Woodruff Inn – Joliet By the early 1920s, road improvements and highly publicized expeditions along the Lincoln Highway generated enough interest that Americans felt more confident about taking up the adventure of cross-country motor travel.

Travelers who could afford to pay for comfort would welcome the excellent accommodations found in many local hotels. Those motorists on a budget or eager for adventure found “motor hoboing” or camping along the route a more appealing alternative.

Like many vintage hotels in small cities, they were not initially designed for the automobile traveler. Instead, the hotel’s advertising emphasized the building’s modern conveniences such as rooms with baths, running hot and cold water, electric lights and steam heat.

Some hotels offered full-range amenities such as dining rooms and coffee shops as these were important considerations for a road traveler. As was the case in many locations, no town or city could prosper without a modern hotel to accommodate visitors, especially automobile travelers.

In Joliet, one such motor-friendly hotel was the Woodruff Inn. Located on the southwest corner of Scott and Jefferson Streets, the Woodruff Inn opened for business on Nov. 1, 1915. Designed in an old English architectural style, the 102room hotel offered guests some of the finest amenities found in the area.

The interior of the hotel included a large inviting lobby with leather chairs and sofas, oak tables, rocking chairs and a fireplace. Spending time in the lobby with friends or sitting by oneself on the comfortable furniture and reading a book, the lobby was certainly a pleasant place to unwind while at the Woodruff Inn. Rooms in the hotel were furnished with oak furniture and velvet carpeting and included many modern conveniences of the time. Chandeliers and paneled walls also were common throughout the hotel. Guests even had access to a tailor shop, a barber, private telephones and a car mechanic.

OLD POSTCARD IMAGES SOUGHT FOR PUBLICATION David Belden is a history teacher at Minooka Community High School and currently is publishing local postcard books with Arcadia Publishing in his Local History classes. He and his students are looking for old Joliet photos and postcards, and images from Joliet’s parks, for a new publication.

An inner courtyard was designed to provide guests with an outside tranquil setting. The architecture of the hotel and the beautiful outside landscaping provided a wonderful backdrop for guests who wanted to sit in the rocking chairs and enjoy the warm, outside air.

HAVING FUN WITH HISTORY Families go back in time at Joliet’s Pioneer Festival

Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – Sarah Anne Troiani, 9, of New Lenox traveled back to the year 1832, packed her wagon with 1,200 pounds of essentials and left Buffalo, New York, with a final destination of Joliet.

“My favorite thing to do was pack the wagon because I got to see what people had back then and had to decide what to pack. We packed tools, food and water,” Sarah Anne said.

More than 500 people came Saturday to Pilcher Park in Joliet for the annual Pioneer Festival and Pancake Breakfast, which changed this year to a one-day event from a weekend event because of high costs and lower turnout on Sundays.

Pilcher Park Nature Center manager Katie Zaban said the hours were

extended to accommodate the event being only one day, so normal attendance was expected.

Upon arrival, each family was presented with a passport and map that led them on a journey from Buffalo to Joliet, with eight other stops along the way. The participants could go to each station on the park property to work on a chore, make a craft, prepare food and learn trades and history.

“This gets kids and adults to understand what life was like 150 years ago, and allowed them to go back to their roots. Everyone struggled to travel west, and this gave people now a glimpse of that in a fun, hands-on way,” Zaban said.

Spring steps off with festive celebration in downtown Joliet JOLIET – On the first day of spring, the spirit of the season’s biggest holiday was alive in the streets of downtown Joliet at the annual Easter parade.

The event, in its 25th year, took place Sunday along Chicago Street and included more than 75 participants, including the Bunny himself.

In addition to being an Easter celebration, the parade is a fundraiser for the Wish Upon a Star Foundation. The foundation works to fulfill the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses.

From there they learned about cameras from the 1850s, which, according to historian and camera owner Ron Jones, could only be used if the temperature was above 50 degrees. Then

yarn had to be spun for clothes, laundry had to be washed, butter needed churning for bread, and finally, there was time for games.

“I enjoyed making the toys. I made a doll and a button toy on a string. It was an activity, so it was fun,” said Tiffany Lehmann, 16, of Joliet.

After the fun, it was time to get back on the trail and learn how to shoot a bow and arrow and how to trade the furs after a successful hunt. Then it

“I liked to write on the little chalkboard and watch the boys get into trouble. Two came in late for class and the third wouldn’t wear his name tag,” Elaina Troiani, 6, of New Lenox said giggling.

Once in Joliet, the travelers learned how pioneers and Native Americans made maple syrup from the taps in the trees to the final product in the Sugar

Shack.

Inside the nature center was a pancake breakfast that lasted the length of the event – 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. – and offered fresh maple syrup made on the premises.

“People need to step out and come here and see what it took to move across states and how people lived back then,” Silvia Ramirez of Rockdale said.

“This is a fun, hands-on reality that kids won’t get from electronics.”

Girl Scout cookies benefit our troops VIEWS Kris Stadalsky I eagerly await the time of year when the Girl Scouts are selling their famous cookies. It used to be that the neighbor girls would come right to my door and the only thing I’d exert in getting them was a workout of my fingers as I checked off the boxes next to my favorite kinds.

Now that the neighbor kids are mostly grown, I have to scout them out (no pun intended), hocking their delicious wares outside businesses.

Imagine my surprise and excitement when I saw the group of Brownies and Daisies of Shorewood Troop 71508 in front of the stores at Shorewood Commons.

As I was standing in line, one gentleman drove right up and placed his order curbside.

Hmmm, a Girl Scout cookie drive-thru – good idea.

What caught my eye next, besides the boxes and boxes of Thin Mints and Tagalongs, were the posters one of the girls was holding. “Send cookies to our

I can’t go out for a leisurely Saturday afternoon of errands and just shop. If I see a possible story, I have to stop and ask questions. And they were delighted to accommodate me.

Chicago and Northwest Indiana collected more than 150,000 boxes of cookies, which they send to organizations that get them to the men and women serving in the armed forces.

The three Scouts – Daisies Addisyn Schelling and Luci Leverence, and Brownie Emma Roberts – said they were happy and excited to include Gift of Caring as part of their fundraising effort for Girl Scouts.

As of a week ago, the girls had collected enough donations to send 291 boxes of cookies to our troops.

Their original goal for this year was 1,000 boxes – a bit ambitious, said Sarah Roberts, co-leader of the troop.

“But we are still very proud of our girls this year,” she followed up to me in an email.

Girls Scouts also has gone digital and after 100 years of person-to-person sales, the cookies now can be bought online. You can even donate cookies to Gift of Caring online and designate the troop you want to get credit for the sale.

Many times, Lawrence represented these people at steep discounts or even pro bono. Chuck said his father’s concern for these clients continued even after Lawrence was receiving hospice care.

QUICK NEWS Bridge reconstruction to start on I-55 and Route 171 interchange

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Friday that lane reductions and ramp closures are necessary for a bridge reconstruction project along Route 171 and the Interstate 55 interchange, in Summit, Lyons and McCook.

The work will start, weather permitting, this week The project will reconstruct the bridges along northbound Route 171 from 47th Street to 55th Street as well as the interchange with Interstate 55.

Traffic on Route 171 will be reduced to one lane in each direction, beginning Thursday. Traffic will shift onto the newly constructed southbound lanes on Route 171. There will be occasional, overnight closures on Interstate 55 and permanent shoulder closures on I-55 at Route 171.

Beginning March 28, all ramps on northbound Route 171 will be closed to traffic in order to reconstruct the interchange. De-

tours will be posted. All lanes and ramps will reopen when the project is completed in the fall.

Motorists can expect delays and should seek alternate routes.

Joliet grade school students to perform at Rialto

JOLIET – More than 150 Joliet Public Schools District 86 students will perform in the 13th annual Children for Peace musical celebration scheduled for Wednesday at the Rialto Square Theatre.

JOLIET – With pride, Chuck Morrissey of Chicago turned the scrapbook’s pages and noted his father’s many accomplishments.

Over the years, Lawrence Morrissey, former chief of the organized crime and racketeering section in the Northern District of Illinois, successfully prosecuted many well-known members of the crime syndicate.

Chuck attributes his father’s success to hard work and determination. Lawrence learned both from his mother, Margaret, after the sudden death of her husband, Charles, on Dec. 22, 1944.

Charles was only 32 years old.

Lawrence was 7. His sister, Rosemary Ahmann, was 10.

“He came home from work, said he wasn’t feeling good, went into the bathroom, fell over and died,” Lawrence said in a 2006 “An Extraordinary Life” story on his mother. “My mother came running out to us in the living room. The tree was all decorated and my sister and I were sitting around talking about how we wanted to get bikes for Christmas. She told us to get some help. I remember later sitting on the couch with Father O’Keefe when they brought my father

out in a black bag.”

Margaret went to work as head of procurement at Stateville Correctional Center in Joliet. Lawrence delivered morning newspaper routes – for the former Spectator and for The Herald-News. He mowed lawns and shoveled snow, Chuck said.

Rosemary worked, too. On Friday nights, they watched movies with the prisoners at Stateville.

“He worked to help pay his tuition at St. Ray’s Catholic High and University of Illinois,” Chuck said.

“And then he came back to Joliet and started working for National Stone Company and took classes at DePaul and John Marshall.”

In 1962, Margaret received a promotion, which allowed Lawrence to attend school full-time. After graduating from John Marshall Law School in 1964, the former U.S. Marine worked as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Northern District of Illinois, where he was appointed chief of the organized crime and racketeering section in 1967.

Two years later, Lawrence helped disband the Chicago crime syndicate, for which he received a meritorious service award from former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark.

In 1974, Lawrence opened a private practice in Chicago while working

after his father’s death – on Jan. 8 at age 78 from aggressive nasopharyngeal cancer. Amazingly, Lawrence practiced law until his final month.

“After working with some of these folks and getting good results, I realized the intrinsic value in representing these folks who were very appreciative,” Chuck said in an email. “I think my father enjoyed the feeling of helping someone more than the dollars.”

After Lawrence’s death, both the Chicago City Council and Illinois Senate honored him with resolutions.

Chuck recalled the last time he met his father after work for a drink.

He had asked Lawrence, “Do you want me to give the eulogy?” and he said Lawrence had answered, “No. I don’t want you crying in front of my friends.”

And then Chuck said his father added, “You have nothing to cry about. We had 47 years together.

That’s 40 more than I got with my father. Think of all the things we’ve done. Think of the nights we met after work to have cocktails. I never got to do that with my dad.”

But that was typical Lawrence, Chuck said, always smiling, always looking at the positive.

Illinois Legislature exempts self from open records review

SPRINGFIELD – When Illinois lawmakers revamped the Freedom of Information Act in 2009 and created an outside appeals process for public records requests denied by state government, they made an important exception – themselves.

Records requests denied by the General Assembly are not subject to review by the attorney general’s public access counselor, the counselor’s office said in a letter this week to The Associated Press.

That exception for the Legislature means that even as Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner routinely discloses his appointment calendars in response to AP requests, the leaders of the Legislature could deny a similar AP request for their calendars and emails – with no right of appeal. Democratic Speaker Michael Madigan – who has been in that post for more than 30 years – doesn’t even keep a calendar or use email, his spokesman Steve Brown said.

“It does not make for good government,” David Melton, senior adviser to the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform, said of the exception for the General Assembly.

Even some advocates of open government had overlooked the provision exempting the General Assembly from FOIA appeals. The issue has come up as Illinois is mired in a fracas between Rauner and legislative Democrats that has left the state without a budget for nine months. Many lawmakers admit that nothing much is getting done in Springfield.

Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie, the No. 2 Democrat in the House, said allowing review of open records denials by the attorney general would violate constitutional separation of power provisions between executive and legis-

lative branches. Christine Radogno, the Senate’s Republican leader, would not address the issue during an unrelated news conference Thursday, but added, “This is an area that we’re trying to work through.”

Eileen Boyce, spokeswoman for Democratic Attorney General Lisa Madigan, who spearheaded the 2009 FOIA revision that created the counselor, did not answer a question about whether the Legislature should submit to the review system, but said that the attorney general “has strongly advocated for greater transparency by all branches of government.”

The AP participated in a 50-state project for Sunshine Week, the national celebration of government transparency, by requesting emails and appointment calendars for the week of Feb. 1 to 7 from each legislative leader.

The Senate responded that legislative immunity granted by the state constitution shields it from answering FOIA requests. It also argued, along with the House, that it is exempt from releasing emails and calendars, saying that individual legislators are not “public bodies” under FOIA and that the law makes exceptions for “preliminary drafts” and the personal privacy of constituents.

Asked whether Speaker Madigan believes legislative leaders should release information as Rauner has, Madigan’s spokesman Steve Brown said he’d check and call back “if I have anything to say.” He did not call back.

Democratic Sen. Kwame Raoul of Chicago, the Senate sponsor of the 2009 FOIA alterations, said too much immediate release of information could stymie the always-complex, often-delicate process of lawmaking “if every exchange and every conversation is subject to scrutiny.”

“We have enough trouble getting stuff done to begin with,” Raoul said.

DAVID G. GREGORY

Geraldine Gallagher (nee Green), age 88. At rest Saturday, March 19, 2016, at St. Patrick’s Residence Nursing and Rehabilitation, Naperville, with her loving family at her side following a brief but courageous battle with cancer.

Born June 5, 1927, in Litchfield, she moved to Joliet at an early age, and was a 1945 graduate of Joliet Township High School.

She married the love of her life, Gerald J. Gallagher, and they shared 69 wonderful years together.

After raising her boys, she went to work as a bookkeeper for Americana Healthcare Center, and later for E.B. Brown where she spent many years. She also enjoyed working at DuPage Podiatry Center until her retirement.

Geraldine and Gerald were life long Cub fans and enjoyed watching their games on TV. She also enjoyed following the stock market and being involved in the lives of her grandchildren.

Geraldine will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and will be greatly missed by her family.

Surviving are her three sons, Thomas (Jane), Dr. Gary (Dr. Karen) and Dr. Kevin (Vicki) Gallagher; five grandchildren, Melissa Gallagher, Nicholette (Brian) Varley, Erica (Jason) Burke, Ryland and Delaney Gallagher; great-grandchildren, Fallon, David, Nicholas, Oliver, Delilah, Mason and Gabriella.

Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gerald, on Oct. 26, 2015; and her mother, Eulah G. Peters Bessell; her father and stepfathers.

Funeral services for Geraldine Gallagher will be held Wednesday, March 23, 2016, at 10:15 a.m. from the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington roads, Joliet to the Cathedral of St. Raymond for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

David G. “Whitey” Gregory, died at home after a brief illness. Known as “Whitey” to family and friends, he was a kind, loving husband to his wife, Kimberly (Kabat), and a strong, caring father to daughter, Molly, and son, David Parker Gregory. A 1977 Joliet West graduate, Whitey played semi-pro hockey, loved to golf and was a Local 444 Ironworker until starting his own construction and commercial development business. Always devoted to his family, friends and community, he will be sorely missed.

Preceded by his mother, Constance (Karstens) Gregory; brother, Douglas E. Gregory; and mother-in-law, Josephine Kabat.

Born Nov. 29, 1960, in Morris, he is the son of James and Sue (Fannin) Murphy.

He was raised and educated in Morris and graduated from Morris High School with the class of 1979.

Kevin worked for the City of Morris for over 34 years starting as a meter reader and working his way up to the Morris Sewer and Water Department Superintendent.

A man of faith, Kevin was actively involved in his church and dedicated countless hours helping others. Kevin was also devoted to his loving daughter, Jacqueline, and his family. He also enjoyed coaching Little League baseball and was an avid Beatles fan. He also loved doing landscaping and gardening.

Kevin is survived by his daughter, Jacqueline; Elizabeth Murphy, mother of Jacqueline and treasured friend; his parents, Jim and Sue (Fannin) Murphy; twin brother, Keith Murphy and his wife Nina; sister, Sherry (Murphy) Keefe of Lafayette, IN; brother, Michael Murphy and his wife, Michelle; and his loving grandmother, Armanette Fannin. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.

He is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Kermit Fannin; paternal grandparents, Edgar and Maude Murphy; and uncles Bill Fannin and Frank Donnelly.

Marcia was born in Chicago and raised in Tomahawk, WI. She married in 1962 and moved to Manhattan in 1972. After raising her boys, Marcia worked as a secretary for several years for a number of construction companies. She was a member of St. Joseph Church and of the CCW. She also served as president on the Manhattan Elwood Library board and was on the board when the new library was built. One of Marcia’s favorite hobbies was quilting, some of her favorite work can be found displayed in her home.

Irinean T. Swartz (nee Steen), passed away at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center, Saturday, March 19, 2016. Age 76 years.

Survived by five children, Reveneal I. (John) O’Brien, Howard W. (Dawn) Swartz III, Steven C. (Lisa) Swartz, John T. Swartz and Kathleen M. (David) Martyka; seven grandchildren, Brian, Darrell, Sean, Maegan, Samuel, Maxwell and Alisabeth; two great-grandchild; her brother, Donald J. Steen; her sister, Norita Kemp; special niece and nephew, James Hoffman and Rita Jean (Tom) Barrett. Fond Aunt TT to several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Howard W. Swartz Jr. (2011); her parents, George and Irene Rita Steen; a sister, Reveneal Hoffman; and four brothers, Sherman, Kenneth, Roger and David Steen.

Irinean was born Aug. 17, 1939, in Kankakee.

She graduated from Kankakee High School Class of 1957. Irinean retired from First Student Bus Company. Member of the Cathedral of St. Raymond. She enjoyed golf, biking, outdoors and most of all spending time with her children and grandchildren. Member of Beta Sigma Phi social service sorority.

Funeral services will be held from the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home, 2320 Black Rd., Wednesday, March 23, 2016, at 9 a.m. to the Cathedral of St. Raymond at 9:30 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Richard F. O’Malley, age 82, died March 18, 2016, in Evanston, surrounded by his family.

Born Sept. 18, 1933, in Aurora, one of six sons of his parents, John who immigrated from Ireland and worked for the Burlington Northern and Margaret (nee Sheehan), a college graduate and school teacher. Graduated from Marmion Military Academy and Regis University. Served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and honorably discharged as a Sergeant.

Employed 33 years in national sales for U.S. Gypsum and UC Industries. Richard was the youngest district manager in the history of U.S. Gypsum and contributed to the building of many of Chicago’s skyscrapers, including Willis (nee Sears) Tower.

Richard was a devoted member of St. Jude’s of Joliet Catholic Parish. He served on St. Jude’s School Board and was a lector and eucharistic minister. He lent his construction talents to expanding the school and building new walls for the classrooms. He was an active parent for St. Francis Academy and Joliet Catholic High School, who with his wife, Mary, ran a showroom at the Jubilation Fundraiser for a number of years. He was an avid golfer, who was a member of the Wedgewood Golf Club Men’s Senior league.

He also enjoyed travel, photography and was a voracious reader. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Elks Club.

Richard was a devoted grandfather who attended many sporting events, dance recitals, First Communions and graduations of his seven grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary T. (nee O’Connell) O’Malley; infant son, Joseph O’Connell O’Malley; his parents, John T. and Margaret (Sheehan) O’Malley; brothers, John and Francis O’Malley.

Survived by three children, Richard F. (Anne Gallagher) O’Malley Jr. of Evanston, Colleen (Peter) Driscoll of Kenilworth and Mary Kathleen O’Malley of Chicago; seven grandchildren, R. Conor, Elizabeth, Brian G., and Katherine G. O’Malley of Evanston, Eileen O., Anne and Clare Driscoll of Kenilworth; and brothers, Robert, James and Thomas O’Malley.

Visitation for Richard F. O’Malley will be held Monday, March 21, 2016, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington roads, Joliet. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 22, 2016, at St. Jude Catholic Church, 2212 W. HAVANA – Stepping into history, President Barack Obama opened an extraordinary visit to Cuba on Sunday, eager to push decades of acrimony deeper into the past and forge irreversible ties with America’s former adversary.

“This is a historic visit and a historic opportunity,” Obama said as he greeted staff of the new U.S. Embassy in Havana.

Air Force One touched down on a rainy, overcast day in the Cuban capital. The president was joined by wife Michelle Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha.

Obama was greeted by top Cuban officials – but not President Raul Castro. The Cuban leader frequently greets major world figures upon their arrival at Jose Marti International Airport, but was absent on the tarmac. Instead, he planned to greet Obama on Monday at the Palace of the Revolution.

Obama’s whirlwind trip is a crowning moment in his and Castro’s ambitious effort to restore normal relations between their countries. While deep differences persist, the economic and political relationship has changed rapidly in the 15 months since the leaders vowed a new beginning.

After greeting embassy staff, Obama and his family toured Old Havana by foot, despite a heavy downpour. They walked gingerly on the slippery wet stones in the square in front of the Havana Cathedral. A few hundred people gathered in the square erupted in applause and shouted Obama’s name as the first family stepped forward.

The Obamas then dined at a privately-owned restaurant in a bustling, working class neighborhood. Jubilant crowds surged toward the president’s heavily fortified motorcade as it inched through the San Cristobal restaurant.

For more than 50 years, Cuba was an unimaginable destination for a U.S. president, as well as most American citizens. Lincoln-Way West’s run brought back great memories Curt Herron Growing up in basketball-crazy Lockport, I quickly developed a great passion for the sport. The first time that I saw a game coached by Bob Basarich in 1978, I was hooked.

But as time passed, my interest has waned, largely due to how basketball has changed since the memorable 1980s and 1990s. But something dramatic happened to me this year, and it was inspired by a team that got off to a 10-8 start.

I’ve been reporting on sports in this area for nearly 30 years and thought I had seen it all. But I’d never seen anything quite like the exciting run that Lincoln-Way West’s boys basketball team put together that led them to the Class 3A title game, where they lost to Althoff Catholic on Saturday in Peoria.

I got to report on each playoff game but the first.

While the story ended on a down note for the Warriors, that in no way takes away from what was one of the most-unlikely playoff runs in IHSA history. A program that entered the

title game one year and win it the next.

“To play the way that we did starting with the Providence game in our regional championship. The Peotone game was on the same level and then we stepped it up a little for Hillcrest.

The Morgan Park game was by far the best game that we played all year, even better than the Peoria Manual game.

season with a 47-126 record knocked off one quality team after another.

This was a real throwback team, one that reminded me of a time in basketball when good defense, execution and shooting were critical. And the fact that they only used six or seven players a game during the playoff run only emphasizes that point.

Coach Brian Flaherty is developing into an excellent coach, following in the footsteps of his father, Mike, who’s one of the best in the business. And assistant Dick Mandella has been one of my favorite coaches for a long time. He’s both an excellent coach and individual.

One likely factor in Corey Darling’s performance Crawford this year is his spot-duty workload. Until Friday night Darling had yet to start back-to-back games.

Last year he played three consecutive games for Crawford in October and Scott Darling four straight games in December – both impressive stints.

“I think it is important,” captain Jonathan Toews said. “It’s not necessarily a blessing [that Crawford is injured], but I think it is … an opportunity for Scotty to get some games and get that confidence.

“It’s not easy to play as few games as he’s played this year. I think now it’s good for him to get in that routine heading down the stretch – maybe if he does get a chance to pop in here or there for a period. He’s going to be much more prepared for it.”

Corey Crawford missed his second consecutive game with an upper-body injury, which gave Scott Darling a third consecutive start in goal on Sunday – and his best chance to get back in his 2014-15 groove in what coach Joel Quenneville called a “pretty critical” time for the Blackhawks.

Coming off a 4-0 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Friday night – his second career shutout – Darling entered the Wild game with a 7-6-2 record in 15 starts, with a 2.55 goals-against average and .914 save percentage. That’s a bit of a decline from last season, when Darling was 9-4-0 in 13 starts with a 2.05 goals-against average and .933 save percentage. Quenneville acknowledged the less-than-stellar play – along with Crawford’s Vezina-caliber season – cost Darling a couple of more starts this season.

Crawford will be the Hawks’ goalie in the Stanley Cup playoffs, but Darling made a key contribution last year when he won three games of the opening-round series against the Predators, including a spectacular 42-save relief performance in Game 1.

Gavin was the lone starter, making him the first player ever from the Chicago-area to start in both a state football and basketball championship in the same season. Pohrte and Green join a Stevenson player as the only other Chicago-area athletes to be members of state finalists in football and basketball in the same season.

This was also the first basketball title matchup between teams that lost football title games. Althoff had nine starters from its Class 4A football runner-up on its basketball title team.

“It’s incredible to say that I played in two state championship games in one season and to be among the first to do that in Lincoln-Way history,” Gavin said. “This was a great run. I love this team and everything about it, even practice. I’m going to miss it all.”

“They were definitely the best team that we played in this Cinderella story,” Bumstead said. “We’ve been hot all postseason and were just stroking the ball until today. This was the first day that we didn’t shoot over 50 percent. All good stories have to come to an end some time. It happens, it’s part of basketball and life.

“Playing in the finals was incredible. We were probably predicted to lose in our regional but we were playing for the state championship.

Hopefully we’ll be talked about in future years because we made this incredible run and beat all of these great teams.”

LOCKPORT SOFTBALL PREVIEW

LOCKPORT – Last season, the Lockport softball team saw something happen for the first time since the IHSA went to a four-class playoff system in 2008. The Porters lost in the first round of the tournament.

That doesn’t sit well with the returning Porters, who, when you review their roster, look very young.

They have five seniors, six juniors and five sophomores, but all very experienced.

The majority of the players also are experienced at more than one position.

“Last year we were so young,” veteran coach Marissa Chovanec said. “We had four starters who were freshmen. With everyone gaining the experience from last year and playing well over the summer with their travel teams, we are a veteran club this year with still a lot of youth.

“It didn’t sit well with anyone about what happened last season.

This team is hungry this year.”

The depth of the Porters starts in the circle with two experienced senior pitchers in Justine Cielenski and Lauren Stoch.

Lockport has three additional pitchers in junior Meghan Kelly and sophomores Elly Hagen and Bailey Delrose.

Delrose didn’t play her freshman season, but is a familiar name as she has been a key component of the Porters’ bowling team’s success over the past two seasons.

“We really believe that we can go far in the playoffs this year,” Stoch said. “Our defense really looks good and as a pitcher that gives you so much confidence when you step on the field. I’m excited for my senior year, to leave it all out there this year. Losing early in the playoffs last year is what drives us.”

Chovanec knows any successful team has good up-the-middle defense.

The Porters have experience behind the plate in Gracie Voulgaris, a sophomore and her sister Zara, a senior at first base.

Second base is occupied by senior Halle Hollatz. Sophomores Courtney Schoolcraft and Tara McElligott play shortstop and third base, respectively, and were big contributors their freshmen seasons.

“Last year, I was very nervous at the beginning of the season,” Schoolcraft said. “I’m so much more comfortable this year and have the experience I didn’t have last year. Defense

“We work on and look at the critical counts offensively every at-bat,” Chovanec said. “You have to know the situation. Everyone needs to be

productive. We also flip that around and work on those same situations defensively. Everyone needs to be on the same page.”

Senior captain Bailee Moll, who plays right field, likes the direction the Porters are going.

“We have really come together well, from when conditioning started in the winter to the start of practices,” she said. “It seems like we all have been together so long. I can’t believe it’s my senior season already, it goes by so quick. I take pride in playing the outfield. We play a tough schedule and the ball is going to be hit to you, so you better be ready and know the situation. We really want it all this season.”

“Our conference, the SouthWest Suburban, gets you really prepared for the state run,” Chovanec said.

“Just look at the success our conference has had over the years. It makes everyone a better team. We have to learn and work on becoming a team.

We talk with each player about goals, what they need to work on. As long as we play as a team, those goals will fall into place.”

NEW YORK – Notre Dame and Stephen F. Austin went shot-for-shot in an NCAA Tournament game that was about as good as it gets. The power school against the unflinching underdog. The lead never was more than seven for either team.

That it came down to the last shot was no surprise. The hero, though, might have been the most unlikely player on the floor to make a game-winner.

Rex Pflueger tapped in a rebound with 1.5 seconds left and Notre Dame survived 14th-seeded Stephen F. Austin, 76-75, on Sunday to reach the NCAA round of 16 for the second consecutive season.

Down one with 17.5 seconds left, sixth-seed Notre Dame grabbed an SFA rebound and put the ball in the hands of Demetrius Jackson. The point guard drove to the basket and missed. Zach Auguste followed for the Irish (23-11) but could not convert.

The ball slipped off the rim and with one hand Pflueger flipped it in.

Not only had Pflueger not scored in the game to that point, he hadn’t had a field goal since March 5.

“I just crashed the board,” Pflueger said. “I thought Zach was going to make that last layup, but coach always emphasizes going to the board hard, especially in situations like that, and it just turned out for the best for us.”

The Irish advance to play either Wisconsin on Friday in the East Regional at Philadelphia.

The Irish and Lumberjacks put on a show to match Beyonce at Barclays Center, with Brey’s longtime friend, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, sitting not far behind the Notre Dame bench.

“I’ve been watching them all year, and they’re very tough-minded so they were going to battle right to the very end,” said Christie, whose daughter Sarah is a team manager.

“But was I nervous? Yeah, absolutely.”

Villanova 87, Iowa 68: At New York, Iowa started the season on quite a roll and ended it with quite a thud.

“It’s a very hard task just to make this tournament, let alone win a game here,” said point guard Mike Gesell, one of four senior starters. “So, I’m very proud of my guys, the way we handled ourselves all season. The season’s a grind. There’s a lot of ups and downs during the season, and we kept plugging along, kept working hard every day, and getting better every single day.”

The Blue Raiders (25-10), who shredded so many brackets with their upset of second-seeded Michigan State, made things tough on Syracuse for a while. They led early in the second half and still trailed just 40-39 with 16:02 to go, but proceeded to make one of their next 16 field-goal attempts.

Oklahoma 85, VCU 81: At Oklahoma City, Buddy Hield scored 19 of his 36 points in the final eight minutes to help No. 2 seed Oklahoma hold off No. 10 seed VCU. Hield, who didn’t score for more than 10 minutes to start the game, made 9 of 12 shots in the second half after going 2 for 8 in the first. The senior guard posted at least 30 points for the 11th time this season.

The talented sharpshooter who failed to hit from beyond the arc in a first-round win over Pittsburgh connected from well beyond the 3-point line to tie it at 63 with 11.7 seconds remaining.

Edmond Sumner brought the ball up court for second-seeded Xavier (286), and then drove to the basket, running over the Badgers’ Zak Showalter and getting called for an offensive foul with 4.3 seconds to go.

No. 7 seed Wisconsin (22-12) called timeout after crossing half court and coach Greg Gard drew up a play for his best outside shooter. Koenig got the inbound pass in front of his own bench and buried the fallaway shot, sending the jubilant Badgers streaming onto the court and into another Sweet 16.

“I just tried to channel my inner Steph Curry,” Koenig said, referring to the reigning NBA MVP. The Badgers will face sixth-seeded Notre Dame on Friday in Philadelphia.

Texas A&M 92, Northern Iowa 88 (2OT): At Oklahoma City, Alex Caruso

scored 25 points as Texas A&M overcame a 10-point deficit with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation to come back for a double overtime victory over Northern Iowa.

The win puts the third-seeded Aggies (28-8) in the Sweet 16 for the third time in school history, the first since 2007.

Danuel House scored all 22 of his points in the second half and overtime, while Jalen Jones finished with 16 for Texas A&M – which has now won 10 of its last 11 games.

Jeremy Morgan had career highs of 36 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Panthers (23-13), who led 69-59 in the final minute of regulation before committing four turnovers in the final 29 seconds to spark the Aggies comeback.

FONTANA, Calif. – Jimmie Johnson somehow saved his fastest lap for last, and Southern California’s favorite racing son soared to another historic victory.

Johnson pulled away in overtime to beat Kevin Harvick on Sunday for his record sixth NASCAR Sprint Cup Series win at Fontana.

With his 77th career victory, Johnson passed Dale Earnhardt

for seventh place in NASCAR annals. And he did it in style: Johnson was third on the late restart, but he surged past leader Denny Hamlin while giving a little bump to Harvick before side-drafting and pulling away.

After showcasing his famed skills to snare another landmark win, the 40-year-old Johnson got a bit reflective when asked about his place in the sport.

“I feel like physically and mentally, I’m the

best that I’ve ever been in my career,” the sixtime series champion said. “I’m in the space I want to be in, which makes me want to stick around and do this for a lot of years. There’s no guarantees about when you’re going to win and have success, so I’ve been very, very fortunate to win 77 of these things, which blows my mind.”

Johnson finished with his fastest lap of the race to claim his second overtime win of the

young season, adding Fontana to Atlanta. He has won three of his last eight races after a 20race winless skid in his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet.

Harvick was in position to win for the second consecutive week before second-place Kyle Busch blew a tire with two laps to go.

Hamlin got off pit road first for his first lead of the race, but Johnson’s fresh tires and cleverness gave him the speed needed to get ahead.

There was a slight drop in total cholesterol levels, but no significant changes in LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, HDL (“good”) cholesterol, triglycerides, aerobic capacity, bone density, or fasting blood sugar and insulin levels. Sounds good, so far.

But here comes the bad news. People who used GH experienced a high rate of side effects. These included fluid retention, joint pain, breast enlargement and carpal tunnel syndrome.

A bigger concern is cancer. In laboratory studies, GH promotes the multiplication of cancer cells. Some epidemiological studies have found that people with naturally high levels of GH have higher rates of cancer. These studies by no means prove taking GH supplements raises a person’s risk of cancer, but it’s plausible they might.

So I don’t recommend taking GH supplements to fight aging. But there is a truly magical treatment that does slow aging in all parts of the body, including the brain – and it needn’t cause side effects.

If you’re regular readers of this column, you’ve probably guessed the name of the magical treatment: regular exercise. It will reduce your risk of many chronic illnesses and – it’s true – slow the ticking of the clock.

Dear Dr. K: A friend of mine who is in her 70s is getting growth hormone shots.

She says it fights aging. I’m dubious that anything can fight aging and worry about side effects. Am I just old-fashioned?

Dear Reader: Well, you certainly are right to ask these questions. If there was a treatment that could slow aging and was risk-free, I guess we’d all take it.

Growth hormone (GH) is a protein produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. It gets its name from the fact that it is important in stimulating growth during childhood. Children born with a growth hormone deficiency are destined to be very short unless they are treated with growth hormone early in life.

What about using GH in aging adults?

First of all, there is absolutely no evidence that taking GH supplements will lengthen a person’s life. However, it does appear to have some beneficial effects.

GH promotes an increase in muscle mass and a decrease in body fat. As men age, GH levels fall. During the same time span, muscle mass declines and body fat increases. And so (the theory goes), the way to arrest these effects of aging is to inject GH. To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of GH in healthy older people, a team of researchers reviewed 31 high-quality studies. Together, these studies evaluated 220 people who received GH and 227 people who did not. Two-thirds of the subjects were men; their average age was 69. The dosage of GH varied, as did the duration of therapy.

DEAR ABBY I am a young man who is in Jeanne college. When I Phillips was an infant, I was circumcised, and I feel violated my parents decided to circumcise me without my consent. When the doctor performed the surgery, he took too much off, which causes me pain.

When I was in grade school, I was sexually assaulted by an older classmate, but I feel much more violated from the circumcision because it took a part of me I can never get back. I am filled with hate and anger toward my parents, even though I know it is unfair to them because they believed they were making the right choice at the time.
