In February, city officials announced Asiago city officials approved of being sister cities with Lockport. All that’s left is to fill out paperwork with Sister Cities International.

Lockport Mayor Steven Streit said city officials were excited to become sister cities with Asiago. The prospects for cultural exchange, student exchange programs and business is exciting, he said.

“Just having people from Asiago coming to Lockport and visit will strengthen that connection,” he said.

According to Sister Cities International, sister cities are formed when the highest

elected officials from two communities sign a memorandum establishing a sister city partnership. Thousands of inbound, outbound and virtual exchanges take place each year, according to their site.

“There’s a lot of things we could share culturally in addition to student exchanges,” Pastore said.

Coincidentally, Lockport is a lot like Asiago, she said. The weather is similar because the city is not close to the Mediterranean Sea. Although the weather was a bit warmer Thursday at roughly 46 degrees, she said.

“It was like you had been their next door neighbor forever,” she said about the people of Asiago. “It was a wonderful feeling.”

Not literally, though. Pastore, a Lockport resident who retired from a Naperville engineering company, was having lunch with relatives in Asiago, Italy.

She noticed many familiar names from Lockport in Asiago, such as Caneva. Many residents from Lockport have family ties to Asiago, she said.

That’s when one idea to bridge the two cities occurred to her.

“Gee, wouldn’t it be great if we became sister cities?” she said.

A sister city is a long-term, cooperative relationship between two cities in different countries, according to Sister Cities International, a nonprofit membership organization for sister cities, counties and states. Through the relationship, the cities can have cultural, educational, business and technical exchanges, according to the website.

JOLIET – Police say a man refused to come out of his house after firing off a shotgun Sunday morning.

Chief Brian Benton said at about 4:30 a.m. officers were sent to the 200 block of South Hammes Avenue after shots were reported.

“We learned a man who was possibly despondent had fired a shotgun outside and then gone back into his resi-

dence,” Benton said.

Police surrounded the house and tried to make contact with the man inside but received no response from him. A SWAT team went in about 8:30 a.m., Benton said.

“He was taken into custody without incident and was brought to the hospital for a mental evaluation,” Benton said.

Charges will be pending after the case is reviewed with the Will County State’s Attorney’s office, Benton

said.

The incident follows one in Lockport early Thursday morning in which a man fired a gun outside of his home into three neighboring houses.

The Lockport man, Patrick McGinnis, 41, was taken to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation after a five-hour standoff with police. He was later arrested on charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm, reckless discharge of a firearm, vandalism and domestic battery.

Military Mama Network supplies the troops

JOLIET – It’s not ammunition in the caissons that Geriann Wiesbrook sends rolling along.

Her boxes typically have deodorant, shampoo, snacks, magazines and baby wipes.

Sometimes there are special requests like a six-pack of root beer or a bag of spicy Cheetos.

But only one item is “standard issue” – a handwritten letter of support for the soldier receiving the care package.

“Whatever’s in the box, we hear more from the soldiers about that [letter] than anything else and how they appreciate it,” Wiesbrook said.

“That’s what kills me – that they do feel forgotten.”

Since June, Wiesbrook has led the Military Mama Network – volunteers who have sent cards, basic supplies and “a little bit of love” to military personnel who are injured, deployed in combat zones, are in remote areas or are in training. More than 700 soldiers have received packages so far.

Geriann’s first care package went to her brother during Operation Desert Storm and included a cassette made with her daughter’s toy tape recorder.

“It was the first time we weren’t together for the holidays. I couldn’t bear the thought of him eating Thanksgiving out of a can,” she said.

More than 20 years later, Geriann sent boxes for her son, Joseph Wiesbrook, when he joined the National Guard before transferring into West Point.

“But when he graduated basic training, I was like, now what do I do?” she recalled.

Wiesbrook learned from an online organization that many deployed soldiers were in areas without running water where baby wipes, which aren’t issued, were about the only bathing option.

For her birthday party last year, Wiesbrook asked her guests to bring supplies

Weisbrook started the group about a year ago after being inspired while sending packages to her son while he was in basic training. instead of gifts. She ended up with enough to make 50 boxes.

Through Facebook, the Military Mama Network has received requests from soldiers and supporters. Besides financial donations, “complete strangers have dropped off supplies at my house,” Wiesbrook said.

“Mamas,” which welcomes everyone interested, including men, has started assembling packages across the country for soldiers deployed in the Middle East and South Korea.

“It’s now become an international effort because a [network volunteer] became friends with a Canadian who knew soldiers deployed with coalition forces,” Wiesbrook said.

Three military hospital units also receive cards regularly from the network, and the moms send flowers

to those whose children have been killed in action.

A “night owl,” Wiesbrook typically packs her 12-inch by 12-inch boxes when most people are sleeping. The assembly of 10 to 15 boxes takes several hours each time.

“You’d be amazed what you can fit in a box. I’ve developed ‘ninja packing skills’ and can get about two Walmart shopping bags in one,” she beamed.

Wiesbrook usually strips things from their individual packaging to maximize the available product space in the mailing box. Her recent challenges included fitting as many Girl Scout cookies as she could in a box for one soldier and a small coffeemaker in another.

“Good razors and deodorant can never be sent enough,” she tells groups and individuals who want to

donate products. Feminine hygiene products are greatly appreciated by deployed women who can’t run out to a corner store.

While most packages contain essentials, one mom told Wiesbrook her son would be celebrating his 21st birthday on the frontlines. He was sent a “party in a box” with sweets, balloons and decks of playing cards.

The network has included play-by-play descriptions and pictures from football games for a sports fan, Wiesbrook said.

Wiesbrook uses candies and cough drops as packing material to fill spaces. Each box is filled with about $35 worth of items and costs $15 to ship.

“I eventually figured out how to have the post office pick up the boxes,” she said.

“I didn’t know they would and

spent hours at the post office when I first started doing this.”

While some things have been streamlined, Wiesbrook still wants a commitment from network members to reach out with a personal connection.

“I want someone who’s lonely ... who is sacrificing for us ... to see someone has taken the time to handwrite something for them, to see that they matter,” she said.

Wiesbrook plans to continue supporting the military whether those who receive the packages remain strangers or not.

“I haven’t met one yet, though I’ve talked to a few online,” she said.

Forest preserve wraps up culling season

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com The recent discovery of a white-tailed deer infected with chronic wasting disease brought new urgency to deer culling at seven Forest Preserve District of Will County sites.

The district initially planned the removal of 206 deer – primarily does and males without antlers – for its 2013-14 fall-winter season, according to Executive Director Marcella DeMauro.

Another 20 deer from Kankakee Sands Preserve near Braidwood were added to the quota after the disease was discovered in a deer shot there Dec. 19, DeMauro said.

Chronic wasting disease is an always-fatal degenerative neural disease that afflicts deer and elk.

“This is the first instance in Will County as far as we know,” said Glen Buckner, the district’s wildlife ecologist.

“It’s similar to mad cow disease.”

The disease first was discovered in white-tailed deer in north central Illinois in 2002, according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The disease generally spreads from deer to deer but also can be present in the soil from deer carcasses in the wild.

“It can be taken up by plants and passed on to other deer,” Buckner said. “It’s a pretty per-

vasive disease.”

Unlike mad cow disease, however, there’s no evidence that humans are susceptible to the disease. Still, the state isn’t taking any chances.

“IDNR takes a very aggressive approach to managing the spread of chronic wasting disease,” DeMauro said.

IDNR policy to slow transmission of the disease has been to cull areas where infected animals are discovered, the same practice used by the district to manage the burgeoning herds in its preserves.

Local deer population density estimates range from 33 deer per square mile at Lockport Nature Preserve to a staggering 111 animals per square mile at McKinley Woods Preserve in Channahon, according to Buckner.

The district would like to see the herds eventually reduced to about 20 to 30 deer per square mile.

Yet, despite three seasons of culling, deer populations remain so large at five of the preserves – McKinley Woods, Kankakee Sands, Goodenow Grove and Hickory Creek – that additional deer removal will be necessary for years to come, DeMauro said.

While the district depends primarily on aerial surveys for its deer count, the growing number of sightings from nearby residents also provides some sense of how pervasive the herds are, DeMauro said.

“If people are seeing deer

that frequently, that’s not normal,” DeMauro said.

Part of the problem is that because of residential and commercial development, there’s really nowhere else for the deer to go.

“They’re pretty much restricted to the preserves and the cornfields,” Buckner said.

“You have a high population and not much habitat for them.”

Large populations can cause a lot of grazing damage to trees and shrubs in the preserves, as well as to crops in adjacent farmlands.

Deer will feed selectively on their favorite foods and then move on to their next and so on, DeMauro said. Favorite flora include native lilies, or-

chids, native woody plants and shrubs and young oak trees.

“Deer pretty much do nothing but eat,” Buckner said. “If you drive along a forest preserve, especially in Cook County, there’s a very clear line you can see where all the trees and shrubs have been eaten up to 5 or 6 feet. That’s the browse line.”

In addition to the plant damage, over-browsing can destroy habitat for other birds and animals.

The district has used sharpshooters to control deer populations since 2010.

This year’s regular culling season ended Feb. 23, Buckner said. The secondary culling at Kankakee Sands was expected to be completed last week.

“They identified Walker from several prior arrests,” Dupuis said. “They came out and he was standing in front of Little Caesar’s down the block.”

Walker was arrested after a foot chase on charges of burglary and obstructing justice. He complained of asthma problems at the station and was taken to a hospital where he spit on and struggled with a police officer, injuring the officer’s hand, Dupuis said.

After being discharged from the hospital, Walker also was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer and

booked into the Will County jail.

The Forest Preserve District of Will County culls deer in seven areas from December through March as part of its population management program.

Man arrested on child pornography charges JOLIET - A 54-year-old man was arrested on child pornography charges Thursday.

Police Chief Brian Benton said the Will County State’s Attorney’s High-Tech Crimes Task Force traced an internet address used to transmit child

pornography to Kohlman C. Cowger of the 3400 block of Karen Drive.

Benton said officers used a search warrant to enter Cowger’s residence around 2:30 p.m. and seized computers and electronic equipment. Cowger was arrested on four counts of possessing child pornography and one count of aggravated dissemination of child pornography.

‘Drop It and Drive’: It’s the law VIEWS Kris Stadalsky Channahon Chief of Police Jeff Wold and the Channahon Police department are standing behind the statewide “Drop It and Drive” campaign which educates drivers about the dangers of hand-held cellphone use.

A statewide law took effect Jan. 1 prohibiting the use of hand-held electronics while driving.

I’m pretty sure not everyone has gotten the message because I frequently see drivers with phones held to their ears, talking away.

I’ve had my share of near misses with distracted drivers.

Seems some people must think using a cellphone while navigating a parking lot is OK because it’s not on the street.

Just two weeks after I purchased my newest vehicle in October 2010, I was hit by a woman who was talking on her cellphone while I was driving on Route 126. The woman was making a left turn out of a subdivision. A pick-up truck was making a right turn into it, and as it moved into the turn lane I went straight. The other driver pulled out and smashed into my new mini SUV on the passenger side quarter panel.

She claimed, to the police, that I had sped up so it was my fault. She did admit to being on her cellphone. The thing is, many things were happening at once. The road was busy in both directions late in the day, one person was turning in, one was going straight and the third was trying to make a left turn onto a busy road. Even without a distraction it was a nerve-wracking situation.

While that taught me a lesson, I still found myself occasionally checking my own phone when the e-mail or text message alert sounded. It’s so easy to think you can take your eyes off the road for a quick second.

In Illinois in 2012, cellphone distractions were the cause

of over 1,200 vehicle crashes.

About 100 deaths are caused by distracted driving each year.

More than 3,300 people died in 2012 in distracted-driving-related crashes, which is about 10 percent of all traffic deaths nationwide. Another study estimated 421,000 people were injured.

“Statistics confirm that using a hand-held cellphone while driving is deadly and dangerous,” said Wold. “In my experience, drivers talking, texting or surfing the Web on their hand-held cellphones create a threat to themselves, pedestrians and to fellow motorists.”

I am frequently on the road between interviews, appointments and jobs. My cellphone is my lifeline to my editors and contacts. But I’ve made a pact with myself not to use my cellphone without my wireless, hands-free ear piece. Besides that it’s now illegal in many states, I personally know it’s dangerous.

I asked myself how hard is it to pull off into a parking lot if I really need to check a text message or e-mail alert.

Besides, it’s a good way of making myself slow down when I’m running from one place to another.

As chief of police and a concerned motorist, Wold said he agreed with the government, transportation industry, business and community leaders who are encouraging Illinois drivers to Drop It and Drive.

The Drop It and Drive program provides youth workshops, programs for elementary age students and talks with high school students, as well as corporate risk management workshops to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving through a solution-focused and reality-based approach. It was just your purpose,’ ” Mary Fran said, “ ‘so why talk about it?’ ” Meta’s parents were South Dakota homesteaders, which meant Meta attended a one-room school and lived on a remote farm until she moved to Joliet at age 18 to work in her uncle’s medical office and baby-sit his children.

Stories Meta told her children included keeping food “refrigerated” in a nearby creek, the challenges of cleaning a three-story farm during the Dust Bowl and how the grasshoppers stripped the wood from the fence posts and derailed the trains with their “grease.”

Girlhood practical jokes included dragging a cow up the schoolhouse stairs for April Fool’s Day and eating wild onions so the stench would force the teacher to dismiss classes early.

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com Two men were arrested last week in similar but unrelated domestic cases involving unlawful restraint in Plainfield and Joliet.

At 5:49 a.m. Wednesday, Jacob R. Gajcak, 21, refused to leave his former girlfriend’s house in the 15700 block of South Cove Circle, according to Plainfield Sgt. Mike Fisher.

“He punched holes in the drywall, and, when her mother tried to call 911, he took her cellphone, pushed both of them into the bathroom and held the door closed,” Fisher said.

The women were eventually able to get out of the room and call 911. Officers arrived to hear screaming from inside the residence, Fisher said.

Gajcak, of the 700 block of Dover Way in Shorewood, was arrested on charges of unlawful restraint, assault, interfering with reporting domestic violence and vandalism. Jail records indicate he also is facing marijuana delivery charges from 2012.

Shorewood police said Gajcak was arrested for rob-

bery and aggravated battery following a “drug deal gone bad” in May 2011.

On Wednesday night, Kenneth G. Edwards, 21, invited his former girlfriend to his residence in the 900 block of McKinley Street, Joliet Lt. Brian Dupuis said. Despite having an order of protection against Edwards, the 21-year-old woman went over to discuss the report from the Department of Children and Family Services blocking Edwards from seeing their son.

“When she attempted to leave, he grabbed her hair and arm and slammed her head into the wall,” Dupuis said. Edwards allegedly kept the woman inside but allowed her to use the bathroom, where she had hidden a cellphone beforehand, Dupuis said.

“She texted her mom to call the cops and he grabbed her. No one answered the door when officers arrived, so they made entry inside out of concern for her safety,” Dupuis said.

Edwards was arrested on charges of domestic battery, interfering with reporting domestic violence, unlawful restraint and violating an order of protection.

LOCAL BRIEF State provides money for bicycle path BOLINGBROOK – Gov. Pat Quinn last week announced a $151,000 grant to help develop a bicycle path in Bolingbrook.

The matching grant is part of a $1 million plan to develop or improve 42 miles of bicycle trails in Illinois.

The Will County Forest Preserve District will receive $151,000 to develop two sections of trail extending north and south from the existing loop trail at Whalon Lake Forest Preserve off Royce Road in Bolingbrook.

These trails will connect the Bolingbrook Bridge and trails south of the DuPage River to the Naperville and DuPage County trails north of the river.

Funds for the Bicycle Path Grant Program, administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (DNR), are for the acquisition of land or development of facilities for bicycle paths.

A total of 21 grant applications were initially received, representing a combined request of $2.7 million.

Generous, independent, selfless, patient and strong: These traits Meta Semitekol of Joliet embodied, not in words, but in actions, according to Meta’s daughters, Barbara Semitekol, of Chicago, and Mary Fran Dempsey, of Joliet.

Meta helped found the gift shop and the candy striper program at what is now Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet. She led the Jolly-ettes 4-H club. She put her husband, John A. Semitekol, and her brother, John Hamilton, through college.

A first-prize Illinois State Fair winner for sewing, Meta shared her seamstress knowledge with students in her home beginning in 1971 and continuing until two years before her death Jan. 29 at the age of 95.

She canned and baked homemade bread. She arranged flowers. She sewed her children’s and grandchildren’s clothes, with the sewing machine whirring until 4 a.m., Mary Fran said. She knitted, did crewel, needlepoint and cross-stitch. She made hats. She quilted “the old-fashioned way,” Barbara said, with a large frame and hand-sewn squares.

Meta “sneaked behind our backs,” Barbara said, to study the clothes at Al Baskin’s in downtown Joliet and then sewed look-alikes.

Only the tag – made especially by Meta Semitekol – that Meta always stitched into her garments gave her away.

Meta didn’t talk about her many accomplishments, nor was she, Barbara said, aware

during the Great Depression, the modern-day Meta recycled everything, including the plastic bags and rubber bands that surrounded each day’s issue of The Herald-News, Mary Fran said.

“She even took wrapping paper off gently and ironed it out for the next use,” Mary Fran said, with Barbara adding, “She hung the sheets on the line, never in the dryer.”

Meta met John while working for her uncle. Another employee had written a “Dear John” letter to him, Barbara said. Meta felt sorry for him, so she followed up with a kind letter of her own. That brand of individuality touched even their children’s lives.

“She had very nonconformist daughters. We didn’t go off and get married in our mid-20s,” Barbara said. “One sister [Kathy Nichols] went to Alaska in 1971 and never returned. She lives out in the country and is the ultimate craft artist queen. My mom visited Kathy every other year.”

During Meta’s last year of life, she returned to her farm-girl roots. Each week, from May to November, Meta and Barbara helped Meta’s grandson, Devon Dempsey, a Geneva organic farmer, with his harvest.

“She would help clean the garlic, the onions and whatever else we had. That was a big thing for her,” Barbara said. “She was very happy to be out in the farm fields.”

Born May 14, 1935 in Joliet, she was the daughter of George and Agnes (nee Furto) Beno and a graduate of Joliet Central High School. She worked for many years for the Diocese of Joliet.

Betty was a talented artist and painter who took great pride in her home and enjoyed collecting dolls and figurines. She will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Renowned, innovative French filmmaker Resnais dies at 91 The ASSOCIATED PRESS PARIS – Alain Resnais, the French filmmaker whose cryptic “Last Year at Marianbad” extended its influence across generations, has died at 91.

Resnais was editing drafts of his next project even from his hospital bed, according to pro- Alain ducer Jean-Lou- Resnais is Livi, who was working on the film with him.

Resnais, who died Saturday, was renowned for reinventing himself during each of his full-length films, which included the acclaimed “Hiroshima Mon Amour” in 1959 and most recently “Life of Riley,” which was honored at the Berlin Film Festival just

weeks ago.

“He was a man of the highest quality, a genius,” Livi told France Info radio on Sunday, confirming Resnais’ death with “enormous sadness, accompanied by enormous pride.”

French President Francois Hollande said France had lost “one of its greatest filmmakers.”

“He received all the recognition and prizes. But what counted for him was always his next work,” Hollande said in a statement.

“Last Year at Marianbad” is his most influential work, mixing fragments of time and weirdness within a castle. The 1961 film is routinely cited among the highest works of French New Wave artistry, although Resnais’ career extended well beyond that period.

Lieutenant gov candidates reshape primary tactics State’s governor, lieutenant governor running together The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – From running an alpaca farm to working at Chicago law firms, Illinois’ six lieutenant governor candidates cover a wide spectrum of political and life experiences – differences in the spotlight more than ever before.

For the first time, the state’s governor and lieutenant governor candidates are running together, a recent reform that’s evident on the campaign trail. The six duos split up to reach more voters with their message ahead of the March 18 primary and talk about team work once in office, while most offer some level of demographic and geographic diversity. But running in pairs is also risky, like when candidates disagree on an issue.

The six candidates for the state’s No. 2 spot are relatively unknown statewide, aside from one Republican lawmaker and a former Chicago Public Schools chief. They’ve kept low profiles and are sparsely seen in ads. However, the team approach – instituted after embarrassing revelations about the 2010 Democratic nominee – could refashion the role of the next understudy governor after years of questions over whether the state needs one at all.

“It’s a new role as kind of an equal partner,” said Republican state Rep. Jil Tracy, who is running with Sen. Kirk Dillard of Hinsdale.

Of the four Republicans, Dillard has incorporated his pick the most. At debates, he’s held up Tracy’s picture while describing her as an attorney whose family runs Mt. Sterling-based Dot Foods. He SAID she will be tasked with repealing anti-business regulations.

However, the team is less in sync when it comes to the Legislature’s landmark state pension overhaul, which will cut benefits to state workers and retirees if not overturned by the courts. Dillard voted

against it. Tracy was in favor and served on the committee that drafted a framework for it.

A rival governor candidate, state Sen. Bill Brady, often points out the discrepancy. Officials with the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, who endorsed Dillard because of his no vote, said the split caused them to pause.

Tracy, of Quincy, acknowledges it’s hard to explain.

“We had cobbled together a bill. It was not perfect,” she said. “Sen. Dillard and I ... agree wholeheartedly on most issues.”

Winnetka venture capitalist Bruce Rauner and his lieutenant governor partner, Wheeling City Councilwoman Evelyn Sanguinetti, disagree on Illinois’ new medical marijuana law. Rauner said he wouldn’t extend a pilot program adopted last year that will allow sick patients to get medical cannabis. But Sanguinetti is in favor; she suffers from multiple sclerosis and said there are benefits for people in pain.

The lieutenant governor picks have been a way to offer voters some diversity. The four Republicans are all white males and each chose either a woman or a minority, both target demographic groups as the party attempts to broaden its appeal after big losses in 2012.

Brady of Bloomington selected former Long Grove Village President Maria Rodriguez, whose family owns an alpaca farm. She’s mostly Irish, her husband is part Cuban and she talks about embracing all cultures. She’s also writing a book on women’s empowerment.

Treasurer Dan Rutherford, another GOP governor candidate, chose Steve Kim, a Korean-American who immigrated as a young child, a story he shares at Korean churches.

“A lot of the Asian community feels as though they

haven’t been represented,” he said.

Sanguinetti – a Spanish-speaking attorney and professor whose parents are from Ecuador and Cuba – has reached out to Latinos.

She considers her life story her biggest achievement, including lifting herself from poverty. It’s a contrast to the narrative around her ticket partner, Rauner, who’s been able to pour millions into his own campaign.

Like others, the two travel Illinois separately, something Sanguinetti describes as a “divide and conquer approach.”

The lieutenant governor has few official duties beyond being prepared to take over, earning it the nickname “light governor.” But that remote possibility actually unfolded when Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested and jailed on corruption charges.

He was impeached in 2009, allowing then-Lt. Gov. Quinn to assume the office.

The next year, the Democratic nomination was won by Scott Lee Cohen, a pawn shop owner. But Democratic leaders forced him to step aside after a past domestic battery charge and other issues surfaced. Soon after, lawmakers changed election law to make governor and lieutenant governor candidates run together.

Quinn has chosen former Chicago schools chief Paul Vallas, a former CPS leader and currently a school superintendent in Connecticut. The governor faces only one lesser-known Democratic challenger and isn’t expected to ramp up his campaign until after the primary, but Vallas has campaigned without him.

Quinn’s challenger, anti-violence activist Tio Hardiman, chose Brunell Donald, a Chicago attorney who worked as a public defender and motivational speaker. The two campaign together, recently in rough East St. Louis neighborhoods.

By LARA JAKES The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Western powers on Sunday prepared a tough response to Russia’s military advance into Ukraine and warned that Moscow could face economic penalties, diplomatic isolation and bolstered allied defenses in Europe unless it retreats.

The crisis may prove to be a game-changer for President Barack Obama’s national security policy, forcing him to give up his foreign policy shift to Asia and to maintain U.S. troop levels in Europe to limit Russia’s reach.

The ill will and mistrust also could spill over on two other global security fronts – Syria and Iran – where Russia has been a necessary partner with the West.

Russian President Vladimir Putin gave no indication that he would heed the West’s warnings. Hundreds of armed men surrounded a Ukrainian mili-

erational control over Crimea and has more than 6,000 forces in the region. The U.S. also was watching for ethnic skirmishes in other areas of eastern Ukraine, though the officials said they had not yet seen Russian military moves elsewhere.

The officials were not authorized to publicly discuss the sit-

uation and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Secretary of State John Kerry said he has consulted with other world leaders, and “every single one of them are prepared to go to the hilt in order to isolate Russia with respect to this invasion.” President Barack Obama spoke Sunday with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister David Cameron and Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski.

Kerry planned to travel to Kiev Tuesday for meetings with the Ukrainian government. Officials said the Obama administration also would focus this week on putting together a package of economic assistance for Ukraine.

In Brussels, NATO’s secretary-general, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, said Russia’s actions have violated a U.N. charter. He said the alliance was re-evaluating its relationship with Russia.

“There are very serious re-

percussions that can flow out of this,” Kerry said.

Beyond economic sanctions and visa bans, freezing Russian assets, and trade and investment penalties, Kerry said Moscow risks being booted out of the powerful Group of Eight group of world powers as payback for the military incursion.

Several U.S. senators also called for bolstered missile defense systems based in Poland and the Czech Republic.

Russia is “going to be inviting major difficulties for the long term,” said Kerry. “The people of Ukraine will not sit still for this. They know how to fight.”

Still, it was clear that few in the West were prepared to respond immediately to Putin with military force.

At the Vatican, Pope Francis used his traditional Sunday midday appearance in St. Peter’s Square to urge world leaders to promote dialogue as a way of resolving the crisis in Ukraine.

Wide range of wintry conditions affects half of U.S.

In the latest blast of a harsh winter, forecasters said a layer of ice and 8 to 12 inches of snow was possible by the end of Monday in Washington and the Mid-Atlantic region, while 6 to 8 inches of snow was predicted across parts of southern Pennsylvania. Nearly a foot of snow was expected in parts of New Jersey.

More snow and ice, perhaps as much as 2 inches falling every hour, were on the way ahead of Monday’s morning commute. By late Sunday afternoon, rain was moved into the Washington area, temperatures dropped and the city had declared a snow emergency beginning early Monday.

A round of wintry precipitation moved across much of the nation Sunday, bringing a mix of freezing rain and heavy snow to central and eastern states. Authorities warned of possible power outages and flight disruptions from weather that could affect millions.

Silence hardly golden in state legislature Almost anyone concerned about good government agrees that lame-duck sessions are not the right way to make decisions.

Rep. Jim Durkin, R-Western Springs, wants to do something about it. It’s doubtful his idea will gain immediate traction, but it’s worth considering.

The Illinois General Assembly has a long history of making difficult decisions during sessions when many legislators are leaving office.

The most often stated example, and one of the more infamous, was when Democrats worked together to pass a 67 percent increase in the personal income tax in January 2011.

That tax, which is supposed to end this year, was supported by many legislators that didn’t have to face voters again. Some of them spoke out against tax increases until the day they voted for one.

There are other examples and many statehouse observers are predicting January 2015 will bring about another lame-duck

decision. The belief is that the General Assembly will not address the tax expiration issue until after the November election. If Gov. Pat Quinn is re-elected, the thinking goes, then Democrats will extend the tax in some form.

If the GOP wins the governor’s race, then the ensuing budget problem will be dumped into the new governor’s lap.

Quinn hasn’t made it clear where he stands on the tax question. We’ll get a better idea when he delivers a proposed budget to the General Assembly.

Durkin, one of the House political leaders, has introduced a proposal that would place a constitutional amendment on the November ballot to basically outlaw lame-duck sessions.

Under Durkin’s proposal, the inauguration date would be moved from January to the second Wednesday in December, about a month after the election.

The General Assembly couldn’t meet that month unless it was an emergency. Such an emergency session would have to be

approved by the four legislative leaders, be for a specific reason and action would be limited to that topic.

“Plain and simple, if a legislator wants to vote for a tax increase or other controversial bill they need to be held accountable to their constituents. Period,” Durkin wrote.

The future of the proposal is cloudy. To place a constitutional amendment on the ballot requires either a massive petition signing effort, or approval by the General Assembly.

It’s unlikely the signatures can be gathered in time to get the issue on the ballot and the Democrat-controlled General Assembly usually isn’t keen on giving away any political advantages.

There’s no doubt that politics are a part of the Republicans’ proposal. It says a lot about the General Assembly, however, that it probably would take a constitutional amendment to force them to do the right thing.

Lockport opens vs. Joliet West; Central hopes for shot at Bloom

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com oments after Joliet Central survived Lockport 53-49 in Friday’s regular-season finale, Joliet Central boys basketball coach Jeff Corcoran complimented his team’s two biggest rivals. “[Joliet] West and Lockport both can be pretty dangerous in the tournament,” he said. “I know they face each other Monday, but I don’t know if anyone wants to face the one that wins that game.”

West and Lockport split two games in the regular season and will tangle at 6 p.m. Monday in the Class 4A Lincoln-Way Central Regional. Central, meanwhile, is headed to the Bloom Regional, where it will open Tuesday against Lincoln-Way East or Crete-Monee.

The Steelmen (17-9) have won more games than a Central team has won since the late 1980s. They are the No. 5 seed in the 23-team Thornton Sectional. Bloom is No. 4 and, barring upsets, that will be the regional final matchup Friday night.

“I don’t want to look past anyone, but I would like a shot at Bloom,” Corcoran said. The Trojans went on a late run and beat the Steelmen in the MLK Day of Hoops on Jan. 20.

“It seems like every year we play them even if they aren’t on the regular schedule,” Corcoran said. “Ron [Ashlaw, a first-year coach] has done a good job transitioning from Jasper [Williams]. They play the same style they always do.”

“It seems like as soon as we get one guy back healthy, another takes his spot (on the injured list),” Corcoran said.

While the seeds suggest the Joliet area will not have much representation left after the regionals end Friday night, the unexpected has been known to happen. There are matchups involving local teams that will be especially interesting, beginning with the West-Lockport game.

Lockport coach Lawrence Thompson Jr. said his team will have to be mentally tough if they hope to get past

the Tigers. His Porters made 8 of 10 free throws in the first half against Central, 7 of 15 in the second half, an indication the mental toughness is not where Thompson says it needs to be.

“We can’t make our kids taller, but we do work on things they can improve like their agility and ball handling,” Thompson said. “It really comes down to mental toughness.”

The winner of West-Lockport will face highly regarded Thornton on Tuesday night.

At Plainfield Central, the host Wildcats may earn a berth in Tuesday’s doubleheader against mighty Marian Catholic and super guard Tyler Ulis. And Providence could earn its way into the Friday title game against Marian.

STAFF REPORTS JOLIET – Thirteen University of St. Francis women’s indoor track & field athletes have qualified to participate in the 2014 NAIA National Championships to be held Thursday through Sunday at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. The Saints’ 13-athlete contingent includes eight runners, three throwers and two jumpers.

Among USF’s track qualifiers are a pair of relay teams: the 4 x 800-meter quartet of Daryll Rodriguez, Saman-

tha Bond of Lockport, Julia Borel-Donohue and Erin Suttman; and the distance medley team of Suttman, Rodriguez, Bond and Hilary Halford. The Saints’ distance medley relay team clocked the fifth-fastest time in the NAIA (12 minutes, 19.99 seconds) during the regular season.

Kaitlin Hoy, a Minooka graduate, and Meredith DeLuca will represent USF in the 5,000-meter run, while Brooke Johnson will compete in the mile.

Lumpkin and Nicole Ekhomu are a special tandem.

As with any successful team, however, role players are essential. The Angels boast a solid trio in Christine Ekhomu and 6-foot freshmen forwards Ty Battle and Knaya Walker.

“I’ve been saying since the beginning that we have some of the best chemistry that I’ve seen,” Christine Ekhomu said.

“We have a team that will pass up a good shot for a great shot.”

“Everybody on this team contributes,” Lumpkin said. “I love our team chemistry. We play unselfish ball.”

Battle said playing freshman year with Lumpkin has been a godsend for her and Walker.

“Jasmine is my role model, even though I have to guard her in practice and she makes me look silly,” Battle said.

Christine Ekhomu epitomizes the Angels’ unselfishness. The point guard did not score in the first half against McNamara and was perfectly content as long as the team was succeeding. But JCA needed her to do more in the second half, and she scored 13 points.

“I’m so happy for Christine,” said Lumpkin, who scored 17 of her team-high 27 points in the first quarter.

“This was her game, too. I told her to keep taking it to the basket if it was there, and she did a great job.”

She helped put the Angels on the doorstep of school history.

“This win was huge for the whole school,” coach Ed Schodrof said.

“It feels good to be part of history,” Christine Ekhomu added.

The players are not about to look beyond Monday. But you have to wonder what emotion the Angels will be feeling later this week.

It was the type of play that does not show up in the box score. Had ESPN been there, however, it likely would have made the top plays of the day.

In Joliet Catholic’s 78-70 victory over Bishop McNamara on Thursday in the championship game of the Class 3A Lincoln-Way West Sectional, Angels’ 5-foot-9 sophomore guard Nicole Ekhomu attempted to prevent a McNamara player from scoring a layup.

Moving in from behind, Ekhomu bought the fake and went airborne. She completely hurdled her opponent and landed solidly on her feet.

They say you see something new every game. As far as I can recall, that show of athleticism was a first for me.

“I had never seen Nikki do that before,” smiled her sister, senior guard Christine Ekhomu. “She has great body control. It’s an amazing gift that she has.”

Nicole Ekhomu, ranked among the best sophomores in the country, and 6-foot senior forward Jasmine Lumpkin, who will continue her career at Michigan State, are the headliners on an Angels team that arguably is the best in the school history.

Of course, before we speak in those terms, there is more to be done.

The Angels (26-2) will face Washington at 7 p.m. Monday in the supersectional at Lewis University’s Neil Carey Arena. Washington beat Peoria Notre Dame, 65-42, for its sectional title.

In November, after the town of Washington was devastated by a tornado, members of the Joliet Catholic community traveled there to lend a helping hand. The girls will compete on the court, but there will be a certain feeling of camaraderie as well.

Should JCA win, that would mean its first-ever trip to the state semifinals and the first visit to the state tournament since the 1985 St. Francis Academy team featuring Chris Toscas lost to Peoria Richwoods, 65-58, in the Class AA quarterfinals.

The year before, in 1984, the Angels won a sectional title and finished 24-7. The era of

By JAY COHEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Jimmer Fredette wanted to start over. The Bulls wanted to improve their outside shooting.

Each side is hoping for a perfect match.

Fredette joined the surging Bulls on Sunday after the team announced it had signed the sharp-shooting guard for the rest of the season. The 6-foot-2 Fredette then played the last three minutes of the Bulls’ 109-90 victory over the New York Knicks, drilling a long jumper for his first basket with his new team.

“These guys did a great job the whole game and got a big lead and I was able to get into the game,” Fredette said. “I don’t really know the plays or anything like that. Just knew a few simple things and ran those. But it felt good to get in there in front of the fans, and to have a great win like that was great for us.”

Fredette, the 10th overall pick in the 2011 draft, was bought out by the Sacramento Kings Thursday and cleared waivers on Saturday. He is averaging just 5.8 points and

11.1 minutes in his third season but is shooting 49 percent from 3-point range.

The Bulls, who have won nine of 10, had been looking for more outside shooting since they lost Marco Belinelli in free agency last offseason and then traded Luol Deng to Cleveland in January.

“Jimmer is going to be a hell of a player here,” said teammate Jimmy Butler, who had 19 points against New York. “I hear he works incred-

ibly hard, and we all know he can shoot the ball.”

The knock on Fredette is his defensive ability and finding a way to get open for his accurate shot, but coach Tom Thibodeau said he wants to come to his own conclusions about what the former BYU star can do on the court.

“He’s got to learn defensively what to do in terms of team defense and that’s usually the biggest adjustment,” Thibodeau said before the

game. “But the fact that he can shoot the way that he can, I think it complements our primary scorers as well.”

Fredette became a top NBA prospect when he led the nation in scoring at 28.5 points a game during his senior year with the Cougars, who made it to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament in his last season.

He was The Associated Press player of the year, but he never lived up to his billing in Sacramento after the Kings acquired him in a draft-day trade with Milwaukee.

It was clear his time with the Kings was coming to an end when they decided not to pick up his option for 2014-15 before this season.

“I appreciate everything that happened in Sacramento,” Fredette said. “It was character building for me continuing to go out and play hard. I feel like I progressed as a player. Even though sometimes you don’t get the minutes you want to, you’ve just got to continue to work hard and know that if you keep playing hard and doing the right things then eventually things will turn your way.”

Harvick wins second straight at Phoenix

By JOHN MARSHALL The Associated Press AVONDALE, Ariz. – Kevin Harvick charged to the front early and dominated the rest of the way Sunday for his second straight Sprint Cup victory at Phoenix International Raceway.

Coming off a disappointing finish at the Daytona 500, Harvick had the fastest car in practice and kept it rolling in the race, leading 224 of 312 laps on the odd-shaped mile oval.

Harvick won the fall race at PIR for Richard Childress Racing after Carl Edwards ran out of fuel at the white flag. Harvick needed no help Sunday, quickly moving to

the front after starting 13th and pulling away on a series of late restarts to win in his second race with Stewart-Haas Racing. It was Harvick’s fifth Sprint Cup win at PIR, most on the career list.

Daytona 500 winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished second, pole sitter Brad Keselowski was third and Penske Racing teammate Joey Logano fourth.

Jeff Gordon rounded out the top five on a warm and partly cloudy day after downpours wiped out the final 32 laps of Saturday’s Nationwide race, won by Kyle Busch Harvick won at Phoenix during the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship in the fall, giving him an out-

side shot at catching Jimmie Johnson for the series title in his final season with Richard Childress Racing. He came up short, but the victory and a third-place finish in the standings gave him a bit of momentum heading into for his first season with Stewart-Haas.

Harvick had a solid finish in his sights at Daytona last week before a last-lap crash dropped him to 13th.

At Phoenix, Harvick just missed the final stage of knockout qualifying, nipped by 0.001 seconds, but had the fastest car in Saturday morning’s final practice session.

He started 13th and quickly moved his way through the field from the green flag, passing Keselowski on the apron,

then Logano for the lead on lap 74. Harvick maintained the lead coming out of greenflag pit stops with just under 200 laps left and again with about 70 laps left.

A series of cautions came out late in the race, and Harvick easily pulled away each time to earn a quick win with SHR on the same weekend he celebrated his 13th wedding anniversary with wife DeLana.

Earnhardt had a whirlwind week after winning his second Daytona 500, needing his girlfriend to get him extra clothes while he went on a media tour.

He had a solid follow-up, putting the distractions aside to qualify fifth.

Moustakas homers twice, Royals down Cubs MESA, Ariz. – Mike Moustakas homered twice, Eric Hosmer added three hits and the Kansas City Royals beat the Cubs, 5-3, on Sunday.

Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro left after the first inning with a slight strain of his right hamstring.

He hurt himself trying to steal a base.

Moustakas hit a drive off Cubs starter Edwin Jackson to lead off the second inning.

He hit a two-run shot off Carlos Villanueva in the third.

Hosmer doubled twice, and all of his hits went to the opposite field. Lorenzo Cain had two hits for the Royals.

Kansas City starter Wade Davis gave up one hit in two scoreless innings.

The game at Cubs Park drew a crowd of 14,680.

‘Every single dog we rescued got a home’ Annie’s Little Angels pet rescue closes its doors

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com In 2009, when former shelter volunteer Brandy Gergescz of Plainfield founded Annie’s Little Angels Humane Education & Small Breed Dog & Cat Rescue, she truly desired to make an impact in the lives of abused and abandoned pets.

Unfortunately, the volume of animals facing euthanasia was so great, it overwhelmed Gergescz’s physical and emotional reserves. Last year, after much deliberating on Gergescz’s part, Annie’s Little Angels shut its virtual doors.

“I don’t think people realize how hectic it is, how many animals come into shelters to potentially be euthanized. It’s a daily insanity,” Gergescz said. “The phone never stops ringing, the emails never stop coming.”

Gergescz learned about puppy mills after buying a dog from a pet store and was just 21 when she started volunteering at shelters. Small breeds did not fare well in shelters and were often labeled “unadoptable.”

Intimidated by their larger counterparts, these tiny animals would either emotionally retreat or lash out. Gergescz only saw their sorrow and fear. She grew determined to help them.

“People are less likely to pull a snapping Chihuahua when you can’t even get him out of the cage,” Gergescz, now 34, said. “With a little coaxing, you can get them out,

and it doesn’t take long before they become the sweetest little dogs. We never had an aggression problem after we pulled a dog.”

Gergescz founded Annie’s Little Angels with huge doses of sensibility and practicality.

For instance, once a veterinarian bill reached $4,000, Annie’s Little Angels would reduce that bill before accepting another pet. Gergescz was almost true to her word. Her highest vet bill was $5,000, she said.

“I’d see other rescues run up $30,000 in debt and I thought, ‘No way,’ ” Gergescz said. “When bills got to $3,000, I’d get nervous.”

However, focusing time and attention on needy animals meant putting her husband, David Gergescz, and her children, Jaden Gergescz, now 11, and Olivia Gergescz, now 8, in last place. The stress of addressing the never-ending avalanche of animals in need and scraping together the means to care for them aggravated Gergescz’s fibromyalgia.

From time to time, when vet bills hit the financial ceiling, Gergescz would refrain from accepting additional animals. She never intended to quit rescue altogether until Jaden developed an irregular heartbeat and began a whirlwind of diagnostic tests.

“At that point, we were unsure of its severity,” Gergescz said. “I thought at the time, ‘He’s going to be 10 and he’s spent his entire life in animal shelters, on transports and with me sitting with my face at

So Annie’s Little Angels stopped adding new animals to the fold and worked hard to place those already in its care.

Most of its foster parents and dogs, already vetted, moved under the wings of other rescue organizations, Gergescz said.

Three dogs and two fosters stayed with Annie’s Little Angels until those dogs had permanent homes. A series of auctions paid all but $600 of the vet bill, which Gergescz herself wiped out. Cody, an 8-year-old miniature pinscher-Chihuahua mix, rescued in 2012, was adopted last month, to Gergescz’s enormous satisfaction.

“Every single dog we rescued got a home,” she said.

Her children, Gergescz said, initially felt sad but also happy at the prospect of spending more time with their mother.

Despite Gergescz’s determination to do otherwise, David encouraged Gergescz not to completely shut down the business, she said.

“He said to ‘give it some time and see’ and I’m glad I did,” Gergescz said. “It had been a part of me for so long.”

For Gergescz, life after the animal rescue means, well, more rescue, albeit in a different form. Gergescz now consults, educates, advises and assists with 501(c)3 paperwork and listens when volunteers need to vent. Gergescz also has more time to spend with her own children.

Although Annie’s Little Angels no longer physically accepts animals, Gergescz still tries to place pets with other rescues and fosters. She posts photos of adoptable pets, as well as rescue event information, on Annie’s Little Angels Facebook page. She donates her time at pet shelters and she still gets wistful.

“Especially when I see someone comment on an old picture, get updates from an adopter or I look through albums,” Gergescz said. “But I don’t miss the stress of it.”

Gergescz also doesn’t regret overseeing a rescue.

“We saved too many lives,” Gergescz said. “Animals that were once mistrusting are now cared for in families.”

At the bridge table, we want to prove whether or not a contract is makable. This is usually easier when we can see all 52 cards, or have been warned there is a trap somewhere. When we are just playing at the table, it can be easy to make a mistake almost on autopilot.

In today’s deal, South is in three no-trump. West leads his fourth-highest heart. East wins with his king and returns the heart nine. Who should prevail, declarer or the defenders?

After a one-no-trump opening, some pairs use a jump-response of three of a major to show game values with a singleton (or void) in that suit, three cards in the other major and 5-4 (or 5-5) in the minors. Partner can usually judge the right contract. However, without that agreement, North should just jump to three no-trump.

Declarer has seven top tricks: two spades, four diamonds and one club. He can get at least one heart trick and three more club winners. How might he go down?

Only if the club finesse is losing and the defenders take four hearts and one club.

The key play is almost counterintuitive. At trick two, South must play his second low heart, which cuts the communication between the defenders. If instead he covers with the queen or jack, West can play low. Then, when East gets in with his club king, a third heart through declarer defeats the contract.

Watch out for this difficult duck.

Couple’s long-ago abortion casts shadow over ex-wife Dear Abby: Before my husband and I were married, I became pregnant with his baby. We decided together we weren’t ready for the responsibility and made the mutual decision to end the pregnancy early in the first trimester.

We did marry eventually and had a baby girl a few years after that, who is now in college.

My ex and I divorced many years ago because of his many affairs, including one with his best friend’s wife. I have come to believe my ex told our daughter about our decision out of spite because I told her about the affairs when she was old enough to understand, since she may have a half-sister.

Should I ask my daughter about this or let it go? It was a very private decision, and I think he is a creep for hurting her by telling her. – Furious

Should I be worried?

Dear Reader: Just as it took time for your child to learn his first word, it takes time for children to learn to speak clearly and correctly. To see what the latest thinking on this is, I talked to pediatrician colleagues at Harvard Medical School.

In their first couple of years of life, all children pronounce words incorrectly as they are learning to speak. By 3 years of age, children pronounce most of their words correctly and a stranger would understand at least three-quarters of them. By 4 years of age, mispronounced words are less common. However, even at this age, many children still use words incorrectly and have difficulty with certain sounds, especially f, l, r, s, v, sh and th.

Stuttering, an interruption in the normal flow of speech, can be a phase in the normal speech development for some children. Stuttering is typically first noticed between the ages of 2 and 5,

Many cases of stuttering last for only a few months, and most children who stutter stop completely before the end of their childhood.

If your child mispronounces words, makes grammatical mistakes or stutters, you can help at home by doing the following: • Encourage conversation.

Set aside time each day for sitting down and talking with your child one-on-one. Also talk while doing everyday activities such as grocery shopping or making dinner.

• Use adult language, not “baby talk,” when speaking with your child.

• Speak to your child slowly and clearly.

• Make eye contact and use facial expressions and other body language in addition to words to enhance communication with your child.

It’s often your expressions and body language that help them to learn the meaning of words.

• Be a patient, attentive listener.

• Do not finish your child’s words or sentences and do not interrupt.

• Do not pressure your child to speak to strangers or perform in public.

If you still are concerned, talk with your child’s doctor.

He or she can refer you to a speech-language pathologist for further evaluation if needed. Speech-language pathologists can help you and your doctor distinguish normal variability in speech development from a true problem.

Not every blossom unfurls the same way in the morning sun, and not every child progresses in the same way through the stages of childhood development. It is sometimes said even Albert Einstein was very slow to speak (although several biographers have expressed doubt about that). In any event, some kids are precocious in one area and slow in others – and then catch up.
