JJC to close banquet facility

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Junior College will close its banquet facility in the Joliet Renaissance Center Ballroom at the end of the year. But the venue could come back under an outside caterer when it reopens in 2016, JJC President Debra Daniels told the Joliet City Council at its Monday pre-council meeting.

“It will still be a ballroom, but it will come back in a different way,” Daniels said.

Daniels updated the council on improvements at the college, specifically the City Center campus that will replace the current classrooms housed in the former Sheraton Hotel, which is attached to the north side of ballroom.

“The hotel will be torn down and leveled for parking,” Daniels said. “The ballroom will stay.”

The ballroom banquet facility, operated by JJC staff and

students, is losing about $300,000 per year, Daniels noted.

“It’s hard to justify keeping it open,” she said.

The banquet center employs three people.

The ballroom has long been home to the Joliet Rotary Club.

It also catered out to other clients. Those services will end after 2014. The Renaissance Center will continue to serve buffets and special dinners prepared by JJC Culinary Arts students.

The entire ballroom will be remodeled in conjunction with the school’s City Center project, Daniels said.

The core and shell of the college’s new six-story, 96,000-square-foot building at Chicago and Webster streets are now complete, Daniels said. The building will house the adult education and literacy department, workforce development and the culinary arts program.

The project will cost $58 million altogether, with $25.5 million promised by the state.

JJC is still waiting for the state to release the funds, but is prepared to go it alone if necessary using its own funding, Daniels said. “If not, we’ll build it out ourselves,” she said.

The 89-year-old building at 214 North Ottawa Street has changed hands several times.

The building was designed by the Chicago architectural firm of D. H. Burnham and Co. It was built in 1925 by J.B. French Company of Chicago.

It was originally designed as a social hall for the Joliet Chamber of Commerce.

In 1945, it was purchased by the American Legion Harwood Post 5.

In 1957, it was purchased by restaurateur Earl D’Amico and his brother, who converted into an upscale restaurant/banquet/ entertainment facility. D’Amico later built the Sheraton Hotel adjacent to the property.

JJC took over the property in June 1980, and rechristened it as the Joliet Renaissance Center.

Standards set for new single-family units

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Developers will officially need to adhere to new design standards for single-family home units after the village board passed a resolution defining an identity for Plainfield housing.

“It really is important,” Trustee Bill Lamb said. “People don’t realize, you buy a house now but you want to sell it off at a profit. If the whole neighborhood looks good it’s going to really pay off.”

The standards set several guidelines for how the houses should be built, including details for the use of materials, window design, rooflines, exterior trim and garage doors.

The plan also incentivizes the development of key lots such as corner homes and 360 housing development, or adding exterior elements on all sides of a home.

Materials such as smart board and fiber cement board are encouraged in place of vinyl. Brick usage is regulated to

avoid monotony and the standards encourage varied roof designs with restrictions on how flat the roof can get.

Balanced window placement is also noted, with the inclusion of side windows facing streets and vertical-oriented windows.

Side-loaded garages are encouraged, while “snout” designs where the garage protrudes excessively from the front porch are not allowed.

The board approved amendments for the continuing Route 30 construction with the installation of a permanent traffic light, illuminated street name signs and a special waste screening for the intersection of Route 30 and Wallin Drive.

The board also approved a police motorcycle lease agreement with the Starved Rock Harley-Davidson dealer, Ertomek, Inc.

Dunkin Donuts development Concerned residents spoke to trustees Monday about a recent proposal for a Dunkin Donuts to be built south of the Walgreens on Route 59 and Main Street.

They are concerned that the drive-thru would create a safety hazard for their children.

“This is one of, we counted, 16 little kids that live on Arnold street,” resident Ken Hurley said, pointing to his daughter.

Hurley said studies showed hundreds of cars come through Dunkin Donut locations daily, and the drive-thru would cause a safety hazard because of a nearby school bus stop.

“I don’t think the need for a Dunkin Donuts outweighs the safety of our children,” Hurley said.

Hurley’s Arnold Street neighbor, Theresa Scarcelli, said the drive-thru is the biggest concern. But residents are also worried about issues such as food and garbage trucks travelling in front of houses at early hours of the day, and noise from the loudspeakers of the facility.

The site is part of “A Vision for Division” development plan by the village. It was voted down in the last planning commission meeting, but a new plan will be presented to the commission Tuesday.

ELECTION DAY Small turnout predicted for primaries

Governor’s race Will County Republican Chairman Edward Ronkowski said he thinks the governor’s race could pull Republican voters to the polls. Voters will have a hand in which two candidates face head-to-head for the governor’s seat in November.

Republican gubernatorial candidate and billionaire Bruce Rauner – who has poured a record $6 million of his own money into the race – is leading in the polls against GOP candidates state Sens. Bill Brady and Kirk Dillard and state Treasurer Dan Rutherford.

Incumbent Democratic

Local races Other races at the local level include judges for subcircuits 1 and 2. In Subcircuit 2, Associate Judge Dinah Archambeault is unopposed in the Republican primary, but seven Democrats are vying for the same seat.

Judge Robbert Livas’ pending retirement will leave a vacancy in subcircuit 1. Assistant Public Defender Sherri Hale is unopposed in the Democratic primary, but Dan Rippy and Cosmo Tedone face off Tuesday for their GOP party’s nomination.

There are only two contested Will County Board races.

The race for District 9, which covers parts of Joliet, Homer Glen, New Lenox, Lockport and Crest Hill, fea-

tures three Democrats, including political newcomer Lauren Staley-Ferry and two incumbents, Diane Zigrossi and Walter Adamic. Republican candidate Annette Parker is running unopposed.

In District 11, which goes into parts of south Naperville, small businessman Michael “Big Mike” Strick is on the ballot alongside incumbents Suzanne Hart and Charles “Chuck” Maher. No candidates are running in the Democratic primary.

State races Incumbent U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, faces David Hale Jr., a conservative activist from Rockford, for the 16th District GOP nomination. Without a Democratic challenger, winning the primary will equal a Nov. 4 win.

Five candidates are vying for the 37th House District seat left vacant by retiring Rep. Renee Kosel, R-New Lenox.

The district covers parts of Joliet, Lockport, New Lenox, Mokena, Frankfort, Frankfort Square, Orland Park, Orland Hills and Tinley Park.

Three Republican candidates are vying for the 97th District state representative seat left vacant by state Rep. Tom Cross, who has represented the area since 1993 and is now running for state treasurer.

Referendums New Lenox Township voters have two referendums.

One seeks a property tax increase to fund the fire protection district. Another asks voters whether to maintain the property tax rate entitled to the New Lenox Community Park District that would otherwise be removed once the bonds used to construct the Sanctuary Golf Course are paid off.

Voter turnout in primary elections is historically underwhelming – particularly for ones that lack a presidential race – and Tuesday likely won’t be any different, Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots said.

Schultz Voots said she estimates a bleak countywide 17-percent voter turnout on Election Day – even with the highly publicized four-way GOP race for governor. In the last non-presidential primary election in 2010, less than 22 percent of voters showed up to the polls.

The lack of contested races at state and local levels could be, in part, the cause for such low turnout, she said.

“I always want turnout to be higher, but I don’t see that happening,” Schultz Voots said. “I just don’t see the turnout like we’ve had in the past.

It’s just been down. I hope I’m wrong.”

Yet, she said, there’s “no excuse” not to get out and vote Tuesday, noting that she doesn’t expect anyone to be hit with long lines.

Gov. Pat Quinn faces a longshot primary challenge from Tio Hardiman, a Chicago community activist.

“We’ve got four good [GOP] candidates, all of which are head-and-shoulders above Pat Quinn, who has run our state into the ground and made it the worst financially solvent state by a long shot,” Ronkowski said.

Will County Democratic Chairman Scott Pyles defended Quinn, arguing he walked into the role in 2010 with a financial mess leftover from previous years.

“I think Pat Quinn’s done a pretty good job. We’ve got pension reform, which was years and years overdue,” he said.

“The recession took a big toll on the state. We lost a lot of jobs and it’s been a slow dig.”

Pyles noted it’s important for voters to cast their ballots in the Will County sheriff’s race, which has three Democrats and two Republicans vying to replace current sheriff and Republican Paul Kaupas, who’s calling it quits after three terms.

Durbin visits with Latino business owners

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin was in Joliet a day ahead of the election to meet with Latino business owners to talk about immigration issues.

On Monday, Durbin and U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, met with more than a dozen business leaders at the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry to hear their concerns about issues affecting their community. Foster represents the 11th District, which includes all or parts of Bolingbrook, Joliet, New Lenox and Shorewood, among other areas.

Both Durbin and Foster are running unopposed in the Democratic primary on Tues-

day. Both have been proponents of immigration reform, including granting citizenship to undocumented immigrants.

The local business owners talked about struggling small businesses run by minorities and voiced concerns about getting recognition from politicians.

The Latino community needs its members to be strong voices for change, said Martha Suarez, secretary of ALIANZA Business Alliance, a Joliet-based association for Latino business owners.

“I am relentless when I say things are not status quo,” she said. “It’s no longer about being quiet. … God gave me this gift and I will use it and keep using it.”

She asked Durbin what the

next steps for the community could be. Durbin said they need to get every person who is eligible to register to vote.

Many who are eligible don’t register, he said.

“If you got real voters who care about real issues, you get real results,” he said.

One business owner, Scottie Munoz, who runs Taquerias Atotonilco in Joliet, talked about being raised by parents who immigrated from Mexico and became a “pillar of the community.” He said he thinks the Latino community has left its mark on the U.S. “We stimulate the economy – legal or not legal – we stimulate the economy,” he said. “Nobody is taking jobs.

They’re doing a lot of the jobs nobody wants to do.”

Foster said a significant number of entrepreneurs are immigrants. He said it’s estimated the passage of comprehensive immigration reform could create 3 million new homeowners.

“These are simply families that have money for the down payment but they are not willing to make the leap into homeownership, because one or more of their family members does not have legal status,” he said.

Some of the leaders stressed the need for Latino youths to complete high school and college. Durbin said change in the community can begin at home with family values that push youths toward better lives than their parents.

“That’s what I heard grow-

ing up from my immigrant mom, and I bet a lot of you heard it too,” he said.

After the meeting, Munoz said he was motivated to work for change.

“You should really speak out and do it in a smart way on how to get other people involved. … It’s not just one person, you have to have community support,” he said.

The Republicans do have a contested race in Tuesday’s primary for the 11th Congressional District. Naperville businessman Bert Miller, conservative talk show host Ian Bayne of Aurora, Grundy County Board member Chris Balkema and state Rep. Darlene Senger, R-Naperville, are running for their party’s nomination.

Residents sue Will County over concrete crushing operation

BY LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com WHEATLAND TOWNSHIP – A group of residents contends in a lawsuit they were kept in the dark while the Will County Board negotiated an agreement allowing a concrete crushing operation close to their homes.

The lawsuit filed Friday seeks to undo the negotiated settlement with Boughton Materials Inc., which runs a 200-acre quarry in Wheatland Township.

The lawsuit alleges board members did not follow proper procedure in December when it approved zoning changes as part of the settlement without holding a public hearing or disclosing to residents that such a settlement existed.

The settlement resulted in the rezoning of a 22-acre parcel of land owned by the company on 111th Street from agricultural to industrial and allowed the company to “engage in waste concrete crushing and uncontained storage in a heavily residential area only a few hun-

Only three board members – Suzanne Hart, R-Naperville, Chuck Maher, R-Naperville,

and Judy Ogalla, R-Monee – voted against the settlement.

Charles Pelkie, spokesman for the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office, said the office – as of Monday morning – had not been served with a formal copy of the lawsuit and that he

could not comment on it.

“We’re aware [of the lawsuit],” he said. “It’s very early in the process and we’ll have to read what’s alleged in the lawsuit and make a determination as to what the next step is.”

Residents Kenneth and Jennifer Nemeth, Mustafa and Mary Dirilten, Christopher Monovich, Marthy Tracey and Keri Casey are listed as plaintiffs in the suit.

Prior to the suit being filed, board members Maher and Hart requested the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office review board procedures. Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Mary Tatroe was asked to report her findings to board members at the Executive Committee’s April 3 meeting.

“We’re going to take a look at ... whether or not everything that was done was done appropriately,” Pelkie said of the office’s review of procedures.

Board member Suzanne Hart said she could not comment on the lawsuit and that she was told to defer all questions to the state’s attorney office.

Lincoln-Way D-210 cuts four teachers Fourteen more face possible dismissal

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Four art teachers are losing their jobs at Lincoln-Way High School District 210, and more instructors face being laid off because of enrollment shifts and low state funding.

Board members came out of closed session at Thursday’s board meeting to unanimously vote to dismiss four teachers in the district’s fine arts department. The board also gave notices of dismissal to 14 non-tenured teachers.

The 14 teachers given notice were a combination of

part-time, full-time and substitute teachers, said Stacy Holland, the district’s community relations director. Holland said it’s possible that some of the 14 teachers will be called back.

The decision to lay off four art teachers was based on the low number of students signing up for those teachers’ art classes in the district, she said. And it wasn’t an easy decision for District Superintendent Scott Tingley, who said the teachers being dismissed were very good teachers.

“I’m upset about that,” he said. “This is not something we want to do, but it’s not re-

sponsible for me to pay these people teacher salaries if [students are] not taking classes.”

He said district officials are working to ensure the dismissed teachers land on their feet by finding them work and writing letters of references.

The Lincoln-Way high school district has been making a series of cuts during the past five years as it struggles with an economy recovering from a recession and decreasing state funding for school districts, school officials have said. In the past several years, the district has cut a writing center, math lab and an academic assistance program.

School officials nearly decided to phase out the Air Force Junior ROTC program this year but wound up saving the program at a reduced scale. The decision at a February board meeting to keep the ROTC program followed a public backlash from students and families opposed to its elimination. As with other programs, ROTC program is facing low student enrollment.

Thursday’s decision to let go of several art teachers did not sit well with Ed Reyes’ daughter, Isabella, who is a senior at Lincoln-Way West High School. Reyes, a New Lenox resident, said his daughter will lose two of her favorite teachers who were influential in her development as an art-

ist.

Reyes said he worries what creative outlets will still exist for his two other children who have yet to enter high school.

Both of them play the cello and piano, he said.

“I understand the importance of reading and math, but at the same time you need the arts to offset any education you want to go through,” he said.

Tingley said the decision was purely based on supply and demand for art courses within the district. He said the district is doing what it can to promote the fine arts and is not taking away the programs altogether. There are several teachers across departments the district will retain based on need, he said.

Grundy Habitat builds 10th home

MORRIS – Rey Mercado and his daughters, Marina and Willow, were able to cut the ribbon on their first home – a Habitat for Humanity home – Saturday in Morris.

The Mercado family is the recipient of Grundy-Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity’s 10th home, located on the east side of Morris on the former Papermill property.

“The family is required to do 400 hours of sweat equity,” Julie Wilkinson, president of Grundy-Three Rivers Habitat for Humanity told the crowd gathered at the dedication ceremony. “Rey has been out on his days off, even when no one else was here. He is always here with a smile and never

complained. He was happy to do it.”

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit that builds affordable homes for families that earn 30 to 60 percent of the area’s median income and are unable to qualify for a conventional home loan. The homes come with a no-interest mortgage, with mortgage payments helping fund the next Habitat home.

The Mercado family was among 25 applicants who applied for a home in the fall of 2012. Following an assessment of the family’s finances and the need for permanent housing, they were selected as the “partner family.”

Wilkinson said there are three criteria the organization looks at when choosing a family for a Habitat home. The

The family who is chosen is given a mentor who helps with financial planning as well as wading through the process from beginning to end.

The original goal was to have the family living in the home by Christmas, but Mother Nature seems to have fought them each step of the way.

Even at the dedication ceremony, the front yard was soggy and muddy. Installation of the carpet was put off until after the ceremony, where people were invited to tour the home.

“Saying thank you isn’t nearly enough,” Rey said. “I want to applaud all of you who put in the time and effort. This small community showed it can make a big difference.”

Rey closed on the house this week, and the family is set to move in by the end of the month.

JOLIET – One man was hit in the arm by gunfire sprayed into a crowd Friday during a video shoot.

Police arrested two men after a vehicle chase.

Cmdr. Al Roechner said at 6:56 p.m. a crowd of people was in the parking lot of the convenience store at 124 Richards St. when the incident occurred.

“They were filming with the permission of the business owners, and four officers were monitoring the crowd at the time,” Roechner said.

As a red Chevrolet Monte Carlo approached on Second Avenue, a man leaned out the passenger window and fired into the crowd, Roechner

said. Jordan Hughes, 18, was later arrested.

The car, which was allegedly driven by Ernest S. Morgan, 18, sped off as officers began to pursue it.

A 21-year-old man was struck in his lower right arm.

He was driven by a friend to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center where he was treated for an injury that was not life-threatening. Roechner said police later found five shell casings at the scene and discovered a van parked in the lot also had been struck.

Officers pursued the Monte Carlo and watched Hughes throw the gun out the window at Washington Street and Miller Avenue, Roechner said.

The Monte Carlo was stopped in the 1300 block of

Freedom Boulevard where Hughes and Morgan were taken into custody, Roechner said.

Hughes, of the 2000 block of Arthur Avenue in Lockport, was arrested on charges of aggravated battery, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unauthorized possession of ammunition. He also was ticketed for not wearing a seat belt and littering on the roadway, according to reports.

Morgan, of the 1900 block of Burry Circle Drive in Crest Hill, was arrested on charges of aggravated battery, aggravated fleeing from police, reckless driving and resisting arrest. He also received several tickets for disregarding traffic lights, disregarding stop signs and improper lane usage.

Both men were booked into the Will County jail and are being held on $250,000 bond.

Plainfield Mayor Collins gets honor

“He is a great guy,” foundation District Liaison Tom Hernandez said. “He really embodies the foundation, a life of achievement and a life of service.”

Collins, who has also served as a trustee for the village board and for the Plainfield Fire Pro-

tection District, graduated from Plainfield High School, now Plainfield Central High School, in 1964.

JOLIET – Police said they found a passenger with a handgun inside a car stopped in the middle of the street.

At 11 p.m. Friday, officers found a vehicle with four people inside at Belleview and Wheeler avenues and went to investigate, according to Cmdr. Al Roechner.

“They smelled the strong odor of cannabis as they approached and saw an open bottle of cognac at the feet of the passenger sitting behind the driver,” Roechner said.

Officers also reportedly found a .357 revolver near

Dwayne P. Richter’s feet and placed him under arrest. Richter, 22, also was carrying a gram of marijuana when he was taken into custody, Roechner said.

Tevin Ellis, 23, refused to get out of the driver’s seat and also was arrested, Roechner said. He was charged with obstructing a police officer and illegal transport of alcohol and released on bond.

Richter, of the 1400 block of North William Street, was booked into the Will County jail on charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unauthorized possession of a firearm and marijuana possession.

OBITUARIES NEAL HOUBOLT BORN: Oct. 16, 1921; in Joliet DIED: March 15, 2014; in Joliet Age 92. Peacefully Saturday, March 15, 2014, at home with his family at his side.

Born October 16, 1921, he was one of four children of John and Hendrika (nee Van Ingen) Houbolt, and a lifelong Joliet area resident. He was an ensign on a U.S. Navy Mine Sweeper Ship during World War II. Neal was a goal oriented, success driven entrepreneur in the manufacturing field. He owned and operated companies in the U.S., as well as Canada and Mexico. His ownership of the J.E. Messsenger Company, along with his wife and mother-in-law, created an environment for the business to flourish. From there was born Jemco Insulated Wire, Interstate Wire Corp., Assemblies or Kords and Jemco Engineering Company. A member of the Joliet Regional Port Authority. Neal's last venture was to purchase Oak Lawn Harley Davidson.

Neal bought Oak Lawn HarleyDavidson on Feb. 13, 1998 and oversaw his daughter, Joy, and sonin law, Dave Tinsman, along with arguably the best Harley salesman already working there, Mike “Uncle Mike” Sanko, as his partners managing the business. Neal was appreciated and respected by all of the employees, their families, customers, and the members of the Oak Lawn Hog Chapter. He always instilled the value and the principle of customer satisfaction with all of his staff.

He was also very supportive of many charities such as The Manteno Veterans Run, Illinois Freedom Run to benefit our soldiers and their families, The Hope Children's Hospital affiliated with Christ Hospital, Breast Cancer organizations, Big Bikes & Little Tykes, the Joliet Area Historical Museum and so many more.

The dealership became a family run business. Can classes yield a billion-dollar bracket?

Warren Buffett looks at his offer to pay $1 billion to anyone who fills out a perfect NCAA tournament bracket as nothing more than a matter of having the numbers in his favor.

Mathematicians say he’s right. That’s still not stopping them from building a cottage industry by teaching bracket-fillers how to make the impossible seem possible – or a little less improbable.

Around a half-dozen college professors are offering special classes to teach people the ins and outs of the numbers that will, inevitably, work against them. And there’s one website – takebuffettsbillion.com – that says it will send a unique, statistician-crunched bracket to anyone who signs up, with the promise that all those in on the gig will split the money if one of those brackets is the winner. (As of Monday, about 9,000 people had signed up.)

“I’d love to demystify all this,” said DePaul math pro-

fessor Jeff Bergen, whose expertise has been in demand this month. “The math involved is quite simple and can be done in a high school class. What blows people away is the magnitude of the numbers. You look at the number ‘9 quintillion,’ and it’s hard to wrap your head around it.”

There are a few more than 9.2 quintillion combinations for a 64-team bracket. A quintillion is 1 million times 1 trillion – a 1 with 18 zeros behind it. If every possibility were filled out on its own sheet of paper, the weight of the paper would be 184 trillion tons — more than 500 million times the weight of the Empire State Building.

To help whittle the odds, math professor Tim Chartier of Davidson College held a seminar. For $100 a head, he offered a class last week touted as 90 minutes where you could “learn how to craft an NCAA basketball tournament bracket from a master, and let mathematics boost your chances of creating the perfect bracket.”

“The key to it is not necessarily doing some amazing thing that nobody’s ever done,” Chartier said. “The key is weighting it but weight-

ing it with an ability to identify when a team is strong.”

At St. Joseph’s, alumnus Joe Lunardi, who is widely credited with creating the “science” of bracketology, offered a $99 course in which he shared some of his trade secrets. The final exam involved filling in the names of the teams on a mock bracket.

(Lunardi himself probably would’ve gotten an A-minus: He nailed 10 of the top 12 slots, but, like most people, never saw North Carolina State making it and SMU left out.)

The University of Cincinnati business school offers a class that meets three Saturdays before Selection Sunday.

Professor Mike Magazine teaches the history of the NCAA tournament and also how to go through probabilities and game simulations to come up with a winning bracket.

“The life lesson,” Magazine said, “is that we make a lot of decisions that are the right decisions, but the outcomes don’t always come out the way we planned.”

Buffett is betting on that.

shire Hathaway, an undisclosed amount to insure the billion-dollar payoff. Guesses are Buffett received anywhere between $1 million and $10 million, and, according to Bergen’s calculations, anything more than $1 million would be a very good investment.

Bergen calculates that someone with knowledge of basketball – say, someone with the rudimentary smarts to go with every No. 1 seed in their first game, where they are 116-0 over the last 29 years – still only has a 128 billion-1 chance of being perfect.

Buffett’s contest is capped at 15 million entrants, so, Bergen says, if all 15 million sign up and they all have some knowledge of basketball, the odds are still 8,500-1 against a perfect bracket. That’s more than a 99.99 percent chance that everyone will get at least one game wrong.

Bergen said you’d have a better chance of buying one Mega Millions ticket and one Powerball ticket and winning both in the same week.

All of which reinforces the fact that about the only sure thing in March Madness is that there are no sure things.

U.S. stocks jump as worries over Crimea vote fade

By KEN SWEET The Associated Press NEW YORK – Investors were able to put aside the ongoing political turmoil in Ukraine on Monday to focus on a bit of good news on the U.S. economy.

Stocks ended sharply higher, helped by a report that showed factory output rebounded last month.

The Dow Jones industrial average added 181.55 points, or 1.1 percent, to 16,247.22. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose 17.70 points, or 1 percent, to 1,858.83 and the Nasdaq composite rose 34.55 points, or 0.8 percent, to 4,279.95.

The market’s gains were broad. All 30 members of the Dow and all 10 industry groups of the S&P 500 rose.

Technology stocks were among the biggest gainers, led

by Yahoo, which rose 4 percent. Yahoo owns a quarter of the Chinese e-commerce website AliBaba, which announced plans to go public in the U.S. While relatively unknown in the U.S., AliBaba is one of the world’s most-trafficked websites in the world’s second-largest economy. Yahoo rose $1.51 to $39.11.

Other tech stocks also rose, including Microsoft, Google and Amazon.

Monday’s advance comes after stocks spent much of last week in retreat. The major indexes fell roughly 2 percent, their worst week since January, on concerns that the tensions between Ukraine and Russia could boil over. Those tensions are no closer to being resolved, but so far armed conflict does not appear to be in the cards.

Crimeans overwhelmingly voted Sunday in favor of Crimea breaking away from Ukraine to return to Russia. While destabilizing to Ukraine, the results were what investors and international observers widely expected. More importantly, the controversial vote, while wide-

ly considered illegitimate by the international community, happened without any major violence.

“Russia got what it wanted without having to take Crimea by force,” said Sam Stovall, chief equity strategist with S&P Capital IQ. Both the White House and the European Union announced sanctions and visa restrictions against several Russian officials as a result of the referendum.

The U.S. imposed sanctions on seven Russian government officials as well as four Ukrainians, including former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.

The EU slapped travel bans and

asset freezes on 21 people from Russia and Crimea.

With the Crimean vote behind them, U.S. investors exited their traditional safe havens to return to riskier parts of the market. Bond prices fell, pushing the yield of 10-year Treasury note up to 2.70 percent from 2.66 percent Friday. The price of gold fell modestly.

Utilities, a popular industry sector in times of uncertainty, rose less than the rest of the market. The Dow Jones Utility Average, which tracks the performance of 15 utility companies, rose 0.7 percent on Monday versus the S&P 500’s 1 percent gain.

STATE Illinois boosts humor in health insurance advertising campaign

By CARLA K. JOHNSON The Associated Press CHICAGO – Illinois officials hope that using humor can give the state’s health insurance enrollment numbers the same kind of bump that the federal site saw after President Barack Obama bantered about the law with actor Zach Galifianakis.

Obama’s appearance on the comedy website Funny or Die last week in a bid to reach young people resulted in 32,000 users clicking through to the federal insurance enrollment site within 12 hours.

In Illinois, officials are tracking the effectiveness of satirical ads placed with the mock newspaper The Onion, music service Pandora and BuzzFeed, the website known for its lists and quizzes. So far, the results look encouraging to officials overseeing a $33 million marketing campaign to promote health coverage.

The targeted efforts drove 41,300 new users to the Get Covered Illinois website during a recent four-week

ing a tax penalty. Procrastinators may be starting to pay attention.

“We were averaging about 10,000 visitors a day in February. That became 20,000 a day in March and we’re closer to about 25,000 a day now,” Koehler said.

Getting more young adults to sign up is considered crucial to the health law’s success.

Their premiums are needed to offset the cost of medical care for older, sicker people and keep costs from spiking in future years. Health policy experts suggest 40 percent of the overall enrollees need to be ages 18 to 34 to keep prices down. So far, in Illinois, only 25 percent of those enrolled are in that target age group.

Are the ads driving young adults to buy insurance?

That’s unclear. Koehler said state officials “haven’t drilled down to that level yet.”

“We like to think of ourselves as trendsetters in this area,” Koehler said. “We’re the first state to partner with The Onion. We think ultimately it’s going to work.”

Candidates gear up for primary

By SARA BURNETT and SOPHIA TAREEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – The contenders for Illinois governor crisscrossed the state Monday on the final day of campaigning before the primary elections, with a wealthy venture capitalist trying to fend off three longtime Republican lawmakers to advance to a likely fall matchup with Democratic Gov. The choice on Tuesday will shape a November ballot for what could be Republicans’ best chance to take back the governor’s office after more than a decade in Democratic control. Illinois’ primary also

will set up races for Congress, a U.S. Senate seat, the state Legislature, statewide constitutional officers and numerous local offices.

Most gubernatorial candidates focused their final campaigning on Quinn, with three of the four Republicans and one Democratic primary challenger touring the state by plane, bus and car.

“We are going to sweep Pat Quinn into the dustbin of history in Illinois,” Bruce Rauner, the Republican venture capitalist, told supporters at a cafe in the northern Illinois community of Rockford before flying downstate.

“We’re going to get him out of office.”

Rauner, who is seeking office for the first time, has led in polls and fundraising over state Sens. Kirk Dillard and Bill Brady and state Treasurer Dan Rutherford. Quinn, a Chicago Democrat, is widely expected to win over his lesser-known challenger, activist Tio Hardiman.

Still, Hardiman, Dillard and Brady set out statewide with final pitches.

“If we do what we did last time, we’ll win this primary and go on to beat Pat Quinn,” said Bloomington Republican Brady.

Body of young girl found in suburban woods

CHICAGO – Charges are pending against a Georgia man who held police at bay for more than eight hours during a standoff on Chicago’s iconic Lake Shore Drive.

Police said Monday that the man is in custody, but his name hasn’t been released.

Sunday’s standoff prompted the shutdown of the busy road, which wasn’t reopened until before dawn Monday.

The man was wanted in connection with a murder earlier this month in Hampton, Ga., about 30 miles from Atlanta.

Sunday’s chase began around 12:30 p.m. in the Chicago suburb of Harvey and continued into Chicago. The chase injured four people – including a 10-year-old and a Chicago police officer.

None of their injuries were life-threatening.

Police say the man was armed with knives and had self-inflicted injuries.

RIVERDALE – Investigators say an autopsy is expected on the remains of a young girl whose body was found this weekend in the woods near the Chicago suburb of Riverdale.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office says the girl is thought to be about three years old. Her remains were found Sunday afternoon by someone walking near a wooded area south of Chicago.

Authorities say an autopsy is expected Monday.

The girl’s name hasn’t been released.

Riverdale police along with the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force are investigating her death.

Riverdale is about 17 miles south of downtown Chicago.

NEW YORK – Researchers said they have spotted evidence that a split-second after the Big Bang, the newly formed universe ballooned out at a pace so astonishing that it left behind ripples in the fabric of the cosmos.

If confirmed, experts said, the discovery would be a major advance in the understanding of the early universe. Although many scientists already believed that an initial, extremely rapid growth spurt happened, they have long sought the type of evidence cited in the new study.

The results reported Monday emerged after researchers peered into the faint light that remains from the Big Bang of nearly 14 billion years ago.

The discovery “gives us a window on the universe at the very beginning,” when it was far less than one-trillionth of a second old, said theoretical physicist Lawrence Krauss of Arizona State University, who was not involved in the work.

“It’s just amazing,” Krauss said. “You can see back to the beginning of time.”

Marc Kamionkowski, a theoretical physicist at Johns Hopkins University who did not participate in the research, said the finding is “not just a home run. It’s a grand slam.”

He and other experts said the results must be confirmed by other observations, a standard caveat in science.

Right after the Big Bang, the universe was a hot soup of particles. It took about 380,000 years to cool enough that the particles could form atoms, then stars and galaxies. Billions of years later, planets formed from gas and dust that were orbiting stars. The universe has continued to spread out.

Krauss said he thinks the new results could rank among the greatest breakthroughs in astrophysics over the past 25 years, such as the Nobel prize-winning discovery that the universe’s expansion is accelerating.

Monday’s findings were announced by a collaboration that included researchers from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, the University of Minnesota, Stanford University, the California Institute of Technology and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The team plans to submit its conclusions to a scientific journal this week, said its leader, John Kovac of Harvard.

Astronomers scanned about 2 percent of the sky for three years with a telescope at the South Pole, where the air is exceptionally dry.

They were looking for a specific pattern in light waves within the faint microwave glow left over from the Big Bang. The pattern has long been considered evidence of rapid growth, known as inflation. Kovac called it “the smoking-gun signature of inflation.”

The reported detection suggests that “inflation has sent us a telegram,” Kamionkowski said.

The researchers said the light-wave pattern was caused by gravitational waves, which are ripples in space and time. If verified, the new work would be the first detection of such waves from the birth of the universe, which have been called the first tremors of the Big Bang.

Krauss cautioned that the light-wave pattern might not be a sign of inflation, although he stressed that it’s “extremely likely” that it is. The pattern is “our best hope” for a direct test of whether the rapid growth spurt happened, he said.

By MATTHEW LEE The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Unsuccessful with previous threats, the United States and its European allies stepped up their pressure on Russia to end its intervention in Ukraine on Monday by imposing the most comprehensive sanctions against Russian officials since the Cold War. Acting in concert with Europe, the Obama administration froze the U.S. assets of seven Russian officials, including top advisers to President Vladimir Putin, for their support of Crimea’s vote to secede from Ukraine, while similar sanctions were imposed on four Ukrainian officials for instigating Sunday’s Crimean referendum.

Although the threat of sanctions has failed thus far to persuade Putin to drop support for Crimea’s secession and potential entry into the Russian Federation — or to pull back from threatening military moves near Ukraine’s south and east — President Barack Obama said failure to step back now would draw move severe consequences.

“If Russia continues to interfere in Ukraine, we stand ready to impose further sanctions,” Obama declared at the White House shortly after the penalties were announced. He noted that Vice President Joe Biden would be traveling to Europe late Monday to reassure Eastern European leaders of America’s commitment to them and that he himself would be going next week on a previously planned trip to make a similar point. Secretary of State John Kerry also is expected in Europe in the coming days.

“We’ll continue to make clear to Russia that further provocations will achieve nothing except to further isolate Russia and diminish its place in the world,” he said.

“The international community will continue to stand together to oppose any violations of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity, and continued Russian military intervention in Ukraine will only deepen Russia’s diplomatic isolation and exact a greater toll on the Russian economy.”

But administration critics said Obama’s actions were too little to convince Putin of anything.

Russia, like Yanukovych himself, characterizes his ouster as a coup, and alleges the new authorities are fascist-minded and likely to crack down on Ukraine’s ethnic Russian population.

Pro-Russia demonstrations have broken out in several cities in eastern Ukraine near the Russian border, where the Kremlin has been massing troops.

Fearing that Russia is prepared to risk violence to make a land-grab, the West has consistently spoken out against Russia’s actions but has run into a wall of resistance from Moscow.

Libya tanker seized by U.S. Navy SEALs forces

By ESAM MOHAMED The Associated Press TRIPOLI, Libya – U.S. Navy SEALs seized an oil tanker off the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, stopping an attempt by a Libyan militia to sell the shipload of crude oil in defiance of the Libyan government. Supporters of the militia, which calls for autonomy for the eastern half of Libya, vowed Monday to try again to export oil again from the ports they control.

The attempted sale of the oil – Libya’s most crucial resource – was a stark symbol of the weakness of Libya’s central government, which has been unable to impose its authority over the North African nation since the ouster and killing of longtime strongman Moammar Gadhafi in 2011. Power in the country has fragmented among multiple, heavily armed militias, most of them regionally based.

An eastern-based militia headed by a command-

er named Ibrahim Jedran seized a series of oil facilities in the east last summer, bringing Libya’s output of 1.4 billion barrels a day to a trickle and gouging the government’s biggest revenue source.

Jedran is part of a movement seeking autonomy for the eastern half of Libya, known by the historical name of Cyrenaica, which has long complained of discrimination by governments in Tripoli. Last week, his militia loaded up a North Korean-flagged tanker with a load of oil worth $30 million at the port of al-Sidra, and the tanker succeeded in eluding pro-government forces and escaping to sea.

The tanker, Morning Glory, was seized late Sunday

by U.S. Navy commandos in international waters off Cyprus, the Pentagon said in a statement. Rear Adm. John Kirby said no one was injured in the operation, which was approved by President Barack Obama.

The Morning Glory will

return to Libya under the control of sailors from the USS Stout, it said. Cyprus’ Foreign Ministry said the tanker was anchored some 18 nautical miles of its port of Limassol when it was captured. It is not known who the oil was to be sold to or who owns the tanker.

The attempted oil sale fueled a political crisis in Libya. The parliament, where Islamist lawmakers had a long rivalry with then-Prime Minister Ali Zidan, used the crisis to vote him out, saying it had underlined his weakness.

Libya’s interim government said in a statement Monday that the oil cargo will be unloaded when it arrives in Libya. The crew is safe and will be dealt with in accordance with international law, it added. It thanked the United States and Cyprus and “all those who contributed” to the vessel’s capture, adding, “Oil is the backbone of the national economy and tampering with it ... is unacceptable.”

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Officials revealed a new timeline Monday suggesting the final voice transmission from the cockpit of the missing Malaysian plane may have occurred before any of its communications systems were disabled, adding more uncertainty about who aboard might have been to blame.

The search for Flight 370, which vanished early March 8 while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board, has now been expanded deep into the northern and southern hemispheres. Australian vessels scoured the southern Indian Ocean and China offered 21 of its satellites to help Malaysia in the unprecedented hunt.

With no wreckage found in one of the most puzzling aviation mysteries of all time, passengers’ relatives have been left in an agonizing limbo.

Investigators say the Boeing 777 was deliberately diverted during its overnight flight and flew off-course for hours. They haven’t ruled out hijacking, sabotage, or pilot suicide, and are checking the backgrounds of the 227 passengers and 12 crew members – as well as the ground crew – for personal problems, psychological issues or links to terrorists.

Malaysian Defense Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said finding the plane was still the main focus, and he did not rule out that it might be discovered intact.

“The fact that there was no distress signal, no ransom notes, no parties claiming responsibility, there is always hope,” Hishammuddin said at a news conference.

Malaysian Airlines CEO Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said an initial investigation indicated that the last words ground controllers heard from the plane – “All right, good night” – were spoken by the co-pilot, Fariq Abdul Hamid. A voice other than that of Fariq or the pilot, Zaharie Ahmad Shah, would have been clearest indication yet of something amiss in the cockpit before the flight went off-course.

Malaysian officials said earlier that those words came after one of the jetliner’s data communications systems – the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System – had been switched off, suggesting the voice from the cockpit may have been trying to deceive ground controllers.

However, Ahmad said that while the last data transmission from ACARS – which gives plane performance and maintenance information – came before that, it was still unclear at what point the system was switched off, making any implications of the timing murkier.

The new information opened the possibility that both ACARS and the plane’s transponders, which make the plane visible to civilian air traffic controllers, were turned off at about the same time. It also suggests that the message delivered from the cockpit could have preceded any of the severed communications.

Turning off a transponder is easy and, in rare instances, there may be good reason to do so in flight – for example, if it were reporting incorrect data.

The Malaysian plane does not appear to fit that scenario, said John Gadzinski, a 737 captain.

“There is a raised eyebrow, like Spock on ‘Star Trek’ – you just sit there and go, ‘Why would anybody do that?’ ” Gadzinski said of what he is hearing among pilots.

Other pilots in the United States cautioned against reading too much into what little is known so far about the actions of the Malaysia Airlines crew.

“You can’t take anything off the table until everything is on the table, and we don’t even have an aircraft,” said Boeing 737 pilot Mike Karn, president of the Coalition of Airline Pilots Associations.

Authorities have pointed to the shutdown of the transponders and the ACARS as evidence that someone with a detailed knowledge of the plane was involved. But Bob Coffman, an airline captain and former 777 pilot, said that kind of information is not hard to find in the digital age.

Why you should vote By now, you probably are a tad tired of us telling you how important it is to vote in today’s election.

We don’t apologize for the repetition of the message. It is important for Americans to learn about the candidates and cast a ballot.

As a bit of a reprieve, however, we thought we’d step aside and let others tell you why you should get to know the candidates and vote: “Bad officials are elected by good citizens who do not vote,” drama critic and editor George Jean Nathan said.

“If you have been voting for politicians who promise to give you goodies at someone else’s expense, then you have no right to complain when they take your money and give it to someone else, including themselves,” economist Thomas Sowell said.

“The ballot is stronger than the bullet,” President Abraham Lincoln said.

“The ignorance of one voter in a democracy impairs the security of all,” President John F. Kennedy said.

“Those who stay away from the election think that one vote will do no good: ’Tis but one step more to think one vote will do no harm,” essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson said.

“The vote is the most powerful instrument ever devised by man for breaking down injustice and destroying the terrible walls which imprison men because they are different from other men,” President Lyndon B. Johnson said.

“To make democracy work, we must be a nation of participants, not simply observers. One who does not vote has no right to complain,” author Louis L’Amour said.

“Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education,” President Franklin D. Roosevelt said.

Said President Emeritus of the University of Notre Dame Theodore Hesburgh: “Voting is a civic sacrament.”

Political reporters sometimes go too far Way back in 1992, I did a story about Dan Rutherford’s first run for the Illinois House of Representatives.

The House Democrats back then were quietly spreading rumors about Rutherford’s private life, hoping that the conservative, rural district would refuse to support someone who they said seemed to be gay. It was a classic “barber shop” play. Go where people hang out, like barber shops and taverns, and start spreading a rumor. Spread that rumor in enough places, and pretty soon lots of folks would eventually hear it and spread it themselves.

Without mentioning Rutherford’s name, I wrote that I knew the district pretty well. I didn’t reveal it in the story at the time, but I was raised on a farm in Iroquois County and my mom was born in Pontiac, near where Rutherford lives.

I wrote all those years ago that the Democrats were deluding themselves. Those voters weren’t just conservatives, they were dyed in the wool Republicans. They’d take a Republican over a Democrat any day of the week, pretty much no matter what the grapevine was saying.

All the Democrats were doing was

VIEWS Rich Miller embarrassing themselves, I wrote, and they ought to cut it out. Rutherford won, of course. The Democrats’ tactic failed.

I remembered that story when the Sun-Times and the Tribune started publishing “exposés” about how Treasurer Rutherford had a habit of staying in the same hotel room or apartment with his male travel aide on some government and political trips. These stories served little apparent purpose other than to try and gin up that very same rumor mill about the candidate. The pieces were almost adolescently prurient in nature.

As with the Democrats almost 22 years ago, the newspapers never should’ve done that and should’ve instead risen above such nonsense.

The real angle here is that insiders say the young man in question was not comfortable with the arrangement. He has not, to my knowledge, alleged that Rutherford

did anything specifically untoward, it’s just that he reportedly didn’t want to continue sharing rooms with his male boss. The story buttresses accounts that Rutherford puts some very weird pressure on some of his employees.

But this young man’s name was dragged through some very unseemly mud by the two largest newspapers in his home state. It wasn’t fair to him, let alone the whisper campaign damage it did to Rutherford.

Ten years after I wrote that first story in 1992, I was talking with Rutherford about a news item in his local paper about how he’d used campaign money for his legislative office expenses. The expenses appeared perfectly legal, but he was one of only a handful of people who were doing it at the time, so he caught some heat for it.

I suggested to Rutherford that this story might come back to haunt him if he attempted to move up to statewide office (Rutherford has been running for governor almost since he could walk).

How right he was.

Last week, a reporter tweeted that Rutherford had decided to bar reporters from his election night party.

It’s hard to blame the guy.

Rutherford’s campaign says that a Chicago Tribune reporter showed up at the home of Rutherford’s mother

at 9:30 one night to ask her highly personal questions about her son.

The campaign also confirmed reports I’d heard that the paper pursued the parents of Rutherford’s travel aide to demand to know if their son was gay after reports surfaced that the two men had shared rooms together. And the campaign confirmed that the Tribune pursued the aide’s ex-girlfriend with the same questions.

Look, Rutherford made some mistakes. Even some big mistakes.

But staking out a guy’s mom late at night and hounding the parents and ex-girlfriend of an employee with horribly inappropriate accusations seems way over the line to me. I mean, it’s not like Rutherford shot a man just to watch him die.

I always thought we were above the disgusting Hollywood paparazzi snooping level here in Illinois. I suppose I was wrong.

why people waste their money following either of these teams.

If you look back at each team’s records you will find both were awful, with very few good years.

Adding up the wins for both team for last year you will find that together they won about 120 games.

I think the team that won the [World Series] won somewhere that number of games. Moore headed to NIT, Ward to CollegeInsider.com VIEWS Dick Goss In the opinion of many, coach Larry Brown and Southern Methodist were snubbed when the NCAA tournament bracket was announced late Sunday afternoon.

Those Mustangs, whose roster includes 6-foot-8 freshman forward Ben Moore, a Bolingbrook graduate, were not among the 68 teams to hear their name called and instead will compete in the NIT as the No. 1 seed in the SMU Quadrant.

Under normal circumstances, that would have erased hopes for a direct local link to this year’s NCAA tournament.

However, the other Mustangs saved the day.

That’s right, Cal Poly, shocking winner of the Big West Conference tournament, earned a bid to the Big Dance with a 61-59 victory in the title game against Cal State Northridge and will take a 1319 record to Dayton, where it will meet Southwest Athletic Conference champion Texas Southern (19-14) at 5:40 p.m.

Wednesday in a first four matchup.

Brian Bennett, a 6-9 sophomore forward from Plainfield East and The Herald-News Player of the Year in 2012, is in Cal Poly’s regular rotation.

So if you tune in to Wednesday night’s early game, you will have a local participant to root for. If the Cinderella slipper continues to fit the Mustangs, unbeaten Wichita State will be their Friday opponent.

Bennett has appeared in all 32 games this season, starting 15. He averages 18.9 minutes, 6.1 points and 3.2 rebounds a game while shooting 46 percent from the floor and 72 percent from the free-throw line. In the win over Cal State Northridge for the conference

Also out west, there’s the story of Boise State. The Broncos (21-13) dropped a 70-67 heartbreaker to New Mexico in the Mountain West semifinals. They were not destined to qualify for the NCAA tournament unless they won the conference tournament, and they declined playing in any of the other tournaments largely because several key parts have been playing through injuries.

Among those fitting that category is 6-3 junior guard Derrick Marks (Plainfield Central). He scored 20 points to lead the Broncos in the loss to New Mexico, which many observers feel is underappre-

ciated as the No. 7 seed in the South Region.

Marks finished the season averaging 28.2 minutes, 14.9 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.5 steals. He shot 45 percent from the floor and 80 percent from the free-throw line (140 of 173).

Back to Moore and SMU (23-9), which will entertain Cal State Irvine on Wednesday night in their NIT opener.

Moore is in the Mustangs’ regular rotation, averaging 14.8 minutes, 6.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 0.9 assists and 0.5 steals. He is shooting 66 percent from the field and 63 percent from the free throw line.

Division I college basketball also offers two other postseason tournaments, the College Basketball Invita-

tional and the CollegeInsider. com Tournament. Eastern Michigan (21-14) will play in the CIT, its first postseason appearance in 16 years. A big reason is a 6-7 junior forward Karrington Ward (Lockport).

In his first season with the Eagles, Ward is averaging 29.2 minutes, 12.7 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 0.7 assists. The two-time junior college All-American is shooting 44 percent from the floor, 37 percent from 3-point range (54 of 114) and 65 percent from the free-throw line.

Ward was a Mid-American Conference third-team selection. Ironically, so was his Lockport teammate, Richaun Holmes, a 6-8 junior who had a superb season for Bowling Green (12-20).

Holmes averaged 32 min-

utes, 13.3 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.8 blocks, 1.1 steals and 0.9 assists. He shot 51 percent from the floor and 70 percent from the free-throw line.

Other area players on the Division I level included senior forward Troy Snyder (Bolingbrook) at Maryland-Eastern Shore (6-24), and junior guard Remy Roberts-Burnett (Joliet West) at Western Illinois (10-20).

Snyder averaged 31.1 minutes, 12.7 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1 steal, while shooting 51 percent from the field, 38 percent from 3 and 70 percent from the line. Roberts-Burnett had injury issues and appeared in one game over the final five weeks, 15 in all. He averaged 22.7 minutes, 4.9 points, 1.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 0.8 steals.

Local 10-year-old inspires Strike Out for Diabetes

JOLIET – The Joliet Junior College baseball team was ranked No. 1 in the preseason in NJCAA Division III. The Wolves went south a couple of times so far, to St. Louis and Tennessee, and have returned with a 3-8 record. The games were against junior college Division I opponents.

Gregg Braun, associate head coach under Wayne King and student-athlete retention specialist said, “We played pretty well for not being outside at all. Those teams we played had 15, 17, 20 games in.

We had the lead in the ninth inning and lost it three times, but we did not play bad.”

Now, the Wolves are back, hoping to be outside on a regular basis beginning in the near future.

Sometimes, however, there is more to life than pondering your ranking and when you will play your next game.

Luke Selinger, who lives in Shorewood, is a 10-year-old fourth-grader at Holy Family School. He is living with Type 1 diabetes and loves playing his favorite sport, baseball.

He has attended the JJC youth summer camp each of the past five years and made a definite impression on Braun and the JJC players and coaches who work the camp.

Under King’s direction, Braun said all JJC sports teams do something to get involved with a good cause in the community. To support Luke and raise funds for JDRF, the baseball team has scheduled Strike Out for Diabetes on Friday night at Town & Country Lanes in Joliet.

The event will begin at 8:30 p.m. with pizza and soda in the lounge at the lanes. Bowling is set to begin at 9:30 p.m.

The cost is $20 a person and includes bowling, shoes and refreshments.

“It looks like we will have 200, maybe 250, people come out,” Braun said. “At this time I can’t absolutely guarantee everyone will have a lane available, but we’re working to make it happen as best we can.

“We have a great silent auction, too. This is such a big event to the baseball team.”

“He is an absolute pleasure in our camp,” Braun said. “All the other kids love him. The guys on our team have wristbands with ‘Luke’s Legion’ on them. We decided this benefit was something our team

could do for the community, for him and for JDRF. We wanted to do our best to give back to him.”

What especially impresses Braun is that Luke, even at his young age, knows how to manage his condition, and has known for as long as he has known him.

His dad, Jim Selinger, said, “There’s not anything he does not feel he can do. Thousands of 10-year-olds deal with [Type 1 diabetes] like he does.”

Jim Selinger said Luke tried to pitch when his blood sugar dropped. Now his dad, as a coach, said, “He’s not go-

ing to get away with it. If it’s low, he could pass out. If it gets high, it could damage [an organ].”

Luke’s favorite athlete is the Cubs’ Anthony Rizzo, who had cancer.

“He sent a ball and autographed photo for this benefit,” Jim Selinger said. “I wish Ron Santo was still here. I would have loved for Luke to meet him.”

Walk-ins are welcome at the benefit.

“JDRF is a fantastic organization,” Jim Selinger said.

“I hope in Luke’s lifetime there is a cure.”

Arkush leads new Chicago Football franchise SHAW MEDIA Shaw Media and Daily Herald Media Group announced Monday the launch of Chicago Football, a print and digital sports media franchise covering high school, college and professional football. Veteran football analyst and Chicago-area sports personality Hub Arkush will spearhead the initiative.

The first edition of Chicago Football magazine hits newsstands in early April, and will focus on the Chicago Bears’ preparation for the 2014 NFL

Draft. The first edition will include exclusive interviews with head coach Marc Trestman and general manager Phil Emery.

In print, Chicago Football will be a glossy magazine published weekly during the football season, and monthly in the offseason. The publishers also plan to produce several annual football guides to be distributed nationally.

The website HubArkush. com is now ChicagoFootball. com. The new site will provide in-depth news and analysis of the Bears, along with

extensive information about the NFC North division and coverage of all 32 NFL teams.

The site also will provide analysis of local high school and college programs as the 2014 season approaches.

In addition Hub Arkush to Arkush, Chicago Football contributors include Shaw Media’s Kevin Fishbain and Tom Musick, and the Daily Herald’s premier Bears expert Bob LeGere

and fantasy football analyst John Dietz. Veteran designer and editor Bob Peters – who previously worked with Arkush at Pro Football Weekly – also has joined the Chicago Football team. Arkush indicated he is in the process of hiring additional staff.

Chicago Football will be headquartered in the Daily Herald offices in Arlington Heights.

Arkush noted the time is right for this venture.

“The NFL’s popularity is at an all-time high, and many fans have an affiliation with at least one college and

high school program while many follow more than one,” Arkush said. “Chicago Football will be unique in its look at the sport from a geographical perspective, and our singular focus will allow us to go more in-depth than other media.”

Chicago Football’s NFL Draft Preview edition will be available on newsstands April 7.

Bulls can’t find rhythm, fall to Durant, Thunder

By ANDREW SELIGMAN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Kevin Durant finished with 35 points and 12 rebounds, and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Chicago Bulls, 97-85, on Monday night.

The Thunder went on a 13-point run after the Bulls scored eight straight early in the fourth to cut the lead to one and pulled this one out after falling by 23 at home to Dallas on Sunday.

Durant ran his streak of games with 25 or more points to 32, the longest in the NBA since Michael Jordan did it in 40 in a row during the 198687 season. He also chipped in with five assists.

The Bulls never found their rhythm, converting just 34.5 percent, and settled for a sixgame split on a tough homestand that included wins over defending champion Miami and Houston.

Joakim Noah, who’s been hearing “MVP!” chants lately, had a rather quiet night, although he just missed his fourth triple-double of the season. He shot just 2 of 8 but

finished with nine points, 12 rebounds and nine assists.

Taj Gibson had 16 points and seven rebounds. Jimmy Butler scored 13, and Carlos Boozer chipped in with 12 points and 11 rebounds, but the Bulls came up short.

The Thunder were leading by nine early in the fourth when the Bulls scored eight straight points, Butler’s breakaway dunk putting a charge in the crowd and back-to-back baskets by Gibson cutting it to 76-75 with about 10 minutes remaining.

The Thunder responded by scoring 13 straight to put this one away.

GIVING OTHERS HOPE Joliet Woman’s Group starts scholarship to help families affected by Goltz syndrome

dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Like many girls her age, Christina Kluzek, 13, of Seneca, likes to hang out with her friends and chat with them on Facebook.

The difference is that Christina, who has Goltz syndrome, generally only sees them once a year, at the conference sponsored by the National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias.

That’s why Christina’s grandmother and “best friend” – Marilyn Plese of Crest Hill, the financial representative for the Joliet Woman’s Group – approached the other group members about starting a Christina Kluzek Goltz Scholarship Fund.

With $10,000 currently in that fund, families affected by Goltz syndrome will be able to attend the 2014 and 2015 conference at a free or reduced rate, Plese said.

This was Plese’s rationale: Families spend so much money on medical bills, she said, they often can’t afford the NFED conference, which is just as valuable to the affected children as it is to the parents.

Christina’s family knows this firsthand.

“It’s wonderful to see these children get together and compare hands and feet and become instant friends for life,” said Christina’s mother, Sue Kluzek of Seneca. “Now we have friends from all over the world including New York, Georgia, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Texas, Utah and even Iceland.”

Jodi Edgar Reinhardt, NFED director of communications, said she is grateful for the Joliet Woman’s Group for opening their “hearts, as well as their pocketbooks” with an extremely generous donation for a small foundation.

Reinhardt agreed with Kluzek. The NFED conference is often the only time affected children meet others like them,

The club supports many community organizations.

While the adults are attending workshops of medical topics, the children enjoy structured activities and valuable interaction with each other.

“It’s an enormous thing to realize you’re not the only one in the world with this,” Reinhardt said.

Christina, Sue Kluzek said, was five weeks premature when she was born by emergency C-section in November 2000. Christina was then taken to Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, where doctors diagnosed her with Goltz syndrome, also called focal dermal hypoplasia, Kluzek said.

Neither Kluzek nor her husband Jim Kluzek had heard of the disorder, but the news was not good.

“We were told that she would probably never walk, talk, see, hear and could possibly live in a vegetative state,” Kluzek said. “As you can imagine, this was a very difficult

time for us. If not for the support of our families, we would not have gotten through it.

They helped us by taking care of our son [Jimmy Kluzek, now 16], giving us a place to stay when needed and offering us enormous support.”

Christina was just five days old when she underwent the first of her many surgeries: A rotational skin flap to repair an area on her head that was missing skin and scalp, which required an additional surgery several weeks later, Kluzek said.

Once home, Kluzek researched Goltz syndrome and contacted NFED, which Kluzek calls “an amazing organization run by the most wonderful and caring and supportive people” for information.

“It made us feel that we were not alone in this journey,” Kluzek said. “They offered us hope.”

At four weeks, Christina was back in surgery to drain an infection on her back. At age 1, she had surgery to separate

two of her fingers and to close a cleft on her foot. At 2 years old Christina needed surgery to separate two other fingers; these also required a skin graft.

Other surgeries include insertion of ear tubes, (three times), tonsillectomy (age 3), closing a cleft on her mouth (also age 3) and the removal of papillomas (noncancerous tumors) from her face, Kluzek said.

“Christina has been very brave through all of these,” Kluzek said.

Currently, Kluzek said Christina is a “very social” seventh-grader in special education classes at Seneca Grade School, has some vision, can hear with the help of a hearing aid and talks and “gets around” with ease. Christina has, Kluzek said, “proven the doctors wrong.”

“She can read large print, read Braille, write stories using a keyboard, do math and goes to adaptive P.E.,” Kluzek said. “She is in the school choir. She participates in the

In answer to North’s takeout double, South might have expediently responded one diamond.

North was less likely to get excessively enthusiastic opposite a minor-suit bid than opposite one in a major. However, four spades can be made. (And note that five clubs doubled costs 500, more than the value of the NorthSouth game.)

North’s four-club rebid was a splinter, showing four-card spade support, a very strong hand and at most a singleton club.

Declarer’s basic plan should be to lose only two hearts and one club. He should aim to take four spades, one heart, four diamonds and the trick-two ruff on the board. So, after trumping the club king low, South should draw trumps, then play the ace and another heart. Suppose West takes the second heart and leads the club jack. Declarer ruffs and must finesse in diamonds – but how?

Since he might – and here does – need to take three diamond finesses, he must first lead his diamond nine – the lowest card in his hand that can hold the trick, assuming the finesse works. After winning with the diamond nine, South runs the diamond jack, plays a diamond to dummy’s queen, and claims those 10 tricks.

Pregnant sister facing jail arouses response Dear Abby: Your answer to “Heartbroken in Alabama” (Jan. 2) did not go deep enough. The pregnant sister, “Nicole,” who is facing prison time, needs to contact the Department of Children’s Services in her county/state as soon as possible. They will oversee the placement of her child if said child is born in jail or prison.

Multiple treatments, ways to help vaginal dryness Dear Doctor K: I’ve been bothered by vaginal dryness. Sex is painful. My doctor believes it’s vaginal atrophy due to menopause. Can you tell me more about this condition? How is it treated?

Dear Reader: During a woman’s reproductive years, the lining of the vagina is kept moist and lubricated in part by female hormones made by the ovaries – particularly estrogen. With the start of menopause, estrogen levels decline. This often leads to vaginal atrophy: The lining of the vagina becomes thin and dry.

Natural menopause is not the only reason for estrogen levels to drop and vaginal atrophy to develop. Breastfeeding, surgical removal of the ovaries and certain medical treatments can also do it.

As you’ve experienced, the reduced lubrication of the vagina can lead to painful sexual intercourse. It can also cause vaginal itching or burning. You may experience light bleeding after sex. Such light vaginal bleeding following sex is not a worry, as long as it does not also occur at times unrelated to sex.

Vaginal atrophy is best treated with estrogen therapy. This is available in many forms. Some forms apply estrogen directly

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff to the lining of the vagina. For example, estrogen creams or suppositories are inserted into the vagina using an applicator. A vaginal ring can be placed in the vagina for three months. It slowly releases estrogen directly to the vaginal tissues.

Vaginal estrogen preparations produce very low levels of estrogen in the blood. They are the safest way to treat vaginal atrophy with estrogen. But some of my patients do not like applying creams or placing devices in the vagina, and prefer something easier.

One alternative some women prefer is an estrogen pill. Another treatment is an estrogen patch that is applied to the skin once or twice a week. The pill and the patch deliver estrogen into the blood. When the blood reaches the lining of the vagina, the estrogen in the blood causes the lining to become thicker and more moist.

As you’re likely aware, studies have found that estrogen therapy given in pill form may slightly

increase the risk of having a stroke. This is particularly true if the estrogen pill also contains progestin sex hormones, the usual form of hormone therapy.

However, doctors still recommend short-term estrogen pill therapy to treat temporary symptoms of menopause. Your doctor will use the lowest dose possible to relieve your symptoms. In my experience, the lowest dose (typically half of the usual dose) is often very effective, and less likely to cause side effects.

You may prefer to avoid estrogen altogether. If so, try a water-soluble lubricant. Lubricants relieve vaginal dryness, moisten vaginal tissues and can help make sex less painful. They can be purchased without a prescription at most pharmacies or grocery stores.

Regular sexual activity also can help to prevent symptoms.

This is because sexual intercourse improves blood circulation to the vagina. This helps to keep vaginal tissues healthy.

Mother angered by child’s earlier school start time Dr. Wallace: Last semester I was selected to be a school patrol monitor. My mother didn’t like the idea because I had to report to school a half-hour earlier than the rest of the kids. This meant that my mom also had to get up 30 minutes earlier than usual. This semester I was appointed patrol monitor captain because I had done a super job. When I told my mom, she was furious and wanted me to quit because she was tired of getting up early.

Please tell me what I should do. I really want to be captain more than anything in the world.

Dear Penny: If mom has to get up early to make your breakfast and pack your lunch, you can convince her that you are old enough to fend for yourself. You can make your lunch the night before and refrigerate it. Then set out what you need for breakfast, (leave the milk in the fridge) and you’ll be ready to go.

Mom should be proud of your accomplishment. It’s an honor to be selected the captain. You might ask your teacher to call your mom and let her know that you are a superb monitor and that the school needs and appreciates your strong leadership. Much too often parents are not aware of their child’s superior deeds until someone (usually an adult) points it out.

Dr. Wallace: When I was in sixth grade (four years ago) I had a really good friend who happened to be a boy. My family moved away, so we haven’t seen each other since then.

Recently, my family and I returned to this town to visit friends, and I decided to call him.

“Lunch Hour” takes a close look at what kids eat at school and how that food gets to the table.

‘Lunch Hour’ documentary reveals the empty calories of school meals

By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post Following in the activist tradition of such Participant Media films as “An Inconvenient Truth” and “Waiting for Superman,” James Costa’s documentary “Lunch Hour” seeks to wake up viewers to the national epidemic of unhealthy eating and how the school lunch program is creating a new generation of overweight, diabetic and otherwise overfed and undernourished kids.

The images are striking: Taking his cameras into school cafeterias, Costa finds Styrofoam trays haphazardly heaped with fried chicken patties, grey-ish mystery meat and, always, that ubiquitous carton of milk. (Ever wonder what a “spent hen” is? Believe me, you don’t want to know.) Tracing the school lunch program to Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the Depression, Costa reveals that today’s school lunch

staples are artifacts of a time when school kids were getting too few calories, rather than too many.

They’re also the result of aggressive lobbying by the food business, a confusing role for the USDA (which both regulates and promotes the agriculture industry) and the steady incursion of fast-food marketing into school lunch programs.

Longtime food expert Marion Nestle, as well as media stars Rachael Ray and Robin Quivers, are on hand to provide cogent analysis of the problem. Luckily, just when viewers are likely to feel hopeless (or tempted to run straight to school and yank their kids out of there), “Lunch Hour” shines a light on some encouraging pilot programs in New York and California, where parents, chefs and enlightened school leaders are making exciting inroads in introducing kids to fresh, healthy, non-processed

crunchables.

“Lunch Hour” has been lucidly filmed, although even at a sleek hourand-15-minutes running time, the talking heads begin to weigh it down.

But the things they are saying matter, and “Lunch Hour” does its job as an effective, informative, if not formally scintillating example of advocacy filmmaking.

Taking another page from Participant, Costa ends with a list of recommendations for concerned parents, who with luck will heed his advice.

As Ray says, this is that rare problem that can be fixed within our lifetimes, if we simply put down the Whoppers and Big Gulps and decide to do something about it.
