LOCKPORT – The board president for Fairmont School District 89 said in a statement Wednesday that a preliminary investigation into district credit card issues showed no evidence of wrongdoing from anyone associated with the district.

The investigation that board President Katie Ulmer said was conducted by the board’s new attorneys came to a similar conclusion, Superintendent Sonya Whitaker stated at a board meeting in February.

Ulmer made the statement about the investigation at Wednesday’s special meeting, where the board approved reinstating Whitaker as the contact person for the credit cards and then removing the freeze on them.

Both proposals passed, 4-1, with board Vice President Joseph Ryan voting against them. Board members Jeremy Burns and Charles Travis were absent.

On Feb. 11, the board approved freezing all district-issued credit cards for what Ulmer alleged was misuse but did not explain further about it.

At the Feb. 17 meeting, Whitaker – who was not at the Feb. 11 meeting – said

there was no report of alleged misuse of district credit cards.

She said on Feb. 9 she was made aware a staff member’s card was compromised, and this was reported to the credit card company.

Ulmer said in her statement Wednesday that on Feb. 9 Principal ZaRita Beal notified Whitaker of fraudulent purchases made on her district credit card in Texas, and this caused the board to be concerned.

She said the board took action to freeze all district credit cards.

A preliminary investigation was conducted, and the results showed no evidence of wrongdoing by any person associated with the district, she said.

aschier@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Will County Health Department immunization clinics have moved to a new location at the agency’s public health complex in southeast Joliet.

The new address for the Walk-In Immunization Clinic and the Will County Travel Immunization Clinic is 501 Ella Ave., Joliet. The clinics were previously across the parking lot at the Will County Community Health Center, 1106 Neal Ave. “It is significantly larger,” department spokesman Vic Reato said of the new space.

Health department immunization clinics accept Medicaid, Medicare, private pay and some forms of insurance, according to a department news release.

Ryan and board member Joseph Dalpiaz were the only ones to vote against both proposals.

Whitaker said the conference registration fee is about $980 a person.

Board member Richard Myers said board members should attend the conference.

“You can’t learn anything sitting here at this table, this arguing among each other all the time. You need to go to the convention, go to the workshops and see how things are conducted,” he said.

Board meetings in the past several months have been contentious, especially between Ulmer and Ryan, who were seated away from each other at Wednesday’s meeting.

D-86 SELECTS SUPERINTENDENT Rouse approved for three-year contract with $195K annual base salary

JOLIET – After a months-long, extensive nationwide search, Theresa Rouse has been selected as Joliet Public Schools District 86’s new superintendent.

The district’s Board of School Inspectors on Wednesday night approved a three-year contract for Rouse with a $195,000 annual base salary.

Board members spent about 25 minutes in executive session before they emerged to approve Rouse’s employment contract.

Rouse, who is the superintendent of King City Union School District in California, will replace the district’s current superintendent, Charles Coleman. He announced plans last year to retire July 1.

“I’m very excited and thrilled to be joining the team,” Rouse said during a phone interview from California after the meeting.

Rouse said “Joliet really rose to the top” Theresa in her search for jobs Rouse this fall because of the programs the district offers. She noted its music program and the district’s focus on alternative learning through the Thompson Center.

Rouse, who grew up Charles in Indiana but has lived Coleman in California since 1996, said she eyed Joliet as a possible career move because of its close location to her family in Indiana.

Rouse said although King City is a smaller district, the demographics are similar to Joliet in that most students come from low-income households. At the same time, nearly all students at King City are Hispanic, while 83 percent of District 86 students are Hispanic or African-American.

“We’re a smaller microcosm of [Joliet District 86],” Rouse said.

Rouse said she wants to build upon “all the good things that are already happening” within the district.

Board President Gwendolyn Ulmer said Rouse, who worked five years with the Santa Cruz County Office of Education, was selected because of her strength in instruction and curriculum.

Ulmer said she and board inspector Deborah Ziech conducted a site visit to King City Union School District in

February to observe Rouse on the job and meet with the community and immediate co-workers. Ulmer said she was “pleased with what she saw.”

She described Rouse as a “bright personality” who will help build connections between District 86 and the community.

Since last fall, Ray and Associates has assisted District 86 with finding the next superintendent by launching a nationwide search.

District officials agreed to pay $18,000 as a base fee to Ray and Associates, according to the company’s contract that was approved last fall. The fee is to be paid in three installments, with the final payment due the month the new superintendent officially is hired.

Rouse was chosen from a total of 59 applicants.

Claims disputed between Daniels, board

aschier@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The resignation and settlement agreement with former Joliet Junior College President Debra Daniels approved Tuesday by the school’s board acknowledges disputed claims between the school and its ex-leader.

The agreement, which received a yes vote from all trustees Debra present, was passed in Daniels the wake of Daniels’

abrupt resignation March 18.

“The Parties expressly acknowledge that the consideration for this Agreement reflects a compromise of disputed claims and that said consideration is intended merely to avoid litigation with respect to said claims,” the agreement – obtained by The Herald-News via a Freedom of Information Act request – states. “Nothing herein contained shall be construed as an admission of liability by either party.”

According to the agreement, dated March 21, the college will pay Daniels $196,270 in 12 monthly installments, beginning Friday, regardless of whether

she takes a job elsewhere. The school also will pay for Daniels’ health insurance benefits for a year.

Daniels will release any claims she may have had against the school regarding “alleged breaches of the Contract” or anything else, the agreement stated, and JJC will release any claims against Daniels.

Both Daniels and the college also agree to keep the terms and content of the agreement confidential, the document states.

Daniels stated in her resignation letter to board Chairman Robert Wunderlich she resigned for “personal rea-

sons.”

Wunderlich has said a recent college climate survey, for which about 25 JJC administrators were interviewed about a range of topics, including personnel matters, “had a little bit to do with” Daniels leaving.

Daniels took over as president in 2012 and her contract was extended last year to 2018. Administrative Services Vice President Judy Mitchell is serving as interim president and is scheduled to be formally approved for the interim role at the board’s April 19 meeting.

Judge denies motion to halt North’s closure Group plans to amend complaint

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will County Judge Roger Rickmon denied Wednesday a motion from the Lincoln-Way Area Taxpayers Unite group that asked for a temporary restraining order to prevent the closing of North High School.

Lincoln-Way High School District 210 officials plan to have the school closed this fall to resolve a financial crisis.

The legal battle between the resident group and district officials tipped further in favor of the district Wednesday after Rickmon ruled the group’s attorney did not establish residents would be harmed by the closing of North or that it was likely the group could successfully prove its claims in the motion.

Rickmon previously ruled in favor of the district to dismiss LWATU’s lawsuit but he dismissed two counts without prejudice, allowing for an amended complaint to address one paragraph in the more than 500-page complaint that had concerned him.

LWATU attorney Stephen Eberhardt said he wanted the temporary restraining order to be issued Wednesday.

He filed the motion for it March 18 to prevent district officials from taking any action to close North and to set a date for an evidentiary hearing on the issuance of a preliminary in-

junction on closing the school.

The district’s attorneys opposed the motion, arguing the motion is not an emergency despite repeated attempts at legal action by the group, is not supported by law and should be denied.

Eberhardt said after Wednesday’s hearing that he would file a second amended complaint next week to add language clarifying that the plaintiffs are parents of Lincoln-Way students.

Rickmon said in the hearing that the temporary restraining order was brought forward by taxpayers, not parents or children.

Eberhardt had argued that North students would be injured with the closing of the school because it might impact their opportunities for academic success, scholarships and college.

William Gleason, the district’s attorney, responded that students were not plaintiffs in the case and thus not relevant. Eberhardt said he was troubled by Gleason saying the students are irrelevant.

“That, your honor, is outrageous,” Eberhardt said.

Gleason objected, saying he said children were not plaintiffs.

Plainfield woman launches small business podcast

PLAINFIELD – After launching her own Internet talk show earlier this year to provide a support network for small business owners, a Plainfield business owner now wants them to listen in.

Better yet: Join the conversation, said Lesa Zonsius, the talk show’s creator and owner of ZonCom Productions in Plainfield.

“It’s a platform for the business owners to talk about personal stories or to educate other people,” said Zonsius, who recently was appointed to chair the Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce’s Home-Based Networking Group. “It’s a great avenue to connect with people who work from home.”

Dubbed “The Business Water Cooler,” it launched on Facebook in January as a panel discussion. The podcast is available at www.facebook.com/ thebusinesswatercooler.

Zonsius said each segment of the show will feature three home-based business owners. So far, she’s featured a personal trainer, graphic designer, massage therapist, chiropractor and business coach.

from what you’d normally be exposed to,” she said. “At a corporation, you can communicate [with coworkers] and get feedback. It’s not the same when you’re working from home.”

The show – with new episodes air-

ing on Facebook twice a month – will provide a forum for business owners to share expertise, common challenges and general experience with operating a business, according to a news release.

Although the shows are mostly pre-recorded, Zonsius said she hopes to test out live shows via Facebook. That way, viewers can interact and shape the show by commenting and asking questions.

The next show will air at 2:30 p.m.

Wednesday on the talk show’s Facebook page. The show will center around “financial planning,” Zonsius said, with guests Eric Marsaglia of Northern Insurance; Jeff Bishop, owner of Bishop Financial Solutions; and Colleen Sawatzky, an accountant with Virtual Shoebox.

A frequent guest on “The Business Water Cooler” is Aundre Pace, a business coach who will offer leadership development, goal-setting tips and strategic planning, according to the release.

Zonsius encourages other local small businesses to reach out if they want to be featured on the show.

“We’re trying to actually reach out to various communities, as far spread into suburbs as we can go,” Zonsius said.

Chicago Street Pub will be featuring a different brewery each week. JCCP is also working with Will County Land Use to add a community table that will host community gardens from around Joliet.

“It should be a nice change of pace from what everybody’s used to,” said Strickland.

The Joliet Downtown Farmers Market will take place 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesdays from June 8 to sept. 21. There will be no market Sept.

Gang member will be sentenced for bar brawl

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A sentencing hearing began Wednesday for one of the men involved in a gang fight at a Joliet bar last spring that ended when a man was shot in the head.

The then-19-year-old victim survived but spent months in the hospital before being moved to a long-term medical care facility, Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Peter Wilkes said.

Marcos Briceno, 36, of Joliet, pleaded guilty to aggravated battery Marcos and mob action for the Briceno April 12, 2015, fight in the beer garden of Los Diaz Bar & Liquors, 674 Meeker Ave. Briceno has made a blind plea before Judge Dave Carlson and faces two to 10 years in prison.

Since 1997, Briceno has been arrested on charges of unlawful use of a weapon, mob action, marijuana possession, criminal trespassing, domestic battery, theft and driving under the influence. He was convicted of aggravated discharge of a firearm in 2005.

“He’s no angel,” older brother Her-

man Briceno testified. “He’s not a teenager. He’s an adult who needs to figure out his life ... but underneath this is a good person.”

Briceno’s longtime girlfriend, Tracy Fausto, told the judge Briceno’s arrest was a “wake-up call” for him.

“Before [the plea] he was looking at two Class X felonies ... up to 60 years, his whole life,” she said.

A few days after several Latin King gang members reportedly jumped a member of the Vice Lords, Briceno and other Vice Lords went to Los Diaz to confront them, according to police.

Antonio Luna, 27, of Aurora, allegedly shot the victim and faces attempted murder charges.

Marcus T. Alexander of Joliet, Serafin Castellanos of Oswego, Anthony Grant of Aurora, Robby L. Patton of Aurora, Austin R. Runde of Aurora, Adrian Vega of Aurora, Arthur G. Jiminez of Aurora, Alejandro Lara-Leyva of Aurora and Nicolas J. Pisano of Aurora also were charged with aggravated battery and mob action.

Carlson said Wednesday he will review a recording of Briceno’s interview with police and then allow Briceno to make a statement before issuing a sentence April 11.

Joliet man shot at, then arrested

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police said a Joliet man’s car was shot at Tuesday morning shortly before he was arrested and charged for carrying a gun of his own.

Samuel L. Mays, 23, was driving a beige Buick LeSabre with a female passenger about 11:30 a.m. near Wilcox and Moran streets when Samuel L. the shooting occurred, Mays according to Deputy Chief Ed Gregory.

“He told officers he saw an older-model white vehicle coming up on the driver’s side, heard several shots, and the rear window of the Buick shattered,” Gregory said.

The white car sped away from the scene. Neither Mays or his passenger was injured. A house in the 1000 block of Wilcox and the tire of a car parked outside also were struck, Gregory said.

Officers arrived and spoke with Mays, who remained behind the wheel.

“He’d been talking to the officers, when he suddenly pulled away and drove down the street before [police] made a traffic stop. As Mays got out of the vehicle and started running to Hutchins Street, officers could see a handgun shoved into his waistband,” Gregory said.

According to police reports, Mays tossed the gun onto the roof of a nearby garage before he was taken into custody at Hutchins Street and Oakland Avenue. Gregory said officers later recovered the gun from the roof.

Mays, of the 700 block of North Hickory Street, was arrested on charges of unlawful use of a weapon, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a gang member, defacing the identifying markings of a firearm and obstructing a police officer.

MORRIS – Residents of Grundy County and far southwestern Will County have a particular affinity for the Tully Monster, an odd little creature that used to swim the shallow tropical seas and coastal swamps of the area some 300 million years ago.

Fossils of this fearful-sounding beast are found only here, mostly in a strip mining pit called Pit 11. It’s also the Illinois state fossil, designated as such in 1989.

The strangely shaped Tully Monster has become headline news of late.

A team led by Yale University paleontologists – together with Argonne National Laboratory, The Field Museum of Natural History and the American Museum of Natural History – announced March 16 in the scientific journal Nature that the Tully Monster was a vertebrate.

It put to rest a decades-long quandary on how to classify the odd animal.

Rural Morris resident Dan Tully – the son of Francis Tully, who discovered the animal’s fossil – said he found the news interesting. He said his father, since deceased, would have too.

Tully said he was with his father when he found the fossil for the first time.

“We used to fossil hunt in the strip mines south of Braidwood,” he said.

“We’d camp on the weekends and go fossil hunting and fishing.”

Tully, his brother and his father found a lot of fossils at the site. They are embedded in rock, Tully said, called concretions.

“You’re looking for concretions, right above the coal layer,” he said.

“You crack the nodules open.”

He remembers the day in 1957 when

Tully said his father told him that Richardson showed it to other paleontologists across the country, and they didn’t know quite what to make of it.

“Nobody had seen anything like it,” Tully said. “It was common talk among paleontologists at the museum. Now and then, somebody would say, ‘Anybody ever hear anything about Tully’s monster?’ ” That was how the animal known scientifically as Tullimonstrum gregarium got its name.

Carbon Hill School Museum Curator Michelle Micetich said what is known as the Mazonia fossil beds are rich with hard evidence of prehistoric plant and animal life.

“You’ll get plants and animals,” she said, “like ferns and ammonites, worms, mollusks, shrimp and fish, amphibians ... and the Tully Monster. That’s a rare, rare thing. ... I think we have two of them.”

During the Great Depression, Micetich said, paleontologists would hire men to dig up and bring them fossils from the site.

Eventually quite a collection was amassed, and about 1,200 specimens were used in the recent scientific analysis.

The Grundy County Historical Museum in Morris has nice examples of Tully Monster fossils, as well as a couple of recreations of what the animal must have looked like. One was made by historian Brian Nolan.

Grundy County historian Debbie Steffes said Nolan also made a cookie cutter in the shape of the monster, which she uses to make cookies for groups of schoolchildren who tour the museum.

Steffes said she enjoyed hearing the recent news about the Tully Monster.

“I think it’s just great,” she said.

“He’s the state fossil, and it’s nice to rejuvenate him. We’re the only state that has a fossil.”

Sky Zone will occupy part of old Dominick’s store

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Sky Zone Trampoline Park coming to Joliet late this year will fill part of the former Dominick’s store on Essington Road.

Sky Zone announced this week that it will open one of its trampoline parks at 2318 Essington Road.

The company, based in California, is a fast-growing chain providing indoor trampoline parks for exercise, games, parties, school field trips and even corporate team-building events.

Customers jump on the trampoline surface. Sky Zone organizes assorted activities, including doing aerobics, playing dodgeball and even jousting.

The Joliet facility is slated to include a Ninja Warrior Course, creating an obstacle course on trampoline material. It also will have a climbing wall with a foam bottom to soften falls.

“I think the Joliet community as a whole will enjoy and embrace this experience,” franchisee Mark Glazer said. “Our tagline is, ‘If you can walk, you can jump.’ ” Glazer and his wife, Barbara, will own the Joliet franchise. They also

Sky Zone will take up about a third of the space of the former Dominick’s store, Glazer said. The Dominick’s store closed in December 2013 when the chain went out of business.

Glazer said the Joliet location will open sometime between October and the end of the year. He has a contract

for 27,000 square feet of space, which will be remodeled to accommodate the new use.

Sky Zone has one other Illinois location in Elmhurst. The company has announced plans to open in Orland Park, Schaumburg, Vernon Hills and Springfield.

Company spokeswoman Emily Johnston said the Orland Park location

is expected to open in August.

Sky Zone was ranked among the nation’s fastest growing franchises by Inc. magazine. The California-based company as 134 locations in the U.S., Mexico, Canada and Australia.

Sky Zone customers are all ages, Johnston said. Prices start at $10 for 30 minutes but the rates go down the more time is used, she said.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Supreme Court has agreed to hear an appeal of the murder conviction of former suburban Chicago police officer Drew Peterson.

The ex-Bolingbrook sergeant is serving 38 years in prison for the bathtub drowning death of ex-wife Kathleen Savio.

The Third District Appellate Court ruled in November evidence against Peterson was sufficient to show he killed Savio, whose body was found in her suburban Chicago home. No date has been given for arguments before the Supreme Court.

Savio’s death was initially ruled accidental, but the case was reopened after Peterson’s fourth wife, Stacy Peterson,

disappeared in 2007. Peterson remains a suspect in that case.

Peterson is scheduled to stand trial in May on charges he solicited an inmate to kill Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow, who prosecuted the Savio case.

Will County state’s attorney spokesman Charles Pelkie said Peterson’s hearing will be “part of the process.”

“The merits of this case were argued successfully at the pretrial level, at trial and several times on the appellate level and the state has prevailed each time,” Pelkie said.

“We are confident this prosecution will have the same outcome with the Illinois Supreme Court.”

Yard waste pickup resumes Friday in Joliet

JOLIET – The city of Joliet and Waste Management are announcing the return of yard waste collection effective Friday, according to a city news release.

Yard waste collection had been suspended for the winter.

Residents desiring yard waste collection service are reminded that yard waste must be placed in permanent-type, 33-gallon refuse containers identified with a “yard waste only” sticker, or in 32-gallon disposable Kraft paper bags.

Yard waste will not be collected in plastic bags or in containers larger than 33 gallons.

“Yard waste only” stickers are available, free of charge, at all Jewel and Certified Warehouse Foods locations in Joliet and at the information desk of the Joliet Municipal Building.

Lee was born March 30, 1945, in Lawrence, KS, to the late William B. and Emma B. (Hamlin) Davis. He attended Joliet High School and graduated from Coal City High School in 1965. He served in the U.S. Army, and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He later attended Illinois State University. On March 25, 1972, he married Nancy Binder in Moline. Lee was employed by ExxonMobil Corporation, working in various roles over a 32-year career. Lee was a people person and throughout his life impacted many people’s lives, both personally and professionally, with his positive attitude and ability to connect with everyone he met.

Lee and Nancy lived in Minooka, and spent winters in Naples, FL. They attended First Christian Church of Morris. Lee had unmatched enthusiasm for life. He enjoyed photography, boating, discipleship, volunteer work, and anything that related to spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a devout Christian and fulfilled his most important role by teaching his sons to be godly men, husbands, fathers and sons.

Arthur Allen Thompson was born on July 18, 1957, to James and Lavater Thompson in Chicago, Artie or Artie Mack as he was affectionately called by his friends.

He attended Chicago public schools. He was employed with Globe Glass Co. for many years; he enjoyed working on cars with his father and friends. Artie attended Greater Union Baptist Church during his youth.

God blessed him with a powerful spirit, an unceasing work ethic, and a sense of humor that drew people to him near and far.

Although he was an ordinary man, his compassion for people made him extraordinary.

He was a man who did things his way, “The Thompson Way.” He was called home to be with God and his parents on March 27, 2016, at 3:55 p.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital with family and friends by his side.

Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, James and Lavater Thompson.

Arthur leaves to cherish precious memories, his brother, Ernest “Clyde” (Georgia) Thompson; his sons, Hurley “TT” Jones of Wisconsin and Christopher Thompson of West Virginia; fiancée, Karen Morgan; stepdaughter, Natalie Campbell; special nieces, Mia Thompson-Gardner (Bruce) and Yolanda Hare; special nephews, Anthony E. Teen pepper-sprayed as Trump protesters, supporters clash The ASSOCIATED PRESS JANESVILLE, Wis. – Police are looking for a man who pepper-sprayed a 15-year-old girl as opponents and supporters of Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump clashed outside a Wisconsin rally.

The altercation is the latest in a series of confrontations that have marred recent Trump events.

Investigators have photos taken by participants at Tuesday’s demonstration outside of the Holiday Inn Express that could help to identify the man with the pepper spray, Janesville police Sgt. Aaron Ellis said Wednesday.

Ellis said the girl told police she punched a man who groped her, and another man then pepper-sprayed her. The girl and a 19-year-old woman standing next to her were treated and released from a hospital, police said.

Ellis said the girl could face charges for punching the man, identified by the Wisconsin State Journal as Dan Crandall, of Milton.

“I didn’t touch her,” Crandall, a Trump supporter, told the newspaper. “She started to challenge why I was at the Trump rally since I was a grown man. I told her I was at the Trump rally because I was a grown man and I cared about my country.”

Crandall said someone standing behind him used the pepper spray.

That person could be charged with illegal discharge of pepper spray since

he was not using it in self-defense, Ellis said.

“It doesn’t appear that [the man who used the pepper spray] was directly involved,” Ellis said. Police released a photo of the man suspected of using pepper spray on the girl, which shows him wearing a red hat with the Trump campaign slogan “Make America Great Again.”

Video posted on social media shows the girl arguing with someone in the crowd before punching or pushing a person who was not shown on camera. The teen was then pepper sprayed and walked away.

About 1,000 people attended the rally at the adjacent Janesville Conference Center, while another 1,000 demonstrated outside the hotel in the hometown of U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan, police said. About 350 law enforcement officers were there in case the demonstration or rally became unruly, said Janesville Police Chief David Moore.

The confrontation Tuesday come after the arrest of six protesters Monday night who refused to leave the hotel’s lobby. Police said the six were part of a group of several dozen protesting Trump’s appearance.

All five presidential contenders campaigned Tuesday in Wisconsin, one week before the state’s highstakes primary election. Also Tuesday, police in Jupiter, Florida, filed a criminal complaint against Trump’s campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, for a videotaped altercation with a reporter.

Survived by her husband of 51 years Julius Teitle; sister, Lillian Staes; sister, Dorothy Clemens; son, Mike Teitle and Sonya Becker; daughter, Susan (Teitle) Thomas and husband, Paul, and their children MaKenzie, MiKayla, Alex, Ethan and Jared; daughter, Bonnie (Teitle) Thatcher and husband, Charles, and their son, Tucker; granddaughter, Jessica Teitle and fiance Adam Lopez; and great-grandson, Aaden; and great-grandbaby, on the way.

Preceded in death by her sister, Florence Fronek; and brother, James Love.

Esther, the daughter of Lester and Helen Love, was born on May 16, 1937, in Joliet. Esther loved life and her family more than anything in the world and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved to dance, was a cheerleader at Joliet Central High School, and was honored to dance before President Eisenhower with her dance troupe. Esther enjoyed music and played the violin, piano and organ. She was Queen of Bethel at the Mason Lodge, later worked at Illinois Bell for over 10 years, and was owner/broker of E.T. Realty in Joliet.

In 1964, Esther married the love of her life, Julius Teitle, and balanced her time as a successful real estate broker while raising her three children, Mike, Susan and Bonnie. She never stopped giving to her family and friends.

In recent years, she enjoyed spending time with all of her Grandchildren and helped care for her great-grandson, Aaden.

She never missed a day of his activities.

A celebration of her life will be held at the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home, 2320 Black Road, Joliet, Friday, April 1, 2016, from 4 to 7 p.m. Private interment.

Gov. frustrated at lack of budget progress

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner expressed frustration at the lack of progress in budget negotiations with Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan, saying Wednesday that his efforts to arrange a one-on-one meeting have gone nowhere.

Rauner accused Madigan and fellow Illinois Democrats of “playing games” by purposefully stalling talks on a long overdue budget so they can argue for a tax hike.

Illinois is the only state in the country without a budget for the current fiscal year, which began July 1.

“Why can’t we meet today? What’s the reason? There’s no reason. It’s game-playing on their side. They’re trying to force a tax hike, and they’re playing games right now,” a clearly exasperated Rauner said during an event to promote a revamp of the state’s information technology systems.

Madigan spokesman Steve Brown responded by blaming Rauner for the budget impasse, noting that it was the governor who vetoed the spending plan

Prosecutors won’t retry Blagojevich on tossed counts

CHICAGO – Prosecutors said they won’t retry former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich on five counts tossed by a federal appeals court and have requested a resentencing date.

Prosecutors’ Wednesday filing came two days after the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear Blagojevich’s appeal of 13 remaining corruption convictions. Those include his attempt to sell an appointment to the Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama.

The high court was one of the 59-yearold Democrat’s last hopes to have his remaining convictions tossed or to sharply reduce his 14-year prison sentence.

An appeals court in July vacated Blagojevich’s convictions on five counts and told prosecutors to consider resentencing him on the remaining counts. But they

meet with the governor, Brown said: “I haven’t asked the speaker that so I wouldn’t know.”

The ideological clash between Rauner and Democrats who control the Legislature has plunged Illinois further into debt during the nine months the state has operated without a budget because of court-ordered spending for key programs. But it’s happening at the levels from the fiscal 2015 budget, when revenues were higher.

Meanwhile, social service programs have been forced to make cuts, and higher education institutions have laid off staff. Chicago State University on the city’s South Side is considering closing altogether, a prospect Rauner called “an outrage.”

Chicago State backs off plan to collect keys

CHICAGO – Chicago State University backtracked Wednesday from a plan to collect keys from faculty and staff members, instead announcing that it would take an inventory of keys that might have to be collected should layoffs be necessary amid the state’s financial crisis.

Administrator Aleshia Renee Terry had asked deans on Monday to begin collecting keys “as soon as possible,” the Chicago Tribune reported. The school said the move was necessary to protect state property.

“Every key must be collected, including master keys and special lock keys,” she wrote. “We are attempting to complete the key collecting process by April 4.”

Chicago to consider settlement in jail death suit

CHICAGO – Chicago’s City Council is expected to vote next month on a proposed agreement that would settle a

federal civil suit brought by the family of a man who died after police subdued him with a stun gun and dragged him out of a cell by his handcuffs.

The city hasn’t disclosed the terms, including about any payout to the family of Philip Coleman, who was 38 when he died in 2012, the Chicago Sun-Times reported this week.

A decisive December ruling by Judge Matthew Kennelly found “brute force” was used unnecessarily on Coleman, a finding that left the question of any payment amount to a jury. But a settlement would avert a trial.

Obama commutes drug sentences of 5 Ill. inmates

CHICAGO – President Barack Obama has commuted prison sentences of five Illinoisans, including three serving life terms for drug crimes.

The Illinois inmates were among 61 drug offenders whose sentences Obama commuted Wednesday. One of the inmates, Jesse Webster of Chicago, is serving a life term for intent to sell cocaine and filing false tax returns. Webster is to be released Sept. 26.

The two others serving life sentences

are Larry Nokes of Quincy and Ismael Rosa of Chicago. Nokes is to be released July 28 and Rosa next March.

Obama also commuted the 30-year sentence of Jose Ramon Rivera of Chicago on heroin counts. Rivera will be released July 28. Ernest Spiller of East St. Louis will be released July 28, too. He faced nearly 30 years for crack cocaine and firearms convictions.

Illinois farmland prices see significant drop in 2015

PEORIA – Illinois farmland prices saw a significant decline last year after the downward price trajectory of grain produced on the land, according to a new report from the Illinois Society of Professional Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers.

The group’s annual farmland value report shows that agriculture acreage across Illinois dropped between 8 percent and 9 percent in 2015.

Land rated “excellent” and “good” both saw an 8 percent decline, selling at $11,737 per acre and $8,756 per acre, respectively. Land rated “average” sold for $6,215 per acre, a 9 percent decline.

MADISON, Wis. – Frustrated Republicans grappled with new fears about Donald Trump’s impact on their party Wednesday, as the billionaire businessman’s campaign rivals targeted his punitive plan for fighting abortion and extraordinary defense of his campaign manager, who police say assaulted a female reporter.

Concern rippled through Republican circles nationwide, yet few dared criticize the GOP front-runner directly when pressed, leery of confronting the man who may well lead their election ticket in November.

Their silence underscored the deep worries plaguing the party’s leaders – particularly its most prominent women – who are growing increasingly concerned that a Trump presidential nomination could not only cost the 2016 election but also tarnish the party brand for a generation of women and young people.

“A nominee who cannot speak to women cannot win,” New Hampshire party chairwoman Jennifer Horn said, although declining to rebuke Trump by name.

Trump added to his challenge when asked to explain his prescription to fight abortion, a subject that remains highly controversial decades after the Supreme Court legalized it.

He told MSNBC during the taping of a town hall-style event in Wisconsin that abortions should be banned and, if they are, women who

get them should receive “some form of punishment.” That sparked an immediate backlash from both sides of the debate, and Trump’s campaign quickly backtracked, releasing a statement that sought to take back his words. It said that only those who perform abortions would be “held legally responsible, not the woman.”

“The woman is a victim in this case as is the life in her womb,” the new Trump statement said.

The abortion comments came as Trump questioned the findings of Jupiter, Florida, police, who charged his closest political adviser, Corey Lewandowski, with misdemeanor battery on Tuesday after examining surveillance video of an incident in which a reporter said she was grabbed and shoved. The police report said the woman’s arm revealed “bruising from what appeared to be several finger marks indicating a grabbing-type injury.”

“I don’t know who created those bruises,” Trump said Wednesday.

The Republican front-runner suggested his campaign manager was simply trying to protect him from Michelle Fields, a reporter for Breitbart News at the time, who was trying to ask him a question after a March 8 campaign appearance.

“She’s got a pen in her arm, which she’s not supposed to have, and it shows that she’s a very aggressive person who’s grabbing at me and touching me,” Trump said. “Maybe I should file charges against her.”

A few months ago, a young American woman named Kate decided to organize a choir in a refugee camp.

To do so, she went to Germany, as a visiting guest artist at the American Academy in Berlin. She settled down around the block from a Red Cross building. Her camp is a gym with about 200 asylum-seekers, coming currently from Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Moldova and Vietnam.

Oh, to see the faces of the children Kate is working with as part of the Hutto Project, named after her late music teacher, Benjamin Hutto, who worked out of the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. To look at those children, pictures of whom you can see on the Hutto Project’s Facebook page, is to witness the persistence of beauty and the miracle of grace.

As one visitor puts it: “For the course of a song or dance, for a few minutes when she has them thoroughly engaged, [the Hutto team] makes [the children] laugh and smile, and you can actually see that for those minutes, and maybe only those minutes, they are forgetting everything else.” This is true beauty, in the midst of so much that could otherwise blind everyone to its presence.

Kate’s story reminds me of tales I’ve read all my life of founders of religious orders who simply answered a call put in their heart by God, without full regard for how to get from point A to point B, never mind having the luxury to think about Z. But the resources came, as did the people. Translators, musicians, videographers and counselors all have flocked to Project Hutto.

I happened to be with about 100 religious sisters as Easter approached, just hours after almost 200 of them were gathered outside the Supreme Court in Washington for the Little Sisters of the Poor religious liberty case. My crew these days are the Sisters of Life, who are celebrating their silver jubilee year, two decades into the life of their community, founded to cultivate a culture of life.

The sisters pour their hearts out to women who find themselves in what otherwise could seem to be impossible situations – alone, pregnant,

Kathryn Jean Lopez often beset by the many stresses of life, with the world telling them to end the life of their child. The sisters love these mothers and give them the support they need to embrace their lives and the budding lives of their children. The sisters also care for those who have been hurt by a culture of death.

Pope Francis often talks about people on the peripheries in a throwaway society. We cast aside people who seem to be without value.

If the poor are even on our radar at all, it may be as a statistic or unfortunate collateral damage in a news story. Caught up in headlines about Obamacare politics, to stop for a moment and consider who the sisters are, what they do and why they do it could be a great consolation and boost for our society at a time when people are despairing and doubling down on chaos or anger. We need to know that such people as the Little Sisters of the Poor exist. They help us see joy.

Whether they be my young friend Kate Eberstadt or Sister Constance of the Little Sisters, who has become a master communicator during the group’s unexpected national media moment, or Mother Agnes Donovan, the group’s superior general – none of these women are what the world traditionally might think of when it thinks of mothers.

And yet, they are exactly the mothers we need – at a moment when so much seems impossible. At a moment where the future is unclear, someone hands her son or daughter a musical instrument, and it’s just a little bit of a miracle. To see love again. To see hope again. In the smile of someone who didn’t have to care for you, to even give a moment’s thought to you.

To see someone love your child – this is the start of a reawakening.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dumb cars and smart drivers

To the Editor: I have driven more than 700,000 miles in cars, vans, pickups and SUVs – on interstates to cow paths in all types of weather. I was in one serious accident on black ice. I have driven in conditions where it was raining so hard or the fog was so thick I drove using the center stripe as a guide.

Lots of experience and knowledge go into avoiding the hundreds of near accidents. Knowing when to speed up, slow down, stop and swerve – or a combination of all those – comes from actually being in control of the vehicle.

The more someone drives, the more experience they gain for those times split-second decisions are needed. Being a passenger does not give someone that necessary experience. Why is that so critical of a difference?

The new “smart cars” work well when the weather is nice. If it is a little snowy, rainy, foggy or slick, a human is supposed to take control. When conditions are too bad for the computer, a novice driver is expected to take control.

Imagine having frequent-flier passengers

being asked to take over a 737 because the pilot or the computer can’t function under the nasty condition.

Maybe all automated cars should be kept in the garage during bad weather.

Bring back the death penalty

To the Editor: I think George Ryan made a mistake doing away with the death penalty.

Fifty years ago, my mom’s cousin got robbed and killed in Chicago. For what?

A paycheck for $100. The two who did it got life in prison.

It’s sad that is still going on. My friend lost his son and his (son’s) girlfriend to “an animal,” in my words. They were beaten to death. They didn’t deserve that. I’m sorry to see them go through this (and I thank the Joliet police for catching this low-life).

To those who think it’s inhumane – death by lethal injection: Look at what they did to their victims. In my opinion, they get off easy.

Morris uses 3-hitter by Corban to edge JCA

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – On a cool and overcast day where hits were at a premium, a pitcher who was seeing her first action of the season on the mound came away with the victory.

Morris’ Gigi Corban and Joliet Catholic Academy’s Alyssa Callans combined for a good pitchers duel in which one team collected multiple hits in only one inning.

That came in the fourth, when Morris opened with a single and double to produce the game’s only run. Morris captured a 1-0 nonconference road victory Wednesday in a rematch of last season’s sectional semifinal, which the Angels won.

Morris improved to 6-1, while JCA suffered its only loss in six games as Corban allowed just three hits – singles in the second, third and fifth – and didn’t walk anyone. Callans gave up five hits and struck out seven while yielding just one walk.

“It was a really nice win,” Corban said. “I was proud of how I pitched, and I started pitching a lot better once I realized that I could do it. and we’re all like family and we stick together.”

Morris also had the other extra-base hit, a two-out double off the left field fence by Janelle Brehm in the fifth inning. Ryan Friend and Jasmine Cook also had hits for the visitors.

The Angels also had a leadoff single by Caitlyn Spreitzer in the second inning.

“We hit the ball hard a few times, but it was right at people, and they made some nice plays and turned a double play,” JCA coach Dave Douglas said. “We didn’t make contact like we had the last few games, but that’s going to happen every now and then.

It’s a long season, so you can’t get too crazy over one game.

“We had leadoff people on in the first three innings but couldn’t score them, so that’s half the battle. I told the girls that we weren’t going to go undefeated, so while we didn’t win, we made all of our defensive plays. If you don’t score any runs, you can’t win a game. The thing that I’ve been most excited about is our defense. We’re making the plays we’re supposed to.”

“Everybody can hit one once in a while,” she said.

“But it’s the defensive plays that save games. You’ve got to protect your pitcher.”

After Newtoff scored the first run on Sabor’s double, West tied it in the bottom of the inning on Ames’ double and Smith’s two-out single.

After that, the Tigers had precious little going on offensively against Daly. They scratched out their final run in the sixth on Savanah Delrose’s infield single. The inning ended when Connell, a junior catcher, picked off Budzinski at third with the bases loaded.

“Maria hurt her shoulder just before that when she dove into third base,” Campbell said. “So I didn’t think she would make a throw like that.

She has a great arm, and she likes to throw.”

The Division II Bulletin Newsletter announced that Lewis’ Mariyah Brawner-Henley has been selected to the All-America first team, and teammate Jessica Kelliher was named to the DII Bulletin All-Freshman Team.

This is the third organization to name Brawner-Henley, the GLVC Player of the Year, an All-American after the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and Division II Conference Commissioners Association did so earlier this month. Kelliher, the GLVC Freshman of the Year and D2CCA All-Midwest Region second-team member, had a scoring average that ranked first among all freshmen in NCAA Division II.

The WJOL/Don Ladas Memorial Baseball Tournament is scheduled to begin Thursday with opening-round doubleheaders at Providence and at Joliet Catholic.

The schedule at Providence has the Celtics meeting Lincoln-Way West at noon and Plainfield Central taking on Joliet Central at 3 p.m. At JCA, the Hilltoppers will face Minooka at 1 p.m. and Lockport tangling with Joliet West at 4 p.m.

However, if the rain that began falling late Wednesday afternoon and continued into the night still is falling Thursday, forcing the tournament to be postponed, the opening-round games would be played at the same times Friday.

Regardless of when the opening-round games are played, the final two rounds are scheduled Saturday.

Consolation semifinals will be played at 9 a.m. and championship semifinals at 11:30 at Providence and at JCA. The games to determine seventh, fifth, third and first place will begin around noon at Silver Cross Field and continue there for the rest of the day and night. The championship game will begin at about 7:30 p.m.

Local flavor as college hoops wind down With Final Four weekend on the horizon, the time is right to review the national college basketball scene from a local perspective.

No surprise here, but UConn forward Morgan Tuck and the Huskies again are in the women’s Final Four.

They are ranked No. 1 and will take a 36-0 record into their national semifinal battle Sunday against Oregon State.

Tuck, a 6-foot-2 senior, is enjoying a solid season. She has played in 31 games, starting 30, and is averaging 26.3 minutes, 13.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 0.8 steals. She is shooting .512 (166 of 324) from the field, .312 (24 of 77) from 3-point range and .775 (55 of 71) from the free-throw line.

While there is no local representation in the men’s Final Four, it is interesting to note that Villanova will face Oklahoma in one national semifinal. Villanova freshman guard Jalen Brunson led Stevenson to the Class 4A state title a year ago after Stevenson ended Bolingbrook’s title hopes in the semifinals.

Brunson has started 37 of 38 games this season and is averaging 9.8 points, 2.6 assists and 1.8 rebounds while shooting .387 (48 of 124) from 3-point range and .782 (79 of 101) from the free-

Meanwhile, the NIT will end Thursday night with Valparaiso taking on George Washington in the championship game. Valparaiso earned its spot with a thrilling 72-70 semifinal victory Tuesday night over BYU. Our connection? Former Joliet Central all-stater and Illinois standout Roger Powell Jr., who was in the stands doing some scouting at this season’s Bolingbrook at Joliet Central game, is a Valparaiso assistant under coach Bryce Drew.

And while we’re on the subject of championship games, Benedictine took a 31-0 record into the NCAA Division III title game, where it fell to St. Thomas, 82-76.

Senior forward Adam Reynolds (Minooka) started every game this season for Benedictine and averaged 22.5 minutes, 10.5 points, 5.8 rebounds and 0.9 assists while shooting .583 (127 of 218) from the floor, .355 (11 of 31) from 3-point land and .588 (50 of 85) from the foul line. He had seven points and four

rebounds in the championship game.

Several other former area standouts had success on high levels around the country.

Sophomore guard Morris Dunnigan (Joliet West), for example, was named to the All-Region XIV Conference and South Zone first teams after an outstanding season with NJCAA Division I Blinn College (22-10) in Brenham, Texas.

Dunnigan started all 32 games and averaged a conference-leading 22.9 points to go with 5.8 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.2 steals. He shot .475 from the field, .371 from 3-point range and .794 from the free-throw line.

Blinn beat Kilgore, 63-53, in the Region XIV Tournament before losing to eventual tournament champion Trinity Valley, 86-73, in the quarterfinals despite 25 points from Dunnigan.

Junior forward Ben Moore (Bolingbrook) enjoyed a strong season for SMU (25-5), which was not eligible for postseason play. He played in 29 games, starting 27, and averaged 29.8 minutes, 11.9 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.4 blocks and 0.7 steals.

He shot .549 (134 of 244) from the field and .720 (77 of 107) from the free-throw line.

Guard Prentiss Nixon (Boling-

brook) completed his freshman year at Colorado State (18-16) averaging 4.8 points, 1.7 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 14.7 minutes over 31 games, seven of which were starts. He shot .389 from the field, .378 (31 of 82) from 3-point land and .655 (19 of 29) from the foul line.

Senior forward Brian Bennett (Plainfield East) played in all 30 games with seven starts for Cal Poly (10-20).

He averaged 19.2 minutes, 9 points and 4 rebounds while shooting .513 (123 of 240) from the field.

At Illinois (15-19), freshman guard Aaron Jordan (Plainfield East) played in 31 games, six of which were starts.

He averaged 3.3 points, 0.9 rebounds, 0.5 assists and shot .326 from the floor, .344 (22 of 64) from 3-point range and .826 (19 of 23) from the free-throw line.

And finally, junior guard Kevin Kozan (Providence) played in all 27 games at NCAA Division II Henderson State (8-19) in Arkadelphia, Ark. He averaged 31.4 minutes, 12.4 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.1 steals while shooting .385 from the floor, .365 from 3-point range and .714 from the foul line.

Hield’s Final Four with Okla. a payoff for senior return

The Associated Press NORMAN, Okla. – Buddy Hield’s results usually have caught up with his imagination.

This season has surpassed even his wildest dreams as Oklahoma heads to the Final Four this week.

The senior guard considered leaving for the NBA last year, but returned to school to improve his game and has been nearly unstoppable this season.

He’s second in the nation in scoring and averaging 29.3 points in the NCAA Tournament heading into the national semifinal Saturday night against Villanova.

Hield said when he came back to Oklahoma, he knew he had to average at least 17 points.

“Maybe 19, 20 points,” he said. “To average 25 on a nightly basis is kind of tough to do. Everybody’s coming at you, and you’ve still got to put up huge numbers. It’s a blessing.”

Oklahoma’s run to the Final Four reassured Hield that he made the right decision. The Sooners are rolling, and the Bahamas native is a projected lot-

tery pick after being considered a late first-round or early second-round pick a year ago.

“I can’t be more happy than this,” he said.

Oklahoma assistant coach Chris Crutchfield said Hield has improved because he put in the time.

“He’s been special because he’s worked harder,” Crutchfield said. “His drive has been way more than anybody else I’ve coached.”

Hield shoots 46.5 percent and leads the nation with 4.1 3-pointers a game.

He has been at his best in key moments.

He scored 46 points at Kansas and made seven of his eight 3-pointers in the second half on his way to 32 points against LSU. Hield hit a game-winning 3-pointer against Texas and scored 39 in the Big 12 Tournament against Iowa State.

In the tournament, he’s scored big against VCU and Oregon. A repeat against Villanova could lift his team to the title game Monday against the winner between North Carolina and Syracuse.

“A lot of times you talk about guys, especially good players, who have ‘it,’ ”

Crutchfield said. “You can’t put a tag on it.”

Hield was mostly a slasher as a freshman, when he started about half the games. He worked on his shot mechanics and became more of a spot-up shooter as a sophomore. Oklahoma

coach Lon Kruger said Hield also was persistent with the mental game.

“After every practice – and it sounds like I’m exaggerating, but no, it was after every practice – ‘Coach, what do I need to work on? What do I need to do?’ ” Kruger said.

Hield learned to better balance his shooting and attacking during the second half of his junior year and was named Big 12 Player of the Year. That’s when he thought it might be time to head to the NBA. After listening to evaluators, he stayed.

“I know I needed to improve, but I wanted to go so badly,” he said. “I was just caught up in the moment, and I saw friends going, and I thought, ‘OK, it’s your turn, too.’ But I had to be patient.”

He improved his dribble in traffic, became a stronger finisher at the rim, improved his movement away from the ball and learned to create more space when closely covered.

“A lot of times, young people go in the gym and do the things they’re most comfortable doing,” Kruger said.

“Players that keep getting better are going to the gym and working on things that they’re less comfortable doing.”

The Associated Press When it comes to the next generation of baseball stars, another wave of shortstops is forming on the horizon. A couple of tough lefties are coming, too.

Check out these major league rookies in 2016, beginning with a pair of prospects with postseason experience:

• SS Corey Seager, Los Angeles Dodgers: The sweet-swinging North Carolina native is one of the favorites for NL Rookie of the Year after an impressive debut in the final month of last season. Seager hit .337 with four homers and 17 RBIs in 27 games with Los Angeles, and then went 3 for 16 in the Dodgers’ division series loss to the New York Mets.

• LHP Steven Matz, New York Mets: The second-round pick in the 2009 draft brought his electric stuff to the majors last year and went 4-0 with a 2.27 ERA in six starts, returning from a partially torn muscle in his upper back to help New York win the NL East for the first time since 2006.

Matz, who turns 25 in May, also had a 3.68 ERA in three playoff starts.

• LHP Blake Snell, Tampa Bay Rays: The Seattle native rocketed through the minors last year, going 15-4 with a sparkling 1.41 ERA in 25 games over three levels. He appears ticketed for Triple-A Durham at the start of the season, but it likely won’t be long before he makes his debut in the rough-and-tumble AL East.

• SS Trea Turner, Washington Nationals: The 22-year-old Turner came over from San Diego last June, completing a three-team deal from December 2014 that moved Wil Myers from the Rays to the Padres. The

MESA, Ariz. – Jon Lester struck out 10 in five innings and hit a two-run home run to lead the Cubs to a 10-0 win Wednesday over a Colorado Rockies split squad.

Lester allowed only one hit and one walk to go along with the 10 strikeouts, which included striking out the side in the third and fourth innings. His homer off Scott Oberg highlighted a seven-run fourth inning in which the Cubs hammered out two doubles, both by David Ross, and Lester and Kyle Schwarber went back to back.

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Joey Votto had four hits, Brandon Phillips homered and the Cincinnati Reds beat the White Sox, 6-3, at spring training Wednesday.

Votto scored twice and drove in two runs. He has hit safely in 13 of his 19 appearances and reached safely in 17 games.

Jose Quintana was charged with four runs and nine hits in three-plus innings. He struck out three and walked three.

The Sox’s Tyler Saladino hit his fifth home run.

• OF Byron Buxton, Minnesota Twins: The second overall pick in the 2012 draft has been one of baseball’s top prospects for years but is still searching for success in the majors.

He batted .209 with two homers and six RBIs in his first stint with Minnesota last season. A breakout year for the speedy center fielder could go a long way toward helping the Twins contend in the AL Central.

• SS Trevor Story, Colorado Rockies: With Jose Reyes on paid leave while facing domestic violence charges, the 23-year-old Story made a strong bid for the starting shortstop job in spring training. He had 20 homers and 80 RBIs in two minor league stops last year.

• OF Aaron Judge, New York Yankees: The 6-foot-7 Judge was selected by New York in the first round of the 2013 draft out of Fresno State. He hit 20 homers in the minors last season and could be one of the first options for the Yankees if they have any injuries in the outfield this summer.

• SS Orlando Arcia, Milwaukee Brewers: The top minor league prospect for rebuilding Milwaukee is expected to begin the season at Triple-A Colorado Springs. With the offseason trade of Jean Segura to Arizona, the Brewers could hand over the shortstop job to the 21-year-old Arcia at some point this year. The slick fielder also hit .307 with eight homers and 69 RBIs with Double-A Biloxi last season.

• LHP Sean Manaea, Oakland Athletics: The 6-5 Manaea was a key component of the July 28 trade that sent Ben Zobrist to Kansas City.

After going 7-1 with a 2.66 ERA in the minors last year, the big lefty could join Oakland’s rotation in 2016.

UConn back in Final Four, joined by 3 newcomers

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Breanna Stewart said that when she was a freshman, her goal at UConn was to win four national championships.

The Huskies’ star senior stands two victories away from backing up that statement as the Huskies are back in the Final Four for a ninth straight season.

That’s no surprise the way they’ve run through the season, winning all 36 of their games by double digits. Two more wins will give UConn an unprecedented feat with a fourth consecutive title.

“We’re really excited to go to the Final Four,” said Stewart, who was selected as the Most Outstanding Player of the Bridgeport Regional.

“I think that any time you go, it’s a lot of fun, there’s a lot going on. ... This is our last trip with this team. Last time to be with this team. And I think we’re just going to enjoy it. Especially as seniors. Last time it’s going to be like this.”

While it seems that making the national semifinals is an annual rite of spring for UConn, the other teams head-

“So this is a great, great day, and I think that this day signifies just anything is possible. People who know our story and have been following this group, there is no other words to de-

scribe it.

“It’s a great sports story. It has nothing to do with women’s basketball. It has to do with sports and the human spirit – and that might be kinda deep, but that’s what this is, a group that believed when there was no reason to, to see themselves through a Final Four, it’s mind-blowing.

I’m just super happy!”

Syracuse and Washington shocked nearly everyone, pulling off major upsets to advance. The Washington Huskies became the first No. 7 seed to go this far since Minnesota pulled it off in 2004.

Not bad for the fifth-place team in the Pac-12.

“We’re not done yet,” Washington coach Mike Neighbors said. “ ‘What’s Next?’ has been our motto. It’s going to continue to be all the way through Indy.”

The Orange had never made it out of the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament. Now the No. 4 seed in the Sioux Falls Regional is two victories away from a title.

It was a good weekend for Syracuse as the men’s team also advanced to the Final Four, marking the 12th time a school has two teams playing the final weekend of the season.

Honoring Mary’s request Local Catholics faithful to First Saturday devotions

A core group of 15 to 20 people gather at 9 a.m. the first Saturday of each month at the Church of St. Jude in Joliet to pray the rosary. Cox now leads part of the rosary prayers and can’t imagine not attending.

“It just fulfills a need in your spiritual life,” she said.

The First Saturday devotion originates from an apparition that three children from Fatima, Portugal, purportedly saw six times, the first being May 13, 1917. A number of messages are associated with the vision, which believers say is Mary, the mother of Jesus.

One of those messages is a request for certain prayers and acts on the first Saturday of each month for five first Saturdays in a row.

Coleen Frank of Joliet said she and several other women helped initiate the First Saturday devotion about five years ago at St. Jude. Frank said she learned about the devotion when she became involved with a rosary crusade program.

Most of the people who participate are middle age or older, which is why attendance may drop slightly during the winter months, when travel becomes difficult for seniors, Frank said.

Frank feels praying the rosary is an excellent way to develop a close relationship with Jesus through his mother, since the reflections in those prayers center on events in their lives.

“When you say the rosary,” Frank said, “you’re praying to the Blessed Mother, who is opening the book of life of her son, Jesus Christ.”

Geralyn Kuban, the liturgy coordinator at St. Mary Immaculate Parish in Plainfield, said the church has offered the First Saturday devotion since Nov. 3, 2007. At St. Mary, the rosary begins immediately after the 7:30 a.m. Mass on the first Saturday of the month.

“It’s a popular devotion,” Kuban said. “We have anywhere between 60 and 100 people.”

Remove hazards to prevent falls Dear Dr. K: I have osteoporosis, so my bones are going to break more easily. My doctor told me I therefore should try to avoid falls, but he didn’t say how. Any ideas?

Dear Reader: A tumble can send a person with osteoporosis down the road to disability. Many factors can increase your risk for falls. Some have to do with your physical condition; others come from the environment. There is much you can do to reduce both types of risks.

I’ve put some questions for you to ask yourself on my website, www.askdoctork. com. They can help you get a general sense of your risk of falling.

If your risk is high, consider strength and balance training. Focus on exercises that use the muscle groups required for the things you do in real life – getting out of a chair, climbing stairs or reaching a high shelf, for example.

Activities such as yoga and tai chi improve balance and coordination as well as core strength. There is some evidence they may help to prevent falls. Many of the movements done in these activities – lunging, stepping, turning and reaching – are similar to the movements we need to remain independent.

You also can take steps to decrease the impact of health-related issues on your risk of falls: • Pain. Chronic pain can hamper your mobility, throw you off balance or make it difficult to maintain your balance. Talk to your doctor about pain medications that won’t increase your risk of falls.

• Poor vision. It’s easy to trip or lose your balance when you can’t make out the edge of a stair or recognize an object in your path. Have an annual vision exam, and discuss your concerns about falling with your eye doctor.

• Medication side effects. Many drugs increase the risk of falling. Review all of your medications with your doctor. If any of them tend to impair your attention or balance, there may be alternative treatments that are less likely to do so.

Finally, most falls occur in the home.

The following measures can minimize your risk: • Improve lighting. Make sure all areas of your home are well illuminated. Use nightlights to mark hallways and the bathroom.

• Provide handholds. Install grab bars in the bathroom, by the bath and shower.

They can help you keep from falling when you are standing on a slippery surface.

• Remove obstacles and hazards. Clear away clutter from the floors. Keep cords and cables near the walls where you can’t trip on them. Secure area rugs and use grip mats for traction in the bathtub.

The average home is full of hazards.

And as we age, we often develop physical problems. You can work on both fronts.

You can improve your physical limitations, and you can remove and replace many of the hazards.

How do I talk to my husband about putting his dog “Sunny” to sleep? My husband is the most loving, caring, generous person I have ever met, and I don’t know how to tell him it’s time to let his best friend go.

Sunny is 15½ years old and barely can walk because of bad hips. The poor thing can see only shadows and is almost completely deaf. He has been like this for the past two years and is deteriorating steadily.

I’m trying to be understanding and supportive. I bought reusable diapers when Sunny no longer could control his bowels and bladder. I carry him outside multiple times a day and hold him up so he can urinate without the diaper. I wash him regularly after he soils himself. It is very sad.

It is difficult to bring this up with my husband because he knows I’m frustrated with constantly cleaning up and washing bedding after there has been an accident. I don’t want him to think I want him to put the dog to sleep just because it is difficult. It’s just time.

Sunny’s quality of life is zero. The only thing he can do is eat and sleep. Am I wrong? What should I say to my husband to put the poor animal out of his misery? – It’s Time, In Reno Dear It’s Time: Your husband is doing his best friend no favor by letting him linger this way.

What’s going on now isn’t fair to Sunny or to you.

Suggest he contact Sunny’s veterinarian and talk to him/her about his beloved dog’s condition, because I’m pretty sure the vet will agree with me. Then be prepared, because your husband may be so bonded with Sunny he will need grief counseling after his dog is no more.
