Walona Motel – New Lenox The 1920s was a period of dramatic economic growth in our country. Prices for cars actually fell during the decade as the assembly-line techniques permitted faster production.

Early in the decade, nearly 90 percent of all the world’s cars were made in the United States. By 1930, more than 20 million cars were registered in the United States, nearly three times the number during the prior decade.

As the interest in car travel grew, so did the number and variety of roadside services available in the United States.

It was during the 1920s that many of the modern conveniences for motorists sprang up along highways and major roads. These new roadside businesses catering to the motorist included motels, diners, hamburger stands, and drivein restaurants.

Many of the earliest suppliers of food on the Lincoln Highway started out selling gas before diversifying into food, snacks, drinks and other amenities. Other highway caterers, however, became more adventurous and enterprising from the beginning, including many family run roadside stands, diners and driveins. These small businesses were successful until larger franchises and chains began competing with them for the traveling customer.

It was not until the 1920s that cheap, basic accommodations for road travelers appeared in the form of “motor camps,” open-air camping grounds with communal laundries and washrooms.

These facilities were gradually superseded by sites providing individual huts containing beds, and thousands were built across the country between 1929 and 1933. These establishments were the forerunners of the typical “tourist court,” a semi-circular layout of cabins around a manager’s office. Soon, most courts had running water in their

rooms, and in years to come, air conditioning, radio, and, eventually, television were introduced.

The then image is a postcard advertisement for the Walona Motel in New Lenox. Notice the artist uses an insert feature to highlight the motel sign. The irregular shape of the Walona Motel sign represents a shift away

from the traditional vertical or box format design that was common in the late-1950s.

The motel once was operated by Walter and Iona Ruthenbeck and was both AAA rated and Duncan Hines recommended. Still in operation today, the Walona Motel is an example of a theme motel that provided temporary shelter for Lincoln Highway tourists.

The Lose a Ton project seemed a simple way to get people exercising and losing weight, said Carrie Anderson, park district membership coordinator.

“You don’t have to do anything,” Anderson said. “You can walk in and weigh in, and come six weeks later and weigh out. You don’t have to use our facility. You don’t have to attend any of our nutrition classes. We wanted to keep it simple.”

Six hundred and sixty-six people are participating in the collective effort to shed 2,000 pounds. In its second year, the Joliet Weight Loss Challenge, also known as the “Lose a Ton” project – invites people to come together to lose weight.

The goal was exceeded in 2014 when participants shed a little more than 2,312 pounds.

Natalie O’Connell of Joliet was one of the top 10 pound-shedders last year and said the group effort is a good way to get going.

“It’s fun,” said O’Connell, who from appearances does not look like she needs to lose a ton – figuratively – of weight.

But with a job that puts her at a desk most of the day, O’Connell said she needs to stay active. Natalie and her husband, Rory, are in a team of 12 in the Lose a Ton effort.

They call themselves “Fat Mondays” to stay focused on their goals after weekends.

“We have a group text going,” O’Connell said. She gets reminders from a team member to do tummy crunches while at her desk and watch what she eats for lunch. “It’s fun because it gives us a chance to stay in touch all day, and we get together at night.”

Participants showed up at the athletic club Jan. 19 or 20 to weigh in. The only requirement is that they return March 5 or 6 to weight out.

The park district’s main goal is to encourage people to

start moving, said Gina Rodriguez, fitness coordinator at the Presence Inwood Athletic Club.

She pointed to a Will County Community Health Status Assessment Report that came out in August 2013. The percentage of adults considered obese and overweight in Will County is higher than the Illinois and national averages, according to the report compiled by the Will County Mobilizing for Action Through Planning and Partnership Collaborative.

is 30.3 percent, compared to 27 percent in Illinois and 27.4 percent nationwide. The percentage of overweight adults in Will County is 38.1 percent, compared to 36.4 percent statewide and 36.3 percent in the United States.

“What this tells us is our county in particular has more obesity than the state as a whole and the country as a whole. What are we going to do about it?” Rodriguez said. “We challenged the community, thinking this may be a reason to start. Everyone is willing to

“The big goal now is to get kids moving,” he said.

The same can be said for the Lose a Ton program. Not everyone keeps up a diet and fitness routine when it’s done.

But some do, Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez called obesity “a big issue to handle.” But, she said, “I think awareness is starting to get better.”

Joliet mulls overweight permit fee

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – City Manager Jim Hock said the city of Joliet may consider charging for overweight permits if a survey shows a disproportionate number of trucks being diverted to Joliet by the closing of the Walter Strawn Road railroad crossing.

The railroad closing in Elwood has led to trucks finding other ways to get in and out of the CenterPoint Intermodal Center.

Hock said the city in March or April will do a count of the number of trucks using Laraway Road in Joliet.

A problem already has developed on the west end of Laraway Road, where trucks have backed up a half-mile outside of the entrance to a Waste Management facility, Hock said.

The Illinois Commerce Commission in January shut down Walter Strawn Road at Route 53 out of concern for public safety because of a railroad crossing just off of

the intersection. It has been the scene of a large number of crashed gates.

Walter Strawn served as a route into the CenterPoint Intermodal Center.

The problem, Hock said, is

that trucks now have the option of using Arsenal Road, where Will County charges $20 for overweight permits, or Laraway Road, where Joliet does not charge for overweight permits.

The city does not charge for overweight permits to encourage economic development in the Joliet section of the CenterPoint Intermodal Center, Hock said.

Hock said he is concerned truckers will opt for Laraway Road to avoid the overweight permit.

“We want to see what kind of extra burden that is,” Hock told the Joliet City Council at a meeting last week.

At that meeting, Councilman Jim McFarland raised the possibility of CenterPoint taking over responsibility for Laraway Road someday.

Councilman Larry Hug noted the city has portable scales that could be used to check and enforce weight restrictions.

Police Chief Brian Benton replied that stopping trucks for weight checks could come with drawbacks.

“The more enforcement we have down there, the more opportunity for gaper delays,” Benton said.

Lemont native helps pay tribute to Ernie Banks

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Those who watched the televised memorial for Chicago Cubs legend Ernie Banks on Jan. 31 may have seen a bugler playing taps.

The man behind the bugle was Staff Sgt. Kyle Rinke of the 85th U.S. Army Reserve Unit. Rinke, 28, lives in Lockport and is a band director at Caroline Bentley, Alex M. Martino Junior High and Spencer Crossing. He is 2004 Lemont High School graduate.

As a member of the 85th Army Band out of Arlington Heights, he is one of several buglers assigned by the U.S. Military’s Midwest Public Affairs Office to play at funerals of former military members.

Banks, who was drafted into the U.S. Army and served

in Germany from 1951 to 1953, qualified to have a bugler.

“I happened to be the person who said that I could do it,” Rinke said.

Playing at the memorial meant a lot to Rinke, as he grew up a Cubs fans and heard stories about Banks from his father.

Rinke’s father, Tom, said both he and his wife, Diann, had tears in their eyes watching their son on TV playing at the memorial.

“Seeing Kyle honor one of my childhood sports heroes was great by itself, but to do it as a member of our military is special,” Tom Rinke said.

Kyle Rinke said he has played taps at funerals with media coverage before, but none were the same as playing at this memorial.

when he first played taps for a funeral. Someone had called Lemont High School asking for a student who could do the job and his band director, Terry Redford, suggested Rinke.

said why he chose him. Perhaps it was because he knew Rinke was planning to go into education.

“I just remember being nervous as hell,” Rinke said of his first taps experience, “and not knowing what was going on.”

Rinke said he joined the U.S. Army for somewhat selfish reasons – to get a college education – but came out learning the value of hard work and being self-sufficient at age 20.

He doesn’t play taps for notoriety – he does it because he believes anyone who served for his or her country deserves the honor.

“It needs to be done,” Rinke said. “If I couldn’t have done it [for Banks’ funeral] another volunteer from my unit would have.”

Sinovich is one of four firearms instructors for the department, where he instructs in everything from hand guns to rifles and shot guns. He also teaches basic movements, clearing and tactical drills, among other things.

Outside of his job, Sinovich continues serving the community. He is in charge of the Grundy County Honor Guard, representing the department and the county at many official functions. In May, the Guard was the honorary honor guard at the police memorial in Springfield.

“People trust us to represent the county and different police departments,” he said.

He also is a part of the Kendall County Special Response Team (think SWAT team), a multi-jurisdictional agency.

This week, state Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, is set to present Sinovich with a certificate of achievement at the Minooka police department, Meyer said.

“I’ve been doing the Officer of the Year for six or seven years and this is the first time for this,” Meyer said.

Sinovich said he is honored to have been selected for such a huge accolade. But he wants to give credit where it’s due – to the entire department.

“If it weren’t for other members of this department I don’t think I would be in the position I am in and learning what I have learned,” he said.

“Every day I come in for the other officers to help them, to help this be a better place to work and to make the community a better place to be a part of.”

MINOOKA – Minooka police officer Jim Sinovich was recently honored as the department’s Officer of the Year. Sinovich was accompanied by family members at Minooka’s last Village Board meeting when Chief Justin Meyer presented him with a plaque.

After the meeting, Meyer couldn’t say enough great things about Sinovich, who’s been on the Minooka police force since 2008.

“He’s such an asset. I am lucky to have him on the department,” Meyer said. “He’s a leader, an up-and-coming leader.”

Looking at his list of accomplishments, it’s understandable why he was selected to receive this award.

Sinovich served in the U.S. Marines Corp for four years.

When he returned he was hired on as a Minooka police officer.

For the past three years he has served as the department’s school resource officer at Minooka High School. Sinovich decided that working with the students and faculty would give him a different aspect in his job.

He really likes being out and about in the community, especially working with young people who will soon be our young adults. He has enjoyed establishing relationships with the teens and working with MCHS staff during graduation ceremonies, sports games and parades.

JOLIET – When former Joliet resident Herman J. Troppe began playing the accordion, the room went silent.

“He would cast a spell on people,” said Herman’s son, Tom Troppe of Pennsylvania.

“It’s amazing how many lives he touched with his music.”

What’s interesting about accordions is that they are quite loud, Tom said. To play them, musicians must strap them to their chest. The music resonates through their bodies and then generates into the room, he added.

“And my dad played it with incredible power,” Tom said.

By the time Herman was 10, he was musically proficient and was playing the accordion in Joliet taverns. At 12, the organist at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Joliet – where Her-

man was an altar server and had learned his catechism in the Slovenian language – was called to serve in World War II, so Herman took over the job.

“Back then, there were five Masses on Sunday. It was a big responsibility for a 12-yearold,” Tom said, “especially after playing the taverns on Saturday night.”

Tom said Herman’s family didn’t require an alarm clock because his accordion-playing would wake them. Herman often got into trouble for practicing too much, Tom said, especially on Sundays, which was considered a day of rest.

At Joliet Township High School, Herman and his accordion participated in and recorded with the school’s marching band. Herman also played clarinet, Tom added.

With his late brother Al, Herman also recorded music for Balkan Records in Chicago.

Epcot Center in Florida, Tom said. Despite his classical preference, Herman recorded with an acoustic punk band, Even in Blackouts.

Yet Herman, a man of high integrity, never allowed his music to interfere with his family, Tom said, using it to bless them and enrich their daily lives.

“He tried to teach his three sons about music,” Tom said.

He did the same with others. He played a Russian song to the man who fixed his accordion strap, a song the man’s grandmother once sang to him, Tom said. He played the church service at Selinsgrove Center in Pennsylvania, a state-run facility for disabled adults, Tom added.

“Music was his gift,” Tom said, “and he wanted to share his whole person with people.”

finished his studies at Northwestern University because the Chicago area had more performance opportunities than Michigan did, Tom said.

With Northwestern, Herman again played and marched in the Rose Bowl.

Herman earned both his bachelor’s and his master’s degrees in music.

After serving in the Air Force band, Herman built a successful music career, one that included playing in many renowned symphony orchestras, including Boston, Chicago – with which he also recorded – National, Minneapolis and St. Louis, Tom said.

Herman also played accordion live on WGN-TV and as part of pit orchestras for musicals; he wrote music books for accordion arrangements; and he played organ for Chicago Cubs games at Wrigley Field.

JOLIET TOWNSHIP – A Joliet man was killed Saturday afternoon after he was struck by a freight train.

James A. Manstis, 68, of Joliet was pronounced dead at 2:34 p.m. Saturday at the emergency room of Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox. The pedestrian was struck by a freight train at Rowell Avenue and Manhattan Road, according to the Will County Coroner’s office.

The Will County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident.

Casey Christopher Heermann, age 43, passed away Saturday, February 7, 2015, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center from complications of a stroke.

Born July 18, 1971, in Joliet to Charlene (Joneson) and Daniel Heermann. He was educated in the Coal City School System, was a graduate of Joliet Junior College and was currently attending Governors State University.

Casey worked in sales at Best Buy and Verizon, and was currently employed at Cooler Smart. He was a lifetime member of the Juggy Gales Supper Club and Fantasy Football League and a Master of Useless Trivia. His second love after his family was the Arizona Cardinals football team. Casey will be remembered as “an all around nice guy” and a kid at heart.

Charles T. Janulis, Sr., age 81, of Kankakee and formerly of Wilmington, passed away Saturday, February 7, 2015, at Westwood Oaks in Kankakee.

Born March 17, 1933, in Chicago, Charles Thomas was a son of the late Charles and Louise (Pukas) Janulis. He was raised and educated in Chicago and attended Chicago Vocational High School.

On April 16, 1953, Charles enlisted in the United States Army, where he honorably served during the Korean Conflict until his discharged as Corporal on March 9, 1955.

It was on May 9, 1953, that Charles married Marian J. Malmquist in Chicago, and she preceded him on August 22, 2005. Charles worked as a shift supervisor for Calumet Heat Treating in Chicago prior to gaining employment with the Illinois Department of Corrections. He retired from Stateville

Correction Center in 1995 after 18 years of service. Charles was a lifetime member of the Wilmington V.F.W. as well as the Izaak Walton League. He enjoyed the outdoors and made many trips domestically throughout the country.

Charles will be remembered as an accomplished artist who took pleasure in painting with various mediums, furniture restorations and woodworking.

Survivors include his children, Jana (Ralph) Flores of Wilmington, Jean (Larry) Yates of Manteno and Charles T., Jr. (Michelle) Janulis of Wilmington; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, June Janulis of Braceville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marian; and one sister, Evelyn (Bob) Sulzer.

Visitation and video tribute will be held on Wednesday, February 11, 2015, between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at Baskerville Funeral Home, 700 East Kahler Road in Wilmington. Funeral services will follow Thursday morning, February 12th at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial with full military honors will be in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood at 11:30 a.m., where Charles will be laid to rest with his late wife Marian.

JOHN W. MUREN John William Muren “Jack”, age 83. Peacefully, Thursday, February 5, 2015, at his home with his family by his side, following a lengthy battle with COPD. Born in Joliet, he was a lifelong Joliet area resident. Graduate of Joliet Catholic High School Class of 1949.

After high school John was denied entrance into the navy for being “too tall “. Drafted into the Army in 1952, John trained at Fort Knox and later stationed in Germany as part of the 7th Army Tank Division.

In 1954, John met with Al Menzer and became the first hire of Kemlite Co. located then on Republic Avenue making silk screen signs and fiberglass canopies. Leading in the development of a fiberglass sheet (FRP), Kemlite relocated to their present location on Rte 6 in 1976. John retired in 1983 as Vice President, General Manager & COO. Later served on boards for the YMCA, Trinity and Kemlite Co. Even with his long hours, John found time to coach his sons little league baseball in Plainfield, Boy Scouts and Indian Guides, enjoyed camping, college trips visiting his sons, tennis and golf. Most memorable being the Wisconsin golf trips with “Billy-Boy”, “TrickyDick” and “Uncle Don”. John had 2 Hole-in-ones to his credit, one in Park District Tournament in 2000.

An avid reader with a quick sense of humor to the end. Upon news of his passing, Fr. Michael Lane commented “What a complete gentleman”.

Survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Agnes Elizabeth (nee Smolkovich) Muren of Joliet; three sons, John (Denise) Muren, Jr. of Columbus, OH, James Muren of Joliet and Dan (Sandra) Muren of Shorewood; and six grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary (nee Markelz) Muren; one son, David Allen Muren (2009); and brother, Edward Muren.

Illinois bill would create prep sports concussion oversight

SPRINGFIELD – An Illinois state senator has introduced legislation that would establish teams of medical professionals at high schools throughout the state to deal with sports concussions.

According The Springfield State Journal-Register, state Sen. Dan Kotowski’s bill would cover all high school sports and require that doctors and not coaches decide when student athletes can return to games. The bill also would require parents or guardians to sign consent forms after their children are treated by doctors.

Under the bill, each school would have to establish concussion oversight teams made up of at least one doctor, nurse, athletic trainer and other medical professionals, and require the teams to create a return-to-play protocol.

Kotowski said concussions are a major concern of families, school districts and coaches.

The Park Ridge Democrat said he filed the bill out of concern that injured students are returning to games too soon.

But Kurt Gibson, associate director of the Illinois High School Association, said much of what is included in the bill already is IHSA policy.

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois will run out of money to pay the state’s court reporters within weeks, but Gov. Bruce Rauner is working with lawmakers to find a “responsible solution to the problem,” his spokeswoman said.

Taxi driver found shot dead in Chicago suburb of Maywood

MAYWOOD – Police in the Chicago suburb of Maywood say a taxi driver was found shot to death behind the wheel of his cab.

Maywood police spokesman Officer Persia Allen said 34-yearold Seneca Richardson was found shot in his back Friday night.

The Cook County medical examiner said Richardson was pronounced dead at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. Allen said investigators believe Richardson was the victim of an armed robbery.

Dive planned to determine if shipwreck is Griffin

LANSING, Mich. – A state official said divers will explore an apparent shipwreck in Lake Michigan discovered by two treasure hunters who say it may be the long-lost Griffin, which disappeared more than three centuries ago.

Kevin Dykstra and Frederick Monroe found a vessel hull on the lake bottom in 2011 while searching for gold bullion that some believe was lost in the lake during the Civil War. They met last week with state officials in Lansing.

State maritime archaeologist Wayne Lusardi told television station WZZM that he doesn’t think the men found the wreckage of the Griffin, which was commanded by the French explorer La Salle.

Illinois: Protect against identity theft after Anthem hack

CHICAGO – Illinois’ attorney general is warning consumers who were affected by the Anthem Inc. hack to start taking steps to protect themselves against identity theft.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan said anyone affected should be on the lookout for unsolicited phone calls and emails.

Last week the insurer said hackers stole personal information for up to 80 million customers, including Social Security numbers.

Madigan also said customers should monitor their accounts closely and check their credit reports.

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. – Police say they have identified the gunman who took his own life after killing four people and injuring two in a quiet neighborhood near Atlanta.

Cedric G. Prather, 33, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after shooting his ex-wife, another adult and two children Saturday afternoon in Douglasville, about 20 miles west of Atlanta, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday.

The sheriff’s office also identified the adults killed as Latoya A. Andrews, Prather’s ex-wife; and Joseph Terry Brown. Both were 33 years old. A 7-year-old child died at the scene, and a 9-yearold was taken to a hospital but also died, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Two other children, an 8-yearold and a 15-year-old, were in critical but stable condition at a hospital, the statement said.

Containment up on fire that destroyed 40 homes

CROWLEY LAKE, Calif. – Fire crews increased containment of a wind-driven wildfire that destroyed 40 homes, but they said Sunday that they still didn’t know when residents evacuated from two small California towns at the eastern base of the Sierra Nevada would be able to return home.

Dozens of power poles have come down in the communities of Swall Meadows and Paradise, creating hazards for the roughly 250 residents who have been evacuated, California Department

of Forestry and Fire Protection Capt. Liz Brown said. Crews were assessing trees in the two communities Sunday to ensure they wouldn’t come down.

“We would love to shoot for today, but I don’t know,” Brown said of the prospect of lifting evacuation orders. “Once it’s open, it’s open. We don’t have the resources to escort people in and escort them out.”

The fire started near a highway on the border of Inyo and Mono counties Friday afternoon. It blew up when 50 to 75 mph winds whipped through wooded areas near the two communities for about three hours, turning the flames into a “freight train,” Brown said.

Swall Meadows was hit hard by the blaze – 39 homes were destroyed there while one burned in the community of Paradise, Brown said.

What happens if Homeland Security shuts down?

By ERICA WERNER and ALICIA A. CALDWELL The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Spending for the Department of Homeland Security hangs in the balance as Congress fights over immigration matters in the agency’s annual funding bill. Without action by Feb. 27, the department’s budget will shut off.

To hear Democrats and many Republicans tell it, the result would be unacceptable risks to U.S. security at a time of grave threats worldwide. In reality, though, most people will see little change if the department’s money flow is halted, and some of the warnings of doom are as exaggerated as they are striking.

“There are ghoulish, grim predators out there who would love to kill us or do us harm,” said Sen. Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, top Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Committee.

“We should not be dillydallying and playing parliamentary pingpong with national security.”

In the view of some House conservatives, though, shutting off the agency’s $40 billion budget for a time “is obviously not the end of the world,” as Rep. Matt Salmon, R-Ariz., put it, because many agency employees would stay at work through a shutdown.

Who’s right, and what would the impact be if Congress were to let money for the department lapse?

Salmon and a few other conservatives are the only ones saying it publicly so far, but the reality is that a department shutdown would have a very limited impact on national security.

That’s because most department employees fall into exempted categories of workers who stay on the job in a shutdown because they

Even in a shutdown, most workers across agencies, including the Secret Service, Transportation Security Administration, Federal Emergency Management Agency and Customs and Border Protection, would continue to report to work.

Airport security checkpoints would remain staffed, the Secret Service would continue to protect the president and other dignitaries, the Coast Guard would stay on patrol, immigration agents would still be on the job.

Indeed, of the agency’s approximately 230,000 employees, some 200,000 of them would keep working even if Congress fails to fund their agency. It’s a reality that was on display during the 16-day government-wide shutdown in the fall of 2013, when national parks and monuments closed but essential government functions kept running, albeit sometimes on reduced staff.

So what of the sometimes overheated rhetoric, often

from Democrats trying to prove a political point?

“If this goes to shutdown,” Mikulski said, “this could close down ports up and down the East Coast, because if you don’t have a Coast Guard, you don’t have the ports. You don’t have the ports, you don’t have an economy.”

But if the department loses its money, the Coast Guard will stay in operation and so will the ports.

There would be one big change, though. Most workers would not get paid until the shutdown ends, a circumstance guaranteed to put pressure on members of Congress hearing from constituents angry about going without their paychecks.

Making employees come to work without pay is “a real challenge” for them, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Workers at agencies funded by fees, instead of by congressional appropriations, would continue their functions while still drawing a paycheck.

Both worked in finance and backed the Wall Street bailout.

While the first actual votes of the next presidential campaign may be a year away, Democrats already are drawing such comparisons between the former Florida governor and the GOP’s 2012 White House nominee – and they don’t consider them flattering.

Democrats are unwilling to let Bush define himself as a reformer who aims to close the gap between the rich and poor, so they are trying to paint him as this campaign’s Romney. Romney struggled in 2012 against criticism related to his

work in private equity and his portrayal by President Barack Obama’s allies as a cold-hearted plutocrat.

“We don’t need to try to show that Jeb is like Romney.

He pretty much is Romney,” said Eddie Vale, vice president of American Bridge 21st Century, a liberal group set up to conduct opposition research on Republicans. “When it comes to any ideas or policies, he’s the same as Romney.”

That line of criticism was noticeable last week after Bush gave his first major policy speech as a potential presidential candidate. His remarks to the Detroit Economic Club emphasized an upbeat economic message and touched on overhauling the U.S. immigration system and trying to improve the lives of children underserved by public schools.

Democrats countered by circulating the transcript of a 2012 interview in which Bush cited his opposition to the auto

bailout. Bush said the auto rescue – a key issue in Michigan – was “driven by politics,” and he noted the Obama administration’s role in shuttering car dealerships and giving the United Auto Workers union an equity stake in Chrysler.

Obama’s team successfully used that bailout as a wedge against Romney in Michigan and Ohio, repeatedly referring to a 2008 Romney op-ed with the headline, “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt.” Romney did not write the headline and advocated a managed bankruptcy for the industry, but it created the impression he was willing to forgo U.S. auto jobs.

Bush’s early approach to his potential campaign signals a desire to avoid such pitfalls.

The Clarkson study tested hundreds of bottles of storebrand herbal supplements sold as treatments for everything from memory loss to prostate trouble, and found four out of five contained none of the herbs listed on the labels.

At the University of Guelph, researchers used DNA fingerprinting to find that a third of 44 supplements tested contained no trace of the plant on the label.

But the dietary supplement industry takes issue with DNA testing, and some consumer advocacy groups say the method by itself is inadequate because it cannot detect the most serious problems with supplements – contamination with heavy metals or chemical adulterants.

ALBANY, N.Y. – DNA barcoding has exposed some infamous cases of food fraud, such as cheap catfish sold as pricey grouper and expensive “sheep’s milk” cheese that was really made from cow’s milk.

But can it tell if a pill touted as an energy-booster contains ginseng or is just a mix of rice powder and pine?

Some scientists say yes, while industry groups and some independent experts say DNA testing alone is inadequate for analyzing botanical products that have gone through a lot of processing from leaf to tablet.

About 65,000 dietary supplements are on the market, consumed by more than 150 million Americans, according to a 2013 Canadian government study. The American Botanical Council estimates U.S.

sales of herbal supplements came to $6 billion that year.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires companies to verify their products are safe and properly labeled, but supplements are exempt from the FDA’s strict approval process for prescription drugs.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said lax oversight of supplements can have serious public health consequences, noting a 2013 hepatitis outbreak traced to a tainted diet supplement and the death of a baby at a Connecticut hospital after doctors gave the child a probiotic supplement later found to be contaminated with yeast.

Last week, Schneiderman ordered Wal-Mart, Walgreen’s, Target and GNC to stop selling store-brand herbal supplements that DNA tests found questionable.

BERLIN – As Russian-backed separatists gain ground in eastern Ukraine, efforts to broker peace appeared to gain momentum Sunday, with leaders of Germany, France, Russia and Ukraine announcing plans for fourway talks this week.

The proposed meeting Wednesday in the Belarusian capital of Minsk emerged from a phone call between German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.

The aim is to revive the much-violated peace plan both sides agreed to in Minsk in September, and end a war that has killed more than 5,300 people according to United

Nations estimates.

Although the United States won’t be at the negotiating table, a growing clamor in Washington to arm Ukraine will be on the minds of those present in Minsk. U.S. officials have said President Barack Obama is rethinking his previous opposition to sending weapons to Ukraine, despite fears of triggering a proxy war between Washington and Moscow.

As the saying goes, you see something new every game.

Truth be known, however, there are many basketball games each winter where little happens that merits filing in permanent memory.

Friday night at Plainfield North was different. Everything that occurred before, during and after the matchup between the Tigers and Plainfield East will not be forgotten soon.

To begin with, the overflow of student sections on both sides were clad in green St. Baldrick’s “Going Bald for a Cure” T-shirts. Heads were shaved, and Irish dancing added entertainment to the extended halftime of the varsity game, which North won 63-54.

On the court, it began with an entertaining sophomore game that North won, 59-49. I mentioned to Steve Brandy, who would broadcast the varsity game on WJOL Radio, that the kid wearing No. 25 for East’s sophomores was Vinny Tarello, who is No. 3 on the sophomore roster. I wondered about the jersey switch.

Between games, North athletic director Ron Lear asked for a moment of silence in memory of Dramon Ratcliff, who had died playing basketball Wednesday of a previously undiagnosed cardiac condition. He was an eighth-grader at John F. Kennedy Middle School in the Plainfield district.

After reading a touching statement from East coach Branden Adkins about Dramon, Lear said the East student section was wearing mismatched socks in his honor.

He announced that Tarello, who also played in the varsity game, was wearing No. 25 in honor of his friend, whose number was 25.

Excitement, heartbreak on the third-place mat

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – One of the most exciting moments of the wrestling season is watching an athlete earn a sectional trip while competing on the third-place mat at a regional.

But it’s also one of the most heartbreaking times when a competitor sees either his season or career come to an abrupt conclusion because of a late loss in the same setting.

In Saturday’s Class 3A meet at Lincoln-Way Central, perhaps the most dramatic moment in a third-place match happened at 182 pounds when Providence freshman Logan Anderson got a takedown just before the buzzer to pull out a 4-3 win over Joliet Central’s James Budrick.

The Celtics also advanced freshman Dominick Ambrose (120 pounds) and senior Patrick Follenweider (152), who claimed two wins over Lincoln-Way East senior Mike Graf.

But Providence senior Andreas Korallus (132) fell in his third-place match to Joliet West’s Roman John-

son, and Mason Heimlich lost on a tiebreaker to 145 champ Javon Thompson of H-F in the semifinals and then fell to Lincoln-Way Central’s Ryan Gillooley for third.

Lincoln-Way Central’s Joe Brauer was the second seed at 113 but lost his opener to Andrew’s Jake Bryson. The two met again in the third-place match, and Brauer got a pin. The Knights’ Austin Rudsinski lost, 1-0, in the semifinals to 106 champ Darvell Flagg of Joliet West and then fell in the third-place match.

East finished with four straight wins on the third-place mat. Patrick McGowan pinned Joliet West’s Ben Mahn at 160, freshman Devin O’Rourke claimed a 2-0 win at 195, and Vincent Sparks was a victor at 220.

Griffin Sammy Diehl had to beat Joliet West’s Pat Leaf twice at 285 to advance, and Tigers senior Jesse Hurtado lost, 5-3, to Homewood-Flossmoor’s Alan Willis at 170.

And in the Class 3A Bolingbrook Regional, Plainfield Central’s Jared Ellingwood edged Lockport senior Cameron Roat, 4-2, for third at 132.

And Bolingbrook’s Clarence Golden nipped Plainfield East senior Omar Salazar, 6-5, in the third-place match at 152.

Plainfield North’s Tyler Myers won, 8-6, for third at 113; and Plainfield Central senior John Nudera claimed a 2-0 win for third place at 126. But Romeoville senior Alex Heston lost a 5-3 decision for third at 120 to Neuqua’s Maurice Mitchell, whom he beat in the opener.

Lockport senior Joe Pacetti edged Plainfield East’s Troy Mayon, 3-1, for third at 170; and Plainfield Central senior Akwasi Aikins won, 8-6, over Lockport senior George Tragos in the third-place match at 182.

Plainfield North’s Leo Santos advanced at 220 after a 3-2 win on an ultimate tiebreaker. Lockport also got third-place wins from Dalton Dwyer (106) and George Wolfe (145), while the hosts also received a third from senior Jordan Shaw (160). Plainfield East got a third at 195 from Zach Dixon over Plainfield North senior Max Anderson. Bengals Keith Bitner (138) and senior Mateo Valdez (145) both settled for fourth.

LaSALLE – Lincoln-Way West’s wrestlers qualified all but one of its 14 competitors to this weekend’s Class 2A Sterling Sectional out of the LaSalle-Peru Regional.

Winning titles Saturday for the Warriors were Tom Buell (113 pounds), Joey Schloegel (120), Amier Khamis (126), Noah Keefe (132), Kyle Ruettiger (138) and Trevor Schmidt (182), while Jake Pakula (106), Anthony Bendy (170), Nick Trolian (195) and Steve Lotz (285) were second. Taking third were Grahm McClure (145), Andrew Hogeveen (152) and Gabe Montalvo (160).

Morris qualified champion Andrew Faught (285), runnerup Cody Baldridge (160) and third-place finisher Ryan Olson (170), while Joliet Catholic’s Cameron Haney (145) also moved on after placing second.

Class 3A Rock Island Regional: Plainfield South’s wrestlers advanced eight individuals to this weekend’s Class 3A Normal Community Sectional while Minooka qualified six.

Winning titles Saturday for the Cougars were Andrew Bonner (138 pounds), Danny Saracco (195) and Eric Johnson (220), while Marc Fleenor (120), Joe Miner (152) and Nate Karas (285) took second. Adrian Cervantes (160) and Derek Biliskov (170) advanced after placing third.

The Indians received a title from Carson Oughton (170), while Zach McDowell (106), Jared Moreno (132) and Josh Bouie (195) took second. Adam McDowell (113) and Chris Hiscock (182) claimed third place.

In the lone head-to-head title matchup involving local competitors, Saracco edged Bouie, 2-1, on a tiebreaker for the 195 championship.

Class 1A Agricultural Science Regional: Coal City qualified 13 individual wrestlers and Wilmington advanced 10 to next weekend’s Wilmington Sectional.

The Coalers received titles Saturday from Joey Rivera (106),Cody Minnick (120), Corey Jurzak (132), Max Rowell (145), Jonah Englert (152), Riley Kauzlaric (182) and Jake Frost (220), while Jake Hiles (113) and TJ Jezik (126) took second. Hossa gets go-ahead goal, Blackhawks edge Blues

By R.B. FALLSTROM The Associated Press ST. LOUIS – A little more than a minute into the critical power play, the Blackhawks dispensed with setting up shop on offense and went for the quick hit.

Marian Hossa made it count on a one-timer from the slot midway through the third period for the go-ahead goal in a 4-2 victory Sunday over the St. Louis Blues.

“I just tried to finish it,” Hossa said. “That was a set play and I’m glad it worked.”

Hossa clinched it with an empty-netter for the Hawks, who regained their footing at the end of a 4-3 trip with victories over St. Louis and Winnipeg the last three days. Now, they’ll be settling in for eight in a row at home that begins Monday night against the Coyotes.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been on any team that had eight straight home games,” coach Joel Quenneville said. “It should be fun.”

Bryan Bickell had a goal and assisted on the go-ahead score for the Hawks, who also got a goal from Marcus Kruger.

“I thought it was a pretty good effort all the way around,” defenseman Duncan Keith said. “Obviously, they’ve got a lot of hard-working players, and it’s a tough game every time we play these guys.”

Vladimir Tarasenko and David Backes had a goal apiece for St. Louis, which never led and has lost two straight since a franchise-record 13-game point streak. The Blues are 205-2 at home.

There were only five penalties overall, with the Hawks getting two power plays and the Blues one.

Tarasenko tied it at 2 on a breakaway early in the second, getting Corey Crawford to commit with a couple of forehand fakes and then slipping the puck into the net for his team-leading 28th goal and fourth in five games.

ORLANDO, Fla. – At the end of an up-and-down road stretch, the Bulls trudged into the final stop of their six-game trip hoping to sustain a bit of momentum with the All-Star break fast approaching.

Mission accomplished – thanks to some late-game assistance from the Orlando Magic.

Pau Gasol dunked in the rebound of Derrick Rose’s missed layup with 9.4 seconds left, and the Bulls rallied for a 98-97 victory Sunday night over the Magic.

Jimmy Butler led the Bulls with 27 points, and Gasol finished with 25 points and 15 rebounds. Joakim Noah added 18 points and nine rebounds.

The Bulls led by as many as 16 points before finding themselves in a six-point hole with just over 2 minutes to play.

“Today, we started out like

we want to play, like we were going to take another step (forward), but it was almost a step back,” Gasol said. “Let’s face it – we got away with one.”

The Magic had two opportunities to win the game in the closing seconds. But Nik Vucevic’s hook rolled off the rim, and Tobias Harris overshot a potential game-winning tip-in as time expired.

“You want to be a good team, you’re going to have to find different ways to win, and that’s what I did like about tonight,” Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said.

Victor Oladipo led six Orlando players in double figures with 18 points. Harris added 15, and Vucevic 14.

After playing catch-up for most of the second half, Orlando benefited from a frenetically played fourth quarter.

Marshall may be a pro, but his cons have piled up If I’m the Bears and trying to plan for the future, all I know is what I don’t want from receiver Brandon Marshall.

I don’t want him distracting the team by being a regular on Showtime’s “Inside the NFL” during the season, as he was in 2014. I certainly don’t want him flying to New York on his day off to do the show. I don’t even want him contacting a Chicago radio station and saying, “First-time caller, longtime listener.”

I don’t want him referring to himself as “the first in ... space” for being the first active player on “Inside the NFL.” How about focusing on first in the division?

I don’t want him chatting up Roger Goodell in the commissioner’s suite during the Super Bowl, as he was a week ago for a reason no one can quite fathom. I don’t want him making me involuntarily spit out my bean dip as their meeting is captured on national TV. I don’t want him texting Bears chairman George Mc-

Caskey for anything. I don’t want him huddling with the team’s general manager after each game, as he used to do with Phil Emery. I don’t want him ingratiating himself with anybody but teammates.

I don’t want him taking on the role of the nation’s Brandon advocate for Marshall mental-health awareness. If I’m the Bears, I salute the way he has confronted his borderline personality disorder, but I don’t want him speaking for us or anybody else on the matter of mental health. I just don’t. Too much drama wherever he turns.

I don’t want him thinking that the world was failing in its efforts to destigmatize psychological issues until he came around. Many people have helped spread the word before his arrival on the scene.

Many people are dealing with serious emotional problems, or know others who are, and

VIEWS Rick Morrissey those people are important, too – all of them. They are a chorus of voices, and they are heard.

If I’m the Bears, I don’t want Marshall saying, as he did before last season, that quarterback Jay Cutler can be MVP. Of anything.

I don’t want him agreeing with an NFL Network report that the Bears are having “buyer’s remorse” about giving Cutler $54 million in guaranteed money. Check that. Yes, I do.

I don’t want him calling a news conference during the season to refute past domestic-abuse claims made by an ex-girlfriend. I don’t want him giving even the slightest impression the victim is to blame.

I don’t want him causing everyone to tiptoe around him to keep him happy, which

is how that ill-advised news conference at Halas Hall came to be last year.

I don’t want him making me take into consideration his feelings whenever I make a decision, whether it’s about a game plan or a postgame meal.

If I’m the Bears, I don’t want Marshall challenging a trash-tweeting Lions fan to a boxing match – to help launch an anti-bullying campaign, of all things.

I don’t want him signing his contract extension on ABC’s “The View,” as he did last year. I don’t want him on “The View” unless it’s to talk about a Bears Super Bowl title. I’m not sure Whoopi will understand, but if he can learn to sacrifice, so can she.

I don’t want Marshall losing it after a terrible loss to the Dolphins and having to be restrained from going after a teammate, the way he did last season. But if it has to come to that, let it again be a kicker he tries to attack.

I don’t want him walking off the field and waving in

another receiver for a fourthand-10 attempt with the Bears down 45-7 to the Patriots.

I don’t want him saying, “That’s wack, bro,” when a reporter asks whether he left the field because he was hurt, upset or frustrated. I don’t want him responding, “That’s wack, bro,” to anything other than someone asking him to point out Mr. Wack.

I don’t want him handing me all this drama. I don’t want him thinking this is how life is supposed to be, even for the most theatrical receiver.

And, oh, yeah, I don’t want him catching 61 passes for 721 yards the season after he had 100 catches for 1,295 yards.

All I know is what I don’t want from Marshall. And that’s not a good thing.

If I’m the Bears, as I look back on this long list, I might just come to the realization that I don’t want him, period.

Decisions on current DEs needed before looking for free agents

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com With a new general manager and coach, and plenty of questions about which players are returning, it’s difficult to gauge where the Bears’ organization when it comes to adding free agents and how much the team will be willing to spend.

We know GM Ryan Pace believes in building through the draft, but you can count on some free-agent additions when it all begins March 10.

We’ll go position by position breaking down where the Bears stand, who their options are and who they could target next month. Today, we analyze the defensive end position.

NOTE: For this exercise, we are going to focus on some of the 3-4 defensive ends. The Bears have yet to confirm whether they’ll play a 4-3 or 3-4 base.

Current Bears situation: At

this time a year ago, defensive end was the Bears’ biggest

need. Then they splurged, signing Lamarr Houston, Willie Young and Jared Allen. Unfortunately, Allen had a career-low 5.5 sacks, Houston had one sack – and then Willie Young tore his ACL celebrating it – and Young was the star with 10 sacks, but his season ended in Week 16 because of a torn Achilles tendon. In addition to figuring out how these three fit in a new defense, the Bears need to see how Lamarr Houston and Houston Young recover from their first major injuries in the NFL. Can Young stand up and be an outside linebacker? What about Allen? While Houston played three-technique in the

Bears’ nickel last season and could be a five-technique on the end in a 3-4, he also has experience playing outside linebacker in a 3-4 in Oakland. A lot needs to be sorted out.

Also returning are youngsters Cornelius Washington and David Bass. Both players showed flashes last season but may be without a position in a 3-4.

Dream on: There isn’t one defensive end who is set to break the bank – it would have been Greg Hardy, if he wasn’t in trouble off the field. The best defensive ends available are 4-3 players, Jason PierrePaul and Jerry Hughes, and we’ll talk about Hughes in the linebacker part of this series.

Chicago connections: Unlike all the other positions we have studied, the class of free-agent defensive ends, with a focus on

those who can play in a “30” front, does not present any former Saints (Pace), 49ers (defensive coordinator Vic Fangio) or Broncos (coach John Fox).

Other options: When looking at 3-4 defensive ends, teams want long and wide players, in the J.J. Watt or Muhammad Wilkerson mold. These players should have an ability to rush the passer but also to control offensive linemen and stop the run. Sometimes, 4-3 defensive tackles can bounce outside in a 30-front. A couple of options there include Tyson Alualu, a former first-round pick by the Jaguars; Jared Odrick, a former Dolphins first-rounder who has played in every game over the past four seasons; and Alex Carrington, who has been hampered by injuries the past two seasons but was a solid reserve for the Bills in 2011-12.

Jarvis Jenkins has struggled in his three seasons in Washington. He had a Pro

Football Focus grade of -16.7 last season. The 6-foot-4, 315-pounder turns 27 in April.

If the Bears choose the veteran route, they could consider the 6-6, 325-pound Alan Branch, who had three tackles for New England in the Super Bowl. The Bills released Branch in August after a DUI, and he appeared in eight games for the Patriots.

An intriguing option is C.J. Wilson, who had two sacks in 16 games with the Raiders last season after spending the first four seasons of his career as a rotational player for the Packers. Wilson turns 28 in March, is a 6-foot-3, 300-pounder and graded out well against the run last season, according to Pro Football Focus.

We’re going deep here, adding some other names to the list, such as Leger Douzable, who had 2.5 sacks for the Jets last season, and Tim Jamison, a Chicago-area native and reserve player for the Texans the past six seasons.

The tactics for pairs versus teams

Henri Poincare, a French mathematician who died in 1912, said, “Ideas rose in clouds; I felt them collide until pairs interlocked, so to speak, making a stable combination.”

In tournament bridge, there are two main forms of scoring (excluding board-a-match). In a pairs event, your results are compared with every other pair sitting the same way. This puts a premium on gaining overtricks. In team events, your score is compared with that of your teammates.

You should try to make or break the contract; overtricks are usually insignificant.

Today’s deal highlights the difference. In six no-trump, what would you do in teams and pairs after West leads the diamond queen to your ace?

You have 12 sure tricks: five spades, three hearts, two diamonds and two clubs. In a team event, you would probably cash the spade ace, play a spade to dummy’s 10, and take a heart finesse. When it worked, you would cross to the spade king and take a second heart finesse. But when West discarded, you would concede one trick – no big deal.

In a pair event, though, you must give more thought to the overtrick.

Assuming East has the heart king, you may need three dummy entries to take three heart finesses. At trick two, you should lead the spade queen (or jack) from your hand, and when West follows suit, overtake with dummy’s king. Then you take a heart finesse.

Given the known 5-0 spade break, you play a spade to dummy’s eight, repeat the heart finesse, cross to the spade 10, take a third heart finesse, and claim all 13 tricks for an excellent score.

Once treatment begins, symptoms may begin to improve within a day or two. Eye pain and eyelid swelling usually decrease before vision improves.

The best way to reduce your risk of infection after eye surgery is to follow your doctor’s post-surgery care instructions. For example, faithfully using antibiotic and cortisone drops or ointment will help prevent infection and reduce inflammation. Wash your hands thoroughly before applying the drops, and avoid touching the bottle tip to your eye.

You should also avoid rubbing or touching your eye after eye surgery. You may need to wear a protective eye shield at night for a few days or weeks.

This will help you to avoid accidentally rubbing your eye while you sleep.

When I had cataract surgery several years ago, my doctor gave me detailed instructions about what to do after surgery. When I first read them, I doubted that anything bad would happen if I ignored his instructions. None of my patients had had complications from cataract surgery -- and I suspected that some had not followed their eye doctor’s instructions (since I knew they didn’t always follow mine).

By coincidence, a patient of mine developed endophthalmitis following cataract surgery about a week before my surgery was scheduled. He told me he “wasn’t sure” he had followed the doctor’s instructions. That gave me religion. Fortunately, his treatment was successful, and I had no complications – after following my doctor’s orders.

Dear Doctor K: A few weeks after my cataract surgery, my eye began to hurt and my eyelid became swollen. My doctor said I have “endophthalmitis.”

What is this? Is it related to my cataract surgery?

Dear Reader: Endophthalmitis is inflammation inside the eye that is usually triggered by an infection.

In the United States, most cases are caused by bacterial infections that develop after eye surgery. Endophthalmitis is a serious problem that can lead to permanent loss of vision.

The inflammation affects the vitreous fluid, the clear gel that supports and fills the rear two-thirds of the eyeball. The inflammation can also extend to nearby tissues in the eye.

Symptoms can vary slightly, depending on how soon after surgery the infection develops. Early symptoms can include: • a dramatic decrease in vision in the affected eye; • eye pain that gets progressively worse without treatment; • red eyes; • swollen eyelids.

Late symptoms tend to be milder than early symptoms. They may include blurred vision and increased sensitivity to bright light.

To maximize your chances of preserving and restoring your vision, treatment should begin right away. You are likely to be treated with one or more of the following: • Antibiotics injected directly into the infected eye.

• Corticosteroids injected into your eye to decrease inflammation and speed healing.

• Antibiotics injected into a vein.

• Antibiotics applied to the surface of the eye.

• A procedure in which part of the infected vitreous fluid is removed and replaced with sterile saline or another liquid.

The employee will complete tasks that include, but are not limited to, the following: dig trenches, water distribution system operations, potable water operations, wastewater treatment plant operations, wastewater collection system operations, laboratory testing, sampling, clean up rubble and debris, trim trees, mow lawns, remove snow, repair underground utility infrastructure, patch streets, pump maintenance, general mechanical maintenance and restoration of construction sites.
