JOLIET – A federal jury on Tuesday set the price for Evergreen Terrace at about $15.08 million, close to what the city said it was worth but not enough to put an end to the 10-year legal battle over the low-income housing complex.

Evergreen Terrace has 30 days to appeal. And several City Council members are not convinced yet that Joliet should move ahead with the acquisition.

“I’m very excited about it.

I think it’s a win for Joliet,”

Councilwoman Jan Quillman said about the jury verdict.

But Quillman did not commit to voting for an eventual acquisition.

“We’ve come this far. We just have to see where we go from here,” Quillman said.

The price is less than what some council members expected. There were predictions that a jury might split the wide gap between city and Evergreen Terrace appraisals for the complex and come closer to the middle.

Evergreen Terrace valued the 156-apartment complex at $22.3 million. Joliet attorneys

asked the jury for a price of $14.3 million.

The 12-member jury set the price at $15,077,406 after about three hours of deliberation.

Evidence in the case consisted chiefly of testimony from two appraisers – one from each side.

“Definitely it’s a favorable price,” Councilman John Gerl said after hearing of the verdict.

But Gerl said it was up to Holsten Development, the company hired by Joliet to plan redevelopment for Evergreen Terrace, to provide a plan to finance the acquisition.

State financial problems force court reporter layoffs, furloughs

The state has run out of money to pay court reporters through the budget year, which runs through June 30. On Tuesday, Will County Chief Judge Richard Schoenstedt laid off three part-time court reporters and two court specialists who monitor electronic recording.

The 22 full-time court reporters who remain employed by the state will take two unpaid furlough days each week.

When crafting the budget last year, state lawmakers decided to pay for part of the court reporters program with funds that the state comptroller later determined couldn’t be used for that purpose – leaving them $14.3 million short for the fiscal year.

“It’s important to note the court reporters aren’t an agency of the state that’s looking for more money. We’re asking for what was already appropriated,” Schoenstedt said. “We’ve been asking about [the shortage] since last July. Now, instead of just trying to fix this, they’re trying to solve everybody’s [revenue] problems.”

A state budget shortfall has forced furloughs and layoffs for Will County court reporters. Many civil matters could be delayed, while felony and juvenile cases are required by law to use live court reporters for transcripts. when Schoenstedt met with the staff Monday to announce the cuts.

“We feel professionalism and loyalty to the county and the job, but I don’t know anyone who can donate a month of their time without income,” Danley said.

Nearly half the affected employees have been court reporters for more than 20 years and more than half are considered “head of household,” according

to Danley.

Since state law requires live court reporters in all felony and juvenile cases, Felony Chief Judge Daniel Rozak has begun shifting assignments to handle the caseload. Some court calls have changed to different times and others have been consolidated.

“We have [where] one judge takes two judge’s calls to move things along, but that’s double the work for the court reporter who’s there,” Rozak said.

People being held in jail have the right to go to trial within 120 days, unless their lawyer agrees to a delay. “If that lapses, the defendant walks,” Schoenstedt said.

“While everyone is presumed innocent, bonds are set for a reason. It’s unfair to the entire system if a judge had to decide to give a lower bond just to let [someone] out of custody.”

For civil cases – such as divorce, child custody or small claims – litigants and attorneys can hire their own stenographer or use electronic recordings, which will be transcribed when a live court reporter is available.

“The electronic recording is essentially running unmanned right now. If a judge hit the wrong button, the whole courtroom might be muted, but it’s not being monitored,” Assistant Court Reporter Supervisor Jim Stramaglia said.

“At that point, the council will make a decision,” he said.

Mayor Tom Giarrante and three council members said Tuesday they believed the city should move forward with acquisition.

Calling the price “much less than we anticipated,” Giarrante said, “I am in favor of taking it over.”

lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Brothers Darin and Mario DiBenedetti III remember walking around their grandfather’s basement as young boys – with pairs of ripped-out Italian bread rolls as makeshift shoes.

“I’m thinking ‘Dad, instead of throwing these rolls out or making bread crumbs, why don’t we make shoes out of ’em?’ ” recalled Mario DiBenedetti III, 49, of Joliet, on a recent Friday morning.

“We grew up sleeping on flour sacks and helping our dad out with early morning delivery runs.”

With such stories, it’s easy to see how the art of bread baking runs deep in the DiBenedetti family’s blood – 100 years deep. Milano Bakery, 427 S. Chicago St., is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

For many years, the two brothers’ childhood home was located next to the Chicago Street bakery. The fourth-generation family business has been in Joliet since 1926, but the bakery has been in the family since 1915, beginning with immigrants Mario DiBenedetti Sr., his sister Mary, and brother-in-law Frank Soffianti.

The family business – named after Milan, Italy – has been passed down from one generation to the next, but “nobody was ever given nothing,” Mario DiBenedetti III explained.

“Our father taught us to work hard,” said Mario DiBenedetti III, company president, who oversees the business and planning. His brother Darin is vice president and handles production.

“My dad didn’t turn the bakery over to me. He sold it to me. He taught me how to survive in the baking business,” Mario DiBenedetti III said.

retail shop. In a way, the pair remain a part of the family business.

“That’s my dad, there, with the smile,” Mario DiBenedetti III explained, pointing to the wall behind the pastry counter on Friday morning. “Then

that’s my grandfather there on the mixer.”

‘That’s fourth generation’

The struggles and challenges of running a family business are not taken lightly by Mario DiBenedetti III or his

family. Milano Bakery survived the Great Depression because of his grandfather’s work ethics.

“Put it this way. ... The only two times anyone ever really saw him without his working clothes was his wed-

ding and his funeral. It was my grandpa’s way of doing it,” he said. “The business was a smaller version than it is now.

He worked, he delivered it. He wore many hats.”

Hock gives transportation center update

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – It’s unclear where city officials would find additional funding if the downtown transportation center project costs go much above the newly estimated $46 million price tag.

The estimate – presented to Joliet City Council members during Tuesday night’s meeting – is already above the initial $42 million price tag.

A more expensive scenario could eat into the city’s budget for Union Station renovations, City Manager Jim Hock told council members Tuesday.

There’s also question as to whether the Illinois Department of Transportation – which agreed to chip in $30 million towards the $46 million project – would be willing

to toss in additional funding if costs do indeed go over.

According to budget documents distributed Tuesday night, just under $20 million has been spent so far. But four major components – the train station, new boarding platforms, the bus station and parking lot – remain.

Hock said during the meeting that he is in negotiations with IDOT officials about what a Plan B would look like if project costs are overrun.

“We hope the state will pitch in,” Hock said.

Councilman Jim McFarland previously asked Hock to present year-to-date expenditures and projected costs, saying citizens are questioning how much the city has paid to acquire land for the project and whether contract change orders are pushing costs beyond initial estimates.

“This is poor tracking ... poor planning on the city’s part. We needed to get our arms around the project.

We have cost overruns and we’re going to continue to have cost overruns.”

The project is about 18 months behind schedule. The city has paid $4 million to date for Knight E/A’s design and engineering work. But that figure includes about $1.7 million in additional costs associated with change orders

approved since 2012, McFarland said.

The city’s share of the Joliet Gateway Project is now $9.8 million – about $2.3 million more than first estimated in 2010. Joliet’s share covers engineering, land acquisition and demolition. About $1.6 million of that is earmarked to renovations at the old Union Station.

Councilman Larry Hug suggested that city staff investigate whether the city could pursue federal grant

dollars for the old Union Station, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Place.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway chipped in $2.2 million. Other agencies, including Metra and Pace Suburban Bus Service, also have contributed.

In other news, the city will renewed its contract with Chicago-based Stanard & Associates, which issues exams to potential Joliet Fire Department hires. Exam questions were rumored to be leaked in 2013 but those claims were never substantiated.

The company plans to issue different tests moving forward to be on the safe side.

Councilman Bob O’Dekirk first raised the issue of possible cheating on a test during a mayoral debate earlier this month.

At Tuesday’s board meeting, PMA Financial Network presented a five-year projection of the school district’s finances that outlined steadily increasing revenues, expenses and enrollment. Although the school district has a deficit of about $61,300 for the current fiscal year, it would gain surpluses over the next five years, according to the PMA analysis.

“The district is in basically good financial condition and it’s going to be able to weath-

er whatever the state throws at us, funding-wise,” said Steven Crouse, PMA Financial Network senior financial consultant.

Total revenue for the school district for the current fiscal year, which is roughly $100 million, would increase by about 3 percent next year and then about 2 percent in fiscal 2017, according to PMA. Revenue is projected to reach $110 million in fiscal 2020.

Total expenses, at $100.1 million for fiscal 2015, would increase by only about 1 percent next year and then 2.4 percent for fiscal 2017, according to PMA. Expenses would be about $108.6 million in fiscal 2020.

sumptions that there would be steady overall assessed property value growth over the next several years, climbing enrollment and stable staffing.

The PMA analysis also assumed general state aid revenue would increase over the years even with 89 percent proration. Crouse said GSA revenue is expected to increase because of increasing enrollment and poverty count.

JTHS board members unanimously approved 5 cent increases to lunch and breakfast meals for the next school year. Prices for breakfast and lunch had been increasing by 10 cents since the 201213 school year, according to school records. The price for reduced lunch and breakfast will be at 40 and 30 cents respectively.

Staff requests and course changes

Karla Guseman, JTHS assistant superintendent of educational services, reported to

board members Tuesday of the need for 6.3 full-time employees for the 2015-16 year. She said it would meet the school district’s increasing student enrollment and programming needs.

She also recommended moving courses to other campuses or not running them because of low enrollment. She said a course has low enrollment if it had 20 or fewer students. Some of the courses could be offered in the future if there is more enrollment, she said.

The courses recommended not to run at either West or Central campus include: cooperative education courses, AP computer science, interior design, introduction to technology, adult living, keyboarding and document formatting, electronics and robotics, Western civilization, political science 101, astronomy and officiating.

Minooka high school considers teacher cuts

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – To address an increasing deficit in Minooka Community High School District 111’s budget, the school board is set to consider Thursday cuts in personnel, including teachers, clerical and administrative staff.

Superintendent Jim Blanche said he was unable to give details of the layoffs until the meeting, but the cuts will be across the board.

“We had to come up with close to $1 million in reductions from the general fund,” Blanche said. “Probably 85 percent of our budget is personnel, so where are you going to go to make a million dollars of cuts besides the personnel? ... We have been working with the board for several months now to make changes that are the least disruptive to our students.”

Many students did not take the news of the cuts well. Destiny Staton, a sophomore in teacher Tyler White’s symphonic band class, said White told the class his position was being cut from the music program. She and some friends began an online petition, “Don’t let Minooka shrink the arts department,” which they intend to present Thursday to the school board.

The high school district is operating with an annual deficit. This year, that deficit will be $3.5 million.

The school has implemented other measures to reduce the deficit the past two years, such as a $2.1-million-a-year expenditure reduction plan. An approximate $300,000 in additional savings also are expected this year from reductions already put in place, such as transportation cost reductions and reducing the athletic trainer from full-time to part-time.

The district’s equalized assessed value – which helps determine how much property taxes it will receive – has declined the past few years and is anticipated to continue going down before leveling off. The school board approved a resolution in January to issue $12 million in working cash bonds for a term of three years to meet day-to-day operating expenses.

School Board President Mike Brozovich said it was a difficult decision to cut the positions, but a necessary measure the district must consider to address the dire budget issues.

Foster giving U.S. Senate run consideration U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, has announced he is giving serious consideration to running for U.S. Senate.

Eight injured in crash near Presence Saint Joseph

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Eight people were hospitalized after four vehicles crashed Tuesday afternoon outside Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

None of the injuries were reported to be life-threatening, according to Joliet firefighters. Two other people who were involved in the crash refused medical treatment.

About 1:30 p.m., a silver Toyota, a black Ford, a brown sedan and a Ford ambulance collided at Madison Street and Glenwood Avenue. The ambulance went onto the curb and knocked down a light pole on the southwest corner of the intersection.

Firefighters said the driver of the silver Toyota, which ended up facing west in the

assistant replacement for a salary of $48,872, conditional on testings.

A crash involving two passenger vehicles and an ambulance happened Tuesday at the corner of Glenwood Avenue and Madison Street in Joliet. eastbound lanes of Glenwood, was the only person who had to be extricated from a vehicle.

to scramble to find alternate sources of salt after no bids were received for a supply of rock salt through CMS. Channahon had to pay almost double what it previously paid, at $98.25 a ton, from an outside source, Central Salt.

Previous contracts with CMS were $51.99, $53.71, $59.76, and $57.96 a ton.

With an estimated 500 tons of salt in storage at the end of this season, the board decided to put in a bid for 1,200 tons for next year, hoping the price will be closer to prior years.

CHANNAHON – Channahon residents wanting to operate a bakery or other food operation out of their homes may now do so legally.

Village trustees Monday approved a local “cupcake law,” an ordinance addressing the sale of food products by home kitchen and cottage food operations.

The measure was in response to resident Tracey Wurzinger, a chef for a Naperville establishment who appeared before the board earlier this month requesting the ordinance.

Wurzinger wants to start a small business at her Channahon home, making cakes, cupcakes, cake pops, cookies and other baked goods for sale for parties and other occasions.

The state’s cupcake law, or House Bill 5354, passed into Illinois law in June and allows people to sell food products made in their homes without

acquiring permits, as long as monthly revenue does not exceed $1,000.

With the law, the small businesses don’t have as much regulatory oversight as larger commercial businesses, according to Channahon’s Village Attorney Dave Silverman, and county health department inspections are not necessary.

But local governing bodies must first adopt an ordinance authorizing it.

12 Employee stabbed in cellphone store robbery

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police say an employee was stabbed in the neck when a Joliet cellphone store was robbed Monday.

The 23-year-old victim was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center and his injuries were not considered life-threatening, Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said.

The robbery occurred about 7:41 p.m. at Verizon Wireless, 2941 W. Jefferson St. The employee was working at the back counter and saw people walking near the east side windows.

“Three suspects – two men and one woman – entered the store. One of the men was carrying a knife and yelled ‘Give me everything you’ve got.

Where’s the money?’” Roechner said.

The robbers made the employee lay on the floor and took all the cash from the register, Roechner said.

“As they were leaving, he stabbed the employee in the neck and they ran to the west,” Roechner said. The victim ran to the nail salon next door to ask for help, leaving a blood trail between the businesses, according to Roechner.

Both male suspects were wearing black masks over their faces. The first suspect was 6 feet tall, 220 pounds and wearing black clothes. The second man was 5 feet, 11 inches tall, 200 pounds and wore a gray sweatshirt and black pants.

The woman with them covered her face with a black scarf, Roechner said. She was 5 feet, 2 inches tall, 100 pounds and wore a black shirt and black pants.

Lockport Township Fire Chief Dave Skoryi said the incident occurred at 7:41 p.m., when the train stopped near the 1500 block of Broadway.

“A train engineer on the CN line had stepped off her locomotive and was checking something in the dark and stepped right into an open manhole.

Her head was just below the top and coworkers could not pull her out due to her being knee deep in muck,” Skoryi said.

Fire companies arrived on the old Sheffield Steel property and saw the locomotive to the north, Skoryi said. Crews were redeployed to the Seeler Industries property for closer access and set up to perform a confined space rescue.

“A medical helicopter was immediately placed on standby, not knowing what this may turn into,” Skoryi said.

Firefighters rigged a quick sling and lifted the woman safely from the sewer. She was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

What is my best option for protecting my other assets from a lawsuit?

A: The best“front-line”defense against lawsuits is adequate liability insurance coverage. Often, the cost of expanding liability coverage is inexpensive, from a dollar-for-dollar benefit standpoint.

Umbrella coverage, or other insurance coverage, is necessary in order to provide a source for defending against all lawsuits, especially those that may have little or no merit.

Redundancy does not exist in the area of asset protection planning, so we often recommend to clients, especially those who own investment properties, that they consider transferring their real estate to a Limited Liability Company (LLC). Single-member LLCs are treated

as“sole proprietorships”from a tax standpoint, yet provide considerable protection from lawsuit. Multi-member LLCs are generally taxed as a partnership, permitting simpler pass-through taxation to the owners, while at the same time providing the owners with the liability protection of a corporation. LLCs provide, in the event of a lawsuit, a“firewall” between the business assets held in the LLC, and the owner’s individual, nonbusiness assets.

While in the past the use of an LLC for each separate investment property was often cost prohibitive, Illinois recently amended the Limited Liability Company Act to permit the Series LLC. Series LLCs provide the benefit of multiple LLC protection, with reduced filing and fees with the State of Illinois adno=0316995

You need a healthcare power of attorney when a serious illness or accident prevents you from being able to make decisions concerning your medical treatment and making end-of-life decisions.

Your current power of

attorney for healthcare is probably still valid. But if you execute a power of attorney for healthcare after January 1, 2015, you will have to use the new form. You can find it by “Googling” Illinois Public Act 98-1113.

The Small Estate Affidavit form has also been significantly revised. A Small Estate Affidavit can be used to distribute a deceased person’s estate if the value is under $100,000.00. “Estate” means real and personal property of the deceased person that are in the deceased person’s name, only, at the time of his or her death – no named beneficiary, no surviving joint tenant, no person named to “pay or transfer on death”.

This new form can be found at Illinois Public Act 98-836.

The third new law that is of interest to us elder law attorneys is Illinois Public Act 98-1093. It provides that if a “caregiver” (or a caregiver’s spouse, cohabitant child or employer) receives $20,000.00 or more from the person being cared for, on or after that person’s death, it is presumptively void. This law exempts the family members of the person receiving assistance.

Too often there have been instances where the caregiver has used undue influence to weedle gifts from a frail elderly person.

A: The Governor has appointed Joanne Fratianni as Chairman of the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission. While up to now there had been much doom and gloom amongst lawyers who represent injured workers, all people I have spoken to from all aspects of workers’ compensation, claimant’s attorneys, employer’s attorneys, insurance people and arbitrators, all agree that this a superb appointment. Being chairman of the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission is one of the most difficult jobs in the state government.

The system is set up naturally to represent competing interests, those of employees, unions, businesses, insurance companies, government and the public. The chairman has to administer the work of the commissioners and the arbitrators. The commission panels in and of themselves represent competing interests, since each of the three panels, composed of three members each, must have one representative of business, one of labor, and a neutral or public sector member, which is the most important position since two votes are needed to make a final decision. The chairman must also handle all the personnel decisions of the commission, which consists of 9 commissioners, about 30 arbitrators, and a

large amount of staff. Chairman Fratianni has a background as an arbitrator and a commissioner, and is known as honest, straight forward, and no-nonsense, but, most importantly, knowns that the system works, how it works, and believes in it. I congratulate her and wish her all the success in the world.

The Governor has also appointed a relatively new sitting arbitrator to be a commissioner. He will be the neutral commissioner, and comes from a defense background, which is always a concern. However, I have many friends on the defense side and I have found that once they are the deciding officer, such as an arbitrator or commissioner, they adapt and go to the middle. It is our hope that will be true of our newest Commissioner, who I congratulate as well.

Finally, the Senate has started holding hearings on why the cuts implemented in 2011 have resulted in only limited savings to the employers. It was expected that insurance rates would go down commensurate with the cuts. The claim has been made the current problem with Illinois Workers’ Compensation is that the insurance companies are not passing these cuts on to their customers, but are keeping all the additional profits which resulted from the cuts. We will stay tuned to see what the Senate Committee finds. adno=0316992

Q. I was hurt in an auto accident that wasn’t my fault. I need physical therapy. My health insurance doesn’t cover the therapist I want to go to. Can I have them bill the other driver’s auto insurance?

A. No.Auto insurance is not the equivalent of health insurance.

It does not provide a “pay as you go” type of coverage. Payment, if any, only occurs after there is a settlement or a verdict. Even then, the payment is in a lump sum form and not as individual medical payments. This is because, even though you believe the other driver is at fault, there is no legal determination of that fault until a verdict. Even in a settlement the language usually reflects the settlement is a compromise of a ”questionable claim and [defendant] does not admit fault but is paying as a compromise” or similar type language.

What you may be thinking of is something called Medical Payment Coverage or “med pay”. That is insurance coverage

provided for a certain dollar amount (usually $1,000 or $5,000) for medical bills, regardless of fault. This allows you to seek some treatment without worrying about health insurance coverage.

If your therapy costs will be under that amount, you can submit the bills to the insurance company under the med pay policy provisions up to the full amount of that coverage. Once you reach the limit (regardless of whether you are finished with treatment) the policy is exhausted and no further payments are made.

However, if the therapy will likely exceed that amount, you will need to submit the bills to your own health insurance (or pay the bill out of pocket). If your health insurance does not cover that particular therapist you have only limited choices: (1) pay the therapist out of your own pocket (keeping the bills to support your claim for a settlement or verdict); (2) choose a therapist covered by your health insurance company; or (3) talk to the therapist you want to use and ask him/her to contact your health insurance to maybe get the needed coverage. adno=0316993

Filing a FOIA with the Will County Clerk’s Office Schultz Voots said her office expedites the process when possible.

“Most of the time, everybody wants everything right now,” Schultz Voots said.

Voter history and other public records are available at the county clerk’s office and can be accessed thanks to the Illinois Freedom of Information Act – a state law that essentially states taxpayers have the right to inspect public records.

“Most of the time, during an election, they want the voting history of how people voted ... so they want to see if they were a Republican, Democrat or how many elections they voted,” Schultz Voots said.

“That information is easily

accessible from our database.”

As allowed by state law, local governments, including the Will County Clerk’s Office, have up to five business days to respond to comply with or deny a FOIA request. It helps when requesters are specific about what documents they seek, Schultz said.

“I always say, the more you give us, the better off it is. We can get it to you quicker,” she said.

Born: April 24, 1967; in Chicago, IL Died: March 10, 2015; in Jacksonville, FL Amy Elizabeth Berger, Ed.D, was born April 24, 1967, in Chicago. Due to complications after two recent emergency surgeries at Baptist Medical South Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, Amy’s beautiful spirit left this earth on March 10, 2015.

Her family moved to Wilmington and she began kindergarten in Wilmington schools, graduating from Wilmington High School in 1985. She continued her education at U of I Champaign and U of I Chicago while working as a reservationist at TWA, which offered her and her family wonderful travel opportunities.

During these years she was also a primary caregiver for her maternal grandmother. After teaching in the Los Angeles school district, she taught a variety of computer classes at San Diego State University for eleven years.

She continued her education at Pepperdine University, earning a

sity, a member of AAUW, a member of First Presbyterian Church where she was an Elder, a life member of Presbyterian Women, and active in JACOB. She was also active in the Joliet Central Band Parents Association in the mid and late 1970’s, having served as president.

She retired in 1995, after over thirty-two years of teaching Kindergarten for LaGrange Grade Schools, Laraway Grade School, and for Joliet Grade School District 86, where she taught at Lincoln, Sheridan, and Pershing Grade Schools.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her brother, John Haag; sister, Ethel Wilcox; and ex-husband, Bertil Danielson.

She is survived by her children, Michael Danielson, Scott Danielson (Michelle) and Lisa Danielson; five granddaughters, Sarah, Allison, Jessica, ZiYan, and YuanYuan Danielson; in addition to nephews, Jack Haag (Marj), Thomas Haag (Lori); nieces, Christie Lamm (James) and Susanne Haag; great nieces, Alysson and Krissy Haag, Michelle Lamm and great nephews, Erik Lamm and John Haag; and brothers-in-law, Archie Wilcox and Donald Danielson (Ceil).

She was also a very special aunt to Paul Danielson (Dawn) and Chad Danielson (Theresa); and a special friend to Kay Jacobs.

The family wishes to thank Deanna Allen, who was with Dorothy in various roles for the majority of her journey with Lewy-Body Dementia.

Her dedication to Dorothy’s welfare was simply excellent! We would also like to thank Janet Harris, John Phillips, Jackson Whitman, Nick McGrath, Michael Ramirez, Chris Thomas, Moriah Stiles, and granddaughters Allison and Jessica Danielson- collectively known as “the mommy sitters” - for giving such wonderful and compassionate care to Dorothy, as she made this journey for many years battling her illness. We were so blessed for their dedication and amazing talents.

CHARLES J. GRAHAM Charles J. Graham, age 88, passed away Saturday, March 14, 2015, at Joliet Area Community Hospice after a short battle with cancer.

Born in Joliet to the late Charles J. Sr. and Marguerite (Horrigan) Graham, a lifelong resident.

Survived by his son, Kevin Graham of Joliet; nieces, Sara (Sally) Niedrich, Jean Bagel and Jane Crnkovic; and nephews, John Graham and Jim Graham.

Preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Marjorie A. (nee Tynon) Graham who recently lost her own short battle with cancer January 1st; brother, John Graham; and nephew, Scott Graham.

Chuck, as he was known to his friends, went to St. Raymond grade school and graduated from Joliet Catholic High School. He went on to the University of New Mexico and finished his degree at the University of Illinois. A U.S. Army veteran serving two tours of duty during WWII and the Korean War. Formerly employed by the City of Joliet in the engineering department, he also served at the Joliet Arsenal as a technical illustrator, Chanute Air Force Base, and the U.S. Great Lakes Navel Training as an as-built draftsman.

Chuck was a talented and accomplished painter, loved photography and travel. He and his loving wife made many trips around America covering almost all 50 states and abroad traveling to over five continents. He even parasailed in Mexico at the ripe age of 80. He would edit his travel videos and his wife Marge would narrate them for Joliet Volunteer Community Television Channel 6 where he volunteered as a cameraman and editor. He was a feature writer for the Herald News Common Sense column for a number of years.

A man of eclectic interests, he had a great sense of fun and found creative ways to contribute to art, history

and community. As a younger man he loved odd cars, owning a series of Volkswagen Beetles, and occasionally acquiring and repairing other automotive oddities, such as a rare Isetta, with a door that passengers entered from the vehicle’s front. He enjoyed going to car shows and until this year never missed the Chicago Auto Show.

He was an expert in WWII aircraft and loved anything aeronautical. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, attended many air shows including the Oshkosh, Wisconsin air show, and never passed up an opportunity to take a ride in a small aircraft or helicopter. He was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church where he served as a Eucharistic minister, an usher, and a member of the Paulite’s group.

State high court invites Rauner to observe arguments

Grant freeze puts hold on Danville dam removal funds

DANVILLE – A freeze on Illinois grants for park and forest preserve districts is holding up funding for the removal of two dams in Danville that officials said pose safety concerns.

Gov. Bruce Rauner suspended the grants indefinitely last week, as the state faces an estimated budget deficit of $1.6 billion.

The News-Gazette said multiple drownings have occurred at the dams in the last 20 years.

The last was in 2003, when 24-year-old University of Illinois graduate Sandra Barnett drowned. She was canoeing and went over the dam, and rescuers couldn’t get to the dam in time. Three other canoers were saved.

The dams slow water flow and create wide, deep pools of

water. One is on the Vermilion River, and the other is on the North Fork in Ellsworth Park.

Danville City Council passed a measure last year to remove the dams, with the state covering the cost estimated at more than $2.5 million. Plans called for their removal this year.

Danville Mayor Scott Eisenhauer said he’s worried the city could be held responsible if another accident happens at the dams. He said the city made “a very compelling argument” about the need to remove the dams in material sent to Rauner’s office.

Metro joblessness rates fell statewide in January

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Employment Security said unemployment dropped in January in each of the 14 metro areas the agency tracks in its monthly report.

The department said Tuesday the biggest improvements came in Danville, Decatur and Rockford. All three historically manufacturing-dependent areas were struggling a year earlier with double-digit unemployment, and all three saw drops of more than 3 percentage points.

Unemployment in the Chicago area fell 2 percentage points to 6.8 percent.

The Bloomington area had the state’s lowest unemployment at 5.4 percent. That was down from 6.7 percent in January 2014.

The department said last week that the statewide jobless rate continued to fall and reached 6.1 percent in January.

Exelon, Pepco reach a settlement over Maryland merger

Exelon and Pepco Holdings said Tuesday that they agreed on a settlement with two counties in Maryland over the proposed merger of the two power companies.

Chicago-based Exelon announced in April 2014 it was buying Washington, D.C.-based Pepco Holdings Inc. for $6.83 billion to create a large electric and gas utility in the Mid-Atlantic region, serving about 10 million customers. The deal faces regulatory hurdles.

The settlement with Montgomery and Prince George’s counties includes designating a portion of a proposed $94.4 million customer investment fund to provide $36.8 million in bill credits, or about $50 per Pepco and Delmarva Power customers in Maryland. The remainder of $57.6 million will go toward funding energy-efficiency programs.

Jack was a Union Rep. for Sheet Metal Workers #265, he retired after 25 years from Arco Supply in Aurora working in the warehouse as a fork lift driver. He most recently worked for Lincoln-Way Area Special Ed District #843. Jack was a long time member of St. Jude Church, New Lenox.

He was a “Jack of all trades”, he could fix anything, always had a plan or a project going, and could rarely be found sitting still. He was a Bears fan and enjoyed going to some White Sox games with his son, John. Jack enjoyed almost anything life had to offer but found the most joy in spending time with his family, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be

missed.

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Supreme court was holding a special evening session of oral arguments to give Gov. Bruce Rauner and state lawmakers a chance to see the justices in action.

The case being examined at the 6:30 p.m. Tuesday session in Springfield involves an amendment to the Illinois Juvenile Court Act. The amendment, passed by the Legislature, allowed 18-year-olds to be tried in juvenile court.

Chief Justice Rita Garman said the session is an opportunity for lawmakers and state leaders to observe firsthand the interaction of the three branches of government and the operations of checks and balances in the system.

Court officials said they believe the last time an evening session was held at the Illinois Supreme Court building in Springfield was over a century ago.

SPRINGFIELD – Some Illinois lawmakers are seeking to require annual inspections for all the state’s abortion clinics, more than three years after officials took steps to reinforce the system following a report

by The Associated Press that some facilities had gone 15 years without an inspection.

The six Republicans and one Democrat who have introduced a bill requiring the annual inspections said it would keep women safer, but critics allege it is a veiled effort to restrict women’s access to the procedure. State officials said they now carry out inspections of most clinics every three or four years, which they insist is enough.

In February, the Republican-led Missouri House passed a similar bill, which would require an annual check of surgical centers that perform a certain number or type of abortions. But the chances of passage appear slimmer in Illinois, where Democrats control both chambers of the Legislature and Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner has said he wants to steer clear of social issues while focusing on the state budget crisis.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Letter to White House tests known by his name and a measure enacted to crack down on tentatively for cyanide WASHINGTON – The Secret Service said an envelope addressed to the White House has tentatively tested positive for cyanide.

The letter was received at an off-site mail screening facility Monday. Initial biological testing was negative.

The agency said additional testing Tuesday returned a “presumptive positive” for cyanide.

The sample was taken to another facility for further testing.

The Secret Service is responsible for President Barack Obama’s security.

The agency said the investigation into the letter continues and it would have no additional comment on the matter.

Police searching home of millionaire Robert Durst

By JUAN A. LOZANO The Associated Press HOUSTON – Police on Tuesday were searching the Houston home of millionaire Robert Durst after his arrest over the weekend in New Orleans.

Durst, 71, is charged with murder in a Los Angeles killing 15 years ago, and has been suspected – but never charged – in the disappearance of his first wife in New York.

In 2003, he was acquitted of murder in a dismemberment death in Texas.

On Tuesday afternoon, a marked Houston police car and three unmarked cars were in front of a 17-story building in Houston’s Rice Village neighborhood where Durst has three condominiums. At least five plainclothes officers were working inside the guarded building. Two of the officers were seen walking to a nearby unmarked car, retrieving a small bag from the trunk and returning to the building.

torney’s office spokesman Jeff McShan said the Los Angeles Police Department contacted his office last week. McShan would not elaborate on what was discussed and referred questions to the LAPD. Sgt. Barry Montgomery, an LAPD spokesman, said the department is not commenting on the case until Durst is in their custody.

“This is an investigation that’s being handled by multi-jurisdictions,” Montgomery said. “At this juncture, the only thing the LAPD is doing is waiting for the extradition. We are just waiting on him to make it into our custody.”

In a documentary that just wrapped up about Durst’s troubled life, he mumbled about how he “killed them all,” providing a dramatic kick to the end of the series.

But a law enforcement official said his arrest on the murder charge was based on words he wrote.

Analysis linked a letter Durst wrote to his friend, Susan Berman, a year before her

killing with one that pointed police to her body, and that was the key new evidence in the long-dormant investigation into the 2000 killing, the official not authorized to speak publicly told The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.

He waived extradition in New Orleans, but authorities there charged him late Monday with being a felon in possession of a gun and with having marijuana. Assistant District Mark Burton said they found more than a quarter-pound of pot and a revolver in his hotel room when he was arrested.

It was not clear how soon he would be returned to California.

Attorney Dick DeGuerin said he wants a hearing in Louisiana as soon as possible to contest the arrest. “The warrant we believe is based on a television show and not on actual fact,” he said. “We want a hearing as quickly as possible so Mr. Durst can go to California and face trial as quickly as possible.”

The office-redecoration expenses prompted an ethics complaint from a private Washington watchdog group and set off a flurry of reporting on Schock’s spending and reliance on political donors.

An AP examination of Schock’s frequent flights around his central Illinois district found that he spent more than $40,000 from his House expenses for travel on planes owned by a group of donors.

AP also used metadata associ-

ated with Schock’s Instagram account to track his reliance on donor flights and his attendance at concerts and festivals where a Super PAC supporting his campaign spent more than $24,000 for tickets.

A separate AP story detailed how Schock has relied on several political donors for almost all of the Peoria-based real estate deals that have provided much of his personal wealth, estimated at about $1.4 million in 2013.

Even so, until last week, Schock thought he could weather the controversy and had turned to a team of communications strategists and lawyers to head off any more embarrassments.

But then The Chicago SunTimes and Politico began questioning discrepancies between mileage reimbursements that Schock was paid and the number of miles on his SUV when he sold it. The gap suggested Schock was billing taxpayers and his campaign for miles that were never driven.

Schock and his advisers realized they had a situation that could not be called an error or misunderstanding, according to a Schock adviser who demanded anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. It proved to be the deciding factor pushing Schock to leave Congress. On Tuesday, a spokesman said Schock had repaid all mileage expenses incurred since he joined Congress, “out of an abundance of caution.”

WASHINGTON – Illinois Rep. Aaron Schock abruptly resigned Tuesday following a monthlong cascade of revelations about his business deals and lavish spending on everything from overseas travel to office decor in the style of “Downton Abbey.”

“I do this with a heavy heart,” Schock said in a statement. He said he had given the people of his Peoria-area district his all since his election in 2008, “but the constant questions over the last six weeks have proven a great distraction that has made it too difficult for me to serve the people of the 18th District with the high standards that they deserve and which I have set for myself.”

Schock, 33, a young, media-savvy Republican, had drawn attention for his physical fitness and fundraising prowess. But more recently he has come under scrutiny for extravagant spending, payments to donors for flights on private jets and improperly categorized expenses.

The questions raised have included Associated Press investigations of his real estate transactions, air travel and Instagram use. On Monday, the AP confirmed that the Office of Congressional Ethics had reached out to Schock’s associates as it apparently began an investigation.

In a statement, House Speaker John Boehner said: “With this decision, Rep. Schock has put the best inter-

ests of his constituents and the House first. I appreciate Aaron’s years of service, and I wish him well in the future.”

Schock did not inform any House leaders before making his decision, and the announcement took Republicans by surprise. Although the questions around his spending had begun to attract attention and raise concerns, he was not yet facing concerted public pressure from party members to step down.

He is the second House Republican to give up his seat this year under unfavorable circumstances. Michael Grimm, who pleaded guilty on tax evasion charges, resigned his New York seat in early January.

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner will have five days from the March 31 effective date of Schock’s resignation to schedule a special election, which must be held within 120 days of the vacancy.

Schock, an energetic real estate investor who catapulted from the Illinois Legislature to win a congressional seat at the age of 26, touted his status as the House’s first millennial lawmaker. He posed shirtless for Men’s Health magazine to promote fitness, and used Instagram the way older politicians rely on press releases, photo bombing his growing fan base from London to the Florida beach scene. He was an in-demand fundraising force and visited more than 40 congressional districts in the lead-up to November’s elections.

County office sponsors Narcan training

JOLIET – On March 12, the Will County Sheriff’s Department joined other law enforcement agencies across the county in the Will County Narcan Distribution Program, initiated by County Executive Larry Walsh’s office.

This antidote has successfully reversed the effects of a heroin overdose, saving lives, according to a news release.

The sheriff’s department trained seven of its deputies, who will train the department’s remaining 164 sworn officers, according to the release. In addition to patrol officers, deputies from the jail and

courthouse were also trained.

Officers from Elwood, Shorewood, Romeoville, Channahon, Manhattan, New Lenox and Wilmington also participated.

Through a “train the trainer” format, 74 officers from 11 agencies in Will County have received this training prior to Thursday’s session. Those agencies are Bolingbrook, Tinley Park, Frankfort, Crete, Steger, Peotone, Lockport, University Park, Richton Park, Joliet Junior College and Lewis University.

The county is working with Dr. Kathleen Burke of Strategic Prevention to conduct this training.

He takes pride in the family business and the hard work that comes with it. He enjoys knowing his children pitch in, too.

“That’s fourth generation right there,” Darin DiBenedetti said, pointing to his 20-year-old daughter Antoinette as she walked past.

Further on down the family line are Darin DiBenedetti’s four other children: Drake, Victoria, Luke and Anastacia – ages 19 to 14. There’s also Mario DiBenedetti’s two children: 21-year-old Gina and 17-year-old Samantha.

“They all help out,” Mario DiBenedetti III said. “Nothing’s going to be given to them. Like I keep saying, it’s blood, sweat and tears. That’s what I’m talking about. It’s about working hard.”

He joked he can’t quite put his finger on “why he sticks around.” But he said he feels like part of the DiBenedetti family.

‘A household name in Joliet’

The Milano name is familiar in the Joliet area. The business’ retail shop offers bread, pastries, cookies and cakes, but also offers wholesale bread to Joliet grocery stories and restaurants in the region and other states.

The bakery offers more than 150 types and sizes of Italian bread, ciabatta, focaccia, Pullman loaves, French bread and Kaiser rolls.

Darin DiBenedetti said they strive for a “clean label” and simple bread recipes. A few years ago, the family added an artisan bread line into the mix.

They’ve also modernized the bread baking process – made possible with a 20,000-square-foot building

addition that included a larger packaging area and stonelined, high-efficiency ovens.

But the bread baking takes time, he said.

“The slower you make the bread, the better it’s going to taste,” Darin DiBenedetti said.

The build-out and new technology was necessary a few years ago, when the company realized loyal customers weren’t leaving anytime soon and the customer base grew.

“In the late 1980s, it would take us three hours to bake 13 racks of bread,” DiBenedetti said. “Now, we do it in about 45 minutes.”

Working in a family business together is about having a common goal: Surviving and loving what you do, Darin DiBenedetti said. It’s also about communication and taking care of the business and family.

“We all have different personalities and strong points.

You hear all the time about the baker who starts up a small bakery business. The barber who runs a small barber shop business, but they didn’t know how to run it,” Darin DiBenedetti said. “You need an entrepreneur. That’s my brother. You need the technician.

That’s me. You also need the business man, and I think we all encompass that.”

The city’s attorney may have given an idea of the costs of owning Evergreen Terrace when making closing arguments to the jury Tuesday.

James Figliulo asked the jury to consider a history of disrepair, blight and crime at Evergreen Terrace in asking the jury to consider the costs of owning it before setting the price.

“You cannot have conditions that have been pervasive at this property. You have to maintain the property,” Figliulo said.

Make it a habit; please help litter to melt away Springlike temperatures have taken a big bite out of the snow cover in Will and Grundy counties.

As snow melts away, unfortunately, a winter’s worth of litter is revealed.

Trash tossed out of cars is visible along the streets.

Cups and wrappers dropped by pedestrians lie along sidewalks.

Couch cushions and tires that fell out of – or were tossed from – pickups can be seen along roadsides.

Most people know that littering is wrong. Most people might not know littering has been against state law only since the 1970s.

The Illinois Litter Control Act became law Jan. 1, 1974.

The act described the state’s littering problem, set forth prohibitions and penalties, and called for strict enforcement.

Why was Illinois afflicted by littering in the 1970s?

Because of “rapid population growth, the ever-increasing mobility of the population and improper and abusive discard habits” of the public.

What’s wrong with littering, anyway?

It’s “detrimental to the welfare of the people of this state.”

And further, “[W]hile there has been a collective failure by government, industry and the public to develop and accomplish effective litter control, there is a need to educate the public with respect to the problem of litter and to provide for strict enforcement of litter control measures.”

Looking at our roadsides, it seems as if things haven’t changed all that much.

The act went on to define litter as “any discarded, used or unconsumed substance or waste.”

That takes in a wide range of stuff, including – according to the act – garbage, trash, refuse, cigarettes, debris, rubbish, grass clippings or other lawn or garden waste, newspapers, magazines, glass, metal, plastic or paper containers or other packaging, construction material, abandoned vehicles, motor vehicle parts, furniture and oil.

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

Wait – we’re not done yet. Also, animal carcasses, any nauseous or offensive matter of any kind, any object likely to injure anyone or create traffic hazards, potentially infectious medical waste, “or anything else of an unsightly or unsanitary nature.”

Basically, anything that’s been discarded, abandoned or disposed of improperly fills the bill.

As of Jan. 1, 2014, cigarette butts were added to the official list of banned litter.

The act prohibits littering on public and private property, whether it’s land or water. It mandates trash receptacles be placed on property, public and private, that is open to the public.

A first-time littering offense is a Class B misdemeanor. Get caught littering a second time, and it’s a Class A misdemeanor. Litter three or more times, and you’ve committed a Class 4 felony.

What about enforcement?

“This Act shall be enforced by all law enforcement officers in their respective jurisdictions, whether employed by the state or by any unit of local government. Prosecutions for violation of this Act shall be conducted by the State attorneys of the several counties and by the Attorney General of this State.”

The law is clear: No littering allowed.

The law is also clear: Anti-littering provisions are to be strictly enforced.

Of course, the problem hasn’t gone away, because some people don’t care enough to reform their littering ways, and police officers can’t be everywhere.

To those for whom littering is a bad habit, we encourage them to break it and adopt better habits. Keep a trash bag in the car and put litter in it for disposal at home. Don’t discard litter while you’re out walking. And if something falls off your truck, turn around and pick it up.

As spring approaches and the last snow disappears, make it a habit to stop carelessly discarding cups, cans, wrappers, bags and so forth. Then, perhaps, we can all enjoy watching the litter problem melt away.

Mom didn’t weep easily.

But that day, her tears were happy ones.

A donor liver had come through for my brother, Dan, who had been atop the Mayo Clinic’s transplant list for weeks.

For months, I found myself wondering: Will this be the day he dies?

I didn’t want him to die. But I fretted. It’s hard not to. I loved him.

He was my only brother. And I’d never lost someone close to me.

For years, he had suffered from a rare liver disease – primary sclerosing cholangitis. Finally, his liver was giving out. Death was near.

But someone else’s death saved his.

A middle-aged woman in Rochester, Minnesota, died suddenly of a brain aneurysm. Sometime earlier, she’d signed an organ donor card.

That small act saved my brother’s life.

On Father’s Day 2004, he began

his path to recovery. With the gift of a new liver, his yellowing skin returned to a healthy peach color. His weakened body regained energy.

But this isn’t an “and they lived happily after” story. I wish it were.

Cancer began to grow in his transplanted liver, and by December 2005 he was dead.

Still, some woman, whose name we never will know, gave him a year and a half he never would have had.

My brother was not a man prone to much introspection. He was a farmer. Most things were black and white: crop yields, commodity prices, hog weights.

But when it came to the unknown woman who gave a part of herself to him, he became quiet and contemplative.

“I wonder what she was like.

Did she have kids?” he said shortly before he died.

I wondered if her family missed her as much as I would miss Dan. We do know this much about the woman: She cared enough to give.

Next month is organ donor month in Illinois. Please consider being an organ donor.

HINSDALE – This March Madness stuff gets crazier all the time.

But what really matters is that, for the first time, Bolingbrook’s boys basketball team is headed to the state finals.

The Raiders went almost seven minutes without scoring midway through the second half Tuesday night as West Aurora went on a 13-0 run to draw even at 45 with 6:49 remaining.

Before it ended, Bolingbrook needed every bit of several big defensive stops to secure a wild, 50-49 victory in the Class 4A Hinsdale Central Supersectional.

The Raiders advance to face Stevenson at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the semifinals at Carver Arena in Peoria.

“We could have folded, and we didn’t,” Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost said. “Thank goodness were able to get the stops we needed the last couple of minutes. Give our kids credit for that.”

West Aurora (22-9) was playing without point guard Matt Dunn, who missed last week’s sectional games for violation of team rules, and Drake Spears, the sixth man who broke his foot in Friday’s East Aurora Sectional final against Hinsdale Central.

But even more important, the Blackhawks’ big man, 6-foot-6 Illinois State recruit Roland Griffin, was not in uniform. He reportedly was in a fight Tuesday and was suspended.

So West Aurora was giving away size and was without its leading scorer and rebounder, among others. Yet legendary coach Gordie Kerkman’s Blackhawks gave the Raiders (24-6), who have won 18 of the last 19, all they wanted. Kerkman finished his 39th season with 805 career victories.

“We knew coming into this game that it didn’t matter who was wearing their jerseys,” Brost said. “With their program and their history, we knew what we were up against.

“Gordie is one of the best coaches in the country. It’s an honor to go against him.”

“Obviously, we lost quite a player,” Kerkman said of Griffin. “But I wanted our guys to go out, play hard and have fun.

They killed us on the boards and capitalized more on that the first half [which ended with Bolingbrook leading, 30-27].

They didn’t capitalize as much in the second half.”

After West Aurora tied it at 45, Bolingbrook used a favorite

maneuver to regain the lead.

Brodric Thomas grabbed one of his seven rebounds and hit Prentiss Nixon flying to the basket for a layup.

The Blackhawks then misfired from 3-point range. Nixon grabbed the long rebound, turned and beat everyone down the floor for another layup with just under five minutes left for a 49-45 lead.

“Those two layups were important to the team, but they wouldn’t have happened without my teammates,” said Nixon, who scored 15 points on 5-of-14 shooting.

West Aurora did not die, however, as Tommy Koth’s steal and layup made it 49-47 with 3:07 to go. Julian Torres, Bolingbrook’s 6-foot-9 center who finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, made 1 of 2 free throws with 2:44 to go.

That would be Bolingbrook’s final point and the eventual difference.

“My teammates were keeping me up,” said Torres, who hit 5 of 6 shots and 7 of 8 free throws. “I just wanted to win for the team.”

Torres was a key as Bolingbrook went on 11-0 runs in the first and third quarters to open substantial leads, yet the Blackhawks kept coming back.

left. The Blackhawks regained possession after the last of Bolingbrook’s 15 second-half turnovers with 1:29 left.

The Blackhawks ran the clock down to :33 and called timeout. Koth got a look from about 13 feet, but Bolingbrook’s Dimitri Akenten, who had eight rebounds, got a hand on it, and Torres pulled it out of the air. He was fouled with six seconds left, the sixth West Aurora foul of the second half.

Thomas then completed a long pass to Nixon in the frontcourt and he dribbled until being fouled with :03.9 left. He missed the front end of the oneand-one, and the Blackhawks rebounded. Jordan got a look from about 40 feet, but it was too hard.

“It looked like it was going in,” Jordan said. “But it didn’t.”

“It doesn’t matter if you win by one or by 21,” Brost said.

Raiders hope to keep making history

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com HINSDALE – After building up a 13-point lead in the third quarter of Tuesday’s Class 4A Hinsdale Central Supersectional with West Aurora, Bolingbrook’s boys basketball team watched in dismay as the Blackhawks used a 13-0 run to make a game of it again.

While the Raiders were in new territory, making their initial trip to the Elite Eight and trying to reach the Final Four for the first time, West had been in this position often under legendary coach Gordon Kerkman, having claimed five top-three finishes at state.

But while the Blackhawks looked as if they might prevail – overcoming the loss of a key starter before the game added to some recent injuries – Bolingbrook refused to roll over.

That’s not surprising considering that coach Rob Brost’s squad has been on a mission since starting the season with a 6-5 record. Bolingbrook came up with a series of big stops down the stretch Tuesday night and hung on to claim a 50-49 victory after West missed two late shot tries.

The Raiders have won 18 of their last 19 and take a 24-6 record into Friday’s semifinal against Stevenson in Peoria.

The 24 wins ties the school’s win total, which was set by the 1985 team that had been the program’s only previous sectional champion.

This is also just the third Bolingbrook program to advance to the final four in its sport, joining girls basketball (seven appearances) and football (four).

“I’m so proud of these boys,” Brost said. “And of our student body and how they’ve supported us. Most of all, I’m proud to coach these kids, I told them when we started out in Decatur that I loved them, and not because of how they played but because of the people that they are.

“When we were 6-5, anybody could have folded the tent and not trusted the coaches or the players, and we could have easily folded as a group.

But we didn’t do that, and now we’re 24-6 – and we’ll be in Peoria on Friday.”

Julian Torres led all scorers, tossing in 17 points and pulling down 10 rebounds to help the Raiders position themselves for the victory.

“It feels great to be able to make history after being here four years and trusting guys like coach Brost, Prentiss [Nixon] and BT [Brodric Thomas],” Torres said. “We all love the game and we all work hard.”

Things were looking great for Bolingbrook after Torres hit four free throws and a layup, Brodric Thomas followed with a 3-pointer and Prentiss Nixon made a jumper to give their team a 45-32 lead with 3:47 left in the third quarter.

But West Aurora was far from done and tied the score at 45 with 6:49 left. But to the Raiders’ credit, they only allowed two more baskets the rest of the way.

“With the team that we have, we think that anything is possible.”

“When we started out four years ago, we wanted to make school history, and I’m proud to be a part of it,” said Thomas, who added seven points and seven rebounds.

The Raiders moved in front for good at 47-45 with 5:07 left when Nixon made a layup, and then he added another layup a short time later to give his team a four-point lead. West

got to within a point and then missed a pair of winning attempts in the final seconds.

Now Bolingbrook sets its sights on accomplishing more history this weekend in Peoria.

“With the team that we have, we think that anything is possible,” said Nixon, who finished with 15 points. “Our starting players came up with the motto, ‘Why not?’ And we asked, ‘Why can’t it be us?’ In the regional championship, we were down, and people thought we had lost. It’s a great accomplishment to be one of the last four teams.”

“I’m ready for my last crack at winning state. Fourth time is the charm,” Garvey said with a smile. “We know when it comes down to it, the pressure is on, we can perform at our best. I feel confident that whatever we face this year, we will come out on top.”

The strength for the Celtics is a lineup with key returnees in Greenwood (.386, seven home runs, 28 RBIs, 29 runs), Garvey (.426, 16 doubles, 31 RBIs, 24 runs) and junior catcher Jessica Cothern (.488, five home runs, 29 RBIs, 22 runs).

Biesterfeld is looking for some more consistency out of his lineup, not the all-or-nothing scoring that troubled last year’s team at times.

For Greenwood, she’s just hoping to get some pitches to hit. Heading into her fourth varsity season, she’s not exact-

ly an unknown commodity at the plate.

“Be patient [at the plate] and wait for my pitch,” Greenwood said. “That’s a big one, especially since most coaches have seen me since my freshman year. Also, believing in myself, not to get too frustrated. There’s always another at-bat, always another game.”

In the circle will be one of the area’s most talented pitchers, junior Kendal Judge. She finished 16-7 last season with a 1.29 ERA and 245 strikeouts. In two varsity seasons, Judge has 24 wins and 356 strikeouts.

“I’ve been working on hitting my spots and just going after the hitters,” Judge said.

“We want to win as many games as we can, win conference and hopefully make it down to state.”

Now, it’s a matter of putting it all together, game in and game out.

Biesterfeld knows he has the squad to do it.

“They’re anxious to get back one more time to state and really make a run at it,” Biesterfeld said. “It’s exciting to know we have the veterans we do and the leadership and experience they provide. I feel like I can start any nine kids on the team, and we’re going to be pretty tough to beat.”

NEW LENOX – Providence Catholic senior Morgan Greenwood had to stop and think for a second.

Had it really been three years?

Greenwood smiled at the thought that, three years ago, she was one of three freshmen – with Maeve Garvey and Zoe Bruni – on Providence’s softball team that finished third in state.

How time flies.

“It’s flown by insanely fast,” Greenwood said. “It’s hard to believe, three years ago, we went down to state.

The team and I, we’re ready to do some more damage.”

Greenwood, Garvey and Bruni remain and with a core that continued to develop over the last two years, Providence is a team built to make a run at a state championship, with power and contact hitters at the dish and pitching and defense in the field.

Providence coach Jay Biesterfeld isn’t shying away from those lofty goals. As he succinctly states, the Celtics are interested in winning titles.

“We know they have the talent to do it, and our goal is to reach our full potential,” Biesterfeld said. “We believe we have the talent to compete with anyone. Our goal is to win that state title. This year, we’re good enough and not afraid to put that carrot out there.”

Providence is coming off a 2014 campaign in which the Celtics finished with a 21-14 record and a 12-6 mark in the East Suburban Catholic Conference. The season ended in a 4-3 defeat to rival Lockport in a regional final.

For the seniors, they know this is the last chance at another state title, hopefully an improvement on the third-place trophy they helped claim.

Plainfield North poised to win arms race

By DRAKE SKLEBA Shaw Media Correspondent PLAINFIELD – The village of Plainfield provides an abundance of quality high school pitching talent. Unfortunately for the coaches, players and fans at Plainfield South, East and Central, a monopoly has been formed on the north side of town.

Plainfield North coach John Darlington returns his top five pitchers from last season’s 28-9 sectional finalist. Add two highly ranked juniors who haven’t thrown a pitch for the varsity Tigers, and you have one of the deepest pitching staffs in Will County.

Leading the Tigers’ staff is 2014 all-state left-hander Kyle Strepek. He went 9-1 and had an ERA of 0.95. The Illinois-Springfield-bound Strepek can hit, too, holding down the No. 3 spot in the lineup.

The No. 2 starter, St. Xavier-bound right-hander Matt Vanek, returns along with junior right-hander Josh Garner (5-2). Add right-hander Zach Martin, a Notre Dame recruit, and the Tigers possess one of the most dominant rotations in the state. Toss in senior closer Adam Zuk, who was effective in the closer role throughout the Tigers’ 2014 tournament run, and opposing teams will have a difficult time scoring runs against North.

The highly ranked juniors, right-hander Justin Yeager and lefty Tyler Garrity, are hoping to have big years for the Tigers.

“We are really blessed to have so many quality arms returning,” Darlington said.

“It all starts with our leader, senior Kyle Strepek. Kyle was amazing for us last season and is such an incredible athlete.

He held down the No. 3 spot in our batting order and has emerged as our leader, who we know we can send out and he will beat anyone.

“Matt (Vanek) will pitch a ton this year; and our junior, Josh Garner, is another incredible athlete. Matt Zuk pitched his heart out last season and saved every one of our games at the end of the season. Justin and Tyler have yet to throw a pitch for the varsity, but I know

With only two seniors on the club and starting four sophomores, the 2014 Tigers (28-9) fell a game short to Southwest Prairie champion Minooka.

After beating Minooka, behind Strepek in Minooka, the Tigers fell to the Indians the next day, the last day of the SPC season, at North. The Tigers advanced

to the Class 4A Oswego Sectional final, falling to Downers Grove South.

“We were so young, but we started winning right from the beginning,” Darlington added. “The kids had tremendous confidence in themselves and went out each day and expected to win. Our inexperience was overridden by our tremendous

confidence that we had in ourselves.”

The Tigers’ offense returns almost in its entirety. Richard Bryza, who hit cleanup in 2014, is back. Garner hit .300 with five homers. Carthage-bound Bryan VanDuser, Augustana-bound catcher Jason Pacanowski and Northern Illinois University recruit and catcher Jake Dunham also return. Junior Zach Jarosz will be back at shortstop.

The Tigers are scheduled to open at home Friday against Darlington’s alma mater, Morris. He starred in football, basketball and baseball for the Redskins, playing for his legendary father, football coach Dan Darlington.

Winning the arms race in Plainfield and returning so many quality hitters, 2015 may be the year the Tigers appear at Silver Cross Field on Friday, June 12, for the state finals.

He started six sophomores last season, along with two juniors and two seniors, and it paid off with a better record than the year before, even in the tough Southwest Prairie Conference.

Haskins counts seniors Josh Krueger, a Herald-News second-team selection last year, and Jose Barraza as his leaders. Krueger, headed to Judson University in the fall, set a school record with 40 hits, including 10 doubles, in

hitting .388 in 2014, and he hit .406 in garnering first-team honors the year before. Each plays outfield when not pitching. (Twelve of the 15-man roster can pitch, if necessary.)

Haskins also will be able to lean on Illinois-Chicago-bound junior Matt Bottcher, who is at shortstop when he’s not on the mound. The left-hand hitter is the first Division I recruit in Romeoville baseball history.

Haskins also will call on lefty senior Jake DiPego,

who’s ticketed for Iowa Wesleyan in the fall.

“I think our kids are believing in our expectations,” Haskins said. “It’s pride and work ethic. There’s a difference in the program. They believe we can be successful.

They’re held to a high level of accountability, academically, socially and athletically.”

In keeping with his youth movement, Haskins has three freshmen and a sophomore on his roster this year. But the key to success – along with Krueger, Barraza and DiPego – are the half-dozen juniors, led by Bottcher, who played extensively as sophomores last year.

“I feel we’ve got a lot of things in place,” Haskins said.

He didn’t say it, but the Spartans would love to snag one of the berths in the Class 4A sectional the school is hosting this year. Romeoville never has won a regional. How good would that be?

Reed-Custer’s Schoonover named all-state SUBMITTED REPORTS

Reed-Custer junior guard Travis Schoonover was one of five underclassmen among the 15 named to the first team of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Class 1A/2A Boys AllState Team.

Schoonover went over 1,000 career points this season and still has a year to play. He averaged 19.3 points and scored a school-record 47, including 44 in the second half and overtime, against Dwight in the championship game of the Marseilles Christmas Tournament.

He also had 146 assists, second on the team, and a team-best 129 steals.

ROMEOVILLE – Romeoville hopes to be the little baseball team that could.

With only 15 players, the Spartans don’t have anything approaching depth. Coach Dave Haskins hopes quality overrides the lack of quantity.

If it does, Romeoville has a shot at finishing over .500 for the first time in this decade.

More wins than losses is a given for the power teams in the area. But for the Spartans, well, let Haskins tell it.

“My first year [2012], one of the seniors said, ‘I just want to play in a complete game in the playoffs.’ I said, ‘What do you mean, a complete game?’ ” Haskins said. “He was brought up as a freshman, and in every game, they’d only gone five innings because of the slaughter rule.

“This is a different system, a different philosophy.”

It is one that Haskins employed to take Prairie Ridge to the Class 4A title in 2008 and pile up 115 wins in four seasons split between that school and St. Charles East through 2011 before he arrived at Romeoville four years ago.

“Some people say it takes four years to build a program,” Haskins said.

If that’s the case, this should be a good year for the Spartans. When Haskins arrived, he set about reconnecting ties to the elementary schools in the district. As a result, his grade school hitting camp participation has grown from 31 children to 97 in four years.

Freshman numbers are up.

And turnout for varsity has jumped from 14 in 2012 – “We took ’em all,” he said – to 23 this season. He kept 15, including three freshmen.

“We’re a young team, but we’ll be very competitive, like we were last year,” Haskins said. “We’re solid defensively.”

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Jonathan Toews scored twice and assisted on both of Marian Hossa’s goals to lead the Blackhawks past the slumping New York Islanders, 4-1, on Tuesday night.

Toews recorded his first four-point game this season as the Hawks won their third straight and improved to 7-11 since Feb. 24, when leading scorer Patrick Kane broke his collarbone against Florida.

New York’s Nikolay Kulemin scored at 5:29 of third period to end Corey Crawford’s shutout bid, but the Islanders lost their season-worst fourth straight.

Although Crawford made 38 saves, he wasn’t tested heavily by the goal-starved Islanders.

New York has scored only one goal in each of its four consecutive losses.

MESA, Ariz. – Jason Hammel threw four scoreless innings and Anthony Rizzo reached base three times Tuesday as the Cubs beat the Kansas City Royals, 4-3.

Hammel came in with a 10.80 ERA in his previous two outings over five innings, but had good downward action and fastball command against the Royals.

The right-hander allowed two hits and struck out three in his longest outing of the spring after he allowed nine hits and walked three in his previous two appearances.

Oatmeal is the vanilla ice cream of the breakfast world. Some of us like it plain and straight up, appreciating its clean, oaty flavor, its firm yet giving texture, the way it cloyingly stays in your mouth just a second longer than you think it should.

And then there is the rest of humanity, those folks who – as with vanilla ice cream – treat oatmeal as a carrier for whatever you care to pile on and mix in. This list is for those folks, the people who like to dress their breakfasts to impress – or at least to taste awesome.

Start with your favorite way to prepare a bowl of oatmeal, whether it’s cooked steel-cut oats, slow-cooked extra-thick oats or a packet of instant. Jazz it up by adding any of these toppings:

Tropical

Stir in 1 tablespoon of cream of coconut, then top with a spoonful of crushed pineapple and chopped toasted macadamia nuts.

Stir in a handful of shredded aged Gouda cheese, then top with crumbled crisp-cooked bacon.

With a big hand, start with a cue-bid

Successful bridge players understand cue-bids and are good card readers.

A cue-bid is a call in a suit bid naturally by an opponent, the cue-bidder having no desire to play in that suit. Exactly what a cue-bid means depends upon the situation. To start this week, we have been looking at replying to partner’s takeout double.

If the advancer (the doubler’s partner) has at least 12 high-card points (or an excellent 11) and his hand is not suitable for no-trump, he should cue-bid the opener’s suit – as South does in today’s deal. This cue-bid is totally artificial, just point-showing.

In answer, the doubler bids four-card suits up the bidding ladder – here, rebidding two hearts.

Then South jumps to four spades to confirm a long suit but a minimum in high cards. (Yes, he can bid a forcing two spades, which North would raise to four spades.)

Against four spades, West leads the heart ace: four, jack, three. West cashes the heart king: five, two, six.

Then West continues with the heart 10. East, after ruffing away dummy’s heart queen, shifts to a diamond.

How should South read the cards from there?

Based on West’s opening bid, the diamond finesse stands no chance, but the club finesse is a certainty.

Also, note that declarer needs the club finesse to win. So, he should take the trick with his diamond ace, draw trumps ending in hand, and run the club jack. The diamond queen disappears on dummy’s third club.

Glasses are the simplest way to regain your ability to see close objects clearly. If you already wear corrective lenses, you may need two sets of glasses: one for distance vision and one for close vision. Or you can try glasses with bifocal lenses. With bifocals, the upper portion of the glass corrects for distance and the lower portion for near vision.

Trifocal lenses have separate portions for distance, middle vision and near vision. The separate sections of trifocals are separated by lines. Progressive lenses accommodate distance, middle and near vision, but without the lines seen in bifocals and trifocals. Contact lenses also can be used to treat presbyopia.

I’d also cast a vote for eyeglasses. Most of us develop difficulty with our vision by mid-life, from presbyopia and other afflictions. Indeed, many of us have trouble from an early age.

Dear Doctor K: Why does it become harder for our eyes to focus on close objects as we get older?

Dear Reader: The eye is like a camera: It has a lens that continuously focuses to sharpen the picture. As light rays enter the eye, the flexible lens alters its shape, allowing the eye to focus on objects at varying distances. The lens focuses light rays on the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the rear of the eye.

As we age, the lens of the eye becomes increasingly inflexible. As a result, light rays focus behind the retina, rather than on it. This is called presbyopia. (On my website, AskDoctorK.com, I’ve put an illustration of how the lens focuses light rays in a normal eye and in a presbyopic eye.) No one knows exactly what causes the lens to become inflexible, but it happens to everyone as a natural part of aging.

As early as age 10, our lenses begin gradually to stiffen and lose the ability to change shape. By the time we are in our 40s, the lens has trouble focusing up close. We begin to experience blurred vision when we try to do tasks that require up-close focus, such as reading or needlework. The lens continues to stiffen until about age 65, when nearly all its flexibility has been lost.

Presbyopia eventually affects everyone, even people who are already farsighted (have trouble focusing on near objects) or nearsighted (have trouble focusing on objects that are farther away).

People who are farsighted may experience presbyopia a little earlier in life.

Fortunately, presbyopia can be treated with corrective lenses.

elderly, I parked as close to the door of the business as I could. I honestly didn’t see any signs or any parking meters. When we came out, there was a $25 ticket on my vehicle. I was so upset Mom gave me a $20 bill to help.

She now says she did it because I made her feel guilty and, since it is my car and she’s my mother, I should pay for the whole thing and return her money!

I wouldn’t have been there in the first place if I hadn’t been doing her a favor. I offered to pay $15 if she’d pay the rest. She refuses.

If I’m stuck with the whole thing I will resent it and won’t speak to her.

After all, I am a mother, too, and if I caused something like this to happen to any of my children, I would without question pay for the whole ticket. Who is right?
