Dellwood Park Lockport The Chicago & Joliet Electric Railway Company began to build Dellwood Park in 1905 to increase the number of railway riders. For more than 30 years, Dellwood Park was one of the finest amusement, recreational and picnic areas in the region.

Located north of Joliet in Lockport, the park included a man-made lagoon, a waterfall, a boathouse, a dance hall that could accommodate 700 couples, grandstand for races, a merry-go-round, open-air theater, restaurant, a scenic railway ride, and other attractions that made the park a popular spot for thousands of annual visitors and society clubs from all over the area.

As many as 10,000 people came to Dellwood Park on summer weekends, day and evening, to enjoy the popular activities such as boating and dancing.

Walks along the paths led to other amusements, over bridges and along limestone bluffs. During the winter months, visitors would enjoy ice skating on the frozen lake.

The then photograph shows a view of the Dellwood Park boathouse, boating course and dam. The arched entryways shown near the base of the waterfall allowed visitors to traverse the length of the dam under the lake. The decorative globe lights on the landing in the center allowed visitors to see their way at night as they descended the stairway to the bottom of the dam.

The boathouse, shown on the left, burned down in the late 1930s. To the left and out of view in this photograph is the arched railroad bridge that was part of the interurban railway and local street car tracks, which brought visitors to the park each day. Seen in the far distance is the arch concrete bridge that many visitors walked over as they strolled through the park.

Gordie Gillespie died Saturday night after a long illness. He was 88.

A Chicago native who starred in college basketball for DePaul coach Ray Meyer, he arrived in Joliet in 1950 and in the 65 years since, brought the community to sports heights never imagined.

Whether it was coaching Joliet Catholic football, or Lewis basketball or baseball, or baseball, football or women’s basketball at St. Francis, it didn’t matter. Gillespie’s teams won, and his players ran through the wall for him.

They didn’t have to be asked.

total victories against 1,170 losses and eight ties in the three sports combined. That’s a .672 winning percentage.

His Lewis teams won three consecutive NAIA baseball championships in the mid-1970s. His Joliet Catholic football teams won four straight state titles from 1975 through 1978 and a fifth in 1981. His USF baseball team was the NAIA national champion in 1993.

“What Gordie’s teams did the middle and late ’70s has to be the greatest feat in the history of coaching,” said Mike Feminis, who played on

Gillespie’s first St. Francis football team in 1986, became an All-American linebacker, coached under Gillespie at USF for four years and now is the head coach at Saint Xavier.

“He will never be duplicated.”

‘He never wanted the glory’

Gillespie retired from college baseball coaching in 2010 as the winningest coach of all time. He had that record until University of Texas coach Augie Garrido surpassed it in 2014.

But even more remarkable than all the success, Gillespie coached college baseball for 59 years, including 10 years at Ripon in Wisconsin (where

Planning ahead Eighth-grade career fair for Grundy County students seeks businesses and industries

MORRIS – Eighth grade is not too soon for students to think about what they might like to do with their lives.

Whether they plan on college or a career right out of high school, classes must be planned, decisions regarding vocational training made and prerequisites for college considered.

With that in mind, the Community Foundation of Grundy County and the Grundy Area Vocational Center are hosting an Eighth Grade Career Fair in April and seek area businesses and industries that want to participate. The deadline for business participation responses is March 20.

“The idea is not only to get kids thinking about their careers, but also to expose them to what jobs are here in Grundy County. There are so many opportunities here for great jobs,” said Devan Gagliardo, the Community Foundation’s program director.

“Our students don’t necessarily know the opportunities available here in Grundy County,” GAVC Director Lance Copes said. “We hope to connect them with ideas for future employment so they can start tailoring their classes and thinking about internships. ... We have some fantastic kids here in Grundy

County, and we’re excited to have the opportunity to offer this for them.”

Copes said organizers hope to have 50 to 60 inside booths and outdoor tents available, filled with representatives from area businesses, trades and other professions. GAVC teachers will offer hands-on experiences involving welding, computer repair, criminal justice and more.

“It’s great to give students an opportunity to look at career opportunities at this age,” Copes said. “Eighth grade is a very formative year. It’s a good time to be exposed to career possibilities so they can think about it and go home and talk to mom and dad about it.”

GAVC used to offer an eighth-grade trades fair every year that was sponsored by local construction businesses, but the economic downturn severely affected the trades and the fair was

suspended.

This fair is similar, Copes said, in that it will be handson, but it will offer more than the construction trades.

The fair will run April 21 at the Morris Community High School District 101 Recreation Center. All exhibits will be interactive, Gagliardo said, and students can explore various career fields, ask questions and join in hands-on activities. Eleven Grundy County schools, with about 1,000 eighth-graders, already have signed on to participate.

“It’s not your normal expo,” Gagliardo said. “It’s very interactive.”

An example is the Grundy County Coroner’s Office, which will have a bone identification staging area. Several departments from Morris Hospital and Riverside Medical Center will attend with activities, and students will can shoot a fire engine’s water hose at a target, weather permitting.

“It’s never too early for students to begin thinking about careers,” Gagliardo said, “and to get somewhat of an idea what they want to do.”

Youngsters had an opportunity to get close to some of the animals presented by Dave DiNaso’s Traveling World of Reptiles on Saturday during Family Fest, which was presented by the Channahon-Minooka and Grundy County Chambers.

Family Fest offers something for everyone

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – Sitting for an acupuncture treatment was probably the last thing Morris resident Kelly Petry had on her mind when she attended Family Fest 2015 Saturday morning, but that’s exactly what she got.

“I didn’t even feel it,” she said as a tiny needle was placed in the right side of her neck.

Petry did feel a little pinch as an identical needle was positioned in the top of her left arm, but she said it wasn’t bad.

Three Wells Acupuncture Clinic, located in the Baum Building in Morris, was giving out free mini-acupuncture sessions at the event.

Family Fest was organized by the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Executive Director Caroline Portlock said the festival, held in the gymnasium of Minooka Community High School’s South Campus, is a consumer expo designed to show area residents services and products available in the community, while also giving kids something fun to do.

Boy Scouts were volunteering in full-force at the event, hosting a pancake breakfast, manning a booth and other activities. Three-year-old twins Evan and Elise Petrick of

Channahon were absorbed by Plainfield Boy Scout Troop 91’s Pinewood Derby race track.

They got to choose the cars to race and even got to push the button that released the little handmade vehicles down the track.

“They’re having a blast,” said their mother, Laura. “It’s nice to come out, especially since it’s so cold.”

Other recreational opportunities presented at the fair included Ellis House and Equestrian Center, Greater Joliet Area YMCA, Joliet Slammers Baseball and Downers Grove Sportsmen’s Club.

Several area businesses had booths as well, including ones devoted to cosmetics, banking, medical care, water systems, spa services, radio stations and newspapers.

The village of Channahon got in on the action, too, displaying maps of projects planned for neighborhoods and business areas.

The preliminary drawing depicted a widening of Dove Drive that could begin in the next couple of years. The work will include expansion on village right-of-way, thickening the road and the addition of city water lines, according to Channahon’s Director of Community Development, Mike Petrick.

Friends in Action help community, each other I’m always intrigued by some of the cool things students do at their schools, whether it’s jumping rope to raise money for the American Heart Association or competing on the state level in percussion band.

I’m sure there were some opportunities when I went to grade school – way back when – but certainly nothing like what exists now.

I recently learned about a program for fifth- through eighth-grade students who attend Channahon Junior High and Three Rivers School in Channahon. It’s a group called Friends in Action.

VIEWS Kris Stadalsky students a couple times a month after school. Friends in Action is a volunteer service-based club, but it’s much more than that.

Students get an opportunity to meet and socialize with other students they may not have had a chance to meet before. They end up widening their friendship circles and the time together gives them a sense of belonging at their schools.

“It’s really cool to see,” Hills said.

Sometimes students play games during club time.

They’ve gone to the movies and they plan service projects together.

For Thanksgiving, the group made thank you cards for veterans at the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans. Some of the students found touching ways to convey their sense of gratitude, such as using the letters of “thank you” to spell out other words – the H for hero, the O for courageous – for instance.

They helped with the district-wide holiday food drive for Chanooka Wish that went to help area families in need. They made flannel cutand-tie blankets for Project Linus, which go to children who need a special hug in homeless shelters, hospitals

and other places.

One of the games they play is on a website called Freerice.com. They answer questions in different educational categories and, for every right answer, the organization donates 10 grains of rice through the World Food Programme to help end worldwide hunger.

While 10 grains isn’t a lot, said Hills, when they accumulate 10,000 grains each during a game and add their grains together, they are doing something constructive with game time.

Next up on their list of service projects is a visit to Brookdale Senior Living in Joliet. Students made Valentine’s Day cards, which they intend to deliver, but they

also spend time with residents in both the memory care and assisted living quarters, where they visit and play bingo. They go prepared with a list of interview questions to help them connect with the seniors.

The service projects help students develop a sense of empathy for others and provides opportunities to socialize with people outside their usual circles.

“It really opens doors for them and teaches them to be a member of the community,” Hills said.

JOLIET –The third annual University of St. Francis Sister Clare Award will be given Thursday to activist and founder of Hadiya’s Promise, Cleopatra Cowley-Pendleton, for her work to end gun violence.

The Sister Clare Award, named for the university’s patron saint, is presented as part of the university’s celebration of Women’s History Month to recognize women of vision who “light the way” and make a positive impact in the community, according to a news release from USF. Former Homer Township man had determination and community spirit

Helen Berg Larry’s wife vened in 2008. Larry was 80 when he died Jan. 31.

In Oregon, Larry was president of the La Grande Lions Club from 2003 to 2004 and then oversaw 38 clubs as district governor for the Lions in Eastern Oregon in 2007 and 2008, Helen said.

Because his Lutheran faith was important to him, Larry also became an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in La Grande, Helen said.

And when Helen had initially balked at remarrying, Larry changed her mind with the same determination he once used for his education.

HOMER TOWNSHIP – Larry Berg, formerly of Joliet and Homer Township, did not do well in grade school and his father did not believe in education past the eighth grade.

But Larry, determined to attend Joliet Township High School, persuaded his father otherwise and worked hard to get good grades, with his parents giving him 25 cents a week for his lunch and bus, said Larry’s wife, Helen Berg of Oregon.

His determination paid off. Larry earned degrees from Joliet Junior College (pre-engineering), the former College of St. Francis in Joliet (bachelor’s in business) and Lewis University in Romeoville (master’s in business). He worked 40 years at Caterpillar Tractor as a hydraulics engineer.

That was after being drafted by the United States Army to serve during the Korean War, which also worked in Larry’s favor.

“They gave him a lot of schooling in mechanics, repairing cars and tanks,” Helen said. “When he came back, he signed up for Caterpillar’s two-year training and came up through the ranks.

He was quite the man, he really was.”

Helen said Larry’s job took him through all 50 United States, as well as Europe, Japan, Canada, Mexico and Asia. He wrote several small books on calculating the strength of materials, received more than 100 patents on equipment he designed, and served on the national committees of the National Fluid Power Society and the Society of Automotive Engineers, Helen said.

“When he retired, he was a consultant for other peo-

ple,” Helen said.

During this time, Larry had moved to Homer Township and became involved in the community, especially when it concerned education.

He served on the local school board for 21 years, 14 as its president.

“While he was on the school board, they built four new schools in the district,” Helen said. “He was really proud of that.”

When the Homer Township Lions Club was formed in the early 1970s, Larry became a charter member and helped the school district obtain equipment and supplies for children with special needs, Helen said.

Larry was devoted to the Lions because he believed in its mission of helping others, Helen said. But that was typical Larry, who also served as a Boy Scout leader for seven years. He had no pretense about him, she added.

“He was the kindest man I ever knew,” Helen said.

Helen married Larry in 1999, after his high school sweetheart Carol – whom he had married in 1954 – died from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. It was Helen that taught Larry to play, and Larry played as hard as he had worked.

At 62, Larry learned to downhill ski on Oregon’s slopes. He and Helen went whitewater rafting in places such as the River of No Return Wilderness in Idaho and Hell’s Canyon Wilderness in Oregon.

They picked up four grandchildren in various places in the United States and drove them to Walt Disney World in Florida. Larry even applied his engineering knowledge to the model ships he built.

“The success he had in all the sports is absolutely mind-boggling,” Feminis said.

“Sometimes I think I’m losing my mind just coaching football, then I think about what he did.”

Of course, for as long as his health allowed, Gillespie never really retired. In recent years, he helped his close friend, Dan Sharp, with the Joliet Catholic football program, mentoring the quarterbacks.

“Dad coached because he loved seeing kids succeed,” said Gordie Gillespie Jr., one of Gillespie’s seven children.

“What gave him the most fulfillment was being able to say, ‘Our guys succeeded.’ He never said, ‘My guys.’ He never wanted the glory.

“He had no regrets in life.

I’m sure he would say he wouldn’t change a thing. It’s sad, but now this is a time to celebrate his wonderful life.”

Gillespie was a member of the inaugural class of the Joliet Area Sports Hall of Fame. He has been inducted into 18 halls of fame and received numerous coach of the year, coach of the decade and coach of the century awards.

“The good Lord is building quite a team,” University of St. Francis Director of Athletics Dave Laketa said of Ernie Banks dying recently and Gillespie and Minnie Minoso dying over the weekend.

“He’s got Ernie and Minnie, and now he’s got his manager.”

Beyond the field

Yet as much as Gillespie accomplished as a coach, and as much as his legend grew

through the years, he was equally talented as a teacher, a public speaker and, most of all, a true friend and caring person.

“What stands out about Gordie is his unconditional love for all the players and coaches he ever came in contact with,” said Sharp, who said Gillespie always was a second father to him. “He truly cared for every other person.”

Bob Gillespie said three things stand out in what he loved about his dad.

“First, it wasn’t the number of wins,” he said. “It was all about the kids he coached.

Look at how many he coached became great coaches and great people.

“Second, it was never about him. He always wanted to know how he could help you.

“And third, playing the game right was paramount.

How you ran on and off the baseball field mattered. Doing it right was expected. Those things created that mystique.

You not only had to beat Joliet Catholic’s football team, you had to beat Gordie. And a lot of teams weren’t confident they could do that.”

Gillespie’s seven children through a previous marriage are Bob, Mike, Billie, Greg, Gordie Jr., Margaret Mary and Jackie. He and his widow, Joan, have 40 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren between them.

Like most families, the Gillespies scattered when they became adults. Gordie Jr., though, stayed in Joliet.

“I consider myself the most fortunate of all the kids,” he said. “I lived the pinnacle of dad’s career with him. I was there for every championship.

I was the biggest fan of every team he coached. I was the luckiest guy in the world.

“And on top of that, what a great father he was. He was the most sincere, caring and com-

Saturday, at the precise moment a basketball game at Milwaukee ended.

Mike Gillespie’s daughter, Kristen, coaches the Benedictine University women’s team, which was playing in the Northern Collegiate Athletics Conference championship game against Wisconsin Lutheran in Milwaukee. Mike and Gordie Jr. drove there to see the game.

“I looked at the clock when the game ended and it was 8:45,” Mike said. “I talked to Bob a little after that, and he said dad died at 8:45. So dad stayed until the end of that game. He couldn’t get the ‘W’ this time, but somehow, he was there.”

And others were there for Gillespie.

At the induction ceremony for Joliet Catholic’s first Hall of Champions class last September, Tom Thayer got up before the crowd, looked at Gillespie and said, “Gordie, we are all here for you.” That spoke volumes.

“I am most certain that today the Lord is telling coach Gillespie, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant,’ ” Laketa said.

Maybe he did need a baseball coach. And a football and basketball coach. He got the best,

all at once, perhaps the only person who ever coached 110 sports seasons at high levels, who always won more than his share and never quit caring for each of his players and assistants.

He is Joliet’s legend.

Vance was born in Joliet, grew up in New Lenox and lived in Manhattan for the past 30 years.

He graduated from Lincoln-Way High School, Class of 1971 and was a long time member of the Wilmington Moose Lodge #343 and the NRA. He has been the owner/operator of County Septic & Sewer for the past 38 years.

Vance love the outdoors, camping and fishing and had a particular liking for antiques.

Bette was born in Towanda, PA. on May 20, 1934. Bette was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, enlisting in 1952 where she met her future husband Edward B. Myslinski who

was also a veteran. She later adopted Ed’s 2 younger brothers, Joe and George Myslinski and together they raised the boys along with their daughter Gayle. Bette enjoyed sewing and taught sewing/quilting at several quilt shops. She also enjoyed reading and cooking. In her younger years, Bette worked in the offices of several different trucking companies while in later years she became a travel agent and enjoyed traveling to many countries and cities.

Committal services will be held at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 6001 W. 111th St. in Alsip, Wednesday, March 4th at 11:30 a.m.

Born: Jan. 1, 1966; in Joliet, IL Died: Feb. 26, 2015; in Joliet, IL Donald G. Noyd, age 49, passed away Thursday, February 26, 2015, at Joliet Area Community Hospice Home.

Born January 1, 1966, in Joliet, to the late Donald and Barbara (nee Flake), he was a lifelong Joliet resident. Don received his GED in 1999, and graduated from Joliet Junior College with an Associates Degree in Arts in 2002, and Lewis University with a Bachelor in Arts.

He worked for Gompers Junior High School as a Task Force teacher, and as a substitute teacher for Joliet District 86 and also Laraway School District. Don loved music, movies and was an avid race fan of all types of racing. He enjoyed teaching children, hiking, running and caring for animals, especially his feline companions, Emily and Bitty.

Surviving are his loving wife of 33 years, Bobbie (nee Davis) Noyd; his children, Sara (DeAngelo Adams) Noyd and Brett (Olivia Quigley) Noyd; and his grandson, DeAngelo Adams, Jr. Funeral Services for Donald G. Matilda A. Wilhelm (nee Razmo), of Joliet, passed on February 25, 2015.

Age 85.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Elmer F. Wilhelm.

She is survived by her sister, Victoria Magathan of Apple Valley, California.

Matilda was born at the Norwegian American Hospital in Chicago, October 12, 1929, to the late Anton and Lubica Razmo.

She attended the Don Humbolt Grade School and Tuley High School in Chicago. She received her BS Degree in Education at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, and her Masters at Roosevelt University. Matilda was a teacher/principal for 35 years in Elgin, Illinois and the rest of her career in Joliet, Illinois at Forest Park School and Culbertson School. She loved her students and they loved her, she was an excellent teacher.

Matilda volunteered at Silver Cross Hospital for 15 years,

in Same Day Surgery and the Discharge Lounge. She was very proud of her years of service at the Hospital. She also volunteered as an Election Judge for many years and was a Notary Public.

She was a member of the Audubon Society for 15 years; the Croation Cultural Club where she did Kolo Dancing; Delta Kappa Gamma - Retired teachers; order of the Eastern Star and the New Lenox Public Library where she and Elmer were members for many years. Elmer was president of the Library Board and helped with the planning and building of the library.

Matilda and Elmer were members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church for 57 years where she often served as lector.

Matilda and Elmer were inseparable traveling the world together.

They visited 63 different countries and took many trips with the Farm Bureau.

Before Elmer died he wrote this to Matilda: “This I will remember, When the rest of life is through: The finest thing I’ve ever done Is simply loving you” - Elmer Matilda was a very caring, Compassionate sister and everybody loved her. She will be truly missed.

A memorial service will be held at the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home, Thursday, March 5, at 6:00 p.m. Rev. Timothy Linstrom officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorials to Bethlehem Lutheran Church will be appreciated.

Earl Lloyd, 1st black player in NBA, dies at 86 The ASSOCIATED PRESS Earl Lloyd was a player and coach, an NBA champion and later a Hall of Famer.

Within the basketball world, he’s something much bigger.

He was a pioneer.

Lloyd, the first black player in NBA history, died Thursday at 86. West VirEarl Lloyd ginia State, his alma mater, confirmed the death but did not provide details.

“The NBA family has lost one of its patriarchs,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. “Earl Lloyd, the first African-American to play in an NBA game, was as inspirational as he was understated. He was known as a modest gentleman who played the game with skill, class and pride. His legacy survives in the league he helped integrate, and the entire NBA family will strive to always honor his memory.”

Lloyd made his NBA debut in 1950 for the Washington Capitols, just before black players Sweetwater Clifton and Chuck Cooper played their first games.

Lloyd helped the Syracuse Nationals win the 1955 NBA title, joining teammate Jim Tucker as the first black players to play on a championship team. Lloyd later became the first black assistant coach with the Detroit Pistons in 1968.

The National Basketball Retired Players Association said Lloyd “forever changed the game of basketball” on Halloween night in 1950. The organization hailed him as “a

Lloyd missed the 1951-52 season while in the Army.

The 6-foot-5 forward averaged 8.4 points and 6.4 rebounds in 560 regular-season games in nine seasons with Washington, Syracuse and Detroit. Inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003 as a contributor, Lloyd was 22-55 as Detroit’s coach in 1971-72 and the first nine games in the 1972-73 season.

“Our franchise will always remember the impact and contributions Earl made to the game of basketball and to the Detroit Pistons as a player, head coach and TV analyst,” the Pistons said.

Lloyd, a native of Alexandria, Virginia, lived in Crossville, Tennessee.

West Virginia State President Brian Hemphill called Lloyd a “trailblazer who was a true champion.”

“When Earl stepped out on the court on that fateful date in 1950, this remarkable man rightfully earned his place in the historic civil rights movement and, more important, he opened the door to equality in America.”

Illinois hunters, outdoorsmen hope for ally in Rauner

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois hunters and outdoors enthusiasts see Gov. Bruce Rauner as a potential new ally in Springfield as they eye legislation this session that includes measures to ban the use of drones to track wildlife, allow silencers at gun ranges, expand coyote hunting to crossbows and resurrect a bobcat hunting season.

They’re hoping Rauner, a hunter and fisherman who frequently touts his love of the outdoors, will bring a friendly perspective to natural resource issues and dozens of proposed new laws related to guns and hunting.

“I think he is sympathetic to the outdoors, being a hunter and a dog owner himself,” said George Fleischli, a registered lobbyist who represents outdoor recreation organizations.

At the same time, the sportsmen fear the state’s budget crisis will cast a cloud over the management of state parks and agencies that regulate their activities. They are banking on promises they say Rauner made to address problems at the Department of Natural Resources, encouraged by his appointment of former state Rep. Wayne Rosenthal, a fellow hunter and sportsman from Morrisonville, as the new DNR chief.

CHICAGO – Lady Gaga and Vince Vaughn made plunges into the icy waters of Lake Michigan at a fundraiser for the Special Olympics.

Special Olympics Chicago President Casey Hogan said Sunday that Gaga did the plunge with more than 4,500 other participants. Hogan said the singer’s appearance was “a very nice surprise.” Gaga recently announced her engagement to “Chicago Fire” actor Taylor Kinney. She and a bare-chested Kinney going into the water together.

Pipeline may carry crude oil through southern Illinois

CARBONDALE – A Texas-based company is converting an existing natural gas pipeline that runs through southern Illinois to transport crude oil.

Energy Transfer Partners spokeswoman Vicki Granado said the converted line would be part of a proposed new pipeline that could transport 450,000 barrels each day from oil fields in North Dakota.

She told The Southern Illinoisan in Carbondale the pipeline would not carry tar sands crude. That’s the Canadian product involved in the Keystone XL pipeline, a project President Barack Obama vetoed last week.

Teen charged with murder in Aurora shooting death

AURORA – A 16-year-old boy from Aurora has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with a fatal shooting.

The Aurora Beacon-News reported that authorities said the Friday shooting was gang-related. It left 17-year-old Gianni Aguirre dead. Police said the suspect and another teen approached Aguirre, exchanged words and then the suspect fired several shots with a handgun. Aguirre was struck once in the chest.

Aguirre was pronounced dead at an Aurora hospital. An autopsy is pending.

The Kane County state’s attorney filed the murder charges Saturday. The boy is in custody at the Kane County Youth Home.

The 16-year-old is charged as an adult. Police didn’t identify him pending a court hearing.

Kerry tries to dampen fuss over speech by Israeli PM

By BRADLEY KLAPPER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Secretary of State John Kerry tried Sunday to calm tensions with Israel before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s congressional address, yet insisted the Obama administration’s diplomatic record with Iran entitles the U.S. to “the benefit of the doubt” as negotiators work toward a longterm nuclear deal.

“We are going to test whether or not diplomacy can prevent this weapon from being created, so you don’t have to turn to additional measures including the possibility of a military confrontation,” Kerry told ABC’s “This Week.”

“Our hope is that diplomacy can work. And I believe, given our success of the interim agreement, we deserve the benefit of the doubt to find out whether or not we can get a similarly good agreement with respect to the future.”

Netanyahu will press his opposition to a diplomatic accommodation of Iran’s program in his speech Tues-

day to Congress. “We are not here to offend President Obama, whom we respect very much,” said a Netanyahu adviser, who was not authorized to be identified.

“The prime minister is here to warn, in front of any stage possible, the dangers” of the agreement that may be taking shape.

The adviser, who spoke shortly before the delegation touched down in Washington, said Israel was well aware of the details of the emerging nuclear deal and that they included Western compromises dangerous for Israel. Still, he tried to lower tensions by saying that Israel “does not oppose every deal” and merely was doing its best to warn the U.S. of the risks entailed in the current one.

The invitation to speak to Congress extended by House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Netanyahu’s acceptance have caused an uproar that has exposed tensions between Israel and the U.S., its most important ally.

30,000 marchers in Moscow mourn slain Putin political foe

By LAURA MILLS The Associated Press MOSCOW – For the tens of thousands bearing flowers and tying black ribbons to railings in honor of slain Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov, the solemn march through the Moscow drizzle on Sunday was a time for silence, not slogans.

The marchers occasionally broke into chants of “Russia without Putin,” or “Say no to war,” but often the only sound was the steady thwack of police helicopters overhead or the hum of police boats patrolling the shores of the Moscow River.

While the killing of Nemtsov has shaken the Russian opposition, which sees the Kremlin as responsible, it is unclear whether his death will be enough to invigorate the beleaguered movement. Despite the Ukraine conflict and Russia’s economic crisis, support for President Vladimir Putin has been above 80 percent in the past year.

Since mass anti-Putin protests brought hundreds of thousands to the streets of Moscow

in 2011 and 2012, Putin has marginalized and intimidated his political opponents, jailing some, driving others into exile, and ramping up fines and potential jail time for those detained at protests.

The 55-year-old Nemtsov was among the few prominent opposition figures who refused to be cowed. But while many at the march expressed respect for his long political career and grief at his loss, few believed that his death would spark major change in Russia because of the Kremlin’s control over national television, where a vast majority of Russians get their news.

“Maybe if 100 people were to die people would rise up, but I don’t really believe in that,” said Sergei Musakov, 22. “People are so under the influence of the [TV] box that they will believe anything that television tells them. If it tells them that terrorists from the Islamic State group came to Russia in order to blow up the fifth column, they’ll believe it.”

The Kremlin had identified Nemtsov as among the leaders of a “fifth column,” painting

him and other opposition figures as traitors in the service of a hostile West.

About 30,000 people attended the march, making it the largest opposition rally in more than a year. The demonstrators bore Russian flags and signs that read “I am not afraid” or “Propaganda kills.”

At the site where Nemtsov was killed, a pile of flowers grew by the minute, as mourners tossed down bouquets of every color.

Nemtsov was gunned down shortly before midnight Friday as he walked across a bridge near the Kremlin. The killing came just hours after a radio interview in which he denounced Putin’s “mad, aggressive policy” in Ukraine.

At the time of his death, Nemtsov was working on a report that he believed proved that Russian troops were fighting alongside the separatists in Ukraine, despite the official denials.

No one has been arrested in the killing. Investigators said they were looking into several possible motives and have offered nearly $50,000 for information about the shooting.

Survey: Parents increasingly ask doctors to delay vaccines

By LINDSEY TANNER The Associated Press CHICAGO – Parents have increasingly pressured doctors to delay vaccines for young children, making their kids and others vulnerable to preventable diseases, a study suggests.

The findings are in a national survey of pediatricians and family doctors asked about parents wanting to postpone some of the many shots recommended for children younger than age 2. Nearly all doctors said at least some parents had requested vaccine delays in a typical month; and one in four said those numbers had increased since the previous year.

THE STUDY

The researchers surveyed 534 doctors by email or regular mail in 2012. Participants were doctors who are members of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Family Physicians — the two leading groups of doctors who treat

young children. One in five doctors said at least 10 percent of parents had requested vaccine delays by spreading them out over more months than is recommended.

Most doctors said the practice puts kids at risk for getting vaccine-preventable diseases and might lead to disease outbreaks, but most also said they at least sometimes agreed to the delays. Only 3 percent said they often or always tell parents who insist on vaccine delays to seek care from another doctor.

THE CONCERNS

The potential repercussions are worrisome and are happening “right now with the measles outbreak,” said Dr. Allison Kempe, a University of Colorado researcher and a member of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s vaccine advisory committee.

More than 150 people in several states have been infected with measles, including infants too young to be vaccinated. Most cases are tied to an outbreak at Disneyland in California, which likely began with a traveler who brought it in, as has

been the case in other U.S. outbreaks. The exact source of the Disneyland-linked cases is not known.

Doctors are concerned about unvaccinated or under-vaccinated children becoming ill and spreading disease to others.

VACCINE RECOMMENDATIONS

Vaccinations against 14 diseases are recommended for children younger than 2, starting at birth and given every few months. Some shots combine vaccines against more than one disease; the measles shot also protects against mumps and German measles. Even so, young children may get five shots at once under the recommended vaccine schedule.

Some parents want to delay shots by spacing them out, partly to spare their kids from getting jabbed so many times at one sitting. Doctors surveyed said other reasons include worries about possible long-term complications and other risks from vaccines, which medical experts say are unfounded. The study didn’t ask doctors which vaccines parents asked to delay.

Crowd kills girl suspected of planning to become suicide bomber in Nigeria

By SHEHU SAULAWA THE Associated Press BAUCHI, Nigeria – A crowd beat to death a teenage girl accused of planning to be a suicide bomber and then set her body ablaze Sunday, according to police and witnesses at a northeastern Nigerian market.

A second suspect, also a teenage girl, was arrested at Muda Lawal, the biggest market in Bauchi city.

A spate of suicide bombings has been blamed on Nigeria’s home-grown Boko Haram Islamic extremist group, which wants to enforce strict Islamic law across Nigeria.

The group has threatened to disrupt Nigeria’s March 28

presidential and legislative elections, saying democracy is a corrupt Western concept.

In Bauchi, the two girls aroused suspicion by refusing to be searched when they arrived at the gate to the vegetable market, said yam vendor Mohd Adamu. People overpowered one girl and discovered she had two bottles strapped to her body, he said.

They clubbed her to death, put a tire doused in fuel over her head and set it on fire, he said.

It seems doubtful the girl was actually a bomber as she did not detonate any explosives when she was attacked, said Police Deputy Superintendent Mohammad Haruna.

He described her as the victim of “mob action carried out by

an irate crowd.”

Recently some girls as young as 10 years old have been used to carry explosives that detonated in busy markets and bus stations, raising fears that Boko Haram may be using some of its hundreds of kidnap victims in bomb attacks.

It’s unclear whether such girls detonate explosives themselves or whether the bombs are controlled remotely.

President Goodluck Jonathan last week condemned the Boko Haram insurgents for choosing soft targets and said the series of bombings are a response to the Nigerian military’s recent success in seizing back a score of towns that had been in the hands of the extremists for months.

Close friends marvel at Gordie’s greatness Gordie’s accomplishments

“It’s always been a wonder – how did Gordie become Gordie?” said the former University of St. Francis basketball coach, athletic director and athletic chairman. “That sort of greatness, you can’t definite it, but you know it when you see it.”

Gillespie, the local coaching legend, died Saturday night at age 88. Joliet will be without the man who was so hugely successful in his approach to athletics and, more importantly, relating to people.

What exactly did Gillespie see in the athletes he recruited to Lewis and St. Francis, and attended Joliet Catholic, for among other reasons, to play football for him? Fifty-plus years later, Tony Delgado and Tom Kennedy don’t have the answer.

“It was my good fortune that I was playing basketball for Harrison Tech in Chicago against Crane Tech,” Delgado recalled. “We lost, 99-50, and Gordie [who was coaching Lewis at the time] was there watching.

“I’m a 5-9 guard who couldn’t shoot, and nobody else talked to me. But he invited me to a tryout, and I made the team. He saw something that, for whatever reason, he thought could be developed.”

Kennedy grew up in Braidwood, attended St. Rose School in Wilmington, attended Joliet Catholic never having played basketball.

“I played baseball the last two years of high school because my mom and dad got me a car,” Kennedy said. “Leroy Leslie was my baseball coach.

“I went to Lewis and got hooked up with a park district basketball team with Snake Serdar. Yes, I was learning to play basketball according to Snake. I was playing intramurals at Lewis, and two guys on the team went on academic probation. Gordie asked me to play basketball. I could jump and shoot, but I was green.

“I was a baseball player, but I said I would do it, and Gordie

It was Gillespie’s greatness, his ability to make his players believe they were better than even they thought they were.

“He was the greatest motivator and psychologist who ever coached,” said Saint Xavier coach Mike Feminis, who played on the first USF football team in 1986, when Gillespie began the program. “He got us to play at a level none of us ever thought we could.

“In ’86, we got together three weeks before our first game. We’re winning, and we didn’t even know each other yet. We’re beating teams and competing with teams we had no business being on the field with.

“I know for me, Gordie absolutely gave me the confidence when I stepped on the field that I could be Superman.

Gordie Gillespie arrived in Joliet in 1950 and brought this community to amazing sports heights. Here are just some of his accomplishments.

Q Sixteen National Finalists in the NAIA World Series: 1962 - 3rd Place; 1963 - 5th Place; 1966 - 2nd Place; 1971 - 3rd Place; 1972 - 5th Place; 1974 - Championship; 1975 - Championship; 1976 - Championship; 1978 - 5th Place; 1983 - 6th Place; 1985 - 3rd Place; 1986 - 8th Place; 1989 - 2nd Place; 1990 - 3rd Place; 1993 Championship; 1995 - 5th Place.

Q Gillespie’s overall record in baseball was 1,893-952. He became college baseball’s all-time winningest coach on April 24, 1993 with a 13-3 decision over McKendree College. That victory, his 1,333rd, surpassed former USC head coach Rod Dedeaux, who posted a 1,332571 mark in 45 seasons.

Q His teams won Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships 24 times.

Q At Ripon, he compiled a 239-130 record in 10 seasons, highlighted by a 33-9 mark in 2001. In 1999, he led the program to its first-ever NCAA III national tournament appearance.

Q In his 10 seasons at Ripon, he led the Red Hawks to the NCAA III playoffs six of the last seven years and captured five Midwest Conference titles, including one stretch of four in a row. He has also been named the Midwest Conference Coach of the Year four times (1999, 2001, 2002 and 2003).

Q He was selected NAIA Coach of the Year four times.

Q He was inducted into seventeen (17) Halls of Fame.

Q He was a three-time president of the NAIA Baseball Coaches Association.

Q He served on the 1969 United States Olympic Baseball Committee and was chosen as a coach for the U.S. team at the Pan American Games at Cali, Colombia, South America in 1970.

Q Fifty-seven of his players signed professional baseball contracts, including Ripon College’s first-ever in 1998.

Q In his final 10 years at Joliet Catholic High School, his varsity football teams won five state championships (1975-1976-1977-1978-

The season started my sophomore year and I was splitting time. I got my first start in January that year against McKendree and went 10 for 13 from the field and 12 for 13 from the line and was a starter from then on.”

A couple years later, he was drafted by the Chicago Zephyrs, soon to be in the NBA. “I’m not sure what they were smoking,” Kennedy laughed of being their 13th-round draft pick.

WHAT GORDIE SAW

Delgado and Kennedy became Gillespie’s close friends and associates for life. He saw something in people, from an athletic standpoint and otherwise, that others missed.

“In my case, Gordie created something out of almost nothing and changed my whole life,” Kennedy said. “Even during my 27 years at Regis [in Denver], I called on Gordie every day. I’d always stop and say, ‘Now what would Gordie do?’”

There’s that Gillespie greatness Sullivan spoke of. You can’t define it, but you know it when you see it.

Sullivan related a story that longtime baseball coach John Morrey told about Gillespie.

“John was at the Na tional Baseball Convention when Gordie spoke and got a standing ovation,” Sullivan said. “He didn’t hear another standing ovation there until four years later, when Gordie spoke again.”

Gillespie coached 110 sports seasons for 59 years. He coached basketball, baseball and football and was a smashing success in all three.

“Gordie was giving a talk at a coaches’ convention, and I was observing,” Kennedy said.

“The hair stood up on the back of my neck when he said, ‘If you don’t like kids, get out. It’s not about you – it’s about the kids.’

“That’s what made him so different, in addition to being a coach, literally, for all seasons.

He taught humility in way I didn’t catch on to in the early years.”

Sullivan has worked basketball clinics with the likes of John Wooden, Bobby Knight and Dean Smith, and respects them for the coaches they were. But to him, they were not Gillespie.

“There is nobody like him,” Sullivan said. “Guys like Wooden, Knight and Dean Smith were great coaches. But we’ve got the best. I’ll go my grave saying that.

“Like in ‘The Natural,’ when Gordie walked down the sidewalk, you could hear someone say, ‘There goes Gordie Gillespie. He was the best there ever was.’ Who else ever heard of a coach in three sports on the college level?

Who else could coach 110 seasons and along the way be as successful as he was?”

For the game, Lewis shot 53.3 percent from the floor, while UIS made good on only 34.5 percent of its shots. The Flyers owned a 40-27 rebounding advantage and outscored the Prairie Stars, 30-8, in the paint.

“I think that we did what we had to do against the most-improved team in our league with the way that they were playing at the end in the year,” Flyers coach Scott Trost said. “They played us tough there, lost to Parkside in overtime and won at McKendree. They present some problems by going with some small lineups, but we handled that pretty well.

“I thought that Jeff and Julian were phenomenal and thought that was Julian’s best game of the year. We’ve shown that we can beat anybody when we come ready to play, and I know our guys are excited.”

ROMEOVILLE – By most standards, Julian Lewis had enjoyed a successful career at Lewis University as he prepared for his final game at Neil Carey Arena on Sunday.

But the Flyers senior forward saved one of his best efforts for last, collecting gamehigh totals of 18 points and 13 rebounds to help Lewis to a 7052 victory over Illinois Springfield in a first-round game the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament.

The 13 boards were a season-best for the team, while the 18 points were a season-high for Lewis – who also hit the 1,000-point mark for his career early in the second half to become one of just four Flyers in the Division II era to collect 1,000 points and 700 rebounds.

“This is really a great accomplishment, especially to do

it on my home floor in my last home game,” Lewis said. “I couldn’t have done it without these guys who I’ve been playing with for four years. I love playing with each and every one of these guys.

“We definitely got off to a great start, offensively and defensively. We held some of their top guys to lower than their averages. It’s great to bounce back from our loss at Parkside, which is one of our big rivals. To beat a team like this is great going into the tournament.”

Lewis (21-7), which had won eight straight games before falling at Wisconsin-Parkside on Thursday, advances to its ninth-straight GLVC quarterfinals. It will face No. 16 Indianapolis on Thursday in St. Charles, Missouri.

Jimmie Johnson pulls away for another Atlanta win

By PAUL NEWBERRY The Associated Press HAMPTON, Ga. – Likely locking up a run at his record-tying seventh championship before it even turns to spring, Jimmie Johnson pulled away after the final restart with 13 laps to go Sunday, winning the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Johnson started near the back after failing to get in a qualifying run because of inspection issues. But the No. 48 Chevrolet was the fastest car on the track at the end of the weekend, cruising across the finish line a comfortable 1.803 seconds ahead of Kevin Harvick.

It was the 71st victory of Johnson’s career and his fourth at the 1.54-mile trioval

south of Atlanta. It also gives him an almost-certain spot in the season-ending Chase, going for a title that would tie him with Richard Petty and the late Dale Earnhardt.

“It’s pretty much a lock,” Johnson said. “That takes a ton of pressure off.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr. was third, followed by Daytona 500 winner Joey Logano, who started from the pole and led 84 laps early in the race.

After a big crash on lap 305 brought out the red flag for nine minutes to clean up the mess, Johnson found himself at the front of the pack. When the green flag waved, he got a good jump off the line, fended off Hendrick Motorsports teammate Earnhardt going down the backstretch, and was firmly in control by the time the cars came back around in

There was no catching him from there.

Johnson was among four former champions, along with teammate Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and Matt Kenseth, who never got on the track

during qualifying. Thirteen cars were stuck in the garage after failing to pass inspection, a situation that Gordon called “embarrassing” for the sport.

Harvick, who qualified on the outside of the front row, also was sent to the back of the field after blowing an engine during Saturday’s practice.

He quickly worked his way through slower cars, got to the front and dominated long stretches of the race, leading a race-high 116 laps.

For much of the day, it was clean race despite a new rules package for non-restrictor plate races, which reduced horsepower and drag while giving drivers a device to adjust the car’s balance during the race.

The first big crash came on lap 258, taking out Gordon, Denny Hamlin and Jamie Mc-

Murray. Then, on lap 305, Greg Biffle clipped Joe Nemechek going into the third turn, gobbling up four other cars and bringing out the red flag.

Hamlin started a four-car melee when he got sideways coming out of turn two off a restart. Gordon took the biggest blow, sliding off the inside of the track and smashing into an exposed inside wall – just beyond a SAFER barrier that would’ve eased the blow.

Track officials had increased the amount of padding in Atlanta after Kyle Busch smashed headfirst into an unprotected wall during an Xfinity Series race in Daytona, leaving him with a broken right leg and left foot. Busch missed his second straight Cup race, recovering at home while substitute David Ragan finished 18th in the No. 18 car, two laps down.

Minoso, a Havana native who spent most of his career in left field, is one of only two players to appear in a major league game in five different decades. He got his final hit in 1976 at age 53 and went 0 for 2 in two games in 1980 for the White Sox, who hired him as a team ambassador after his playing career and repeatedly lobbied

CHICAGO – When Minnie Minoso broke into major league baseball, the “Cuban Comet” was part of a wave of black players who changed the game forever. By the time he played in his final game 35 years ago, he was a beloved figure with the White Sox. It was one amazing ride for the seemingly ageless slugger, who died early Sunday morning after helping clear the way for generations of minority ballplayers, including a long list of stars from his home country.

“I know we’re all going to go at some time, but I had gotten to the point where I really thought Minnie was going to live forever,” Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf said. “There has never been a better ambassador for the game or for the White Sox than Minnie.”

Minoso, who made his major league debut just two years after Jackie Robinson and turned into the game’s first black Latino star, died of natural causes, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

There is some question about Minoso’s age, but the medical examiner’s office and the Sox said he was 90.

Minoso’s death comes on the heels of the loss of Cubs great Ernie Banks, who passed away Jan. 23 at age 83.

“For Minnie, every day was a reason to smile, and he would want us all to remember him that way, smiling at a ballgame,” Minoso’s family said in a statement released by the team. “As he so often said, ‘God Bless you, my friends.’”

Minoso played 12 of his 17 seasons in Chicago, hitting .304 with 135 homers and 808 RBIs for the Sox. The Sox retired his No. 9 in 1983, and there is a statue of Minoso at U.S. Cellular Field.

For Minoso’s many admirers, his absence from the Hall of Fame remains a sore spot.

President Barack Obama, a longtime Sox fan, praised Minoso for his speed, power and “resilient optimism” while helping integrate baseball in the 1950s.

“Minnie may have been

“I think that everybody has to respect his legacy because he did so much for the Latin players, for the Cubans, for everybody – because when he arrived here, it was a tough time because of racism and discrimination,” said Sox shortstop Alexei Ramirez, another Cuban star. “He wrote a huge legacy for all of us.”

Saturnino Orestes Armas Minoso Arrieta was selected for nine All-Star games and won three Gold Gloves in left. He was hit by a pitch 192 times, ninth on baseball’s career list, and finished in the top four in AL MVP voting four times.

Despite the push by the Sox and other prominent Latin players, Minoso never has come close to making it to the Hall. His highest percentage during his 15 years on the writers’ ballot was 21.1 in 1988. He was considered by the Veterans Committee in 2014 and fell short of the required percentage for induction.

“My last dream is to be in Cooperstown, to be with those guys,” Minoso said in an informational package produced by the team for a 2011 Cooperstown push. “I want to be there.

This is my life’s dream.”

Minoso, who made his major league debut with Cleveland in 1949, hit .298 for his career with 186 homers and 1,023 RBIs. The speedy Minoso also led the AL in triples and steals three times in each category.

Playing in an era dominated by the Yankees, he never played in the postseason.

“He gave you 100 percent at all times,” former teammate Billy Pierce said. “You have to rate him with the better ballplayers of all time.”

Minoso finished that first season in Chicago with a .326 batting average, 10 homers and 76 RBIs in 146 games for the Indians and Sox. He also had a major league-best 14 triples and an AL-best 31 steals.

It was Minoso’s first of eight seasons with at least a .300 batting average. He also had four seasons with at least 100 RBIs. “I have baseball in my blood,” Minoso said. “Baseball is all I’ve ever wanted to do.”

Chris Paul, DeAndre Jordan lead Clippers past ailing Bulls The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – DeAndre Jordan’s rebounding was too much for the short-handed Bulls.

Jordan continued his recent tear with 26 rebounds and Chris Paul had 28 points 12 assists as the Clippers earned a 96-86 victory Sunday over the Bulls.

Jordan had 17 rebounds in the first two periods, the most by an NBA player in one half this season.

In his 300th straight game, the longest active streak in the league, the league’s top rebounder also blocked two shots and altered several more.

“You look at the stat sheet, you don’t see how many times (an opponent) didn’t drive because D.J. was there, how many guys went up but didn’t shoot because he was there,” Paul said. “He should be considered for MVP, but that’s how the league works. It’s an offensive league.”

“What he’s doing defensively, if he was doing that offensively, he would be recognized as the MVP or one of them,” coach Doc Rivers said.

“But because it’s defensively, no one notices.”

Well, almost no one.

Jordan had at least 15 rebounds in his eighth straight game.

“I agree because I’m a big guy, but others don’t. Our league is about points, obviously,” he said.

Los Angeles was behind, 76-75, when Jamal Crawford made a 3-pointer with 8:02 left.

“Without Derrick, Pau and Jimmy, somebody needed to shoot the ball,” Mirotic said.

“My teammates were trying to find me. I took some tough shots.”

Los Angeles jumped to a 26-18 lead in the first quarter in which Paul scored eight points and Jordan grabbed nine rebounds. But with Paul on the bench at the start of the second period, the Bulls went on a 12-2 run to go up, 30-28.

Mirotic scored eight of his 11 points in the quarter.

Vannevar Bush, an engineer who, inter alia, founded Raytheon, said, “If scientific reasoning were limited to the logical processes of arithmetic, we should not get very far in our understanding of the physical world.

One might as well attempt to grasp the game of poker entirely by the use of the mathematics of probability.” Or bridge.

Experts remember the bridge odds that arise on a regular basis. Knowledge of two of the more common ones would have helped declarer in this deal.

How should South have planned the play in four spades? West led the heart queen. East overtook with his king and shifted to a trump.

South started with nine top tricks: six spades, one diamond and two clubs. His first thought was to ruff his third heart in the dummy, but East’s defense had killed that plan.

Declarer’s second idea did not work either. He drew trumps, played a club to dummy’s ace, and returned a club to his jack. However, the finesse lost, and the defenders cashed two more heart tricks to defeat the contract.

The winning line was to duck (lose) a club at trick three. Now the defenders would have been powerless. They could not have done better than to cash a second heart trick and play another trump. But then South would have drawn trumps, cashed his club king (the honor from the shorter side first), overtaken the club jack with dummy’s ace, and discarded his last heart on the club six.

This line requires a 3-2 club break, which is 67.8 percent a priori, much better than a 50 percent finesse. The mathematics have spoken.

• Normal-pressure hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus occurs when too much cerebrospinal fluid collects around the brain. This condition affects a small number of older people.

In addition to dementia, people with this condition often lose bladder control and walk in a slow, hesitant manner, as if their feet are stuck to the floor.

A surgically implanted tube (shunt) that drains this excess fluid from the brain often brings rapid improvement.

• Subdural hematomas.

Hematomas are blood clots caused by bruising.

Older people sometimes develop them in the brain after even a minor head injury. As blood oozes into a closed space, the hematoma gets bigger and begins to interfere with brain function.

• Thyroid disease. Both an underactive thyroid and an overactive thyroid can cause the symptoms seen in dementia. In the former, the thyroid gland in the body produces too little thyroid hormone.

In the latter, it makes too much. Both conditions can be effectively treated.

In all of these cases, the chances of successfully reversing dementia are better the earlier treatment is started. That’s why it is important to tell your doctor about any signs of dementia as early as possible. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking “I’d rather get bad news later, rather than sooner.” For some people with symptoms of dementia, prompt diagnosis and treatment can convert bad news into good news.

Dear Doctor K: My mother has started showing signs of dementia. Will it be all downhill from here? Or can dementia ever be treated or reversed?

Dear Reader: There are many different causes of dementia. We can’t do much to slow or reverse some of them, but we can reverse and even cure others. Dementia is a catchall term. It covers a variety of illnesses that cause memory loss, confusion, changes in personality and declining ability to perform everyday activities.

The most common type of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease. Another common dementia, vascular dementia, is caused by insufficient blood flow to the brain. Once these types of dementia develop, treatment options are limited.

Drugs for Alzheimer’s are sometimes used for vascular dementia. However, for both diseases, drugs offer only temporary and modest protection at best.

However, in a small percentage of cases, dementia may be reversed. The following conditions might cause reversible dementia: • Toxic reactions to drugs. With aging, the liver and kidneys become less efficient at detoxifying medicines and eliminating them from the body.

As a result, drugs tend to build up in the body.

Older people in poor health and those taking several different medications are especially vulnerable to dementia caused by drugs.

Reducing the dose of medicines can sometimes produce dramatic improvement.

• Vitamin B12 deficiency. Nerve cells need vitamin B12 to work. Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause the symptoms of dementia.

Vitamin B12 is plentiful in eggs, dairy, meat, fish and poultry. However, with age, people become less efficient at absorbing it from food into the bloodstream.

Dear Abby: My motherin-law is now in a nursing home. When my husband’s birthday came around, he was depressed by the fact that it was the first time in his life he hadn’t gotten a birthday card from her.

So, after struggling to think of a Christmas present for her, I went to the dollar store and bought four Christmas cards and four birthday cards (one for each of her children). I took them to her and had her sign and add a personal note to each one.

I addressed, stamped and mailed the Christmas cards.
