bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The man who was shot by police while allegedly pulling a gun Monday has died.

Shaquille C. Barrow, 20, died at 10:55 a.m. Tuesday at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said.

A police officer was frisking Barrow about 4:30 p.m.

Monday near First Avenue and Richards Street when he noticed the butt of a handgun sticking out of his pocket, Benton said. Barrow and Shawn M. Miller, 21, had been stopped because they reportedly matched the description of suspects in a theft that had just been called in from the 100 block of Mississippi Avenue.

“The victim was following [Barrow and Miller] in her vehicle and said they’d threatened to shoot her,” Benton said.

A back-up officer arrived shortly after the first officer stopped Barrow and Miller.

The first officer drew his Taser and ordered Barrow not to move, but the suspect fled from the officer, Benton said.

“As the officer gave chase and ordered the suspect to halt, he observed the suspect retrieving the handgun from his pocket at which time the officer fired out of fear for his safety and the safety of others in the area,” Benton said.

Barrow was struck twice.

Police said a loaded .357 magnum handgun was recovered from him at the scene.

Police say Barrow was a self-admitted gang mem-

ber with a lengthy criminal history, including nine arrests and three convictions, including two for weapons offenses. Barrow was on parole for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon when he was shot.

The officer also was taken to an area hospital, where he was treated and released for injuries that were not life-threatening.

Miller allegedly fled the scene after the shooting. A warrant for his arrest was issued Tuesday on charges of theft, obstructing justice and assault. The warrant carries a $30,000 bond.

Drew Peterson pleads not guilty in murder-for-hire plot

By JOHN O’CONNOR The Associated Press CHESTER – Drew Peterson, a former Bolingbrook police officer convicted of killing his third wife and suspected in his fourth wife’s disappearance, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to trying to hire someone to kill the prosecutor who helped put him in prison.

Peterson waived a preliminary hearing in the court in Randolph County in southern Illinois, near the Menard Correctional Center where he’s serving time. He was charged in February with soliciting an unidentified person to find someone he could pay to kill Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow.

Circuit Judge Richard Brown also granted Peterson’s request for a speedy trial, meaning he would go to trial within 160 days or by July 28.

Randolph County State’s Attorney Jeremy Walker said the state would be ready by July 13.

Prosecutors were prepared to present evidence to the judge Tuesday, but Peterson’s last-minute waiving of the hear-

ing kept them from doing so.

“Basically, we don’t want this case being tried before a jury is ever impaneled,” said Lucas Liefer, Peterson’s attorney.

The state filed a notice Tuesday disclosing that the case against Peterson twice involved use of eavesdropping devices, although it did not provide details.

At the state’s request, Brown barred defense and prosecutors from publicly revealing evidence to protect an informant.

Peterson has been in prison since he was convicted in 2012 of Kathleen Savio’s death eight years earlier. He is serving a 38year sentence.

Peterson, 61, is charged with solicitation of murder for hire and one count of solicitation of murder, both felonies carrying a maximum sentence of at least 30 years in prison.

The new charges are the latest chapter in a case that became a media sensation almost from the day Peterson’s 23-year-old fourth wife, Stacy, disappeared in 2007. A massive effort to find her was unsuc-

cessful, with Peterson accused but never charged in her slaying.

The case continued when Savio’s body was exhumed and authorities ruled her drowning a homicide.

Throughout it all, Peterson maintained his innocence. His attorneys contended Stacy Peterson had run off with another man.

Drew Peterson did not testify at his trial but addressed the court after he was convicted, blaming prosecutors for “the largest railroad job ever.”

He challenged the prosecutor to look him in the eye, then told him to “never forget what you’ve done here.”

Glasgow issued a statement after the new charges were announced, saying he would not let a threat to his personal safety affect the way he does his job. Glasgow declined to comment Tuesday when asked for his reaction to Peterson’s not guilty plea, noting he is a potential witness in the case.

The Police Department’s thoughts and prayers are with the officer, his family, and our entire Police Department, as they are with the loved ones of the deceased.”

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – As Keegan Peretti prepared to make a small, LEGO-based robot travel a specific distance and time at last Thursday’s Robotics Club, she was learning a skill that could apply to a potential future in robotics.

Peretti, a Washington Junior High and Academy eighth-grade student, worked alongside other students in her Robotics Club to build a robot and program it for a coming competition.

The club is part of several after-school initiatives offered by Joliet Public Schools District 86 to increase student exposure to science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM. Peretti is taking the first steps in what may one day be a career as a neurosurgeon.

“I know lots of machinery in surgeries will be done by little machines and robots.

So, I really want to get to it now, so when I prepare for high school or college, I’ll be ready,” she said.

District 86 has expanded after-school and classroom STEM activities for the past two years. Washington Junior High was one of the first schools to have a Robotics Club under this initiative, and the clubs have expanded from three to five schools.

School officials plan to increase efforts to reach new students and sharpen skills needed in the future.

Vikki Kehoe, a Washington Junior High science teacher who also runs the Robotics Club, said she sees enthusiasm from her students.

“They love it. Every day they’re asking, ‘Oh, do we have Robotics Club today?’

They really enjoy it,” she said. “Trying to get one person from each group to do the engineering part, they

Besides the Robotics Club, District 86 is teaching students to use 3D printers, as well as participate in STEM

clubs, National Geo Bee and Hour of Code, which teaches students computer programming.

program coordinator, has said each of the programs reached 255 students this school year. Next year, the schools plan to expand that reach to more than 2,500 stu-

dents.

School officials also plan to embed some STEM programs in the fine arts class rotation for students at the junior high level.

Learning math, science a n d t e c h n o l o g y i s n ’ t a lways the point of District 86’s STEM programs. At the Washington Junior High Robotics Club, students learn about robot building, team building and interviewing, Kehoe said.

“So they’re not just learning how to program the robot, but they have to be able to explain why they chose the design that they did and then they have to work together as a team,” she said.

Across Illinois, school districts had new science standards implemented last year that encourage education in the STEM fields, said Mary Fergus, Illinois State Board of Education spokeswoman.

Exposing students to STEM and potential careers in those fields is about “unlocking the American dream,” she said.

“There’s so many careers in technology and engineering and so many fields where they’ll need a solid foundation that weave in these different contents,” Fergus said. “That’s what the new science standards aim to do.”

Growth touted in State of the City Mayor plans to keep county seat downtown; addresses gambling revenue

JOLIET – Mayor Tom Giarrante said the city is financially sound and seeing new growth in a State of the City speech that hinted at times to the April 7 mayoral election.

“My job as Tom the new mayGiarrante or was to put Joliet finances in order,” Giarrante said at the start of Tuesday’s speech, referring to when he came to office in 2011 and the city projected deficits.

“Today, we are living within our means and not making promises we cannot keep.”

Giarrante referred to “tough decisions in 2012,” when the city enacted a sales tax increase and fee hikes aimed at generating more rev-

enue. Those hikes have been criticized by Councilman Bob O’Dekirk, who also is running for mayor. Also running is Andy Mihelich, chairman of the Joliet Junior College board.

The State of the City speech was given at City Hall, where it has been held the past two years, and was sponsored by the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry. About 75 people attended.

Giarrante highlighted city revenue growth and low debt. He pointed to increases in hotel taxes as a sign Joliet is a destination location and offered numbers on building permits to show the city is seeing new development.

“Developers know that Joliet is revitalized, and the proof is in the numbers,” he said.

Building permit revenue topped $1 million in 2014, up from $728,000 in 2011. Real estate transfer tax revenue reached $1.6 million last year, up by a little more than $500,000 from four years ago.

The mayor did comment on a decline in gambling revenue, down about $3.8 million since 2011. Gambling revenue has been on a steady decline since 2007 and the onset of the recession.

“The only sure bet is that gaming revenues will not re-

turn to the glory days of 1992 to 2007,” Giarrante said.

He noted, however, that gambling tax revenue remains a major source of revenue. The city’s share of gambling taxes was $19 million in 2014.

Giarrante also focused on downtown development and efforts to help Will County build its next courthouse downtown.

“I plan to do whatever it takes to keep the county seat in downtown Joliet,” he said.

Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr., who attended

the speech, said Giarrante has had a “commitment to working together in making sure the county operations stay in downtown Joliet.”

John Greuling, Will County Center for Economic Development chief executive, said the building trends in Joliet are seen elsewhere in Will County.

“Joliet tends to be a good barometer for the county overall,” he said.

O’Dekirk, contacted later, said the state of the city also is reflected in the decline in numbers of snow plows available for winter storms, a reduced number of police officers on the streets, and an inability to fully fund pensions.

“We’ll have to have a difference of opinion on the condition of Joliet,” O’Dekirk said. “I believe it’s a city that has great potential. It’s not a city that’s in great shape.”

Joliet buys scoreboard for Silver Cross Field

The Joliet City Council voted 6-3 Tuesday to spend $361,000 for a new scoreboard with video screen.

Council members divided over whether the city should spend the money to replace a scoreboard said to be in such bad condition that it might not work when the baseball season starts in May. Ultimately, council members argued that the city had a responsibility as a landlord to replace the scoreboard.

But the vote also ended with two council members urging a serious effort to sell Silver Cross Field, which is owned by the city.

“The bottom line is we own the ballpark,” Councilman John Gerl said. “It’s our asset. If we didn’t want to have a team, we should have decided two years ago that we didn’t want the team and to mothball the ballpark.”

Gerl referred to the 2012 contract with current ownership of the Joliet Slammers minor-league baseball team. The contract included a clause obligating the city to replace the scoreboard when it reached the end of its useful life.

That time is now, Slammers management said at previous meetings this week.

They said it’s not clear whether the scoreboard, installed when the stadium opened in 2002 with a 10-year life expectancy, will last the summer.

The Slammers also argue that a better video screen will enhance their ability to attract other events to Silver Cross Field.

Councilman Larry Hug, who voted against the scoreboard, asked staff to begin discussions with the Slammers about a possible sale of the stadium. Councilman Jim McFarland, another no vote, said he would like the council to take a vote on whether or not to put Silver Cross Field

up for sale.

Voting to buy the scoreboard from the company Daktronics were: Gerl, Terry Morris, Jan Quillman, Michael Turk, Bettye Gavin and Mayor Tom Giarrante. Voting no were Hug, McFarland and Bob O’Dekirk.

Cell tower

In a unanimous vote, the council voted against a 120foot cell tower that would have gone on property behind the Knights of Columbus hall on Infantry Drive.

The Knights of Columbus contend they need the revenue from the cell tower to keep the hall open. Neighbors in the Golf View Estates and Inwood Terrace developments said the cell tower would be too close to their

homes.

A representative from the Knights of Columbus told the council at its Monday workshop meeting that without the cell tower, the organization would sell the land for commercial development.

Quillman said she heard from neighbors who said they would rather see the land developed than become the site of cell tower.

“The folks didn’t care if a strip mall went up there,” Quillman said.

Pilot Travel Center

The council also unanimously approved changes in an annexation agreement that will allow a Pilot Travel Center gas station with truck stop to be built at Route 53 and Laraway Road.

Construction bids come in for First Midwest Bank remodel

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Construction bids have come in for Will County’s planned remodel of about 26,000 square feet of the second and third floors of the First Midwest Bank building.

The two floors in the downtown Joliet structure will house some of the Will County Sheriff’s offices.

Montgomery-based construction company Lite Construction came in with the lowest bid for the work, at $332,567. Seven companies bid on the project, including three from Will County, Brian Kronewitter, of the Aurora architectural firm Cordogan Clark and Associates, told the County Board’s capital improvements committee Tuesday.

Lite Construction came in $40,000 below the second-lowest bidder, according to bid documents.

The base construction costs do not include information technology and security costs, said Nick Palmer, chief of staff for County Executive Larry Walsh. That work will be done internally by the county.

In all, the project could cost the county $450,000.

The move into the First Midwest Bank building, 158 N. Scott St., is only temporary, but allows the county sheriff’s operations to move out of the antiquated Eagle Building, 20 W. Washington St. The sheriff’s office will likely use the First Midwest Bank building for three to five years. This move helps set in motion the eventual Eagle Building demolition.

The sheriff’s operations will eventually move into a new building.

If the County Board approves the contract at its

March 19 meeting, construction would begin and be completed by summer.

The county bought the First Midwest Bank building last year with the intent to build a new courthouse on the 4.3-acre site.

In other news, county officials still wait to acquire two of the 13 parcels needed to install new water and sewer lines for a new Laraway Road facility for the sheriff’s offices, according to Dave Tkac, deputy chief of staff for the county executive.

A long-term licensing agreement between the Forest Preserve District of Will County and Joliet must also be approved by the forest preserve board. Tkac believes that vote could come in April.

In the meantime, Tkac asked the committee Tuesday to authorize the engineering firm to complete the project bid documents.

Interest growing for sports complex

“We are very full on peak hours already, between 5 p.m. and midnight,” Withaar said.

The Plainfield Sports Facility Group was formed by Withaar and a group of private residents in 2013 after they realized Plainfield’s sports fields were overcrowded.

Discussions resulted in plans for the sports facility, which Withaar said could be-

come the largest such facility in the country.

It would include several full-size soccer fields and an indoor baseball area, among several other sports fields and courts.

Withaar wouldn’t reveal how much the privately funded facility would cost, but he

previously said it would be a multimillion dollar project.

The group is working with the park district and the village of Plainfield on the project.

A site has been located for the complex, on the northeast part of downtown Plainfield, between Wood Farm and Van Dyke roads and the railroad tracks.

“This was land that was going to be set aside for the old STAR Line project,” said Mayor Mike Collins, referencing a proposed Metra station that was to sit on a line from Joliet to O’Hare International Airport before the state ran out of project funding.

“I think it would not only help the village, but the park district,” he said.

Withaar said the group still is in the financial planning phase, but the complex could be built by fall of 2016.

PLAINFIELD – Plans for a mega-sized Plainfield sports complex are attracting interest from local and regional sports organizations, its owners say.

Eric Withaar, a managing member for Plainfield Sports Facility Group, said word of the 346,847-squarefoot indoor sports facility has spread nationally and several more letters of intent from groups were received.

“Ever since last year, we’ve started getting phone calls from some significant travel clubs for soccer, baseball, volleyball and basketball,” he said. “We’ve had to go back to the drawing board and re-work the financials for this project.”

New software considered

Trustees also authorized Finance Director Heather Morandi to pursue a contract package with BS&A Software for financial software. Morandi told the board her department relies heavily on software daily, and the program the village uses is almost 20 years old and not supported well by the manufacturer.

The new BS&A software is designed for the needs of a village the size of Channahon, she said, and the company also was the lowest bidder of the four that responded. The package will go to the board for approval when the details are in place, Morandi said, and the cost would not exceed $200,000.

CHANNAHON – Village trustees may consider a version of the same “cupcake law” approved last fall by Joliet.

Resident Tracey Wur zinger, a chef who makes wedding and event cakes for White Eagle Country Club in Naperville, wants to start a small business at her South Bridle Path Road home, making cakes, cupcakes, cake pops, cookies and other baked goods for sale for parties and other occasions.

Wurzinger said her specialties are caramel cake with caramel mousse filling and almond poppyseed cake with

white chocolate mousse filling.

She appeared Monday before the Channahon Village Board asking trustees if they would consider a cupcake law in Channahon.

The cupcake law, or HB 5354, was passed into Illinois law in June 2014, allowing people to sell goods baked in their homes without acquiring permits as long as the dollars received per month do not exceed $1,000.

There is one loophole: Local governing bodies must adopt an ordinance authorizing the direct sale of baked goods.

Village President Joe Cook said he and staff would take a look at the ordinance.

Trustees also approved several road closures for events happening the rest of the year.

The Eikon 5K Run, coordinated by Calvary Church members, will result in closures of 119th Street between Van Dyke Road and Millennium Parkway, 248th Avenue between Winterberry Lane and 111th Street and four intersecting residential streets crossing 248th Avenue.

The 2015 Cruise Nights will start May 26 and occur every Tuesday from 5 to 9 p.m. through Sept. 1, except for July 21.

Public works projects

The board approved contracts for several public works projects discussed during a budget hearing earlier this year.

Safety improvements for the 135th Street railroad pedestrian crossing were awarded to Davis Concrete Construction Company for $140,629.

The 2015 Downtown Plainfield Concrete Program was awarded to Austin Tyler Construction for $138,490.

A water system controls upgrade – which includes replacement of software, upgrade of the control interface and historical data collection – was awarded to Automatic Control Services for $50,000.

JOLIET – Officials from the Will County Sheriff’s Office seek county authority to spend eviction cancellation fee revenue that has accumulated in a bank account for the past year or so.

The issue was up for discussion during Tuesday’s Will County Board’s Finance Committee meeting.

Eviction fees charged to parties who bring forth an eviction were refundable with an eviction cancellation until a 2014 policy change, so the money was placed in a separate bank account – one historically used to reimburse parties, said Jerry Nudera, deputy chief for the sheriff’s support services.

Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Mary Tatroe told the committee she believes the account was set up some time ago for this purpose, but it’s unclear whether it should have been

In addition to the Joliet location, Saddle Creek is considering another site in Indiana, John Greuling, president and CEO for the Will County Center for Economic Development, told Finance Committee members on Tuesday.

“It’s a good project. It’s a good company,” Greuling said after a brief presentation.

The tax abatement agreement gives Saddle Creek a 50 percent cut in property taxes over a three-year period.

The company’s reduction of property taxes amount to $42,914 annually, according to documents.

Saddle Creek would employ 200 people at a plant that would conduct light assembly of off-road recreational vehicles and packaged beverages.

PLAINFIELD – A new recreational and private club received a special use permit from the Plainfield Village Board on Monday after parking and noise issues were straightened out.

Warehouse 109, named after the suite number for the industrial space it will occupy, will host wedding, birthday and other family events in a 3,855-square-foot space at 14903 S. Center St. in Plainfield.

Plans for the site were presented during a Jan. 6 Plan Commission meeting.

“There were a number of residents and they expressed some opinions and concerns about the project,” Jonathan Proulx, a village planner, said at Monday’s meeting. “Many of those concerns were addressed by clarifying the nature of the parking and the timing of the parking.”

Residents also had issues with potential noise from the club.

Owner Clayton Olson said the club’s hours wouldn’t conflict with hours for an already existing dog training center next door. Also, Proulx said the club agreed to stipulations that would limit events indoors, with a maximum of 20 events per year hosting no more than 150 people per event.

“There were a number of residents and they expressed some opinions and concerns about the project. Many of those concerns were addressed by clarifying the nature of the parking and the timing of the parking.”

About $114,000 sits in the account, but the sheriff’s office wants to use that money for vehicle replacement.

So far this year, the sheriff’s office has processed nearly 160 eviction cancellations. There were 980 cancellations in 2014. The department handled about 745 actual evictions that same year.

A lot of paperwork and time goes into eviction notices, Nudera said, and much of the work already is complete by the time someone cancels.

Joliet, Plainfield school leaders see value in prioritizing state mandates

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Many requirements the state imposes on school districts benefit students and the community, but they come with a price tag, said Tom Hernandez, Plainfield School District 202 spokesman.

At a time when state funding continues to decrease for cash-strapped school districts, providing money for requirements – or mandates – that the state does not pay for poses a challenge, Hernandez said.

“That price tag can be substantial,” he said.

But new proposed legislation, introduced by state Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood, in late February may give school districts more flexibility when following unfunded mandates.

The proposed bill, still in its infancy, would allow school districts to not comply with or discharge any unfunded mandate placed on them by the Illinois School Code or Illinois State Board of Education.

School districts would have to hold a public hearing and referendum on the matter, and report discharged unfunded mandates to ISBE. “We are trying to find the perfect niche in directing these unfunded mandates and responsibilities that weigh on the teachers and students, and at the same time preserve a solid education system,” Bertino-Tarrant said.

The bill would allow school districts to prioritize mandates for their specific communities, such as those setting classroom size requirements, she said.

School leaders would not be interested in asking for waivers on safety or special education requirements, said Arlene Albert, Joliet Township High School Board vice president.

But they would be interested in waivers for unfunded mandates if that could open up more educational opportunities for students, she said.

“We would be interested in being able to simply have more flexibility in the curric-

ulum that we can offer to our students, particularly if we’re having to deal with a mandate that’s not paid for … one that we could perhaps work in with another class, or one that we would just take out partly so we could have another class that might fit with our curriculum,” she said.

She said she spoke with Bertino-Tarrant about the bill and she will follow it closely.

“Bottom line here is, what is good for the kids? Beyond that, what can we afford to do, which is very important because this is taxpayer money.

Our board is very cognizant of that … so we’re looking forward to working with [Bertino-Tarrant] on the bill,” she said.

Hernandez said the value of state mandates is not disputable, but some require money and resources, such as hiring more teachers and creating curriculum.

“If we were to have some flexibility to consider those expenses in the greater scheme of our budget, that would be helpful,” he said.

Dwight looks to build new pool

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com DWIGHT – The village of Dwight is looking at ways to finance a new city pool to replace the current Stevenson Pool, which is almost 40 years old.

Village Administrator Kevin McNamara said the pool committee recommended creating a family aquatic center to replace the existing pool for an estimated cost of $4.1 million.

“We are looking at replacing the current pool, which was built in 1976 and is coming to the end of its life,” McNamara said.

The original pool was built with donations from

the community.

“They went door to door in the community,” McNamara said. “We are hoping to fundraise about 25 percent of the cost this time, if the board approves it.”

He said the original pool cost about $250,000. Grants will be applied for to help fund the project, there will be a fundraiser and the balance would be paid by the village.

If the board approves the project it will be looking to start construction at the end of this year’s pool season, McNamara said.

Calls to Village President Jared Anderson and the pool committee were not immediately returned.

Koehl has shifted responsibilities within his administrative team since his first day on the job, which was July 14, 2014.

The administrators with the highest percentage increases either have new jobs or more responsibilities, and are being shifted to a salary that reflects market value, the superintendent said.

For instance, Liz Boyles was promoted from adminis-

trative assistant to assistant manager of Information Services, adding more responsibility and a 45 percent salary increase, from $41,491 to a market value of $60,000, Koehl said.

Executive director of Finance and Operations Elaine Colombo is receiving the largest dollar amount raise, from $101,499 to $125,000, a 23 percent increase, after taking over the operations department. She previously was the director of finance.

Koehl said several assistant principals’ salaries are being normalized to $58,900 to align with market value.

He also said three staff members are being promoted for their experience, knowledge and implementation of Common Core state standards in the district, which is a coveted skill to have.

SHOREWOOD – Restructuring within the Troy School District 30-C administration this year has led to significant salary changes, ranging from a 13 percent decrease to a 45 percent increase for individual administrators and support staff.

Total administrative salary costs are seeing a 6.29 percent increase in fiscal 2014-2015, according to district figures.

Total salary costs for administrative support staff are increasing 7.48 percent.

Superintendent Todd Koehl said many of the increases are because of administrators assuming additional responsibilities, and a desire to retain staff.

The salary changes were approved 6-1 by the district School Board during a special meeting Feb. 25, right after it approved a 4 percent raise for teachers in a new negotiated contract.

Board Member Terry McFadden was the lone dissenting vote.

“I’m against any increase of more than 5 percent,” he said, adding that he thought the increases were too much

for the community and taxpayers.

Koehl said the increases still fall under the district’s appropriations for salaries.

“The district stands behind these salaries because they represent the evolution of work in a complex organization,” Koehl said.

Among district administrators and support staff who didn’t experience a change in their job responsibilities, total salary costs increased 2.9 percent, with most staff members earning a 3 percent increase.

“This year was pretty easy with the teachers contract and administrative salaries,” Board President Mark Griglione said. “The administrators’ salaries are not out of line.”

The following Troy School District 30-C staff are among those receiving the largest percent increases from fiscal 2013-14 to fiscal 2014-15.

After Kay’s beloved Delaney passed away, she moved back to Lockport where she cared for her mother until her death. She was a talented artist who loved to paint and animals. Born: April 14, 1926; in Chicago, IL Died: Feb. 28, 2015; In Town Gordon A. Gillespie, beloved of the Lord, went home to heaven on February 28, 2015, at age 88.

Born in Chicago, on April 14, 1926, he attended Kelvyn Park High School, graduated from DePaul University, and proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946.

Best known as Gordie or Coach, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather to his family. A mentor to many, he would want you to remember how much he loved you all. He said often, that he was the lucky one to be a part of our lives, the privilege was his. There was never a day when he did not want to go to work. When you were in his presence, it was all about you and your life, never about himself. He was generous to a fault, a lover of people, a man of simple needs, he understood the meaning of true humility.

Gordie never truly retired, going to Ripon, Wisconsin, in 1996, where he continued to assume the role of head baseball coach, assist son, Bob, in basketball, and take the Ripon High School football team to its first ever state championship. Many lifelong friendships were formed there.

It would be remiss not to speak of his nearly eighty-year friendship with George Leddy (now deceased) and Pete Coorlas, who were known as “The Big Three”, and who met in grade school, played basketball on the Lloyd playground and at DePaul University, loved one another and each other’s families and, as Gordie said, “never had an argument.”

Preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Belle (nee Ross) Gillespie; wife, Emily; brother, Earl Gillespie; aunt and uncle, Howard and Helen Ammeson; cousin, Donald Ross; two step-sons; and one step-grandson.

She enjoyed music, dancing, cooking and spending time with family and friends. Amber was easy-going with a light heart and a free spirit. She is warmly remembered for her sense of humor, contagious laugh, captivating smile, tender accepting soul and the special love she had for her sons.

She will be missed by all who knew her. A young soul taken far too early now soars with a renewed spirit to a peaceful heaven.

She was born December 7, 1920, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, daughter of William and Irene Murich Booshak.

She married Anthony J. Mihelic, on October 16, 1941, he preceded her in death on April 16, 2005.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, Steve, and one sister, Anna.

Surviving are two daughters, Janis (Cal) Myers of Aurora and Jackie (Jack) Vasey of Evanston; one granddaughter, Jennifer (Steve) Aleckson of Sugar Grove; and two great-grandchildren, Charlie and Gracie Aleckson.

In her earlier years, Olga owned and operated a grocery store in Joliet, where she did everything from cashier, to bookkeeping and operating as the butcher. Later, she and her husband, Tony, owned a tavern in Lamont. In 1952, they moved to Bloomington, where they operated the Falstaff Distributorship known

as the Central Beverage Company for over 20 years. In the 1970’s and 1980’s, Olga worked as a realtor for Paul Ball and later for Ed Ingold.

She was a volunteer with St. Joseph Auxiliary in Bloomington for over 50 years. She was also a former Brownie Scout and Girl Scout leader in Bloomington. Olga was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Bloomington.

She enjoyed her needle-point, crossword puzzles, was a voracious reader and loved playing BINGO at Westminster Village.

She will be remembered by those who loved her by how she could light up the room with her lively conversation and fun-loving spirit.

Judge asked to delay medical marijuana permit in Kankakee

CHICAGO – A Cook County judge heard arguments Tuesday from a Chicago company that failed to win a permit to grow medical marijuana and then filed a lawsuit claiming the Illinois Department of Agriculture broke its own rules and is hiding behind a secretive process.

Judge Kathleen Kennedy is expected to rule Wednesday on a request for a temporary restraining order to halt the marijuana permit process in a region that covers Ford, Iroquois and Kankakee counties.

The plaintiff, PM Rx LLC, filed the complaint last week against the department, claiming the agency didn’t follow its own rules for licensing cultivation centers that will grow cannabis in the state’s pilot program.

PM Rx had applied for a license to grow marijuana in Kankakee.

The state said it was awarding the permit to Cresco Labs LLC, which also won cultivation permits in two other districts.

Attorney John Rooks said PM Rx needs a delay in order to find out more about how the department scored applicants.

State schools chief warns of ‘perfect storm’ for districts

SPRINGFIELD – As lawmakers consider revamping Illinois’ outdated school funding formula, the state superintendent warned Tuesday that more education cuts would create a “perfect storm,” putting low-income and minority students at risk.

1M-plus students set to take new standardized test

CHICAGO – More than a

million students are scheduled to take new standardized tests next week.

State Board of Education officials said Monday that thirdto eighth-graders and some high school students will take the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers assessment. They said it reflects the demands of new learning standards.

Chicago Public Schools officials initially said they’d opt out of giving the test to a majority of students. CPS changed course Monday, saying it would administer the test to the district’s 230,000 eligible students.

District CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett said there was the possibility of losing millions in funds otherwise.

Chicago’s retired Cardinal George admitted to hospital

CHICAGO – Chicago’s retired Cardinal Francis George has been admitted to the hospital for evaluation after he stopped treatment for kidney cancer more than a month ago.

The Archdiocese of Chicago said Tuesday that George was admitted Sunday to Loyola University Medical Center. Archdiocese officials said he will stay there several days for tests.

They didn’t say what prompted the hospital admission.

George said in January doctors ran out of treatment options and he was focusing on quality of life rather than a cure. He stopped receiving an experimental drug treatment in December because it wasn’t working.

Measles vaccination clinics to be held in Palatine

CHICAGO – The Cook County Department of Public Health has set up two vaccination clinics for people in the northwest suburbs who may have been exposed to measles.

The clinics will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at All Saints Lutheran Church in Palatine.

Health officials said people who were at LaRosita Laundromat on East Dundee Road in Palatine the morning of Feb. 16 and at the Vista Clinic on North Rand Road in Palatine on Feb. 19 may have been exposed. People who were at Northwest Community Resource Center in Palatine on Feb. 19 also may have been exposed.

NEW YORK –The U.S. has so much crude that it is running out of places to put it, and that could drive oil and gasoline prices even lower in the coming months.

For the past seven weeks, the United States has been producing and importing an average of 1 million more barrels of oil every day than it is consuming.

That extra crude is flowing into storage tanks, especially at the country’s main trading hub in Cushing, Oklahoma – pushing U.S. supplies to their highest point in at least 80 years, the Energy Department said last week.

If this keeps up, storage tanks could approach their operational limits by mid-April and send the price of crude – and probably gasoline, too – plummeting.

Petraeus, 62, will plead guilty to a misdemeanor count of unauthorized removal and retention of classified material. The agreement was filed Tuesday in court in Charlotte, where Paula Broadwell, the general’s biographer and former mistress, lives with her husband and children.

Netanyahu warns U.S. ‘bad deal’ would put Iran on nuclear path

By DEB RIECHMANN and ARON HELLER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – In a direct challenge to the White House, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stood before Congress on Tuesday and bluntly warned the U.S. that an emerging nuclear agreement with Iran “paves Iran’s path to the bomb.” President Barack Obama pushed back sternly, saying the U.S. never would sign such a deal and Netanyahu was offering no useful alternative.

In the U.S. spotlight for a day, the Israeli leader showed no uncertainty. “This is a bad deal. It is a very bad deal. We are better off without it,” he declared in an emotionally charged speech that was arranged by Republicans, aggravated his already-strained relations with Obama and gambled with the longstanding bipartisan congressional support for Israel.

Two weeks ahead of voting in his own re-election back home, Netanyahu took the po-

dium of the U.S. House, contending that any nuclear deal with Iran could threaten his nation’s survival.

In a tone of disbelief, he said that Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, “tweets that Israel must be annihilated – he tweets.”

Republicans loudly cheered Netanyahu in the packed chamber. Democrats were more restrained, frustrated with the effort to undercut Obama’s negotiations.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., did little to hide her unease and later issued a blistering statement criticizing what she called Netanyahu’s condescension.

At the White House, Obama said there was value in the current economic sanctions against Iran and also in the negotiations in Switzerland aimed at restraining Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

“Sanctions alone are not sufficient,” Obama said. “If Iran does not have some sense that sanctions will be removed, it will not have an interest in avoiding the path

that it’s currently on.”

The administration said there is no deal yet, but Netanyahu insists he is privy to what is being put forth.

“If the deal now being negotiated is accepted by Iran, that deal will not prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. It would all but guarantee that Iran gets those weapons – lots of them,” he declared. He acknowledged that any deal likely would include strict inspections, but he said “inspectors document violations; they don’t stop them.”

Obama declined to meet with Netanyahu during this visit. Vice President Joe Biden was on a trip to Central America, and so his seat as president of the Senate was filled by Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, the Senate president pro tempore.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State John Kerry held a threehour negotiating session with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Switzerland in hopes of completing an international framework pact later this month to curb Tehran’s nuclear program.

By JULIE PACE The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Hillary Rodham Clinton is facing a new set of questions about ethics and transparency – the sort that have dogged her and husband Bill for decades.

The latest disclosure, that Clinton used a personal email account while serving as secretary of state, comes on the cusp of her likely second bid for president. Combined with recent news about her family foundation raising money from foreign governments while she was at the State Department, it added fresh fuel Tuesday to the longstanding charge the Clintons play by their own rules.

“Does she believe that leadership means acting outside the law?” said Carly Fiorina, the former technology executive who is weighing a 2016

GOP presidential bid. “Does she believe that leadership can exist without transparency?”

Hillary Clinton’s Clinton aides were quick to dispute the idea anything was illegal or improper about her use of a personal email account for government work, noting that she was hardly the first secretary of state to do so. Meanwhile, her allies praise the work of the Clinton Foundation – and note it isn’t required to disclose its donors but does so anyway.

Still, for the Clintons, it’s difficult for complicated explanations about allegations to compete with the simplicity of political perception.

terms in the White House were sometimes accompanied by allegations of questionable business dealings and by ethics controversies, culminating in his 1998 impeachment for perjury and obstruction of justice. Hillary Clinton was caught up in some of them, including the Whitewater investigation into the couple’s real estate investments.

Officials at the Clinton Foundation did recently acknowledge an instance where they failed to seek State Department approval for a foreign government’s donation as required.

In the new matter, she provided the State Department with emails from her personal account last year when asked, but only she and the relevant members of her staff know if she turned over all of them.

“The presidency is ultimately about trust, and

whether it’s this latest series of ethical lapses that have come to light or the decades of secrecy surrounding the Clintons, it’s clear Hillary Clinton is someone with an awful lot to hide,” asserted Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus.

Clinton provided the emails to the State Department after the department asked several former secretaries, including Madeleine Albright, Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice, last year for records that should be preserved, said Department spokeswoman Marie Harf.

Harf said the agency already had the “vast majority” of Clinton’s emails, because they were sent to or came from department workers using official addresses. No classified information was sent or received over the email account, she said.

By ERICA WERNER and DAVID ESPO The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Bitterly admitting defeat, the Republican-controlled Congress sent legislation Tuesday to President Barack Obama that funds the Department of Homeland Security without any of the immigration-related concessions they demanded for months.

“Sanity is prevailing,” said Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., a former chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, before the House voted 257-167 in favor of the $40 billion spending bill, which Obama was expected to sign promptly. All 182 Democrats present voted for the bill, while it received only 75 Republican “yes” votes.

“I am glad that House Republicans finally came to their senses,” said Rep. Loretta Sanchez of California, a top Democrat on the Homeland Security Committee.

The outcome averted a partial agency shutdown which would have begun Friday at midnight. It was a major victory for Obama and the Democrats, and a wholesale retreat for Republicans, who have spent months railing against an “unconstitutional overreach” by Obama in extending deportation stays and work permits to millions of immigrants in this country illegally.

In the end Republicans who’d tried to use the DHS spending bill to undo Obama’s actions had little to show but weeks of gridlock and chaotic spectacle on Capitol Hill in the wake of assuming full control of Congress in the November midterm elections. The turmoil brought the Homeland Security Department to within hours of a partial shutdown last Friday before Congress passed a one-week extension.

On Tuesday morning, addressing an uncharacteristically subdued gathering of House Republicans, Speaker John Boehner indicated he was out of options.

WASHINGTON – A Justice Department investigation found sweeping patterns of racial bias within the Ferguson, Missouri, police department, with officers routinely discriminating against blacks by using excessive force, issuing petty citations and making baseless traffic stops, according to law enforcement officials familiar with its findings.

The report, to be released as soon as Wednesday, marks the culmination of a monthslong investigation into a police department that federal officials have described as troubled and commanded national attention after one of its officers shot and killed an unarmed black man, Michael Brown, 18, last summer.

It chronicles discriminatory practices across the city’s criminal justice system, detailing problems from initial encounters with patrol officers to treatment in the municipal court and jail. Federal law enforcement officials described its contents on condition of anonymity because

likely as whites to be searched during traffic stops, even though they were 26 percent less likely to be found carrying contraband, according to a summary of the findings.

The review also found that blacks were 68 percent less likely than others to have their cases dismissed by a municipal court judge. And from April to September of last year, 95 percent of people kept at the city jail for more than two days were black, it found.

Of the cases in which the police department documented the use of force, 88 percent involved blacks, and of the 14 dog bites for which racial information is available, all 14 victims were black.

Overall, African-Americans make up 67 percent of the population of Ferguson, about 10 miles north of downtown St. Louis. The police department has been criticized as racially imbalanced and not reflective of the community’s demographic makeup.

At the time of the shooting, just three of 53 officers were black, although the mayor has said he’s trying to create a more diverse police force.

As Nemtsov is buried, Russian opposition faces gloomy future

By LAURA MILLS and VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV The Associated Press MOSCOW – After paying their final tributes Tuesday to slain Kremlin critic Boris Nemtsov, many members of Russia’s beleaguered opposition are looking into the future with gloom.

The sadness and loss that drew thousands to Nemtsov’s funeral is unlikely to add vigor to the small and marginalized opposition, or dent the broad public support for President Vladimir Putin.

Many believe that his shooting death on a bridge near the Kremlin wouldn’t have been possible without official involvement, and that sends a chilling signal to government opponents, who fear it could herald a new, brutal era of reprisals.

Thousands of mourners and dignitaries filed past Nemtsov’s white-lined coffin, and many wept as they offered flowers.

“He was our ray of light.

With his help, I think Russia would have risen up and become a strong country,” said 80-year-old Valentina Gorbatova.

So many came that when the viewing ended after its scheduled four hours, a line still stretched for hundreds of yards outside the hall named for the Soviet-era dissident and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Andrei Sakharov.

Mourner Marsel Shamsudinov said he had come from Kazan, 450 miles east of Moscow, to show that

unlike the vast majority of Russians who watch nothing but state-run TV, there are people “who do think and see that the government system is unfair and that we need to change a lot in our country.”

But while feelings of anger and grief ran strong at the funeral, few believe that the opposition – fragmented and weakened after years of relentless crackdowns – could pose a serious challenge to Putin, who is supported by 85 percent of Russians, according to recent polls.

Kremlin critics said the virulent nationalist propaganda on state TV, which cast the 55-year-old Nemtsov and other liberals as Western stooges, helped prepare the ground for his killing on Friday night.

Nemtsov had been a deputy prime minister under Russia’s first elected president, Boris Yeltsin, who touted him as his likely successor before opting instead for Putin.

Although his influence in mainstream politics vanished, Nemtsov had remained one of Putin’s most vehement critics. In a radio interview a few hours before his death, he denounced the president for his “mad, aggressive” policies in Ukraine.

Putin dubbed Nemtsov’s killing a “provocation,” and nationwide TV networks quickly picked up the theme, blaming Western intelligence agencies, Ukrainian agents or even the opposition. They focused heavily on

a 23-year-old Ukrainian model who was with Nemtsov when he was slain, with some suggesting their relationship could be a motive.

The nation’s top investigative agency echoed Putin’s comments, saying it was looking into whether Nemtsov had been a “sacrificial victim” to destabilize Russia.

It said it was also investigating whether Islamic extremism, the Ukraine conflict and Nemtsov’s personal life were possible motives.

No suspects have been arrested. Divers searched for the gun in the Moscow River under the bridge where Nemtsov was killed by four shots in the back.

The area is always packed with uniformed and plainclothes agents and security cameras, making it hard for any attacker to go unnoticed.

Kremlin critics say Nemtsov, like other prominent opposition figures, was under close surveillance, implying possible official involvement in the assassination.

Among those mourning Nemtsov were U.S. Ambassador John Tefft; Russian Deputy Prime Ministers Sergei Prikhodko and Arkady Dvorkovich; tycoon Mikhail Prokhorov, the owner of the Brooklyn Nets who ran against Putin in 2012; and Yeltsin’s widow, Naina.

Former Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov, who has joined the opposition, also was there, as was Nadezhda Tolokonnikova of the dissident punk group Pussy Riot.

BAGHDAD – Iranian-backed Shiite militias and Sunni tribes have joined Iraq’s military in a major operation to retake Saddam Hussein’s hometown from the Islamic State group, while the U.S.-led coalition has remained on the sidelines.

The campaign for Tikrit is a dress rehearsal for the real contest: The fight to recapture Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city and the extremists’ biggest stronghold. But can a large-scale ground offensive alone succeed, without U.S.led air support?

The Tikrit operation is aimed at stopping Islamic State fighters from closing in on Samarra, a Shiite holy city just to the south that tens of thousands of Shiite militiamen rushed to defend during the extremists’ blitz across northern Iraq last June.

One of the biggest campaigns in the heart of militant-controlled Iraq, the battle for Tikrit involves a complex mix of several Iraqi military brigades and thousands of Shiite militiamen and Sunni tribal fighters. Directing the offensive with the aid of dozens of Iranian military advisers is a powerful Iranian general, Ghasem Soleimani, commander of the elite Revolutionary Guard’s Quds Force.

Glaringly absent are the U.S.-led coalition forces whose air campaign since last summer has nearly halted the Islamic State rampage across Iraq. Pentagon spokesman Army Col. Steve Warren said this week that the U.S. is not providing air power in the Tikrit operation “simply because the Iraqis haven’t requested us to.”

Liberating the city without the backing of coalition airstrikes will put Iraq’s security forces to the ultimate battle-readiness test since any operation to recapture Iraq’s densely-populated cities – including Mosul and Fallujah – will have to rely almost entirely on ground forces to minimize civilian casualties.

However, more of a concern for the U.S.-led coalition is Iran’s prominent role in the fight against the Islamic State militants. Iran has long been influential in Iraq, but never so much so as over the past year, when the Iraqi military collapsed in the face of the Sunni extremists’ onslaught.

Iraqi officials have noted Iran’s quick response to their urgent requests for weapons and frontline assistance even as they accuse the coalition of falling short on commitments on the ground.

Embedding coalition advisers and forward air controllers – the officers who call in airstrikes – with Iraqi military units presents a twofold challenge. Frontline positions would put their lives in danger at a time when risk aversion is at its peak. But it also raises the potential for coalition forces and Iranian soldiers to share a battlefield, a politically untenable prospect for the U.S. given the uncertain future of ongoing nuclear talks with Tehran.

However, the U.S.-led mission has hit a roadblock in its efforts to support the Iraqi government. Both the Iraqi and U.S. government agree that airstrikes have pushed the militants back and the group has struggled to gain territory since airstrikes began. But there will come a point where airstrikes alone will not be enough.

Scott Reeder MADISON, Wis. – It’s not every day I interview someone dressed in nothing but bright-red long johns and a medieval Viking helmet standing in the middle of a state capitol rotunda.

But that’s what I found myself doing last week when reporting at the Wisconsin State Capitol.

That statehouse was filled with union angst as hundreds, perhaps thousands, of activists protested a measure to make Wisconsin a right-to-work state.

As Wisconsin senators debated the measure, protesters misbehaved.

They hollered and screamed in the rotunda. Some waved signs and placards laden with obscenities.

Scores were hauled out of the Senate gallery by state troopers after disrupting the proceedings.

So much for being staid Midwesterners.

I’ve covered the Illinois Statehouse for 15 years and, before that, the Nevada Legislature. I’ve never witnessed anything under a dome quite like what I saw in Madison this past week.

My only thought after observing the shenanigans: They sure aren’t doing themselves any favors.

After all, it’s kind of hard to have a serious public policy conversation with someone clad only in long johns.

As I was standing in line to enter the Senate gallery, the fellow behind me explained that Scott Walker engages in mind control and a group called “ALEC” had people locked up for being delusional.

The woman in front of me in line explained to me that Walker,

a Baptist preacher’s son, couldn’t be a Christian because of his opposition to some of organized labor’s positions and Jesus’ commandment to love one another.

I asked the woman if she loved Walker.

There was a long pause and then she sputtered, “Just a little bit.”

The problem with sanctimony is that it indicts those pointing the finger.

Free speech is a precious thing. It can be used effectively or not particularly well.

In fact, one could argue the folks demonstrating in Madison these past four years are among the people most responsible for Walker’s rise to national political prominence.

The rascals on the left alienated themselves from the majority of voters.

After all, a hero needs a villain.

David had Goliath.

Batman had Joker.

Hamilton had Burr.

And Scott Walker?

Well, he has the unions.

As union demonstrations spiraled out of control, rank-and-file voters found themselves identifying more with Walker.

They couldn’t bring themselves to support what they saw as an increasingly radical labor movement.

During the last four years, Walker has won three races for governor, including a recall pushed by the unions.

I asked the fellow in long underwear why Walker keeps winning, and his answer was telling: “I have no idea.”

Maybe he ought to look in the mirror.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Safe Schools program deserves funding To the Editor:

This year marks an important anniversary for our nation of 150 years since the end of the Civil War and untimely death of Abraham Lincoln, the president who led us through that historic period. Regional superintendents of schools also look to 1865 as the start of a long legacy of serving Illinois schools, a job that is as important today as it was in Lincoln’s time.

Since our creation as county superintendents in 1865, our makeup, roles and duties have changed dramatically.

From the beginning, we have served as the administrative backbone for our school system. We have

been there to support school districts and help the state superintendent of schools through difficult decisions around massive school consolidations. Today, we are going through another consolidation that will bring our numbers to 35 Regional Offices of Education and three Intermediate Service Centers serving every Illinois county.

We will do more with less, and we will provide schools the high-quality service they have come to expect through our commitment to three tenets: safety, support and success.

We urge the governor and lawmakers to rethink a proposed elimination of funding for the Regional Safe Schools program that

helps turn around the lives of thousands of students removed from the classroom for disruption. Where will these students go, and what will educators do, without this safety net?

As we join with other school administration organizations to support the Vision 20/20 push for a brighter future for Illinois schools from the inside, regional superintendents of schools are an important part of the solution for the problems that must be addressed now. At 150, we are energized and prepared for the work ahead.

JOLIET – Minooka knew the pressure was coming from Joliet West in Tuesday night’s second semifinal at the Class 4A Joliet West Regional.

With freshman point guard Keegan Graebner doing much of the ballhandling, assisted by sophomore Jon Butler, the Indians handled the heat en route to a 61-45 victory over West.

Minooka’s reward is a date Friday night with Neuqua Valley, the No. 1 seed in the Class 4A Bolingbrook Sectional, in the regional final. Neuqua destroyed Oswego East, 89-43, in the other semifinal.

Junior forward Joe Butler was overpowering for the eighth-seeded Indians (15-15).

He hit 11 of 12 shots, including all three 3-pointers, and finished with 32 points to go with 11 rebounds.

Larry Roberts shot Minooka into an early lead and capped a 10-foot runner along the baseline to end the first quarter with Minooka on top, 12-6. Roberts finished with 17 points and hit 3 of 5 from 3-point range. His basket to end the first quarter ignited a 14-0 run as the Indians blew out to a 24-6 lead.

“Larry has done that all year for us,” Minooka coach Scott Tanaka said. “But Keegan Graebner also was huge.

For a freshman point guard, he is amazing. And, we have the big man [muscular Blake Parzych] who is going to rebound every 50-50 ball.

“It’s nice when you work on things at the beginning of the year and you hope it comes together by tournament time.

It’s nice when kids believe in the system and then they see it work.”

“They came out and knocked us around, and we had no answer,” Joliet West coach Nick DiForti said. “We missed a lot of layups in the first quarter. I guess the positive was we got a lot of layups in the first quarter.

“When you get down like we did, it’s hard to come back against a good team. It would

Minooka shot at a .583 clip on 21 of 36, including 6 of 9 from 3-point range, and had control of the boards early on.

The Tigers came on strong in the second half and evened the rebounding battle at 30 apiece.

“We’ve been playing young guys all year, but we really have a nice sold group of seniors who were our glue,” DiForti said. “We had a sophomore [Trevian Bell, West’s scoring leader with 14 points] who got most of the headlines, but they never once said anything. That can be a tough thing for a 17-year-old.”

Marks continues to make mark at Boise St. VIEWS Dick Goss Derrick Marks has been ranked among the top 50 NBA draft prospects for 2015 by at least one service.

With two rounds in the draft, that indicates the Plainfield Central graduate could be selected somewhere along the way. Based on what he has been doing this season at Boise State, the 6-foot-3 senior guard certainly is worth a good look from NBA teams.

After Saturday night’s 56-46 victory at San Diego State, the Broncos (22-7, 12-4) are beginning to appear in the 68-team NCAA Tournament fields that bracketologists have been producing for a while now. With the victory, Boise State moved into a tie with San Diego State for the Mountain West Conference lead and holds the tiebreaker entering this final week of the regular season by virtue of having swept the Aztecs.

Marks leads the Mountain West in scoring at 22.3 points a game. Overall, he is averaging 31.7 minutes, 20 points, 3.6 rebounds, three assists and 1.8 steals.

Last week, he scored 30 points against New Mexico, his NCAA Division I-leading sixth game of the season with 30 or more points. He added 18 against San Diego State to help snap the Aztecs’ 29-game home winning streak.

All of that helped Marks earn his fourth Mountain West Player of the Week award of the season and eighth of his career. He is the first Mountain West player since BYU’s Jimmer Fredette to win three such weekly awards in multiple seasons.

Marks is shooting 50.8 percent from the field, 477 from 3-point range (61 of 128) and .792 from the free-throw line (80 of 101). His 3-point percentage is 18th best in the land; and among the top 20, he easily has the most attempts and most 3s.

I discussed Marks recently with Plainfield Central coach Steve Lamberti. He said the big thing Marks had to do when he

He was so good at getting into the lane and scoring in close in high school, when he also was an excellent free-throw shooter, he never really became a shooter.

To his credit, through hard work, he has added that element to his game at Boise State. He has done so much for the Broncos – who lost their other big gun, Anthony Drmic, to injury seven games into the season – that he should be in the discussion for Mountain West Player of the Year and for mention somewhere on the various All-America teams.

Meanwhile, here’s hoping Boise State finishes off the regular season with victories over San Jose State and Fresno State, has a positive Mountain West Conference Tournament and makes some noise in the NCAA Tournament. College basketball fans nationwide

should get a chance to see what this kid from Plainfield Central can do.

HOLDING COURT

• Richaun Holmes (Lockport), a 6-foot-8 senior forward, leads Bowling Green (19-8, 11-5 in Mid-American Conference) in scoring at 14.4 points a game, rebounding at eight and blocked shots at 2.7.

He also averages 0.9 assists and is shooting .561 from the floor, .400 from 3-point range (14 of 35) and .701 from the free-throw line (89 of 127). He is a candidate to play somewhere after college – overseas if not in the NBA. • Holmes’ teammate at Lockport, Eastern Michigan 6-foot-7 senior forward Karrington Ward, also has the potential to play beyond college.

He is averaging 12.6 points (17.2 over the last six games), 6.4 rebounds, 1.4 blocks and 1.3 rebounds for the Eagles

(17-12, 6-10 in the MAC). He is shooting .416 from the floor, .317 from 3-point range and 710 from the free-throw line (71 of 100).

• Brian Bennett (Plainfield East), a 6-foot-9 junior forward, is having a solid season at Cal Poly (13-14, 6-9 in Big West). He is averaging 30.2 minutes, 11.1 points, 6.4 rebounds and 0.9 assists, and he is shooting .502 from the field and .529 from the free-throw line.

• Ben Moore (Bolingbrook), a 6-foot-8 sophomore forward, is averaging 23.5 minutes, 7.2 points and five rebounds for a likely NCAA Tournament-bound SMU (23-6, 14-3 in American Athletic Conference). He is shooting .452 from the floor and .673 from the free-throw line (68 of 101).

• Morgan Tuck (Bolingbrook) will play for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Women’s Tournament, as UConn (29-1,

18-0 in American Athletic Conference) continues to roll.

A 6-foot-2 sophomore forward, Tuck averages 24.2 minutes, 13.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 0.8 steals. She is shooting .578 from the field and .754 from the foul line.

Tuck’s high school teammate, 5-foot-7 senior guard Ariel Massengale, also likely also is headed to the NCAA Women’s Tournament with Tennessee (25-4, 15-1 in Southeastern Conference). In 28 games, she is averaging 29.3 minutes, 11.4 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 0.8 steals.

This represents a strong comeback season for Massengale, who missed the last 16 games last season with a facial injury and had offseason surgery on her right knee. She was averaging 12.5 points and 5.8 assists when she was injured.

“We knew that Lockport was going to try to hold the ball against us and slow the game,” Rost said. “We came out kind of rusty in the first half because it’s tough just playing against yourselves for 10 days. But in the second half, we decided to turn the pressure up. We don’t

really care who scores – we just want to get the ball to the hoop, and whatever we get – a 3 or a layup – we’ll take it. No one on this team has an ego.”

The Celtics displayed balance as six players scored between 11 and six points. Troy Howat led the way with 11 points, while Tyler Pygon had nine points and Miles Boykin (seven rebounds) and Jack Brody (six rebounds) added

eight points apiece.

Thirteenth-seeded Lockport was led by 10 points from Matt Smietanski, who had been on the sophomore team.

Senior Ralph Blakney added four points, while seniors Anthony Grybauskas, Gehrig Hollatz and Kyle Gallagher scored three points apiece.

The game marked an end of an era for the Porters with Thompson’s retirement after a record 33 seasons with the program, which included the last 16 as head coach.

“Providence is athletic and has players with great skill level,” Thompson said. “Their football players give them an edge physically, which makes them even stronger mentally and makes the other guys tougher to handle. Defensively, they’re really tough to score on.

“It was an honor and a privilege to work at Lockport Township. Bob Allen gave me the opportunity to be a cross country coach and freshman basketball coach. When I sit down and think about it, I’ve really been blessed to follow behind coaches Basarich, Bolattino and Gura to uphold Lockport basketball. It was just an honor to have that opportunity.”

By TIM CRONIN Shaw Media Correspondent ROMEOVILLE – “I don’t know what to say,” Joliet Central boys basketball coach Jeff Corcoran said in the seconds after the Steelmen scored a 4542 victory Tuesday over Sandburg in their Class 4A regional semifinal at Romeoville High School.

That was understandable.

The 10th-seeded Eagles (10-17) had posted a pair of victories over seventh-seeded Joliet Central (15-12) in their two conference games, winning by 10 and 11 points.

There was little different

the first three quarters. Joliet Central scored the game’s first basket, then fell behind and stayed behind until regaining the lead on Darius Stokes’ 3-pointer with 6:50 remaining in the fourth. Sandburg led by as many as 10 points, at 23-13, late in the first half.

But the Steelmen persevered and succeeded behind a 13-8 margin in the fourth quarter, the only one in which they held 6-foot-7 center Tommy Demogerontas – Sandburg’s inside ace – scoreless. He scored 17 points, all in the first 24 minutes.

Their reward is a clash with second-seeded Boling-

brook (20-6) in Friday’s regional final.

“At the start of the season, we had goals, and this is the only one left,” Corcoran said of gaining a regional crown.

The possibility looked unlikely halfway through the third quarter; but Central outscored Sandburg, 20-11, from that point, beginning with Kewon Ware’s 3-pointer. The Steelmen never were less than two points away from then on; and when Stokes drilled his 3-pointer, they never trailed again.

“We set that play up for him,” Taquan Sims said.

It was on the shoulders of

Sims, however, that the Steelmen rode to the finish. The only player in double figures for Central, he scored six of his 17 points in the final quarter, four of them coming from the free-throw line. And that was after he missed a layup as the third quarter ended.

“I shook his hand and said, ‘Here comes our run,’ ” Corcoran said.

And it arrived. Aside from Stokes, Sims had the only Central field goal of the quarter, a drive to the basket with 1:25 to play for a 43-39 lead. But the free throws he hit before that set up what turned out to be the winning basket.

The Steelmen hardly were perfect. Sandburg enjoyed a 3321 rebounding advantage and held Central to 34.1 shooting.

A similar combination against Bolingbrook could mean a joyless ride home.

“Friday night, we can’t have that,” Corcoran said.

Sims, a junior, is confident – as only an underclassman could be.

“The key is our defense,” Sims said. “We have to minimize the backdoor cuts.”

And Corcoran was, perhaps, thinking of a hundred other things on his way out the door. But the Steelmen, improbably, have that chance.

YORKVILLE – Tim Trendel was very concerned about the scenario that faced his Providence boys basketball team as it prepared to take on Lockport in Tuesday’s Class 4A Yorkville Regional semifinals.

After all, the Celtics hadn’t played since winning the Chicago Catholic League tournament over a week ago, while the Porters figured to be fired up to try to keep the coaching career of veteran Lawrence Thompson Jr. going for at least a few more days.

However, a 14-3 opening quarter helped ease Trendel’s mind, and a 10-0 run that stretched between the third and fourth quarters removed all doubts as Providence captured a 51-27 victory over Lockport.

The fourth-seeded Celtics (209), who have won nine straight and hit the 20-win mark for the first time in 10 years, advance to Friday’s regional final against the winner of Wednesday’s semifinals between Oswego and the host Foxes.

“I’ve been coaching for about 15 years and been in some big games as an assistant; but this was the most ner-

vous that I’ve ever been, since everything was right for the upset,” Trendel said. “That’s a good basketball team, and they’re really well-coached.

It’s too bad for the game, since we’re losing a good coach in coach Thompson.

“So you had a good team with a game plan that we had played once already, and we had 10 days off. Also, their coach is leaving, and you could see that his kids loved playing for him, so it was a trap game. But one of the things that’s kind of neat about our team is that it can hurt you in so many ways.

We can score, and tonight it was our defense that created our offense. We created some turnovers, and that led to some fast-break points.”

The Celtics scored the first seven points and expanded their lead to 11 points when Anthony DiNardi (seven points) hit a rebound basket as the first quarter ended. The Porters (9-17) made one field goal and turned the ball over five times in the opening quarter.

Providence led, 18-7, at halftime and was still only ahead, 28-18, late in the third quarter but used a decisive 10-0 run to break the game open. Jake

Bolingbrook ends Romeoville’s season

By JEFF De GRAW Shaw Media Correspondent ROMEOVILLE – It was a battle of the Valley View District schools Tuesday, but it was the first time since the 2005-06 season that the Bolingbrook and Romeoville boys basketball teams have met in the postseason.

The Class 4A Romeoville semifinal had the same outcome as the one nine years ago – a Bolingbrook victory, this time, 53-39.

The Raiders will battle Joliet Central, which beat Sandburg, 45-42, in the other

semifinal, in Friday’s regional final.

The Raiders used an 8-2 run during a 1:40 span in the middle of the third quarter to get a 13-point lead at 37-24, and they never looked back.

Bolingbrook had a 41-26 lead going into the fourth quarter.

“We didn’t play very well,” Raiders coach Rob Brost said.

“You don’t get much for style points; and this is the time of year, you just want to survive and move on.”

Romeoville hung around for the first half and had a 7-6 lead with three minutes to go in the first quarter.

But Brodic Thomas and Prentiss Nixon each hit two 3-pointers to give Bolingbrook a 17-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Spartans cut the lead to five at 21-16 with 3:41 to go before half, but a 3-pointer by Darick Anderson and a crucial steal and basket by Devon Sams put the Raiders up, 2718, at the half.

“We missed some free throws and a couple of layups in that second quarter, or it would have been really close,” Romeoville coach Marc Howard said. “Then we had that lapse in the third quarter, and

The five-time CCAC Player of the Week finished the season as the leading scorer in NAIA Division II with a 24-point average while ranking second in the nation in offensive rebounding (4.9) and 13th in total rebounding (10.3).

The senior, who was named a Capital One Academic All-American for the third time in her career earlier this month, set NAIA Division II records for most free throws made in a season (255) and career (702). She also scored a school season-record 720 points.

Ray and Ekhomu earned All-CCAC honorable mention.

Playing in all 31 games, Ray was the third-most accurate 3-point shooter in NAIA Division II, hitting .453 from behind the arc. She averaged 9.8 points with a 1.4 assist/turnover ratio.

By TOM WITHERS The Associated Press GOODYEAR, Ariz. – With large, glowing red numbers, the timer on the center-field wall at Goodyear Ballpark ticked down Tuesday, counting off seconds and ushering in change.

Baseball, the timeless game of endless summers, went on the clock.

Major League Baseball introduced its new pace of play initiatives during five exhibition games in Arizona and Florida. As expected, there were a few minor glitches as players, managers, umpires and fans adjusted to the “rules” designed to make games shorter, more appealing to TV viewers and, perhaps, lure the next generation of fans to a sport fighting for attention.

On this opening day, baseball had a slightly different look.

“I’ve never worked a game in the history of baseball that has a countdown clock,” said umpire Dan Iassogna, who kept an eye on second base as the Pittsburgh Pirates and Toronto Blue Jays played in Dunedin, Florida. “That was a little different.”

Under the pace of play provisions, hitters are required to keep one foot in the batter’s box after taking a pitch. Not everyone seemed to get the memo.

New York Yankees leadoff hitter Jacoby Ellsbury took the first pitch of the game – and this spring, in fact – from Philadelphia’s David Buchanan and immediately stepped outside the white-chalked line, maintaining his routine.

MLB is using the spring training schedule and regular-season games in April to break everyone in. But starting May 1, offenders will face discipline – most likely fines.

Along with keeping batters close to the plate, pitchers are required to have their warmup tosses completed before the clock – set at 2:25 for regionally televised games and 2:45 for national broadcasts – is down to 30 seconds and the batter must be ready by the time the clock reaches 5 seconds.

Two clocks were installed at all ballparks throughout the Cactus and Grapefruit Leagues, and for the most part the time pieces went unno-

ticed. Players hustled on and off the field between innings, most of them seemingly unaware they were being timed.

“I tried not to pay attention to it,” said San Francisco ace Madison Bumgarner, last year’s World Series MVP. “It’s going to be that way during the season. I didn’t pay attention. I can usually be ready.”

In a few instances, hitters caught themselves about to drift outside the dirt near home plate and made sure they kept at least a cleat on the edge of the box.

“I reminded a lot of guys today, ‘Oh, you can’t do that.

You do that and we’re going to write you up for that. You can’t do that,’ ” said umpire James Hoye, who called balls and strikes for the Pirates and Blue Jays. “They’d laugh and say,

‘Oh, sorry.’”

By the way, it took 3 hours, 17 minutes for Pittsburgh to beat Toronto, 8-7. The average MLB gametime in the regular season last year was 3:02.

Ellsbury was given the benefit of the doubt for his misstep. He won’t be as lucky in the months ahead. On Day One, crew chief Tom Hallion and his colleagues weren’t enforcing anything.

“He’s already got enough on his mind, the first pitch of spring training, and now he’s got to remember to stay in the box,” said Hallion, who was at first for the opener. “It’s a work in progress. It’s the first game, and we’ll go from here. It’s going to take some work. It’s a change for everybody. It’s not going to get fixed on the first day.”

One of the main reasons carnivores love meat is because of its depth of flavor. And the easiest way to magnify that flavor is to brown the meat.

For those of you into science, this is called the Maillard reaction, after the French chemist who first described it in 1912. But there’s also another – and equally delicious – reason to brown meat.

As meat browns, it gives off juices that concentrate in the bottom of the pan as little brown bits. Those flavorful brown bits don’t need to be lost. They are easily reconstituted with liquid after the meat has finished browning.

And just that quickly, you have the base of a deeply tasty sauce. All of which is to say, if you like big, meaty flavors, you’ll want to master how to make pan sauces. The good news is that it’s easy.

If you’ve never made a pan sauce, this recipe for steak au poivre is a great way to get started. A French classic, steak au poivre is steak that is crusted with cracked peppercorns, then seared and served with a quick pan sauce.

Master the art of deglazing a pan with steak au poivre Steak Au Poivre

Start to finish: 35 minutes Servings: 4 3 tablespoons whole black peppercorns Four ¾-inch-thick beef strip steaks (about 8 ounces each) 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, plus extra Kosher salt 2 tablespoons minced shallots ½ cup red wine 1 cup beef stock ½ cup heavy cream 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon cognac Chopped fresh parsley or chives, to garnish Using a mortar and pestle, coarsely crush the peppercorns. If you don’t have a mortar and pestle, you can use the bottom of a cast-iron skillet to crush them on a cutting board, or place them in a zip-close plastic bag and crush them with a rolling pin. Spread the crushed peppercorns evenly on a plate large enough to accommodate your steaks.

Pat the steaks dry, then brush each with a bit of oil on both sides. One at a time, gently press each steak into the

peppercorns to coat both sides. Season the steaks on both sides with salt.

In a large skillet over medium-high, heat the 2 tablespoons of oil. When the oil is hot, reduce the heat to medium, add the steaks and cook for 4 minutes per side for medium-rare. Transfer the steaks to a plate, cover loosely with foil and let rest while making the pan sauce.

Return the skillet to the heat and add the shallots. Cook over medium heat, stirring, for 1 minute. Add the wine, bring to a boil and simmer, scraping up the browned bits from the bottom of the pan, until reduced by three-quarters.

Add the stock and cream, bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer.

Simmer until the sauce thickens, about 10 minutes.

Add the juices from the plate of resting meat, then whisk in the mustard and cognac. Season with salt.

Transfer the steaks to serving plates, spoon some of the sauce over each, then garnish with chopped parsley or chives.

Nutrition information per serving: 490 calories; 220 calories from fat (45 percent of total calories); 24 g fat (10 g saturated; 1 g trans fats); 165 mg cholesterol; 8 g carbohydrate; 2 g fiber; 2 g sugar; 55 g protein; 560 mg sodium.

The first thing to do when making a pan sauce is to pat the meat dry. Doesn’t matter if you’re cooking beef, lamb, pork or chicken. Grab some paper towels and pat the meat dry. And stick with tender cuts, such as steaks and cutlets. Next, season the meat well with salt and pepper just before putting it in the pan. Then you brown it in fat over medium-high heat until it’s nicely colored and cooked to the doneness you desire. Remove the meat from the pan, transfer it to a plate, cover it loosely with foil and let it rest to ensure the meat’s moistness.

Now you make the pan sauce. If I have some shallots on hand, I’ll chop them and toss them into the pan and brown them for a minute. If not, I’ll pour off most of the fat, then move on to the next step – adding liquid. It can be wine, stock, water, cream or a combo. Whatever you go with, add it and bring it to a boil.

As the liquid boils, the key is to scrape up the brown bits stuck to the bottom of the pan. This process is known as deglazing the pan. Once the pan is deglazed, you lower the heat so the sauce just simmers. Next, pour in any juices from the meat that have drained onto the plate where it is resting.

In this auction, North bid five spades, and South boldly raised himself to six spades.

I think South should have passed over five clubs, but when West rebid five hearts and North passed (assuming he did), it would have been reasonable for him to compete with five spades.

West led his heart ace. Then, judging that South would not have bid six spades with two low hearts in his hand, West did brilliantly to shift to a club.

Now declarer had to decide on the trump split. If it were 2-2, he could draw trumps ending in the dummy and run the clubs. But South felt that, given West’s bidding, 1-3 was more likely than 2-2.

Declarer, after winning the second trick in the dummy, cashed the spade ace, then played high clubs, discarding diamonds from his hand. When East ruffed the fourth club, South overruffed, led a low spade to dummy’s nine, drawing East’s remaining trump, and claimed.

Dear Doctor K: A child in my son’s class has “fifth disease.” What is this? Is it contagious? What can I do to prevent my son from catching it?

Dear Reader: Fifth disease, also known as erythema infectiosum, is a common viral infection among school-aged children. It is caused by a virus called parvovirus B19.

Fifth disease usually is a mild illness. Some people who are infected with the virus may never realize they have it. When symptoms do occur, they may include a stuffy nose, runny nose, slight fever, or body aches, headache, nausea, diarrhea and fatigue. These symptoms pass after three or four days.

In children with a new infection by the virus, these symptoms are followed by a bright red “slapped cheek” rash. The child’s cheeks are bright red. The skin around the child’s mouth is unusually pale -- which makes the red cheeks look even redder. I’ve put a photo of this rash on my website, AskDoctorK.com.

The slapped cheek rash doesn’t appear until an infected person is no longer contagious. The rash on the cheeks is followed by a lacy, flat rash that appears on the arms, legs, trunk and buttocks.

It may itch. Fifth disease usually goes away within three weeks.

The rash, however, may occasionally last for months. Sometimes it goes away, but then comes back when the child is under emotional stress, exercises, or is exposed to a sudden change in temperature (like moving between a warm home and a frigid outdoors in winter).

Fifth disease spreads through direct contact with fluids or mucus from the nose or mouth of an infected person. Your child may encounter the

Dear Abby: I was recently told by a friend that my husband had sent her texts of an inappropriate and sexual nature. My husband didn’t deny that he sent them and refused to tell me what he sent.

This woman is envious of my husband and jealous of our relationship. She often comments about how she’d love to have a man like mine, etc. My concern is, he admits he texted her, but I don’t understand why. My intuition tells me she told me the truth, but I want to trust my husband.
