Joliet police’s increased presence didn’t deter Joliet West shooting

vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Extra police were hired by Joliet Township High School District 204 for the crosstown basketball game Friday night at Joliet West High School – a sporting event where shots were fired in the parking lot after the game.

No one was injured in the shooting incident at the school, located in the 400 block of Larkin Avenue. Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said Monday afternoon that police have very little information and haven’t identified any suspects.

JTHS Superintendent Cheryl McCarthy said Monday that the extra police were hired by the district in anticipation of a larger crowd at the game, according to normal procedure. That included two police squad cars engaged around the building the entire night, she said. “[The additional police presence]

didn’t deter whatever happened,” McCarthy said.

School district spokeswoman Kristine Schlismann said eight officers and one supervisor were hired for the game.

Benton said there were no officers assigned specifically to the parking lot. But the officers inside the high school during the event noticed no altercations or conflicts to indicate a problem.

Officers typically patrol the event, and file out into the parking lot when people start leaving, Benton said.

On Friday, officers were in the parking lot within earshot of where the shooting occurred, which was away from the field house and closer to the cafeteria area.

“By the time they made it over there, the subject had fled,” Benton said. “All we got was that he was a male, black.

They tried to track him down, but they were unable to locate anybody in that

time before the altercation was over.”

Quiet, guarded schools

Benton said security will continue to remain on alert for both high schools through the rest of the week, with metal detection and an increased police presence. Benton noted that there were no incidents at school dances over the weekend at the two high schools.

As of Monday afternoon, no students or parents have come forward with information about the shooting, McCarthy said.

“It’s been super quiet, which means, I think, our kids don’t really know what went on,” McCarthy said. “Kids usually talk, and they usually talk fast. That’s not happening in this case.”

McCarthy said it was still important for parents to ask their kids about if they have any information. She also advised concerned parents should call their high school principal with any questions.

Joliet Central administrator switches positions

At a special board meeting Monday, the board approved transferring Jennifer Webb-Rea from her current position as a Central High School assistant princi-

pal to a classroom teacher for the 2016-17 school year.

Superintendent Cheryl McCarthy said the change in position was made at Webb-Rea’s request.

Board President Jeff Pierson and board members Don Dickinson, Arlene Albert, R. Dale Evans Sr., Tyler Marcum and David Skorupa voted in favor of the request.

McCarthy said District 204 is undergoing a busy period in preparing for the next school year.

She said the board throughout year and potentially this summer will have special board meetings to approve personnel matters in an efficient manner, she said.

Disability advocacy group urges young people to register, vote in election

JOLIET – Monday marked a significant milestone for 19-year-old Michelle Marusak.

As a student at Lockport Township District 205’s Career and Community Connections program, the 19-year-old student with disabilities cast a vote in an election for the very first time.

“It’s cool. My mom is always telling me to vote,” a smiling Marusak said.

Marusak was among the two dozen or so students with disabilities from Lockport Township District 205 or Joliet Township District 204 transition programs who participated Monday in a field trip to the Will County Clerk’s Office.

Joliet council to vote on train station bid

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet again has the goahead to build a new train station.

The City Council is slated to vote Tuesday on a $16 million contract with Walsh Construction to build the station and a new platform for the Heritage Corridor train.

The price has gone up $400,000 since the state put the brakes on the project in the summer.

Walsh was the low bidder at $15.6 million when bids were opened in June.

There were only two bids, and the other bid was $16.8 million.

City Manager Jim Hock used the word “finally” when he told the council at a workshop meeting Monday that the project is ready to move forward.

“We do have verbal approval from [Illinois Department of Transportation] that they will approve this,” Hock said.

The project was put on hold when IDOT raised concerns that not enough money was left to pay for both the train station and a Pace bus station. The price for the entire transportation center has gone from an original budget of $42 million to $50 million. The state has final say-so on bids because it has $30 million in the project, which has also included a realignment of train tracks downtown.

City officials spent a half-year convincing state officials to allow Joliet to

build the train station now and the bus station later when it finds more funding.

In the meantime, Walsh Construction has lost a couple of subcontractors and the price of steel has gone up, increasing the price. That delayed the bid award for another month.

The price increase could have been worse, Lisa Dorothy, project manager for Joliet, told the City Council Public Service Committee, which reviewed the bid Monday before the full council meeting.

the job was going to cost an additional $1.3 million, Dorothy said. But Walsh negotiated them down.

Dorothy suggested moving ahead with the Walsh bid.

“Our only option would be to go out for bids again, and we’d run the risk of the bids being significantly higher,” she said.

Walsh already has told city officials that it would not bid again, since its bid is already known, Dorothy said.

Councilman Jim McFarland, who chairs the Public Service Committee, said he thinks “the city was sold a bag of goods” when it got the initial estimates on the project’s cost. Still, he added, there was no turning back.

The old train station, Union Station, was shut down in September 2014 when Metra commuter platforms were moved to the others side of the tracks where the new train station will be built.

“There’s no way we could stop this mid-project,” McFarland said.

Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – More than 200 people from various Joliet entities came Monday afternoon to meet Theresa Rouse, a finalist for the Joliet Public Schools District 86 superintendent post, during a reception held at the district’s J.F. Kennedy Administrative Center in Joliet.

Rouse was chosen as a finalist out of the 59 candidates who applied to replace Superintendent Charles E. Coleman, who retires July 1. District 86 spokeswoman Sandy Zalewski has previously said Rouse is one of the four candidates board inspectors are considering to succeed Coleman.

“This reception is overwhelming in a good way. It’s good to have exposure to district employees, parents and the community as a whole,” Rouse said.

District Board of School Inspectors President Gwendolyn Ulmer said this reception was designed to give the community a voice on the new superintendent choice and to maker her feel comfortable with the community and vice versa. Ulmer said the board put together a comment box and cards for those who attended the reception to give feedback or ask questions concerning the process, but the selection will be made soon.

Rouse is the superintendent at King City Union School District in King City, California, and before that worked for

five years at Santa Cruz County Office of Education in California. Rouse grew up in Indiana, but has lived in California since 1996.

“What attracted me to this position was the location. My family lives three hours away in Indiana, so it’s nice to be close to siblings and their children,” Rouse said.

District 86 used Ray and Associates

Inc. of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for its superintendent search. Rouse had multiple phone screens and has flown to Joliet three times for interviews.

Rouse said she feels that this district would be a good fit due to her background in K-8 schools, knowledge of alternative settings for children, familiarity with Common Core and online tests and her strength in instruction and curriculum.

“This decision is a two-way street,” Rouse said, adding a decision would depend on if she fit with the district and she wanted to work with the district. “I won’t know specific plans about changes in the district until I have my boots on the ground, but the board has given me ideas and we have had conversations about how to take the district to the next level.”

Lincoln-Way D-210 ruling expected Friday Will County judge heard arguments from both parties Monday

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Will County judge might rule Friday on Lincoln-Way High School District 210 attorneys’ motion to dismiss a lawsuit that would prevent the closing of one of the district’s four academic buildings.

Will County Judge Roger Rickmon heard arguments Monday from the district’s attorneys and an attorney representing Lincoln-Way Taxpayers Unite, a citizens’ group suing the district to prevent the closing of North high school or any other school.

The Board of Education decided in a 5-2 vote in August to close North to help resolve its financial crisis.

When LWATU and 25 other plaintiffs filed a complaint Dec. 29 to prevent the closing of a school, Lincoln-Way’s attorneys filed a motion to dismiss it.

After hearing the attorneys’ arguments, Rickmon said he would take it under advisement and he might make a ruling on the case Friday.

Most of the plaintiffs and other LWATU supporters packed Rickmon’s small courtroom inside and out. Many of them wore stickers on their chest that said “I support LWATU.”

“I’m very hopeful,” said Liz Sands, LWATU founder. “The judge is taking this very seriously. He is considering what we said and what [Lincoln-Way’s attorneys] said, and that’s all we can ask for.”

Lincoln-Way’s attorneys have argued the board’s decision to close North is not reviewable by court as a matter of law and seek dismissal of the allegation from LWATU that board member Christopher Kosel was unqualified to move for a vote on closing North.

LWATU’s attorney Stephen Eberhardt has said the board’s decision is subject to judicial review, and cited two previous court cases that he argues provide a road map for the court to resolve issues of the citizen group’s lawsuit.

After Rickmon made his decision to take the case under advisement, Eberhardt met with a crowd of LWATU supporters outside the Will County courthouse to answer questions on the case.

Some of them chanted afterwards “Central, East, North and West! All four schools are the best!”

In anticipation of Monday’s court hearing, LWATU supporters held a rally in Frankfort Sunday called the “Save Our Schools” rally.

Student driver hits two other students at Plainfield South on Monday morning

vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – A student driving to school hit two other students Monday morning in the Plainfield South High School parking lot.

The two students who were hit, a 16-year-old boy and girl, sustained minor injuries and were conscious, speaking with their parents before they were taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said. Plainfield South High School is in Joliet.

The accident occurred at 6:55 a.m., and the injured students were met at

the hospital by their parents, Plainfield School District 202 spokesman Tom Hernandez said.

The 17-year-old was reportedly driving slowly through the parking lot, when he turned at a slow speed, Benton said.

“As he turned one of the corners, he swerved out of the way of another vehicle and hit the 16-year-old boy in the hand,” Benton said. The boy either lunged or fell backward, knocking the girl over.

Benton said that because the incident occurred on private property, no tickets were issued. However, the names of all involved were documented.

Joliet Fire Department Capt. Vic Stachelski said the fire was reported about 4 p.m. at a single-family house in the 1200 block of Devonshire Drive.

One man was home when the fire began but was able to escape before crew arrived. Stachelski said the fire was brought under control within 10 minutes.

“There’s still some investigation [to do], but it appears a bird’s nest in the chimney was what started it,” he said.

JOLIET – A Berwyn man was convicted for a second time Friday of breaking into a Romeoville woman’s bedroom and raping her in 2010.

Jurors deliberated for about three-and-a-half hours before Alejandro Reveles, 36, was convicted on charges of criminal sexual assault and home invasion. He was found not guilty of domestic battery.

Reveles was found guilty of the same charges four years ago and sentenced to 20 years in prison, but the case was sent back when an appellate court ruled he should not have been asked about his prior convictions from more than 10 years earlier.

Reveles and the 36-year-old victim were in a 15-year relationship, but it had ended by October 2010 when she obtained an order of protection against him, according to court records. The victim was showering for a date Nov. 20, 2010, when Reveles came in a sexually assaulted her, according to trial testimony.

Reveles stopped when he saw a neighbor was calling the victim’s cellphone and the victim told him the neighbor was aware of the order of protection.

Reveles is scheduled for a sentencing hearing in May.

JOLIET – A psychiatrist testified Monday he believes a Joliet man attacked his girlfriend with a knife because of the side effects of medication he was taking to treat depression and anxiety.

Bradley M. Schlott, 48, is facing attempted murder charges for the March 12, 2009, attack on Kimberly Hur- Bradley M. schik, which stemmed Schlott from ongoing arguments regarding Hurschik’s relationship with a co-worker, according to trial testimony.

Schlott lost his job in late 2008 and in early 2009 he was prescribed a generic form of Wellbutrin that was later pulled from the market because of side effects, Dr. Robert GalatzerLevy, a psychiatrist who interviewed Schlott and reviewed police reports, testified Monday.

“He was prescribed 300 milligrams to start, which greatly increased the

Schlott called 911 and reported the stabbing and need for an ambulance but hung up when the dispatcher asked for his name. Hurschik then told Schlott to get rid of the knife and called 911 herself.

Under cross-examination by Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Tricia McKenna, Galatzer-Levy said he’d been paid approximately $20,000 to review the case for the defense.

The psychiatrist said letters Schlott had written in a notebook that Hurschik found after his arrest did not factor into his opinion. A letter to Hurschik’s parents asks them to consider giving proceeds from some of the assets in her name to Schlott’s sons.

Galatzer-Levy said that may have been another expression of Schlott’s thoughts of suicide.

The trial will continue Tuesday and is expected to finish Wednesday.

Wintry mix Tuesday could impact Kendall, Will, Grundy counties

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will and Grundy counties are expected to be slightly affected by a storm anticipated to pass early Tuesday through northern Illinois.

Although the worst of the storm is forecasted to hit the Wisconsin border area – as well as Lake and northern Cook counties – a mixture of rain, sleet and snow could impact commutes Tuesday morning throughout the Chicago area.

“There’s a batch of modest precipitation that’ll come through about 3 to 6 a.m. Tuesday,” National Weather Service meteorologist Kevin Donofrio said. “It may start as a mix of rain or sleet, but cold air will surge in the morning.”

Donofrio said whether the precipitation sticks is dependent upon the surface temperature, which may still be above freezing because of the recent warm temperatures. The storm is being caused by a strong cold front that will “park itself in our area” followed by low pressure.

“The highest impact would be from 4 to 5 a.m. until 9 or 10 a.m.,” Donofrio said. “There may be some lingering light snow after that.”

The type of precipitation hinges on how much the temperature drops.

Temperatures Monday were expected to hit the mid-50s with overnight lows in the upper-20s. Highs Tuesday are expected to reach the low 30s.

“A couple degrees makes all the difference,” Donofrio said. “With the old surge in the a.m. period, however,

Plainfield man dies Monday after Route 126 off-road collision

vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – A Plainfield driver died Monday morning after his vehicle collided with a parked car early.

Harold Fite, 45, was pronounced dead at 5:33 a.m. in Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, according to Kane County Chief Deputy Coroner Loren Carrera.

According to a preliminary investigation by state police, Fite was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Impala east on Route 126 a half-mile east of County Line Road when, for unknown reasons, his vehicle headed off the south side of the roadway and struck a 1999 Ford F150

parked in the driveway of a residence on the 26000 block of West Route 126 in Plainfield.

No one was in the truck at the time of the accident, and there were no other passengers in the Impala at the time of the crash, which was at 4:41 a.m., according to a state police news release. “[Fite] was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased,” the news release states.

Carrera said the cause of death is pending an autopsy Wednesday and toxicology reports.

Joliet Fire Department Lt. Fred Offermann said “heavy fire was showing through the first-floor roof” when crews arrived at 11:50 a.m. in the 600 block of Big Timber Drive.

One person had been in the unit and was transported to the hospital as a precaution, according to fire reports.

“The roof above the kitchen suffered major damage,” Offermann noted “The cause [of the fire] is under investigation, but it does not appear suspicious.”

Firefighters were at the scene for an hour-and-a-half. The three units were left uninhabitable by the damage.

“This was her space,” said Russell inside the school’s library. “She took care of her space.”

Volk, who died Christmas Day, was the second of three librarians in the history of Gompers. She served in the position from 1976 until 2010, when she re- Mary Volk tired.

“She was a unique person with many interests, but I would say her No. 1 interest was this school library,” Russell said.

The school decided to honor Volk with the creation of a fund to gather money to go toward purchasing books for the library.

Called the Mary Volk Memorial Fund, it adds books to a library Volk loved so much, Russell said. As of last week, the fund had collected about $1,145.

Gompers’ current librarian, Jennifer Vinikour, said 200 books were bought for the library thanks to the

Joseph R. Grobarcik, 75, of New Lenox, passed away Sunday, Feb. 28, 2016, at Silver Cross Hospital. He was born on March 12, 1940, to the late Joseph and Victoria (nee Jankola). Joe was a graduate of Joliet Catholic High School.

He was the owner of Holladay Plumbing from which was retired. He was an avid fisherman and a longtime member of Lunkers Unlimited.

Survived by his wife, Kay (nee Rohats); daughters, Amy Grobarcik and Jodi Grobarcik; a granddaughter, Selena Gaytan; a sister, Rosemary (Don) Heyden; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Diabetes Association would be appreciated.

Barbara K. Hostert, passed peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus. She will be missed dearly by her family and many friends.

Left to mourn her passing are her special stepmother, Sally Hostert; her brothers, Allan (Beth) Hostert and David (Cindy) Hostert; nieces, Megan (Marc) Bucklin, Ashleigh (Justin) Velasquez, Heather (Craig) Whitney; nephew, Nick (Samantha) Hostert; and two great-nephews, Robbie Whitney and Abraham Hostert. She will also be missed by her stepfamily, Tom (Linda) Feutz, Gigi (Wayne) Christensen, Kathy (Paul) Eikedahl, Janet (Ted) Ziegler, Peggy (John) Ryan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Eleanor and Charles Hostert of Mokena.

Barb was a proud Mokena resident for most of her life. After graduating from Lincoln-Way Central in 1974, she traveled with the professional women’s basketball team, The All-American Red Heads. She and her teammates were recognized for pioneering women’s basketball by induction in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012. Barb loved the game and her experience with the team. She also played for the Milwaukee Does in the WBL. She was employed by Mobil in Frankfort where she rose through the ranks to management. She spent many happy years there, until her M.S. forced early retirement. Barb met the challenges of dealing with M.S. with great courage and grace. She met each new physical decline with determination and a fighting spirit for 25 years.

M.S. eventually took her body, but could never defeat her fighting spirit.

The family would like to thank all of you who tried to make her life more bearable. All the many acts of kindness, big and small, were greatly appreciated.

James Lissy, age 76, of Morris, passed away peacefully in his home on Feb. 28, 2016, with his loving family gathered around him.

Born Sept. 20, 1939, in Braceville, to the late Anton and Marjorie (nee Broucek) Lissy. Jim graduated from Gardner-South Wilmington High School Class of 1957. Prior to active duty, Jim worked on his family’s farm in Braceville. After returning home from serving his country as a sergeant in the U.S. Army, Jim owned and operated Jim’s Enco Station in Gardner, was a member of the Carpenters/Millwrite Local 1092 and owned and operated Lissy’s Polaris with his wife. In 2002, he retired after 30 years to spend time with his beautiful wife and family to enjoy the outdoors. Jim was an avid gardener, fisherman, bird-watcher and beekeeper.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and nephew, David.

Surviving are his loving wife, Mary (nee Lawhorn); children, Jeanette (Joe) Puckett of Sacramento, CA, Robert Lissy of Janesville, WI, Donald (Ellen) Lissy of Morris and Kris (Kevin) Simpson of Coal City; sister and brothers, Carol (Billy) Pohl of Gardner, Leroy (Kathy) Lissy and Raymond (Kathy) Lissy, both of Braceville; his best friend and cousin, Gary Lissy Sr.; friend, Glenn Mattes; grandchildren, David (Katrina) Boero, Joseph Puckett, Justin Puckett, Sarah Lissy and Emily Lissy; sisters and brothers-in-law, Faye Chandonia, Nora (Jeff) Allen, George (Kay) Lawhorn and Bud Lawhorn; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and many wonderful friends that he shared his lifetime with.

She was a senior analyst for Verizon and a member of the Dale A.C. in Rockdale.

Three grandchildren, Carla and Nicholas Swinke, Natalie (Anthony) Merkel. Five great-grandchildren, Samantha, Henry, Josiah, Charlotte and Caleb Merkel. Two sisters, Virginia Gigliette and Josephine (Richard-dec.); and a brother, Joseph (Jean-dec.) Giglietti. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Actor George Kennedy dies at 91

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – George Kennedy, the hulking, tough-guy character actor who won an Academy Award for his portrayal of a savage chain-gang convict in the 1960s classic “Cool Hand Luke,” has died.

His grandson Cory Schenkel says Kennedy died Sunday morning of old age in Boise, Idaho. He was 91.

He had undergone emergency triple bypass surgery in 2002. That same year, he and his late wife moved to Idaho to be closer to their daughter and her family, although he still was involved in occasional film projects.

His biggest acting achievement came in “Cool Hand Luke,” a 1967 film about a rebellious war hero played by Paul New-

man who is bent on bucking the system as a prisoner on a Southern chain gang.

Its theme of rebelling against authority and the establishment helped make it one of the most important films of the tumultuous 1960s.

Kennedy played the role of Dragline, the chain-gang boss who goes from Luke’s No. 1 nemesis to his biggest disciple as Newman’s character takes on folk hero status among fellow inmates. The movie garnered four Academy Award nominations, and Kennedy was named best supporting actor.

Newman and Kennedy provided a spectacular one-two punch – Luke as the reticent anti-hero, Dragline as an illiterate brute. They shared several memorable scenes, including one in which Kennedy’s character wins a bet by getting Luke to eat 50 eggs in an

hour.

After the critical and commercial success of “Cool Hand Luke,” Kennedy carved out a niche as one of Hollywood’s most recognizable supporting actors.

He had parts in several action flicks in the 1970s, played Leslie Nielsen’s sidekick in the “Naked Gun” spoofs and was J.R. Ewing’s business rival in the final seasons of “Dallas.”

Kennedy said his acting ambitions were cemented when he was a young child.

“I remember listening to a radio program when I was young and it made me feel good and I remember telling my mom that I wanted to make people feel the way this radio program made me feel,” Kennedy said in 1995.

“I got some great breaks, and I wound up being an actor.”

It’s so important to get registered and to vote in all elections,” Schultz Voots said. “I thought why not take advantage of coming to ... the county clerk’s office because voting is going on right now. CHICAGO – Gov. Bruce Rauner unloaded some of his harshest criticism yet of House Speaker Michael Madigan on Monday, saying the Chicago Democrat is prolonging a higher education funding crisis for political gain, has threatened university leaders who might stand with the Republican governor on a fix and has “spies in most organizations” who report back if anyone steps out of line.

“Political games are being put ahead of student lives and we’ve got to stop this,” the Republican said, adding that Madigan is trying to Bruce “spin” the issue ahead of Rauner the March 15 primary.

The comments prompted some laughter and a sharp response from Madigan spokesman Steve Brown, who noted Rauner last year proposed cutting the higher education budget by 30 percent then vetoed a budget bill to fund colleges and universities. More recently Rauner vetoed a measure to fund grants to help students pay tuition, saying it would “explode the state budget.”

Representatives from two of the three universities that Rauner claimed had been threatened also denied that Madigan or his office had done so.

“Sounds like the governor’s getting a little wobbly on us,” Brown said. “He’s under a lot of pressure because he’s wrecking higher education.”

The exchange comes as colleges and their students are struggling to pay their bills amid a months-long state budget stalemate and are looking for help from lawmakers, who return Tuesday to Springfield.

Madigan is expected to try to override Rauner’s veto on the bill to fund the Monetary Assistance Program grants.

While it’s not clear Madigan has the votes, putting the question on the board would require Republican lawmakers to push a button – potentially getting them on the record as not supporting a politically popular program.

Rauner is calling on Madigan to instead allow a vote on legislation sponsored by state Rep. Ken Dunkin, a Chicago Democrat who has bucked his party to side with the governor on some big issues. The bill would provide $40 million to community colleges and $160 million to financially teetering colleges and universities such as Chicago State and Northeastern Illinois.

The money comes from dollars that lawmakers borrowed from special state accounts last year. They’re required to pay the money back this year, but wouldn’t have to do so if the measure passes. Rauner said that’s not ideal, but called it a short-term solution aimed at averting a major crisis at Chicago State, which has said it may not have enough money to finish out the school year.

Brown said Madigan opposes Dunkin’s measure in part because it would take money from other vital programs, such as local school construction.

Rauner had hoped to have representatives from the colleges join him for his Monday news conference, but said three – Chicago State, Northeastern and Eastern Illinois universities – declined.

He said they indicated they’d been told

by Madigan’s office not to support any measure that hasn’t been “blessed” by the speaker before the election.

“I haven’t verified this directly but I have good sources,” Rauner said.

Mike Hines, director of public relations for Northeastern Illinois, said President Sharon Hahs declined the invite on guidance from the Board of Trustees, which said officials should remain neutral on legislation at least until it’s assigned to a committee.

“Northeastern Illinois University has received no instructions on any topic from Speaker Michael Madigan or his office,” Hines said.

Chicago State issued a statement saying its Board of Trustees’ official position is not to participate in news conferences in the midst of an election.

“At no point have any CSU officials had conversations with any of the four legislative leaders that included direction about which bills to support or not support,” it said.

CHICAGO – A federal judge in Chicago has struck down as unconstitutional an Illinois law requiring any small political party to field a full slate of candidates in a district before any one of its candidates can get on the ballot.

Judge Andrea Wood’s order Monday permanently bars Illinois from enforcing the law. The decision stems from a lawsuit filed by the Libertarian Party in Illinois.

Plaintiffs’ attorney David Schoen said Wood is taking a stand against a nationwide tendency of established parties to erect barriers against small ones.

County election districts typically have the most seats up for election, from clerks to coroners. Finding a candidate for each has been hard for small parties.

With the law Illinois struck down, more parties should appear on county ballots in November’s general election.

Court won’t hear appeal over anti-panhandling ban

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court has turned down an appeal from Springfield officials seeking to reinstate an ordinance that banned panhandling in the city’s downtown historic district.

The justices Monday let stand an appeals court ruling that said the city’s ban was unconstitutional.

The ordinance defined panhandling as a verbal request for the immediate donation of money. A federal appeals court ruled last year that the ban infringed on free speech rights.

The city argued that the anti-panhandling ordinance was meant to regulate the behavior of panhandlers but not their message. The case is City of Springfield v. Don Norton, 15-727.

Pekin police arrest man in connection with bomb

PEKIN – A man has been arrested in connection with a pipe bomb that exploded under a bridge over the Illinois River in central Illinois.

A news release from the Pekin Police Department said 26-year-old Marc A. McCulley of Pekin was arrested early Sunday after police received a tip on the department’s Facebook page.

The (Peoria) Journal Star reported that McCulley is charged with possession of explosives or incendiary devices, disorderly conduct and reckless conduct.

He’s being held in Tazewell County’s jail.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether he has an attorney.

The device detonated Friday under the Pekin Bridge. Police said no one was injured and the bridge wasn’t significantly damaged.

The FBI and the Illinois State Police plan to continue investigating the incident.

Chicago Public Schools announces layoff of 62

CHICAGO – Chicago Public Schools has announced the layoff of 62 employees, 17 of them teachers, citing its efforts to stabilize its finances by eliminating $85 million from school budgets.

In announcing Monday’s move, the school district said 43 full-time and 19 part-time employees were laid off.

Chicago schools CEO Forrest Claypool said the fact the cuts are needed is unfortunate for the district’s students, principals and teachers.

newly released records indicate that Thornton Township spent the money on radio and newspaper ads aimed predominantly at African-American audiences around the Chicago market.

The advertising campaign came after a $46,000 taxpayer-funded trip to South Carolina in September taken by township Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli and 14 other officials.

The township’s ads argue that the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston deserves the award because of its peaceful response to the killing of nine black parishioners.

The ads direct people to sign an online petition to support the effort.

Critics said the money could’ve been better spent in Thornton Township.

HAMILTON, Ohio – A 14-year-old boy pulled out a gun in a school cafeteria Monday and opened fire, hitting two students, and then ran from the school, threw the weapon down and was apprehended nearby with the help of a police dog, authorities said.

Two other Madison Local Schools students also were injured, possibly from shrapnel or while running away. None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening, said Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones.

Jones said the 14-year-old was a student and there was a motive to the shooting that he did not identify. The boy was charged preliminarily with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of felonious assault, inducing panic and making terrorist threats, Jones said.

Students were eating in the cafeteria when the shooting happened around 11:30 a.m., Jones said. Afterward, classmates described a chaotic scene where they weren’t sure what was happening at first. Some students fled outside.

GOP badly split as Trump seeks Super Tuesday wins The ASSOCIATED PRESS VALDOSTA, Ga. – On the eve of Super Tuesday’s crucial primaries, a sharp new divide erupted between Republicans who pledge to fall in line behind Donald Trump if he wins their party’s nomination and others who insist they can never back the bombastic billionaire.

The fissure could have major implications beyond the primaries, exposing the looming challenges in uniting the party after the election, no matter who wins.

Nebraska’s Ben Sasse, a rising star among conservatives, became the first current senator to publicly raise the prospect of backing a third party option if Trump clinches the nomination. In a letter posted on Facebook late Sunday, Sasse urged Republicans to consider whether a party led by Trump would still represent their interests.

“If our party is no longer working for the things we believe in – like defending the sanctity of life, stopping Obamacare, protecting the Second Amendment, etc. – then people of good conscience should stop supporting that party until it is reformed,” he wrote.

The Associated Press asked Republican senators and governors across the country if they would support Trump if he secured the nomination. Just fewer than half of those who responded would not commit to backing him, foreshadowing a potentially extraordinary break this fall.

“I am increasingly concerned by Donald Trump’s statements and behavior, and I have serious concerns about his ability to win the general election and provide presidential lead-

ership,” Indiana Sen. Dan Coats said in a statement to AP. The concern among Republican leaders appeared to grow in light of Trump’s refusal to immediately disavow former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke’s support.

Mitt Romney, the party’s 2012 nominee, called that “disqualifying.” And South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, campaigning in Atlanta alongside Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, said she would “not stop fighting a man who refuses to disavow the KKK.” Trump said he had not understood the interviewer who first raised the question about Duke, and he did later repudiate him. “How many times do I have to continue to disavow people?” he said.

Several high-profile Republicans and conservative writers have embraced an anti-Trump social media campaign, using the Twitter hashtag “NeverTrump.”

Trump has won three of four early primary contests, roiling a party that had assumed his populist appeal with voters would fizzle.

Instead, he’s only grown stronger and appears to be in commanding position heading into Super Tuesday, the biggest single-day delegate haul of the year.

Tensions boiled over during Trump’s rally Monday in Radford, Virginia, where he was repeatedly disrupted by demonstrators, including 20 or more chanting “Black lives matter.” At another point, he asked a protester, “Are you from Mexico?” after he was interrupted during remarks about immigration.

He ordered several people to be removed, then cast himself as a unifying political force.

Big money backing Madigan primary opponent

A name from the past has been leading the charge for Jason Gonzales’ Democratic primary campaign against Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan.

Blair Hull, the hugely wealthy but unsuccessful 2004 Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, directly accounts for $100,000 of the $300,000 that the Illinois United for Change PAC has raised since January (and maybe double that, because it’s unclear who controls a company responsible for another $100,000). The independent expenditure committee has so far reported spending money only on Gonzales.

I was able to reach Hull through an intermediary to ask him why he decided to get involved against his fellow Democrat Madigan in the primary. He would communicate only by email, and didn’t respond to a follow-up question.

Hull said he believes Gonzales gives the state “an opportunity for a fresh start,” and predicted his candidate, an entrepreneur who received an MBA from MIT, would be a “true statesmen” in the General Assembly.

Madigan, Hull said, “is not a team player.” Madigan “does not cooperate well with others,” and gave as an example Madigan’s lone refusal out of all 50 state party chairmen to work with the national party on sharing voter information. Madigan, Hull said, “wanted to

Rich Miller control the voter file because he wanted to control who was elected in the state of Illinois.” He said his view was “amplified” when he discovered that Madigan opposed same-day voter registration (although that is now state law with Madigan’s backing).

“This lack of cooperation and teamwork has led to the dismal condition of our state today,” Hull claimed. “I believe the state of Illinois and the Legislature would be improved significantly without Michael Madigan.”

And with that, he politely signed off, saying he hoped what he said was helpful and looked forward to “speaking with you after March 16.” So, that’s that until after the March 15 primary, I suppose.

So far, Illinois United for Change has sent three mailers, which all have said positive stuff about Gonzales. It’s widely expected that the group will go negative on Madigan soon, perhaps even by the time you read this.

Is it possible that Madigan could actually lose? Well, the speaker appears to be working his district as if that very thing could happen, which means he’s

leaving no stone unturned. His own polling reportedly shows him ahead by a 6-1 margin, but everybody is operating under the assumption that respondents may not be telling the truth.

Madigan has unleashed the hounds on Gonzales, dredging up some longago arrests and a felony conviction and even finding a letter from Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez that strongly argued against a gubernatorial pardon, which Gonzales eventually received. Gonzales’ campaign originally claimed Madigan had “lied” and the Alvarez quote was “faked,” but relented when I showed them the actual letter.

Four years ago, Madigan was challenged by another Latino candidate who was trumpeted by some in the media as a possible winner because his district is dominated by Latino-Americans. Madigan ended up winning that race by a huge margin. Gonzales is different, however, because the Latino candidate has far more money than anybody has ever had against Madigan.

Madigan received 9,860 votes in his contested 2012 Democratic primary out of 13,021 votes cast. His own 13th Ward accounted for 6,464 of those Madigan votes, out of 7,870 cast.

Madigan’s massive political organization backed Mayor Rahm Emanuel last year, and in the runoff Emanuel

received 56 percent in Madigan’s 13th Ward to Cook County Commissioner Chuy Garcia’s 44 percent, which clearly shows that the ward’s Latino voters can be convinced to vote for a white incumbent against a credible Latino opponent. And the liberal Garcia is now supporting Madigan, which should help.

Much of Gonzales’ money is coming from folks who backed Gov. Bruce Rauner’s campaign, including Hull, who told the Sun-Times in 2014 that he contributed to Rauner because “I admire wealthy people who want to serve. … People who are wealthy can really do what they believe, they can push for the right reforms.”

Rauner is horribly unpopular in Chicago and among suburban Democrats, so it’s difficult to see how Gonzales can pull this off if Madigan continues the attack by tying Gonzales to the Republican governor. It’s not a huge stretch to suggest, for some Democrats, that’s almost as bad as a felony conviction – and maybe worse in some households.

I suppose stranger things have happened, however, which is what is pushing Madigan so hard.

Apple supports terrorists

To the Editor: For those who are not news junkies, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook is defying a court order to allow the FBI to get into an iPhone. The device is the one the San Bernardino shooters were using. The phone was not the property of the shooters; it was given to him by the agency he works for to use. That means the privacy is the agency’s.

The shooters’ privacy is where Cook is hanging his refusal. Many cases have decided that government, school and company communications are not the property of the individual. Cook’s argument keeps the FBI from finding other people who may have been involved in the attack.

He and his Silicon Valley friends spend millions each year on buying politicians, and I am sure that is the reason the FBI won’t do what I would propose to solve the problem. I would have the FBI get a contempt-of-court order on him and put him in jail. General population would be appropriate. Then go to the next person in line and ask him. If he said no, he goes to jail immediately. I bet they wouldn’t have to go too far down the chain before somebody said we will get right on it. Keep the others in jail until the phone is unlocked.

Providence beats Tinley Park to set up rematch with JCA in regional semifinal

dgoss@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – The rematch everyone has been waiting to see will tip off at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The Providence Catholic boys basketball team made sure of that Monday night when the Celtics opened the Class 3A Lincoln-Way West Regional with a 59-47 victory over Tinley Park.

Providence (12-18) will challenge rival Joliet Catholic, the highest seed in the regional, in the first semifinal Tuesday. Lincoln-Way West will tangle with Rich East at 7:30 in the other semifinal.

The two winners will clash for the title Friday night.

On Jan. 9, Providence gave JCA a good run before dropping a 51-43 decision. The Celtics had lost to Chicago Catholic League foe Bishop McNamara, 67-60, the night before. Those were two games the Celtics wanted to get.

“We could have gone south after that weekend,” Providence coach Tim Trendel said. “Instead, we have grown up since then. The credit goes to our seniors and our assistant coaches (Dennis Cleveland, Randy Holzhauer and Kyle Murphy).”

Trendel said he and his staff still are discussing which way they will attempt to defend the Hilltoppers.

“Sometimes you see JCA and they

have so many pieces,” he said. “Do we figure that Jackson, who I think is a Division I player, will get his points and try to limit the other guys, or do we try to stop him and take our chances with the other guys? That’s the old coaching question, and we’re still in between which way to go.”

Asked if there was any danger of Providence overlooking Tinley Park, Trendel said, “No, when you have the record we have, you can’t afford to overlook anyone. To be honest, we’ve been preparing for JCA, but we didn’t tell our kids that.

The final quarter belonged to Morris senior Jordan Miracle, who took advantage of the attention being paid to Shaw and scored 11 of his 15 points, including a 6 of 6 showing from the free throw line.

“That’s a senior stepping up and knocking down a few big shots in the fourth,” Blumberg said. “And Matt Shaw got us a cushion by hitting a few big shots in the third.

“We know we have to play better Tuesday night, but by having close losses the second time around in our conference against teams like Sycamore, Kaneland and Yorkville that are similar to Plano makes us feel pretty good.”

Clampitt led Coal City with 14 points before fouling out, while Blake Harseim scored eight and Nick Micetich added seven.

We had to switch up our own defense and go to a trap to try to quicken the pace of the game up. We didn’t want the game to go as slow as it was going.”

The plan worked, as Morris racked up 15 points in the second quarter to take an 18-17 lead into halftime. Shaw hit another 3-pointer and drained all three of his free throws when he was fouled on another to finish the first half with nine of his game-high 21 points.

Clampitt matched Shaw point for point as he also finished the first half with nine points and kept the Coalers, who finish with a 7-21 record, right on the Redskins’ heels.

JCA retains No. 1 spot as postseason arrives VIEWS Dick Goss The quarterfinals – the play-in games, if you will – in Classes 3A and 4A boys basketball were contested Monday night.

The teams that competed in those games were seeded in the bottom half of the sectionals in which they are entered.

That’s not to say one or more of those teams can’t be surprises this week, but they will need knock off a team or two that enjoyed more consistent success during the season in order to achieve that status.

Meanwhile, the teams that are included in the final Herald-News top-10, large-school rankings for the regular season all have reason to believe they can win the regional they are in and advance to next week’s sectionals.

Most will play regional quarterfinals Tuesday night, the rest will take the court Wednesday night.

This is a rundown of our final rankings, with reasons why any of these teams can be a factor this week and beyond.

1. Joliet Catholic (21-5): The Hilltoppers have been in the No. 1 spot for six weeks. They battled through the East Suburban Catholic Conference with a 5-4 record and are 16-1 outside the league, the only loss to Minooka.

Jalen Jackson is the ESCC Player of the Year and Luke Mander, Harold Davis, Pete Ragen and Jared Lenoir are good complements in the starting lineup.

2. Minooka (21-8): The Southwest Prairie champion Indians, as noted, handed JCA its only loss outside the ESCC. Joe Butler is among the best all-around players in the area, and Larry Roberts, Jon Butler, Nick Clemmons and Blake Parzych provide a solid, veteran supporting cast. Minooka earned the No. 1 seed in the 4A Lockport Sectional, and the Indians are equipped to win it.

3. Joliet West (17-9): In the eyes of many observers, the Tigers, who move up a spot in the rankings this week, are the most talented team in the area. They appear to have gotten things back in order late in the season and are primed for the postseason. Trevian Bell and Teyvion Kirk are a strong 1-2 punch.

4. Lincoln-Way Central (17-8): The Knights were up-and-down in the stretch run, although victories over Thornton and then Lincoln-Way West for a second time were especially noteworthy. Coach Bob Curran’s

team has nice balance and gets good guard play from Isaiah Malone and Jarret Gmazel, which always is a plus at tournament time.

5. Plainfield North (17-9): The Tigers jump two spots in the rankings after finishing the season strong and claiming sole possession of second place in the Southwest Prairie Conference. Kevin Krieger is the area scoring leader and is among the top rebounders. A matchup with Bell and Joliet West in Friday’s regional final at Neuqua Valley would be interesting.

6. Lincoln-Way West (16-9): The Warriors rely heavily on the allround play of junior guard Marco Pettinato. He is a difference-maker.

West has the benefit of playing its 3A regional on its home floor, with JCA or possibly Providence looming as a regional final opponent.

7. Bolingbrook (15-10): The Raiders are as hot as anyone, having won eight of their past nine, and have size and athleticism. It’s not the same team that was third in the state in 4A a year ago, but Bolingbrook, which finished second to Homewood-Flossmoor in the SouthWest Suburban Blue, figures to compete in every postseason game it plays. Freshman guard Joseph Yesufu is a good one already.

8. Joliet Central (14-12): The Steelmen have been without guard Taquan Sims for a week for violation of team rules, and they lost their final two regular-season games, to Bolingbrook and Joliet West.

But Malik Fuller and Jose Grubbs remain a good 1-2 punch. Central will have a tough road in the Lincoln-Way Central Regional, facing Plainfield East and then perhaps Lincoln-Way Central.

9. Plainfield East (14-11): If Bolingbrook is not the hottest team in the area, the Bengals are. They have won six straight and nine of 11. With 6-foot-7 Elyjah Goss and guard Lee Higgins leading the way, East has become one of those teams nobody wants to face in the postseason. The Bengals-Joliet Centeral matchup Wednesday at Lincoln-Way Central should be exciting.

10. Lemont (17-9): This area does not see the Indians as often as some others because of playing in the South Suburban Blue, but they are capable. P.J. Pipes is an impact guard and Nick Wisz is one of those athletes who find ways to beat you.

The Minooka Regional semifinal matchup against Bolingbrook is one to watch.

Coalers proud of Class 1A second-place showing

cherron@shawmedia.com BLOOMINGTON – Class 1A wrestling programs from throughout Illinois have had the same mission during the past four seasons – beat Dakota.

The small school not far from the Wisconsin border has become one of the most respected in the state in recent years, since it’s been willing to compete against schools of any size in order to make its athletes better.

Coach Peter Alber’s squad brought a 21-4 record to Saturday’s dual team finals. One defeat came to eventual 3A champion Oak Park-River Forest, another was to eventual 2A champ Washington and the other two were against 3A quarterfinalist Hononegah and also Deerfield, a team that was ranked in the top 10 in 3A. Included in their wins over bigger programs was a victory over 3A quarterfinalist Montini.

So there are good reasons why the Indians had rolled to three straight Class 1A titles and looked to add to their dominance last weekend. While

Olympia and Vandalia both held early leads over the Indians in the first two rounds of Saturday’s competition, Dakota stormed back to capture decisive wins.

Only one team in the past four years had given Dakota a serious run for its money at state, and that was Mercer County in the 2013 finals, when the Indians started their current streak.

Dakota trailed by 10 points with four matches left before rallying for a 35-25 victory.

Coach Mark Masters’ Coal City squad met Dakota a year ago in the semifinals and fell, 56-16, before bouncing back to take third place in its first state appearance since 1999. But after being ranked second behind the Indians throughout the current season, the Coalers believed they could beat the champs, and gave them a good run for their money.

It quickly became apparent that this year’s title meet would also be dramatic after the 31-3 Coalers opened with three straight victories to grab an early 12-0 lead. Coal City still led, 18-15, with six matches remaining but Dako-

ta won the next four and then was able to forfeit the final two bouts to claim a 31-30 triumph.

Despite the narrow setback, Coal City made some noteworthy history.

It was the first time the program had won two-straight trophies. And the second-place finish equalled the program’s previous-best showings, which they pulled off in 1984, 1995 and 1998.

“There’s a reason why they’re fourtime state champs,” said Joey Rivera, who was a two-time state finalist.

“They’re a good team and we came out and gave it our best effort and wrestled tough for six minutes. We had a big freshman class this year and a lot of them stepped up and played a huge role this year and that’s part of the reason why we’re here. Everyone gave their best effort at practice and we wrestled smart as a team. I’m going to Cornell College now and I’ll be rooting these guys on from there.”

The Coalers will graduate 215 of their 489 total wins (44 percent) with Rivera (51) and state champion Riley Kauzlaric (49) leading the way in victories. Others in the eight-man senior

group with big win totals were Jonah Englert (44), Alec Leasure (36) and Max Rowell (30).

But the cupboard certainly won’t be bare for the Coalers next season, as they try to equal the program mark for sending a third straight squad to the dual team finals, something that it did in 1993 to 1995.

Among the wins leaders who will return are juniors Brock Crawford (38), Jake Hiles (37) and Bryan Stopka (30), sophomores TJ Jezik (40) and Danny Norton (31), and freshmen Alex Friddle (46) and Ryan Wasielewski (38).

“Coming in, we were the underdogs, since they were three-time state champs, which is something that’s special to them,” Englert said. “But from the beginning of the season, it was our goal to beat them. Coming up short just 31-30 shows a lot about how our program has skyrocketed over the years. I give all of the credit to our coaches for pushing us and always being there for us, and I give credit to the family of the wrestlers. I’m proud of our team. We worked our tails off all season long and it was a great experience.”

Schoonover, Reed-Custer primed for sectional

Shaw Media Correspondent BRAIDWOOD – The Reed-Custer boys basketball team’s regional championship victory celebration was still going strong Friday night 30 minutes after the game concluded.

A half-hour earlier, more than 1,800 witnessed the third consecutive Class 2A regional championship for the 26-3 Comets. Led by a fourth-quarter explosion from Travis Schoonover, ReedCuster knocked off El Paso-Gridley, 73-63, to advance to the 7 p.m. Tuesday Clifton Central Sectional semifinal against Chicago Christian (22-6). Chicago Christian knocked off Illiana Christian, 59-48, to claim the Illiana Christian

Regional title.

“I am so proud of how hard this group has worked to accomplish what we have this season,” Porter said. “Our senior leadership has been tremendous, and we hope to play well and win the sectional championship.”

If Porter’s Comets accomplish that goal, it would be the third sectional championship in the school’s 80-year boys basketball history. The last sectional championship was in 1962, under coach Ken McGee. Those Comets fell in the single-class supersectional. In 1938, in the Comets’ third season, coach Louis Bottino led the 33-3 Comets to second place at state.

Schoonover, who had a game-high 29 points against El Paso-Gridley, has

scored more than 1,800 career points.

The Comets, who hit nine 3-pointers Friday, have 282 this season.

For most schools, 282 would be a school record. Not at Reed-Custer. The Comets, who finished 25-6 last year, set a National Federation of State High School record, with 419.

“Travis has been a special player for us here at Reed-Custer,” Porter said.

“Nobody has ever worked harder than Travis has. With over 1,800 points in his career, he truly is an all-stater.”

The Comets also are led by their 6-foot-6 senior, Brent Headrick. He scored 21 points and had 10 rebounds in assisting Schoonover in Friday’s victory.

coach, Jerry Cougill, who began his 38th season at the helm Monday, will have to wait for his ace pitcher. Headrick, who has a mid-to-upper 80s fastball, will be taking his baseball talents to Illinois State in the fall.

“Brent is a true leader of our team,” Porter added. “He had an outstanding game and really got us going in the first quarter.”

Chicago Christian, the Metro Suburban Conference Eastern Division champion, is led by 6-7 senior center Anajuawon Spencer. He scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the Knights’ 59-48 win over Illiana Christian. Junior guard Malik Parker and 6-6 Trevor Wolterink help give the Knights a formidable trio.

Lefty Rodon looks to refine, build on solid rookie season The ASSOCIATED PRESS GLENDALE, Ariz. – Carlos Rodon arrived ahead of schedule last season.

Less than a year after being selected third overall in the June 2014 draft, the White Sox left-hander came a long way, in the words of pitching coach Don Cooper.

Rodon is looking to refine things, with emphasis on improving his control, and become one of the rotation anchors as the Sox hope to make a run at their first postseason appearance since 2008.

A year ago, he got more of a spring-training look than anticipated when ace Chris Sale missed all of March with a broken foot, and Rodon didn’t miss the opportunity. He still went to Triple-A Charlotte to start the season, but that didn’t last long for the North Carolina native who starred at N.C. State.

“It was a dream come true to get called up,” Rodon said. “I wasn’t really expecting it. I’d settled in at Charlotte, we were about to head on a road trip when I got the call.”

He debuted April 21, one of three relief appearances before getting his first start in the second game of a doubleheader May 9 against Cincinnati.

That was also his first win, a six-inning outing in which he struck out eight.

Rodon’s best outing came Aug. 11 against the Los Angeles Angels at U.S. Cellular Field. He struck out 11 and walked one in seven shutout innings, permitting only four hits.

The Sox rotation will feature four left-handers – Rodon, Sale, Jose Quintana and John Danks – and probably

win every time I go out to pitch,” Rodon said.

“He came a long way,” Cooper said.

“We want to pick up where we left off, starting right now. There’s a long way to go. He’s just getting started.”

Rodon enjoyed his first season with the longtime coach.

“Coop was awesome,” he said. “We had a couple breakthroughs and figured some stuff out, and got me on the right track.”

The routine the coach and pupil developed clicked with the lefty.

“We want to make sure that everything we may have to do in a game we’re going to be doing in practice,” Cooper said. “The game can’t be the first time we’re trying something.”

Rodon said that so far in the spring, he hasn’t thrown his best pitch – the slider. That’s in “the back pocket” he said for now, while the change-up and fastball are the immediate issues.

“We’re looking for more strikes with all his pitches,” Cooper said.

“We’re looking to improve on focus, and it comes down to making pitches and executing pitches.”

As for restrictions on the young pitcher’s innings?

“Not in my mind,” Cooper said.

The addition of Miller on Monday gives the Spurs the two oldest active players, according to STATS. Miller turns 40 on March 19, followed

Miller had spent all season with the Timberwolves, his eighth team. The 17year veteran averaged 3.4 points and 2.2 assists in 26 games.

Spenga in Mokena combines cardio, strength training and yoga

OKENA – Spenga, the fitness center that opened in July in Mokena, already is becoming a national phenomenon.

Not even a year old, the center already has franchises in Downers Grove and 15 more cities, divided between Chicago and South Carolina.

The goal is to have them in the 48 continental states of the U.S. “The response we had was amazing right at the get-go,” said Amy Neilsen of New Lenox, Spenga co-founder.

“Even before we opened [in Mokena], everyone already knew about us. It’s been a lot of word of mouth.”

Melissa Grady of Mokena said she joined during opening week. Grady previously served as a trainer at a “big box” fitness center and spent an hour each day doing cardio and lifting weights.

When she heard Spenga’s onehour workout included 20 minutes of cardio, 20 minutes of strength training and 20 minutes of yoga, she was skeptical of getting a full workout in a one-hour session, especially since the yoga classes of her past bored her.

But when Grady tried the sessions, she was sold. Every session challenges her, she said.

“It’s really amazing,” Grady said.

“It’s a total body workout. I’ve never hit every muscle like I do there.”

Neilsen, who grew up in Frankfort, said she and her co-founders – Heather Ruff, Roger McGreal and Dan Collins – saw a need for a different kind of workout – one that offered classes where members could work on cardio, strength and flexibility without taking separate classes for all three.

“We felt like there was still something missing in the markets,” Ruff said. “You couldn’t go to one place to get everything in one workout.”

Ruff said they chose Mokena as the site for their first center for the challenge. They felt if Spenga succeeded in a small community, it could succeed in large communities such as Chicago.

The hourlong classes at Spenga all have the 20-20-20 time schedule of spinning, high-intensity strength training, then yoga, but the trainers make each session different so members won’t get bored.

Ruff, who has a degree in kinesiology, said yoga is a necessary component in a total body workout for physical and mental reasons.

Amy Neilsen and Heather Ruff are co-owners of Spenga in Mokena. It offers a one-hour workout, including 20 minutes of cardio, 20 minutes of strength training and 20 minutes of yoga.

“It’s good for alignment and posture – that total body awareness,” Ruff said. “There’s a neuromuscular awareness, training your body to recognize how your back feels best, how your neck feels best.”

Ruff said yoga also is good for joint mobility and balance. Strengthening and balancing the muscles around particular joints makes the joints more stable, she added. Many of her clients enjoy the yoga aspect specifically for the postural balance strength it gives them.

“Yoga is also important for the recovery process,” Neilsen said. “After working out, you’re going to be able to recover a lot quicker. You won’t be as sore.”

Atmosphere also is important.

From the moment clients walk into the center, they’re engulfed in essential oil aromatherapy. Neilsen

described it as a “super-energized scent.”

Neilsen said the studio is dimly lit for spinning sessions to help members get into their zone. The trainers choose the music.

The lights go up for strength training, where the energy is kept high.

Neilsen said the lights are softer for the final yoga phase of the sessions, and the music is not as high-energy, but not necessarily Zen-like either.

Spenga’s strength training includes three components: turbulence training, which involves heavier lifting; Tabata-style lifting, which is a series of short intervals of high-intensity strengthening separated by shorter rest periods; and a partner format, where members line up facing one another doing different exercises, then switch to do their partner’s exercise.

The center’s format has been

attracting members of many demographics, and not just from Mokena.

Mark Swanson of Orland Hills, who has worked out most of his life, feels Spenga is the best program he’s experienced, making the long drive worth it.

“I pass easily two gyms on my way there,” Swanson said.

Weighing in at 300 pounds, Swanson said it’s important to him that members are free to work out at their own pace and that everyone is accepted. Swanson’s goals are weight loss, which he is achieving, and getting healthy.

“I’m so impressed with the trainers, the workouts, the facility and the environment,” Swanson said. “[The members] are young, they’re old, they’re thin, they’re overweight.

There’s males, there’s females. ... The environment is phenomenal.”

The third-grade students at Haines came together to sweat, smile, and jump Feb. 19 during “Jump Rope for Heart” event. The students created a ‘Why Wall’ on the gym wall where they posted their reasons for participating. Haines set up nine stations in the gymnasium and cafeteria. Stations included stair steppers, basketball jump shots, healthy snacks, long jump ropes, short jump ropes and one with stethoscopes for students to listen to their own hearts. More than $7,000 was raised for the American Heart Association with the majority of that money going toward training and research for heart diseases. P.E. teacher Sean Wolf coordinated with the American Heart Association, parent volunteers, teachers and the students.

Silver Cross to offer Prepared Childbirth classes The HERALD-NEWS NEW LENOX – Silver Cross Hospital is offering Prepared Childbirth classes.

A two-part class will be from 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesdays, March 22 and March 29. Both classes will be held in the Silver Cross Hospital, Pavilion A, Conference Center, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox.

Participants will receive instruction from a registered nurse on breathing, relaxation and floor exer-

cise techniques. She will also review the labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum processes. A tour of the birthing unit is included.

Cost is $80 a couple. There is no charge for patients under the care of an OB/GYN with the Aunt Martha’s Joliet Community Health Center or the Will County Community Health Center.

But I realize I was starting to hate it, too. Every time something about it defeated me, I remembered my earlier life – and felt very old. I feel younger now.”

Dear Dr. K: We’ve finally convinced my mother to move to an assisted living facility. After spending the past five decades in her current house, she is very nervous about the move. What can we, and she, do to make the transition easier?

Dear Reader: Assisted living facilities are designed for people who can’t live on their own because they need help with the tasks of everyday living. The facilities generally provide meals, help with taking medication, housekeeping, laundry and activities. They are not meant for people who need round-the-clock nursing care.

No matter how clear the need, moving from one’s home to an assisted living facility can be emotionally challenging.

Realizing this, assisted living facilities often have people on staff who can help people like your mother to manage their feelings and make the transition easier.

It shouldn’t be hard for your mother to physically adjust to an assisted living facility. The environment is designed to meet the needs of an aging body. There are no steps to navigate. The bathrooms are adapted for walkers. There won’t be any more reaching for heavy pots and pans if the facility dining room provides meals.

Your mother might feel comforted, too, if she brings personal items to her new living space. This may include artwork, family photos or favorite furniture.

The new environment will allow your mother to increase her physical activity and wellness. Assisted living facilities always have exercise classes, such as tai chi or chair yoga, and many offer physical therapy on campus. It’s important to learn which services are available and take advantage of them.

In today’s deal, how should South play in seven spades after West leads a trump?

The auction suggests that the author was looking at all of the cards!

However, as I mentioned yesterday, when you have a two-suiter and find a fit in the first suit you bid, upgrade your hand. Here, South should see the slam potential if North has both red-suit aces. But as Blackwood will not help, South starts with a fourclub control-bid. Then, after three more control-bids confirm that North does have those two aces, South leaps majestically to the grand slam.

West, anticipating declarer’s need of ruffing winners, sensibly starts with a trump. (South must have a club void.)

Declarer has six side-suit winners (five hearts and one diamond), so needs seven trump tricks: four winners on the board and three club ruffs in his hand.

South takes the first trick on the board and ruffs a club high. He continues with a heart to the ace, another club ruff high, a diamond to the ace, and a third club ruff high.

Then he draws trumps and claims. It is a textbook dummy reversal.
