‘She helped anyone she could’

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Elizabeth “Betty Joy” Benson of Joliet had two favorite sayings: “When you have family, you have everything in the world,” and “Grab a plate.”

And Betty Joy lived by those words.

Her husband, Karl Benson of Joliet, said Betty supported Betty Joy him when he Benson returned from Joliet Vietnam, encouraged him to stop drinking and listened to him talk when he needed it. While Betty Joy scoured estate sales and resale stores for the Italian pottery she loved and collected, she also kept a sharp eye out for Coca-Cola memorabilia, which Karl has collected for decades.

“She’d give the blouse off her back to help you,” Karl said.

With her son, Shane Benson of Joliet, Betty Joy prepared up to 20 different varieties of Christmas cookies each year and distributed them to friends and relatives, Shane said.

He intends to continue the tradition.

Betty Joy was in the delivery room when her daughter, Beth Ann Benson of Joliet, gave birth to her son, Nik

Benson, now 12, and then helped Beth Ann raise him.

Betty Joy also helped Shane and her sister, Gina Lopez of Plainfield, with their children, Beth Ann said. They are Antonio Benson and Christopher, Michelle, Meagan and Brittany Lopez.

“She helped anyone she could,” Shane said. “To know her was to love her. She was a great person.”

Beth Ann added, “She inspired me to be the best mother I could be.”

Betty Joy loved to cook. No one could refuse her fried pork chops and fried potatoes and Shane, who still prepares her recipes, said he’d never tasted roast beef like hers. Beth Ann said her mother, a true Italian, cooked true Italian food.

“In Italy, they top their spaghetti with tomatoes and cheese. There wasn’t red sauce,” Beth Ann said. “When my mom made ravioli or tortellini, she did it with olive oil or butter, garlic and Parmesan cheese.”

Anyone within earshot of the house was encouraged to join the family at meals, even when Karl was laid off, Beth Ann said. For instance, if Betty Joy had only a pack of chicken, she made chicken soup, she said, and she could work magic with a few hot dogs and potatoes.

“If you left hungry, it was

your own fault,” Karl said.

“She didn’t care who you were.

The door was always open.”

“By feeding people,” Beth Ann said, “she was making their lives easier and happier.

My mom tried to help as many people as she could. Just to see a smile on their faces brought her joy.”

Finding a new piece of Capodimonte pottery, especially the uncommon animal shapes, also could brighten Betty Joy’s day. She had pieces that had traveled from Italy, as they had belonged to her grandmother, Beth Ann said, but Betty Joy found others at auctions, garage sales and resale stores.

A favorite piece is a 2-foot working clock Betty acquired five years ago.

However, Karl said, Betty Joy’s “pride and joy” was a 1940 pink, kidney-shaped couch, still in its original plastic, that took six people to carry into the house. Betty Joy was 64 when she died Dec. 23, 2013.

It was Nik’s 12th birthday, Beth Ann said.

“My mom was in the delivery room with me when I had him,” Beth Ann said, “and he was there with her in the hospital when she passed away.”

Proposed tax break aims to stir interest in prison

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Local lawmakers are pushing tax incentives that they hope will stir redevelopment of the old Joliet prison and other shuttered state facilities.

Senate Bill 341, co-sponsored by state Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, and Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, would give tax credits to private developers that take over state-owned surplus properties such as the Collins Street prison, which closed in 2002.

A private investor would receive a state income tax credit

equal to one-third the cost of renovations, McGuire said.

Local officials have been concerned for years about the prison’s future. Despite on-andoff talks of redevelopment, the lack of money, along with a $3.8 million price tag required just to stabilize the complex, has placed things at a standstill.

Joliet Mayor Tom Giarrante said the tax incentive could spur some interest in a new use for the prison and hopes it happens before the facility deteriorates much more.

“The paint is peeling off the walls in chunks. The bars are rusting. It’s not getting any better,” Giarrante said. “The roof

is now leaking and is just going to accelerate the deterioration.”

McGuire said the measure passed by a 56-0 vote in the Senate late last year, and he hopes Walsh Jr. can carry the bill through the House.

Developing the site into a tourist attraction is the ultimate goal from the city’s standpoint, but McGuire said basic environmental concerns must first be addressed.

Soil samples have been taken, he said, noting a previous report by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency found elevated levels of metals in select areas where prison industries once operated.

Challenges to tax-exempt status continue

Will County impact The growth of the health care industry is evident in Will County. The health care and social assistance industry – led by hospitals Silver Cross, Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet and Adventist Midwest Health in Bolingbrook – is the third largest employer, according to the Will County Center for Economic Development.

“When you look at the amount of business our local hospitals do with local business catering, supplies, food, food products and other support services that are acquired locally, they have a large multiplier impact on the economy when it comes to creating value over what they do on a dayto-day business,” said John Greuling, CEO and president of the Will County Center for Economic Development.

“The state is required to determine based on the law and constitution what constitutes charity and we had done so in the case of [Presence Covenant Medical Center], which was denied charitable exemption as it was thought they didn’t provide enough charity for the property taxes they were not paying,” said Susan Hofer, Illinois Department of Revenue spokeswoman.

In 2012, lawmakers worked with the Illinois Hospital Association to set new eligibility requirements for tax-exempt status. Hofer said the new law takes into account the care hospitals provide to Medicare patients, the amount of community outreach they conduct and charitable care they provide.

Hospital association officials announced March 6 they are opposing a bill introduced last May by State Rep. Naomi Jakobsson, D-Champaign. The bill would deny tax-exempt status to hospitals in communities sustaining “disproportionate” losses of tax rev-

enue. It also would take away tax-exempt status for hospitals where net income would amount to 8 percent or more of net revenues even if they were taxed.

While some hospitals provide charitable care, they do so because they are required to and not because they have charitable impulses, said John Colombo, a University of Illinois professor who has studied tax-exempt organizations. He said hospitals should pay property taxes because they’re not anymore a charity than Ford Motors Co. or Microsoft.

“Hospitals are big business, even when they’re nonprofit,” he said.

Colombo said he didn’t agree with the law passed in 2012, but it was better than nothing. The law tightens eligibility requirements somewhat, but it had little do with the concept of hospitals’ charitable activities, he said. Colombo views the new conditions for tax-exempt status at hospitals not much different from tax breaks given to companies that threaten to relocate.

Hospital, said free care is essential to the tax-exempt status, which the hospital gained in recent years.

“If we didn’t give free care and we just paid property taxes, everyone would lose,” he said. “This is a win-win for the community.”

Danny Chun, Illinois Hospital Association spokesman, said hospitals are already hurting from cuts in state and federal funding. The association stated in its report more than one in three Illinois hospitals operate in the red because they have been absorbing more than $11 billion in Medicare payment reduction in the past 10 years.

Joliet Mayor Thomas Giarrante said Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center provides many services for free that people can’t afford. He said the medical center is one of the biggest employers in the city and city officials are looking to create a medical campus near them as part of the city’s plans for economic development.

“They are a good corporate citizen,” he said.

Presence Saint Joseph did not respond to a request for comments.

NEW LENOX – Lisa Drong landed her dream job in an industry touted as stable and recession-proof.

Drong, 42, of Lockport, became a registered nurse for Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox last November after earning her nursing degree from Lewis University and her license last summer.

“The best part about being a nurse is being able to provide quality care and be there for the patients,” she said. “That’s why I wanted to go into nursing. I love helping people.”

Drong is one of hundreds of thousands of people who have found employment in the heath care industry in the past 10 years. The Illinois Hospital Association released a report last week saying hospitals and health care systems have a roughly $83 billion impact on the state’s economy.

Hospitals have benefitted from being tax exempt for years because they provide charity care and community benefits. But that has been challenged by state officials – and may be tested again.

system developed by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, the association reported more than quarter of a million people are employed by Illinois hospitals, which spend $16 billion a year on wages and benefits. The result is a total of roughly 449,800 direct and indirect jobs and an economic impact of $38.6 billion from payroll alone.

For Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, its latest economic impact report showed a $249 million impact in 2012 for the communities it serves. Silver Cross Hospital’s latest report showed an estimated total economic impact of $1.15 billion in 2012.

New Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann said the effect that Silver Cross has on the village’s economy is tremendous. Not only are hundreds of people employed at Silver Cross, but the hospital’s presence makes that stretch of U.S. Route 6 viable for future commercial development, Baldermann said.

“From an economic standpoint, it’s definitely a huge plus to have Silver Cross,” he said.

According to its latest community benefit report in 2012, Presence Health – group that owns Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet – had more than 22,000 employees and provided $52.3 million in free or discounted health services. It also provided $7.6 million in community health improvement initiatives and $11.3 million in the cost of providing clinical services.

A separate report for the Joliet hospital was not available.

BY DAWN AULET Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – An estimated 300 people came out Sunday to get into the Guinness Book of World Records with a hip-hop dance.

Making Guinness, unfortunately, required 1,000 dancers.

But it was all right, said students from the University of St. Francis who organized the mass hip-hop effort at Joliet Memorial Stadium. What mattered most to them was creating an event in which anyone could participate.

“It doesn’t matter if we don’t get 1,000 people,” organizer Brandon Collefello said while people were still arriving for the dance.

“We wanted to do an inclusive event so that anyone could be a record-setter,” Fellow organizer Chelsea Rimington elaborated.

Rimington is an education major. Other organizers were Katie Hayes, a special education major, and Allison Rhodes, a therapeutic recreation major.

Anne-Christine Tompkins, a USF student and roommate with organizer Hayes, brought her whole family. Her mother, Mariangela, is also an alumna.

Caroline Portlock, executive director of the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce and USF graduate, also was in attendance.

“It is important that they [the student organizers] know they have the support of the alumni,” she said.

Construction season arrives Chart VIEWS Kris Stadalsky They say there are two seasons in Illinois – winter and construction season.

Well, construction season is upon us and along with it come some precautionary measures for staying safe from now until the snow flies in November.

While all construction zones deserve the same respect, the biggest concern in the southwest area is Interstate 55 over the Des Plaines River Bridge.

From May 13 through Nov. 23, 2013, Channahon Fire Protection District responded to 22 incidents related to that construction. Emergency responders had contact with 74 patients, conducted three heavy extractions and had one fatality, Fire Chief John Petrakis said.

Two of the biggest concerns for the I-55 construction are cellphone use and people not familiar with the area and construction, according to Petrakis.

While you may be aware of the lane changes and traffic backups, others traveling along I-55 are not, which means we have to be extra vigilant and drive more carefully.

Petrakis recommends three key tips when driving in any construction zone.

• Manage your speed by slowing down, following posted limits and leaving earlier to travel that route.

• Manage your space by leaving more room between vehicles, not passing on the shoulder and watching out for tailgaters.

• Manage your stress by paying attention, expecting delays and keeping your cool with both other drivers and the delay.

“You have to have height-

ened awareness in construction zones,” Petrakis said.

“It’s all part of being aware of what is going on around you at all times.”

Petrakis and the Illinois Department of Transportation also remind everyone about the law banning handheld cellphone use, which took effect Jan. 1. Except in an emergency, cellphone use in Illinois is allowed only for speakerphones and headsets that feature voice-activated or one-digit dialing while driving.

Roadwork over the river is scheduled to begin today, weather permitting, with the closure of one southbound lane. One northbound lane will be closed beginning near mid-April, and traffic crossovers are set to begin after that to allow work on the northbound section of the bridge. Anticipated completion for the entire project is Sept. 1, according to IDOT. The electronic signs will be used again this year, updating drivers of travel times and stopped conditions throughout the work zone.

Extra state troopers will be enforcing speed zones and cellphone violations.

If you encounter an accident within the construction zone, or anywhere for that matter, Petrakis says to slow down and be prepared to stop if necessary, discontinue use of cellphones and be attentive to incoming and present emergency vehicles and responders.

When I was learning to drive in Michigan, there was a promotion that constantly reminded drivers to “Watch out for the other guy.” That still holds true and could make the difference between a safe and unsafe trip anywhere.

John Raymond Egly, Jr., age 85, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, March 28, 2014, with his family at his side.

Born on January 24, 1929, he was a lifelong resident of Joliet. He graduated from Joliet Township High School in 1947. He was a member of Stone Hill Bible Church (Larkin Baptist) where he served in various capacities including Chairman of the Board of Trustees, member of the Building Committee, Treasurer, and AWANA leader. He was a Boy Scout/Cub Scout Master. He worked at Material Service as an electrical superintendent for 35 years. He was a devoted family man, a mister fixit, and an avid wood working craftsman. His family remembers him as a fun-loving husband and father. During the summer, he drove his family to vacation locations including Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, and other National parks.

His children and grandchildren are grateful that despite his hectic work schedule, he always left time to play with and support them.

RAYMOND E. GRIFFIN Raymond Eugene Griffin, of Joliet, peacefully joined his Savior, after a long fight with Alzheimer's, on the evening of January 30, 2014 in Perry, Michigan. His family will miss his Christ-like example as a dad and grandpa. He was 87.

Survived by his two sons, William (Patrice) of Joliet and Rev. Gary (Joy, nee Morris) of Fowlerville, MI; six grandchildren, Craig, Heather (Gabe) Furgason, Chad, Nicholas (Melanie), Tina (Nick) Pucel and Heidi (Phil) Clark; and three greatgrandchildren, Makiyah, Elijah and Norah.

ROGER A. KAMINSKI Born: May 30, 1952; in Lemont, IL Died: March 27, 2014; in Lacoochee, FL Roger A. Kaminski, born on May 30, 1952, in Lemont, IL, passed away on March 27, 2014, in Lacoochee, FL, after a brief illness.

His loving wife Marion never left his side. He attended SS Cyril and Methodius School in Lemont and Providence High School in New Lenox. Studying music and education, Roger graduated from Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL, in 1975. He then relocated to Florida and attended the University of Tampa earning a masters degree in Education Administration in 1978. After over 30 years in education Roger retired from the Pasco County School District in Florida in 2010, but continued to educate and guide young people through his selfless service to his community.

Roger was an inspiration to

everyone who knew him. Generous with his time and talent, he was an active leader in church youth ministries and music. In 2003, Roger and his wife Marion cofounded the Tri-County Fellowship of Christian Leaders, a non-profit organization dedicated to building community and creating familyfriendly environments where kids, teens, and adults can come together for fellowship, friendship, support, and community service.

Their organization?s Christian Edge Coffee House in Lacoochee, FL, and the recently opened Christian Edge Dream Center in Dade City, FL, serve as such gathering places.

There, community members of all ages participate in music, art, and dance classes as well as community service, local business services, and meal programs to assist families in their local area. As the driving force of the Tri-County Fellowship, Roger scouted gathering spaces, hammered, nailed, painted, procured musical instruments and art supplies, fundraised for furniture and equipment, organized youth programs, taught free music classes, sang, laughed, and loved at Christian Edge and Christian Dream Center. This was Roger's calling. He dedicated his life, his heart, and his soul to God, his family, and his community.

Preceding Roger in death are his parents Estelle and Edwin “Bud” Kaminski.

He is survived by his loving wife Marion (nee Durden), devoted sons Benjamin and Daniel, brother Earl (Mary) Kaminski, sisters Diane (John) Taskay and Claire (Paul) Cimino, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends in Florida who called him their Brother.

Roger's kindness, loving nature, humor, and compassion will be missed by all.

Services for Roger A. Kaminski will be held in Dade City, Florida. He will be laid to rest on March 31, 2014, at Chapel Hill Gardens in Dade City.

A late February audit said the NRI program was so hastily organized and sloppily executed that auditors questioned 40 percent of expenditures claimed by service providers.

State Sen. Dan Kotowski, a Senate appropriations committee chair who has been critical of the handling of the program, said he personally got a call from the governor’s office to be informed that the program was getting cut.

In an emailed statement, Pallasch said that “not every program gets funded every year. This year, we’re focusing investments in after-school programs and early childhood education.

The legislation, which was approved by a House committee last week, would require state grants to be monitored and audited by the same federal guidelines that federal grants are.

Crespo cited recent abuses of state grants, including the Neighborhood Recovery Initiative, to the Associated Press, as reason to push the legislation.

••• The Office of the State Fire Marshal is getting a 28 percent boost to $40.7 million, largely because of an $8 million increase to help local fire departments buy trucks, Spokeswoman Milly Santiago said.

The 10-year-old Fire Truck Revolving Loan Fund provides no-interest loans of up to $250,000 to fire departments to buy fire trucks. The departments must repay the principal at a rate of at least 5 percent a year for 20 years.

SPRINGFIELD – Much of the focus of Gov. Pat Quinn’s election-year budget address was on his proposal to make Illinois’ temporary income tax permanent in order to avert cuts to education and other areas.

But buried in the 514-page blueprint released by the governor’s office Wednesday are several other less-publicized proposals revealing his priorities in the year ahead. Quinn proposes to wipe out funding for an anti-violence program, reopen two shuttered corrections facilities and boost funding to his own office, among other plans.

“The devil is in the details,” state Rep. Bob Pritchard, the House minority spokesman on education, said following the speech. The Republican from Hinckley said he “liked the governor’s priorities” but objected to keeping the state’s temporary income tax increase in place to pay for the $36.8

billion spending plan, which makes few new cuts.

While lawmakers are not required to listen to Quinn’s suggestion, the governor’s budget address sets the tone for the budget negotiations that will continue during the spring session.

Democrats, who have supermajority control in both chambers, have an added incentive to maintain a unified front on the budget plan as they look ahead to key November matchups, including the governor’s race.

Republicans are vowing to fight Quinn’s plan to permanently enact a 67 percent tax increase that originally was promised to be temporary.

Here are some of the key components of the plan: ••• Quinn’s budget suggests repurposing two recently closed youth correctional centers as adult lockups to address “current corrections needs,” assistant budget director Abdon Pallasch said.

SEATTLE – People living in the path of a deadly Washington state landslide had virtually no warning before a wall of mud, trees and other debris thundered down the mountain.

Some of the homeowners didn’t even know the hillside could give way at any time.

Unlike the warning systems and elaborate maps that help residents and officials prepare for natural disasters such as floods and hurricanes, there’s no national system to monitor slide activity and no effort underway to produce detailed nationwide landslide hazard maps.

The U.S. Geological Survey doesn’t track or inventory slide areas on a national scale, despite an ambitious plan to do so more than a decade ago when Congress directed it to come up with a national strategy to reduce landslide losses.

That’s left states and communities to put together a patchwork of maps showing landslide hazards. In some cases, they are discovering that more buildings than previously thought are sitting on unstable ground. Even then, that information may not make its way to property owners.

Building a nationwide system is now possible with new technology, experts say, but would require spending tens of millions of dollars annually and could take more than a decade to complete with the help of states and cities. So far, however, there has been little public outcry for faster, concerted action.

“No one has pushed it, and it hasn’t been a priority,” said

Scott Burns, a geology professor at Portland State University. “It’s costly to monitor it, and we don’t want to pay for it.”

He added, “Now they’re seeing these large disasters and saying this is important.”

The challenge, experts say, is that many landslides are inactive or cause consistent low-level damage, while big, destructive landslides happen only sporadically and don’t cause the type of spectacular devastation hurricanes, earthquakes or tornadoes do – so they often don’t get the same attention or resources.

Despite this, landslides have exacted a toll in all 50 states, causing 25 to 50 deaths a year and up to $2 billion in losses annually. The last national map, which shows high landslide risk areas in the Appalachians, the Rockies and along the West Coast, was published in 1982.

The lack of attention on landslides comes as experts say increasing numbers of people are moving farther out from cities and suburbs – or onto previously uninhabited slopes within them – and are more likely to come face to face not just with the views they sought but also with nature’s destructive forces. Development on vulnerable land can disturb soil, put too much weight on slopes or increase soil moisture, whether it is from runoff or a prolific sprinkler system.

Lynn Highland, a geographer with the USGS’s National Landslide Information Center, said she and others have advocated for a national landslide inventory, but the agency’s Landslide Hazards Program only has an annual budget of $3.5 million and a staff of about 20.

Egyptians to elect new president in May

By SARAH EL DEEB The Associated Press CAIRO – Egypt’s presidential election will be held in late May, the electoral commission announced Sunday, finally setting dates for the crucial vote widely expected to be won by the country’s former military chief who ousted an elected president last year.

The commission set the first round of voting for May 26 and 27, with results expected by June 5. If a second round is necessary, it will be held by mid-month with results announced no later than June 26, the commission said.

mer military chief Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who led the overthrow of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi last summer, has announced his bid for office and is widely expected to win. His victory would restore a tradition of presidents from military backgrounds that Egypt had for all but one year since 1952, when officers overthrew the monarchy and became the dominant force in politics.

A mostly conscript force that fought four wars with Israel, the army has a strong support base among the population, many of whom see it as a pillar of the country’s identity.

Morsi was removed from office July 3, amid massive protests demanding his resignation and accusing him of monopolizing power and mismanagement in the face of myriad economic and social problems. The military, led by el-Sissi, stepped in to remove Morsi and backed a political road map that promised presidential and parliamentary elections.

But the country’s division only grew with Morsi’s ouster.

His backers, largely Islamists and sympathizers, have held near daily protests demanding his reinstatement, describing the military overthrow of Morsi as a coup. Youth groups who

Seabed of jet hunt zone mostly flat with 1 trench The ASSOCIATED PRESS WELLINGTON, New Zealand – Two miles beneath the sea surface where satellites and planes are looking for debris from the missing Malaysian jet, the ocean floor is cold, dark, covered in a squishy muck of dead plankton and – in a potential break for the search – mostly flat.

The troubling exception is a steep, rocky drop ending in a deep trench.

The seafloor in this swath of the Indian Ocean is dominated by a substantial underwater plateau known as Broken Ridge, where the geography would probably not hinder efforts to find the main body of the jet that disappeared with 239 people on board three weeks ago, according to seabed experts who have studied the area.

Australian officials on Friday moved the search to an area 680 miles to the northeast of a previous zone as the mystery of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 continued to confound. There is no guarantee that the jet crashed into the new search area. Planes that have searched it for two

days have spotted objects of various colors and sizes, but none of the items scooped by ships has been confirmed to be related to the plane.

The zone is huge: about 123,000 square miles, roughly the size of Poland or New Mexico. But it is closer to land than the previous search zone, its weather is much more hospitable – and Broken Ridge sounds a lot craggier than it really is.

And the deepest part is believed to be 19,000 feet, within the range of American black box ping locators on an Australian ship leaving Sunday for the area and expected to arrive in three or four days.

Formed about 100 million years ago by volcanic activity, the ridge was once above water. Pulled under by the spreading of the ocean floor, now it is more like a large underwater plain, gently sloping from as shallow as about 2,625 feet to about 9,843 feet deep. It got its name because long ago the movement of the Earth’s tectonic plates separated it from another plateau, which now sits about 1,550 miles to the southwest.

Much of Broken Ridge is covered in a sediment called foraminiferal ooze, made of plankton that died, settled and was compacted by the tremendous pressure from the water above.

“Think like it’s been snowing there for tens of millions of years,” said William Sager, a professor of marine geophysics at the University of Houston in Texas.

Like snow, the layer of microscopic plankton shells tends to smooth out any rises or falls in the underlying rock. In places, the layer is up to half a mile deep.

But if the fuselage of the Boeing 777 did fall on to Broken Ridge, it would not sink much into the muck.

“The surface would be soft, it would squeeze between your toes, but it’s not so soft that you would disappear like snow,” Sager said.

“Something big like pieces of an airplane, it’s going to be sitting on the surface.”

Searchers will be hoping that if the latest area turns out to be where the plane crashed the fuselage did not go down on the southern edge of Broken Ridge.

El-Sissi said he will work to “fight every day for Egypt free of fear and terror.” The Brotherhood and allies have said his nomination for office would only increase instability in the country.

A wave of violent attacks by suspected Islamic militants against police and military have spiked since Morsi’s ouster, killing over 400 troops and police, according to government figures. The interim government blames Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood for orchestrating the violence, a claim the group denies.

Test accurately rules out heart attacks in the ER

By MARILYNN MARCHIONE The Associated Press WASHINGTON – A simple test appears very good at ruling out heart attacks in people who go to emergency rooms with chest pain, a big public health issue and a huge worry for patients.

A large study in Sweden found that the blood test plus the usual electrocardiogram of the heartbeat were 99 percent accurate at showing which patients could safely be sent home rather than be admitted for observation and more diagnostics.

Of nearly 9,000 patients judged low risk by the blood test and with normal electrocardiograms, only 15 went on to suffer a heart attack in the next month, and not a single one died.

Dr. Nadia Bandstein of the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm helped lead the study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and presented Sunday at the cardiology college’s annual conference in Washington.

Chest pain sends more than 15 million people to emergency rooms in the United States and Europe each year, and it usually turns out to be due to anxiety, indigestion or other

less-serious things than a heart attack. Yet doctors don’t want to miss one – about 2 percent of patients having heart attacks are mistakenly sent home.

People may feel reassured by being admitted to a hospital so doctors can keep an eye on them, but that raises the risk of picking up an infection and having expensive care they’ll have to pay a share of, plus unnecessary tests.

The study included nearly 15,000 people who went to the Karolinska University hospital with chest pains over two years. About 8,900 had low scores on a faster, more sensitive blood test for troponin, a substance that’s a sign of heart damage. The test has been available in Europe, Asia and Canada for about three years, but it is not yet available in the United States.

The patients were 47 years old on average and 4 percent had a previous heart attack.

About 21 percent of them wound up being admitted.

Researchers later looked back to see how the blood test and electrocardiogram would have predicted how they fared over the next month.

They figured that in order to find one heart attack in patients like this, 594 would have to be admitted – a huge waste of resources.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Gratitude to the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office To the Editor: I am writing to you today in regards to the sentencing of Fidencio Castillo on March 28, 2014. On Aug. 3, 2012, Mr. Castillo was driving his car while under the influence of alcohol when he hit my daughter, Kayla, who was walking along the roadway with a friend.

I’d like to start by expressing my deepest gratitude to the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office for all the time and hard work they have put into this case. On behalf of all of Kayla’s friends and family I’ll say that we feel that Judge Bertani-Tomczak has given a fair and just sentencing in this case. This must have been a very hard case to preside over. We thank and praise Judge Bertani-Tomczak for her willingness to serve the good people of Will County in this capacity.

As far as my thoughts toward Fidencio Castillo, he has claimed that he is a “changed man.” In

court he has stated that this situation has caused him to re-evaluate his life and he has changed it for the better. We all hope that this is actually true. All too often people make these statements in court for no other reason than to try to get a lighter sentence. We hope and pray that in his case he actually means it. Fidencio has an opportunity available to him that a “changed man” would recognize and take advantage of. He could emerge from his time in prison as a highly educated individual ready to walk the path of righteousness and serve his fellow man. It is a choice only he can make. We hope and will pray that he takes the high road.

Why questions matter To the Editor: Evergreen Terrace has recently become a subject of much debate in the Joliet community and at city council meetings. I believe these conversations are healthy and ben-

eficial, following years of relative silence on the matter.

The ongoing issue is the city is taking legal action to take control of Evergreen Terrace in order to curtail alleged mismanagement on the part of its current owners.

Some of my fellow councilmen and I have questioned the lack of transparency from the city when discussing this issue and the absence of a plan for how we will fund and manage the property in the event we are successful in the current lawsuit.

This is not a call to abandon our litigation against the owners of Evergreen Terrace. I fully support seeing the lawsuit to its conclusion. At this stage, there is no workable policy alternative. However, we need to know what the cost will be to taxpayers and how the city will provide the necessary resources to effectively manage the property for the benefit of its residents.

Joliet Central to rely on the little things Steelmen hope to score more runs to support staff

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Central baseball coach Tony Juarez said the Steelmen’s schedule this season, potentially, is a bit more friendly to the winloss record.

But with the awful weather and field conditions, some nonconference games that were added against more beatable opponents are being postponed or canceled.

While conditions are the same for everyone, Central is in need of early victories more than most. The Steelmen were 3-31 a year ago and feel they need something to show for their labors.

Perhaps good things will happen regardless.

“We are more athletic than last year,” Juarez said. “Our top four pitchers are seniors. I like what we can do defensively and on the mound.

“The question is like last year – will we score runs? We have more speed. We’ll hitand-run more. Last year, we lost seven one-run games and they were 3-2, 2-1 type games.

We didn’t win in our conference [the highly regarded SouthWest Suburban Blue] ,but we had a few games where we were right there.”

Juarez acknowledged the Steelmen will not hit the ball out of the park much, so they won’t sit back waiting for those fireworks. Instead, they plan to take the game one sit-

“We have more depth, more competition for positions this year,” Carlson said.

“If we keep doing our drills and listen to the coaches, we’ll be fine.

“We do need to produce more runs, though. We do that, and then we’ll get some wins.”

“We have to play more as a team,” Goetchel said. “I’ll sacrifice myself for someone else if it helps the team.”

Of course, baseball usually comes down to the man in the center of the diamond.

Goetchel and Carlson, both middle-of-the-lineup hitters, are two of Central’s best.

“I felt like I pitched OK last year, but I could have done better,” Goetchel said. “I’ve been working on location.

Last year, I wanted to get my pitches over. This year, I want to hit spots.”

“At the end of the summer I was at my best,” Carlson said of his pitching. “I’ve been working on the location of my fastball, getting command.”

If working on the little things in each situation pays off, Goetchel, Carlson and the rest of the staff will see what it’s like to pitch with some offensive support. That, they would welcome.

Don’t expect that to change in 2014, as the Celtics will again trot out one of the top staffs around. Providence pitchers return 12 wins from a team that went 20-18 last season and won a regional title.

It starts with senior Jake Godfrey, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound righty who went 4-5 last season, despite a 1.99 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 61 innings.

Expect Godfrey’s name to be featured prominently in June when Major League Baseball holds its annual draft. That happens when you are still in high school and have had your fastball clocked at 94 mph, such as Godfrey has.

If his name isn’t called, or if it’s not called as early as he would like, Godfrey will play for Notre Dame next spring.

Backing him up in the rotation will be Dylan Rosa, who was 3-2 with a 2.62 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 29 innings last season. Rosa also will be key to the Celtics’ offense, as he batted .309 with 13 RBIs last year as a third baseman. Another key cog in the pitching staff is junior Brent Villasenor, who was 2-0 last

The mainstay of the lineup will most likely be outfielder Phil Kunsa, who returns after a season that saw him hit .333 with eight home runs and 33 RBIs. of returning starters to build around offensively. Other key players returning for Providence are senior catcher Richard Yusa, who was injured in 2013, senior outfielder Matt Payton, who hit .375 last year, senior infielder Craig Dankovich (.289) and sophomore infielder Mike Madej (.258).

“2014 could be a nice year for us,” Smith said. “We have many key players returning from last year’s regional championship team. We will

be a senior-led team with eight players already committed to play college baseball.

“Jake Godfrey is getting national attention as a potential high draft pick in this June’s MLB draft. The biggest key for us will be whether we can generate enough offense.”

Some of the top newcomers for the Celtics include senior outfielder Ben Salvador, sophomore infielder Jackson Stulas and sophomore infielder Zack Pych.

USF women take third at own golf invite STAFF REPORTS LOCKPORT – The University of St. Francis women’s golf team opened its 2014 spring season with a third-place finish at the eight-team USF Spring Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Prairie Bluff Golf Course. The Saints finished the 36-hole event with a team score of 678 (340-338) to finish behind champion Bethel (Ind.) College (328-321-649) and runner-up Olivet Naza-

rene University (324-335-659).

Maricar Nones led the Saints and finished sixth among 42 golfers with a 36-hole score of 164. After shooting 83 in Friday’s first round, she fired an 81 – the fourth-best round of the day – on Saturday.

Krystal Garritson (Lockport) and Ashley Howard (Wilmington) also notched top10 finishes. Garritson claimed eighth with a two-day score of 170 (87-83), while Howard

shared ninth (88-83-171). Mary Jackson (86-87-173), Liz Healy (90-90-180) and Becky Grynevich (Lincoln-Way East) (98-99197) rounded out the Saints’ field.

In Game 2, JJC trailed by three entering the top of the seventh, but a bases-loaded triple by Alex Bebar (Minooka) highlighted a seven-run rally.

Bebar was 3 for 5 with four RBIs. Tyler Thorson (Minooka) and T.J. Condon (Minooka) also had three hits.

UConn upsets Michigan State

By RACHEL COHEN The Associated Press NEW YORK – Shabazz Napier owed UConn.

He could have transferred when academic sanctions barred the Huskies from the NCAA tournament his junior season. But the guard wanted to pay back the school for the joy of a national title his freshman year, for his struggles as a sophomore.

Napier sure did that Sunday, carrying UConn back to the Final Four in front of thousands of roaring Huskies fans at Madison Square Garden. He scored 17 of his 25 points in the second half in a 60-54 upset of fourth-seeded Michigan State.

The East Regional’s most outstanding player hit three huge free throws with 30.6 seconds left, making clutch shot after clutch shot just as Kemba Walker did when Napier was a freshman. The Huskies (30-8) rallied from a nine-point second-half deficit to become the first No. 7 seed to reach the Final Four since the tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985.

“His will to win – you could

just see it,” said Gary Harris, who led Michigan State with 22 points. “He wasn’t going to let his team lose.”

The Spartans’ seniors become the first four-year players recruited by Tom Izzo to fail to make a Final Four.

“As the game got closer and closer to ending, it was on my mind a lot, every huddle,” said big man Adreian Payne, who had 13 points and nine rebounds but was repeatedly pushed to the perimeter by UConn’s defenders.

The undersized Huskies matched Michigan State’s physical play box out for box out, holding the Spartans (29-9) to just six offensive rebounds and six points in the paint.

“We’re physical, too,” said second-year coach Kevin Ollie. “Don’t get it mixed up. We are predators out there.”

UConn dared Michigan State to shoot 3-pointers, and the Spartans nearly made enough, going 11 for 29 from behind the arc. Harris was 4 for 9 on 3s, but his teammates were a combined 10 for 32 from the floor.

Emotional Busch wins STP 500

By HANK KURZ JR. The Associated Press MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Kurt Busch’s Sunday at Martinsville Speedway, in some ways, was like his career wrapped into one afternoon.

It started with a pit road confrontation with Brad Keselowski, one that had Busch threatening over his radio to rearrange Keselowski’s face when the race was finished, and ended with Busch ending an 83-race victory drought.

The victory was his first for Stewart-Haas Racing, in just their sixth race together, suggesting that it could prove a very productive partnership and one that a reflective Busch said he has learned to approach with a more mature attitude.

“I ran a lot of my early part of my career as an individual and I didn’t respect my team, my team owners,” Busch said,

adding that having Tony Stewart as a team owner has helped him learn the value of better team communication.

Celebrating in Victory Lane also was emotional, too, because he got to do it for the first time with his son, Houston.

“It was pretty emotional.

To see him starry eyed and not knowing what he needed to do and I was directing him where he needed to stand and where he could see it all better and put him up on stage,’” Busch said, his voice cracking. “And to have him break down in tears, it got me crossed up because I’ve been trying to deliver for him ... It kind of took it to a new level.”

Busch did it by passing Martinsville master Jimmie Johnson for the lead with 10 laps to go and holding off the eighttime winner to win at the track for the first time since October 2002.

Kentucky wins on last-second shot

By EDDIE PELLS The Associated Press INDIANAPOLIS –Aaron Harrison made a 3-pointer from NBA range with 2.3 seconds left Sunday to lift Kentucky and its freshmen to a 75-72 win over Michigan and a trip to the Final Four.

After Harrison’s teammate, Julius Randle, inadvertently tipped in the tying shot on Michigan’s previous possession, the eighth-seeded Wildcats got the ball to the 6-foot-6 guard, whose twin brother, Andrew, is another of the five freshmen in Kentucky’s starting lineup.

Standing a good three feet behind the arc, Harrison elevated over Caris LeVert and took a bit of contact on the arm from the Michigan guard as he shot. No matter. The shot rattled in, and for the second straight game in the Midwest Regional, Harrison had the go-ahead points in a tense game for the Wildcats.

In this one, he scored all 12 of his points off four 3-pointers over the last 8:05.

“I hit a couple before that, so coach said to get the shot we were looking for,” Harrison said. “They put it in my hands and I wanted to deliver for them out there.”

Nik Stauskas missed a halfcourt heave at the buzzer for second-seeded Michigan (28-9), and moments later, Harrison was under a dog pile – or make that a puppy pile.

This is the first all-freshman starting lineup to make the Final Four since another wellknown group, the Fab Five of Michigan, did it in 1992.

“I’m gonna see everyone in Dallas this year,” coach John Calipari said, with his version of a Texas twang, as he addressed the crowd before the nets came down.

The Wildcats will play Wisconsin next Saturday outside of Big D. Stauskas finished with 24 points for the Wolverines, who finished a win shy of their second straight Final Four.

Taking backyard Frisbee to new heights Plainield man and his border collie to compete in eastern regional freestyle lying disc competition

So said Mark Faragoi of Plainfield, founding member of the Midwest Disc Dogs Club, when he decided to train his dogs to compete in competitive disc events.

Now past the “learning curve,” Faragoi, on April 5, will compete in the invitation-only Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge Eastern Regional in Atlanta with his 3-year-old border collie, Riley, whom Mark met at a competition.

“This is the most exciting email I have ever gotten since I’ve been in this sport,” Faragoi said of his invitation. “I had always hoped for it in the back of my mind. I can’t wait to be a part of it.”

In a prepared statement, Jim Allen, manager of experiential marketing for Purina PetCare, said recommendations from Purina Pro Plan experts, the brand’s relationships and support of canine sporting groups and organizations around the country help identify potential competitors.

Other interested individuals, Allen said, may attend an open qualifier the day before each event for Diving Dog and Freestyle Flying Disc.

The winner automatically earns a place in that Incredible Dog Challenge, Allen said.

According to a news release from event’s marketing company, dogs also will compete in the following “Olympic-style” events: dog diving, head-to-head pole weaves, Jack Russell hurdle racing and agility. Winning automatically qualifies competitors for the national competition scheduled for October in St. Louis.

“It was amazing to watch dogs catch Frisbees and jump off people’s backs,” Faragoi said. “It looked like the coolest dog sport.”

So, Faragoi brought Frisbees in three different styles to get Lucky interested and started researching the sport, even attending seminars for additional information.

Training himself, Faragoi said, was easier than training Lucky, as Faragoi can train as long and hard as he

“You don’t want to burn out your dog,” Faragoi said.

At a competition with Lucky in Indiana, a volunteer from a dog rescue who had watched the action, set a 9-week-old black and white border collie puppy into Fara-

goi’s arms and said, “This is the puppy you need.” Suddenly, Lucky had a sibling.

“How do you say ‘no’ to the cutest border collie puppy in the world?” Faragoi said.

Faragoi started Riley with basic obedience, then a few tricks, and finally when she was 6 months old taught her to catch.

For general conditioning, Faragoi tosses tennis balls for “no more than half an hour” (with periodic breaks), takes the dogs hiking and, in bad weather, lets them loose on the treadmill for 20 minutes, although Riley, Faragoi said, given her druthers, would run on the machine for hours.

“She loves it,” Faragoi said. “Whenever we go down to the basement, Riley jumps on it and wags her tail, waiting for me to turn it on.”

The dogs “get quite hot” during summer training, so to cool them down, Faragoi lets them swim in nearby ponds.

Overall, both dogs are extremely fast, Faragoi said, but two characteristics make Riley a better competitor: she’s efficient and consistent, a “total athlete.”

“She doesn’t miss many Frisbees,” Faragoi said.

Faragoi’s wife, Tara, a schoolteacher, as well as their children, Hannah, 11, Bradley, 10, and Lucas, 7, who sometimes help with training and at competitions, wish they could accompany Faragoi and Riley, but not at the expense of all three missing school, Faragoi said. He’s leaving April 4 and returning home immediately after the competition.

In the meantime, Faragoi can’t wait to showcase his and Riley’s two-minute routine, which is choreographed to music.

“She’ll be jumping off my back and catching multiple Frisbees,” Faragoi said, “and doing tricks people have never seen before.”

“The Humane Society of the United States has become more politicized and more courageous in the last 10 years,” Cromwell said. “I support them and am honored to be receiving this.”

During Saturday’s gala, California Gov. Jerry Brown will get the Humane Governor Award for bills he’s approved, including one that ended the use of lead shot.

Lead bullets left behind were being consumed by wildlife, putting more than 200 species in jeopardy, said HSUS spokesman Alan Heymann.

Gabriela Cowperthwaite will receive the HSUS Impact Award for “Blackfish,” the documentary about orcas at SeaWorld. The theme park company disputes the film’s claim that keeping orcas in captivity is harmful to the animals or their trainers, but Cho said the film represents “the first time anyone has shed a global spotlight on captive orcas.”

LOS ANGELES – In 1954, the Humane Society of the United States was founded with borrowed money by a small group of people who wanted to protect animals, end slaughterhouse abuse and stop overbreeding.

Turning 60 this year, the HSUS has millions of supporters, about 630 employees and a budget of $170 million.

It also has a long list of successes that has improved life for millions of animals.

Examples include federal laws the organization lobbied for like the 1958 Humane Slaughter Act, 1970 Animal Welfare Act, 1973 Endangered Species Act, 1992 Dolphin Conservation Act, 2001 Chimp Act, 2007 Animal Fighting Prohibition Act and 2010 Truth in Fur Labeling Act. Other milestones included founding the Humane Society International in 1991 and rescuing 10,000 pets after Hurricane Katrina.

The society is holding three parties to mark its six decades. The first in Beverly Hills on Saturday recognizes the agency’s Hollywood and celebrity activists who support animal causes with picket line and pocketbook. Galas also will be held in New York City and the society’s hometown of Washington, D.C. Proceeds from the $350-a-plate gourmet vegan dinner at the Beverly Hilton go to the group’s companion animal and farm animal protection campaigns.

Actor James Cromwell will receive a lifetime achievement award. “He’s been a friend to the HSUS and to animals for decades.

He is somebody who has used his fame and platform for farm animal protection, animals used and abused in labs, horses who are used for horse racing, you name it, if an animal is in trouble, he is there,” said Michelle Cho of the HSUS. Cromwell changed his thinking about animals on a 1975 coast-to-coast motorcycle trip. “I went through feed lots in Texas for what seemed like an entire day, with animals on either side of the road as far as you could see, waiting to be slaughtered. The stench, the sound and the horror of it. I said, ‘I can’t do this anymore.’ I began the journey of becoming a vegetarian, learning that I can live without cheese, I can live without corned beef hash. This was a personal odyssey,” Cromwell said.

Husband’s depression won’t be cured by acting out online Dear Abby: I have been married for seven years and have two children. My husband has what I can only describe as an Internet addiction. He’s literally online from the time I go to bed until I wake up to take our kids to school. I checked and discovered many profiles he has made up on different dating sites.

When I confronted him, he told me he has no interest in having an affair. He said he has been depressed for some time, and it’s his way of escaping reality.

I recommended he talk to a therapist, but he keeps trying to justify his behavior by telling me I have no reason to feel hurt because it’s all “make-believe.”

Our relationship has taken a serious dive since I found out. I no longer trust him alone on the computer. I am also no

First on your agenda should be to take care of yourself and your own emerging depression. If that means talking to a professional, then go for it.

You have every right to be angry about what your husband has been doing. It isn’t harmless, and it isn’t effective therapy for his depression.

Much as you might wish to, you can’t fix his problem – which is trying to escape from

reality. Only he can do that.

Let’s hope he’ll find the courage to face what he’s trying to escape from while your marriage is still salvageable.

Dear Abby: I am not suicidal, but I do think about death, in the sense of what happens when one dies. I believe in the heaven-and-hell theory.

Although I’m not sure I want to go to heaven, I AM sure I don’t want to go to hell.

My reason for not wanting to go to heaven is because of the relatives who have gone before me. I come from a very abusive family but, like so many, most of them have been able to do what I call the “last-minute redemption.”

With that in mind, I do not want to spend all of eternity with the same people I could not wait to have exit this Earth.

Meditation brings focus to living in moment Dear Dr. K: I’ve heard a lot about “mindfulness meditation.” Does it really help relieve stress and anxiety?

Dear Reader: Mindfulness meditation has become quite popular in recent years. The practice involves bringing your mind’s attention to the present without drifting into concerns about the past or future. Many people practice it hoping to stave off stress and stress-related health problems.

As with other practices that are labeled “alternative and complementary medicine,” there is increasing research into the effects of mindfulness meditation. As a Western scientist and physician, I believe treatments and practices need to be validated by the scientific method. At the same time, I think it is foolish for physicians to dismiss out of hand Eastern treatments and practices that people have found valuable for thousands of years.

Researchers recently reviewed 47 meditation trials that met their criteria for well-designed studies. Their findings suggest mindfulness meditation can help ease anxiety, depression and pain.

Other research has found mindfulness meditation may

Mindfulness is the practice of focusing attention on what is happening in the present.

One of the goals of mindfulness is to enhance your appreciation of simple, everyday experiences. By learning to focus on the here and now, you are less likely to get caught up in worries about the future or regrets over the past.

Mindfulness is often learned through meditation. That is a method of regulating your attention by focusing on your breathing, a phrase or an image.

To get started with mindfulness meditation, sit on a straight-backed chair or crosslegged on the floor. Focus on an aspect of your breathing. For example, the sensation of your

belly rising and falling as you inhale and exhale.

Once you’ve narrowed your concentration, begin to widen your focus. Become aware of sounds, sensations and ideas.

Embrace and consider each without judgment. If your mind starts to race, return your focus to your breathing.

Then expand your awareness again. Most of my patients (and friends) who engage in mindfulness meditation try to meditate for 20 minutes each day.

You also can take a less formal approach to mindfulness.

Choose any task or moment to stay in the present and truly participate in your life. Eating, walking or playing with a child or grandchild, for example, are all good opportunities.
