JOLIET – The Rialto Marquee Advisory Committee on Wednesday worked on ways to make a new marquee look as much as possible as the old one.

The committee also heard from one of its co-chairs that Landmark Sign Group, the company that has done most of the work on a marquee now in storage, may want out of the project, which was stopped in mid-construction amid public objections to the look of the sign.

The committee, formed to help solve the Rialto Square Theatre marquee problem, did reach an agreement that modern LED lighting is acceptable.

“It appears that everyone sitting up here doesn’t have a problem modernizing to LED panels,” committee member

Jeff Hettrick said at one point.

“We’ve made our first consensus agreement from the looks of it.”

Committee member Michael Morgan, also a member of the Rialto Belongs to the People group that led opposition to the new marquee, presented a conceptual image of how the existing marquee would look with minimal alterations to accommodate LED panels and changing screen images.

“Our first goal is we need to keep the original look of the theater,” Morgan said later. “I don’t know how we’re going to arrive there yet.”

Morgan’s proposed design was well received, but some members expressed concern about what would be done with the unfinished marquee, which has already cost the Rialto $197,000.

“This looks nice,” said

member Michael Turk, also a Joliet city councilman. “But with the existing sign 70 percent done, can that be adapted to this.”

Committee Co-Chair Chris Clott said the cost of modifying the existing Rialto marquee for LED panels would be about $40,000. He also said the total cost of completing the marquee in mid-production and installing it would be $236,000.

Clott, who visited Landmark Sign Group in Indiana and showed photos of the sign in pieces and in storage, said he was told that “surgery” could be done to modify the marquee in mid-production so it looks more like the marquee already in place, but it would be difficult.

“One of their thoughts is to deliver the LED units and be done with it,” Clott said.

Romeoville makes one-year sponsorship deal with Comcast

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Another portable basketball court at the Edward Hospital Athletic and Events Center will bear the name of a business after Romeoville trustees approved a sponsorship deal with Comcast Wednesday night.

The one-year deal gives Comcast the right to add an “xfinity” logo on the court for a $20,000 fee. It also allows Comcast use of lobby space in connection with up to six events at the center.

“We’ve had a lot of success in bringing in naming rights and other deals,” Mayor John Noak said. “It adds more activity to the center and brings more attention to it.”

The deal is the second sponsorship agreement with the center.

The village in January agreed to a sponsorship deal with Naperville-based Edward Hospital. That five-year deal gave the hospital naming rights to the facility, rights to a 1,660-square-foot space and sponsorship rights to one of the

portable basketball courts.

A sign with the new name for the center is expected to be installed late this week, Assistant Village Manager Dawn Caldwell said.

The Comcast deal gives the company the right to say it’s a sponsor for the center, and the village must include it as a sponsor in advertisements and promotions.

The village is required to install the logo on the court and remove it if the agreement expires without a new contract or renewal. Caldwell said quotes suggest installation would cost $1,150 and removal would cost $2,500.

Trustee Sue Micklevitz asked why the deal was only for one year.

“Generally we want to have five-year contracts,” she said.

Caldwell said five-year agreements are preferable, but the $20,000 price for one year was still a pretty good deal.

Trustees also approved these items Wednesday: • Streamlined the village’s video gaming ordinances to reflect state law by removing a requirement making a video

game area physically separate from the rest of the facility • Amended the fencing ordinance to allow areas like Commonwealth Edison, Citgo and airport installations to use palisade fencing instead of barbed wire to comply with state and federal law • Allow parking on the west side of Spangler Avenue between Alexander Circle and Elgin Lane • Allow Class H liquor license holders to serve alcoholic beverages in connection with events conducted, sponsored or promoted by the village at Deer Crossing Park Pavilion, Nancy Aldridge Memorial Pavilion and Edward Hospital Athletic and Event Center • $36,000 purchase of 35 non-lethal stun guns to assign a taser to every police officer and replace older ones in the future • Agreement of a settlement with the Citgo refinery regarding property value assessment • Background check services for part-time fire academy instructors • Updated agreement with the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System

But Dan Vera, a committee member who also is vice chair of the Rialto board, said he was in a recent meeting with a sales representative from Landmark who did not say anything about the company wanting to be done with the project.

“First I heard,” Vera said when asked about Clott’s comment.

The committee discussed making the marquee in mid-construction smaller, toning down its color and even taking panels with the words “Rialto Square Theatre” and placing them in the back of the building instead of on the marquee.

The committee also changed the date of its next and last meeting, previously scheduled for April 1, to April 13.

Students learn a trade before graduating

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Joseph Alexander has yet to leave high school, but through his work as a welder at Wilco Area Career Center, he’s building a potential career as an aircraft mechanic.

Alexander, a Marquette Manor Baptist Academy senior, is one of more than 1,000 students from Will and Cook counties learning a trade at the Romeoville-based career center. The knowledge students gain can be applied toward a future vocational or college career.

Alexander said he’s the only student at his school attending the center. The rest are concerned with college.

“I guess the big push nowadays is you have to go to college, but this is a great place for just learning a trade,” he said. “I think if a lot of kids knew more about Wilco, they would be interested. It’s just the lack of people or lack of knowledge.”

Wilco Area Career Center offers career and technical education to high school students from schools in Plainfield, Bolingbrook, Lemont, Romeoville and Wilmington.

Students also can earn college credit with dual enrollment to Joliet Junior College or College of DuPage.

The center prepares students to enter the labor market and meet the needs of neighboring businesses and industries. The center is a cooperative school district with services shared by schools in the Will and Cook counties area.

“My teacher was telling us that welding is a continuously growing field,” said Alexander, who plans to attend Joliet Junior College and then Lewis

University. “A lot of welders we have now are older and retiring. We have a big push for younger welders that are getting that experience.”

Welding is one of the programs with the highest enroll-

ment at Wilco for the 2015-16 year, with 50 students. Other programs with high enrollment include auto service, criminal justice and health science, which has 147 students.

The two GMC vans now have identifying “wraps” to advertise the center’s mission and programs. The center serves the city’s impoverished northeast side.

Each van can take 11 students to after-school programs and children’s events, but the seats also can come out to pick up donations for the center’s food bank, Director Bettye Gavin said.

After a neighborhood violence meeting two years ago, Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow approached then-Joliet Police Chief Mike Trafton about using drug asset seizure money to buy a vehicle for the center.

State’s attorney employees

will volunteer as tutors at the center beginning next school year, in partnership with Joliet Township High Schools.

“That will allow us to extend after-school hours to 6 or 6:30 p.m.,” Gavin said.

“If these young people get homework done, they aren’t falling behind,” added Glasgow, who expects measured results will make the program eligible for federal grants.

About 20 middle school and

junior high students participate in educational programs at the center each day, Gavin said. There also is an early learning center to prepare 3to 5-year-olds for kindergarten.

The center distributed more than 20,000 pounds of food to residents last year and also has started a community garden.

The center has 13 computers for use by students and community members and is operating a “Dress for Success” program, where people seeking work receive donated business attire and undergo mock interviews.

“We have a staff of seven, including myself, and over 100 volunteers. People right here in this community who will help whenever I call on the phone. We couldn’t do anything without that support,” Gavin said.

“This place is a jewel on The Hill,’’ Glasgow agreed.

Taxing bodies consider Lemont refinery settlement

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – More than a dozen Will County taxing bodies are considering a proposed settlement agreement with a Lemont petroleum refinery over a property value assessment dispute.

Since 2010, Citgo Lemont Refinery disputed the assessment of its property by the Will County Assessor’s Office and filed an appeal, Will County Chief Assessment Officer Rhonda Novak said. Citgo disputed the $270 million assessment of its property between 2010 and 2014, she said.

Citgo was part of two Will County tax rate objection complaints against several taxing bodies filed in 2011 and 2013. According to the 2013

complaint, Citgo, along with hundreds of other companies, objected to Will County levies from townships, park districts, libraries and schools.

Now some of those taxing bodies are considering a proposed agreement with Citgo that lays out the aggregate equalized assessed value of Citgo property between 2014 and 2018.

The agreement also calls for the dismissal of litigation between Citgo and some of those taxing bodies.

“This is a good thing for the county,” said Nick Palmer, chief of staff for Will County Executive Larry Walsh. “This is a win for the county. We’re getting a settlement agreement that’s going to bring in tax dollars. … Anytime we reach a settlement through negoti-

ations, rather than through a fight, is a good thing.”

Pete Colarelli, Citgo government and public affairs manager, said Citgo was aware of the proposed agreement but declined to comment until negotiations are complete.

On Monday, the Lockport Township High School Board unanimously approved the agreement. The agreement also calls for approval from Will County, Joliet Junior College, the Village of Romeoville, DuPage Township and others.

“This is an opportunity to bring stability,” said Todd Wernet, Lockport Township High School superintendent.

The Will County Board is set to vote on the agreement at its regularly scheduled meeting Thursday morning.

According to the proposed agreement, the aggregate equalized assessed value of the Citgo refinery would be set at $260 million for 2014; $240 million for 2015; and $230 million for 2016, 2017 and 2018.

The agreement also stipulates within 21 days of approval from all parties that PDV Midwest Refining LLC, which operates Citgo, would make cash payments to Will County School District 92 and Lockport Township High School amounting to $753,700 and $349,996, respectively.

Those payments would represent a return of taxes refunded to PDV Midwest Refining as a result of a 2011 tax rate objection complaint. Within 10 days after, the company, along with Will County School District and Lockport Township

High School, would advise the Third District Appellate Court that the matters between them are fully resolved.

Novak declined to answer more questions on the agreement or the history of Citgo’s assessment dispute Wednesday, saying more information would be given in a news release Thursday.

Walsh said Novak would not answer more questions Wednesday. He said he preferred more information be released once all parties involved in the settlement approved of it.

“There’s going to be a time when we announce it completely,” he said.

Treasurer’s office to assist with unclaimed property Representatives will be at Joliet Public Library Saturday

By CHRIS LaFORTUNE clafortune@shawmedia.com SPRINGFIELD – Representatives from the Illinois Treasurer’s office will be at the Joliet Public Library on Saturday afternoon to help people discover whether they have unclaimed cash or valuables owed to them.

The treasurer’s office will be on hand from 1 to 3 p.m. at the library, 150 N. Ottawa St., to assist people.

“They will have a laptop computer and they will be able to help people search the database and ... if there is a claim, help people start that claim, and they will be available to answer any questions,” said Greg Rivara, spokesman for the Illinois State Treasurer’s office.

According to the treasurer’s office, there are 253,693 Will County names in the unclaimed property database. The total value of that unclaimed property comes to $47.03 million.

“This property often is forgotten about in a safety deposit box or it’s maybe a paycheck from an old employer, a store [gift] card that was misplaced,” Rivara said.

According to a news release from the treasurer’s office, one in four people who searched the I-Cash database last year discovered unclaimed property. The aver-

age value returned was $1,000.

People can check the treasurer’s office database at any time by visiting illinoistreasurer.gov.

If banks cannot identify the owners of unclaimed property after five years, and the treasurer’s office fails to identify someone after another five years, unclaimed items go into a treasurer’s office auction. The latest ends at noon Thursday, Rivara said, and also can be accessed at the

treasurer’s office website.

The treasurer holds on to any money collected from the auction in perpetuity, and if the owners of items are eventually identified, the money goes to them, Rivara said. Until it is claimed, the money is invested, and returns made on those investments go to pay the state’s bills.

“Typically, those investments will generate about $130 million a year,” Rivara said.

SHOREWOOD – Gaining home rule status through a referendum is tough in Illinois.

Residents of several municipalities throughout Illinois recently have rejected attempts to establish home rule.

Most recently, Barrington and Lake Zurich home rule bids failed in the Nov. 4 elections.

The last municipality to win home rule status through a referendum was Northfield in 2010. The city of New Lenox convinced voters to support home rule in 2008.

So Shorewood’s bid to become home rule in the April 7 election is anything but guaranteed.

If voters approve it, home rule would grant Shorewood the ability to exercise any power or function for its government including, but not limited to, “the power to regulate for the protection of the public health, safety, morals and welfare; to license; to tax; and to incur debt,” according to Section 6 of Article VII in the Illinois Constitution.

That includes sales tax, gas

tax, hotel or motel tax, property tax and a real estate transfer tax.

“The bottom line is, if you’re home rule, you’ve got a much broader taxing authority and regulatory authority,” said Joe McCoy, legislative director for the Illinois Municipal League. “If you have a home rule community, you can exercise any power, unless state statute says you can’t.”

“It’s essentially a blank check,” said Tom Joseph, government affairs director for the Illinois Association of Realtors. “Some municipalities can be very aggressive on property or people.”

One reason it’s hard to pass a referendum is because real estate organizations generally oppose it. However, the Illinois Realtors Association has stayed neutral on Shorewood’s attempt.

Mayor Rick Chapman said Shorewood seeks home rule to increase the sales tax so the village can pay for an alternate water source because the groundwater supply in Shorewood isn’t sustainable in the long term.

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Will County Board on Thursday is set to vote on a $332,567 contract with Montgomery-based Lite Construction for the planned First Midwest Bank building remodel.

The plan is to temporarily house some of the Will County Sheriff’s offices – now located in the antiquated Eagle Building at 20 W. Washington St. – on the second and third floors of the bank building at 158 N. Scott St. The county bought the bank building last year with the intent to build a new courthouse on the 4.3-acre site. But a new courthouse won’t happen for some time. County officials estimate the sheriff’s

operations will remain at the First Midwest Bank building for the next three to five years.

“This is just another step forward in our capital plan,” said Nick Palmer, chief of staff for Will County Executive Larry Walsh.

If approved, construction would begin and be completed by this summer.

Saddle Creek incentives

The board also is set to consider whether to provide tax incentives for Saddle Creek Logistics – a company seeking to relocate from its Elwood location to Joliet.

The tax abatement agreement gives Saddle Creek a 50 percent cut in property taxes over a three-year period. The company’s reduction of property taxes amount to $42,914

annually, according to documents.

Saddle Creek would employ 200 people at a plant that would conduct light assembly of off-road recreational vehicles and package beverages.

The project calls for a 1 million-square-foot plant, a $43 million investment in building costs, and $400,000 in machinery and equipment.

Earlier this month, Joliet officials agreed to a five-year, 50 percent tax abatement with Saddle Creek that amounts to about $70,000 a year.

The County Board also will consider whether to approve a proposed settlement agreement with Citgo Lemont Refinery, which, since 2010, has disputed the county’s property assessment of the oil refinery.

Margarita Hernandez, 35, was arrested in October 2012 after Joliet police learned she’d allegedly had sex with a then-15-year-old boy earlier that year. The encounter was reportedly recorded by Hernandez’s live-in boyfriend, John Gabriel, 78.

Gabriel, a retired journalist for The Times Weekly and

Weekly Reporter, is being tried on federal charges of manufacturing child pornography.

Defense attorney Steve Landis told Judge Edward Burmila on Wednesday that investigators knew GaMargarita briel began takHernandez ing the alleged pornography offline 11 days before the search warrant was issued.

“The material the warrant is seeking is stale. The information is also stale,” Landis said. He also argued that

while Gabriel’s emails to a then-17-year-old girl refer to taking nude photos of her, it was not determined those photographs are pornographic.

But Assistant Will County State’s Attorney John Connor said the emails Gabriel sent to the minor were to set up a sexual encounter involving her and Hernandez. Gabriel allegedly indicated the activities would be part of a religious ritual he would perform, according to court files.

Burmila said he would decide by April 2 whether the evidence recovered from the search warrant is admissible against Hernandez.

I-80 jammed following crash Wednesday morning JOLIET – Westbound Interstate 80 was jammed for more than an hour Wednesday morning after two vehicles collided.

Illinois State Police said the crash occurred at 7:38 a.m. just east of Chicago Street. According to reports, a red pickup truck and blue

Nissan sedan collided, rolling the Nissan onto its passenger side in the middle of the road.

Joliet Fire Battalion Chief Mike Stromberg said three men were inside the Nissan.

Two got out of the vehicle on their own and declined medical treatment.

“One man was trapped and had to be extricated. He was taken to Presence Saint

Joseph Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries,” Stromberg said.

The man driving the pickup truck also refused medical treatment, Stromberg said.

State police said the interstate was reopened shortly before 9 a.m.

Plainfield pushes forward on 127th Street reconstruction

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield is fast-tracking reconstruction of a 1.14-mile stretch of 127th Street, a project that could go to bid mid-summer of 2016, and be completed in early 2017.

The project extends from Heggs Road to Route 30, and will include a three-lane urban roadway from Heggs to 150 feet east of the Northwest Community Park Entrance.

It also will replace the culvert carrying 127th Street over the West Norman drain, build a 3,400-foot, shared-use path with lighting on the south side of the street and a new pedestrian crossing at the railroad track intersection.

“This is a problematic area that needs some concern,” Public Works Director Allen Persons said, adding that it was a dangerous stretch of roadway, especially in icy conditions.

On Monday, the Village

Board approved a $308,936 contract with Mokena-based Baxter and Woodman Inc. for the project. Baxter and Woodman was chosen because of prior experience with the Grande Park, Shenandoah and Kings Bridge developments, which will be affected by the construction.

In her presentation to the board, Baxter and Woodman representative Tara Orbon said the first two phases of the project would be worked on at the same time.

The first phase includes engineering studies and reports on air, traffic and drainage patterns. The second phase prepares contracts, plans and specifications, including obtaining permits from regulatory agencies and a five-year crash data analysis.

The village was awarded a $2 million surface transportation grant for the project in the fall. But Persons said there isn’t yet a cost estimate be-

cause of the project’s scope.

“Absent the $2 million, it’s a very difficult project financially for the village,” Village Administrator Brian Murphy said.

Other approvals

Road closures for the 2015 Saint Mary Immaculate 5K run on May 16 were approved.

The race will not close down Renwick Road this year, allowing for more traffic because of the Plainfield schools graduation on the same day.

The Village Board also approved an amendment to the annexation agreement for Somerset at Grande Park subdivision, changing front yard setbacks to 30 feet for three lots, and allowing three lots to have a 7,100-square-foot minimum to design around existing underground utilities.

The Village Board also approved an updated personnel manual, last reviewed 10 years ago.

Tollway seeks comments on proposed changes DOWNERS GROVE – The Illinois Tollway is proposing to

implement an annexation policy and update its excess land policy to better manage how agency-owned land is sold or transferred.

A public review of the proposed revisions is being offered by the Tollway to enhance accountability and transparency while ensuring the interests of those affected by the agency’s decisions are considered, according to a news release from the agency.

The proposed land policy will clarify the procedures for declaring Tollway property as excess so it can be disposed of while still allowing the agency to help determine how the land can be used for the greatest public or economic benefit.

The proposed policies are available for review at www. illinoistollway.com. A 60-day public comment period will extend through May 11. Comments may be provided via email, U.S. mail or in person at the next committee meeting on May 21.

Richland teacher contract negotiations resume March 30

Negotiating teams on both sides said scheduling issues have arisen with a new mediator.

“We’ve had two mediation sessions since the contract was turned down [in November],” Manley said. “We got a new mediator because the old mediator got promoted. ... The reason it’s taking so long is because the mediator couldn’t fit it into his schedule.”

Early said the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service is short-handed, and mediator Javier Ramirez has been booked.

“He just doesn’t have much availability,” he said.

Starasinich said the March 30 date was set in advance, and the board is focused on getting a positive result out of negotiations.

“It’s a back and forth thing,” she said. “It’s just a matter of sitting back down with the mediator.”

A spokesman from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service declined to comment, saying mediators

State wait

Manley said the union waits on other factors related to teacher issues at Richland, including the status of the union’s freedom of information request for Joliet attorney Jim Harvey’s investigation into teachers.

The investigation looked into Early’s claim that union leaders may have coerced teachers into voting no confidence in both Early and Principal Kelly Whyte in June.

At least 75 percent of tenured teachers voted no confidence in the administrators, citing a hostile work environment and administrative actions.

Harvey’s inquiry found the leaders did not violate labor laws during the vote, according to a board response.

Starasinich has said the investigation found teachers believe there is a hostile work environment, but there is no evidence of one. However, the board has declined to release Harvey’s report.

The FOIA request was made in November, but was denied by the district, citing personnel exemptions. The union appealed the denial to the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, where it remains.

“Teachers are concerned, but we’re united in working out a deal,” Union Vice President Steve Camp said.

No strike yet

When asked about the possibility of a strike, given teachers have worked without a contract since Sept. 1, Camp said teachers have no intention of striking unless “the board forces it on them.”

Camp doesn’t know when that breaking point could be.

“Obviously, the word ‘strike’ has gone throughout the building,” Camp said. “But there is a serious, full-on discussion about strategy when we’re doing that. Right now, we’re going to be negotiating in full faith, and hope the board is willing and constructive in getting a deal done.”

CREST HILL – Contract negotiations between the Richland School District 88a School Board and teachers are set to resume March 30 after several months of delays, officials said.

Officials on both sides say they want the result to be a completed, acceptable and fair contract that the teachers union and school board will accept.

“We’re hoping to take one more contract back to teachers after these talks,” said Dick Manley, president of American Federation of Teachers Local 604.

Board President Julie Starasinich said the board’s top priority is the teachers contract.

“It’s better if it’s resolved and we’re moving forward,” Starasinich said.

“The goal here is a fair contract,” Superintendent Michael Early said.

JEANETTE E. BJORKMAN

Jeanette E. (Johnson) Bjorkman, age 92, formerly a resident of Lockport, passed away on March 15, 2015, at The Holmstad Retirement Community in Batavia, where she resided for the past six years.

Jeanette was born in Joliet to William and Effie (Lundin) Johnson on February 5, 1923. The youngest of five Johnson children, she grew up in Joliet, and graduated from Joliet Township High School in 1941. After working as a bookkeeper at F.E. Schundler Company, she married John P. Bjorkman of Lockport in 1951. The couple made Lockport their home for fifty-five years. For much of that time, Jeanette worked as office manager for the family-owned painting and decorating service.

Jeanette is survived by her husband, John, of Batavia; daughters and sons-in-law, Lynn Bjorkman and Arnold Alanen of Madison, WI, and Joan Bjorkman-Murray and John D. Murray of Naperville; and grandchildren, Britta Murray of Tacoma, WA, and John B. Murray of Chicago. Also, sisters- and brothers-in-law, Phyllis Gumbrell of Carolina Shores, NC, Ruth and Stephen Quigley of Savannah, GA, and Jeanne and Gary Maiwald of Bolivia, NC.; along with many nieces and nephews.

Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents; a sister and brotherin-law, Linnea and Lester Johnson; and three brothers and sistersin-law, LeRoy and Lillian Johnson, Lawrence and Kathryn Johnson, and George and Eileen Johnson. Also, brother-in-law, Tom Gumbrell.

A member of the Lockport Covenant Church for most of her life, Jeanette faithfully participated in the work of the church in many ways. When her daughters were young, she also took a leadership role in local school activities.

Jeanette was an avid golfer; she won the Will County women’s golf championship six times between 1941 and 1955, and enjoyed the game well into her 80’s.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS BERLIN – Bernhard “Buddy” Elias, the first cousin and last close relative of teenage Holocaust diarist Anne Frank, has died at age 89.

The Anne Frank Fonds said Wednesday that Elias died peacefully Monday at his home in Basel, Switzerland, surrounded by his family.

Anne Frank became famous for a diary she kept while her family went into hiding from the Nazis in Amsterdam when she was 13. The Jewish teenager died in the

and moved to Amsterdam in 1933 with her parents and her sister, Margot, paid regular visits to her relatives in Switzerland before World War II broke out.

Elias said he played a Punch and Judy show with Anne when in 1938 he saw her for the last time before the Nazis closed in and they had to go into hiding.

“She suggested I should put on that dress in grandmother’s wardrobe and imitate her,” he told The Associated Press in an interview in 2007. “She was very amused by this and

laughed a lot.”

Elias told the AP that after the war he read Anne’s diary with astonishment. So did her father, Otto Frank, who unlike his wife and daughters survived the Nazi horrors.

“He read it a few pages per day only. He was overwhelmed by what his child had to say,” Elias said. “He used to say, ‘I didn’t know my daughter until I read her diary.’ ” Elias had a career as an actor and ice-skating comedian, which brought him fame beyond Switzerland. As star comedian with the English

ice show Holiday on Ice, he toured the world between 1947 and 1961.

Starting in 1996 he presided over the Anne Frank Fonds, created in 1963 by Otto Frank.

The foundation’s support for a wide range of charitable activities against any form of discrimination, racism and anti-Semitism was as important to Elias as safeguarding Anne Frank’s writings. He was eager to prevent commercial exploitation of her name.

Darin LaHood, son of ex-congressman, to vie for Schock’s seat

PEORIA – The son of former White House cabinet member Ray LaHood emerged as the leading contender Wednesday to replace U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock, as two other potential candidates abandoned thoughts of seeking the seat that is coming open after a spending scandal forced the Illinois congressman’s abrupt resignation.

State Sen. Darin LaHood, a Republican whose father held the central Illinois seat before Schock and then served as President Barack Obama’s transportation secretary, announced he would seek the seat during an appearance Wednesday morning on a radio show in Peoria, where his family has resided for decades.

LaHood, 46, said he plans to campaign on his record as a former state and federal prosecutor, and on his record as a fiscal conservative who advocated for ethics reform.

Two other GOP state senators – Jason Barickman and Bill Brady – were considering bids but said they decided against running in a special election that Gov. Bruce Rauner will call after Schock leaves office March 31.

Obama tells paper he wants library to be in Chicago

CHICAGO – President Barack Obama said he hopes his presidential library is built in Chicago but there are “some

entanglements.”

The Chicago Tribune said Obama made the comments during a “brief conversation” Saturday at the Gridiron Club dinner in Washington.

The comments first appeared in a Tribune editorial. The editorial didn’t include any explanation from Obama about the entanglements. But there has been debate over the University of Chicago’s bid because it calls for the library to be built on public park land.

SAE head outlines plan for improving fraternity’s diversity

CHICAGO – A fraternity that disbanded its University of Oklahoma chapter after some members were caught on video engaging in a racist chant is taking steps to become more

inclusive, including requiring all of its members, nationwide, to go through diversity training, a fraternity executive said Wednesday.

Blaine Ayers, the executive director of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, said at a news conference in Chicago he personally was disgusted and embarrassed by the video that surfaced last week.

He apologized for the pain it caused and outlined steps the Evanston-based administration was taking to “ensure that this never happens again.”

The video shows Oklahoma members engaging in a racist chant that referenced lynching and indicated that the chapter would never admit black students. The fraternity disbanded the chapter, and the university expelled two who had taken part.

CHICAGO – A federal judge said a wall-to-wall screen will block the public from seeing an undercover agent testify at the July terrorism trial of a 21-yearold Hillside man.

Adel Daoud’s lawyer, Thomas Durkin, spoke to reporters Wednesday after the judge’s decision at a status hearing. He said concealing prosecutors’ star witness will unfairly signal to jurors his client is dangerous.

Daoud denies trying to ignite a bomb outside a Chicago bar during a 2012 FBI sting.

Prosecutors said Daoud is also charged with soliciting the agent’s murder. They said revealing his identity could endanger the agent.

GOP pushes conservative budgets in House, Senate

By DAVID ESPO and ANDREW TAYLOR The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Making good on last fall’s campaign commitments, Republicans advanced conservative budgets in both houses of Congress on Wednesday, setting up a veto struggle over the fate of the health care law and promising a whopping $5 trillion in spending cuts to erase deficits by the end of the coming decade.

The possibility of billions more for the Pentagon and an overhaul of the tax code also emerged as GOP priorities, although there were significant differences between the dayold proposal in the House and the one unveiled during the day by Senate Republicans.

Defense spending aside, Medicare was chief among them. Senate Republicans, already eying the 2016 elections, balked at a politically sensitive House plan to turn health care coverage for seniors into a voucher-like program for those who enroll beginning in 2024.

Republicans claimed a balanced-budget, no-tax-in-

crease approach as the House Budget Committee neared an evening vote on its proposal.

The Senate panel set its vote for Thursday.

By contrast, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said President Barack Obama’s budget from earlier in the year raised “taxes by nearly $2 trillion, and increased the national debt by more than $7 trillion.

In other words, it was more of the same old tired, failed policies of the past.”

He said the GOP promises a plan “that will support economic growth and more opportunity for hardworking families, while protecting our most vulnerable citizens.”

Obama said Wednesday in Cleveland the Republicans offer “a path to prosperity for those who have already prospered.” He said the GOP budget “doubles down on trickle-down.”

It will be weeks or months – if then – before Republicans can turn their non-binding blueprints into legislation and send it to the White House for Obama’s signature or veto.

Before that, they will con-

centrate on pushing the rival budgets through the two houses. Next, they will try to agree on a compromise that they concede will stand as a test of their ability to govern.

Republicans promised during last fall’s campaign they would try to balance the budget if they won power.

They also said over and over they would work to eradicate the health care law that Obama has pledged to defend and the administration now says has provided coverage to more than 16 million who previously lacked it.

Details contained inside the budgets make a veto struggle with Obama over the health care law a virtual certainty, although the Supreme Court could render that largely moot in a ruling expected this spring on the constitutionality of a key portion of it.

Senate Republicans said they intend to use legislation that Democrats cannot block to accomplish their goal of repeal.

Both budgets envision a significant campaign to cut spending, with much of the projected savings coming from Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps and welfare.

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will County’s chief judge has temporarily rehired some of the court reporters laid off due to the state’s budget shortfall.

“I was able to bring four of them back utilizing funds to make them county employees for right now, but that’s only a temporary solution,” Chief Judge Richard Schoenstedt said.

Typically court reporters are state employees, but lawmakers passed a budget for that program last year that used funds the state comptroller later determined couldn’t

be used for that purpose.

As a result, the budget has run out for the fiscal year because the money wasn’t replaced.

Earlier this week, Schoenstedt laid off three part-time court reporters and two court specialists who monitor electronic recording. The 22 fulltime court reporters who remain employed by the state will take two unpaid furlough days each week.

The courthouse has already felt the effect of having fewer reporters available.

Earlier this week, Judge Edward Burmila postponed a trial for a 2010 sexual assault case.

“In the short-sightedness of the Legislature, it has created an abominable situation where court reporters are not available,” Burmila said. “Our federal and state Constitution ensure a public trial for the people who cannot be presented. The lack of a written transcript impacts directly on the public nature of the trial.

“We are operating right now with a circumstance where the court reporters are not going to be recompensed for the job that they do, and as a result I cannot engage in a multi-day jury trial in this case,” Burmila told the defendant.

“Not one of my students has any trouble getting hired anywhere,” she said.

Aldworth said the hands-on aspect of Wilco’s programs reinforces information students learn in the classroom. With her classes, students receive clinical experience that will aid them when they become a CNA. “They are able to take what they learn in the classroom and what they practice and do it on someone who has dementia or needs a lot of help,” she said.

Cece Hoffmann, a Plainfield East High School senior and CNA student, said she plans to work as a CNA while attending college. She hopes to be a neonatal nurse.

“You get to learn so much

stuff you don’t really know about,” she said about her classes. “You don’t really know everything that goes on behind the scenes.”

Right now, Hoffmann is learning how to take a pulse, blood pressure and temperature. She previously learned how to take care of senior citizens. On Wednesday, she was at Meadowbrook Manor in Bolingbrook, caring for patients.

Wilco Executive Director Katrina Plese said students can “try out a field” at Wilco.

The programs provide them with skills early, rather than waiting until they enter college, she said.

Students can take a state certification exam and walk away with credentials that will help them get jobs, she said.

“It’s that initial stepping stone to the next level they want to go,” she said.

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Mayoral candidate Bob O’Dekirk’s mobile campaign sign has been all over town, but on Wednesday morning, it was parked in the wrong spot.

O’Dekirk said he had the sign moved after hearing it was parked in a city parking lot at the arboretum on Broadway Street.

O’Dekirk, also a city councilman, said he was not aware the billboard attached to a truck was parked on city property.

“Someone from the city called me,” he said. “I didn’t know about it. I called the volunteer and had him move it.”

Joliet City Attorney Martin Shanahan said the matter was resolved when O’Dekirk removed the sign.

But after looking at the city ordinance regulating campaign signs, it is not clear the sign was parked illegally, Shanahan said.

“They [campaign signs] are not allowed in the parkway,” he said. “The parkway is generally in the area between the street and the sidewalk.”

Shanahan noted that the city is revising an ordinance on temporary signs.

“I’m going to have to take a second look at that ordinance and see how this fits in,” he said.

He noted a mobile sign creates interesting legal questions, since a truck with a sign attached might stop at City Hall for other business.

O’Dekirk said he did not know how long the sign was parked at the arboretum. It was there in the morning. By

1:30 p.m., it was gone, but on display elsewhere.

The billboard has gone around town for the past two weeks, he said.

“It’s been all over the city,” O’Dekirk said Wednesday afternoon. “I just saw it on Cass Street.”

O’Dekirk is one of three candidates in the mayoral race. Mayor Tom Giarrante is running for re-election. Andy Mihelich, chairman of the Joliet Junior College board, also is running for mayor.

Saving American Dream for our neighbors, selves VIEWS Kathryn Jean Lopez “I was on the subway the other day,” a dinner companion observed recently, “and the subway conductor said, ‘Please let your neighbor off first.’”

“I was stunned,” the New Yorker said. “We don’t think of each other as neighbors.”

These remarks occurred at a gathering marking the publication of “Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis,”

by Robert D. Putnam, a Harvard sociologist and author of “Bowling Alone.” In it, he focuses on his hometown of Port Clinton, Ohio, which, in the late 1950s, was “a passable embodiment of the American Dream, a place that offered decent opportunity for all the kids in town, whatever their background. A half century later, however, life ... is a split-screen American nightmare, a community in which kids from the wrong side of the tracks that bisect the town can barely imagine the future that awaits the kids from the right side of the tracks. And the story of Port Clinton turns out to be sadly typical of America.”

Many of the problems that lower-class kids face stem from economics: “In the upper, college-educated third of American society, most kids today live with two parents, and such families nowadays typically have two incomes,” Putnam writes. “In the lower, high-school-educated third, however, most kids live with at most one of their biological parents, and in fact, many live in a kaleidoscopic, multi-partner, or blended family, but rarely with more than one wage earner. Scores of studies have shown that bad outcomes for kids are associated with the pattern now characteristic of the lower tier, whereas many good outcomes for kids are associated with the new pattern typical of the upper tier.”

He continues: “Children who grow up without their biological father perform worse on standardized tests, earn lower grades, and stay in school for fewer years, regardless of race and

class. They are also more likely to demonstrate behavioral problems such as shyness, aggression and psychological problems such as increased anxiety and depression. Children who spend part of their childhood in a single-mother home are more likely to have sex earlier and to become young, single parents, re-creating the cycle.”

This has been the stuff of political argument, but Putnam, a man from a “modest background” wants us to face facts. He speaks emotionally about some of those who suffer and struggle on account of “the bottom falling out” in Port Clinton, and in his book he gives vivid portrayals of their lives and struggles.

“I want us to start a movement,” Putnam says, “in which we worry about all the kids in our community because I think it would be better for all of us, because I think it is morally right, because it would be good for our democracy and because ... in principle it ought to unite all of us. It really ought to. You can hear us want to have a fight about whether its structure or culture. Or whether we should do X or Y. Or whether it should be national or local. We can debate that, of course.”

And we do and should. But, first, he wants people to really, truly realize: “This is the core challenge facing our country. If we don’t fix this problem, we are not going to be one country.”

“Giving every child a fair chance in life is not just morally right, but economically,” he writes.

But his argument is not simply a matter for politicians. If everyone mentored one child of a different background, we could be the bridge that works to fill the gap, Putnam’s wife, Rosemary, tells me.

Putnam has taken an opportunity to challenge the conscience of a distracted country. He shows us the numbers and reminds us we need to be involved.

Because we want to be good, sure, but it also happens to be smart and productive for everyone, all that time and sacrifice.

Maybe even one subway seat at a time?

LETTER TO THE EDITOR CHANGES TO LINCOLN-WAY TRANSITION HOUSE WRONG To the Editor:

I need your readers’ help. In 2011, the Lincoln-Way school district built a beautiful Transition House for young adults with special needs.

Some of the skills being taught are balancing a checkbook, budgeting, daily cooking and mock interviewing, just to name a few. The complete cost of construction was paid using personal donations, school district funds and a grant.

The Transition House has been instrumental in helping students with special needs transition from living with their parents to living independently.

But that is about to change. The school district, without any community input, has decided to move these young adults from the Transition House to crowded classrooms at Lincoln-Way Central.

In 2014, Lincoln-Way started a separate LIFE Skills program at Lincoln-Way Central with a separate entrance. The LIFE program and the Transition House program were designed with different levels of

disabilities in mind.

I addressed the school board, stating they will not be following the law and educating these young adults in the least-restrictive environment. Two other parents said their children do not want to go back to a high school and they probably would not send them. Does the district think that by having a separate entrance, these young adults will not realize they are back in high school? Is the district minimizing these young adults’ abilities or perhaps taking advantage of their disability?

Although I have left messages and sent emails to the school staff and left a list of questions for the District 210 school board, I have yet to receive a response.

Please call the district at 815-4622254 and tell them you oppose their decision to not use the Transition House for the purpose it was built.

Ask them what their future plans are. Perhaps build a house of their own with taxpayers’ money and private donations again?

As thrilling as it was for Bolingbrook to slip past West Aurora, 50-49, in Tuesday night’s Class 4A Hinsdale Central Supersectional, I wish it had happened differently.

That’s because popular opinion suggests the flow of the game, and probably the outcome, would have been different had West Aurora’s main man – 6-foot-6 Illinois State recruit Roland Griffin – been able to play. He was suspended because of an incident that occurred earlier Tuesday.

However, suggesting the Blackhawks would be preparing to face mighty Stevenson – at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the semifinals at Carver Arena in Peoria – had Griffin played Tuesday is a disservice to the Raiders.

West Aurora also was without two others among its usual top six. Some would contend the Raiders should have beaten the shorthanded Blackhawks by substantially more than one point.

That’s not necessarily correct. Basketball is a game of matchups. Teams match up well against some opponents and not as well against others.

The group West Aurora had on the floor Tuesday proved to be a tough matchup for Bolingbrook. The Raiders had difficulty with turnovers, with 15 of their 21 coming in the second half. Some of that was the Blackhawks’ doing, some was the Raiders making mistakes.

“We relaxed a little, and they jumped on us,” Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost said of his team having a 45-32 lead in the third quarter before West Aurora went on a 13-0 run to tie it.

Had Griffin played, West Aurora would have done things differently, and Bolingbrook would have attacked the Blackhawks differently and perhaps defended them differently. The entire scenario would have changed.

West Aurora had veteran coach Gordie Kerkman running the show. The one

Gillespie’s son, Mike, will serve as master of ceremonies.

His other sons – Bob, Greg and Gordie Jr. – also might say a few words.

“With the help of [Director of Athletics] Dave Laketa at St. Francis, we also have put together a really great video of Dad in his younger days,” Gordie Jr. said. “Everyone will enjoy that.”

Gordie Jr. said the plan is to keep the celebration to an hour and a half, or as close to that as possible.

Ritter back to lead way at Plainfield South

By DRAKE SKLEBA Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – The hopes of the Plainfield South baseball team start with its 6-foot-4 University of Iowa-bound right-handed pitcher Shane Ritter.

Fresh off the basketball court, Ritter (5-3 in 2014) looks to be the ace. His fastball has been clocked consistently in the 87-90 mph range. He has four pitches in his arsenal, including a wicked curveball, a solid slider and a good changeup.

“I’m really looking forward to this season,” Ritter said.

“We have a number of quality pitchers, and I think we will really have a fine season. We have a senior pitcher returning from last year, Easton Frisby, who throws the ball real well. Our hitting should be much better, led by a couple of seniors, Tyler Dickey and Marco Melgoza.”

Trevor Henderson, the Cougars’ ace left-hander in 2014, has moved on to Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.

Right-hander Ryan McQueen graduated and is attending Aurora University, leaving a huge hole in the Cougars’ rotation. Coach Phil Bodine feels very confident that his two sophomore “young guns,” right-handers Austin Marozas and Konnor Ash, will fill the void.

The two “young guns” both have fastballs in the 84-86 mph range, with Marozas featuring a nasty slider. Ash has a wicked curveball and has been working on a changeup.

“In addition to myself and Easton Frisby, we have a sophomore in Austin Marozas who is getting looks from Division I colleges,” Ritter added. “And Konnor Ash should solidify our bullpen. Both Marozas and Ash top out at 86 mph. Sophomore Nick Mayerhofer will add much-needed hitting to our offense. Last year, we lost five 1-0 games.”

The problem for the 15-22 Cougars in 2014 was they had a hard time scoring runs. They also had some problems picking up the baseball behind their excellent pitching staff.

What else is new? As in 2014, Bodine’s Cougars have quality arms led by Ritter. For South to make a run at the Indians and Tigers, they must hit and pick up the ball better than they did in 2014.

“Plainfield North and Minooka will be the teams to beat,” Bodine said. “Plainfield East has a number of quality players returning. The entire conference will be much improved. We are very young, but I believe we will be competitive.”

PLAINFIELD – A preseason weightlifting session for the Plainfield Central softball team didn’t end with grunts and groans.

Instead, there was a unified shout of “1-2-3 Wildcats!’’

The team sounded ready to take the field and start the season – but that will have to wait, weather permitting, until Tuesday at Morris.

“This year, it’s very possible,’’ Central coach Anne Campbell said of playing the scheduled season opener. “It’s really possible because their fields are pretty good.’’

With seven seniors and an experienced starting pitcher, Central expects to be more than pretty good on any field.

Senior leadership starts with two co-captains – shortstop Michaela Schlattman, a four-year varsity starter, and second baseman Hannah Franceschini, a three-year starter.

“You can tell all the girls are putting in the effort and the hard work,’’ Schlattman said. “I have a good feeling that we’re going to have a positive outcome.’’

“There’s always a few adaptations based on the personnel for that year, but for the most part, we approach every season exactly the same,’’ Campbell said. “That is to build a common unity and team-first.

We work very hard on building that teamwork, that team bonding.’’

Part of that process during the winter months was a weightlifting competition within the team. A few of the returning seniors were in charge of teams to help encourage the whole program.

“That definitely helped,’’ Franceschini said. “It made everyone bond a little faster and sooner so we have a stronger bond early in the season.’’

“This group has been over the top, they’re working so hard, more so than I can remember,’’ Campbell said.

“They’re very focused on wanting to be successful.’’

SPRING TRAINING REPORT: PLAINFIELD EAST SOFTBALL

Plainfield East featuring a familiar look

By DENNIS NELSON Shaw Media Correspondent PLAINFIELD – It’s not unusual for a team to return most of its starters or most of its roster.

What’s unusual about Plainfield East’s softball team is it returns all but one player from the 2014 season.

That bodes well for the Bengals, who look to improve on last year’s 16-16 record.

“My expectations for the season are that everyone has a team-over-self mentality,” Plainfield East coach Chris Morris said. “I hope we hold ourselves and our teammates accountable.”

Plainfield East will lean on four returning All-Southwest Prairie Conference players, an improved defense and its experience to create consistent competition, no matter the opponent.

“We will have to be more consistent in all facets of the game,” said Morris, the school’s first and only softball coach. “We were very up and down last season.”

One of the many reasons for inconsistent play is a lack of focus on details.

“Our biggest hurdles are, obviously, the opposition and our attention to detail,” Morris said.

Other pressing questions include whether the Bengals can consistently score runs and who the starting catcher will be.

Rio, a captain, hit .403 with 20 runs and 10 stolen bases a season ago. Kalnicky led the Bengals with a .456 average to go with eight doubles. Sinnot will provide the bulk of the power after hitting .405 with four homers, nine doubles and 24 RBIs. “We are hoping for a great defensive season and big offensive numbers from Hannah,” Morris said. “Jessica is a good baserunner, and we look to her to step it up offensively. And Mikey has the potential to put up some big offensive numbers.”

The leading scorer in NAIA Division II with a 24 average, Gonnering earned honorable mention All-America accolades for the third time in as many years.

In addition to leading the

nation in scoring, she ranked second in offensive rebounding (4.9) and 11th in total rebounding (10.3).

Gonnering, who earlier this year was tabbed a Capital One Academic All-American for the third consecutive season, scored a school-record 720 points this season and established NAIA Division II records for most free throws made in a season (255) and career (702). The four-time All-Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference first-team pick finished her career with 2,235 points and a 20.5 average.

“We need our younger players to take their games to a new level,” Morris said.

The Bengals open Southwest Prairie Conference play April 7 against Romeoville.

Plainfield East went 9-5 in the league a season ago.

CHICAGO – Rookie Nikola Mirotic scored 20 of his 25 points in the second half, Mike Dunleavy added 21 points, and Pau Gasol had 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead the short-handed Bulls to a 103-86 victory Wednesday night over the Indiana Pacers.

Mirotic, who played 31 minutes off the bench, entered averaging 20.3 points in nine games in March. His previous best scoring month was the 9.9 points he averaged in December.

NEW YORK – Brad Richards broke a scoreless deadlock 7:19 into the third period, and the Blackhawks cooled off goalie Cam Talbot and the surging New York Rangers, 1-0, on Wednesday night.

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Dodgers starter Brandon McCarthy was hit hard as Chris Coghlan homered and drove in three runs to lead the Cubs over Los Angeles, 7-5, Wednesday.

“Physically, I feel fine,” McCarthy said. “I just have to look at what I did, correct it and move forward.”

McCarthy gave up six runs and eight hits in four innings.

In nine innings this spring, the 6-foot-7 Dodgers newcomer has allowed eight runs and 13 hits.

By SEAN LEARY Shaw Media Correspondent LOCKPORT – A passion has led Renea Taylor since she was a child, and a vision helped her take that passion in new directions as an adult.

Now with her own burgeoning church and a series of coming gospel singing performances, including one at The Sozo Group worship event Sunday, Taylor is merging her passion and vision to create a new destiny.

“If I can use my gifts to touch people’s lives and help bring them to God, that’s the best way I can think of to use them,” said Taylor, 58, of Plainfield.

Taylor has come to the right place. The Sozo Group’s founder and event organizer, Jessica Olivito of Lockport, is being led by a vision of her own. It’s grown since she began working on it last fall, Olivito said.

Olivito stressed that The Sozo Group is a grass-roots mission. It does not have nonprofit status at this time, because the group still is starting up.

“This weekend’s event is only the second one we’ve done,” Olivito said. “The first one was back in November.

It was a women’s worship experience with 10 different churches. It was a cool concept night of unity, such a powerful night, and this weekend is going to be even more powerful because it’s going to have four female worship leaders together. But it’s for men and women, and it’s titled ‘Never Be The Same.’ It’s going to be amazing.”

Taylor has sung since she was 8, growing up in East Chicago. Her first time in front of an audience was at 11, singing in church, because of a trick her mother played.

“My mom knew I was too shy to do it, so she told me she was sick and it would make her feel better if I sung in

church,” Taylor said. “It made me so happy to sing and so happy to have people tell me my singing moved them, and that stayed with me. That’s why I’ve been singing ever since.”

Taylor continued singing in church and pursued a career with a rhythm and blues/pop band called Bang, which toured worldwide and released a cassette in 1991.

“It was something I was hooked on from the time I was a kid, watching my older sister and brother with their

groups,” Taylor said. “I just got hooked on their energy and fun that they had on stage, and I wanted to do that, too.”

Bang ended in 2006, and Taylor and her husband, Dennis, moved to Plainfield, and her life and music became more entwined with her faith.

She started working with Community Christian Church in Romeoville.

“I really liked it. It was different, more pop music and Christian pop than I was used to, but I liked it,” Taylor said.

“Since then, my life has really been taking a great direction.

I became a worship leader, started a choir, and then my husband and I got the calling to start a church.”

On Sept. 14, the Taylors took the plunge and began holding services at their new Lakeside Worship Center, at the Plainfield Academy gymnasium. The crowds have grown for their weekly sessions at 10 a.m. Sundays.

“It’s a diverse group. We specifically want to be diverse, because it’s nice to look out into the church and see all kinds of people of all different sizes and colors and ages,” Taylor said. “We feel like that’s what heaven is going to be like – all different people of all different colors.”

While Taylor has a new home with her church, she’s still happy to get out and spread the word, and let her voice be heard, both speaking and singing. That led her to participate in this weekend’s show, which is part of a much larger movement, Olivito said.

The Sozo Group – after

the Greek word, Sozo, which means “protect our minds and heal our souls through Christ,” Olivito said – wants to build a network of churches to host between six and 15 events over the coming year, with 10 to 20 churches partnering with them, Olivito said. The Sozo Group is a nondenominational group that welcomes all, she said.

“We’re a group of Christian worshippers and artists looking to spark a revival by collaborating in worship experiences that highlight the power and presence of God,” Olivito said. “And we are doing so with very talented, very creative people who are sharing their gifts and faith with others.”

Such as Taylor.

“When Jessica approached me, I told her I’d love to be a part of what she was doing,” Taylor said. “I’m looking forward to it, just to be able to be with all of the other worship leaders and to be a part of something so big and to reach so many people.”

As for the future, Taylor hopes it holds more of the same, as she’s quite happy with the present.

“I just want to work alongside my husband to save as many souls as we can,” Taylor said. “I know what my purpose is in life, and that’s it – to sing and to help people and to help souls searching to be fulfilled. I can’t think of any purpose greater than that.”

Volunteers for youth ministry receive award

JOLIET – At the annual Diocese of Joliet Youth Ministry Banquet on Feb. 23, several adults from the FOLLOW Youth Ministry Program – St. Paul the Apostle and the Cathedral of St. Raymond, both in Joliet – won the “Light of the World” award for their volunteering with the youth.

The adults are Joanna Szymanski, Rich Lenski, Dave Bailey, Tim Cora, Lori Cora, Carol Stiff and Michael Bannon.

Joliet Franciscans honored in Lombard

JOLIET – A special Mass and luncheon were held recently at St. Pius X Parish in Lombard to celebrate the Joliet Franciscan Sisters’ 150th anniversary year.

The Joliet Franciscan Sisters arrived at St. Pius X Parish in 1956, when the parish was first established. The congregation president at that time – Mother Borromeo Mack – sent four sisters to staff the parish school.

Throughout the years, 72 sisters from the congregation served as teachers, principals and in pastoral positions within St. Pius X Parish. Sister Pauline Schutz, at St. Pius since 1978, continues to serve as pastoral minister; Sister Mary Jean Morris, congregation president from 1992 to 2000, taught at St. Pius in the 1970s.

In addition, several Joliet Franciscan Sisters traveled to South Florida to take part in festivities planned at Cardinal Gibbons High School and St. Coleman Parish, where the sisters began to minister in the late 1950s.

In 1961, Sister Marie Schramko arrived at Cardinal Gibbons to become the first principal of the girls section of the newly established high school. Two years later, Sister Janet Rieden joined her. Both sisters still are there.

Religious ed students in Lenten activities

St. Joseph Academy seeks summer teachers

A key play for third hand

Fred Allen, a comedian who died in 1956, said, “I always have trouble remembering three things: faces, names and – I can’t remember what the third thing is.”

That joke has been rewritten is various forms. For our second common error in this week’s columns, we turn to third hand play. The opening lead has been made, and dummy’s card played. What should third hand do?

Look at the East hand in today’s diagram. South is in four spades. West leads the club two. Which card should East play?

In the bidding, North, over West’s takeout double, might bid two spades (very cautious), three spades (better) or four spades (best, following the primary dictum of the Law of Total Tricks – in competition, bid as high as the number of trumps your side holds).

Whatever North chooses, though, four spades will be the final contract.

At trick one, East must play the club jack. Why? Here, South wins the trick with his ace and leads a trump, putting West back in. Trick one told West that East holds the club queen (otherwise, South would have taken the first trick with that card, not with the ace). So West should see that it is right to lead another low club. East will win with his queen and should shift to a heart.

West takes two tricks in that suit for down one. (If West has a diamond winner coming, it isn’t going anywhere, but heart tricks might – and will – evaporate.)

Finally, if declarer ducks the first trick, East should immediately switch to the heart nine. West’s lead marks South with the club ace, so returning that suit would be a waste of time.

• The final quarter is healthful sources of protein like fish, beans, nuts, seeds, poultry and eggs.

• A bottle on the left side is a reminder to use healthy oils, like olive and canola. Limit butter and avoid unhealthy trans fats.

We talk a lot about healthy eating in this column. That’s because you ask a lot of questions about it. It’s not unusual for my patients to ask me: “Is there really scientific evidence behind all this advice about a healthy diet?”

There have been studies involving millions of people whose diet and health have been followed for decades. We can say with confidence: People who eat according to these guidelines reduce their risk of several diseases that can shorten life and diminish its quality.

The Harvard Healthy Eating Plate is sound information. As nutrition researchers uncover more information over time, I’m sure the Healthy Eating Plate will undergo some changes to reflect important new evidence. But even if not perfect, it contains information you can bank on.

Dear Doctor K: Is a healthy diet still based on the food guide pyramid? Is there a better alternative?

Dear Reader: Twenty years ago, the USDA created its food guide pyramid. This symbol featured fats and oils at the tip and breads and grains at its base, with fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy in between.

The pyramid was meant to convey, in a simple illustration, everything needed to build a healthful diet.

But the original pyramid, as well as the updated 2005 version, was easy to misinterpret. For example, some people thought the top foods were most important, rather than the other way around. The pyramids didn’t provide enough details about healthful food choices within each category.

They made no distinction, for example, between fatty red meat and lean fish. What’s more, the pyramid proportions were not always based on the most recent scientific evidence.

As a result, in 2011 the USDA introduced a totally new icon called MyPlate. Experts from the Harvard School of Public Health and the Harvard Health Publications Division of Harvard Medical School then created an even better alternative.

It is based on a wealth of nutrition research. (I’ve put an illustration of the Harvard Healthy Eating Plate on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

You can use the plate as a guide to distributing foods on your own plate.

Of course, not every meal will look like the Healthy Eating Plate. But your meals over the course of the day can reflect these proportions. Here is what’s on the plate: • Fully half of the plate contains fruits and vegetables.

Dear Abby: I am the youngest of three boys. When I was growing up, my brothers didn’t have much to do with me. At times they were cruel, mocked my interests and made fun of my friends. At 19 I moved into the dorms, even though I was attending college locally.

My professional life took me away from my hometown for 25 years. Both brothers pretty much ignored me, except for calls on my birthday that were filled with awkward silence because we didn’t know each other well enough to talk about anything. I lived abroad for long periods, and even though I sent emails and postcards, I never heard anything from them in reply.

Now I live back in my hometown and I am expected to participate in holiday and family events because “it’s family.” Please give me the words to use to refuse invitations I do not want, from a family who made it clear that they had no use for me for so long. –Wary in Wisconsin Dear Wary: Give the following standard refusal: “Thank you for wanting to include me, but I already have other plans.” No one can argue with that. I do, however, suggest you choose ONE holiday a year to spend with your “family” as a way of maintaining minimal contact. That way they can’t accuse you of snubbing them.

Dear Abby: Three widowed friends of mine still have their late husbands’ voices on their answering machines. I think it’s spooky and in really bad taste.

Is there any way to gently suggest to them that they change their greeting to one in their own voices or an anonymous one? I’m a widow, too, and I wouldn’t think of leaving my greeting that way.
