Fox River Aqueduct – Ottawa A bit of ingenious engineering is required to construct aqueducts to cross streams, creeks and rivers along the Illinois and Michigan Canal route.

Along the 96-mile trek through the wilderness, the I&M Canal needed a series of 15 locks to navigate the 141-foot elevation change from Chicago to the Illinois River. The canal route also needed four aqueducts to carry the canal across other bodies of water.

Canal engineers had to design and construct four aqueducts to carry the canal over rivers and creeks. The four principal aqueducts built were over Aux Sable and Nettle Creeks and the Fox and Little Vermilion Rivers.

The largest of the aqueducts constructed was built over the Fox River in Ottawa by the local construction firm of David Sanger & Sons. The original Fox River aqueduct in Ottawa was constructed in a similar fashion to other aqueducts along the canal.

The 1848 version was built of six, timber Howe truss spans resting on seven limestone piers and two abutments. When completed, the aqueduct measured 464 feet in length.

The wooden towpath bridge, which ran along the south side of the structure, fell into disrepair after 1870 when mule teams were no longer necessary. The Illinois Traction System extended the piers from the old timber towpath and created a railroad crossing over the river in 1903.

In 1918, the federal government provided funds to improve western sections of the canal, and the four aqueducts were replaced with steel.

NOMINATIONS UNSETTLED Outsider candidates attracting new voters in Will County

bokon@shawmedia.com The Illinois primary election is attracting more attention than usual thanks to both party presidential nominations still being a live issue and so-called outsider candidates drawing new voters to the polls.

In Will County, early voting as of Wednesday totaled 7,328. With the election coming Tuesday, early voting already was far ahead of the 4,823 early votes cast in the 2012 primary when President Barack Obama’s renomination was assured and there was not much doubt Mitt Romney would get the Republican bid.

Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots said renewed interest can be expected when the sitting president is not running for re-election.

“Anytime you have an incumbent that’s leaving office, that opens the door for people on both sides of the aisle,” Voots said.

Donald Trump; U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont; and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, all carry outsider credentials of some sort that promise to bring more voters to the polls – some who otherwise would not vote in a party primary.

Even the considered establishment candidate in the Democratic primary, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, is likely to attract new interest from female voters, since she would be the first woman president if elected.

New voters

“I have two family members who have never voted in a primary election. They both voted for Bernie Sand-

ers,” said Jacqueline Traynere, a Will County Board member from Bolingbrook who also is on the ballot as a Sanders delegate.

Traynere said her two relatives were not voting out of family loyalty and did not know she was a Sanders delegate. Both in their 60s, they found new motivation to vote this year despite a lifetime of avoiding party primary elections.

“They never wanted to be identified with a political party,” Traynere said.

But that was the past, and this year is different.

“I’m surprised how many people who have never voted in a Republican primary have pulled absentee ballots,” Will County Republican Party

Chairman Edward Ronkowski said last week. “Less than 20 percent of the absentee ballots I sampled were hardcore Republican votes.”

Typically, Ronkowski said, about half the names he sees showing up in requests for absentee ballots are familiar Republican voters.

And, early voting is heavy. Requests for Republican ballots as of Friday morning is more than double the numbers in the 2012 primary, Ronkowski said.

The Trump factor

The obvious answer for that bump in new Republican ballots would be Donald Trump, who is widely seen as bringing new people to the polls.

Ronkowski disagreed, saying Republican primary voters are motivated to undo actions taken during eight years of an Obama administration.

But he does acknowledge a Trump factor drawing in nontraditional Republican primary voters.

This is what Emily Collins of Minooka, who is studying political science, posted to her Facebook wall at 7:55 p.m. Friday as she was trying to get herself, her sister Maddie, a friend, and her cousin Kellen Walker safely out of the parking garage at the UIC pavilion where Donald Trump’s rally was postponed.

Collins thought it would be a good educational experience to attend a rally, despite not supporting the Republican front-runner. She wanted to experience the political event firsthand, rather than filtered through what she feels is a biased media stream.

“I’m not a Trump supporter. Part of the reason I wanted to go was to see what happens at a political rally, how much of what we see is just the media showing the negative,” Emily Collins said Saturday. “We thought it would be better to have an adult with us, so we asked Kellen to go with.”

Mayhem broke loose in the pavilion

after it was announced Trump was postponing the event. The small Minooka area group stood where they were seated and watched from a safe distance.

“I’m glad I went. My parents told me to be neutral, not to upset either side.

We just stayed where we were because we weren’t sure if it was safe to exit or not,” Collins said. “We felt safer in the area because at least there was security.”

She said while she has seen fights on TV she wasn’t prepared for the firsthand experience. Security told the group they needed to exit, and they were grateful to do so through a press-only door that led to the parking garage, avoiding the protesters gathering outside. They wound up stuck in their car for about an hour as they waited for police to clear the way to exit.

“We were on the third floor of the parking garage. There were guys with a bat, a tire iron and a hammer. One of them had a skull bandana covering his face up to his eyes,” she said. “We sat there with our windows up and my sister was on the floor of the car with an emergency blanket over herself talking to our mom on the phone.”

Donald Trump rally attendee politics, and was intrigued to attend a rally.

“I went to listen. I am not a Trump supporter,” he said. “I wanted to watch the political system at work. I wanted to see how passionate people were.”

He wasn’t prepared for the passion he witnessed though.

“At one point I had a tear rolling down my cheek, and I thought, this is the black and white photographs from my history books,” he said.

He said he saw America hasn’t advanced as much since the Civil Rights era as he thought.

Before leaving Minooka, Walker had sent a text to the girls: “Take it all in so you can learn and bring what you learn back to the people around you. This is as close as your going to get to seeing

what we read in the history books live in action.”

Lesson learned

Both Collins and Walker said they believed what they’ve seen regarding coverage of Friday night’s events have been largely lies and skewed numbers.

Walker said he watched Trump speak Saturday about to 25,000 people in Chicago supporting him.

“The place only holds 10,000 people. It wasn’t full, and the people there were about 60 percent protesters, and 40 percent Trump supporters,” he said.

“He also lied about emails being sent to those who got tickets from his site to stay home. We didn’t get an email.”

Collins said with only 80 percent of the arena filled, there were no supporters waiting to get inside.

“The news reports I’ve seen never show the first guy shoving the protesters, it only shows the second guy throwing the punch. It never told the whole story, it didn’t show the whole floor,” Walker said.

He said if it did, people would see that once the protesters broke out in cheers of joy, the Trump supporters moved toward them and started the fights.

“There is an identifiable percentage of people who are new to the Republican primary who want to vote for Trump.

And, there is an identifiable percentage of people in the Republican primary who want to vote against Trump,” Ronkowski said. “That probably accounts for most of the new voters.”

Ronkowski noted Cruz, too, is seen as an outsider candidate, and the Republican race is boiling down to a contest between the two of them.

Cruz delegate Stephen Balich, also a Will County Board member from Homer Glen, said the anti-establishment mood was evident when he went doorto-door campaigning for a referendum he has put on the Homer Glen ballot to limit taxing powers.

“When you start talking with people, it did not matter whether they were Democrats or Republicans,” Balich said. “Democrats and Republicans are all in concert. They’re fed up with what government is doing to them. That’s why Ted Cruz and Donald Trump are on top. Bernie Sanders is no pushover either.”

Chairman Scott Pyles said votes in the primary may not necessarily translate to votes in the general election.

“Donald Trump has not been vetted,” Pyles said, suggesting people may become disenchanted with Trump if he is the nominee and they learn more

about him before November.

Clinton’s record, he said, is wellknown, and that could give her staying power.

But the Illinois primary can prove interesting, especially if it becomes a barometer of the political climate amid

ongoing problems in state government.

“I think there’s a lot of people that are upset because they don’t see government working like it should,” Pyles said. “It will be interesting to see what happens in Illinois. Obviously, government is not working very well here.”

Rain doesn’t stop Hometown Irish Parade

Shaw Media correspondent PLAINFIELD – Hundreds of revelers lined the streets of Plainfield on Sunday dressed in boots and rain coats with umbrellas in hand to celebrate the 14-year tradition of the Plainfield Hometown Irish Parade.

The rain was steady all morning and into the afternoon, but that did not deter the community, young and old alike, although most parade-goers waited until a few minutes before the 1 p.m. start time to come out to the streets.

“I looked at the parade Web site this morning and it said ‘rain or shine’ so I thought if they were here, I would come too,” Donna Croce of Plainfield said.

Croce said she and her family have come to the parade since the beginning because it’s a town parade, she likes to be involved and the kids come for the candy. The parade was presented by James Flanagan, attorney at law.

Parade secretary Cindy Ferchen said there were 79 entries in the parade this year, which is an average number, and once again the Village Preservation Association of Plainfield hosted a

Sheena and Eddie Gigante moved to Plainfield five years ago and have made this parade a tradition.

“We make a day of it. We go out to eat, watch the parade and now that we

have a daughter, we go to the family tent,” Sheena Gigante said. “It’s fun to see everyone excited about the event and watch the different groups in the parade.”

The parade began with the Plainfield and Oswego Fire Departments and American Legion and Color Guard.

Followed were the 2016 Parade Grand Marshal Mike Kelly of Plainfield and 2016 Parade Princess Kaitlyn Robertson of Plainfield, student at Plainfield North High School.

Most of the parade participants had to adjust their floats and clothing for the parade due to the weather, but that did not stop the flow of candy, T-shirts, toys, and snacks handed out. Children had an umbrella in one hand and the other overflowed with candy.

“This is the second Plainfield parade for our daughter Genevieve and she likes to come for the candy,” Eddie Gigante said.

“This event is unique because downtown Plainfield is fun and entertaining on its own, and this event helps showcase Plainfield by the community coming together for a fun family event,” Ferchen said.

Channahon stepping up for Arroyo Trails project VIEWS Kris Stadalsky With the most recent donation from Channahon company Flint Hills Resources for $25,000, the People for Channahon Parks Foundation is getting closer to its financial goal to construct the Arroyo Trails.

Local businesses have stepped up to help the foundation meet its financial needs so the Channahon Park District can move ahead with building this awesome natural outdoor area for the community to use.

Generous donations have come in from Morris Hospital to fund a fitness station; Aux Sable Liquid Products for the amphitheater stage; ExxonMobil for a monument sign; D’Arcy Buick-GMC, Joliet for an information kiosk; Ozinga Materials for a sculpture; The Private Bank for a boardwalk; and David and Susan Landahl for a river otter slide.

Together these donations total more than $450,000 – a great show of community support from local businesses, industry and community.

The foundation also had a successful first Putts and Suds Fore Parks fundraiser in February. With 230 participants and great sponsors, the event raised another $25,000.

Because the 68-acre park off Route 6 just west of the DuPage River contains wetlands, floodplain and floodway areas, there are many hurdles to overcome, as well as studies and needed permits through several state and federal agencies, said foundation President Mike Rittof.

They’ve had to re-route some trails to avoid interfering with wetlands and, because it is a natural area, there will have to be some tree removal and cleanup to put in the amenities to make the park accessible.

The area could potentially be home to the northern long-eared bat, considered a threatened species, so tree removal for the amphitheater or the boardwalk, for instance, will take

place after the bats leave the area in the fall and before they return.

But all the “inconveniences,” if you will, are the reason Arroyo Trails will be so unique once it is complete. The ravine and surrounding area, which dates back more than 10,000 years, will be a place for families and children to really be a part of nature.

The idea is to leave as much of the natural wilderness intact as possible, with some amenities to help people discover nature, including an outdoor amphitheater, a playground, a picnic pavilion with bathrooms and interpretive signs. The rest will be left up to the imagination.

I am personally excited about the development of Arroyo Trails. I love to be outdoors, whether I’m gardening at home, walking my dog or exploring trails in the area. The sights, sounds and smells of nature bring me such a feeling of serenity and peace that I just get lost in my own world.

The project has been moving right along with the design and engineering phases. The capital fundraising campaign – the generous donations from area businesses – is winding down but ongoing. With a couple anticipated larger gifts, the funds could be over the $1 million mark.

The next phase for raising money is the community campaign, Rittof said.

Letters will go out to community members with more information about the park and how people can get involved and donate to the campaign. The goal is to really get construction underway in the spring of 2017, Rittof said.

The next community event at Arroyo Trails will be the annual Discovery Day in September. Everyone will get a true feeling of this unique park formed by Pleistocene glaciers thousands of years ago, which will soon be an educational experience of the best kind – having fun in nature.

Lollipop trees ‘planted’ in memory of those lost to cancer

More cancer centers got on board with the project and four more trees were planted at Lurie Children’s Hospital, including one in memory of 7-yearold Addison Locke, who died in 2013 from a rare liver cancer.

“When we presented the tree in honor of Addison, we just knew that she was an amazing little girl that would never be forgotten,” Bavilacqua said in a news release from Joliet Township High School District 204. “Addison was 7 years old when cancer took her life three years ago. She was a patient at Lurie, and the nurses remembered the sweet angel that she was. There were tears, but there were also smiles. It is all a part of healing process.”

Seven trees have been “planted,” and seven more are on the list, including one in South Carolina, which will be hand-delivered by Coffel and Bavilacqua. A hospital in California also has shown interest.

“Being nationwide is our goal. We want to be in every state,” Bavilacqua said.

While the project is gaining momentum, there’s a lot more work to be done for the organization itself. In order to maintain the trees, they need to be “watered” with lollipops on a regular basis.

Hospitals easily go through 10 bags of lollipops a month, which will cost Handing H.O.P.E. $3,000 per year per tree.

“It’s very exciting, but also scary,” Bavilacqua said. “The need is great, but the financial resources are not there yet.”

Bavilacqua and Coffel are hoping to bring business and corporate sponsors on board to help fund the replacement lollipops.

In the meantime, Handing H.O.P.E. will continue its mission to help ease the suffering of children with cancer.

JOLIET – As time has passed, fewer people mention Addison Locke as often as they once did.

That’s why Steve Locke, athletic director at Joliet Central High School, and his wife, Erin Locke, third-grade teacher at Troy Craughwell Elementary, were thrilled to have their daughter remembered at Lurie Children’s Hospital with a lollipop tree by friends Steve and Stephanie Millsaps.

“We love to talk about her and her process until we are blue in the face,” Steve Locke said. “When people do these nice gestures out of the blue, it make us feel good.”

The lollipop tree is the brainchild of Jen Coffel and Kim Bavilacqua, founders of the new nonprofit organization Handing H.O.P.E. Anyone who has gone through cancer treatments can tell you it literally leaves a bad taste in your mouth. For a child, having the sweet taste of a lollipop to cover the bad taste can make a big difference during a difficult time.

After doing research, Coffel and Bavilacqua found Dr. Johns healthy lollipops, which are made with Xylitol and proven to be a safe sweetener, Coffel said.

“They are really healthy,” she said.

“They are sugar free, soy free, dairy free, everything free.”

The two friends – one from Channahon, the other from Minooka – wanted to do something to help kids battling cancer after their own lives were affected by the disease.

Bavilacqua is a cancer survivor herself. Coffel lost her dad, mom and a best friend to cancer in just two years.

Once they got through their own grief, they founded Handing H.O.P.E. with a mission of helping others through prevention and education, as well as provision and evangelism.

The lollipop tree project was created to help children with cancer and as a way of honoring the memory of those who have died from the disease.

Each tree is “planted” in memory of someone as a way to carry on their legacy. The first lollipop tree was planted in honor of Coffel’s dad at Northwestern Medicine Proton Center in Warrenville.

The job suited Justin because he simply liked people – being around them, talking to them and helping them, Michelle said.

“Once people got past the outside, they saw what a genuine, honest, caring person he was,” Michelle said. “Justin was one of those guys that if you were having a bad day, he would notice it and come up and hug you or say, ‘Hey, it’s going to be all right. It will be better tomorrow.’ He was just a compassionate person. He’d go out of his way to be sure that people around him knew that he cared about them and that he valued

them and their friendship.”

Working at the Plano branch of the Fox Valley YMCA also suited Justin.

Jon Meier, aquatic director, said Justin was already leading the water aerobics classes when Meier started working at the YMCA in 2012.

Justin didn’t have prior teaching experience, but the relationships he’d developed with the other students made him a natural for the position when it opened, Meier said. Justin also worked at the front desk and in the welcome center, Meier added.

“He was always friendly and smiling, no matter what,” Meier said. “He’d talk to anybody.”

Dr. Tom Antkowiak performed partial knee replacement surgery on Edith’s knee at Silver Cross Hospital resulting in a quicker and less painful recovery. Unlike total knee replacement, partial knee replacement replaces one side of the joint instead of the entire joint, using a smaller, less-invasive incision.

“Since many patients only have severe arthritis on one side of their knee, partial knee replacement is a good option since it only removes the bad tissue and saves the healthy joint tissue on the other side,” said Dr. Antkowiak.

“After this procedure, patients have a higher level of function, and many can quickly resume most activities,” said Dr. Antkowiak.

“Most importantly, after partial knee replacement surgery, patients experience a significant relief of pain as Edith did.”

Patients can generally achieve greater range of motion, and recovery is often half the time compared to total knee replacement.

“My advice to anyone with knee pain is to not waste another minute suffering,” said Vanderhyden.

“Oftentimes patients wait too long and their symptoms worsen creating more damage to their knee,” said orthopedic surgeon Dr. Rajeev Puri, Dr. Antkowiak’s partner. “Seek medical attention as soon as you have any severe knee pain.”

To his parents, Justin Heard was a kindhearted man who loved the Cubs and struggled with his weight.

To the online community, Justin used his food addiction to show empathy and support, and freely shared his personal experiences.

“Whenever someone had the same problem, he was very open so people didn’t have to go through it alone,” said Justin’s friend, Craig Meszaros of Joliet.

Justin, who grew up in Joliet, Channahon and Minooka, was 28 when he died Feb. 22 in Rantoul, where he was living. He weighed 630 pounds at the time. But he had valiantly tried for years to shed those excess pounds.

At one point, said Michelle Heard of Mahomet, Justin’s stepmother, Justin lost 200 pounds through CrossFit and water aerobics at the Plano branch of the Fox Valley YMCA, where Justin later worked.

He explored bariatric surgery, Michelle said, but doctors decided Justin’s size was too risky. Justin also made it to the final round of “The Biggest Loser” and moved to Houston, Texas, in an attempt to join the show “My 600-lb Life,”

Michelle added.

“At different times, I think he came to the point of, ‘This is never going to happen for me. I’ll never be able to lose this weight. I’ll never get beyond where I am now,’” Michelle said. “Then he’d talk to his friends and they’d encourage him.”

Tony Heard of Mahomet, Justin’s father, said Justin started battling his weight when he was just 8 years old. For years, Tony and Justin’s mother, Kathy Heard of Minooka – who died when Justin was 13 – took Justin to many doctors as they unsuccessfully tried to address it.

“It was very frustrating,” Tony said.

Michelle said people often judged Justin’s character by his size, which often limited his ability to find work.

“People thought Justin must be lazy because he was overweight, that he wouldn’t be a hard worker or good to have in the public eye,” Michelle said.

“But when Justin was at Best Buy, he was one of their top sellers and got high customer ratings on surveys. If you stopped to talk to Justin, you found out he was very intelligent. He worked the computer section. There wasn’t anything about computers he did not know.”

Jerlean “Baby” Craig, age 80, beloved daughter of Mamie Stokes and L.H. Craig was born in Wyatt, Missouri on Dec. 9, 1935. She departed this life on Monday, March 7, 2016.

She arrived in Joliet in 1950, where she was educated in the Joliet Public School System.

She was employed at Vandenberg Foods for many years before she eventually retired.

Jerlean was preceded in death by her grandparents, George and Sarah Alice Whiteside; and one sister, Bobbie Sallie.

She is survived by her two daughters, Cathy (Rick) Bargeron and Tiwana Douglas; two sons, Kirk Craig and Dirk Craig; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-greatgrandchild; five sisters, Willie J. Wells, Virgie Craig, Jacqueline Dillon, Linda Stokes and Billie Stokes; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Joan L. Ditton (nee Siemack), age 65, of Channahon, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2016, at Joliet Area Community Hospice Home.

Born Feb. 28, 1951, in Chicago to the late Genevieve and Julius Siemack, she attended the former Lockport West High School (Romeoville) and graduated with the class of 1969.

Beloved mother of Christina Guerra (Steve Watts), Amanda (Mike) Blaha and William (Julie) Ditton. Proud grandmother of Ricky; Nathan and baby Owen due any day now. Dear sister of Ron Siemback and Linda (George) Villa; best friend and beloved partner of 30 years to Robert Cienciak. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Joan was employed for many years by the U.S. Postal Service, retiring from the Fox Valley branch a few years ago. She enjoyed

traveling and the occasional trip to the casino, and in her younger years crocheting.

Bernard “Bernie” Charles Stonich, age 91, of Plainfield, passed away peacefully, March 10, 2016, at home with family at his side.

Born Aug. 28, 1924, in Joliet, to Joseph and Justine (nee Kracker) Stonich, he was a graduate of Joliet Township High School. A World War II veteran of the United States Navy, Bernie served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Saginaw Bay in the South Pacific. After returning home, he started a career as a salesman eventually retiring from Illinois Wine and Spirits.

Following his military service, Bernie dedicated his life to veterans and their needs. He was a member and former Commander of the Plainfield American Legion Marne Post #13, member and former Commander of Cantigny VFW Post #367 where he served many years as the Service Officer. Bernie was the recipient of numerous awards and was recognized for his service to veterans and their families. Many veterans will remember him for providing them transportation to and from Hines Veterans Administration Hospital. Bernie was also active in the Associated Clubs of Greater Joliet and St. Mary Nativity Parish.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 69 years, Shirley M. (nee Pubentz) Stonich; his children, Deborah (Jack) McInerney of Westmont, and

Riley B. Stover “Smokey”, age 78, a longtime Joliet resident, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2016, at Sunny Hill Nursing Home.

Born Sept. 10, 1937, in Livingston, TN, to the late Claris (nee Pryor) and Carnis Stover, he was raised in Southern Illinois and had resided in Joliet most all of his adult life. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a dedicated 30 year employee of Amoco Chemical (BP) who retired in 1994.

Beloved husband of 52 years (wed Sept.

SPRINGFIELD – Chicago Democrat Michael Madigan is known as a tireless worker – the nation’s longest-serving statehouse speaker, chairman of the Illinois Democratic Party, kingmaker and career-breaker – and he does it all without the aid of email or an appointment calendar.

That is one extraordinary fact turned up by an Associated Press public-records request of the General Assembly’s leaders in advance of Sunshine Week. The other is that the Illinois Senate considers itself immune under the state Constitution from having to turn over records.

The AP submitted such requests to legislative leaders in all 50 states for daily schedules and emails from government accounts for the week of Feb. 1 to 7. In Illinois, which was the last state in the U.S. to adopt an open-records law, the effort produced nothing, for these reasons: •••

NEW LENOX – A 31-year-old Chicago man died Saturday morning after being involved in a single-vehicle crash.

John P. Coghlan was pronounced dead at 8:34 a.m. Saturday in the emergency room at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office. He was

the driver of a car that was involved in a single-vehicle accident at Cedar and Wilmington/Peotone roads in Manhattan Township.

The Will County Sheriff’s Office is investigating. An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday, according to the coroner’s office. Funeral home selection was pending as of Saturday evening.

public servants for the best policy ideas without fear that they’ll be publicized. The section specifically covers “preparation of legislative documents.”

The House and Senate say all emails and calendar entries are preliminary drafts. The AP argued in its appeal that those items would have to include proposed legislation or language.

INVASION OF PERSONAL PRIVACY

FOIA allows the government to withhold “personal identifiers” in public records, such as Social Security or driver’s license numbers. Both the House and Senate use constitutional cover in arguing that publishing the names of people who contact legislators would discourage citizens from continuing to do so.

But privacy doesn’t cover officials’ public duties. And petitioners include lobbyists, other elected officials or corporate CEOs who are bending legislators’ ears – and typically pack more influence than an average voter.

Individual legislators are not considered “public bodies” under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act because they cannot alone pull the le-

vers of government like, say, the governor, who discloses his appointment calendars. But there are nuances in key court cases on the issue and advocates say transparency is just good government.

“There’s a compelling public interest to know who has access to legislators – because not everybody does,” said Matt Topic, a public-access lawyer for the Chicago-based firm Loevy & Loevy.

The AP’s requests produced nothing from Madigan, House Republican Leader Jim Durkin, Senate President John Cullerton or Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno. It has appealed the denials to the state attorney general’s public-access referee, who often takes years to decide.

BLOOMINGTON – Showing few signs of trying to ease the nation’s tense political atmosphere, Republican front-runner Donald Trump is standing by his antagonistic campaign rhetoric, rejecting any responsibility for violence at his rallies and defending his supporters who have been charged with assaulting protesters.

“We’re not provoking. We want peace. ... We don’t want trouble,” he told a large crowd in Bloomington, Illinois, the first of two comparatively docile events Sunday as he campaigns ahead of another critical slate of large-state primaries.

Trump’s remarks come after a near-riot Friday night in Chicago as Trump canceled a scheduled rally amid widespread altercations among his supporters, detractors and authorities.

His three-state schedule, which ended Sunday evening in Florida, also comes less than 48 hours before polls open in a five-state slate that could determine whether he wins the GOP nomination without a contested summer convention.

Against that backdrop, Trump continued to blame protesters, media and even Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders for the increasingly caustic campaign environment that his rivals assailed as “cause for pause” and certain “to do damage to America.”

Interrupted only sparingly in Illinois, Trump assured his backers their frustration is righteous rage against a corrupt political and economic system. He cast his naysayers as “bad

people” that “do harm to the country.”

He’s tried since Chicago to shift focus to Ohio, where he faces a late push from the popular governor, John Kasich. The outcome will help determine whether Trump can reach the 1,237 delegates required for nomination and avoid a contested GOP convention this summer in Cleveland.

“If we can win Ohio, we’re going to run the table, folks,” Trump said in West Chester, Ohio, his second event Sunday.

At an earlier stop this past weekend, Trump aimed directly at Kasich, calling him “a baby” and deliberately mispronouncing the governor’s Czech surname.

“He’s not the right guy to be president. He’s not tough enough, he’s not sharp enough,” Trump said at an event outside Dayton.

In line with his protectionist economic pitch, Trump noted Kasich’s support for the North American Free Trade Agreement as a member of Congress in the 1990s.

He went on to incorrectly identify the governor as KASE-itch. “Like, most people don’t even know how to pronounce his name. Kase-ick!

Kase-ick!” Trump mocked. “He cannot do the job, folks. He’s not your president.”

Kasich, meanwhile, reversed his monthslong practice of avoiding the topic of Trump.

Speaking with The Associated Press aboard his campaign bus between stops in Ohio, Kasich brandished his iPad and read a list of Trump quotes compiled by an aide.

The quotes included Trump’s comments that his audiences should “hit back” a little more and a statement that he’d like to punch a protester in the face.

That number is expected to rise as more reports come in from areas still battling floodwaters. Mississippi reported that 185 homes were damaged by floodwaters and about 650 homes sustained minor damage.

On Sunday, President Barack Obama signed an order declaring the flooding in Louisiana a major disaster.

Louisiana Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser said he was worried that many flood victims had not purchased flood insurance.

“A lot of these people I spoke to did not have flood insurance because they had never flooded before,” Nungesser said in a telephone interview.

He warned that residents may not get federal disaster aid if they didn’t have insurance. “It’s not going to be the open checkbook,” he added.

Search stopped for 3rd Hudson River tugboat crash victim The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – Divers late Sunday stopped searching inside a sunken tugboat for the body of a third crew member who went missing after the boat crashed into a barge on the Hudson River north of New York City.

“It has moved from a rescue and recovery operation to a salvage operation,” said Westchester County Police spokesman Kieran O’Leary, who added that an aerial and river search will continue on the remote chance the body of Harry Hernandez, 56, of Staten Island, New York, was ejected from the boat.

O’Leary said divers ceased their search because they were not able to access a section of the tugboat where they believe his body is located because of severe damage, O’Leary said.

The 90-foot tugboat named Specialist hit a barge early Saturday morning near where the new Tappan Zee

Bridge, which connects two counties north of New York City, is being built.

The tugboat sank, spilling about 5,000 gallons of fuel into the water.

Earlier, divers recovered the body of Timothy Conklin, 29, of Westbury, Long Island, New York. His body was brought back to shore after divers found him inside the tugboat around 11 a.m. Sunday.

The body of Paul Amon, 62, of Bayville, New Jersey, was pulled from the water Saturday.

Authorities said three tugboats were pushing a barge from Albany to Jersey City, New Jersey, when one of the three — situated on the right side as it headed south — hit a stationary barge that was part of the Tappan Zee Bridge construction project. A tugboat on the left side of the barge that was being pushed, as well as one that was pushing the barge from the rear, were not involved in the accident.

But there were reports of ra-

dio transmissions from the tug that crashed saying, according to Cuomo, “We are too close. We have to move left.” But it apparently was too late, the governor said.

Authorities believed the sunken tug is wedged directly underneath the barge it struck at the mid-span of the bridge.

Cuomo said he had been “hoping for a miracle” that the men would be found alive.

Instead, the governor said Sunday that he spent some time with the Conklin family, “which is obviously still in shock.”

Cuomo said in a statement that 21 workers were on the bridge construction barge that was hit, but none was injured. He added the construction barge was illuminated at the time of the pre-dawn collision.

Monday to assess the damage and figure out how to remove the wreckage from the river, O’Leary said. The company then will submit a salvage plan to the Coast Guard for approval, he said.

“When that’s under way, police will be present if they find a body,” O’Leary added.

The accident occurred near the center of the existing Tappan Zee Bridge, and the Specialist sank in about 40 feet of water within minutes, authorities said. The water temperature in the area was about 40 degrees, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Cuomo said a team was on-site to contain the leaking diesel fuel, and he did not expect any long-term damage as a result of the spill.

James Mercante, an attorney for the owner of Specialist, said the crew was licensed, competent and experienced personnel. He called the crash “a shocking, horrific marine tragedy.”

NEW ORLEANS – Widespread flooding in Louisiana and Mississippi has damaged thousands of homes, and the risk of more flooding played out Sunday as rain-filled rivers rose over banks.

At least four deaths have been reported in Louisiana, including that of an elderly man, authorities said.

Two fishermen have been missing for days in Mississippi.

In northwest Tennessee, more than a dozen homes were evacuated late Saturday after heavy rains breached a levee, according to emergency officials.

Flood warnings were in effect across the region as many rivers remained dangerously high.

Also of concern was another line of thunderstorms that was expected to hit parts of Oklahoma, Arkansas, northern Louisiana and northern Mississippi Sunday night. Hail and tornadoes were possible, forecasters said.

But Davyon Hill, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Shreveport, said this storm system was not expected to drop the kind of record-setting rains that the region has seen recently.

“At this point, any rain will aggravate the flooding situation,” he said.

“But these (storms) are kind of fast moving and isolated.”

In Louisiana, emergency officials

Authorities in Louisiana’s Natchitoches Parish said Harold Worsham, 78, drowned while trying to flee floodwaters on Saline Bayou. The sheriff’s office said Worsham was in a boat that capsized as he and two others were moving items from a home onto an aluminum boat.

On Sunday, Mississippi officials said they still were looking for two missing fishermen, but had no reports of injuries or deaths there.

Flooding on rain-swollen rivers remained a major concern.

In Tennessee, Emergency Management Agency director Rickey Graves in Gibson County told The Jackson Sun that about 10 homes in the community of Kenton and a half dozen homes in Trenton were evacuated Saturday night after a levee was breached.

It’s the most widespread non-hurricane flooding the Louisiana National Guard ever has dealt with, said Col. Pete Schneider, a guard spokesman.

The National Guard said it had about 1,400 soldiers and air crews at work in flooded areas throughout Louisiana, deploying in high-water vehicles, boats and three helicopters.

By Sunday morning, National Guard crews had evacuated more than 3,295 people and 316 pets as part of its round-the-clock operations.

To the Editor: The Republican Party’s No.’s 2, 3 and 4 all want to be the nominee.

Maybe one will win. Just a thought: What if all three banded together for the good of the country and its people? Decide which would be president, vice president and secretary of commerce. Announce it as a platform, refine their joint philosophy and compete as a solid block.

Doing this might upset the No. 1, plus be a strong contender against the other side.

Pick a qualified negotiator for secretary of state, someone who is well-respected with a military background.

A choice for secretary of defense should either be an active-duty and/ or retired admiral and/or general who is an astute military tactician.

Doing this may get our country back on the right track.

To the Editor: As a media specialist-teacher in Plainfield School District 202, I support the expansion of the Plainfield Public Library and encourage voters to get out and support it, too. When people talk about something being “for the children,” I can tell you what that really means in terms of the library.

I’ve seen firsthand in my work how our schoolchildren put to use not just the early literacy skills they gain at Plainfield Public Library, but also the early technology skills they learn there, too.

Children are such clean slates for learning and development, and they not only love to learn (and do so rapidly), but they love to use and share what they learn – to build on it.

Our kids take the things they get from the library and apply them to their schoolwork, as well as to their time spent with family and friends.

They teach one another, and they even take these new computer skills and the information they’ve soaked up about every topic imaginable, and share it with the grown-ups. They “teach” Mom and Dad and even Grandpa and Grandma. They meet and make many new friends through library programs, too. The way their parents did when they were little.

The Plainfield Library District helps our students to learn and practice reading and comprehension skills, research skills, technology skills and even social skills – all in a safe, positive and caring environment their parents can trust.

My family is casting four strong “yes” votes for the expansion of the Plainfield Public Library on Tuesday, and we ask all voters to do the same.

Illinois State Capitol is a house afire, not fire house As the Illinois House debated how to stop Illinois universities from further decomposing, some lawmakers talked about staying in Springfield until they came up with a fix.

That didn’t happen. They all went home March 4 and are not scheduled to return until April 4.

When the noon whistle blows, do firefighters turn off the hoses and go to lunch? When the battle is raging, do soldiers punch out and return to barracks because it is quitting time?

Of course not. Those are urgent situations.

Too bad Illinois House members feel no sense of urgency or emergency. No budget. No college spending authorization or help for the needy students who are not getting their tuition grants and may need to drop out. Time for a nice,

monthlong rest for the weary lawmakers of Springfield.

Colleges create wealth by improving our workforce. They hire thousands of people across Illinois, but specifically drive the economy in Edwardsville, Belleville and Granite City. Aren’t these economic engines worth putting in a few more days of work?

Not to mention creating any controls by adopting that little orphan of Illinois: the 2016 state budget.

The capitol building is on fire. Lawmakers cannot pretend Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner can put it out by himself when there is a drip of dollars coming in and an all-consuming debt standing at $7.25 billion.

Will anyone answer this ringing fire alarm?

In order to capture its first sectional championship in school history Friday, Lincoln-Way West’s boys basketball team needed to beat a program that had won four sectional titles and two state trophies during the past six seasons.

And thanks to an 11-0 closing run, the Warriors were able to do just that – stunning Hillcrest, 61-56, in the title game of the Class 3A Streator Sectional. In the process, they were able to avenge a 40-37 loss to the Hawks in last year’s Rich East Sectional championship.

But if coach Brian Flaherty’s squad wants to assure itself of even more

Morgan Park has gone 26-3 this season and is 107-19 over the past four campaigns. Coach Nick Irvin’s program took third place last year after winning state titles in 2013 and 2014.

Moore, a Memphis recruit who recently was selected as The Sun-Times Player of the Year after averaging 28 points this season. He has been a member of all four sectional champion teams, as has Alonzo Chatman, while classmates Jamal Burton and Jarrin Randall have both been on each of the last three squads.

It’s a good bet that the No. 2 Mustangs are looking forward to a rematch with top-ranked Belleville Althoff in the state championship, since Althoff ended Morgan Park’s hopes for a third-straight title in last year’s semifinals. But they need to beat West on Tuesday and then either No. 4

Rockford Boylan or No. 6 Peoria Manual in Friday’s semifinals in Peoria.

So the Warriors head into Tuesday’s supersectional as big underdogs with relatively few expecting them to pull off the upset. With no pressure on it and very high expectations placed on Morgan Park, West has little to lose and can focus on trying to spring the upset.

“I’m just happy that the kids were able to beat Hillcrest,” Flaherty said.

“As coaches, you always have another year. But the kids might not have had another chance, since it’s not every

Lewis men ousted in regional quarterfinal SUBMITTED REPORT SOMERS, Wis. – The Lewis men’s basketball team was unable to overcome a lethal combination of 18 turnovers and 12 Saginaw Valley State offensive rebounds as the No. 25 Cardinals claimed the 80-65 win over the Flyers in an NCAA Division II Midwest Regional quarterfinal late Saturday night at UW-Parkside’s DeSimone Gymnasium.

ond-chance points and 15 points off the Lewis miscues. The Cardinals also were aided by 11 3-pointers, led by five from senior guard Damon Bozeman (19 points).

SVSU shot 43.8 percent (28 of 64) from the field and 407 (11 of 27) from 3-point range.

Cardinal junior forward C.J. Turnage had 20 points on 9-for-15 shooting, plus a game-high eight rebounds, while senior guard Mitchell Baenziger drained three 3-pointers and finished

Lewis’ season ends with a 24-9 record, while the Cardinals improve to 23-7 and advanced to take on UWParkside in the semifinals Sunday night.

Lewis freshman guard Delaney Blaylock scored a game-high 21 points and had eight rebounds, while sophomore forward Max Strus finished with 16 points. Strus battled foul trouble for much of the game as he picked up his fourth foul with 19:05 left.

It’s best to keep West’s recent rise to prominence in some perspective. During their first four seasons (2009-10 to 2012-13), the Warriors went 14-104, with eight of those wins coming in its second year.

Then they posted a 12-14 record in 2013-14.

Last season marked the start of a new era for the program, as firstyear coach Flaherty and assistant Dick Mandella led them to a 21-8 campaign, ending in disappointing fashion when they couldn’t hang on to a big lead and fell to Hillcrest in the sectional finals.

Mandella has a long track record for coming up with good defensive game plans, as was evident against Hillcrest. But the hall of fame coach will have to come up with one of his best strategies yet in to try to slow down the explosive Mustangs.

“I have to give coach Mandella a huge shout-out for what he’s done with our defense,” Flaherty said. “He’s kind of the mastermind behind a lot of our zone stuff that we do. I can’t say enough good stuff about him. He’s been able to keep us in games when we’re not scoring. In the press we had today, the kids were very active, and we did a nice job with it.”

West has had its share of ups and downs this season but finally has put it all together at the right time and improved to 20-9 after rallying late to knock off Hillcrest for the sectional championship.

It marked the first time in school history that a Warriors squad captured a sectional title in an elimination tournament.

The Flyers kept the game close for the next eight minutes as Saginaw Valley State held a 49-46 lead with 12:50 left.

The Cardinals, however, put the game away for good as they went on a 20-5 run over the next 3:44 to extend their lead to 69-51. Bozeman hit three of his 3-pointers during that stretch to help clinch the victory.

As a team, Lewis shot 44.9 percent (22 of 49) from the field and .333 (5 of 15) from 3-point range.

Lincoln-Way West junior guard Junior guard Marco Pettinato and senior forward Jon Marotta lead West, while senior guard Cam Gavin and junior guards Jay Bumstead and Nolan Green generally have made up the starting five.

Junior guard Cal Pohrte and senior guard Erik Christensen are usually the first two off of the bench. Four others should also be back next year for the young squad.

“It’s one of those things that I don’t think has hit a lot of us yet,

especially Jon and me, who had brothers who played here, and we’ve pretty much been around since the school opened,” Pettinato said of the historic sectional title.

“We’ve done all of this in seven seasons and built a program that only had three wins before my freshman year, and now we’re talking about playing in a supersectional. It’s just a surreal feeling.”

Whether the Warriors win again this season or not, the foundation is firmly in place for this program to continue to enjoy success as it prepares to move up one class next season.

“My brother was on the first year when they had no wins, and in my other brother’s freshman year, they had three wins,” Marotta said.

“So having a nice 20-win season last year and another one this year was just huge for us to be able to turn this program around.”

PITTSBURG, KAN. – The No. 5 Lewis University women’s track placed fourth at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday. Lincoln (Mo.) won the title with 60 points, while the Flyers tied for fourth with host Pittsburg State with 31 points.

The Flyers earned two All-America showings in the triple jump from Cierra Pulliam (Romeoville) and Amber Cook. Pulliam jumped 40 feet 10.25 inches on her last attempt, while Cook placed fifth with a 40-2.25 leap on her last attempt.

Amanda Farrough picked up her second All-America honor in as many nights, finishing third in the 3,000-meter run (9:32.06). Chantel Stennis (Bolingbrook) earned her sixth career All-America mark with a sixth-place finish of 24.27 seconds in the 200-meter dash.

The No. 14 Lewis men finished 11th as Isaac Jean-Paul earned his third consecutive All-America award in the high jump, clearing 6 feet 11 inches to finish fourth. The Flyers got another fourth-place finish from Sergio Miranda (Romeoville) in the 800-meter run (1:49.48).

Andre Barnes claimed his second consecutive All-America honor in the 400-meter dash with a seventh-place showing of 47.60. The Flyers’ 4x400 relay team of Barnes, Miranda, Matt Jemilo and Chris Wilson (Minooka) placed third in 3:10.74.

AVONDALE, Ariz. – For the second time in a month, two cars crossed the finish line seemingly together and no one was sure who won.

Electronic scoring and slow-motion replays put Kevin Harvick in a familiar spot on top at Phoenix International Raceway, and NASCAR celebrated another thrilling race to start the season.

Harvick and Carl Edwards twice bumped on the final lap before Harvick inched over the finish line first by 0.01 seconds in an overtime finish Sunday for his record eighth Sprint Cup victory at the mile oval.

It was the same margin of victory as Denny Hamlin’s over Martin Truex Jr. last month in the Daytona 500.

“That’s really what NASCAR racing is all about,” Harvick said. “You’re coming to the checkered flag – and he wants to win for his team, and I want to win for my team.

There’s a lot on the line.”

Harvick had the lead off a late restart, but Edwards had two fresh right-side tires and made it a side-by-side duel.

“I knew he was better through (Turns) 3 and 4,” Harvick said. “That was not the car that I wanted to see behind me.”

Harvick, on the high side,

turned into Edwards’ door first to try to slow his momentum. Edwards returned the favor in what he called “a drag race,” but came up just short.

“If we had one more lap, I could have passed him clean,” Edwards said. “But it just wasn’t going to work without bumping him. So I decided to hit him as hard as I did. I really didn’t want to wreck him. I thought I moved him enough to get by, but it’s just racing.”

Harvick made up for qualifying 18th by shooting toward the front early in the race. He took the lead for good in the No. 4 Chevrolet when he immediately passed Edwards on a restart with 77 laps to go.

Harvick built a lead approaching 3 seconds before Kasey Kahne hit the wall with six laps left to bring out the caution.

Harvick crew chief Rodney Childers decided to stay on the track while Edwards and others took on two tires.

Harvick had enough fuel for the extra two laps, but needed to do some banging to hold off Edwards’ Toyota.

“I don’t think there’s any real love lost between the two of us,” Harvick said. “I knew that I was going to get hit and I’m going to hit him.

“I don’t want to spin him out, but you definitely want to rough him up because that’s not the guy I want to lose to and I know he doesn’t want to

lose to me.”

It was another success for NASCAR’s new downforce and aerodynamic packages.

Used for the first time on a mile-track, it helped produce plenty of passing and only a handful of tire issues on long green-flag runs.

Harvick led a race-high 139 laps in the closest finish in track history. It’s tied for seventh-closest overall since NASCAR began electronic scoring in 1993.

Hamlin recovered from an early pit penalty to finish third. Kyle Busch, his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, started from the pole and led the first 77 laps before ending up fourth.

Dale Earnhardt Jr, who ended Harvick’s four-race winning streak at Phoenix with a rain-shortened victory in November, was fifth.

Two days after a scary crash in which he pulled off his steering wheel in qualifying, Jimmie Johnson finished 11th.

Harvick found another way to win at his favorite track. He’s won five of the past six races and six of eight at Phoenix.

“I just like racing here,” Harvick said. “It’s just one of those places where I feel like I’ve been here enough times to where I can move around and find something to make our car work.”

St. Joseph-Ogden routs Rockridge for Class 2A title

PEORIA – St. Joseph-Ogden got 20 points out of its superstar Brandon Trimble and 14 more out of second-leading scorer Jake Pence on Saturday night in a 61-43 rout of Taylor Ridge-Rockridge in the IHSA Class 2A state championship.

Trimble averaged nearly 27 points a game on the season and scored 44 in the Spartans’ semifinal win Friday, but he scuffled early to get points in the final. The team’s balanced scoring carried them. Garrett Grimsley scored nine first-half points, and Pence added eight to Trimble’s seven.

“Garrett was big for us, huge actually,” Trimble said.

“They did a good job on me, defended me really well. Garrett made them guard another person, that was big for Jake and myself.”

Grimsley, who hit three 3-pointers, said that’s just his job.

“I did what I am supposed to do. I came in and hit that first 3, and then it’s game on,” Grimsley said. “I couldn’t wait to get the ball again. I hit another and now I want to shoot it every time I touch it. It was fun.”

Coach Brian Brooks echoed both Trimble and Grimsley.

“It’s awfully hard for a kid to go out and get 40 points on consecutive nights,” he said.

“We knew other kids would have to step up, and they did.”

Harvick nips Edwards in wild finish for 8th Phoenix victory

PEORIA – Matt Chastain scored 21 points, and Noah Perry made a game-winning 3-pointer with 30 seconds left as LeRoy won its first state title with a 38-35 victory over Leo on Saturday in the IHSA Class 1A state championship.

Perry took a pass from Chastain on the right wing and drained the 3. Although the 6-foot 2 senior struggled from the field, hitting just two shots in 11 attempts prior to the game-winner, Chastain still trusted Perry with the ball.

“He was open,” Chastain said. “I’d have been crazy not to give it to him.”

Perry finished with nine points. Teddy Harms grabbed eight boards, and Nick Perry chipped in eight points for the Panthers (285).

Darias Oliver scored 14 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for Leo (24-9), which never led in the game.

Chastain created shots all night, hitting four pull-up jumpers en route to 12 points in the first half. He then created space for drives with a smooth crossover dribble in the second half. Chastain probably could have taken the shot that gave LeRoy the title. The kick-out to Perry surprised just about everyone, even Perry.

“It did surprise me a little, honestly,” Perry said. “But I knew he was driving and he would kick it to someone if he didn’t have a shot. It just happened to be me.”

Perry said that even though he struggled shooting the ball, he didn’t change anything from the five attempts before. “I just looked it down, took the shot, and this one went in,” he said. “It was time, I guess.”

The Lions struggled from the field, but tied it after two free throws from Darius Branch. Branch finished

with eight points on 2-of-17 shooting.

“We just didn’t finish when we needed it,” Leo coach Shawn Frison said.

“We just couldn’t get shots to fall.” The Lions made just 12 of 47 shots.

Mykel Hampton added eight points for Leo, which played much of the game with its third-leading scorer, Corrielle Robinson, hobbled with an ankle injury.

The Associated Press A topsy-turvy season in college basketball delivered a few more twists when the brackets came out Sunday.

Exhibit A: Oregon and Virginia are No. 1 seeds, while Michigan State is not.

Exhibit B: Monmouth and Valparaiso aren’t part of March Madness, but Michigan and Syracuse are.

As usual, the NCAA selection committee released a 68-team bracket with its fair share of surprises. This year, the debate started right away, when the committee named Pac-12 champion Oregon a top seed in the West, ACC runner-up Virginia a top seed in the Midwest and made Tom Izzo’s Spartans, champs of the Big Ten, a “2.”

They’ll decide it on the court. The tournament starts Tuesday with a pair of opening-round games. The main draw begins Thursday at eight sites.

The Final Four is April 2 and 4 in Houston.

In a season in which six teams held the top spot in The Associated Press poll – one short of the record – there was no doubt there would be some debate about who belonged in the four top spots. That Big 12 and Atlantic Coast Conference champions Kansas and North Carolina earned two of the spots wasn’t that surprising. The rest of it raised eyebrows.

The head of the selection committee, Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione, lauded Oregon’s third-rated strength of schedule (as of Sunday) and No.2 ranking in the RPI, along with its regular-season and tournament titles in the Pac-12. He said Michigan State was the fifth overall seed.

“Very close. It was a vigorous debate,” Castiglione said. “We know how good a team they are. ... It was just a close call and the committee felt Michigan State was fifth.”

But there were no easy choices for the committee this season, and the way the big slate of conference tournaments played out only emphasized the way this season has gone. Of the 31 postseason tournaments, top seeds only won 10.

That gave automatic spots to bubble teams (or less) such as Fresno State, Gonzaga and Connecticut, while squeezing out a few spots bubble spots – even though there were two more available this season because Louisville (and Rick Pitino) and SMU (and Larry Brown) are both ineligible.

Dear Dr. K: An aging friend was told he has problems with “executive function.”

So, of course, I’m wondering what that is, if I also could have that problem, and what can be done about it. Could you explain?

Dear Reader: Executive function refers to a set of mental attributes required to make choices, plan, initiate action and inhibit impulses. While “executive function” is a term used to describe attributes of business executives, it applies to everyone.

For example, consider a stay-at-home mom who has to drive three young kids to different places at different times. And who must arrange for and monitor work that needs to be done on the house. And who is responsible for organizing the next family vacation. And who is “on point” (in the absence of dad) to settle disputes among the kids efficiently and with equanimity. That mom is demonstrating all of the attributes of executive function – and being paid nothing for it.

So ask yourself the following questions.

If you are responsible for planning something, is it clear what the steps are, and in what order? Will you be able to focus on the task at hand and ignore other tasks?

Will you be able to control any anger and impatience that might make you less efficient or effective? Do you shy away from asking others for help? Can you improve how you explain your vision or plans to others? If you’re easily distracted, does your smartphone always need to be on, or can callers leave text messages or voicemails? That’s just a partial list.

The good news is you can help preserve executive function by doing many of the

Lack of sleep scrambles executive function, so there’s another reason to get enough sleep. High blood pressure seems to have a harmful effect on executive function. So if you have it, make the lifestyle changes required and take the medicines prescribed.

Researchers are looking into whether certain drugs might help older people with executive function deficits. So far, the results have been mixed.

In the meantime, try the following to improve (or compensate for) your executive function: • Do what you can to eliminate distractions. As I mentioned earlier, go “off the grid” from your smartphone or computer.

• Pay attention to paying attention. In other words, work on maintaining focus.

• Make it a habit. Always put keys and other personal items in the same place so you don’t have to remember where you put them.

• Write it down. Lists and plans of action are a way of “outsourcing” executive function from the brain to a piece of paper or a computer file.

Jeanne My wife is a liar Phillips and lies about small things. I realized it about 10 years ago and have tried to reason with her. We have two daughters, and the older one is like her mom and also has a habit of lying.

Over the past few years, I have started calling my wife on it whenever she lies to me. For the past eight months, we have not talked, and we sleep in different rooms. She has never made an effort to fix our relationship. I want a divorce, but for the kids’ sake I am not talking about it or forcing the issue. I’m very depressed and don’t know what to do. I have started drinking a lot late at night when everybody in the house is asleep. My most frequent correspondent is Steve Conrad, of Manhasset, New York. He has a good eye for an instructive deal, so this week let’s look at a sextet of them.

First, we have a defense that requires deduction and disobeying the textbook. It is not as straightforward as it appears when you look at the full diagram.

Against three no-trump, West was right to lead his fourth-highest heart, not the queen. Only lead an honor from three touchers (Q-J-10) or two touchers and a gap of one card to a near-toucher (A-Q-J or Q-J-9).

South plays dummy’s king in the hope that West holds the ace.

Now the spotlight falls on East.

The textbook says that if you win the first trick, you return the lowest from three remaining cards (or the higher from two). Here, though, if East leads back the heart six, it blocks the suit.

West wins with his jack and plays another heart, but East can take only two more tricks with his 10 and eight.

South then claims nine winners: two spades, two diamonds and five clubs.

From the Rule of Eleven (4 from 11 is 7), East knows that South started with only one heart higher than the four, which must be the jack (declarer misguessed at trick one) or the nine. If it is the jack, South must have begun with only two hearts; otherwise, he would have played low from the dummy at trick one to guarantee a heart trick. So, East should lead back his 10. Here, he wins the trick and plays another heart. But if South could cover the 10 with the jack, West must make that deduction about jack-doubleton and lead a low heart at trick three, not cash his nine from an original Q-9-5-4-3. Tough.
