JOLIET – A Joliet councilwoman told her colleagues on Tuesday that the next accident at a far West Side intersection is “on you” when they did not side with her plea to put up stop signs against the advice of a city engineer.

The intersection at Theodore Street and Great Ridge Drive was the topic of lengthy discussions for the second consecutive night.

Quillman, who said she is often called by neighbors of the intersection, also made a case for the stop sign during a Monday meeting of the council’s Public Service Committee.

After it was apparent the council was not going along with her request that they override staff and order the stop signs, Quillman said opponents should watch for the next accident.

“It’s on this council, and it’s on the people who don’t do this,” she said. “I did my due diligence. If there’s another accident, it’s on you – not me.”

There have been 17 accidents at the in-

tersection from January 2013 to Feb. 15, according to a staff report to the Public Service Committee.

Quillman and neighbors at the intersection want signs that would stop motorists on Theodore.

The basic case against the stop sign is that Theodore is an arterial road carrying through traffic, while Grand Ridge is a residential street going into a subdivision.

Traffic Engineer Russ Lubash told the Public Service Committee that two other nearby intersections with residential streets have had more accidents and another one has had nearly as many.

“What we don’t want to see is an arterial roadway that is cluttered with stop signs that create new safety concerns,” Lubash said.

The city does plan to take some action at the intersection.

The Department of Public Works has recommended that the city post larger speed limit signs in more visible locations and space them closer together. Warning signs would also be used to alert motorists of upcoming intersections. Pavement

stripes would be used in such a way to reduce the speed of motorists turning left off Theodore. Also, police would step up speed enforcement along Theodore.

Members of the Public Service Committee objected to Quillman’s characterization of those actions as doing nothing.

“We’re not not doing anything,” said Councilman Jim McFarland, chairman of the committee.

He noted that the committee also will review the matter again once the staff recommendations were put into place.

“This issue is coming back to our committee,” McFarland said.

Train station bid approved

The council without discussion approved a $16 million contract with Walsh Construction to build a train station and Heritage Corridor boarding platform at the public transportation center under construction.

The bid had been a topic of previous meetings because of a delay imposed by the state in awarding the bid, which was submitted in June and has gone up $400,000 since then.

Plainfield Plan Commission moves on potential Costco site

vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Plan Commission on Tuesday approved a site subdivision for the Boulevard property at Route 30 and Interstate 55 – the same property unofficially slated for a future Costco.

No specific development has been proposed for the property. But the Plan Commission approved of village staff’s request to subdivide the property into three lots, marking the first step to spark development on the prime real estate. The recommendation will go to the village board in a future meeting.

“This is really just a preliminary effort to pave the way and facilitate behind the scenes or functional economic development outreach efforts,” village planner Jonathan Proulx said.

The 150-acre property is primarily vacant, undeveloped or agricultural. It is bounded by the Canadian National railroad right-of-way from the east, Route 30 from the south, Lily Cache Creek from the

Mink Creek cuts through half of the property.

The Boulevard property is adjacent to, and northwest of, the former truck stop property that is owned by the city of Joliet at the I-55 interchange.

The subdivision divides the property into three lots.

The first lot is 80 acres of property north of Mink Creek south of Renwick Road. The second 15-acre lot maps the footprint of Mink Creek. The third lot of 55 acres includes the “prime commercial parcel” at the interchange, according to village documents.

The village annexed the Boulevard property in 2007, and a Costco was originally slated to anchor the property, according to a listing on Loopnet.com.

The listing, last updated in 2008, suggests that Costco was a desired primary anchor tenant before the recession hit.

However, village officials have stopped short of naming Costco as a confirmed tenant.

Future plans

Plan Commission Chairman James Sobkoviak said that when detailed plans for the property come through, the commission will be looking closely at environmental impact to the creeks.

“Let [the developer] be aware that we’re going to be extremely careful about the effects to those two streams,” Sobkoviak said to Proulx. “We’ll be looking at possible pollution and runoffs and whatnot.”

After the meeting, Proulx said it was difficult to know when an anchor user may be selected. He said uncertainty associated with the state budget crisis may be delaying the project.

The property has been identified as a heavy part of the village’s proposed tax-increment financing district for the Route 30 corridor between I-55 and Renwick Road.

The village plans to resume the TIF district process, including holding public meetings, once it hires a permanent planning director.

The AMSOIL Championship Snocross national tour is returning Friday and Saturday to the Route 66 Raceway for its second run featuring the best snocross, or specialized snowmobile, racers in the world.

Chicago Speedway and AMSOIL Championship Snocross have been filling the drag strip at the Route 66 Raceway with snow for the past several weeks to get ready for the Hollywood Casino Snocross National, which is the last race before the snocross organization’s finale event at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

Last year’s event, held Feb. 20 to 21, was the first time AMSOIL Champion-

ship Snocross ventured south of Lake Geneva. And while the first night of racing was cold, a milder second day featured a large turnout for the new event.

“Based on what we saw last year with the quality of the product, the feedback and how we were able to logistically operate, we said we’ve got to bring the event back for year two,” Paddock said.

Last year, children and adults, snocross enthusiasts and locals looking for entertainment were enamored with the experience filled with snowmobiles flying 60 feet in the air at the event.

Evergreen Terrace murder trial begins

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – As Drumaine S. McKinley’s trial began Tuesday, the defense acknowledged what DNA evidence and surveillance video reportedly shows – McKinley fatally stabbed Joslyn Woods in a laundry room at Evergreen Terrace on Sept. 3, 2014.

But Will County Assistant Public Defender Dana Jakusz told Drumaine S. jurors during opening McKinley statements that the video will show Woods was the one who brought a knife to 363 N. Broadway, where she met with McKinley after arranging a paid sexual encounter online and she took it out to demand more money from him.

“Ms. Woods demands $180 for her services ... there’s a physical confrontation and Joslyn Woods reaches into her legging, pulls out a knife and starts striking [McKinley] leaving cuts to his hands and forearms,” Jakusz said. “He stabbed her back ... he reacted [and] doesn’t remember what occurred [next].”

But prosecutors said the 6-foot 3-inch 275-pound McKinley threw the young woman against the wall when the arrangement went bad and went after her in a brutal attack. “[Blood] was all over,” testified Chanika Hood, an Evergreen Terrace resident who discovered the body. “The whole [white] wall of the laundry room was red.”

Chad Evans was one of the first Joliet police officers on the scene and looked into the laundry room to see a white-handled knife on the floor near Woods’ body, he testified. Evans also noticed bloody footprints in the hallway.

Sgt. Tom Grutzius was on patrol downtown and found a “Boss” T-shirt

in a garbage can near Harrah’s Casino, he testified. Jurors saw the shirt has what appears to be a large amount of blood splattered on the front and a bloody handprint on the back. Grutzius also saw surveillance video that shows a shirtless man walking near Chicago Street.

Canine officer Darren Prochaska and his bloodhound, Amber, followed a scent from the shirt to Union Station where Officer Larry Collins found a pair of “blood soaked” socks in a garbage can, they testified.

Amber later followed a scent taken from the shirt to a residence in the 1400 block of East Washington Street. Detective Shawn Filipiak testified McKinley was found in a ravine behind the house and taken into custody that afternoon.

The trial is scheduled to continue Wednesday.

JOLIET – The new Will County Courthouse would have 11 floors – not 10 – and one floor would likely house the Public Defender’s Office, under a new plan pushed Tuesday by the Will County Board’s Capital Improvements Committee.

Under the plan, one of the floors would be shelled out for additional courtrooms to account for future population growth. The judicial complex, once complete, is expected to cost about $150 million to $160 million.

Each floor – including buildouts – costs about $10 million, however.

The original plan was to build 10 floors total, include one shelled out for future growth, said Jason Dwyer, project manager with the Darien-based firm Wight & Co., the firm hired for programming and design work.

Some committee members argued the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office would be better suited in the new courthouse, though noting that office would likely need three dedicated floors given its size.

Eleven floors – including a shelled floor – would allow for 38 courtrooms, Dwyer said, with additional courtrooms at satellite complexes in the northern and eastern sections of the county. There are 23 courtrooms in the current courthouse, six in the

Some committee members argued they should build 12 floors, but Dwyer said 11 would be enough, saying the most recent population projections suggest Will County may not reach 1.2 million residents by 2040 as previously estimated.

“You may take longer to get to that,” Dwyer said.

Will County Finance Committee

The Will County Finance Committee also met Tuesday to approve an ordinance authorizing a bond issuance of up to $275 million for capital projects, including a new courthouse, sheriff’s facility and health department.

Committee member Cory Singer, R-Frankfort, was the lone ‘no’ vote, questioning whether the county can

afford to divert 15 percent to 18 percent of RTA sales tax revenue over a 10-year-period to help build a new courthouse.

Committee member Jim Moustis argued “not one road project” would be affected by the county pulling $40 million to $50 million from the RTA fund during 10 years.

“Show me one project that’s not going to get done and I’ll listen to you,” Moustis said.

Singer argued there are too many unforeseen, much-needed road projects. There’s also the fact that local governments will soon be forced to pick up the state’s financial obligations as Illinois digs itself into a deeper fiscal crisis.

“I strongly believe that there will be a day that we, or another board, will look back and regret this decision of spending this much money on a new facility,” Singer said. “We can’t overlook the fact that Will County remains in Illinois, unfortunately. ... The state is completely and utterly broke.”

Transportation program resumes for veterans THE HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – The Will County Veterans’ Assistance Commission has reinstated its transportation program for Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital.

The VAC van broke down in early 2015, and the transportation program was suspended until the new van was obtained, VAC Superintendent Kristi McNichol said.

Three Democratic candidates vie for Will County circuit clerk position

JOLIET – The race for Will County circuit clerk is one of the more hotly contested local Democratic primary races this year with longtime officerholder Pam McGuire stepping down after the end of her fifth term.

McGuire has endorsed Andrea Chasteen, a longtime circuit clerk employee. She will battle it out in the March 15 Democratic primary with Robert Enright, a former Will County Circuit Clerk employee and current judicial project manager for Kane County.

Another Democrat, Barbara Guerrero – the deputy circuit clerk who last year was kicked off the ballot for inadequate signatures – said she is running as a write-in candidate.

Marlene M. Carlson, a Republican, also is running for circuit clerk but is unchallenged in the primary.

In addition to other duties, the circuit clerk’s office is charged with maintaining all records of traffic, civil and criminal cases in Will County.

Chasteen, 40, of Frankfort said she started at the Will County Circuit Clerk’s Office in 1995, moving up the ranks from clerk to her current position as director of operations. She holds a high school diploma from Lincoln-Way Central High School and is married with two children.

As director of operations, Chasteen said she is responsible for ensuring all aspects of the office runs smoothly, from the courtrooms and computer systems to customers. Her number of years with the office makes her uniquely qualified, she said.

Chasteen said providing efficient and timely service to customers, while advancing technology amid budget constraints, are two of the biggest challenge for the office. She said she led recent ef-

forts to revamp the website and make the circuit clerk’s site more mobile friendly.

To expand electronic filing services, the office has submitted an application with the Illinois Supreme Court to expand its pilot program initiative to increase e-filing capabilities across civil and criminal cases, she said.

Enright, 60, of New Lenox said he worked within the Information Technology Department for McGuire’s office for 15 years before resigning in 2013 to work for Kane County. He holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Northeastern Illinois University.

In Kane County, Enright said he now oversees the implementation of a new $6 million case management system for the county offices of state’s attorney, judges, public defender and circuit clerk.

In response to the remarks from Enright and Guerrero regarding turnover, Chasteen argued Tuesday the turnover rate is not due to poor training but the fact that many office employees are young and attending college for another career field. Or they leave to work for attorneys in the private sector.

LOCKPORT – The Fairmont School District 89 Board of Education appointed a new board secretary at last Thursday’s board meeting.

Members also considered approving Superintendent Sonya Whitaker’s recommendation to dismiss Kimberly Munch, her administrative assistant.

Whitaker said Tuesday that the board did not take action on the item.

The same proposal for Munch was made at a Jan. 20 board meeting, which failed in a 2-3 vote, said board member Joseph Dalpiaz, who took down the vote.

Last year, Lincoln-Way was one of 38 school districts statewide to receive a financial watch rating from ISBE. When asked why letters were sent to the six districts and not the rest on the watch list, Evans wrote the correspondence was to notify those districts of their financial watch status based on fiscal 2014 data.

ISBE monitors districts on the financial watch list closely and offers them technical assistance, according to ISBE. The districts are reviewed to

determine whether they meet the legal criteria to be certified in financial difficulty and qualify for a Financial Oversight Panel.

ISBE may require districts certified in financial difficulty to develop, adopt and submit a financial plan within 45 days that follows state board guidelines, according to state law. The district reports to ISBE on its compliance with the financial plan.

If the state determines that the district has failed to comply with the financial plan, it may rescind its approval of it and appoint a Financial Oversight Panel for the district.

Since Lincoln-Way was put on the watch list last year, the school district discussed several solutions to close the gap on multimillion-dollar budget deficits before settling on closing a school.

The information covers annual bound audits, annual cash flows by fund, projected cash flows, three-year financial projections, monthly payroll amounts, negotiated labor contracts and other information.

Tingley said the district provided last year similar information to ISBE. The letter from ISBE states an investigation into a district’s financial condition is the first step in a process to determine if conditions exist for a “certification of financial difficulty.”

“Our sincere hope is that the forthcoming investigation will identify opportunities for actions to be taken that will improve the financial condition of Lincoln-Way CHSD 210, avoid ‘certification of financial difficulty,’ and, most importantly, result in fiscal stability,” the letter stated.

NEW LENOX – State education officials plan to investigate the finances of Lincoln-Way School District 210 and five other school districts on the financial watch list.

Lincoln-Way Superintendent Scott Tingley received a Feb. 19 letter from the Illinois State Board of Education informing him that because the district is on the financial watch list, the state board will be “exercising our authority … to initiate a proper investigation of the financial integrity of [District 210].”

Tingley mentioned the letter at the Feb. 25 board meeting.

“We welcome this, because this is proving No. 1, we are a district in financial difficulty. We know that. We have not shied away from that,” Tingley said about the state investigation. “And No. 2, we are providing information to get better.”

Recently, ISBE sent letters to six school districts – including Lincoln-Way – regarding their financial watch status, ISBE Communications Director Laine Evans wrote in an email.

JOLIET – A recurring theme emerged during Tuesday’s Will County Finance Committee: State government is increasingly turning into a deadbeat while pressuring local governments to do more with less.

Finance Committee members approved lending up to $3 million to the Will County Health Department to stave off a potential cash-flow problem because of the state’s budget impasse.

Susan Olenek, health department executive director, said the department’s $29 million operation is split three ways with fees and reimbursements, federal and state grant dollars and a health tax levy.

“As you know, with state government and the non-payments taking place with their obligations, we are seeing that we’re not quite making our revenue numbers,” Olenek said.

Committee members also agreed to cover a $101,000 project – that was to be partially funded through an Illinois grant – for new LED lighting

in the Will County Adult Detention Facility.

Kathy Percora, grant assistant for the Will County Resource and Recovery and Energy Division, said the county was approved for a $46,000 grant through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. But that money has yet to arrive because of the state budget impasse, she said.

The committee also approved Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots’ request to increase election judges’ compensation from $135 to $150 for working on Election Day and taking the required training course. That amounts to an additional $22,500 – for a total of $225,000 per election.

Schultz Voots said election judges have not seen a compensation increase during her 14 years heading up the office. Yet unfunded state mandates – such as requiring sameday voter registration at all 300 polling places – have increased judges’ responsibilities significantly, she said.

All action must still be approved by the full County Board, which meets later this month.

Paddock expects this weekend’s event to attract more people through word of mouth and a favorable forecast.

“Anytime you do outdoor events, the weather is a big unknown,” Paddock said. “It was incredibly challenging Friday evening [last year], and almost perfect Saturday. The weather seems to be looking good this year.”

Holding the event during the automobile racing offseason allows the administration to seize on an opportunity to stay relevant during winter, Paddock said.

Probably the only drawback to the event was that the snow didn’t melt fast enough in time for the drag racing season, Paddock said, adding that this year, AMSOIL Championship Snocross will help pick up the snow after the event.

Hibbert said the track is tight and the close proximity to the fans makes it a unique venue.

QUICK NEWS Romeoville to offer CERT course

ROMEOVILLE – The Romeoville Emergency Management Agency is offering a free CERT program to Romeoville area residents who want to learn how to be better prepared before, during and after an emergency, according to an agency news release.

CERT Basic Training is designed to prepare people to help themselves and others in the event of a catastrophic disaster.

The course consists of eight different modules. Each module is three hours long, for a total of 24 hours of training over four weeks.

The classes will be held 6 to 9 p.m. Tues-

day and Thursday evenings from March 8 to April 2 at the Romeoville Emergency Management Agency, 195 S. Budler Road, Romeoville.

Participants must be at least 16. If students are between 16 and 18 years old, a parent or guardian must accompany them.

There is a minimum class size of eight participants. The course is subject to cancellation if size is not reached. Maximum course size is 25.

Preceded by her husband of 58 years, only weeks before, Warren Lee Eddy (2015). Caring for Warren was Jonetta’s first priority. So she put aside the aches and pains of everyday life in order to provide Warren with a better quality of life until the aches and pains became unbearable weeks after Warren’s death. Raymond Dean Guinto Sr., age 72, of Joliet, passed away Monday, Feb. 29, 2016, at his home.

Born Feb. 2, 1944, in Sherman, TX, Raymond Dean was a son of the late Elpidio B. and Lillian (Anglin) Guinto. He was raised in Romeoville, until moving to Indiana where he graduated from high school in Terre Haute. Ray was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and honorably served during the Vietnam era. On July 27, 1967, Ray married Linda Brooks in Kansas City, MO. He retired as a dispatcher for UPS in 1995, after 27 years of service, and was a member of the American Legion. Ray enjoyed camping, fishing and golfing, but will most be remembered for his love of being with family.

Survivors include his wife, Linda; children, Dawn (Don) Bonner of Channahon, Denise Kovacevich of Joliet, Dana (Matt) Surges of

Mary J. Crump, age 103, of Wilmington passed away Sunday, Feb. 28, 2016, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

Born Dec. 15, 1912, in Mitchell, Indiana, Mary Jane was a daughter of the late John and Katie (Jones) Welch. A member of Calvary Apostolic Church in Romeoville, Mary will be most remembered for her love of family.

Survivors include three children, Kenneth (Janet M.) Haycox of Philadelphia, Tennessee, Charlotte (Glenn) Bye of Wilmington and John (Janet S.) Haycox of Athens, Alabama; one stepdaughter, Betty (Bob) Stokes of New Albany, Indiana; grandchildren, Kenny (Elaine) Haycox, Anita Wilson, Robin (Steve) Smith, Carolyn (Greg) Allred, Jeff Fetz, Richard Fetz, Rodney (Vicky) Bye and Angie (Ricky) Popplewell; 32 great-grandchildren; and 23 great-great-grandchildren.

Our Special Stephanie became an angel on Feb. 20, 2016. She entered heaven peacefully after a 35-year battle with heart disease at RML Hospital in Hinsdale. She was born July 17, 1980, at St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet.

Stephanie worked at Thomas Jefferson School in Joliet, Brookstone at Louis Joliet Mall, Dairy Queen in Shorewood, Michael’s Pizza on Essington and numerous other jobs.

She was a 1998 graduate of Joliet West High School and attended Joliet Junior College in Culinary Arts and Northern Illinois University. She graduated from Kish College in 2005.

She loved acting. Along with being in the musical “Honk” at Kish College, she was in the movies, “The Break Up” and “Fred Claus.”

Her other loves included singing, dancing and watching crime TV shows. Stephanie had a great sense of humor and was very protective of her family. She gave money to those in need and gave out bags of candy for Halloween and Christmas to people at Northwestern Hospital while she was a patient there from October 2015 to January 2016.

Stephanie leaves behind her precious son, Tyler Mays; her loving parents, Betty Mays and Stephen Mays; a wonderful brother, Steve Mays; a fantastic sister, Stacie Mays; and a caring niece, Aliren Mays. She was loved by all of her family, friends and all that knew her. “Pump it up Stephanie! We love you eternally!”

Kim was born on Aug. 23, 1971, at Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet to parents Sharon Gehringer and Gerry McAdams. She grew up in Manhattan and later moved to Iroquois county. Her hobbies included listening to music and going to concerts.

Her sense of humor and caring attitude brought a smile to many people’s faces while bartending for most of her life. She also worked for Gallagher Construction and T.J Lambrecht.

Survivors of Kim are daughters, Samantha McAdams and Meghan McAdams; father, Gerry McAdams; stepmother, Liz McAdams; nephew, Dylan McAdams; and sister, Kelly McAdams-Elwell.

Kim was preceded by her mother, Sharon Gehringer; stepbrother, James Swinson; and brother-in-law, Dan Elwell.

Kimberly’s wishes were to be cremated.

There will be a memorial party on Sunday, March 13, 2016, at the Peotone American Legion from 2 to 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

Special thanks to all who have helped show support to Kim during her fight and to the girls. Although the trip did not feel long to us left missing her she would say what a long strange trip it’s been.

Homicides, shootings in city double over same period in ’15

CHICAGO – Homicides and shootings have doubled in Chicago so far this year compared with the same period in 2015, and police have seized fewer illegal guns – more possible signals that officers have become less aggressive in the aftermath of a shooting video released last fall.

Interim Police Superintendent John Escalante said Tuesday that he was so concerned about officers possibly holding back that he filmed a video for the entire department in which he encouraged them to do their jobs and assured them that a federal probe of the force was not aimed at individuals.

Legislature: Illinois revenue to grow less than 1 percent

SPRINGFIELD – Legislative analysts predict that Illinois revenue will grow only by $200 million this year – less than 1 percent.

The bipartisan Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability’s figure released Tuesday is significantly lower than Gov. Bruce Rauner’s prediction. A commission report said the Republican governor counts $925 million in revenue that “can be described in varying degrees from being unlikely to uncertain.”

A Rauner spokeswoman didn’t immediately comment.

The report said the administration counts on $500 million in federal Medicaid reimbursement under an obsolete formula, $200 million from a possibly complex sale of the Thompson Center state office building in Chicago; and sweeping the state’s “rainy day” fund of $275 million. Ballot challenge against Cruz tossed by Ill. judge

CHICAGO – A judge has dismissed a claim that Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz isn’t eligible for the Illinois ballot because he was born in Canada.

Cook County Circuit Court Judge Maureen Ward Kirby tossed the case on a technicality Tuesday.

Kirby said the suburban Chicago attorney who filed the complaint, Lawrence Joyce, failed to give a copy of it to Cruz or state electoral board members, as required by Illinois law. Instead, Joyce served only lawyers representing Cruz and the board.

Joyce said the Texas senator can’t be president because he wasn’t born in the U.S. Cruz and some legal experts say he’s eligible because his mother was a U.S. citizen when he was born.

Joyce said he’ll decide whether to appeal after seeing how Cruz fares in Super Tuesday primaries.

Medical marijuana sales nearly $1.5M in February

CHICAGO – Illinois medical marijuana shops had their best month yet in February with nearly $1.5 million in sales, bringing total retail sales to more than $4.4 million since the program began Nov. 9.

Program director Joseph Wright announced Tuesday that registered dispensaries served 3,042 unique patients during February. Two new dispensaries joined the program last month, raising the total to 29 shops as of Monday.

Weather creates slippery conditions for jets at O’Hare

CHICAGO – Snowy conditions at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport have led to a small jet sliding off a runway and a commercial jet sliding on a taxiway.

A Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman said an Embraer Phenom E55P flown by private operator NetJets slid off a runway around noon Tuesday. A Chicago Aviation Department spokeswoman said the plane originally was headed to Executive Airport in Wheeling but landed at O’Hare.

No injuries were reported. The Embraer Phenom carries up to nine occupants.

The FAA spokeswoman said a short time later, a McDonnell Douglas MD-83 operated by American Airlines requested to be towed to the terminal after sliding on a taxiway.

The city Aviation Department said more than 375 flights have been canceled at O’Hare because of snow and freezing rain.

Trump, Clinton claim big Super Tuesday wins The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton swept through the South on Super Tuesday, claiming victory in their parties’ primaries in delegate-rich Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and Virginia. The front-runners appeared ever more likely to end up in a general election showdown.

On the Republican side, Ted Cruz won his home state of Texas, the night’s single biggest prize, as well as neighboring Oklahoma.

Trump’s dominance has rattled Republican leaders, who fear he’s unelectable against Clinton in November. Even as Trump professed to have good relationships with his party’s elite, he issued a warning to House Speaker Paul Ryan, who declared earlier in the day that “this party does not prey on people’s prejudices.” Trump said that if the two don’t get along, “he’s going to have to pay a big price.”

But all efforts to stop Trump have failed, including an aggressive campaign by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio to discredit the billionaire businessman.

For Rubio, Super Tuesday turned into a bitter disappointment. He emerged with his first victory in Minnesota but failed to live up to the wider hopes of the numerous Republican officeholders who have promoted him as the party’s best alternative to Trump.

With an eye on Florida’s March 15 primary, Rubio vowed to keep up efforts to “unmask the true nature of the front-runner in this race.”

Cruz desperately needed his win in Texas in order to stay in the race. He’s the only Republican to beat Trump this primary season, a fact he wielded as he called on Rubio and other candidates to step aside.

Grand jury: 2 bishops hid sex abuse of hundreds of children

The Associated Press ALTOONA, Pa. – Two Catholic bishops who led a small Pennsylvania diocese helped cover up the sexual abuse of hundreds of children by more than 50 priests and other religious leaders over a 40-year period, according to a grand jury report that portrays the church as holding such sway over law enforcement that it helped select a police chief.

The 147-page report issued Tuesday on sexual abuse in the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese, home to nearly 100,000 Roman Catholics, was based partly on evidence from a secret diocesan archive opened through a search warrant over the summer.

In announcing the findings, Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane said the diocese’s two previous bishops “placed their desire to avoid public scandal over the well-being of

children.”

No criminal charges are being filed in the case because some abusers have died, the statute of limitations has expired, or victims are too traumatized to testify, she said.

Of the victims, Kane said: “Their souls were killed as children. They weren’t out playing baseball; they were trying to avoid priests.”

The report was especially critical of Bishops James Hogan and Joseph Adamec. Hogan, who headed the diocese from 1966 to 1986, died in 2005.

Adamec, who succeeded him, retired in 2011.

Adamec cited possible self-incrimination in refusing to testify before the grand jury. But in a court filing, his attorney said the accusations against the 80-year-old Adamec are unfounded. He required 14 priests accused under his watch to undergo psychiatric evaluation, the filing said. Nine of them were suspended or removed

from ministry, and the five who were reinstated never re-offended, his attorney wrote.

“Bishop Adamec’s handling of abuse allegations has no similarity to other clergy abuse scandals,” his attorney wrote.

The current bishop, Mark Bartchak, is not accused of any wrongdoing. He recently suspended a few priests named as alleged abusers in the report, though the grand jury said it remains “concerned the purge of predators is taking too long.”

In a statement, Bartchak said: “I deeply regret any harm that has come to children.”

The clergy sex abuse crisis erupted in 2002, when The Boston Globe reported that the Boston Archdiocese had transferred child-molesting priests from parish to parish to protect them.

Similar scandals involving hundreds of offenders and victims have since erupted across the U.S. and beyond.

ALBANY, N.Y. – A New York court Tuesday refused to throw out a fraud lawsuit against Donald Trump over his former school for real estate investors.

The Appellate Division unanimously rejected Trump’s request to dismiss the 2013 suit, ruling that a six-year statute of limitations applies. The four justices also denied New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s request for an immediate judgment, saying there are material issues of fact that should be decided at trial.

Schneiderman alleges that Trump University was unlicensed since it began operating in 2005 and promised lessons with real estate experts handpicked by Trump, only one of whom had ever met him. The attorney general said the school used “bait-and-switch” tactics, inducing students to enroll in increasingly expensive seminars.

Trump, now seeking the Republican nomination for president, has denied any wrongdoing. He has said it was “a terrific school” with 98 percent approval ratings by its students. His attorney Jeffrey Goldman said the midlevel court failed to explain why it reversed previous rulings and said they intend to appeal to New York’s highest court.

Schneiderman, a Democrat, sued Trump and the school, which changed its name to the Trump Entrepreneur Initiative before it closed in 2010, for $40 million. The lawsuit seeks restitution and damages for more than 5,000 students nationwide, including 600 New Yorkers, who paid up to $35,000 each.

“Today’s decision means our entire fraud case can move forward,” Schneiderman said. “We look forward to demonstrating in a court of law that Donald Trump and his sham for-profit college defrauded more than 5,000 consumers out of millions of dollars.”

Trump filed complaints with the state’s ethics commission in 2013, four months after the lawsuit was filed, alleging Schneiderman pursued it to wring out campaign contributions from Trump’s daughter Ivanka. The commission dropped the complaint after a review. Schneiderman denied it, and his campaign returned the $500 donation Ivanka Trump had made in 2012.

Trump’s fellow Republican candidates have attacked him over litigation against the school, including a class-action suit in California. Trump criticized the judge in that case. Tuesday’s ruling coincided with Republican primaries in 11 states.

WASHINGTON – After an Oval Office sit-down Tuesday did nothing to move Republican Senate leaders off their hard line against a Supreme Court nomination, Democrats pulled out another weapon in the heated election-year fight: Donald Trump.

In a White House meeting that lasted less than an hour, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, told President Barack Obama that any confirmation process during a presidential campaign would politicize the court. They offered up no potential candidates that would win their backing and no route to filling the seat.

“This vacancy will not be filled this year,” McConnell told reporters after the meeting.

Democrats accused Republicans of trying to hold the seat open so that a Republican president can fill it. That president could be Trump, they noted, hoping to needle a GOP establishment uncomfortable with the prospects of Trump presidency.

While the men huddled at the White House, voters in 12 states were preparing to weigh in on a presidential contest that has tanked Obama’s chances of filling the seat – but also given Democrats a new line of attack.

As they emerged from the meeting, they quickly linked the GOP strategy to the Republican front-runner poised to pick up significant momentum Tuesday night.

“All we want them to do is fulfill their constitutional duty and do their job, and at this stage, they decided not to do that,” Reid said. “They think that they can wait and see what President Trump will do, I guess.”

There should be bipartisan effort to prevent chicago schools bailout To the Editor: John Adams once said “facts are stubborn things.” And so they are with state Rep. Kate Cloonen who is entitled to her own opinions … but not her own facts.

Fact: Representative Cloonen voted to put House Speaker Mike Madigan in charge – and now he and Democratic Senate President John Cullerton are publicly rejecting the governor’s call to protect taxpayers from a Chicago bailout.

Fact: Cloonen’s leaders – Madigan and Cullerton – are actually demanding a bailout for Chicago, to the tune of about $500 million, while Governor Rauner and Republican leaders refuse to support one.

Fact: Cullerton has threatened to hold up money for your local school districts until Springfield changes the school funding formula to take money away from suburban schools and give it to Chicago.

Those are the inconvenient facts; the very facts Rep. Cloonen has been silent about it while her political bosses demand a $500 million Chicago bailout, oppose giving CPS the ability to go bankrupt and threaten to hijack funding for your local schools.

So I would ask Rep. Cloonen to answer two simple questions if she truly stands with Governor Rauner and Republican leaders in opposing a Chicago bailout: 1) Will you support legislation to give Chicago Public Schools the authority to declare bankruptcy and restructure its finances, to ensure no one outside Chicago pays for Chicago’s mistakes?

2) Will you support and urge your leaders to swiftly approve Governor Rauner’s K-12 school funding proposal with no strings attached, ensuring we keep schools open in the fall and don’t hold them hostage to Chicago’s financial schemes?

If Rep. Cloonen answers yes to both questions, we look forward to joining in her in a bipartisan effort to prevent a Chicago bailout. If she dodges either of these questions, we will know what she’s really up to.

End practice of state suing inmates for cost of their incarceration

SPRINGFIELD – Sometimes it seems state lawmakers are determined to keep punishing people even after their debts to society have been paid.

A good case in point is a law that was put on the books back in the 1980s that allows the state to sue inmates and force them to pay for the cost of their incarcerations.

I remember when that law was debated more than a quarter of a century ago.

I thought the measure was mean-spirited and of little value then. And I still do.

In case our lawmakers haven’t noticed, our prisons are full of people who were reared in poverty and whose potential for rising out of it is limited by their felony records.

Suing someone for the cost of their incarceration reminds me of the Chinese practice under Mao Zedong of billing family members of

It’s just plain mean.

Instead of trying to heap more punishment on the newly released, Illinois should do everything it can to help them get back on their feet.

But Illinois doesn’t.

For example, under state licensing laws, felons can be barred from more than 100 vocations.

We should be doing everything we can to help folks get jobs. That’s why we should eliminate such barriers.

And that’s how I feel about this nonsense of suing folks for the cost of their incarcerations.

And apparently I’m not the only one who feels that way.

New legislation would repeal the practice of suing prisoners and parolees for the cost of their incarceration.

State Rep. Kelly Cassidy, D-Chicago, and State Sen. Daniel Biss, D-Evanston, have introduced bills in the Legislature that would prohibit the Illinois Department of Corrections from suing inmates for the cost of their room and board.

“The odds are stacked against the men and women coming out of our prison system and attempting to put their lives back together. Any barrier to reentry is a path to recidivism.

We need to be doing everything in our power to remove those barriers, not add more,” Cassidy said.

She couldn’t be more right.

dgoss@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Joliet Catholic boys basketball coach Joe Gura had an apt description of what transpired Tuesday night in the first semifinal game at the Class 3A Lincoln-Way West Regional.

“A fire started,” Gura said. “Ah, that’s all right, we’ll just throw a little water on it. But we didn’t get enough water on it in time.”

Providence Catholic, the No. 8 seed in Sub-Sectional A of the Streator Sectional, sent No. 2 JCA’s outstanding season crashing to a halt with a re-

sounding 61-37 victory.

“In my six years, this may be as well as we have played,” Providence coach Tim Trendel said. “That’s a credit to the kids.”

“I’ll follow up on what coach Trendel said,” Gura added. “That was Providence’s best game, and it was our worst. That’s not the best combination.

Kudos to them. I wish them well from here on.”

Providence (13-18) advanced to Friday night’s regional final against Lincoln-Way West, who defeated Rich East in the second semifinal.

JCA (21-6), facing a box-and-one against East Suburban Catholic Con-

ference Player of the Year Jalen Jackson, took a 5-2 lead when Harold Davis hit a 3-pointer with 5:46 left in the first quarter.

From then on, it was all Celtics.

Providence went on a 25-3 run to lead 27-8 with 2:46 left in the first half. It was 33-14 at the break, and any chance the Hilltoppers had of crawling back into the fray evaporated in a third quarter where Providence outscored JCA, 16-5, to lead, 47-19.

“When they were still struggling to score in the third quarter, we were feeling more confident, like we had it,” said Celtics senior guard Eric Justice, who hounded Jackson in the box-

and-one, with relief help from Martez Malone.

“Jackson is a great player. We tagged him and limited his scoring. We did that the last game, too (a 51-43 JCA victory Jan. 9). He can shoot and drive.

My teammates did a great job helping on him.”

His teammates also did a great job shutting down the Hilltoppers’ inside game, when they attempted to go that route. Jackson was 1 for 11 shooting before hitting two consolation 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and scored nine points.

Lincoln-Way Central gets past Plainfield South

cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Although Lincoln-Way Central’s boys basketball team figured to have a good shot at advancing to its first regional final since 2007, weird things happen in the playoffs.

The Knights entered Tuesday’s Class 4A Lincoln-Way Central Regional semifinal against Plainfield South without senior forward Mikey Koszela in the scorebook. And the upstart Cougars were determined to spoil the party by keeping their season going a bit longer.

But to the Knights’ credit, they executed down the stretch and rallied for a 51-44 victory over South, which advanced them to Friday’s 7 p.m. finals against the winner of Wednesday’s game between Joliet Central and Plainfield East.

Central (18-8), which will be going after its first regional championship since 2001, trailed, 34-31, with more than seven minutes remaining but then used a decisive 9-0 run to take

JCA shot 23.1 percent on 12 of 52. The Hilltoppers were 9 of 48 until late in the fourth quarter, a .188 clip. That’s how good the Providence defense was.

“We came prepared and executed our game plan down to a T,” Celtics senior forward Anthony DiNardi said. “Our shots were falling, too, which never hurts. It definitely was one of our top games start to finish.”

Providence connected on 22 of 38 shots, a .579 mark, including 7 of 14 from 3-point range.

DiNardi hit all six of his shots for 12 points to go with eight rebounds. Jake Schutter, who grabbed eight first-half rebounds, led Providence with 21 points. He hit 7 of 11 shots and 5 of 6 free throws.

The Celtics not only shot well, they controlled the boards, 35-20. Their defensive rebounding limited the Hilltoppers to precious few second-chance opportunities.

“To work so hard all week and then beat our top rival, to

control over the Cougars (9-21), who could get no closer than one point back the rest of the way.

“It’s survive and go on,” Knights coach Bob Curran said. “That one’s behind us now, so we need to get focused and see who we’ll play on Friday night. To South’s credit, coach [Tim] Boe had a good game plan, and some of their guys are hard to guard, and they shoot the ball well. They stretched us out a bit and had some inside scoring, which hurt us, too.

“But we held them to 44 points, and if we can keep teams in the lowto-mid-40s, then you don’t have to be great on offense. I thought our guys did a decent job of hitting free throws down the stretch and we had a lot of fouls to give toward the end of the game, so we were able to get a little more aggressive. Our game plan was make them work for their shots.”

Things looked great for the Knights in the early going after Jarret Gmazel (13 points) hit back-toback 3-pointers to give the hosts an early 17-10 lead. But South outscored them 9-2 through the rest of the quar-

ter to pull to within 21-19 at halftime.

Things were back-and-forth throughout the third quarter, with the Cougars collecting the final four points from Jacob Buchner (17 points, six rebounds) on a layup and two free throws to take a 32-31 advantage into the final eight minutes.

Kevin Valentine (six points) made a rebound basket with 7:09 left to give South a 34-31 lead but then the visitors went almost five minutes without scoring while Central responded with nine points, which included five free throws from Aaron Michalak (six points).

But while the Knights still led, 44-38, with 59 seconds left after two free throws from Isaiah Malone (13 points), the outcome was still far from being resolved. Buchner hit a 3-pointer seven seconds later to make it 44-41 and then converted a threepoint play with 37 seconds left to pull his team to within 45-44.

That was as close as South would get, however, as Gmazel, Mitch Kwasigroch (eight points, nine rebounds) and Malone all hit a pair of

free throws to wrap things up. The Knights made good on 21 of 25 freethrow attempts during the final half and 22 of 27 for the contest.

Central also received nine points from Isaac Panfil, while South also got 10 points and seven rebounds from Deantre DeYoung and six points from Ryan Kelly.

“This was a testament to the guys in our locker room and to the pride that they have,” South coach Tim Boe said. “We’ve seen it day in and day out. And it says something about our conference and the competition that we play. Central is a good team.

We wanted to be press them a little bit, and we sped them up a little bit and were able to make some plays off that.

“They’re so gritty on the defensive end and, obviously, they’re wellcoached. We couldn’t get anything going in the paint. Against a team like this, they’re going to make a couple of runs. It’s a credit to our guys that they were able to withstand that.

But we couldn’t go five minutes without scoring.”

Trendel had been saying since early in the season that Providence expected to be playing its best ball at the end.

“I said that because I knew the good kids we have,” he said.

“These kids did it. They stuck together through the tough times. They know how it tasted after they got knocked in the mouth.

“We knew they (Hilltoppers) were good, but we probably were more prepared for this game that any in my six years.”

Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – In any sport, the Nos. 8-9 seed game is always intriguing, as two evenly matched teams that usually provide a great matchup.

Tuesday night found that matchup in boys basketball at the Class 4A Minooka Regional semifinal between eighth-seeded Bolingbrook and No. 9 Lemont. The game did not disappoint, as the Raiders came away with a 61-45 victory.

Bolingbrook (15-10), winner of nine of their past 10 games, goes to the regional final and will play No. 1 seed Minooka at 7 p.m. Friday on the Indians’ home floor.

Bolingbrook, which led, 41-30, after

three quarters, used a patience offense against the Indians’ zone and an opportunistic defense to go on a 12-3 run the final 4:25 of the quarter.

Two layups by Devon Sams (11 points) off Lemont turnovers within a 20-second span ended the quarter, although not without a little controversy as the Raiders’ Zach Grady threw a full-court shot at the buzzer and hit nothing but net. The shot was waved off as the officials said it hit the netting above midcourt.

Bolingbrook built the lead to 49-31 with 4:49 remaining on the shooting of Darick Anderson (13 points) and Nana Akenten (17 points, seven rebounds).

“That was a good win, everyone is tough this time of year,” Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost said.

“With our depth, I think we just wore them down in the second half.

We wanted to keep Pipes in front of us and try to shut everyone else down.

We really took care of the ball well and rebounded well in the second half. We are excited to play Minooka. They are the No. 1 seed for a reason and it will be tough on Friday.”

Lemont tried to get back in the game, as the Indians cut into the lead at 49-36 with 3:30 to go, but could get no closer. Pipes led Lemont with 14 points and Nick Wisz had 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

“It has been a transition, but we have grown a lot together this year,” he said. “We work hard, and we are playing well and hitting our stride at the right time.”

“Zach (Grady) and I have to get the rebounds and we did that in the second half tonight,” Akenten said. “At halftime, we talked about wanting to have practice this week and get ready for Friday, and we needed to care care of business in the second half.”

The first half saw a back-and-forth game with Lemont jumping out to a 5-0 lead, only to have the Raiders tie it.

It was back and forth with the Indians holding a 9-8 first-quarter lead.

Trailing, 16-15, the Raiders went on a 7-0 run to take a 22-16 lead with a minute left before P.J. Pipes hit a three for Lemont to cut it to 22-19 at the half.

Neither team shot well in the half, with the Raiders going 8 of 26 from the field and the Indians 8 of 23.

CHANNAHON – Defense and Joe Butler best answer why the Minooka boys basketball team won the Southwest Prairie Conference title and received the top seed in the balanced Class 4A Lockport Sectional.

After watching No. 14 Romeoville (10-17) shoot 58 percent in the first half, the Indians turned up the defense and held the Spartans to 25-percent shooting in the second half and overtime.

Butler, Minooka’s 6-foot-3 senior, scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Indians to a 51-46 Class 4A Minooka Regional semifinal victory in overtime. The Indians will meet Bolingbrook at 7 p.m.

Friday for the title.

“This is my senior year, and I was determined not to let us lose,” Butler said. “At the start of the year, our goals were to put 2016 under the conference and regional championship spots on our championship board in the gym.

Hopefully, on Friday against a great Bolingbrook club, we can accomplish our second goal.”

Tuesday night’s game was the rubber match between the SPC rivals.

Romeoville handed the SPC champion Indians the first of their two losses in the SPC with 48-42 overtime win Dec 18. In the Feb. 5 rematch, the Indians had to rally in the final three minutes to win, 53-47.

As Butler said then, “Romeoville really matches up well with us. They give us problems.”

“We played our hearts out tonight,” Salter said. “We are a very young team, and Minooka is a senior-dominated team. We really wanted to knock off the No. 1 seed.”

Roberts broke the hearts of the Spartans when he buried his third 3-pointer for a 46-44 lead the Indians would not relinquish.

“We were very shaky in the first half,” Roberts said. “Our shots were not falling and we were not playing our customary defense. We picked it up our defensive pressure in the second half and overtime and as always are shots started to fall late in the game.”

Butler converted a pair of free throws for a 48-44 Indians’ lead. Cappelletti brought the Spartans back within 48-46 with 22 seconds left. Butler hit one free throw and Roberts finished off the Spartans with a pair of free throws with 5 seconds left.

“It’s always difficult to play a SPC rival for the third time, this season,” Minooka coach Scott Tanaka said.

“We won this game tonight because of our defense and Joe Butler. Joe gave a Player of the Year performance tonight. Without him our season would be over.”

For Romeoville coach Marc Howard the future is bright.

Howard returns Salter and sophomores London Stamps and Dontia Johnson. Robert Johnson also returns.

“We played the No.1 seed and our conference champion, once again right to the end,” Howard said. “We played outstanding for four quarters, but we ran out of gas in the overtime.”

Shaw Media Correspondent NAPERVILLE – A sporadic offense and poor free-throw shooting combined to handcuff Joliet West in the Class 4A Neuqua Valley Regional semifinal Tuesday.

So the Tigers turned to their defense and it delivered.

West forced four turnovers and Elijah Ward blocked a potential game-tying shot during the final seconds of a 50-48 win over the host Wildcats. That puts No. 3 sectional seed West (18-9) in the regional final against No. 6 Plainfield North at 7 p.m. Friday in Naperville.

“We didn’t force as many turnovers as I would like, but they came at the right time,” West coach Nick DiForti said. “A lot of that was our guards pressuring their guards.”

Leading 50-48, Neuqua Valley turned to 6-foot-8 senior forward Jason Cushing for its final shot and a chance to tie. Ward, a 6-4 junior, was up to the challenge.

“I knew he was a lefty and coach told me to contest the shot with my right hand,” Ward said. “I made him go to the right and I stayed on his left hand.”

“He’s a good defender and made a great play against a good offensive player,” DiForti said of Ward. “We wanted our best defenders against their best players and we did that over the final few possessions. What else could you have asked for?”

at the free-throw line, especially in the final minute. West went 1 for 6 over the final 54 seconds to allow the No. 11 seed (11-19) a chance to tie the score in the final seconds. The Tigers made 7 of 16 foul shots for the game.

“We struggle at the free-throw line on and off, and today, we were off,” DiForti said. “It especially hurt down the

stretch because it was a close game.”

“We have to shoot better from the free-throw line,” Ward said. “That’s something we’re going to work on in practice.”

A defensive change down the stretch may have given the Tigers an edge.

“We went a little smaller down the stretch trying to pressure their guards,” DiForti said. “It was a gamble that I could say worked because we won. But I’ll have to look at the tape and see if we could have done better with one or two of our big guys in there.”

“Our defense was big down the stretch,” Ward said. “We had to turn it up on defense.”

Neuqua Valley made eight 3-pointers, all coming in the first three quarters. Trailing 46-45 with 2:12 left, West sophomore Eddie Creal drove the lane and found Ward on the opposite block.

He made the layup, giving the Tigers the lead for good at 47-46 with 1:21 to play.

“My teammate drove and my defender stepped over,” Ward said. “(Creal) gave me a good pass.”

Junior Teyvion Kirk led the Tigers with 11 points. Sophomore Mike Smith had nine off the bench and junior Trevian Bell added eight.

“It’s good to get this one under our belts because we are so young,” DiForti said. “They are all young and this was a great experience for them.”

Shaw Media Correspondent NEW LENOX – A sturdy second-half defense was the difference in Lincoln-Way West’s 64-57 victory over Rich East in Tuesday’s Class 3A regional semifinal in the Warriors’ gym.

“Rich East is athletic and we got ourselves in trouble,” Warriors coach Brian Flaherty said.

The trouble was named Darnell Edmond, who scored 16 of his 19 points in the first half for the Rockets – 12 of them on a quartet of 3-pointers.

“We had to chase him off the 3-point line, make him put the ball on the deck,” Marco Pettinato said. “We had talked about it.”

“With every sport, people say ‘Oh, you guys might not be able to beat Providence.’ ” Pettinato said. “People say that a lot about Lincoln-Way sports. It’s one of those private-pub-

lic school things. It’s something to be excited about, a Friday night game at home against a team from the same town.”

The Warriors (17-9) and Rockets (1314) were tied at 28 at the half, an opening 16 minutes that featured nine lead changes and a pair of ties, highlighted

by Edmond’s 16-point outburst for the Rockets and Jay Bumstead’s trio of 3-pointers in the first quarter for the Warriors.

Edmond’s third 3 made it 18-16, and Nathaniel Reese’s basket with four seconds left in the quarter gave Rich East a 20-16 advantage.

The Warriors tied the score on Pettinato’s layup 1:38 into the second, and the lead was exchanged once more, the Rockets leading by as much as four points before West tied it on Erik Christensen’s two free-throws with 2.6 seconds left in the half.

USF family loses longtime coach Dick Smith University of St. Francis softball players will have a patch on their helmets this season to honor longtime coach Dick Smith.

It’s a fitting tribute to a coach who not only won, but also did things the right way.

Smith died Saturday in Algonquin after a battle with cancer. He was 83.

“Dick never concerned himself with the wins and losses of the program or the many Dick Smith championships that his team won,” St. Francis director of athletics Dave Laketa said. “His main concern was that the young women he recruited to the program were successful in the classroom and after they left St. Francis.”

Smith joined the St Francis family in 1981 after retiring as a special agent for the FBI, where he served for 21 years.

He received three personal commendations from J. Edgar Hoover for his domestic counter-intelligence work.

Earlier, he worked in Army intelligence, where he learned to speak Latin, Spanish, Russian, Polish and Japanese.

He had myriad stories, and he always enjoyed relating them. He was

VIEWS Dick Goss a close friend of former Herald-News sports editor and longtime local journalist Bob Drazkowski. Their meetings over breakfast and lunch tended to last for hours, with one great storyteller trying to outdo the other.

My meetings with Smith away from the diamond generally happened at USF sporting events. He supported all the Saints’ programs, and it was always fun to see him. He loved joking with you.

When Smith arrived at USF, it was as Ed Serdar’s assistant in the softball program. He took over has the head coach in 1985. St. Francis went 304-199 with three NAIA World Series appearances over the next 10 years, with the Saints finishing ninth twice and 13th once.

The author of two books on coaching softball, Smith left and became the head coach at Valaparaiso for two years, then returned to USF to serve as the assistant for his former player, Ali Franzen.

When Franzen left in 2002, he began his second 10-year stint as head coach. His team went 258-240 during that span.

But again, records were not all-important to Smith. His players loved him, they followed his lead and they are successful in life, thanks in no small part to their association with him.

That’s what he brought to St. Francis, a caring coach who joined the likes of Gordie Gillespie, Pat Sullivan and Tony Delgado in making USF sports programs a desirable destination for young athletes. The Saints’ family has lost a gem.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m.

Thursday at the Monee Funeral Home, 5450 W. Wilson St., Monee. A service is scheduled at 11 a.m. Friday at Monee Funeral Home with a 1 p.m burial at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

USF basketball update: While Saturday did not go the way the USF women’s and men’s basketball teams had planned, there may be a silver lining.

The women, ranked No. 4 in NAIA Division II at the time, lost to St Ambrose, 79-69, in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference semifinals, while the No. 1-ranked men fell to Robert Morris, 99-87, also in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference quarterfinals. Both games were at the Sullivan Center, where the Saints seldom lose.

However, both still will be going to

the NAIA National Tournament, and both got a few extra days to rest and practice because of not having to play in the CCAC title game. In the case of the women and CCAC Coach of the Year Samantha Quigley, that meant avoiding a third meeting with Olivet Nazarene, which plays at a pace that is exhausting merely to watch.

The men are nursing some bumps and bruises, and extra rest could not have come at a better time.

“They were probably quicker than us to begin with, and they were a little quicker to the ball than we were,” men’s coach Ryan Marks said of Robert Morris. “We are a little banged up, but you have to give them credit for playing with energy and resiliency,” The fields and matchups for the NAIA Division II national tournaments are scheduled to be announced Wednesday afternoon. It will be interesting to see where both Saints’ teams land on the bracket.

Last weekend notwithstanding, this has been a banner year for basketball at USF. Wouldn’t it be something if both teams can return from the national tournaments with the big prize?

Heat set franchise shooting record, roll past Bulls

MIAMI – Hassan Whiteside scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, Joe Johnson added 24 points in his Miami home debut and the Heat set a franchise record by shooting 67.5 percent on the way to rolling past the Bulls, 129-111, on Tuesday night.

Luol Deng scored 20, Dwyane Wade had 18 and Goran Dragic finished with 17 points and 11 assists for Miami. The previous Heat record for shooting percentage in a regular-season game was 63.4 percent Dec. 16, 2013 against Utah.

The Bulls were within 108-102 with 5:14 left, before Miami finished on a 21-9 run. No team had shot better in an NBA game this season than the 61.8 percent posted by San Antonio against Philadelphia on Dec. 7.

Jenkins and No. 3 Villanova romp over DePaul

VILLANOVA, Pa. – Kris Jenkins scored 14 straight points and a career-high 31 overall, leading No. 3 Villanova to an 83-62 romp over DePaul on Tuesday night and the outright Big East championship.

The Wildcats (26-4, 15-2) are Big East champs for the third straight season and had already clinched the top seed for the conference tournament next week in New York. The Wildcats won the tournament in 2015.

Jenkins scored 20 points by halftime and opened the second with consecutive 3s, topping his previous best of 23. The Wildcats shot 68 percent in the first half and proved they are still a force at any ranking.

The Wildcats slipped to No. 3 in the Top 25 after three weeks at No. 1. The Wildcats went 5-1 at No. 1 and lost last week at Xavier.

Slow is the way to go with Greek chicken dinner

This toothsome chicken dish makes its way into the world via a slow cooker, a kitchen device I’ve grown to love.

There are several reasons to like slow cookers, even beyond the wonderfulness of being able to toss ingredients into it, head to work and return to a fully cooked dinner in the evening.

Thanks to that long, low-temp cooking, slow cookers also are great at reducing tougher cuts of meat to tender goodness.

And because they are covered during cooking, moisture doesn’t escape and the food stays particularly moist.

The first time I prepared this Greek chicken dish, I hoped it would turn out to be one of those throw-the-ingredients-in-the-pot-and-walk-away-from-itwithout-a-care-in-the-world miracles.

Following the advice of several slow cooker cookbooks, I removed and discarded the chicken skin before cooking it. The theory was it would end up rubbery and add too much fat to the dish as it cooked. I also added the onions raw, the garlic smashed and the rosemary in stalks.

But that approach didn’t work out as planned. The finished dish was lackluster, and the chicken was dry.

So, back to the drawing board. This time, I browned the key components – chicken, onions and garlic – in a skillet before adding them to the slow cooker.

I also opted not to remove the skin from

the chicken and to dip the chicken in flour before sautéing it. I discarded most of the fat that came out of the skin as it browned, but kept some of it because fat is a conductor of flavor.

I reckoned these two steps would do double-duty: amp the flavor and protect the chicken from drying out.

It worked!

It’s worth noting, by the way, that the skin never became rubbery. It helped that it stuck up above the liquid as it cooked. Also, the chicken’s flour coating helped to lightly thicken the sauce. Of course, if you’re so inclined, you’re welcome to remove the skin just before serving; it will have already done its job.

In the end, the first and final versions of this recipe were as different as night and day. As ever, it’s all in the details.

Slow Cooker Greek Chicken

Start to finish: 51/2 hours (1 hour active) Servings: 6 1½ pounds Yukon gold potatoes, sliced 1/4 inch thick 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided Kosher salt 3 pounds bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs Ground black pepper 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 cup thinly sliced yellow onion 1 tablespoon minced garlic

1/4 cup dry white wine 1 cup chopped pepperoncini (Italian pickled peppers) 1 cup pitted Kalamata olives 1 whole lemon, cut into 8 wedges 2 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary 1/2 cup low-sodium chicken broth or stock In a large (6-quart) slow cooker, toss the potatoes with 1 tablespoon of the oil and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Season the chicken on all sides with salt and pepper.

In a large skillet over medium-high, heat the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil. Dip half the chicken in the flour, shaking off the excess, and add the pieces to the skillet, skin side down. Cook until nicely browned on both sides, 8 to 10 minutes.

Transfer the chicken to the slow cooker, placing it on top of the potatoes, skin side up. Repeat the process with the remaining chicken and flour.

Pour off all but 2 tablespoons of any fat left in the skillet, then return it to medium heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden, about 8 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Transfer the mixture to the slow cooker. Return the skillet to high heat and add the wine, stirring and scraping to deglaze the pan and loosen any stuck bits. Simmer until the wine is reduced by half, then add to the slow cooker.

Add the remaining ingredients, tucking them among the chicken thighs. Cover and cook on low for 4½ hours or high for 2½ hours. Transfer the chicken and potatoes to serving plates, making sure each portion includes olives, a lemon wedge and sauce.

Once this recipe is adapted for low and slow cooking, the flavors meld perfectly.

Nutrition information per serving: 780 calories; 490 calories from fat (63 percent of total calories); 54 g fat (12 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 190 mg cholesterol; 2440 mg sodium; 34 g carbohydrate; 3 g fiber; 2 g sugar; 36 g protein.

Information about Zika virus Dear Readers: Not surprisingly, we’ve been getting lots of letters about the Zika virus. In today’s column, I’d like to answer the questions many readers are asking.

• Where did Zika virus come from? Zika virus has been present for centuries in Africa. About 50 years ago, it spread to Asia. So far as we know, it arrived in the Americas (primarily Brazil) only last year. That means the vast majority of us in the Western Hemisphere have no immunity against it.

• How does it spread? The virus is carried by mosquitoes, primarily one called Aedes aegypti. They pick up the virus when they bite a person who is infected with it. They spread it to other people when they bite those people.

It is not clear if it can be spread directly from one person to another, as the influenza virus is spread when someone near you coughs, for example. There are a few cases in which the virus might have been spread by sex, but this appears to be very unusual.

• What is the danger from catching this virus? That depends on who you are. Most of us, even those of us in the Americas, don’t have any symptoms when we catch it. Some of us get aching joints, red eyes, fever and a rash, but it’s a mild, flu-like illness that typically lasts less than a week. Infection with the virus also infrequently may cause a nervous system disease in adults called Guillain-Barre.

But if you are a woman who is, might be or might soon become pregnant, there is reason to worry. There is strong evidence from Brazil when pregnant women catch the virus, there is a risk their babies will be born with birth defects.

aly – small heads and brains. (Several other infections also can cause this tragic complication of pregnancy.) Defects of vision and hearing also may occur.

• Can I be tested for this virus? Currently, only very specialized laboratories, such as those at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, can test accurately for the virus. Also, the tests are not perfectly accurate: They can both under-diagnose and over-diagnose the infection.

• Are there treatments for the virus? As of now, there are no treatments and no vaccines to prevent people from becoming infected. As you might expect, scientists all over the world are working to develop treatments and vaccines.

• Has the virus come to the United States and Canada? So far, there have been only a few cases of Zika virus infection among people in the U.S. and Canada, and they all caught the infection in a country south of the U.S. The virus would become a serious threat to the U.S. and Canada only if it was carried by mosquitoes in those countries. So far, that has not happened.

• What should I do to protect myself?

In tomorrow’s column, I’ll address that question. I’ll also talk about how we can better protect ourselves against other potential epidemics that might strike us.

Dear Abby: DEAR ABBY My fiancée and I have known each Jeanne other since high Phillips school. I was the “good kid” with honors and the right parents. She was considered trouble and didn’t have the best home life.

Rumor had it she moonlighted as a stripper our senior year, but I always blew it off as false.

Fast-forward 12 years: I ran into her recently, and we decided to have dinner. I fell in love with her on that date. A few months went by, and I mentioned the rumors. She wasn’t upset and matter-of-factly explained she did start stripping in high school and continued through college. It bothered me, but the benefits of being with her far outweighed the negatives.

Now that we are engaged, she told me she had to “come clean.” She said there were times in college when she had sex with some of her regular clients. I am floored. She basically admitted she had prostituted herself. I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to blame her for her past indiscretions, but this is a big deal. I don’t know how to let it go. That is apropos, with the caucuses coming thick and fast. In this deal, though, South needs to get across the table. How can he do it?

South is in four hearts, and the defenders begin with two rounds of clubs.

The South hand was a tad light for a two-club opening. But after East balanced with a takeout double, it was reasonable for South to jump to four hearts. Yes, if North were short in the majors, it would have backfired badly, but such pessimism almost never works at the bridge table.

East was tempted to double for a second time with his 18-pointer, but he was worried that if partner ran to, say, five diamonds, that would turn a plus score into a minus. (Note that five diamonds will go down one, but five clubs by East is unbeatable.

If East had doubled again, and West didn’t pass, he should have moved with four no-trump, which would have shown a two-suiter.)

South must hope that the spade finesse is working, so that he can collect these 10 tricks: five spades, four hearts and one diamond. But how can he get to the board to take the finesse? Only via the heart nine.

Declarer must be careful to ruff the second club high and to continue with a top trump.

Suppose East wins and leads another club. South ruffs high, cashes his last top trump, overtakes the heart eight with the nine, and runs the spade 10 to get home.

Then East will ruefully regret not passing out one spade!
