PLAINFIELD – A Plainfield high school teacher arrested for a criminal sexual assault charge in February was unanimously dismissed by school board members on Monday.

At the Plainfield School District 202 board meeting, board members voted to dismiss Brian D. Smith, 32, a Plainfield Central High School science teacher who was arrested Feb. 26 for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old female student. He was charged with one count of criminal sexual assault, a Class 1 felony.

“I think the record shows that we don’t tolerate that type of behavior and we need to sever ties, and let the court system take its course,” said Lane

Abrell, Plainfield school superintendent, after the meeting.

Since Smith’s arrest, school officials prohibited Smith from school grounds and directed him to have no contact with school staff or students.

Smith had been employed with the district since August 2014 and his salary was $40,463.

Smith’s bond was set on Feb. 27 at $600,000 with 10 percent needed to post bail. As a condition of Smith’s court bond, he also was directed to have no internet activity with children under the age of 18, nor possess any firearms or dangerous weapons.

A preliminary hearing for Smith has been scheduled for March 26.

Other board matters

Michelle Smith, board vice president, gave an update to

the board on last week’s testing for Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, or PARCC. She said there were no major technology issues. Only about 30 students out of 19,000 who tested refused to take the PARCC test, she said.

School board members also unanimously approved slight increases to more than 20 school fee items for the 2015-16 year. Many of those fees cover textbooks, registration, breakfast and lunch costs.

High school textbook and registration fees will increase by $6, while breakfast and lunch fees will increase by 5 cents. Fees for some grades kindergarten through eighth will have increases ranging between $2 to $5. Breakfast and lunch fees for elementary and middle school will only in-

Plainfield Village Board tables farmer’s market relocation

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plans to move the seasonal Historic Downtown Farmer’s Market to the new Plainfield Riverfront property were halted after trustees said the park isn’t yet ready for the weekly summer event.

The Village Board tabled the location change Monday night until the next meeting with a 4-1 vote after Trustee Margie Bonuchi said the riverfront location on Countryman Drive was damaged because of parking during the Irish Fest on Sunday and other use of the land.

Trustee Paul Fay was the lone vote against tabling the move.

“I don’t think this is a good idea,” said Bonuchi, who serves on the board of directors of the Plainfield Riverfront Foundation. She suggested the farmer’s market should stay put at its location last year at the empty property on the corner of Route 59 and Lockport Street.

Bonuchi noted that the foundation has been planting

in the area and that the conditions were not acceptable for use for the farmer’s market.

Bonuchi also noted that the village didn’t have a plan for severe weather occurrences at the location.

“I would love to see it move that way eventually, but I don’t think we’re at the point of having this there,” she said.

“We don’t want to damage something we just created,” Trustee Bill Lamb said.

Village Planner Michael Garrigan said the organizers for the farmer’s market and the current owner of the Route 59-Lockport Street property have been receptive to the idea of hosting the farmer’s market at the same location.

Budget and streets

The Village Board also passed its fiscal 2015-16 budget, which is balanced at $47.9 million. The plan includes no hires, but transitions three part-time positions to fulltime.

The general fund budget is $22.5 million, which includes a 20 percent decrease in estimated income tax revenue due to Gov. Rauner’s plan to share

half of the Local Government Distributive Fund with the state.

Village Administrator Brian Murphy said while Rauner’s plan still stands at 50 percent, the village is anticipating it to drop to a 20 percent decrease.

Property tax revenue is decreasing by $240,002 because of the village freeze on the tax rate.

“What I’m most proud of this particular budget is this is the sixth year we have kept property tax revenues the same or reduced them,” Murphy said. “We’re the only one in Will County that can say that.”

The total water and sewer budget is at $16.2 million and $6 million in capital improvement fund expenses, according to the budget.

Trustees also approved the incorporation of the Complete Streets Plan into the five-year transportation plan.

The Complete Streets Plan includes elements of pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure improvement along with traffic calming elements, especially along Meadow Lane.

School officials said in a news release that based on projected enrollments, the new fees should produce about $90,000 in new revenue if it’s all collected. They said however the school district usually receives about 66 percent of what is owed.

School board members also unanimously approved donations for several Plainfield schools totaling more than $5,600. The donations came from various individuals, organizations and programs, such as Exxon Mobile Foundation’s Volunteer Involvement program.

The donations were made for landscaping plants, 18 document cameras, classroom technology, the Buddy Bench project and educational equipment.

Reel tradition

Local musicians celebrate Irish culture

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet’s Irish-American heritage comes out in full force around St. Patrick’s Day. Parishioners gather in their churches to praise St. Patrick’s fifth century deeds, families talk about their historic and current Irish roots and pubs keep the Guinness flowing.

But in the background of every gathering is music, from traditional Irish jigs and reels to Irish rock.

Local musicians with a deep respect for Will County’s Irish-American community descend upon Joliet to celebrate every St. Patrick’s Day. “Without music, it would just be corned beef day,” said Mike Trizna, co-owner of Chicago Street Pub and Grill with his wife, Kathy Trizna.

“All these Irish musicians from Joliet, they come back for St. Patrick’s Day,” said Mary Hatfield, a violinist from Joliet.

Mike Trizna Chicago Street Pub and Grill co-owner liet in a musical family. She formed a fiddle duet called the Hatfield Sisters with her sister, Anne Hatfield, and they have performed Irish medleys for crowds in many local venues, from local pubs to the Rialto Square Theatre.

“The Hatfield sisters have grown right in front of our eyes since they were kids,” Trizna said.

Hatfield said she has noticed a unique bond within the local Irish-American community.

“Will County is such a tight-knit community,” she said. “Everybody knows everybody else. St. Patrick’s Day is not just one night in the year. It’s all a whole year of music and dance and culture.”

Today, both the Hatfields

are professionals. Anne, a University of St. Francis alumnus, tours and performs across the world with Michael Flatley’s “Lord of the Dance.”

Mary lives in Dublin, Ireland, and is an academic in the history department at Trinity College Dublin.

The sisters have formed a band called Déanach (pronounced JAE-nuch) with Irish and British musicians.

The group performed at the Chicago Street Pub and Grill on Saturday night and Traditions Restaurant and Pub in Joliet on Sunday. They also played Saturday evening at the Irish American Society of County Will’s annual Celtic Celebration Dinner.

“Americans and all are quite traditional,” said Enda Kiernan, an Irish accordionist with Déanach. “There’s more of an appreciation over here [for traditional Irish music]. Back in Ireland, this is all very commonplace.”

“It’s a breath of fresh air,” said Niamh Taggart, an Irish flute and whistle player with the group.

Classical perspective

For Joliet classical violinist Casey McGrath, playing traditional Irish music, such as the Kesh Jig or renditions of sea shanties also is a breath of fresh air because it taps into a different vein of musical ingenuity than she is used to.

“The folk genre seems to be doing something classical music isn’t,” McGrath said. “It connects with the audience.

olinist, I try to carry that into my performance.”

McGrath, who works with the music departments for USF, Lewis University and Joliet Junior College, went to Ireland during her senior year of high school through a scholarship offered by the Irish American Society of County Will.

City Council urged to pass minority participation law

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Willie Sellers again is urging Joliet to develop an ordinance that would put more minorities to work on public projects.

Sellers, a trucking contractor who is president of Black Contractors of Will County, also said too much city work is going to people who don’t live in Joliet. He blamed the lack of minority participation in part on heavy use of union labor.

“I feel like a lot of us have been left out,” Sellers said at the Monday workshop meeting of the City Council. Saying minorities make up “about 45 percent of the people in town” and “pay about 45 percent of the taxes,” Sellers said. “It’s

time for us to have some of the opportunities.”

Sellers said a review of city contracts using union labor showed “less than 5 percent of the people in the unions are from Joliet.”

The City Council agreed to take up the matter at its Legislative Committee.

It’s not the first time Sellers’ push for a minority contractor ordinance was referred to a committee.

He noted that the same thing happened four years ago after the last major mayoral and city council election. “In a few more weeks,” Sellers said, “we’re going to have another election.”

But some council members suggested a solution already is in the works.

“We’re hoping by the next council meeting we’re going to adopt this and move it forward.”

Jim McFarland Joliet City Council Councilman Jim McFarland said an ordinance is being developed that would give preference points to companies in Will and Kendall counties bidding on city work.

“We’re hoping by the next council meeting we’re going to adopt this and move it forward,” he said.

Sellers after the meeting, however, said he believed the ordinance would help big local

contractors and not necessarily small, minority-owned companies.

Sellers plans to present the Legislative Committee with ordinances used by other Illinois cities, including Champaign and Rockford, to foster more minority participation in city contracts. Sellers said he presented the same ordinances to past city administrators.

More debate controversy

Dick Schuster, president of Joliet Community Television, also spoke to the council, saying he received “a very disturbing and harassing phone call from a city councilman.”

Schuster did not identify the councilman but later acknowledged when asked that it was Larry Hug who tried to influ-

ence his decision whether or not to televise a mayoral debate Thursday.

“Channel 6 volunteers are not employees of the city, and it’s up to them whether something is going to be taped or now,” Schuster said.

Hug did not respond at the meeting. But when asked later said, “Obviously, Mr. Schuster remembers our conversation differently than me.”

Hug’s involvement in the decision whether to tape the debate or not was reported last week, when he called city officials who initially said it could not be televised because it was a political event and then later changed their position. Schuster decided not to tape the debate, but another JCTV volunteer did.

Deal close on sale of Bill Jacobs auto dealerships in Joliet

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Bill Jacobs car dealerships in Joliet are in the process of being sold, according to a statement from the owner.

A completion of the deal likely will mark the end of the longest lasting dealership brand in Joliet. Bill Jacobs Chevrolet goes back to 1955.

In a letter to employees, Linda Jacobs described the past 4½ years as having been “extremely difficult” since the death of her husband, Bill Jacobs Jr. According to the letter, Bill Jacobs Chevrolet, Cadillac, Mazda and Subaru would be sold to John Crane, president and part-owner of the Hawk Auto Group. Hawk bought D’Arcy Volkswagen in December.

Bill Jacobs Kia would be sold to Scott Falcone, owner of World Hyundai in Matteson.

Crane on Monday said he could not comment on the matter. Falcone could not be immediately reached for comment.

Both Crane and Falcone live in Will County. Crane lives in Homer Glen. According to the World Hyundai website, Falcone lives in Frankfort.

In her letter, Jacobs said sale agreements have been submitted to the manufacturers.

Jacobs said the death of her husband “left me in charge of his estate and the business.”

“I quickly found myself responsible for running several complex car dealerships with hundreds of employees, dealing with multiple car manufacturers concerned about the dealerships and fighting with lenders demanding repayment on all of the company and personal debt,” the letter states.

“Needless to say, it was an overwhelming and exhausting experience.”

Jacobs added, “Many presumed that I would sell as soon as Bill passed. In fact, I have had many offers from individuals who tried to persuade me they would take good care of the family legacy. But I said no because I wasn’t convinced that they would or could pre-

She said both Crane and Falcone are successful and respected. Jacobs also noted that Crane “has a deep connection with Joliet.”

“My family has a long his-

tory in the car business and in Joliet,” Crane said.

His father was sales manager at two Joliet dealerships – John Bays Toyota, which is now Thomas Toyota, and Rich Crandall Chrysler-Plymouth.

Hawk Auto Group also has dealerships in Bridgeview, Oak Lawn, Forest Park and Niles.

Bill Jacobs in 2013 sold another one of its dealerships in Plainfield, which is now Webb Chevrolet.

LOCKPORT – A man was arrested Saturday after allegedly menacing his ex-girlfriend.

At 5:58 p.m., police were notified a 37-year-old woman was being held against her will in an apartment in the 500 block of Parkview Lane, police said in a news release.

“Upon arrival, the officers were unable to make contact with anyone inside the apartment, either through the phone or at the door,” the news release said.

“Fearing that the female may have been in danger, officers forced entry into the apartment.”

Officers reportedly found the woman was being held in a bedroom by her ex-boyfriend, Christopher E. Cihon, 45. Cihon was arrested on charges of unlawful restraint, violating an order of protection and violating bail bond conditions.

Neither Cihon nor the woman were injured during the incident, police said.

QUICK NEWS JOLIET – Since 2007, more than $26 million has gone back to Will County budgets through a special collections program on unpaid fines and fees run through the Will County Circuit Court Clerk’s office, according to a news release.

To date, $8.77 million has been turned over to the Will County general fund, $5.68 million returned to Will County municipalities and $2.09 million to Will County special funds, according to the release.

The circuit clerk’s office has returned $1.85 million to the city of Joliet, $647,525 to the village of Bolingbrook, $234,545 to New Lenox and $380,898

to Plainfield. Agencies that also seen have income from the office’s collection efforts are Joliet Junior College, Will County Forest Preserve and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

“I continue to urge the public to pay their debts now to avoid future collection efforts and the additional 30 percent collection fee,” Circuit Clerk Pam McGuire said.

JOLIET – Vinay Panchal takes pride in owning a Joliet-based Dairy Queen, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.

Panchal has owned the Dairy Queen at 2310 Essington Road for five years. It’s one of three stores in Joliet. The first Dairy Queen opened in Joliet in 1940, according to the company’s website.

In commemoration of its 75th year, Dairy Queen stores offered free small vanilla cones to customers on Monday for Free Cone Day. The stores also accepted donations for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

“We are so grateful to own a Dairy Queen in the city where the first-ever opened,” Panchal said.

Dairy Queen’s history dates back to the 1940s, when there were fewer than 10 stores. By the end of the decade, the number of stores grew to 1,446.

According to the company’s website, Dairy Queen has more than 6,000 restaurants in the U.S., Canada and 18 other countries.

Dairy Queen was located on Chicago Street in Joliet, said Pam Owens, Joliet City Center Partnership executive director. She said she would love for the store to return to Chicago Street and that it would good to have company memorabilia downtown.

“I think a lot of people don’t realize the first Dairy Queen was located in Joliet,” she said. “I think that’s a really cool fact.”

Man shot by Joliet police facing multiple charges

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A man shot by Joliet police officers after allegedly threatening them with rifles last week now is facing charges.

Joliet Deputy Chief Al Roechner said Raymond E. Hansen, 41, was released Sunday afternoon from Loyola Medical Center Raymond in Maywood E. Hansen and booked into the Will County jail.

Hansen is charged with two counts of aggravated assault and three counts of domestic battery, according to jail records.

Police said Hansen and his wife were arguing about 7:50 p.m. March 10 at a residence in the 2400 block of Rockwood Drive in Joliet.

When the fight turned physical, the woman left the residence and ran around the corner, where she called police and waited, investigators said. Two officers arrived a few minutes later and approached the house from opposite sides of the front yard, according to police.

Hansen reportedly walked out of the front door while carrying two semi-automatic assault rifles.

“When he pointed the rifle at one of the officers, the other [officer] yelled at him to drop the weapon and he turned toward that officer,” Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton told The Herald-News last week.

Joliet police said Hansen has no prior criminal history.

The officers involved remain on administrative leave while the incident is investigated, which is department policy.

This incident was the second officer-involved shooting in Joliet this month. On March 2, Shaquille C. Barrow, 20, was allegedly reaching for a loaded handgun in his pocket when he was shot and killed by a police officer near First Avenue and Richards Street.

Barrow and Shawn M. Miller, 21, had allegedly robbed and threatened to shoot a woman who was following them in her car. Miller remains at-large while the investigation into that incident continues.

JOLIET – Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots’ office seeks election judges to man polling places during the April 7 election.

Five election judges are appointed to each precinct, three representing the Democrat or Republican parties. The other two will represent the opposing party, according to the Will County Clerk’s office.

The number of Republican and Democratic election judges at each polling place is determined by the average party turnout in the three most recent Illinois governor’s races.

Before assignment to a precinct, election judges are required to attend a two-hour training class. After this, judges must be trained every two years.

Providence Catholic High School juniors Catherine Spesia and Johanna Bastas were introduced at the IASCW annual Celtic Celebration Dinner held Saturday at the Knights of Columbus on Infantry Drive in Joliet, according to a news release from the organization. They will spend four weeks in Ireland this summer.

President Mic Brophy welcomed members and guests to Saturday’s dinner, while Vice President Chris Schaal led the room in the Pledge of Allegiance and past-president William J. Ferguson provided the invocation. IASCW scholars from 2014, Jessica Weiss and Katie Andrews, delivered a PowerPoint presentation of their ILE experience.

Entertainment included: the Joliet Fire Department Drum and Pipe Corp; Irish step dancing by the Keigher Academy of Irish Dance; and traditional live Irish music provided by The Hatfield Sisters, accompanied

and Mary Hatfield are locally grown musicians with deep roots in traditional Irish music.

“I heard a very gut-wrenching ‘pipe to head’ sound. You can’t describe it as anything else,” Mitchem testified. “As he brought the pipe up for a second strike, I shot him twice.”

Davis was struck in the upper left arm and back and spent a week in the hospital. Limacher, who was wearing a police ballcap, received nine staples to close the severe laceration to his head, he testified.

“Why didn’t you use your Taser?” Lenzie asked Mitchem.

“The pipe was deadly force. I’d use deadly force against deadly force,” the seven-year-veteran answered.

The trial is scheduled to continue later this week.

Man facing second murder trial wants county to pay for expert witness

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A man who will get a second trial for a 2007 slaying at a Peotone Township horse farm wants the county to pay $6,000 for an expert witness.

Martin Elvis Gomez, 30, told Judge Carmen Goodman on Monday that cellphone records were “altered” and could be reMartin Elvis v i e w e d b y a Virginia-based Gomez analyst to show where a phone call was made in relation to a cellular tower.

“The state is planning to use this evidence – phone records – to show the defendant was in Peotone,” said Gomez, who is acting as his own attorney. “They’re going to say I was in Peotone committing the murder.”

lamie, 58, was found May 10, 2007, near a fence on his 10acre farm on South Harlem Avenue, just north of Peotone Road. Gomez, who had once lived in a trailer at the farm, allegedly stabbed his former landlord 111 times, slit his throat and stole $1,200.

Salamie owned Sight and Sound Novelty Shop in Westmont and raised racehorses.

Following a 2011 trial, Gomez was convicted of Salamie’s murder and sentenced to 55 years in prison.

He received a separate 19year prison sentence for trying to hire a gang member to kill an ex-girlfriend who testified against him.

But the appellate court found while Judge Richard Schoenstedt warned Gomez about the risks of representing himself, he did not give required admonishments and ordered a new trial.

Goodman admonished Gomez several times Monday and said she will consider whether an expert’s review

could offer a different interpretation of the phone records by his next court appearance.

“They aren’t altered records, but the [evidence] now given to the defendant has [prosecutors’] notes written on them from the first trial,” Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Steven Platek said during court.

Gomez used $5,000 in public funds to hire an entomologist for his first trial and said “the county treasury” could be used to pay for the cellphone review. On Monday, Gomez cited case law to support an indigent person’s right to hire experts for criminal defense.

Before Goodman took the bench, Gomez told Platek he wanted to go “shark fishing.”

“Wouldn’t you settle to go for any kind of fishing?” the prosecutor asked.

“No. I don’t want to go for an ordinary [kind, like] catfishing,” Gomez said. “A shark’s for the most experienced.”

JOLIET – Lawyers say a man was insane when he struck a Bolingbrook cop with a steel pole before he was shot by another officer.

Levan C. Davis, 22, is charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery for the Aug. 7, 2013, incident. He faces Levan C. a bench trial Davis this week before Judge Dave Carlson.

“We will be using the insanity defense. Dr. Randi Zoot will testify Mr. Davis couldn’t appreciate the criminality of his conduct,” Assistant Will County Public Defender Todd Lenzie said.

Robert Davis testified he called police that morning to his home in the 300 block of Walnut Circle because his son was off his medication and agitated over a missing remote control.

Robert Davis spoke briefly with officers Jason Mitchem and Eli Limacher in the driveway before Levan Davis opened the garage door.

Limacher said he told the young man to put his hands on a nearby car and Limacher moved forward to grab Davis’ right hand when Davis refused. Levan Davis turned and grabbed a hollow 4-foot galvanized pipe near the garage door before Limacher could back up.

OBITUARIES EUGENE ALLEN Eugene “Gene” Allen, 85, of Davenport, Iowa, died Saturday, March 14, 2015, at Genesis East Rusholme Street, Davenport.

Services in celebration of his life will be held at 10:00 a.m.

Friday, March 20th at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport.

Gene was born in 1929, in Bellwood, IL to James and Florence Allen.

On October 28, 1950, he married Marilyn Joyce Scott. On April 16, 1987, he married the love of his life, Rheta Wolfe in Davenport.

After serving his country in the U.S. Navy, Gene began a long Civil Service career, first with the US Postal Service sorting mail on the trains and then for the US Army Materiel Command, first in Joliet and later transferring to the Rock Island Arsenal.

He retired in 1984 after more than 34 years. While living in East Joliet, he served as a volunteer fireman for more than a decade and was active on the school board, Fraternal Order of the Moose, Joliet VFW, USS Cabot Association and Preston Heights (Joliet) Lighting District.

Born on September 27, 1926, Glen was the star quarterback at Gibson City High School and a lifelong football fan. Married to Leota Davis on December 16, 1951. A WWII Veteran serving in the Army Band. Previously employed with the Illinois Central Railroad and retired from Caterpillar after 37 years of service. Member of the Local IBEW for Caterpillar.

CHARLES J. GRAHAM Charles J. Graham, age 88, passed away Saturday, March 14, 2015, at Joliet Area Community Hospice after a short battle with cancer.

Born in Joliet to the late Charles J. Sr. and Marguerite (Horrigan) Graham, a lifelong resident.

Survived by his son, Kevin Graham of Joliet; nieces, Sara (Sally) Niedrich, Jean Bagel and Jane Crnkovic; and nephews, John Graham and Jim Graham.

Preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Marjorie A. (nee Tynon) Graham who recently lost her own short battle with cancer January 1st; brother, John Graham; and nephew, Scott Graham.

Chuck, as he was known to his friends, went to St. Raymond grade school and graduated from Joliet Catholic High School. He went on to the University of New Mexico and finished his degree at the University of Illinois. A U.S. Army veteran

serving two tours of duty during WWII and the Korean War. Formerly employed by the City of Joliet in the engineering department, he also served at the Joliet Arsenal as a technical illustrator, Chanute Air Force Base, and the U.S. Great Lakes Navel Training as an as-built draftsman.

Chuck was a talented and accomplished painter, loved photography and travel. He and his loving wife made many trips around America covering almost all 50 states and abroad traveling to over five continents. He even parasailed in Mexico at the ripe age of 80. He would edit his travel videos and his wife Marge would narrate them for Joliet Volunteer Community Television Channel 6 where he volunteered as a cameraman and editor. He was a feature writer for the Herald News Common Sense column for a number of years.

A man of eclectic interests, he had a great sense of fun and found creative ways to contribute to art, history and community. As a younger man he loved odd cars, owning a series of Volkswagen Beetles, and occasionally acquiring and repairing other automotive oddities, such as a rare Isetta, with a door that passengers entered from the vehicle’s front. He enjoyed going to car shows and until this year never missed the Chicago Auto Show.

He was an expert in WWII aircraft and loved anything aeronautical. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, attended many air shows including the Oshkosh, Wisconsin air show, and never passed up an opportunity to take a ride in a small aircraft or helicopter.

He was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church where he served as a Eucharistic minister, an usher, and a member of the Paulite’s group.

Funeral Services for Charles J. Graham will be held Thursday, March 19, 2015, at 9:15 a.m. from the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet to St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Interment Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, with full military honors under the auspices of the U.S. Army.

David Hadaway, age 64, born Paul David Hadaway, August 28, 1950, longtime resident of California formerly of Joliet, IL, died March 6, 2015, at Community Hospital of San Bernadino, CA, after a brief illness.

David, a selfless, good provider and giving soul was also a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend. David weaved his passion for sports and music equally throughout his life.

As an all star baseball player (little league through high school) David had his first “California experience” as a member of the (Joliet) Ingall’s Park Pony League All Stars in 1965 when they won second place in the nation at the Pony League World Series held in National City, California. The following year 1966 David was the first player to hit a homerun (opening day) in the inaugural season of the newly constructed Joliet

Colt League diamond.

Around that same time in the mid 1960’s David and his younger brother Dan (along with other musician friends) formed their first band the “Stitches ‘n’ Time.” The “Stitches” became popular playing high school dances, teen clubs, parties, etc... with their (heavily loaded with Stones music) repertoire.

In the early 1970’s David relocated to southern California. During his tenures in the trucking industry and as a successful salesman, David’s priority was raising and providing for his three sons. His love of the ocean and honing his skills as an avid golfer were testimony that David had settled in as a “genuine Californian.”

One never had to ask where he stood when it came to his politics... David was a proud American!

David’s family and closest friend(s) will all remember dearly, the family reunion, summer of 2014. One touching day of sharing love, music and memories. One day we wish we could relive again and never end. We all loved you David. Gone but always in our hearts. May God rest your sweet soul until we meet again.

Durbin backs Emanuel bid but says contest depends on turnout

CHICAGO – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said he’s backing Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s re-election bid in the runoff contest next month.

However, the Democrat said the election will depend on turnout.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported Durbin spoke to reporters Monday in Chicago.

Emanuel is seeking a second term but was unable to capture the outright majority needed in last month’s election. He now faces an April 7 runoff with Cook County Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, who received the most votes after Emanuel.

Durbin says he sees “glimmers of hope” in both camps and while he supports Emanuel, he has friends working for Garcia’s campaign.

2 universities urge Obama to put library in Chicago

CHICAGO – The two Chicago universities in the competition for President Barack Obama’s library came together Monday to send a message to the White House: Choose either one of us, just don’t pick New York.

Officials from the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois at Chicago, as well as Mayor Rahm Emanuel and others gathered in a crowded hotel ballroom for what was billed a “Unity Breakfast.” Speakers took turns reminding the president and the first lady where their roots are and implored them to “bring it on home,” as Carol Adams, a member of the University of Chicago’s Obama library community advisory board, put it.

The effort to convince Obama to build his library in the city and not at the University of Hawaii or New York’s Columbia University has been a major story in Chicago – and has even made its way into next month’s mayoral election between Emanuel and Cook County Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia.

Emanuel has pushed hard for the library and was dealt what was widely seen as a blow to his campaign when it was reported earlier this month that the Obamas would delay announcing their decision until after the April 7 runoff election.

Anita Hill cancels U of Illinois visit over professor’s suit

URBANA – Anita Hill has canceled a planned visit to the University of Illinois over a lawsuit against the school from a professor whose job offer was rescinded.

In a column on The Huffington Post, Hill said the lawsuit from Steven Salaita “erodes the possibility of the open conversation I had hoped to have.” The school took back his job offer after he posted profane, anti-Israel messages on Twitter.

Hill said the dispute between the school and Salaita reflects a tension between “the prohibition against language that furthers a hostile environment and freedom of expression.”

Hill testified against Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas

as part of Senate confirmation hearings in 1991, accusing him of sexual harassment.

Hill, now a professor at Brandeis University, was set to give the keynote address at the Faculty Women of Color in the Academy conference next month at the Urbana-Champaign campus.

Chicago fundraiser an early show of support for Kirk

CHICAGO – Illinois Republican leaders turned out Monday for an early fundraiser for U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk’s 2016 re-election campaign, a show of support that appeared aimed in part at trying to dissuade potential GOP primary challengers.

Gov. Bruce Rauner, a half-dozen members of the state’s congressional delegation and some of the party’s biggest Illinois donors were among the GOP faithful who appeared at a downtown Chicago club, some paying up to $15,000 a ticket.

The event raised more than $200,000, Kirk said.

Barack Obama, is a top target of Democrats as they try to win back the Senate. Many also consider him to be among the most vulnerable, coming from a Democratic leaning state in a presidential election year.

CHICAGO – Services have been arranged for longtime civil rights activist the Rev. Willie Barrow.

Rainbow PUSH headquarters will hold a celebration of Barrow’s life at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Visitation for Barrow will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Vernon Park Church of God The funeral service will be at 7 p.m. that evening. The funeral procession will leave Vernon Park for Oakwood Cemetery at 10 a.m.

Barrow died Thursday at the age of 90. She was on the front lines of the civil rights movement, working for the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., participating in the 1963 March on Washington and in later years focusing concern on Chicago’s gun violence.

Gene was a member of the East Cooper Outboard Motor Club and was an avid golfer. Gene deeply loved his family and friends. He enjoyed a good laugh and was known for his quick wit.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Marilyn Joutras Rakar of Mount Pleasant, SC; his children, Dena Hallman and her husband, Ted of Mount Pleasant, SC, and Tim Rakar and his wife, Leslie of Mount Pleasant, SC; his brother, James Rakar and his wife, Georgianna of Casa Grande, AZ; and his grandchildren, Jaci Luif, Donald Dennis, Dustin Dennis, Sara Bobbitt, Morgan Rakar, Cole Rakar, and Hillary Van Orsdel; and his five great-grandchildren. Gene is also survived by several cousins.

GOP eyes hike in war funds to skirt Pentagon limits

WASHINGTON – House Republicans are considering adding tens of billions of dollars to President Barack Obama’s request for overseas military operations in an effort to get around tight limits on Pentagon spending. The move comes as Republicans are set to unveil their latest budget plan.

Obama requested $51 billion for Pentagon operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere, but GOP aides said Monday party leaders

Obama’s plan to spend $38 billion above the limits for the budget year beginning in October.

GOP defense hawks have promised not to support any budget that doesn’t at least match Obama’s $561 billion request for defense, but a 2011 budget “sequestration” law imposes a $523 billion limit on the defense budget – an automatic cut of $54 billion below previously agreed levels.

What it means if Fed no longer ‘patient’ on rates

WASHINGTON – For the Federal Reserve, patience no longer may be a virtue.

Surrounding the Fed’s policy meeting this week is the widespread expectation it no longer will use the word “patient” to describe its stance on raising interest rates from record lows The big question is: What will that mean?

Many economists said the dropping of “patience” would signal that the Fed plans to start raising rates in June to reflect a steadily strengthening U.S. job market. Others foresee no rate hike before September. And a few predict no increase before year’s end at the earliest.

Complicating the decision is a surging U.S. dollar, which is keeping inflation far below the Fed’s target rate and is posing a threat to U.S. corporate profits.

Starving sea lion pups ending up on beaches in California

By GILLIAN FLACCUS The Associated Press LAGUNA BEACH, Calif.

– The starving sea lion pup was so tiny it looked like a rock at the base of the seaside cliff until it struggled to raise its head as humans approached.

It bleated weakly as volunteer Brennan Slavik eased it into a crate for transport to a rescue center, where it peered from a child’s playpen with woeful eyes made enormous by an emaciated frame.

At almost a year, the pup weighed just 23 pounds – a third of what it should – and staff quietly took it to a private room, euthanized it and moved on.

It’s a scenario playing out daily in California this year as rescue centers struggle to keep up with hundreds of sick and starving sea lion pups washing up along the coast. More than 1,650 pups have been rescued since January from beaches, but also from inside public restrooms, behind buildings and along railroad tracks.

It’s not unusual to have some sea lions wash up each spring as the pups leave their mothers. But so far, the number of stranded babies is more than five times greater than in 2013, the worst season in recent memory.

“These animals are coming in really desperate.

They’re at the end of life.

They’re in a crisis ... and not all animals are going to make it,” said Keith A. Matassa, executive director at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center, which has taken in 285 pups this winter compared with 28 during the same period last year.

The situation is so bad that Sea World suspended its sea lion show so it can focus on rescue efforts. The theme park has treated 400 pups – more than twice the number it would care for in a typical year – and constructed two temporary pools to house them.

Scientists aren’t sure what’s causing the crisis but suspect warmer waters from this winter’s mild El Nino weather pattern are affecting

the sea lion birthing grounds along the Channel Islands off the Southern California coast.

The warm water likely is pushing prime sea lion foods – market squid, sardines and anchovies – farther north, forcing the mothers to abandon their pups for up to eight days at a time in search of sustenance.

The pups, scientists believe, are weaning themselves early out of desperation and setting out on their own despite being underweight and ill-prepared to hunt.

Sea lions normally wouldn’t start showing up in large numbers until April or May, but this year, rescue centers began to get calls in December, said Matassa.

“They’re leaving with a very low tank of gas, and when they get over here, they’re showing up on the beach basically ... starving to death,” said Justin Viezbicke, a coordinator with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s California Stranding Network.

More phony math in Rauner budget proposal Buried deep within Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposed budget plan for next fiscal year is yet another claimed “savings” that may not actually save any money, and easily could wind up costing the state more.

The governor proposes to save a whopping $108 million by discontinuing child care services provided by relatives in the child’s or relative’s home.

At first glance, that cut might look prudent. Why should the state pay Grandma to baby-sit her own grandkid? Is that some sort of scam? Go to any rightwing blog, and you occasionally will see stories bashing this whole idea.

But, in reality, by pulling those payments, which are designed to help low-income parents go to school and work their way out of poverty, “Grandma” could lose her income and very well may have to find a different parttime job – meaning the parent then has to search for another provider and the state saves

Yes, there are a whole lot of “magic assumptions” in the governor’s budget proposal. The thing is chock full of wishful thinking, such as the $2.2 billion savings from a pension reform plan that must be implemented by July 1, but also can’t be halted by a lawsuit, which is so unlikely there aren’t enough decimal point zeros in the world to give you the percentages of success. It’s simply an impossible fairy tale.

Now, it’s true some relatives very well might volunteer to take care of the kids for free. That would be a great thing for the state, which wouldn’t have to pick up the tab. But we’re talking about economically distressed parents here, and they tend to come from poor families. So, while some money could be

saved, it most certainly won’t be $108 million.

The governor’s proposal, by the way, also would phase out child care subsidies for kids age 6 and older.

“Over time, the total number of children who would lose access is about 65,000,” said Miller of Voices for Children. “That’s how many kids there are age 6 to 12 who are currently enrolled. It’s over time because children over 5 who are already enrolled will continue to be as long as they remain enrolled.”

Whatever you think about that proposed cut, at least that will produce the savings intended, as well as more future savings as it’s phased in. So kudos for accuracy. Maybe not so much for humanity.

I asked the governor’s press office for comment on all of these issues but never heard back.

An inside look at Bolingbrook vs. West Aurora VIEWS Dick Goss West Aurora is not in the same conference as Lockport – it only seems that way.

The Blackhawks and Porters regularly have met twice over the past few seasons, once at the Pontiac Holiday Tournament and once in their scheduled nonconference matchup.

Of course, Bolingbrook is a Lockport rival in the SouthWest Suburban Blue. The Raiders and Porters do face one another twice in conference play on an annual basis.

Given that, Lawrence Thompson Jr. – who has completed his 16th and final season as the Lockport head coach – has a good idea what to anticipate in Tuesday’s Class 4A Hinsdale Central Supersectional between West Aurora and Bolingbrook. The game tips off at 7 p.m.

West Aurora reached the supersectional with a 60-55 victory over Hinsdale Central in the East Aurora Sectional.

The Blackhawks (22-8) entered the postseason as the No. 6 sectional seed.

Bolingbrook qualified with a 59-56 triumph over Neuqua Valley in the Bolingbrook Sectional final. The Raiders (23-6) were the No. 2 seed.

“It’s two talented teams both with their own style,” Thompson said. “They want to take advantage of the skill players they have. Both can play in the half-court and in transition.

“The half-court game will be a chess match. It’s all about execution in the half-court on both ends. West Aurora can be patient. Bolingbrook showed they can match sets with Neuqua Valley.”

The big man for West Aurora is 6-foot-6 forward Roland Griffin, who will play at Illinois State. His has been on a huge roll of late.

The Blackhawks, however, also feature guard Marquis Howard.

“Howard hit six 3s against us when we played them in January,” Thompson said. “I think we got him going. He later had a 50-point game.”

Howard actually scored 46 points when he hit an incredible 14 of 20 from 3-point range in an 82-64 victory over South Elgin, on the same February night when West Aurora coach Gordie Kerkman registered his 800th career victory.

Kerkman now has 805 wins in his 39 years at the helm.

Kerkman’s teams have won 13 sectional titles. For Bolingbrook, this is the second sectional title in its history and the first for coach Rob Brost.

“In a tight game like this one could be, experience may win out,” Thompson said.

“Gordie’s experience, and his players’ experience having been in this game last year,

could come into play.

“Bolingbrook, though, has played in good tournaments, in shootouts and has been in tough situations. So their schedule may help them. It may come down to which side stays out of foul trouble.”

Thompson said West Aurora’s guards “are quick, but they’re small. Bolingbrook may have an advantage there.

But West Aurora has Griffin.

He can be a nightmare.”

The Raiders’ No. 1 threat is guard Prentiss Nixon, who totaled 67 points in the two sectional games. “But Nixon is 6-1 and Griffin is 6-6,” Thompson noted. “That may be the difference.”

Nixon, however, has demonstrated he can be an awfully special 6-foot-1, and some of his teammates also have the potential to put Bolingbrook over the top. “[Julian] Torres could be the difference because West Aurora cannot match up with him size-wise,” Thompson said of Bolingbrook’s 6-foot-9 senior center. “If number 40 [Dimitri Akenten] crashes the boards the way he did against Neuqua, that could be big.

“I think [Devon] Sams matches up well with them because he is a physical guard.

And Brodric Thomas can give Bolingbrook a big boost if he gets his shots to fall. He’s a good player.”

Thompson knows a little something about supersectionals. His Lockport teams won three straight sectional titles from 2006 through 2008, and he is the only coach in Lockport history to have accomplished that feat.

One thing he said is certain at this juncture – motivating a team is not an issue.

“You’re one game from getting downstate,” he said.

“That gets everyone’s attention. It’s easy now to get kids motivated and ready to go.”

USF’s women bowlers qualify for nationals SUBMITTED REPORTS ADDISON – In its second year as a varsity program, the University of St. Francis women’s bowling team earned a spot in the United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Championships by virtue of a fourth-place finish at the ITC Sectional Qualifier on Saturday and Sunday at Stardust Bowl.

USF led the 18-team field, the top four of which advanced to nationals, after Saturday’s 32 Baker games with 6,226 pins before slipping to third place after 48 games halfway through Sunday’s action.

After the tournament’s 64th and final Baker game Sunday afternoon, St. Francis finished 127 pins ahead of Robert Morris-Springfield to secure fourth place and a berth in the ITC national championships April 15 to 18 at Wichita, Kansas.

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Lewis women have enjoyed the type of basketball season that many felt merited inclusion in the NCAA Division II National Tournament finals.

That goal was achieved Monday night when the Flyers beat Ashland (Ohio), 83-76, in the championship game of the Midwest Regional.

Mariyah Brawner-Henley and Jamie Johnson, the last two players of the year in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, were at their best in leading the Flyers into next week’s national championships at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Lewis, making its first-ever appearance in the Elite Eight, will open there with a quarterfinal game March 24 against Limestone from Gaffney, South Carolina, which ousted Anderson, 72-38, its regional final.

Brawner-Henley hit 13 of 20 shots, including both 3-point attempts, and 2 of 4

free throws for 30 points to go with a gamehigh 18 rebounds and three assists. Johnson went 7 of 15 from the field, 3 of 7 from beyond the arc and 14 of 14 from the free throw line in a game-high 31-point effort. She also had three rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Jess Reinhart chipped in nine points, three rebounds and three assists for Lewis (31-2). Alexus Grayer, contributing as usual off the bench, chipped in eight points, five rebounds and three assists.

Lewis totaled 19 assists, with point guard Nikki Nellen leading the way with five.

Lewis shot 44.3 percent on 27 of 81. That included 7 of 17 from 3-point range. Largely because of Johnson, the Flyers also hit their free throws at an .846 clip on 22 of 26.

Andi Dougherty had 21 points, Laina Snyder 20 and Taylor Woods 15 for Ashland (25-6), which had whipped No. 1 seed Michigan Tech, 71-50, in the regional semifinals.

Lewis, which was ranked No. 1 in the nation for much of the regular season, was the No. 2 seed.

Friddle, Keane make history at IESA meet

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com Six area wrestlers captured state titles, including two who became rare threetime champions, while five others settled for second and 12 more placed at last weekend’s Illinois Elementary School Association finals at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

This was the third straight championship for both Peotone’s Paul Keane (85 pounds) and Coal City’s Alex Friddle (90). The Peotone wrestler won at 70 pounds a year ago

and at 65 in 2013, while the Coal City athlete took first at 80 last season and at 70 the previous year.

According to the IESA records, the pair became only the fourth and fifth individuals to win three championships. Two others also were from this area, New Lenox Oster-Oakview’s Erik Murry (1985 to ’87) and Channahon’s Kirk Bedinger (1990, 1992 to ’93).

Coal City had a pair of champions, while Bolingbrook Humphrey, Channahon, Peotone and Romeoville Lukancic also finished with one title winner. Homer and

New Lenox Liberty both had two finalists, but they claimed second place.

Other state champions were Channahon’s Nathan Berta (75), Lukancic’s Azael Martinez (105), Coal City’s Ryan Wasielewski (112) and Humphrey’s Xevion Rolle (119).

Settling for second place from Homer were Ryan Oster (65) and Matt Kronsbein (100), while Liberty received runner-up finishes from John Nowak (167) and Nate Mahoney (215). Also claiming a second-place finish was Troy’s Caleb Koldan (185).

In the title matches, Keane and Rolle both won major decisions while Friddle and Wasielewski captured decisions. Martinez claimed a 1-0 win, and Berta prevailed in overtime. Koldan lost his match in overtime, while Mahoney suffered a 4-3 defeat.

Finishing in third place were Liberty’s John Buell (70), Bolingbrook Brooks’ Cameron Hargrove (85), Lukancic’s Nick Torres (95), Minooka’s Jacob Mensik (112) and Troy’s David Delgado (126).

Homer’s Mikey Kaminski (80) and Liberty’s Kaleb Kittl (85) both claimed fourth place.

Capturing fifth-place finishes were Minooka’s Michael Carey (75), Peotone’s Jake Liberatore (90) and Homer’s Tyler Thompson (135).

Coal City’s Zach Finch (70) and Minooka’s Nicholas Daniel (105) both took sixth place.

In the team competition, Liberty scored 98 points to take third place while Homer collected 89 points and settled for a sixth-place showing.

Other finishers among the top 20 teams were Minooka (11th, 67), Coal City (12th, 65), Troy (13th, 59), Lukancic (19th, 44.5) and Peotone (Tied for 20th, 44)

But the sophomores got a measure of satisfaction this past weekend when they each won titles at the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association’s finals in Springfield.

Both DiBenedetto (126 pounds) and Poch (113) captured decisions in their title matches to lead the way among 12 area wrestlers who placed in the event. The pair were the lone finalists.

The tournament is open to all freshmen and sophomores who failed to qualify for the IHSA finals. Both were alternates this season after falling a win shy at the Normal Community Sectional. However, DiBenedetto was a state qualifier during his freshman season.

Claiming fourth-place finishes were Plainfield East’s Anthony Zamora (106), Plainfield Central’s Noah Bogdan (132) and Lincoln-Way East’s Sam Diehl (285).

Fifth-place showings were turned in by Lincoln-Way Central’s Liam Meagher (113), Providence’s Dominick Ambrose (120) and Cole Smith (145) and Lincoln-Way East’s Devin O’Rourke (195).

And finishing in sixth place were Bolingbrook’s Robert Goodwin (152), Lockport’s Payton Fernandes (160) and Joliet West’s Pat Leaf (285).

Seven individuals from local wrestling clubs captured championships at last weekend’s Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation state finals in Rockford.

Leading the way with four champions were the Bolingbrook Junior Raiders, while Celtic Elite, the Lemont Bears and Force Wrestling Club each had one title winner.

Bolingbrook, which won the IKWF dual team championship in January, received all of its titles in the senior division. Winning titles for the Junior Raiders were James Pierandozzi (89 pounds), Jacob Dado (108), Baylor Fernandes (138) and Ronald Tucker (275).

Also winning a senior title was Force’s Trevor Swier (156). Capturing championships in the novice division were Celtic Elite’s Kevin Countryman (101) and Lemont’s Drew Nash (115).

Tucker and Swier also captured novice division championships in last year’s IKWF finals.

Claiming second-place finishes in the senior division were Celtic Elite’s Jacob Randolph (74), Bolingbrook’s Dylan Burnoski (95) and Force’s Nicholas Vaccariello (275). In addition, Celtic

Elite’s Kyle Schickel (74) was a runner-up in the novice division.

Also for Bolingbrook in the senior division, Matthew Ramos (84) was third, Javen Estrada (74) and Kaleb Thompson (84) were fourth, Anthony Schickel (79) placed fifth, and Corey Sapp (122) took sixth. Alex Villar (84) claimed fourth place in the novice division.

For Celtic Elite in the novice competition, Nicholas Matthias (79) and Daemon McMurtry (130) took third, Qayin Dabney (95) and Daniel Jezik (108) were fourth, and Grant Laduke (89) finished fifth. Also, Nick Mahajlovich (166) placed fourth in the senior division.

In the novice division, Force got thirds from Dylan Amico (66) and Jeremy Pullen (115), received fourths from Jordan Blew (74) and Zachary Kolb (115), got a fifth from Alex Carillo (108) and received a sixth from Logan Kuhel-Trimmer (66). In addition, D’Anthony Hopkins (115) placed sixth in the senior competition.

The Will County Warriors received a fourth-place finish in the novice division from Terrance Snapp (79) and a fifth place in senior from Anthony Molton (84).

Also, Lemont got a fifth-place effort in the novice division from Apollo Gothard (138).

LOCKPORT – A young, relatively inexperienced roster could make lots of softball coaches a tad nervous.

Lockport coach Marissa Chovanec is not one of them.

She’s downright excited.

“It’s a different mix. I think that the girls know what Lockport softball has been about,” Chovanec said.

“Only three seniors, it’s good and bad, but it allows for some new, young blood to come in. They want to leave their mark, leave the legacy as good as when they got here if not even better.”

That’s the Porters this year. Young, talented, somewhat inexperienced and psyched to see what’s ahead.

Lockport finished 27-8-1 last season, falling to host and SouthWest Suburban Blue rival Lincoln-Way East in the sectional semifinals.

The Porters are scheduled to open the season April 1 at Thornton.

Gone are nine seniors from the squad. So in steps the youth, definitely a change of pace for a program that’s seemingly always senior-dominated.

“We lost those nine seniors, but we do have returning players so we know what to expect,” junior first baseman Zara Voulgaris said.

“It will be a lot of getting to know each other and working at it with almost a whole new team, but our practices have looked good.”

An Illinois State commit, Voulgaris is expected to anchor the middle of the Porters’ lineup.

As for the rest of the batting order, that remains a work in progress, but Chovanec sees potential throughout the roster. Sophomore Elena Woulfe was a postseason callup last season for the Porters and made an immediate impact.

Expect Woulfe to be an igniter at the top of the lineup to get the offense moving, with multiple players capable of wreaking havoc on the basepaths.

Many games and practices await, but young or old, power hitters or contact hitters, the goals are set high for the Porters.

“State is always in our eyes,” Cielenski said. “That’s what everyone wants, and that’s what we’re working for.”

The ASSOCIATED PRESS PEORIA, Ariz. – Matt Kemp and Tommy Medica hit towering home runs off Jon Lester on a rough day Monday for the new Cubs ace in the San Diego Padres’ 7-0 victory.

Lester hadn’t allowed a run or walk in two starts and five innings. He was charged with six runs and seven hits before leaving with one out in the fourth. He was scheduled to go four innings.

Lester first started feeling uncomfortable in the bullpen when he said “everything was flat, ball was up.”

The left-hander issued a leadoff walk in a two-run second that included former Boston teammate Will Middlebrooks’ wall double.

Kemp crushed an inside fastball to left an inning later that landed on a tent, his second homer of the spring with

his new club.

Lester returned for the fourth despite being at 62 pitches, then gave up three more hits, including Medica’s two-run shot to center.

“I’d make a bad pitch and it would take two more for me to make the adjustment,” Lester said. “That’s got to change quickly.”

The Huskies are seeded first overall in the tournament and tops in the Albany Region, in search of a 10th overall title which would tie Geno Auriemma with UCLA men’s coach John Wooden for most all-time.

UConn, including Bolingbrook grad Morgan Tuck, will open up Saturday against St. Francis, Brooklyn, which is making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Terriers (15-17) are the 10th team to enter the NCAAs with a losing record.

Joining the Huskies as top seeds are South Carolina and Notre Dame.

The 64-team tournament begins Friday and the national championship game will be on April 7 in Tampa. This season the women’s tournament moved its games up one day in the first two rounds and the regionals. The Final Four is still being played on Friday and Sunday.

The NCAA also decided to go back to rewarding the top 16 seeds with home games in the opening two rounds for the first time since 2003. By awarding the sites on merit the Gamecocks were allowed to host the first two rounds despite the state flying the Confederate flag on Statehouse grounds. The NCAA banned South Carolina and other schools in the state from hosting championships held at predetermined sites because of the state’s decision to fly the Confederate flag. Mississippi schools face the same NCAA rules.

Can Coke be a good snack?

Health experts who work with the soda manufacturer say so

By CANDICE CHOI NEW YORK – Coca-Cola is working with fitness and nutrition experts who suggest its soda as a treat at a time when the world’s biggest beverage maker is being blamed for helping fuel obesity rates.

In February, several of the experts wrote online posts for American Heart Month, with each including a mini-can of Coke or soda as a snack idea.

The pieces – which appeared on nutrition blogs and other sites including those of major newspapers – offer a window into the many ways food companies work behind the scenes to cast their products in a positive light, often with the help of third parties who are seen as trusted authorities.

Ben Sheidler, a Coca-Cola spokesman, compared the February posts to product placement deals a company might have with TV shows.

“We have a network of dietitians we work with,” said Sheidler, who declined to say how much the company pays experts. “Every big brand works with bloggers or has paid talent.”

Other companies including Kellogg and General Mills have used strategies such as providing continuing education classes for dietitians, funding studies that burnish the nutritional images of their products and offering newsletters for health experts.

PepsiCo Inc. also has worked with dietitians who suggest its Frito-Lay and Tostito chips in local TV segments on healthy eating. Others use nutrition experts in sponsored content; the American Pistachio Growers has quoted a dietitian for the New England Patriots in a piece on healthy snacks and recipes; and Nestle has quoted its own executive in a post about infant nutrition.

One post refers to a “refreshing beverage option such as a mini-can of Coca-Cola.” Another suggests “portion-controlled versions of your favorites, like Coca-Cola mini-cans, packs of almonds or pre-portioned desserts for a meal.”

The focus on the smaller cans isn’t surprising. Sugary drinks have come under fire for fueling obesity rates and related ills, and the last time Coke’s annual U.S. soda volume increased was in 2002, according to the industry tracker Beverage Digest.

More recently, the company is pushing its mini-cans as a guilt-free way to enjoy cola.

The cans also fetch higher prices on a per-ounce basis; so even if people are drinking less soda, Coke says it can grow sales.

In a statement, Coca-Cola said it wants to “help people make decisions that are right for them” and that like others

in the industry, it works with health experts “to help bring context to the latest facts and science around our products and ingredients.” It said any communications by the experts it works with contain the appropriate disclosures.

Most of the pieces suggesting mini-Cokes say in the bios that the author is a “consultant” for food companies, including Coca-Cola. Some add that the ideas expressed are their own. One column is marked at the bottom as a “sponsored article,” which is an ad designed to look like a regular story. It ran on more than 1,000 sites, including those of major news outlets around the country. The other posts were not marked as sponsored content but follow a similar format.

Kelly McBride, who teaches media ethics at The Poynter Institute, said the phrasing of the disclosure that the author is a “consultant” for food companies, including Coca-Cola, doesn’t make it clear the author was specifically paid by Coke for the column.

The HERALD-NEWS JOLIET – The March of Dimes has recognized Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center’s Labor and Delivery Unit for successfully reducing its Early Elective Delivery rate to zero.

EED is recognized as any delivery less than 39 weeks that is not medically indicated. In 2010 the unit was at a 20 percent EED rate. Nurses and physicians collaborated to reduce the labor/delivery unit’s EED rate below the state benchmark of 5 percent.

Historically, patients sometimes have requested an early delivery because of child care convenience and/or family requests. However, research has shown that without a medical indication, these babies are more at risk for complications and increased length of hospital stay.

Reduction of EED is a statewide initiative through the Illinois Perinatal Quality Collaborative and a Joint Commission Core Measure. The department has been working on this quality project for some time.

The HERALD-NEWS FRANKFORT – Each year, staff members from Grand Prairie Elementary School in Frankfort walk as a team in the Walk of Hope.

This annual event is sponsored by The Cancer Support Center in Mokena, which provides free resources to help people improve their quality of life during the cancer experience.

This year, the school hosted a T-shirt drawing contest to help raise funds. Second-grader Abby Bunch, in teacher Ann Curran’s class, won the most votes for her drawing, which will be featured on the T-shirts.

The other top finalists were Olivia Sexton, Taylor Ossowski, Lauren Hughes and Charlie Cosich. Grand Prairie teachers throughout the school will be wearing the shirts, and the sale will be opened up to students and families for anyone who is interested.

To begin the week, we are looking at replying to partner’s takeout double. As I mentioned yesterday, many inexperienced players bid the suit that they prefer at a minimum level, regardless of hand strength.

But that is wrong. Don’t hope for a second chance to cross the chasm between partscore and game.

By an unpassed hand, a simple bid shows 0-8 points. With 9-11 points (or a very suitable eight), it is right to jump in a suit -- as South does in today’s deal. (With 12-plus points, South would start with a cue-bid of opener’s suit; here, two hearts. Also, a passed hand lowers these ranges by two points.)

Over South’s two-spade advance, North has an easy raise to four spades. However, even a well-bid contract may require careful handling. What should South do after West leads the club jack?

Declarer is missing three aces and is faced with a third-round club loser. If South leads a trump at trick two, he should lose that club trick and go down one. Declarer must eradicate that club loser immediately by playing a diamond honor from the dummy at trick two.

Suppose West takes that trick and perseveres in clubs. Declarer wins in the dummy and cashes the two diamond winners, discarding his last club. Then South draws trumps as quickly as possible.

Other symptoms of a stress fracture include bruising and possible redness and swelling.

Whatever you do, don’t continue exercising if you have localized pain over a bone. You might break it completely.

If you suspect that you have a stress fracture, see your doctor. He or she may start by ordering an X-ray. However, it can take two weeks for evidence of a stress fracture to appear on an X-ray, and some stress fractures never show up on one. Your doctor may have to diagnose the condition by feeling the area, or ordering other imaging tests such as a bone scan or an MRI. If you do have a stress fracture, your doctor will probably recommend rest. He or she will likely also prescribe some type of immobilizing device, such as a special hardsoled shoe or a fracture boot. Typically, stress fractures heal within four to six weeks.

The best way to prevent a stress fracture is to avoid sudden increases in activity or exercise.

Instead, build up your exercise regimen gradually.

Wear well-cushioned shoes to reduce the impact on your feet. Warm up before you exercise.

Limber muscles allow better joint motion and flexibility, which in turn help cushion the impact on your bones.

Dear Doctor K: What is a stress fracture?

Dear Reader: A patient of mine once asked me the same question, but with a twist: “In the emergency room they said I had a stress fracture. That’s ridiculous, right? I mean, they’re blaming stress for causing nearly every symptom these days. But how can stress cause a bone to break?”

It’s not emotional or mental “stress” that the word refers to in a stress fracture. It is stress – unusual physical pressure – placed on a bone that causes it to break. And the break typically does not separate the two ends of the bone. The X-ray, CT scan or MRI scan often shows no abnormality in the shape of the bone. Instead, there is a hairline crack inside the bone.

In young people, stress fractures can result from overexertion or prolonged high-impact exercise, such as running or tennis. But they also occur in middle-aged or elderly people, especially women, with thinning bones. These people may develop stress fractures even as a result of normal daily activities, such as walking.

In the feet, stress fractures most often occur in the metatarsal bones, the long bones leading to the toes. But they can also occur in other parts of the body.

All fractures, including stress fractures, require immediate attention. An untreated fracture might not heal properly and could result in deformity, persistent pain or both.

One warning sign of a stress fracture is difficulty walking. Don’t be fooled, however. It’s sometimes possible to walk on a broken foot.

Check to see whether you have any pain or tenderness directly over the bone when you touch

Dear Scared Stupid: Yes. Take a pregnancy test to determine if you really are pregnant. If it turns out that you are, then you must tell your fiance everything.

Even if Ryan walks away, the baby’s father will be legally responsible for child support.

It is important that you also tell your mother what’s going on. She may not be thrilled to hear the news, but I doubt she will put you and her grandchild-to-be out on the street. A generation or two ago that might have happened, but no longer.

Dear Abby: I know if a girl breaks off the engagement, she’s supposed to return the ring to her ex-fiance. Does the situation of a wife filing for divorce fall under the same set of rules? I need a response soon. – Craig in
