Princeton, Illinois, has long been considered a charming, historic town. With its brick streets, fine architecture and stately trees, the setting is idyllic. Situated on the rolling prairie land of north central Illinois, Princeton began as a transplanted New England community.

The early settlement of Princeton began in the 1830s when families from New England traveled west in search of new land.

In March 1831, the Hampshire Colony Church was organized at a meeting in Northampton, County of Hampshire, Massachusetts.

By May, the colony left for Illinois and settled in Bureau County. They named the town Greenfield, but it was soon renamed Princeton.

Four years after their arrival, the settlers built a wood-framed church on the Court House Square.

Later, a new church was built on South Church Street.

In 1838, Owen Lovejoy came to Princeton, then a village of about 200 people, and assumed the ministry of the Hampshire Colony Congregational Church for the salary of $600 a year. He held that position for 17 years, preaching his views against slavery.

By 1905, the old church was demolished, and construction began on a new stone church, which still stands today.

Lovejoy was an abolitionist who preached his views from the pulpit and harbored runaway slaves in his home.

Unlike most Underground Railroad conductors who operated in secret, Lovejoy openly proclaimed his willingness to assist fugitive slaves.

While living in Princeton, Lovejoy resided with Butler Denham and his family. When Mr. Denham died, Lovejoy then married Butler’s widow.

tion movement and the Underground Railroad, a founder of the Illinois and national Republican Party, and a congressional leader.

The Lovejoy home became one of the most important stations on the Underground Railroad in Illinois.

Entertainment tent changes location

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com MANHATTAN – The crowd at the Manhattan Irish Fest entertainment was the biggest Peter Hegarty could recall since the event began.

Hegarty, chairman of Manhattan Irish Fest, was inside the giant white tent at its new location at the parking lot at South Wabash Street, near the Manhattan Firehouse, 195 S. State St. The tent opened Saturday after the festival parade celebrating the village’s Irish roots and culture and quickly attracted a long line.

Unlike the previous locations for the tent, visitors wouldn’t encounter mud, gravel or get their shoes wet, Hagerty said.

“This dry pavement is awesome,” he said.

The location of the entertainment tent was new feature of the 22nd annual Manhattan Irish Fest.

The two-day festival – starting Friday and ending Saturday – boasted a wide range of events and activities, notably the 5K race and downtown parade.

Crowds of people, many of them dressed in green outfits, packed the downtown area to watch Saturday’s 5K race and parade.

The parade featured a performance from the Bagpipes and Drums of the Emerald Society Chicago Police Department.

“I’m looking forward to the bagpipes,” said Cathy Block, who was one of many standing on South State Street as the parade passed through.

Block said she’s attended the festival off and on since its second year.

She said she recalled what is now the Manhattan-Elwood Public Library used to have a book reading event for children during the festival.

While the Manhattan Irish Fest entertains, it also gives back.

According to the festival’s website, more than $160,000 was donated to local organizations in more than 20 years.

The Irish American Society of County Will, the Manhattan Park District and its foundation, the Manhattan Lions Club and Operation Care Package are some of the organizations that have benefited from the festival.

The Manhattan Township Historical Society also opened its doors to

visitors to teach them about the origins of Irish families in Manhattan and Irish culture.

Their displays showed a chart of Irish family landownership in Manhattan Township, Irish garda – or police – jacket and cap and information about the earliest European settlers of the village.

According to one of the historical society’s displays, in the mid-1840s,

the Irish came to the Manhattan area after working on the Illinois and Michigan Canal project.

Mary Kay Cooper, the historical society’s secretary, noted visitors came to the displays Saturday from the area but also from other states.

She said the Manhattan Irish Fest supports many local organizations.

“You get to see your friends and families,” she said.

3 candidates seek 11th District GOP nomination

A physicist, a doctor and a DuPage County board member have something in common: They are candidates in the Republican primary for the 11th Congressional District.

The circuitous 11th District winds between Joliet to Aurora, taking in most of Bolingbrook and parts of Plainfield, Shorewood and other towns.

The winner of the Republican primary March 15 will face incumbent U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, who runs unopposed in the Democratic primary.

Herman White

Herman White is a physicist who has worked at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia for 42 years.

Should he win, the 11th Congressional District would have the distinction of putting two physicists on the ballot for the general election in November.

Foster also is a physicist who formerly worked at Fermilab.

“I had one of my friends call me from Washington to tell me, ‘We’re biting at the bit to say we have two high-energy particle physicists running for Congress in the United States,’ ” White said.

“I said, ‘I hope that’s the case.’ ” Having a scientist in Congress is an asset, White said, given the technical complexities involved in such issues as the Iranian nuclear deal. But he considers his community service more important in his prospective role as a congressman.

a serious discussion of how to balance spending with expenses.

White supports changes and even repeal of the Affordable Care Act, but said repeal should only come after the government has something else in its place. He supports the prohibition of pre-existing condition exclusions in insurance policies.

“We have to understand that we have something in place at the same time we repeal it, so we don’t have people who one minute have health care and the next minute do not have health care,” White said.

In Will County, he believes the top concern is jobs. White said Washington needs to free up the economy to promote innovation and job creation.

and Fire Commission in the village of Naperville, where he lives, and of the board of directors of Edward Hospital.

He is on the board of trustees at North Central College in Naperville, and he is the vice chair of the board for the Teachers Academy for Math and Science in Chicago.

White believes his experience gives him practical insight on health care, education, student debt and public safety issues.

“I am the most in touch with the citizens of the 11th District,” he said. “I think our current representatives [in Congress] have forgotten what the term ‘representation’ means. I am out every single day talking with people who live in the district.”

Stella said the most important issue facing the country is the economy.

He favors simplifying the tax code, replacing the current income tax systems with a flat tax, fair tax on consumption, or a combination of both. He said government needs to change policies to boost the economy.

“One way you can do this is take the handcuffs off the small business sector,” he said. “We all know that they’re the drivers of the economy.”

In Illinois, he said, representatives

from Congress should work with state legislators to improve the economy.

Jobs are leaving the state, he said, because of high taxes and high costs for workers compensation insurance.

“One of the big issues in Will County is we need to get manufacturing back,” he said. “Caterpillar is pulling out.

There are a lot of good manufacturing jobs in the 11th District that have gone away.”

Stella supports repeal of the Affordable Care Act. “The changes that are going on in medicine are not changes for the good,” he said. “The Affordable Care Act has forced millions of people into Medicaid.”

Stella believes an issue on which he can make a difference in Congress is the nation’s heroin epidemic. Doctors in the 11th District have been seen the problem for years, he said, and the best way to address it is to cut off the supply.

“The heroin is coming in from outside the country,” Stella said. “We need to secure the borders.”

Tonia Khouri

Tonia Khouri’s campaign manager told The Herald-News she would not be available for an interview. The Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times said in their editorial endorsements for the 11th District that Khouri was not available for interviews with those publications either. Neither publication endorsed her.

Khouri is an Aurora resident and a member of the DuPage County Board.

She has strong Republican Party backing. Her website lists dozens of endorsements from elected officials. It does not offer her positions on any issues.

Tom Cross and others endorse Plainfield library referendum

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Former 97th District state Rep. Tom Cross is one of several public figures to endorse the Plainfield library referendum.

Cross, an Oswego Republican who for 22 years represented Plainfield in the Illinois House of Representatives, was also a House Republican leader.

“I’ve seen and supported a lot of growth in the Plainfield Public Library District,” Cross said in a statement of support for the library’s two referendum questions on the March 15 ballot. “I’ve watched the district grow. ... The one area that has only grown in demand and need while staying static in facilities and resources

is the library.”

In his statement, Cross encouraged residents to vote “yes” to the referendum questions for library expansion, saying children and adults will Tom Cross learn more. He also said property values are shown to increase in regions with good public libraries.

On Friday, Cross said he was asked recently what he thought about the referendum, which, if passed, would build a new, larger library in place of the current building.

“The [library] administration has always been conscientious about cost,” Cross said. “I rarely ever en-

dorsed something like this. But I’ve watched them, and I see they’re very efficient. I have a high regard for the library board and executive director.”

Other endorsements

Other Plainfield officials have asked residents to vote in favor of library expansion.

According to Plainfield School District 202 Superintendent Lane Abrell, “This referendum is important to maintaining and enhancing the quality of programs offered by the library for District 202 students.”

Abrell and Plainfield Central High School Principal Robert Smith endorsed the expansion.

Plainfield Trustee Jim Racich,

who has spoken in favor of the expansion in the past, officially endorsed the referendum Tuesday.

“Denying this referendum on March 15, 2016, will send a strong message to everyone wanting to invest in our community – a message that Plainfield is grounded in stagnation and mediocrity,” Racich said in a statement.

Other current and former prominent Plainfield officials and residents supporting the library include former Will County Board Member Reed Bible, and Plainfield park district commissioners Larry Newton, Mimi Poling, Rob Ayres and Heather Kazmark.

Kazmark is a co-organizer for Citizens for a 21st Century Library, the pro-expansion political action committee.

Northern Will Co. SRA buys old police station

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – The Northern Will County Special Recreation Association is buying its facility at the old police station from the village of Romeoville.

The NWCSRA has used the building at 10 Montrose Drive for more than five years.

The Romeoville Village Board approved last week a real estate contract selling the property to the organization for $725,000.

“Three years ago, we approached

them to ask if they are interested in selling,” NWCSRA Executive Director Cathy Davis said.

“It recently came up in conversation, and the village approached us with a price. Our board discussed it and agreed we couldn’t have gotten a better deal and a greater village to work with.”

The NWCSRA, which last year changed its name from Tri-County Special Recreation Association, has been providing recreational programs and events for individuals with special needs and abilities since 1976.

It serves individuals ranging from toddlers to seniors.

Examples of programs include Special Olympic sports, fitness, adaptive sports, dances, cultural arts and camps.

The NWCSRA has four major partners: Romeoville, Lockport Township Park District, Justice Park District and Brookeridge Park District.

The NWCSRA changed its name last year after it parted ways with the Lemont Park District.

The NWCSRA at one time operated out of the Romeoville library.

But when the White Oak Library

District expanded, the organization needed to find a new home.

At the same time, Romeoville was working on a new village hall.

So the NWCSRA leased the old police station, which provides more than 10,000 square feet.

“We have a rich history of making sure we support special recreation activities,” Mayor John Noak said.

“It’s vitally important we remain committed to that part of our population and make sure we’re helping provide those services for individuals and their families.”

Moody’s upgrades Romeoville’s GO bond rating to Aa2

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Moody’s Investors Service upgraded the village of Romeoville’s general obligation bond rating from Aa3 to Aa2, the ratings agency announced Friday.

The rating change is reflected on the village’s 2016 general obligation refunding bonds of $13.5 million, according to the announcement. After the sale, the village will have $89.7 million in general obligation debt outstanding.

“During this challenging economy, it is rewarding to see that our financial

outlook remains strong, which resulted in our upgraded rating,” Mayor John Noak said in a village news release.

According to the news release, the rating change is happening along with refinancing of the village’s 2007 B bonds, which is expected to save the village approximately $500,000 during the next

five years.

The upgrade is a result of the village’s healthy operating trend, conservative budgeting, healthy reserve funds, large tax base, financial flexibility through home rule and less of a debt burden, according to the announcement from Moody’s.

In a time when police officers and their departments are under close scrutiny, Minooka Police Department Chief Justin Meyer is proud that his officers have not had a single reported misconduct report for three years running.

Meyer believes that good officers start with the department’s mission and adapting to the needs of the community.

But it also takes officers who are committed to being professional, he said.

One of those officers is Brent Herzog, who recently was named Minooka’s officer of the year.

This is Herzog’s 21st year with the Minooka Police Department.

He has served as a patrolman, Minooka High School’s resource officer for two years and is currently a field training officer.

Prior to coming to Minooka, he was a sheriff’s deputy in south central Illinois.

As a field training officer he is assigned to new hires for their first month, teaching them everything they need to know about police work in Minooka.

Through the years, Emma’s beautiful spirit grew. She was one of the first women hired at Caterpillar Tractor in 1966 – despite no previous factory experience – and she worked there for more than 30 years, Weems said.

During that time, Emma also raised her children, including one – Derrick “Donnie” McCullum – who had autism.

The other children are LaJean Grossett of Bolingbrook, Weems McCullum Jr. of Joliet and her stepson Thomas Bridges of Mississippi.

Emma also looked after her family in Mississippi. She sent them clothes and paid the taxes on their homes, Edna said.

“She was a servant, humble, always in the background helping out, never up front,” Edna said.

Emma never left the house without being impeccably groomed, even though she rarely spent money on herself, Edna said. Emma never learned to drive, but she did take her only airplane ride in 2011 to see her first great-granddaughter, Avaylyn Martin, in Georgia.

Most importantly, Emma gave people her listening ear up until her death Jan. 19, her 83rd birthday.

“She was a wonderful person,” Weems said. “She was kind, sweet, giving and understanding. She was just a beautiful person, period.”

JOLIET – Emma McCullum of Joliet loved the cold weather. But that love came with heartache for the homeless.

“When it started getting cold, she started worrying about where people were staying,” said Emma’s husband, Weems McCullum of Joliet. “She’d say, ‘I wonder where people are staying tonight. It’s cold out there.’ ” Emma couldn’t embrace the world, but she tried. In 1983, she and Weems began working at the food pantries at two Joliet churches, Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Second Avenue Baptist church, where the couple belonged for more than 60 years.

That ministry included serving meals to people in need. But distributing food wasn’t enough for Emma. She also baked homemade banana bread and shared it with the hungry.

“Just last week, the guys were talking, ‘Lord have mercy, we get no more banana bread,’ ” Weems said.

“And I said, ‘Don’t be so fast. I’ve got one left in the freezer.’ ” Edna Brass of Joliet, Emma’s daughter, said people loved Emma’s chicken and dumplings, sweet potato pie and greens. After Emma died, loved ones asked Edna if she had her mother’s recipe for chicken and dumplings. Unfortunately, Edna does not.

“She was never one to brag about her cooking or volunteer to cook for a large group,” Edna said. “But her cooking was so much better than a lot of people who did that.”

On the home front, if Emma owned it, she probably gave it away. She even carried extra aspirin in her purse, in case someone needed it.

“She should have applied for her own 501c3,” Edna said. “People came to the door to borrow anything: a cup of sugar, a cup of milk, ground beef and diapers.”

During the times a neighbor who owned a dozen expensive cats was hospitalized, Emma fed the cats. When the neighbor died, the cats became homeless and wandered to Emma’s house for meals. Weems now cares for the remaining six cats.

“I’ll keep feeding them as long as they keep coming,” Weems said.

Weems and Emma were from Mississippi and met in childhood. Attracted by Emma’s beauty, Weems knew he would marry her, which he did on Christmas Eve 1952 – he was 21, she

Inventor of modern email dies

Raymond Tomlinson, the inventor of modern email and a technological leader, died Saturday.

Raytheon Co., his employer, confirmed his death; the details were not immediately available.

Email existed in a limited capacity before Tomlinson in that electronic messages could be shared amid multiple people within a limited framework. But until his invention in 1971 of the first network person-to-person email, there was no way to send something to a specific person at a specific address.

Tomlinson wrote and sent the first email on the ARPANET system, a computer network that was created for the U.S. government that is considered a precursor to the Internet. Tomlinson also contributed to the network’s development, among numerous other pioneering technologies in the programing world.

At the time, few people had personal computers. The popularity of personal email wouldn’t take off until years later and would ultimately become an integral part of modern life.

“It wasn’t an assignment at all, he was just fooling around; he was looking for something to do with ARPANET,” Raytheon spokeswoman Joyce Kuzman said.

The first email was sent between two machines that were side-by-side.

Tomlinson said in a company interview that the test messages were “entirely forgettable and I have, therefore, forgotten them.” But when he was satisfied that the program seemed to work, he announced it via his own invention by sending a message to co-workers explaining how to use it.

“I’m often asked ‘Did I know what I was doing?” Tomlinson said in his speech when he was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame. “The answer is: Yeah I knew exactly what I was doing.

I just had no notion whatsoever about what the ultimate impact would be.”

Tomlinson is the one who chose the “@” symbol to connect the username with the destination address and it has now become a cultural icon.

“It is a symbol that probably would have gone away if not for email,” Kuzman said.

LOS ANGELES – Nancy Reagan, the helpmate, backstage adviser and fierce protector of Ronald Reagan in his journey from actor to president – and finally during his 10-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease – has died.

She was 94.

The former first lady died Sunday at her home in the Bel-Air section of Los Angeles of congestive heart failure, assistant Allison Borio told The Associated Press.

Her best-known project as first lady was the “Just Say No” campaign to help kids and teens stay off drugs.

When she swept into the White House in 1981, the former Hollywood actress partial to designer gowns and pricey china was widely dismissed as a pre-feminist throwback, concerned only with fashion, decorating and entertaining. By the time she moved out eight years later, Mrs. Reagan was fending off accusations that she was a behind-the-scenes “dragon lady” wielding unchecked power over the Reagan administration – and doing it based on astrology to boot.

All along she maintained that her only mission was to back her “Ronnie” and strengthen his presidency.

Mrs. Reagan carried that charge through the rest of her days. She served as a full-time caretaker as Alzheimer’s melted away her husband’s memory.

After his death in June 2004 she dedicated herself to tending his legacy, especially at his presidential library in California, where he had served as governor.

She also championed Alzheimer’s patients, raising millions of dollars for research and breaking with fellow conservative Republicans to advocate for stem cell studies.

Her dignity and perseverance in these post-White House roles helped smooth over the public’s fickle perceptions of the former first lady.

The Reagans’ mutual devotion over 52 years of marriage was legendary. They were forever holding hands. She watched his political speeches with a look of such steady adoration it was dubbed “the gaze.”

He called her “Mommy,” and penned a lifetime of gushing love notes. She saved these letters, published them as a book, and found them a comfort when he could no longer remember her.

After Reagan was shot by John Hinckley just three months into his presidency, he was said to have famously wisecracked to her, “Honey,

Ten years later, as his body lay in state in the U.S. Capitol, Mrs. Reagan caressed and gently kissed the flagdraped casket.

In a statement Sunday, U.S. President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama spoke of the Reagan’s journey with Alzheimer’s disease.

“Later, in her long goodbye with President Reagan, she became a voice on behalf of millions of families going through the depleting, aching reality of Alzheimer’s, and took on a new role, as advocate, on behalf of treatments that hold the potential and the promise to improve and save lives,” the Obama’s said.

As the newly arrived first lady, Mrs. Reagan raised more than $800,000 from private donors to redo the White House family quarters and to buy a $200,000 set of china bordered in red, her signature color. She was criticized for financing these pet projects with donations

from millionaires who might seek influence with the government, and for accepting gifts and loans of dresses worth thousands of dollars from top designers. Her lavish lifestyle – in the midst of a recession and with her husband’s administration cutting spending on the needy – inspired the mocking moniker “Queen Nancy.”

Although a feud between the first lady and chief of staff Donald Regan had spilled into the open, the president dismissed reports that it was his wife who got Regan fired.

“The idea that she is involved in governmental decisions and so forth and all of this, and being a kind of dragon lady – there is nothing to that,” a visibly angry Reagan assured reporters.

But Mrs. Reagan herself and other insiders later confirmed her role in rounding up support for Regan’s ouster and persuading the president that it had to be done, because of the Iran-Contra scandal that broke under Regan’s watch.

She delved into policy issues, too.

She urged Reagan to finally break his long silence on the AIDS crisis. She nudged him to publicly accept responsibility for the arms-for-hostages scandal.

And she worked to buttress those advisers urging him to thaw U.S. relations with the Soviet Union, over the objections of the administration’s “evil empire” hawks.

Near the end of Reagan’s presidency, ex-chief of staff Regan took his revenge with a memoir revealing that the first lady routinely consulted a San Francisco astrologer to guide the president’s schedule.

Mrs. Reagan, who had a longtime interest in horoscopes, maintained that she used the astrologer’s forecasts only in hopes of predicting the safest times for her husband to venture out of the White House after the assassination attempt.

Anne Frances Robbins, nicknamed Nancy, was born on July 6, 1921, in New York City. Her parents separated soon after she was born and her mother, film and stage actress Edith Luckett, went on the road. Nancy was reared by an aunt until 1929, when her mother married Dr. Loyal Davis, a wealthy Chicago neurosurgeon who gave Nancy his name and a socialite’s home. She majored in drama at Smith College and found stage work with the help of her mother’s connections.

By ALAN SCHER ZAGIER The Associated Press ST. LOUIS – Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office is considering legal action against the state’s natural resources agency for what prosecutors call a failure to follow the terms of a court-brokered plan to toughen oversight of coal mines.

The tougher regulations were part of broader reforms touted with much fanfare two years by the administration of former Gov. Pat Quinn. They followed criticisms by environmentalists who alleged the state Department of Natural Resources was too cozy with mining companies and other businesses it regulates.

The rules included a requirement that regulators provide earlier citizen notification of new mine applications and that mine permit applicants be available to answer questions at public hearings. But two years later, the new rules have not been enacted, and the resources agency now wants to package the new rules with other pending chang-

Governors State University trustees OK tuition freeze

UNIVERSITY PARK – Governors State University’s trustees have unanimously approved a tuition freeze for the suburban Chicago campus in the upcoming academic year.

The trustees approved the tuition freeze Friday and renewed their pledge to front funds for the school’s Monetary Award Program.

The university has covered $3 million in MAP funding for more than 1,900 low-income students this academic year amid Illinois’ ongoing budget standoff.

School President Elaine Maimon said the trustees’ decision “should allow our students to enroll and concentrate on their studies without worrying about whether the state will honor its promises to them.”

The state has 15 pending requests for new mines, permit revisions or renewals that could be affected by the new requirements, government records show.

The reforms adopted by the DNR in 2014 settled a lawsuit by Madigan, a Democrat, over the agency’s 2007 approval of a surface mine near the central Illinois town of Banner amid resident complaints about potential threats to their water supply. IDNR eventually rejected the permit, but Illinois prosecutors continued to press their case against the agency, resulting in a March 2014 consent agreement in Sangamon County Circuit Court.

SPRINGFIELD – Amid a drawnout fight over the budget, two Republicans are among the state legislators calling attention to plans seeking more funding to improve street safety for students walking to school.

ROCKFORD – Authorities in northeast Illinois said three people are dead after an early morning vehicle crash.

Winnebago County Sheriff’s spokesman Ken DeCoster told The Rockford Register Star the crash occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday. DeCoster said four people were in the vehicle when it crashed. He said the vehicle left the road, hit a guardrail and bridge abutment and caught fire.

The driver and front seat passenger were trapped in the wreckage. It’s unclear if they died from trauma injuries or the fire. A male passenger was ejected from the vehicle and later died at a hospital.

A fourth man was able to crawl out of the vehicle. DeCoster said he suffered injuries that weren’t believed to be life-threatening.

Public health office to close over budget problems

MATTOON – A county health department in central Illinois said it will close one of its offices because of the state’s ongoing budget crisis.

The Mattoon Journal-Gazette reported that the Coles County Health Department plans to close its Mattoon office Tuesday.

The department’s main office in Charleston will remain open.

Administrator Diana Stenger said the department is owed

$169,000 by the state.

Missing radioactive container found in Wayne County

SPRINGFIELD – A radioactive container that went missing last fall has been found by a Wayne County farmer and returned to its owner, a company facing nearly $80,000 in fines and search cost reimbursements.

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency said Wayne County Well Surveys Inc. Fairfield reported the device’s recovery Friday.

The radioactive “well logging source holder” contains americium, a highly radioactive metal. It went missing in October 2015.

The discovery came one day after the state agency issued a preliminary order seeking to impose a $25,500 penalty on the southeastern Illinois company.

IEMA also wants the company to pay the nearly $53,000 cost of searching for the device. The search spanned 18 counties in Illinois and Indiana.

The container was last known to be in a company vehicle.

Some in GOP seeing Cruz as the best option to Trump

By JULIE PACE The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Republican leaders Sunday grappled with the prospect that the best hope for stopping Donald Trump’s march to the nomination may be Ted Cruz – the only candidate who causes as much heartburn among party elites as the billionaire businessman, if not sometimes more.

The Texas senator split contests with Trump in Saturday’s voting, bolstering his argument that only he can defeat the real estate mogul.

Trump and Cruz are now significantly outpacing Marco Rubio in the delegate count, further shrinking the Florida senator’s already narrow path to the nomination.

If Rubio’s slide continues, he would be the latest establishment candidate to fall victim to an angry, frustrated electorate that cares little about endorsements from party leaders or newspaper editorial boards. Rubio has rolled out both at warp speed in recent weeks, but his appeal with Republican voters is not keeping pace.

Rubio did pick up a victory Sunday in Puerto Rico’s primary, his second win of the 2016 cycle. Democrats, meanwhile, held caucuses Sunday in Maine. Sanders won that contest, beating rival Hillary Clinton for his eighth win of the 19 contests already held in the nomination process.

The wary interest in Cruz from more mainstream Republicans is the latest unexpected twist in a nominating contest where talk of a contested convention or third-party candidate is becoming commonplace.

Mitt Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, said Cruz is indeed “emerging” as the chief anti-Trump candidate.

“I think a lot of people were surprised by how well Ted Cruz did,” said Romney, who has thrust himself back into the political discussion with a searing takedown of Trump in a speech last week.

Romney has stepped back into the spotlight at a moment of crisis and chaos for the Republican Party. Leaders in Washington who assumed hard-liners such as Cruz represented a minority view have been left wondering if they’re the ones out of step with their party’s base.

For months, Republican elites have lumped Trump and Cruz together, arguing that neither could win in November’s general election.

Cruz is an uncompromising conservative who has publicly criticized party leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, for what he sees as a pattern of giving in too easily to Presi-

dent Barack Obama.

Cruz particularly angered Senate leaders when he helped orchestrate the 2013 government shutdown, which failed in achieving the senator’s stated goal of defunding Obama’s health care reform law.

But Cruz has built a loyal following among conservatives and evangelical Christians. After winning the leadoff Iowa caucuses, he’s also beaten Trump in five more states, more than any other candidate.

Trump still leads the field with at least 378 delegates, while Cruz has at least 295.

Rubio and Kasich lag far behind in the race to reach the 1,237 delegates needed to clinch the Republican nomination.

Rubio and Kasich desperately need to win in their home states of Florida and Ohio on March 15 to have any credible case for staying in the race.

Trump’s lead has sparked a flurry of discussions among Republicans about complicated long-shot options to stop him. Rival campaigns are exploring ways to prevent Trump from getting the delegates he needs to win the nomination outright, then defeat him at the convention in July.

St. Francis junior guard refuses to allow Erb’s palsy to hinder his game

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com University of St. Francis men’s basketball coach Ryan Marks was in an enviable position after last season. Most of the roster that received significant playing time as the Saints finished 2310 and made their first national tournament appearance in 20 years would return.

However, he had room for limited additions in the spring.

“We wanted to add a couple guys,

and we wanted to add the right guys who would fit the personality of this team,” Marks said. “Landus (Anderson) was that.”

A muscular 6-foot-6 junior guard, Anderson is a regular guy, a contributor in multiple areas for the Saints (283), who are headed to the NAIA Division II National Tournament later this week in Branson, Missouri, as one of four No. 1 seeds in a 32-team field.

He has started 26 of the 27 games and has played and averages 22.2 minutes, 7.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.2 steals and

1.6 assists. He is shooting at a .442 clip from the floor, .345 from 3-point range and .800 from the free-throw line. In addition, he is a lockdown defender. Put it all together, and he is among the many reasons USF achieved the No. 1 national ranking late in the regular season.

Anderson would identify himself as a normal guy on the basketball floor, but from a fan’s perspective, he is anything but. He has Erb’s palsy, a neurological disorder that allows him only limited use of his right hand. Nerve damage occurred at birth, when a doc-

tor had to take extraordinary measures to get his shoulders through the birth canal.

Despite that, Anderson grew up playing basketball in Florida. “I always wanted to play basketball, even when other kids were out playing tag or whatever,” he said.

He has the bloodlines for the sport.

His father, Lindsey, played at Florida A&M; and his mother, Pamela, played at Florida State College of Jacksonville.

Anderson may have been a Division I player if not for the Erb’s palsy. At that, a couple of D-Is showed interest in him out of high school in Melbourne, Fla. But he wanted to stay closer to home and played the last two seasons for Marks’ friend, Jeremy Shulman, the coach at Eastern Florida State, a successful junior college program.

“Jeremy’s team had a really good season last year, and I finally talked to him in May to congratulate him,” Marks said. “We shot the breeze a little.

Then he asked me if I’m still recruiting. He said if I need a wing, he has one who is a good student and could be the perfect guy.

“He told me he had a lot of others look at him, but he cautioned me that he’s going to look a little different on the basketball floor. He said he would text me so I could see his highlights.”

Not long after that, Marks was standing in the parking lot of the Sullivan Center when Shulman sent the link. Marks watched on his phone, and watched some more. With every highlight, he moved the phone closer and closer to his face to get a better view, he was so awe-struck.

“I think I wound up hitting my nose,” he said. “I said, ‘This guy is doing all that with his left hand only?’ At the end of the webcast, I heard a commentator say the same thing. Landus was doing things with one arm most can’t do with two.”

Anderson, indeed, was a fit, the guy Marks wanted to round out his team.

But first, more studying.

“I told myself I had to watch his productivity and not be swayed by how he did what he did,” Marks said. “The productivity was there, and he has high academic ability, too. He is studying criminal justice and wants to go to law school. He had a 4.0 GPA his first semester here.”

A GOOD FIT

It is not always easy for a transfer to fit into an established program, much less come in and earn immediate playing time with a team that was about 10 deep in returning regulars. But Anderson’s transition to St. Francis was smooth.

“Everyone likes him,” said USF senior forward llya llyayev, the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year. “He gets along well with everyone on the team, everyone on the other sports teams and in our school. He has a great personality.”

What about what he can do on the court?

“It’s amazing to me, still, how he is doing what he does,” Ilyayev said.

“Coach (Marks) was driving me to the airport last spring and told me about him, and I was skeptical at first. But at the first open gym where I saw him, I

“My mom and grandma and dad raised me not to complain about what you don’t have. They said to be glad for what you do have,” he said.

In St. Francis’ exhibition game in late November at Notre Dame, at about the time Anderson saw snow for the first time in his life, he caught an elbow below the eye.

“I had an orbital wall fracture from that,” he said. “It’s what Derrick Rose had. I’ve been dying to play without the mask, but the doctor said I should play with it the remainder of the season. He doesn’t want me to get hit there again.”

Anderson missed a few games with the injury, and it took awhile to get accustomed to the mask. But he has done that and continued to produce.

“He has done an amazing job for his first year in our system,” Kennedy said. “I wasn’t surprised, though, that he was good. I had seen a lot of tapes on him and saw he could play. We learned right away never to underestimate him.”

“When practice or games start, it never crosses my mind that he’s different,” Marks said. “But when I see him not in the moment, I still don’t understand how he does it.

Although Anderson was not sure at first about coming to a small college in Joliet to continue his basketball career, he has nothing but positive feelings about the experience.

“I kind of played out of position in junior college,” he said. “I was a 4.

I’d pick and pop. I wanted to go somewhere the last two years where I would be happy. I’m happy I came here and could be back at my regular position, which is a guard.”

As for meshing with the Saints, Anderson said, “I made the transition here very easily. We’re a family. We’re all brothers. We hold each other accountable, but we also know we have each other’s backs.”

Marks has done his part in making things click for Anderson and all the Saints.

“Coach is the man,” Anderson said.

“I don’t know how he does it. He makes you want to play hard for him. That was missing for me at juco.”

“It’s not how much LeBron scores,” he said. “It’s how he does the little things, the small things that contribute to the team.”

That’s something Anderson learned from a young age. Do what you can with what you are given to make your team better.

Marks, his coaching staff and Anderson’s teammates appreciate that to the hilt as they prepare for the national tournament.

Observers outside the program, meanwhile, continue to express amazement at an athlete who is unique and yet a consistent contributor on a winning team.

scoring factor, as he was with an 18-point effort in the win over Providence, it could pay big dividends for the Warriors.

And Lincoln-Way West also has been receiving good production from junior guards Jay Bumstead and Nolan Green.

The Warriors return to action on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. semifinal game in Streator against a Peotone squad that is also making history.

Coach Scott Maupin has led the

Blue Devils to a 23-6 record following their 51-47 victory over Pontiac in the Kankakee Regional finals.

It was Peotone’s third regional championship, and all three have been captured during Maupin’s 17 years on the job. It’s the Blue Devils’ first title since 2011.

The 23 wins is tied for the second-highest total in school history.

The 1960 squad also won 23 games while Peotone’s 1955 team recorded 26 victories.

Heading into the sectional, senior Kale Maupin, the coach’s son, is averaging 16 points and seven rebounds while senior Scott Gasik averages over 15 points a game.

Considering Hillcrest has captured four sectional titles, as well as two state trophies, in the past six years under coach Don Houston, it is the team to beat in the sectional.

The Hawks (22-6), who received 35 points from Marcus Garrett in their regional opener, defeated Rich South 58-46 to claim the title in the Thornridge Regional. This is their 16th sectional trip in the past 19 years, dating back to Tom Cappel’s successful tenure.

Hillcrest’s opponent in Tuesday’s 7 p.m. semifinal game is Plano (19-9), which beat Streator 62-52 to win its own regional tournament. Coach Kyle Kee’s Reapers captured their first regional title since 2012.

Hillcrest was the top-seed in one sub-sectional while Lincoln-Way West was seeded third. In the other sub-sectional, Peotone drew the top-seed while Plano was the second-seed.

The sectional championship is 7 p.m. Friday. Whatever team advances will play in next Tuesday’s Joliet Central Super-Sectional against the winner of the St. Laurence Sectional, which features Morgan Park, Mount Carmel, Bogan and Chicago Vocational.

NEW LENOX – Members of Lincoln-Way West’s boys basketball team were honored after Friday’s regional title win over Providence Catholic for making history.

It was the first time since the Lincoln-Way district split following the 2000-2001 school year that a boys basketball program had won consecutive regional titles.

But after falling just short of a sectional title a year ago, West is hoping to equal the feat of the 2001 Lincoln-Way squad by capturing a sectional championship.

While much of the local interest this week will focus on how Joliet Central, Joliet West, Minooka and Oswego fare at the Class 4A Lockport Sectional, the Warriors will make the long trek to Streator to compete in the Class 3A sectional there.

Most observers probably expect a rematch of last year’s Rich East Sectional finals, in which Hillcrest rallied to claim a 40-37 victory over Lincoln-Way West.

But a pair of programs from the Interstate Eight Conference, Peotone and Plano, are looking to upset those plans during the semifinals, which are Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Warriors (18-9) turned in one of their better performances of the season when they beat the Celtics 5347 on Friday to win their own regional title.

In the final half, the hosts shot 12 of 18 from the floor, were 12 of 14 from the free throw line and only made one turnover, which came with just under 2:00 remaining.

That was a far cry from how the squad executed down the stretch in a few contests earlier this season, which resulted in some disappointing setbacks.

But under the guidance of coaches Brian Flaherty and Dick Mandella, it was a good bet that the Warriors would put it all together by the end of the season and they certainly have.

Junior guard Marco Pettinato has demonstrated why he’s again one of the area’s top players. He entered the postseason averaging over 20 points a game, in addition to six rebounds and four assists.

Senior forward Jon Marotta, who like Pettinato, was a starter on last year’s sectional finalist, was averaging 12.5 points, while senior guard Cam Gavin has nearly four assists per game.

Lewis men win GLVC, earn D-II tourney bid STAFF, SUBMITTED REPORTS ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The young Lewis men’s basketball team has earned its wings.

The Flyers completed a huge weekend Sunday when they beat Wisconsin-Parkside, 80-71, in the championship game of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.

That marks Lewis’ sixth GLVC men’s basketball championship and the second earned at the postseason tournament.

The Flyers are the third No. 5 seed to win the crown and grab the GLVC’s automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Division II national tournament. The 64-team field was scheduled to be revealed late Sunday night.

Parkside (24-5), ranked 14th in the nation, entered as the No. 3 seed in the tournament. Lewis (24-8), which has won seven of eight and 11 of its last 13, had knocked off the No. 1 seed, Bellarmine, in Saturday night’s semifinal after opening Friday with a quarterfinal victory over No. 4 seed Indianapolis.

“We played really, really, well,” Flyers coach Scott Trost said from the Flyers’ bus. “We have a young group that are learning what it means to together. To beat those three teams

that we beat back-to-back is quite an accomplished. We have some awfully tired kids on this bus.”

Lewis, which never trailed, led by as much as 19 points, but UW-Parkside managed to tie things on three occasions. Thanks to 54.3-percent shooting on 19 of 35 in the first half, the Flyers led by 15 points at the break. Parkside got back within two at the 9:13 mark and again with 5:32 remaining, but the Flyers fended off the Rangers in the end.

“We knew they would come back at us,” Trost said. “(Andy) Mazurczak, who was player of the year in the conference, took the game over for them for a while. But our guys kept their poise and did not panic.”

Kyle Nelson had game highs of 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Flyers. Tournament MVP Max Strus scored 17 with four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Lewis guard Miles Simelton also was all-tournament pick. Mazurczak scored 22 points for Parkside.

In the distance medley relay, the USF team of sophomore Ashlee Knott, sophomore Lesley Lopez, senior Daryll Rodriguez and senior Brooke Johnson earned All-America status with a fourth-place finish in a school-record 12:00.89. The USF 4x800 relay team of sophomore Catherine Crosson (Plainfield North), Knott, Lopez and Rodriguez finished second (9:11.78) behind national champion Benedictine (Kan.).

Juniors Isi Edeko and Raven Kelly (Romeoville) both garnered All-America status. Edeko placed fifth in the triple jump (38-3.25), while Kelly captured seventh in the shot put (45-3).

The USF 4x800 relay of freshman Alex Lima (Western Springs/Lyons), sophomore John Principato (Plainfield Central), sophomore Aaron Sanchez and sophomore Misael Tobias (Plainfield South) was fifth in 7:48.52 to garner All-America accolades. The Saints finished 29th as a team.

Kane gets Blackhawks off to quick start in win over Red Wings

By JAY COHEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – The special teams were quite special once again. Patrick Kane got the Blackhawks off to a fast start, and Corey Crawford stepped up when they struggled in the second period.

Not a bad little tuneup for a crucial two-game trip.

Kane scored his 38th goal on the first shot of the game and Crawford made 33 saves, helping the Blackhawks beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 on Sunday.

“That was another fast game against them,” Crawford said.

“They’ve got a lot of speed. I thought we got better as the game went on. A big kill to start the third, and some big insurance goals after that.”

each had a power-play goal as the Hawks won for the third time in four games, including a 5-2 victory at Detroit on Wednesday. The Blackhawks went 2 for 3 with the man advantage and have at least one power-play goal in each of their last four games.

Next up for the Stanley Cup champions is St. Louis on Wednesday night, and then a visit to Dallas on Friday night. The Blackhawks (41-215) and Stars are on top of the Western Conference with 87 points apiece, and the Blues also are in the mix for the Central Division title.

“We’ve got a lot of division games coming up,” said captain Jonathan Toews, who tacked on his 24th goal in the third. “Those aren’t going to be easy ones. It’ll be good preparation for the end of the year. We don’t want to look too far ahead.”

had just started its usual derisive Detroit chant when Kane skated up the right side and beat Petr Mrazek with a wrist shot under the goaltender’s glove just 21 seconds into the game.

Kane’s eighth goal in his last 13 games ran his NHL-best point total to a career-high 89.

The Red Wings (32-22-11) played without center Pavel Datsyuk, who was scratched due to an illness. Datsyuk has 13 goals and 23 assists in 49 games.

“I didn’t think the first goal was

one that should have went in,” Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said. “That’s one that Petr normally has and so then you’re kind of down right away. The second goal was one that might have been unfortunate a little bit, but it went in nonetheless. Then the next thing you know you’re down 2-0 right away.

“You have to change momentum in the game and that’s why we made that decision.

The goaltender change sparked Detroit for a while. Gustav Nyquist’s 16th goal trimmed Chicago’s lead to 2-1 at 8:34 of the opening period, and the Red Wings outshot the Blackhawks 13-3 in the second.

With Toews in the box for slashing, Crawford made a terrific kick save on rookie Dylan Larkin early in the third. The Red Wings went 0 for 3 on the power play.

Scott captures Cadillac Championship for 2nd straight win

By TIM REYNOLDS The Associated Press DORAL, Fla. – Adam Scott faced a daunting challenge, a sixshot deficit with 13 holes remaining on a course that was playing tougher than it had at any point this week.

And after overcoming that, he needed to survive two brushes with big trouble on the final hole to finish the job.

Scott won for the second straight week, shooting a final-round 69 to win the Cadillac Championship by one shot over Bubba Watson. It’s the second win for Scott in a World Golf Championships event, his 13th career win on the PGA Tour and he now hasn’t finished lower than second in any of his last three starts.

“Everything fell the right way

for me today,” Scott said.

Scott finished the week at 12-under 276. Watson (68) was alone in second, and Danny Willett (69) and Rory McIlroy (74) were tied for third, two shots back. Phil Mickelson (70) was alone in fifth at 9 under and Jimmy Walker shot the round of the day, a 6-under 66 to finish alone in sixth at 8 under.

With course owner Donald Trump popping in on Sunday, arriving by helicopter and greeting fans as he drove around in a cart, there was plenty of drama away from the fairways and greens.

Scott ensured there was a ton on the grass as well, after two double-bogeys in a three-hole span on the front side seemed to send his round into a tailspin.

That is, until he got hot at just the right time with birdies on six of

his next nine holes after the second double.

“It was such a challenge out there today,” Scott said. “I knew if I could just get a couple before the turn, maybe I’ll have a chance.”

It’s anyone’s guess if Scott will get a chance to defend the title at Doral in 2017. General Motors’ sponsorship agreement with the event ends this week and with no sponsor, there’s no tournament.

“Our hope is that the future could allow us to stay here and continue to build the tournament,” PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem said Sunday afternoon, meeting with reporters before sitting down privately with Trump to talk about the tournament’s future. “But we’ll have more to say about that after we do a full evaluation of our performance this year.”

Brad Keselowski passes Kyle Busch late to win at Las Vegas

By GREG BEACHAM The Associated Press LAS VEGAS – Brad Keselowski spent nearly a full year winless and watching while Team Penske teammate Joey Logano went to Victory Lane five times.

Keselowski had to drive through wind, rain, sand and Logano himself to finally hit it big in Vegas again.

Keselowski passed Kyle Busch with five laps to go Sunday and surged to his second win in three years in the NASCAR race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway under weird and windy weather conditions.

After getting past Logano and tracking down Busch, whose right front wheel vibrated and struggled down the stretch, Keselowski drove his Ford to his first Sprint Cup Series victory since Fontana in March 2015.

“For Team Penske, it’s our 50th anniversary,” Keselowski said. “To get the first win of the year, it feels real good.”

Keselowski had to gamble on fuel late, and he thought he had blown the race earlier with a speeding penalty.

The risks paid off for the 2012 series champion, who claimed he hadn’t been dwelling on his winless skid over the past year.

“It’s hard to believe it’s been 34 races,” Keselowski said. “We’ve led a lot of races in that time span. Probably deserved to win a few more races than that. ... There was a lot of misfortune, and then there was a lot of self-inflicted things that I could have done better and beyond. But I can’t sit here and dwell on that.”

Logano finished second and Jimmie Johnson came in third in the opener of NASCAR’s three-week Southwest swing. Busch finished fourth, falling a few laps shy of completing a weekend sweep after dominating the Xfinity Series race Saturday.

“It took a long time to get by Joey,” Keselowski said. “He put up a heck of a fight. If anyone ever wants to say that your teammates just lay over and give it to you, that’s not how we are at Team Penske. We race each other hard but clean. That was really something to see.”

Keselowski didn’t pit with the leaders with 52 laps left, managing to make his fuel last with enough caution laps.

He also persevered through a lurking storm that blew gale-force winds and light rain onto the desert track.

The wind regularly blew debris into the drivers’ grills, getting pole-sitter Kurt Busch and Kyle Larson in the opening laps. Later, the wind picked up sharply while a dust storm rose on the outskirts of the track, obscuring the view of nearby Nellis Air Force Base and briefly dropping more rain.

SHOREWOOD – “Hugs for Hounds Easter Egg Hunt,” an annual spring outing for dogs and their owners, will begin at 11 a.m. March 26 at the Forest Preserve District of Will County’s Hammel Woods Dog Park in Shorewood.

Shorewood HUGS, a local nonprofit women’s organization that fulfills wishes and also supports other charitable organizations, is once again partnering with the forest preserve district to present the event. An entry fee of $5 a dog will be donated toward the care, handling and training of the forest preserve’s K-9 officer, Jullo.

Help children fall asleep easily Note to readers: This column is an update of one that first ran in January 2013.

Dear Dr. K: My 6-year-old son just can’t seem to fall asleep at night. He doesn’t fuss – he just doesn’t get enough sleep. Is there anything I can do?

Dear Reader: Kids can have many different kinds of sleep problems. Like your son, they can have trouble falling asleep.

Other kids may fall asleep promptly, but awaken repeatedly. Others may snore or have breathing problems during sleep. Still others may have abnormal movements during sleep.

Fortunately, your son’s problem is one of the easier of these sleep problems to fix. The pediatricians at Harvard Medical School who specialize in sleep problems tell me that correcting a handful of things can cure the problem in most kids: • Stop your son’s caffeine intake at least eight hours before bedtime. Not a lot of 8-year-olds drink coffee or tea, but there’s plenty of caffeine in cola beverages or in chocolate, for example.

• Reduce your son’s exposure to bright light starting two hours before bedtime.

Dimmer light helps the brain prepare for sleep.

• Keep your son’s bedroom dark, quiet and at a comfortable temperature.

• If your son still uses a night-light, choose one with a low-intensity bulb.

• Reduce the intensity of your son’s reading lamp to 40 watts or less.

• Some parents play classical music in the background, hoping it will lull a child to sleep. Bad idea. Music – particularly great music – is not “white noise.”

The ingenious melodies and rhythms are compelling; your son will be (pleasantly) distracted by them. Even generally soft music can have sudden loud moments.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff And if you play it, but let it stop when the piece ends, your son may notice the sudden absence of music and have trouble falling back to sleep without it.

• Remove video games, media players, cellphones, computers and TVs from your son’s bedroom. Pretty obvious advice, I know, but you’d be surprised how often it’s not followed.

• Position your son’s alarm clock so it faces away from the bed. This can be helpful if your son stresses out each time he sees that five more minutes have passed and he’s still awake.

• Keep pets out of your son’s bedroom (and out of his bed).

• Insist your son do his homework at a desk (or better yet, outside the bedroom), not in bed. When homework is done in bed, the associated stress doesn’t go away just because the books are closed.

Really, it’s the same advice I give adults with problems sleeping: Use the bed for sleeping, not for reading, watching TV or playing games. (If you regularly do these things in bed and think they help you fall asleep – and you don’t have trouble sleeping – please ignore my advice.)

Dear Abby: We took my wealthy daughter, husband and their four children to dinner at a very nice restaurant. We insisted on paying so they could each have an expensive dish they only picked at. When it was over and it was obvious they weren’t taking home any leftovers, I started to motion to our waitress to ask for take-home boxes so my wife and I could take all of their uneaten food. My wife shot me the “don’t you dare!” look, so all of it wound up in a dumpster. Needless to say, it became an issue.

This is our second week studying the bidding of two-suited hands.

Look only at the South hand. With your side vulnerable, you open one heart, West passes, North raises to two hearts, and East intervenes with three diamonds. What would you do now?

As I mentioned last week, when the opponents are out of the bidding, and you hit a fit with your partner, keep your second suit hidden.

But when they enter the auction, the dynamic changes. With this South hand, if you jump to four hearts and everyone passes, fine; but what if West goes to five diamonds? What would you do then?

The answer is that you would have no idea. It could be right to double their sacrifice or to bid on to five hearts. However, your partner will know what to do if you describe your hand to him.

When you have a two-suiter, you find a fit in your first suit, and the opponents enter the auction, bend over backward to show your second suit. Here, bid three spades. Then let partner judge what to do over five diamonds.

In this deal from a tournament in Orlando, Florida, North had an easy five-heart bid. He had two magic cards with four-card heart support, and he knew South was very short in diamonds. But if North had had (nearly) all of his stuff in the minors, he would have doubled five diamonds.

Note that five diamonds doubled would have been down only 500, and five hearts made easily.

One last point: If you jump to four hearts over three diamonds, you assume captaincy; you are telling partner that you know what to do if they bid five diamonds.
