Initiatives to preserve open space in or near urban areas led to the establishment of large designed parks. By the late 19th century, increasingly industrialized eastern cities were growing at a dramatic pace.

Desires to protect public water supplies and more open space near cities led to the 19th century urban parks movement and the creation of large “country” parks in or near many urban areas.

Based on Romantic principles, these early parks took their inspiration from similar designs produced by English landscape gardeners in the 18th century.

They were often several hundred acres in size bringing rural or pastoral scenery to the urban centers.

Design elements typically included broad meadows and natural picturesque features such as rocky outcroppings, woodlands, lawns and thick border vegetation. Paths or roads provided places for strolling or horseback riding.

By the beginning of the 20th century, Joliet residents began enjoying leisure time in the many fine parks around the city, including Highland Park, Pilcher Park (East Park), Higginbotham Woods and Nowell Park, to name a few.

To the south of Joliet, near Rockdale, is Bush Park, or what is now known as West Park. The park was named for Frank Bush, who was engaged in cattle dealing and the wholesale meat business in Joliet with his brother, Henry. Frank, who came to Illinois around 1854, owned a 130-acre farm near the outskirts of the city.

Bush died Nov. 10, 1897, and the following year 40 acres of his farm were sold to the city of Joliet, and the park was named in his honor. For a time, his wife, Harriet, who still owned 90 acres of land adjoining the new park, acted as the park’s superintendent. This purchase, along with the purchase of 45 acres that would become Highland Park, marked the beginning of the public park system in Joliet.

OLD POSTCARD IMAGES SOUGHT FOR PUBLICATION David Belden is a history teacher at Minooka Community High School and currently is publishing local postcard books with Arcadia Publishing in his local history classes. He and his students are looking for old Joliet photos and postcards, and images from Joliet’s parks, for a new publication.

For many Joliet residents, this beautiful 40-acre park was known as a wonderful place to picnic and enjoy a variety of activities for nature lovers. Besides the rustic bridges and springhouse, the park was a wonderful backdrop to see the changing seasons, walk the long winding roads and footpaths, play baseball, dance in the pavilion or attend a concert.

In time, the park would offer three separate playground areas, tennis courts, an open-air theater, a football field and several picnic areas.

Although West Park still is enjoyed today by numerous visitors, much of the northern sections of the park were lost with the construction of Interstate 80 through Joliet in the late 1960s.

No shortage of spring break activities for Joliet, Plainfield students

JOLIET – Parents, have no fear.

Youth groups such as the George Werden Buck Boys and Girls Club, local YMCA branches and the Warren Sharpe Community Center are open for business this week with the arrival of spring break.

Starting Monday, students from Joliet and Plainfield school districts will be taking a weeklong break from school, but there are places to go and a wide range of activities to keep busy while parents are at work.

The Boys and Girls Club at 226 E. Clinton St. in Joliet will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Extended spring break hours are included in the $20 school-year membership fee, said Kahlil Diab, the center’s executive director.

“Every time schools are out, the club is open,” Diab said. “The most dangerous time for kids to be out on the streets is when school is out and parents are working. That’s why we’re open.”

The nonprofit’s in-house basketball league – sponsored by Buffalo Wild Wings – will hold its championship game later this week, Diab said. Everyone is looking forward to it, he said.

“The little kids, they love it,” Diab said.

Volunteer tutors from University of St. Francis in Joliet and Lewis University in Romeoville will be on hand for supplementary reading and math assistance, which is required during a portion of the day, Diab said. Children also can play board games, billiards, arts and crafts and video games, he said.

Warren Sharpe Community Center

On Joliet’s south side, children at the Warren Sharpe Community Center will stay busy this spring break tending to the center’s ever-expanding garden. The center predominantly serves children from Edna Keith Elementary and Washington Junior High schools.

Warren Sharpe – 454 S. Joliet St. – is closed Monday, but will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, said Kay Bolden, the center’s executive director.

While Warren Sharpe doesn’t have any additional spring break activities or programs planned, the place will be open for children to come by. Bolden said she could use some help in the garden.

“If we’ve got kids in here, they’ll be outside working,” Bolden said. “We’ve

YMCA clubs

The Galowich and Smith Family YMCA branches in Joliet and the C.W. Avery Family YMCA in Plainfield are open only to paying members, but parents can print out a one-day guest pass and use the facility during open swim and gym hours, said Dori Fugate, community engagement director for the Greater Joliet Area YMCA. “We serve a lot of [District 86] kids,” Fugate said. “If mom and dad are working, kids can come here for a fun time.”

Along with open gym and swim, members also can attend water polo and dancing camps, she said.

Carolyn Hamilton, vice president of marketing for the Greater Joliet Area YMCA, said the two Joliet branches and the Plainfield branch will hold the Y’s all-day “Days Out of School” program.

When school isn’t in session, children grades kindergarten through eighth grade can sign in as early as 7 a.m. and leave as late as 6 p.m.

Pilcher Park debate includes clashing views

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Disability advocates and naturalists were at times at odds at last week’s public hearing on future plans for Pilcher Park.

More than 100 people attended the meeting March 21, voicing dozens of comments that the Joliet Park District Board will have to sort out before making a decision on changes to the road and trail system at Pilcher Park.

The board expects to make a decision at its April 25 meeting.

The hearing last week was called at the insistence of disability advocates who said the board had not taken into account Americans with Disabilities Act requirements and accessibility issues.

At the same time, the board heard from a University of St. Francis professor who contended less human access throughout the park could be an improvement.

“I want to speak for a group of organisms who can’t speak for themselves,” said Bill Bromer, a biology professor who drew attention to the impact of access on flora and fauna in the park. “I

am disgusted by the numbers of trails and roads that bisect this park.”

Bromer brings students to the park to study nature and said most of the invasive species they find are along the roads that go through the park.

His view, however, appeared to be outnumbered by those who favored road access.

The current plan is to convert about a quarter-mile section of the Upper Loop road that goes around the Pilcher Park Nature Center into a walking trail. The Flowing Well Road that enters the park off Gougar Road would be closed to the public but remain an access road for park maintenance.

It wasn’t only disability advocates who objected to the idea of limiting vehicle access within the park.

“I enjoy driving through this park all the time,” Dale Hasselbring said. “It takes my mind off my worries. But I don’t have time to walk the trails.”

A number of disability advocates spoke against the plan.

Elaine Sommer, board president at the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living, said the plan to reduce driving access “is a great hardship for those of us who can’t do the trails.”

Sommer also urged board members to try pushing a wheelchair on the park trails.

Bromer, however, was not alone in suggesting less vehicle access would be a good thing.

Rita Renwick, president of the Will County Chapter of the Illinois Audubon Society, said her organization supports the park district plan.

“Our group sees this as an opportunity to eliminate noise, exhaust and litter from the area,” Renwick said.

Naturalists were not the only ones arguing that fewer vehicles through the park could be an improvement. A few speakers said the tires, TVs and other items dumped in Pilcher Park come there by car or truck. However, some speakers argued for better security to keep the garbage out.

One message was clear by the end of the hearing: A lot of people care about Pilcher Park. The Nature Center community room was overflowing with people.

“This is a beautiful, beautiful park,” said Susan Rank, a board member at the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living. “Where there is emotion, there is ownership and care.”

JOLIET – Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots has announced in a news release that on Tuesday, new party and independent candidates can pick up and start circulating petitions for the Nov. 8 general election.

Petitions also will be available for one four-year term trustee seat for the Lockport Heights Sanitary District.

Petitions and all necessary forms, including signature requirements, will be available at the County Clerk’s Office, 302 N. Chicago St., Joliet, as well as at www.thewillcountyclerk.com.

Petitions for federal, state and judicial offices will be available from the State Board of Elections.

The first day to file petitions will be June 20. The last day will be June 27, and filing will end at 5 p.m. Petitions received by mail in the County Clerk’s Office before June 20 will be returned.

JTHS seeks volunteers to judge presentations

JOLIET – Joliet Township High School is seeking parents, community members, business representatives, educators and alumni to judge student U.S. history and world affairs presentations, according to a school district news release.

Students are researching a contemporary world issue or U.S. history event and will present a persuasive argument to each volunteer judge. There is no preparation or prior knowledge of history necessary to participate. All materials and instructions will be given to judges the day of the event.

Volunteers can donate as little as two hours or a whole day. They will be provided with a scoring sheet. Breakfast and lunch also will be provided.

Judges are needed at Joliet Central High School on May 10 for the History Fair and May 19 for the World-A-fair.

Joliet West High School judges are needed May 11 for the History Fair and May 20 for the World-A-fair.

Channahon residents, business honored Channahon Police Sgt. Steve Weiss was presented March 16 with the William Kennedy Officer of the Year award during the State of the Village address.

He was honored along with Dr. Patrick Minor of Minor Chiropractic and Health Care as citizen of the year and ComEd as business of the year.

Officer of the year

Weiss is a 22-year veteran with the Channahon Police Department, starting in 1993 as a patrolman. He’s held positions as evidence technician, firearms instructor, rifle instructor and field training officer, among others. He was promoted to sergeant in 1999.

Being a police officer is something Weiss always wanted to do, he said.

He credits his wife, Uli Weiss, whom he met when stationed in Germany in the U.S. Army, with supporting him all these years in police work. He missed out on a lot of soccer games and family events to do the job he loves.

“I always say the more important the event is, the less likely you are going to make it,” he said. “It’s very hard on the family.”

Weiss stopped to have a friendly chat about what was going on, but their stories and behavior didn’t add up. He called for backup and soon most of the police department was on the scene.

The men were arrested and were suspected in a string of other burglaries.

Weiss said he was just in the right place at the right time and credits the entire department.

Being awarded officer of the year is a humbling experience, he said.

“We have so many deserving people,” Weiss said. “It’s meant a lot to me.”

Dr. Patrick Minor had the same reaction after being chosen as the Amos Hayes Citizen of the Year.

“I am humbled and honored to have been chosen for this award,” Minor said.

Minor has served on the Channahon baseball board, coached baseball, been a member of the Channahon-Minooka Rotary for 12 years and is a past president, serves on the Three Rivers Festival board and is part of the Channahon Athletic Boosters.

Minor dedicated his award to all the volunteers he has worked with over the years and thanked community members he’s modeled himself after as a volunteer and good citizen.

“Channahon is an awesome community full of great people who volunteer to make it great for generations to come,” he said. “I love living here, I love working here, and I treasure all the people.”

Business of the year

ComEd was named the Fred Rittof/ George Sparagis Business of the Year.

ComEd has been in the community for years, but when it outgrew its facility, the company looked around and found that Channahon was where it wanted

to stay, External Affairs Director Jeff Hettrick said.

“To be honest, there was no better place than Channahon. It’s a perfect location,” Hettrick said.

ComEd bought the building next to its facility and rebuilt it to accommodate its overhead transmission group, which services high voltage lines from Chicago suburbs to Springfield and west to Peoria. It is the group that responded to the Coal City and Diamond tornadoes.

ComEd also kept the old building, which will become the company’s emergency control and command center. A mobile command center, which can house 25 staff, also is on the property.

Not only is the location convenient for ComEd, but village staff worked diligently to help them through the process of expanding and building, Hettrick said.

“We are proud to stay in Channahon,” Hettrick said. “ComEd is proud to accept this award.”

Renewal of the Federally Enforceable State Operating Permit Canal Terminal Company in Channahon Canal Terminal Company has applied to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to renew the federally enforceable state operating permit (FESOP) regulating air emissions from its storage tank and loading facility located at 23212 South Young Road in Channahon. The Illinois EPA has reviewed the application and made a preliminary determination that the application meets the standards for issuance and has prepared a draft permit for public review and comment.

The 1990 amendments to the Clean Air Act require potentially major sources of air emissions to obtain federally enforceable operating permits. A FESOP permit allows a source that is potentially major to take operational limits in the permit so that it is a non-major source. The permit will contain federally enforceable limitations that restrict the facility’s emissions to non-major levels. The permit will be enforceable by the USEPA, as well as the Illinois EPA.

Although his stage magic was amazing, Tom preferred “up close” magic, such as the magic he performed tableside.

“When you’re onstage, you can get by with anything,” Mary Frances said. “But when you’re right in front of someone, you have to know what you’re doing.”

Tom had the “gift of gab” and incorporated puns and distracting hand movements into a show where one “never knew what would happen.”

Through the years, Tom accumulated a wealth of paraphernalia and books about magic and illusions, Mary Frances said. Tom continued delighting audiences with his craft until he developed health problems in 2012, she added.

Mary Frances likened Tom’s passion for learning new tricks to pianists conquering new compositions.

“He practiced and practiced and practiced until it came naturally,” she said.

Tom was 82 when he died Dec. 28.

MORRIS – Tom “Mistini” Wilkinson said his best trick was making firemen disappear.

Sort of.

Mary Frances Wilkinson of Morris, Tom’s wife, chuckled as she recalled one of those annual Christmas parties at the Morris Fire Department where Tom performed his magic.

Just as Tom was about to begin, the fire alarm sounded. But the call of duty only delayed Tom’s magic show.

“He waited around until the firemen came back,” Mary Frances said.

A former math teacher for Morris Community High School, Tom even worked magic in the classroom. Tom, recalling his own high school days when he struggled with geometry and found a tutor to help him, always gave extra help to struggling students. He also devised ways they could earn extra credit, Mary Frances said.

But Tom didn’t stop there.

Tom used magic tricks to prove certain concepts. He inspired students to quickly complete assignments by promising a magic trick or two when their

The magician then gave Tom a book he had written about magic and instructed Tom to work on one of the illusions. The following year, the magician returned to the school and talked to Tom after the show to gauge his progress. Tom had mastered the illusion.

“Eventually, Tom went around southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois as his assistant,” Mary Frances said. “So he’s been doing magic since the fifth grade.”

The offer to teach at Morris Community High School also was a magical opportunity. The superintendent at the time had approached Northern Illinois University and asked for recommendations of past students who had majored in math, Mary Frances said.

The university had only one, Tom, who had minored in math. Tom returned to NIU for his master’s in math and then spent his education career teaching math in Morris.

“He liked the challenge,” Mary Frances said, adding that Tom also began the school’s computer lab.

In Morris, Tom’s magic career took flight. As “Mistini,” Tom performed at area restaurants and the school’s talent shows.

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A small fire contained in the wall between the bar and kitchen at Maria’s Ristorante & Pizzeria in Morris caused the restaurant to close early Saturday night.

However, it was able to reopen in time for Easter brunch. Owner Ozzie Dzelil said he and his staff served about 450 people.

“It was a good day,” Dzelil said.

The Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District responded to the call and extinguished the fire by 10:30

Dzelil was on the scene and said the restaurant would do what was needed to be ready to serve the Easter reservations. Dzelil said Sunday afternoon that the fire started in an electrical socket between the kitchen and the bar.

OBITUARIES MARGARITA AGUILERA Margarita Aguilera “Maggie,” age 88 years, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2016, while vacationing in San Salvador, El Salvador.

Born in Los Angeles, California, on June 6, 1927, the daughter of Martin and Josephine Aguiniaga.

She was retired from Rockdale Controls.

Member of the Joliet YMCA. Margarita enjoyed sewing, gardening and, most especially, spending time with all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her husband, Mario Aguilera; a son, George Aguilera; her parents; several brothers and sisters.

Lawrence E. Gardner, a native and longtime resident of Yorkville, passed away Thursday, March 24, 2016, at his home at the Inn at Willow Falls in Crest Hill. He was born March 23, 1927, a son of Morrison and Hilda Gardner.

The family extends special thanks to the staff and caregivers of the Inn at Willow Falls for their exceptional care and compassion and also to the Cancer Care Center staff at Rush Copley Hospital in Aurora for their friendly and caring service.

Lawrence, who was nicknamed Bum, was a 1945 graduate of Yorkville High School and served as a medic in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1947. He married Mary Joanne Trummel on April 28, 1951. He was a graduate of then Aurora College and earned graduate degrees from Northern Illinois University. He spent 30 years as a teacher and administrator in Millbrook and in the Yorkville School District where he served as teacher, principal and assistant superintendent. He retired from education in 1986 as principal of Bristol Elementary School.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich could soon learn whether the U.S. Supreme Court will hear an appeal of his conviction on charges of corruption that included an attempt to sell an appointment to President Barack Obama’s old Senate seat.

The 59-year-old Democrat had five of his 18 convictions thrown out in July 2015 and has asked the high court to overturn the remaining ones. He is

currently serving a 14-year prison sentence.

The Supreme Court justices deliberated Blagojevich’s petition Friday during a weekly case conference, the Chicago Tribune reported Sunday.

The court typically issues orders on the Monday after deliberating a petition. Decisions to not consider such petitions are usually noted without explanation.

In an 83-page filing, Blagojevich argues that the line between the legal

trading of political favors and bribery has become muddled, potentially exposing politicians everywhere to criminal charges.

The Supreme Court hears only about 80 cases annually out of more than 10,000 such requests. It typically accepts cases that raise significant legal issues, which is why the filing emphasizes what it calls the far-reaching implications of Blagojevich’s case.

The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals also grappled with the issue of

what is and isn’t corruption when it struck five of Blagojevich’s convictions in its July ruling. The three-judge panel determined that Blagojevich crossed that line when he sought money – often campaign cash – for naming someone to the U.S. Senate seat that Obama vacated when he became president. But the judges said he didn’t cross it by asking for a Cabinet seat for himself.

The panel also ordered a new sentencing hearing for Blagojevich, which has not yet been scheduled.

ROME – Police in southern Italy have arrested an Algerian man wanted by Belgian authorities for alleged involvement in a Belgium-based network which provided false IDs used by people implicated in the Paris and Brussels attacks, investigators said Sunday.

Djamal Eddine Ouali was arrested Saturday in the town of Bellizzi, outside of the port city of Salerno, said Luigi Amato, the head of Salerno police’s anti-terrorism squad. The Associated Press ISLAMABAD – A breakaway Pakistani faction of the militant Taliban group has claimed responsibility for an Easter Sunday bombing that killed 65 people in a park in the eastern city of Lahore that was crowded with Christians, including many children.

Ahsanullah Ahsan, spokesman for Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, told the Associated Press a suicide bomber with the faction deliberately targeted the Christian community.

The explosion took place near the children’s rides in Gulshan-e-Iqbal park local police chief Haider Ashraf said. He said the explosion appeared to have been a suicide bombing, but investigations were ongoing.

The attack killed 65 people and wounded over 300, said Deeba Shahnaz, a spokesman for Lahore rescue administration.

Punjab’s chief minister Shahbaz Sharif announced three days of mourning and pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice, said Zaeem Qadri, a spokesman for the provincial government.

The park was manned by police and private security guards, police chief Haider Ashraf said. “We are in a warlike situation and there is always a general threat but no specific threat alert was received for this place,” he said.

Schools and businesses in the city will remain closed on Monday, the city’s schools association and the Union of Lahore Trad-

ers said.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif held a meeting to assess the security situation in Lahore, according to a government statement. Pakistan’s army chief, Gen. Footage broadcast on local television stations showed chaotic scenes in the park, with people running while carrying children and cradling the wounded in their laps.

A witness, not identified by name on Pakistan’s Geo TV station, said he was heading toward a fairground ride with his wife and two children when he heard a huge bang and all four of them were thrown to the floor. A woman was shown crying while looking desperately for her missing 5-yearold son.

Joliet Catholic looks to build on last year’s success

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Some of the keys to success on the softball field are being solid both up the middle and in the infield, and that certainly applies to this year’s Joliet Catholic Academy team.

Coach Dave Douglas, who last season moved past the 500-win mark in his 25th year with the program, hopes the Angels’ strength both up the middle and in the infield, as well as getting contributions from others with experience, results in another successful season.

JCA made a nice playoff run and reached the sectional championship to finish 19-17 in 2015. It will try to cap-

ture consecutive regionals for the first time since 2010-11 and claim the program’s first sectional title since 1988, when the Angels represented St. Francis Academy.

The Angels have four-year starters on both the mound and behind the plate in pitcher Alyssa Callans and catcher Meghan Harrison. Also, two juniors in the infield are third-year starters, second baseman Reilly Jo Swanson and third baseman Paige Callans.

“We have a lot of girls back, so we’re trying to keep the idea of them not getting too high or too low,” Douglas said.

“Thirty-five games is a long season, so stay patient, keep working to get better and be ready for the playoffs, where we’ll see how far we can go. I think that

we’re going to hit the ball better than we have so we just need to make the routine plays.

“As we learned last year, injuries can become a big factor. So if we can stay away from that and have some consistency in our lineup, that will be big part of it, since you can play better defense. The girls have really jelled together as a team. Everyone seems to be getting along and is very supportive. So it’s been a real good group in terms of having team camaraderie, which can make a season. We’re all on the same page, so I’m hoping for good things.”

BLOOMINGTON – Three individuals and three relay teams from area schools claimed top honors in the boys competitions at Saturday’s Illinois Top Times indoor track and field meet at Illinois Wesleyan University, which is viewed as the indoor state championship.

Lockport’s Derrius Rodgers won the 60 (0:06.87) and was second in the 200 (0:22.32) while Lemont’s Chris Thompson took first in the 400 (0:49.42).

“We did really well last year and since we have a lot of the same players coming back and a couple of strong players coming in, I think that we’ll do really well this year,” Alyssa Callans said. “I think that we have really good chemistry and everyone gets along with each other and we all have the same goal in mind, which is that we want to do really well this year.

“I’m really excited to see how we’re going to hit this year, since we have some really good hitters. And our defense is also really strong, so we should have a strong team. I’m excited for this year.”

“I’m excited for this season,” Harrison said. “We’ve got a good group coming back from last year. We’re experienced and when the playoffs come, we know what it takes to get the job

done. We just had a team sleepover, so we’re doing more bonding this year because that’s really important for the team’s chemistry. We trust each other and have each others back.

“I like our explosive hitting and our tough defense. Everyone on the

field has a strong arm and we attack the ball on offense and that will help us throughout the season. We all just have to stay healthy and improve at every practice. We have to work even harder than last year in order to get farther.”

MINOOKA – This is Jeff Petrovic’s 13th season as Minooka’s head baseball coach.

He consistently has had good teams, and some have been a couple of rungs above that.

Unless he misses his guess, this edition of the Indians could rank with the best.

“I have not been as excited about a team like this since 2005 and 2006, with the exception that we don’t have that one big arm, at least not yet,” Petrovic said. “But Joe Butler absolutely could be that guy. A couple of major league teams are watching him closely, with the draft coming up.”

An all-area basketball player who will continue his baseball career at Illinois State, Butler is the No. 1 starter on the pitching staff that ultimately will determine how far the Indians go. Senior right-hander Brad VanAsdlen is the No. 2 and senior lefty Tyler Talbot is the No. 3. Three starting spots are all-important in the Southwest Prairie Conference, which features series each week on three consecutive days.

Petrovic estimates Butler’s fastball is in the 85 to 86 mph range consistently.

“He’s sneaky quick, and he has a plus curve and cutter,” Petrovic said.

“That makes his fastball look faster.”

VanAsdlen throws a nasty splitter.

“We got three innings in against Andrew, which is no slouch team, and Brad threw four ground balls that never never left the infield grass,” Petrovic said. “That’s how good his splitter was.”

If the staff – which will throw to junior catcher Nick Airola and senior Patrick Rumsey – delivers, this could be a quite a spring.

“This team has really, really great potential,” Petrovic said. “We will have great defense and a lot of pop 1 through 5 in the lineup We have depth in pitching, just not that one dominant arm that we have had with some of our better teams in the past, where you just knew when you threw him out there you were going to win.”

The defensive strength begins in the infield. Butler, who will play second base when he is not pitching, is a shortstop by trade. So is sophomore shortstop Hayden Laczynski, who begins his second varsity season at the position.

Sophomore Cherokee Lebeau, a transfer from Streator, is at third base.

Normally, two sophomores on the left side of the infield could be cause for concern. But not this time.

“Hayden hit about .380 last year, which was second on our team behind (Cristian) Sanchez,” Petrovic said. “We went into the year thinking he would be good defensively. We thought any we got offensively from him would be

extra. We thought we’d hide him in the 9-hole. He wound up being our leadoff man all year.

“I feel the sky is the limit for him.

It’s like in ‘06 when we had Cole Tyrell.

Hayden is a true five-tool player.”

And then there’s Lebeau.

“I know it’s early, but I’ve seen him for a month and a half now, albeit in the gym for a lot of it, and I’m sold,” Petrovic said. “The first time I saw him in the gym, I knew we were a good fit for him. He is a really solid player.”

The right-handed hitting Lebeau will bat fifth in Petrovic’s lineup, following Laczynski, center fielder Jon Butler, Joe Butler and junior first baseman Logan O’Brien.

“Cherokee has some power and is a good situational hitter, but what really has impressed me is his defense,” Petrovic said. “He has a great glove.

He’s smooth. And, he’s a great kid, very personable, and a great student.”

The Minooka outfield includes senior Brandon Rossiter, who also is the closer, in left field and senior Zach

Earls in right, flanking junior center fielder Jon Butler.

“You would have a hard time finding a spot where Jon can’t get to the ball,” Petrovic said of the younger Butler. “He has a chance to be the best outfielder we have had, and we’ve had some good ones. He’s already right there with them.”

After this season, Lebeau may move to second base, which he also can handle defensively.

“The good thing about having him at third this year is it will be easier to move Rossiter to left field and then if we make a late switch to bring Rossiter in to close, its easier to switch defensive players in left than at third,” Petrovic said. “We will be better defensively at third base and left field this way.”

The Indians have the strategic angles covered with quality. Now it’s a matter of executing.

“I love this team. It’s a great bunch of guys,” Petrovic said. “We’re in a much better place than we were last year at this time. I think we started off 3-10.”

The Tar Heels reached the Final Four for a record 19th time and the first since 2009, when they won the last of their five national championships.

Hot flashes can be treated Dear Dr. K: I’m afraid to take hormone therapy for my menopausal hot flashes. Are there any natural remedies that work?

Dear Reader: Natural remedies can help for hot flashes, but hormone therapy is helpful more often. For that reason, I’ll come back to the pluses and minuses of hormone therapy after answering your question.

Obviously, you know what hot flashes are like. However, for any readers who may not, here’s a description. Hot flashes are brief but intensely uncomfortable feelings of warmth followed by drenching perspiration. They’re common during menopause, but not all women get them.

Hot flashes can be accompanied by heart palpitations, dizziness or weakness. They can cause sleepless nights, followed by irritability and exhaustion during the day. At their worst, they really can interfere with a woman’s life.

There are traditional medicines other than hormone therapy that can help with hot flashes. Several drugs that usually are used to treat depression give relief of symptoms for some women. These drugs include paroxetine (approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat menopausal symptoms), venlafaxine, desvenlafaxine, citalopram and escitalopram.

The fact these drugs can be helpful does not mean hot flashes are a sign of depression. Instead, the drugs likely alter the brain chemistry that generates hot flashes.

Three other traditional medicines that also affect the chemistry of the brain can give symptom relief. These include gabapentin, pregabalin and clonidine.

Several non-medicinal treatments (such as isoflavones, phytoestrogens and black cohosh) may help, although different studies have come to different conclusions. The same is true for acupuncture and hypnosis.

flashes less severe or less frequent that don’t require either traditional medicines or “natural remedies”: • Drink a glass of cool water at the beginning of a hot flash.

• Drink six to eight glasses of water a day.

• Plunge your hands in cold water and pat them on your face, neck and chest when a hot flash starts.

• Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which make hot flashes more uncomfortable.

• Cut down on red wine, chocolate and aged cheeses. They contain a chemical that can trigger hot flashes.

• Don’t smoke. Smoking can make hot flashes worse.

• Wear loose, comfortable cotton clothing.

• Dress in layers so you easily can remove some clothing if you suddenly feel hot.

• At night, use lightweight blankets that can be removed.

Let’s come back to hormone therapy.

Here’s the bottom line – at least for me – of a complicated story. The most effective medication for hot flashes is the hormone estrogen. If you are entering menopause – which typically occurs in a woman’s late 40s or early 50s – consider hormone therapy.

The exceptions: Avoid hormone therapy if you have (or are at high risk for) heart disease, stroke, breast cancer, liver disease or blood clots in the legs.

met a man eight years ago who has become everything to me. We see each other weekly and discuss life, work, home and more. We both are married to other people.

Our relationship is not only emotional but also physical. We are secretive about our relationship only with our children – we appear in public together, and my spouse knows about it. Many people at our regular venues comment on how much in love we seem to be.

A few of my friends are privy to our relationship and wonder when we’re leaving our spouses to be together.

My question is: Can’t it just be OK to be happy with what we have? We enjoy the times we have traveled, talked and loved. I am virtually ignored by my spouse, as is he. The time he has been in my life is the happiest I have ever been. But I don’t want more.

It’s hard to explain. People think I’m in denial, but I’m not. He has issues I wouldn’t want full time, as I suppose everyone does, and I wouldn’t want to ruin what we have.

Thoughts? – Part-Time Lover Dear Part-Time: You and your lover have “an arrangement” that seems to work not only for you, but also for your spouses. It’s unconventional, to put it mildly. Because you are so open about it, I’m surprised your children haven’t caught wind of it by now. My question to you would be what you and this man plan to do when they find out, because I don’t think you can keep them in the dark forever.

Dear Abby: My wife and I are friends with a couple we have known for many years. When the four of us eat together, it’s obvious to me the husband directs the conversation toward my wife. Even when the topic is general in nature, his eye contact is with her to the point where it makes me uncomfortable. On a cruise last year, when we ate together regularly, I intentionally sat across from him and, sure enough, he talked diagonally across the table to my wife.

I always have made a conscious effort in mixed company to direct the majority of my conversation toward my male counterpart and not his wife. I feel it’s more appropriate.

Last week, we looked at auctions after one of a major was raised to two of that major. Mentioning a new suit now said that the bidder was too strong to pass, not strong enough to jump to game, and particularly wanted partner to look at his holdings in the bidder’s two named suits. This is called a help-suit game-try. It is a game-try because the partnership can still stop short of game.

But what happens when, say, one spade is raised to three spades, as in today’s deal? What do the opener’s rebids mean now?

There are three choices. If he has a minimum opening, he will pass. Most of the time, he will raise to game. Anything else suggests a slam. What would bidding a new suit promise?

There is a case for making this a help-suit bid also, but that is not the standard agreement. More traditional is that the bid shows a firstround control (ace or void) in the suit named and denies a first-round control in any suit skipped.

Why make one of these control-bids?

Usually because the opener has the values for a slam but holds two immediate losers in an unbid side suit -- here, in hearts.

So, South control-bids four clubs.

Then North does likewise with four hearts. This being music to South’s ears, he now uses some form of Blackwood before jumping to six spades.

What happens after West leads the diamond jack: queen, king, ace?

South must delay drawing trumps until he has cashed his three club winners and discarded dummy’s diamond loser. Then he leads a high spade from hand and claims when they break 1-1.
