3 candidates found consensus on most issues

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – The debate between three New Lenox mayoral candidates was without conflict, with only incumbent Tim Baldermann having some differences with challenger Ron Sly. The battleground for the debate Tuesday was set at the Warrior’s Room at Lincoln-Way West High School in New Lenox. Candidates Baldermann, Sly and Andrew Englebrecht had consensus on most issues discussed at the debate, which covered potential reduction in local government funding, economic development and communication with residents.

Journalists with New Lenox Patch and New Lenox Patriot moderated the debate and gave questions to the candidates.

Local government funding

Each candidate was asked how they would advocate for local government funding in the face of cuts proposed in Gov. Bruce Rauner’s budget.

Englebrecht said in his experience with community and advocacy organizations, he knows telling people’s personal stories of how funding reduction for services affect them would be a good sell to state lawmakers.

“The one thing that does really seem to stick is personal stories,” he said. “The way to change things is to get more voices in Springfield.”

Baldermann said he’s built relationships with state lawmakers and spoke with Rauner himself about a week and a half ago on how New Lenox is financially efficient. Although

the village could withstand the cuts, he said it would be important to fight for them because it wouldn’t be fair to the village or the residents.

Sly was skeptical Rauner’s proposal would be final but he did feel it was important for him to know the impact of those cuts on New Lenox.

“I believe we’re going to have to tighten our belt here ultimately,” he said. “It may not be 50 percent level but it’s certainly something we’ll have to look into.”

If grant delayed, Audubon Society will hold land for Pilcher Park

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Illinois Audubon Society will hold onto an 80-acre parcel for Pilcher Park if a state grant to finance the deal gets delayed, its executive director said.

“We will own the property for as long as it takes for the [park] district to take it over and put its name on the deed,” Executive Director Tom Clay said.

The Joliet Park District, which owns the park, already has seen a $750,000 state grant for improvements on the Bird Haven Greenhouse at Pilcher Park put on hold when Gov. Bruce Rauner froze grants slated for local parks across Illinois.

Joliet Park District Executive Director Dominic Egizio said he does not expect the Pilcher Park grant to be put on hold.

“We were scheduled to go out to bid on that the Monday we got the letter.”

“I have not received any notification of that yet,” Egizio said. He added that the grant for the purchase of the 80 acres was federal money distributed by the state.

The Bird Haven Greenhouse grant is state money that was for complete restoration work at the greenhouse and to add a growing room to the facility.

The park district has spent $20,000 on design work for the Bird Haven project. It almost put the project out to bid before getting notice two Mondays ago that the state money was being frozen.

“We were scheduled to go out to bid on that the Monday we got the letter,” Egizio said.

The money has been frozen as the state deals with its own financial problems. But some park districts had begun work on projects before getting grant money.

“Thank God we hadn’t started on it,” Egizio said. “We had spent money on design. We have it. So if things change, we’re ready to go.”

The Pilcher Park grant will be used to buy the 80 acres from the Illinois Audubon Society.

The society spent about $540,000 that was combined with a nearly $1.4 million grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation to make the $1.9 million land purchase.

“We’re prepared to wait,” Clay said. “We don’t want to.

But we are prepared to wait as long as it takes for the park district to be successful in getting that grant.”

Baldermann and Sly disagreed with the level of communication a mayor should give to residents, with Baldermann wanting to be open to residents all the time and Sly preferring the appropriate professional staff handle their calls.

Englebrecht said he would be open to calls and ideas from residents.

Turnout low for early voting

JOLIET – Early voting has gotten off to a slow start so far at Will County sites ahead of the April 7 consolidated election. At stake are local, mayoral and village president races.

Joliet resident Dieter Lapello was voter No. 47 to cast a ballot at the Joliet Park District’s Inwood Athletic Club since early voting kicked off Monday.

“If you don’t vote, you don’t have a right to complain,” said Lapello, who voted before noon Monday. “I feel it’s my duty to vote.”

Lapello said he was worried his erratic work schedule may prevent him from voting on Election Day, so he cast a ballot Tuesday after his usual workout at the Joliet fitness center.

Some of the busier polling places Tuesday morning included the Will County Clerk’s office, the Joliet Park District, the village of Homer Glen and the village of New Lenox.

votes had been cast at the county’s two dozen polling places, according to the Will County Clerk’s office. Another 246 were cast through the Will County Clerk’s office between Feb. 26 and March 20.

Low turnout is expected since 2015 is a non-presidential election year. But longtime election judge Lois Tomac said so much work and effort goes into the election process that it’s a shame more people don’t cast ballots.

“It’s frustrating because this election should really count. These are your local mayors being selected and your local government races at stake,” said Tomac, one of three election judges at the Joliet Park District polling place Tuesday. “It’s so important.”

With 42 years of election judge experience under her belt, Tomac said she was smart enough to bring a book, while other election judges manning the polling place had newspapers to read during the downtime.

Noak talks development during address Romeoville future prospective development

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – About 450 business, community and other area leaders from Will and DuPage counties heard Romeoville Mayor John Noak speak about the village’s developmental success during his annual State of the Village address Tuesday.

Noak focused on industrial, commercial and residential development along with transportation projects. The address was hosted by the Romeoville Area Chamber of Commerce at the Edward Hospital Athletic and Events Center.

“Our state of the village is far more fantastic than I could ever hope for,” Noak said.

“We continue to see a housing uptick like in our neighboring communities,” Noak said, adding that the Community Service Council of Will County in Romeoville has been a major asset in addressing housing issues.

Noak said Romeoville has seen 88 new businesses and 79,000 square feet of commer-

cial space added in the past year.

The Uptown Square development will soon have a Franconi’s grocery store and a new 9,000-square-foot retail center, which will house a Subway restaurant, among other businesses.

Noak said the rest of the Route 53 corridor, including plans for a VNA Health Care medical clinic in front of Ro-

meoville High School, is thriving.

He also mentioned current and future additions to the community, including an Ashley Furniture retail center, Value Place Hotel, Express Car Wash and a Wendy’s remodel.

Industrial, transportation

Noak said industrial business in Romeoville added more than 1.3 million square feet of industrial space. That included Cicero Plastic Products, Valspar Paints and RJW

Trucking, as well as Magid Glove and Safety’s relocation to Romeoville.

“Industrial has just been fantastic for us,” Noak said.

“In fact, we’re approaching one of the lowest industrial vacancy rates in recent history.”

Some of the current and future industrial plans presented by Noak included Pizzuti, Duke Realty, Molto, Aryzta, FedEx and the Opus Group.

Noak also discussed transportation projects vital to the whole region.

“Romeoville exists because of transportation,” Noak said.

“That is our bread and butter.

It’s what makes us competitive.”

He said plans for a new Metra station on the Heritage Corridor line are on track, with construction likely starting in 2016. But he said commuters already are benefiting from the new park-n-ride at White Fence Farm.

Noak said both Will and DuPage counties will benefit from the Interstate 55 interchange projects at Route 126 and Weber Road, which is in the second phase of development, including utility work.

Joliet considers local preference on bids for city business

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet is considering a shop local approach for future city contracts.

A proposal would give Will and Kendall county companies a preference in future bids. Local contractors could be as much as $20,000 higher than the lowest bid and still get the job, but they would have to match the lowest price once bids are opened.

The proposal goes to the Joliet City Council Land Use and Legislative Committee for review Wednesday.

land, who initiated the proposal, said the idea came from community meetings he had.

“There’s not a lot of disposable income to support local businesses,” McFarland said.

“One of the things that kept popping up is people saying, ‘The city is doing a lot of business outside of the city, outside of the county. What can you do to take tax dollars and spend them locally?’ ” McFarland said the proposal gives preference to businesses outside the city into Will and Kendall counties to broaden the scope for local opportunity. The far

West Side of Joliet extends into Kendall County.

“A lot of the businesses in Will and Kendall employ Joliet residents,” he said.

The proposal requires a company employ at least two Joliet residents full-time to qualify as a local bidder.

Local bidders would qualify for the preference if they are within 2 percent of the lowest bid, according to a draft ordinance that will be reviewed Wednesday. The committee meets at 3:30 p.m. in the planning conference room at City Hall, 150 W. Jefferson St. Council members had con-

sidered giving preference as high as 5 percent.

Councilman John Gerl said he received favorable comments after recommending that the city buy police and fire vehicles from local auto dealers even though their proposed prices were higher than those from a Springfield dealer. The difference was about $2,700 on 16 vehicles.

“I got a few calls from some local business people that felt it was a good idea,” Gerl said.

Creating an ordinance will codify the local preference, Gerl said. It also makes all bidders aware of the rules

and sets some limit on local preference.

“I think we also have to keep in mind that we want to give preference to our local bidders, but we want to be fair to all parties,” Gerl said.

Two other proposals that have been reconsidered for changes also will be reviewed by the committee on Wednesday: • A temporary sign ordinance that would limit the number of temporary signs a business can post and how long the signs can stay up.

• Rules for speaking to the City Council at council meetings.

Nigerian native speaks to Joliet students Students learn about Igbo culture while reading postcolonial novel

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Isaac Agba greeted Joliet West High School students Tuesday by waving a fan.

Agba of Joliet was dressed in traditional Igbo garments and wearing a red cap. He came to Joliet West to teach students about Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, and Igbo culture. Before he spoke, he waved a fan.

It’s how Igbo chiefs blessed their visitors or friends, he said.

“This is usually our ‘hand’ and this is what we shake our hands with,” Agba said.

Joliet West students honors English classes are reading the postcolonial novel “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe, a Nigerian writer. Like Achebe, Agba is Igbo, one of more than 250 ethnic groups within Nigeria, according to the CIA World Factbook.

“It’s just to show students there is a real life connection to literature. I think they were able to understand the novel better by hearing Isaac speak,” said Amy Malizia, English teacher.

Agba, who came to the U.S. in 1986, was invited to the class to talk about his experience growing up in Nigeria

and adjusting to life in the U.S. One student asked what one of his biggest challenges was when coming to the U.S., and he said it was getting used to the way people drive.

“It eventually dawned on me the traffic signals and signs are different than what we see over there [in Nigeria],” Agba said. “People in Nigeria are very impatient when driving.”

The Igbo people are a minority in Nigeria, Agba said.

They have their own culture and history. He said Igbo have no centralized government and do not believe in kings but in “individual uniqueness.”

Past European colonial rule brought many ethnic groups in Nigeria together, which created conflict, he said.

“These were very autonomous societies until the colonial government brought them as one,” Agba said. “So when you hear about the conflicts, such as Boko Haram, these are the results of very different people, different religion, different beliefs brought together. It doesn’t really mix.”

Joliet anti-violence group plans prayer walk for Sunday

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – An anti-violence group plans to hold a prayer walk Sunday in Joliet and speak with residents about a recent spike in violence.

Men of Valor 2 is coordinating a prayer walk inviting all community leaders at noon Sunday to the Sacred Heart Parish parking lot, 337 S. Ottawa St. The walk is being held because of shootings and murders that have plagued Joliet since November, said Lonnie Posley Sr., New Canaan Land Christian Church pastor and Men of Valor 2 vice president.

Most of the violence has been on the East Side of Joliet, including the Forest Park area, also known as “The Hills,” he said.

On March 14, Joliet residents and leaders gathered at Christ Temple Church in Joliet to pray and walk for victims of violence. The church was near the site of a shooting March 10 where a Joliet woman died from a gunshot wound to the head.

The event brought together residents, pastors, police and city leaders. Posley attended, along with several other pastors.

Posley expects a similar gathering for the Sunday walk. He said Men of Valor 2 has approached the Joliet Police Department, the Will County Sheriff’s Office, Joliet Fire Department and lo-

cal politicians.

During the walk, participants plan to go door-todoor passing out flyers and learning about resident concerns. Posley said he wants to know what their needs are and what their thoughts are about the violence and the police. Participants also will make them aware of available resources.

“We’re trying to gauge from those in the community on what they want from people in leadership positions,” he said.

Recent shootings in Joliet have left many residents concerned about their safety.

Joliet police Chief Brian Benton has said the city has seen a spike in gang violence since the holiday season and police are investigating those responsible. The police have continued to ask the public for help in their investigations.

They are only meant to be driven a short distance at 55 mph or less.

Computer replacement plan approved

The Channahon District 17 School Board has approved raises for district principals, the dean, the finance director and support staff.

The raises approved Monday will go into effect during the 2015-16 school year.

Principals and the dean received raises of 4 to 5 percent.

Pioneer Path School Principal Laura DuBois will make $70,297; N.B. Galloway School Principal Angela Stallion will make $90,795; and Three Rivers School Principal Susan Kavich will make $98,484.

Channahon Junior High School Principal Chad Uphoff will make $105,936; and athletic director/dean Brad Homerding will make $66,826.

Chief Business Official Michael Schroeder will receive a 2 percent raise with a new three-year contract. Beginning

July 1, Schroeder will earn $142,894 under the new performance-based contract.

District support staff will receive 5 percent raises.

CVS Pharmacy has signed a letter of intent to develop a large portion of the commercial property that housed the BP gas station and three other businesses on Route 30 and Cedar Road, Mayor Tim Baldermann announced at Monday’s Village Board meeting.

The village last month signed a contract with L & B Business Enterprises Inc. to purchase the BP gas station for $1.7 million.

Baldermann said the retail-

er will pay about $1.8 million to the village for the land, almost two-thirds of what the village has paid for the property it has purchased. New Lenox has spent about $2.9 million to buy the gas station, a dry cleaners, a bar and a restaurant, which are adjacent to it.

This is part of the village’s plan to revitalize the downtown area and build a new train station using sales tax dollars generated by new businesses.

“The taxpayers will pay nothing for that property,” Baldermann said, adding that in the process the village will get rid of blighted buildings.

Truck terminal objections

Separately, the Village

Board unanimously agreed to file an objection to a special use petition submitted by NR1 Transport Inc. to the Will County Board to build a truck terminal on about 14.5 acres at the southeast corner of Gougar Road and Route 30.

Trustees expressed concerns about the effect the terminal would have on traffic conditions on an already congested road.

The attorney for NR1, Michael Hansen, presented the proposal to the Village Board on Monday. Hansen said NR1 would prohibit trucks from entering and exiting the area during peak traffic, adding that a limited amount of truck and employee cars would use the facility during the remain-

der of its 5 a.m to midnight operating hours.

Last month, a representative for NR1 told the Plan Commission it owns 37 trucks, 40 trailers and has 25 employees.

Village Trustees Annette Bowden and David Smith pointed out NR1 would essentially be self-policing the traffic coming in and out of the terminal since the village could not count how many trucks use the facility every day.

“Putting any more truck traffic [in that area] would be detrimental to our community,” Smith said.

The board also heard objections to the proposal from the in-house counsel for Providence Catholic High School, which is near the property.

Maureen Harton said the high school is concerned about student driver safety. She cited a fatal accident last month when a semi-trailer struck and killed a Lincoln-Way Central High School student on Route 30 near Schoolhouse Road.

“Our school will bear the brunt of this,” Harton said.

Will County Board Member Ray Tuminello was present Monday, along with Board Members Mike Fricilone, Annette Parker, Lauren Staley-Ferry and Zoning Administrator David DuBois.

“We heard you loud and clear,” Tuminello said, adding they would take New Lenox’s concerns into consideration when the County Board votes on the proposal next month.

Rewards program goes live

New Lenox residents also can show their civic pride and gain rewards now that the village’s online rewards program is live.

Assistant Village Administrator Robin Ellis announced Monday night the New Lenox page at the InOur.Community website is up and running. It was set up by BondingPoint LLC.

Residents can go to inour. community/newlenox to register for the free rewards program with their name and a valid e-mail address and password.

They can earn points for activities such as taking a short survey about food, learning New Lenox trivia and rallying people on their social media pages to vote in the April 7 election.

Rewards include gift cards

for Wal-Mart, Target, Speedway and Bulldog’s Ale House, one entry to the Chasing the Sun 5K/8K on June 11 and a mystery reward.

Ellis said the village continues working with BondingPoint to add more incentives.

The service is free for the village, which will receive 35 percent of all advertising revenue after an initial recovery of $36,000 by BondingPoint.

NEW LENOX – Village officials are finalizing plans to repair and expand New Lenox’s Veterans Memorial in time for a rededication ceremony at the end of the summer.

Last September, four of five granite memorial stones representing the U.S. military branches in the New Lenox Commons were damaged after a man allegedly knocked them over. The man, Brian Sundstrom of Bourbonnais, was charged with damage to state-supported property in connection with the matter.

The story gained attention across the country and enough donations have come in to now include a Purple Heart monument, a Fallen Soldier monument and a sound system to play “Taps” at sundown, Mayor Tim Baldermann said during Monday’s Village Board meeting.

“The VFW and the American Legion will get the first look at the plans,” Baldermann said. “Once the veterans are happy, we will move forward.”

Insurance will cover the costs of the new stones, which have already been ordered, Baldermann said. The $56,000 in donations will be used for the additions.

The village would like to have the improvements finished in time for a rededication ceremony Aug. 22, which would commemorate the memorial’s 11th anniversary, Baldermann said.

Village Trustee Annette Bowden suggested the village “reach out” to local high school students to participate in the project for community service credit.

Not long after, he was able to hire some of them back using other funds, while noting it was only a temporary solution. Since state law requires live court reporters in all felony and juvenile cases, assignments were shifted to handle the caseload, while some court calls were changed to different times or consolidated.

SPRINGFIELD – Local lawmakers split along party lines Tuesday in Springfield as the Illinois House moved to plug a gaping $1.6 billion hole in this year’s state budget that threatened subsidized day care programs and salaries for court reporters.

The legislation gives Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner authority to transfer money from programs such as roads, parks and conservation, to those deemed more of a priority for the last three months of the fiscal year.

The remaining cash would come from a 2.25 percent across-the-board budget cut and give the governor the authority to distribute $97 million to needy schools less able to absorb the reduction.

Democrats Rep. Larry Walsh Jr. of Elwood and Rep. Natalie Manley of Joliet voted against the legislation, while Republicans Margo McDermed of Mokena and Rep. John Anthony of Plainfield voted in favor of the legislation.

Walsh Jr. said the shift of money from special-purpose state funds and the across-theboard budget cuts only exacerbate the problem.

“All along I’ve said we can’t be cutting our way out of this,” Walsh said. “We need to have a serious talk about revenue in Springfield, and that hasn’t happened yet.”

The legislation now heads to the Illinois Senate.

Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, said Tuesday she supports the legislation and anticipates a possible vote later this week.

Rezin criticized House Democrats who voted against the bill.

“The same people who voted no today voted yes on the bill that created this shortfall in the first place,” Rezin said, referring to the spending plan approved last May by a Democratic-controlled Legislature and then-Gov. Pat Quinn.

“They passed a budget knowing there was not enough money in the budget to pay daycare

centers, court reporters and the [Illinois] Department of Corrections.”

Many criticized that budget for not having enough money to make it through the year because it relied on the extension of the temporary state income tax hike.

Walsh Jr. said that budget had at least an interfund borrowing provision that required lawmakers to pay back any money they shifted elsewhere in the budget. Those funds will never see that money again with this short-term fix, he said.

Walsh said he’s concerned about a provision in the latest bill that shifts $350 million previously earmarked for road construction.

“We have some serious transportation issues here in Will County,” Walsh Jr. said.

OBITUARIES ANGELO AGGELOPOULOS Angelo Aggelopoulos, age 82, at rest on Saturday, March 21, 2015, with his loving daughters by his side.

Angelo was born and raised in Joliet, IL and educated in the Joliet school system.

He was a member of the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Joliet.

Angelo was a proud United States Army Veteran serving during the Korean War. After the war, Angelo and his wife Irene became partners in numerous businesses in the Joliet and Wilmington communities. With his siblings, they opened the Hickory Creek Food Market in Wilmington and left after 4 years.

In 1961 they founded Angelo’s Liquors on Broadway Street in Crest Hill and in 1962 they opened Angelo’s Liquors in Wilmington. In 1981, Angelo’s Outdoor Sports Center, Ben Franklin Variety Store and True Value Hardware were established.

The Pic-A-Flick Video Stores with 4 locations were opened shortly thereafter.

Angelo is survived by his loving daughters, Cathy Aggelopoulos of New Lenox, Patti Van Auken of Minooka, IL, and Georgine (Jay) Penney of Evans, GA; grandchildren, Melissa (Kevin) Oman, Kristen Van Auken and Sarah Van Auken, Chad, Sydney and Taylor

Penney; great-grandchildren, Layla Oman, Penelope and Emma Skrzypczynski; siblings, Mary (Dominic) Mancuso, Nicholas Aggelopoulos; brother-in-law, Nick (the late Rita) Andrew; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Marie Eleanor Black, died Sunday evening, March 22, 2015, in her home. She was the widow of August Black and the mother of nine children.

Marie was born February 6, 1918, in Bellwood, Illinois. She was the daughter of Nicholas and Marie (Gilson) Weber. As a youth she lived in Bellwood and attended Proviso Township High School in Maywood for 3 years. Her family moved to Papineau, Illinois and she graduated from St. Anne High School in 1935.

She took courses at Chicago Business College and worked 10 years for Precision Metals in Chicago.

Marie married Augie Black in Juneau, Alaska October 19, 1944. They lived there the duration of World War II and then moved to Morris where they spent the remainder of their lives.

Their nine children survive them, George, Don (Kathy), Frank, Jean, Ed, Linda, Jim (Marifran), Mike (Trisha), and Rich. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Marie was predeceased by her parents, husband, sisters, Margaret Wiedemann, Ardell Shortell, Opal VanBorg, Mildred “Mimi” Soucie; and brothers, Nicholas “Dick” Weber and George Weber.

This was a dream I had...

I was on my way home today and stopped for a drink. As I walked in I saw Daddy and he handed me a glass. It was a small glass with about 1/4 full of brown whiskey, maybe Crown Royal. He was with some friends and I politely asked him what he was doing. He answered, “I’m on my way to look at something over there,” pointing outside, to the North of where we were. He said he was waiting to get a part put on his Cadillac. As he continued to talk to his friends, I noticed he was wearing a very nice suit and I really noticed that his shoes were very clean, almost shining! So I sipped on my drink and started thinking, in my mind that maybe he’s going to give someone an estimate on a job and maybe I could help out in some kind of way. I continued to sip on my drink and admire the conversation he was having with his friends. I asked the guy to give me the bill for the part my dad had put on his Cadillac, so he handed me the tab. The tab was only 9 dollars and as I’m looking at the tab, I say “Can you believe that your part for your Cadillac is just 9 dollars?” As I turn to look at him, he was gone. He was driving North in his Cadillac wearing a very nice suit with his shiny new shoes. The drink was 9 dollars. Paid in full...I miss him too...RIP Daddy!

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. will be released from a federal prison on Thursday and will serve out the remainder of his term in a Washington, D.C., halfway house, former U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy told The Associated Press after visiting Jackson.

Kennedy said he spoke with Jackson at the minimum security federal prison camp in Montgomery, Alabama, where the son of the civil rights leader has been serving a 2½-year sentence after pleading guilty to illegally spending $750,000 in campaign funds on personal items.

Man accused of stabbing wife in hospital bathroom

CHICAGO – Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner has ordered a Chicago TV and movie studio to return a $10 million state grant awarded by his predecessor, Pat Quinn.

Rauner’s order comes after a Chicago Sun-Times report that the grant was awarded to Cinespace Chicago Film Studios for the purchase of land that wasn’t for sale. Owners of six properties listed in the grant have told the newspaper that they don’t plan to sell their properties.

The Sun-Times reported there’s no indication the studio has spent any of the money.

The newspaper also found that there weren’t appraisals for the land indicating prices were accurate, and that the state didn’t

ELK GROVE VILLAGE – A man accused of stabbing his wife to death with a screwdriver inside a locked bathroom at a northern Illinois hospital has been charged with first-degree murder.

Prosecutors say Javier Bahena, 43, killed his wife because he believed she was having an affair. Francisca Quintero, 42 of Burlington, Wisconsin, was killed Sunday just hours after her brother died of a heart attack at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village.

In a Monday hearing, prosecutors said the Bahena and Quintero were married for more than 20 years, but had been separated over the past year.

He was convicted of domestic battery against Quintero in

Minola was a Secular Franciscan at St. John’s Church in Joliet, and was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church, Manhattan. She volunteered throughout her life with the CCW, Meals on Wheels, FISH,

Together, with her husband, Jack, she founded the Shepherd’s Table in 1985. She was an active member of JARTA, Alumni of USF, and Joliet Women’s Club. She was an avid story-teller, extraordinary letter-writer, and lover of life, who gifted everyone with compassion, kindness, and joyful love.

Jobless rate falls to 6 percent in Feb.

CHICAGO – Unemployment continued to fall in Illinois in February, hitting 6 percent for the first time since 2008.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security said Tuesday that the jobless rate fell to that level from a January rate of 6.1 percent. The national unemployment rate was 5.5 percent in February.

Unemployment has now fallen in Illinois for 11 of the past 12 months. In February 2014, the jobless rate was 7.9 percent.

The department said in its monthly unemployment report that the trade, transportation and utilities sector and the professional and business services sector each grew by more than 5,000 jobs last month. Government employers lost a net 1,600 jobs while manufacturers

cut 800 more than they added.

Man pleads guilty to stealing from Islamic school

WHEATON – The financial director of an Islamic school has pleaded guilty to charges he stole from the institution.

Inam Rahim of Naperville admitted he stole more than $500,000 as the director of business and finance for the Islamic Foundation in Villa Park.

His trial on theft charges was to begin Monday.

According to DuPage County prosecutors, over two years beginning in 2009, Rahim funneled foundation funds to his wife through the group’s payroll and padded his own paycheck. He also was accused of issuing unauthorized checks to a company he owned.

Rahim’s next court date is scheduled for May 18. He faces anywhere from probation to 15 years in prison when sentenced.

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama agreed Tuesday to slow the U.S. military pullout from Afghanistan at the request of its new government but insisted the delay won’t jeopardize his commitment to end America’s longest war before leaving office.

In a shift from his previous plan, Obama said the U.S. would leave its 9,800 troops currently in Afghanistan in place rather than downsizing to 5,500 by year’s end. The size of the U.S. footprint for next year is still to be decided, he said, but he brushed aside any speculation the withdrawal will bleed into 2017 when the next president takes over.

High nursing home bills squeeze insurers

NEW YORK – Thirty years ago, insurance companies had the answer to the soaring cost of caring for the elderly. Plan ahead and buy a policy that will cover your expenses. Now, there’s a new problem: Even insurers think it’s unaffordable.

Life insurance firms pitched long-term care policies as the prudent way for Americans to shoulder the cost of staying in nursing homes. But those same companies have found that long-term-care policies are squeezing their profits. Earnings for life insurers slid 11 percent in the most recent quarter,

according to Moody’s Investors Service, and long-term care was the chief culprit.

Four of the five largest providers – including Manulife and MetLife – have either scaled back their business or stopped selling new policies, according to Moody’s. The largest provider, Genworth Financial, continues to offer them, yet has struggled under the weight of rising costs.

DHS No. 2 accused of improper influence

WASHINGTON – The No. 2 official at the Department of Homeland Security improperly intervened on behalf of foreign investors seeking U.S. visas in three cases involving prominent Democrats, including a company run by the youngest brother of likely Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton, the agency’s inspector general said Tuesday.

Investigators said Homeland Security Deputy Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas helped efforts to secure the visas in ways that created the appearance of favoritism and special access and caused resentment among career government employees, managers and lawyers.

The agency’s inspector general, John Roth, said he could not suggest a motive for Mayorkas, who served on President Barack Obama’s transition team after his 2008 election.

German plane crashes in Alps; 150 people likely dead The ASSOCIATED PRESS SEYNE-LES-ALPES, France – A black box recovered from the scene and pulverized pieces of debris strewn across Alpine mountainsides held clues to what caused a German jetliner to take an unexplained eight-minute dive Tuesday midway through a flight from Spain to Germany, apparently killing all 150 people on board.

The victims included two babies, two opera singers and 16 German high school students and their teachers returning from an exchange trip to Spain. It was the deadliest crash in France in decades.

The Airbus A320 operated by Germanwings, a budget subsidiary of Lufthansa, was less than an hour from landing in Duesseldorf on a flight from Barcelona when it unexpectedly went into a rapid descent.

The pilots sent out no distress call and had lost radio

contact with their control center, France’s aviation authority said, deepening the mystery.

While investigators searched through debris from Flight 9525 on steep and desolate slopes, families across Europe reeled with shock and grief. Sobbing relatives at both airports were led away by airport workers and crisis counselors.

“The site is a picture of horror. The grief of the families and friends is immeasurable,” German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said after being flown over the crash scene.

“We must now stand together. We are united in our great grief.”

It took investigators hours to reach the site, led by mountain guides to the craggy ravine in the southern French Alps, not far from the Italian border and the French Riviera.

Video shot from a helicopter and aired by BFM TV showed rescuers walking in

the crevices of a rocky mountainside scattered with plane parts. Photos of the crash site showed white flecks of debris across a mountain and larger airplane body sections with windows. A helicopter crew that landed briefly in the area saw no signs of life, French officials said.

“Everything is pulverized. The largest pieces of debris are the size of a small car. No one can access the site from the ground,” Gilbert Sauvan, president of the general council, Alpesde-Haute-Provence, told The Associated Press.

“This is pretty much the worst thing you can imagine,” said Bodo Klimpel, mayor of the German town of Haltern, rent with sorrow after losing 16 tenth graders and their two teachers.

The White House and the airline chief said there was no sign that terrorism was involved, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged reporters not to speculate on the cause.

Arrogance leads to Schock’s quick exit SPRINGFIELD – There’s really no mystery how Congressional wunderkind Aaron Schock fell from grace so rapidly. It’s simple, it’s too common in politics and it’s spelled H-UB-R-I-S. Schock, suspected of lavish spending of taxpayer dollars, is calling it quits after the bright lights turned hot very fast. In more than four high-profile terms, he ignored a parade of Illinois politicians who’d pulled similar stunts of self-indulgence before him.

And the 33-year-old Congressman became so enraptured with his own success and image he lost sight of the people he was in Washington to serve.

While fundraising, he once said, “I’ve never forgotten where I come from, what values matter most and how you want me to lead.”

And that message came from the same fella who posed shirtless on the cover of Men’s Health magazine sporting his six-pack abs? Come on, guy, you’re from Peoria. The only six-packs people care about there have blue ribbons painted on them. I should know. I grew up not far away in Galesburg.

And did Schock really think the folks scarfing down corn biscuits at the Cracker Barrel in Bloomington related to their congressman?

He spent $40,000 having his Washington, D.C., office redecorated in the style of British aristocrats. Red paint, gilded picture frames and, yes, pheasant feathers. Whatever happened to “egg-shell white” and gray steel desks for a government office?

Anyway, the unusual décor caught the eye of a Washington Post reporter who wrote a story. Others started scouring the congressman’s financial

Remember former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.? He is serving time after spending $750,000 in campaign funds for personal use. He bought two stuffed elk heads, but no pheasant feathers, to hang on his office wall.

And then there is U.S. Rep. Dan Rostenkowski who stole $50,000 in stamps from the House post office and spent $40,000 on furniture, fine china and crystal. (No pheasant feathers were found, though.)

He ended up in prison too.

And don’t forget Rod Blagojevich, who – with his wife – spent $400,000 on clothes while he was governor. Rod ended up in prison, too.

Consider what Schock’s father, Richard, told a TV reporter about his son: “Two years from now he’ll be successful, if he’s not in jail.”

Success can breed arrogance and arrogance entitlement.

Perhaps Schock wishes he studied a long line of prominent Illinois politicians who squandered the public trust with acts of self-indulgence.

NEW LENOX – There’s little doubt that the boys volleyball teams from Lincoln-Way West and Plainfield East both feature some talented players.

So the key for both the Warriors and Bengals will be just how quickly they get everyone playing together.

When the squads kicked off their seasons Tuesday in a nonconference match, West proved to be moving toward that goal faster than East as it captured a 25-15, 25-14 win.

Warriors coach Brian Thorp also had the advantage of having one of the nation’s top performers, Michael Wexter, playing for his side, which certainly helped the cause.

“They make it so easy for me to coach since they work hard, they’re a fun group to be around and they’re getting better every day,” said Thorp, who was assistant to Rory Olson the past two years. “I feel like we still have a long way to go and have a lot of hard work to put in. But if we play up to our potential, the sky’s the limit for this group.

“We’ve set our goals high but we know that that comes with hard work; we’re not going to get there just saying it.

We have the leadership and talented players everywhere, so hopefully, if the hard work pays off, then it will all pay off in the end.”

Beside the Pepperdine-bound senior setter/outside hitter Wexter (six kills, three aces), Thorp, who was a setter at Lincoln-Way Central, will look to senior middle hitter Jake Gasparich (eight kills), an excellent student who will compete at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

“Losing Jon Adlington in the middle from last year is a big loss, but Max has come in and shown a lot of improvement through his club season,” Thorp said. “Hugh Flores is playing in the back row and also showed a lot of improvement. And Jon Rossi is our second setter and we’re getting lots of setting reps with him because ultimately we’d love to get Michael swinging, but we need to make sure that we have two setters in order to do that.”

“I think that we’re going to have a great season,” Wexter said. “Our team is really closeknit since we bond all of the time by doing stuff like playing GameCube at someone’s house or playing basketball during the off-season. Some of the main things in volleyball are chemistry and communication, and you can tell when

we’re on the court that we are really good friends, and all of us enjoy playing with each other.

“A lot of the players who go through our program pick up a club team after their freshman season and they come back and it’s like night and day from where they were before. Last year there were times where we’d get out of sync and couldn’t put it away in a close Game 3. So I think the key will be finishing games and keeping everyone level-headed.”

Bengals coach Dan Vergo only has three seniors on his roster, Adriel Rivas (10 digs, four kills), Feras Hleihel and Matt Mapleton, so most of the starters that he put on the floor for the opener will also be back for his program next year. That group includes Luke Brown (five assists), Nick Jenca, Brian Michalski

and Drew May. While Vergo likes the group of players that he has to work with, he acknowledged that it will take some time for his athletes to get used to playing with each other.

“Individually, we have a ton of talent,” Vergo said.

“But right now, we’re just kind of getting everyone together since most of these guys haven’t played together yet. So I’m actually pretty excited about this year.

“This was a good tune-up for us, it just doesn’t help that they’re one of the best in the state right now. But it’s always fun to play against them since they’re good kids and I like their coaches and they have a great program. And on Saturday we have the Plainfield North tournament, so we’ll get five more matches and hopefully we’ll get better there.”

By TIM TIERNEY Shaw Media correspondent PLAINFIELD – Split into two entwined groups at the end of practice, Plainfield North softball players happily enacted a drill to further build team unity.

The human knot was explained by senior co-captain Morgan Krieger as one group reached the successful conclusion.

“You join hands with different people, work together and communicate to get out of the knot into a circle,’’ Krieger said. “If you lose, you have to run.’’

It was another step in the continuing process of bonding and building softball success at Plainfield North.

“That’s been great,’’ fourthyear North coach Allison Wodziak said of recent progress. “Where they were when I got here and where they’ve come. They have a respect for the program that I don’t think they had. That to me was the biggest deal.

“This is my first group of four-year people to come through. I’m excited because they’re so excited to finally be

Senior pitcher and co-captain Syd Schmittel is at the top of that list.

“She has the maturity of an adult and the team leadership, the respect from teammates,’’ Wodziak said.

Schmittel, who’ll attend Cardinal Stritch in Milwaukee, has witnessed steady growth in the softball program.

“The intensity is the biggest

thing that I’ve seen improve,’’ she said. “Everyone is getting along. Everyone is pushing each other to work harder.’’

North dropped to 7-17 last season, 6-8 in the Southwest Prairie Conference, after winning 13 games in 2013 and 2012.

“They know they can do big things, but we hit that point in the season, whether it’s pitching or something else, we didn’t get over it,’’ Wodziak said.

North’s coach knows what it takes to be successful on and off the field. Wodziak was the senior catcher on the 2002 Lincoln-Way East team that won the Class AA state championship.

Wodziak and her players are confident the Tigers can better navigate the physical and psychological hurdles this season.

“I think this will be a big year for us,’’ Schmittel said.

Part of the growth and maturity for third baseman Krieger (St. Ambrose) was attained from watching her brother, Jack, a basketball and volleyball standout at North.

He finished his basketball career this season at Saint Xavier as the school’s No. 7 all-time

scorer.

“You’ve got to work with different people, be a leader,’’ Morgan said she learned from her brother. “Always give it your all. Do what you can for your team because you’re in it with your teammates.’’

Key individuals in that group include senior outfielder Kellie Fenza (Wisconsin-Parkside), second baseman Carolyn Hett, pitcher Abby Kruzel, outfielder Melanie Flock, catcher Autumn Woods and first baseman Jacadi Rivera. Hett and Kruzel are promising sophomores.

North’s first two games are home against Glenbard North and Naperville Central. The Tigers’ conference opener is April 7 at Plainfield South.

Last year, North rallied to beat Oswego East in the opener of the Downers Grove South Regional before losing to the host team.

“I want to see us have a winning season,’’ Schmittel said. “And win a regional, too.

It will definitely be tough, but if we work really hard we can get it.’’

“As the season goes on, just have to push through,’’ Krieger said.

USF’s Panayotovich earns NAIA honor SUBMITTED REPORTS JOLIET – St. Francis’ Adam Panayotovich was named NAIA National Pitcher of the Week after throwing a pair of extra-inning shutouts as the Saints opened Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play last week.

Panayotovich (5-1) had a one-hitter in eight innings for a 1-0 victory Tuesday over Cardinal Stritch. On Saturday against Trinity Christian, he worked 12 innings in another 1-0 victory.

At the Elite Eight banquet in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Johnson received the Elite 89 Award. She carries a 4.00 cumulative GPA as an organizational communications major with minors in sport management and business studies.

The Elite 89 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA for each NCAA championship.

Cam Post a fixture for Knights

By STEVE MILLAR Shaw Media correspondent NEW LENOX – Cam Post found himself thrown into the fire as a freshman last season.

Not only was Post elevated to the varsity baseball team for Lincoln-Way Central, he was the starting catcher tasked with handling a pitching staff that included Brad Bass, whose 92-mph fastball and overall stuff earned him a scholarship to Notre Dame.

“It was unbelievable,” Post said. “I definitely did not expect to be up on varsity catching Brad Bass. It was a different experience for sure.

“Brad kind of took me under his wing and taught me what to expect, what to do. He picked me up when I was down or angry. It just changed my whole outlook of what high school ball was going to be like.”

Post impressed with the way he handled the transition from junior high to catching varsity pitchers.

“It was a tough task for

him to catch a guy like Brad, but he did a great job,” Central coach Scott Gardner said. “We told him all along that defense was going to be the focus and we thought offense might be a struggle.

But he actually impressed us with his bat. He had some learning experiences that’ll definitely help him this year and going forward.”

Post is considered one of the top prospects in Illinois for the Class of 2017, according to Prep Baseball Report, but he says there’s still plenty of room for improvement.

“I don’t feel much pressure after last year,” he said.

“I feel a good year coming and I can’t wait to get out there.

I want to keep getting better with blocking and throwing and with hitting, too.”

One of the big questions for the Knights, who finished 20-13 last season, centers around the guys Post will be catching this season.

“Losing Brad is going to be hard to get over, but I think we can do it,” Davi said. “I’m ready to step into a bigger role. I’m excited. Being a senior, I love being with these guys every day and leading them. It’s good.”

Davi says his control is his biggest asset.

“Location and movement

are my biggest keys,” he said.

“I don’t throw as hard as Brad, but I can locate it pretty well.”

Offensively, the Knights will look to manufacture runs with less power in the lineup than in the past. Gardner will rely on seniors Collin Brauer, Ryan Morgan and Sean Studer as well as junior Chad Tucker.

“We have some team speed, so we want to put the ball in play, limit the strikeouts and put the pressure on the defense,” Gardner said.

One of the keys will be defense. Gardner said it was a bit of a weakness last season, but he hopes it will be a major strength this spring.

“Defense is going to be our main focus in practice this year,” he said.

Davi is optimistic it will add up to a successful season.

“I think we should be really good,” he said. “I have confidence in everyone on this team. I want to go deep in the playoffs this year, definitely.

It’s my senior year. I get one more shot at it.”

Brauer is among the returning regulars for the Knights.

Two weeks ago, John Fox responded with a long pause when asked who the Bears have on the roster to play defensive end, before saying, “that’s really hard for me to answer right now.”

Now, Fox at least has a better answer of who will compete to play up front. On Tuesday, the Bears signed two players who can play D-end in the new 3-4 defense, Ray McDonald and Jarvis Jenkins. Both players will be on one-year deals, and McDonald’s is pending a physical.

The Bears are taking a chance on McDonald, a 6-foot3, 290-pounder who was cut last season after two run-ins with the law. He was arrested Aug. 31 on felony domestic violence charges. Those charges were subsequently dropped, with the Santa Clara district attorney’s office citing insufficient evidence.

The 49ers defended McDonald, 30, and chose not to suspend him, and he started 14 games, notching 39 tackles, three sacks, one forced fumble and four tackles for loss.

In December, though, he was a suspect in a sexual assault case and the 49ers cut him on Dec. 17 for “a pattern of poor decision-making.”

He has not been charged in that incident and is suing the accuser for defamation.

Jenkins, 26, is 6-4, 315 pounds and turns 27 on April 24. He spent the past four seasons with Washington. Another five-technique who has the frame to kick inside, Jenkins played in all 16 games last season with 14 starts and had 28 tackles.

According to multiple reports, the Bears also agreed to terms with former Buccaneers inside linebacker Mason Foster. The 26-year-old had three interceptions in 2013, led all rookies in tackles in 2011 and had 62 tackles in 10 games last season.

Cubs’ Jackson gives up 8 in loss to A’s The ASSOCIATED PRESS MESA, Ariz. – Edwin Jackson might be thinking he wishes he never found his way to work.

The Cubs right-hander was scratched from his start Tuesday when he went to the wrong ballpark, then gave up eight runs when he finally found the mound in the Cubs’ 14-2 loss to the Oakland Athletics.

Jackson said he entered “Oakland Athletics spring training complex” into his Google Maps app on his phone and it directed him to Phoenix Muni, which is across the street from the Phoenix Zoo. The A’s are now training at HoHoKam, the Cubs’ former spring training home. The Cubs’ current home is less than five miles away.

“It was my fault for not looking to see where it was,” said Jackson, who arrived in time to see Cubs prospect Kris Bryant hit his ninth homer of the spring in the third inning. “I’ve had positive outing throughout the spring, except this one.”

Jackson said getting to the park late had no effect on his pitching.

“I was already dressed and got here in time to get ready but they didn’t want me to rush things,” he said. “I came to the stadium with the mindset of being ready. It was a crazy way to start the day.”

Blake Parker made the emergency start and gave up a two-run homer to Billy Butler.

Jackson entered for the second inning and allowed nine hits – six for extra bases – eight runs in 12⁄3 innings.

Stephen Vogt also had a two-run shot for Oakland.

Barry Zito, returning to baseball after a year’s absence, extended his scoreless innings streak to 11, allowing one hit in four innings. He walked three and struck out two, lowering his ERA to 2.30.

“I can only control how I throw the ball,” Zito said. “I got up to 65 pitches today. I hit the mark.”

Rockies beat White Sox, 7-6:

Christian Bergman pitched four shutout innings to help the Colorado Rockies beat the White Sox, 7-6, in spring training in Glendale, Arizona.

Bergman allowed two hits and struck out one while finishing the game. With lefthander Jorge De La Rosa pos-

sibly headed for the disabled list with a groin injury, the 26-year-old Bergman might be an option for Colorado’s rotation.

“He had real good command, that’s what he does,” Rockies manager Walt Weiss.

“Both sides of the plate. He’s got a great feel” for pitching.

Jose Abreu connected for his first spring homer, but Sox left fielder Melky Cabrera committed two errors in Colorado’s six-run fifth inning.

Cabrera, who signed a $42 million, three-year contract with the Sox over the winter, misplayed Matt McBride’s single, allowing the Rockies to tie it at 5. Then he dropped Rafael Ynoa’s fly ball near the line for a two-base error as McBride scored.

The Sox’s John Danks retired 11 of his first 12 batters, with only an error by third baseman Emilio Bonifacio spoiling the streak.

But starting with Wilin Rosario’s single in the fourth, the veteran lefty gave up four hits and four runs before leaving in the middle of Colorado’s six-run fifth.

Danks said his changeup is getting better each time out.

He is scheduled for two more starts before the regular season begins.

“It feels good to string together a few innings and feel good about what I did,” Danks said. “As long as I get weak contact and throwing the ball over the plate I feel better about that than the strikeouts.”

Welcome spring with fresh veggies

By MELISSA D’ARABIAN The Associated Press Remember the days when you knew spring was coming by the arrival of asparagus at the grocer? These days, fresh asparagus is available almost all year. But still, my heart leaps with joy the first moment I see asparagus for less than $3 a pound. Then it is officially spring!

When asparagus is in season, I buy it weekly, both because it’s so cheap and because it’s incredibly versatile.

I serve it raw with a tangy Greek yogurt or blended bean dip for a snack, or chopped up and tossed with lemon juice, freshly ground black pepper, a dash of rich extra-virgin olive oil and a few shards of Parmesan cheese.

Or I’ll roast it to bring out the sweet and earthy notes.

To do this, just toss the stalks in a bit of olive oil, salt and pepper, then pop in a 400 degrees F. oven for 10 minutes. Or roast asparagus for half that time, which will keep some of that bright, grassy flavor, then whiz them up in a blender with fresh herbs, chicken stock and some lime for a bright springtime soup.

For a tender, fresh take on asparagus, you also can blanch it in a pot of well-salted boiling water. The trick is to

not overcook it; 45 seconds for slender stalks is plenty of time. Blanched asparagus will keep in the refrigerator and can be used to top salads, as snacks, or be added at the last second to a sauté.

Brown Butter Asparagus With Pecans Start to finish: 15 minutes Servings: 6

1½ pounds asparagus, trimmed and cleaned 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 tablespoons pecans, chopped 1 teaspoon soy sauce 1 tablespoon lemon juice Chopped fresh parsley, to garnish Bring a large pot of well-salted water to a boil. Add the asparagus and blanch for 45 seconds (add 30 seconds if stalks are particularly thick). Using tongs, remove the asparagus and allow to drain dry on paper towels. Arrange the asparagus on a serving platter.

In a large sauté pan over medium heat, melt the butter and cook until the bubbles subside and brown bits start to form, about 2 minutes. Add the pecans and stir so that nothing burns. Once the pecans are fragrant and the butter is toasty brown, stir in the soy sauce and lemon juice, then remove from the heat.

Pour the pecan butter sauce over the asparagus, sprinkle with fresh

parsley and serve.

Nutrition information per serving: 80 calories; 50 calories from fat (63 percent of total calories); 5 g fat (2.5 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 10 mg cholesterol; 5 g carbohydrate; 3 g fiber; 3 g sugar; 3 g protein; 50 mg sodium.

Roasted Brussels Sprouts With Matzo-Walnut Crumbs

Start to finish: 1 hour (35 minutes active) Servings: 6

1 sheet matzo bread ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil, divided Kosher salt and ground black pepper 1⁄3 cup walnuts or pine nuts 1½ pounds Brussels sprouts Heat the oven to 350 degrees F. Coat two baking sheets with cooking spray.

Set the matzo on a rimmed baking sheet. Use 1 tablespoon of the olive oil to brush both sides. Season with salt and pepper. Add the nuts to the other sheet pan, then set in the oven. As soon as the matzo is golden brown, remove it from the oven. Continue baking the nuts until toasted, 3 to 4 minutes for pine nuts and 6 to 8 minutes for walnuts. Let the matzo and nuts cool.

Set the matzo and nuts in a

zip-close plastic bag, then pound gently with a mallet or rolling pin until evenly crushed. Set aside.

Increase the oven temperature to 400 degrees F. Trim off and discard the ends of the Brussels sprouts. Using a food processor fitted with its thinnest slicing blade, slice the sprouts.

Spread the sliced sprouts evenly between the two prepared baking sheets. Drizzle each pan with 1½ tablespoons of the olive oil, ½ teaspoon of salt and ¼ teaspoon pepper.

Toss well, then roast on the oven upper shelf until golden brown, 15 minutes, turning the pans and stirring the sprouts every 5 minutes.

Transfer the roasted sprouts to a bowl. Add the matzo-nut mixture, toss well, then serve right away.

Many years ago, I wrote a lengthy analysis of the various types of IQ test. I noted that these tests and bridge have some things in common.

In particular, the more you practice on a particular type of test or bridgeplay technique, the better you will score.

In today’s deal, how should South plan the play in four spades after the defenders begin with three rounds of hearts?

Since North might have raised spades with only three-card support, holding, for example, 3-4-5-1 distribution, South rebid three clubs to test the waters. North, with four spades, a useful club king and a ruffing value in that suit, was happy to jump to game despite his weak trumps.

Declarer can afford only one trump loser. This requires finding East with the ace, the suit splitting 3-2, and leading twice toward the hand with the two honors.

South crosses to dummy with, say, a diamond and leads a spade.

Presumably, East will play low.

Declarer takes the trick with his king (or queen), returns to dummy with a club, and leads another trump. With this layout, the defenders cannot defeat the contract. **

• Pace yourself. Divide a big job into several 20-minute segments and pause to rest every five minutes.

• Set reasonable goals.

Clean only enough for safe passage. Don’t try to impress your neighbors by clearing your entire front walkway. Just clear enough so that folks, walking single file, can get to your front door.

• Listen to your body.

Put down your shovel and head indoors if you experience chest pain, palpitations, undue shortness of breath or fatigue, lightheadedness or nausea. These could be symptoms of heart disease. Unfortunately, the first sign of heart trouble while shoveling snow may be none of these symptoms.

Instead, the heart just stops.

If you have heart disease, have risk factors for heart disease or are older than 50, please take this advice: Hire someone to clear the snow for you, or at least use a snow blower.

About 10 years ago, one of my patients decided he was getting too old to shovel snow and hired someone to do it. While walking to the bus on the first snowy morning, he experienced chest pain. One of the main arteries of his heart was nearly completely blocked.

Just walking slowly was enough to stress his heart.

If he had shoveled snow that morning, he might not be with us. Fortunately, he caught the problem before it could injure his heart.

Dear Doctor K: Every winter my wife worries that I am going to have a heart attack while shoveling snow. Does she have cause for concern?

Dear Reader: She does.

Each winter, more than 1,200 heart-related deaths occur during or after snowstorms. Shoveling snow is risky for many reasons: • Shoveling is similar to weight lifting. Resistance exercise raises both heart rate and blood pressure, stressing the heart.

• Cold weather affects the heart. To conserve body heat in the cold, blood vessels narrow. This raises blood pressure and puts stress on the heart.

• Untrained muscles make the heart work harder. Most people use their legs much more than their arms. Using unprepared arm muscles makes the heart work harder.

• Shoveling is seasonal.

Working out regularly greatly reduces a person’s overall risk of sudden death. But shoveling snow isn’t a regular form of exercise.

I have patients who insist on shoveling the snow themselves. If you fall into this category, heed my advice: • Get in shape before it snows. Fitness will protect your heart from the stresses of shoveling. Exercise year-round with a combination of aerobics, stretching, calisthenics and low-resistance weight training.

• Don’t shovel early in the morning. That’s when heart attacks are most likely to occur.

• Don’t shovel after meals. Your heart is pumping extra blood to your gut after you eat. If you shovel after a meal, you’re also asking your heart to pump extra blood to your muscles.

• Warm up. Stretch and limber up with calisthenics before you put on your coat.

• Use a lightweight shovel. The snow is heavy enough.

• Shovel smartly. It’s much safer to lift two or

Dear Abby: My fiance, “Jerry,” has a daughter-inlaw who flashes both of us intimate parts of her body.

At a recent gathering, she went down to the floor 2 feet away from where Jerry was sitting and gave us both a full view up her dress. Abby, she did it deliberately!

I thought the time one of her breasts popped out of her blouse was a “wardrobe malfunction.” I no longer feel that way.

Jerry is a pushover. He doesn’t say anything; he just runs away from it. I’m afraid things will only get worse.

She must be trying to run me off. I can’t think of any other reason for her behavior.
