Joliet cell tower location proves controversial

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Knights of Columbus is at odds with nearby neighbors over whether it should use available land for a cellular phone tower.

The Knights of Columbus said the deal to make land available for a cell tower will bring in revenue needed to keep its Infantry Drive building open.

Neighbors said it will spoil the view and their quality of life.

The Joliet City Council is scheduled to decide Tuesday on whether to let the cell tower be built.

Bob Schmitt, building manager for the Knights of Columbus hall, told the council at its

Monday workshop meeting that the organization needs to use the land south of its building to raise revenue and keep operating. The alternative, he said, is to sell the land for commercial development. That, he said, would be worse for the neighbors.

“Instead of a cell tower thousands of feet away, there’s going to be light towers all over the place,” Schmitt said.

“This is not a scare tactic. This is what we need to do to survive.”

Attorney Robert Kogen, representing the Golf View Estates and Inwood Terrace developments, told the council a cell tower would be “devastating” to the homeowners.

“The residents would be looking daily at that cell tow-

er,” Kogen said. “They would be very upset by it.”

Residents also spoke against it.

Rosemary Breen from Golf View Estates said she was concerned the tower “could interfere with any electronic we have in our home.”

City staff has recommended against the location. But the Zoning Board of Appeals recommended approval of it.

Staff wants the cell tower operator to install the tower at Memorial Stadium, which is owned by the Joliet Park District. A representative from the company that located the Infantry Drive site said a 120foot tower could not be built at the stadium because it is too close to the Joliet Park District airport.

City council torn on video board for Joliet Slammers

By BOB OKON bokon@shawemedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Slammers said they’re worried their old scoreboard won’t work on opening day, but the City Council is torn over whether it should spend $361,000 for a new one.

Not just a scoreboard, the board includes a video screen used for advertising, displaying images at concerts and playing movies on Friday nights.

The city owns Silver Cross Field and agreed in 2012 to buy a new video board to replace the one that was built with the stadium. Silver Cross Field was built in 2002.

The matter will be on the council agenda for a vote on Tuesday.

The existing board is “not only obsolete. It’s two years beyond its life span,” Slammers CEO Josh Schaub told the City Council at its workshop meeting Monday. “If we turn this thing on in the

spring and it does not turn on, it will literally be weeks before we can use it.”

Schaub said other minor league teams in Schaumburg and Crestwood are getting new boards. And, those boards are bigger and better than the ones the Slammers want the city to buy.

City Council members said they understood the need for a new video board. But the city has other needs that may be more pressing.

Plus, the city only budgeted $150,000 this year for a board, planning to buy it on a two-year installment plan.

Staff now recommends buying it with one payment, instead of financing and paying interest.

Councilman John Gerl, however, said interest rates are low. He wanted staff to present a two-year payment plan at the Tuesday meeting.

Gerl said he understood the need for a modern video board, noting they are becoming a bigger part of the

baseball experience. Also, he suggested the team and Joliet would not look very good without a working scoreboard at Silver Cross Field.

“You go to any Pinto game, any Little League game – they have a functioning scoreboard,” Gerl said. “I’m concerned that if we don’t have a functioning scoreboard on opening day, that says something about who we are and who the team is.”

Opening day is May 19.

Councilmen Bob O’Dekirk and Jim McFarland questioned whether the city should buy a video board, pointing to the possibilities that the state may take away revenue.

“We always have competing demands for our money,” City Manager Jim Hock said.

But Hock noted that the city made an agreement to provide a new video board. “The existing video board is on its last legs. It’s been extended a couple of years beyond its traditional life now.”

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Rialto Square Theatre faces about $1 million in repairs – some the building manager said are needed just to keep the building safe.

At the historic theater, built in 1926, the big public issue in recent months has been what a new marquee should look like.

But the theater faces big bills to keep chunks of its outside walls from coming down, maintain a chimney that has been falling apart and keep the boilers running in the basement to make sure the place is heated.

General Manager Randy Green said the Rialto does not have money to pay for the repairs and the only answer is to begin a new capital campaign to raise funds.

“We’re at the end of a $5 million capital campaign,” Green noted. But the Rialto may have to start a new one, he said.

The last of this capital campaign’s money is going into the $2.2 million in terra cotta work now being done. As it turns out, about $800,000 is needed to finish the job.

Building Manager Mike Biedron laid out the to-do list

at last week’s meeting of the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority, the board that oversees the Rialto.

‘Paying the price now’

Biedron at times described unsafe conditions in the building and more than once suggested a history of deferred maintenance because of the Rialto’s ongoing budget challenges.

When one of the two boilers used to heat the building broke down recently, it likely was because of the use of lowcost maintenance alternatives, Biedron said.

“I’m going to guess that years ago there was no money for boiler treatment, and we just deferred it,” he said.

“We’re paying the price now.”

Biedron asked the board to buy a water softener, which would improve the condition of the water running through the boilers. The softener being used now, he said, was bought at Menards, and Biedron said the Rialto needs a commercial grade softener.

“This is a $1,200 solution, and we can do the install on it,” Biedron said.

It was the one item on his list that did not cost much.

$2.2 million not enough

The biggest problem is the condition of the terra cotta that decorates the Rialto’s outside walls.

The very visible work being done now involves scaffolding, netting and plastic wrap surrounding the theater.

It’s not just a beautification project. The work became urgent a few years ago, when a large section of the terra cotta fell off the building onto the sidewalk overnight. The $2.2 million project already underway was down-scaled by $400,000 because of a lack of money.

Now, Biedron said, the crews doing the work have discovered new problems in terra cotta not scheduled for replace-

ment. Pieces are splitting in half from the inside, creating a safety hazard.

“I’ve been telling you this for five years now,” Biedron said. “You have a problem out there.”

It will cost $400,000 to replace the deteriorating terra cotta. But the Rialto has the option of spending $26,000 to put up netting, which Biedron described as “chicken wire,” and plastic wrap to keep the pieces in place and the sidewalks below safe.

Biedron said the less expensive option should be good for a couple of years.

“It just depends on what you want to look at,” he said.

That may be what theater-goers look at for a while.

Green said there was no contingency money available. He suggested finding money for the low-cost option may be challenging.

“We don’t generate additional revenues for capital improvements,” Green said later.

In a pinch, he said, the Rialto dips into operating funds to pay for capital costs. But even to pay for operations, the theater depends on a $600,000

Plainfield preschoolers join in Seuss celebration More online

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Dr. Seuss was all the craze with preschoolers Monday in Patty Daw’s class at the Bonnie McBeth Early Learning Center in Plainfield.

In honor of the famed author’s 111th birthday, students incorporated the whimsical worlds and rhyming words of Dr. Seuss into the day’s activities. Monday also marked the annual “Read Across America Day” – a national event sponsored by the National Education Association and Dr. Seuss Enterprises that honor’s Dr. Seuss and encourages reading and learning.

The famed children’s author – whose real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel – wrote and illustrated more than 40 books during his lifetime.

Classmates Vince Schrementi, 4, and Lucas Medina, 5, sat on a couch together in Daw’s classroom, poring over one of Dr. Seuss’ most popular books, “Green Eggs and Ham,” with a magnifying glass in search for the letter “C.” Turns out there aren’t too many Cs in Seuss’ “Green Eggs and Ham,” so they didn’t have much luck. But the two friends had fun all the same.

The letter search was one way preschool students integrated Dr. Seuss in learning exercises. Some used numbers and Seuss characters to match corresponding cards with each other, while Ronny

Daw said Dr. Seuss books are a great way to encourage reading because the author’s use of repetition and rhyming words.

Word and name recognition are frequently incorporated in Daw’s class, she said, as part of the center’s mission to serve both at-risk and traditional preschool students.

On Monday, the nine preschoolers in Daw’s class practiced how to count, as well as recognize names, colors and patterns with the help of Dr. Seuss, she said.

As part of the name recognition exercise, students sat in a half circle while listening to Daw read “The Cat in the Hat.” When they heard Daw say the word “cat,” they had to pass a Cat in the Hat stuffed animal to the person sitting to the right. “ ‘Have no fear!’ said the cat. ‘I will not let you fall. I will hold you up high, as I stand on a ball,’ ” Daw read aloud.

Four-year-old Ramsey Hogan’s eyes lit up and he looked down at the stuffed animal in his hand before passing it off to his friend.

He loves “The Cat in the Hat,” he said, but his favorite book is “Green Eggs and Ham.” But as for eating them?

“I do not like green eggs and ham,” he said. “I really don’t.”

When faced with the challenge of paying $200,000 to repair the Rialto chimney, Green told the board, “I sug-

gest we park this project at this point in time until we find a resource for it.”

Biedron said the chimney should work fine for the remainder of the winter. But he said as much as 12 feet of debris from a deteriorating metal flue had fallen down the chimney before it was cleared away.

Biedron’s comments seemed to strike a nerve with Board Member Cynthia Tyler, who said the chimney flue repair “has to be a priority when we do the budget in July. We have to find a funding source or we have to budget for it.”

Anthony proposes bill to combat heroin

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com SPRINGFIELD – A $25 million proposal sponsored by House Democratic Deputy Majority Leader Louis Lang, D-Skokie, and state Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, was proposed Monday in an effort to combat the state’s heroin crisis.

A news release issued by Anthony said expert testimony at heroin task force hearings showed the over-prescription of opioid painkillers has unleashed the heroin epidemic in Illinois.

Anthony noted the plan seeks to protect doctors from patients who are “pill shoppers” by increasing reporting

of opioid prescriptions.

“We need to arm doctors with more information and protect them against patients who are pill shoppers,” Anthony said in the news release.

The legislation would prohibit pharmacies from dispensing more than a 10-day supply of opioid drugs. Additional requirements would be set for doctors to determine addiction tendencies prior to prescribing painkillers and would require additional authorization when ordering more than a 10-day supply.

Lang said the legislation would allow doctors flexibility.

“A doctor may pre-authorize a larger supply if he or she describes on the prescription to

The proposed measure also would require coroners to report deaths due to drug overdoses to the Department of Public Health. Pharmacies would be designated as sites to take back unused prescriptions. The

measure also proposes making overdose antidotes available to the public.

It also would require the medical director of the Department of Public Health to write a standing order for the dispensation of antidotes, such as injectable naltrexone, by pharmacists who are willing, to people who may or may not be at risk for an opioid overdose, according to the news release.

Additionally, the bill would require injectable naltrexone to be covered in Illinois’ Medicaid medical assistance program for the treatment of alcohol dependence or the prevention of a relapse to opioid dependence, according to Lang.

City shuts down Joliet motel

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A new owner at the Days Inn, which was closed by the city last week, plans to renovate and reopen under a new brand, a Joliet official said Monday.

The motel at 1850 McDonough St. would reopen as Motel 6, which previously operated at the same location, said Dave Mackley, the city’s inspections director.

The motel was shut down Feb. 24 after a city business license hearing, Mackley said.

Motel management did not immediately return a call for comment Monday.

Days Inn had 127 rooms available for occupancy before the city began shutting down

rooms on Feb. 12.

On that day, Mackley said, the city inspected the motel because the business license was being transferred after a change of ownership. Problems were found in dozens of rooms during the inspection.

Electrical receptacles were loose or missing covers in some rooms, Mackley said.

Smoke detectors did not operate in some rooms. He described some rooms as dirty and having cigarette burns in the carpeting.

“The primary code violations were the electrical receptacles and smoke detectors,” he said.

The city shut down 82 rooms that day. But the motel was allowed to stay open.

24 city hearing for the business license, however, decided to shut down the motel because the license was not going to be transferred to the new owner until the repairs were made, Mackley said.

“There were 45 rooms that were leasable,” Mackley said.

“We really were not in favor of him renting those rooms while making the repairs [on the other 82 rooms].”

Mackley said he plans to meet with motel management next week to get an update on plans, including when the motel may reopen. But he was told the new owner plans extensive renovations.

“Their intention,” he said, “is to go to the Motel 6 franchise and redo the whole hotel.”

Opera House addition

The village board also approved a certificate of appropriateness for a two-story addition to the historic-designated Opera House, 24027 W. Lockport St., Plainfield, in a 4-1 vote. The addition would be host to a new restaurant and bar managed by the owner of Hopscotch and Vine, 24047 Lockport St., Plainfield.

While the whole board was in favor of the physical addition, Trustee Garrett Peck, the lone no-vote, said he was concerned about potentially shared parking with the Heritage Center across the street.

PLAINFIELD – Village trustees Monday approved an annexation agreement and final plat for a re-appropriated residential development that plans to construct a 42 single-family home subdivision within the Grande Park neighborhood.

The development, Somerset at Grande Park, originally called for 116 townhome units as the Cotswold Townhome Development in 2005 as part of the Grande Park master plan.

However, the townhomes failed to garner interest, causing developers K. Hovanian Homes to re-purpose the site.

“This puts Plainfield on the right track,” Trustee Bill Lamb said. “I appreciate the developer’s designs. They look very nice.”

The development was reviewed by the village board in August to re-purpose 92 of the townhomes into 49 single-family homes. However, trustees were concerned lot sizes were too small and the sideyard setbacks between homes weren’t large enough.

There also were concerns about the design of the homes.

Trustees liked K. Hovanian’s new plan that include larger setbacks, a reduced density of 3.6 units an acre, average lot sizes more than 8,000 square feet and a minimum of 7,120 square feet and a pattern book with designs that trust-

ees found acceptable.

The number of single family homes also were decreased from 49 to 42 and the designs conform to the village’s single-family home design standards set last year.

Trustee Margie Bonuchi also credited village staff for working with a recent string of residential projects that have changed before being built out.

“There’s different situations. Sometimes the houses aren’t at the same price point the original buyers had,” Bonuchi said. “The village has taken great strides in trying to work with developers.”

Joliet police: Officer shoots armed suspect

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Authorities said a Joliet officer shot a man who was reaching for a gun during a chase Monday.

Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said the incident began about 4:30 p.m. when a resident of the 100 block of Mississippi Avenue called police to report her wallet had been stolen.

“The victim called from her cellphone and said she was following the two suspects in her vehicle when they threatened to shoot her,” Benton said. “She provided descriptions and their location, and an officer encountered two men matching that description who were walking on Richards Street.”

The officer detained the two men and began to “pat search” them, Benton said.

“One of the suspects had the butt of a handgun pro-

truding from his pocket. The officer drew his Taser and ordered him to remain still, but the suspect ran,” Benton said.

The officer was unable to use his stun gun and chased after the man while ordering him to halt, according to Benton.

“When the suspect retrieved the handgun from his pocket, the officer fired multiple times,” Benton said.

The suspect, who was not identified, was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in critical condition.

He was undergoing surgery as of 9 p.m. Monday.

The other suspect fled the scene. Benton said a handgun was recovered during the investigation.

The police officer was treated for injuries that are not life-threatening. Benton said the officer will be placed on administrative leave per department policy while the shooting is investigated.

Evidence at issue in 2014 Evergreen Terrace slaying DNA tests could destroy evidence, attorneys say

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Prosecutors want to test DNA evidence they say further links a man to a brutal slaying last year at the Evergreen Terrace housing project.

But the public defender’s office said those tests will destroy that evidence and prohibit it from being examined by Drumaine S. their own experts.

lyn Woods, 20, in September 2014.

According to a court filing by Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Mark Fleszewski, the state police crime lab said “swabbings” from three items collected at the crime scene can be analyzed.

“The DNA testing procedure that will be used by the crime lab will consume the evidence recovered,” Fleszewski wrote.

Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes will decide whether the tests will be performed after a hearing scheduled for this month.

On Sept. 3, 2014, Woods was discovered in the laundry room at Evergreen Terrace, 363 N. Broadway, with multiple stab wounds to her chest, according to prosecu-

tors. McKinley allegedly had contacted Woods online and made arrangements to pay for a sexual encounter, according to statements made during previous court hearings.

Neither Woods nor McKinley resided at Evergreen Terrace.

Police said surveillance video led to identification of McKinley as a suspect. He reportedly was found hiding outside his house a few hours later and told officers he “didn’t mean to hurt her that bad.”

At the time of Woods’ slaying, McKinley was two months away from the end of his parole on a six-year sentence for unauthorized possession of a firearm following a 2009 arrest.

Children’s Advocacy Center seeking chefs

JOLIET – There still are a limited number of openings for guys who want to show off their cooking skills at the seventh annual “Men Who Cook” culinary competition benefiting the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center.

Guys interested in cooking are encouraged to sign up for one of the open spots available this year.

Cooks offer bite-sized samples of a home recipes in one of four categories: appetizer, side dish, entrée or dessert, according to a news release from the Will County State’s Attorney’s office.

Levi S. Castro, 29, was arrested Dec. 19 on one count of possessing child pornography. Andrew J. Castro, 27, was arrested at the same time on three counts of child pornography possession and one count of distributing child pornography.

Both brothers were each being held on $2 million bonds, but Judge Sarah Jones decided Monday that

computer with an Internet Protocol address that led them to the Castro home in the 500 block of Theodore Street. The two men were arrested after police executed a search warrant and seized computers and other electronics from inside the house.

Levi Castro reportedly told investigators he and his brother were addicted to child pornography and viewed it daily, but Levi said he had not downloaded or uploaded it. Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Sondra Denmark said Levi Castro kept a child’s car seat in his vehicle to

appear to be a father, even though he does not have children.

Both brothers allegedly conspired to kidnap a mother and young daughter in order to kill the woman and rape the girl, according to Denmark. Their plan had not targeted specific victims before their arrest, she said.

Distributing child pornography carries a prison sentence of six to 30 years.

Possession of child pornography carries a prison sentence of three to seven years.

Andrew and Levi Castro are next scheduled to appear in court April 17.

KATHRYN S. BEVEN

Reva M. Berard (nee Davis), age 79, late of Wedron, Illinois passed away at home Friday, February 27, 2015, at her home with her loving family by her side.

Reva was born in Williamson County, IL to Harrison and Elsie (nee Barwick) Davis. She married William Berard on May 26, 1956, in Plainfield, Illinois and together they shared 59 years of marriage.

Reva was a homemaker for many years, raising three children with William and had a large influence on their eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, cultivating in them a love of reading, cooking, thread arts, growing things amongst many other things. She will be long remembered for her quiet presence and her comfort food recipes.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, William Berard; her children, Steven and Angela Berard, Avia and Randy Spencer and Billy (late,Renee) Berard; her grandchildren, Paul Berard, Adam Landman, Matt Berard, Arin Landman, James Berard, Kyle Landman, Justin Berard, Jordan Berard, Nicole Berard, Elizabeth Berard and Sarah Berard; her great-grandchildren, Lucas Berard and Nolan Berard; her sisters, Lula Feltz, Alma Kelly of Creal Springs, Pearl (William) Kirman of Plainfield; her brother, Kenneth (Linda) Davis of Marion; sister-in-law of Lletta (Edward) Davis of Creal Springs, Shirley (Donald) Hoffman, Raymond (Norma) Berard and Edward (Shirley) Berard; aunt of nieces, nephews and other relative also survive.

Kathryn S. Beven, passed away February 27, 2015. Born in Joliet and graduated from Lockport Township High School. She worked at Standard Oil then on EJ&E Railroad, where she met Thomas Delaney Beven. They got married at her Lockport home.

After Kay’s beloved Delaney passed away, she moved back to Lockport where she cared for her mother until her death. She was a talented artist who loved to paint and animals. She especially loved her favorite dog named Ching. Kay was glamorous, gracious and generous to all that knew her.

Donald D. Bumpous, age 63, of Custer Park, IL, passed away suddenly Friday, February 27, 2015.

Born June 9, 1951, in Joliet, IL. Donnie formerly owned BH Construction and built many homes in the area. He was a member of the Teamsters Union, Local #179. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Surviving are his wife, Judy (nee Wren), whom he married March 6, 1971 in Custer Park; daughter,

‘Naty’ Revuelta, who had daughter with Fidel Castro, dies The Associated Press HAVANA – Natalia Revuelta Clews, the Cuban socialite who emptied her bank account and sold her diamond jewelry to support Fidel Castro when he was a little-known insurgent, has died. She was 89.

Revuelta, who first caught the eye of the young revolutionary in 1952, opened her home for Castro to plot a barracks assault the following year that is considered the start of the rev-

But Revuelta was restless.

Her husband worked long hours and she was tired of floating from one cocktail party to another, according to Wendy Gimble’s 1998 biography, “Havana Dreams.” She was also unfulfilled by motherhood.

Revuelta began attending meetings of the Orthodox Par-

ty, which opposed corruption in the government.

Castro first laid eyes on Revuelta at a protest marking the anniversary of the 1871 slaying of independence-minded medical students by Spanish soldiers.

Castro dispatched a mutual friend who introduced the pair. A few days later, the same friend approached Revuelta, wanting to know if Castro could drop by her house. “Of course,” she replied. “After five o’clock, I’m always home.”

Bills would change up state primary, campaign financing

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois electoral system would see changes under proposals in the state legislature, including ones on primaries and campaign finance.

The primary for state and federal elections would be pushed back to at least late June under two bills introduced by Democratic and Republican lawmakers, the State Journal-Register said. Recently elected Rep. Steven Andersson, R-Geneva, said lawmakers currently spend too much time campaigning.

Last year’s primary took place March 18.

“I took office a month and a half ago, and in nine months we’ll be circulating petitions once again for the next cycle,” Andersson said. “To me, that’s too much time campaigning and not enough time legislating.”

Andersson said other freshman representatives back his plan, which calls for a July primary.

Another proposed primary change from two lawmakers would eliminate a requirement to declare a party, which is public record, when voting. Reps.

Scott Drury and Mike Fortner both say the current system discourages people from voting in primaries.

“The reality is there’s no reason that anyone needs to know what party you’re affiliating yourself with every election other than to give politicians data so the next go-around they can try to contact you,” said Drury, a Democrat from Highwood.

Candidates still would be organized by party on the ballot in Drury’s primary proposal. But the bill from Fortner, a Republican from West Chicago, would move

PharmaCann to accept its 2nd pot growing permit

CHICAGO – An Oak Park company called PharmaCann took on a bigger role in Illinois’ medical marijuana industry Monday, confirming it would accept a cultivation center permit in an area where another group abandoned its plans.

Illinois Department of Agriculture spokeswoman Kristi Jones told The Associated Press Monday that PharmaCann was the next-highest scoring qualified applicant in District 1, which covers Carroll, Lee, Ogle and Whiteside counties.

PharmaCann has 15 days to

provide the required $200,000 license fee and a $2 million surety bond or escrow account.

The company said it will proceed with a growing operation in Hillcrest. This is the second cultivation permit for PharmaCann, which also plans a growing operation in Dwight.

Under four dispensary licenses, the company plans to sell marijuana in Ottawa, North Aurora, Schaumburg and Evanston.

Consumer debt, ID theft top consumer gripes in state

CHICAGO – Consumer debt issues and identity theft topped the list of complaints to the Illinois attorney general’s office in 2014.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan released the annual top

10 list of consumer complaints Monday. Other top complaints dealt with the telecommunications, construction, home improvement and car sales industries.

Madigan also unveiled a legislative initiative proposing to update and strengthen Illinois’ data breach notification law, the Personal Information Protection Act, which first was passed in 2005. Madigan said more needs to be done to protect sensitive information in light of massive data breaches last year.

Madigan’s office received nearly 21,800 complaints last year. Consumer debt was the top concern for the seventh year in a row. It included complaints related to mortgage lending, debt collection practices and payday loan companies.

CHARLESTON – Eastern Illinois University has named Bradley University Provost David Glassman as its new president.

The Charleston school said its Board of Trustees voted Monday to approve the selection of Glassman, who’s also vice president for academic affairs at Bradley, a private school in Peoria.

Board Chairman Kristopher Goetz noted Glassman’s experience with a private institution, saying the funding model for Eastern Illinois has been changing and it no longer can rely on state appropriations as its major funding source.

Glassman also has public university experience. Before going to Bradley in 2010, he was dean of the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville.

The 61-year-old Glassman will replace Eastern Illinois President William Perry, who plans to retire in June.

Scientists: State soil temperatures at or near normal

CHAMPAIGN – Scientists with the University of Illinois said soil temperatures across the state have been near normal on average so far this winter.

The Illinois State Water Survey at the university’s Prairie Research Institute said soil temperatures at 4 inches under sod averaged 38.6 degrees from Nov. 1 to Feb. 15. The water survey said that’s normal for the period. Temperatures at 8 inches averaged 38.4 degrees or about 1 degree below normal.

The coolest temperatures have been in the northern tier of Illinois. But scientists said the largest differences from long-term averages have been in southern and east-central Illinois. Temperatures there are 2 to 3 degrees below normal for the season.

Netanyahu assails Iran deal while touting U.S.-Israel ties

By JULIE PACE and ARON HELLER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Seeking to lower tensions, Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. officials cast their dispute over Iran as a family squabble on Monday, even as the Israeli leader claimed President Barack Obama did not – and could not – fully understand his nation’s vital security concerns.

“American leaders worry about the security of their country,” Netanyahu said as he opened a controversial trip to Washington. “Israeli leaders worry about the survival of their country.”

Netanyahu’s remarks to a friendly crowd at a pro-Israel lobby’s annual conference amounted to a warm-up act for his address Tuesday to Congress, an appearance orchestrated by Obama’s political opponents and aimed squarely at undermining the White House’s high-stakes bid for a nuclear deal with Iran.

Netanyahu tried to paper over his personal differences with Obama, insisting he was not in Washington to “disrespect” the president and saying any reports of the demise of U.S.-Israel ties were “not only premature, they’re just wrong.”

But he said he had a “moral obligation to speak up in the face of these dangers while there is still time to avert

Negotiators are working to reach a framework agreement before an end of March deadline. U.S. officials have reported progress toward a prospective agreement that would freeze Iran’s nuclear program for at least 10 years but allow the Iranians to slowly ramp up in later years.

Obama spoke dismissively of Netanyahu’s warnings about the risks of such a deal, saying the prime minister previously contended Iran would not abide by an interim agreement signed in 2013 and would get $50 billion in sanctions relief, a figure the U.S. says is far too high.

“None of that has come true,” Obama said in an interview with Reuters.

Obama views the prospect of a nuclear accord with Iran as a central component of his foreign policy legacy – as much as Netanyahu views blocking such a deal as a component of his own.

Netanyahu has been wary of Obama’s diplomatic pursuits with Iran from the start, fearing the U.S. will leave Tehran on the cusp of being able to build a bomb.

As the outlines of a deal have emerged and the deadline has drawn near, his criticism has become more forceful.

Caterpillar Chairman Doug Oberhelman’s opening remarks Feb. 20 about his company’s plans to build a new headquarters in downtown Peoria were greeted with sustained applause from political and business leaders, including Gov. Bruce Rauner.

Indeed, for those locals who are honest with themselves about where central Illinois’ economic bread is buttered, these were sweet words producing something of a hallelujah moment on another gray February morning

when they could have been forgiven for thinking things were not looking up.

Let’s face it – this community has lived long with the insecurity that Cat might look elsewhere for a home, even as the two-year study phase and the property purchases downtown seemed to be pointing in this direction.

After all, if Archer Daniels Midland in Decatur could pack up and hit the road ... .

Rauner gave voice to that: “Let’s be clear. They could have put their new headquarters anywhere in the world,” with no shortage of governors in this country mak-

ing a bid for them, as well.

“Caterpillar said, ‘No. We’re an American company.’”

Beyond that, “Caterpillar never came to me or the prior governors and asked for any special deal,” he said. “They didn’t ask for tax break or a rebate,” unlike some other major corporations that held Illinois taxpayers for ransom these past few years. “They just wanted to be treated with respect, and to know that Illinois is going to be fiscally responsible, and to be run right, the way Caterpillar’s run right.” That is to this proud Peoria company’s credit.

Here’s a deadline Rauner should have missed A rookie mistake has led to some big problems.

House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton both believed that Gov. Bruce Rauner would ask to postpone the scheduled Feb. 18 budget address.

The current fiscal year’s outlook was so incredibly dire (by the Democrats’ own making), that the veteran Democratic leaders figured Rauner would want first to tackle that problem before moving on to the mess in next fiscal year’s budget, which begins July 1.

Rauner declined, declaring that a deadline was a deadline.

He should’ve asked for a delay.

Rauner said in his budget address a deal on the current fiscal year’s problem was just “days away.” Madigan agreed with the governor’s prediction immediately after the speech.

But in reality, Rauner’s address undercut his negotiating stance so badly that Cullerton told Reuters two days later the negotiations had gone completely off the rails.

The problem is very real

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

First, Democratic legislators were open to giving the governor wide authority to move money around in this fiscal year’s budget to patch the gaping holes they themselves caused last year when they passed the monster after failing to come to terms with the reality of the expiring income tax hike.

But then Rauner revealed he wanted to do pretty much exactly the same thing in the coming year’s budget as this year’s, and the bitter pill of those cuts woke up legislators to some very harsh realities.

By now, you know the litany. Slashing municipal revenue sharing in half, eliminating a $165 million state heating-assistance program funded by utility ratepayers, cutting higher education’s funding by 31 percent, seriously chopping Medicaid reimbursements

to hospitals, pharmacies and nursing homes – not to mention the long list of cuts to relatively tiny social service programs added by individual legislators over the years.

Democrats reacted by saying they might be willing to allow Rauner to do some of that this fiscal year, but letting him do it again next fiscal year would be dangerously close to making those drastic cuts permanent.

Second, Rauner failed to even mention the possibility of new revenues during his address. By law, the governor cannot base a budget proposal on revenues that don’t yet exist under state statute. But there’s nothing in the statute books barring him from at least mentioning a few revenue options he could live with.

For example, Rauner said repeatedly during the campaign last year he wanted to eliminate corporate tax loopholes and put forward a modest plan to tax some services.

He also adeptly refused to rule out the prospect of raising the income tax back up a bit before

walking it down over four years.

Some still hope that the governor is open to those ideas and may not have mentioned them as part of an ongoing negotiating posture of forcing Democrats out of the weeds.

That may well turn out to be true, but Rauner planted himself so firmly on the far economic fringe with his budget address that he gave the distinct impression of policy immobility. Instead of coming off as a bipartisan leader, he looked like an intractable hardliner. His proposed sacrifices were completely one-sided – the poor and downstream governments bore pretty much the entire brunt. The rich and well-off were asked for nothing.

What we have are two seemingly diametrically opposed philosophies. On the one hand, Rauner wants permanently to cut sacred cow programs to start aligning state revenues with state expenditures. And he was silent on new revenues possibly as a way to force the Democrats to make the first

move on that front.

On the other hand, the Democrats see Rauner’s deep and drastic cuts as an irresponsible way to fund an unaffordable Jan. 1 income tax reduction that mainly benefits the welloff. And they want the governor to propose some revenue ideas before they’re willing to entertain any cuts to this fiscal year’s budget or next.

In other words, while Rauner’s budget was most definitely a punt to the General Assembly, the Democrats appear to have just punted the ball right back to the guy. Show us some revenue alternatives, they’re saying, and maybe we’ll talk.

But you go first.

So if the rookie governor had just put off that budget address by a couple weeks or so, he might have solved this fiscal year’s very real problems and survived to fight another battle over next fiscal year’s problems. Instead, we’re looking at possible gridlock.

Romeoville edges Lincoln-Way Central

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – When two young boys basketball teams meet in a preliminary game of a regional tournament, the winner draws a tough opponent but, more importantly, gets some valuable experience that should benefit it in the future.

Lincoln-Way Central and Romeoville met Monday for the chance to face Bolingbrook in Tuesday’s Class 4A Romeoville Regional semifinals, and their game went down to the wire.

While Lincoln-Way’s Knights put themselves in a position to win the game with a minute remaining, the Spartans made more big plays down the stretch to help them claim a 32-27 victory.

Both coaches saw moments of unpredictability that go along with having so much inexperience on the court, but neither side could fault their players’ efforts.

“Getting the win is the most important thing,” Spartans coach Marc Howard said. “This was our first win in a regional since I’ve been here, so I’m happy about that, but I’m not happy with how we played. I think we were 5 for 20 from the field in the first half and missed a lot of easy gimmes. We have to have those tomorrow if we want to be in the game.

“Losing Dwayne Griffin, a senior leader, really hurt, so now we’re very young since we had to bring up two or three more freshmen. When we first came out, it looked like we were ready, but then the energy level faded. But [Lincoln-Way Central] coach [Bob] Curran’s game plan was right on point. We wanted this opportunity to play ‘Brook, which is an excellent team, to see what it’s like.”

The Spartans (9-18) took a 22-20 lead into the final quarter, but the Knights (4-21) quickly tied the score on a layup by Brendan Flynn (four points) before London Stamps (12 points) countered with a jumper a short time later.

on Michalak (11 points) hit a free throw and then it moved in front by a point with 3:28 remaining when Michalak added two more charity tosses.

Stamps made a layup with 90 seconds left to give his team a 26-25 lead, but Micha-

lak countered with a jumper 21 seconds later to give the Knights their final lead at 2726.

Chuck Hunter (eight points) put the Spartans in front for good with 51 seconds left when he made a layup and Stamps

added four more free throws down the stretch, sealing the win with a pair of tosses with seven seconds remaining.

“The kids fought hard and kept the game at a tempo where we kind of felt we needed to have it to win the

game,” Knights coach Bob Curran said. “But we were kind of plagued by the same things that hurt us all year, some missed free throws and layups and some turnovers at crucial times. We’ve seen that all year, but we executed a little better.

“I told them at halftime that if we could have put ourselves in more of these situations throughout the year, maybe we could have handled it a little better. We started playing better down the stretch, so I started feeling better about things, but sometimes that happens with youth. Everybody’s coming back but one, and we have great kids.”

Romeoville, which led 1312 at halftime, got five points from DeAndre Heckard, four points from Malik Gaston and three points from Matt Cappelletti. Central also received five points from senior Luke Newtoff and three points from Jarret Gmazel and Mitch Kwasigroch.

When you look at regional pairings in boys high school basketball, the tendency is to assume the better seeds will win the regionals and the sectional will feature matchups you really want to see.

The tendency also is to overlook teams that are capable of scrambling things.

We have a few schools in our area this season that fall into that “potential spoiler” category. In the Class 4A Bolingbrook Sectional alone, there are several possibilities for surprises.

For example, when Lockport meets red-hot Providence at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Yorkville in a regional semifinal, the Porters will have the incentive that comes from knowing longtime coach Lawrence Thompson Jr. will be out after the season.

As for Providence, the Celtics have not played a game in 10 days. Granted, the three games they did play in a six-day span before that were special. They knocked off St. Rita, Hales Franciscan and St Joseph – three ranked teams – to win the Chicago Catholic League Tournament. Guard Troy Howat, the MVP of the tournament, has been exceptional of late.

Now, will all that momentum carry over, or will the Celtics be rusty against a firedup group of Porters? This, after all, is March Madness.

Also, assuming neither Plainfield North nor Plainfield East stumbles in the semifinals of the Lincoln-Way North Regional, the two Southwest Prairie rivals will meet for a third time in the regional final Friday night.

The teams split the first two games. North enters the postseason with a significantly better record than East, but the Bengals certainly are capable of playing with the Tigers. And Aaron Jordan and the Bengals may feel they have something to prove after not having the season they had wanted.

Then it’s off to Silver Cross Field, where the seventh-place game will be at noon, fifth place at 2:30 p.m., third place at 5 p.m. and the championship at 7:30 p.m.

Last year’s title game, you may recall, was a classic as Minooka beat JCA, 1-0, in 10 innings. Let’s hope the weather cooperates and we see a tournament full of games equally exciting this year. Baseball here always is a good watch.

Jackson scores 29 as JCA advances

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmediacom COAL CITY – If Joliet Catholic junior guard Jalen Jackson can lead the East Suburban Catholic in scoring and make the all-conference team, why couldn’t he drop 29 points on Sandwich?

Jackson, who averaged 20.1 points in ESCC wars, hit 9 of 15 shots, all 10 free throw attempts and scored 29 Monday night to lead the Hilltoppers to a 57-49 victory over Sandwich in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A Coal City Regional.

The win advances JCA (16-13) to Wednesday’s 6 p.m. semifinal against No. 1 seed Lincoln-Way West.

That was the scenario a year ago – West was the No. 1 seed – and the Hilltoppers won

to jump-start a run to the sectional finals. The Warriors, however, prevailed when the teams collided this season in the Romeoville Christmas Classic.

Sandwich (11-18), coached by former Seneca and Lewis standout Brennan Callahan, hit eight 3-pointers to stay close.

Sophomore guard Jackson Smith was especially troublesome, connecting on 6 of 12 from beyond the arc and finishing with 24 points.

“It was a little frustrating when that kid was hitting those 3s,” Jackson said. “We had to keep our head, not let their shooters get too hot.”

“In the second half, we got a little more ball pressure, and they started missing those 3s,” JCA coach Joe Gura said. “Then, after we got a lit-

tle bit of a lead, they hit a couple more.”

The Hilltoppers’ sixth man, sophomore Pete Ragen, was out with illness. And center Luke Mander played on a tender ankle. He had not been practicing, and Gura was not sure before the game how long he would be able to go.

Senior Kevin Matuszewski supplied good minutes off the bench; and sophomore Jack Surin, whose dad played for Gura at Lockport, played well when he got extended minutes in the second half. He hit a 3-pointer, scored five points and was solid defensively.

“He’s going to be a great player,” Jackson said of Surin.

“He gave us solid minutes. He was clutch. He knocked down shots.”

It was a back-and-forth game of runs early as Sand-

wich had a 10-0 run to lead, 10-3, and JCA led, 12-10, after a 9-0 run.

But Sandwich went up, 1812, because of to an 8-0 run before the Hilltoppers got back and tied it at 23 at the half on Matuszewski’s layup off a feed from Jackson.

The score was tied at 32 in the third quarter before the Hilltoppers’ 8-0 run – which included four Jackson free throws, a Surin basket and a Mander layup – resulted in a 40-32 lead the Hilltoppers did not relinquish.

“We had to go small in the second half,” Gura said. “That meant Surin in the game. We couldn’t have Mander guard a wing with his ankle. Surin played well offensively and defensively. We don’t just have a junior class – we have sophomores, too.”

Harold Davis, an All-ESCC honorable-mention selection, finished with 10 points for JCA. Drake Fellows had eight rebounds and Mander six.

“For Jalen [Jackson] to lead our conference, one of the best defensive conferences in the state, in scoring and Harold [Davis] to be honorable mention, those are very good kudos,” Gura said.

By quarter, Jackson scored eight, five, eight and eight points. For him to flirt with 30 and hit only one 3-pointer is not the norm, however. Instead, he took the ball to the basket and finished consistently.

“You have to take what the defense gives you,” Jackson said. “I try to take the shots I’m given, and my jump shot wasn’t falling.”

JOLIET – University of St. Francis Director of Athletics Dave Laketa said there was one reason he talked to Gordie Gillespie about returning to USF for the 2006 season to begin a second stint as the Saints’ baseball coach.

Those who guessed he wanted the school to win as many games as possible would be missing of the essence of Gordie.

“I wanted to bring him back so our student-athletes could experience what all those others had through the years,” Laketa said. “It was not about winning more games. It was to give those young men the opportunity to learn from him about becoming leaders, fathers and good community people.”

Gillespie died Saturday night at age 88. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m.

Thursday at New Covenant Church on Mills Road. Rest assured, hundreds of Gordie stories will be shared.

All Gillespie did in 59 years of coaching at Lewis, Joliet Catholic and St. Francis was win 2,402 games in baseball, basketball and football. He coached in 110 sports seasons at high levels, a record that likely never will be touched.

And yet, whenever Gillespie is discussed, everyone gets back to the thought that it is not about wins and losses. He had a remarkable record, but what mattered most were the relationships he built.

“That’s the most important thing,” said Pat Sullivan, who played at Lewis for Gillespie and later worked hand-inhand with him in the athletic department at St. Francis. “His records will never be touched. They’re incredible.

Yet the most important thing is that none of that matters. His impact on people far exceeds all of that.”

“I’ll run into people who played football for Gordie 20 years ago,” said Tom Kennedy, who played basketball and baseball for Gillespie at Lewis in the late 1950s and early 1960s and retired from Regis College in Denver after a long career in administration there.

“I’ll tell them I played for Gordie, too, and they have that smile. It’s that bond that people just have when they have played for him. He is the most fascinating person I ever met.”

Talking with Gillespie has been described as a mirror-like experience.

Sullivan said if you tried to talk to him about his coaching successes, he invariably reflected the conversation right back to you. He was that humble of a person.

The handwritten thank-you and congratulatory notes that have marked Sullivan’s illustrious career also were a Gillespie staple.

“Just for me to be able to say I knew Gordie, I feel that I am the luckiest man in the world,” said Saint Xavier football coach Mike Feminis,

“In our 25 years together, we had thousands of conversations.

He had good penmanship, too.

“My daughters are used to seeing my scratching,” Feminis said. “They were looking at some of Gordie’s letters with me, and they commented on the nice handwriting he had.”

Feminis feels he owes everything to Gillespie; and Dan Sharp, Joliet Catholic’s football coach and athletic director, expressed the same sentiments. He, like Feminis, is a former assistant on Gillespie’s staff at USF. “Gordie is the only reason I am doing what I am doing,” Sharp said.

“He inspired me in this profession and in life.”

Gillespie’s final coaching act, after he had retired from USF baseball the second and last time after the 2011 season, was to provide assistance to Sharp in the JCA football program.

Whenever possible, he was on the sidelines offering his expertise.

Through the years, Sharp occasionally was referred to as “a little Gordie” or “another Gordie.” His feelings?

“It was an unbelievable compliment,” he said. “I shrugged it off, but just to be mentioned in the same sentence with him meant everything.”

What Bears may be looking for in market The National Football League’s annual game of tag ended abruptly at 3 p.m.

Monday. Now the Bears can complete their 2015 shopping list and rush off to the market.

Justin Houston, Demaryius Thomas, Dez Bryant, Jason Pierre-Paul, Stephen Gostkowski and Charles Clay will be staying in Kansas City, Denver, Dallas, New York, New England and Miami, respectively, as the only players to receive franchise or transition tags this season.

The biggest impact of those decisions is almost every team now is considering offers for Ndamukong Suh and Devin McCourty, and it would be a real shame if the Bears weren’t in on both.

The Lions want Suh back and will be in there swinging with everyone else; but if Suh has any loyalty to the Motor City, he certainly hasn’t voiced it.

The San Francisco 49ers’ recent four years of dominance on defense with Vic Fangio was made possible by the presence of Justin Smith.

Suh is that kind of player, and they don’t come along often. The Lions desperately want to keep him; but with 18 veteran unrestricted free agents of their own to consider, they just couldn’t afford the $26 million cap hit it would take this year to franchise him.

Like Smith, he is neither a prototypical zero or five technique, but he is powerful and athletic enough to excel at either, as well as slipping back into tackle in a 40 front in what

He is going to command more than $100 million, with as much as $60 million guaranteed, and he’s worth it. Suh hasn’t missed a game since his second year in the league, in which he played 14 games, and at 28 he should be in his prime for at least the first four or five years of this next contract.

With about $26 million of cap space before they start moving money around, the Bears could get Suh done, if they can outsell the other 31 teams in the league.

His presence could take a year or two off the time it will take to rebuild the Bears’ defense.

McCourty is arguably the best coverage safety in the league and would fill another huge need for the Bears. The problem here is that it seems every team in the league needs help at the position, and McCourty is almost certainly going to end up the highest-paid defensive back in the NFL. The Patriots couldn’t franchise him, because Darrelle Revis is also free, unless New England exercises a $20 million option to keep him. That and a tag on McCourty would have fractured the Pats’ cap.

He would look great in navy and orange, but only if Suh doesn’t.

Tier Two of this group for

the Bears starts with Randall Cobb, Mark Ingram and Rahim Moore; and if Ryan Pace agrees, he has the room to get all three done absent a Suh or McCourty signing.

Cobb is a Pro Bowler in his own right and the perfect complement to Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery, if they’re both here, or ideal replacement for Marshall if he’s gone.

Ingram can be Mr. Inside to Matt Forte’s Mr. Outside and can take over as the franchise back when Forte is done.

Moore is a top-flight starting safety that John Fox is familiar with and a big upgrade over anyone the Bears have at the position right now.

What makes this trio so attractive – in addition to their skills – is all three will be just 25 years old this season.

And Ingram, whom Ryan Pace helped acquire in New Orleans, has almost all of the original tread on his tires with just 582 carries in four NFL seasons.

Three other great plug-andplays for the Bears are Mike Iupati at guard – if the Bears move Kyle Long to tackle; DT/ DE Terrance Knighton, who is someone Fox also knows very well and offers similar versatility to Suh; and Seattle cornerback Byron Maxwell.

It also is worth noting every one of these guys but Ingram and Iupati was a playoff performer this past season.

WHAT TO WATCH NBA: Washington at Bulls, 7 p.m., CSN The banged up Bulls will have to get by without another key player, with All-Star guard Jimmy Butler joining former MVP Derrick Rose on the sideline.

The Bulls announced Monday that Butler will miss three to six weeks because of a sprained ligament in his left elbow, the latest blow for a team that has rarely been at full strength this season.

“I guess when it rains, it pours,” veteran Kirk Hinrich said. “We can’t sit around and feel sorry for ourselves.

Nobody else is going to. We’ve got to find a way.”

Reducing pain, restoring movement Joliet orthopedic surgeon 2nd in Illinois for number of cartilage implants

dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – When former Joliet resident Rachel Stoddard was 11 year old, she had a skiing accident that led to knee pain and inflammation whenever she was active, such as in gym class.

“The problem went undiagnosed for several years until we saw Dr. [Mukund ] Komanduri,” the now 23-year-old Warrenville resident said.

“We even saw another doctor, who said, ‘Oh, she’s just got some scar tissue.’ ” Possibly, but Stoddard also had torn cartilage, which Komanduri repaired with a cartilage implant when Stoddard was 19. Stoddard later had a another implant for a second, unrelated accident, which also went well, she said.

Today, Stoddard engages in aerobics. She enjoys bicycling and horseback riding, activities she avoided before the cartilage implant work.

“I think it’s great for anyone wanting to continue leading an active life,” Stoddard said of the procedure.

Vericel Corp., which develops cellular therapies, according to its website at vcel.com, recently recognized Komanduri, chief of staff at MK Orthopaedics Surgery & Rehabilitation, for having performed the second-most Carticel cartilage implant procedures – 75 – in Illinois since the procedure became available in 1997.

Cartilage implants are not commonly done, Komanduri said, because patients must meet stringent qualifications. They must be under age 55, have a body mass index lower than 35 and have self-contained injuries less than a half-dollar in size.

In addition, issues such as joint instability, alignment issues or tears in the meniscus must be addressed before a cartilage implant can be considered, Komanduri said. Some insurance companies won’t pay for them.

Even when they do, many patients can’t afford to be off their feet for six weeks, much less out of work, during the recovery time, Komanduri said.

“The sad part is, if the procedure were a lot easier, a lot more people would go for it,” Komanduri said.

After conducting a comprehensive history, Komanduri will check for tenderness over the bone, he said. Then, he will order an MRI with specialized mapping software for cartilage.

“A lot of scans give blurry images and are not very helpful,” Komanduri said.

Next, Komanduri performs an arthroscopy to assess the damage.

He also will take a biopsy, which is put into a solution and transported overnight to a facility, where it will be frozen, stabilized and grown, he said. Growth time is about four weeks, when it works.

“There is a percentage of biopsies that just don’t grow,” Komanduri said.

“Either the patient’s cartilage was poor quality, the biopsy was inadequate in size or the chemicals didn’t work the way they were supposed to.”

When the cartilage is ready, surgery is scheduled. Any remaining cartilage is trimmed away and a layer of artificial collagen – think “tire patch,” Komanduri said – is sewn over the bone. The new cartilage cells then are injected.

Physical therapy begins six to 24 hours later with the use of a continuous-passive-motion machine, Komanduri said. Some patients may require additional therapy, but adhering to the “no weight-bearing” maxim for six weeks is imperative, Komanduri added.

“You need time for the cells to stick together,” Komanduri said.

After the implant some patients – Stoddard was one – return for “debridement.” Sometimes, cartilage grows too quickly and the large fronds become pinched in the joints, Komanduri said.

Komanduri said outcomes are good. Ninety-five percent of patients at five years, 75 percent at 10 years and

65 percent at 15 years are still doing well. However, cessation of pain and return to mobility may happen slowly – as Corvin Tate, 31, of Shorewood well knows.

About 2010, Tate was restoring a ’72 Cutlass in his garage when he fell, fracturing his knee cap and tearing his meniscus, patella and two ligaments, Tate said. After completing physical therapy, Tate still had pain and trouble moving his leg forward, so he consulted with Komanduri and had surgery to repair the meniscus, which restored partial movement, Tate said.

A month later, Komanduri disassembled the cartilage and regrew it. A month after that, Komanduri implanted the cells into Tate’s knee.

Within two years, Tate once again was jogging and playing softball.

“Everything feels good now,” Tate said. “I was very happy with the surgery.”

Tate can’t say the same about the Cutlass. He sold it.

“I didn’t get back to it quickly enough and it was taking up space in the garage, with parts everywhere,” Tate said.

HEALTH BRIEFS Hickory Creek sixth-graders make ‘Sweet Connections’

FRANKFORT – Sixth-grade students at Hickory Creek Middle School in Frankfort made Valentine’s Day special for the residents of Frankfort Terrace Nursing Center with a gift of valentine goodie bags.

The program, “Sweet Connections,” is a community outreach program for the elderly.

Leading up to Valentine’s Day, the students participate in a “Sweet Connections” advisory project, discussing health issues that seniors encounter later in life and creating goodie bags for the residents.

Parents and school staff donated items to fill the goodie bags. The students also made stationery kits with handmade cards, and constructed and decorate candy boxes.

Coordinated by teacher Renee Grady with participation by the sixth-grade teachers and students, the annual project supports the District 157-C Character Counts character education program.

cells may be collected from your blood, before the main radiation or chemotherapy begins.

The cells are treated to remove any cancer cells, and then stored until the transplant. In your case, the healthy blood stem cells will come from another person (a donor).

The donor’s cells must be a good “match” for you – this means certain markers on their cells and your cells are as similar as possible. This reduces the risk that the cells will be rejected by your body.

Bone marrow transplants are usually used to treat leukemia, lymphomas, Hodgkin’s disease and multiple myeloma, because these cancers affect the bone marrow directly. The procedure is also used for some noncancerous conditions, such as sickle cell anemia.

You will stay in the hospital for several weeks after the transplant. Until your bone marrow cells multiply to a certain level, you will be at increased risk of infection. Other serious risks include severe bleeding, liver problems and increased risk of developing another cancer.

Another possible problem is that cells from a donor might not match your cells well enough and the new donor cells will begin attacking the cells of your body.

This is called graftversus-host disease. You will take medications to reduce the risk of this happening. Despite the dangers, bone marrow transplantation is usually successful.

Dear Doctor K: I have leukemia. Thankfully, a family member was a bone marrow match. Can you tell me what to expect during my bone marrow transplant procedure?

Dear Reader: A bone marrow transplant can be a life-saving treatment. To understand how it works, you need to understand how blood cells are created. And what leukemia is.

Your blood contains red and white blood cells.

There are several types of white blood cells, which are a key part of your immune system. All your blood cells are made by blood stem cells, which live primarily in the spongy center of your big bones.

In the years before you got leukemia, each of your blood cells was programmed to live for a while, and then to die – only to be replaced by new, young cells.

When you developed leukemia, genetic changes in some white blood cells suddenly kept them from dying. As a result, the number of that type of white blood cell kept growing. An ideal treatment would kill just the cancerous white blood cells, and allow noncancerous new cells to replace them. The ideal treatment has not been discovered. Bone marrow transplant, while less than ideal, is such an important advance that it was honored with the Nobel Prize.

In a bone marrow transplant, all of your white blood cells – healthy and cancerous – are killed by drugs, radiation or both. Then healthy blood stem cells are infused into your blood. Those cells find their way to your bone marrow, and start to make healthy new red and white blood cells. The new cells will multiply.

Dear Abby: I teach at a fairly small school. My grade-level teaching team consists of five teachers who work closely together.

During the last school year, one of my team members got engaged.

This year, we’ve had a change of staff and now have a new member on our team.

My colleague has not, and does not, plan to invite this new member to her wedding, although the rest of us are invited. The save-the-dates and shower invitations have all been hand-delivered at school, making it awkward for the person who has not been invited.

I feel it wasn’t appropriate to include all but one of the team simply because she is new to the group.

Cross-examination of witnesses will be permitted only during that period immediately following each witness' testimony. The Village shall be deemed a participant and a party to all proceedings and shall proceed last with its case and cross-examination. Should the public hearing extend beyond one day, any person, not of record as of the first day of the public hearing, shall not be allowed to present testimony or cross examine, except as authorized by the Hearing Officer for cause shown, consistent with fundamental fairness. Failure to file said notice of intent or to register in person with the Hearing Officer shall not prevent any person from commenting orally at the conclusion of evidence, subject to the Hearing Officer's discretion.”
