lowest effective dose of an NSAID for the shortest period of time to relieve your pain.

Dear Dr. K: I had angioplasty with a stent recently. I need to take aspirin and Plavix every day. I used to take ibuprofen for pain, but a neighbor said I shouldn’t take it if I’m on aspirin and Plavix. Is that right?

Dear Reader: Taking aspirin and Plavix after angioplasty and stent placement is standard care. Both aspirin and clopidogrel (Plavix) attach to blood cells called platelets to make them less sticky. You need these drugs to prevent the formation of a blood clot inside the stent. If a clot forms in the stent, it suddenly can cut off the blood supply and cause a major heart attack.

Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

Other NSAIDs include naproxen (Naprosyn, Aleve), celecoxib (Celebrex) and diclofenac (Voltaren). Like aspirin, the NSAID drugs both relieve pain and tend to make blood clot less easily.

As a result, the chance of having a serious internal bleed or bleed into the brain is higher when an NSAID is taken in addition to one or more anti-platelet drugs. NSAIDs other than aspirin also increase the chance of a heart attack and stroke in people with heart disease. That risk is unrelated to whether or not you take an anti-platelet agent.

So your neighbor is right that you need to discuss with your doctor whether to continue the ibuprofen. This is how I suggest you think about pain relief: • Start with a non-drug approach. Try a heating pad, ice or physical therapy, if appropriate. Even if these approaches do not completely relieve your pain, they might allow you to take a lower dose of a painkiller.

• Try acetaminophen. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) may be an effective alternative

When an opponent opens the bidding, and you have at least five cards in two suits, it would be great to tell partner about both of them immediately. This is usually possible with either a Michaels Cue-Bid or the Unusual No-Trump.

The inventor of the Michaels Cue-Bid had unimaginative parents, because his name was Michael Michaels. But he had an imaginative idea. If an opponent opens one of a minor, an immediate overcall of two of the same minor shows at least 5-5 in the majors. If the opening bid is in a major, two of that major indicates at least five cards in both the other major and either minor.

In this deal, North shows both majors, with something like 10-plus points. You find the right fit first, then hope to judge the level correctly.

What should South bid over two clubs?

His decision is based on fit and hand strength. Here, the fit is decent, because nine trumps are much better than eight, and two aces are wonderful. South must jump to at least three spades (and four spades isn’t crazy).

To bid only two spades, which might be on a 2-1-5-5 hand, for example, is not nearly enough.

Here, North would control-bid four clubs (to show slam interest with a first-round club control), South would control-bid four diamonds, North would use Roman Key Card Blackwood (for choice), and sign off in six spades when he learns that the spade queen is missing.

South wins the diamond lead, cashes two top trumps (unlucky), then plays on hearts to discard his diamond loser.
