JJC board approves former president’s resignation, settlement

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Junior College Board of Trustees approved to accept the resignation and settlement agreement with former President Debra Daniels, who abruptly left the college more than a week ago.

Board Chairman Robert Wunderlich said Daniels’ contract – that was extended to 2018 last year – end- Debra ed when she resigned, but Daniels she will have a severance package for a year. He said he was not sure he could say how much it is.

Wunderlich has said in a statement that trustees received a resignation notice from Daniels on March 18. Judy Mitchell, administrative services vice president, has been serving as interim president since Daniels resigned.

According to Daniels’ March 21 resignation letter to Wunderlich provided by JJC, she wrote she resigned for “personal reasons.” She thanked faculty, staff, trustees and the college community in the letter.

Wunderlich has said a climate survey trustees had approved in December to be conducted by law firm Rathbun, Cservenyak & Kozol “had a little bit to do with” Daniels leaving. The survey interviewed about 25 JJC administrators regarding a range of topics, including personnel matters.

A Freedom of Information Act request for a copy of the climate survey results was denied by college officials, who cited two disclosure exemptions under state law regarding preliminary information and minutes of meetings closed to the public.

State Police further consolidates radio communication centers

JOLIET – The Illinois State Police is moving forward, beginning Friday, with its multi-staged radio communication consolidation plan by transferring Joliet’s District 5 dispatch duties elsewhere.

The state agency announced in a news release Tuesday that District 5 dispatch responsibilities will move to the Chicago Communications Center, located at 411 W. Madison St. in Chicago.

The goal is to reduce radio operating costs. The news release did not provide the agency’s estimated cost savings.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Jason Bradley, who works with the agency’s public information office, was not immediately available for comment Tuesday afternoon.

Trustees Michael O’Connell and Patricia Deiters were absent. Student Trustee Saleh Ruman was at the meeting but not present for the vote.

The trustees had no discussion before the vote. When they convened for the special meeting, they went into closed session for almost an hour.

Wunderlich has said trustees plan to formally approve Mitchell as interim president at the April 19 board meeting.

duties in DuQuoin, Carmi, Effingham and Ullin. The ultimate goal is to reduce centers from 20 to six – located in Chicago, Springfield, Pontiac, Collinsville, DuQuoin and Sterling, the news released stated.

The Collinsville, DuQuoin, Pontiac and Springfield consolidations are complete and “have proven to be capable of handling ISP radio traffic from neighboring districts,” according to the news release.

“The ISP is committed to providing public safety to the citizens of Illinois, and the phased consolidation plan illustrates the department’s commitment to fighting crime, and keeping communities safe,” the news release stated.

The District 5 headquarters will remain open to serve residents. ISP communications centers are separate from local 911 emergency centers and will not have an impact on the statewide 911 emergency consolidation, which is ongoing.

NAPERVILLE – Spring marks the start of digging season, when people head outdoors to start projects they had been waiting to tackle all winter.

Nicor Gas wants to remind that the digging season also increases their chances of damaging underground utility lines, including natural gas lines, if they do not take the necessary step of calling 8-1-1 at least 14 days before digging. When making the free call to 8-1-1, homeowners and contractors are connected to JULIE (Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators), which notifies the utility companies. Professional locators are then sent to the site to mark the approximate horizontal locations of underground lines.

Once lines have been accurately marked, digging can begin.

Vietnam vets gather for ceremony at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery

bokon@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – Much has changed since John McDade returned from the Vietnam War and “people were hollering at us” at the airport in San Francisco.

McDade was among at least 100 people who attended a memorial service Tuesday for Vietnam War veterans at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood. He wore a cap that indicated his time in the service.

“Now I wear my hat all the time, and even young people come up and say, ‘Thank you for serving,’ ” the Wilmington resident said. “Which is nice, because a lot of them weren’t even born yet when I served.”

McDade couldn’t hear what people were hollering at him at that airport in 1968. But he could tell it wasn’t friendly. It definitely wasn’t “Thank you for serving.”

Many of the Vietnam veterans who gathered for the ceremony had similar memories of hostile receptions when they came home in the fierce anti-war climate of the 1960s.

Sean Baumgartner, director of the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, in his remarks at the ceremony made note of those days.

“You weren’t treated right when you came home,” Baumgartner said.

“I hope in your hearts you can forgive us for that.”

Baumgartner himself is the son of a Vietnam War veteran. But he was too young then to understand what was happening.

“Now that I’m older, I can appreciate what he went through,” Baumgartner told the veterans at the service.

“Even today, he just says, ‘Son, I’m not going to talk about it.’ ”

National commemoration

The ceremony included a prayer from Dennis Mitzner, chaplain of the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery Memorial Squad. Taps was played as a wreath was laid at the main flagpole in the cemetery.

Baumgartner said the ceremony was part of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War proclaimed by President Barack Obama in 2012 and extending to 2025.

He noted there will be other forms of recognition, including at the Memorial Day service for a second consecutive year.

It’s a lot different for Vietnam veterans than it was in the 1960s, when they even felt unwelcome at Veterans of Foreign Wars posts.

Gus Baseleon, an Army veteran from Manhattan, said he had joined

one VFW before the commander made some remarks that he did not want Vietnam veterans.

“I said, ‘You’re going to look for us someday to pay for the brick and mortar and to pay the utility bills,’ ” Base-

leon said. “I walked out, and I never came back.”

Actually, he did come back a few years ago, joining the VFW again in honor of an uncle who was a World War II veteran. Baseleon also is active in veterans causes. He serves on a committee that is bringing an Abraham Lincoln statue to the cemetery in Elwood.

His words as he walked out of that VFW post nearly 50 years ago were prophetic.

Old Hoberg house burns down

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The old Hoberg house in the Pilcher Park area burned down Tuesday morning.

The house was once the property of the Hoberg family, whose name is given to the 80-acre woods that surrounded it and will eventually become part of Pilcher Park.

“It’s the family house – the red one,” said Katie Zaban, manager of the Pilcher Park Nature Center.

The house “was in really bad shape,” she said. “The roof was caving in. Windows were broken out.”

The house had become the target of vandals, she said. Other buildings on the site had burned down in recent years.

Zaban saw a “column of smoke in the woods” as she drove to work in the morning.

“I thought it was the Nature Center. Once I saw it wasn’t, I continued to drive there,” she said.

The fire was far enough away from the Nature Center that it did not interrupt activities. Pilcher Park consists of 640 acres.

The house was about 3,000 feet from the nearest road, and the driveway was blocked by a gate that had to be

unlocked before fire trucks could get through, Carey said.

“By the time we got through there, it was burned to the ground,” he said. “It did start the trees and the bush around the house on fire. But it didn’t get too far out of control.”

The fire could have posed more of a problem on a dry, windy day because of the heavy woods that surround the property, he said.

Carey said the cause of the fire was not determined. Since there was no financial loss, there will not be an investigation, he said. Because of the location, it would not be unusual for squatters or intruders to have been in the house, he said.

“It was an abandoned, old house in the back of the woods,” Carey said.

“There was no power or gas.”

Zaban said the house had been scheduled for demolition once the Joliet Park District received control of the property.

The district more than a year ago was awarded a $1.4 million state grant to acquire the 80-acre Hoberg woods, but the grant has been on hold because of the state’s budget problems. The Illinois Audubon Society has also contributed $540,000 for the district’s acquisition of the woods.

About 200 visitors came to the Nature Center on Tuesday, which is more than usual, Zaban said. Spring break and warm weather probably increased visits, and the fire didn’t hurt, she said.

“It probably brought out more people – curiosity,” she said.

City Council insists on inspector general at Rialto

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet City Council is slated to vote next week on an intergovernmental agreement with the Rialto Square Theatre that would open up the theater to an investigation by the city’s inspector general.

It was not clear at a special council meeting Monday whether the Rialto board will go along.

“The inspector general is not being allowed over at the Rialto,” Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said early in the meeting, during which council members and Rialto representatives hashed out a wide range of issues.

But a number of council members insisted that they want the inspector general to investigate the theater.

The council agreed Monday to send the Rialto the city’s next quarterly installment of funding, which amounts

to $140,000. Last week, the city agreed to cover performers’ fees in two upcoming shows, an amount expected to be about $200,000.

Councilwoman Jan Quillman said the city “already takes a lot of flak” for its annual $600,000 contribution to the Rialto. The quarterly installments come out of that annual amount.

“This money is taxpayers’ money and not everyone in the city loves the Rialto,” she told Rialto board attorney David Silverman.

Silverman fielded questions about resistance to an inspector general investigation, saying that the Rialto is not opposed to it but that the theater’s not quite ready to accept it either.

“I don’t think we need a lawyer to look at these things,” Silverman said.

“I think we need a financial expert to look at the Rialto and see how we get to where we are.”

But questions posed by council

members went beyond Rialto finances.

Councilman Terry Morris suggested the current Rialto board should be replaced, an idea encouraged by two residents who spoke at the meeting.

“It definitely needs to go in a new direction,” Morris said, adding his support to an investigation by Inspector General Chris Regis. “Before anything’s done, Mr. Regis needs to have full access.”

Full access was another question fielded by Silverman.

“We’ve never said the inspector general can’t come in,” Silverman said. “What we’ve asked to do is a financial review and understand what the inspector general wants to look at.”

The city, however, appears unlikely to want any limits on Regis.

“You’re not saying no, but you’re saying yes with conditions,” O’Dekirk

said to Silverman. “I think what the council is saying is no conditions.”

Councilman Larry Hug, a longtime critic of Rialto management, weighed in and suggested potential criminal findings amid the theater’s financial troubles.

Hug said Regis should be in charge of the financial review as well as his own investigation. He wants Theobald Associates, the Joliet accounting firm that the Rialto board hired to review its finances, to work under Regis.

“It means everything,” Hug said of what Regis might look at. “It means the carpeting. It means the chandeliers. ... He knows where to look where the bodies are buried. He knows where to look where things are out of whack.”

The council is expected to vote on an intergovernmental agreement with the Rialto at either its Monday or Tuesday meeting. The Rialto board meets Wednesday.

Body found in Wilmington motel room identified

bstanley@shawmedia.com WILMINGTON – The man whose decomposing body was found Monday in a Wilmington motel room has been identified.

Michael J. Bradley, 44, had been living at the Van Duyne Motel, 107 Bridge

St., for a short time, Wilmington Police Chief Phillip Arnold said Tuesday.

Bob Jandura, the manager of the motel, discovered Bradley’s body after employees noticed a strong odor coming from the room, according to police reports. Jandura said Bradley had rented the room at a monthly rate and had moved in about a month ago. Dai-

ly housekeeping is not done on rooms rented at a monthly rate.

“He kept to himself and was quiet.

We had no issues with him at all,” Jandura said.

Will County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil said an autopsy was performed and the manner of Bradley’s death will remain under investigation until toxi-

cology results come in.

“There are no indications of foul play,” O’Neil said.

Arnold noted Bradley’s room was in order and all of his belongings were accounted for. “[Bradley] was last reported seen leaving work on the morning of March 18,” Arnold said.

Guilty pleas accepted in 5 criminal cases in Will County court

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will County Judge Dave Carlson accepted guilty pleas Tuesday in five unrelated criminal cases.

• Eric M. Ervins, 24, of Joliet was sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated assault.

On Feb. 4, Joliet police conducted a traffic stop on Ervins, who had an outstanding warrant, in the 7100 block of Meeker Avenue in Joliet.

Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Adam Capelli said Ervins pulled into a driveway, but then put the car into gear when Joliet officer James Robertson got out of his vehicle. Ervins drove into the backyard, then reversed toward Robertson, who had to jump out

of the way to avoid being struck.

• Jamarion L. Clyde, 29, of Chicago was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to delivery of drugs. On Nov. 30, 2015, Clyde brought two bags containing 24 hits of heroin to an informant in Bolingbrook, Assistant State’s Attorney Erin Krone said.

Krone said police set up surveillance before Clyde arrived with $400 worth of heroin, which he threw to the ground when officers closed in.

• Tyree L. Mitchell, 32, of Robbins pleaded guilty to delivery of drugs and is expected to be sentenced to six years in prison. Krone said on June 11, 2015, Mitchell brought $100 worth of heroin to a Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad officer at Haunted Trails in Joliet.

Christensen noted Mitchell’s proposed sentence would run concurrently with the nine-year one he’s already serving for another drug delivery conviction in Will County, which also was the result of a plea deal. Carlson said he will review if the second case should’ve been resolved while the first one was pending before he sentences Mitchell next month.

• Stanley J. Kinnunen, 25, of Aurora pleaded guilty to having sex with a 14-year-old Lockport girl last year. Kinnunen, who has no significant criminal record, was sentenced to 30 months of probation, but will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Prosecutor Kelly Tebo said Kinnunen met with the girl in September 2015 and had sex with her in his car.

Tebo said the victim’s family supports the plea agreement.

“I’m pretty much sorry for what I did,” Kinnunen told Carlson.

• Robert M. Ryband, 23, of Tinley Park pleaded guilty to delivery of drugs and was sentenced to four years in prison. Before accepting the plea, Carlson reminded Ryband he may serve more time because he was on parole from a 2013 drug conviction at the time.

On Dec. 30, 2015, Ryband and Nicole Lowery were pulled over by Tinley Park police when Ryband “left the driver’s seat, approached the [squad] car and admitted there was a blender in the vehicle that was used to mix heroin,” according to police reports. Police allegedly found $600 worth of heroin in the vehicle. Lowery still is facing charges.

Website aims to connect volunteers with nonprofits

JOLIET – United Way of Will County is launching a new website aimed at serving as a matchmaking tool for volunteers and community nonprofits.

“This is an easy way to connect.

They can sit in front of a computer and find opportunities that fit their lifestyle, their personal causes and what they like to do,” said Sarah Oprzedek, development director for United Way of Will County. “It’s a one-stop shop for volunteers and organizations.”

Oprzedek said for Friday’s soft launch, the site – uwwill.galaxydigital.com – will include just a handful of nonprofits to research. But over time, volunteer opportunities for United Way’s 46 partner agencies and other nonprofits in the region will appear.

United Way leaders decided to launch the site to increase nonprofit visibility, community engagement and efficiency when connecting volunteers with groups. Before, United Way’s small staff coordinated connections via telephone and email.

“What we’ve seen is that people, they want to volunteer, they want to

help and make a difference. What we were told was it’s hard to find ways to give back to the community,” Oprzedek said.

Anyone can search the site for volunteer opportunities, she said. Once registered via email, people can refine searches based on interests and nonprofit needs. They can also sign up for email alerts when volunteer opportunities become available, she said.

“Volunteerism is on the rise because it’s no longer enough just to donate. They want to be able to have that experience. They want to see not just what their donation is doing for the community, but they want to be a part of it,” she said.

United Way partnered on the website with Galaxy Digital, a company that has developed mobile-friendly volunteer management software for nonprofits.

Oprzedek said United Way needs more nonprofits to register volunteer needs on the website. Groups can do so by contacting Oprzedek at sarah@ uwwill.org.

The website will be live in time for National Volunteer Week, which runs April 10 through April 16.

LOCAL BRIEFS Roads to close Saturday in Plainfield for Fast Cat 5K/10K

PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield North High School track and field team’s Fast Cat 5K/10K will be Saturday in and around North, resulting in road closures, according to a Plainfield Police Department news release.

Two races will occur in the morning.

The first is the Fast Cat Kids Run, which will begin at 8 a.m., be contained to North property and not affect adjacent roadways.

The second will be the 5K/10K run, which is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. and involve two laps of the race route, beginning at North.

Due to the run, the following roads will be closed starting at 8 a.m. until the bulk of the runners and walkers have cleared the area: • 248th Avenue from Winterberry Lane to Champion Drive • 119th Street from Millennium Parkway to Heritage Meadows Drive • Van Dyke Road from Whispering Trails Drive to 119th Street • Millennium Parkway from 248th Avenue to Champion Drive

• Champion Drive from Millennium Parkway to Champion Court.

JOLIET – The Joliet Park District is asking the local community to vote for its application for the Seeds of Change Grant Program, which is an opportunity to win either a $20,000 or $10,000 grant.

The Grant Program aims to enhance the environmental, economic and social well-being of gardens, farms and communities. The grants will be awarded to organizations that help support sustainable, community-based gardening and farming programs that focus on teaching people about the food they eat and how it’s grown.

Joliet Park District Organic Community Garden submitted an application that highlighted how it would use the grant to grow its gardening program, according to the news release. Through April 18, the community can vote and support local gardening and farming programs by visiting www.seedsofchangegrant. com and voting once per day.

About May 3, Seeds of Change will announce 24 grant recipients: 12 school garden recipients and 12 community garden recipients; two school gardens

MORRIS – The Grundy County Republican Party Central Committee announced Tuesday that Gov. Bruce Rauner will be the keynote speaker for its Lincoln Day Luncheon on April 16.

“I stayed one year,” Picciolo said.

“It didn’t feel right. I didn’t come back until the ’90s. ... There are a lot of Vietnam veterans that won’t come back.

We need them.”

‘We fought back’

Many Vietnam veterans believe the good will to veterans these days is in some ways an atonement for the way they were treated.

“That’s because we fought back,” said Dan Fisher, an Army veteran from Joliet, who remembers being called “baby killer” when he got off the plane at that San Francisco airport. “There was no fanfare. Other than your immediate family, nobody cared. But it’s gotten better because

we fought back. “ ... We wouldn’t take it. All we did was what they told us to do,” Fisher said. “If it wasn’t for us, all those kids coming home today wouldn’t get the fanfare and the welcome back.”

Dennis Spencer of Lemont remembers coming back from Vietnam to an Army base in New Jersey.

“They told me, ‘Don’t wear your uniform when you go out,’ ” Spencer said.

“It’s gotten way better,” he said. “I can’t complain. I never did get in any real trouble.”

Gregory Warren of Joliet is one Marine veteran who has good memories of coming back – if for no other reason than he had left Vietnam behind.

“Coming home was beautiful, but being over there was a little hectic. We did what we had to do,” Warren said.

He could “feel the tension,” when he got back from Vietnam, Warren said.

“People were staring,” he said. “I didn’t care. I was home. “ ... We always say, you don’t know what we went through unless you were there.”

The effort will take place April 2, which is National PB&J Day, according to a company news release.

Every year, Dallas-based Which Wich participates in Project PB&J, which is an initiative of the Which Wich Cares Foundation.

Stores that are part of the franchise match a customer’s donation of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with one of their own. The overall donation goal is 100,000 sandwiches.

The St. Baldrick’s head shaving event, run by Volunteer Event Organizer, and Naperville native, Suzanne Flynn, hopes to raise at least $10,000 – an amount last year’s efforts surpassed by more than $2,000, Flynn said in a news release announcing the event.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven organization dedicated to raising money for children’s cancer research. Every year over 50,000 participants brave the shave in solidarity with kids with cancer and raise money to Conquer Childhood Cancers.

The event will be from 1 to 4 p.m.

May 1 at Abstract American Bar and Grill, 20631 W. Renwick Road, Crest Hill. Barbers from the Romeoville and Wheaton Supercuts will be shaving participants’ heads.

Women not willing to part with their long or short locks may support the cause by buying colored hair extensions for $10, Flynn said. Salon Cecy & Color Studio in Bolingbrook will be helping with that effort, and all proceeds will go directly toward the event total.

PEORIA – Cover crops are growing in popularity in central Illinois as a way to preserve nutrients in soil and purity in water runoff.

These secondary crops, such as oats, canola and cereal rye, were once planted after the main harvest to provide feed for livestock. But the Peoria Journal Star reported that the cover crops are gaining fresh attention for their natural ability to improve soil structure and keep nutrients in place.

“We kind of got away from these smaller grains, these other crops that built up the soil,” Illinois Central College professor Pete Fandel said. Today they’re just being used to protect and restore the farming environment, he said, and they’re not being harvested.

A crop of cereal rye is the first vegetation to emerge in the spring in remnants of cornstalks on some of the land Fandel farms near his home in Germantown Hills. It prevents erosion and sends roots underground, aerating the soil and pulling up nutrients.

The plants, which were once killed off with herbicide when main crop planting happened, will also provide a natural fertilizer.

“I’m recycling my nutrients, not letting them leave,” Fandel said. “I’m not managing a crop, I’m managing my soil and letting the soil manage my corn and soybeans.”

The practice is being pushed as part of the Illinois Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategy, which seeks to keep fertilizer and other agricultural chemicals from running off into the streams and tributaries that feed the state’s main waterways. Regular testing to measure that runoff is part of the strategy, and the Peoria County Soil and Water Conservation District provides it for free.

Josh Joseph, the district’s resource conservationist, said few have brought samples to the district office for weekly water testing since the program started last spring.

“It’s one way to monitor success or failure at whether you’re keeping nitrogen on the farm,” Joseph said.

“It’s a tool to use, not something to be afraid of.”

He said voluntary practices such as cover cropping and regular testing to determine the success of nutrient conservation measures will keep farming decisions in the hands of farmers, rather than government regulators.

Lawyer to help McCullough make his case

ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Jack McCullough will be appointed a lawyer in his quest to prove his innocence, but will remain in incarcerated while he does, a judge ruled Tuesday.

McCullough, 76, will next go before DeKalb County Judge William Brady on April 15, at which point a timeline will be set for the conclusion of McCullough’s petition for post-conviction relief.

Brady cannot make any rulings, however, until McCullough, who is serving a life sentence at the Pontiac Correctional Center, has had a chance Jack McCullough to talk to a lawyer.

Members of both the McCullough and Ridulph families watched as McCullough made his first courtroom appearance since DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack announced he believes McCullough is innocent of the 1957 murder of Maria Ridulph.

McCullough will be appointed an attorney by the end of the week to help him through the rest of his post-conviction proceedings, Brady said. Mc-

Cullough has been steadfast in maintaining his innocence since his 2011 arrest, a claim he reiterated at Tuesday’s hearing.

Schmack last week responded to McCullough’s petition for post-conviction relief by outlining his belief McCullough was wrongfully convicted in 2012.

Maria was 7 years old when she was abducted while playing near the intersection of Archie Place and Center Cross Street in Sycamore. McCullough fell under intense suspicion only in 2008 after his half sister Jan Tessier came forward to tell investigators that her mother had implicated McCullough in the crime in a deathbed confession.

After months of poring over evidence related to Maria’s disappearance, including information barred from being introduced during trial, Schmack said Friday that newly obtained AT&T phone records placed McCullough in Rockford at the time Maria was reported to have gone missing.

Schmack also alleged his predecessor, Clay Campbell, bypassed his ethical obligations and knowingly allowed false testimony that placed Maria’s abduction earlier in the day. Prosecutorial misconduct on behalf of Campbell and his team is something McCullough’s

stepdaughter, Janey O’Connor, said she has suspected all along.

“They needed memories and emotions of children 55-plus years later, talking about when they had dinner to change that timeline,” O’Connor said.

“But to change that timeline of the abduction, you have to discount 20-plus people: neighbors, family.”

Police found Maria’s body April 26, 1958, in Jo Daviess County, nearly five months after she went missing.

Worried the man sentenced to life in prison for killing his 7-year-old sister could walk free, Charles Ridulph filed a request Monday for a special prosecutor to handle the remainder of McCullough’s post-conviction relief petition proceedings. However, Brady ruled it was too soon for Ridulph to file anything.

“There is a time and a place for everything,” Brady said in court. “This would be the place, but the time is not now.”

But appointing a special prosecutor would undermine the professionalism of the entire state’s attorney’s office, Schmack said.

“It’s appropriate to have a special prosecutor when the state’s attorney or the attorney general is personally interested in the outcome of a case in a fi-

nancial way, or because he or she is the defendant or victim, or some member of the family or the state’s attorneys office is a victim, defendant or witness,” Schmack said. “Those are the appropriate times when a special state’s attorney is appointed, not because other people who are connected with the case disagree with the determination of the state’s attorney.”

Charles Ridulph said he understood the judge’s decision, but has plans to hire a lawyer to represent his family, a victim’s right he said they only recently discovered.

“Your honor, what alarms me the most about Mr. Schmack’s failure to inform us of this absolute right to counsel, is the question of why he would not have done so,” Charles Ridulph said in a statement he intended to read in court, but was not permitted. “To have abandoned Maria is one issue, but the to bind our hand and to further silence us is disturbing to say the least!”

McCullough was one of more than 100 people who were briefly suspects after Maria’s disappearance. But the case went cold for decades until Jan Tessier told Illinois State Police about a deathbed confession from their mother in 1994 that named McCullough as the murderer.

Lee was born March 30, 1945, in Lawrence, KS, to the late William B. and Emma B. (Hamlin) Davis. He attended Joliet High School and graduated from Coal City High School in 1965. He served in the U.S. Army, and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He later attended Illinois State University. On March 25, 1972, he married Nancy Binder in Moline. Lee was employed by ExxonMobil Corporation, working in various roles over a 32-year career. Lee was a people person and throughout his life impacted many people’s lives, both personally and professionally, with his positive attitude and ability to connect with everyone he met.

Lee and Nancy lived in Minooka, and spent winters in Naples, FL. They attended First Christian Church of Morris. Lee had unmatched enthusiasm for life. He enjoyed photography, boating, discipleship, volunteer work, and anything that related to spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a devout Christian and fulfilled his most important role by teaching his sons to be godly men, husbands, fathers and sons.

Lee is survived by his loving wife, Nancy L. (Binder) Davis of Minooka; his sons, Bryce J. (Chris) Davis of Morris, Kyle L. (Christi) Davis of The Woodlands, TX; four grandchildren, Tyler, Ella, Katherine and Alexander Davis; two brothers, William (Jo) Davis and Eugene (Lois) Davis; two sisters, Marion Hester and Betty Ann (Lloyd) Spencer; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jim and Paul Davis; and three sisters, Helen Arnott, Jean Ferrari and Carol Lotzman.

Bobby was a lifelong waterfowl hunter, and supporter of Ducks Unlimited. He also enjoyed deer hunting, and turkey hunting, and was mentor to several young people who wanted to learn his hunting methods. He gave of his time gladly to help others improve their hunting skills. Though Bob loved hunting, he loved family more. Spending time with and helping family was always most important. Bobby will be missed by all of those whose lives he touched.

Mr. Fielding was a machinist for 35 years at Caterpillar of Joliet, member of Southwilly Sportsman Club in IL, Co City Area Club in IL, Sandridge Hunt Club and the Christian faith.

Born Nov. 8, 1916, in Guadalajara, Mexico, she was a Rockdale resident for over 66 years, and was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rockdale. Severina was known for her delicious and authentic Mexican cooking, and

High School and was honored to dance before President Eisenhower with her dance troupe.

Esther enjoyed music and played the violin, piano and organ. She was Queen of Bethel at the Mason Lodge, later worked at Illinois Bell for over 10 years and was owner/broker of E.T. Realty in Joliet.

In 1964, Esther married the love of her life, Julius Teitle, and balanced her time as a successful real estate broker while raising her three children, Mike, Susan and Bonnie. She never stopped giving to her family and friends.

In recent years, she enjoyed spending time with all of her grandchildren and helped care for her great-grandson Aaden. She never missed a day of his activities.

Denis Vardal, age 81, of Joliet, passed away peacefully, Sunday, March 27, 2016, at home with his family at his side.

Denis was born April 20, 1934, in Mykonos, Greece to Kosta and Kalliopi (Xidakis) Vardalahos, and was adopted later in life by Yanni Koukas, who was Kalliopi’s second husband. He came to the United States in 1953, by boat in search of his brother, George, who emigrated two years earlier.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. Following the war, he founded Vardal Engineering Supply, which he owned and operated since 1958.

He was a member of Rotary International and the Rotary bowling team.

Denis was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, and became like an adoptive father and grandfather to all he met. He was personable, loving and accepting, and left a lasting impression on everyone.

Denis was a brilliantly passionate man with so many interests. First and foremost was his newest granddaughter, Danira, who rarely left his lap. On sunny days, he could be found driving his Alfa Romeo. He loved beating challengers at cards, backgammon and Jeopardy. He was a quiet and patient man who appreciated traveling to new and exotic places but always returning to his homeland, Mykonos, for the people, dancing, food and fun.

Surviving are his three loving daughters, Denise (Mark) Baker of Joliet, Debra (Vasillios Korodimos) Vardal of Arachova, Greece, and Dina Vardal of Joliet; three beloved grandchildren, Danira Aiginiti, Alexandros Aiginiti and Danira Vardal; niece, Laura Vardal; and nephew, Paul (Marinela) Vardal.

Preceded in death by his wife, Danira (Corso) Vardal (Feb. 13, 2001); his parents; one brother, George (Sandra) Vardal; two sisters in childhood; and his niece, Sande Vardal.

Kirk meets with Supreme Court nominee

Kirk had an additional incentive to be hospitable to Garland: The longtime federal judge and former prosecutor is originally from Chicago.

Matt McGrath, deputy campaign manager for Kirk’s November opponent, Rep. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., said the Republican had done “the bare minimum” by meeting with Garland and said Kirk should pressure McConnell to relent.

Earlier Tuesday, Collins explained the basis for her desire to see the Senate begin considering Garland’s nomination by telling Maine’s WGAN radio, “The first thing I did is I read the Constitution.”

Collins said there was “no basis” for flatly refusing to consider any Obama pick, as McConnell did, and conceded, “Obviously the leader is not real happy with me.” Arguing that a newly elected Democratic president might choose a nominee more liberal than Garland, she said of McConnell, “I’m a bit perplexed by his position.”

McConnell spokesman Donald Stewart declined to comment on Kirk’s and Collins’ remarks. Underscoring the stakes in the nomination fight, Kirk’s meeting with Garland occurred the same day that on a 4-4 tie, the Supreme Court handed liberals a major victory.

That vote upheld a lower court ruling allowing a government employees union to collect dues from nonmembers, a fight they all but certainly would have lost were Scalia still a justice.

That ruling prompted Carrie Severino, chief counsel for the Judicial Crisis Network, to warn that confirmation of Garland would create “a new liberal majority that will dominate the court’s decisions for a generation.”

SPRINGFIELD – Legislation is pending in Springfield that would let Illinois municipalities share sensitive financial data with third-party vendors hired to track uncollected taxes.

PEKIN – Farmers are seeing more insects than normal for this time of year because of warmer weather.

The Pekin Daily Times reported that the early hatch of insects could be welcome news for agriculture because there will be less for insects to eat.

Tazewell County Farm Bureau Manager Doug Godke said the early hatch could mean insects die off without enough food. Certain types of beetles can eat foliage on soybeans and the silk on corn plants resulting in poor harvests.

Jupiter, Florida, police determined that probable cause existed to file a criminal complaint against the Republican front-runner’s most trusted political adviser, Corey Lewandowski, in connection with an altercation that took place after a campaign appearance earlier in the month. Police on Tuesday morning issued Lewandowski a notice to appear before a judge on May 4 for the misdemeanor charge, which carries up to a year in jail.

The unexpected development injects a court battle into an already contentious Republican primary season just a week before a high-stakes election in Wisconsin. It came on a day that all five presidential contenders campaigned in the state, overshadowing Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s endorsement of Ted Cruz and Bernie Sanders’ push to narrow Hillary Clinton’s delegate lead.

Speaking to reporters on his airplane in Wisconsin on Tuesday, Trump vowed to stand by his campaign manager and lashed out at the young female reporter who conveyed the

incident to police.

“How do you know those bruises weren’t there before?” the New York businessman charged.

“I’m not going to let a person’s life be destroyed,” Trump said of Lewandowski. “No jury, in my opinion, would convict a man and destroy a man’s life over what you witnessed.”

Police charged Lewandowski after reviewing a surveillance video of the incident, obtained from security at the Trump-owned property. Police determined the video shows Lewandowski grabbing Michelle Fields, who worked for Breitbart News at the time, as she tried to ask Trump a question after a March 8 appearance.

The Trump campaign said Lewandowski would plead not guilty and “is completely confident that he will be exonerated.”

Trump on Tuesday reversed a previous position that the incident never happened, suggesting instead that Lewandowski was trying to block Fields from “grabbing and asking questions.”

“She was grabbing me. Does that mean I’m supposed to file charges against her?” Trump told reporters. He said Fields exaggerated her original statement that Lewandowski “grabbed me tightly by the arm and yanked me down.”

The video appears to show him yanking her backward.

‘New beginnings’ in Cuba

SPRINGFIELD – Cuba should become the 51st state.

That revelation was shared with me last week by a man who knows Cuba and U.S. politics well – former Illinois Gov. George Ryan.

“I can’t imagine why the people there wouldn’t want to become a part of the United States. The people there are really suffering. It’s only 90 miles off our shore. It just makes sense. And from a strategic sense it makes sense for us – it would keep other countries from putting their missiles there or establishing military bases.”

Sixteen years ago, I traveled to Cuba with Ryan to write about his efforts to normalize relations and trade between the two nations.

And I called him this past week to get his thoughts on President Barack Obama’s historic visit to that communist country.

“I think the president did absolutely the right thing in going there. I’m glad we now have diplomatic relations with Cuba, but now we need to get rid of that trade embargo. It’s hurting a lot of innocent people.”

It’s worth noting that the idea of making a state out of Cuba is hardly a new one. At least three U.S. presidents during the 1800s tried to purchase Cuba from Spain. They each failed.

Even the Confederate States of America viewed Cuba as a potential future state – if they were ever able to secede from the U.S. Regardless, Cubans are a proud, patriotic people.

I have trouble seeing them ever giving up their sovereignty to become a state as Ryan proposes. But the many Cubans I spoke with during my two trips to that island nation long for freedom from their nation’s communist regime.

It’s worth noting that during his 2000 visit to Cuba, Ryan pioneered normalizing relations between the two nations.

“Bill Clinton was president at the time. Officially they didn’t approve of

our trip. But behind the scenes they were cheering us on,” Ryan said. “We talked to someone with the administration every day.”

Someone who wasn’t cheering Ryan on was Vicki J. Huddleston, the diplomat who headed the American Interests section in Cuba.

“If the U.S. had diplomatic relations with Cuba then, she would have been our ambassador,” he said. “She was the ultimate ugly American. She prohibited the national anthem from being played when we arrived. She didn’t want any U.S. flags to be displayed.

And she tried to get me to change the speech I gave at the University of Havana to one condemning [Fidel] Castro.”

Ryan refused to condemn Castro.

“I’m under no illusions about Castro. He’s a dictator. He’s killed people,” he said.

But he added he failed to see how publicly condemning him would make for better relations between the two nations.

During his trip Ryan delivered $2 million in medicine, cleared the way for the Chicago Tribune to open a bureau in Havana and succeeded in getting Castro to allow more Catholic priests to work in the nation.

Those were hard-fought victories for compassion, a free press and free exercise of religion.

But perhaps the ultimate diplomat on the 2000 trip to Cuba was Ryan’s late wife, Lura Lynn, who brought her Midwestern sensibilities.

She displayed warmth and charm with Fidel Castro by showing photos of her family.

“We have six children and now 14 grandchildren. Family is very important to me and I have shown those pictures not only to Fidel Castro, but to both President Bushes, President Reagan and President Clinton. They are a good-looking family and all good-looking kids,’’ she told me years ago.

Cuba is now ruled by Fidel Castro’s brother, Raul.

This month Obama met with him and called for a “new beginning” for the United States and Cuba.

It’s important to remember the beginning of that “new beginning” might have started here in Illinois with George and Lura Lynn Ryan.

The Dems espouse talk of resolving the situation. However, they only talk the talk, but won’t walk the walk. They deserve to be voted out. Let’s select those who really will work and compromise for the good of the state and its residents, rather than for ego and party.

Ego and party won’t do them any good when the state is bankrupt and our economy is totally destroyed.

cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Wins and losses aren’t all that important in early-season games. Rather it’s more about learning lessons that could prove beneficial down the road.

That’s why the softball teams from Providence Catholic and Lincoln-Way Central didn’t make too much of Tuesday’s matchup.

The Knights grabbed a 4-0 lead in the top of the third, but the Celtics responded by scoring six of the contest’s

final seven runs to rally for a 6-5 nonconference victory.

For Providence (2-0), the day’s lesson was not getting too down if a game doesn’t start well. And for Central (2-3), the message was that doing the little things usually spells the difference between winning and losing.

After the visitors took a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth, Providence tied it by scoring three times in its half of the inning and then wrapped up the win with a run in the seventh.

“We gave up some runs early and missed an opportunity to make a play

on defense, and boy did they take advantage of it,” Celtics coach Jay Biesterfeld said. “That got them three runs, but it was only the second inning and you can’t panic. We felt like we were going to put the ball in play and figured that we just needed to stay with our game plan. And once we got that first run, it seemed like every inning after that, we were putting some pressure on them “The thing that I think that I enjoy the most about this team is our versatility. We have a lot of kids who can play a lot of different positions, and

that really makes it easy for us to make substitutions and move kids around.

Everyone got in and we’re going to take advantage of everybody’s strengths.

When you’ve got kids who can three, four or five positions, it gives us a ton of flexibility and we’re going to continue to try to take advantage of that.”

Central took a 5-2 lead in the top of the sixth after Naidelyn Medina (2 for 3) drew a two-out walk, Alyssa Klahn reached on an infield single and Abigail Baez (2 for 4) doubled to left.

Joliet West’s Robb wins duel with Hajduk

dgoss@shawmediacom JOLIET – A softball game of twists and turns had to come down to Minooka senior left-hander Alyssa Hajduk facing Joliet West junior right-hander and No. 3 hitter Kiley Robb.

Hajduk got ahead of Robb in the count, but as West coach Heather Suca said, “It seems like Kiley gets most of her hits when she is down in the count.”

Robb met a pitch toward the outside part of the plate and drove it over the head of center fielder Lexi Cerven to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday as the Tigers escaped their nonconference foe, 2-1.

“Kiley has been making good adjustments at the plate,” Suca said. “We were facing a great pitcher, and we made better adjustments against her as the game went on.”

Even if a girl is not doing good, we’re all coming together and picking her up and that’s really good to see early in the season. I tell the team to stay confident and never keep your head down. If you make a bad play, make up for it in the box and if you do something bad there, make up for it in the field.”

After Kendal Judge concluded her 32/3 innings of relief work by retiring the side in the seventh and recording two of her six strikeouts, the Celtics made her a winner in their at-bat. Emily Pilon led off with a double and Allee Hernandez ran for her. After Shannon Smith moved the runner along with a sacrifice, Zych singled to center for the game-winner.

“I was just trying to hit it up the middle to score my teammate,” Zych said of the winning hit. “We tried to keep our heads up and not get down on ourselves after falling behind. We had

“I just wanted to keep it short to the ball and poke it out there,” she said of her walkoff hit. “I was looking for a pitch I could handle. Minooka is a great team and (Hajduk) is a great pitcher. This was definitely a confidence game for us. We come out of it knowing we can beat these big teams.”

Both sides had opportunities to score more, but Robb and Hajduk found ways to escape. Both finished with five-hitters.

Hajduk struck out 10, Robb finished with eight.

West (3-3) had a runner on second with one out and the bases loaded on three walks with two outs in the second inning, but third baseman Maria Ruettiger handled Kristen Ames’ hot shot and turned it into a forceout.

The Tigers put a runner on second with nobody out in the third but did nothing with it.

Hajduk got Minooka (0-3) going in the fourth when she reached on a two-base error leading off. Julie Czerniakowski drove in the first run on a

grounder to short on a play where she also reached on an error.

Robb led off the West sixth with a single, and after a sacrifice and error and a walk, the Tigers had the bases loaded with nobody out. DeShonte Smith hit a line drive to right-center field that Cerven snagged on a diving catch. It went for a game-tying sacrifice fly, but Cerven also doubled a runner off second to help maintain the 1-all tie.

“That catch was a game-changer,” Minooka coach Mark Brown said. “I thought sure the momentum would be on our side after that.

“In the top of the seventh, we put runners on second and third with nobody out but couldn’t push one across.

That was our chance to win this game, but right now we are in a team-wide offensive slump, and it winds up being a tough loss for Hajduk.”

Minooka pinch-hitter Sally Tyrell singled to open the top of the seventh and Cerven beat out a bunt for her second hit. Tyrell continued around to third on the throw to first and Cerven

hustled to an uncovered second base.

Pinch-hitter Chloe Schamber hit a hard ground ball to West third baseman Madi Mulder, who held the runners and threw to first for the out.

Courtney Kurtz also also grounded to Mulder, and she gunned down Tyrell attempting to score for the second out.

Robb then struck out Hajduk, who hits in the 3-hole, on a 3-2 change-up to end the threat.

“Their pitcher pitched a great game,” Brown said of Robb.

“Kiley has really been on the last couple of games,” Suca said. “She has stepped up on the mound and at the plate.”

Jeliza Pacheco was hit by a pitch to open the bottom of the seventh. Ames reached on a bunt single, Pacheco escaped a rundown on a Minooka error and Megan Borgra laid down a sacrifice to set up Robb’s game-winning hit.

“A big thing was we got down our bunts,” Suca said. “Megan (Borgra), Kristen (Ames) and Madi (Mulder) had clutch bunts, and they all figured in the scoring.”

Minooka seeking offense to back Hajduk

dgoss@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – The Minooka softball team is off to an 0-3 start after Tuesday’s 2-1 loss at Joliet West.

Don’t let that fool you, however.

The Indians have one of the area’s best in the circle in senior left-hander Alyssa Hajduk, and coach Mark Brown’s roster includes 11 seniors.

It is a matter of getting the offense going.

“In our first couple of games, offensively, we are in a team-wide slump,” said Brown, whose team also has lost to Providence and Lincoln-Way East.

“We’re not getting the big hit right now.”

Of course, the Indians are facing strong competition.

“From start to finish, there are no easy ones on our schedule,” he said.

That’s the way we want it. Hopefully, this will pay off in the long run.

“We’re kind of under the radar right now. We’re not attracting too much attention. But once our bats heat up, we’re going to be a tough team.”

“We won it in 2014 and Plainfield Central took it from us last year,” Brown said. “We’re trying to get it back from them.

“But there are other good teams in the league. Plainfield North is good, Plainfield South can beat you and Plainfield East is capable, too. Our conference is not a two-horse race.”

If togetherness makes a difference, the Indians should be ready for the challenges they face.

“A lot of us have played together since we were young,” Hajduk said.

“We might have gone off and played with different travel teams at times, but we’ve been together other years (in high school). We’re a close group.”

PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Central baseball team continued its winning ways Tuesday afternoon as senior right-hander Sultan Solebo threw a seven-inning no-hitter in a 6-0 nonconference victory over Morris.

Solebo struck out seven, including the final out. He hit one batter, walked one and threw only 75 pitches.

Central (5-1) was leading only 1-0 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, but exploded for five runs, an uprising keyed by Matt Bunetta’s two-run single. Bunetta finished with two hits, the other a double. Kyle Mac Farlane went 2 for 2.

Joliet Central 16, Rich Central 7: Luke DeBenedetti, Jorge Vega and Ryan King each went 3 for 5 to lead Joliet Central (1-3) to its first victory. DeBenedetti doubled and homered, Vega had two doubles and King tripled.

Sale helps White Sox beat Rangers at spring training

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Chris Sale pitched into the sixth inning, Todd Frazier homered and the White Sox beat the Texas Rangers, 6-2, at spring training on Tuesday.

Sox catcher Alex Avila got just his second hit of the spring, a two-run single in the fourth that ended A.J. Griffin’s day.

The former Oakland A’s pitcher, trying to win a spot in Texas’ rotation, was charged with five runs and seven hits in 32/3 innings.

Adam Eaton also homered for the Sox in the seventh against Shawn Tolleson.

Sale allowed one run on Hanser Alberto’s homer and six hits in 51/3 innings. His next outing is opening day against Sonny Gray and the Athletics on Monday night in Oakland.

You might recall that wild championship game of a year ago, where JCA scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie Providence at 12 to force extra innings, only to fall, 17-12, after the Celtics scored five times in the top of the eighth.

Because of finishing 1-2 in 2015, Providence and JCA had the opportunity to host the opening-round games.

At Providence, the Celtics will begin the tournament at noon against Lincoln-Way West, with Joliet Central taking on Plainfield Central at 3 p.m. At JCA, the matchups are the Hilltoppers against Minooka at 1 and Joliet West against Lockport at 4:30.

The same two sites will be used for the 9 a.m. Saturday consolation semifinals and 11:30 a.m. championship semifinals. Everything then shifts to Silver Cross Field for games that will

determine seventh, fifth, third and first place in that order. The championship game will be Saturday night, beginning around 7:30.

Minooka and Providence lead the way with four titles each, although the Celtics’ first was a shared deal with Joliet Township in 2007 as rain wiped out the title game when it was in extra innings.

Minooka won in 2009 and 2010, and since then the Indians have alternated championships with Providence. The Celtics were first in 2011, 2013 and 2015, and the Indians prevailed in 2012 and 2014.

JCA and Lockport own one title each and have dominated the runnerup slot.

The Hilltoppers claimed their crown in 2006, when Providence was second, and the Porters won in 2008. JCA has finished second in 2008, 2011, 2014 and 2015. Lockport was second in 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013.

Lincoln-Way West, which replaced Plainfield South this season, has not yet had the opportunity to join the championship or runner-up list. However, the Warriors, under coach Jake Zajc, are a strong addition to the field. The other seven are perennial entries.

The list of players from 2015 who have moved on to college ball include

eight from Lockport, seven from JCA, six from Joliet West, five from Lincoln-Way West, four from Providence and three from Minooka and Plainfield Central.

Of course, when this same list is constructed a year from now, it will be Providence heavy. The Celtics return seven position players who started last season when they won their second straight Class 4A state championship.

No attempt here to name everyone, but as a sampling, here are some 2015 graduates who have moved on to NCAA Division I and Division II levels of college baseball: Lockport – Cole Bellair (Illinois); JCA – Nick Dalesandro (Purdue), Mitch Boe (Iowa), Danny Ehrsam (SIU-Edwardsville); Joliet West – Cody Grosse (Chicago State), Griffin McGuire (Chicago State), Robert Talarico (Lewis); Minooka – Cristian Sanchez (Georgetown), Tyler Paulsen (Illinois State).

There is no guarantees on the weather, not in spring in the Midwest. But if we get any kind of a break, you will not want to miss this opportunity to come out and watch what our local high school baseball is all about.

It happens every spring, shortly before the Major League season gets under way. The Joliet area is treated to the WJOL/Don Ladas Memorial Baseball Tournament, an eight-team event that serves as the unofficial kickoff to the local season.

Plainfield Central assistant coach Pat Hanley, who has been involved in the tournament since the early years, took a lead positions in formulating a list of winners and second-place finishers, along with a list of 36 players from the various participating schools who are now in their freshman year of college ball.

The introductory statement to what Haley provided us goes as follows: “Those of us who have the honor of working with and playing in this tournament continue to believe it is one of the finest in the state. Every year the teams involved go on to experience great success. Many individuals on the teams are able to continue this legacy of success at the next level.”

Nikola Mirotic scored 28 points as the Bulls (37-37) got back to .500 and pulled within two games of Indiana for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Mirotic made seven 3-pointers, his final one tying it at 96 with 2:19 remaining.

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Jared Spurgeon, Erik Haula and Nino Niederreiter scored in the third period to lift surging Minnesota to a 4-1 victory over the Blackhawks on Tuesday, stretching the Wild’s season-long winning streak to six straight games.

Marian Hossa had the goal for the Hawks, the 499th of his career. The Hawks played without their two top defensemen, because of an illness for Brent Seabrook and then a first-period match penalty on Duncan Keith for swinging his stick at Charlie Coyle.

So if you usually pack your slow cooker away from spring until fall, hold off. We’ve gathered seven of our favorite slow cooker hacks to help you get the hang of making the most of yours through the warmer months.

Cobbler

Combine 2 pounds frozen peaches or mangoes with 1/3 cup packed brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ground dry ginger, 1 tablespoon cornstarch and a pinch of salt. Top with canned or homemade biscuit dough.

Cook for 2 to 3 hours on high or 4 to 6 hours on low.

Sleep labs can reveal sleep apnea Dear Dr. K: My doctor thinks I may have sleep apnea, and he wants me to go to a sleep lab to be tested. What will happen during the testing?

Dear Reader: Sleep apnea is a serious health condition in which breathing stops or becomes shallower. In the most common form, obstructive sleep apnea, the tongue or throat tissues temporarily and repeatedly block the flow of air in and out of your lungs. This can happen hundreds of times each night. Laboratory sleep tests are the most reliable way to diagnose this problem.

When you spend the night in a sleep laboratory, you’ll wear your own nightclothes, and you can use a pillow from home. You can take your regular medications, but the clinicians will need to know what they are.

The lab usually provides a regular bed in a private room with a bathroom attached.

The room is kept as quiet as possible.

A technician first will set up the sleep-monitoring equipment. Then you’ll be left alone to relax until bedtime.

Throughout the night, laboratory staff will monitor you from a nearby control room.

Procedures used to diagnose sleep apnea usually include a test called polysomnography, as well as audio and video recording.

Polysomnography: In this procedure, small electrodes and other sensors are pasted on specific parts of your body to take a variety of readings during the night.

Some things they may track include your brain waves, muscle tension, eye movements, airflow, heart rate and rhythm, breathing, and the amount of oxygen in your blood.

The readings are collected on a printout called a polysomnogram. This is analyzed by a technician and physician. If a breathing problem is detected early on during testing, you may be awakened and given treatment during the second half of the

DEAR ABBY My oldest son came to me nine Jeanne months ago askPhillips ing my opinion.

He wanted to donate sperm to a black lesbian couple (for a fee) so they could have a biracial child. He told me he needed the money. I told him I didn’t approve because they are lesbians. (Sorry, I’ll be bashed for that statement, but I have to be honest.)

I have a biracial 10-year-old son, so race isn’t the issue. Had it been a heterosexual couple of any race, I would have been OK. However, what I told him was that if he gives up his rights to the child, I, too, won’t have grandparents’ rights. I broke down in tears when he told me all this.

Yesterday I received a picture of a newborn.

It turns out my son donated his sperm knowing how I feel about homosexuality. I have tried hard to always be there for my children, letting them know I love them and doing the best a single mother could do for them. I feel I must have failed horribly in bringing him up to be a better man.

I cannot, in our home state, fight for grandparents’ rights since he has relinquished his rights. I am even more hurt he would share a picture of my grandson knowing my opinion, and I feel horribly disrespected. Am I being overly sensitive? Should I just let all of this go?

That is a tad melodramatic. One can often calculate the chance that a contract will make, but it does sometimes need an “approximately” attached. For example, a six-spade contract that seems to rely totally on the trump finesse is not exactly 50 percent, because an opponent might be able to get a trick-one ruff. But the chance of that will be very low.

In today’s deal, what is the chance that six spades will make? How should declarer plan the play after West leads the club queen?

In the auction, after North raises spades, South shouldn’t use Blackwood, because when North shows one ace, South will not know if it is the valuable diamond ace or the less useful heart ace. Instead, South should continue with four clubs, a control-bid showing a first-round control (ace or void) in that suit.

Here, North control-bids four hearts, denying the diamond ace and showing the heart ace. South ends the auction with a plunge into six spades.

South has three possible losers: two diamonds and one club. The club six will disappear on dummy’s heart ace, but to hold the diamond losers to one, declarer must find East with the diamond ace -- a 50-50 chance.

After winning with his club ace, South plays a trump to dummy, pitches his low club on the heart ace, then leads a diamond to his king. When it wins, declarer returns to dummy with a trump, and plays another diamond through East to get home.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 5 has proposed to approve the pretreatment program. The proposed determination is tentative.

Interested persons are invited to submit written comments on the proposed new program. Copies of the relevant POTW documents are available for inspection and copying at EPA Region 5, and at the Office of the City Clerk, City of Lockport, Central Square Building, 222 East 9th Street, Lockport, Illinois, 60441.
