Tennyson Drug Store – Manhattan Corner drugstores historically have been a fixture of both urban and rural communities and before the large chain drugstores of today, they provided for the community’s health with their soda fountains serving as an important community meeting place.

For those of a certain age, the corner drugstore brings to mind a kind of nostalgic memory of days gone by. This was a time when everyone in small town America had a strong allegiance to their neighborhood drugstore, which usually was located on a prominent, busy corner, and was owned and operated by a local pharmacist who cared about customers and the community.

The pharmacist and his family often lived upstairs or nearby. And it wasn’t unheard of for him to open the store in the middle of the night to fill an emergency prescription. His store also was a place where you could get almost anything – from friendly conversation to items like magazines, greeting cards, postcards, cosmetics, hardware materials and dry goods. The good pharmacist knew everyone by name – in fact, he knew most of the local gossip.

The heart of the corner drug store was the soda fountain with a counter where you could sit and have a “cherry coke,” ice cream sundae, milkshake or even a sandwich. It was a special treat to sit at the counter and have the “soda jerk” prepare a soda or ice cream sundae especially

He and his students are looking for for you. The fountain-area of a drug store was indispensable in the heat of the summer.

The town of Manhattan’s first drug store was opened in 1890 by local businessman August A. Tennyson. Tennyson Drug Store was a gathering place for many locals, and for this reason, the first telephone and post office in town were installed in his store.

The telephone line connected Chicago to Joliet, Manhattan, Braidwood and Dwight. The

telephone line was supplied by the Chicago Telephone Company and marked the beginning of the telephone company in Manhattan.

In 1930, Tennyson retired and sold his business to George Sieffert, who continued to operate the store for a number of years. The building and store would continue to change hands over the next several decades and would continue to operate as a drug store until the late 1970s.

The then image shows a view of Tennyson’s Drug Store about 1912. The Manhattan State Bank building can be seen just to the right, before the second floor addition had been added. The now image show a similar view of the west side of State Street looking south. The old Tennyson building can be seen on the right, along with buildings that housed a saloon and Ed Hutchinson’s Blacksmith Shop in the past.

Spectators brave winds for annual Joliet Easter Parade

By CHRISTINE JOHNSON Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – Spectators held tightly to their Easter bonnets as strong winds whipped down Chicago Street in downtown Joliet on Sunday during the 24th annual Wish Upon A Star Foundation Easter Parade.

The rain and winds earlier in the day had parade organizers watching the weather until the last minute. At 1:30 p.m., the decision was made to go forward with the event.

“We have 80 units participating this year,” said Don West, executive director of the Wish Upon a Star Foundation.

Because of the bad weather, some of the parade units decided not to march this year and attendance was down.

The Joliet Fire Department kicked off the parade, followed by the Joliet Junior High Schools combined band. The Medinah Shriners rode their signature mini-bikes to the applause of the crowd, while the Easter Bunny and Spikes, the Joliet Slammers mascot, greeted children along the parade route.

Kids rushed to pick up candy handed out by those in the parade and competed with each other to fill their bags with the most treats.

There were quite a few dogs marching in the parade, including those up for adoption through the Dog House Humane Group. Karen Bartolomei, who leads the group’s Joliet chapter, also is the owner of Karen’s Pet Grooming and Boarding in Joliet and has participated in the parade for the past 15 years.

“We brought a few of the dogs we have available for adoption. We want to find them good homes,” Bartolomei said.

up April 7, many incumbents and candidates were among those walking the parade route. Mayor Tom Giarrante was surrounded by constituents while greeting and waving to Joliet residents.

Mayoral candidate and City Councilman Bob O’Dekirk made his way down Chicago Street with his supporters, addressing parade goers.

While it is not an election year for state Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, he was among those marching in the parade.

McGuire is a yearly supporter of the event, election or not.

“This is a great cause, with great people,” McGuire said.

Two seek Joliet council seat in District One

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Voters in Joliet City Council District One will choose between Councilman Larry Hug and challenger Terry Cottrell in the April 7 election.

The district includes the Louis Joliet Mall and the Wedgewood Golf Course.

It runs west to the Kendall County border while going as far east as Gaylord Road.

It includes a variety of voters – not all with postal addresses that match the city where they live.

“I have Joliet, Plainfield and Lockport addresses in District One,” Cottrell said.

The district includes some of the newest sections of Joliet. But even those subdivisions are aging.

“We’re now going through the first generation of streets and sidewalks,” Hug said.

“Some of the streets are 20 years old.”

Caton Farm Road splits District One. Its southern end is roughly Theodore Street, al-

though it’s not an even boundary. It goes as far north as Renwick Road.

Cottrell is the chief information officer at the University of St. Francis in Joliet.

He previously served a term as trustee and treasurer with the Plainfield Public Library Board.

Cottrell grew up on the East Side of Joliet and said he has a broad view of the city’s diverse culture while knowing the unique needs of District One. Those needs, he said, include more commercial development along Caton Farm and Drauden roads, more police in the neighborhoods, improved sanitary sewers, and closer connections between residents and City Hall.

Joliet peace walk participants want their neighborhoods back

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – As people gathered Sunday in the parking lot of Sacred Heart Church for a peace rally walk, Joliet Township High School board member R. Dale Evans Sr. passed out window signs designed to warn possible perpetrators that residents will call the police if they are needed.

Evans encouraged people to hang the signs in their homes, to spread the word that those who commit violence are not their friends and will be reported.

“You have to stop the silence to stop the violence,” Evans said. “If it’s my kid [committing violence] I want you to tell. If it’s yours, I will tell.”

Evans was just one of many who came out Sunday despite the whipping wind and rain. They came from multiple churches and neighborhoods throughout Joliet, some carrying signs calling for an end to violence,

shootings and hatred. A few carried photographs of loved ones who were victims of violence.

One of the event organizers, Pastor Glenda McCullum of Kingdom Builders International Worship & Training Center, told the crowd there have been 12 murders in Joliet since November. She read the names of victims aloud, and asked others to say the names of

loved ones who had died.

McCullum gave a powerful and moving sermon before stepping off to walk the streets of Joliet in a show of solidarity and support for neighborhoods plagued by violence.

“I grew up just a few blocks from here,” McCullum said before the event

Three face off for Crest Hill Ward 1

vshanker@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – Each candidate in the contested race for Crest Hill Ward 1 alderman has a unique vision for providing leadership to the city as economic development continues to be a point of discussion for residents.

Crest Hill Plan Commission members Gordon Butler and Joseph Casagrande are each trying to unseat longtime incumbent John Vershay in the April 7 elections.

Butler has leadership experience as a White Oak Library trustee and is politically involved with the Lockport Township Republicans organization.

Casagrande, a fire captain for the Lockport Township Fire District, said he knows how to work with people.

And residents have re-elected Vershay to his seat in Ward 1 over several decades.

Butler said many residents

have asked him what is going on at the City Council level.

“We need to have more effective communication with residents,” he said.

Butler has been active in politics in recent years. He is a precinct committeeman for the Lockport Township Republicans organization. And in 2013, he unsuccessfully ran for Lockport Township collector.

He has been the vice president of the White Oak Library Board for the past three years, and said the city needs to reach out to businesses along with residents.

“I believe we need a new face on the council, one that strives for connecting with Ward 1 and the city, and economic development,” Butler said.

Along with economic growth and better communication, Butler said as a trustee he would work more closely with code enforcement, making sure businesses and residents are following the city’s ordinances.

Albert’s four-year term on the Richland School District 88a School Board expires in May. But instead of running again, Albert is trying to return to the City Council.

“The city of Crest Hill has always been my real passion,” Albert said.

Albert sat on the board for one term, from 2003 to 2007.

He was a member of Crest Hill’s Plan Commission from 2009 to 2012.

“The economy took a turn when I left in 2007, but it’s sad to see Crest Hill lagging behind [other municipalities],” Albert said.

DeLaney said her experience at JJC taught her to work as a member of a board. And she helped make the college more transparent by pushing for video of board meetings.

DeLaney wants to bring that focus on transparency to the Crest Hill board, too.

“Crest Hill has not been very responsible,” DeLaney said, noting that city officials say they have a balanced budget despite a large hole in the police pension fund. “I’m attending the meetings and I see a lot of other minor things, almost like they’re looking for things to spend money on.”

Unlike his opponents, Inman said the city is on the right track for economic development.

“Shortly after the economic crash ... economic devel-

opment was tough,” Inman said. “But we kept working at it. We let people know where Crest Hill was.”

Inman, a retired veteran, school teacher and basketball coach who won a second term in 2011, said Crest Hill hadn’t experienced much economic growth until Crest Hill Mayor Ray Soliman changed the direction of the city.

“Things are starting to pick up again,” Inman said, mentioning the city’s property tax rebate program. “I would like to see it around and see the fruits of our labor. The workplace is fun and we’re getting a lot of things done while saving constituents money.”

Some of Inman’s other goals include continuing finding good deals for the city, such as participation in the Will County electric aggregation program.

‘Always looking on the brighter side of life’ Joliet woman turned tragedies into opportunities

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Perhaps Margaret Duncan’s ability to weather life’s storm had its roots in a picnic she attended with her family at Starved Rock State Park when Margaret was just 4 years old.

An uncle had encouraged Margaret and her 3-year-old sister to put their arms around his neck and off they went on an adventure.

“He climbed up the toe holes of Starved Rock,” said Margaret’s son Edward “Ted” Duncan Jr. of Glen Ellyn, “with those two little girls hanging off him.”

But when tragedy struck – such as the death of Margaret’s husband of eight years while he served in the Korean War or the severe injury of her late son Thomas in the Vietnam War that left him disabled and dependent on her – Margaret did more than simply hang on. She persevered and thrived.

First Margaret, a lifelong Joliet resident, returned to school. She graduated from Joliet Junior College in 1941, the College of St. Francis in 1956 and received her doctorate in 1975 from the College of Education at the University of Illinois.

A reading specialist, Margaret taught at Joliet Township High School, Joliet Catholic High School and Joliet Junior College. Ted said Margaret loved teaching.

“She always came home and talked about the kids,” Ted said. “She got her doctorate so she could help kids.”

Later, Margaret also became a deacon at First Presbyterian Church in Joliet. It was Margaret who teamed up with another church member to host a welcome party for Craig

Herr, the church’s senior pastor, when Herr first came to the church 26 years ago, Ted said.

“She was a cheerful person who was always looking on the brighter side of life,” Ted said.

“She loved learning and she had a strong faith.”

Ted credits Margaret’s parents for nurturing that lifelong love of learning and a spirit that loved others as she loved herself. Margaret’s father developed 32 patents for U.S. Steel, loved literature and knew Latin and Greek, Ted said.

Margaret’s mother was a kind woman, one who raised her siblings after her mother’s death, raised her own children and then helped raise Margaret’s three children – Ted, Thomas and Jane Duncan of Maine – after the death of Margaret’s husband, Captain Edward R. Duncan Sr. Herr believes Margaret carried that caring spirit into her own ministry. As a deacon, Margaret visited the sick and the seniors to keep their connection to First Presbyterian Church alive and strong, Herr said.

This was the same mother who, in 1959, packed her children into her little 1955 Plymouth and drove on two-lane roads all the way to Yellowstone National Park, Ted said.

Margaret’s influence in his life made him a better learner and a better person, he added.

“I was very blessed,” Ted said.

Margaret died on Jan 21.

She was 93.

Ted believes his mother’s knack for turning tragedy into opportunity best showed itself when Margaret handed him one-third of the money he needed to attend law school.

Lisbon Road over Interstate 80 in Morris will be closed to through traffic to allow for reconstruction of the bridge. The closure was supposed to begin April 6, but will now begin in mid-April because of recent weather.

“We’ve altered two of our 13 routes at Saratoga,” said Kathy Perry, Saratoga Community School District 60C superintendent. “It took a few days to adjust, but everything is running smooth now. Any students who missed the bus and were late for school weren’t penalized.

We sent an extra bus out to pick up those who missed their bus.”

Saratoga runs busing service for Morris Elementary School District 54 and Morris Community High School District 101 in addition to its own district. Three of four routes in the vicinity of the Lisbon Road bridge have been altered to Ashley Road, Perry said.

Parents of Morris High School students were contacted by a dispatcher if pick-up times were altered by four or five minutes. If it was just a minute, Perry said, bus drivers informed students of changes.

“I think the new bridge will be a huge improvement and give the area peace of mind, knowing there’s a sidewalk and wider lanes,” Perry said.

Clearance for I-80 drivers under the new Lisbon Road bridge will be 17 feet 3 inches, while the two lanes on the bridge will be 15 feet, increased from the current 11 feet. Spika said wider lanes allow for safer travel, especially on a bridge.

In addition, a sidewalk will be added to the east side of the bridge, which has been a concern for those who travel across the bridge frequently.

“I’ve always noticed people walking or biking across the bridge and felt sorry for them, because it is dangerous,” said Tom Pedersen, resident of nearby Fields of Saratoga subdivision. “I just wish the sidewalk went to the Gore Road intersection.”

Pedersen said he and his wife use the bridge a half-dozen times per week. He said through the construction they’ll take Gore Road to the Route 47 bridge to get to downtown Morris.

The new bridge will be great for the community when construction is finally completed, he said.

MORRIS – Closure of the Lisbon Road bridge for reconstruction has been pushed back roughly a week, to midApril, Illinois Department of Transportation construction field engineer Joe Spika said Friday.

The project still has a target completion date of Nov. 25, but recent snowfall delayed the original bridge closure date of April 6. Once completed, a wider, safer bridge will be in place, as well as the addition of sidewalks for pedestrians.

Spika said workers began this week prepping Interstate 80 for demolition of the bridge that goes over the highway by arranging crossover points on the interstate.

Weather is always a threat to any construction project, but Spika said he doesn’t foresee any complications.

“In terms of bridge construction, it’s a pretty straightforward project,” Spika said.

“The contract is set up so if there are weather delays, the schedule will be adjusted to get it done on time.”

IDOT is the regulating authority of the Lisbon Road bridge and is charged with paying for the entire project. The contract states the project was awarded to “D” Construction of Coal City at $3.09 million and the project has a final completion date of spring 2016 for weather-dependent items.

Spika said permanent striping of the bridge may have to wait because of November weather. Lane closures on I-80 will be done from 6 p.m. to 10 a.m. to minimize traffic delays.

But the contract states some daytime lane closures may be necessary. Spike said no detour signs will be posted in the area for local traffic.

Minooka police recipient of donations MINOOKA – The Minooka Police Department received two generous donations this past month.

Dave and John Bankowski, owners of Brothers Company Supply in Morris, are donating the cost of food for Minooka’s canine officer Ruger for the rest of his life.

Brothers Company Supply was recently named as Business of the Year by the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce. The business caters to any type of animal, from dogs and cats, to pigs, horses and alpacas.

When Minooka Community Policing Officer Denis Tatgenhorst saw the chamber announcement, he decided to contact the company and see if they would be willing to donate some food for Ruger.

To his surprise and the department’s delight, Brothers Company Supply agreed to feed Ruger for life.

The company is willing to donate food to any canine police unit, Dave Bankowski said.

“We talk to our manufacturers and we feed them for life,” he said.

Ruger’s owner and handler, Officer Matt Juras, said it’s a great thing the company does because Ruger, a 2-year-old Labrador, goes through about 40 pounds of dog food every three weeks.

Bankowski said the company is more than happy to do something for police departments.

“They do a great service for us, so we feel it’s good to do something back,” Bankowski said.

The department’s Citizen’s Police Alumni Association was the recipient of one of those gigantic checks from the Community Foundation of Grundy County.

In reality, the foundation’s donation will offset the cost of a new automatic external defibrillator (AED) to have in the village’s newly remodeled board room.

Foundation board member Lorraine Davidson and Program Director Devan Gagliardo presented the huge check to the Citizen’s Police Alumni Association and the village at the March 24 board meeting.

Morris Hospital recommended the association contact the Community Foundation to see if it could help, and the foundation came through.

The Alumni Association will in turn donate the money to the village to purchase the AED. “We greatly appreciate Grundy County Foundation for thinking of the Citizen’s Police Alumni Association for this,” Tatgenhorst said.

Organizers know it will take more than a walk to turn things around, said McCullum, so they are adding prayer to their efforts and walking hand in hand with God. “We are taking back our streets,” McCullum chanted as they headed out to walk.

Casagrande said he has been community oriented since starting his firefighting career in Manhattan. His main concern is developing a more detailed strategic plan.

“As part of the Plan Commission, we helped develop the strategic plan,” Casagrande said. “I would like to get short-term, medium-term and long-term plans going.”

Casagrande said the city is on a good path and he wants to help city leadership move their plans forward as an alderman.

“The current administra-

tion has put a strategic plan in place,” he said. “We didn’t have one before. We’ve got to keep going down that road, bringing in more business.”

Casagrande also wants to focus on projects specific to Ward 1, including cleaning up the Broadway Street corridor, making that portion of Route 53 more welcoming to visitors of Crest Hill.

Vershay has been a Ward 1 alderman since 1979, making him the longest sitting alderman on the City Council, according to the city’s website.

But he said changes still need to be made.

“We need to run the city

more like a business,” Vershay said. “The budget has to stay down. I’m not one for raising taxes on people.”

Vershay said further organization and management of city staff could achieve those results.

“That requires department heads that know the business and can do work with the money they have right now,” he said.

Vershay said the city has work to do growing a better business climate through big box stores instead of “mom and pops.” He also wants progress on a decades-old plan to connect Caton Farm Road across the Des Plaines River so people can drive to Crest Hill from Interstate 355.

OBITUARIES PAUL JURCA Paul Jurca, was born October 23, 1920, in Tura Luka, Slovakia. In Chicago, he worked at the Jurca family’s business, Turner Dairy. Paul served as Quartermaster aboard the destroyer, U.S.S. Robert H. Smith, during World War II. He married Ann Krc and moved to their farm in Lemont in 1950. Paul worked for Fasano Pie Company for thirty years.

Ann and Paul were blessed with four children, Ann (Jim) Dralle, Paul (Karen) Jurca, John (Marlene) Jurca and Steve (Beverly) Jurca; as well as twelve grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Agnes (Lew) Schwartz.

By MARK KENNEDY The Associated Press NEW YORK – Gene Saks, a prolific actor-director who teamed with playwright Neil Simon on hit Broadway and movie productions of such Simon comedies as “The Odd Couple” and “Brighton Beach Memoirs,” has died. He was 93.

Saks, who won three Tony Awards for his direction, died from pneumonia Saturday at his East Hampton home in New York, according to his son Dan-

iel.

The Simon-Saks collaboration had its beginnings in 1963 when Simon asked Saks – then a Broadway actor – to come to New Hope, Pennsylvania, and critique a tryout of “Barefoot in the Park.” Simon didn’t need much help. The play – under Mike Nichols’ direction – turned out to be one of Broadway’s biggest hits of the 1960s.

But three years later, when Simon was preparing the film version of “Barefoot in the Park,” he persuaded producer

Hal Wallis to hire Saks as director of his first movie.

Besides the famous trilogy of “Brighton Beach Memoirs,” “Biloxi Blues” and “Broadway Bound,” their work together on Broadway included “California Suite,” “Lost in Yonkers,” and the female version of “The Odd Couple.”

“I don’t believe every director can direct every play,” Simon once mused. “But Gene and I have had such a common point of view that my instincts tell me lately, ‘Go with Gene.’ ”

Abbey attended St. Mary’s Nativity grade school and was a Graduate of Joliet West High School Class of 2007, and a graduate of cosmetology at Professional Choice Hair Design Class of 2006. Abbey was a beautician by passion who loved the outdoors, and lived life to the fullest.

Her smile and colorful personality lit up the world. Abbey will be most remembered for her willingness to help anyone in need. Her ‘tell it like it is’ style brought laughter and joy to everyone she knew.

Bill pushes for possible municipal bankruptcies in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD – Stressed by pension debt, other financial issues and the possibility losing a chunk of their state aid, some Illinois cities want the option to file for bankruptcy. They’ve found an ally in a Republican lawmaker, who’s proposed legislation to allow municipalities to follow in the footsteps of Detroit and other cities in restructuring debt and paying back creditors. Opponents, however, said there are less drastic, intermediate steps than the “dangerous” path of bankruptcy.

One thing is clear, Rockford Mayor Larry Morrissey told senators earlier this month: “If history has proven anything in this state, delay, deferral and denial are not solutions.”

Twelve states authorize cities to file Chapter 9 bankruptcy filings, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures, and another 12 grant conditional ability to file. Twenty-six states either don’t have Chapter 9 authorization or prohibit it.

Rep. Ron Sandack is sponsoring legislation that would grant authority for communities to file for bankruptcy under Chapter 9 of the federal code. The Downers Grove Republican said it’s a “measure of last resort,” especially with Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposal in next year’s budget to cut in half the local governments’ share of state income taxes by 50 percent.

“It’s just giving time and space to do things right,” he said.

Separately, the Peoria Journal Star also reported that a bipartisan deal reached in the state Legislature last week will siphon $6 million in auto-theft task force grants to help cover a $1.6 billion hole in the state budget.

Local departments pulled task force personnel almost immediately after Gov. Bruce Rauner froze nonessential spending with an executive order in January. However, the task forces themselves still are continuing to operate.

Rauner spokeswoman Catherine Kelly said funding for the Motor Vehicle Theft Prevention Trust Fund was cut to help fill the budget hole but will resume in fiscal 2016.

The budget deal that Rauner signed Thursday combines across-the-board cuts with more than $1 billion in fund transfers to keep the state’s child care and other programs running.

Plane crash survivor, 7, to live with halfsister

NASHVILLE – An Illinois judge has granted legal guardianship of a 7-year-old girl who survived a Kentucky plane crash that killed four family members to her half-sister.

Sailor Gutzler survived when a plane crashed Jan. 2 killing her parents, Kim and Marty Gutzler, her 9-year-old sister Piper and their 14-year-old cousin Sierra Wilder.

A Washington County judge granted guardianship of Sailor to her half-sister Kasie Dlubala and her husband Daniel of Nashville, the Belleville News-Democrat reported.

Court Guardian Ad Litum Julie Kozuszek wrote in a report that Sailor was doing well in school and involved in extracurricular activities while living with the Dlubalas. The court appointed Kozuszek to represent Sailor during court proceedings.

Kozuszek wrote that Sailor expressed desire to live with the family. The ruling was made Jan. 30. The Dlubalas petitioned for legal guardianship.

The family members were returning home from a Florida vacation. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Sailor endured near-freezing temperatures, while dressed in shorts and T-shirt, during her trek through thick woods and briar patches after the crash. She eventually found the home of 71-yearold Larry Wilkins, who said the girl was crying and covered in blood when she told him her mother and father were dead.

LACON – Anyone interested in buying an old 80-foot steel and concrete bridge can get one in central Illinois’ Marshall County.

The catch is you have to be ready to lift it out of a creek bed.

The 1930s-era pony truss bridge that spanned Crow Creek in Wilbern washed out in flooding in 2013.

County engineer Patrick Sloan told the Peoria Journal Star that there’s been some interest by two private parties in moving and preserving the bridge, although he has no idea what they’d do with it.

The structure has been placed up for bid through April 8.

Peoria recycling program inundated with tires

PEORIA – A tire recycling program designed to clean up neighborhoods in Peoria was so popular volunteers had to turn people away after only two hours.

With help from the city and the Peoria Disposal Company, the volunteers are seeking to clean up illegal dumping spots and give residents a free way to unload unused tires.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS 2 found dead in rubble believed to be missing men NEW YORK – Two bodies were found Sunday amid rubble from the Manhattan apartment building collapse three days earlier, and authorities said everyone was accounted for since the apparent gas explosion that caused a massive fire and altogether leveled three buildings and damaged a fourth.

Authorities had been looking for signs of two missing men since Thursday’s explosion, in which 22 people were injured, including four critically. Officials suspect someone may have improperly tapped a gas line serving one of the buildings.

During their search, authorities said they believed the missing men had been inside a ground floor sushi restaurant at the time of the explosion: Moises Lucon, 26, who worked at the restaurant, and Nicholas Figueroa, 23, a bowling alley worker who had been there on a date.

Restrictive spring break pondered after shooting

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – A house party that dissolved into a hail of gunfire and left seven young people hurt has officials on the Florida Panhandle pondering what to do with a spring break season they say has gotten out of control.

The raucous parties in the spring break capital of Panama City Beach have had politicians, police and businesses tussling for years over how much to crack down on a key economic force.

That debate was revived again

when a packed gathering of dancing 20-somethings turned into a sprawling crime scene early Saturday.

“This is what we’ve been trying to warn people about,” said Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen.

“It was only a matter of time, and it’s only a matter of time until it happens again if we don’t address it.”

The city council held an emergency meeting Saturday to address spring break, allocating up to $200,000 in additional spending for increased police patrols. But motions introduced

by Councilman Keith Curry to ban alcohol on the beach and to roll back the last-call on alcohol sales two hours earlier to midnight were unsuccessful.

“We have blood on our hands,” Curry told his fellow council members.

Ind. governor: Law ‘not about discrimination’

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Gov. Mike Pence defended the new state law that’s garnered widespread criticism over concerns it could foster discrimination against gays and lesbians and said Sunday it wasn’t a mistake to have enacted it.

Pence appeared on ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” to discuss the measure he signed last week prohibiting state laws that “substantially burden” a person’s ability to follow his or her religious beliefs. The definition of “person” includes religious institutions, businesses and associations.

Police ramp up rail-crossing citations after recent crashes

By JIM FITZGERALD The Associated Press VALHALLA, N.Y. – A series of crashes involving trains and passenger vehicles – including deadly collisions in New York and California last month – have prompted police to ramp up ticket enforcement at railroad crossings.

The Federal Railroad Administration has called for police departments nationwide to add patrols and issue more citations as the first step in a safety campaign, and drivers in the New York suburbs are already seeing the results.

Police from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority are issuing six times as many summonses as they did last year to drivers who go around gates, stop on the tracks or drive distracted at grade crossings on the Metro-North and Long Island commuter railroads, spokesman Aaron Donovan said. Officers wrote out 249 tickets between Jan. 1 and March 22, compared with 41 in a similar period last year.

“Ninety-four percent of grade crossing accidents are linked to a driver’s behavior,”

said Sarah Feinberg, the Railroad Administration’s acting administrator.

On Feb. 3, a Metro-North train slammed into an SUV on the tracks in suburban Valhalla, killing the SUV driver and five train passengers.

Since then, a Metrolink commuter train struck a pickup truck in Oxnard, California, fatally injuring the engineer, and an Amtrak train slammed into a tractor-trailer in Halifax, North Carolina, injuring 55 people. On Saturday, a light rail train in Los Angeles struck a car that turned in front of it outside the University of Southern California, seriously injuring the driver and train operator and leaving 19 other passengers hurt.

At least two other train-car collisions resulted in injuries in the New York suburbs in the past month, but that’s not unusual. The Railroad Administration noted more than 10,000 crashes at railroad crossings in the past five years, causing 1,211 deaths and 4,644 injuries.

“This is where people are getting killed; this is where the danger is,” said U.S. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, of

New York. He has asked the Railroad Administration for a “deep dive” investigation to determine the nation’s most dangerous crossings and which safety devices are best at preventing collisions.

Maloney recently helped push legislation through the House that would make $300 million available to allow local governments to make safety improvements at rail crossings or eliminate them.

Crossing-safety bills have also been proposed in the U.S. Senate and the New York Senate.

The Railroad Administration announced its safety campaign March 3, telling police groups that the casualty numbers were “unacceptable.”

Feinberg said the Railroad Administration will conduct an audit to determine how many law enforcement agencies respond. But many jurisdictions are already running ticketing campaigns.

Pastor says community stands by co-pilot, family

By DOROTHEE THIESING The Associated Press MONTABAUR, Germany – The pastor of the Lutheran church in Andreas Lubitz’s hometown said Sunday the community stands by him and his family, despite the fact prosecutors blame the 27-yearold co-pilot for causing the plane crash that killed 150 people in southern France.

French prosecutors haven’t questioned the family yet “out of decency and respect for their pain,” Marseille prosecutor Brice Robin said.

Authorities are trying to understand what made Lubitz lock his fellow pilot out of the cockpit and ignore his pleas to open the door before slamming the plane into a mountain on what should have been a routine flight from Barcelona to Duesseldorf.

French officials refused to confirm or deny a partial transcript that German newspaper Bild am Sontag said it had obtained of the cockpit recording. The paper reported Sunday that the pilot left for the

“When I worked with her or talked to her, it was very good and very harmonious.

We had good conversations,” Dietrich said. “I know her and her family. This does not make sense. It is incomprehensible for me, for us, for everyone who knew her and the family.”

“From what I’ve heard, there were no obvious signs that there is anything in the background that could lead to this,” he added.

In Rome, Pope Francis on Sunday prayed for the victims of the plane crash, citing in particular the 16 German students returning from an exchange trip to Spain.

Francis offered the prayer after Palm Sunday Mass in St. Peter’s Square at the start of Holy Week.

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After graduating a talented senior class, which included longtime players such as Brian Lyman and Noah Slowik, it seemed Joliet West’s boys volleyball team might take some time to get back to a similar level of play.

And while one week or a single tournament is no guarantee, the 2015 Tigers appear as if they might have another good squad after putting up a fight against highly regarded Lincoln-Way West in the finals of their own 16-team tournament Saturday.

Coach Jason Herrmann knows his team still has plenty of work ahead, but he liked what he saw in the two-day competition, where his squad claimed second place.

“We have a lot of new faces this year, and there are a lot of big shoes to fill for sure,” Herrmann said. “We’ll look to our three captains – Juwann Jackson, Luke Van Eck and Kyler van Rossum-O’Connell – as our leaders since they have the most game experience.

“We’ve got a new middle in Matt Wyman, and Max Ahern is back after a couple years of playing baseball, so everything is pretty new in the front row. Guys are starting to get familiar playing next to each other, and that trust factor that you need to have

in tough, tight matches is building. And I think that showed in Game Two, when we played like we should.”

After the Warriors won the opener, the Tigers responded to the challenge by forcing a decisive third set in a rematch of last year’s tournament championship.

Juwann Jackson appears as if he’ll be a force on the outside.

Other seniors on this year’s squad are Max Ahern, Matt Wyman, Tyler Hirsch, Jon Medina and David Carpenter.

“I don’t think people understand that we’re not a team that will just roll over, since we have a lot of good guys this year,” Jackson said. “Last year, we came up short in the regional semifinals, and we don’t want that to happen again since we’re going to stick together.

“We have a lot of people who are playing in new positions, so there’s things they have to learn for us to get better. By the end of the season, some things we’re doing won’t happen. This might be the closest volleyball team that I’ve ever played on. We’re just one big family. What I love about our team is that no matter what, we’ll stick together and fight to the end.”

Middle hitter Van Eck and setter van Rossum-O’Connell lead the junior class, which includes Chris Beltran, who shifted to libero, and Scott Lyman, Brian’s brother.

“Last year, I think that we had a lot more skill, but this is a hard-working group,” Van Eck said. “I didn’t play back row at all for club or for school, so for the first year of this, it’s been going pretty well. A lot of people are doing different things, and it’s been working out so far. We’re all very close, and when we put a ball away and get a cheer going, it’s always good.”

Besides being tested on a regular basis in the rugged SouthWest Suburban Conference, West also will take part in tournaments at West Aurora, Minooka and Evanston.

While it might take a little while to get everything working together, the Tigers believe they can be a much better squad as the season continues.

“We have a lot of new guys playing and only two or three club players, so we’re a very inexperienced team,” van Rossum-O’Connell said. “But we’re all kind of clicking together, and I think we’ll have a really good season as long as we’re going the way that we are.

“We had seven seniors graduate, and six of them played all the time, for the most part. But I feel like everyone is stepping in and doing a real good job. We should be able to compete with almost anyone on our conference. I like our scrappiness and how we stay together.”

USF wraps up season: St. Francis concluded its 2014-15 season Saturday at the NAIA Invitational Championships.

After finishing 12th among 20 teams after 24 Baker games on Friday, the Saints went 0-2 in Saturday’s match-play competition. USF lost to St. Ambrose, 160-216, 203-202, 193-209, 194-194, 201190, then fell to Martin Methodist, 215-143, 234-185, 159-178, 204-181.

Joliet West Tournament: After beating Von Steuben, 21-25, 25-22, 15-13, in the opening match, Plainfield South lost Saturday to Joliet Catholic, 25-16, 25-19. Joliet Central beat Wheaton North, 25-21, 25-23, and Metea Valley, 25-16, 24-26, 25-17, and lost to York, 25-23, 25-17.

New-look Tigers hoping to continue their success

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – The University of St. Francis women’s bowling team, in only its second year as an intercollegiate program, finished third at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Invitational Championships on Friday through Sunday at Arlington Lanes.

USF was second after 24 Baker games Friday.

With 4,432 total pins, the Saints trailed Pikeville by 28 pins heading into Saturday’s match play.

The Saints opened the match-play round with a five-game loss to Aquinas. Dropping into the consolation bracket, St. Francis closed Saturday’s competition with consecutive wins over Lindenwood-Belleville, Grand View and Marian (Indiana).

After edging St. Ambrose in five games in Sunday’s first match, the Saints defeated Webber International in another five-game affair to advance to the consolation final. Facing Robert Morris, the Saints fell, 182-166, 224-183, 210-206, to end the tournament in third place.

At Friday’s championship banquet, senior Caitlin Hoffman (Lockport) was named an NAIA second-team All-American.

Five champs headline 2015 All-Area Team

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com Five state champions, 16 additional placewinners and 14 other state qualifiers highlight the 2015 Herald-News All-Area team. All 135 sectional qualifiers were considered, but we settled on these 35 individuals based on their showing at the state finals, victories and winning percentage for the season, finishes in other events and my personal observations.

I’m not picking one state champion over another, so all five – Coal City’s Corey Jurzak,

Cody Minnick and Joey Rivera, Lockport’s Shayne Oster, and Plainfield East’s Michael McGee – are wrestlers of the year.

Also, if someone received all-state honors, then they are an all-area athlete, and we’re not limiting picks to just one individual per weight class.

Seven individuals are on the team for the second year in a row – Coal City’s Corey Jurzak and Cody Minnick, Lincoln-Way Central’s Bryan Ditchman, Lincoln-Way West’s Kyle Ruettiger, Lockport’s Tyler Johnson and Shayne Oster and Plainfield East’s Zach Krause.

Here’s the 2015 Herald-News All-Area Team:

Abdullah Assaf, Lockport: The sophomore took third at 113 pounds in Class 3A. He went 45-8 (.849) and was a finalist in four tournaments and captured titles in the SouthWest Suburban Conference, regional and sectional.

Ryan Berman, Wilmington: Went 39-11 (.780) and placed sixth at 195 in 1A. The senior was a finalist in three of his five tournaments, winning Interstate Eight and sectional championships.

Egan Berta, Lemont: Posted a 41-11 record (.788) and reached the quarterfinals at 138 in 2A. The sophomore was a finalist in three events, winning Batavia and regional titles.

Jake Frost, Coal City: Claimed a fifth place showing at 220 in 1A. The senior finished with a 45-11 mark (.804) and advanced to three title matches, winning a regional championship.

Nick Hawkins, Wilmington: State runner-up at 160 in 1A, he had a 36-7 record (.837). The junior won the other three finals that he reached, the I-8, regional and sectional meets.

Austin Headrick, Wilmington: The senior placed fifth at 138 in 1A and finished with a 43-6 mark (.878). He was a finalist five times, winning ReedCuster, regional and sectional titles.

Kyle Hull, Wilmington: Closed out his senior season on a good note by claiming a sixth-place finish at 285 in 1A. He finished with a 37-14 record (.725).

Eric Johnson, Plainfield South: Claimed second place at 220 in 3A to cap a 46-4 season (.920). The junior advanced to four other finals, winning Plano, regional and sectional titles.

Tyler Johnson, Lockport: Returned from injury to finish fourth at 195 in 3A. The senior went 23-2 (.920) with his initial loss in the semifinals. Won SWSC, regional and sectional titles.

Corey Jurzak, Coal City: Three-time state finalist won his first title when he took top honors at 132 in 1A. The senior went 47-2 (.959) and won Plano, I-8, regional and sectional titles.

Riley Kauzlaric, Coal City: The junior capped a 45-6 season (.882) by taking third place at 182 in 1A. He reached five tournament finals, capturing I-8, regional and sectional titles.

Michigan St., Duke join Final Four The ASSOCIATED PRESS SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Travis Trice vowed a day earlier that he wasn’t going to cry should the Michigan State Spartans continue their improbable run to the Final Four.

The senior guard’s vow lasted no more than 10 seconds once the final horn sounded after Michigan State’s 76-70 overtime victory over Louisville in a thrilling NCAA Tournament East Regional final Sunday.

Amid the frenzied celebration, Trice squatted down at center court and began to sob uncontrollably.

“I was actually trying to hold it in,” Trice said. “I try to keep it even keeled. I’m mad that I even cried now.”

That’s when senior forward Branden Dawson interjected by saying that was the first time he’s ever seen Trice cry.

Counted out for done as recently as six weeks ago, the seventh-seeded Spartans (27-11) let it all out in a thrilling display of perseverance and defensive grit to oust the fourth-seeded Cardinals (27-9).

“I’d like to tell you that I thought five different times this year that we were good enough to get to a Final Four, but I’d be lying to you,” said

Trice led the Spartans with 17 points. Dawson had 11 rebounds, including a key putback of Bryn Forbes’ missed 3-point shot with 31.7 seconds left in overtime. And Denzel Valentine scored 15 points for a Michigan State team that won for the 12th time in 15 games.

It’s a run that included them knocking off second-seeded Virginia last weekend and third-seeded Oklahoma in the regional semifinal Friday.

Michigan State will face Duke – which beat Gonzaga, 66-52, in the South Regional final – Saturday in Indianapolis.

Coach Mike Krzyzewski is going to the Final Four for the 12th time, matching UCLA’s John Wooden for the most by a head coach.

Duke’s last Final Four and national title was in 2010, when the Blue Devils also were the No. 1 seed in the South Regional and had to go through Houston.

“This is a magical moment for us, but we played a magical team in Gonzaga,” Krzyzewski told the crowd.

No. 2 seed Gonzaga (353) had taken a 38-34 lead less than 4 minutes into the second half, putting the Blue Devils in their largest deficit of this tournament.

The young Blue Devils responded with nine straight points and never trailed again.

They had stretched it to 60-51 when Winslow made a 3-pointer from the left wing with 2:28 left.

“I want to thank Houston for giving Justise a huge birthday present,” Krzyzewski said of the forward who turned 19 on Thursday, the day before he had 21 points and 10 rebounds in a 63-57 win over Utah.

Gonzaga, in its 17th consecutive NCAA Tournament, was trying to get to the Final Four for the first time.

Hamlin races to 25th Cup win, 5th at Martinsville

By HANK KURZ Jr. The Associated Press MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Denny Hamlin just needed a visit to Martinsville Speedway to get his racing team back on track.

Now, with his spot in NASCAR’s Chase for the championship virtually assured, they can work to make it better.

Hamlin passed teammate Matt Kenseth for the lead with 28 laps to go Sunday and ended Toyota’s 32-race winless streak in the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Martinsville Speedway.

It was his fifth victory on NASCAR’s oldest, smallest circuit.

“We had a very fast car, but

obviously some pit road issues, but we overcame it,” Hamlin said after his 25th career victory, which was helped along by a serious blunder that took four-time champion Jeff Gordon out of contention late.

Hamlin’s pit crew, unlike Gordon, made their mistake early enough in the race to recover. Before the event was 200 laps old, Hamlin was penalized when his crew failed to control a tire on pit road. It dropped him from the lead to 22nd place.

He was back in the top 10 by the midpoint, and stalking the leaders shortly thereafter.

“The last 60, 70 laps played out how they needed to play out

for us to win today,” he said.

Hamlin also held off a fivelap, bumper-to-tail challenge from Brad Keselowski at the finish. There was some bumping and nudging, and a big wiggle for Hamlin in the final fourth turn, but Keselowski never caused him to spin.

“We just weren’t going to be denied today, and hats off to Brad,” he said, thanking Keselowski for not wrecking him.

“I did everything I could other than wreck him,” Keselowski said.

Keselowski was second, followed by Joey Logano, Kenseth and David Ragan, giving Joe Gibbs Racing three cars in the

top five. The jolt was especially appreciated in a week when the team announced that President J.D. Gibbs is being treated for a “symptoms impacting areas of brain function,” an issue that has left doctors with very few answers thus far.

It was J.D. Gibbs who discovered Hamlin on a North Carolina short track, and Joe Gibbs thought of that near the end.

“For me it was emotional and thinking about J.D. and all that he means to our team, so it was a big week for us, but a great finish to a story there,” Gibbs said.

Logano, the pole-sitter, was trying to become the first driv-

er to sweep a weekend at Martinsville, having won the truck race on Saturday. He led 109 laps, but said his car at the end was not as strong as the leaders.

Gordon, an eight-time Martinsville winner, took the lead for the first time with 58 laps to go and then got caught entering pit road too fast when the 16th and final caution came out with about 40 laps to go.

The mistake put him well back in the field, and while he rallied to finish ninth, was left disappointed.

“Wow. I’m sorry guys,” he said on the radio when told of the penalty. “That’s on me. I apologize.”

Most deals follow the “normal” path; the well-known adages are correct. But the game continues to fascinate because the “abnormal” is right occasionally, and it may be hard to foresee.

In this example, what is the best line of play for South in three no-trump after West leads the spade queen to South’s king?

You and your partner should discuss how to handle the auction after an overcall like West’s two spades. In traditional methods, North’s three spades is Cuebid Stayman, in principle promising four hearts and (probably) denying a spade stopper. Here, North planned to remove a four-heart rebid from his partner to five clubs. But when South continued with three no-trump, North was happy to pass.

It looks so obvious to cash the club ace – the honor from the shorter side first – and to play a second club to dummy’s queen. But when the bad split is revealed, suddenly the contract is unmakable.

There are two ways to gain nine tricks: one spade, two diamonds and six clubs, or one spade, five diamonds and three clubs. However, to get five diamond tricks, South must finesse dummy’s jack.

Declarer should first lead a club to dummy’s queen, then play a club back to his ace.

If the suit splits 3-2, declarer crosses to dummy’s diamond king and runs the clubs. Here, though, after South sees the 4-1 club break, he leads a diamond to dummy’s jack and makes his contract. ******

You can go low-tech, recording your behavior in a notebook. Or you can go high-tech: Many smartphone apps help you monitor your exercise and eating. Since, for many people, their phones are always with them, the apps make it easy. Also, some apps help you monitor your exercise, for example, by sensing the number of steps you take per day.

An important part of self-monitoring, of course, is to weigh yourself regularly (at least weekly) and record the number.

• FIND A SUPPORT NETWORK. Find at least one weight-loss buddy • your spouse, a friend or a relative • to help motivate you and hold you accountable.

• EAT BREAKFAST every morning. Get up 15 minutes earlier to make time for it. Eat slowly, putting down your utensil or sipping water, coffee or tea between bites.

• MODIFY YOUR SCREEN TIME. Keep track of your screen time (TV or computer) for a week, then try scaling back the time by a quarter or a third.

Devote the extra time to exercise, or shopping for and preparing healthy meals.

• SHOP SMARTER. Never shop when you’re hungry, and use a list to avoid impulse buys.

This advice may seem obvious. It is, but many people for whom it is obvious also ignore it. Don’t be one: These “habits” really can help you achieve your weightloss goal.

Do people who effectively lose weight and keep it off also have habits in common?

Dear Reader: That’s a very interesting question – and I think the answer is “yes.” There are certain “habits” that help, but only if you make a long-term commitment to them.

Lasting weight loss demands that you transform your eating and exercise habits. But many other choices you make each day can also make a difference. What follows are several habits that can help people achieve – and maintain – their target weight.

But first, a word of advice: Don’t do all of these at once. Choose just one and try to stick with it for a week or so.

Once you find yourself doing that first one consistently, then add a second. And start with the one that you are most confident you can be successful with.

• SET SMALL, SPECIFIC AND REALISTIC GOALS. Perhaps you’d like to drop 50 pounds. Start with a more realistic goal of losing 5 to 10 percent of your weight. Once you’ve achieved that, set the next goal.

Also, avoid generalized goals, such as, “I should eat less and exercise more.” Instead, set specific short-term goals: * I will bring a healthy lunch from home at least three times next week. * I will walk with a friend after work on Monday and Wednesday.

• SELF-MONITOR. Many people are not aware of how many calories they eat or how much they exercise. Writing down what you do can help you gain awareness of your behaviors and track your changes toward specific

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips and “Anne,” 50, who do not talk to each other. The last time we were all together was a family vacation in 2010. They live in different states, and I travel to visit them for the holidays. They have similar lifestyles – married, children, work outside the home – but they don’t reach out to each other.

When Mary Beth wrote her feelings to Anne, they were viewed as hurtful and vindictive. I received a copy of the letter, but I didn’t think they were. That was two years ago, and Anne never sent a reply. She said, “Oh, Mom, I don’t know what to write. Can you help?”

Frankly, I think Anne prefers the lack of contact with her sister, and that even though they are sisters there is no bond between them.

Dear Disappointed Mom: Nowhere in your letter did you mention how Mary Beth feels about the fact that her letter may have caused an estrangement. As an adult, Anne should have responded to that letter. It isn’t unusual in families that are geographically separated for sibling bonds to loosen. Work, marriage and children can be profoundly distracting.

I’m advising you to continue to see both daughters, but not involve yourself in their relationship. I’m not sure what kind of “noise” you’re looking for, but if you poke into this, it could be an explosion.
