bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A forensic pathologist testified Monday that further examination of tissue samples could determine whether an infant died in 2009 as the result of “shaken baby” injuries or birth defects.

Unfortunately, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has misplaced the girl’s brain, lawyers said during a hearing to dismiss murder charges against her father, Mark J. Trubiano, 45.

On Dec. 27, 2009, an ambulance was called to Trubiano’s residence in the 700 block of Hemlock Lane in Lockport after 2-month-old Storey Trubiano stopped breathing. Storey was taken to Children’s Memorial Hospital, where she died three days later. The Will-Grundy

Major Crimes Task Force investigated the case after medical staff noticed “suspicious injuries” and Trubiano allegedly confessed to shaking the girl.

Trubiano was arrested and released from the Will County jail the following week after posting a $3 million bond.

Defense attorney Paul DeLuca said the first autopsy performed by Dr. Tera Jones for the Cook County medical examiner determined Storey’s Mark J. death was caused by “ceTrubiano rebral injuries due to blunt head trauma due to child abuse.”

On Monday, Dr. Shaku Teas testified about a second autopsy she performed under a court order in February 2010 and another examination of the brain

she attended five months later. “[I was told] I can’t touch [the brain], talk or take photographs, and I did not,” Teas said.

Teas said that, if possible, she would’ve taken photos from additional angles and obtained more samples.

Another court order required the medical examiner’s office to preserve the brain, but it has been misfiled and has not been located in the last six years.

Teas said the reports she has seen might show the area where the two sides of the brain are connected is not fully developed. That condition could have occurred before the baby was born and led to a birth defect, she testified.

DeLuca and Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Fred Harvey told Judge Daniel Kennedy there will be further hearings before the case is brought to trial.

Severity of Tuesday storm uncertain for residents in Will, Grundy counties

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Meteorologists are forecasting rain Tuesday in northern Illinois that could put a damper on voters rushing to the polls for the primary election.

But National Weather Service meteorologist Amy Seeley said that as of 1:15 p.m.

Kendall counties are expected to be in the 65- to 68-degree range, with wind gusts of 25 to 30 mph, according to NWS forecasts.

There is a 60 percent to 70 percent chance of precipitation in the area.

“Over all of the area, there is a slight risk for severe thunderstorms,” Seeley said.

Precipitation is expected to clear overnight into Wednesday, creating a mostly sunny day with highs near 60 degrees. The wind is expected to stick around, with gusts forecast as high as 35 mph.

New Lenox police investigate 4 residential burglaries The HERALD–NEWS NEW LENOX – The New Lenox Police Department is investigating four recent residential burglaries.

The burglaries occurred in the 400 block of South Pine Street, 200 block of East Fourth Avenue and 500 block of South Cedar Road, according to a department news release. The Pine Street incident was reported March 4, and the other three were reported Friday,

Deputy Chief Robert Pawlisz said.

In each case, entry was gained by the removal or cutting of a screen to force open a window, and property was stolen, the news release stated. In one incident, a vehicle parked in a garage was stolen and later recovered.

Several residents described seeing a man in the area where the burglaries occurred, and who also was seen in the stolen vehicle, according to the news

release. He was described as white; 30 to 40 years old; 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall; slender; having long gray or light brown hair in a ponytail; and wearing a blue flannel shirt.

Police are asking residents to report any suspicious activity immediately by calling 911, calling the department at its nonemergency number at 815-485-2500 or submitting an anonymous crime tip call at 815-462-6111.

CHICAGO – Elected officials and self-described train buffs were among those who boarded Monday’s inaugural afternoon outbound train on the Heritage Corridor to celebrate the rail line’s first additional run since 1999.

JOLIET – Rialto Square Theatre General Manager Randy Green’s departure appears to be a matter of time as theater and city officials investigate about four months of unpaid payroll taxes totalling more than $120,000.

Other unpaid Rialto bills could amount to nearly $400,000.

The Rialto board on Monday tabled for one week a decision on a separation agreement with Green but did vote against an early renewal of his contract, which expires at the end of the year.

O’Dekirk and some council members said they want the city’s new inspector general to investigate the Rialto situation. The city’s finance director already has begun examining the Rialto’s financial records.

The city has given the Rialto a $10,000 advance on its second-quarter payment to take care of the state portion of unpaid payroll taxes.

The city’s annual contribution to the Rialto comes in four quarterly payments, and Vera has asked the city for an advance on the next payment, which normally would come in April.

But council members agreed that the city should not provide the theater with any more money until finances are clarified.

“As much as I support the Rialto theater, I cannot support a bailout at this time,” Councilwoman Jan Quillman said.

Some council members emphasized that it’s not clear at all whether an advance on the April payment would stabilize the Rialto.

“We’re talking about taking April, May and June money, and giving it to them in March to pay November, December and January bills,” Councilman Larry Hug said.

Since November, the Rialto has only paid one week of payroll taxes, according to city officials.

Rialto board Chairman Dan Vera made a brief statement at that board’s meeting that he learned of the unpaid payroll taxes in mid-February. Vera later told reporters that he learned the taxes had not been paid from the Rialto’s finance manager after Green had told him the theater was meeting its tax obligations.

City officials, however, said Vera knew of the problem as early as mid-December, although Green may have misled him as to whether the taxes were paid.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said the city ultimately might have to spend more than its annual $600,000 contribution to the Rialto to keep the theater afloat.

But first, he said, the city needs to investigate theater operations.

“Before we commit any more money, we need to know what we’re looking at,” O’Dekirk said at a City Council meeting that included a review of the Rialto financial situation.

The council meeting followed the Rialto board’s meeting, which O’Dekirk attended.

City officials said the Rialto also has $395,000 in unpaid vendor bills, although it’s unclear how much of that is money put up to finance shows that

Joliet may send inspector general to investigate Rialto

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city may send its new inspector general to the Rialto Square Theater to investigate who knew what about unpaid payroll taxes that mounted to more than $120,000.

Joliet in January hired Chris Regis, then a prosecutor in the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office, to the newly created position of inspector general to investigate waste and corruption in city government.

Sending him to the Rialto would amount to the city’s inspector general, who can subpoena witnesses, investi-

gating another unit of government.

But Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said he believed the inspector general has authority to look at the Rialto situation.

While the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority, which oversees the Rialto, is another unit of government, three of its four board members are appointed by the mayor. Also the city provides $600,000 of annual funding for the Rialto.

Among questions O’Dekirk said he would like answered is who knew what and when about the Rialto’s unpaid payroll taxes.

O’Dekirk pointed to a December city budget meeting when Rialto General

Manager Randy Green faced a series of questions from Councilman Larry Hug about the theater’s operations as the council considered annual Rialto funding.

“Certainly, when Mr. Green appeared before this council and had a heated discussion with Mr. Hug, he knew the theater had not paid taxes in November and December,” O’Dekirk said at the City Council meeting on Monday.

Councilman Jim McFarland noted that the council had received a memo last week indicating that Dan Vera, chairman of the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Au-

thority, knew in mid-December that payroll taxes had not been paid.

City Manager Jim Hock, who wrote the memo, said Vera in mid-December directed Green to pay the taxes. When Vera tried later to confirm taxes were paid, Hock said, “Mr. Green deflected those questions and never gave him a straight answer.”

In his memo, Hock wrote that when Green was on vacation in early March, Vera went to Rialto finance officer Dale Evans and was told the taxes had not been paid since November.

Vera said at the Rialto board meeting on Monday he learned in mid-February that the taxes had not been paid.

Open Meetings Act violations alleged

fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – A Fairmont School District 89 board member has requested that the Illinois Attorney General’s Office investigate alleged Open Meetings Act violations that he contends took place at February board meetings.

The requests come from board Vice President Joseph Ryan, who has quarreled with board President Katie Ulmer during several board meetings this year over agenda items and board policy.

Ryan has said the new board – which gained new members and leadership after the April 2015 election – is “terrible” and alleged that Ulmer and board member Sylvia Dotson are trying to get rid of Superintendent Sonya Whitaker. Both have denied the allegations.

Ryan’s review requests are for alleged OMA violations at the Feb. 1 and Feb. 11 meetings. Ryan declined to elaborate on the violations, as he said they concerned closed-session matters at both meetings.

However, Ryan said he withdrew his request for the Feb. 1 meeting after speaking with the Attorney General’s Office and learning the board went into closed session under the all necessary exceptions.

Ryan and Ulmer engaged in a heated argument at the Feb. 11 meeting over freezing district-issued credit cards, which Ryan opposed.

He questioned at the meeting if the proposed agenda items were legal or followed board policy.

Ulmer said in response that she twice checked with attorneys to see if she was “doing the right thing” and that she was assured she was.

She said she spoke with attorneys from Scariano, Himes & Petrarca. The board later would approve hiring the law firm at the Feb. 17 meeting to replace Canna and Canna, which resigned in January.

In his OMA review request of the Feb. 11 meeting, Ryan stated the agenda was constructed by Ulmer in violation of District 89 policy because she did not work with Whitaker on it.

He also stated some of what was discussed in closed session during the Feb. 11 meeting “spilled out [into open session] about the letter on credit card expenditure.”

He stated it was unintentional, but one board member mentioned the amount of charges on the card and Ulmer answered him concerning the amount, saying the card was “being mishandled.”

Annie Thompson, spokeswoman for the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, said the office was looking into Ryan’s request to review the Feb. 11 meeting.

In his request for a review of that meeting, which Shaw Media obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, Ryan stated that he believed “OMA is being continually broken by this board.”

“This is what I have witnessed by the [Board of Education] on how closed session board meetings are conducted,” he wrote.

Ulmer said she was aware of Ryan’s OMA review requests. She said that since she became board president – Ryan’s previous position – everything she does is “a violation according to Joseph Ryan.”

“It’s not that we did anything that was not supposed to have been done,” she said.

At the Feb. 11 meeting, the board approved freezing all district-issued credit cards for what Ulmer said was alleged misuse. She declined to elaborate on the misuse.

Late Monday morning, residents at a house near South Union Street and East Third Avenue started a bonfire, burning excess wood, said Joliet

police officers at the scene.

Smoke from the bonfire reached to the sky.

Because the residents were not allowed to start a bonfire on their property, the police said Joliet firefighters were called to the home to put out the fire. A fire truck left the scene at 11:30 a.m.

No one was injured, Joliet police said.

JOLIET – Despite the allure of extra tax revenue, some county leaders are concerned about a resurrected federal proposal that would give state and local governments more power to collect sales tax from businesses with no physical presence within the governments’ borders.

The National Association of Counties is behind efforts to pass the Marketplace Fairness Act, which permits the collection of existing sales and use tax from remote sellers. There’s about $26.1 billion in tax revenue not being collected, according to the association.

The topic was up for discussion last week when members of the Will County Board’s Legislative and Policy Committee received an update from the county’s Washington, D.C., lobbyist.

The bill remains a point of contention in Congress because of two polarizing dynamics: the Internet’s exploding growth as a retail marketplace, and the desire to protect small

businesses from over-taxation.

Committee member Ray Tuminello, R-New Lenox, told members he has concerns about putting the Marketplace Fairness Act on the county’s federal legislative agenda without assurance that there are protections or exemptions in place for small businesses.

“I want to make sure we protect those individuals … and not have these big corporations stepping on us. … We need something [in the law] that protects the little guy,” said Tuminello, who owns his own manufacturing business.

John Greuling, president and CEO of the Will County Center for Economic Development, said that although the center has yet to take a position on the bill, its one caveat would be to have a fail-safe protection for small business.

Will County’s lobbyist, Brett Garson of Smith Dawson & Andrews, said that appears to be one of the big holdouts in Congress at the moment.

“That’s going to be something that has to be hashed out by leadership,” Garson told members.

A Polar Plunge event will take place at noon Saturday at Leisure Lake Resort, 21900 Southwest Frontage Road, Joliet.

Special Olympics Illinois holds Polar Plunge events to raise money for its athletes. This year, the nonprofit will have the event at more than 20 locations statewide.

According to Special Olympics Illinois, 19 Polar Plunge events have been held with more than 6,000 participants – or Plungers – and they have raised about $1.5 million.

bstanley@shawmedia.com Seventeen men were cited last week for lewd conduct in Will County forest preserves, authorities said.

Forest preserve police Lt. Tracy Chapman said undercover officers were approached by suspects and propositioned for sexual activity Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at Hammel Woods in Shorewood, the Keepataw Preserve in Lemont and Veterans Woods in Romeoville.

Chapman said the enforcement efforts are not designed to target anyone, but to ensure public locations remain safe.

“We want everyone to feel comfortable in all of the preserves and facilities,” Chapman said.

Two men also were charged with public indecency, one was charged with misdemeanor battery, and one was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Chapman said other enforcement details will continue throughout the year.

Michelle McKay, a member of Metra’s Citizen Advisory Board and Lemont resident, said she is happy to have the additional service in the event she needs to leave work early.

“Before I had to take the entire day off just to see the doctor,” McKay said.

But McKay did question whether this new midafternoon run will see the ridership it needs to remain warranted. A later outbound train would be more beneficial for daily com-

muters such as herself.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited. Any service is [appreciated],” McKay said. “But many commuters probably can’t use this on a regular basis.”

The addition expands weekday service on the Heritage Corridor line from six to seven trains – with three inbound morning and four outbound afternoon and evening trains.

The new outbound run will cost Metra about $300,000 annually with the use of existing equipment, Orseno said.

Joe Petric of Morris, a self-described train buff, said he boarded the inaugural train Monday to be part of a historic event. A founding member of the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Historical Society, Petric said he loves all things rail. He said his father worked the rail line decades ago when it still was operated under Gulf, Mobile & Ohio.

The Heritage Corridor is the least-used Metra line, with just 2,400 daily commuters.

However, the line had 729,000 passenger trips in 2014, representing an increase of 3.6 percent in passenger trips over 2013, according to Metra.

Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr., who attended the press event in Chicago and boarded the train back to Joliet, thanked Lipinski and the Metra Board of Directors for getting the additional train for Will County commuters.

“Let’s hope it’s only just the beginning and it doesn’t take another [17 years] to get another train to move out of here down to Will County and through the cities en route,” Walsh Sr. said.

JOLIET – The next “Men Who Cook” event will take place in April at the Pipefitters Training Center in Mokena.

The event invites guests to mingle and eat home-cooked dishes created by local amateur chefs and also support the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center in its mission to investigate child sexual abuse cases.

“It’s conversation and camaraderie and food tasting. … You’ll strike up conversation with people all over the county the way you wouldn’t at any other fundraiser,” Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said of the event.

In 1995, Glasgow established the advocacy center, which is a nonprofit that relies on grants, foundations and fundraisers such as “Men Who Cook.”

The center’s work has resulted in the successful prosecution of thousands of predators, according to the state’s attorney’s office.

Coalition announces housing expo to help Joliet homebuyers

JOLIET – The city of Joliet – in partnership with the Three Rivers Association of REALTORS, the Will County Center for Community Concerns, Standard Bank and First Midwest Bank – has organized a housing expo to give prospective homeowners the resources they need to ease into the homebuying process.

The city of Joliet Housing Expo will be from 9 a.m. to noon April 9 at Joliet West High School, 401 N. Larkin Ave. Representatives from realty offices, banks and housing counseling will give presentations and be available to answer any questions.

Prospective buyers can take advantage of the Joliet Down Payment Assistance Program, which is open to low- to moderate-income residents buying a home as long as the property being acquired is located within the Joliet city limits and is occupied by the homebuyer as his/her principal residence. The city of Joliet, in cooperation with the Will County Center for Community Concerns, has committed more than $650,000 to fund the program.

His was a life well lived. Mike often remarked that his childhood was idyllic filled with things he loved, such as Boy Scouting. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout, was a Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow and continued working with Scouting in some capacity throughout adulthood. His devotion ultimately resulted in his being awarded the “Silver Beaver,” Scouting’s highest honor. As a Marine during the Vietnam Conflict, he even enjoyed some of his time as a helicopter crew chief throughout two tours of duty and made “forever friends.” He always found the positive in life. While his career and community involvement provided him a great deal of personal satisfaction, he knew it was the people in his life who were what’s truly important. Mike had a way of making people feel like a part of his family resulting in many friends who became family. His life will be celebrated, his love remembered, and his lessons cherished by all.

EVELYN MARIE CLANCY Evelyn Marie Clancy (nee Nickel), age 95, of Joliet, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2016. She was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church of New Lenox. During her life, she was active in gardening and canning, and enjoyed rescuing feral cats.

Evelyn is survived by her husband of more than 74 years, William H. Clancy; her daughter, Jeanette (Mrs. Robert) Arling; and her son, Jim

was raised in southern Illinois and had resided in Joliet most all of his adult life. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a dedicated 30-year employee of Amoco Chemical (BP) who retired in 1994.

The Associated Press LONDON – Peter Maxwell Davies, an experimental, socially radical composer who served as Queen Elizabeth II’s official master of music, has died. He was 81.

Davies’ management company, Intermusica, said he died Monday of leukemia at his home in Scotland’s Orkney islands.

One of Britain’s best-known modern composers, Davies – Max to his friends – created around 300 works including concertos, 10 symphonies, the operas “Taverner” and “The Lighthouse,” and music-theater piece “Eight Songs for a Mad King,” about the current queen’s troubled ancestor, George III. His work could be bold and challenging or quietly lyrical. A strong environmentalist, Davies drew inspiration from the rugged, wind-swept Orkneys, where he lived for four decades – including several years in a cottage without electricity.

The composition “An Orkney Wedding, With Sunrise” became one of his most popular works, and in 1977 he founded Orkney’s St. Magnus Festival, an annual arts event where many of his works were given their premieres.

He wove social and political themes into compositions including his 9th Symphony, which Davies said contained a military-style section reflecting his opposition to the “disastrous” invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan.

His 2011 opera “Kommilitonen!” was about student activism around the world.

Among his final works is children’s opera “The Hogboon,” which is due to have its world premiere in June under Simon Rattle and the London Symphony Orchestra.

Born in Manchester, northwest England, in 1934, Davies trained at Royal Manchester College of Music before further study in Italy and at Princeton University.

LOS ANGELES – Lloyd S. Shapley, a researcher of strategic decision-making called “game theory” who shared the 2012 Nobel Prize in economics, has died at 92.

The RAND Corp., where Shapley worked as a research mathematician for decades, said he died Saturday in Tucson, Arizona. His health had declined after breaking a hip several weeks ago.

Shapley was 89 and professor emeritus at the University of California, Los Angeles, when he received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his work a half-century earlier that analyzed match-making in markets. Shapley shared the prize with Alvin Roth, who teaches economics at Harvard and Stanford.

Shapley came up with formulas to match supply and demand in markets where prices don’t do the job; Roth put Shapley’s math to work in the real world.

Shapley and Roth studied the match-making that takes place when doctors are coupled with hospitals, students with schools, and human organs with transplant recipients.

Their work sparked a “flourishing field of research” and helped improve the performance of many markets, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said.

“I consider myself a mathematician, and the award is for economics,” Shapley told The Associated Press after learning of the honor. “I never, never in my life took a course in economics.”

The son of renowned astronomer Harlow Shapley, who helped estimate the size of the Milky Way galaxy, Shapley noted: “Now, I’m ahead of my father. He got other prizes. ... But he did not get a Nobel Prize.”

Shapley’s work remains the subject of discussion in academic circles, according to RAND. A conference was convened in 2013 in Istanbul to discuss the “Shapley Value,” a concept he developed in 1953 that provides a method for uniquely valuing the contribution of each individual to a group where the value of the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Shapley was studying in his hometown at Harvard when he was drafted into the military in 1943. While in the Army Air Forces in China, Shapley received the Bronze Star for breaking a Soviet weather code.

Spending plan outlines $180M repair backlog at fairgrounds

SPRINGFIELD – A spending plan from Gov. Bruce Rauner outlines a $180 million backlog in repairs and maintenance for the state fairgrounds in Springfield and Du Quoin.

If the backlog is allowed to go on, it will make it more difficult for the facilities to compete to host major events, according to the governor’s plan, which was outlined last month.

More than a dozen roofs at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield are in need of repair or replacement, the State Journal-Register reported. The fairgrounds also needs an update to its above-ground electrical system and repairs on roads covered with potholes.

The Du Quoin fairgrounds need grandstand repairs, roof replacements, a fire-alarm system and life-safety improvements.

Illinois lawmakers haven’t yet agreed on a way to pay for the work.

“We have to come up with a new capital plan. I don’t know what form that’s going to take yet. I haven’t seen any real proposals,” state Rep. Tim Butler said last week during a tour of the Springfield fairgrounds with representatives of the Illinois Department of Agriculture.

Arrested father of slain 9-year-old boy denied bail

CHICAGO – The father of a 9-year-old Chicago boy who was shot and killed in November has been denied bail after being charged with shooting three people.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported 25-year-old Pierre Stokes was ordered held with no bail Monday. He’s charged with three counts of aggravated battery with a firearm and one count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

Stokes is accused in a shooting that occurred March 8, the day authorities announced charges against 22-yearold Dwright Boone-Doty in the Nov. 2 killing of Stokes’ son, Tyshawn Lee. Boone-Doty allegedly lured the boy into an alley and shot him in the head.

The fourth-grader’s death shocked the city because, according to police, he was killed because of his father’s gang affiliation.

Presidential hopefuls make campaign stops in Illinois

CHICAGO – Presidential hopefuls were wearing a path through Illinois on Monday, as the typically predictable state suddenly has become ground for some possible political upsets in key primary races.

Democratic former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders both are working to appeal to minority voters and union members in the labor-friendly state, as Clinton hopes to win the state where she was born. Sanders was hoping for a surprise on Tuesday like last week when he defeated Clinton in Michigan.

On the Republican side, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz had a full day of stops planned across Illinois as he tries to best billionaire Donald Trump, who canceled a rally Friday in Chicago, citing security concerns after thousands of people showed up to protest.

More than 1,000 delegates in both parties are at stake Tuesday when Florida, Illinois, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio vote.

The highest-stakes contests are in Florida and Ohio, where the winnertake-all Republican primaries award 99 and 66 delegates respectively and are must-wins for Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

Illinois offers an opportunity for several candidates to pick up delegates and to show they can win in one of the country’s largest populated states.

Republicans award 69 delegates, with the winner of a statewide presidential preference poll guaranteed at least 15. Voters choose the remainder by electing delegates in each congressional district who are affiliated with a candidate.

Democrats award 182 delegates, with 102 of those awarded based on the proportion of the vote a candidate receives Tuesday in each congressional district, provided they get a minimum of 15 percent. Many of the remaining delegates are pledged to a candidate independently of Tuesday’s results, and those delegates – which include party leaders and elected officials – heavily favor Clinton.

But aides to Clinton’s campaign said the race has gotten closer in recent days in Illinois, Ohio and Missouri.

Sanders also has used speeches and TV ads to link Clinton to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who has seen his support among black voters slip since closing schools in primarily minority neighborhoods and since the city released video of a white police officer shooting a black teen 16 times.

Emanuel has endorsed Clinton.

“Based on his disastrous record as mayor of the city of Chicago, I do not want Mayor Emanuel’s endorsement if I win the nomination,” Sanders said Saturday.

Cruz, who’s running second in the delegate count behind Trump, announced Sunday that he would be making stops Monday in Rockford, Glen Ellyn, Peoria, Decatur and Springfield.

He argues he’s best positioned to stop Trump from getting the 1,237 delegates needed for the nomination.

At his Rockford event, Cruz told journalists that Trump can’t be trusted because he donated to Democrats, such as former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich – who’s now in prison for corruption – and Emanuel.

Cruz said that if voters are interested in “abuse of power from Chicago Democrats, then Donald Trump is a great candidate.”

Trump held a rally Sunday in Bloomington, and Kasich campaigned in the Chicago suburbs last week.

Illinois voters on Tuesday also will choose nominees to face off for the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk and a series of congressional and legislative primaries, among others.

Trump, Sanders deflate super PACs in 2016 race

MIAMI – Four years ago in Florida, a super PAC pummeled Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich with $10 million in attack ads, clearing him out of the race to the benefit of eventual nominee Mitt Romney.

Once again, attack ads are raining down in the Sunshine State, this time about $18 million worth against Donald Trump, as outside groups try to edge the front-runner off the path to the nomination.

But like so many other aspects of 2016, super PACs aren’t working out as planned.

Outside groups so far have spent about $300 million on the presidential race, an Associated Press analysis found. For all of that money, Trump, who has dismissed super PACs as a “crooked business,” is leading the Republican field.

And on the Democratic side, Bernie Sanders deflects the big-money spending of front-runner Hillary Clinton’s allies by using their mere presence as a fundraising opportunity. That could help explain why Priorities USA, a super PAC backing Clinton, has spent just $6 million of its $50 million.

“People are kind of on to them,” Ben Carson, who recently dropped out of the Republican presidential race and now backs Trump, said of outside groups. “There’s so much at stake that

people don’t have a lot of time to pay attention to silly ads, and that’s essentially what these super PACs do. They haven’t found anything useful to do.”

For the early voting states, well-funded advertising campaigns to take down Trump didn’t exist. That changed with Florida: The airwaves here are awash in Trump-bashing ads.

One of the hardest-hitting spots calls the billionaire businessman “offensive, out of control,” as it plays bleeped-out clips of him using harsh language. Another tells Republican voters that Trump is “very liberal” and is “playing us for chumps.”

Still more ads ridicule Trump’s for-profit university, his real estate company’s use of foreign workers and his delay in condemning the endorsement of a former Ku Klux Klan leader.

Like so many arguments against Trump’s candidacy, the messages don’t seem to resonate.

Recent polls show Trump well ahead of home-state senator Marco Rubio in Florida, one of five states holding presidential primaries on Tuesday. Indeed, the group spending the most to take out Trump in Florida is Rubio’s super PAC, Conservative Solutions.

Across the country, Rubio has benefited from $64 million in spending by Conservative Solutions and a companion nonprofit that doesn’t disclose its donors. He’s won just three of 27 primary contests.

Why you should vote

By now, you probably are a tad tired of us telling you how important it is to vote in today’s election.

We don’t apologize for the repetition of the message. It is important for Americans to learn about the candidates and cast a ballot.

As a bit of a reprieve, however, we thought we’d step aside and let others tell you why you should get to know the candidates and vote: “Bad officials are elected by good citizens who do not vote,” drama critic and editor George Jean Nathan said.

“If you have been voting for politicians who promise to give you goodies at someone else’s expense, then you have no right to complain when they take your money and give it to someone else, including themselves,” economist Thomas Sowell said.

“The ballot is stronger than the bullet,” President Abraham Lincoln said.

“The ignorance of one voter in a democracy impairs the security of all,” President John F. Kennedy said.

“Those who stay away from the election think that one vote will do no good: ’Tis but one step more to think one vote will do no harm,” essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson said.

“The vote is the most powerful instrument ever devised by man for breaking down injustice and destroying the terrible walls which imprison men because they are different from other men,” President Lyndon B. Johnson said.

“To make democracy work, we must be a nation of participants, not simply observers. One who does not vote has no right to complain,” author Louis L’Amour said.

“Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education,” President Franklin D. Roosevelt said.

Said President Emeritus of the University of Notre Dame Theodore Hesburgh: “Voting is a civic sacrament.”

Madigan, Rauner have similar campaign playbooks

Illinois Republicans have long complained that House Speaker Michael Madigan’s campaign organization doesn’t just beat you, it destroys you. Madigan doesn’t always set out to merely win, he wants to make sure he doesn’t ever have to deal with you again.

Madigan’s own Democratic primary race has been a good example. He posted yard signs all over his district urging his constituents to vote against “convicted felon Jason Gonzales,” and his cable TV and direct mail ceaselessly pounded home that very same message. His captains also reportedly had volunteers holding those signs at the entrance to voting locations.

Gonzales is, indeed, a convicted felon. But that happened two decades ago, and he was pardoned by former Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn. To hear the Madigan campaign tell it, however, you’d think the guy just walked out of prison.

Or, take a look at what Madigan did to Katelyn Hotle. The House speaker’s operation dropped at least nine negative mailers on the little-known, lightly funded candidate in the Democratic primary to replace retiring state Rep. Pat Verschoore, D-Milan. The gist of the attacks was that Hotle, a local alderman, profited personally from her shoddy government service, but none of it was true.

They also smeared Hotle in the media for being a “plant” of Gov. Bruce Rauner’s. Why? The only real explanation is that she was the lone female in a four-way primary, so she could do well on demographics alone and they had to take her out. For good.

The Madigan operation reached way back into the past of Rep. Ken Dunkin, D-Chicago, to find an arrest, some formal allegations of domestic

Rich Miller abuse and troubles paying his child support, and then used that against him in his Democratic primary campaign. Dunkin started the fight by so closely allying himself with our Republican governor and thumbing his nose at his fellow Democrats, but he seems to have personally rehabilitated himself. Madigan and the people around him didn’t care. It’s a matter of public record and Dunkin got whacked with it.

But as we’ve also discovered this year, Rauner’s legislative campaign operation is eerily similar to Madigan’s. And while that’s making some Republicans privately uncomfortable, Madigan’s way has proven to work far more often than not over the years.

A good case in point is conservative activist Dan Proft’s TV ads in the 102nd House District GOP primary against Jim Acklin.

Proft’s Liberty Principles PAC ran a blistering TV ad that claimed Acklin, as a school superintendent, “blamed the victim” and “did nothing” about a sexual predator in his school system who also happened to be a “family friend.” The ad was based on a failed civil lawsuit – a very thin reed, indeed – but it was brutal.

Rauner and his pals have pumped seven-figure contributions into Proft’s PAC over the past few months.

They’ve clearly been involved in several races through Proft.

Rauner and his people do not want Acklin nominated because he is backed by former Republican Gov. Jim Edgar, a frequent Rauner critic.

So, they’re supporting former state Rep. Brad Halbrook, R-Shelbyville, despite the fact that they don’t really love the guy. Keeping Edgar’s fingers out of the House has been their priority.

So, they launched a second killer TV ad to build on their theme. The new spot used Acklin’s own videotaped comments at a candidates’ forum where he claimed to have acted “quickly and decisively” to remove the predator teacher from his school.

But the second Proft ad claimed: “In his own words, it took him four years to act. ... Four years,” while displaying a news clip on the screen about how Acklin said “he was aware of an incident involving [the predator] in 2008.” That “incident” was an allegation that the teacher was texting a student, but the student denied at the time that anything inappropriate was going on. The teacher was warned, and that was the end of it until the predator’s arrest four years later. “Acklin touts his judgment. On March 15 make your own,” the ad concludes.

Acklin raised a decent amount of funds compared to similar races in prior years, but times have changed.

Both sides in Dunkin’s race (including Rauner’s allies) dumped well over $5 million into the contest. A Senate Republican primary race in the Springfield area where the governor opposed the incumbent saw spending top $3.5 million.

Acklin wasn’t able to air a response ad until a full week after the initial Proft ad aired, and after he’d already been buried with Rauner’s money.

The Redwings got no closer than 20-15 the rest of the first half, and West led, 30-22, at the break. The closest Benet got in the second half was three points on three occasions, the final time at 51-48 with 1:57 left, as the Tigers went on to win, 59-53.

That is worth recalling as the two prepare for the rematch in Tuesday’s 7:30 p.m. Class 4A DeKalb Supersectional at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center. The first game, in Class 3A, begins at 6 and will

The formula the Tigers (21-9) used to dispose of Oswego, 48-41, Friday night in the Lockport Sectional final was strikingly similar. West took a 9-2 first-quarter lead, led 26-13 at half and, despite a rough third quarter, never trailed.

Perhaps because of their youth, the Tigers sometimes are perceived as a

team that has difficulty holding leads.

That is not the case, however.

“We proved some people wrong with how we played in the fourth quarter,” coach Nick DiForti said after Friday’s game. “We have won seven games in a row. Every time, we have had a lead and the other team comes back at us. They keep coming at us, and yet we have won those seven in a row.”

West also plays defense, another asset the Tigers are not always credited with having. Their length inside can bother opponents, and their guards are quick. One of those guards, junior Jason Bingham, said he was expecting

to play Tuesday after turning an ankle against Oswego.

“Our guards are pretty good on the ball, and I think our length is deceptive,” DiForti said after the Benet game at Pontiac. “We’re the tallest 6-foot-4 team I’ve seen.”

In that game, the Redwings (29-3) connected on 2 of 3 from 3-point range in the first quarter, but only one of the next 18 before making a consolation 3 in the closing seconds. West’s defense was primed to run the Benet shooters off the 3-point line, and the plan worked.

Three Flyers earn All-Midwest honors SUBMITTED REPORTS

ROMEOVILLE – The Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) announced Monday that Lewis University senior forward Mariyah Brawner-Henley has been selected to the 2016 D2CCA Women’s Basketball All-Midwest Region First Team.

Lewis freshman forward Jessica Kelliher was named to the second team. The Flyers were the only school with a member on both the first and second teams.

Brawner-Henley, the 2016 Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year, finished the year 13th in the nation in scoring (20.1 a game) and ninth in rebounds (11.8 a game). She recorded four GLVC Player of the Week honors as she notched 22 double-doubles, tying for the most in the nation. She

finished her career with 1,981 points and 1,282 rebounds. She is the program leader in both categories. Her 72 career double-doubles rank second all-time in NCAA DII history. She advances to All-American consideration.

Kelliher, the 2016 GLVC Freshman of the Year, averaged 18.3 points a game. Her scoring average ranked 38th in the nation and first among all freshmen in NCAA DII. She shot 60.2 percent from the floor, fifth best in the nation. She recorded double-digits in all but one game this season and earned two GLVC Player of the Week honors.

They also announced that Lewis sophomore forward Max Strus has been selected to the 2016 D2CCA All-Midwest Region First Team. He is now eligible for All-America accolades.

Strus led the Flyers men’s team

in scoring (20.2 ppg), rebounding (8.4 ppg.) and assists (3.5 apg.) in 2015-16 as they won their first Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament title in 14 years. Strus, who was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player, averaged 18.5 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists-per-game in four Lewis wins during the GLVC Tournament.

Strus, a 2016 All-GLVC First Team selection, broke Lewis’ single-season scoring record with 666 points and recorded his 1,000th career point in just his second season. He also broke the Lewis single-season record for free throws made with 167.

Strus finished the 2015-16 season ranked in Lewis’ Top Ten in several different single-season categories, including rebounds (278; third), scoring average (20.2 ppg.; fifth), field goals made (216; seventh) and 3-point field

goals made (67; tied for ninth).

He also earned USBWA National Player of the Week honors.

“Usually as a coach you don’t want to play a conference foe or a repeat team,” said DiForti, whose team met Joliet Central for the third time in the sectional semifinal and Oswego for a second time in the sectional final. “But it hasn’t mattered to us because we are on a 1-0 mission every game. We have our mindset right now. We have been in really big games, and it is showing.”

Benet’s other losses were to Marian Catholic in two overtimes in December and to Notre Dame in January. West suffered through a bad spell after Pontiac, but the Tigers appear to have put that experience behind. They are back to being the team that can play with anyone.

“After we lost to Lincoln-Way East (on Feb. 9), we came together,” DiForti said.

“From that point, it has been a maturation process.”

No guarantees, of course, but if West can get off to a quick start as it did against Benet at Pontiac and against Oswego last Friday, the Redwings might have a tough time catching up.

“We have great leaders in the locker room,” junior forward Trevian Bell said last Friday. “We have guys who know what to say and when to say it. I told the guys before the game that we had to come out fast and strong, and we did.”

That does not mean the Tigers are immune from suffering through a scoring drought at any time. They are, after all, kids, with five juniors and two sophomores in the regular rotation.

“I think we tried to rush things in the third quarter a little, and they were a pretty good team,” West junior forward Elijah Ward said.

Perhaps Ward will be the X-factor in the supersectional. In the first Benet game, he finished with 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting while junior guard Teyvion Kirk added 18.

Or, perhaps the X-factor will be Bell, who is about ready to deliver one of his hot-shooting games.

Somehow, this one has a good feel despite Benet’s gaudy record. The Tigers will get it done and will play Friday in Peoria in the state semifinals. In that case, they will have become the first District 204 team to place in the top four at state since the combined program accomplished the feat in 1995. Joliet combined-program teams lost in the quarterfinals in 1998 and in supersectionals in 2002 and 2010.

Porters looking to get better every day

Shaw Media Correspondent LOCKPORT – When it comes to Lockport baseball, the tradition is there, yet the message for this season is the same under sixth-year coach Andy Satunas.

“Our goals are simple, get better every day and be better at the end of the season from where we started,” Satunas said.

The Porters have won or tied for the SouthWest Suburban Blue title each year under Satunas.

“We don’t talk about winning conference as a goal, that is part of the vision, it’s a measuring stick to see if we are growing as a baseball team,” he said.

“I’m excited with this group of players. We have a solid core of seniors that is going to be pushed by a very talented group of juniors. With this competition occurring every day, it really fits into becoming better every day and winning the day, whether you are practicing or playing a game.”

“We are taking this season day by day,” Hill said. “We are excited as a team and we have a real good distribution between seniors and juniors.

The shortstop position will be held by senior Jake Huber, who takes over for three-year starter Tyler Hair, who graduated.

“We are focused on winning baseball games,” Huber said. “No position is safe on this team, because we battle every day in practice to get better. I want to become a better person, baseball player and teammate as the season progresses.”

Lovesky is the only underclassman in the infield, but he has experience.

“I want to become a more polished player in every asset of the game,” he said. “I will do whatever it takes to win – hit to the right side, bunt, hit for average instead of power. We are treating this season with a playoff attitude. Every time we step on the field you want to have that type of attitude, no matter if it’s the first game or in the middle of the season and that will translate into success.”

The pitching staff will be led by senior Michael Stevens. Two junior football standouts will add depth to the staff.

Starting quarterback Ben Davis will be part of the varsity this season.

He pitched last year on the sophomore

team but didn’t play summer baseball as he was preparing for the football season. Josh Baker also will add much-needed depth on the mound.

The Porters lost regulars at all three positions in the outfield from last year, but they have some experience in junior Nick Strysik and had last summer to get the new players adjusted to the varsity level.

The Porters’ schedule is loaded with good competition, as usual. Lockport will be playing in the WJOL/Don Ladas Memorial Tournament, the PBR Super Prep in Louisville, make its annual trip to Edwardsville and end the regular season with the Steven Bajenski tournament.

“Our schedule is very competitive and adding the Bajenski tournament is a plus,” Satunas said. “Some of the best teams in the state play in that tournament. It comes at the end of the season to get you ready for the state run and it’s an honor to participate this season.

“Everyone on this team is expected to be a leader. From the catchers to the pitching staff and our middle infielders, it will be their job to get the ship going in the right direction.”

Jarosz, Dunham, Garner give Tigers a ‘Big 3’

Shaw Media Correspondent PLAINFIELD – The Class 4A Standard Bank Stadium Supersectional was June 8.

Plainfield North senior Jason Pacanowski sent the huge Tigers’ contingent into a frenzy after his blast inside the right-field foul pole tied the score at 5 in the bottom of the seventh. Trailing Mount Carmel, 5-1, the Tigers had rallied to send the classic supersectional into extra innings. The eventual Class 4A state runner-up Caravan scored a run in the top of the eighth and hung on to win, 6-5, thus ending the Tigers’ greatest season ever.

A fourth 30-win season. A fourth consecutive Southwest Prairie Conference title. The first sectional championship in school history. All of that was accomplished by the Tigers last year.

Pacanowski and several other key elements have moved on, but a solid core returns, led by three-year varsity starters Zach Jarosz, Josh Garner and Jake Dunham. The message for this season is to go one step further and play June 10 at Silver Cross Field.

The Tigers will be led by shortstop Jarosz (South Dakota State), catcher Dunham (Northern Illinois) and pitcher Garner (St. Louis).

In the fall, Jarosz was an all-area receiver. Before going down to a wrist injury late in the season, he was basketball coach Bob Krahulik’s point guard.

“The wrist is coming along well,”

Jarosz said. “I have started physical therapy and will be back in the lineup in a couple of weeks. We should be very good again this season. We return a number of quality players.”

Pitchers who accounted for 19 of the 30 North victories return on the mound from last year, led by senior Tyler Garrity with seven. A bonus is the addition of Arizona State-bound right-hander Brady Corrigan, who did not pitch for North last spring. Garner won five games, while Southern Illinois-bound Justin Yeager won four and senior Steve Heckman three.

Dunham and Garner, will provide offensive leadership until the hard-hitting Jarosz returns.

Darlington is expecting big things offensively from junior third baseman Alex Steinbach.

“Alex Steinbach can really hit a baseball and we are looking for offensive production from the junior,” Darlington added. “(Illinois State-bound) Connor Peplow, second baseman Anthony Agne and senior center fielder Brandon Knox should help provide us with a powerful lineup, to go with our outstanding pitchers.”

Over the past eight years, Plainfield

North and Minooka have shared or won outright the conference title. This year will be no different as the Indians and Tigers both appear loaded.

The Southwest Prairie schedule-makers have matched the two powers early on. They will play their threegame series April 5 through 7, with two of the games at North.

“We are shooting for our fifth consecutive SPC championship this year,” Dunham said. “Minooka is always good and I am looking forward to facing the quality arms Plainfield South will throw at us.”

Garner said, “We should be very good again this year. We hope to win the Southwest Prairie again. We return a number of great players from last season. It should be fun.”

After opening against Morris on Friday, the Tigers will head to southern Illinois for the annual spring trip.

Awaiting the Tigers will be Jacobs in the Miner Classic at Rent One Park at noon March 28. A side trip to Harrisburg and a date with the Class 2A powerhouse Bulldogs in scheduled at 4 March 29. On March 30, Cary-Grove will await at Abe Martin Field on the campus of SIU in Carbondale.

TORONTO – Reserve Doug McDermott scored 29 points to lead the Bulls to their ninth straight victory over the Toronto Raptors, 109-107, on Monday night.

E’Twaun Moore and Nikola Mirotic added 17 points apiece as the Bulls swept Toronto in the series for the second straight season, handing the Raptors just their second loss in their past 16 games at home. Toronto’s last win against the Bulls was on Dec. 31, 2013.

Jimmy Butler scored 13 points on 5-of-18 shooting after missing three games because of knee soreness.

Kyle Lowry had 33 points and 11 rebounds for Toronto, which also got 27 points from DeMar DeRozan.

McDermott nearly matched the season-best 30 points he scored against the Raptors in a 116-106 win last month in Chicago. The second-year forward hasn’t scored more than 20 points in any other game this season.

Panarin bonuses could be bad for Hawks

mlazerus@suntimes.com Here’s an English phrase that Artemi Panarin understands: “Two and a half million dollars.”

Panarin professed ignorance Monday when asked about the performance bonuses that are within his reach – bonuses that could have a devastating impact on the Blackhawks’ salary-cap situation next season. But when posing a question about the potential financial windfall to his interpreter, Panarin’s eyes bulged wide after hearing that number.

“Honestly, the first time I looked at the contract, I saw that bonus, and then I forgot about it,” Panarin said through the interpreter. “I don’t even think about it. At the end of the season, I’ll look at it again.”

According to Panarin’s agent, Tom

Lynn, Panarin took a little less salary – $812,500 rather than the entry-level maximum of $925,000 – to sign with the Hawks over his other suitors partly because he knew he’d have a better chance to hit his performance bonuses with the talent-rich Hawks. And sure enough, he’s getting there.

With 25 goals and 37 assists in just 67 games, Panarin’s basically a lock to hit his “Schedule A” bonuses, which are worth $850,000. If he manages to finish in the Top 10 in the league among forwards in just one of the following categories – goals, assists, points, points a game – or win the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP or be named a postseason NHL All-Star, it’ll trigger his “Schedule B” bonus, which is worth a hefty $1.725 million.

TORONTO – Fred Hoiberg reminded the media Monday that groin injuries are “tricky things.”

Maybe that’s why Derrick Rose has continued pulling off the vanishing act with such ease.

Despite participating in some of the morning shootaround, Rose was ruled out of the game with the Raptors, as the strained groin continued to be a problem for the point guard.

“He did a little bit [Monday], he still wasn’t moving great,” Hoiberg said. “He’s got trouble with any type of movement with the groin as far as defenDerrick Rose sive slides. Also any type of explosive movement he still feels something in there, so made a decision to sit him out [Monday].”

It was the second consecutive game Rose missed with the injury, after he suffered the latest setback in the Thursday loss in San Antonio.

The Bulls were scheduled to practice Tuesday in Washington D.C., but Hoiberg was still uncertain what he would get from Rose heading into the Wednesday game against the Wizards.

kfishbain@chicagofootball.com The Bears went 6-10 last season, but there’s a belief from general manager Ryan Pace and coach John Fox that things at Halas Hall are going in the right direction, which led to another key front-seven player signing Sunday evening – defensive lineman Akiem Hicks.

“Opportunity was the biggest thing that I wanted to have in the organization I chose to be with. I wanted to have the opportunity to play and play a lot, and be a part of a team that has a legitimate chance to win,” Hicks said Monday on a conference call.

A 6-foot-5, 324-pounder who went to Regina (Canada), Hicks visited Chicago late Friday and the two sides came to an agreement Sunday evening. The two-year deal reportedly is worth $10 million with $5.5 million guaranteed.

Last season, Hicks started the first three games of the season for Akiem Hicks the Saints before being traded to the Patriots, where he had 21 tackles and three sacks. The Saints selected Hicks in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Pace and Bears director of player personnel Josh Lucas were with the Saints’ scouting department for that draft, so there is plenty of familiarity.

“I would say it was a great benefit having a relationship beforehand,” Hicks said. “Definitely one of the reasons that I considered making the visit to Chicago, and really one of the final reasons that I made my decision to become a Chicago Bear.”

Hicks has played in 46 career games and four postseason contests. He has 140 tackles, 9.5 sacks, 22 tackles for loss, 23 quarterback hits, one pass defensed and one forced fumble.

The 26-year-old is the third player the Bears have signed for the front seven on defense, joining Danny Trevathan and Jerrell Freeman. He should be a starter on the D-line alongside last

year’s second-round pick Eddie Goldman. The Bears did re-sign Mitch Unrein but do not appear to be bringing back Jarvis Jenkins. Hicks will wear No. 96, Jenkins’ number last season, and he’ll look to be the impact D-lineman for Vic Fangio’s defense.

“When I look at some of the players that [Fangio has] had in the past, I’d definitely say that I’m comfortable to that as far as my leverage and my length and my capability to play multiple positions,” he said. “If anything, I’m pretty excited to see how I will fare in his defense. He’s had a great track record of making successful defensive linemen and successful defenses as a whole. I’m just excited to be under his tutelage and to learn from a great mind in the NFL for a number of years.”

Hicks has a big fan on the other side of the Bears’ line in Kyle Long, who earlier Sunday tweeted, “I’ve played against [Hicks] twice and I don’t want to play against him again...” and after the signing, tweeted, “I know our linebackers are jumping for joy. We just signed colossus.”

Long’s tweets certainly helped excite Hicks about joining the Pro Bowler in the Bears’ trenches.

“We had a little bit of banter. It’s not our first time going after it. There have been several times on the field over the past four years of being in the NFL that me and Kyle Long have locked horns,” he said. “It was a pleasure for him to want me to be a Chicago Bear. I’m excited and I’m sure we’re going to have a bunch of fun coming into training camp.”

Echoing Jerrell Freeman, who signed Saturday, Hicks has confidence in the Bears’ chances this season.

“They have been and are still currently making great decisions in order to bring players and the coaching staff and everybody to this organization to build something great here in Chicago,” he said. “I’m a believer. I’ve seen some of the moves that they’ve made and I’ve seen the way that they’ve gone about business and I’m excited to be a part of that, and was excited from afar.”

A LONELY, LOVING ROLE

As people live longer, more seniors become caregivers

She wants to stay at home. We don’t want her to be away from us.

That’s why Lyle Wiggins, 96, is the primary caregiver for his wife, Lavon Wiggins, 94, who was diagnosed a decade ago with Parkinson’s disease.

Lyle Wiggins of Joliet said he does have adult children who help at night and when they can. But generally, Lyle cares for Lavon by himself during the day. This includes lifting Lavon in and out of bed and her wheelchair, and taking her to the bathroom, as well as driving to the grocery store (“My driver’s license is good until 2017,” Lyle said) and doctor’s appointments.

Lyle, a World War II veteran, doesn’t mind playing hero on the homefront to the woman he married 74 years ago. He recalled Lavon as the beautiful brunette in his typing class at a Minnesota business college and said he is happy to care for her needs.

“She’s been very patient to put up with me all these years,” Lyle said.

“She’s very kind and loving and doesn’t get upset with me very often, so I try to please her. We get along very well.”

GIVING CARE About 30 percent of the caregivers in the support group Kathy Miller leads at Easter Seals Joliet Region are older than 70. Tom Johnsrud, executive director of Senior Star at Weber Place, said the average age at the facility’s support groups is 85.

“We have one couple that is going to be celebrating their 76th wedding anniversary,” Johnsrud said.

People are living longer and healthier lives, Miller said, which increases the odds that spouses will become caregivers. Despite the availability of various resources – such as home health aides and assisted living – overseeing complete care of an elderly person is never easy. That process becomes complicated when the caregiver – who might be a spouse, sibling or even an adult child – also is older and has health concerns, and when the person requiring care has cognitive impairment or dementia, Miller said.

“If you don’t have anybody with you in the house when you’re giving care to someone with a memory problem, it gets very lonesome, so I’m very blessed that I do have help [from family],” said Richard Sievers, 83, of Minooka, who

But constantly monitoring a person with dementia is stressful, even with help. Although Richard’s wife, Helen Sievers, 82, can no longer perform household chores, she still thinks she can, he said.

On occasions, Helen puts dirty clothes in the dryer or tries to make tea by heating an electric kettle on an electric stove. Worse is the loss of Richard’s lifelong companion.

“If I want to reminisce about something in the past, she has no idea about what I’m talking about,” Richard said. “If I show her a picture of the grandchildren, she can’t name them anymore and she’s not even sure they’re grandchildren. There’s just no meaningful connection.”

Other meaningful connection might also disappear. Johnsrud said caregivers might become so focused on “their job” they stop participating in social activities. The isolation might intensify if their children don’t live in the area, he said.

Ed Vascik, 87, of Plainfield, said he cared for his wife, Mary Vascik, 85, at home until keeping continual watch on her became impossible and she went to live at a memory care unit close to his home.

But such a move doesn’t eliminate doubt (“You wonder if you’re making the right decision”), separation (“People don’t understand how much this affects the caregiver”), one’s own shortcomings (“I don’t have the energy I had when I was younger”) and grieving the loss of a cherished spouse while she is still alive, even though Ed visits Mary nearly every day.

“I try to keep busy during the day,” Ed said, “but evenings are a killer.”

Louise Price, 74, of Romeoville, said she kept her husband, Jerry Price, who died in December, at home until October. For the past several years, Louise was Jerry’s full-time caregiver, until his Parkinson’s disease severely restricted movement of his hands and feet and repeatedly caused him to fall.

“I had to call 911 many times to get

him off the floor because I could not pick him up,” Louise said.

Looking back, Louise said she is amazed at her ability to care for Jerry’s needs at home, even when people doubted it was feasible.

“You can do a lot more for someone you love than you think you can when the time comes,” Louise said.

But nonstop caregiving can tax the providers and affect their own immune systems, Miller said. Even if caregivers are resilient and try to stay healthy and strong – Lyle Wiggins said he exercises every day – what happens if they are unable to provide care, even temporarily?

This is especially troublesome for seniors with memory issues, who may lash out at unfamiliar people, Miller said.

“We had one gentlemen with a business trip planned and he had some friends that were going to take care of his wife,” Miller said. “When he came back after a week, they said, ‘We can’t do this again.’ ”

Morris Hospital Fire Starter of Month makes daily difference The HERALD-NEWS MORRIS – Debbie Button of Morris a cardiac sonographer at Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers, was selected as Morris Hospital’s Fire Starter of the Month for February.

As a child, Button said she always wanted to be a nurse. Yet during her senior year of high school when she was enrolled in the Grundy Area Vocational Center, she discovered the respiratory therapy department at Morris Hospital and went on to become a certified respiratory therapist.

She landed her first job at Morris Hospital in 1979, and when the cardiology and respiratory therapy departments eventually merged, Button took

courses and attended seminars that allowed her to pursue certification in echocardiography.

For years, Button worked as both a respiratory therapist and echo tech until she eventually decided to focus solely on cardiac diagnostics. She is most proud of her involvement in the hospital’s new Rhythm of Our Youth heart screening program that will be launched at area high schools next fall.

As Fire Starter of the Month, Button received a Grundy County Chamber of Commerce gift certificate, a Morris Hospital logoed clothing item of her choice, a special “Fire Starter” lapel pin, and a designated parking spot for the month.

Consumer education website launched

ROMEOVILLE – In an effort to empower older adults and their families with valuable information on aging well in a rapidly growing senior housing industry, the American Seniors Housing Association launched a new website devoted solely to navigating the complex components of today’s senior living options.

The site, www.whereyoulivematters.org, is part of a five-year ASHA strategic plan designed to provide seniors, adult children and others with clear, straightforward information related to senior housing.

Joliet JC nursing program graduates surpass averages

JOLIET – For another year in a row, Joliet Junior College nursing graduates surpassed national and state averages among those who take the National Council Licensure Examination. According to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, JJC graduates of the registered nursing program achieved a 96 percent pass rate on the national nursing licensure examination for 2015.

This continues to be well above both state (86 percent) and national (85 percent) averages. Pass rates for the licensed practical nursing program achieved a 99 percent pass rate on the national licensure examination (NCLEX-PN) for 2015.

JJC has the biggest community college-based nursing program in Illinois, and is one of a few that offers an evening program.

Information sessions open to residents of District 525 dates are as follows – March 23 at 4 p.m., U-building auditorium U-1024, Joliet (main) campus; April 6 at 4 p.m., conference room, Romeoville campus; May 4 at 4 p.m., U-building classroom U-2005, Joliet.

• Delirium tremens. This is the most dangerous form of alcohol withdrawal. This condition occurs in about one out of every 20 people who have withdrawal symptoms.

Its peak intensity is usually four to five days after the last drink.

People suffering from delirium tremens are very agitated and have hallucinations. In my experience, they often see animals that aren’t there – domesticated and wild. They have very rapid pulse, rapid breathing, high blood pressure, very high fevers and profuse sweating.

They may get severely dehydrated, and their body minerals can get dangerously out of balance. If untreated, delirium tremens can be fatal.

It sounds as though your husband is planning to quit at home. Before he does, he should consult with his doctor. The doctor might think it is safer if he is in a medical setting. If not, the doctor can give him advice and prescribe medicines to make withdrawal symptoms more tolerable. If your husband experiences severe vomiting, seizures or delirium tremens during withdrawal, let his doctor know – but also get him to a hospital. Dear Dr. K: My husband has a problem with alcohol. He finally has decided to quit, and has set a date for his final drink. How will his body react once he stops? Is there anything we can do to help ease his withdrawal symptoms?

Dear Reader: Alcohol withdrawal refers to the changes the body goes through when a person who has been drinking heavily for a long time suddenly stops.

Alcohol has a slowing effect on the brain. In a heavy, long-term drinker, the brain almost continually is exposed to this depressant effect of alcohol. In response, the brain adjusts its own chemistry to compensate. It does so by producing larger-than-normal amounts of stimulating chemicals.

If a person suddenly stops drinking alcohol, the brain still is bathed in the stimulating chemicals – but no longer has the alcohol to slow it down. It’s like a car with the gas pedal floored that has lost its brakes. Not surprisingly, most withdrawal symptoms occur when the brain is overstimulated.

The symptoms of alcohol withdrawal occur in a predictable pattern after the final drink. Not all people experience all symptoms: • Tremors (shakes). These usually begin within five to 10 hours after the last drink and typically peak at 24 to 48 hours. Along with tremors (trembling), they include a rapid pulse, an increase in blood pressure, rapid breathing, sweating, nausea and vomiting, anxiety or a hyper-alert state, irritability, nightmares or vivid dreams and insomnia.

• Alcohol hallucinosis. This symptom usually begins within 12 to 24 hours after the last drink, and may last as long as two days once it begins. If this happens, a person sees, hears or feels things that are not real.

Against three no-trump, West led the diamond king. Declarer won with dummy’s ace, crossed to his hand with a club, and led a spade. When West nervously inserted her jack, South played low from the dummy.

Now East should have overtaken with his king and returned the diamond nine, which would have held declarer to his contract. Minus 400 would have been a top for EastWest. When East actually played low, West led another club. South won, played a spade to dummy’s ace, and led another spade. West cashed her diamond queen to hold South to 10 tricks. But minus 430 was still a top.

West should have played low on the first spade, because if South had held the king, he would have cashed that honor first.
