By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Pat Hensley, executive director for the money-troubled Senior Services Center of Will County, has resigned.

The announcement comes two months after center officials announced they faced a financial crisis, having maxed out the center’s line of credit while dealing with lagging state payments.

“We asked for her resignation,” Duffy Blackburn, treasurer for the center’s Executive Board of Directors, said Monday. “The board accepted Ms. Hensley’s resignation this morning.”

A memo, obtained by The Herald-News, was sent to center staff Monday afternoon regarding her resignation. Mary Pat Frye, the center’s coordinated care unit director, will serve as interim executive director during the transition,

according to the memo.

It was reported earlier Monday that effective April 1, the Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging will soon take over the center’s Meals on Wheels program effective.

The NIAAA provides federal grant dollars to local agencies, including the Senior Services Center, to help administer programs. The $1.1 million Meals on Wheels program accounts for about a quarter of the center’s $3.8 million annual budget.

Lucia West-Jones, executive director for Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging, said she received a call from Jill Zaki, the president for the center’s Board of Directors, Monday morning.

“I talked with the [board chairperson] this morning.

They felt that her leadership was not what they needed at this time,” West-Jones said.

The resignation is part of a series of coming structural

changes at the nonprofit, said Blackburn, who also serves as the Will County Auditor. The board also recently accepted the resignation of Janet Contos, the center’s development director. The two director positions will be combined.

“We have to be more cost-effective,” he said. “Our senior services are going to have to deal with becoming lean. This is just the start of the cuts.”

Blackburn said the conversation with Hensley this morning was “amicable.”

“We thanked her for many years of service,” he said. “She said she would be willing to help and consult going forward.”

Hensley had been with the center for 34 years, according to her LinkedIn profile. Blackburn said he wasn’t sure about her exact tenure, but said she had been with the center for “several years.”

Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging will take over Meals on Wheels program

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging will take over the Senior Services Center of Will County’s Meals on Wheels program effective April 1.

The changeover allows the struggling Senior Services Center to gain some financial footing after maxing out its line of credit while dealing with lagging state payments.

The agency provides federal grant dollars to local agencies, including the Senior Services Center, to help administer programs.

The decision to take over the food delivery program comes just two months after center officials announced they would scale back its days of services amid a financial crisis. Late state payments have forced the center to use its line of credit for payroll and other expenses.

The changeover prevents the program from going under

completely.

Board members for the Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging voted on the changeover March 13, said Lucia West-Jones, executive director for NIAAA. The decision to take over the program “was not an easy one to make,” West-Jones said.

“They are programmed beyond their means,” West-Jones said. “When your state funding is late, and you start to draw on your line of credit to make up for it, and you don’t watch that line as closely as you should, you get out of sync. Those finances have to be watched very, very carefully.”

However, with limited funds moving forward, the focus will be on home delivery, WestJones said. The agency likely will have to reduce the number of community dining sites served throughout the county.

Mary Pat Frye, case coordinator director for the center, said staff and officials at the NIAAA will “work closely” on

a smooth transition.

Earlier this year, the center’s Meals on Wheels program was cut from five days to four days a week, eliminating Wednesdays. Employees also were given mandatory and optional furlough days. The state owes between $400,000 and $500,000 in allocated funding to the center, but hasn’t kept up on payments, causing a serious cash flow problem.

In the meantime, the center is lobbying local governments for additional money to help pay down its $400,000 line of credit, Frye said.

Frye said the center awaits responses from the city of Joliet, Lockport and a few others.

Frye said she planned to go to Channahon Township’s board meeting Monday night to request $2,000.

The nonprofit agency serves about 64,000 residents. About 27,000 are located in Joliet.

“We are working diligently to get our finances more in a balance,” Frye said.

Illinois Audubon Society makes biggest acquisition ever for park

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Pilcher Park is sometimes called “a hidden gem,” which is both a compliment and a quandary.

The park and adjoining woodlands comprise about 640 acres that will grow with the addition of 80 acres donated by the Illinois Audubon Society.

“This is an old woodland that has really held its own in an age of invasive plants,” said Tom Clay, executive director of the Illinois Audubon Society. Clay described the bird watching opportunities at Pilcher Park as “wonderful. The woodpeckers in there were just thick.”

The high quality of natural land is the major reason the state society chose Pilcher Park as the place to make its biggest ever acquisition of public lands. The land cost about $1.9 million, with the Illinois Audubon Society spending about $540,000, and the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation contributing a grant of nearly $1.4 million.

Back home, the beauty of Pilcher Park is not always recognized, said Rita Renwick, a Joliet resident who is on the Illinois Audubon Society board.

“It’s a part of the community that’s been overlooked and undervalued for some time,” Renwick said.

Hence the term “hidden gem.” Not enough local people appreciate Pilcher Park, Renwick said.

“It’s got mature woods. It has endangered species in it.

And, it has beautiful spring flowers,” Renwick said.

$2 million in park spending

The park is getting some attention this year.

The Joliet Park District, which owns the park, will spend about $2 million out of the $19 million tax referendum

approved in November on road and trail repairs, as well as gates that, for the first time, will block public access after

dark.

The park is located northwest of U.S. Route 30 and Gougar Road. The entrance is

off U.S. Route 30 at Highland Park Drive.

The gates are needed, said Katie Zaban, natural areas co-

ordinator for the woodlands area.

JOLIET – Spring has come, but the snow refuses to leave.

Joliet was hit with snow Monday morning and meteorologists forecast snow accumulations between 2 to 4 inches in the Joliet and Chicago area.

The weather may only get messier.

National Weather Service meteorologists expect a 20 percent chance of showers after 4 p.m. Tuesday, with a high temperature close to 44 degrees. There is a chance of showers and thunderstorms Tuesday night after 7 p.m.

Monday’s snow blanketed the roads, making them hazardous for travel. Quite a few car accidents occurred Monday morning throughout the city, Joliet police Lt. Stephen Breen said. Most of the collisions involved damage to property, such as fender benders, but no injuries, he said.

“We have quite a few [police] units tied up,” Breen said Monday morning. “We have officers actively investigating numerous crashes this morning. It seems like people forgot they need to slow down and give themselves more time.”

Illinois State Police reported 18 weather-related accidents throughout Will and Grundy counties as of Monday morning. The accidents included personal injuries and property damage.

The snow is the result of a pressure system from the southwest region of the U.S. bringing moisture to the Chicago area, said Bill Nelson, National Weather Service meteorologist. He said the moisture intersected with the cold air, creating snow instead of rain.

“It’s not unusual for snow in March … [but] this amount and this late in March is a little bit more unusual,” Nelson said.

Wilmington, Braidwood to gain new dollar stores

“We’re hoping for this to be a cornerstone for commercial growth in the area,” he said.

In Wilmington, Orr said residents are on both sides of a second dollar store coming

into town.

“It’s a mixed bag,” he said.

“Some are happy to see something in the area, some say we already have one and we don’t need it. But it’s just a matter of business. You want to provide residents with as many options to shop as possible.”

City Administrator Tony Graff said Dollar General could do well in that location with the traffic coming through.

“We’re not actively marketing to any specific business right now,” Graff said.

Graff said residents have commented at public meetings that they want to see corporate chains such as Dunkin’ Donuts, Dairy Queen and Taco Bell. But the city has little control over businesses deciding to move into town.

The southern Will County cities of Wilmington and Braidwood each have a dollar store.

Wilmington has a Family Dollar and Braidwood has a Dollar General. But by the end of this year, both also will have a Dollar General and Family Dollar within their borders.

The two dollar stores are expected to be big competitors on the national stage after Dollar General failed to purchase Family Dollar for $9.1 billion in cash, Reuters said.

And if a merger between Family Dollar and Dollar Tree goes through, the united company would take the greater share of the U.S. discount retail market than Dollar General, the current leader.

“Any type of commercial, retail growth through the city is positive,” Wilmington Mayor Marty Orr said. “We do have a Family Dollar in town, but by adding the Dollar General it provides more people the opportunity to shop locally.”

Ron Sly, a retired New Lenox village employee, said Monday afternoon he didn’t plan on attending the debate with Mayor Tim Baldermann and resident Andrew Englebrecht. But in a news release issued about 8:20 p.m., Sly said he planned to attend after learning the debate will be moderated by a neutral party.

“I was originally approached to participate in the debate by two of my opponents’ supporters and there was no indication the debate would be run independently,” Sly said in the news release. “Once I learned members of the media would be involved in creating the questions and moderating

Sly initially said the debate was “orchestrated by the mayor’s campaign.” He was contacted by village Trustees Annette Bowden and Nancy Dye to participate, but he said the two are working for Baldermann’s campaign.

Baldermann rejected Sly’s claim, saying he too was asked

by Bowden and Dye if he would participate. The two are supporting his election, but they’re

not working for his campaign, he said.

“If Ron thinks this is some sort of setup, then he’s suggesting the newspaper reporters are in on it as well, which is ridiculous,” he said.

Bowden said she contacted Sly several times about participating in the debate, but he declined. She said she was coordinating the debate because residents were asking for one and she thought it was only fair if they could learn about plans the candidates have for New Lenox. She said she invited local media to moderate the debate to keep it neutral and that questions during the debate will come from them.

New Lenox has three mayoral candidates running in the April 7 election. Sly and Englebrecht will challenge two-term incumbent Baldermann, who ran unopposed for mayor in 2011.

Englebrecht said Monday he planned on being at the debate.

JOLIET – Firefighters believe embers in garbage cans started two unrelated fires Sunday evening.

The first incident was reported at 6:25 p.m. in the 4700 block of Dove Court.

“The homeowner had a fire in the fire pit [Sunday afternoon] and put the ashes into a garbage can next to the shed,”

Battalion Chief Jeff Carey said.

“About an hour later, the family was inside eating dinner and smelled the smoke.”

The fire destroyed the shed and spread to the house, causing heavy damage to the second floor and attic, Carey said.

Everyone got out of the home safely before firefighters arrived, but the blaze caused an estimated $135,000 in damage.

Man defending himself wants a new judge

THE HERALD–NEWS ROMEOVILLE – The Romeoville Police Department will conduct a “Gun Buy-Back” program April 11.

The event will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 11 at the Romeoville Police Department’s bond/release entrance, located at the west end of the police building, 1050 W. Romeo Road in Romeoville.

Residents can turn in firearms, no questions asked, according to a department news release. Citizens can remain anonymous and will not face any penalties for unlawful fire-

arms.

Police officers across the country see many instances where suspects, particularly juveniles, commit a crime with an older weapon that the rightful owner no longer uses, has forgotten about or has lost track of, according to the news release. The department wants to reduce firearms within the community that fall into this category.

Sixty dollars will be paid on the spot for each weapon turned in. Ammunition may be turned in as well, but there will be no payment to individuals turning in ammunition only.

Firearms should be unloaded and placed in a bag or other container and transported in the trunk or rear area of your vehicle, according to the release. An officer will take possession of your firearm at the department.

For those with no transportation options, or who prefer to have a police officer transport a weapon, contact the police department and assistance will be provided on a case-by-case basis.

JOLIET – A lawyer defending himself on charges he tried to hire another jail inmate to kill his estranged wife appeared before a new judge Monday.

Robert W. Gold-Smith, 52, said Judge Daniel Rozak has shown bias against him over the past four years and has asked for a substitution before his case goes to trial.

Dave Carlson, acting as chief judge this week, told Gold-Smith he Robert W. was not familiar with the Gold-Smith case, which pleased the defendant. That will require a few days for Carlson to review notes and transcripts before ruling whether the case should be moved to a different courtroom.

Carlson asked Gold-Smith the same questions Rozak has on prior occasions about representing himself. GoldSmith confirmed he will continue to represent himself on the solicitation for murder charge from 2011, but allow the Will County Public Defender’s office to deal with his domestic battery charges from 2010.

“I’ll let the public defender deal with that. It’s a minor case,” Gold-Smith said, noting if he was found guilty on that charge, he already has served enough jail time to fulfill his sentence.

“They’re all important cases,” Carlson warned GoldSmith.

“This is the big one,” he replied, bringing a chuckle from most people in the courtroom.

In November 2010, GoldSmith’s then-wife sought an order of protection after he allegedly grabbed her by the hair and punched her in

the face as they walked out of a courtroom, police said.

Gold-Smith was locked up in March 2011 after reportedly violating that order of protection and allegedly approaching two jail inmates on separate occasions to kill her.

Carlson planned to call Gold-Smith back to court Tuesday, but the jailed attorney said Wednesday would work better for his schedule.

Jackie Sparrow, president of the rescue squad district, said it was seeking becoming a taxing rescue district so it could hire staff for daytime hours to operate the ambulance for both the Mazon Fire Protection District and the Verona Kinsman Fire Protection District when volunteers are typically at work.

Currently the ambulance is funded through fundraisers and fees for the service, which Sparrow said are often negotiated much lower than the actual cost of transporting a patient due to insurance carriers.

MORRIS – Despite an emergency motion to get a referendum question for a rescue squad district on the April 7 ballot, Grundy County Judge Lance Peterson ruled Monday the question could not be added because election results could be at risk.

In December, Peterson granted the right to organize the Mazon/Verona/Kinsman Rescue Squad District, as well as to place on the ballot a referendum question asking for tax dollars to be levied for a new Mazon/Verona/Kinsman Rescue Squad District.

The new district plans to service ambulance calls for the Mazon Fire Protection District and the Verona Kinsman Fire Protection District.

The referendum came to the attention of the Grundy County Clerk’s office Friday after staff heard organizer Tamara Halterman on a local radio station discussing the referendum and that the district expected to be on the April ballot. The clerk’s office said it never received the paperwork required to get on the ballot.

“It’s a very unfortunate situation and I feel bad for MVK district, they did a lot of work,” Grundy County Clerk Kay Olson said after the hearing Monday.

The clerk’s office reached the organizers and informed them the referendum was not on the ballot. The district’s law firm Ottosen, Britz, Kelly, Cooper, Gilbert & DiNolfo

filed an emergency motion Friday, which was heard at 9 a.m. Monday in the Grundy County Courthouse.

Brian O’Connor, attorney for the district, said he was told by an employee at the Grundy County Circuit Clerk’s office that the circuit clerk’s office would take the filed paperwork to the Grundy County Clerk’s office.

According to Assistant State’s Attorney Perry Rudman, the circuit clerk’s office said during an investigation they made no such statement and typically an attorney will deliver a copy to the office it is required to go to.

“I’m not deciding whose fault it is today,” Peterson said in court. “But it’s not Ms. Olson’s fault in any way.”

Despite candidate’s claims, fire officials say staff morale not low

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield Fire Protection District and union officials said they don’t agree with a village trustee candidate’s claims that there is low morale among firefighters.

James Sossong, a candidate for the Village Board, participated Thursday in the Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce’s Candidate’s Night forum, claiming there was low morale in the district after former Chief John Eichelberger’s retirement Jan. 2.

“A lot of firemen aren’t happy with the way current management is doing things,” Sossong said Monday. “I’m sure they’re trying to do a number of good things, but the current management doesn’t run things like [Eichelberger] ran them.”

He said the low morale stemmed from the succession process for fire chief. Chief David Riddle was hired three years ago from Channahon as deputy chief. He was chosen as the new chief by the current board over others with more years in the district.

Union, district response

Sossong said firefighters didn’t believe they could advance their careers in Plainfield, and he said some were thinking about moving to other fire districts.

But a union official thought differently.

“From a union standpoint, the morale is very strong,” said Jered Zubaty, president of Plainfield Firefighters Paramedics Local 4560.

Since March of last year, Zubaty said, the district promoted six lieutenants, three battalion chiefs and hired three more full-time firefighters, including its first fulltime female firefighter.

Those promotions resulted from a joint discussion including Eichelberger, Riddle and other top fire officials, Zubaty said.

Riddle said the news of low morale in the district came as a surprise to him.

“More sick time or questionable time use, more grumbling or guys not doing their jobs, I’m not seeing that at all,” Riddle said.

Riddle said he made some adjustments and changes to district operations, but it wasn’t anything drastic.

He also said that while there is steady turnover in the part-time ranks, the district hasn’t lost any firefighters to other districts since he took over.

Fire District Board President Bill Barnes said he hasn’t heard of low morale among firefighters.

“Those are [Sossong’s] opinions,” Barnes said. “I don’t know where he’s coming from.”

Sossong’s history

Sossong heard about low morale from firefighters who confided in him during his 20year career with the fire district, and he wasn’t surprised by the fire and union officials’ response.

“Nobody is going to jeopardize their position and say something that’s going to get them in trouble,” Sossong said.

Sossong said he worked as a volunteer firefighter for the district and was an information technology consultant for it for almost 20 years. His contract was canceled by the district just as he was returning from medical leave last year.

Sossong said he never had a good relationship with the

current board. Barnes said Sossong was let go because Sossong was often on sick

leave and the district trained another IT operator to manage the district’s needs.

There are 971 fire departments in the United States, and only 71 in Illinois, which have earned the classification of ISO Class 2, according to the release. This places the Manhattan Fire Protection District in the top 2 percent of fire departments across the country.

These new ISO classifications become effective June 1.

Fire departments across the country are evaluated at regular intervals, between 7 and 12 years, and given classification by ISO, an advisory organization used by many property insurance companies to help determine their customer’s property insurance premiums.

ISO evaluates and provides classifications to more than 49,000 fire departments across the United States.

MANHATTAN – The Manhattan Fire Protection District was evaluated by the Insurance Services Office in late 2014 and received its revised ISO classification, according to a department news release.

The fire district’s overall ISO classification is represented by two separate ratings, according to the release.

Both ratings have different water supply methods that service the areas: the Fire Protection Service Area and the Fire Department Service.

The FPSA is the response area within the boundaries of the village of Manhattan that is supplied water by the fire hydrant infrastructure, according to the release. The FDS is any area outside village limits beyond 1,000 feet of the fire hydrant infrastructure.

Yard waste pick-up resumes March 30

JOLIET – The city of Joliet and Waste Management would like to remind the residents of Joliet that the resumption of yard waste collection will resume March 30.

The Good Friday holiday on April 3 will not affect Waste Management’s schedule. In observance of the Good Friday holiday, City Hall will be closed April 3 and the parking decks will be free of charge that day and there will be no enforcement of the parking meters, according to a news release from the city.

Residents desiring yard waste collection service are reminded that yard waste must be placed in permanent-type, 33 gallon

refuse containers which are identified with a “YARD WASTE ONLY” or “Y” sticker, or in 32 gallon disposable Kraft paper bags (no “YARD WASTE ONLY” or “Y” sticker necessary).

Yard waste set out for collection in permanent-type containers must have a florescent “YARD WASTE ONLY” or “Y” sticker on the container and be clearly visible from the street.

These “YARD WASTE ONLY” or “Y” stickers are available, free of charge, at all Jewel stores and Certified Warehouse Foods in the City of Joliet and the Joliet Municipal Building at the Information Desk.

Pilcher Park history

Pilcher Park was established in the 1920s when Robert and Nora Pilcher donated 320 acres of what was then

called the Forest of Arden to the city of Joliet, according to a history provided by the Joliet Park District.

Robert Pilcher, a Joliet businessman, bought the land from the estate of Henry D. Higginbotham, who settled on the land. Higginbotham’s heirs later donated another 239 acres, which is called Higginbotham Woods.

Another section of the connecting parks is called Highland Park, a popular site for its Frisbee golf.

The 80-acre tract acquired through the Illinois Audubon Society is encompassed by the park area, but was privately owned. The land is mostly wooded. Acquiring it protects the woods from potential future development, Zaban said.

OBITUARIES ANGELO AGGELOPOULOS Angelo Aggelopoulos, age 82, at rest on Saturday, March 21, 2015, with his loving daughters by his side.

Angelo was born and raised in Joliet, IL and educated in the Joliet school system.

He was a member of the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Joliet.

Angelo was a proud United States Army Veteran serving during the Korean War. After the war, Angelo and his wife Irene became partners in numerous businesses in the Joliet and Wilmington communities.

With his siblings, they opened the Hickory Creek Food Market in Wilmington and left after 4 years. In 1961 they founded Angelo’s Liquors on Broadway Street in Crest Hill and in 1962 they opened Angelo’s Liquors in Wilmington. In 1981, Angelo’s Outdoor Sports Center, Ben Franklin Variety Store and True Value Hardware were established.

The Pic-A-Flick Video Stores with 4 locations were opened shortly thereafter.

Angelo is survived by his loving daughters, Cathy Aggelopoulos of New Lenox, Patti Van Auken of Minooka, IL, and Georgine (Jay) Penney of Evans, GA; grandchildren, Melissa (Kevin) Oman, Kristen Van Auken and Sarah Van Auken, Chad, Sydney and Taylor Penney; great-grandchildren, Layla Oman, Penelope and Emma Skrzypczynski; siblings, Mary (Dominic) Mancuso, Nicholas Aggelopoulos; brother-inlaw, Nick (the late Rita) Andrew; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Irene Aggelopoulos (nee Calamaras); parents, George and Patricia Aggelopoulos; sisters, Rita Andrew, Marilyn Metros and Barbara Rash.

Born: April 2, 1922; in Peotone, IL Died: March 21, 2015; in New Lenox, IL Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Blatt, age 92, of Elwood, IL passed away Saturday, March 21, 2015, at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, IL. Born April 2, 1922, in Peotone, IL to the late Godfrey and Eleanor Arnstrom. She grew up on the farm in Peotone and then graduated from Joliet Township High School. After graduation she married Lt. Fred H. Blatt, Jr. of Symerton (USAAF).

During World War II, Fred went to China as the replacement fighter pilot with Gen. Chenmult’s Flying Tigers.

She waited on the farm until 1943 when he returned and they moved to Elwood to raise a family. They ran the local grocery store and after that closed she worked as a secretary at Laraway Grade School, retiring in 1966. Her husband was on the fire department and was employed at the Joliet Arsenal, was the rural mail carrier, and soon became the Postmaster in Elwood. Betty was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Wilmington, IL. Surviving are one son, Pete and wife, Liz Blatt of Elwood; two grandchildren, Kristi and James Campbell of Las Vegas, NV; one sister, Ruth (the late Ray) Smith of Wilmington; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Fred H. Blatt, Jr. in 1983; daughter, Cheryl; three brothers, Paul, Eugene, and Tom Arnstrom; and one sister, Margaret Peterson.

Family and friends will meet at the United Methodist Church in Wilmington, Thursday, March 26, 2015, for funeral services at 11:00 a.m. Interment Mapel Hill Cemetery in Elwood. Visitation will be at the R.W. Patterson Funeral Homes, Ltd.

He worked for various companies in Sales and Marketing and lastly as a Commercial Insurance Manager.

Both he and Marilyn retired and moved to Nixa, Missouri in May 2003 from New Lenox, Illinois, where they had lived since 1976.

Retirement kept them both very busy; First Evangelical Free Church, SWMO Model A Ford Club of Springfield, and OSSSM (Scandinavian Club).

Rolf was preceded in death by his father, Alrik, in March 1961; and his mother, Bertha, in July 1985.

He leaves behind his wonderful wife, Marilyn; and two sons, David, wife Karyn; and grandchildren,

Satchel, Mason, Serik, and Payton; and Sven, wife Rhonda; and granddaughter, Taliesyn.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 28, at 1 pm at First Evangelical Free Church, 5500 S Southwood, Springfield, MO, 65804.

Marcia Ann Bosecker Wing, 73, of Mechanicsburg passed away March 21, 2015, in Van Crest of Urbana.

Marcia was born on November 12, 1941, to Wayne Leroy Bosecker and Dorothea Fern Hanback Bosecker in Woodson, Illinois. Marcia graduated from Blytheville High School in Arkansas and earned a BS in English Education and a Masters in counseling from Wittenberg University.

As a girl, Marcia moved several times with her family for her father’s job with Caterpillar. They lived in Arkansas, Kentucky, Illinois and Ohio, meeting scores of different people, moves which helped shape her for life.

Marcia worked as an English teacher at Kettering High School and an English teacher and counselor at Urbana High school where she met Martha Wing Kerns who introduced Marcia to her brother, Marcia’s future husband, John C. Wing. Marcia and John were married in 1969 and were the parents

Marcia was an avid reader, gardener and cook who won honors for her pies at the Champaign County Fair. She was also a tireless volunteer in her community. In the 1980s, she worked with her church and community to bring a family of Laotian refugees to Mechanicsburg.

She initiated after-school tutoring at the Episcopal Church of Our Savior, was a member of Goshen Garden Club and served on the board of the Mechanicsburg Public Library. Marcia was a beloved guidance counselor at Mechanicsburg High School and touched the lives of many students there.

She was inducted into the Episcopal Society of St. Simeon and St. Anna as a living example of Christian witness and for outstanding service to the church.

Marcia was a loving wife, mother and also grandmother to JP, Sam and Grace Rozmus, Jack Wing, Sophie and Will Boeck, Cecilia and Charlie Bradford and Mallory and Joel Bostick. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Becky (Dr. Larry) Fishbaugh of Paulding, OH; and nieces, Kelly Armfelt, Sharon Frey, Lisa Kavanaugh, Beth Gundrum and Molly Kerns; and nephews, Brent and Jeff Fishbaugh and Bill Kerns.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, and a sister, Sandra O’Neill; as well as her sister-in-law, Martha Kerns; and brother-in-law, David Wing.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, at Skillman, McDonald and Vernon Funeral Home in Mechanicsburg. Funeral services are Friday, March 27, at 2:00 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour, Mechanicsburg, the Rev. Tim West, and the Rev. Bob Ficks as celebrants.

Carolyn L. Donley, 83, of Bloomington, passed away at 12:19 a.m. on Sunday, March 22, 2015, at her residence.

Her Celebration of Life service will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, 2015, at Kibler-Brady-Ruestman Memorial Home in Bloomington. Cremation rites have been accorded.

Carolyn was born on September 12, 1931, in Joliet, a daughter to Leonard and Lucille Dieter. She married Leonard Donley. He preceded her in death on March 26, 1974.

Surviving are her children, Richard (Chris) Donley of Arizona, Robert (Deb) Donley of Joliet, Terry (Gordene) Donley of Joliet and Heather Donley of Bloomington.

She is also survived by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter, Sandra Donley; five brothers and a sister.

Carolyn was born and raised in Joliet, Illinois. While living in Bloomington, she worked in food service at the former Americana Health Care in Normal. After her retirement she worked in food service in District 87 schools. She passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends. The family wishes to thank her special care givers, her granddaughter, Renee and Paul.

Jane and John had no children. She is survived several cousins.

She worked for 27 years as auditing supervisor at Sears.

She was close to the Robert Park’s family and Michael McKeon and their wonderful boys and grandson.

Her neighbors Ralph Cecchi and Pat Gossman families were very close and helped her so much, for which she was always grateful.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 26, 2015, at 10:30 am at the Woodlawn Funeral Home.

ACLU: Chicago police had higher stop-andfrisk rate than NYC

CHICAGO – Chicago police officers initiated stop, question and frisk encounters at a much higher rate last summer than their New York City counterparts ever did, and just like with New York’s heavily criticized program, Chicago blacks and other racial minorities were disproportionately targeted, according to a civil liberties group.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois released a report Monday saying it identified more than 250,000 Chicago stopand-frisk encounters in which there were no arrests from May through August 2014. African-Americans accounted for nearly three-quarters of those stopped, even though they make up about a third of the city’s population. On a per capita basis, Chicago police stopped 93.6 people per 1,000 residents, or more than four times New York’s peak rate of 22.9 stops per 1,000 residents, which happened during the same fourmonth period of 2011.

“The Chicago Police Department stops a shocking number of innocent people,” said Harvey Grossman, the ACLU’s legal director. “And just like New York, we see that African Americans are singled out for these searches.”

People were far more likely to be stopped in predominantly black communities and blacks were more likely to be the target of stops in predominantly white neighborhoods, the study found.

For example, African-Americans accounted for 15 percent of the stops in the Jefferson Park area, even though they made up just one percent of its population.

The ACLU said it also found police gave no “legally sufficient

WASHINGTON – In a dispute over a proposed Confederate battle flag license plate, the Supreme Court struggled Monday to balance worries about government censorship and concerns that offensive messages could, at worst, incite violence.

Nearly 150 years after the end of the Civil War, the justices heard arguments in a case over Texas’ refusal to issue a license plate bearing the battle flag.

Nine other states allow drivers to display plates with the flag, which remains both a potent image of heritage and a racially charged symbol of repression.

Specialty license plates are big business in Texas. They brought in $17.6 million last year and state officials said there are now nearly 450 messages to choose from, from “Choose Life” to the Boy Scouts and hamburger chains.

The state rarely rejects a specialty plate, but it did turn down a request by the Texas division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans for a license plate with its logo bearing the battle flag. The group’s lawsuit led to Monday’s hearing. A decision in Walker v.

His aspirational appeal on Monday, aimed at America’s most conservative voters, could quickly run into challenges in winning over moderate voters – and eventually deep difficulties in governing should Cruz win the White House.

But it’s a message that Cruz, the first major 2016 contender to declare himself a candidate, is expected to forcefully emphasize in the coming year before voters start to pick nominees.

“God’s blessing has been on America from the very beginning of this nation, and I be-

lieve that God isn’t done with Americans,” Cruz declared at Liberty University, a Christian school founded by the late Rev. Jerry Falwell.

“I believe in you. I believe in the power of millions of courageous conservatives rising up to reignite the promise of America. And that is why, today, I am announcing that I am running for president of the United States of America.”

Cruz won’t be the sole GOP contender for long. Two Senate colleagues, Kentucky’s Rand Paul and Florida’s Marco Rubio, are eyeing campaign launches soon. And former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, are expected to follow, among others.

The 44-year-old Cruz is betting his White House hopes on profoundly conservative voters and their opposition to policies they find abhorrent.

Within such circles, there is deep distrust of the IRS, which was revealed last year to have been scrutinizing tea party

groups’ nonprofit status.

Scuttling President Barack Obama’s health care legislation, called by some “Obamacare,” is a rallying cry, as well. And abortion is a major issue for Christian conservatives who have tremendous sway in the lead-off caucus and primary election states of Iowa and South Carolina.

During his 30-minute kickoff speech, delivered like a sermon without notes or cue cards, Cruz made clear he sees electoral potential in his unbending advocacy.

“Today, roughly half of born-again Christians aren’t voting – they’re staying home,” Cruz said. “Imagine, instead, millions of people of faith all across America coming out to the polls and voting our values.”

After his election to the Senate in 2012, the former Texas solicitor general quickly established himself as an uncompromising figure willing to take on Democrats and sometimes Republicans, too.

By ODED BALILTY The Associated Press JERUSALEM – Seven Jewish siblings who died in a devastating New York house fire were laid to rest in Jerusalem on Monday at an emotional ceremony attended by several thousand mourners.

Friends and relatives of the Sassoon family attended the service, as well as supporters who only learned of the tragedy through the news. The chief rabbi of Israel and mayor of Jerusalem also paid their respects.

The bodies of the children, ages 5 to 16, were flown to Israel overnight from New York and were immediately taken to Jerusalem in a convoy es-

“Why seven? Seven beautiful lilies,” the children’s father, Gabriel Sassoon, cried out in an anguished eulogy.

“So pure. So pure.”

He recounted how his children enjoyed studying the Torah and other Jewish texts.

“They were such innocent children,” he said, his voice choking up. He later called out the names of his children, one by one.

Sassoon described how his wife, although burned, managed to jump out of a second-floor window to try and get help to save her children.

He said he is drawing on

his faith for strength.

The children’s bodies, wrapped in shrouds, were placed on stretchers for the memorial service, held in a room at Jerusalem’s main cemetery packed with scores of mourners. Thousands more stood outside.

Some mourners rocked back and forth in prayer, their cheeks wet with tears, as they listened to the eulogies. Afterward, many in the crowd walked with the family in a procession to bury the bodies.

David Lau, Israel’s chief rabbi for Ashkenazi – or European – Jews, described the fire as an unspeakable tragedy and urged the family to remain strong. “Each one is a flower in God’s garden,” he said.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – What’s one thing astronaut Scott Kelly can’t do without when he moves into space this week for a year? A belt.

Kelly went beltless during his five-month mission at the International Space Station a few years back, and he hated how his shirttails kept Scott floating out of Kelly his pants. So this time, the 51-year-old retired Navy captain packed “a military, tactical-style thing” that can hold a tool pouch.

Actually, scratch pouch.

He prefers “superhero utility belt.”

Kelly’s partner on the yearlong stay at the space station – Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko – can’t do without his vitamins.

When their Soyuz rocket blasts off from Kazakhstan on Friday afternoon, three bottles of over-age-50 vitamins will be on board.

After more than two years of training, Kelly and Kornienko are eager to get going.

It will be the longest space mission ever for NASA, and the longest in almost two decades for the Russian Space Agency, which holds the record at 14 months.

Medicine and technology have made huge leaps since then, and the world’s space agencies need to know how the body adapts to an entire year of weightlessness before

committing to even longer Mars expeditions. More yearlong missions are planned, with an ultimate goal of 12 test subjects.

The typical station stint is six months.

“We know a lot about six months. But we know almost nothing about what happens between six and 12 months in space,” said NASA’s space station program scientist Julie Robinson.

Among the more common space afflictions: weakened bones and muscles, and impaired vision and immune system. Then there is the psychological toll.

Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka, a frequent flier who will accompany Kelly and Kornienko into orbit, predicts it will be the psychological – not physical – effects that will be toughest on the one-year crew.

“Being far away from Earth, being sort of crammed, having few people to interact with,” Padalka said. He’ll break the record for most time spent in space during his six-month stay, closing in on a grand total of 900 days by the time he returns to Earth in September.

Neither Kelly nor Kornienko, however, worries about himself. They fret about the family and friends they are leaving behind for an entire year – until next March.

“If something happens ... you’re not coming home, no matter what it is. You’re not coming back,” Kelly said in an interview earlier this year with The Associated Press.

Police: No evidence of gang rape at University of Virginia

By LARRY O’DELL The Associated Press CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – A four-month police investigation into an alleged gang rape at the University of Virginia that Rolling Stone magazine described in graphic detail produced no evidence of the attack and was stymied by the accuser’s unwillingness

to cooperate, authorities said Monday.

The article, titled “A rape on campus,” focused on a student identified only as “Jackie” who said she was raped at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity more than two years earlier.

It described a hidden culture of sexual violence fueled by binge drinking at the college. Police said they found no

evidence of that either.

There were numerous discrepancies between the article, published in November 2014, and what investigators found, said Charlottesville police Chief Timothy Longo, who took care not to accuse Jackie of lying.

The case is suspended, not closed, and despite investigators not finING evidence years

later it “doesn’t mean that something terrible didn’t happen to Jackie,” Longo said.

He appealed for anyone with information about any sexual violence to immediately alert police, and expressed hope Jackie may one day feel comfortable explaining what really happened.

“There’s a difference between a false allegation and

something that happened that may have been different than what was described in that article,” Longo said.

Asked if Jackie would be charged with making a false report, he said: “Absolutely not.”

Jackie’s attorney, Palma Pustilnik, said she would have no comment on the investigation.

He added “huge challenges remain” but the agreements to be reached this week will help pave the way for stability and security. Kerry said

the joint appearance at Camp David, along with the White House meetings, should serve as notice to the Taliban that the U.S.-Afghan relationship is back on track and they should negotiate rather than fight.

“All of these underscore to any Taliban, to anybody who wants to engage in violence

that we are prepared in the long term to support our friends in Afghanistan,” Kerry said.

Obama has promised to pull remaining U.S. troops out by the end of his presidency.

But deficiencies in the Afghan security forces, heavy casualties in the ranks of the Afghan army and police, a fragile new government and fears that Islamic State fighters could gain a foothold in Afghanistan have combined to persuade Obama to slow the withdrawal.

Instead of trimming the current U.S. force of 9,800 to 5,500 by the end of this year, U.S. officials say the administration now might keep many of them there well into 2016. Obama has said that after that, the U.S. will maintain only an embassy-based security force in Kabul of perhaps 1,000 troops.

Ghani, who has expressed worries about Islamic State militants trying to gain a foothold in his country, has pressed to keep more U.S. troops there longer, but Obama has promised to end both wars in Afghanistan before his presidency ends in January 2017.

CAMP DAVID, Maryland – In a show of unity, U.S. and Afghan officials laid the groundwork for new relations between the two countries Monday, including plans to seek American funding to maintain an Afghan security force of 352,000 and long-term counterterrorism efforts. Discussions over future U.S. troop levels continue as the war winds down.

In an all-day session at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland’s Catoctin mountains, dozens of U.S. and Afghan officials, including Secretary of State John Kerry, Defense Secretary Ash Carter, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and chief executive Abdullah Abdullah gathered to relaunch a relationship strained by nearly 14 years of war and often-testy relations with former Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

During the meeting, the U.S. agreed to seek funding through 2017 for an Afghan force of 352,000, a level the nation has

yet to meet, Carter said. U.S. officials said the Afghan government is trying to improve recruiting to make up for security forces who leave the service.

They also agreed to require the Afghan government to complete specific reforms and meet other milestones in order to receive up to $800 million.

U.S. officials said the Afghans suggested the incentive-based funding idea. The leaders of the two nations also said they would restart routine ministerial-level Defense and State Department meetings.

Ghani is to meet with President Barack Obama on Tuesday, an engagement during which officials expect the U.S. to make clear its decision to slow the pace of the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan. Ghani and Abdullah fought a contentious election last year to replace Karzai, and their power-sharing agreement was lauded by Kerry, who played a key role in brokering it.

To the Editor: The fact that the president, his Cabinet, and many democratic members of Congress deliberately not only snubbed, but boycotted, the Israeli Prime Minister appearances and speeches is pathetic and the height of disrespect.

No matter what your religious acceptance is or isn’t, to snub Israel or any other ally is a bad social and/or political exercise.

Israel is our only truly free ally in the Mediterranean, Middle East area. They are due the respect and decency of that position. I can only wonder what the rest of the countries in the world think of our rudeness and lack of appreciation of the benefit of this ally. Is this the manner in which we want others to know how we treat our friends?

I find it difficult to imagine how any self-respecting American supporter of Israel and its right to live in peace could vote for a member of the Democratic Party, for any office in the future.

I know I won’t!

Is the new Illinois Democratic group really for Dems?

A newly formed group of self-described “center-left” Democrats claims to have secured $20 million in commitments to spend on state legislative races here.

But that $20 million apparently isn’t meant to counter Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s infamous $20 million campaign stash, which he said will be used to support his allies and punish his enemies. Indeed, the Democratic group appears to be promoting what could be seen as a somewhat softer, neo-liberal version of Raunerism.

Illinoisans for Growth and Opportunity is not a traditional Democratic group, as its name more than implies. The press release announcing the group’s launch blasted Democratic leadership, including former Gov. Pat Quinn and both legislative leaders, for passing a budget last year “that they knew would create a financial crisis.”

The group also bemoans the lack of manufacturing employment, the state’s horrible credit rating and its poor business climate ratings, without specifically endorsing any real world

fixes like workers’ compensation reform.

The ILGO blames all these problems on unspecified “special interests” which have had “far too much influence with legislative majorities in setting public policy.”

In interviews last week, the leaders of the group refused to specify which Democratic-allied special interests they were talking about, but they did point to the ultra-liberal Chicago Teachers Union as an organization which takes hardline stances without regard to “reality.”

The idea, apparently, is to create a well-funded alternate path for Democrats who may fear upsetting organized labor and other traditional party allies this year. The group doesn’t appear to be an overtly Rauneresque “anti-union” organization, but they are definitely not intending to echo organized labor’s positions, claiming that they’re “not bound by the constructs” of the party and its traditional allies.

Further evidence of this is that the new organization appears mainly designed to

VIEWS Rich Miller buttress Democrats who find themselves in tough primary races. “We’re not very interested in the balance of power as relates to Democrats vs. Republicans,” said an official with the organization. The hottest Democratic primaries lately have been fought between activist union-allied candidates and business-backed candidates.

So far, though, specifics are almost completely absent. Usually, it’s pretty easy to assess where a Statehouse organization stands. They have priority lists and even lists of legislation which they support and oppose.

No such list currently exists for Illinoisans for Growth and Opportunity.

The group’s leaders say they will be “communicating very clearly” and “working with the leaders and caucuses” throughout the spring session. But so far at least, they aren’t taking a stance on things like taxation.

“We’re not advocating that you raise taxes, and we’re not advocating that you cut spending,” said another group leader.

Instead, they say they want a “holistic” approach. They are clearly interested in protecting some state spending, claiming that there are many state programs which are “important” for Illinoisans.

Despite their harsh talk about their party’s legislative leadership, they claim that they’ve reached out to the caucus leaders to assure them that “we have their backs.”

And while they did identified a handful of board members, financing will likely be done mostly in the dark. The group has formed a nonprofit 501(c) (4) group, which will allow contributors to remain anonymous. That money and other public contributions will then be funneled to an independent expenditure committee.

The general consensus under the Dome after news first broke about ILGO is that it’s probably little more than a Rauner front organization.

The three publicly identified

board members have contributed relatively few actual campaign dollars in the past, and one of them is married to a prominent Rauner supporter.

That’s leading some to believe that Rauner’s super-wealthy pals (many of whom have also contributed big bucks to Mayor Emanuel, who has ties to the firm which is handling the new organization’s activities) will be the real force behind the ILGO’s “dark money” fund.

The ILGO’s news release, which was so critical of the state’s Democratic leadership it purports to support, had as its main thrust fixing this fiscal year’s budget problem, which is currently the biggest Statehouse topic by far. Quite a few Senate Democrats said that it looked like the press release was aimed directly at them because they weren’t fully cooperating with Rauner on the budget fix.

It’s difficult to argue with any of that.

Flyers ready to cap memorable season

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – In an era when many top women’s basketball players don’t play their entire careers at one college, Lewis University’s team is an anomaly.

Among the squads who are competing in today’s NCAA Division II Elite Eight in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, coach Lisa Carlsen’s team is the lone school which only has players who came to its program directly out of high school.

That strong bond among its players, which helped produce a 23-0 start and the Flyers’ first No. 1 ranking, is one of the biggest strengths going for No. 4 Lewis as it prepares to meet No. 2 Limestone at 8:30 tonight in the final quarterfinal game.

Seniors Jess Reinhart, Nikki Nellen and Kristin Itschner have seen action for four straight years and rank among the school’s all-time leaders in games played.

Reinhart is seventh in points scored while redshirt junior Jamie Johnson is ninth and junior Mariyah Brawner-Henley ranks 10th. Nellen is the all-time assists leader while Brawner-Henley is third and Reinhart ranks fourth in all-time rebounding at the school.

“Since our freshman year, all of this year’s seniors knew that we had the potential to be a great team, but we just needed some time in order to get everything together,” Nellen said. “We’re very excited about where we’re at and we have big hopes for ourselves. I feel like we had a really hard year with the teams we faced, so I feel that we’re definitely prepared.

“We’ve worked really hard the past four years to get here and we believed in ourselves and in each other. None of us knew each other when we came here, but we all meshed really well. I have some friends on this team that I know are going to be life-long friends.”

Having been through so much together the past few years, including the many highs in their current 31-2 season, the Flyers feel confident heading into their initial Elite Eight.

“We’ve built lifelong friendships,” Johnson said. “And it wasn’t just the work that we’ve put in this season. It’s been four years of a lot of us being here together and grinding it out. It’s been a journey and wouldn’t have picked any other group of girls to go through that with.

“It’s nice to say that we were undefeated and No. 1 at one point this season. You set goals for yourself at the

PLAINFIELD – Walks and errors are killers. Pitchers know that. Coaches know that. So do position players.

Plainfield East’s goals heading into the new baseball season are simple: limit walks and errors.

If the Bengals can accomplish those goals, it should help them improve on their 15-18-1 record of a season ago.

“We need to cut down on free passes,” Plainfield East coach Adam O’Reel said. “We do not strike out a ton of batters, so we need to pitch to contact and play defense, which is one of our strengths.”

A returning battery, dedication to defense and better control on the mound could keep Plainfield East in games.

“I expect us to compete on every pitch and every at-bat and if we do that, the wins will take care of themselves,” O’Reel said.

Plainfield East returns three senior starters in pitcher/outfielder Drew DeMumbrum, catcher Mike McGee and infielder Anthony Bryan.

DeMumbrum had 30 hits and scored 24 times. McGee, an Oakland University recruit, hit .318 with 23 RBIs and 19 walks. Both are starting their third varsity season and were All-Southwest Prairie Conference selections a year ago. Bryan, who will attend Millikin, led the team with 28 runs.

“We’re going to look to DeMumbrum, McGee and Bryan to be our vocal and emotional leaders,” O’Reel said. “All three will lead by example.

They play the game the right way.”

A key offensively will be cutting down on 191 strikeouts of a season ago.

It equates to nearly six a game. That could be a challenge with a young, inexperienced lineup.

“A lot of our success depends on some of our newcomers this year,” O’Reel said. “There is constant competition right now to find the best nine players to put on the field every day.”

Wide-open positions have created interesting and competitive practices at East.

“We have a lot of guys that really buy into the program and want to compete every day for the team, not just for themselves,” O’Reel said. “Practices have been energetic and loose. Those things need to carry on throughout the season.”

Leading those underclassmen will be junior first baseman Michael Sullivan, junior pitcher Mitch Koran and sophomore outfielder D.J. Donofrio.

East should be solid defensively if a young pitching staff can cut down on walks.

DeMumbrum, an all-Southwest Prairie Conference last season, will lead the Plainfield East pitching staff this season.

DeMumbrum will anchor a young pitching staff, which has yet to take form. He went 5-2 with a 2.10 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 50 innings a year ago.

He is on pace to break the school’s season and career marks in every major pitching category.

“DeMumbrum will lead the staff,” O’Reel said. “It’s up to a group of guys

early in the season to compete for the remaining two spots in the conference rotation.”

Koran is expected to be among them.

Other candidates include seniors Cole Kotopka, Nick Followell, Sean Pierce and Ryan Roberts, plus juniors Joe Antonopolous, Jacob Barley and Jacob Geiger.

“We have to cut down on walks,” O’Reel said. “We have put too many runners on with free bases over the years. We need to focus on each pitch and attack the strike zone consistently.

These are issues we can control and need to control.”

East went 11-10 and finished a school-best third in the SPC a year ago.

“It is a highly competitive conference and doesn’t always get the credit it should,” O’Reel said. “The conference schedule definitely sets up for exciting finishes and truly shows the depth of teams.”

Tougher schedule might benefit Cougars PLAINFIELD SOUTH

By TIM TIERNEY Shaw Media Correspondent PLAINFIELD – The temperature was in the 70s on March 16, the sun was shining and the Plainfield South softball team was outside, practicing on its field for the first time this year.

All was right with the Cougars.

“I just love being out here,’’ senior pitcher Jordan Harbacek said. “The best place to be this time of year.’’

South’s softball field, which has a new scoreboard behind the right-field fence, should be a good place all season for the Cougars. Although South graduated seven players from last year’s 19-13 team, the Cougars have an experienced battery, a returning starter in center field to solidify the outfield and some promising newcomers.

“We have a lot of talent, we have a great group of girls,’’ Harbacek said.

“I feel we can go a long way if we just focus and work together, keep the fun-loving team we have right now.’’

Harbacek, catcher Julia Engelhardt, center fielder Angie Giancarlo and Abbey Plutz, who is moving from first to third base, bring experience to the roster.

Harbacek, a four-year starter, is a Northern Kentucky recruit and is prepared for her final year with the Cougars.

“Working every offseason as hard as I could to prepare for the next season really matured me, working on my weaknesses,’’ Harbacek said.

South had its ups and downs last season, including a seven-game skid before a nine-game winning streak going into the Class 4A Plainfield Central Regional championship game against the host Wildcats.

Trailing 7-3, Central rallied for seven runs in the sixth inning to earn a 10-7 win and leave a bad feeling among the Cougars.

“The seniors’ goal this year, we don’t want to go out on a bad note,’’ Gi-

ancarlo said.

“I beefed up the schedule this year,’’ second-year South coach Leah Carter said. “The main reason is we need to play the tougher schools, so when we get into the regional/sectional playoff, we’re ready for them. We’re going to drop some games here and there.

Carter added Oak Park, the Niles West Tournament and a doubleheader with Wheaton-Warrenville South to the schedule.

“Win or lose, learn something from the game and take it to the next game,’’ Carter said of the regular season.

Carter described shortstop Kayla Curbis, a promising sophomore, as a player “to keep your eyes on.’’

Other keys for South will be pitcher Allison Hiestand, second baseman Kristen Slivka, first baseman Kim White and outfielder Darcy Snyder.

South opens its Southwest Prairie Conference season April 7 at home against Plainfield North. Minooka is the defending conference champion.

Wrigley rooftop owners, Cubs continue to battle

CHICAGO – A lawyer for rooftop clubs overlooking Wrigley Field told a federal court Monday that if the Cubs are permitted to erect a giant video board blocking views of games from across the street it would kill their lucrative business.

Attorneys for the Cubs and two of the rooftops delivered seven hours of arguments in Chicago over whether Judge Virginia Kendall should order a halt to construction of the right-field sign until a wide-ranging lawsuit is resolved.

The rooftop businesses line streets outside Wrigley and offer views of Cubs games without going into the stadium. The Cubs have a revenue-sharing agreement with the private rooftop owners, but team owners said nothing in that 2004 deal prevents them putting up the video board and other signs that would obstruct the rooftop views.

The judge, who earlier this year rejected the rooftops clubs’ emergency request to temporarily halt the installation, will be under pressure to issue this more decisive ruling before April 5 – the date of the Cubs’ first home game home game of the season. She’s expected to rule within several days.

Today, though, Olivieri’s key word is “migrate.” This deal is the same as yesterday’s except that the spade ace has migrated into the dummy. How does that affect South’s line of play in three no-trump after West leads the heart queen?

South should rebid one spade, despite the weakness of the suit. North’s three-diamond rebid is game-invitational, guaranteeing at least a six-card suit. South, with two heart stoppers and some diamond fit, takes a shot at three no-trump.

South starts with seven top tricks: one spade, two hearts, two diamonds and two clubs. He can get two extra winners from either minor. Maybe diamonds will divide 3-2 or clubs will split 3-3. Yesterday, declarer had to choose immediately, so went with diamonds because a 3-2 break is much more likely than 3-3 (67.8 percent versus 35.53 percent). Now, though, South can try both suits.

After winning the first trick, declarer should cash dummy’s two top diamonds.

If the suit is splitting 3-2, South concedes a diamond trick. With the spade ace in the dummy, declarer can reach those three established winners and bring home an overtrick.

Here, though, when diamonds divide 4-1, South must hope for 3-3 clubs.

This line produces a 79.2 percent probability of success.

A base of plain, lowfat yogurt enhanced with your own healthy toppings makes for a good breakfast or snack.

With the right additions, yogurt can supply a mix of fat, protein and fiber that is both filling and nutritious.

Here is a basic combination you can customize to your taste: Fruit and yogurt: A cup of plain, low-fat yogurt, a medium handful of fresh fruit, and a sprinkling of nuts, granola, bran or oatmeal is all you need. Sweeten to taste with honey, maple syrup or regular sugar.

Most likely, by adding just enough sweet stuff to make it taste good, you’ll have less sugar in your yogurt than if you start with a pre-sweetened yogurt.

You can also incorporate yogurt into other meals and snacks throughout the day. For example: • Dilute sour cream or mayonnaise with yogurt to cut back on fat calories without losing the flavor. (This is the advice our nutritionists give me. To be honest, I haven’t tried it yet.)

• Make packaged dips with yogurt instead of sour cream.

• Mix yogurt with lemon and honey to make a sweet sauce to put on fruit.

As always, check the Nutrition Facts label on the yogurt container. It will help you spot how much fat and sugar it contains.

Dear Doctor K: Is yogurt a healthy choice for breakfast or as a snack?

Dear Reader: You’ve heard me talk frequently about “good” and “bad” fats, and “good” and “bad” carbs. So it won’t be surprising when I say there are “good” yogurts and “bad” yogurts.

Here’s what I mean.

Yogurt • plain, low-fat yogurt • is a healthy food.

But many yogurt products contain ingredients you could do without, like added sweeteners.

So let’s talk about what to look for in a healthy yogurt.

First, fat. Yogurt has the same percentage of fat as the milk (or soy) used to make it: 3.25 percent (whole milk), 0.5 percent to 2 percent (lowfat), and less than 0.5 percent (nonfat). I prefer low-fat yogurt, which strikes a good balance between saturated fat and taste. I have it at least three to four times per week.

Next up, protein.

Yogurt is a good source of lean protein. But the amount of protein per serving in yogurt products varies quite a bit.

Plain Greek-style yogurt is relatively high in protein because much of its excess water has been removed, thus concentrating the yogurt. At the other extreme, non-fat or “light” yogurts may have as little as 4 grams of protein per serving.

Try to avoid sweetened yogurts, which can contain three or more teaspoons of added sugar. Instead, start “clean” with plain, lowfat yogurt. Then add a bit of honey, maple syrup or sugar to taste.

Next, a surprise: I would also stay away from light or “lite” yogurts. To compensate for the fat removed from these yogurts, manufacturers add thickeners such as gelatin, gum or starch. Sweeteners and flavoring agents are also added. The result is a

Dear Abby: My wife has stage 4 breast cancer. She is only 51, and our most optimistic prognosis is three to four more years. Our children, 15 and 16, understand her disease, but don’t really have a sense of how much longer we all have together.

Recently, we went out to dinner, and the kids started talking about my retirement plans and their college plans.

Later that night, my wife told me how sad it was hearing the kids talk about things she knows she will never see.

I have been debating whether I should have a talk with the kids and perhaps suggest they avoid subjects that make their mother sad.

What do you think? – Not Talking About the Future Dear Not Talking: Before talking to your children, I think you should talk to your wife. Although your instinct is to protect her, I don’t think you can. Sadness in her situation is normal.

I’m sure if you were to ask her if she’d prefer the kids censor their remarks in front of her, she would tell you she wants to hear everything she can about what they are thinking.

When people have a terminal illness, they have a right to be sad when contemplating the things they will be missing – in your wife’s case it will be seeing her children get married, her grandchildren and more. Let your children express themselves fully with their mother, and if she’s having a bad/sad day, listen and let her unburden herself. A joy shared is twice a joy, and a burden shared is half a burden.

Dear Abby: As a gift, my boyfriend, “Seth,” gave me a Chihuahua puppy. I like dogs, but have never expressed a desire to have one. In fact, I have repeatedly mentioned my dislike for small dogs and that I
