JOLIET – Recent deadly shootings in the city unfolded just blocks away from two places Kay Bolden considers close to her heart: the Warren Sharpe Community Center, where she serves as executive director, and her nearby home on Joliet’s south side.

“Many of my [Warren Sharpe Community Center] kids are growing up in households where drugs are common, where gang involvement and crime is common. And many of my children are growing up in households where parents simply can’t afford to get away,” Bolden said.

But she credits the Joliet Police Department’s neighborhood policing team for the strides made over the last few years in building relationships within the poverty-stricken, high-crime community, where people tend to distrust law enforcement, she said.

Bolden’s comments were heard Monday night within Joliet City Hall’s council chambers as part of a public forum hosted by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. CALEA is evaluating the Joliet Police Department for national reaccreditation. The department became an accredited law enforcement agency in 2003 and must reapply every three years.

Six people spoke, most of whom praised the police department for efforts in protecting the public and building trust within communities despite years of tight budgets

and understaffing.

Bolden pointed to Joliet Police Officer Tony Lakota, who has served the Warren Sharpe Community Center as the community’s Neighborhood Oriented Police Team officer for the past 18 months, she said.

“He’s in and out of the [Warren Sharpe Center] all the time. He might play football for a couple of minutes. He might walk through and say hello. The kids are very aware of him,” she said. “He walks around the neighborhood and talks to people all the time.”

Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said he was pleased with the feedback received Monday night from the community.

“It’s nice to be reassured of the good job we’re doing,” Benton said. “It’s about the element of professionalism, the relationship you have with the community, and the perception.”

Jack O’Donnell, a retired police chief from West Des Moines, Iowa, was one of the two CALEA team members who oversaw the public forum.

He said the public hearing was “intended to provide interested citizens or employees of the agency opportunity to address the assessment team.”

The team examines all aspects of the department’s policies, procedures, management, operations and support services. In all, the Joliet Police Department must comply with 484 state-of-the-art standards to gain reaccredited status.

He highlighted the department’s online crime reporting tool, its proactive approach to warning residents about phone and door-to-door scams.

“They’re always quick to respond to crime,” Sheridan said. “The Joliet police officers do deserve a pat on the back for a job well done.”

First Midwest Bank President Jim Roolf also sang high praises of the police department.

He said the Joliet Police Department’s motto – “Working with the community for a safe city” – speaks volumes, he said.

“The responsiveness and professionalism of the entire department is outstanding,” Rolff said.

Just one person had negative comments, but they were not directed at the Joliet police.

U.S. Route 30 work begins April 1 THE HERALD–NEWS Reconstruction of a twomile stretch of U.S. Route 30 will begin as early as Wednesday, according to an Illinois Department of Transportation news release.

Lanes will be shifted along Route 30, Lincoln Highway, between Interstate 55 and Illinois Route 59 as a part of the work, according to the news release.

Several stages of construction will change traffic patterns.

From July 8 to Nov. 20, a detour will go into place between Renwick Road and Route 59.

Limited access for local residences and commercial properties will be allowed.

The work on Lincoln Highway will begin with utility companies relocating facilities to make room for improved drainage and a wider road, according to the news release.

Between Interstate 55 and Renwick Road, the road will become a five-lane highway,

according to the state. Some intersections will have additional turn lanes.

Between Renwick Road and Illinois Route 59, a three-lane section of road will be constructed.

There also will be a widening of the I-55 West Frontage Road, Lily Cache Road and Renwick Road to accommodate intersection improvements.

The project is expected to be completed by summer 2017.

Comments made Monday will be considered as the team reviews the agency and report back to CALEA commission.

Once the commission’s assessors complete a review of the Joliet agency, they report back to the full commission. The commission will then decide if the agency will be granted re-accredited status at its July conference in Colorado.

Carillon Lakes residents turn lake into wildlife haven

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – Carillon Lakes resident Joe Kuffel climbed over a drainage grate of the senior living community’s north lake, named Harmony, and removed a triangular, prism-shaped screen.

Water rushed into the lake’s drainage chamber, filling up as Kuffel and fellow resident Tom Inman cleaned plants and other natural debris off the screen, re-installing it with a new plate that controls drainage flow.

“When we had a flat screen, the fish – with the pressure of the water – would get pinned,” Inman said.

But after doing some research and receiving input from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, members of the Carillon Lakes Fishing and Lake Management group adopted the triangle shaped screen, built by a steel company that had an executive living in Carillon Lakes.

“On our walks around the lakes, we haven’t seen any dead fish after this winter,” Kuffel said. Club members take turns walking around the lakes daily to check for dead fish, external debris and other signs of an unhealthy lake.

When resident Trisha Kulis wanted a waterfront property in Carillon Lakes, she was surprised at all the neighborhood complaints of the lakes.

“The coveted waterfront was really up close and personal to cesspools,” she said.

But the desire for beautiful lakes, not standing retention water, led to a communitywide effort that turned the lakes into a wildlife haven during the past 13 years. The triangle screen was just one result of that effort, which continues today.

Stocking the lakes

Carillon Lakes opened its doors to primarily senior residents in summer 2001. Shortly after, residents formed the

Fishing Committee, then the Fishing and Lake Management group in 2002 after two of the lakes were stocked with water. The third, southernmost lake was dug and filled in 2003.

The lakes were dug for water retention purposes, and the water flows from the southern lake to lower elevations to the north. The southern lake is about 12 acres and is called Lake Melody. The middle lake, Lake Carillon, is about 6 acres, and Lake Harmony is about 4.5 acres. Each has its own water fountains.

“In addition to maintaining beauty of our lakes, they were the dominant feature of Carillon Lakes and we certainly wanted to keep that as good as possible,” Inman said.

“The only reason [migrating birds] come here is they can eat.”

Shortly after residents started moving into the neighborhood, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources

stocked the lakes with 3,150 bluegills and 319 catfish.

In 2004, 434 largemouth bass were added. And in 2007,

more than 1,500 crayfish, along with forage, were stocked. The IDNR also added thousands of fathead minnows for food.

Carillon Lakes resident Tom Walter said over the years, the lakes and their inhabitants have attracted migrating birds.

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The campaign for City Council in District 2 could be a delight for sports fans and recreation enthusiasts.

Two of the candidates are Joliet high school sports legends – Pat Mudron and Roger Powell Sr. The third, Brett Gould, is a three-term commissioner at the Joliet Park District, as well as a former football coach at Lockport Township High School.

Powell was an all-state basketball player at Joliet Central in the 1970s, whose namesake son played on the University of Illinois team that went to the NCAA championship game in 2005. Mudron was a state wrestling champion and all-state football player who went on to play football for the University of Notre Dame.

But what they can do for District Two may be more on voters’ minds April 7.

District Two includes older and newer sections of the West Side of Joliet. It runs roughly from Raynor Avenue on the east to as far west as Interstate 55. It includes sections of the Jefferson Street, Essington Road and Larkin Avenue commercial districts.

tions for Park Board. He was board president for four years, which shows leadership ability, Gould said. He also is an administrator and former principal with the Lockport Township High School District.

“I’m proud of my experience at the park district and what we’ve been able to do even in hard economic times,” Gould said.

The top concern in District Two, he said, is public safety. His top goal, if elected, would be to “make Joliet a safer town – a safer place where people feel they can walk around the neighborhood and walk to the store without being harassed.”

Gould also said the city needs to be cleaned up to build a more positive image.

There is too much trash along Interstate 80 and “Jefferson Street needs a little bit of a revitalization,” he said.

Mudron, a self-employed insurance broker, said the City Council “seems to be somewhat dysfunctional.”

“Working people are in District Two,” he said.

“There are no freebies in District Two. The infrastructure needs to be repaired in District Two. District Two is forgotten about.”

Powell often refers to his basketball experience, saying it taught him the team concept.

“Everybody has to work together,” he said. “One of the things that basketball has given me is an opportunity to work together with people.”

Powell, who also serves on the board of the Housing Authority of Joliet, said he is running for council “to give something back to Joliet.”

Aunt of men accused in terror plot: They’re ‘not monsters’ The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – An aunt of two Aurora men accused of plotting terrorist attacks on an Illinois military facility says the allegations have devastated their extended family of Muslims and Christians.

Tiffany Edmonds spoke to reporters after a brief detention hearing Monday in Chicago for Hasan Edmonds. A federal judge granted a defense request for more time to exam-

ine evidence before any final ruling on bond.

Hasan Edmonds is an Illinois Army National Guardsman. He primarily trained at the Joliet Armory and was arrested last week, accused of plotting with his cousin to attack a military facility where he trained in northern Illinois. Neither National Guard officials nor the criminal complaint filed against the men said what facility they had planned to attack.

Tiffany Edmonds said her nephews became Muslims several years ago. Others in the large Edmonds family also converted, while others remained Christian. She describes the family as patriotic and said two of Hasan Edmonds’ sisters also joined the National Guard.

She added about her nephews: “They’re not monsters.”

Hasan Edmonds had vowed to bring “the flames of war to the heart” of America if he was unable to get to the Middle East

to join the Islamic State group, federal prosecutors said Thursday in announcing the arrest of Edmonds, 22, and his cousin, Jonas M. Edmonds, 29.

Jonas Edmonds bragged that he could kill at least 150 people in a terrorist attack in the U.S., prosecutors said.

Hasan Edmonds was arrested Wednesday night at Midway International Airport while trying to board a plane for the first leg of a journey that eventually would take him to Egypt.

Jonas Edmonds was arrested earlier that day at his home, the U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago said in a statement.

Both suspects lived in Aurora and are U.S. citizens.

While local officials said they did not have information that there was a threat to the Joliet Armory, police had said they had stepped up patrols around the Jefferson Street building as a “preventative measure in the aftermath of Wednesday’s arrests.

Some developers research Lockport and think it’s not a good place for business because of the number of homes or the residential income, he said.

The city would have to build more homes, he said.

The City Council that existed before Mayor Steven Streit took office was marred by fighting, Petrakos said. He said he knows developers will shy away from cities where City Council members fight among each other.

“I think the council is on the

right track right now,” he said.

“With Colarelli stepping down, it’s an opportunity to bring my background to this.”

According to Petrakos’ campaign website, he’s received endorsements from Colarelli and Streit. His candidacy committee “Citizens To Elect Jim Petrakos,” has $4,465 as of March 23, according to state records.

LOCKPORT – The incumbent candidate for Lockport City Council Second Ward will have to contend with two challengers in the April 7 election.

Kelly Turner, 61, a Lockport politician since the mid1990s, is running again for Lockport City Second Ward.

He will compete for the seat against J.R. Gillogly, 52, and Danny Price Jr., 56. Each candidate wants to push to make Lockport better for residents, but in different ways.

Gillogly, an infrastructure access solutions company branch manager, said he was asked by city officials four years ago to run for City Council, but it was too late to do so. This time, Third Ward Alderman Darren Deskin and Second Ward Alderman Brian Smith asked if he wanted to run, and he said yes.

“I want it to be a little bit better run government,” Gillogly said. “It was ugly politics four years ago. … Things have been going good under Mayor Steven Streit and I want to go in that direction.”

He said he has integrity and has been in Lockport long enough for people to know and respect him. Gillogly said he has no hidden agenda and wants only the best for Lockport.

Turner, a Lockport alderman since 1995, said he wants to run for the Second Ward again because he loves helping people. He said he’s made a lot of friends during his time and he believes “all politics is local.”

“When I go door-to-door, people know who I am,” Turner said. “I’ve always had a pretty good vote in the Second Ward. I call the Second Ward

the jewel of the city.”

Key issues for Turner include rebuilding the streets, encouraging economic development and efficient government services.

Turner said he wants to ensure the streets in the old parts of Lockport are not neglected and the city’s Capital Improvement Plan leads to refurbishing roads in those areas. He also wants to advertise the city more to national publications.

Turner also said he wants to make sure certain seemingly less important city services are available to residents who need them, such as leaf pickup or branch pick-up. He said he wants government services in general to be efficient.

“If I can do something to make government less harsh, then I want to be there,” he said.

“According to Illinois State Board of Elections records, Turner has a candidacy committee called “Citizens for Turner” but no filings were made for this year.”

L-Way students advance to national bridge building contest

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Two Lincoln-Way West High School students have built bridges strong enough to land them in a coming international competition.

On April 25, West senior Ray Barrios and junior Ryan Hastings will travel to Portland, Oregon, to compete in the International Bridge Competition at the Museum of Science of Industry. The students will try to construct a bridge that can hold more weight than any other.

The bridges are typically 1 foot long, said Chester Szmurlo, Lincoln-Way physics teacher. But a well-built bridge in these competitions will hold more than 100 pounds, he said.

When these bridges buckle under its load, the crash can be dramatic.

“People literally scream because they know it’s coming,” Szmurlo said. “It’s so much force and it’s so fast. It’s so much fun.”

Barrios and Hastings advanced to the international competition by succeeding at the Regional Bridge Building

Competition at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago.

“It’s almost like, not a checkpoint, but a landmark,” Hastings said about the coming competition.

Ryan The students Hastings competed in the South Suburbs division. Other divisions include North Suburbs and City of Chicago. Hastings’ bridge took first place, while Barrios’ placed second. Hastings

also won a trophy for bridge with the highest efficiency in the competition.

Eleven Lincoln-Way students total placed in the regional competition.

Szmurlo said in bridge building competitions, bridges are loaded until they fail.

The judges calculate bridge efficiency by taking the load a bridge carries and dividing it by the mass of the bridge, he said.

Two bridges may weigh the same, but the one that carries the most weight is more efficient, he said.

Students make use of de-

sign, building, analytical and computer skills, he said. They examine what pieces of a bridge have the highest stress and make sure those pieces are the strongest.

“Being able to take something that is just a bundle of sticks and get it to hold a lot of weight is a completely cool experience,” Barrios said.

Construction of the bridge is a challenging, but ultimately worthwhile experience, Hastings said.

“It gets boring, but it comes together in the end and works like a solid product,” he said.

Price, a Crest Hill Public Works operator, said he wants to run for the Second Ward because he doesn’t like the way Lockport is being run. He said he wants to “throw his hat into the ring.”

One issue for Price is how everything in Lockport needs to be processed by the engineering department.

“I don’t know why everything has to go through engineering,” he said.

Price said his father had issues with a well and needed to tap into a city water main. The

process took four months and required jumping “through hoops” with the city to get it done.

Price said he also wants to make processes simpler for anything in Lockport, be it tapping into water mains, getting something fixed or procuring information.

He also wants to replace aging infrastructure. Price said he has experience replacing aging infrastructure.

According to Illinois State Board of Elections records, there is no candidacy committee in Price’s name.

for people in the community and improve the city’s quality of life.

Bonomo said his 30 years in sales and marketing gives him the talent to attract businesses to Lockport.

“When I live in a community, I like to find out ways to make it a better place for everybody,” he said. “In my opinion, being on the outside is different from being on the inside. I’d like to be on the inside and be part of the decision making.”

Some of the key issues Bonomo sees for Lockport include good financial health, commercial and residential growth, communication and water services.

With Gov. Bruce Rauner announcing proposed cuts to state funding for municipalities, Bonomo said it will be important for Lockport

to “look at everything line by line” and ensure money is being managed wisely.

While other services such as police, fire and water cannot be cut, there may be other areas Lockport would have to tighten its budget, he said.

Bonomo said Lockport needs more development, but city officials should ensure responsible development that doesn’t negatively impact residents.

“We need to create a balance for Lockport to maintain its identity and give people a reason to live here,” he said.

Bonomo previously ran for a seat on the Homer Glen Village Board in 2009. He was one of three candidates endorsed by Homer Glen Mayor Jim Daley. He’s also been a two-term Homer Precinct Committeeman.

According to Illinois State Board of Elections records, there is no candidacy committee in Bonomo’s name.

Trial date set for man accused in shooting death at Joliet Wendy’s

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A June 8 trial date has been set for Daeviontae Pruitte, the 21-year-old gang member accused in the 2012 shooting death of a Crest Hill man outside a Wendy’s fast food restaurant in Joliet.

Pruitte – who is waiting out his murder case in the Will County jail – is alleged to have shot Timothy Egner, 54, to death in the early morning hours of Aug. 1, 2012. Egner was parked outside the restaurant in the 100 block of North Center Street in Joliet waiting for a friend who worked Daeviontae the night shift.

Pruitte Pruitte was arrested in Joliet less than 24 hours after the incident for carrying a .380-caliber handgun, which later tested as a match to the weapon used in the fatal shooting.

On Monday, Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes granted prosecutors’ request to present evidence during the trial surrounding Pruitte’s arrest after the incident.

“This would provide a link to the jury, how the weapon

links Pruitte to the homicide,” Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Mike Fitzgerald said in court Monday.

“These are basic facts.”

Fitzgerald said Joliet police witnessed Pruitte toss a gun that day while running from police. He pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a street gang member in that case and was sentenced to three years in prison.

However, Policandriotes denied Monday another request from prosecutors to enter Pruitte’s previous felony weapon convictions in the record: two aggravated unlawful use of a weapon charges and the possession of a firearm by a street gang member.

Defense attorneys argued presenting those convictions to the jury would “greatly prejudice” the jury against Pruitte.

Policandriotes also took Pruitte’s age at the time of said crimes – 17, 18 and 19 – into account, noting he “can’t get much younger than when he picked up these felonies.”

Policandriotes said prosecutors could use one of Pruitte’s three past felony convictions during the trial, but only if Pruitte denies the convictions while testifying.

Teens arrested and charged with child pornography

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet police arrested four Joliet Central High School students and charged them with child pornography after authorities said they posted on Twitter a video of themselves having sex.

Joliet Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said three boys and one girl between the ages of 14 and 16 were arrested Friday after one of their parents notified police.

He said the teens were at one of their homes at 6 p.m.

March 24 and filmed themselves having sex with the girl. Once one of them posted the video on Twitter, a parent found out and contacted Joliet police.

The next day, Joliet police interviewed the teens. Roechner said the sex was consensual, but posting it online would be considered child pornography.

The students were arrested Friday and had a juvenile hearing Monday, Roechner said. They are being held at River Valley Juvenile Detention Center in Joliet.

But much of the labor is volunteer, and much of the cost is paid through fundraisers by the Fishing and Lake Management group.

One of those fundraisers is the annual Fishing Derby, where children and grandchildren join residents in fishing

for the biggest catch. The derby net the club about $1,000 last year through raffle revenue.

“We even had residents mail checks of $50 and from $100 to $125,” Inman said.

The maintained lakes are young, but well-kept because of the Carillon Lakes community, Kulis said.

“Volunteers and the community, even though none of us are experts, reached out to sources and learned,” she said.

“I think being a new resident here, I found it was amazing and everybody helps each other.”

Adding fish didn’t come without its issues. Residents had to figure out ways to maintain the fish and combat other problems that arose during the past 13 years.

For instance, club members found fish were flowing along with the water through drainage tiles from Lake Melody to Lake Harmony. To keep an even amount of fish in both lakes, the group added the fishing screen on the advice of Rob Miller, an aquatic biologist with the IDNR. Another problem arose after the group realized the new stocked fish had no natural shade. So Miller advised the group install “fish condos,” essentially triangular-shaped wood pallets weighted down with cement blocks.

Walter said, adding his photos of at least 25 species of birds – such as the great blue heron, hooded mergansers and Caspian terns – have attracted bird watchers to the area.

“You see migrant ducks in the spring, some dabblers eating vegetation underneath,” he said. “If you walk in the spring, you can see mallards that live around here. A lot of the birds come from Lake Renwick Preserve, walking along the shoreline and seeing and picking out minnows.”

Walter, who takes photos for many Carillon Lakes events, said swallows come in the summer, along with insects, such as dragonflies humming over the lakes.

“This was our charge, to make a healthy environment for us and the wildlife,” Walter said.

OBITUARIES ALVIN R. ABBOTT

ANN M. HORVATIN

Rev. Dr. Alvin “Doc” R. Abbott, age 85, passed away suddenly, March 28, 2015, at his home.

Survived by his wife, Donna J. (Bailey) Abbott; two sons, Al Jr. (Carol) Abbott, and Brad (Debra); one daughter, Chrystal (Tom) Abbott-Ronchetti; three grandchildren, Alvin Abbott III, Derik Abbott, and Tom Ronchetti II (Xuan); two brothers, George (Carol) Abbott and Wayne (Kay) Abbott.

Preceded in death by his parents, Richard T. and Lauretta (Leiser) Abbott; and one brother, Richard T. Abbott, Jr. Rev Abbott served at First Presbyterian Church in Green Valley, IL, First Presbyterian Church in Clinton, IL and Westminster Presbyterian Church in Joliet, IL where he still served as Pastor Emeritus. Even in retirement, Rev Abbott continued to serve many Presbyterian churches in their needs. He was a founding member of Board of Directors of Stronghold Camp & Conference Center and served the IL Camp & Conference Center, the Joliet Ecumenical Clergy Association, Joliet Pride, Joliet Arsenal Regional Advisory Board and active in various governing bodies within the Presbyterian Church.

Visitation will be held at Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home on Thursday, April 2, 2015, from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Cremation rites will be accorded.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Ann M. Horvatin “Nan” (nee Dolinshek), age 86, at rest on Sunday, March 29, 2015, with her loving family by her side.

Ann is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Raymond Horvatin Sr.; children, Raymond “Biff” Jr. (Ann) Horvatin, Paul J. (Bridget) Horvatin, and Jim (Linda) Horvatin; grandchildren, Raymond “R.J.,” and Andrew J. Horvatin, Shanna, Paul Kyle and Jenell Horvatin, and Chris Clancy; great-granddaughter, Addison Clancy; one sister, Nancy (the late Raymond) Wagner; sister-in-law, Shirley (the later Edward) Dolinshek; numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Mary Dolinshek; siblings, Mary (George) Hirsch, Edward Dolinshek, Dorothy (Anthony) Jerisha, Margaret (William) Plankar and Jeanie (Michael) Pierson.

Nan was born and raised in Joliet, IL and attended St. Joseph Grade School. She graduated from St. Francis Academy in 1946. Nan was a faithful parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Joliet. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church Altar and Rosary Society, K.S.K.J. St. Francis Lodge #29, an original member of the St. Joseph Church Cadets, St. Joseph Seniors Club and the Will County Seniors Club.

Nan was an excellent seamstress and loved making clothing for her family. She was also a wonderful cook and was excellent at baking potica. Nan loved to spend time with her husband, children and grandchildren and enjoyed going on fishing and camping trips with her boys.

She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister who will be dearly missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ann’s name to St. Joseph Church in Joliet or Joliet Area Community Hospice would be appreciated.

A celebration of Ann’s life will begin on Wednesday, April 1, 2015, with prayers in the funeral home chapel at 9:20 a.m. then driving in procession to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Joliet for a Mass of Christian Burial to be held at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery

EDWARD J. JOHNSON Edward Joseph Johnson, age 87, lifelong of Lockport passed away on March 29, 2015, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice House.

Edward was a veteran of the U.S. Army stationed in Germany during the Korean Conlfict; he worked as a Yard Forman and Truck Driver for Lyons Lumber in Joliet until his retirement in 1993, member of the Lockport VFW, American Legion and Moose and a lifelong member of Shepherd of the Hill Lutheran Church in Lockport. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed playing cards with his family and friends.

PAUL JURCA Paul Jurca, was born October 23, 1920, in Tura Luka, Slovakia. In Chicago, he worked at the Jurca family’s business, Turner Dairy. Paul served as Quartermaster aboard the destroyer, U.S.S. Robert H. Smith, during World War II. He married Ann Krc and moved to their farm in Lemont in 1950. Paul worked for Fasano Pie Company for thirty years.

Ann and Paul were blessed with four children, Ann (Jim) Dralle, Paul (Karen) Jurca, John (Marlene) Jurca and Steve (Beverly) Jurca; as well as twelve grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Agnes (Lew) Schwartz.

Lifelong member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. 2014 Backbone Award recipient for his dedication and service to the Joliet American Legion band. Bruce played clarinet with the American Legion Band and the Joliet Junior College Community Band.

ALMA LAUFFER Born: March 4, 1918 Died: March 29, 2015

Alma Hanna Marie Lauffer, was born in Tinley Park, Illinois, March 4, 1918, and went to be with the Lord on March 29, 2015, at the age of 97.

Surviving are her children, Beverly (William) Haas, Wayne (Kathy), Arlene (Walter) Switalski, Carol (Daryl) Regenold, Joyce (James) Burroughs; proud grandmother of 14, great grandmother of 29, and great-great grandmother of 5; also survived by her sister in law, June (Ed) Lauffer; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Clarence (Shorty); infant son, Robert; her parents, Otto and Marie Schilling; her sister, Lucille Rahm; and her mother and father in law, Elizabeth and Louis Lauffer.

After retiring from farming in Tinley Park, Alma was very active in St. John’s UCC Mokena, including teaching Sunday School, the director of Christian Education, Women’s Fellowship, KWIL, and chairman of the annual turkey dinner. She started to work at Lincoln Way Central High School in 1963. She loved to cook and bake, and became head cook in the Lincoln Way kitchen.

Alma became a volunteer at Silver Cross Hospital in 1986. She loved volunteering and made many friends during the 14,000 hours she volunteered there. She had to retire from volunteering in 2012 due to declining health issues. She loved and appreciated her family. She was an inspiration to all who knew her and will be dearly missed by many.

Rosewood massacre activist dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS SPRING HILL, Fla. – Arnett Doctor, a key figure responsible for securing reparations for victims of the Rosewood massacre, has died in the Tampa Bay area following a long illness. He was 72.

A St. Petersburg funeral home says Doctor was found dead in his Spring Hill home Monday.

The 1923 massacre started in the north Florida town after

a married white woman accused a black man of beating her, prompting angry whites to burn nearly every building in Rosewood. At least six blacks and two whites were killed, although some descendants say there were dozens more.

The Tampa Bay Times reported of Doctor helping a reporter in 1982 expose the story.

In 1993, the Florida Legislature approved a bill giving survivors and descendants $2.1 million.

Religious act has Emanuel wooing Indiana businesses

CHICAGO – Mayor Rahm Emanuel has asked Indiana businesses to consider moving to Chicago after Indiana’s governor signed legislation that’s been criticized over concerns it could foster discrimination against gays and lesbians.

Emanuel’s office said Monday that the mayor sent letters to about a dozen businesses in Indiana. The letter cites Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Indiana Gov. Mike Pence signed the measure last week and defended it during a television appearance Sunday.

The act prohibits state laws that “substantially burden” a person’s ability to follow his or her religious beliefs.

In the letter, Emanuel says the act is wrong and urges Indiana business owners to “consider Chicago as a place to move and grow.” Emanuel writes that businesses can’t “succeed in the global economy if you discriminate against your residents.”

CHICAGO – Officials with the Democratic National Committee say President Barack Obama has voted absentee for Mayor Rahm Emanuel in Chicago’s mayoral runoff election.

The committee released a photo Monday morning of Obama

filling out his ballot. Obama said in a statement that “I’m sure everyone knows I’ll be voting for Rahm.” But the president added, “regardless of which candidate you are supporting, please join me in casting a ballot.”

Obama says the election will shape the future “of the city we love.” He says the main issues are jobs, schools and safety.

1 killed, 1 injured in crash on Chicago’s Lower West Side

CHICAGO – Authorities say a Chicago woman was killed and another was critically injured in a crash involving a semitrailer on city’s Lower West Side.

A Chicago Police Department spokeswoman said the crash happened about 5:20 a.m.

Sunday when the vehicle the women were riding in crashed into the semitrailer as it was exiting the Stevenson Expressway.

She said both the driver and passenger in the vehicle were taken to a local hospital.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office said the passenger, 23-year-old Sonia Vargas of the Brighton Park neighborhood, was pronounced dead at 6:08 a.m. at the hospital.

The driver remained in critical condition at the hospital as of Sunday night. Her identity has not been released.

No other injuries were reported in the crash.

An investigation is ongoing.

CHICAGO – The Illinois Attorney General’s office sued the owner of a Chicago remodeling company almost 30 years ago, accusing him of taking money from property owners for work that was either shoddy or never done. Without admitting wrongdoing, Mark Diamond agreed to change his ways.

But authorities say Diamond merely changed up his scheme, continuing what amounted to a nearly three-decade career of scamming hundreds of people – primarily poor, older and African-American – with home repair and mortgage-related frauds.

They accuse him of stripping millions of dollars in equity from homeowners, even as state regulators took away his business license, the Federal Trade Commission and two consecutive attorneys general sued and dozens of homeowners filed lawsuits.

Federal investigators last week executed a search warrant on Diamond’s Chicago office, an FBI spokeswoman confirmed, but no criminal charges have been filed.

How Diamond has managed to remain in business is a frustrating indictment of consumer protection laws and a civil justice system that moves too slowly,

It’s not known if the children’s grandparents, Rev. Duane and Janet Willis, will be on the show.

The band members’ father, Toby Willis, was not in the van when his siblings were killed.

The accident was caused by a part that fell off of a truck, which was operated by a driver who had gotten his trucker’s license through a bribe.

Ryan, who also served as Illinois secretary of state, was caught up in a federal corruption investigation at Secretary of State offices over trading bribes for licenses. He wasn’t charged in the Willis family crash, but there was testimony in his trial about his role in putting an end to investigation into

both prosecutors and consumer advocates say. If determined enough, they say, unethical business people can change corporate entities, reappear with different names and continue the same crimes.

“That’s exactly what’s going on here,” said Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, in an interview with The Associated Press. “This is hands-down one of the most horrific cases that I’ve had to contend with.”

Michelle Weinberg, a lawyer at Chicago’s Legal Assistance Foundation, said she’s seen roughly a half-dozen “repeat players” in consumer fraud schemes over the last 20 years.

She agreed it’s not unusual for it to take a decade or more to stop them.

“It’s very sad, and it’s very frustrating,” said Weinberg, who has represented multiple clients against Diamond.

Madigan said in addition to the civil case and possible criminal charges, her office is working with the Illinois Legislature to pass a bill aimed at better protecting consumers who consider reverse mortgages.

Diamond didn’t attend Monday’s hearing on a 2009 state lawsuit against him. He also didn’t answer repeated phone calls from The Associated Press, and his office appeared closed when the AP tried to visit last week.

By MEREDITH SOMERS and LOLITA C. BALDOR The Associated Press FORT MEADE, Md. – Two men dressed as women smashed a stolen car into a police vehicle after they disobeyed commands at the closely guarded gates of the National Security Agency on Monday, prompting police to open fire.

One of the men died, the other was injured, and a police officer also was taken to a hospital. Details remained unclear hours later. Initial images from the scene showed emergency workers loading the uniformed officer into an ambulance. Nearby were a dark-colored SUV and an SUV emblazoned with “NSA Police,” both heavily damaged.

It was not known why the men wound up at the gate at Fort Meade, a sprawling military post that houses the National Security Agency, or why they did not obey orders from NSA police. Fort Meade is just off Interstate 295 be-

tween Baltimore and Washington.

The men were dressed as women, said a senior defense official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss an ongoing case. It also was unclear exactly what the men were wearing.

The NSA said in a news release that investigators have not yet determined how the man in the vehicle died, and the conditions of the wounded man and officer were not disclosed.

An agency officer gave the driver “routine instructions for safely exiting the secure campus,” but the driver disobeyed them, the release said. The driver then accelerated toward a police vehicle blocking the road, and police then opened fire.

An FBI spokeswoman said earlier in the day that the incident was not believed to be linked to terrorism. The NSA said the incident was contained to the perimeter of the secure campus.

The car that rammed the police vehicle had been stolen Monday morning from a hotel in Jessup, Maryland, said Mary Phelan, a spokeswoman for the Howard County Police Department. She declined to name the hotel, citing the ongoing investigation, or release any further details, referring all questions to the FBI. A strip of hotels, motels and other businesses is less than 10 miles from Fort Meade in Jessup.

The FBI is investigating and working with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Maryland to determine if federal charges are warranted, FBI spokeswoman Amy J. Thoreson said in an email.

It’s not the first time someone has disobeyed orders at an NSA gate.

In July, a man failed to obey an NSA officer’s command to stop as he approached a checkpoint. The man drove away, injuring an NSA officer and nearly striking a barricade. He was later arrested.

In 2012, he suffered a major stroke and underwent many grueling months of recovery learning how to walk and speak, which raised questions about if he would seek a second term. Kirk has said he thinks the stroke raised his profile and that his disability, for which he has to rely on a

cane or wheelchair at times, gives him a unique advantage.

Duckworth has also overcome major physical setbacks. In 2004, she lost both legs and part of an arm after the Black Hawk helicopter she was co-piloting was shot down in Iraq. She also relies on crutches or a wheelchair

at times.

“I view my time now as a bonus and that has allowed me to speak up without fear,” she says in the video where also describes herself as the daughter of a Marine, a wife and a new mom.

She hinted at her platform, mentioning a need for more pre-kindergarten, affordable college loans and a focus on small businesses.

Republicans were quick to pounce on Duckworth’s announcement, with Illinois GOP chairman Tim Schneider accusing her in a statement of being a “partisan politician” and “protege” of imprisoned ex-Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Other Democrats who’ve indicated interest in running in 2016 include U.S. Reps. Bill Foster and Robin Kelly. U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, who had been considering a bid, said Monday that she wouldn’t run and praised Duckworth’s record.

Republicans mulling a run include former tea party U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh.

CHICAGO – Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois announced Monday she’s running for U.S. Senate in 2016, setting up a high-profile challenge to Republican Sen. Mark Kirk’s re-election bid.

“I’m running for the United States Senate in 2016 because it’s time for Washington to be held accountable and to put Illinois’ families and communities first,” she says in a largely autobiographical video posted Monday to her campaign website. “I will fight my heart out to represent you with honor and integrity.”

Duckworth is the first major candidate to announce a challenge to Kirk, and the matchup in Democrat-friendly Illinois could be one of the most competitive nationwide as Democrats battle to regain Senate control.

The Hoffman Estates Democrat is serving a second term in Illinois’ 8th District, which

covers suburbs west and northwest of Chicago. Duckworth is an Iraq war veteran who served as Assistant Secretary of Veterans Affairs under President Barack Obama.

Previously, she was director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs after an unsuccessful bid for Congress in 2006.

Kirk, who won the Senate seat held by Obama in 2010, said through a spokesman Monday that he’s served as a “voice for all the people of Illinois.”

“Sen. Kirk looks forward to a conversation on the issues that matter most to voters across the state including his proven record of thoughtful, independent leadership, and his work each and every day to serve Illinois families,” Kirk spokesman Kevin Artl said. He also noted Kirk’s work on cutting spending and taking on the “Veterans Administration for corruption.”

Police: Auditor spokesman left note before apparent suicide

By DAVID A. LIEB The Associated Press JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Spence Jackson provided the official confirmation a month ago that his boss, Missouri Auditor Tom Schweich, was dead from what police described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On Monday, police confirmed Jackson had shot himself in an apparent suicide – marking a second, stunning jolt to Missouri politics, though police declined to say whether the deaths were directly related.

Jackson was found dead Sunday evening in his home in Jefferson City, police spokesman Capt. Doug Shoemaker said. He said investigators found a note in Jack-

son’s apartment, where the 44-year-old lived alone, but he declined to detail what it said.

Schweich fatally shot himself at his home on Feb. 26, shortly after telling an Associated Press reporter he wanted to go public with allegations that the Missouri Republican Party chairman told people he was Jewish.

Schweich, a Christian with Jewish ancestry, said he perceived the remarks to be part of an anti-Semitic whispering campaign against him ahead of his run for governor.

“We’re very aware of the political issues surrounding Mr. Schweich’s death. And then within a month we have the death of his spokesperson,” Shoemaker said Monday.

• Jobs: When running for president, he had a plan for shovel-ready jobs. What happened to those jobs? Congress approved the Keystone pipeline, which has the potential for a job bonanza. President Obama has vetoed that bill. All I see are people losing their jobs, and take-home pay decreasing.

• Obamacare: It was pushed through by all Democrats even though the people don’t support it. The president seems to lie to the people every time he speaks. But the media have another word for it – he misspoke.

• Defense: President Obama’s pullout of our troops from Iraq led to the formation of ISIS, and it appears the same thing is happening in Afghanistan. How about the fact he is trying to close Guantanamo Bay and let all those prisoners out to renew their fight against us? Then he trades five

of those animals for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, an American traitor. Plus, he has yet to convict anyone for the four Americans killed in Libya. I do not understand why most Democrats cannot see he is trying to ruin our country.

The problem is he has two more years in office to continue his destruction of our nation. How long will it take our children and grandchildren to pay the $18 trillion to $20 trillion we are in debt? Americans better take a close look at who will be our next president.

A look at Aaron Schock’s breathtaking downfall Congressman Aaron Schock’s resignation is not only a blow to national Republicans, for whom Schock raised millions, but also to Illinois Republicans.

Just eight weeks ago, Schock was widely believed to be next in line to chair the National Republican Congressional Committee. But his rapid fall from grace ruined his career and deprived the NRCC of a chance to project a far more youthful public image.

Needless to say, the Illinois House Republicans are heartbroken by this loss. Schock is a former state House member, and he retained quite a bit of personal affection and even admiration by his onetime colleagues and staffers. But it’s the loss of his assistance that will be felt the most. Schock has been very helpful to the point of being almost indispensable to the House Republicans. He’s helped recruit candidates, raised money for them and helped them campaign.

And he was quite successful.

And they’ve used his help and his model to win other districts, including state Reps. Adam Brown and Michael Unes, who both won Democratic-controlled districts with Schock’s assistance in 2010.

The Illinois Republicans don’t remember Schock as the jet-setting, rule-shortcutting playboy he became in Washington, D.C. When he was in Springfield, Schock rarely was seen on the nightlife circuit, often traveling back to Peoria after the day’s session ended to meet with constituents. He always was a young man on a mission; and he seemed to fully understand back then that if he wanted to continue his meteoric rise up the political

ladder, he had to make sure he always was in tune and in touch with the folks back home.

So, what happened here?

Well, the Democrats probably didn’t do him any favors by drawing him the most Republican congressional district in the state. Schock did stay in touch with his constituents via regular trips back home; but with his political safety all but assured, he apparently no longer felt the need to be “in tune” with his district.

And his 24/7 fundraising meant he constantly was hanging out with wealthy people. Personally interacting with people who literally have money to burn can have an overwhelmingly intoxicating effect, particularly on somebody who always strove personally to be rich. We saw much the same thing happen to former Gov. Rod Blagojevich and former Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., who both lived well beyond their means in order to somehow keep up with their rich buddies.

Schock’s first job was in the fifth grade, doing database management for a chain of book stores. He was investing in the stock market when he was barely a teenager. When he was talking about running for governor a couple years ago, he said if he lost, he’d just go make lots of money. Schock always was confident in his own political and financial skills. He just knew he would reach the highest rungs of whatever ladder he climbed.

But that aborted bid for governor forced Schock to rethink his future and focus his sole attention on rising through the congressional ranks. He held a leadership post and looked like he had an eventual straight shot to the very top, but was sidetracked last year when his ally, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, unexpectedly lost his primary election. He then set his sights on the NRCC, and the chairmanship literally was within his grasp.

The complacency caused by Schock’s safe GOP district and his realization that Congress

was the only venue he’d probably ever have for stardom, his single-mindedness about how raising money was his only ticket to the top combined with his personal quest for wealth and his apparent need to emulate the lifestyles of the folks he was raising money from (plus whatever else happened that we don’t know about) all somehow led him to start cutting corners. And when you start doing that, it’s very difficult to stop. Indeed, it often leads to much worse things.

Just ask Rod or Jesse.

And now, Schock is under federal investigation. The final chapter won’t be written on this book for quite a while.

Hopefully, after this is all over, after he has paid his price (if any), Schock can put those truly amazing skills of his to work again for the people he once clearly loved. He’s only 33 years old. He’ll have plenty of time to redeem himself.

JOLIET – If it is fair to label a softball game in March as a statement game, Joliet West had plenty to say Monday afternoon.

The Tigers rode sophomore Kiley Robb’s pitching, a staunch defense and the booming two-run home runs off the bats of sophomore Madi Mulder and senior Alysia Rodriguez to a 4-1 nonconference victory over Providence, which is ranked among the top teams in the Chicago area.

The Celtics (0-1) did not do anything wrong other than catch a West team that was eager for its shot at Providence and did everything well.

“I thought it was a wellplayed game both ways,” Celtics coach Jay Biesterfeld said.

“Their pitcher kept us off balance at the plate. We didn’t hit the ball hard enough most of the day. We couldn’t get the clutch hit, and they got the two big ones.”

Providence junior pitcher Kendal Judge was close to untouchable early. But she walked DeShonte Smith with one out in the second inning, and Mulder made her pay, lofting a 1-2 pitch beyond the left-field fence to give West (20) a 2-0 lead.

“Madi’s home run was huge,” Rodriguez said. “That got us pumped.”

“Madi’s homer was a momentum buster,” Robb said.

“It got us going and got them down.”

Tigers coach Heather Suca said such heroics from Mulder, who was also the regular third baseman as a freshman, are hardly out of character.

“When we need a big hit, Madi comes through,” she said.

Rodriguez added insurance in the fifth inning when she belted a long home run to center field with Kristin Ames, who had walked, on base.

“I never hit one that far in my life,” Rodriguez said.

“I think Alysia’s homer is still going,” Robb said.

“Arianna’s defense was big,” Suca said. “It was huge when she got that out at first in the first inning. I really think we have a strong outfield this year, and that makes a difference.”

Rodriguez had a strong game at shortstop. She handled everything flawlessly and made a highlight-reel play in the sixth inning, diving to stop Maeve Garvey’s ground ball up the middle and managing to touch second in the process for a forceout.

“Our defense saved my butt lots of time today,” Robb said. “It was really strong. I was trying keep them [Celtics] off balance and trust my defense, and they came up big.”

Zoe Bruni and freshman leadoff hitter Taylor Young had two hits apiece for Providence.

“It’s not the way we wanted to start the season,” Biesterfeld said. “But you can’t win them all. We’ll just have to come back and get the next one.”

“I’m excited we beat them,” Rodriguez said. “This win does a lot for us. It sets the bar.

“We really wanted to get the shutout, but I know from playing with her [Greenwood, Rodriguez’s future DePaul teammate] in travel that she always gets at least one hit. It was not surprising that she got a hit there and ruined the shutout.”

Plainfield East gets past Joliet Catholic

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Although the softball teams from Plainfield East and Joliet Catholic Academy had seen limited practice time and only played in one game apiece before Monday’s nonconference matchup, an observer really might not have known that.

That’s because despite the drawbacks from the recent cold and wet weather, both the Bengals and Angels were able to execute well, under the circumstances.

While both managed to make most of the plays in the field while delivering some clutch hits at the plate, East was able to make a few more that helped it claim a 4-2 victory.

“It’s early on, and you don’t know exactly what you’ll get, and we’re trying to get a lot of girls in and out of the game to see what everyone can do,”

Bengals coach Chris Morris said. “I thought that we did a lot of nice things out there, but we still have a lot of things to work on. And JCA has a real nice team, so it was a good game.

“Even though this is a younger group, they’ve been pretty focused, and their attention to detail has been pretty good so far in practice and in games. So at this point, I’m feeling pretty good. Going forward, I don’t know exactly what we’re going to get, but it seems like we’re coming together a little more this season as far as gelling together as a group.”

The Bengals (2-0) moved in front for good in their first at-bat after Jess Rio (3 for 4) led off with a single and then stole second. With Hannah Kalnicky at the plate for a run and hit, Rio took off again and, after an errant throw, came home to make it a 1-0 game.

Meanwhile, East collected six hits in the first four innings but didn’t have more to show for it against Alyssa Callans, who went the distance for the Angels and struck out seven.

The Bengals were able to capitalize on some clutch hitting in the fifth when Rio reached on an infield single and then scored on a two-out triple to center by Kalnicky.

Michaela Sinnott (2 for 3) followed with a double to center to make it a 3-0 game.

“It was really good for us to come out and play like this right away, especially against JCA, since they’re always a good team,” Rio said. “I like the fact that we’ve all already played together, so it’s kind of like a summer team and we know our strengths and weaknesses.

“This is almost the same exact team as last year, except there’s a couple of new players. But we’ve definitely developed as a team. Our biggest issue right now is that we need

to work on our communication. I think that we can make it far this year.”

But East responded by getting a run back in the seventh when Amberly Rodriguez reached on a fielder’s choice and Samantha Pratscher followed with a double to center.

“I’m happy,” Angels coach Dave Douglas said. “It was only our second game of the year, so it’s still learning time.

I thought that we hit the nose on the ball a few times, but we just hit it right at people.

“Their outfield did a great job of catching a couple of balls that were in the gap. It was one of those days that if those get in, all of a sudden we get to run around the bases a little bit.”

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com DES PLAINES – After starting the season with five straight wins against Class 1A and 2A competition, the Morris softball team got a look at one of the area’s most consistent large-school programs Monday in the Rosemont Dome.

Plainfield Central, playing its season opener, defeated Morris, 5-2, behind the pitching of sophomore Brooklyn Daly and timely hitting along the lineup. Morris, meanwhile, played well but came up short.

“It’s good for us to go up against a top 4A school,” Morris coach Jen Lowery said.

“They always go deep into the postseason [three straight regional titles], so for us to hang in there with them all game is pretty good.”

Plainfield Central got on

the board first in the second inning. Gretchen Egly led off with a single, then went to second on a wild pitch. A bunt single by Hannah Franceschini put runners on first and third.

Franceschini then stole second. On the throw, Morris second baseman Leah Lines slipped on the artificial surface, and the ball went into center field, allowing Egly to score and Franceschini to reach third. After a popup to second, Daly delivered a double down the right-field line to score Franceschini for a 2-0 Wildcat lead.

Central made it 3-0 in the fourth. Jenny Newtoff, Daly and Alex Hasenjager all singled to load the bases. Morris pitcher Abby Burns then got a strikeout, but Megan Muldoon blooped a single over the drawn-in Morris infield to score Newtoff. Burns then induced a groundout that forced

Morris got on the board in the top of the fifth. With one out, Amanda Jenkins singled and, an out later, Lines singled to right to move Jenkins to third. Ashley Phelps followed with a single to left to score Jenkins and make the score 3-1.

The Redskins countered with a run in the top of the sixth. Emily Moore led off with a single and went to second on a grounder by Janelle Brehm. Burns walked and, after a strikeout, Jenkins singled to center to score Moore with the final run.

Cook, who had two hits for the Redskins, hit an infield single to deep short to load the bases, but Daly got the next batter out to end the inning. Daly finished with a seven-hitter, struck out six and walked three.

“We were pretty solid all the way around,” Wildcats coach Anne Campbell said.

“Especially for our first game.

We were very solid defensively; and for the first time facing live pitching, we hit the ball well. And Brooklyn did a nice job making pitches on the mound.”

“We made a couple of fundamental errors that cost a couple of unearned runs, but we played well,” Lowery said.

“Plainfield Central is a very good program. Our biggest concern was making contact, but I thought we did a good job of putting the ball in play and executing when we needed to.”

When Minooka dropped an 11-1 decision Saturday to Providence, it was part of the Indians’ 2015 learning process.

For the time being, anyway, they will be battling to solve their puzzle without a key piece.

Junior Joe Butler, Minooka’s No. 1 pitcher and shortstop, suffered a bone chip in his right thumb while playing basketball in January yet finished the winter season. He also may have tendon issues.

He is committed as a pitcher and infielder to Illinois State, which is where the Indians’ other ace, Tyler Paulsen, will pitch his college ball.

Minooka coach Jeff Petrovic said Butler will pitch only for the time being. He will not be able to hit for at least six weeks, and perhaps for the season, depending on what the doctors decide to do when.

“That’s a big obstacle to overcome, our No. 1 pitcher and No. 1 shortstop,” Petrovic said. “It’s great to have him pitch, anyway.”

Some help arrived Monday.

Freshman Hayden Laczynski joined the varsity and played shortstop in Minooka’s 4-2 loss to Lincoln-Way East.

“The freshman made all the plays and was impressive,” Petrovic said.

Cristian Sanchez, who will play at Georgetown, is a solid hitter and glove man. He suffered a groin strain in last week’s opener against Morris.

Petrovic said he has to decide where to play Sanchez while the injury heals.

The coach pointed out the Indians have a good number of returning players. In addition to Butler, Sanchez and Paulsen, he cited second baseman Jake Null, catcher Cole Thompson, first baseman Jon Vesper and pitcher Miguel Ruiz.

“After them, however, we’re struggling to find guys who can make a big impact,” Petrovic said. “Laczynski may be one. Our history is we always start quickly. This year, it may take awhile.”

The ASSOCIATED PRESS MESA, Ariz. – Third baseman Kris Bryant was reassigned by the Cubs to their minor league camp Monday despite an outstanding spring training at the plate, triggering a threat of litigation from the players’ association.

Bryant hit .425 in the exhibition season with nine homers and 15 RBIs in 40 atbats. If the 23-year-old spends 12 or more days in the minor leagues, the Cubs would delay him from becoming eligible for free agency by one year, until after the 2021 season, according to baseball’s collective bargaining agreement.

“Today is a bad day for baseball,” the Major League Baseball Players Association said in a statement. “I think we all know that even if Kris Bryant were a combination of the greatest players to play our game – and perhaps he will be before it’s all said and done – the Cubs still would have made the decision they made today. This decision, and other similar decisions made by clubs will be addressed in litigation, bargaining or both.”

Major League Baseball defended the Cubs’ decision.

“In accordance with long established practice under the Basic Agreement, a club has an unfettered right to determine which players are part of its opening-day roster,” MLB said in a statement.

“This issue was discussed extensively in bargaining in 2011, and the principle was not changed. We do not believe

Blackhawks get big win over Kings

By MATT CARLSON The Associated Press CHICAGO – Defensemen Duncan Keith and Niklas Hjalmarsson scored 1:04 apart in the second period, and the Blackhawks beat the Los Angeles Kings, 4-1, on Monday.

Marian Hossa added a goal and an assist as the Hawks won their second straight game in as many nights and pulled within a point of the second-place Blues in the Central Division.

The Hawks will play St. Louis twice in their final six games.

Jake Muzzin scored for the defending champion Kings, who dropped their second straight in the finale of a fivegame road trip. They also lost ground to Calgary in their bid for the final playoff berth in the West.

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Diabetics last week sampled a mini-smorgasbord of healthful, low-carbohydrate restaurant food at Morris Hospital’s “Dining with Diabetes Fair and Exhibit.”

Hospital dietitians handpicked selections from several Morris restaurant menus.

These included sandwiches, chicken dishes, cookies and muffins.

The idea was to help those with diabetes or pre-diabetes figure out what to order when dining out.

Tips from dietitians

Morris Hospital dietitian and diabetes educator Liz Baker said diabetics have a higher risk for developing many diseases, and they should have their health at the forefront of their eating and lifestyle decisions.

“Controlling carbohydrates is key to achieving good glucose control,” Baker said, “and that is sometimes all about portion control.”

For instance, Baker said a cup of terlingua chili offered at Chili’s Grill & Bar has only 200 calories and 7 grams of carbs. Combine that with a side salad, she added, and you have a nice lunch.

“When you eat out,” Baker said, “look at the menu and choose items that are high in fruit, vegetables and whole grains and low in fat and dairy, and just really watch your portions. ... When traveling, if you stop at a fast-food restaurant, make the best choices you can by ordering things like grilled chicken, leaving off the mayo, and getting healthy sides like apples or yogurt or salads, even if you go through the drive-thru. Keep an open mind when you look at the menu.”

Exercise will be tailored to all fitness levels.

Led by a certified pre/post-natal Pilates specialist, each class will include 15 minutes of educational material specific to the postpartum mom.

Badruddin is Presence Saint Joseph’s Physician of Year The HERALD-NEWS JOLIET – Dr. Aamir Badruddin, medical director of stroke neurology and neuroendovascular surgery, was honored recently by Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center as the Physician of the Year.

Badruddin joined in 2011.

He is board certified in neurology and vascular neurology.

He received his medical degree and completed his residency at Rush University, Chicago.

Badruddin plays a vital role in making PSJMC’s Neuroscience Institute a Will County Primary Stroke Center by being at the forefront of the latest technology such as tele-stroke.

Tele-stroke is a two-way advanced audiovisual technology that allows the endovas-

cular neurologist to remotely assess and interact with the patient and their family, in addition to collaboratively consulting with the on-site physician and nurses. This allows stroke specialists to view the patient from any off-site location through video technology.

Dear Doctor K: I am at increased risk for osteoporosis. Are there any foods or drinks I should avoid?

Dear Reader: Osteoporosis is a bone-weakening condition that increases your risk of fractures.

Though your bones may seem unchanging, they are continuously being broken down and rebuilt.

(I’ve put an illustration of this process on my website, AskDoctorK. com.) Osteoporosis occurs when more bone is broken down than is rebuilt.

Osteoporosis is most common in postmenopausal women, but other people are also at risk.

These include people with thyroid problems or eating disorders, and those who have used oral corticosteroid medications on a long-term basis.

Some foods you eat can make you more likely to get osteoporosis. On the other hand, some foods can reduce your risk.

There is evidence that several common food substances, taken in large amounts, may be harmful to bone health. I wouldn’t call the evidence airtight, but it is strong enough that I’d advise anyone at risk for osteoporosis to limit their intake of these substances: • CAFFEINE. Drinking four or more cups of coffee a day can increase your risk of breaking a bone. The evidence is pretty strong. So, you may want to forgo that fourth cup.

• PROTEIN. High levels of protein, particularly protein from animal sources, may cause bones to lose calcium. This issue is still being investigated, and there is no consensus on how much, if any, protein may be harmful to bones. For now, I wouldn’t worry about protein harming your bones. Of course, as we’ve said here many times, the saturated fats

Dear Abby: My husband and I were chatting recently and the subject of sperm donation came up. He surprised me by saying he’s vehemently against it, and then compared it to selling your body as in prostitution. He also mentioned he thinks it’s disgusting because any kids we would potentially have might end up dating their half-siblings. We let the issue drop, but Abby, I have a secret.

In my early 20s, I participated in an egg donation program to support couples who were unable to get pregnant on their own. At the time, I didn’t think much about it. I didn’t want kids – and I doubt if I ever will – so I figured it was my contribution to the gene pool without having to raise little humans myself.

I never told my husband about it because it happened before we met. I do know that some of my eggs were successfully transplanted.

Should I tell my husband about my donations or keep quiet? We don’t have kids, but are talking about trying in the near future. Would it be wrong for them to go out into the world not knowing about their half-siblings? – Fertile

Aiden is a sweet guy who would do anything for me. I waffled and said I had to think about it. He bought a lovely engagement ring that he still has in his possession.

We do not live together.

Aiden says he’s certain he wants to spend his life with me. My problem is, I don’t want to marry him. I am a professional, and Aiden is a tradesman with no money.
