Joliet expects to pay $200,000 to cover upcoming Rialto shows

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet is on the hook for roughly $200,000 on two upcoming shows at the Rialto Square Theatre, while the City Council on Monday voted to advance the theater $140,000, the next installment of the city’s annual funding.

In the next week, city and Rialto officials are to work on an intergovernmental agreement that could allow Inspector General Chris Regis to do an investigation of the theater.

The financial condition of the theater remains unclear.

But City Manager Jim Hock at a special City Council meeting Monday said his letter last week in which the city guaranteed payments for upcoming acts will involve money.

Hock issued the letters, saying they guaranteed that performers will get paid by the city if the Rialto cannot pay. Now it appears the Rialto does not have the money.

Joliet will pay up to $49,000 for a Pauly Shore show on April 7, Hock said. An additional $153,000 will be paid for Jeff Foxworthy, when he performs April 8.

Joliet city manager The payments mark a new level of support from the city, which is taking responsibility to ensure that acts get paid.

The city typically provides $600,000 a year, which comes in quarterly payments, in general support to the Rialto.

But Hock and others Monday said city backing of Rialto shows was essential to keep the theater open.

“It instills a level of confidence in the public in buying tickets at the Rialto,” Hock said.

Hock also said the theater would face new challenges in booking acts if performers were not paid.

“If they walk out the door and they’re not paid, they’re never coming back,” he said. “They’re never doing business with the Rialto in the future.”

The city had been scheduled to make

its second quarterly contribution of $150,000 to the Rialto on Friday. But the city already has advanced $10,000 of that to pay a portion of the $123,000 in late payroll taxes that have been piling up since November. The remainder of that installment will be released to pay the remaining payroll taxes.

Rialto General Manager Randy Green has been put on paid leave since the payroll tax issue arose. The City Council previously balked at the prospect of paying any more money to the Rialto until Green was out and the city’s inspector general was let in.

Council members on Monday agreed to send money while giving notice that they still want the two conditions met.

The council voted, 6-1, to release the money. Larry Hug voted no. Jim McFarland was absent.

Rialto board attorney David Silverman said the Rialto has not offered to pay any money to Green to encourage an early exit from his contract, which expires in December.

“We’ve tried to come up with a strategy to ask him to resign without spending any funds,” Silverman told the council. “So far we have not been able to do that.”

LOCAL BRIEFS Dead body discovered in Wilmington motel room

WILMINGTON – A motel manager discovered a decomposing body Monday inside a Wilmington business after employees noticed a strong smell outside one of its rooms.

When the manager at the Van Duyne Motel, 107 Bridge St., found the body in an advanced stage of decomposition, police were called and began an investigation, according to a Wilmington Police Department news release.

Police do not suspect foul play and found no signs of illegal activity in the room, the release stated.

The Will County Coroner’s Office removed the body and will determine the exact cause

Yard waste pickup resumes Friday in Joliet

The city of Joliet and Waste Management are announcing the return of yard waste collection effective Friday, according to a city news release.

Yard waste collection had been suspended for the winter.

Residents desiring yard waste collection service are reminded that yard waste must be placed in permanent-type, 33-gallon refuse containers identified with a “yard waste only” sticker, or in 32-gallon disposable Kraft paper

Yard waste will not be collected in plastic bags or in containers larger than 33 gallons.

“Yard waste only” stickers are available, free of charge, at all Jewel and Certified Warehouse Foods locations in Joliet and at the information desk of the Joliet Municipal Building.

Brush and branches may either be placed in permanent-type containers or Kraft paper bags, or tied in bundles not exceeding 4 feet in length or 50 pounds in weight. No “yard waste only” sticker is necessary for bundled yard waste. Yard waste containers must contain only yard waste.

Yard waste will be picked up on a weekly basis through Dec. 9.

Exec director: Growing demand, understanding for addiction treatment

JOLIET – Jeff Turngren knew his drinking was becoming a problem when he found himself turning over couch cushions for $2.38 worth of change – enough to buy his morning beer at the gas station near his home.

“It got to the point where I was digging through couches, bumming money off friends that I could never pay back to go get my fix for the day,” the 26-year-old from Peotone said.

Occasional visits to a rehab facility in Kankakee weren’t cutting it, he said, so he put in a call to Stepping Stones addiction treatment center in Joliet and waited for a bed to open.

His father – eager to see his son get help – called the center every day leading up to March 21, the day Turngren entered treatment.

“I knew deep down I needed help, but I think I needed that extra push [from my family],” Turngren said.

In the 1970s, those seeking treatment at Stepping Stones were typically 30 years or older. But today, younger people – like Turngren – are beginning to seek treatment sooner in life as society increasingly views substance abuse disorders as a treatable illness, not a moral failing, said Pete McLenighan, the center’s executive director.

A 45-year history

The place that Turngren will call home for two weeks is celebrating this month 45 years in the community as a safe haven for addicts.

Stepping Stones was born out of two organizations – the Joliet Halfway House and Sheltering Arms – which began in 1971 and 1977, respectively, as separate men’s and women’s recovery homes. The two combined in 1991 to form Stepping Stones.

The nonprofit’s main facility at 1621 Theodore St. in Joliet – once a Howard Johnson motel – has long housed shortand long-term residential clients while providing space for counseling and administrative offices.

Like many nonprofits in the U.S., Stepping Stones has witnessed major changes in the addiction treatment industry during its 45-year history, having survived years of funding cuts despite growing demand for services.

two-person staff and a $10,642 annual budget to serving nearly 700 men and women in 2015 with a 65-person staff

and a $2.2 million annual budget.

At the same time, treatment has drastically changed from a blanket-

ed approach to individualized, person-centered care, McLenighan said.

“Increasingly, the public accepts and policymakers accept that treatment is an important and vital component,” he said.

Joliet West vocal music director honored

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet West High School educator is one of 30 in the region who is being given a shot to win a prestigious teaching excellence award.

Golden Apple – a nonprofit dedicated to teacher excellence in Chicago and its surrounding suburbs – named Timothy DeBoer, vocal music di- Timothy rector at West, as one of DeBoer 30 finalists for the 2016 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching.

DeBoer was the only teacher in Will County to be named a finalist. Last year, Golden Apple named two finalists, one each from Lockport and Plainfield schools.

DeBoer said being a finalist is a tremendous honor, but also humbling since he works with so many great teachers.

“Hopefully, I can be an example for people to see that teachers really do work hard and we really do make a difference,” he said.

Golden Apple named 24 finalists from Cook County, two from Lake County and one each from Kane, DuPage and McHenry counties, respectively.

The finalists were narrowed down from a pool of more than 400 nominees.

After a final round of review and classroom observations, only 10 award recipients will be announced this spring, according to Golden Apple’s website.

Each Golden Apple recipient receives a tuition-free, spring quarter sabbatical to study at Northwestern University, as well as a $5,000 cash

JJC to host sustainability initiative events in April

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Junior College staff and students have been working toward sustainability at the college and plan to host events on the initiative in April.

JJC sustainability coordinator Maria Anna Rafac said sustainability is more than just addressing environmental concerns – it’s about economics and equity.

“You cannot think of a career where sustainability in the broadest sense isn’t being used,” she said.

JJC is one of the few colleges where the Board of Trustees have a sustainability policy, she said. The policy states the college is committed to minimizing the environmental impact of college activities through continuous improvement of environmental performance.

In April, JJC and the Student Sustainability Union plan to organize events for Earth Month.

Student Kris Dubenic, who is involved with the Student Sustainability Union, said there will be tours given in April of the college arboretum and greenhouse, natural areas at JJC and LEED-certified campus buildings.

Buildings with a LEED – or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – certification are resource efficient, use relatively little water and

energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, according to the U.S. Green Building Council.

“It’s basically trying to inform people about the efforts we have on campus while kind of getting a long workout in because they will be long tours,” Dubenic said.

The tour of the arboretum and greenhouse will be April 5, the tour of LEED-certified buildings will be April 19 and the natural areas tour will be April 29, Dubenic said.

He said there also will be a restoration day April 10 to restore natural areas on campus and a pollution solution outing April 16 to clean up Houbolt Road outside JJC. Dubenic said volunteers will work with the Helpers of Mother Earth organization on the effort.

Dubenic said April 12 there will be a Climate Reality speaker coming to JJC and April 22 will be an Earth Day expo, which will have vendors, free food and activities.

This year, JJC and its sustainability committee collected more than 250 pounds of pens and markers to be recycled by TerraCycle, a company that recycles and upcycles waste materials and products into new ones, according to a JJC news release.

Winners also become fellows of the Golden Apple Academy of Educators, which gives them a stronger voice and larger stage to make a difference in education statewide and nationally, according to Golden Apple.

Golden Apple has recognized outstanding teachers in Illinois for more than 30 years. The organization was

created by Mike and Pat Koldyke to inspire, develop and support teacher excellence.

DeBoer began his career at Joliet Township High School District 204 in 2003. The following year he established the Opera Scenes program, which was almost unprecedented among high schools, according to a district news release.

DeBoer said he was given advice as a college undergraduate student to consider teaching in case being a performer didn’t work out for him. When he started student teaching, he discovered he wanted to be a teacher more.

“You have the opportunity to watch kids change emotionally,” he said.

He said he gets to make music and use it with students in a growth environment.

“It’s not just about the music, it’s also about the people,” he said.

QUICK NEWS Indoor trampoline park to come to Joliet

JOLIET – Sky Zone LLC, creator of the world’s first indoor trampoline playing court, will open its newest location in Joliet, according to a company news release.

Sky Zone Joliet will open later this year at 2318 Essington Road.

The Joliet facility will cover more than 27,000 square feet and offer popular activities including Ultimate Dodgeball, Sky Slam and SkyRobics. Sky Zone Joliet will also offer activities such as a Ninja Warrior Course, a test of balance and endurance; Challenge Zone, featuring jousting pits and slack lines; and Sky Climb, a climbing wall.

The trampoline park will be well-suited for group events such as birthday parties, corporate team building, field trips and more, according to the news release.

“We are building off the success of our Aurora location,” Barbara Glazer, franchise partner of Sky Zone Joliet, said in the news release. “The Joliet community doesn’t have a facility like Sky Zone that promotes awesome, healthy fun, and we are excited to introduce our concept to residents in the surrounding areas.”

Joliet Township High School gets financial reporting award JOLIET – The Association of School

Business Officials International has awarded Joliet Township High School a Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting award for having met or exceeded the program’s standards for financial reporting and accountability, according to a school district news release.

The district was recognized for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the fiscal year ending in 2015.

Recognition through the Certificate of Excellence program can help strengthen a district’s presentation for bond issuance statements and promotes a high level of financial reporting.

Will County coroner earns Diplomate status

JOLIET – Will County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil has earned Diplomate status with the American College of Forensic Examiners Institute, according to a news release from his office.

The institute is the world’s largest association of forensic science professionals.

To earn Diplomate status, a recipient must meet the requirements of the ACFEI in the areas of knowledge, skill, training and experience in the forensic sciences.

“I am honored to be recognized by the ACFEI for my dedication to the forensic sciences and the experience I have attained through my years of service as Will County coroner,” O’Neil said in the release.

Rezin proposes election blackout period for grant announcements Know more

MORRIS – State Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, is pushing legislation that establishes a blackout period during which constitutional officers and legislators cannot announce grants close to an election.

The period would be from Sept. 1 to the day after a general election under Senate Bill 2764.

During that time, “the proper name or image of any executive Sue Rezin branch constitutional R-Morris officer or member of the General Assembly shall not be included in a public announcement” regarding grants awarded by a state agency, according to the proposal.

The bill also would require a merit-based review of how grant recipients are selected and documentation of award decisions including applicant evaluation and scoring, according to a news release from Rezin’s office. SB 2764 also would authorize a state agency to stop payments to any grant recipient who is not in compliance with the grant agreement, according to the news release.

Such measures could prevent misuse of grant funds, Rezin said.

Quinn’s NRI funding was earmarked to curb crime in the most violent Illinois communities, but Rezin said it was later found through an audit that there were “no metrics, no accountability and no performance measures” attached to recipients’ use of those dollars.

“It is important to make sure these grants, when they are given out, that there’s transparency, accountability and paperwork in place,” Rezin said.

State Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, said he doesn’t have a problem with the blackout dates, but noted it’s not uncommon for lawmakers or elected officials to announce initiatives – whether it’s during an election cycle or not.

“As long as it’s appropriated correctly and as long as it goes where it’s supposed to go, I’m OK with it,” Walsh Jr. said.

Rezin also is co-sponsoring several other pieces of legislation relating to disclosure laws. Many of the bills deal with lobbyists and lawmakers disclosing potential conflicts of interest to one another, according to the release.

bstanley@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Police believe road rage led to a confrontation in which a man’s face was slashed with a knife last week in a parking lot behind Starbucks in New Lenox.

“The 37-year-old man told officers he had been driving on Route 30 when there was a traffic altercation with another driver,” Deputy Chief Robert Pawlisz said.

About 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, the man pulled into the parking lot in the 2500 block of East Route 30 and was fol-

lowed by the black or dark blue Honda CRV, which was driven by a man who had a woman as a passenger.

Pawlisz said the driver got out of the CRV, and an argument ensued before he pulled out a knife and sliced the other man’s left cheek before leaving the scene. A witness noticed the

victim’s bleeding face and called 911.

The man was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox and treated for a “severe, but non-life-threatening” injury, Pawlisz said.

The suspect was described as a white or Hispanic man with a ponytail.

Detectives located Moore and other items stolen during the burglaries at his residence in the 4900 block of North Winthrop Avenue in Chicago, Pawlisz said. Moore was booked into the Will County Jail at 6:30 p.m. Friday and is being held on $200,000 bond.

Investigators began checking all suspicious person reports for those areas, noted Musto’s name and included him in a photo lineup shown to witnesses to the vehicle crash, Pawlisz said. Detectives then found Musto had recently sold several items to a pawn shop on Devon Avenue in Chicago.

Pawn shops are required to register certain transactions in a law enforcement database.

“We compared these items with what was taken in the burglaries, including a 1963 Concordia class ring,” Pawlisz said. “Checking into Musto’s activity at the pawn shop also led us

NEW LENOX – Police say two Chicago men have been linked to several residential burglaries that happened earlier this month in New Lenox.

Robert S. Moore, 59, and Franco Musto, 29, were taken into custody late last week, New Le- Robert S. nox Deputy Chief Rob- Moore ert Pawlisz said. Moore was arrested on charges of residential burglary, theft and auto theft. Musto’s

charges were still pending Monday.

“They had been staying with Musto’s cousin for a short time in the area where the burglaries occurred,” Pawlisz said.

Break-ins occurred March 4 in the 400 block of South Pine Street, and March 11 in the 200 block of East Fourth Avenue and the 500 block of South Cedar Road.

Police reported that screens were cut to force open windows so property could be stolen. One vehicle was stolen from a garage but was later recovered after a crash.

Last month, the Joliet nonprofit was forced to suspend its state-funded substance abuse treatment programming because of the months-long Illinois budget impasse. Now, only those with Medicaid or private insurance can access treatment there – but anyone funded through the state’s Department of Human Services or Department of Corrections cannot.

“The hardest part about this job is saying no to people,” McLenighan said.

The shortcomings of Illinois government is forcing the nonprofit to move away from its first and only mission – to provide treatment even if someone is unable to pay, McLenighan said. The

center has not been paid by the state for services provided after July 1.

“We’re veering away from our mission by not being able to serve arguably the most vulnerable – people who do not have insurance, people who do not have Medicaid,” McLenighan said.

The decision allowed the center to maintain staffing levels and programming and also stabilized its finances by serving more Medicaid patients and more patients with private insurance.

But Stepping Stones is “not out of the woods” yet, McLenighan said.

Center leaders will closely monitor Springfield’s budget mess and could reevaluate Stepping Stones finances in June for the possibility of staffing and program reductions.

At any given time, 200 people are on the waiting list for treatment. There’s usually a three-to-four week wait for the center’s most intensive residential services.

That said, seeking treatment is not easy, and often addicts are asked to wait until a bed becomes available,

from growing capacity in fear of losing critical dollars, McLenighan said. Under the rule, treatment centers such as Stepping Stones would no longer qualify for Medicaid reimbursements if they were to go beyond a 16-bed capacity, McLenighan said.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, this year introduced federal legislation to increase that threshold to 40 beds for nationally accredited qualifying centers.

“We need more bed space for this, but these rules really prevent us from being able to take on that kind of expansion. It really is interfering with treatment capacity,” McLenighan said.

Five days into his three-week stay at Stepping Stones, Turngren admitted Friday that he’d be lying if he said he didn’t want a beer.

But he’s not ready to walk away – after all, his hands no longer shake from withdrawal, he said, and he feels happy for the first time in a long time.

“Do I want to go home now? Yeah.

But I know I have to do this,” he said.

“Otherwise I’m just going to go right back to where I was. I know I got to do this for me.”

Lego Mania to come to Auto Dealer Joliet museum Sunday If you go

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – It will be Lego Mania on Sunday at the Joliet Area Historical Museum.

The museum will be holding Lego Mania, a fundraiser that includes exhibits, games and even a performance, all with Lego themes.

“It’s an all-ages event,” said Liz McNeil, special events manager for the museum.

Vendors for Jamberry Nails and Pampered Chef will be at the museum for those looking for a Lego break.

There also will be a buffet lunch. But mostly it will be Legos.

“Everything is somehow connected to Legos,” McNeil said.

That includes Lego bowling, Lego beanbag and special characters playing roles from the movies “Frozen” and “Star Wars,” for which there are Lego kits.

“We’ll have Lego enthusiasts coming in and displaying their creations,” McNeil said. “There’s also going to be a find-the-Lego-man scavenger hunt in the museum.”

The Joliet Catholic Academy improvisational group will present a skit with a Lego theme. Also, children will get

Veteran of the Korean War proudly serving his country in the U.S. Air Force. Jim retired in 1994 to finish building their second home in Missouri. He also enjoyed woodworking, boating and rebuilding car engines.

Preceded in death by his parents; sister, Doris Wasko; and brother, Robert Heinz.

RAYMOND McLAIN Dr. Raymond McLain, Durham, Maine, died peacefully at dawn, Sunday, March 6, 2016, of complications from a traumatic brain injury

Stock McLain. He was a devoted brother to Ginny McLain of Colorado; and brother-in-law to Sarah Semitekol of California. He leaves many cousins and dear friends.

He was preceded by his mother, Alvera; and his father, Raymond, who gave him the gifts of intelligence, good humor and a steady temperament.

Ray was a world traveler whose natural curiosity took him to all corners of the globe.

He travelled only with his wife or family and explored most places on foot or public transportation once he arrived. He was in Berlin with his two sons when the wall fell; in Prague, with a son, as Vaclav Havel took power; in India and the Himalayas with a son; in Holland for a sixweek sabbatical; in Croatia seeking his wife’s family roots; in New Zealand with his wife to attend a full day teaching by the Dalai Lama; and in Vietnam with his two sons and “favorite” son-in-law as a 70th birthday gift from them.

He traveled to London and Portugal with his daughter’s family who was living abroad and the same year he went to Japan alone. Ray was scheduled to make a solo trip to China 10 days after his accident.

He was a local guy, too – a wonderful colleague and friend who quietly affected so many, including those who skied, fished or were on the water with him for so many years.

A gathering to honor Ray will be held at Frontier, Fort Andross, in Brunswick, ME, on Saturday, May 14, 2016. Service 11 to noon with reception to follow immediately. As a lifelong journeyman, Frontier is a fitting place to honor one who quietly pushed boundaries and crossed untold frontiers in his lifetime. All are welcome.

Loretta was born and raised in Joliet and was a parishioner at St. Mary Immaculate in Plainfield as well as St. Mary Nativity in Joliet. She was a member of St. Mary Nativity Choir for over 20 years. Loretta was a member of the St. Mary Nativity Women’s Club. She was a loving wife and mother who will be dearly missed.

Born in Yonkers, New York, and raised in Joliet, he graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1965 and received a master’s degree from the University of Illinois in 1966. He married his wife, Suzanne, in the log chapel on the Notre Dame campus Aug. 6, 1966. They spent their honeymoon in Maine.

Ray and Suzanne worked for the Illinois Department of Mental Health before immigrating to Canada in 1970 as landed immigrants with their two young children, Meeghan and David. They lived and worked in the village of Bracebridge, Muskoka region of Ontario. Ray was employed by the Children’s Aide Society based in Toronto and Suzanne worked for the Muskoka Public Health Council.

The family returned to the University of Notre Dame in 1972 and lived in South Bend, Indiana, for four years while Ray completed his Ph.D. Their third child, Simon, was born during this time. Ray accepted a position as a sociologist at the State University of New York, SUNY Fredonia, in Chautauqua County. The McLains lived in the village of Fredonia near the shores of Lake Erie until Ray’s retirement during the 2006-07 academic years. Amidst many family trips when their children were young, the family traveled to the Maritime provinces, canoe camped in Algonquin Provincial Park, visited Quebec City and tent-camped at Recompense Shore Campground at Wolf’s Neck Farm in Freeport, ME. Raymond and Suzanne purchased a Shelter Institute home on 12 acres in Durham after retirement, continuing a love affair with Canada and Maine that began on their honeymoon.

Ray was a beloved teacher who saw potential in every student. He was educated in the liberal arts tradition as an undergraduate at Notre Dame and remained deeply committed to his students throughout his career. His love was social theory, but he was equally committed to practice. He received a fellowship to study at Yale during the summer of 1980; was instrumental in developing the social work component of his department; and worked increasingly on research and evaluation programs through the Office of Sponsored Research that provided invaluable data for local, regional and state agencies including the NYS Division for Youth. Weeks before his October accident, Ray completed his final statistical analysis and evaluation for WNY Catholic Charities, a professional relationship that spanned decades.

Ray was an exceptional man who was devoted to his family and the common good.

He quietly touched everyone he met. He leaves his wife of almost 50 years, Suzanne. Three beloved children and their cherished spouses, Meeghan McLain and Joel Antolini of Yarmouth, ME, David and Anne Connelly McLain of North Yarmouth, ME, Simon McLain and Sarah Stock of Cambridge, MA. Clarence “Palmo” Palmore Sr., age 77, born Dec. 13, 1938, in Birmingham, AL. He went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 21, 2016.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley I. Palmore; one son, Anthony April; his parents, Will and Nelia Palmore; his brothers, Willie Lee Palmore and George Palmore; and his sisters, Daisy Brown, Louise Palmore and Carrie B. Caldwell.

Severina Soto (nee Munoz), age 99, of Rockdale, passed away peacefully, Saturday, March 26, 2016, with her loving family at her side. She had been blessed to spend nearly her entire 99 years at home, spending only a short time under hospice care at Sunnyhill Nursing Home.

Born Nov. 8, 1916, in Guadalajara, Mexico, she was a Rockdale resident for over 66 years, and was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rockdale. Severina was known for her delicious and authentic Mexican cooking, and loved entertaining and serving the family dinners. She had a special place in her heart for mariachi music, and will be remembered for her gardening skills and her beautiful flowers.

Preceded by her husband of over 50 years, Librado Soto (1986); her daughter, Mary Boyd; her parents; three brothers; eight sisters; and one grandson in infancy.

Survived by two sons, Gabriel (Marian) Soto of Joliet and Henry (Lynn) Soto of Morris; two daughters, Mary Ellen Soto of Joliet and Mary Esther (Wesley G.) Denis Vardal, age 81, of Joliet, passed away peacefully, Sunday, March 27, 2016, at home with his family at his side.

Denis was born April 20, 1934, in Mykonos, Greece, to Kosta and Kalliopi (Xidakis) Vardalahos, and was adopted later in life by Yanni Koukas, who was Kalliopi’s second husband.

He came to the United States in 1953, by boat in search of his brother, George, who emigrated two years earlier.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. Following the war, he founded Vardal Engineering Supply, which he owned and operated since 1958. He was a member of Rotary International and the Rotary bowling team.

Denis was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, and became like an adoptive father and grandfather to all he met.

He was personable, loving and accepting, and left a lasting impression on everyone.

Denis was a brilliantly passionate man with so many interests. First and foremost was his newest granddaughter, Danira, who rarely left his lap. On sunny days, he could be found driving

his Alfa Romeo. He loved beating challengers at cards, backgammon and Jeopardy. He was a quiet and patient man who appreciated traveling to new and exotic places but always returning to his homeland, Mykonos, for the people, dancing, food and fun.

Surviving are his three loving daughters, Denise (Mark) Baker of Joliet, Debra (Vasillios Korodimos) Vardal of Arachova, Greece, and Dina Vardal of Joliet; three beloved grandchildren, Danira Aiginiti, Alexandros Aiginiti and Danira Vardal; niece, Laura Vardal; and nephew, Paul (Marinela) Vardal.

Preceded in death by his wife, Danira (Corso) Vardal (Feb. 13, 2001); his parents; one brother, George (Sandra) Vardal; two sisters in childhood; and his niece, Sande Vardal.

CHICAGO – The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday dashed one of Rod Blagojevich’s last hopes to reduce his 14-year prison sentence by refusing to hear the former Illinois governor’s appeal of his remaining corruption convictions, including his attempt to sell an appointment to the vacant Senate seat once occupied by President Barack Obama.

In so doing, the justices let stand a July ruling by the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago that the Chicago Democrat crossed the line when he sought money – usually campaign cash – in exchange for naming someone to fill Obama’s seat. The justices did not explain their decision.

The lower court had handed Blagojevich a largely symbolic victory by tossing five of his 18 convictions and said he should be resentenced on the 13 remaining counts. No resentencing date has been set, but it’s likely to happen this year. In its ruling last year, the 7th Circuit said that even with the dropped counts factored in, Blagojevich’s 14year sentence still may be fair.

The former governor’s wife, Patti Blagojevich, said in a written statement Monday that she and the couple’s two children were “incredibly disappointed.”

Emanuel names interim top cop with eye on challenges

CHICAGO – Eddie Johnson didn’t apply to become Chicago’s police chief, but his appointment as interim superintendent in line for the top job could address many of the issues facing Mayor Rahm Emanuel and a city reeling from a police shooting scandal.

After firing the previous superintendent over the shooting, Emanuel has searched for a replacement during a spike in violent crime, low department morale and intensified scrutiny of police shootings – in particular the death of

Fitch lowers Chicago credit rating to 1 step above junk

CHICAGO – Chicago’s credit rating has been downgraded to one step above junk grade by Fitch Ratings after the Illinois Supreme Court struck down Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s reform plan for two city pensions.

Fitch lowered Chicago’s rating from BBB+ to BBB- on Monday, increasing the cost of borrowing.

Fitch said it believes Thursday’s ruling “was among the worst of the possible

The request for the Supreme Court to consider Blagojevich’s appeal was a long shot. The high court hears only around 80 cases a year out of more than 10,000 requests and typically accepts cases that raise weighty and divisive legal issues.

In their 83-page petition asking the Supreme Court to hear the appeal, defense attorneys argued that the line between the legal and illegal trading of political favors was blurred, potentially making elected officials everywhere subject to prosecution for cutting political deals.

In its July ruling, the 7th Circuit said Blagojevich broke the law when he sought money for naming someone to Obama’s old seat. But it tossed counts linked to him asking for a Cabinet seat for himself. It said secretly trading favors based on politicians’ executive powers was a legitimate way to get things done for constituents.

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Police shot a man on Monday after he pulled a weapon at a U.S. Capitol checkpoint as spring tourists thronged Washington, authorities said. The suspect was previously known to police.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital, and a female bystander also suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.

Capitol Chief of Police Matthew R. Verderosa declined to confirm reports that the suspect was the same man who was arrested last October for disrupting House proceedings, yelling he was a “Prophet of God.” That man, 66-year-old Larry Dawson of Tennessee, was issued a “stay away order” by D.C. Superior Court in October, telling him to keep away from the Capitol grounds, court documents show.

The U.S. Capitol was on lockdown for about an hour Monday and the White House also was briefly locked down. As the capital teemed with spring tourists in town to view the cherry blossoms, staff members and visitors to the Capitol were rushed into offices and told to shelter in place.

“We do believe this is an act of a single person who has frequented the Capitol grounds before and there is no reason to believe that this is anything more than a criminal act,” Verderosa told reporters. He said it was unclear how many officers fired their guns. Initial reports had said an officer was injured but that proved

wrong. Verderosa said the suspect’s vehicle had been found on Capitol grounds and was being seized.

The police chief said the suspect was undergoing surgery but provided no information on his condition. Later Monday, George Washington University Hospital spokeswoman Susan Griffiths said it had treated one patient from the Capitol incident for minor injuries and planned to release the patient shortly, but she did not identify the person.

Monday’s event unfolded with Congress on recess and lawmakers back in their districts.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., issued a statement thanking Capitol Police, as did other congressional leaders. “This evening our thoughts and prayers are with all those who faced danger today,” Ryan said.

The sprawling Capitol Visitors Center where the shooting occurred remained closed into the evening as the incident was being investigated, while the Capitol itself and nearby office buildings reopened.

Visitors were turned away from the Capitol in the immediate aftermath of the shooting as emergency vehicles flooded the street and the plaza on the building’s eastern side.

Police, some carrying long guns, cordoned off the streets immediately around the building.

Cathryn Leff of Temecula, California, in town to lobby with the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, said she was going through security at the main entrance to the Capitol Visitors Center when police told people to leave immediately.

It’s almost impossible to make a deal with somebody who won’t accept reality.

And that’s been the case in Illinois for more than a year, as Gov. Bruce Rauner has made one politically unrealistic demand after another while refusing to negotiate a budget until those demands were met, all the while blaming the entire impasse on House Speaker Michael Madigan’s intransigence.

Because the public debate is so wrapped up in partisanship and ideology, it’s been tough for a large segment of the population to wrap its collective mind around what’s really been going on. Many see this fight as the “new, good” Rauner versus the “old, bad” Madigan. While that argument certainly has plenty of merit, it’s not nearly the entire story.

It takes two to tango, and the truth is, and has always been, that Rauner doesn’t even have enthusiastic support among legislative Republicans for a big chunk of his “Turnaround Agenda,” particularly his demands which are opposed by labor unions. His complete agenda cannot pass both legislative chambers no matter who the House Speaker is.

After what happened the day after the March primary election, however, Rauner’s obvious inability to accept some stark political realities might finally help more folks understand what

There is no doubt Rauner had a bad March 15. While he wasn’t directly involved in Speaker Madigan’s Democratic primary, there’s zero doubt the people who funded Madigan’s opponent were friendly to the governor’s interests. They made the campaign a referendum on Madigan’s entire career, and Madigan won handily.

The same money conduit Rauner used to fund other races, Dan Proft, somehow came up with $1.3 million in cash via a “dark money” group to give directly to Rep. Ken Dunkin, D-Chicago. All that other Raunerite money ($1.6 million) spent on Dunkin’s behalf didn’t just appear out of nowhere, either. And nobody really believes that the Illinois Chamber decided without prompting to all of a sudden run an additional million-dollar TV ad supporting Dunkin (who had one of the lowest Chamber ratings of any state legislator) without first consulting its own board of directors. That race became a very public referendum on Rauner, but Dunkin ended up winning

just 32 percent of the vote. Oops.

And, of course, there’s state Sen. Sam McCann, R-Plainview. Rauner personally endorsed McCann’s GOP opponent Bryce Benton, funneled millions of dollars into Benton’s race, both via Proft and through a $50,000 contribution from himself, and personally campaigned with Benton in the days leading up to the election. He threw the kitchen sink at McCann, with a boatload of cash spent to make the race about how McCann was Speaker Madigan’s “favorite senator.” McCann won by more than five percentage points. That’s a solid Rauner defeat in anyone’s book.

Everyone with even semi-honest eyes could see that Rauner was a big loser. Yes, he won several other primary races, but he basically steamrolled a bunch of unprepared amateurs with overwhelming financial resources and (in most cases) viciously negative ads.

Without a doubt it’s important to win those little races (Madigan himself does it a lot), but the marquee contests against formidable foes – who are far more like the legislative Democrats Rauner will face in November – most definitely went south.

And, yet, there he was, claiming via news release that Madigan was the primary election’s real loser, even though all of Madigan’s candidates won.

“There were many races last night where special interests backed by Speaker Madigan failed to defeat Republican incumbents and candidates who support Governor Rauner’s call for structural reforms,” his post-election news release bellowed.

Somehow, in Rauner’s mind, it’s Madigan’s fault that some Republican hopefuls with a smidgeon of union backing lost their races to Rauner’s heavily financed candidates.

The excuse I heard afterward was that Madigan had issued his own news release pointing out the governor’s losses and the governor felt he needed to respond. OK, I get that. Madigan didn’t have to rub Rauner’s nose in the previous day’s humiliations. But has nobody ever heard of taking the high road, or at least a road which exists in the real world?

Like I said at the beginning, accepting political reality is not this governor’s strong suit. If that wasn’t abundantly clear before the primary election, it surely became clear the day after.

And this governmental impasse ain’t ever gonna end until that stark fact of life changes.

To the Editor: The real story regarding Pilcher Park is the proposed plan to remove a section of an existing road that allows citizens who cannot walk to experience the deep forest. Disability advocates have been working with the Joliet Park District Board since last summer to make them aware of the hardship this proposal would pose. The board has been provided with the names of several experts on accessibility in public parks.

An individual, who we did not recommend, reviewed aerial photos of three possible renovations to the park. His report stated that “The trails shown would ‘likely’ meet [accessibility] requirements.”

Nearly 26 years after the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law, “likely” is unacceptable. The discussion regarding materials for trails simply indicates that their consultant engineer

dards that are mandated under the ADA. In addition to the possible removal of a section of a road, the district needs to conduct a full and thorough accessibility review of Pilcher Park. The district must do likewise for all of its facilities.

The Will County Forest Preserve District has done a fabulous job of ensuring access to all citizens. It is past time for the Joliet Park District to follow suit.

Wildcats optimistic after winning opener

cherron@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Although Plainfield Central’s boys volleyball team graduated most of its starters from last season, don’t expect coach Alex Hurlburt to view this as a rebuilding year.

The Wildcats coach hopes to complement returnee Wes Rogman with a group of newcomers who not only have potential, but also are quick learners.

They displayed some of their ability in Monday’s season opener against Joliet Central. The host Wildcats held

off a determined Steelmen squad in the opener before finishing off the twogame sweep to claim a 25-18, 25-14 nonconference victory.

“Noah Randall ran our offense the past two years and Gage Wuestenfeld was a powerful outside, so we lost a lot of big contributors,” Hurlburt said.

“This is a younger team, which is exciting. I don’t think we’re necessarily an underdog, but maybe we’ll be thought of a little lower than we have been in the past. But I’m kind of excited to prove people wrong. One of the things I enjoy most about coaching is winning

games that people don’t expect you to.

“I anticipate that we’re going to surprise a lot of people because we have new guys and short guys, but I think that we’re going to do well and today was a great start in that direction.

We’ve made it clear that we’re going to win games by being scrappy and defensive and not letting the other team get easy points. My assistant, Eric McCarthy, and I have coached a lot of people, and I’m impressed by how many of these guys on this team learn quickly.”

After watching his squad do some good things in last weekend’s Joliet

West Tournament, Steelmen coach Zak Krumlinde was hoping for more of the same against the Wildcats. But with one starter already away on a band trip, the Steelmen received a tough break when middle Brayden Thompson suffered an injury as warmups were winding down.

Despite losing another starter for the match, the Steelmen put up a good fight throughout much of the first set before too many unforced errors started to catch up with them.

JOLIET – With more than month left before players report for training camp, the Joliet Slammers roster is already starting to take shape. With the help of some new additions to the roster, the team looks to improve on last year’s 42-54 record.

Roderick “Rock” Shoulders is a fiveyear veteran of professional baseball.

The first baseman comes to the Slammers after playing in the Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers minor league system. In more than 300 career games, Shoulders has 45 homers and 66 doubles. In 2015, he made it to Triple-A Round Rock as a Rangers’ prospect.

David Carver will be another addition to the pitching staff. As a former Brewers farmhand, he will provide the flexibility of starting games or pitching in relief when needed.

Chris Riopedre, is a second baseman/shortstop that will look to provide some stability at the middle infield positions. He was drafted by the Nationals in the 23rd round out of East Tennessee State.

Dakota Freese is a right-handed pitcher who went 7-1 with a 2.66 ERA during his time at Des Moines Area Community College. He possesses a fastball that is in the low to mid-90s.

Joliet West hopes to surprise people this year

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – You know a program is in good shape when it graduates a lot of key players one year and has enough talent coming back to follow up with another successful season.

That’s just what Joliet West’s softball squad hopes to demonstrate this year after several players from last season’s 22-10 team saw their high school careers come to an end.

Tigers coach Heather Suca led her program to three-straight winning campaigns and has averaged 23 victories over the past four years, so it’s not surprising that the 1999 West graduate would be anticipating another strong season.

Suca likes how close this year’s team is and appreciates its competitive nature. Those two qualities should help the Tigers as they try to claim their third regional title in five years.

“One of our strongest things is our team chemistry and our fight,” Suca said. “We’ve gotten behind in some games, but we kept fighting and we’re never done. The girls kept talking and helping each other out. This is a young-

Some of West’s top returning players include seniors Ariana Liceaga (middle infield) and Kelsey Warren (outfield), juniors Madi Mulder (third base, catcher), Kiley Robb (pitcher, infield) and DeShonte Smith (catcher, first base, third base) and sophomores Kristen Ames (outfield) and Sidney Budzinski (pitcher, first base).

With a lot of players back who contributed in significant ways a year ago, as well as the good camaraderie on the squad, there’s plenty of optimism that West will enjoy a good season.

“I think that we have a lot of energy this year,” Robb said. “We have a lot of returners but we also have a lot of new people, so it’s a nice mix. Everyone’s really positive and working hard. I feel like no one really expects much from us this year, and we want to be the underdog.

“We’ve all been friends for years, so we’ve already jelled perfectly. I like how that we stay up, no matter what the score is. Everyone keeps talking

and no one gets down, but if someone does, someone picks them right back up. I think that we just have to trust the process.”

The Tigers realize the season is a building process, so it’s not about where they are now, but where they intend to be when the playoffs begin.

But based on how close the team is and the players’ desire to succeed, it’s easy to see how West could be successful.

“There’s no reason why we can’t do great this year,” Ames said. “We’re all working hard and we’re determined.

There’s a process to this whole system and we’re all trying to play for each other out there. We’re looking past individuals and see that if someone is down, I’m going to get her back up because we’re teammates and we’re going to push through this together.

“Since we’re all close, it makes things a lot easier. You want to play good for your teammates and when you’re on the field, you can stay loose with them because you have the same goal in mind. We’re all trying to focus to win but also enjoy yourself while you’re on the field. We have a lot of Tiger pride and go hard in every game and expect a lot from each other.”

JOLIET – When the Joliet Township co-op arrangement ended after the 2010 season, assuring that Central and West would finally have individual programs, there figured to be some growing pains, especially competing in the rugged SouthWest Suburban Conference.

One group which saw that firsthand was Joliet Central’s softball program, which was at a distinct disadvantage competing against programs in a league that featured many teams who have enjoyed a lot of success in the sport.

But despite the adversity, coach Erin Douglas has done her best to make her Steelwomen teams as good as they can be.

While the record might not reflect all of the progress that’s been made, Joliet Central’s program has definitely gotten better over the past few years.

Now Douglas and her current squad hope all of the tough times they’ve been through and their hard work result in their best season yet as they conclude play in the SWSC and prepare for next year’s move to their new league, the Southwest Prairie Conference.

“This is a good group of girls,” Douglas said. “They started off the season discussing that they want to make sure that they stay together as a unit. It’s not about what they need, but what the team needs this year, and I think that will definitely help us be successful. Last year we competed with a lot more teams, even though we may not have had the winloss record.

“The girls would definitely like to show people what we’re capable of.

These girls hang out on the weekends together and have sleepovers and do what they need to to get to know each other on a different level, and I think that’s helped push us to the next level of competing.”

One thing that Douglas is really excited about is the enthusiasm that newcomers to the school have shown to her softball program.

“This year we had almost 50 girls try out for the freshman team, and that’s a first for us,” Douglas said.

“But I think that’s a testament to the work that these girls have been doing. It’s showing other girls at the school or new kids that softball is a sport that you want to play. So hopefully, we’ll keep developing more talent and we’ll keep moving on up.”

“I think that we have a great group of girls,” Gawenda said. “This year we especially feel like we get along and we work together as a team and I think that’s one of the most important things. When we can communicate with each other, plays get made on the field. So far in practice and in our games, we’ve done outstanding.

“I’ve been on varsity for four years and just being with this group, I can tell that it will be an amazing season.

I expect to win a lot of games and have a better record than what we’ve had before. I think that we have the skill, we can all hit and field the ball, but we need to communicate and pick each other up as a team and that will

help us a lot this year.”

The Steelwomen are not only a determined group, but they’re also close and those two qualities figure to benefit them when times start getting tough.

“I really like that this group seems like it never gives up,” Fischer said.

“Even if we get down on ourselves, because we communicate so well, we pick each other back up, and I really think that that’s a key factor that keeps us together. We are in a tough conference, but I feel like we’re underestimated a lot because our record hasn’t been so good.

“But I think this year, we’re really going to turn some heads. This year we have something that we haven’t had in the past, which is our communication and that we’re comfortable with each other. We have a lot of trust, since we know how each of us will operate on the field.”

Syracuse’s Final Four run a shocker

The Associated Press When the word “Syracuse” popped up on the bracket for the first time, most of the so-called experts were crying “foul,” not shouting “Final Four.”

So much for that.

Coach Jim Boeheim’s “I Told You So” tour will travel all the way to Houston.

The 10th-seeded Orange became only the fourth double-digit seed to make the Final Four. They’ll be joined by a blue blood (North Carolina), a scrappy squad with no stars (Villanova) and the team with the tournament’s best player in Buddy Hield (Oklahoma).

Though it’s been hard to find many genuine surprises in this, a season full of unpredictable twists and turns, Syracuse making the Final Four would certainly fit that category. This was a program under duress, one that lost Boeheim for nine games early this season while he served punishment for NCAA violations.

This was a program that gave St. John’s one of its eight wins this season; a program that dropped five of six heading into Selection Sunday. Hardly any bracketologist had the Orange making it

into the field of 68. The NCAA selection committee didn’t agree. And shortly after Syracuse beat Dayton, 70-51, in the first round, Boeheim was at his cranky best, saying, anybody “that said we didn’t deserve to be in obviously doesn’t know anything about basketball.”

Syracuse trailed Virginia by as many as 16 before Boeheim switched out of his trademark 2-3 zone and into a full-court press.

That helped the Orange outscore the Cavaliers, 29-8, down the stretch to win, 68-62.

“We had a lot of doubters,” freshman Tyler Lydon said. “A lot of people who believed we shouldn’t even be in this tournament. I’m sure there are still a lot of people who think that. But we know what we can do as a team and that’s all that matters.”

Syracuse plays Saturday’s late game against the Tar Heels, who beat Notre Dame, 88-74. It’s a matchup of ACC teams; North Carolina has beaten Syracuse twice this season.

The first semifinal pits Oklahoma against Villanova. Oklahoma won a meeting in December, 78-55.

turnaround at Hofstra before getting the Villanova job in 2001. He has taken the Wildcats to the tournament 11 of the past 12 seasons.

The Star: The stat sheet says there isn’t one. But let’s go with senior guard Ryan Arcidiacono, a 12-point-a-game scorer who celebrated his 22nd birthday by making four clutch free throws to seal Saturday’s win over Kansas.

The Story: Seeded 1 or 2 the two years before this, the Wildcats didn’t make it out of the first weekend either season.

Now, they’re back at the Final Four for

The Star: Michael Gbinije leads the team at 17.6 points a game. But the star, really, is that ultra-nuanced 2-3 zone that Boeheim wins with in an era in which most sought-after recruits have zero interest in those kind of details.

The Story: So many to choose from, most centered on this team’s ability to get to the Final Four when nobody gave it a chance.

NORTH CAROLINA The Coach: Roy Williams, now taking

the Tar Heels to the Final Four for the fourth time, to match the number of times he reached it with Kansas.

The Star: Brice Johnson, averaging nearly 17 points and 101/2 rebounds.

The Story: Only No. 1 seed to make the Final Four. The program is in its record 19th Final Four, but first since 2009. No surprise considering the Tar Heels won the ACC regular-season and tournament titles, and that conference had four teams in the Elite Eight.

Teague, Hawks hold off Bulls

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Jeff Teague scored 26 points, including two free throws with just over six seconds to play, and the surging Atlanta Hawks fought off a furious Bulls’ rally for a 102-100 win Monday night.

It was the fourth straight win for the Hawks. Though the Bulls mounted a dramatic late comeback, they continued a late-season swoon, losing their fourth straight.

The Bulls were down as much as 15 in

the second half, but stormed back in the fourth quarter and were down three with the ball with eight seconds to play. The Bulls’ Mike Dunleavy missed a layup, however, and fouled Teague, whose free throws sealed Atlanta’s ninth win in 10 games.

Dennis Schroder and Al Horford each added 14 points for Atlanta. Paul Millsap had 11 rebounds and Horford added 10 for the Hawks, who completed a season sweep of the Bulls.

Derrick Rose had 20 points for the Bulls.

Kyle Korver had 12 points and Millsap had 11 for Atlanta.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Charlie Blackmon, Trevor Story and Carlos Gonzalez hit consecutive home runs off John Danks before he settled down and the White Sox responded with four homers in an 11-7 victory Monday over the Colorado Rockies.

Carlos Sanchez homered twice and drove in four and Jose Abreu and Matt Davidson each had three hits and a homer for the Sox, who have an MLB-high 46 home runs this spring.

Danks entered with an 11-inning scoreless streak over two starts. The lefty gave up three hits to Blackmon but retired 12 of the final 13 batters in a six-inning stint.

It was bad enough for this 55-yearold father of six children to learn he had mucosal melanoma, but to lose an eye?

So how can you cut calories? First, eat smaller portions. Also, substitute lower-calorie alternatives for high-calorie foods.

For example, have grilled fish and steamed vegetables for dinner instead of a plate of pasta.

It also helps to stick with a regular eating schedule. Plan meals and snacks that are no more than four hours apart to help keep you from becoming too hungry and overeating.

I have known many patients who were able to control their Type 2 diabetes with just diet and exercise. They did not need medicine. Diet and exercise really are that effective.

Dear Dr. K: I recently was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. My doctor said the best thing I can do is to lose weight. Why? Dear Reader: Type 2 diabetes usually starts after a person becomes an adult. It is by far the most common type of diabetes. It has been clear for many years people who are overweight are at much greater risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. In the past 20 years, research discoveries have begun to explain why.

We used to think of fat as an inert layer of insulation. In recent years, we’ve discovered the special cells inside fat (“fat cells”) are not inert at all: They are little hormone-producing factories. The hormones they make travel through the blood to the brain and other organs. They influence a person’s appetite and metabolism. They also influence the amount of sugar in the blood. Diabetes, of course, is marked by high levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood and urine.

Your doctor’s recommendation is right in line with guidelines from the American Diabetes Association (ADA). They urge all people newly diagnosed with diabetes to lose weight as the first step to controlling their blood sugar. The best way to lose weight? By eating more healthfully and exercising more.

A blood test called HbA1c estimates average blood sugar levels over the past two or three months. People with diabetes should aim for an HbA1c level of less than 7 percent. Losing weight and exercising more can decrease your HbA1c level by one or two percentage points. That might not sound like much, but a two-point reduction in HbA1c can put your blood sugar in the normal range, dramatically reducing your chances of developing a diabetes-related health problem.

Dear Abby: DEAR ABBY My 29-year-old brother died Jeanne unexpectedly last Phillips month. He left behind a wife and 1-year-old son.

Blackwood is a useful slam tool.

However, inexperienced players rely on it too heavily. First, you should use it only when you are confident that you have the values for a slam and are just double checking that you are not missing two aces for a small slam, or one ace (or perhaps a king) for a grand slam.

Blackwood can also be unhelpful when you have a void. Look at today’s South hand. He opens two clubs and rebids two spades over partner’s two-diamond response. When partner raises to three spades, promising support and some values, South could jump to four no-trump, but after partner admits to one ace, what would he do? Does North have the useless heart ace or the invaluable diamond ace? South won’t know.

Instead, South should use control-bidding. Over three spades, he continues with four clubs, showing a first-round control in that suit (ace or void) and expressing slam interest.

Here, responder will continue with four diamonds, telling South about his ace. South could then jump to seven spades, because real bridge players don’t use Blackwood! Or he could cautiously check that partner really does have the ace. (Yes, South has a possible club loser, but, if necessary, he hopes to discard clubs from dummy on his diamonds and ruff the club six on the board.)

Here, after West leads, say, the heart king against seven spades, South ruffs and cashes the spade ace.

When East discards, declarer cashes his top clubs, ruffs the club six on the board, draw trumps, and claims.
