D-86 reviews changes to discipline

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Public Schools District 86 Board of School Inspectors received a crash course at Wednesday’s meeting on new changes to student disciplinary policies.

The changes stipulated by Senate Bill 100 – or Public Act 99-456 – may have minimal impact on how District 86 officials discipline students.

District 86 is “kind of the antithesis” of why the legislation was needed, Nicholas Sakellariou, the district’s chief officer for legal services and labor relations, told the board Wednesday.

“We’re not the cause or the reason but here we are,” he said.

The legislation, signed into law by Gov. Bruce Rauner last August, sets limits on the number and duration of expulsions and suspensions school officials can use to discipline students.

Sakellariou said in his opinion the law arises from the federal government and Office For Civil Rights saying there are too many students disciplined in disproportionate numbers by race or ethnicity.

He also said some other Illinois school districts probably gave rise to these issues and lawmakers in those districts reacted with the creation of Senate Bill 100.

“We won’t know for probably two or three years as to whether or not this change in the disciplinary [policy] is a benefit or will result in schools being hard pressed and more problematic to control certain student misbehavior,” Sakellariou said.

Board inspector Deborah Ziech asked if district staff and principals will have professional development training on the law and how it will affect classroom management.

Sakellariou said the district’s next step would be to look at its policies, revise them and bring them to the board, as well as revise procedures.

IRS hack hits Crest Hill alderwoman

vshanker@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – Not even government officials are safe from recent Internal Revenue Service data breaches.

Crest Hill Ward 2 Alderwoman Barbara Sklare received a letter two weeks ago from the IRS asking whether she and husband, William, have filed their joint 2015 tax return.

They haven’t.

“Apparently, someone [had] gone into the IRS and gotten ahold of my prior tax return,” Sklare said. “With that, they got my Social Security number, everything about me.”

Sklare was told later by the IRS that the thief created fake W-2 forms, then tried to get a refund with the couple’s information.

“The only reason this was caught, the only reason they didn’t get a refund, was because on the fake W-2s, they put an income way above what we made.”

That raised a red flag with the IRS. The federal tax authority has been rocked by criticism in the wake of recent

ceptions, school boards may not institute zero-tolerance policies under the law.

“Suspensions, expulsions, out-of-school placements, all of those things are essentially to become the last resort,” Sakellariou said. “The duration of these things doesn’t really help the students and so [the law] calls upon school districts to take efforts to ensure that students are not excluded from school unnecessarily.”

State Sen. Kimberly Lightford, D-Maywood, the bill’s sponsor, has said the legislation is meant to encourage schools to find alternatives to addressing behavioral issues of students that do not disrupt their education.

She also said the bill is meant to address racial disparity among students who are disciplined in Illinois, she said.

Board inspector Jeffrey Pritz asked about the cause of the legislation, since the majority of school districts are “very forthright and fair” to students.

“The goal is to keep students in school,” he said.

According an IRS news release issued Friday, hackers used a program that allows taxpayers to check their tax history online, called “Get Transcript,” to access the sensitive information.

According to the release, the IRS discovered last May that about 334,000 taxpayer accounts were accessed. An additional 390,000 taxpayer accounts were compromised between January 2014 and May 2015.

The hacked program was taken down in May of last year.

protect PIN, offering free Equifax identity theft protection products for one year, and encouraging taxpayers to place a “fraud alert” on their credit accounts.

The IRS also will place extra scrutiny on tax returns with targeted Social Security numbers and place special markers on those accounts.

Aftermath

Sklare said life after the attempted fraud isn’t pretty.

“I had to take vacation time to work this out,” she said, noting that she needed to freeze her credit, issue credit alerts and change bank accounts.

Sklare said she needs to constantly monitor her Social Security and other financial accounts.

While Sklare’s tax information is safe for the meantime, she said she is stuck looking over her shoulder on any financial transaction or credit-related move she makes.

“I was probably one of the lucky ones,” Sklare said. “Other than that, I’m having to fight to even get a refund.”

I&M CANAL HQ RENOVATED Will County Historical Museum in Lockport open for business

LOCKPORT – The Will County Historical Society unearthed this past year some interesting discoveries as board members implemented major renovations at the Will County Historical Museum and Research Center in Lockport.

The museum at 803 S. State St. – built in 1837 – once housed the original headquarters for the Illinois and Michigan Canal commissioners.

“We found a fireman’s ax between the walls,” said Sandy Vasko, the group’s president. “It was a 20th-century fireman’s ax made in China. Somebody must have been up in the attic with an ax and dropped it between the walls and couldn’t retrieve it. And we discovered it.”

Some findings were more welcomed than others, or drove up costs, said Bill Molony, society board member.

When volunteers ripped out porch boards – which for years had been rotting – they made the unwanted discovery that only three piles of stones supported a small section of the building’s foundation.

“That wasn’t apparent before we started,” Molony said.

Since spring 2015, volunteers have been busy removing lead-based paint, installing new plumbing, electricity and light fixtures, securing the building’s foundation, and cleaning up in time for Thursday’s season opening.

Visitors who stop by will be able to see nearly a year’s worth of renovations.

The Lockport museum features rotating exhibits describing the history of Will County. The 10-room, two-anda-half-story building is filled with photos, various artifacts and documents concerning the operation and creation of the I&M Canal.

According to the museum’s website, a residence for the canal superintendent was added to the office building in 1876, and a bank vault was installed to store canal records.

Current exhibits include “The Weird of Will County,” and “Weapons and Warfare of Will County.” One exhibit, “Dr. Dougall’s Office,” allows visitors to see what a typical doctor’s office looked during the Edwardian era.

Because the building is a dedicated national landmark and is on the National Registry of Historic Places, Vasko said there were several renovation guidelines they had to abide by –

Jury sees Evergreen Terrace crime scene

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Police Officer Ryan Myers put on latex gloves and held up people’s exhibit No. 105 for the jury to see during his testimony Wednesday afternoon.

The filet knife that he took from the floor of a laundry room at Evergreen Terrace on Sept. 3, 2014, has a white Drumaine S. 4.5-inch handle and a McKinley 5-inch blade. Joslyn Woods reportedly brought the knife for her protection when she met Drumaine S. McKinley for a sexual encounter they’d arranged online. But

when Woods took out the blade during an argument over money, McKinley threw her against the wall and began stabbing her repeatedly, according to police reports.

On Wednesday, jurors watched a crime scene video that police evidence technician Eric Stanley made in the complex at 363 N. Broadway that show Woods’ body, the knife on the floor near her head and a large amount of blood on the floor, walls and ceiling.

McKinley, whose lawyers say he acted in self-defense when Woods brought out the knife, left the complex and walked to Union Station and then a relative’s house on Washington Street, discarding a bloodstained shirt and socks on the way, prosecutors said.

Man found guilty of attempted murder in 2009 knife attack

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A jury on Wednesday took about three hours to find a man guilty of attempted murder in a 2009 knife attack on his ex-girlfriend in their Joliet home.

Bradley M. Schlott, 48, faces between six to 30 years in prison when he is sentenced May 3 by Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak.

Schlott’s defense attorneys Chuck Bretz and Cosmo Tedone acknowledged during the Bradley M. trial he attacked Kim- Schlott berly Hurschik, but argued he did so because of the side effects of prescription medication.

Schlott and Hurschik had been living together in her westside Joliet home for seven years before the March 12, 2009, incident. Hurschik testified she wanted out of the relationship because Schlott’s “paranoia and ... control[ling] behavior” had increased since he lost his job in late 2008.

Hurschik had just finished showering for work about 5:30 a.m. when

Schlott came into the upstairs bathroom and started punching her in the face, according to trial testimony.

When she tried to run out, he grabbed her by the hair, threw her to the ground and choked her before slicing her throat and cutting the side of her breast with a hunting knife.

Schlott called 911 and reported the stabbing and need for an ambulance but hung up when the dispatcher asked for his name. Hurschik then told Schlott to get rid of the knife and called 911 herself.

“Bradley Schlott is a weak and jealous man who savagely attacked his former girlfriend because he could no longer control her,” Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said in a statement. “Their nine-year relationship was coming to an end and he had lost his job. In his cowardly rage, he hatched a plan to brutally murder her and then commit suicide.”

“By fighting back, this courageous victim not only saved her own life but helped police and prosecutors put this monster behind bars,” Glasgow said.

Assistant State’s Attorney Tricia McKenna and Marie Griffin prosecuted the case.

While other police officers prepared to knock on the front door, Lt. Jeremy Harrison went to the backyard and heard a loud crash in the woods behind him, he testified.

When Harrison asked who made the noise, McKinley answered “You know who it is. It’s me. Don’t shoot.

I’m coming towards you,” Harrison said.

Harrison said he needed to link two pairs of handcuffs to secure the 6-foot

3-inch, 275 pound McKinley.

“As he was being taken to a marked squad car he told his brother, ‘Keep your head up, P. I’m going to be gone a long time,’ ” Harrison testified. “He [also] said, ‘I didn’t mean to hurt her that bad. I was tricking off and they tried to rob me and they stuck me because I flashed a little money.’ ” Myers testified he photographed cuts to McKinley’s arms and hands after he was brought back to the police station.

Stanley attended Woods’ autopsy the next day and learned she had cuts to her neck, shoulders, face, arms and hands and “slashes to the back of her neck and head.”

The trial is scheduled to continue Thursday.

Plainfield Plan Commission recommends drive-thru use for Target lot development

vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield Plan Commission members on Tuesday recommended special-use approval of new plans for a previously approved two-building outlot in the Target development at 127th Street and Route 59.

But commissioners had concerns about traffic congestion created by the addition of the drive-thrus.

The applicant, Vequity, presented a plan to turn the 1.2 acres of parking lot space south of Chili’s into two new multi-tenant buildings with drivethrus. The site sits just south of Chili’s, between the main parking lot of Target and Route 59.

While no businesses have been confirmed for the location yet, Vequity representative Ryan Murphy said the north building’s north end cap will host a quick-service restaurant. And the two buildings mean changes in parking as well.

“The plan before you is based on tenant demand to add the drive-thru,” Murphy said. “It does add a few more parking spaces than before because it’s a more efficient plan.”

According to the plan, the two build-

ings would each be surrounded by parking. There would be one access point off the Target parking lot. Cars for the north building’s drive-thru would go straight to the east end of the property and head counterclockwise around the building.

Motorists also would head counterclockwise around the southern building for the drive-thru tenant.

According to village documents, village staff noted that the drive-thru uses are far enough from the residential area across Route 59 so noise and lights wouldn’t be a concern. Also, the staff claimed the nearby businesses wouldn’t be negatively impacted by the site plan.

While commissioners were fine with the overall scope of the plan, they raised concerns about the single access point to the site, and how the orientation of the drive-thrus would impact vehicle backup.

The commission agreed with Commissioner Dan Seggebruch’s suggestion that an emergency-only access road be installed at the southwestern end of the site. But commissioners went through with recommending approval of the special use for drive-thrus to be added to the two buildings.

Former Grundy County official pleads guilty to theft SHAW MEDIA MORRIS – A former employee of the Grundy County Health Department pleaded guilty Wednesday to theft for stealing $42,000 in county funds.

Renae Chronister, 47, of Morris spent the money on personal shopping trips, restaurant meals and visits to hair and nail salons, according to a news released issue by Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

Chronister was ordered to pay $42,000 in restitution and was sentenced to 24 months of probation and 480 hours of community service after pleading guilty before Judge Robert Marsaglia in Grundy County Criminal Court.

“The defendant was ordered to pay back the taxpayer money that she recklessly used to foot the bill for her lifestyle,” Madigan said in the news release.

While Chronister was working as bookkeeper, she stole the funds by pocketing cash paid by area residents and businesses for county services, including immunizations, mental health counseling and public health inspections, the news release said..

Investigators found a pattern of repeated cash deposits into Chronister’s bank accounts from 2009 to 2013.

As bookkeeper, Chronister kept track of money received within the health department and its three different divisions: environmental, mental health and nursing. The county detected in 2012 that cash was not being consistently deposited with the county treasurer’s office from the health department and ordered an audit, which revealed the missing funds.

The county terminated Chronister from her position in February 2013.

Bureau Chief David Navarro, Assistant Attorney General Jonas Harger and Associate Director Louis Dolce handled the case for Madigan’s Public Integrity Bureau with assistance from the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office.

On Feb. 10, during the annual meeting of the Will-South Cook Soil and Water Conservation District, election results were announced, according to a district news release.

Newly elected to the board is Jim Robbins, of Manhattan.

Bill Hnetkovsky, secretary, of Manhattan, and Cathy Ruchaj, treasurer, of Frankfort, were re-elected to two-year terms.

Other directors, whose terms will expire in 2017, are Rob Ogalla of Monee and Everett Moeller, chairman, of Beecher.

Will, Grundy counties under winter weather advisory

A winter weather advisory has been issued for Will and Grundy counties from 11 p.m. Wednesday through 2 p.m.

Thursday as several inches of snow is predicted to fall in the area.

The National Weather Service in Chicago said snow is expected to develop late Wednesday and diminish by Thursday afternoon. The heaviest snowfall rates will occur between the early and mid-morning hours Thursday. Accumulations of 2 to 3 inches are expected, according to the advisory.

The snow could reduce visibility to less than one mile at times and cause slippery road conditions, including during Thursday morning’s commute.

Broncato, Trotter face off in Circuit Clerk primary

mmallory@shawmedia.com The Republican primary election March 15 for Grundy County Circuit Clerk is a battle between a veteran of the clerk’s office and a veteran of both public and private offices.

Karen Broncato of Coal City and Corri Trotter of Morris are competing to fill the seat of four-term Grundy County Circuit Clerk Karen Slattery, who announced in August 2015 she would not run for re-election after 16 years in the position.

Broncato, the current chief deputy circuit clerk, immediately announced her intention to run for the seat. A few days later, Trotter – the principal’s secretary at Morris Community High School – announced her intention to run. The winner will face in the November general election Joan Harrop of Morris, who filed as the only Democratic candidate.

When campaigning to voters, Broncato said she’s shared her experience in the clerk’s office as the biggest reason one should vote for her. Broncato was hired by former Circuit Clerk Rose Marie Bell in 1994 and put in charge of child support, where she recorded and annually distributed millions of dollars. Since then, she’s learned the Circuit Clerk’s Office inside and out.

“In 20 years, I can’t say there’s a position I haven’t been trained in,” Broncato said.

Because she has been chief deputy circuit clerk for 15 years, Broncato said she has managed the office whenever Slattery was unable to and has communicated with everyone from pro-se litigants to the most experienced attorneys.

Although Trotter has not worked for a court system, she has shared with voters her experience in many different settings. She served as office manager for her family’s small business, totaling 10-plus years of experience in customer relations and accounting for a multimillion-dollar budget. She’s managed and kept schedule for nearly 50 employees including payroll, union reporting and all company billing and payables. She also founded and leads the Morris-area chapter of Turn The Towns Teal Inc, a nonprofit charity.

Though their backgrounds differ, a main point of both candidates’ campaigns has been the need to upgrade the circuit court’s technology. On Jan. 1, 2018, electronic filing will become mandatory in all Illinois circuit courts.

Currently, 15 of 102 counties in Illinois do electronic filing, Broncato said.

On Grundy County’s judici site, summaries and dates are accessible, but actual court documents are not. Broncato said the court’s relationship with its vendor, www.judici.com, is strong and expects to complete e-filing upgrades before the state’s mandate. She’s also considering other vendors and will seek to make the transition smooth and at the least cost to taxpayers.

Brooke Shupe of Frankfort and Elizabeth Johnson of Morris are vying for the opportunity to face Republican incumbent Jason Helland in the November general election.

Shupe is employed as a Cook County assistant state’s attorney, where she has worked the past four years prosecuting criminal and DUI cases. She said it her duty to serve the community and to keep it safe, and said as a prosecutor she has extensive trial experience.

“What is important to me is having someone with vested interest in the community serving it,” Shupe said. “I believe I am the most competent person for the position.”

“Diversion courts are heavily utilized in many counties and I think veteran court is another diversion court that could benefit the community,” Shupe said. “For the offenders who qualify it’s very important.”

She said she also believes in strict penalties for those involved in drug court who do not comply.

When asked about experience dealing with a nearly $1 million budget that the Grundy County State’s Attorney’s Office handles annually, she said, like most who are elected into the role, doesn’t have firsthand experience but she believes she has the necessary tools to do it successfully.

“Government budgets are the wise allocation of scarce resources,” she said. “It will be my job to make sure the allocation is done properly.”

She said like her constituents, she has to budget daily while running a household with her husband Joel and two children.

After the museum’s soft opening Thursday, a grand opening event is scheduled for April 2, when there will be music, food and the museum’s first-ever silent auction, Vasko said.

Floyd Mansberger – an Illinois archaeologist who owns Fever River Research in Springfield – will speak at the April 2 event to discuss the building’s history, Vasko said.

ROMEOVILLE – A Plainfield man died after a single-vehicle crash Tuesday evening.

The collision happened about 8:45 p.m. on Renwick Road west of George Michas Drive, Romeoville police said in a statement. Stephen Platko, 77, who was driving a black 2008 Toyota, was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The crash remained under investigation Wednesday.

Plainfield to sell weather radios

PLAINFIELD – In an effort to promote severe storm safety, the village of Plainfield will be offering NOAA weather alerting radios at a discounted price from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday or until the radios are sold out, whichever occurs first, according to a news release

from the Plainfield Emergency Management Agency.

Feb. 28 to March 5 has been designated as Severe Weather Preparedness Week in Illinois.

The radios will be on sale for $10 for village residents and for $15 for nonresidents.

The village has partnered with Walgreens Corporate Safety Division and local Walgreens stores to distribute Midland weather alert radios.

People interested in the radios may come to the multipurpose room at the Plainfield Law Enforcement Center, 14300 S. Coil Plus Drive.

There will be representatives on hand from Midland and Walgreens who will assist in programming the radios, if desired. The Plainfield Emergency Management Agency encourages all residents and businesses to buy and use an NOAA all-hazard weather alert radio.

Sharon Lee Thorpe Wollerman Davis, age 71, of Sheffield, died on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2016, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Sharon Thorpe was born July 8, 1944, in Joliet, the daughter of Robert and Ardis (Markgraf) Thorpe. She graduated from Joliet Township High School.

She married Irvin F. Wollerman on Sept. 8, 1962.

She later married Richard A. Davis Sr. on Jan. 2, 1983, in Sarasota, Florida. He died on Dec. 27, 2008.

Sharon has been a lifetime member of the White Shrine.

Survivors include her two beloved sons, Mark K. Wollerman (Kim), and Karl R. Wollerman, both of Sheffield; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her brother, James R. Thorpe; a sister-in-law, Sue Thorpe; a niece and a nephew.

California man who fought fascists in 1930s Spain dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS COLUMBIA, Calif. – Delmer Berg, the last known American survivor who fought fascists in 1930s Spain, has died in northern California.

Berg died Sunday at his home in Columbia, Marina Garde from the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives in New York confirmed in a written statement.

He was 100.

The Modesto Bee reported Tuesday that friend Pat Cervelli said Berg, who she knew for three decades, became politically active early in life.

Berg was among about 2,800 members of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade who sought to defend an elected government from a military rebellion led

by Gen. Francisco Franco. The revolt was successful, and Franco led Spain for decades.

Berg stayed in Spain several months. He told The Modesto Bee in a November interview why he made the decision to help the Spanish working people.

“I was a worker,” Berg told the newspaper. “I was a farmer. I was in support of the Spanish working peo-

ple, and I wanted to go to Spain to help them.”

He was wounded in a bombing at a monastery.

Born in Anaheim on Dec. 20, 1915, Berg spent part of his childhood on a farm near Manteca. Later, Berg lived in Modesto and was the only white member of the local NAACP chapter. Berg worked on housing discrimination and other issues and was a communist most of his life, drawing inquiries from the FBI, the newspaper reported.

Berg served two stints in the U.S. military: once in the National Guard

before going to Spain and again in the East Indies during World War II. Berg later worked as a landscaper and a stonemason. He and his wife, June, who preceded him in death, even built a home of stone and reused lumber.

During his retirement, he was an activist against nuclear weapons and U.S. involvement in Central America and monitored an election in Namibia.

Berg became the last known survivor after John Hovan of Rhode Island died in 2014, according to the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives.

Karen M. Piwowarski, nee Krasowski, age 71, a resident of Plainfield, since 2001 and longtime of Oak Lawn, passed away peacefully and surrounded by the love of her family on March 1, 2016, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home. She was born on Sept. 20, 1944, in Chicago.

Karen is survived by her loving daughter, Janeen (John) Barloga of Minooka; and her cherished grandchildren, Allison and Joey Barloga; as well as many extended family members and good friends.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph A. Piwowarski; her loving son, Joseph W. Piwowarski and her infant son, Joseph J.; and infant daughter, Mary T. Piwowarski; her dear parents, Martha and Walter Krasowski; and her brothers, Richard Krasowski and Jerry (Jeanne) Krasowski.

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Such is the topsy-turvy state of Illinois politics that two of the hottest primary contests this month have power brokers from both parties spending millions to boot one of their own from office.

State Rep. Ken Dunkin, a Chicago Democrat, and state Sen. Sam McCann, a Springfield Republican, face highstake challenges, primarily for their votes on union-related issues. The races are seen as indicators of the consequences lawmakers can expect when they defy the wishes of their party leaders – House Speaker Michael Madigan and Gov. Bruce Rauner, respectively.

Over three decades in power, Madigan, a Chicago Democrat, has built a reputation for running a disciplined majority that rarely deviates from what he wants by being a prolific fundraiser who rewards loyalty. Rauner, a suburban Chicago Republican, is a political

Law enforcement urges end to Illinois budget standoff

SPRINGFIELD – Prosecutors and law enforcement officials criticized Illinois lawmakers and Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner on Wednesday for failing to pass a state budget, saying their nine-month standoff is hurting public safety.

State county attorneys, sheriffs and police chiefs focused their comments on youth crime-diversion programs that are serving fewer teens because they haven’t gotten state funding since July 1, when the current year budget should have taken effect. Law enforcement officials argued that lack of funding for those programs will hurt the state in the long term.

More than half of the state’s counties that participate in Redeploy Illinois, which provides counseling to teens at risk of incarceration, have left the program, affecting almost 300 youths who would have been served, according to a survey

by Fight Crime: Invest in Kids. The survey also found that about 1,800 youths no

newcomer and former venture capitalist who has vowed to use his wealth to help politicians who support his pro-business agenda, which includes restricting the power of unions in the state.

“Here’s what I see,” Dunkin said re-

cently at a Chicago campaign event, “after we’re successful March 15, you’re going to see other Democratic members standing up for their constituents by doing what’s right for citizens across the state and in their district. They’re going to say, ‘Oh, wow, Dunkin survived the Mike Madigan wrath.’ ” McCann said he Sen. Sam knows of Republicans McCann in both chambers who are not voting the way they want.

“They’re afraid of the backlash,” he said.

Party unity has played a particularly important role during the state’s budget stalemate. Dunkin has been the spoiler for Democrats on several key votes affecting union allies, either by being absent or voting against party-led attempts to weaken Rauner’s position in negotiations with the state

Dunkin’s race has practical implications for House Democrats, whose 71-47 advantage over Republicans gives them the power to override gubernatorial vetoes – provided they all stick together.

Dunkin’s isolation from his party was evident last month when President Barack Obama gave a speech about collaboration to state lawmakers in Springfield.

Ill. EPA gets warning about emissions testing reminders

CHICAGO – Federal officials are warning the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency of environmental consequences after the state announced it will temporarily allow license plate renewals without emissions tests.

Last month, the IEPA announced it would stop mailing emissions test reminders because of Illinois’ budget gridlock. Motorists with license plates that expire by the end of March won’t receive notices. Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White said he’s allowing renewals temporarily to avoid an unfair burden to residents.

However, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency sent a Feb. 19 letter to Illinois officials saying the changes could “adversely impact air quality.”

Federal officials want more details about the changes.

NORMAL – An apparent information breach at Illinois State University allowed someone to divert the direct-deposit payroll payments of more than a dozen faculty and staff members to another account, according to university officials.

CHICAGO – A federal judge has sentenced a veteran Chicago police officer to two years in prison for using excessive force in the September 2012 beating of a convenience store clerk captured by surveillance cameras.

Aldo Brown was convicted in October of excessive force. He testified at his trial that he began throwing punches at Jecque Howard only after he realized Howard had a handgun in his back pocket.

U.S. District Judge Virginia Kendall told Brown Wednesday, “We can’t have a police community where it’s us v. them.”

She also said his testimony was not believable, but Brown insisted he never lied.

Rattled GOP seeking a strategy to stop Trump The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – Staring down the prospect of nominating Donald Trump for president, Republicans spiraled into a chaotic, last-ditch search Wednesday for a way to save the GOP from hitching its fortunes to an unpredictable celebrity candidate without alienating his throng of followers.

Sensing a window closing fast, GOP leaders and elder statesmen toggled through a menu of scenarios but landed on none. Some amplified calls to rally around a Trump alternative, even if that alternative is Ted Cruz, a prickly conservative with few friends in the party.

Others laid out still-hazy plans for a brokered national convention, an option likely to smack of the backroom dealing Trump fans despise. Some floated more extreme measures, talking of breaking from the party and starting anew.

“It’s all a play to stall it or try to deny him the nomination,” said Neil Newhouse, a GOP pollster. “And the problem with that is no one has the best scenario for how to do that.”

The scrambling came as the billionaire candidate racked up commanding victories in seven of 11 Super Tuesday primary contests, and the path to victory for his rivals narrowed. Trump’s strength – which stretched from the Deep South to New England – exposed the depths of the divisions within the party, no matter who becomes the nominee in

this election.

As Republicans surveyed the wreckage from Trump’s surge, some argued there still was a chance to stop him. He was not yet on track to claim the nomination before the party’s national gathering in July, according to an Associated Press delegate count. He has won 46 percent of the delegates awarded so far, and he would have to increase that to 51 percent in the remaining primaries.

“Trump had a good night, but he left the door open,” said David Winston, a Republican pollster.

The GOP mayhem contrasted sharply with a clearer picture on the Democratic side, where Hillary Clinton on Tuesday locked down solid victories in seven states and was on the path to regaining her status as the inevitable nominee.

Rival Sen. Bernie Sanders vowed to keep up the fight, campaigning in Maine on Wednesday.

Sanders, a fierce opponent of big money in politics, quoted director and screenwriter Adam McKay, winner of this year’s Oscar for “The Big Short” adapted screenplay, who warned about candidates who take major contributions from “weirdo billionaires.”

Republicans, meanwhile, looked for a wise man to calm the jitters and point the way.

Mitt Romney, their nominee four years ago, suggested he might try to fill that role. The former Massachusetts governor announced plans to speak on the “state of the 2016 presidential race” Thursday in Utah.

Dick Durbin campaigned on students being able to refinance their college loans.

Guess what? He’s re-elected, and the bill has been sitting in committee for over a year. Have you seen the ads on TV of people demanding their disability money? They look healthy to me.

I agree, I do not want my tax dollars

going to illegal aliens. I also agree that the problems of high taxes (Illinois is one of the highest in the nation) have developed over six decades and are the fault of our politicians. It is called buying votes. The more welfare, the more people keep voting to keep it continuing.

Generation after generation lives on the welfare rolls. The same politicians keep getting elected. I believe Michael Madigan has been in Springfield for 30 years.

Haven’t we had enough of the career politicians, graft and corruption?

We have people promising more of the same. Another voicing our anger and disgust. Either one will only add to the current mess both locally, state and federally. Changes in gratitude, and changes in attitude In December, Princeton professor Robert P. George was in the hospital with heart trouble, and it did not sound good. At the time, I happened to be at a conference with many of his friends, colleagues and admirers. We prayed. We were not alone. Robby is one of those people who, like Justice Antonin Scalia, are irreplaceable. Our public and intellectual lives wouldn’t be the same without him.

He’s long back at work now. And so, I naturally thought of him during the controversy over clothing retailer Lands’ End and a profile of feminist icon Gloria Steinem that ran in its spring catalog – a profile that led to a massive outcry from customers and an apology from the company. In numerous interviews over the years, Steinem has said, “Gratitude never radicalized anybody.”

Steinem’s comment stuck in my mind because it struck me as so very wrong. Gratitude can change everything radically.

When Robert George found himself in the hospital with a life-threatening condition, he was overwhelmed with prayer. “People who were

The outpouring of love from people he didn’t know “radically changed my life,” George told me. “Because of their prayers and God’s goodness, I now understand every day as a gift.

No burden, no disappointment, no difficulty changes that. What’s more, in the spirit of gratitude I now see that prior to my illness I spent far too much of my time focused on myself.

I thought of myself as someone who lives much of his life for others, but I’m now struck by just how little of my life I did actually live for others. Don’t get me wrong. I’m still a sinner, and fall short. I’m still not nearly as selfless as I should be. But at least I now understand – deeply, existentially, not merely notionally – that it makes no sense to live one’s life for oneself. The only truly sane way to live one’s life is for others. Radically.”

Looking around and really, truly giving thanks – being overwhelmed by love. That’s the blessed place in which Robert George finds himself. I passed by him right before the Washington, D.C., funeral Mass for Justice Scalia, and I couldn’t help but be calmed by

the presence of a man at peace. Gratitude does that.

Peace. That’s as radical as you can get in our divided, scattered, shattered world.

“So don’t tell me that gratitude never radicalized someone,” George tells me. “Every morning when I brush my teeth and look at the guy in the mirror, I see someone who was radicalized by gratitude. For which, I must say, I am radically grateful.”

For someone like Steinem who sees herself as a political radical, gratitude can be a sign of weakness. As the Rev. Aquinas Guilbeau from the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C., puts it: Gratitude uproots us “from pride and self-centeredness.

Gratitude requires a recognition of the debt we owe to others, which touching the most important things in life – like life itself – is a debt we cannot repay.”

It’s the ultimate in revolutionary thinking.

dgoss@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – With the game tied for the fifth time in the fourth quarter and eighth time in all, Jose Grubbs and Malik Fuller decided they did not want Joliet Central’s season to end Wednesday night.

Grubbs hit an off-balance shot from the side of the lane with 1 minute 8 seconds left to give the Steelmen the lead for good, 41-39, over Plainfield East in the semifinals of the Class 4A Lincoln-Way Central Regional.

Then Grubbs blocked a shot, took the ball and was fouled. He missed the front end of a one-and-one, But Fuller rebounded, was fouled and hit one of two free throws. Before it ended, Fuller claimed two more defensive boards and made one of two foul shots each time to help Central secure a 46-43 victory.

The Steelmen (15-12), the No. 7 seed in the Lockport Sectional, will take on No. 2 Lincoln-Way Central in Friday night’s regional final.

“I guess I pulled a rabbit out of the hat,” Grubbs said with a smile about

the off-balance 8-footer that gave Central the lead for good. “I was just trying to take what the defense gave me. It was a gift from God.” Then it was Fuller time.

“Malik is as tough as nails,” East coach Branden Adkins said. “He just goes get it.”

Fuller spent the night in the grill of 6-foot-7 Elyjah Goss, and vice versa.

Fuller finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds, 10 in the second half. Goss had eight points, 12 boards and a half-dozen blocks.

“He’s got size,” Fuller said of Goss.

“He’s a heck of a player. He’s athletic.

He’s one of the better ones I have gone against. I tried to battle him. There at the end, I just tried to give our team the best chance to win I could.”

Grubbs, who finished with 11 points, also had some meetings with Goss, who is adept at protecting the entire basket area.

“He is huge,” Grubbs said. “He has great jumping ability. He’s blocking shots at the top of the glass. But there is a way to attack him. You have to go

ing the first team to win all three major awards in the same season. Mariyah Brawner-Henley is the GLVC Player of the Year, Jessica Kelliher is the Freshman of the Year, and Kristen Gillespie is the Coach of the Year. Gillespie helped lead Lewis to a 27-1, 18-0 GLVC record.

Brawner-Henley ranks 10th in the nation in points (20.4) and ninth in rebounds (11.5) a game. The senior owns 69 career double-doubles, second most in NCAA DII history, and she owns the GLVC’s career rebounding record (1,238).

First Team honoree Kelliher finished the regular season fourth in the GLVC in scoring with an average of 18.5 points a game, the best mark for a freshman in the nation. Kelliher recorded 11 games of 20-plus points. Her 63.4 field goal percentage ranks second in the nation.

JOLIET – After they were named Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season champions, both University of St. Francis basketball squads earned automatic berths and will compete next March 10 in the first round of the NAIA Division II National Tournament.

The men’s team will face York (Neb.) College at 9:15 p.m. at Keeter Gymnasium in Point Lookout, Missouri; and the women Saints will battle Asbury at 10:15 a.m. at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Both teams are athletic around the perimeter as well, so the relatively low score was no surprise. While Central was trying to rebound from last week’s losses to Bolingbrook and Joliet West, East (14-12) was hoping to stay hot. The Bengals finished the season on a roll, although they had not played in eight days going into Wednesday.

Central finished a sluggish first half with a 20-19 lead and led by a much as six points early in the third quarter.

However, the Bengals were back within 33-31 after three quarters. They never led in the fourth quarter but retied the score at 33, 35, 37, 39 and 41. It was that kind of game.

“We never could escape them,” said Adkins, whose team’s biggest lead was at 17-13.

“Give the credit to Brian [Koehne, Central’s assistant coach],” Corcoran said. “He spent hours studying them, and he put it together. What we knew was we wanted to play here Friday night.”

In addition to Fuller and Grubbs, sophomore guard Cameron Blackmon came up big for the Steelmen.

Wild regional results the rule in semifinals VIEWS Dick Goss Providence Catholic boys basketball coach Tim Trendel said he has asked more of this team than any in his six years with the Celtics.

“I knew we had good kids,” he said after Tuesday’s 61-37 upset victory over Joliet Catholic in the semifinals of the Class 3A Lincoln-Way West Regional. “The leadership programs, the service hours, giving up their Sundays, the way they stuck together though the tough times – that’s why I was saying we would be playing our best basketball in March.”

Providence (13-18) was 3-11 after a 51-43 loss at JCA on Jan. 9. The Celtics have gone 10-7 against a tough schedule since then, including finishing third in the Chicago Catholic League Tournament.

Trendel maintained all along that this team is not one that Class 3A opponents would want to see coming in the postseason. So far, the Celtics have proved him prophetic.

“We might not be the most talented Providence team, but this is one of our best teams in terms of staying together and covering for each other,” he said.

Next up for the Celtics is Friday night’s regional final against Lincoln-Way West. The Warriors (17-9), led by Marco Pettinato, beat stubborn Rich East, 64-57, on Tuesday.

For JCA (21-6), the loss to Providence was stunning, not from the standpoint that the Celtics won, but the way they dominated. Or, from the other perspective, how much of a subpar game the Hilltoppers had at exactly the wrong time. Providence not only shot well, but the Celtics’ box-and-one defense shut down East Suburban Catholic Conference Player of the Year and two-time scoring leader Jalen Jackson.

“We were prepared for their boxand-one,” JCA coach Joe Gura said.

“Our guys did not want to take the shots that were there. We didn’t go to the spots where the open jumpers were available against the zone. And we didn’t go to the basket.

“We were caught in the middle, and I was caught in the middle myself. It wasn’t a night to scream and yell and throw things, with what was going on.

It was a night to try to encourage.”

Gura said it was not the way the Hilltoppers wanted such an outstanding season to end.

“This in no way takes away from the year we had,” he said. “We made basketball important again at JCA. We were 9-9 in the conference the last two

years after going five years without winning a conference game.

“I tip my hat to Providence for the way they played, and I think we had a tremendous season. The kids are disappointed it ended in a game where they played this badly.”

The JCA-Providence game was among several involving area teams on our version of super Tuesday. In each Class 4A game, the higher seed prevailed, but usually not without a struggle. That was expected in a postseason where most of the contestants are matched so evenly.

We can begin with Plainfield North’s 61-53 victory over Sandburg at Neuqua Valley. North trailed, 17-2 and 26-6, before rallying to get within 29-17 at halftime. The Tigers then scored 44 second-half points to overtake the Eagles and advance to Friday night’s final against Joliet West.

Henry Thompson scored 23 points and Kevin Krieger added 18 for North (18-9), which has won 10 of its last 12.

Joliet West (19-9), meanwhile, went to the final seconds to hold off Neuqua Valley, 50-48.

Plainfield North and Joliet West,

the No. 6 and 3 seeds in the Class 4A Lockport Sectional, met in the Pontiac Holiday Tournament, and West escaped, 66-63, amid some controversy.

This one could deliver a similar sort of wild finish.

At Pontiac, Thompson hit the apparent game-tying 3-pointer with 3 seconds left. But a whistle that could

have been blown several seconds earlier was blown just as Thompson was about to release his shot, so the 3-pointer was disallowed.

At Lincoln-Way Central, Plainfield South (9-21) led the No. 2 Knights (188), 34-31, early in the fourth quarter before Central took command to win, 51-44. The Knights will see the winner of Wednesday night’s Joliet Central versus Plainfield East game in Friday’s final.

And at Minooka, the top-seeded Indians (22-8) survived Romeoville, 5146, in overtime. Perhaps the competitiveness of the game was not surprising considering the teams split two close Southwest Prairie matchups.

Next up for Minooka is Friday’s final against red-hot Bolingbrook (15-10), which has won nine of 10 after eliminating Lemont, 61-45, on Tuesday. This one is not unlike the regional finals at Neuqua Valley and Lincoln-Way Central. If either side is the favorite in each game, it is not by much.

A quick comparison with last season might suggest that this wasn’t a great year for area wrestlers.

After all, local schools only had one individual state champion, compared with five a year ago, and three teams made it to the dual team finals, after four advanced in 2015.

But this past season may be just as memorable for ushering in a new era, highlighted by a young and talented group of athletes who figure to leave quite a mark.

The three squads who got to team state – Lockport and Providence Catholic in Class 3A and Coal City in Class 1A – all are reflective of this new wave of good, young wrestlers.

Freshmen who put together impressive seasons were a big part of all three teams, and they were joined in equally large numbers by sophomores who did the same.

The results were trophies for all three programs, which laid a great foundation for them to do the same next season.

Coal City claimed its second-straight trophy and reached its first title meet since 1998, giving four-time champion Dakota all it could handle in the finals.

Lockport also picked up a second trophy and improved one spot on last year’s fourthplace effort. And Providence took fourth after returning to state for the first time since 2008.

The Porters graduate about 10 percent of their wins, with that total belonging to three-time medal winner Shayne Oster – who fell just short in his quest for a second-straight title against a three-time champion, St. Rita’s Austin O’Connor, who also lives in Lockport.

This marked the end of an era for the Oster family, who played a huge role in helping the Porters to statewide success. The five brothers combined for 679 wins and

The oldest of the brothers, Josh, already has led three teams to state during his five years as coach and seems ready to become a regular feature at the event, since the Porters figure to add even more talented wrestlers to their already-successful program.

The last few seasons had been disappointing ones for coach Keith Healy at Providence. After producing one of the greatest stretches of domination in any sport in state history, the Celtics struggled the past few years.

But a talented group of newcomers kick-started things a year ago, and another really good contingent built on that this year as the Celtics got better as the season unfolded. They not only ended their long state

drought, but also came away with a trophy.

Providence only graduates about 15 percent of its wins, so it seems a pretty good bet that with more good competitors likely coming on board, both the Celtics and Porters will again be among the top Class 3A programs over the next few seasons.

It’s a similar story in Coal City, where coach Mark Masters’ program challenged Dakota’s dominance in the state’s smallest class.

While the Coalers suffered greater losses to graduation than Lockport or Providence – with state champion Riley Kauzlaric and two-time finalist Joey Rivera moving on – they still have a lot of good wrestlers in the fold.

Another program that certainly was good enough to get a trophy this season but was the victim of the IHSA’s

unfair structuring of the competition was Lincoln-Way West.

Coach Brian Glynn’s Warriors were ranked third in Class 2A throughout the season and proved that point when they gave eventual champion Washington a good battle in the sectional.

Although West certainly has been good enough over the past few years to get several trophies, it has had the bad luck of running into finalists in the sectionals, so it has been able to get to state only once.

But those who’ve watched closely know what West has accomplished and look forward to seeing how the squad makes the transition to competing in Class 3A. It was another successful season for schools in the Plainfield district. North not only had its first medalist, Marcus Povlick, but he also

was a finalist. East’s Michael McGee was a finalist again, and the Bengals won two medals for the first time.

And South followed up on its third-straight Southwest Prairie title by also getting two placewinners for the first time.

Three others also reached title matches. Lincoln-Way Central’s Bryan Ditchman showed why he’s been one of the state’s best big men for three-straight years, while Lemont’s Egan Berta and Morris’ Cody Baldridge both also got to the finals.

So although 2016 maybe wasn’t perhaps a banner year for local wrestling, it certainly could go down as a memorable one for the foundation that it established for upcoming seasons.

The Associated Press DETROIT – Patrick Kane had a goal and an assist 1:24 apart on power plays in the second period and Artemi Panarin scored twice, helping the Blackhawks rout the Detroit Red Wings, 5-2, on Wednesday night.

Kane assisted Panarin on a 5-on-3 goal and scored with a one-man advantage to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead. Kane finished with three points, extending his NHL-leading total to 88 to match his career high set during the 2009-10 season.

Corey Crawford didn’t give up a goal until midway through the third period when Brad Richards scored.

Andrew Ladd restored the three-goal

ORLANDO, Fla. – Nikola Vucevic scored 24 points, rookie Mario Hezonja added a career-high 21, and the Orlando Magic beat the Bulls, 102-89, Wednesday night.

Victor Oladipo scored 17 points and Aaron Gordon had 13 points and 15 rebounds as Orlando coasted to an easy win. Elfrid Payton had nine points and 12 assists.

Derrick Rose led the Bulls with 16 points, all in the first half. Pau Gas-

ol had 12 points, and Doug McDermott was the only other Bulls player in double figures with 11.

Both teams were on the second game of back-tobacks, and it looked it. Orlando hit only 40.2 percent, while the Bulls shot just 38.4 percent from the field.

The Magic took a 17-point lead into the fourth quarter and never were seriously challenged.

Rose and Gasol didn’t play in the final period, and the closest the Bulls’ reserves could get to 90-74 with 8:14 left in the game.

The Magic hit five of six shots to start the third quarter, including a 3-pointer by Hezonja that helped Orlando take a 7454 lead. Payton and Oladipo pushed the pace against the Bulls’ sluggish defense and the quick tempo provided plenty of open shots in the 15- to 18-foot range.

Vucevic, Hezonja and Oladipo made enough of them to keep Orlando comfortably ahead for the entire second half.

The Bulls’ offense also stayed on the perimeter, but without much success.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Angel Rodriguez matched his season high with 19 points, Sheldon McClellan added 17, and No. 7 Miami jumped to an early 18-point lead and beat Notre Dame, 68-50, Wednesday night to move back into a tie with North Carolina for first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Hurricanes (245, 13-4) held the Fighting Irish (19-10, 10-7) to

a season-low 34 percent shooting as Notre Dame struggled offensively for the fourth straight game, losing three of those. The Hurricanes also had an 3916 advantage in rebounds and a 32-24 edge in points in the paint.

Zach Auguste led the Irish with 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Bonzie Colson add 11 points.

The focus in camp has been on quality of practice, Lawrie said.

“You give me 10 groundballs, and I’m going to do all those 10 at the top of the game with good form and everything. I’m not going to be tired at the end of that. I’m going to get more out of that than if I do 50 groundballs and being tired at the end with bad form.”

Lawrie, a native of British Columbia, was sent by Milwaukee to Toronto while still in the minors, in 2010. He played for the Blue Jays until being dealt to Oakland after the 2014 season.

Toronto acquired Josh Donaldson to play third base in that trade, and while the Jays went on to win the AL East in part thanks to Donaldson’s MVP-winning season, the A’s languished and finished with the AL’s worst record, 68-94.

Lawrie hit .260 with a career-high 16 homers for Oakland. Injuries limited him to 70 games with the Jays in 2014, but he managed to hit 12 homers that season.

“I was happy for my (former) teammates, but at the same time, you wish you could have done that when you were there,” Lawrie said.

GLENDALE, Ariz. – It’s another season and another team – and an old position – for Brett Lawrie.

The one-time top prospect with Toronto, now 26, is hoping to restart his career and bring his trademark energy to the South Side of Chicago.

His task, aside from adjusting to fulltime duty at second base, is to help ignite a White Sox team that sometimes seemed lethargic in a fourth-place finish a year ago.

“It’s all positive, and everybody likes to have fun; but at the same time, when we get between the lines, everybody likes to ramp it up. When the bell rings, we’re ready to go,” Lawrie said at Camelback Ranch this week.

“The personalities are nice, but we have some guys who can play. They like to compete,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “That’s the fun part.”

“There’s definitely some energy in the clubhouse,” center fielder Adam Eaton said. “It’s only going to help the team.”

Ventura likes Lawrie’s energy, but that’s just part of his appeal to the manager.

“He’s a solid player. He’s a versatile player, a smart player as far as taking the extra base, baserunning, defense,” he said.

The Sox originally were looking for a third baseman when they sent two minor leaguers to the Oakland A’s for Lawrie during the December winter meetings. But a week later, Todd Frazier was acquired from Cincinnati, pushing Lawrie to second base.

With the recent addition of veteran shortstop Jimmy Rollins, and Tyler Saladino moving from third to short, the Sox have completely retooled their infield.

“It’s just getting out there and taking ground balls and just playing beside them all the time,” Lawrie said.

“The more that you can play with each other, you get more comfortable and just getting to know each other as teammates as well.

“Getting the reps and seeing the angle and repeating the double-play feeds and keeping it simple, not trying to do anything spectacular.”

Lawrie has played 80 games at second base in the major leagues, including 42 last year in Oakland. He was a full-timer at that position in the minors when he was in the Milwaukee Brewers’ system.

As the numbers wind down Lockport man praying for live kidney donor

LOCKPORT – Most Christians understand that tomorrow is not promised. But Martin Peto wants a shot at it anyway.

The words on this Lockport’s man’s paperwork for Loyola University Medical Center hint otherwise: chronic kidney disease, stage 4; focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (scar tissue on the kidneys’ filtering units); and acute renal (kidney) failure.

Peto said his only real hope is a kidney transplant. But the waiting list for cadaver transplants is long, and Peto fears that list might outlive him.

His other option is a live donor, Peto said, but his doctors told him recipients find those donors on their own.

That is easier said than done. Peto said he is an only child. His father is 72 and lives in central Illinois. Peto is praying a healthy human angel with type O or type A-positive blood will step up and help, if not for Peto or his family, then for love of God and altruistic compassion.

“Most people donate because a family member is sick or their child is sick. Well, I’m not so lucky,” Peto said. “I don’t have a family member that can donate to me.”

The faith walk begins

Peto said his health troubles began in December 2013 with flu symptoms. His doctor prescribed antibiotics, which temporarily cleared up the symptoms. When the next round hit harder, Peto said his doctor ordered a chest X-ray.

That showed fluid around his lungs. Peto said he was hospitalized for double pneumonia.

Additional tests showed a mitral valve that needed repairing. At the time of the repair, Peto learned he had acute renal failure, most likely a side effect of his former high blood pressure, he said.

Years ago, after taking

he’s worked hard to mature and become a responsible Christian man.

“As we get older, we – hopefully – get a little more wiser, and we appreciate simpler things,” Peto said. “You learn what life really is about. Your goals and aspirations change.

I hope I have matured, as a man, a father and a Christian person.”

Peto said he is not afraid to die, but he is afraid of leaving his family bereft, of them having to watch their incapacitated husband and father suffer.

He cannot retire until he turns 50 in August. A less-taxing job, Peto said, isn’t possible.

With further global warming, both mosquitoes will move farther north, since they prefer warm climates.

• Why don’t we have good tests, treatments and vaccines for Zika virus? Public health professionals long have known about Zika. We could have been developing tests, treatments and vaccines for it, but that costs money.

Without enough money, we can’t plan for every possible epidemic, or even every likely epidemic. So public health authorities have to prioritize. Until Zika spread to the Western Hemisphere and began to create serious disease, it was a low priority.

So will we be protected against future epidemics of Zika virus? Of Ebola? Of lethal influenza? To some extent. But the greater the investment we make in public health today, the safer we’ll be tomorrow.

In my opinion, we should be investing much more. In addition to protecting us against suffering, each dollar invested in public health saves many dollars in medical expenses averted. It is local, state and federal governments that invest the most in public health. That means we the people need to decide to invest more.

Dear Readers: In yesterday’s column, I answered questions about the Zika virus.

Today, I’d like to answer several more, and also talk about how we can protect ourselves against this and other epidemics.

• What should I do to protect myself against Zika virus? In my opinion, as of today, there is no reason for most people living in the United States and Canada to be concerned about this virus. The exception is women who are pregnant, who could be in the earliest stages of pregnancy and not yet know it or who soon could become pregnant.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has advised such women to avoid traveling to the areas of the Western Hemisphere where the Zika virus is rapidly spreading. That includes Mexico and many countries in the Caribbean, Central America and South America. You can find a constantly updated listing of areas with the virus, and much more information about the virus itself, at www.cdc.gov/zika.

Great Britain has advised men who travel to countries where the virus is present to use condoms for about one month during travel and after returning home, which seems like a good idea to me.

• Why are we suddenly faced with this virus we never heard about before? Because epidemics don’t explode until they suddenly do. Sometimes a virus (or other infectious germ) mutates in a way that allows it to more easily infect humans.

Sometimes it is carried to a part of the world where it never has been before, such as by a traveler. If the virus is carried by an insect, the environment can change in a way that favors that insect.

That is apropos, with the caucuses coming thick and fast. In this deal, though, South needs to get across the table. How can he do it?

South is in four hearts, and the defenders begin with two rounds of clubs.

The South hand was a tad light for a two-club opening. But after East balanced with a takeout double, it was reasonable for South to jump to four hearts. Yes, if North were short in the majors, it would have backfired badly, but such pessimism almost never works at the bridge table.

East was tempted to double for a second time with his 18-pointer, but he was worried that if partner ran to, say, five diamonds, that would turn a plus score into a minus. (Note that five diamonds will go down one, but five clubs by East is unbeatable.

If East had doubled again, and West didn’t pass, he should have moved with four no-trump, which would have shown a two-suiter.)

South must hope that the spade finesse is working, so that he can collect these 10 tricks: five spades, four hearts and one diamond. But how can he get to the board to take the finesse? Only via the heart nine.

Declarer must be careful to ruff the second club high and to continue with a top trump.

Suppose East wins and leads another club. South ruffs high, cashes his last top trump, overtakes the heart eight with the nine, and runs the spade 10 to get home.

Then East will ruefully regret not passing out one spade!
