Two found slain in Joliet auto shop

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A man and woman were found slain Wednesday in a Joliet auto body shop.

The Will County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as Michael R. Oram, 48, of Joliet and Jamie L. Wills, 43, of Lockport.

Joliet Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said the business’s owner discovered the bodies about 11:45 a.m. and called authorities to Fleet Specialty Painting and Auto Body, 809 E. Cass St. “There were signs that there were injuries that were consistent with homicide,” Roechner said.

The shop occupies an older single-story building with a large garage door just off Cass Street and a parking area to the west. The business is advertised with a “Complete Auto Body Repair” sign.

“There is obvious trauma to the bodies. We’re investigating foul play,” Roechner said.

He said Joliet police have obtained surveillance footage from a few businesses in the

area and that detectives were looking at the footage, but that they did not know when the deaths occurred.

Roechner said detectives would wait for evidence technicians to finish processing the crime scene before going through the shop. The technicians still were working as of about 7:45 p.m., and police expected to work through the

Lincoln-Way D-210 officials propose reduction of teachers

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way High School District 210 officials gathered no public comment at a hearing Wednesday on the reduction in force of teaching positions for next school year.

Superintendent Scott Tingley said at the hearing the administration is proposing a reduction in force of 28 full-time-equivalent teaching positions and five retirees who will not be replaced.

The Board of Education is slated to vote on the proposal after a closed session at Thursday’s board meeting at Lincoln-Way Central High School.

The reduction in force is part of district officials’ plan to reduce multimillion-dollar budget deficits by closing North high school, one of its four academic buildings.

Tingley said the reductions

will not take place at one school but across the district.

The amount of savings from the reduction in force is estimated to be “in the neighborhood” of $2.5 million, he said.

He said all teachers will be honorably dismissed and will have call-back rights that extend to three years. With callback rights, he said, teachers who are dismissed will be offered any open positions in the future.

“As we move forward, it’s necessary that we do this. We stay with the plan to financially stabilize our district,” he said.

Wednesday’s hearing at Central lasted less than five minutes and was attended by a handful of people.

Board Vice President Dee Molinare and board members Christopher Kosel, Christine Glatz, Ronald Lullo and Kathleen Casey were at the hearing.

District officials will be working on a reduction in force of educational support staff in the future, he said.

Since landing on the state financial watch list last year, Lincoln-Way officials have decided to close North – one of its newest high schools – this fall to reduce budget deficits.

The board’s decision to close North has been challenged in court by the citizens group Lincoln-Way Area Taxpayers Unite. A Will County judge ruled in the district’s favor to dismiss the group’s lawsuit but allowed two counts to be refiled in an amended complaint.

Lincoln-Way is one of six school districts on the state financial watch list that the Illinois State Board of Education is investigating to determine if conditions exist for a certification of financial difficulty.

County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil said an autopsy would be scheduled for Thursday.

John Casillas, who lives four blocks from the business, was among the few residents waiting Wednesday night past the police tape and vehicles.

“It’s a sad situation,” he said, noting that to his knowledge the auto shop has been there for decades and its owner is well-known in the community.

Casillas said he raised his children in the neighborhood.

“They used to walk this street right here all the time,” he said.

JJC President Deb Daniels said there are typically 350 veterans taking classes at the college each semester.

“The college has specifically developed new veterans support programs, especially in the last five years,” Dan-

iels said.

She called the $5,000 donation “our first step in what I believe to be a long and fruitful partnership with Amazon Fulfillment.”

JJC also has a Global Supply Chain Management and Logistics program aimed at providing courses for people working in the logistics industry being developed in Joliet. While Amazon opened last year, Ikea, Whirlpool and Mars also have announced plans to open distribution centers in Joliet.

The city also is home to distribution operations for Home Depot and Dollar Tree.

Business Department Chairman Bill O’Connor said many people are unaware of the opportunities in the logistics business.

“These are serious jobs,” he said.

“These are not just low-level jobs.

These are jobs that can lead to great careers.”

O’Connor called the Amazon announcements Wednesday “terrific.”

“They have a serious commitment to education,” he said. “They understand the importance of having skilled workers.”

Flannery noted in his remarks that Amazon has a Career Choice program that pays 95 percent of tuition and fees for workers taking college classes, even if the fields of study are not directly related to their work.

He also said Amazon values veterans in its workforce in Joliet and elsewhere. Flannery said Amazon hired 3,800 veterans last year and more than 10,000 since 2011. The company also provides support services for veterans coming out of military service and making a transition to civilian life, he said.

Plainfield residents ask officials about street, rail projects

vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Utility work for some of the older parts of Plainfield is on the five-year agenda for the village’s Public Works Department.

Plainfield Director of Public Works Allen Persons said the village is looking into future work on alleys and roads in downtown Plainfield, such as Commercial Street. His comments were prompted by a question at the monthly Plainfield Coffee with the Mayor meeting Wednesday morning. “[These are] the oldest areas of the community,” Persons said. “They also have some of the oldest infrastructure. Water and sewer lines are more than 100 years old. And some of the old

water mains are still there.”

In addition to utilities, Persons said, some of the residential roads in the downtown area have been overlaid so many times that the curbs are small or almost nonexistent at some points.

“Ultimately, it’s in our five-year plan to replace the utilities in that area,” Persons said.

The question came from resident Keebie Bright, who bought and is maintaining the oldest home in Plainfield, on Commercial Street.

Bright was concerned about the state of the roads and that people seem to be speeding down alleyways onto Route 59.

Police Chief John Konopek said the department does not have the personnel to constantly patrol and enforce

speed at the location, but he said village code mandates a 10 mph speed limit in alleyways.

“As far as traffic on Route 59, we’re looking at heavy traffic enforcement,” Konopek said. “It’s tough to set up ... because of the geography. But we are emphasizing traffic enforcement.”

CN, D Construction

Mayor Michael Collins said the sometimes-heated conversations of village staff with rail company Canadian National and Route 30 construction contractor D Construction have been fruitful.

“Ever since then, we’re happy with the progress we’ve made with both those entities,” Collins said, alluding to train stoppage issues with CN and problems during the ongoing Route 30

construction project.

“It doesn’t hurt to stir the soup sometimes,” Collins said.

Persons said the train stoppages around downtown Plainfield have almost stopped since CN moved its hotbox wheel detector from Lockport Street to Renwick Road. Also, CN likely will complete the often-delayed 135th Street grade crossing project late next week.

D Construction is well ahead of schedule on the Route 30 project, Persons said. There was a recent gas line incident that was not the fault of the contractor, but otherwise, the project is ahead of schedule.

“But I would still avoid the area, personally,” Persons said. “There are times when they will have flaggers out there stopping traffic.”

JOLIET – Amazon announced Wednesday it is adding 500 jobs at its Joliet fulfillment center.

The announcement was made during an event at Joliet Junior College where Amazon, which opened the Joliet facility in October, presented a $5,000 check to support scholarships for veterans at the college.

The new jobs will bring the employee count at the Joliet facility to 1,500.

Mike Flannery, general manager of the Joliet fulfillment center, said the expansion reflects growing demand and the success of the local operation.

“It just speaks to the growth of the industry and the great people who work in the community,” he said.

He said Amazon is hiring now and plans to fill the positions as soon as possible.

Flannery got a round of applause at the JJC event when he announced Amazon was adding “500 full-time jobs with benefits starting on Day 1.”

The announcement added to what Mayor Bob O’Dekirk called “the economic boom” on the south end of Joliet, where Amazon and other companies have been adding distribution facilities and other industrial operations.

O’Dekirk was one of a several speakers during the Amazon event at JJC. “If you look around the state ... there’s not a lot of good economic news

BROADWAY STREET SHOPS BECOME FOCAL POINT OF CORRIDOR CLEANUP Issue highlights free enterprise vs. city interests

vshanker@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – Broken gravel, walking paths crudely shaped by mounds of dirt and a series of old, worn-down buildings line the Crest Hill side of Broadway Street, north of Theodore Street.

“It’s an eyesore,” several Crest Hill aldermen said at a city workshop meeting Feb. 23.

The Crest Hill City Council made it clear at that meeting that they had heard enough about how run-down Broadway Street was, how unsightly it was, and how it compared to the city of Joliet’s stretch of the road.

The solution: Along with cleaning up the viaduct area along Broadway, push businesses on the corridor – primarily auto shops – to clean up by clamping down on a previously unenforced zoning code.

But some auto shops said the city’s demands are hurting their businesses, and even might push them to close.

Broadway Street

The Broadway Street economic corridor is full of properties that have been operating as auto body shops since the early 20th century.

The most recent revised zoning code, passed in 2000, zoned most Broadway properties as B-2, General Business District. That means only smalljob auto servicing is allowed. But most of the auto repair shops have been performing heavy work and even selling cars since then.

Last summer, building inspector Eric Gall started enforcing the zoning code by talking with Broadway auto shops.

“This has gone under the radar for too long,” said Assistant City Manager Heather McGuire, who also is the city attorney. “Under the zoning, they can’t operate legally anymore. ... But the City Council ended up passing an ordinance granting them legal nonconforming status.”

That was in October, and stipulations of the ordinance included deadlines to clean up junk, garbage and debris – including inoperable or unregistered vehicles, tires and car parts or tools – by Feb. 1.

The ordinance allows two shops to continue selling cars, but limits them to a maximum of four cars a year, with a maximum two at a time. Newer auto sale businesses are allowed to sell more because they are zoned B-3.

Also, any building code violations should be corrected and all parking areas should be paved by Nov. 1, 2016.

On Monday, the council officially extended the Feb. 1 cleanup deadline to April 18 for three of five auto shops that still needed to comply with the ordinance.

Lockport Twp. fire district plans station overhaul

Shaw Media Correspondent LOCKPORT – The Lockport Township Fire Protection District is planning to demolish and rebuild Station 1, at the intersection of Seventh and Ninth streets in downtown Lockport.

Fire Chief Dave Skoryi outlined the plans for the $3.5 million project, which will not require a tax levy increase, at a public hearing Tuesday night during the Lockport Planning and Zoning Commission meeting.

Station 1 was built in 1959 when emergency vehicles were much smaller than today’s models; the district was staffed by volunteers, so no sleeping and kitchen quarters were required; and separation of spaces for men and women was not necessary, Skoryi told the commission.

A 4-foot elevation difference between the front and rear of the tri-

angular lot also has caused flooding in the back of the building during storms, he said. Furthermore, an overhaul of the sewer lines, electrical services and HVAC systems is needed.

Since 2010, the district has explored ideas for remodeling the current building; but with an estimated cost of $2.35 million, consultants at FGM Architects recommended the district look at constructing a whole new building, Skoryi said.

The new, 9,000-square-foot building would be about the same size as the current building, but with three deeper bays, as opposed the six in the current building, and a higher ceiling, Skoryi said. It will be the same design as Station 5 on O’Hare Road, but with an extra bay.

NEW LENOX – The New Lenox Community Park District’s Proud American Days festival will be held July 28 to 31 along the Route 30 corridor, west of the

The project will be financed partly through the fire district’s general fund and partly with a preapproved bond for $2.3 million at an interest rate of 2.2 percent, district Finance Director Bob Mondrella said.

The bond will be paid out of the fire district’s operating expenses and will not affect taxes, Mondrella said.

within 250 feet of the station informing them of the public hearing and outlining the station plans, Skoryi said. One resident spoke in favor of the plan at the meeting Tuesday, and none spoke against it.

The proposal will go to the City Council’s Committee of the Whole meeting Wednesday, with a possible approval by the council’s first meeting in April.

The council will consider final site, building elevation, landscape and engineering plans as well as a special-use permit.

A bid letting is scheduled at the end of March; and if bids come within budget, the project should start by the end of April, Skoryi said after the meeting.

“Our architects estimate the project to be completed within 12 months,” he said, “but are shooting for completion at the end of 10 months.”

George Lattas, a Chicago-based attorney for Alexsoff, said he was surprised by the irate tone the City Council took with the auto shops Feb. 23.

“It’s important to recognize the city is trying to do good by its people,” Lattas said. “Their intentions are good.

But I think they’re completely failing to understand these are real businesses, with real employees and real owners.”

J&H Auto Service owner Juan Hernandez said the code enforcement has heavily diminished his business. J&H, at 1714 N. Broadway St., is one of the three auto shops listed under the ordinance.

“I had to clean all cars in the back,” Hernandez said, adding that he now works only on local dealers’ cars. “But

they want me to hire contractors to pave the back.”

Hernandez estimated the cost of the paving could be $35,000. He plans to complete it in phases before the Nov. 1 deadline.

McGuire acknowledged that the businesses have progressed in cleaning up their properties. But A1 Elite, J&H and the third shop, Steve’s Auto Repair at 1812 N. Broadway St., still have a long way to go.

“I think we approached this in the most equitable manner as we could,” McGuire said. “We’ve never attempted to treat them unfairly. If there are other property owners in a similar situation, we’ll approach them the same way.”

Limited primary day services at Will County Clerk’s Office

Auto shop owners have expressed a desire to comply with the city’s zoning code. But some feel they’re being pushed out of business by the city.

“I don’t know how long I can stay open,” A1 Elite Auto Shop owner Dimitri Alexsoff said.

A1 Elite, at 1600 N. Broadway St., is one of the three shops still under the city’s microscope.

Alexsoff took over management of A1 Elite after his father, the longtime shop owner, died in December. Alexsoff said the city told him he needed to move the dozens of cars parked on his unpaved lot.

A street-side part of A1 Elite’s lot was paved last year. Since then, Alexsoff said, he has been doing his best to remove the cars from the rest of his property.

“It costs time, and it costs money,” Alexsoff said, claiming that he was taking losses by getting rid of cars he could have fixed up for resale. “At the same time, my mother, brother, everyone has been grieving. It’s been really tough.”

Frankfort board approves turning old Dominick’s store into movie theater

By SHAW MEDIA FRANKFORT – The Frankfort Village Board has approved plans that will allow Emagine Entertainment to build a luxury movie theater at the former Dominick’s location.

Troy, Michigan-based Emagine Entertainment operates 80 movie screens at nine locations in Michigan. Frankfort will be its first foray into the Illinois market, according to a news release from the village.

The 75,000-square-foot theater in Frankfort will have 10 screens and about 1,300 powered reclining chairs.

It also will have reserved seating and offer food and alcoholic beverages. Complimentary valet parking is planned, and the theater will remain open until 2 a.m., according to the news release.

Daeviontae D. Pruitte, 22, of the 500 block of Strong Street, was arrested by Will County sheriff’s police and booked into the Will County jail shortly after Daeviontae 5 p.m. Tuesday. He was D. Pruitte charged with theft.

Bolingbrook Police Lt. Carter Larry said Pruitte was recorded on surveillance video taking a cellphone from the top of another person’s locker at

the Sony warehouse at 352 International Parkway.

“He also utilized his employee key card when entering the warehouse,” Larry said.

On Aug. 1, 2012, Timothy L. Egner, 54, was shot to death in his car outside Wendy’s, 104 N. Center St. in Joliet.

Joliet police said they found Pruitte running in the street the next evening while carrying the gun used to kill Egner.

In July 2015, Pruitte was tried on murder charges, but Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes ruled that his possession of the weapon was not enough evidence to link him to the murder because he also was stopped and searched by Will County sheriff’s police the night Egner was slain.

He said that while making decisions at a moment’s notice, as a member of the military for 22 years, he had to think about the long-term effect of those decisions, something the county board should be doing.

“I know my experience will transition well to the board,” he said. “I know it’s a strength I have.”

“I try not to see things along the ‘D’ and ‘R’ lines,” Roth said. “I look at what is best for the taxpayer first, the employees second and others third.”

He said he feels his experience in business as a former builder, a buyer for Caterpillar and a project manager at Professional Meter gives him the insight needed to have the tough discussions that need to be had at the county level, especially involving the budget.

Republican voters in District 1 will choose three of the four candidates in the March 15 primary.

MORRIS – Four candidates are seeking three spots in the Democrat primary for Grundy County Board District 3: Ann Gill, Frank Halpin Jr., James Riley and Jim Ryan.

Ann Gill, 45, of Coal City was appointed to the county board in 2005 and has remained on the county board since that time.

“I’ve always been interested in government; I think it goes back to when I was in college and covering college government for the newspaper,” Gill said.

She said she enjoys the work part of the job, not the campaigning, and likes being part of the process that looks out for residents.

Her biggest concern moving forward is the budget and increasing economic growth in the area.

“No matter where you live in the county, there is room for economic development – there is a lot of potential for growth,” Gill said. “We need to look at how the county board can work with municipalities to grow.”

Frank Halpin Jr., 62, of South Wilmington has had a seat on the

needed on the county board, and he feels he is up to the challenge.

“I want to be a voice for all of Grundy County, but especially District 3,” he said. “People tend to forget about us at this end of the county, so I want to be their voice.”

He said he always has had an interest in politics and that, coupled with his love of helping people, makes him a great candidate for county board.

He said the county needs to address the financial difficulties it is facing and not be afraid of change, especially if it helps taxpayers by lessening their tax burden.

Jim Ryan of Morris said in response to a candidate questionnaire that he served for two years on the Grundy County Board in the past and he enjoyed being a part of the dayto-day process that the county was involved in.

“I understand the decision-making process and feel that, once again, I can bring a different perspective to the board so that the best decisions for the people of Grundy County will be made,” he said in a typed response.

Democrat voters in District 3 will choose three of the four candidates in the March 15 primary.

OBITUARIES WILLIAM F. ALBRECHT William F. Albrecht, “Bubba,” age 66, passed away suddenly, Monday, Feb. 29, 2016. Born in Chicago and a resident of Romeoville for the past three years, William was a hard-working man who was generous toward others and who loved his family and friends. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

Preceded in death by his parents, William and Helen (Lichner) Albrecht.

Survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Joellen (Lacek); his children, William III (Andrea), Allison (Jeff) Pilz, Amy (Pat) Bobko and Gene (Angie) Kanak; his grandchildren, Alexa, Briana, Mary and Geno; a brother, Ray (Peggy) Kobes; and a sister, Charlene (Ron) Mionske.

Larry was born in Centralia, IL. He was the son of Bobbie Dodd and Loy Dodd. He served in the U.S. Navy.

His children are Aleshia (Isidro) Reyes of Godley and Jordon Dodd of Crest Hill; Larry was the brother of Shirley (Doug) Jackson, Tommy Dodd, Nancy (Danny) Albert and Robin (Brad) Smith.

His grandchildren are Brenden, Isabella and Sofia. Larry also had many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Loy Dodd.

Larry was retired from Roofers Union Local 11.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 12, at 1 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, located at 655 Springfield Ave., Joliet, IL. An inurnment will be held Monday, March 14, at 2:30 p.m. at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

He was a proud U.S. Army veteran and was member of the American Legion Post 1080. He was also a member of Joliet Moose Lodge 300. John was the vice president auditor of the First National Bank of Joliet for 45 years. He enjoyed playing the piano and woodworking and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

He will be remembered for his love of motocross, go kart and stock car racing. Craig also took pleasure in building models, slot cars and remote control cars.

LONDON – George Martin, the Beatles’ urbane producer who quietly guided the band’s swift, historic transformation from rowdy club act to musical and cultural revolutionaries, has died, his management said Wednesday. He was 90.

Too modest to claim the title of the fifth Beatle, the tall, elegant Londoner produced some of the most popular and influential albums of modern times – “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” “Revolver,” “Rubber Soul,”

He was born in Joliet, where he was raised and educated, attending Joliet Catholic (Class of ’62), and receiving a bachelor’s degree from Lewis University after serving his country in the U.S. Army.

Beloved husband and best friend of Phyllis (nee Doszak) for 48 years; loving father of David (Catherine) Scholtes, Christopher D. (Carrie) Scholtes, Mara (Joseph) Offermann and Bryan (Emily) Scholtes. Proud grandfather of Eva; Calvin, Jack, Will, Max, Thomas, Mariel, Maeve and Benjamin. Fond brother of Marianne Revels, James (Bev) Scholtes, Kay Zlogar and Eloise (Bill) Malinowski. He is survived by numerous extended family, along with treasured in-laws whom he considered fond family.

He was chief human resources officer for the Havi Group. Bill enjoyed with great humor his career and family life, and his greatest joy after retirement was spending every minute with his darling Phyllis.

He created a personal paradise in his yard, selecting his favorite trees and plants for him and Phyllis to enjoy. It was among these he received deep joy from watching his grandchildren play.

Delfina Vargas, (nee: Alanis) “Fina,” age 91, of Homer Glen, passed away peacefully, Monday, March 7, 2016, at Silver Cross Hospital.

Born in Houston, TX, living in the area most of her life. Retired from Nabisco Co. after many years of service. Fina was a loving wife, mom and grandma and her greatest joy was taking care of her family.

Preceded in death by her husband, David; and her parents, Gilbert and Jesusa (Morales) Alanis.

Survived by her loving children, David (Sue) Vargas, Martha (Richard) Schmitz, Gilbert Vargas, Theresa (Robert) Nowak and Elizabeth (Chuck) Kormaniak; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; a brother, Gilbert (Socorro) Alanis; and her sisters, Licha Lopez, Socorro (Pedro) Barrientos and Manuela (Henry) Jaimes. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Autism Speaks, Attn: Web Gift, 1060 State Road, Princeton, NJ, 08540, would be appreciated.

Federal claim alleges other harassment victims

SPRINGFIELD – A former state treasurer’s employee whose accusation of sexual harassment annihilated Dan Rutherford’s 2014 gubernatorial bid has named four others who allegedly complained of unwanted advances in an updated federal court filing.

Edmund Michalowksi’s February 2014 lawsuit during then-Treasurer Rutherford’s primary campaign for governor tanked his hopes as the most viable Republican alternative to eventual Gov. Bruce Rauner.

Rutherford denounced the suit as a political dirty trick, but two years later, Michalowski persists. Three of the names of alleged victims that surfaced in court late Tuesday match those in a Jan. 28, 2014, email from a Michalowski attorney obtained by The Associated Press under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. The email was disclosed last week after a two-year appeal in which the state’s public access counselor declared that the Rutherford administration had improperly withheld documents from AP in February 2014.

Teen gets probation for assaulting Sikh man

CHICAGO – A suburban Chicago teenager who punched and shouted racial slurs at a Sikh man last year was sentenced to two years’ probation on Wednesday after pleading guilty to a hate crime charge.

Investigators said the September incident happened during a road-rage incident in Darien. Under the plea agreement, the teen also was ordered to pay nearly $5,000 in restitution and perform 200 hours of community service – including time in the Sikh community – in exchange for prosecutors dropping felony aggravated battery charges, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Exonerated Ill. man wants his lawsuit sent to jury

TUSCOLA – An attorney for a man who was wrongfully convicted of murder in the death of a 22-year-old Illinois State University student argued in a Douglas County courtroom that a jury should hear claims that three Normal police officers, who have since retired, botched the investigation.

Alan Beaman of Rockford served 13 years in prison for the slaying of his ex-girlfriend, Jennifer Lockmiller, who was found strangled and stabbed in her Normal apartment in August 1993. His conviction was vacated by the Illinois Supreme Court after DNA evidence pointed to other suspects.

Morningstar CEO gives $35M to University of Chicago

CHICAGO – The CEO of Morningstar and his wife have donated $35 million to the University of Chicago.

The school made the announcement Wednesday, saying Joe Mansueto and his wife Rika’s gift will be used to launch the Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation. University officials said they will soon start searching for a director of the think tank. An opening date and location haven’t been set.

Ill. businessman gets more than 2 years for tax evasion

SPRINGFIELD – A Douglas County businessman was sentenced to more than two years in prison for failing to pay income tax.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Springfield said 49-year-old Lorenzo Shane Stewart of Tuscola was ordered Tuesday to serve two years and six months in prison and three years of supervised release. He also was ordered to pay more than $1.1 million in restitution to the IRS. Stewart pleaded guilty in August to two counts of income-tax evasion for failing to pay more than $1.1 million in income tax for 2008 and 2009. He admitted to putting his business, Ten Acres Excavating, under an employee’s name so he could operate and receive income from the business without claiming it on tax returns.

His prison sentence begins May 8.

Trump’s rivals seek points ahead of Illinois primary

LISLE – As the race for president shifted Wednesday to contests in Illinois and other big states, Donald Trump’s rivals were spending millions to try to blunt his momentum while other GOP candidates looked to put points on the board in a state that typically favors moderate Republicans.

The largest prizes next Tuesday will be winner-take-all primaries in Ohio and Florida, where the top vote-getter will leave with 66 and 99 delegates, respectively.

Illinois awards its 69 delegates through a twopronged vote. The statewide pick for president gets 15 delegates, and voters allot the remaining 54 by electing delegates in each congressional district who are aligned with a candidate.

So Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz could pick up delegates even if Trump, the billionaire businessman who’s leading statewide polls, wins Illinois’ presidential preference vote.

That’s bringing a flurry of campaigning to the area as Trump tries to widen his lead and the other Republicans argue they’re the strongest alternative to be the GOP nominee.

Kasich told hundreds of voters at town halls in Lisle and Palatine on Wednesday that he plans to remain positive as the race moves on to states where he says he’s in “basically a dead heat” with Trump and Cruz. He said the way he conducts himself on the campaign trail is an indication of how he’ll govern – by reaching out

to others, maybe even playing basketball with members of Congress.

“I refuse to get down in the mud to be elected president of the United States,” Kasich to huge applause from a crowd in Palatine. “You have to show respect to people.”

He also laid out plans to improve the economy by reducing regulations on businesses and cutting corporate taxes, and got a slap on the back from the CEO of Lisle-based Navistar, who said Kasich helped the truck manufacturing business grow in Ohio.

Cruz will speak Friday at an Illinois GOP fundraiser downtown Chicago and give the keynote speech at a party dinner in the northwest suburbs. Trump has scheduled an evening rally at the University of Illinois at Chicago, while Rubio has said he’s sticking around must-win Florida.

Beyond simply picking up delegates, doing well in Illinois also will send a message, said Republican U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, who’s backing Rubio.

“Whoever wins Illinois will be able to say they have the ability to win a blue state and a state in the Rust Belt,” Kinzinger said. “If somebody doesn’t get any delegates, that’s a big deal.”

On the Democratic side, both former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders have been running TV and radio ads in Illinois. Clinton, who has held a healthy lead in Illinois polling, is holding a getout-the-vote rally Thursday night in Vernon Hills. Sanders held events at two Illinois universities in recent weeks.

To the Editor: Regarding the March 2, 2016, article, “Will County Courthouse design plans debated,” where Will County Board member Cory Singer, R-Frankfort, argued there are too many unforeseen, much-needed road projects. There is also the fact that local governments will soon be forced to pick up the state’s financial obligations as Illinois digs itself into a deeper fiscal crisis, he argued.

“I strongly believe that there will be a day that we, or another board, will look back and regret this decision of spending this much money on a new facility,” Singer said. “We can’t overlook the fact that Will County remains in Illinois, unfortunately. ...

The state is completely and utterly broke.”

The poison in America’s bloodstream “[T]here might have been some slim hope of reviving Mrs. Mongar.”

So reads the scathing grand jury report of the trial of Kermit Gosnell, the Philadelphia abortionist whose clinic became known as a “house of horrors.”

Paramedics had arrived on the scene 20 minutes before, but, “because of the cluttered hallways and the padlocked emergency door,” they had trouble making their way through the building.

Mongar had a “weak pulse” when they did reach her.

The grand jury report in the case of Gosnell continued: “Doctors ... managed to keep her heart beating, but they never knew what they were trying to treat, because Gosnell and his staff lied about how much anesthesia they had given, and who had given it. By that point, there was no way to restore any neurological activity. Life support was removed the next day. Karnamaya Mongar was pronounced dead.”

Mongar was a refugee, recently arrived from a resettlement camp in Nepal. The grand jury report explains: “When she arrived at the clinic, Gosnell, as usual, was not there. Office workers had her sign various forms that she could not read, and then began doping her up. She received repeated unmonitored, unrecorded intravenous injections of Demerol, a sedative seldom used in recent years because of

At some point, she stopped breathing and when “employees finally noticed, Gosnell was called in and briefly attempted to give CPR.” His defibrillator was broken, “nor did he administer emergency medications that might have restarted her heart.”

While paramedics were called, “clinic staff hooked up machinery and rearranged her body to make it look like they had been in the midst of a routine, safe abortion procedure.”

These upsetting details are all worth reading and remembering because they happened in America, in 2009, and were scandalously underreported. We should bear the Gosnell story in mind whenever we are talking about abortion, women, inequality, or just about any of the most contentious issues of our day.

Roe v. Wade is the law of the land and restricting access to abortion amounts to a war on women, the argument goes.

But what if Roe v. Wade is the war on women?

What if manipulating words like

“choice” and “health” amounts to an assault on common sense and the common good and human rights?

What if we could all take a few steps back, remember Mongar, and think about healing and unity instead of bitterness and division?

That’s not happening in presidential politics right now, needless to say.

GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump has been saying that Planned Parenthood does good things. He’s not into the abortion, but otherwise he’s in their camp, he tells us. The problem with that is: Abortion is the poison in the bloodstream that keeps us from a healthy culture.

On the night of Super Tuesday, Hillary Clinton talked about the need for more “love” in America. She cannot do this compellingly without addressing the culture of death that has infected the American soul.

Abby Johnson knows abortion – she’s a former Planned Parenthood director in Texas.

“Abortion is a product that Planned Parenthood is selling,” she explains.

Planned Parenthood prioritizes establishing “relationships with people who are most likely to need an abortion down the line,” she explains.

Ramona Trevino, also formerly of Planned Parenthood, worries: “Vulnerable women will never receive

life-affirming options at a Planned Parenthood because there is no money to be made when women choose to parent or choose to place their child for adoption.”

Instead of propping up the abortion industry, as Trump’s comments do, Lila Rose, the president of the pro-life group Live Action, suggests: “There are over 13,000 clinics and hospitals across the country where women can go to get better, more comprehensive treatments that don’t kill children in the process.

That’s what our political leaders should be supporting, especially when taxpayer dollars are involved.”

We need not demonize Planned Parenthood. There are good people with good intentions who work at such clinics. But we also need not bolster what is a cultural and political behemoth. And we can’t forget that the state of Pennsylvania wound up overlooking complaints about a filthy clinic in an impoverished neighborhood that protected no one when a pregnant woman walked through its doors.

LOCKPORT – After giving up a nine-point lead, the Joliet West boys basketball team trailed, 31-30, and needed something special in the fourth quarter to beat rival Joliet Central in Wednesday’s Class 4A Lockport Sectional semifinal.

Tigers coach Nick DiForti pulled Teyvion Kirk and Trevian Bell to the side and told them the fourth quarter was going to be theirs.

Junior Tabyous Casterberry had a something different planned.

Casterberry was all over the floor, making plays for the Tigers (20-9).

West had been outrebounded and outhustled by Central, but Casterberry turned up the heat in the gym and scored seven of his team-high 11 points in the fourth quarter. Even more crucial for his team, he battled for four of his seven rebounds.

He also played a part in the biggest momentum shift of the game as West survived with a 47-44 victory.

Casterberry rebounded and passed the ball down the floor perfectly toward Bell, who dunked and made the crowd erupt.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that he’s also one of the most talkative players on defense.

“He’s our emotional leader for sure and he’s our biggest cheerleader,” DiForti said. “With that being said, he’s the ultimate teammate. When he gets us going like that, our fans feed off of that. Our coaching staff feeds off of that. When he’s quiet, something is wrong.

“A good basketball team communicates defensively. When you watch the NBA, they’re all barking and barking.

He’s obviously one of the loudest ones.

He leads us on the floor and even when he’s on the bench.”

we came back and got the momentum back. Even when we went back down by five or seven in the fourth quarter, we didn’t quit.”

West had beaten Central twice in SouthWest Suburban Blue play.

“Central is relentless,” DiForti said. “It absolutely helps us going into the Oswego game for having played this one.”

“Coming into the game we knew they would keep coming at us,” Kirk said of the Steelmen. “They had nothing to lose. After we made our run, they didn’t give up.”

Casterberry led West with 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Kirk scored 10 to go with seven boards.

Elijah Ward chipped in nine points and Bell had seven points and seven boards.

Central got 14 points and nine rebounds from Treveon Ward, who refused to allow an injured shoulder to

keep him off the court. Grubbs scored 12 points, including two big 3s to get the Steelmen back in the game in the third quarter, and nine boards. Fuller finished with eight points and 11 boards.

Neither team shot particularly well as Central finished at 31.1 percent on 14-of-45 shooting, and West settled for a 33 percent mark on 19 of 58. The Steelmen were 12 of 19 from the freethrow line and the Tigers 7 of 18. Central finished with a 38-37 rebounding edge.

“It’s a cliché, but we tried to tell the kids beating a team a third time is tough,” DiForti said. “Having it come in the sectional semifinal heightens the experience because it is Joliet Central.

“Our kids are still young. They don’t like to think that way, but at the same time we made some bad mistakes down the stretch.”

Momentum shifts with 9-0 spurt in fourth quarter

STREATOR – Peotone’s boys basketball team was hoping to capture its first sectional win Wednesday, and through three quarters, it was closing in on that accomplishment.

But Lincoln-Way West, which was focused on a sectional final rematch with Hillcrest, turned up the heat in the final quarter and that led to a decisive 9-0 run that shifted the momentum in its favor in the Class 3A Streator Sectional semifinals.

The Warriors turned a 31-27 deficit into a 36-31 advantage after holding the Blue Devils scoreless for the first 5:41 of the final period as they went on to capture a 44-35 victory to advance to Friday’s 7 p.m. sectional championship against the Hawks.

“They’re a really good team, and they’re the exact kind of team that gives us a lot of problems,” West coach Brian Flaherty said. “They’re big, long, physical and strong and they play hard defense inside the 3-point arc. That’s the type of team that has given us fits all year. So it’s a credit to them since they played hard, they’re smart and well-coached. They made it real difficult for us to get second looks at the basket or any kind of rhythm offensively.

“We had to try to generate some energy at the end. One of our game plans was to try to speed the game up and instead we were playing chess with them, which is what I didn’t want to do. When we sprung our pressure on them, that’s probably what we should have been doing from the beginning of the game as opposed to the end, but I was just too hesitant.”

The Blue Devils (23-7), who enjoyed their most victories since 1960, tied their largest lead of the night with three seconds left in the third quarter when Scott Gasik (nine points) hit his third 3-pointer of the period to give his team a 31-27 advantage.

But the Warriors (19-9) responded by turning up the defensive intensity in the final quarter, and it paid dividends by producing a 9-0 spurt. Marco Pettinato (21 points) scored three straight baskets and hit a free throw to start things and Jon Marotta (five

They’re 6-4 across the board, have guys who can shoot it and the whole team plays hard. So that’s hard to play against, especially when they have guys that big and we’re really not the biggest team.

We’ve practiced applying pressure and it paid off tonight.”

Peotone missed its first eight shots and turned the ball over six times to start the fourth quarter before Ryan Wenzel ended the drought with a rebound basket with 2:19 left to pull his team to within 36-33. But West answered with an old-fashioned three-point play

by Marotta that was set up by a great pass from Nolan Green, a free throw from Pettinato, two more from Cam Gavin (six points, eight rebounds) and another layup from Marotta.

“Scott hit some huge 3s and that gave them a little momentum, but we had to stay composed and get right back to it,” Marotta said. “Going into the fourth quarter, we knew that we had to pick it up on the defensive end and finish on the offensive end. So we came out and executed at the end and that sealed it for us.”

The first half was close throughout with the Warriors holding a pair of three-point leads and the Blue Devils a four-point advantage. Peotone was up 12-10 after one quarter and things were tied at 17 at halftime.

It was more of the same in the

third quarter with West going up 2723 after a pair of 3-pointers from Marotta, and Peotone responding with a rebound bucket from Wenzel, a trey from Kale Maupin (13 points, nine rebounds) and Gasik’s 3 to claim a fourpoint lead heading into the final eight minutes.

“We knew that West was going to make a run, and it was just a matter of when it was going to come,” Peotone coach Scott Maupin said. “Marotta hit those back-to-back 3s, and that’s probably what triggered it. And then they were able to go to their muscle game with Pettinato. We did an outstanding job by weathering a couple of storms earlier in the game.

“It’s not like us to shoot poorly like that and their 1-3-1 allowed us to shoot the 3-ball more than we wanted to. Credit to coach for sticking to what got them there. I was real proud of our toughness. At some spots we were outmanned or out-talented, but it didn’t matter to us. Our senior class has been outstanding for their whole careers.”

St. Francis rolling into nationals

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – St. Francis senior forward Ilya Ilyayev is the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

Part of the reason is his ability to finish games as strong as he starts them.

Or, maybe the credit for that goes to Saints coach Ryan Marks.

Marks has an uncanny feel for when he should substitute, and which combination of players belong on the floor at a given time. That may be among the most underrated reasons that CCAC South regular-season champion USF (28-3) is one of the four No. 1 seeds at the 32-team NAIA Division II National Tournament at the College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Missouri, outside Branson.

St. Francis, ranked No. 3 in the final coaches’ poll, plays in the final firstround game against York (Neb., 23-9) at 9:15 p.m. Thursday. And that’s if the game begins on time, which is unlikely.

The lateness of the hour should not be an issue for the Saints, however.

“Over the last eight years, the other 31 teams that have been No. 1 seeds have never tipped at 8:30 a.m or 9:15 p.m.,” Marks said. “But we seem to thrive on having to deal with other things.”

Whenever the game begin, Marks will go with his starters for a while, then will defer to his chess match, getting members of his deep bench in the game at the appropriate times. Ilyayev, for example, is averaging 30.4 minutes.

In most programs, a player of his ilk is on the court several more minutes than that.

“A player like Ilya is so highly productive in 28 to 30 minutes,” Marks said.

“He is rarely on the court fatigued.”

“We all make a joke that coach is a genius when it comes to basketball,” Ilyayev said. “He has a system where he knows who to put in when, who to put out there with whom, and we trust him 100 percent of the way.

“Some of the better players in our conference average 36 to 37 minutes. On our team, we don’t have to do that. It benefits everyone. I think that’s the big reason I feel I’m the same player at the end of a game that I am at the beginning.”

fouls that determine who plays when,” Marks said. “One thing is, I don’t believe in subbing for mistakes. I know a lot of very successful coaches do that, but I don’t. If a guy turns it over or takes a bad shot, I don’t want to take him out. I don’t want guys afraid to make mistakes.”

Senior center Jens Kennedy, a Dwight graduate, said Marks “has done a good job getting guys at all spots on the floor in position to where they can be successful.”

Of course, the players still must produce when opportunity knocks. Ilyayev averages 21.4 points, Kennedy 15.7 and Presniakovas 10.1. Three-point specialist Jo Jo Ballestero, Landus Anderson, Iain Morison and Jean Pietrzak put up between five and 10 points each. Ilyayev averages 8.1 rebounds, Kennedy 5.7 and Morison 4.6. Jake Raspopovich hands out 5.5 assists.

As a team, the Saints are shooting 48 Time share Edvinas Presniakovas, a senior percent from the floor, 38 percent from from Plainfield South, averages 27 min- beyond the arc and rank second in the utes. Nine other Saints log between 10 nation with a .780 mark from the freethrow line. Those numbers translate to and 23 minutes a night.

Last season, the Saints reached the national tournament for the third time and first since 1996. They dropped a 70-68 opening-round decision to St. Francis (Ind.) and still are searching for their first victory at the nationals.

“Obviously, we took a big step last year, getting a piece of the (CCAC) regular-season title and being in the national tournament for the first time in almost 20 years,” Marks said. “The reaction of our guys to playing there and losing a close game, it resonated with them. The work ethic over the summer was outstanding. They came back as improved players.”

Most members of the Saints’ top 10 or 11 were with the team a year ago.

“The last thing we did after last season is add a couple of guys who were cognizant of what we are trying to

do here,” Marks said. “We added the right guys who fit with the personality of the team, Landus (Anderson), of course, being one of them.”

Now that the Saints, who have not played since losing to Robert Morris on Feb. 27 in the CCAC Tournament semifinals, are a No. 1 seed at the nationals, the plan is to stay the course.

“We have to try to not do anything different,” Marks said. “We have to follow the blueprint we have used and has played out pretty well for us. We have to go in relaxed and play the brand of ball we are comfortable with.”

“It’s nice to be a top-four seed,” Kennedy said. “Our depth and cohesion have a lot to do with how we have played this year. The players we have coming off the bench would start for a lot of teams.”

Ilyayev said focus will determine the Saints’ success.

“The big thing for us will be to focus,” he said. “It’s a matter of everyone having more focus on their own roles. Then as a group we’ll have team focus. We can’t think a game ahead.

We have to concentrate on the task at hand.”

LAKE FOREST – The Bears boosted their defense by agreeing to a four-year contract with Super Bowl champion linebacker Danny Trevathan on Wednesday.

Trevathan’s signing was the first in a flurry of moves announced by the Bears shortly after the opening of free agency.

They also signed cornerback Tracy Porter and Arizona Cardinals right tackle Bobby Massie to three-year contracts. Backup running back Jacquizz Rodgers and offensive tackle Nick Becton also re-signed, agreeing to one-year deals.

Finke, Illinois cruise by Minnesota in Big Ten tournament

INDIANAPOLIS – Illinois freshman Michael Finke picked the perfect day to make a career-best five 3-pointers, scoring 17 points to lead No. 12 seed Illinois past 13th-seeded Minnesota, 85-52, on Wednesday in the Big Ten tournament first round.

“I made my first, and it felt great,” said Finke, who finished 5 of 7 from beyond the arc. “My teammates told me to keep shooting. It’s all mental, really.”

ST. LOUIS – Kevin Shattenkirk scored the decisive goal in the sixth round of the shootout to lift the St. Louis Blues to a 3-2 victory over the Blackhawks on Wednesday night for their fourth straight win.

David Backes and Troy Brouwer scored in the third period for the Blues and Jake Allen stopped 33 shots through overtime to earn his 22nd win of the season. Patrik Berglund and Troy Brouwer also had goals in the tiebreaker.

Andrew Ladd scored in the second period and Artemi Panarin tied it late in the third for the Hawks, who fell to 32-0-3 win leading after two periods. Corey Crawford had 28 saves.

Georgetown eliminates DePaul in first round of Big East tournament

NEW YORK – John Thompson III sounded like a coach whose team had just ended a six-game losing streak.

“Oh, man, it feels a lot better than losing,” he said after Georgetown beat DePaul, 70-53, in the first round of the Big East Tournament on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.

Eli Cain scored 14 points to lead the ninth-seeded Blue Demons, who end the season on a four-game losing streak. DePaul has lost eight of its past nine Big East Tournament games.

Lent in the Eastern Orthodox church begins March 14

JOLIET – Just a very quiet time.

That’s how Rebecca Grabavoy, 57, of Darien, and a lifelong member of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Joliet, describes the Great Fast, commonly known as Lent.

Lent in the Orthodox church is not simply refraining from certain foods, Grabavoy said, but exchanging distractions, such as parties, television and the radio, for an increase in spiritual reading, church services and charitable works, discreetly performed.

The focus is not on the acts themselves, but the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection, known as Easter in the western Christian churches and Pascha in the eastern ones, Grabavoy said.

“You look forward to it,” Grabavoy said. “It’s a cleansing period that makes Pascha more meaningful. It’s a journey every year and we travel through it. Pascha is the holiest of all holy days. This is what we live and believe and look forward to. It’s the center of our church life and Lent is preparation for it.”

For Eastern Orthodox Christians, Lent begins March 14 this year. The discrepancy in the starting date compared with Catholic and Protestant churches is due to the calendar used to calculate the date of Easter, said the Rev. Nikolaj Kostur, pastor of St. George Serbian Orthodox Church in Joliet.

According to the Diocese of Joliet, the First Ecumenical Council of Nicea in 325 decreed Easter would be celebrated the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring.

Western Christians, which include the Catholic and Protestant churches, use the newer Gregorian calendar to determine the date of Easter. The Orthodox Christians use the older Julian calendar, Kostur said.

Intense abstinence

Ash Wednesday doesn’t exist in the Orthodox church and fasting goes beyond not eating meat on Fridays. Traditional fasting guidelines in the Orthodox church include no meat, eggs, dairy products and – in some cases – even fish (as it’s considered “fleshy”) from the beginning of the Great Fast until Pascha,

Kostur said.

“By abstaining from certain physical foods, our being is lighter, so to speak,” Kostur said. “And that allows our soul to be lighter, too.”

Kostur recalled his first week of Great Fast as a seminarian. Church services occupied most of the day and lunch was light: boiled potatoes, along with tea and a slice of bread with honey.

“By the end of the first day, you’re hungry. By the end of the second day, you’re getting used to it,” Kostur said.

“By the third day, your thinking clears and you’re looking at your spiritual life more in-depth and concentrating on what’s important.”

Fasting precepts are guidelines, not strict rules, Kostur said. That’s especially true for the elderly, the sick, pregnant women and young children – although children are generally eager to follow their parents’ lead, he added.

In the Orthodox church, the Lenten season is also longer than in the Western church. It’s preceded by three weeks of preparation, Kostur said, and ends at the start of Holy Week. Dairy

foods disappear from the diet the week before Lent actually begins, he added.

Unique services and traditions

Instead of Stations of the Cross, the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is typically celebrated on Wednesday and Friday evenings, Kostur said. This service includes Communion that was consecrated the previous Sunday. Like Catholics, the Orthodox believe the bread and wine are the actual body and blood of Jesus.

“It’s not a hard burden,” Kostur said of fasting and of Lent. “It’s actually a joyful time.”

The Rev. Stephen Bithos, pastor at All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Joliet, said his church offers a compline service Monday, Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts on Wednesday and an acathist (hymn of praise) to the Theotokos (Greek for mother of God).

Then on Palm Sunday, Bithos said, the Greek church distributes bay leaves in addition to palms because the crowds laid both on the ground when Jesus entered Jerusalem, according to Greek

translations.

“They use pussy willows in Russia,” Bithos said, “because in Russia, there aren’t palms or bay leaves.”

For all its traditions, Lent is ultimately an opportunity for reflection – on our lives, our spirituality, Christ’s passion and resurrection – and renewed encouragement to take up our own cross and walk in Jesus’ footsteps, Bithos said.

“It brings meaning to our faith, it brings meaning to our lives,” Bithos said, “and instills a moral and ethical code within us.”

Because Troy belongs to the church’s choir, she spends much of Lent practicing the music for Holy Week services.

For Troy, the fasting, the music, the Lenten services and the Biblical readings the Orthodox prescribe are signposts to Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection, the foundation of Christianity, she said.

“It just gives you a good feeling about why you’re a Christian,” Troy said.

Online therapy in its infancy Dear Dr. K: I’ve been looking into cognitive behavioral therapy to help with my anxiety.

It would be convenient to do this therapy from home and, surprisingly, there seem to be many online CBT options. But would the therapy be less effective if I didn’t have a personal connection with an actual therapist?

Dear Reader: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) attempts to correct ingrained patterns of negative thoughts and behaviors. It’s an effective treatment for depression, anxiety and other behavioral health problems. It also is widely used to help people with chronic diseases cope with that burden.

Face-to-face visits with a therapist can be inconvenient and may be expensive (depending on your insurance). And there are online CBT options. But the question is: Are they effective?

I spoke to my colleague Dr. James Cartreine, a licensed clinical psychologist and a researcher at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He pointed out because these online programs are relatively new, there are only a few evaluations of how effective they are. He noted a team of researchers recently reviewed five well-designed studies comparing online CBT to face-to-face visits with clinicians providing CBT. The patients all were working-age adults being treated for social anxiety or panic disorder.

All of the online therapies delivered treatment through written content. Some programs added text-messaging and discussion forums. Most also involved some communication with a mental health clinician, usually a psychologist, over email or private messaging systems. This could be quite limited, however. In one study, psychologists were limited to spending only 10 minutes a week on each patient. Finally, most included homework assignments that

All treatment groups, both face-to-face and online CBT, had significantly improved symptoms. One study found better outcomes for the online treatment. The others found equal results between the two types.

While these results are encouraging for people who are interested in online CBT, I’d emphasize they are not conclusive. First of all, five small studies do not provide a lot of evidence. Furthermore, researchers tend to submit studies with a positive result for publication. They don’t always seek to publish, and journal editors often don’t want to publish, studies showing treatment was ineffective.

More important, CBT is not one thing.

What I mean is a pill is a pill, whichever doctor has prescribed it. But CBT is a treatment that is practiced differently by different therapists, and those therapists are not all equally skilled. So it’s hard to know from published studies whether the particular online CBT program you are interested in will be effective.

I’m not knocking online CBT; I’m just saying it is in its infancy. I hope most online CBT programs prove to be effective.

They not only are more convenient for the people who use them, they also require less time on the part of the therapists.

That would allow therapists to offer treatment to more people.

Dear Abby: I’ve DEAR ABBY been estranged from my three Jeanne siblings, their Phillips spouses and their families for 35 years – my choice. There has been no correspondence, and I have seen them only at our parents’ funerals.

Since we are all in our 80s, I anticipate there will be funerals for us in the next decade. If I go first, there is no problem. However, I’m considering not attending their funerals or those of their spouses. My grown children say I must attend because I’m their brother. I’m concerned I might be a distraction or there could be a confrontation. Besides, I still remember what caused my estrangement and I just don’t want to see them. I know I’m stubborn, but am I wrong? – To Go Or Not To Go Dear Go Or No: I disagree with your children.

People attend funerals to pay their respects to the deceased and/or comfort the family who has suffered the loss. If, after 35 years, you show up at the funeral, you could, indeed, be a distraction – unless it has been so long nobody recognizes you.

Dear Abby: Is it wrong to have no interest in grandchildren? My wife is five years older than I am, and she’s elated with our new grandchild.

I’m only 42, and I feel I’m too young to be a “Gramps.” I prefer to be free from kid activities and enjoy my adult pursuits.

Look at the West and North hands. West leads the heart ace against four spades. After East signals with the eight, how should West plan the defense?

North’s two-heart cue-bid showed at least 5-5 in spades and either minor. South’s jump to game was a tad aggressive.

Since the heart eight must be a singleton or the higher card from a doubleton, West cashes his heart queen, to which everyone follows.

What next?

West must hope that his side can score two trump tricks. It is time for him to continue with a low heart. Then he has to hope that East realizes it cannot cost to ruff with the spade queen. You see the effect: When South overruffs with his spade ace, it promotes two trump tricks for West.

East should see what is required, because if South had a third heart, West would have cashed his heart king at trick three. (This was the key point behind leading the queen, not the king, at trick two.)

Lastly, note that if North had been the declarer, this defense would have been much harder to find.

This Agreement contains no provisions for prize fulfillment which may arise from any causes other than for reimbursement of the specified Prize Value.

The aggregate liability of SUREBET shall be limited to the sums payable under the terms contained herein.

EVENT DESCRIPTOR FORM - CONTRACT TERMS AND CONDITIONS SUREBET agrees to reimburse the Client/Member, for whose exclusive benefit this agreement is made, up to the specified maximum prize limit if an eligible contestant successfully completes the said promotion on the date(s) and at the location specified. Such payment obligation shall be subject to the full compliance with the Official Rules, Terms, and Conditions contained herein.
