Adamic holds slight lead

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com Political newcomer Lauren Staley-Ferry was the top vote-getter in the Democratic primary for Will County Board District 9.

For most of the night, Staley-Ferry maintained a lead over incumbents Walter Adamic and Diane Zigrossi, finishing with 41 percent of the votes.

Still waiting on early and absentee votes to be counted, which two incumbents will appear on the ballot with Staley-Ferry remained in question.

Just 27 votes separated Adamic and Ferry. Adamic was ahead.

With all precincts reporting, Adamic, 52, of Joliet had 30.17 percent of the vote.

Zigrossi, 54, of Crest Hill, received 28.95 percent of the vote.

Adamic has been on the board for 25 years. Zigrossi was first elected to the board in 2008.

Adamic said because early and absentee votes have yet to be included in the total it was “too early to tell” whether he has secured a spot on the November ballot.

“It could change. The absentee and early voting haven’t been entered into the picture at this point,” he said. “In some regards, [not winning the nomination] would be a disappointment.”

Republican candidate Annette Parker, of Crest Hill, ran unopposed in the Republican primary.

Voters in November will elect two of three candidates to represent the district, which covers parts of Joliet, Homer Glen, New Lenox, Lockport and Crest Hill.

Staley-Ferry could not reached Tuesday night.

District 11 Two county board incumbents stayed on top in the Republican primary for Will County Board District 11.

Suzanne Hart, 48, and Charles “Chuck” Maher, 56, defeated businessman Michael “Big Mike” Strick, 51, of Naperville.

With 23 of 23 precincts reporting, Hart came in with 41 percent of the votes while Maher received 37 percent. Strick came in with just 22 percent of the votes.

Winning the primary election essentially means Hart and Maher will have a spot on the county board considering no candidates ran in the Democratic party.

The district goes into parts of south Naperville in Will County, as well as DuPage and Wheatland townships.

The four winning candidates in both races have earned a spot on the November ballot, with two county board members representing each district.

lleonecross@shawmedia.com In the end, it was longtime attorney Daniel Kennedy who came out on top in the seven-way race for the Democratic nomination for 2nd Subcircuit judge.

With 54 of 59 precincts counted, Kennedy had 879 votes, or 27.70 percent, ahead of Associate Judge David Garcia, who came in second with 665 votes.

Tina Filipiak came in third with 12.57 percent of the votes and private attorney Jim Murphy came in fourth with 14.59 percent. Dawn Underhill, Moira Dunn and Stewart Ferriera each ended up with fewer than 10 percent of the votes.

Kennedy, an attorney since 1986, still works part time as a public defender.

Rippy will go head-to-head on the November general election ballot with Democrat Sherri Hale, who went unopposed in the Democratic primary. The seat will be left vacant with Judge Robert Livas’ pending retirement in November.

Rippy, who also serves on

the Plainfield Village Board, came to Will County in 2000 to take a job with the state’s attorney’s office. He worked drafting criminal legislation in Springfield before returning to private practice here.

There is also a newly created judge’s seat in Subcircuit 1 that will be filled in November by either attorney Diana Para, a Democrat, or Associate Judge Dave Carlson, a Republican. Both are uncontested in the primary.

Republican winner in sheriff’s race unclear; Kelley wins Democratic nom

Nick Ficarello held a narrow lead in the Republican primary for Will County Sheriff Tuesday night.

But the winner in that race was unclear, while Mike Kelley handily won the Nick Democratic pri- Ficarello mary.

Kelley will battle it out in with the Republican winner in November.

Ficarello was ahead of Ken Kaupas by 20 votes in the Republican primary before a glitch shut down the vote totals at press time.

The number reflected all 303 precincts counted on election night. However, it did not include early and absentee voting results that had yet to be counted before the county clerk’s system shut down at about 9:20 p.m.

Kelley defeated Ed Bradley and Steve Egan in Tuesday’s Democratic primary.

Kelley said he felt being “the only true Democrat” gave him the support he needed to win the primary.

“With Egan running as a Republican four years ago and Bradley’s voting record [which includes Republican elections], I think they sent a message that just won’t get you welcomed with open arms,” Kelley said.

Egan called Kelley and left a message conceding the race around 9 p.m. Bradley was also planning to call to “wish him luck.” Egan and Bradley both felt Kelley’s first spot on the ballot may have given him more votes.

“I’m still wrapping my head around the defeat, but I am proud of how I ran the campaign,” Egan said.

Current Will County Sheriff Paul Kaupas, Ken Kaupas’ second cousin, chose not to seek a fourth term.

Ficarello, of Manhattan, served 31 years with the sheriff’s police. He was later director of campus security at Lewis University and is currently a part-time patrol officer in Posen.

Kaupas, of Shorewood, served 26 years with the Illinois State Police and retired as a captain. He is now the sheriff’s deputy chief in charge of public affairs and special operations.

Ficarello made a campaign issue of Kaupas’ 10-day suspension from the state police in 2002. Kaupas was accused of pressuring his secretary to farm out transcription work to off-duty employees while they kept a finder’s fee. Kaupas’ disciplinary report on was posted on Ficarello’s campaign website.

“I believe Ken Kaupas would not be able to pass a background check for a probationary officer on the sheriff’s department based on his past history, much less qualify to run for sheriff,” Ficarello said.

Kaupas criticized Ficarello for the “unguided missile” of the 2004 Riley Fox homicide when he ran investigations.

The 3-year-old girl’s father was pressured by detectives to confess and spent months in jail before being released once DNA tests were completed.

The Board of Elections reports Kaupas had over $15,000 at the end of 2013, while Ficarello had over $9,000. Ficarello spent $3,500 on signs and $200 on Facebook advertisements during that time.

Bradley, the University Park police chief who spent 21

years with the sheriff’s office, lost a three-way primary by slightly more than one percentage point four years ago.

Egan, a lieutenant with 24 years on the sheriff’s department, ran against Paul Kaupas in the Republican primary that time.

Kelley, who had the support of every Democrat holding countywide office, has been a deputy for 26 years. He is a Lockport Township trustee and previously served four years as a Lockport alderman.

The state Board of Elections last quarterly report said Egan had raised over $30,000 by the end of last year, while Kelley had over $7,000 during that same time period. Kelley spent over $2,000 on campaign brochures last fall.

The state board did not list

a quarterly report from Bradley’s campaign.

Low turnout determines election in Will County

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Elvia Ruiz of Joliet said she went out to vote because it was her duty.

Not many other Will County citizens did.

“It’s a duty and a privilege to vote,” said Ruiz, who cast her vote Tuesday afternoon at Taft School. “It’s important to come out every election. I’ve been voting since I was 18.”

Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots said voter turnout was very low throughout the county, after talking with election judges throughout the day.

“We’ll be lucky if we get 17 percent,” Schultz Voots said late Tuesday afternoon before the polling places closed.

With 288 out of 303 precincts reporting, 50,905 ballots were cast Tuesday, according to vote totals posted on the county clerk’s website. With 389,369 registered voters, that’s 13 percent turnout, although the number will go up when the final precincts are counted.

Many voters were regulars at the polls, including Hank Bopp, who voted at the old St. Patrick’s Catholic School in Joliet.

“I get to see who is out

there for the November elections,” Bopp said, adding that he is looking forward to finding out which Republican will run against Pat Quinn for governor.

The governor’s race intrigued Joliet residents Mike and Ginger Dudek, who thought the mudslinging in that race sparked interest. They also brought their 11-year-old daughter, Cecylia, to the polls.

“It’s important for her to see the whole process,” Ginger Dudek said.

The lack of voter participation may have led to fewer reported elections violations, according to Will County State’s Attorney spokesman Charles Pelkie.

“There are a remarkably few number of complaints,” Pelkie said.

Pelkie said as of 7 p.m. there were two complaints about candidates campaigning too close to polling places.

Both complaints in Wheatland Districts 2 and 12 occurred in the Tallgrass subdivision in Naperville.

“The issues were resolved on-site,” Pelkie said. “We have teams of a sheriff’s deputy and an assistant state’s attorney that respond to complaints about improper elec-

tion tactics or whatever it the complaint is.”

The state’s attorney’s office is investigating a potential identity fraud and elections complaint from the 97th District state representative race.

Shorewood Mayor Rick Chapman filed the complaint to find out who sent a mailer – which contained his photo and address – over the weekend. The mailer bashed one of his two opponents, Plainfield businessman Mark Batinick.

Chapman has repeatedly said he wouldn’t become involved in the negative ad war between Batinick and opponent Oswego teacher Amanda Mancke.

“This is being made to look like it’s from me,” said Chapman, who is planning to file charges against whoever sent the mailer.

Batinick brought the ad to Chapman’s attention after suspecting it wasn’t from his opponent. Chapman called the state’s attorney’s office Monday and was notified Tuesday morning the office will investigate the complaint.

“We’ve assigned it to an investigator,” Pelkie said.

“We’ll take a look and make a determination if other agencies need to be brought in.”

REFERENDUM BALLOTS

Voters turn down 6 of 9 referendums

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – The majority of referendums from seven area taxing districts failed to pass Tuesday.

On Tuesday, one referendum for Chaney-Monge School District 88 and two within Plainfield Township Park District passed. Referendums failed for Wilton Township, New Lenox Park and Fire Protection Districts, Steger-South Chicago Heights Public Library District, Homer Township Fire Protection District and one referendum with the Plainfield Park District.

The New Lenox Fire Protection District asked for approval for a referendum to increase tax rates from 36 cents to about 49 cents per $100 of assessed property values. The referendum appeared to fail. With 17 out 20 precincts reporting, the no vote was 54 percent.

“Our mission statement remains the same, and we’ll still try to put in the best effort we can,” said Joe Levey, board trustee for the district.

New Lenox Community Park District officials asked to maintain the park district’s current tax rate at roughly .06 cents of taxing authority. With 18 out 21 precincts, 65 percent of the vote was no.

Greg Lewis, the park district’s executive director, said he wondered if voters were confused by the referendum on the ballot, which stated officials were looking for an increase when they district wanted only to maintain its tax rate.

“I felt like we got the message out there but the problem is it’s a confusing question,” he said.

Fire Protection District asked voters for approval of a referendum for the sale of $4.7 million in bonds by the district to secure funding to alter, improve and equip existing facilities, procure vehicles, firefighting apparatus and equipment. Their referendum failed with 53 percent voting no.

Plainfield Township Park District had three advisory referendums on the ballot on term limits for board members, building or buying an indoor recreation facility and permits for dog parks. The referenda for term limits for board members and investigation into indoor recreation facility passed while the permit for dog parks failed.

Chaney-Monge School District 88 officials in Crest Hill sought voter authorization for the issuance of no more than $3 million in capital improvement general obligation bonds to provide school building improvements. Their referendum passed with 53 percent of voters approving.

Wilton Township officials and the Steger-South Chicago Heights Public Library District officials asked for tax increases on their referenda. Both of them failed, with 102 voters voting against Wilton Township’s referendum and 161 voting against Steger-South Chicago Heights library’s referendum.

Don’t look for the policy to change any time soon.

The issue of alley plowing was raised at the March 4 Joliet City Council meeting after some renters noted they had no place to park during snowstorms. The city’s snow ordinance prohibits street parking if more than 2 inches of snow falls.

But the city has neither the manpower or the equipment to take on the task, Public Works Director Jim Trizna said.

The city has 33 plow truck drivers, down from 44 in 2007, Trizna noted.

The operation can take anywhere from 18 to 24 hours, and is usually followed by additional plowing at intersections, he said.

In addition, the city contracts out plowing for Joliet’s 600 culs-de-sac.

The city’s plow trucks are too large to plow the culs-de-sac.

The situation can be even worse in alleys.

“It’s a manpower issue, plus

our trucks are too big,” Trizna told members of the Joliet City Council Public Service Committee on Monday.

Council members Mike Turk and Jim McFarland agreed to recommend the council maintain the current policy of not plowing alleys.

In related business, the city is all but out of road salt. Joliet has used nearly 17,000 pounds of salt this year, up from 11,000 to 12,000 in a normal year, and its four domes are nearly empty, Trizna said.

The city council approved spending $411,900 to purchase an additional 6,000 tons of rock salt from North American Salt through the City of Naperville.

The 6,000 tons are on top of another 10,000 tons that Joliet plans to purchase for $493,100 through the state of Illinois.

Channahon school board assessing building needs

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – Members of the Channahon School District board discussed – but took no action – Monday on the possibility of reducing the number of schools in the district from four to three.

The district’s enrollment has been steadily dropping for the past few years and is pre-

dicted to continue to fall for at least the next five years. The board already has reduced the number of kindergarten classes by one for the 2014-15 school year and is not replacing some of its retiring teachers.

“If we ever need to consider using this building [Pioneer Path] differently,” Superintendent Karin Evans said, “the fourth-, fifth- and sixthgrade building would be Three

Rivers, and early childhood through third grade would be at Galloway.”

If a school is closed, board members said they would look at what modifications may be needed to accommodate the increase in students at the three remaining schools. The board also discussed renovating areas of N.B. Galloway and Three Rivers.

Building a new gym at Galloway would cost an estimated $2.6 million, including washrooms, a storage area and perhaps an office area.

Evans and several board members seemed to prefer the idea of the multi-purpose room/lunch room rather than a new gym. The room would be built off the kitchen and would have additional washrooms and a storage room. The tables would fold and roll into the storage room when the room is needed for other uses.

“It would easily fit two grade levels at a time for lunch, if we so choose,” Evans said, “and leave four to five hours to function with P.E.” The multi-purpose room would cost an estimated $2.1 million. The board also looked at the possibility of bringing Galloway on to city sewer, as opposed to the septic system currently used.

Architectural plans were also viewed for remodeling three existing rooms at Three Rivers School to classrooms.

The spaces, formerly industrial technology classrooms, are currently used for storage. It would cost about $600,000 to convert the rooms to classrooms, but the board asked for additional designs for smaller classrooms at a lower cost.

of Pioneer Path School, the building could be leased to another educational group, such as the area’s special education cooperative, which already has contracted to house its Communication Adaptive Behavior Program students at two Channahon schools.

No changes would need to be made at Channahon Junior High School, but gym space would need to be addressed at N.B. Galloway if an additional grade level is added.

Galloway has one large room that serves as both a lunchroom and gym space, so physical education classes cannot be held for two hours mid-day while lunch is being served. That system would not work should additional students move into the building.

An architect was hired to show the board how the school could be adapted to make more room for physical education.

The two options presented were to build a separate gymnasium or to expand the cafeteria to a multi-purpose room/ lunch room.

“We need additional space so we don’t have to double the P.E. classes like we do now,” Evans told the board. “Two hours out of every day now our gym is a lunchroom. That cuts down on the functionality of the building.”

Batinick, Serbin to represent democrats; McDermed GOP

97th District Batinick, a Plainfield businessman, topped Shorewood Mayor Rick Chapman and Oswego High School Spanish teacher Amanda Mancke in the Republican primary.

“We stayed on the issues and talked about jobs and the economy,” Batinick said. “I think that’s what was on top of the voters’ minds.”

Other issues that seemed to resonate with voters were term limits and the need to get Illinois’ fiscal house in order, Batinick said.

In the Democratic primary, Grosskopf ran unchallenged.

The two will face off Nov. 4 for the seat formerly held by state Rep. Tom Cross, R-Oswego, who has represented the area since 1993, served as minority leader, and is now run-

ning for state treasurer.

Batinick has been a precinct committeemen, unsuccessfully ran for Will County auditor in 2012, and worked on Adam Andrzejewski’s campaign for governor in 2010.

37th District In the 37th District state representative race, Republican Margo McDermed and Democrat Nichole Serbin will vie for the 37th House District seat left vacant by the retirement of Rep. Renee Kosel, R-New Lenox.

McDermed handily beat rivals Gayla Smith and Arthur Lukowski, who were both political newcomers.

“I think the message is that I have the right combination of experience, conservative values and courage that resonated with the voters,” said McDermed, a Will County Board member and former Frankfort Township clerk.

“People told me over and over they like that experience,” McDermed said. “People don’t have to take my word for it.

They can look at what I actually did. I put my money where my mouth is and vote as a fiscal

conservative.”

A corporate attorney, McDermed spent 30 years in the oil industry negotiating with companies and foreign countries.

Her key focus was ensuring that the temporary 67 percent state tax hike expires next year. Other issues for McDermed included maintaining local school control, helping small business and ensuring government transparency.

Serbin, of Mokena, beat opponent August Deuser of Lockport in the Democratic primary.

Serbin credited her victory to “the fact that I am pretty straight forward.”

“There is no hidden agenda with me,” said Serbin, who runs a New Lenox disc jockey service. “I think a lot of people out there responded well to that.”

Serbin’s key focus is increasing the state minimum wage, providing better veteran care and ensuring women’s and gay rights.

“My goal is not to make the rich richer, but to make the middle class thrive,” Serbin said.

Kendall County Deputy Bryan Harl said the collision happened about 3:30 p.m. on Ridge Road near Holt Road – an unincorporated area.

“The 49-year-old man was riding north on Ridge Road behind a Chevrolet Blazer driven

“When the Blazer made a left turn, the motorcycle struck the driver’s side of the vehicle.”

The motorcycle driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Blazer driver was not injured.

Harl said the accident remains under investigation.

Kinzinger pounds tea party rival

Probably not that of U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger.

On Tuesday, Kinzinger sailed past his tea party opponent, David Hale, in the Republican primary for the 16th Congressional District, which includes parts of Will and Grundy counties.

Kinzinger said in a telephone interview that people want him to go back to Washington to change things.

“It’s very clear that I’m not happy with the direction in Washington, D.C. I have shown I can make the tough votes,” Kinzinger said.

Some have suggested that Kinzinger is eying higher offices, particularly Republican Mark Kirk’s U.S. Senate seat.

Asked about that, Kinzinger would not rule out running for Kirk’s seat in 2016, saying he makes a decision on his political career every two years.

“I just won this primary election,” he said. “My focus was on winning this election.

We’re excited about where we are at.”

In other areas of the country, well-heeled conservative groups have funded challengers to Republican incumbents deemed insufficiently conservative. But that hasn’t been the case in the 16th District, where

Kinzinger, who has criticized those groups, raised nearly $1 million to Hale’s $5,000.

In the 2012 primary, Kinzinger of Channahon, who had represented the 11th District for two years, faced Don Manzullo, the 20-year incumbent from the 16th.

The year before, the Democratic-run state Legislature redrew the boundaries of the 16th District to put both men in the 16th District. The redistricting packed as many Republican voters as possible from the region into the 16th District so that other districts could go Democratic.

In the primary campaign, Kinzinger, who beat Manzullo with 53 percent of the vote, made the case that he was the more conservative candidate, ready to cut back government and taxes, a message that worked well with the tea party.

But Hale, the Rockford Tea Party’s founder, said Kinzinger and other Republicans are moving away from conservatism, taking the congressman to task for backing spending agreements with President Barack Obama.

Kinzinger, Hale said, is part of the “Republican surrender caucus.”

11th District race results trickling in SHAW MEDIA With over half of the votes counted as of 9:45 p.m.

Tuesday, Grundy County board member Chris Balkema had the lead over three other candidates seeking the Republican nomination for the 11th Congressional District.

He is facing Naperville businessman Bert Miller, conservative talk show host Ian Bayne of Aurora and state Rep. Darlene Senger, R-Naperville, for the seat. Lisle resident Craig Robbins dropped out of the race.

With 277 of 417 precincts reporting, Balkema had 7,998 votes, Senger 7,490 votes, Miller has 5,731 votes and Bayne 857 votes.

The 11th District includes all or parts of Bolingbrook, Joliet, New Lenox and Shorewood, as well as Aurora, Naperville and Woodridge. U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, has held the seat since November 2012 after defeating former U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert.

Briley beats Marx in Republican primary race for Grundy sheriff

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Eagle’s Hall was filled with smiling faces and laughter Tuesday evening as newly-elected Republican Grundy County sheriff’s candidate Ken Briley watched the winning votes roll in.

“I’m excited. It’s been a lot of hard work, and hard work pays off,” Briley said. “I’m honored.

I’m humbled. It’s been a privilege to work for the citizens of Grundy County.”

Briley defeated fellow Republican Ron Marx to win a

seat in the general election.

With 42 of 42 precincts reporting, Briley had 2,356 votes and Marx had 1,631, according to the unofficial results from the Grundy County Clerk’s office.

The sheriff’s seat has been filled by a Democrat for more than 40 years, according to the Grundy County Clerk and Recorder’s Office. Briley will face Democrat Kevin Callahan in the Nov. 3 general election. Callahan was appointed sheriff in January 2013 after the death of Sheriff Terry Marketti.

“We got a lot of work ahead of us. We’ve got to regroup,”

Briley said. “Kevin Callahan will be a strong opponent.

He’s a very well-respected law enforcement officer. I look forward to my challenge with him.”

Briley is the director of the Minooka Emergency Management Agency and a full-time officer for Minooka police. He previously served as the warden of Stateville Correctional Center and continues to serve as a part-time officer for the Morris and Coal City police departments. He also worked 10 years as a fireman in Plainfield.

“The main thing for me is to get my message out to the people and let them know I have a plan for the county,” Briley said. “We want to raise the integrity level, make sure the sheriff’s office is accredited.”

Briley added that he wants to look at spending in the sheriff’s department and conduct an audit of the jail.

Briley beat out Marx who ran for the sheriff’s seat against Marketti in 2010.

“I concede to him, it’s what the voters who showed up wanted,” Marx said. “I think all of the candidates are disap-

pointed with the low turnout.”

Marx is the lieutenant and director of training for the Morris Fire Protection and Ambulance District and is a certified paramedic. He retired from the Naperville Fire Department after 20 years of service. Before working in Naperville, he began his career serving five years as a Morris police officer while also serving as a paramedic.

“I won’t run for anything again,” Marx said. “I’m done.

I wanted to make a change and I’m hopeful that those changes will still happen.”

Rauner wins GOP nom

By SARA BURNETT and SOPHIA TAREEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Venture capitalist Bruce Rauner won the GOP primary Tuesday in his bid for Illinois governor, as voters embraced a first campaign by the multimillionaire who flooded the airwaves with vows to run the Democratic stronghold like a business and curb the influence of government unions.

With Republicans eyeing what they view as their best shot in years to win the top job in President Barack Obama’s home state, Rauner defeated three longtime state lawmakers – including the current state treasurer. He advances to a November matchup with Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn, who easily won his nomination for a second full term.

Between Quinn and predecessor Rod Blagojevich, now imprisoned for corruption, Democrats have held the governorship since 2003. But Rauner could present a serious threat, partly due to a massive campaign bank account that already includes more than $6 million of his own money.

For voters across Illinois, the governor’s race represented a potentially transformative battle over union influence, with some voters saying they wanted to break an alliance between organized labor and Democrats, who have long controlled most statewide offices and the Legislature.

Organized labor battled back out of concern that Rauner could seek to weaken unions in the same way GOP governors have in other states across the Midwest.

Rauner saids he would model his governorship after those of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and former Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels. Both significantly rolled back union power in what they said were necessary steps to attract business and

reduce costs. Rauner defeated state Sens. Bill Brady and Kirk Dillard and state Treasurer Dan Rutherford in the primary.

“Rauner is going to be a bull in a china shop; we need a bull,” said Tom Sommer, a 57-year-old real estate broker from the Chicago suburb Hinsdale. “It’s not going to be more of the same.”

Issues such as a public pension overhaul and high taxes “are coming to the fore and the old guard is not going to handle that,” Sommer said, adding that he voted for Rauner because of his tough talk against the unions that represent public sector workers. That sentiment persists despite Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn’s push to fix Illinois’ finances by overhauling the heavily underwater public pension systems, which earned him the unions’ ire.

Rauner also has won supporters with his call for term limits. Union leaders, meanwhile, sought Rauner’s defeat by encouraging members to pull Republican ballots and vote for Dillard, who picked up several union endorsements.

The typically left-leaning unions spent more than $6 million on the GOP primary, both in anti-Rauner and pro-Dillard ads. Rauner raised more than $14 million, including $6 million of his own money – more than any candidate seeking a gubernatorial nomination in state history.

Rauner warned supporters about the unions’ efforts, saying Quinn’s “allies” were trying to hijack the election. He said legislative term limits could break the labor-Democratic alliance.

Quinn’s first re-election ad of the season – focusing on Rauner’s evolving stance on raising the minimum wage – hit the airwaves Tuesday evening.

Quinn has called for increasing the state’s rate from $8.25 to at least $10 an hour. Rauner had initially called for a cut and later said he’d raise it under certain circumstances.

A: It’s never too early to plan for the transfer of your business to the next generation of owners. Whether you intend to transfer the business to the next generation of family owners, or to a key employee, early planning can reduce the income, gift and estate tax consequence of transferring your business. Additionally, a well-thought succession plan can reduce the likelihood of litigation, or the premature cessation of business operations, which can result when business succession is left “up in the air.” Items to consider include the following: 1. Buy-Sell Agreements between current owners - a well-drafted Buy-Sell Agreement sets forth who will purchase the business in the event of a premature death (this can “freeze” the value of the business for federal estate tax purposes,

as well as provide a source of funds to the estate, which will be available to pay inheritance taxes and other administration expenses, without the need to obtain bank financing, or to sell the business; a Buy-Sell Agreement can also control in the event of the bankruptcy, disability or divorce of an owner).

2. Insurance (Key Man/Woman) insurance can be utilized to inject money into the business in the event of the premature death of a key employee.

These funds can be used to hire replacement personnel, or to provide a “cushion” until the business weathers the storm.

Early planning can minimize the risk and expense of having no succession plan in place. Disastrous consequences can result, both for the business and your family, if succession of the business is not carefully reviewed.

DEAR READERS: The age of CAVEAT EMPTOR — let the buyer beware — is still with us. In the past several weeks I have had several elderly clients come to me with the same problem. My clients are all in their mid-eighties and one probably has the onset of Alzheimer’s or dementia.

What happened was this: After getting a year-end notice in the mail from their bank that a certificate of deposit was coming due, a bank employee called them at home and made an appointment with them to come into the bank to renew the certificate.

When they went to the bank they were introduced by a bank employee to another person who was sitting in an office in the bank. This person told my clients that the bank had a “new higher interest program” that would provide them with higher interest income than the bank’s CDs. This meeting lasted no more that 5 to 10 minutes.

One of my clients even went back and met with this same person again and closed out another one of her CD’s to put into the bank’s “new higher interest program”.

It turns out that the person my clients met with was not an employee of the bank.

He was an out-of-town, “certified senior advisor”, insurance agent. What he sold my 80+ year old clients were 20 - 25 year, variable or deferred annuities. These annuities usually carry higher fees, greater risks and steep penalties for withdrawing funds early. Most of these variable or deferred annuity contracts charge from 5% to 10% if my clients wanted to withdraw any funds during the first 2 - 8 years of the annuity.

These variable or deferred

annuities are fine for someone in their 40’s and 50’s. However, if the annuity is not going to mature until you are 110 years old, why buy it????

These annuities are an insurance contract which pays out periodic cash payments on a monthly or quarterly basis. These annuities subject the owner to risks because the value of the underlying investments rise and fall with market conditions. These are long-term investments. If an emergency occurs — and more emergencies seem to occur as we get older — and you need the money in this annuity, then you are going to pay a very heavy penalty for early withdrawal.

One of my clients wants to take out some money to help pay for a down payment on an assisted-living apartment.

According to the terms of his annuity contract, it is going to cost him $1,050.00 to take out $15,000.00.

According to my clients, the bank employees never introduced the person with whom they met as an insurance agent. They said that they did not realize that they had purchased an annuity until they got papers in the mail several weeks after the meeting in the bank.

With today’s low interest rates, it is often very tempting to want to get a higher interest rate on your investments.

Just remember the higher the rate of return usually means a higher risk on the investment.

So, whether you are a senior citizen or not, be careful and cautious when investing.

Q.I was injured on the job and the workers’ compensation carrier paid all my workers’ compensation and medical bills. How do I go about settling with them?

It has always been my advice, when injured on the job, to call a lawyer on day one, as what happens early on can often affect the award or settlement. However, if you’ve gotten this far without a lawyer, there is nothing wrong with calling the insurance company and asking what they are willing to pay. Rest assured it will likely be less than your case is worth, but, as I said earlier, any person has a right to do as they wish, and accept the offer of the insurance company. When an offer is accepted, usually settlement contracts are prepared and there is an appearance before an Arbitrator. Most Arbitrators are very careful to make sure the settlement at least approaches the ballpark of reasonableness, but there are some that figure that if the settlement makes everybody happy, they will approve it as long as it is not ridiculous. However, it should be remembered that the Arbitrator is not an advocate, and Pro Se approval proceedings are very short. Thus the Arbitrator will usually not hear the entire facts of the case, something a lawyer would know and be able to advocate to reach a higher settlement.

If there is a settlement offer, it is still not too late to see an attorney. What our firm does in such situations is that we charge 50% of the excess over the settlement offer, without taking a fee on the offer itself, but the fee will never exceed 20% of the total amount in any event, which is the maximum allowed by law, and a very low amount overall.

Q. My doctor gave me a form called “Liability/Auto Accident Payment Policy” when I went in to treat following an injury I got in an auto accident. I have group health insurance, but he insists that I sign it or he won’t treat me for my injuries. Can he do this? Should I sign it?

A.

DO NOT SIGN IT.

This type of “Policy” is designed purely to benefit the doctor, not you! Most of these so called policies state that the patient is required to provide the name of the liability/automobile insurance company, address, phone number, claims adjuster and claims numbers for all parties involved. It further states that patients not providing the information on liable party (even those with valid health insurance), will be considered self-pay and will be expected to make payments each time they are seen by the physicians until the information is complete. The doctors will not bill the patient’s group insurance. In other words, no treatment if you refuse to be bullied by the doctor!

So, what does this mean to you the patient?

It means that the doctor wants to get paid the maximum amount possible and at your expense! Doctors made contractual agreements with group health insurance companies and Medicare to receive a certain amount of compensation for treatment. The doctor may bill a higher amount, but in exchange for using the

health insurance, he is guaranteed to receive the negotiated payment from the insurance company.

The “Policy” you were presented with is the doctor’s attempt to bypass this agreement with the health insurance company. Unlike health insurance with its negotiated amounts, MedPay pays 100% of the doctor’s bill. So, the doctor gets paid more. That sounds great to the doctor. Unfortunately, for you, the patient, it is horrible!

While no one begrudges the doctor getting paid for services provided, this system can financially harm you, the patient. The problem is that in many cases the amount of insurance may be too low to cover the cost of treatment (for example, if you have to go to the hospital via ambulance and end up staying there for a few days, your bills may exceed $30,000. If the person who hit you only had $20,000 in coverage, there will not be enough money to pay everyone for your treatment!) Additionally, some cases do not settle for enough money to pay everyone. If the doctor never submitted the bills to your insurance company, or did not submit it in a timely manner (most health insurance companies do not accept untimely submissions and a trial or settlement can take years to occur) the time frame to file will have expired before your case settles. This means, you- as the patient- could be responsible for thousands of dollars worth of bills because the doctor wanted to get paid more than your health insurance would have paid the doctor and put your financial interests behind his/hers! Now you are not only the victim of an auto accident, but you have to pay for it too!

OBITUARIES DOMINIC DANIELS, JR. Dominic Daniels Jr. “Junior”, age 75, of Lockport, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 16, 2014 at home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Joliet, was a lifelong Lockport resident.

He was employed as a laborer for Local #75 for many years, retired as a maintenance worker at Providence Catholic High School and retired in 2006 from the Diocese of Joliet.

A lifelong Boston Red Sox and Detroit Lions fan. His life dream was fulfilled when his entire family vacationed together in 2013 in Jackson Hole and Medicine Bow in Wyoming, where his favorite John Wayne and western movies were filmed.

Preceded in death by a son, Kenny Daniels (2011); his parents, Dominic and Mary (Panepinto) Daniels; and a brother, Phil Daniels.

Survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Marge (Hasse); his two devoted children, Mike Daniels and Traci (Dale) Sirek; three cherished grandchildren who always brought him great joy and happiness, Keaton, Logan and McKenna Sirek; a brother, Joseph (Betty) Daniels; and a sister, JoAnn (ken) Onyschuk.

Numerous nieces, nephews and many friends also survive.

Dominic will be deeply missed, especially the smile he always had on his face and the twinkle in his eyes. Rest in Peace, you have earned it, after your long and courageous battle with cancer.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Cardinal Francis George, who informed parishioners earlier this month that his cancer had returned, may be released from the hospital soon after being admitted last week for treatment of dehydration and flu-like symptoms, the Archdiocese of Chicago said Tuesday.

George’s flu symptoms started earlier last week while he was keeping to his regular schedule. He’d gone to the hospital Friday for a

scheduled check on his chemotherapy treatment, and doctors decided to keep him there. He’s being treated at Loyola University Medical Center in suburban Maywood, where he’s receiving an antibiotic and intravenous fluids.

“Cardinal George is expected to be released from the hospital later this week,” Archdiocese spokeswoman Susan Burritt said in a statement released Tuesday morning. “He asks that people continue to pray for him, as he

continues to keep people in his prayers.”

The 77-year-old, the spiritual leader of the archdiocese’s more than 2 million Roman Catholics, recently started another round of chemotherapy to address signs of cancer returning to the area around his right kidney.

He survived bladder cancer eight years ago and was diagnosed with urothelial cancer in August 2012. Chemotherapy then appeared to work and the cancer was dormant for more than a year.

Police say the University Park man is charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery, fleeing police and being a fugitive.

Felton was arrested late Sunday, hours after his car crashed in Chicago following a chase from a nearby suburb.

The chase injured four people, although none of their injuries were life-threatening.

Felton also is wanted in connection with a murder earlier this month in Hampton, Ga., about 30 miles from Atlanta.

Police say Felton was armed with knives.

CHAMPAIGN – Public health officials in Champaign are hoping to convince landlords to ban smoking in apartments.

The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District officials said that making apartments smoke free would improve the health of residents who can be exposed to secondhand smoke from their neighbors.

Julie Pryde, district administrator, tells the Champaign News-Gazette that the effort comes as the University of Illinois bans smoking on campus.

Health officials say at least 20 area rental companies already ban smoking on their properties and are hoping that other landlords follow suit.

The smoke can waft through ventilation systems, light fixtures, electrical outlets, doorways and windows and can linger in the air for hours.

“It’s a nationwide movement,” said Tara McCauley, a special projects coordinator for the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District.

The public health district is offering landlords information about how to amend leases along with smoke-free signs for their properties.

Obama gives Medal of Honor What if the missing plane is never found? to 24 veterans from 3 wars

By JIM KUHNHENN The Associated Press WASHINGTON – They were heroes who didn’t get their due.

On Tuesday, 24 ethnic or minority U.S. soldiers who performed bravely under fire in three of the nation’s wars finally received the Medal of Honor that the government concluded should have been awarded a long time ago.

The servicemen – Hispanics, Jews and African-Americans – were identified following a congressionally mandated review to ensure that eligible recipients of the country’s highest recognition for valor were not bypassed due to prejudice. Only three of the 24 were alive for President Barack Obama to drape the medals and ribbons around their necks.

“Today we have the chance to set the record straight,”

Obama said. “No nation is perfect, but here in America we confront our imperfections and face a sometimes painful past, including the truth that some of these soldiers fought and died for a country that did not always see them as equal.”

The three surviving recipients – Vietnam veterans Jose Rodela, Melvin Morris and Santiago Erevia – received a prolonged standing ovation at Obama’s side, their faces set in somber acknowledgement of the honor.

Tuesday’s mass ceremony, the largest since World War II, was the result of an Army review conducted under a directive from Congress in the 2002 National Defense Authorization Act. The law required that the record of each Jewish-American and Hispanic-American veteran who received a Service Cross during or after World War II be reviewed for possible up-

grade to the Medal of Honor.

The Pentagon said the Army reviewed the cases of the 6,505 recipients of the Distinguished Service Cross from World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars and found an eligible pool of 600 soldiers who may have been Jewish or Hispanic. The Army also worked with the National Museum of American Jewish Military History, the Jewish War Veterans of the USA and the American GI Forum, the largest Hispanic-American veterans group, to pinpoint potential medal recipients.

During the initial review, investigators found that other minority soldiers who had received the Distinguished Service Cross appeared to meet the criteria for a Medal of Honor. Congress amended the directive to allow those soldiers to be considered for the upgraded honor.

By KRISTEN GELINEAU and NICK PERRY The Associated Press WELLINGTON, New Zealand – The plane must be somewhere. But the same can be said for Amelia Earhart’s.

Ten days after Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappeared with 239 people aboard, an exhaustive international search has produced no sign of the Boeing 777, raising an unsettling question: What if the airplane is never found?

Such an outcome, while considered unlikely by many experts, would certainly torment the families of those missing. It would also flummox the airline industry, which will struggle to learn lessons from the incident if it doesn’t know what happened.

While rare nowadays, history is not short of such mysteries – from the most famous of all, American aviator Earhart, to planes and ships disappearing in the so-called Bermuda Triangle.

“When something like this happens that confounds us, we’re offended by it, and we’re scared by it,” said Ric Gillespie, a former U.S. aviation accident investigator who wrote a book about Earhart’s still-unsolved 1937 disappearance over the Pacific Ocean. “We had the illusion of control and it’s just been shown to us that oh, folks, you know what? A really big airliner can just vanish. And nobody wants to hear that.”

Part of the problem, said Andrew Thomas, the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Transportation Security, is that airline systems are not as sophisticated as many people might think. A case in point, he said, is that airports and airplanes around the world use antiquated radar tracking technology, first developed in the 1950s, rather than modern GPS systems.

A GPS system might not have solved the mystery of Flight 370, which disappeared March 8 while flying from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing. But it would probably have given searchers a better read on the plane’s last known location, Thomas said.

“There are lots of reasons why they haven’t changed, but the major one is cost,” he said.

“The next-generation technology would cost $70 to $80 billion in the U.S.” Experts say the plane’s disappearance will likely put pressure on airlines and governments to improve the way they monitor planes, including handoff procedures between countries. Flight 370 vanished after it signed off with Malaysian air-traffic controllers, and never made contact with their Vietnamese counterparts as it should have.

And if the plane is never found, liability issues will be a huge headache for courts. With no wreckage, it would be difficult to determine whether the airline, manufacturers or other parties should bear the brunt of responsibility.

“The international aviation legal system does not anticipate the complete disappearance of an aircraft,” said Brian Havel, a law professor and director of the International Aviation Law Institute at DePaul University in Chicago.

“We just don’t have the tools for that at present.”

The families of the missing, of course, would face the most painful consequences of a failed search.

“In any kind of death, the most important matter for relatives and loved ones is knowing the context and circumstances,” said Kevin Tso, the chief executive of New Zealand agency Victim Support, which has been counseling family and friends of the two New Zealand passengers aboard the flight.

“When there’s very little information, it’s very difficult.”

Tso said the abundance of speculation about the plane’s fate in the media and elsewhere is not helpful to the families, who may be getting false hope that their loved ones are still alive.

More than two dozen countries are involved in the effort to find Flight 370 and end the uncertainty, with dozens of aircraft and boats searching along a vast arc where investigators believe the plane ended up, judging by signals received by a satellite.

Lerner may have to answer for actions Tight-lipped Lois Lerner may soon have to answer for her actions.

The former IRS official stands accused of targeting conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. After months of proclaiming her innocence while stonewalling investigators by invoking the Fifth Amendment – as recently as March 5 – Lerner “misled Congress about targeting and her own conduct,” according to a report released recently by the House Oversight and Governmental Reform Committee.

Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., said the 141-page report “offers detailed evidence about steps she took to crack down on organizations that exercised their constitutional rights to free political speech.”

Remember, President Obama told the nation earlier this year there was “not even a smidgen of corruption,” during his Super Bowl interview with Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly.

If nothing is going on, why has Lerner kept pleading the Fifth?

Among the findings in the House Oversight report, Lerner: • Wrote emails about ways to strengthen the agency’s scrutiny of Tea Party applicants, despite secrecy laws; • Called for a “multi-tier review,” a scrutiny level that lacked precedent, for Tea Party groups applying for tax-exempt status; • Broke IRS rules by using her personal email account to handle protected taxpayer information; • Expressed concern the Supreme Court ruling leading to the increase of 501(c)(4) tax-exempt groups would hurt Democratic senators seeking re-election in 2012. The IRS was expected to fix the problem, Lerner wrote: “Everyone is up in arms because they don’t like it. The Federal Election Commission can’t do anything about it. They want the IRS to fix the problem.”

Sounds like more than a “smidgen.”

Let that sink in – they were going to use the IRS to help get Democrats elected.

If using the IRS as a partisan political tool isn’t criminal, it should be.

There is no telling what will be unearthed when the IRS finally gets around to turning over Lerner’s emails.

There’s no telling how high this scandal goes.

Presidential libraries have become grandiose SPRINGFIELD – This month, House Speaker Mike Madigan announced legislation to offer money for the construction of a Barack Obama Presidential Library somewhere in Chicago.

Illinois, New York and Hawaii are vying to be the home of the library.

Illinois, of course, is his adoptive state, Hawaii his home state and New York City is where he did his undergraduate studies.

Every president since Herbert Hoover has been the beneficiary of one of these taxpayer-supported institutions run by the National Archives.

But as the decades have marched on, they have progressively become more grandiose.

For example, George W. Bush opened his presidential library last year in Dallas at a cost of $300 million.

Frankly, these “libraries” are becoming costly, self-aggrandizing monuments to already inflated egos.

While they purport to be about

And Madigan wants Illinois to pledge $100 million toward the construction of Obama’s library.

The state can’t pay its bills on time, pensions are grossly underfunded, basic state services are being cut and he wants to spend $100 million to build a shrine to a politician?

Come on, Mike.

Years ago, I visited Lyndon Baines Johnson’s library in Austin, Texas.

The exhibits said little about the man’s flawed foreign policy decisions in Vietnam or the societal problems that have come from his expansion of the welfare state.

Richard Nixon’s library has been criticized for downplaying Watergate.

Bill Clinton’s library barely mentions Monica Lewinsky.

We shouldn’t be surprised. These facilities have increasingly become tabernacles glorifying presidencies rather than merely places of scholarship.

Originally, Dwight Eisenhower envisioned these facilities as mere repositories for the paperwork that accumulates during a presidency.

But they have morphed into something quite different.

The Chicago Tribune reported recently that the Obama Library could cost $500 million.

Yes, you read that right – half a billion dollars.

Plans are already underway to build it – and he’s not even out of office.

By comparison – Abraham Lincoln had been dead about 140 years before a presidential library was opened in his honor.

That should be the model for how all of these libraries are built.

After all, we know any-

one who has been elected president has an aptitude for raising money.

That’s a necessary part of any successful campaign for the White House.

So why not leave it up to retiring politicians to raise the money for their own libraries and leave taxpayers out of the mix?

And let’s close the book on this idea of our cash-strapped

Angels sport improved attitude, influx of young talent

By TIM O’BRIEN Shaw Media Correspondent Joliet Catholic junior Ryann Querio didn’t need a game to see the difference in her team.

Trapped inside while the softball field dries out, Querio could see a complete reversal through the first weeks of practice.

“Last year, we didn’t really click as a team as well as we wanted to,” Querio said. “Everyone played for themselves.

This year, we can already tell that we’re bonding as a team and we get along better. It’s only the first few weeks, but we’re a lot stronger. There’s not a lot of drama.”

Planning to put the memories of last season’s tough 5-22 overall record and 1-15 mark in the East Suburban Catholic Conference behind, Querio and her teammates hope that positive mindset goes a long way, especially in the win column.

Coach Dave Douglas, heading into his 24th season, will count on five returning starters led by Querio, Joliet Catholic’s lone All-Conference player last season.

With an improved attitude and an influx of young talent, Douglas sees the potential for wins.

“It might be kind of crazy, but I think we can have 20 wins,” Douglas said. “I think if we grow and get better, don’t get swamped early with too many losses, don’t get down on ourselves, that can be a definite goal.”

Joliet Catholic’s roster does not feature a single senior.

Querio is a veteran with a year and a half varsity experience since her freshman call-up.

Starting at shortstop, the junior will help stabilize the Angels’ defense up the middle.

“We know with our conference and our schedule it’s going to be tough,” Henderson said. “We know what to expect a little more this year. We’re talking about communicating more. We want to be stronger on the field, and there’s not as much negative this year.”

Throughout the country a week ago, NFL football franchises were busy signing free agents in order to add quality players to their respective teams.

The Jacksonville Jaguars, a team in flux on the offensive side of the ball, were no different, bringing in running back Toby Gerheart and offensive guard Zane Beadles.

That was good news to Dwight graduate Clay Harbor, especially since the tight end already had elected to re-sign with the team, thus avoiding free agency.

“I like the offense here. I think it fit what I do,” Harbor said. “I feel that I have a good role there with the team.”

Harbor signed along with offensive linemen Cameron Bradfield and Sam Young, and the next day, quarterback Chad Henne re-signed with a two-year deal.

“We are pleased to get those three players under contract,” Jaguars general manager David Caldwell said. “All three have experience in our system and will compete on a daily basis.

“Cam Bradfield and Sam Young have the ability to play both tackle and guard positions while Clay Harbor provides us with a receiving threat at the tight end position and is a very good special teams player. Our hopes are that they will continue to provide leadership for our younger players and progress as players.”

A fourth-round draft pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2010, Harbor played three seasons there before being released Aug. 31, right before last season began. He was unemployed for exactly one day, as Jacksonville put in a claim right away.

“I had to pick things up in a hurry last year since I got picked up during Week 1. That’s a really fast turnaround to learn an offense,” Harbor said. “But the coached were patient, which is something I had never experienced before. Even when we started out 0-8, they were that way.

Playing for first-year coach Gus Bradley for the first time, Harbor and the rest of the Jaguars seemed to be learning on the fly under offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch. Harbor caught one pass in the opener – a 28-2 loss to Kansas City – and 12 passes in the first eight games. In their defense, the Jaguars’ 0-8 start is somewhat understandable because six of those losses came against eventual playoff teams.

Harbor said there was a defining moment for him during that bad stretch, coming in a 35-19 loss to Peyton Manning and the Super Bowl-bound Denver Broncos.

“That game was 14-12 at halftime,” he said. “That was one of those points in the season where we knew we were capable of playing better.”

For the season, Harbor caught 24 passes for 292 yards and two touchdowns. He said Fisch used him all over the field from his tight end position in 2013.

“Yeah, I played a lot in the slot when I was in motion as the tight end,” he said. “I would also go from slot out wide to tight end, but I also played a lot on the line as

well.”

Harbor said he got the chance to show that he is more than just a pass-catching tight end in the NFL. “I take a lot of pride in my blocking,” he said. “I think it’s a mindset, and I am always going out to block as hard as I can. I feel like I am improving in that area every week.”

Harbor was injured in the season finale for Jacksonville, breaking his ankle while making a block against the Indianapolis Colts. He had surgery in January and is slowly getting back to action.

“I’m just now getting back to doing the things I need to

be doing,” he said. “But I’ll be ready for camp.”

Harbor said he was aware there was a market for his services in free agency this year but he wanted to stay put – especially when the Jaguars met his price.

“I never got to that point [of free agency] because Jacksonville came up from their original offer,” he said. “I think staying in Jacksonville is going to work out best for me.”

In five years in the NFL, Harbor has caught 71 passes for 713 yards and six touchdowns, and is hoping to add more to his stats line before it’s all said and done.

“I still love the game,” he said. “I’ve played five years and by the time this plays out I’d like to have played another five. Having 10 years in the league would be nice.

That’s what I said I wanted to do when I first came into the league. As long as I stay healthy, I want to play as long as I can.”

Prater captures Division III national title

Plainfield Central graduate reigns at 149 pounds THE HERALD–NEWS ELMHURST – After the final buzzer sounded and Elmhurst College wrestler Ryan Prater realized he had won a NCAA Division III national championship at 149 pounds Saturday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he turned toward his parents in the stands and made a motion of closing a book with his hands.

For Prater, it was the perfect ending to his wrestling career.

“I was signaling that this was the end of this part of my life,” said Prater, a Plainfield Central graduate. “It’s been a great journey and I couldn’t be happier to close my career as a national champion.”

Prater, seeded second at the NCAA Championships, marched to the semifinals Friday with a 14-0 major decision over Cornell’s Trevor Engle followed by a 3-0 win over Delaware Valley’s Vincent Fava.

In the semifinal match Saturday morning, Prater pinned third-seeded Mark Hartenstine of Wilks to reach the final.

Facing top-seeded and top-ranked Bobby Dierna of SUNY-Cortland in the championship match, Prater’s defense helped him early. Dierna nearly had him in a prone position, but Prater countered and was able to draw a stalemate whistle.

“Dierna really frustrated me in the first period, but I felt that I would able to roll around with him on the mat,” he said.

Prater showed his strength in the second period, starting from the top position and turning Dierna’s shoulder to the mat for two points on a near fall. He rode Dierna for the entire period to build up two minutes of riding time and put Dierna in a 3-0 hole.

Prater earned a quick escape in the third period and held Dierna at bay until the closing seconds to secure a 4-2 victory and become the third Bluejay in the past two years to win a national title.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the work that Ryan put in this season,” Elmhurst coach Steve Marianett said. “He easily integrated with this team and despite his background, he never tried to stand out except when it was time to perform on the mat.”

At 25 years old, Prater followed in the footsteps of former All-American Elmhurst wrestlers Dalton Bull-

ard and Mike Benefiel. Both were both former Division I wrestlers at major programs and transferred to Elmhurst after a few years away from the sport. Bullard won a pair of All-America honors in 2012 and 2013 while Benefiel won a national title at 197 pounds last year.

“Coming out of high school as a state champion, I think every wrestler dreams of going to college and winning a national championship,” Prater said. “I was a little bitter with the way things ended for me at Illinois, so I ended up stepping away for about three and a half seasons. But I was able to view the sport from a different angle as a coach while also maturing, as well.

“Watching the success that Dalton and Mike had at Elm-

hurst made me realize that I still had the desire to get back on the mat and compete. I’m grateful for coach Marianetti and the entire Elmhurst coaching staff for helping me fulfill my dream of winning a national championship.”

Prater also had to overcome an injury along the way to the national championship.

He blazed through his first 10 matches of the season before a knee injury put him on the sidelines for almost six weeks.

He returned from the injury and won a CCIW title, an NCAA regional title and now an NCAA national title while finishing with a 20-0 record.

He joins Lockport graduate Jake Oster as Elmhurst’s only undefeated national champions and became the fourth Bluejay to win a national

wrestling title.

“To be able to call myself a national champion is amazing,” Prater said. “But my body is ready for a rest, so I’m happy I could end my career on top.”

Prater’s win helped Elmhurst finish tied for 17th with 22.5 points in the team standings.

Marianetti, who is 4-2 as a coach in national championship matches, pointed out that every wrestler has his own unique journey through his career.

“A wrestler’s journey doesn’t always happen in a straight line,” Marianetti said. “I’m happy that we’ve been able to help Ryan and several others write a happy ending to their wrestling careers.”

According to ESPN Chicago, Bennett declined a pay cut before being released – he took one before last season.

In 2013, Bennett appeared in 15 games with three starts.

He caught 32 passes for 243 yards and four touchdowns, including game-sealing scores in wins over the Steelers and Browns.

In the 15 games he played in 2013, Bennett was on the field for 53.8 percent of the snaps. The Bears’ most commonly used offensive formation had Bennett on the field, and that personnel grouping averaged 5.94 yards a play

with Cutler.

What’s next at the No. 3 receiver spot? Marquess Wilson.

As a rookie, Wilson had two catches in 10 games last season. He will get the first crack. He went to Florida to train with Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery, and the team has high hopes for the youngster.

Newcomer Domenik Hixon, who has plenty of receiver experience, also will factor into the mix. Look for the Bears to address the position with another veteran or in the draft.

Izzy returns: After one season with the division rival Lions, defensive lineman Israel Idonije is coming back to the Bears, the team announced.

In Detroit last season, Idonije appeared in 15 games with zero starts and had seven tackles and 0.5 sacks. That was coming off a 48-tackle, 7.5-sack season with the

Bears in 2012, when Idonije played in 16 games with 11 starts. He signed a one-year deal.

Idonije brings a good veteran presence to the locker room and also has the versatility that general manager Phil Emery is seeking in next year’s defense. Idonije would slide inside on passing downs when with the Bears, and the player who did that last year – Corey Wootton – is a free agent.

The Bears now have Idonije, Trevor Scott and Austen Lane as the veterans who will be competing for roster spots behind newcomers Lamarr Houston and Willie Young at defensive end. David Bass, Cheta Ozougwu and Cornelius Washington are the returning players on the edge.

Flyers edge Blackhawks in OT

By NICK MENTA The Associated Press PHILADELPHIA – Claude Giroux scored at 4:55 of overtime to give the Philadelphia Flyers a 3-2 victory over the Blackhawks on Tuesday.

Scott Hartnell scored twice and Ray Emery made 23 saves for Philadelphia.

Andrew Shaw and Duncan Keith scored and Antti Raanta made 34 saves for Chicago.

Skating down the right wing, Giroux beat Raanta with a wrister to give Philadelphia its third straight win.

The Hawks opened an offense-filled first period with two goals just 3:51 into the game.

The first came when Shaw chipped a loose puck near the crease over Emery – the result of a Brayden Schenn turnover at the other end.

Less than 90 seconds later, Keith, set up by a pass from Jonathan Toews, overpowered Emery with a slap shot from the top of the slot.

After the poor start, the Flyers responded with two goals from Hartnell.

Set up behind the net, Hartnell attempted a pass that caromed off Hawks center Marcus Kruger and found its way into the net off the left pad of Raanta at 5:48.

Then at 16:27, Giroux walked out from behind the Blackhawks’ net and found Hartnell for a one-timer to tie it at 2-2. The goals were Hartnell’s 17th and 18th of the season.

Following the first period, the pace slowed in the second, when neither team scored.

I often feel that way about playwrights who include lots of shouting – they could not think of anything worthwhile to write.

This week we are looking at bidding with weak hands – for example, the gorgeous two-count held by North. After partner opens one no-trump, he must not pass, but must convert the contract to two spades, here via a transfer bid. His hand might be useless in no-trump, but will be worth three or four trump tricks in spades.

After West leads the heart king, how should South plan the play?

Note that North’s having to use a transfer, rather than a natural, drop-dead two-spade response, has the disadvantage of giving the opponents two chances to enter the auction; but it does allow the strong hand to become the declarer.

Trust involves more than knowing passwords Dear Abby: I have been in a relationship for two years. We gave each other our phone passwords as soon as we made it official to avoid keeping things from each other.

One night I had a sudden urge to go through his phone. I had never done it before, and when I looked at his Facebook messages, I saw he had been exchanging inappropriate pictures with someone.

I was shocked and angry, and it almost ended our relationship.

Helpful steps for family and friends of addicts Dear Doctor K: My brother is addicted to alcohol. How can I help him overcome his addiction?

Dear Reader: It is so hard to watch a loved one suffer. And addiction surely causes suffering.

In some ways, the suffering from addiction is worse than from other illnesses.

One reason is that family members and friends often worry that they might have contributed to the addiction. They worry that maybe problems in their relationship with the loved one drove that person to drink. Hard as it may be to accept, you aren’t responsible for your brother’s addiction.

Another cause of suffering is that many people think addiction is just a personal weakness, a lack of willpower. In fact, it is a disease.

Chemicals in your brother’s brain are creating an enormous desire to seek again the pleasure that drinking brings him.

But don’t misunderstand.

When I say addiction is a disease, I’m not saying that the disease is incurable. I’m not saying your brother is trapped and powerless to affect his condition, as he might be if he had a cancer spreading throughout his body. With addiction, a person can overcome the enormous desire they feel. It’s just really, really hard, and most

Behavior change rarely occurs quickly. Most people journey through several distinct phases before attaining their goal. Understanding these phases may help you to know when to step back or step in. I’ve also put an illustration of these stages on my website, AskDoctorK.com.

Precontemplation. There is no thought of changing because the individual does not recognize a problem.

Contemplation. The person recognizes a problem but is ambivalent about change.

Preparation. The person has accepted the idea of making a behavior change and begins looking for ways to accomplish it.

Action. The person takes a definitive step. For example, entering a support group for addiction.

Maintenance. Temptation to return to old habits is inherent in any type of behavior change. With addiction, that’s especially true.

Brain chemicals continue to cause desire for a long time, maybe forever. Recognizing that lapses can

occur and developing strategies ahead of time to get back on track is crucial to quitting successfully.

Relapse and recycle. The person resumes former behaviors.

Although discouraging, don’t view this step as a failure. Relapse can help the person recognize triggers and plan stronger coping strategies.

As someone with a loved one who struggles with addiction, here are some things you can do to help: Speak up. Express your concerns in a caring way.

Don’t make excuses. Don’t make it easier for your brother by lying to protect him from the consequences of his addiction.

Be safe. Don’t put yourself in dangerous situations.

Step back. Try to remain neutral. Don’t argue, lecture, accuse or threaten.

Be positive. Addiction is treatable. Learn about treatment options and discuss them with your brother.

Take action. Consider staging a family meeting or intervention.

Teen should allow father to be happy Dr. Wallace: I’m a 15-year-old girl in the 10th grade. My parents are divorced, and I live with my 42-year-old father. My problem is that he is dating a woman who is only 21 years old and he doesn’t see anything wrong with it.

It’s OK for him, but it’s becoming very embarrassing for me, especially since she looks young enough to go to my high school. If people ask who this “girl” is, I just tell them that she’s my sister. What really bugs me is when I see them holding hands (and even kissing).

I really was thinking about going to live with my mom, but she lives in Ohio and I don’t want to move away from California. Do you think my dad should be dating someone so much younger than he is? – Jessica, Palm Springs, Calif.

Dear Jessica: I can appreciate your feelings and would certainly feel uncomfortable if I were in your shoes. However, that doesn’t mean your father is doing anything wrong. It’s the quality of the relationship he has with the young woman that matters, not their 21-year age difference.

Since you don’t want to move in with Mom, you need to accept the situation and allow your dad to be happy.

However, it’s important that he continue to be a good father to you, giving you support, love, guidance and quality time. If he were failing in his job as a father, that would cause much concern.

Dear Jerry: In an emergency, someone without a credential or degree can be given a temporary teaching credential. In such circumstances, teachers are selected on the basis of their work experience. It appears that your auto shop teacher has the necessary expertise and is completely legal. Not all teachers use the same teaching techniques, but you can learn from all of them.

Dr. Wallace: Our family has been having a friendly debate regarding canned fruits and vegetables compared to frozen. We know that fresh-picked produce would be the best, but if it’s not available, which is better for you? – Sheila, Monroe, La. Dear Sheila: Frozen foods win, hands down.

Canned fruits often have sugar added to “enhance” the flavor, while canned vegetables are loaded with sodium, again to add to the flavor.

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now Don’t let the fact that this is a comedy about kids’ spelling bees turn you off. It’s a movie that’s equally nasty and funny, and though a lot of it is about kids, and one of the lead actors is 9 years old, it’s definitely not for kids.

This is an adult movie all the way, bearing a tonal resemblance to “Bad Santa,” and featuring about as many f-bombs as a typical Tarantino film.

It also has, among other ingredients, plenty of heart, a taste of revenge, the intensity of serious competition, displays of both good and bad sportsmanship and a mystery at its center. The title could refer to both the incredibly tough words that are given to contestants in the many small-town spelling competitions leading up to the big national one. The first word one youngster is assigned is “dactylogram.”

Or it could, and likely does, act as a warning about the freewheeling saltiness of the script. The first of those bad words comes less than a minute in, and many more follow.

This is about Guy Trilby (Jason Bateman), a miserable wretch of a man who’s stuck in a dead-end career of proofreading product warranties, and starts entering spelling bees, in which he’s the oldest contestant by about three decades, in order to ... well, that’s where the complicated, but the smoothly told script leaves you hanging for most of the film. It would have been more of a treat if the payoff was a little stronger, but the trip the film takes in getting there is well worth watching.

The piece of the plotline that I’ve already revealed may sound flimsy and illogical. I mean, how can an adult get away with competing in kids’ spelling bees? But Guy has a technicality on his side, one having to do with the fact that he dropped out of school in the eighth grade, thereby making him eligible. So right away, we get a film full of confused kids who have to sit next to him in auditoriums that are packed with angry parents who believe he’s trying to ruin everything for their kids. We also hear from contest officials who want him gone but realize that he’s gotten around some big loopholes.

Guy’s job has made him familiar with plenty of difficult words, and he’s a damn good speller (his first word is “frabjous”), but he’s got no social graces.

He’s self-centered and he’s not at all concerned about being quietly cruel in equal measure to kids and

adults. But this is a comedy, and it’s mostly fast and funny, both verbally and physically, though it takes a brief dramatic turn near the end.

Bateman, making his directorial debut, brings the film in at a tight 88 minutes, nicely getting himself and his actors into the zippy rhythms of the script by first-time screenwriter Andrew Dodge.

Bateman’s Guy is a man on a mysterious mission, the gist of which he won’t even share with Jenny (Kathryn Hahn), the journalist who’s accompanying him on his cross-country trip from bee to bee. Guy and Jenny don’t really get along too well, but they do take part in one of modern cinema’s strangest fully clothed sex scenes.

Guy also must butt heads with the national spelling bee director Dr. Deagan (a deliciously mean Allison Janney) and the man who (I think) founded this biggest of bees, Dr.

Bowman (Philip Baker Hall). There’s terrific and chaotic chemistry between Bateman and those two actors, but the best parts of the film are when he’s spending time with his most formidable opponent, young Chaitanya (Rohan Chand). Watching them together, you’re kept wondering if they’re bonding or trying to psych each other out. Chand (“Jack and Jill”) plays it in a completely believable manner, coming across as nothing less than a real and very smart 10-year-old who happens to be spirited but lonely, and is in need of a friend. And Bateman, who could easily have been distracted by his directing chores, turns in one of his best performances, keeping it low key, carefully measured and on a remarkably even keel.

It’s a refreshingly original adult film that goes out on a very unexpected note because my, oh my, it sure does have an odd last act.
