Chasteen comes out on top in circuit clerk race

JOLIET – Andrea Chasteen – the handpicked Democratic candidate for Will County circuit clerk – secured her party’s nomination Tuesday night, setting herself up for a fight in November against Republican nominee Marlene Carlson.

For most of the night, Chasteen maintained a 2-to-1 lead over her Democratic opponent Bob Enright, a former Will County circuit clerk employee and current judicial project manager for Kane County.

With 255 of 300 precincts in Will County reporting, Chasteen, a longtime circuit clerk employee, had 38,440 votes. Enright had 17,723 votes. Carlson ran unopposed in the Republican primary.

Longtime Circuit Clerk Pam McGuire endorsed Chasteen last year when she announced she was stepping down after the end of her fifth term.

Two hundred fifty one write-in votes were cast, but it’s unclear if all were for one known write-in candidate, Barbara Guerrero, a deputy clerk who was kicked off the

ballot for invalid petition signatures.

In the circuit clerk’s race, the seven precincts in Aurora had not reported any election results as of 10 p.m. Tuesday.

County Board races

Because there are two seats per Will County Board district, the top two vote-getters of the night secured a spot on the November ballot Will County Board District 1 and 13 races.

District 1

With just eight of 26 precincts reporting Tuesday night, it was too soon to tell how the Will County Board District 1 race would go Tuesday night.

As of 10 p.m., Laurie Summers, of Crete, appeared to be ahead in the five-way race with 756 votes.

Bob Howard – the only Democratic incumbent in the District 1 race – garnered 593 votes.

Also appearing on the ballot in November will be Republican incumbent Judy Ogalla, R-Monee, and Republican candidate Natalie Murawski, of Peotone.

There were three other Democratic opponents: Sherry Newquist, of Steger, came in with 529; Joseph Roudez III, of University Park, came in with 327; and Chere’se Williams, of University Park, came in with 310.

District 13

Will County Board member Liz Collins’ announced her departure last year, setting the stage for newcomers to vie for the open District 13 seat in Tuesday’s primary.

With 22 of 22 precincts reporting, Plainfield Township Republicans Chairman Tim Kraulidis, 49, secured the most votes of the night, coming in with 3,237 votes.

Brenda Morse, a 53-year-old who owns a horse boarding facility in Minooka, came in second with 2,784 votes. As the top two vote-getters, both will appear on the ballot in November as Republican candidates.

Yvonne Bolton, 57, of Plainfield, came in last place with 2,042 votes.

Also appearing on the ballot in November will be incumbent Mark Ferry, D-Plainfield, and Democratic candidate Bill Thoman.

Grundy County election roundup from Tuesday’s primary

Corri Trotter of Morris appeared to have won the Republican battle for circuit clerk against her opponent, Karen Broncoto, of Coal City. With 39 of 40 precincts reporting late Tuesday, the vote was 3,192 to 2,903.

Trotter will face Democratic challenger Joan Harrop of Morris, who was the only Democrat to file a petition for the position in the November general election. The winner of the November election will fill the seat of four-term Grundy County Circuit Clerk Karen Slattery, who announced in August 2015 she would not run for re-election after 16 years in the position.

Shupe filed as a Democrat in hopes of taking over the position of incumbent Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland, who was the only Republican candidate to file.

In Grundy County District 1, Morris resident Don Hansen and incumbents Vicki Geiger and John B. Roth III were the lead vote-getters for the Republican primary.

The vote, with 13 of 13 precincts reporting, were Roth with 1,622, Geiger with 1,456, and Hansen at 1,413. Corsello received 1,083 votes.

There were no Democrats candidates for District 1; however, the party may slate up to three candidates to run in the November election.

In District 3, incumbents Frank Halpin Jr. of Gardner and Ann Gill of Coal City and Jim Ryan of Morris were the top three Democratic vote-getters and will face incumbent Harold Vota of Coal City and

Brian Severson of Dwight and Mashale Castelli of South Wilmington, who filed as Republican candidates. The vote, with 15 of 16 precincts reporting late Tuesday, were Gill at 1,099, Ryan at 936 and Halpin at 886.

Riley received 721 votes.

• The Village of Dwight Referendum, asking for a 1 percentage point sales tax increase for road improvements, which would generate $500,000 a year, passed with 4 of 4 precincts reporting in Livingston County with 888 “yes” votes and 302 “no” votes. The lone precinct in Grundy County was not tabulated as of late Tuesday.

• Voters in the Mazon Verona Kinsman area in Grundy County were asked to approve the creation of the Mazon Verona Kinsman Rescue Squad District, which would provide ambulance response for the Mazon fire district and the Verona Kinsman fire district. With 4 of 5 precincts reporting, there were 469 “yes” votes and 144 “no” votes.

LIBRARY REFERENDUM FAILS

vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Brooding faces were spotted Tuesday night at the election viewing party for Citizens for a 21st Century Library as election results showed that the Plainfield Public Library’s two referendum questions to build and operate a new $39 million library appear to have failed.

The group gathered at Katie O’Connor’s Pint House in Plainfield to view the referendum’s two questions, which unofficial results show failed by votes of 9,089 to 7,232 and 11,241 to 4,907 with 45 of 45 precincts reporting Tuesday night.

The referendum, if passed, would have raised taxes at the rate of about $15 a month for a $300,000 home. The new library would have provided new services and much-needed space to an otherwise cramped building.

“It’s disappointing,” said Bill Hanley, a member of the pro-referendum group.

At Plainfield Central High School, resident Khatija Ali said she voted in favor of the library referendum.

“We have a 3-year-old daughter and we’re planning on raising her in Plainfield,” Ali said, noting that an expanded library would provide more resources for her child. “I also think it’s for a good cause.”

Some who voted against the referendum cited tax concerns as their primary deterrent.

Resident Bala Vidyasagar said his main motivation to vote Tuesday at his polling place, St. Mary Immaculate Parish, was taxes.

“Absolutely not,” Vidyasagar said when asked whether he supported the referendum. “[It seems like] we have the highest property taxes in the world.”

While Vidyasagar wouldn’t be opposed to expanded services with the library, he said he would like to see his overall tax bill drop, not rise.

“They need to cut taxes somewhere else,” he said.

Citizens for a 21st Century Library member Heather Kazmark said the political action committee targeted precincts where polling data showed voters were undecided.

“We kind of worked our way around the core downtown area,” Kazmark said, noting that the group went to areas in the district where voters weren’t as informed such as the unincorporated Wheatland Township and Plainfield Township areas.

Illinois voters talk of gut emotions

CHICAGO – In an unusually passionate campaign season, gut emotion propelled many Illinois voters to the polls Tuesday. While some defined issues in this race that were dear to them, they were quick to talk in more emotional strokes of trust, revulsion, anger and maturity.

Retired Chicago machine repairman Juan Araujo said he voted for Democratic U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders because he “talks from the heart” and has Polish immigrant roots. He said he would never vote for Republican Donald Trump because – in his words – he’s a “clown” who’s not serious enough for the White House.

In the state capital, Trump supporter Gayle Swoik said she was drawn to the billionaire businessman – who ultimately won the state’s GOP primary – because of his tough language on immigration and a sense that he’d be good to veterans like those in her family. But she acknowledged feeling fuzzy on the details.

“His policies are in transition,” Swoik said.

On Chicago’s heavily Democratic South Side, voters talked mostly of Democrats Hillary Clinton and Sanders, who remained in a tight race Tuesday night.

But they also had their eyes on Trump, as they considered which candidate had the best shot at defeating the Republican front-runner in November should he win the GOP nomination.

Sharon Schaffer said she’s praying that former Secretary of State Clinton can beat Trump if they end up facing each other. Trump’s heated language on immigration and minorities has angered voters like her.

“I can’t stand him,” she said of Trump, joking that if he wins she’ll leave the country. “I will go back to Africa – and I’ve never been,” said the 65-year-old retiree.

Sheri Scott, a customer service worker and mother of three, voted for Sanders, saying she thinks the Vermont senator has a better shot against Trump because she believes he’s more trustworthy than Clinton.

“I believe he’s a genuine person with a good heart. I trust him,” she said.

Chicago Board of Elections spokesman Jim Allen said the number of people asking for Republican ballots also increased from eight years ago, from around 6 percent of voters to just less than 10 percent this election. That’s a possible sign of Democratic voters wanting to weigh in on the GOP presidential primary.

Penny Shank was among voters choosing that strategy. She celebrated her 69th birthday Tuesday by picking up a Republican ballot for the first

time at Veterans of Foreign Wars hall in Springfield, Illinois, to vote against Trump and other Republican candidates whom she called Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner’s “cronies.”

“I think there are a lot of Democrats who are crossing over just to do that,” said Shank, who voted for Ohio Gov. John Kasich. “I think Trump is an absolute joke.”

Kirk, Duckworth win primaries for U.S. Senate matchup

CHICAGO – U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth won the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate on Tuesday, making official a matchup with Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk that’s been informally underway for months.

The already-contentious race is expected to be one of the costliest and hardest fought of the November election. Democrats see Kirk’s seat in this typically blue state as one of the party’s best chances to unseat an incumbent as they try to regain control of the U.S. Senate.

Duckworth, an Iraq War veteran from Hoffman Estates, used big advantages in fundraising and name recognition to defeat former Chicago Urban League CEO Andrea Zopp and Napoleon Harris, a state senator and former NFL player from Harvey who owns several suburban Chicago pizza

restaurants.

Zopp, of Chicago, went after Duckworth particularly hard in recent weeks, saying she had little to show for two terms in Congress and criticizing her for Mark not participating in Kirk more than one televised debate. Both she and Harris, who are African -American, also argued they would do more to reduce gun violence, i m p r o v e t h e c r i m inal justice system and Andrea bring jobs to struggling Zopp neighborhoods.

Duckworth kept her focus squarely on Kirk, who is seeking his second Senate term after five terms representing Chicago’s northern suburbs in the U.S. House.

Kirk, of Highland Park, defeated

Oswego businessman James Marter on Tuesday after a primary in which the little-known candidate presented himself as the more conservative option.

Duckworth has said she supports allowing 200,000 refugees – including 100,000 from Syria – into the U.S., a number much higher than President Barack Obama has supported. Kirk’s campaign has called that position “naive.” He wants to prohibit any refugees from entering the country until federal authorities can guarantee they do not pose a threat.

Kirk also was a vocal critic of Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran, which Duckworth supported.

Both Kirk and Duckworth have made compelling personal stories part of their campaign. Kirk suffered a near-fatal stroke in 2012, but returned to work in Washington a year later following intense rehabilitation.

Duckworth, who grew up poor and attended college with help from federal grants, lost both legs after the helicopter she was co-piloting was shot down in Iraq.

Walz poised to win Dem nomination in 14th

bschory@shawmedia.com Jim Walz of Gurnee was ahead in Tuesday’s three-way Democratic primary in the 14th Congressional District, with 13,145 votes in unofficial and incomplete results.

The winner of that race will run against incumbent U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, in the Nov. 8 general election. Hultgren ran unopposed in the primary.

Walz ran against John Hosta of Spring Grove, who got 11,206 votes, and Jesse Lee Maggitt of Plainfield, who got 5,868 votes, also in unofficial and incomplete results.

“There is a long way to go,” Walz said late Tuesday. “I certainly want to be victorious, but I am no way in a position to say anything. ... But I am heartened by the voter turnout for the party, and I think that that’s a very good thing.”

Maggitt was undaunted by being

in third place, saying his purpose in running was a means to help unite the Democratic Party “so we can be put on the path of doing some great things.”

“I am the new guy on the ticket, but I am not short on experience,” Maggitt said. “I will go back and meet with Democratic Party chairmen of each county and get an idea of their strategies for uniting the party at their level.

It’s imperative that we are focused on creating balance in Congress.”

Hosta did not immediately return a voicemail message seeking comment.

All three had said earlier that any of them could do a better job in Congress than the incumbent.

Walz, a Warren Township school board member, had said he was running because “the middle class is woefully unrepresented in Washington to the point that we are not represented at all. And it seems like the moneyed interests get any and all of the attention, and that does not seem to be quite right to me.”

Stella leads Republican primary for 11th Congressional District seat

fsarver@shawmedia.com As of late Tuesday, Nick Stella led the Republican primary for the 11th Congressional District.

With 247 out of 446 precincts reporting across Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall and Will counties, Stella had 13,861 votes. Tonia Khouri followed with 13,136 votes and Herman White had 9,664 votes.

The winner of the Republican primary will face incumbent U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, in the general election. Foster ran unopposed in the Democratic primary.

Three candidates sought the nomination for the 11th District, which winds from Joliet to Aurora, taking in most of Bolingbrook and parts of Plainfield, Shorewood and other towns.

Nick Stella, of Darien, is a cardiologist who said the most important issue facing the country is the economy. He also said he supports repealing the Affordable Care Act. Stella favors simplifying the tax code

by replacing the income tax with a flat tax, fair tax on consumption, or a combination of both.

Tonia Khouri, of Aurora, is a DuPage County Board member who has strong Republican Party backing. She said she is a small-business owner.

According to her campaign website she has three major focuses: the quality of education, the safety of our communities, and the opportunity for work and job growth within the 11th District.

Herman White is a physicist who has worked at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia for 42 years.

White is a former member of Police and Fire Commission in the village of Naperville, where he lives, and of the board of directors of Edward Hospital.

He is on the board of trustees at North Central College in Naperville, and he is the vice chairman of the board for the Teachers Academy for Math and Science in Chicago.

In Will County, he believes the top concern is jobs. White said Washington needs to free up the economy to promote innovation and job creation.

Will Co. referendums get mixed results

fsarver@shawmedia.com Referendums calling for term limits and tax limits proved popular, while those seeking tax hikes got mixed results Tuesday in Will County.

The referendums covered tax increases, bond issuance, limiting mayoral terms and asking voters to require government bodies to receive their approval before increasing tax levies.

• The Frankfort Square Park District’s referendum was leading by a

vote of 423 to 348 with 4 of 12 precincts reporting. The referendum proposed issuing $3.5 million in bonds, increasing property taxes by $40 per year on a $250,000 home.

• The White Oak Library District’s referendum failed, 9,032 to 4,717. The referendum asked residents to increase the limiting tax rate from 0.1995 cents per $100 of assessed valuation to 0.23 cents.

• A Homer Township advisory referendum proposed by Will County Board member Steve Balich, R-Homer Glen,

was approved, 8,131 to 1,234. Balich’s referendum asked voters to require government bodies to seek voter approval for any tax levy increases.

• A Homer Glen village term limits referendum was approved, 5,560 to 700.

Voters were asked whether to impose a limit of two four-year terms for the mayor position.

• The Taft School District 90 referendum to increase taxes to help offset a decline in equalized assessed value was defeated by a vote of 463 to 394.

• The Northwest Homer Fire Protection District’s referendum asking for a tax increase to fund needed repairs to its aging stations was approved, 1,932 to 1,870.

Judge: No new sentence in ’09 Frankfort Township murder JOLIET – A Frankfort Township man’s 70-year prison sentence for a 2009 murder will stand, a judge ruled Tuesday.

Though Brian Trainauskas, 41, may not be prosecuted at all for allegedly offering money to have his prosecutor and another person Brian killed.

On Jan. 23, 2009, Mon- Trainauskas ica Timar’s body was found in the trunk of her Ford Mustang in the 21000 block of South 78th Avenue in Frankfort Township. Her blood was later found in her friend Trainauskas’ house and inside the barrel of a shotgun he’d sold to a friend the day before her body was discovered.

Trainauskas implicated himself in Timar’s death during an interview with police, but those statements were later ruled to be inadmissible. While

being held in the Will County Jail, he offered another inmate $100,000 to kill former Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Nicole Moore and then a random man who could be framed for killing both Moore and Timar, according to previous testimony.

Defense attorney George Andrews asked Judge Dave Carlson on Tuesday to reconsider Trainauskas’ sentence, noting the 45-year minimum “is, in essence, a life sentence.”

Carlson said that when making his decision to sentence Trainauskas to 65 years in prison for murder and a consecutive five years for concealing a homicide, he had taken a lot of evidence into consideration, not just the solicitation-of-murder charge. “[Though] I find it amazing there is nobody in the Attorney General’s Office to appear on a matter that was set [on the same day as the murder sentence hearing at their request],” Carlson said. “Hypothetically, if Mr. Trainauskas were to demand a speedy trial on that matter right now ... it’d

LOCAL BRIEFS Police: Frankfort Township couple die in murder-suicide

FRANKFORT TOWNSHIP – An elderly couple suffering from health problems died overnight Monday in a murder-suicide, police said.

William G. Swearingen, 76, called 911 at 11:30 p.m. Monday and said he’d just killed his wife and hung up, Will County sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said. Deputies were sent to his residence in the 19000 block of Beechnut Drive and found the front door slightly open, she said.

“Deputies entered the home and found William Swearingen and his wife, Nancy [Swearingen], 72, unresponsive in the living room,” Hoffmeyer said.

They were pronounced dead at the scene by the Will County Coroner’s Office at 2:10 a.m. Tuesday.

Hoffmeyer said detectives found a handgun that appears to have been used in the incident.

“The couple had been suffering from

serious health issues,” she said. “There had not been prior calls [to police] and neighbors told deputies they got along.”

Plainfield man slain in Chicago

CHICAGO – A Plainfield man was killed in a drive-by shooting Friday in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood.

Terall Adams, 20, was alone in a car about 5:45 p.m. when he was shot by the occupant of another vehicle in the 800 block of North Latrobe Avenue, Chicago police officer Thomas Sweeney said Tuesday.

Adams was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified Adams as a Plainfield resident.

Chicago police reports said Adams was a “documented gang member,” Sweeney said.

No suspect information was available Tuesday.

Finances at the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet are being questioned after officials learned there are late state and federal payroll payments and overdue bills. problems were reviewed.

Councilman Jim McFarland pointed to details in the memo, including one sentence that said, “Green promised to lay off two employees in January to cut expenses, but never did so.” McFarland noted that the Rialto at about that same time hired a development director.

“They’re supposed to lay two people off, and then they hire someone at a nice salary,” McFarland said. “Two and two is not equalling four.”

Vera declined to discuss the layoffs, saying it was a personnel matter.

He also would not discuss the future of Rialto Finance Manager Dale Evans, who “was complicit and participated in this payroll tax situation,” according to Hock’s memo.

Vera did say it was Evans who told him that payroll taxes were not being paid. He said he first learned of the situation when Evans mentioned it to him during a meeting in mid-December.

Vera said an accountant who was present at that meeting emphasized the importance of paying payroll taxes. On

more than one occasion after that, Vera said he had asked Green about the payroll taxes.

“He was, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think we’re fine. I’m going to get together with Dale [Evans],’ ” Vera said, describing one conversation in mid-February.

At that point, Vera said, he went to

Evans and told him that Green indicated the payroll taxes were being paid. “[Evans] looked at me. He said, ‘No. That’s not true. They haven’t been paid,’” Vera said.

According to Hock’s memo, the Rialto board in closed session at a March 2 meeting was apprised of the situation.

Green was not at that meeting. Hock said the board in that session decided not to renew Green’s contract, which expires in December, and announced the decision this week.

The Rialto board on Monday tabled a vote on a separation agreement with Green when its attorney, David Silverman, asked for another week to try to work out a mutual agreement. The board is scheduled to meet again 4 p.m.

JOLIET – Rialto Square Theatre officials are trying to get a clear picture of the theater’s financial situation amid late payroll payments and overdue bills.

On Monday, city and Rialto officials said unpaid payroll taxes are in the neighborhood of $120,000 with another $395,000 due in vendor payments.

What’s not clear is when all that money is due.

“We’re trying to find out what’s late, what’s owed and what’s current,” Rialto board Chairman Dan Vera said Tuesday. “Our goal is to move forward, figure this out, and resolve the situation.”

Joliet has given the Rialto a $10,000 advance on the quarterly funding contribution to the Rialto to cover late payments on state payroll taxes.

That payment was due this month, Vera said.

Since payroll taxes are due quarterly, Vera said, not all of the unpaid federal payroll taxes are late. Vera has asked the city to advance money for those payments.

But the City Council on Monday balked at the idea of sending the Rialto any more money until the current financial situation is clarified. Council members also said they were reluctant to provide the Rialto more money while Randy Green remains general manager.

A March 11 memo to the council from City Manager Jim Hock describes a situation in which Green “deflected” questions from Vera about whether payroll taxes were being paid.

The Rialto Square Theatre since November has made only one payment on payroll taxes, according to Hock’s memo.

Hock provided a copy of the memo to The Herald-News on Monday after it became a topic of public discussion at a City Council meeting where the Rialto

Joliet inspector general’s report ready, not released

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet City Council on Tuesday voted to release the first inspector general report, which is on Evergreen Terrace, but then the city did not release it.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said the report will be released sometime this week.

Sources said the report questions as much as $600,000 in legal bills from the private law firm that represented the city in federal court in the Evergreen Terrace case.

Council members and even City Manager Jim Hock appeared confused as to why the report, which was in council members’ hands, was not made public at the meeting.

“I don’t know,” Hock said after the meeting when asked why the report was not being released.

“I’ve got no idea,” Councilman

Michael Turk said. “Tonight I thought we voted to release the report and the minutes.”

The matter was not on the agenda.

But during his city manager’s report, Hock asked for a vote that would make release of the report possible. He asked the council to approve the release of minutes from closed sessions going back several years.

Hock noted that the report was provided to the council on Monday.

Inspector General Chris Regis, hired by the city in January, presented the report to the council in a closed session on Monday.

The council voted unanimously to release minutes and the report, although not everyone read it.

Turk said he left his copy in the room where the closed session was held Monday to avoid any suspicion in case it was leaked before being

made public.

“I scanned the report,” Turk said.

“I didn’t read it in-depth. At some point in time, it looks like there was a change in hourly rates.”

The Evergreen Terrace case is in its 11th year, and the city still is awaiting a decision on an appeal of a federal judge’s ruling that allowed the city to take over the housing complex.

Councilman Pat Mudron said the report is roughly 25 pages, and he has not had time to read it.

But Mudron said the report looks at the hourly rates the city agreed to pay and questions the total bills based on the original rates.

The only comment on the report during the meeting was when Councilman Larry Hug asked the mayor when the public would have access to the document. Hug said later that he did not know why the report was not released at the meeting.

The Slammers will participate in the Joliet Easter Parade at 1 p.m.

First Community Financial Bank to merge with Mazon State Bank

JOLIET – First Community Financial Bank, based in Joliet, announced Tuesday a merger with Mazon State Bank that will expand its services into Grundy County.

First Community CEO Roy C. Thygesen said in a news release the combination will further enhance the largest community bank headquartered in Will County and help better serve existing clients based in Grundy County.

Mazon State Bank – which owns and operates banks in Mazon, Braidwood and Diamond with $85 million in total assets – will increase customer service flexibility in several ways after the merger becomes official in the third quarter of 2016.

In addition to a drop in its own operating costs, Mazon State Bank’s dollar limit for a financial deal will go from $1.9 million to $15 million because of First Community’s vast asset base.

“There’s been several banking deals come along that we’ve had to turn down because the dollar amount was too high,” said Michael C. Breisch, chairman, president and CEO of Ma-

zon State Bank. “First Community’s technology is also right across from breaking edge.”

Breisch said Mazon State Bank already offered online banking, but services will expand with improved security. He said the new system will benefit both customers and employees.

“It’ll be much easier for everyone,” Breisch said. “It’s clear and concise, and these are resources we’ve never had.”

Though he acknowledged most businesses would like to stand on their own, as Mazon State Bank has since it opened in 1944, the two banks have been in discussions for about a year.

Leadership realized they shared the same vision for community-based banking.

Under terms of the agreement, First Community will pay $8.5 million for the assets of Mazon State Bank. The agreement has been unanimously approved by the boards of directors of both companies. Conditions to the closing of the agreement include approval of Mazon State Bank parent company First Mazon’s shareholders, regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions, the news release stated.

Everyone over 18 years of age should have a health care power-of-attorney. If you are in a serious auto accident and are now in a coma in the intensive care unit at Presence St. Joseph or Silver Cross Hospital, who is going to make decisions concerning life-sustaining treatment for you?

Do you want to be put on a ventilator machine to help you breathe? Do you want a gastrointestinal feeding tube to be inserted into your stomach?

Do you want heroic measures taken to keep you alive? Or, if it looks like your quality of life is almost gone, would you rather have “comfort care” and be allowed to die peacefully at home?

Since 1987, Illinois law allows you to designate who you want to make these critical health care and life sustaining decisions if you are unable to do so. You can designate a spouse, adult child, friend or any other person you choose to make these decisions for you. If you have no one available to make these decisions, the law allows you to designate your physician. Or if you choose, you can state in your health care power-of-attorney that you want to be kept alive as long as possible no matter what the cost or what condition your in.

Some of my clients tell me that they have a “living will”

that sets forth their wishes. If the “living will” was prepared in Illinois before 1987, then odds are it limits the decision-making authority to your physician only. If you have a “living will” read it over carefully, then you may want to update it by getting health care power-ofattorney in which you designate who you want to make these important decisions concerning your life.

Under the law, health care providers such as hospitals, nursing homes, and hospice programs are required to ask you if you have a health care power-of-attorney. Their staff has been trained to assist you in their preparation if you decide you want one. They can not, however, require that you have one before providing you with health care services.

Whoever you appoint as an agent under a health care power-of-attorney should be someone you trust and someone with whom you have had a long talk about what you want to happen if you face a critical decision concerning your health care where you are incapable of making decisions.

Q: WHY DO YOU CLAIM THAT AMA IMPAIRMENT RATINGS ARE SO BAD?

did not know that these rating are “consensus” driven, meaning the doctors who are well funded by interests other than injured persons pull numbers out of their you know what to determine what is an impairment for any given condition.

A: They are not only bad, they are evil. To anyone familiar with workers’ compensation, the goal in the end is to determine the permanency of any injuries and award fair compensation for those injuries based on the resulting disability. I have a case right now where a young man in his early 40’s did heating and air conditioning work, requiring him to be in confined spaces. He injures his knee and winds up having two knee surgeries, one of which showed a significant thinning of the cartilage under the knee cap, with both surgeries also being partial medial menisectomies for large tears. So in addition to two surgeries, which were actually more complex than I have described, the person will likely have future treatment down the road, including a reasonable likelihood of a total knee replacement.

I have in my possession a report of one of the members of the AMA Guides Task Force in Iowa for the Sixth edition, who notes a claim by one of the authors that the previous editions fail to:

He was able to get a job in the commercial field where he would not have to work in confined spaces but his opportunities in the residential field because of his knee condition are now limited. The insurance company hired a doctor who determined that his AMA Impairment Rating was 2%, even though a disability which limits an ability to work is more likely 15 to 20 times as much. 2% is slightly over $3,000.00 maximum; The doctor charged $4,700.00 for his reports and deposition. If this worker had ten surgeries the number would not change.

I took the deposition of this AMA Impairment Rating doctor, who admitted that he was only determining an AMA Impairment and not his actual disability. He

1) provide comprehensive valid reliable unbiased and evidence based ratings; 2) provide ratings that accurately reflect loss of function; and 3) provide ratings that were more than representation of a legal fiction. The task force member found that the 6th Edition not only failed to improve these problems, but it created many more of its own. Iowa refused to adopt this 6th edition, yet Illinois did.

In my humble opinion, the numbers from the 6th Edition AMA Guides represent the worst of legal fiction, as the member noted. Under the AMA Guides, only one category can be used to come up with the number. So if a person has a crush injury to the knee, fracturing his patella, causing ACL and MCL tears and medial and meniscal tears as well as condromalacia and other injuries, only the number from one of these conditions can be used, and the others are simply ignored. These Guides are clearly the antithesis of fair, and should have never been adopted as Illinois did, in September of 2011. They should be abandoned at the earliest opportunity. adno=0365112

The doctor is demanding I pay! What is going on?

A. Unfortunately, regardless of auto insurance, fault or even, in some instances, health insurance, you are responsible for the bills incurred for your treatment. The doctor can, and will, usually look to you for final payment for your treatment.

So, what can you do? First, as your question indicated, you submitted your bills to the Med Pay portion of your own auto insurance.

This is what Med Pay is for, so “Good Job!” Next, to protect yourself, insist that your medical bills get submitted to your own health insurance.

You pay premiums for your coverage and therefore should get the benefit of having health insurance. Additionally, you have no way of knowing how long it will take to get the matter resolved or bills paid through your case.

Unfortunately, some doctors may try to fight you on this and try to prevent you from submitting your bills to your health insurance. You see if the bill is submitted to your health insurance the doctor only gets the discounted price he agreed to; however, if he convinces you it’s “unfair” to have your insurance pay for your treatment then he might get full price. What he doesn’t tell you is that until there is a verdict there is no legal finding of fault. And, if things don’t work out in your favor, by listening to the doctor about the bill, YOU become responsible to pay him not just the bill, but the FULL bill, without the benefit of the discount you would have had if the insurance you paid for been used in the first place! If you’re worried about the “fairness” of your insurance paying, don’t be. They get paid back out of any monies you receive in verdict or settlement. So, in the end, using the insurances you have (Med Pay & Health Insurance), you are protecting yourself, your credit rating and your peace of mind.

Because of the many concerns regarding use of insurances to pay your medical bills, the current trend of doctors trying to circumvent insurance discounts and your desire to protect yourself and your credit, it may be easier to work with a knowledgeable and capable attorney. Wilmington Police Chief Phillip Arnold said police were called shortly after 11 p.m. by witnesses who were concerned an intoxicated man was going to get Douglas behind the wheel of his C. Davis white Chevrolet Avalanche.

“Before officers arrived on the scene, they received another call that the man had, in fact, got into his car and was pulling out of the parking lot of Tuffy’s Lounge and onto Buchanan Street,” Arnold said.

Sgt. Don Thomas reportedly saw the Avalanche disobey the stop sign at Ridge Street and nearly strike a utility pole and mailbox, Arnold said.

When Thomas activated his emergency lights, the Avalanche crossed into the other lane, continued weaving “for the next several blocks ... nearly struck parked vehicles, disobeyed three more stop signs, drove across two lawns, finally [pulled] into the driveway in the 300 block of Daniels Street,” Arnold said.

Douglas C. Davis, 55, opened the door as Thomas ran up to the vehicle.

He handed the sergeant his keys, saying, “I’m home,” but refused to get out, Arnold said.

Once Davis was taken into custody, officers “could smell a strong odor of alcohol” and took Davis to the police station where he refused to take a breath test, Arnold said.

Davis was booked into the Will County Jail on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and aggravated fleeing from police. He also was issued several traffic citations.

Davis was released from jail about 7:30 p.m. Monday after posting a $25,000 bond.

Sharon R. Ciarlette (nee Conroy), age 77. At rest Monday, March 14, 2016, at Joliet Area Community Hospice home surrounded by her loving family.

Born Aug. 9, 1938, in Joliet, to the late James E. and Helen J. (nee Gay) Conroy. Retired in 2004 with 35 years of service from the Crawford Bus Company. She was also employed at Inwood Golf Course for five years.

Sharon was a bowling coach for Town and Country Bowling for 35 years. An avid golfer and bowler who enjoyed teaching children how to bowl. Inducted into the Joliet Area Bowling Hall of Fame in 2006 and awarded “Bowling Coach of the Year” in 2005.

Survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Leonard G. Ciarlette; three children, Kimberly (Jeffrey) Parthun, Leonard J. (Lee Ann) Ciarlette and Angela Ciarlette; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey Jr., Lauren (Tim) Hatke, Christopher and Jessica Parthun, Nichole, Matthew (Melissa) and Mark Ciarlette; and one great-granddaughter, Raelynn Hatke; three siblings, Gene (Eileen) Conroy, James (Marilyn) Conroy and Patricia (the late Donald) Conroy; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her parents; and two siblings, Georgia (late Richard) Scheidt and William (Dolores) Conroy.

EVELYN MARIE CLANCY Evelyn Marie Clancy Nee Nickel, age 95, Evelyn Clancy, of Joliet, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2016. She was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church of New Lenox.

During her life, she was active in gardening and canning and enjoyed rescuing feral cats.

Mary L. Geisler (Hatchitt), former longtime resident of Venice, FL and Joliet, passed away Friday, March 4, 2016, at her current home in North Port, FL. Arrangements were by National Cremation Society of Port Charlotte.

After his dedicated service, Jerry returned home to work for his father in their family owned business, Gibby’s Plumbing, which Jerry eventually co-owned with his brothers.

He moved to New Lenox in 1972 with his family and served the community as a Township Board Member for 15 years, Park District Board Member for six years/President for four years, Lion’s Club Member and past President, and youth softball/baseball coach. He was the plumbing inspector for the villages of Manhattan and New Lenox, serving New Lenox for 25 years.

Jerry was a generous soul that never missed an opportunity to lend a hand and loved his neighbors like family. Everything he did was done with great passion, which included living a life of constant activity. Jerry was an avid golfer and bowler and loved sports of all types.

He was a true Chicago Fan, always showing his support for the Blackhawks, Bears and the White Sox. CHICAGO – A man fatally wounded during a shootout with Chicago police was identified Tuesday as a gang member and convicted felon with more than 40 arrests.

Lamar Harris, 29, was killed late Monday after he fired on several police officers investigating alleged drug activity in Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood on the city’s West Side, according to police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. Three officers were wounded.

Baby born, dies in dorm room at University of Illinois

CHAMPAIGN – University of Illinois police said they are investigating the birth and death of a baby in a campus dormitory.

Police said in a news release Tuesday that police went to a room in Bousfield Hall around 5 p.m. Sunday to check on a student who had reportedly been in a dorm bathroom for several hours. The student said she had the stomach flu and did not need help.

But after receiving more information from someone else familiar with the situation, officers found evidence that a baby had been born in the bathroom.

Police said the student told officers she had given birth earlier in the day.

The deceased baby boy was found in a backpack she carried.

The cause of death isn’t known and an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

GE announces plans for 160 tech jobs in Chicago area

CHICAGO – GE has announced plans to create 160 Chicago-area jobs focused on digital advancements in transportation and health care.

General Electric Co. announced Tuesday the selection of Chicago for the lead office of GE Transportation’s Digital Solutions business, which will employ 100. GE also will create 60 jobs in its digital health care business in suburban Barrington.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel called the decision “a tremendous vote of confidence” in the city’s future.

The $130 billion global industrial company announced in January it was relocating its headquarters from Fairfield, Connecticut, to Boston’s Seaport District.

GE employs more than 2,000 in the Chicago area and had considered Chicago as its headquarters before deciding on Boston.

Boston offered the company up to $25 million in direct property tax relief and other incentives.

Volunteers repair cemetery damaged by rally attendees

BLOOMINGTON – Landscaping crews and private citizens are volunteering to help repair a Bloomington cemetery damaged by motorists attending a rally for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

The Trump rally on Sunday at the Synergy Flight Center was across the street from East Lawn Memorial Gardens. More than 3,000 people attended the rally.

Cemetery general manager Jim Hough told the Pantagraph that at least three headstones were damaged, and tire tracks covered dozens of others.

Local firefighters, landscapers and other volunteers have come out since

One officer was shot in the back, another in the foot and a third in the chest, authorities said, adding his body armor likely deflected the bullet.

A gun used by the dead suspect was recovered at the scene, authorities said.

The shooting follows the mortal wounding of an undercover narcotics officer in Maryland who was shot by a colleague as a gunman attacked a police station Sunday night.

Police said in a statement that the city’s Independent Police Review Authorities will investigate the shooting.

The officers involved will be put on administrative duties for 30 days.

Driver services facility in Wheaton set to close

WHEATON – A driver services facility located in downtown Wheaton will close next week after the state failed to pay rent on the building for more than six months.

The secretary of state’s office has confirmed that 138 driver services facilities stopped receiving rent payments in July because of an ongoing stalemate in the Legislature over Illinois’ budget. According to a spokesman from the office, the Wheaton location is the first to shut down due to rent not being paid on time.

The Daily Herald reported that the facility has been in operation since the late 1990s and serves about 9,000 people per month. The nine employees who work at the facility will be reassigned to other locations.

House conservatives reject budget plan

WASHINGTON – Dealing an embarrassing setback to House Speaker Paul Ryan, tea party conservatives are blocking a leadership-backed budget plan as the candidacy of GOP front-runner Donald Trump stokes anxiety among congressional Republicans facing an angry, anti-Washington electorate.

The move by the House Freedom Caucus, the same band of conservatives that toppled Ryan’s predecessor, John Boehner, would mean that the House would fail to pass a budget for the first time since Republicans reclaimed control of the chamber in 2011. For years, the GOP attacked Senate Democrats for the same failure.

Ryan, R-Wis., cited “all of the anxiety that’s coming to a crescendo in this country” for the reluctance of conservatives to endorse the budget plan, which calls for higher agency operating budgets as agreed to in last year’s budget deal with President Barack Obama.

The fiscal blueprint, released Tuesday

by Budget Committee Chairman Tom Price, R-Ga., relies on eliminating health care subsidies and other coverage provided by Obama’s health care law, sharp cuts to Medicaid, and reprises a plan devised by Ryan years ago that would transform Medicare into a voucher-like program for future retirees. A deteriorating fiscal picture required Price to propose deeper cuts than ever before.

The annual budget debate gives lawmakers of all stripes a chance to weigh in on the nation’s fiscal woes. The government borrows about 16 cents of every dollar it spends and faces a potential debt crisis at some point if Washington’s warring factions don’t address the problem.

As in past years, GOP leaders have no plans to implement the severe cuts recommended by the nonbinding blueprint. Instead, the main goal of the budget is to set in motion the annual appropriations process, in which the 12 spending bills that set agency operating budgets are produced. That’s the $1.1 trillion “discretionary” portion of the $4 trillion-plus federal budget that is passed by Congress each year.

Many conservatives oppose the additional $46 billion or so in higher spending that the deal with Obama permits for the upcoming round of appropriations bills for fiscal 2017 starting Oct. 1; it comes on top of about $66 billion in higher spending for the ongoing budget year.

In sum, conservatives are tired that sweeping budget cuts are never implemented while Obama prevails on more money for agency operating budgets. A plan to advance real spend-

House speaker, R-Wis. ing cuts along with the nonbinding budget targets didn’t win over many tea party converts, in part because it’s plain the cuts wouldn’t make it through the Senate.

“There are a number of us struggling with it,” said Rep. Mark Sanford, R-S.C. “Savings that are an illusion are not savings.”

The debate comes as outsider presidential candidates such as Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas are roiling the GOP electorate with an anti-Washington message. Approval ratings for lawmakers remain near all-time lows, and many conservatives fear casting House votes that could alienate the ardent conservatives who dominate the Republican Party.

“We’re the body of government that’s closest to the people. We’re up for election every other year,” Ryan said. “And there’s just a lot of anxiety that’s out there.”

The Freedom Caucus announced Monday night that it won’t support the budget measure. The move by the bloc of about three dozen conservatives reflects enduring opposition from tea party lawmakers to budget and debt deals with Obama.

“House leadership has continually asked the Republican conference to support President Obama’s budget levels, even though the national debt passed the $19 trillion mark in January,” a Freedom Caucus statement said.

Although Republicans have a sweeping majority in the House – 246 to 188 – the loss of about 20 of those conservatives would make it impossible to pass a budget. Every Democrat is sure to oppose the measure.

Price is nonetheless pressing ahead with a panel vote Wednesday on the 10-year measure, which relies on huge spending cuts – $6.5 trillion over the coming decade – to demonstrate that the budget can be balanced.

“Surrendering to the status quo or failing to act boldly will mean Americans today and in the future will have less opportunity and less security,” Price said in a statement.

Democrats blasted the measure for proposing cuts deeper than any of their prior plans.

General Assembly should put constitutional reforms on ballot

To the Editor: As a former Illinois budget director under Gov. Pat Quinn for the four years after the Great Recession, I am disappointed in the gridlock in our current governor’s recent talks.

Unpaid state bills are rising back to peak levels. Meanwhile, our new governor refuses to implement either sufficient spending cuts or new revenues.

Quinn achieved fiscal balance by reducing unpaid bills $876 million in his last full year.

Unpaid bills at the end of FY14 were down to $2.404 billion after a recessionary peak of nearly $7 billion. Positive cash flow balances were creating the stable platform necessary to address longer-term priorities.

Now, instead, the governor uses the intentional buildup of unpaid bills as a blackmail club for political purposes. This should be rejected.

The resulting political gridlock is causing damage to the economy, higher education, infrastructure, private sector vendors and, most importantly, the people of Illinois. Rauner promised to “shake up Springfield,” but it is clear the only shaking taking place is to the social fabric of our state.

Our 1970 Constitution did not assume the abusive use of gubernatorial budgetary vetoes as a blackmail tool to seek other substantive and political change to our economic system.

Bypassing vetoes, the General Assembly can fix this by placing constitutional reforms on the ballot in 2016. A package of reforms to eliminate gridlock while also letting the voters in the state consider a millionaire’s tax might not make our state’s 13 oligarchs happy, but it would add fiscal balance benefiting millions in our state.

By the end of the normal veto session in November, it is obvious there is a structural and procedural flaw in Illinois government. This flaw could be addressed through a deadlock mechanism in the Illinois Constitution like the one we have now for reapportionment deadlocks.

Bypassing the gridlock and blackmail, we once again could move our state toward the fiscal stability achieved during the tough budget fights a few years ago. It is time to let the common sense of the voters overrule the political and painful schemes of current Gov. Bruce Rauner.

Don’t play taxpayers off each other

SPRINGFIELD – For decades, state governments have engaged in the unsavory practice of doling out subsidies to businesses that pit one state against another when deciding where to locate an enterprise.

Such practices are not only counterproductive but just plain wrong.

After all, the best way to help businesses in Illinois – and any state – is to improve the state’s overall business climate by reducing taxes and regulations and creating a level playing field where firms can compete.

But politicians like to cut ribbons and claim credit for the jobs they “brought” into the state.

Sadly, Illinois and Missouri politicians are no exception.

And the most recent competition between the Show Me State and the Land of Lincoln is even worse.

Illinois hopes to lure a federal facility to the Belleville area by providing as much as $115 million in infrastructure improvements to a site near Scott Air Force Base, Illinois News Network reported. The sought-after organization is known as the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.

The taxpayers of St. Clair County also are offering 182 acres of land for the coveted $1.2 billion facility.

It would employ 3,100 people, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Missouri officials are countering

REEDER REPORT Scott Reeder with incentive packages of their own that total $190 million, the Belleville News-Democrat reported.

The agency now is located in downtown St. Louis, but said it needs to move to a location where it can expand.

“This is the ultimate race to the bottom,” said Pete Sepp, president of the National Taxpayers Union.

“One level of taxpayers is shelling out to keep another tax-funded entity happy. It is a competition that only taxpayers can ultimately lose.”

I don’t particularly like it when large corporations play one state against another to milk subsidies from taxpayers. Companies should pick the best location based on the state’s overall business climate and the needs of it customers.

But there is something especially unbecoming about the federal government pitting one state against another to build a federal facility.

After all, the residents of Missouri and Illinois are federal taxpayers who already are helping fund this facility. Why should they chip in extra just for the privilege of having it in their state?

St. Louis and the Illinois met-

ro-east area are essentially one economic area. No matter which state prevails, the agency will remain in the region.

From a strictly economic point of view – not a governmental one – all that seems to be at stake is whether the 3,100 workers commute to a site in the metro-east or St. Louis.

The competition between the two states likely will not generate a single extra federal job for the area. But it will further deplete limited state resources.

Sepp said the upside for whichever state “wins” the competition is quite limited.

“The very minor upside might be that a few businesses will be able to sell hamburgers and coffee to hungry employees on the other side of the river. But all of that is transitory.”

It is transitory, he said, because it simply moves economic activity around in the region. It doesn’t generate new activity.

One would hope the federal government will pick the best site to serve its needs, regardless of what state and local governments are offering.

Taxpayers deserve that much.

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Lincoln-Way West’s boys basketball team realized that it would need to turn in a special performance in order to knock off Morgan Park.

West was going up against a program that featured the Chicago-area player of the year and had won two state titles and then finished third a year ago while winning 107 games over a four-year span.

But the Warriors proved to be up to the ultimate challenge despite few giving them any hope of continuing their memorable season.

Using just six players, one who fouled out, West overcame an 11-point

deficit in the second quarter to stun the Mustangs, 68-60, in Tuesday’s Class 3A Joliet Central Supersectional.

The Warriors (21-9), who had won 40 fewer games in their seven-year history than Morgan Park (26-4) had during the past four years, followed their exciting comeback victory over Hillcrest in the sectional finals to become the first Lincoln-Way basketball program to reach the state semifinals.

Morgan Park, which featured Sun-Times player of the year Charlie Moore, came in ranked second in Class 3A, while the Warriors were unranked. Only a handful of unranked squads had ever knocked off a team that was ranked second in a quarterfi-

nal contest, and none of the others had so little history to fall back on.

But none of that mattered as West used an excellent game plan that saw it shoot the ball well, limit Mustang standouts Jarrin Randall and Moore and slow the tempo down.

As a result, the Warriors advanced to Friday’s 12:15 p.m. semifinal at Peoria’s Carver Arena, where they will meet Peoria Manual, (26-4) which beat Rockford Boylan, 61-58, in DeKalb.

“The guys stuck through with everything that we’ve been preaching every single day in practice,” West coach Brian Flaherty said. “We kept telling them to get tougher and that was one of the toughest efforts I’ve seen, both mentally and physically in

my years of coaching.

“We really wanted to slow them down; that was one of our major goals.

Coming in, I thought this game was going to be all about tempo and I thought if we could control it at the pace we wanted it to be, we’d put ourselves in position to win. Our kids were warriors tonight. I can’t say enough good things about them. I’m not even sure if this has set in with me yet.”

The Mustangs used a 13-0 run to grab a 25-14 lead more than two minutes into the second quarter.

But West answered with a 9-0 spurt to get back in the game to trail, 34-27, at halftime.

It was not the ideal night to have that happen.

The Tigers were bidding for a berth in Friday’s Class 4A state semifinals at Peoria, but could not accomplish the mission as Benet Academy scored a 67-59 victory in the Northern Illinois University Supersectional.

The young Tigers (21-10) were down, 54-39, after three quarters as the Redwings (30-3) broke down West’s pressure.

Benet still led, 59-47, with 4:09 left in the game, but that’s when the Tigers’ relentless nature came to the forefront. The Redwings, who had committed zero turnovers in the first half and two through three quarters, had the ball stolen on three successive possessions.

“That’s how we play, get the opponent to turn it over,” West coach Nick DiForti said. “You could tell from our kids’ eyes and bodies that they could

feel the momentum had shifted.”

“We saved all our turnovers for the fourth quarter, I think,” Benet coach Gene Heidkamp said. “I think they scored seven points in a stretch where we never got the ball across the center line.”

Mike Smith scored a layup after his own steal, Trevian Bell scored after the second steal and Jason Bingham got off the bench and hit two free throws with 3:03 left to make it 59-53.

Bell was supposed to be at the line but was forced to sub out because of a cut on his arm.

Bell returned and scored from inside the lane with 1:57 left to make it 60-55. The Tigers trapped Benet guard Justin Enochs on the sideline, but he managed to throw the ball off a West defender, and Benet retained possession.

Dan Sobolewski snuck inside for a layup off the inbounds pass, and Benet never led by less than six points the rest of the way.

“A lot of people talking were talking about next year because we are young, but I kept telling the guys we could do

some good things this year,” said Tigers junior guard Teyvion Kirk, who scored 17 points while Bell had 19, including 17 in the second half.

Bell also had seven rebounds, but Benet outrebounded the Tigers, 27-25.

Both teams shot well, the Redwings hitting 21 of 41 for 51.2 percent and West going 24 of 47, good for a .511 clip.

However, Benet hit 7 of 11 3-point attempts over the final three quarters and hit 18 of 26 free throws to the Tigers’ 7 of 10.

West opened the game in good shape, grabbing leads of 9-2 and 11-4 before the Redwings’ offense began to solve the Tigers’ defense. Jason Malonga hit a 15-footer from the baseline to close the first quarter, and Benet hit 8 of 12 shots to outscore West, 26-12, in the second quarter.

Guard James Dockery was the chief culprit as he scored eight points while Benet was completing a 12-0 run to lead, 16-11. West cut it to 16-14 as Kirk hit a tough 20-footer, but the Redwings kept up the offensive pressure. Kirk hit another long 3-pointer to get the Tigers back within 29-21, and Darnell

Smith dropped in a putback just before the halftime buzzer to make it 32-23.

Benet did not commit a turnover in the first half. West committed the game’s first turnover with 6:46 left in the second quarter, and the Tigers committed five more turnovers before the half ended.

“Our season was ups and downs, peaks and valleys,” DiForti said. “We had a good game against Benet at Pontiac, then lost a heartbreaker against Manual.

“We had a lull after Pontiac, when we played some more very good teams, but we came back at the beginning of February, and we’re playing juniors and sophomores. The sky’s the limit for this group. They could have thrown in towel against very good Benet team, but they did not.”

“They’re a great team with a great coach,” Heidkamp said of West. “We knew they would come back at us down the stretch.”

“I’ve been telling our guys that as juniors and sophomores, you experienced a season most people never experience,” DiForti said.

Shaw Media Correspondent PLAINFIELD – Plainfield East finished the past two years with backto-back third-place finishes in the Southwest Prairie Conference and a record-setting 20-12 season last year.

What will the Bengals do for an encore?

They will start to answer that question with three games this weekend in downstate Jacksonville before the home opener Tuesday against Downers Grove North.

The SPC season begins April 5.

“We’ll be ready to go,” fourth-year varsity senior pitcher/outfielder Drew DeMumbrum said. “This weekend in Jacksonville, we’re going to figure out a lot of things.”

“We lost in the bottom of the seventh by a run in the state tournament last year after posting the most wins we’ve ever had in a season,” Plainfield East coach Adam O’Reel said.

“What’s the next step? Getting to a regional championship game and winning that one. We’ll see what kind of legacy these seniors want to leave.”

DeMumbrum should leave a record-setting legacy by the time his fourth varsity season is over. The senior pitcher/outfielder is a two-time, All-SPC pick and a virtual lock for a third. He will leave the school holding nearly every offensive and pitching record for a season and career.

“It’s his senior year and we’re anxious to see how he wants to end his career,” O’Reel said.

A year ago, DeMumbrum went 5-3 with 45 strikeouts on the mound and led the Bengals in hitting (.438), RBIs (32) and runs scored (28).

“Our pitching and defense will be keys for us again,” DeMumbrum said. “Our pitching and defense will carry us and our offense will be fine.

We’re going to play some small ball to win, but that’s OK with us.”

Mitch Koran was 6-1 on the mound and an All-SPC a year ago, and Joe Antonopoulos and Jacob Geiger logged quality innings.

“We have Koran and Joey Antonopoulos coming back as starters, which is big,” DeMumbrum said. “I think our pitching will be our go-to thing this year, which is huge for us.”

“We don’t have guys who can throw 87 (mph) or above, so we’re going to have to play defense,” said O’Reel, entering his eighth season as coach. “If you can play defense, you’re going to be slotted into the lineup.”

“We have to throw strikes, play defense and we’ll see if we can score enough runs,” O’Reel said of the Bengals, who averaged six strikeouts a game at the plate last year. “We hit .305 last year with a lot of those guys coming back. If you defend and pitching can be consistent, you are never going to be out of a game.”

“I think we’ll be in the mix,” DeMumbrum said. “Our league is no joke. The whole conference this year is going to be tough. We’re going to have to bring our ‘A’ game three days every week to have a chance.”

Plainfield North and Minooka have had a stranglehold on the top two spots in the SPC, seemingly since it was formed a little more than a decade ago.

“Our conference is loaded this year,” O’Reel said. “North and Minooka are always strong and every year they have finished one-two in the conference. The last two years, we’ve come in third and I can see us right there again this year.”

Football linked with CTE; could it affect $1 billion deal?

On the contentious issue of concussions, the NFL has relented on a once-steadfast stance.

Yes, the league acknowledged publicly for the first time, there is a connection between football and the devastating brain disease known as CTE. The NFL backed Tuesday the comments made at a congressional panel

by Jeff Miller, the league’s senior vice president for health and safety, that his surprising words “accurately reflect the view of the NFL,” league spokesman Brian McCarthy said.

The league has long denied proof linking the sport and the condition called chronic traumatic encephalopathy. As recently as the week of the Super Bowl, Dr. Mitch Berger, a member of the league’s head, neck and spine committee, refused to draw a direct line from football to CTE. So that’s what made Miller’s admission, at a round-table discussion about concussions, somewhat startling.

“The answer to that question is certainly yes, but there are also a number of questions that come with that,” Miller said, deferring to physicians on the science of the subject of CTE evidence.

ma and associated with symptoms such as memory loss, depression and progressive dementia. Players diagnosed after their deaths include Hall of Famers Junior Seau, Ken Stabler and Mike Webster.

Four Democratic members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee sent a letter Tuesday to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, asking for answers by March 29 on the league’s plans to protect both NFL players and those at the youth levels.

Critics of the NFL’s proposed $1 billion plan to settle concussion claims called Miller’s sudden acknowledgement of a football-CTE connection a game changer. The settlement is being appealed by players concerned that it excludes future cases of CTE, what they consider “the signature disease of football.”

The deal announced by lead plaintiffs’ lawyers and the NFL in August 2013 would instead pay up to $4 million for prior deaths involving CTE. “Given that, the settlement’s failure to compensate present and future CTE is inexcusable,” lawyer Steven Molo wrote Tuesday in a letter to the federal appeals court in Philadelphia that is hearing his appeal.

Patience pays off when it comes to the best yeast rolls

I was one of those kids who loved camp. I loved being away. I loved all of the activities. And I loved the food.

Well, at least I loved the homemade yeast rolls that graced the table at every meal. I ate them in pairs, hot out of the oven, their tops salty with butter and the aroma so heady I would inhale as deeply as I could before devouring them. To this day, yeast rolls can transport me. They are like a warm blanket that envelopes you in pure comfort.

I have tried a lot of rolls in my adult life trying to find one that would come even close to my camp experience. But each one has come up short. That is, until I walked into the Harrison Smith House, a small restaurant in Bardstown, Kentucky.

Bardstown is famous for bourbon.

Several distilleries – including Jim Beam, Heaven Hill Distilleries and Maker’s Mark – operate in and around Bardstown. But it is now famous to me for the best yeast rolls I’ve had since camp. And believe me, they are worth the trip. But while you’re there, you also might as well partake in a little

Bourbon exploration.

The rolls are the handiwork of Josh Smouse, who is the chef de cuisine of the Harrison Smith House. Like the owners, Newman Miller and Justin Hughes, he previously cooked in Louisville and Chicago. The three have been friends, roommates and colleagues throughout their culinary careers. Now back in their home state of Kentucky, they are bringing a traveled palate to their Southern table.

But the rolls, offered as a side dish, never traveled out of state. Josh started making them first for his family at Christmas. He later decided to try them out at the restaurant, where he substituted them for the more common cornbread, and the rest is history. Smouse makes a minimum of 60 rolls a day, but my version of his recipe will produce a more reasonable 16. If you want to make more, no problem; the recipe doubles easily.

This recipe is pretty foolproof and doesn’t need much attention or kneading. The real secret is patience, as you will have to go through four rises and lots of waiting to make these tender, flaky and delicate buttery yeast rolls.

Music is effective medical therapy Dear Dr. K: I recently visited a friend in the hospital. During my visit, a music therapist came in and played music for her.

The idea of music therapy seems very New Age to me. Is there any evidence for it?

Dear Reader: Music therapists are accomplished musicians who use their knowledge of music and its effects to help people get through medical challenges, such as recovering from a stroke or healing after surgery. Music therapists may play music for you or with you. They even may teach you how to play an instrument.

This all sounds great. But, as you say, it also sounds pretty New Age, and you asked whether there is any evidence behind it. Actually, there is. A growing body of research attests music therapy can improve medical outcomes and quality of life in a variety of ways.

For example, music therapy: • Improves the experience of invasive procedures. Controlled clinical trials looked at people having colonoscopies, cardiac angiography and knee surgery. Those who listened to music before their procedure had reduced anxiety and a reduced need for sedatives. Those who listened to music in the operating room reported less discomfort during their procedure. Hearing music in the recovery room reduced the use of opioid painkillers.

• Restores lost speech. Stroke or traumatic brain injury can damage the region on the left side of the brain that is responsible for speech. Music therapy can help.

How? The ability to sing originates in the right side of the brain. People who are recovering from stroke or brain injury can work around the injury to the left side of their brain by first singing their thoughts. Then, gradually, they can drop the melody.

• Reduces side effects of cancer therapy.

It is a memorable experience to see people who appear terminally lost to the world, barely able to communicate in words, come alive to music.

Most of the studies I refer to have used classical music and popular songs. I’m not aware of any studies using newer forms of popular music, such as punk, rap or heavy metal. Do they, too, relieve anxiety, promote wound healing and help restore speech and memory? Call me old-fashioned, but I doubt it.

Rex Stout, who wrote the Nero Wolfe novels, said, “To read of a detective’s daring finesse or ingenious stratagem is a rare joy.”

In today’s deal from Steve Conrad of Manhasset, New York, South is in three no-trump, faced with finesses in three suits. What is his optimum strategy?

This is the most common auction of all, leading to the most popular contract. But what is the least common contract?

South starts with five top tricks: one spade, two hearts, one diamond and one club. If both black-suit finesses are working, that would get his winner total up to nine. Or if both diamond honors are onside, that would also be good enough. But if a finesse loses, the defenders will presumably establish West’s heart suit.

Then, if West can regain the lead, he might cash too many tricks for declarer.

That suggests starting with the spade finesse, because the spade king is West’s only possible entry. But getting to the dummy for that finesse introduces other complications.

Much simpler is to take two diamond finesses. The first loses to East’s jack and a heart comes back, but South ducks that, wins the next heart, then -- key play -- runs the club queen. (Agreed, if declarer deduces who has which kings, this isn’t necessary, but it avoids guesswork.)

East takes that trick and shifts to a spade, but declarer wins with his ace, repeats the diamond finesse, and has nine tricks from one spade, two hearts, four diamonds and two clubs.

The least common contract is five no-trump, which has all of the risk for no gain.
