For leisure-hungry Americans in the early 20th century, there were a wide range of recreational activities available to a public looking for entertainment opportunities, but nothing was more popular or widespread as the movies.

From the first freestanding Nickelodeon storefronts in the early years, which began the process of showing projected motion pictures to small groups, to the larger cathedral movie houses of the 1920s and 1930s, millions of Americans embraced the art of movie making in the early years.

For the movie fans during the Studio Era, the over 17,000 movie theaters in operation across America during the 1940s represented their own diversity of screen experiences. These movie venues ranged from small-town theaters with the capacity of only a few hundred patrons to the nearly 6,000 seats at the Roxy Theatre in New York City.

The single-screen movie theaters that punctuated small-town America’s main streets and city neighborhoods since the 1930s are all but gone. One example of a small-town theater that began operation during the early years of Hollywood’s Studio Era is the Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb. The Egyptian Theatre has it roots in the nationwide interest in Egyptian archeology during the early 1920s.

When the DeKalb Theatre Company was searching for a construction theme for a new motion picture house, they hired architect Elmer F. Behrens to design an exterior structure to reflect Egyptian cultural symbols. Construction on the theatre building began in 1928, and on Dec. 19, 1929, the theatre opened to the public.

Over the decades, the theatre was used to show movies and sometimes hosted concerts. By the late 1970s, the theatre was in disrepair and nearly fell victim to condemnation.

Basketball fundraiser provides funds to benefit D-86 classrooms

Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – After a year of friendly smack talk between teams, the Gompers Quadrant basketball team laced their sneakers, put on their game faces and took to the court Saturday to defend their two-year championship title against second-place rival Washington Quadrant.

The skill level ranged from the aggressive seasoned basketball player to the timid rookie, but Washington Quadrant players wanted to taste victory, something they didn’t have against Gompers Quadrant the past two years.

“It felt good to beat Gompers. They trash talk throughout the year, so it’s good to have the win this year,” Washington Junior High physical education teacher George Kouros said. “I like to come out and give a good game, and it’s fun to watch the competitions between the quadrants.”

Saturday marked the third annual Joliet Grade Schools Foundation for Educational Excellence “Hoops for

D86” basketball fundraiser presented

by ExxonMobil.

Joliet Public Schools District 86 teachers and staff from the district’s 21 schools played for the championship trophy on four quadrant teams – Dirksen, Hufford, Gompers and Washington – named after the four junior high schools in the district. There also was a friendly game between District 86 administrators, coached by Superintendent Charles Coleman, and a community team made up of first responders, radio personalities, public servants and business leaders.

District 86 coordinator of communications and development and foundation director Sandy Zalewski said the foundation was started in 2003, and in 2004 began a 10-year baseball fundraiser for the district.

“After 10 years, the board decided we needed to freshen things up, so we came up with the idea of the teacher and administration basketball tournament. We see between 400 to 500 people between the players, parents and community who come out to watch,” Zalewski said. “The smaller students

think their teachers live at school, so it’s fun for them to watch them play.”

Zalewski said the yearly event has generated anywhere from $12,000 to $20,000 annually, but has a goal of $20,000. Funds were raised by corporate sponsorships, personal donations, raffle baskets, concessions and admission.

Teachers in the district have until April of this year to write a grant to the foundation for items needed in their classrooms, and in May the recipients are announced.

ExxonMobil Procurement Director and Joliet District 86 Board of Education member Jeff Pritz said ExxonMobil has donated approximately $96,000 to the foundation since its inception, and was this year’s full court sponsor.

“We [ExxonMobil] hold ourselves responsible to give back to the community. We know that every dollar generated at this event goes back into the classroom,” Pritz said The first two games of the day were between Washington Quadrant and Gompers Quadrant, where Washington won, 65-49. In that same time slot,

Dirksen Quadrant ran over Hufford Quadrant with a score of 67-38. The administration and community game was a back and forth see-saw game, but in the end, the administration pulled ahead for the win, 76-69.

The championship game was between Washington Quadrant and Dirksen Quadrant. Both teams were set and ready to go with the strategy to rotate players in and out every five or so minutes to keep the players fresh.

The teams played with intensity and purpose, as a cohesive team, not just colleagues who pass each other in the halls each day. The game was neck in neck, but at the two-minute warning, Washington Quadrant took a large lead and left Dirksen in the dust. The final score was 62-43, Washington.

“This was a great win for Washington. We lost to Gompers in the championship game the first year and then again last year. We came out of the box and beat them,” District 86 Program Coordinator Natalie Coleman said.

“We know this is for the kids, but this is a great competition too.”

Investigation continues in fatal shooting

bstanley@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – A 21-year-old Bolingbrook man has been identified as the person killed in a shooting Saturday evening.

Authorities were called at 7:12 p.m. Saturday to 160 Cypress Drive in Bolingbrook after receiving multiple calls about shots fired in the area.

Upon arrival, officers located one male victim deceased outside the house with an apparent gunshot

wound, and another man inside the house with an apparent gunshot wound to his abdomen, Bolingbrook police said in a news release issued late Saturday night.

Authorities said there was a large gathering of friends at the house who had earlier in the day attended a funeral in Summit.

“Apparently, a dispute erupted, resulting in gunfire,” authorities said in the news release.

Vicious dogs on the agenda again for Joliet council committee

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A City Council committee is expected Tuesday to review changes in the city’s vicious dog ordinance urged by victims of canine attacks.

The ordinance goes back Tuesday to the Land Use and Legislative Committee.

Some changes to the ordinance were urged by several residents who came to the last committee meeting.

The ordinance was in the process of being rewritten but primarily for the sake of clarification.

Residents who came to the committee meeting two weeks ago said city and township authorities are too slow in dealing with vicious dogs and owners of the dogs are able to move them out of town to escape impounding.

City Attorney Marty Shanahan said the proposed ordinance changes will include a provision that fines owners who do not comply with orders to turn over animals to authorities.

Under the changes, owners of dogs determined to be vicious also can be fined if they do not report that the dogs have been relocated and provide information about how the animal is being confined.

Shanahan said he is meeting with Joliet Township Animal Control staff

to develop procedures aimed at addressing concerns that the city does not follow up to ensure vicious dogs are kept under control.

The township provides animal control service to the city, which does not have its own animal control officer.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk recently suggested the city create a part-time position for an enforcement officer to deal with dog problems.

O’Dekirk, a former Joliet police officer, said people in Joliet typically assume the city takes care of vicious dogs, and the police are called to deal with them.

“When I was a police officer and we got the calls, there was nothing for the police to do other than shoot the dog if the situation called for it or call animal control,” he said.

Crabigale’s redevelopment

Also on the meeting’s agenda is a redevelopment plan for the old Crabigale’s comedy club location in downtown Joliet.

The city, which owns the Loughran Building at Chicago and Cass streets last used by Crabigale’s, has received two proposals after seeking private investment plans for redevelopment of the site.

The Land Use and Legislative Committee will meet at 5 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall, 150 W. Jefferson St.

Quarles Jr., 21, of Bolingbrook. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting at 8:40 p.m. Saturday, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy found he had multiple gunshot wounds.

The Bolingbrook Fire Department transported the other victim to a local hospital where his condition is critical, according to the news release.

Bolingbrook Police Lt. Carter Larry said late Sunday afternoon that the injured man is out of surgery in stable condition, and is expected to survive.

Bolingbrook police are investigating the shooting as a homicide, according to the coroner’s office. Larry said no arrests had been made as of late Sunday afternoon.

The Bolingbrook Police Department is requesting anyone with information about Saturday night’s shooting to contact Detectives at 630226-8620, or Crime Stoppers at 630-3784772.

Lincoln-Way District 210 board openings draw 23 applicants

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – More than 20 people have applied for two open positions on the Lincoln-Way High School District 210 Board of Education.

Applicants include Todd Velky, Lincoln-Way Area Taxpayers Unite treasurer, and Joseph Spalla, who ran for a board seat in the April 2015 election, according to a list obtained

by Shaw Media through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Applicants were needed after the January resignations of board member Christopher McFadden, who did not indicate the reason for his departure, and board President Kevin Molloy, who cited personal attacks as his reason for leaving.

The deadline to apply was Jan. 29.

Superintendent Scott Tingley said the board has scheduled a meeting for Wednesday that will include a closed session, in which the board will conduct interviews.

He said the board is not expected to come to a decision Wednesday and likely will interview applicants in more meetings. He said the board intends to seat two new members by Feb. 25, the last board meeting of the month.

“It’s a solid pool for the board to choose from,” Tingley said.

Within the past year, District 210 officials were faced with a financial crisis that led to the decision to close a school.

JOLIET – An informational meeting is planned for this week as the Illinois State Board of Education and its partner, No Kid Hungry, seek nonprofit organizations to serve as sponsors for the USDA Summer Food Service Program.

During the school year, many Illinois children receive free- and reduced-price meals through the School Breakfast and National School Lunch Programs. The federally funded program provides healthy nutritious meals to kids age 18 and younger, and provides meals to children in need during the summer when they are not in school, according to a news release.

ROMEOVILLE – Construction equipment and foundation materials are starting to occupy Romeoville’s Uptown Square as commercial enterprise takes root in the area.

Groundbreaking on Fat Ricky’s Restaurant and Franconi’s grocery store started Feb. 1 at the southwest corner of Route 53 and Phelps Avenue.

Construction on a 9,425-squarefoot retail center approved Wednesday by the Village Board will start in the spring at the northwest corner of Route 53 and Alexander Circle.

The two developments are a part of Uptown Square, a block that village officials are designating as the downtown area.

The block, and the Route 53 corridor, is anchored by the Edward Hospital Athletic and Events Center sitting west of the two developments.

Uptown Square, and much of the Route 53 corridor, is in a tax increment financing district.

The three buildings will share a central parking lot, which also is being used for community events such as Romeoville’s revived cruise nights.

Quiet time on weeknights was supposed to be 9 p.m., but we had our share of tense moments when the music or laughter went beyond and kids were booted outside and descended on the neighborhood.

My neighbors likely didn’t appreciate the night sounds of skateboards clattering on the concrete in the cul-desac in front of our house, others riding bikes and being loud as boys can be (sorry, neighbors).

I have memories of things they did that got us mad at the time and make us laugh now. Like when they sprayed Pledge on the wood floor in the foyer to use as a Slip’N Slide. There were Silly String wars in the basement that left green globs I picked off the ceiling years later. And once a neighbor called to ask if it was OK that kids were sitting on the roof. It was not.

I know there were other much more mischievous acts that happened under my watch. Some I’ve learned about; others I prefer not to know. Most I can

laugh about now.

Joe Pasdertz Jr., one of these wonderful young men who once hung out at the Kool-Aid house, died Jan. 30. He was just 24. Joe lived in Verona and was great friends with all the boys, so he spent many weekends at our home.

He sat at our dinner table, played music in the basement and got into mischief with the rest of them.

What I remember most about the kids, including Joe, was the laughter, the hugs I’d get and the satisfaction of knowing our home was a good place to be. The annoyances, the loud music, the problems – none of those take up space in my heart.

So this is for Joe. And for all the friends he left behind: Be safe, be happy. And when your own children come home with friends for Kool-Aid, open your door and your heart.

vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plans for the Meijer development outlots at Route 59 and 135th Street are progressing, with the Plainfield Plan Commission recommending last week approval of a new 9,000-square-foot building.

The Village Board likely will vote on the project at a future regular meeting.

The multi-tenant building would be located at the south end of the intersection’s hard southeast corner lot. It would feature a drive-thru and 71 parking spaces, enough to satisfy requirements for a retail store or restaurant.

The building would be the third commercial outlot to be worked on by developer Aetna Development Corp. on the Meijer development. It would have the same design concepts as the adjacent retail buildings containing O’Reilly Auto Parts, Pet Supplies Plus and AT&T. While commissioners were eventually supportive of the development, they had concerns about the northeast and southeast entrance and exit points of the 1.2-acre lot.

“I just wish we could get a bigger setback off of [the private Meijer road],”

commissioner Andrew Heinen said, noting that trash enclosures near the access points could be moved. “It seems like those drives and that parking is so close to that ring road it’s hard to get any meaningful landscaping in there.”

Commissioners also suggested moving the north-south driveway between the building and the ring road closer to the building by eliminating about five parking spots, providing more space to prevent traffic congestion in the lot.

The commission recommended approval of the project with the stipulation that village staff will work with Aetna on adjusting space near the access points.

Special needs school

The Plan Commission also recommended approval of a site plan and special-use permit for a therapeutic day school serving special needs children ages 5 to 21 at the former 3N1 Daycare facility.

Streamwood-based Parkland Preparatory Academy, a state-licensed school, would open a new school in the former day care building, which sits on a 1-acre property located just east of Oswego Fire Station No. 4 off 127th Street and Gilmore Road in Kendall County.

But if you also have a gritty feeling in your eyes along with periods of excess tears followed by periods of dryness, you may be suffering from dry eye syndrome.

It’s a condition that should be checked by your eyecare professional.

Obtaining an accurate diagnosis will enable you to receive treatment and prevent possible permanent eye damage.

Other symptoms, according to the National Eye Institute, include a stringy discharge, pain and redness, blurred vision, heavy eyelids, the inability to cry when emotionally stressed, uncomfortable contact lenses, eye fatigue and the inability to read or work at a computer for a sustained period of time.

Tears wash away foreign matter and keep the eyes lubricated, but with dry eye syndrome there are insufficient tears to do so, according to the American Optometric Association The condition is common, especially in older adults.

Causes can include age; gender (women are more prone, due to hormonal changes); medications like antihistamines, decongestants, blood pressure medications and antidepressants; medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes and thyroid problems; inflammation of the eyelids or the inward or outward turning of eyelids, says the AOA. Environmental causes are exposure to smoke, wind and dry climates, staring at a computer screen for long periods of time, long-term use of contact lenses and refractive eye surgeries such as LASIK. Your eyecare professional will determine first whether disease is the underlying cause. If so, the disease will be treated. If caused by a certain medication, your doctor may suggest switching to another. Symptoms can be relieved with prescription medications to reduce inflammation, to increase tear production or to act like artificial tears.

Some treatment procedures include plugging or surgically closing tear ducts, applying special contact lenses or unblocking oil glands.

A good friend of mine called my home the Kool-Aid house when my boys were growing up. It’s a home where friends routinely gather, presumably for a cold glass of Kool-Aid and a chocolate chip cookie hot out of the oven.

At my house it was more likely to be a bowl of cereal with milk, or peanut butter crackers and a Mountain Dew. There may have been a few batches of homemade cookies.

I guess I grew up in a Kool-Aid house, too. With five children and a big dog, there always seemed to be at least one extra kid at the dinner table and several out in the garage.

I have worked from home since my two sons were young. That likely was one reason their many friends – most from Channahon, Minooka and

Shorewood – came over. The other was I wanted them here.

I don’t think I can count the number of teens, mostly boys, who went through my house. I’d take a break from my home office to check on the laughter and noises coming from the kitchen. I usually didn’t want to know what the conversation was – boys can be gross. Other times they’d share something and get me laughing, too.

Our basement became a regular hangout for them. It could have been the big screen TV we put in for family and adult use that barely got used by us, or the toy room that became a music room.

My boys played the drums, guitar and keyboard. A few pieces of equipment turned into a recording studio with giant speakers, more drums and guitars, a wall of keyboards, computers and sound equipment.

Our nightly dinners were serenaded by the beat of the drums and a sound that was called “screamo” at the time. I’m glad that genre is no longer

Longtime Plainfield farmer was kind and giving More online

PLAINFIELD – Longtime farmer John H. Phelps of Plainfield was outstanding in his field – and on the dance floor, in his church and with other people.

“He was probably the nicest guy you’d ever want to meet,” said John’s son, Ken Phelps of Plainfield. “He’d just come up and start talking to anybody.

He was not introverted by any means.

And he was very kind and giving.”

From childhood until his early 70s, John worked mostly family farms in Joliet – his father’s farm on Caton Farm Road and his wife’s uncle’s farm at River and Black roads. But John also made time to help other local farmers, Ken said.

John never owned a farm, Ken said.

But working for family came with unique benefits.

“He was given a house to live in and he got half the profits of the farm,” Ken said. “He never had a house payment his whole life.”

Ken said John saw many trends in farming, from horses to high-tech machinery. The family farms produced mostly corn and beans, but the family

also kept a few cattle, hogs and chickens.

“When he was little they would have stud horses come in to breed the horses on the farm so they could have horse power to run the machinery,” Ken said.

“He got to ride a horse to school, but his siblings had to walk because he was the oldest.”

Hired workers often lived on the farm with the family, Ken said.

“They had close to 200 acres of land,” Ken said. “They had to have help.”

Growing up on a farm as John did, Ken said he and his siblings chopped weeds in the fields and helped haul grains using the smaller equipment.

Ken said chicken and cattle were butchered on the farm.

Sometimes, dinner simply appeared.

“If a rabbit came on the farm, he’d get out the gun and we’d have rabbit,” Ken said.

As a boy, Ken showed cattle with 4-H and Future Farmers of America, except these cattle weren’t their farm cattle.

“We bought them,” Ken said, “so we’d have nice show animals at the fair.”

Earlier incident prompts active shooter training for Will County Clerk’s Office employees

JOLIET – An incident six months ago at the county’s main office building in downtown Joliet led to Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots’ 30-plus employees recently receiving active shooter training from staff at the Sheriff’s Office.

“We had an incident in our office six months ago. There was a person across the street at St. Vincent’s. There was an encounter over there and the police were looking for him,” Schultz Voots said Friday.

She said the man at one point ended up in the Will County Clerk’s Office in need of a birth certificate. When approached, the man started arguing with the security guard assigned to the county building that day, she said.

“This man ended up on the floor wrestling with the guy,” Schultz Voots said. “I hit my panic button and the police came seconds later.”

While the man – who was unarmed – was arrested without incident, Schultz Voots said she realized her staff should

be trained to properly handle such incidents.

“When this did happen at the counter, instead of running and going away, my staff was getting closer. They were curious. They were watching,” Schultz Voots said. “Nobody needs to be a martyr. Everybody works hard here and we want to make sure we’re able to go home at night.”

The Sheriff’s Office last week trained Schultz Voots’ office employees with the “Run-Hide-Fight” model created by the FBI and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Strengthened security

The possible need for heightened security and active shooter training for employees was a topic of discussion at last week’s Will County Executive Committee meeting, although there was no mention of the incident at the County Clerk’s Office.

Will County Board Speaker Jim Moustis, R-Frankfort, directed the County Executive’s Office to consider amending the county’s latest contract with Par Mar Security Services to in-

clude armed security guards.

The contract was recently renewed through June, but only includes a small number of unarmed and Taser-equipped security guards assigned to various locations.

Unarmed officers are paid $17.21 an hour, while Taser-equipped guards are paid $21.78 an hour. The county’s finance department noted at the meeting that armed guards could cost anywhere from $25 to $35 an hour.

Moustis said he also wants a new security assessment completed of all county office buildings. The last one was conducted years ago.

Mass shootings such as the one in San Bernardino, California – which resulted in 14 people dead during a holiday office party held by a county department – has spurred action from Will County and other local governments to take a closer look at current security setups.

“I think in light of incidents around the country ... it’s on people’s mind.

But we want our employees to know we think safety is the No. 1 priority,” said Nick Palmer, chief of staff for Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr.

John and his late wife Rose also were avid dancers, Ken said, as good as the dancers on “The Lawrence Welk Show.” John balked at his children taking out loans, preferring to lend money interest free for such purchases as down payments on homes.

That’s how profitable farming was for John. “[John and Rose] could not do enough for us financially,” Ken said.

“They put us through college and bought us brand-new cars when we got out of high school.”

In retirement, John cut acres of grass with his riding lawn mower, hung out at the Donut Den in Joliet and attended various events for family and friends. John was 96 when he died Nov. 12.

“He was still driving at 94,” Ken said.

WANDA WALL-CEGLAREK

Born: May 17, 1929 Died: Feb. 5, 2016

Wanda Wall-Ceglarek (Gawenda), age 86, of Joliet, passed away Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, at her home, with her family at her side after a brief illness.

Wanda was born May 17, 1929, in Swieta Wola, Poland and was uprooted with her family to Siberia at the start of the war. From there her life journey included spending several years in India, Rhodesia and Persia, finally settling in England where she met her first husband, Thaddeus Gawenda.

They emigrated to the United States aboard the Queen Mary in the mid-1950s. Thaddeus died in 1968.

She later married Frank Wall in 1974, and together they operated the International Inn Tavern on Hickory Street from 1981 until their retirement in 1992. Frank died soon after the sale of the business. In 1998, she married Stefan Ceglarek and they enjoyed their retirement years together until his passing suddenly in 2015 while visiting Poland.

Wanda was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She will be remembered for her loveliness and kindness to all. She loved to travel and her cooking was enjoyed by many.

She was a member of the former St. Thaddeus Parish and a current member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Surviving are her devoted daughters, Ann (Al Baumbach) Gawenda of Plainfield and Sofia (the late Adam) Napora of Elk Grove Village; one grandson, Nicholas (Jessica Carbone) Palumbo of Huntington, NY; one great-granddaughter, Olivia Palumbo; and an extended family in both Poland and England.

Funeral services for Wanda Wall-Ceglarek will be held Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016, at 10:15 a.m. from the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington roads, Joliet to Holy Cross Catholic Church for Mass at 11 a.m.

Aniseh Makhlouf, mother of Syria’s Assad, dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS BEIRUT – Aniseh Makhlouf, Syria’s former first lady and the mother of current President Bashar Assad, died Saturday, the presidency announced. She was 86.

A statement on the presidency’s official Facebook page says Makhlouf, the wife of the late President Hafez Assad, died in the Syrian capital Damascus.

Makhlouf was born in 1930 to a prominent and wealthy Alawite family from the coastal province of Latakia in the heartland of the religious minority, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

She married Hafez in 1957 when he was an air force lieutenant and rarely appeared in public after he became president in 1971. Although she kept a low profile, she was known to be the family matriarch and exerted strong influence over her husband and children.

“She was to prove a devoted wife and mother and Assad’s closest and most trusted confidante, providing him with a domestic environment of unquestioned respectability,” wrote Assad’s late biographer Patrick Seale in his book “Asad: The Struggle for the Middle East.”

Many considered her to be the first lady long after Hafez passed away in 2000.

At the beginning of the uprising against the Assad family rule in March 2011, she was reported to have pushed Assad to crack down hard on protesters. She was later reported to have left Syria to the United Arab Emirates, joining her only daughter, Bushra, who moved to the Emirates with her children after her husband, Assef Shawkat, was assassinated in a blast in the Syrian capital in July 2012. Shawkat was the deputy minister of defense.

Aniseh Makhlouf’s nephew, Rami Makhlouf, is one of Syria’s most prominent and wealthy businessmen. He controls the mobile phone network and other lucrative enterprises, and the protesters behind the 2011 uprising saw him as a symbol of corruption.

Long odds for school funding reform The ASSOCIATED PRESS SPRINGFIELD – Lawmakers of all stripes have pledged support in recent weeks for overhauling the state’s outdated school funding formula, a nearly 30-year-old system that nearly everyone agrees penalizes students in poorer districts.

But the issue once again faces long odds in this spring’s legislative session, amid a reluctance to balance the formula by taking away funds from more welloff school districts, especially during an election year. Some lawmakers say the issue can’t be dealt with until more funds are available to distribute.

That likely ties the matter to the eight-month-old budget standoff between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic leaders, and perhaps an agreement on restoring the state’s expired income tax hike.

“If you need votes [to approve an overhaul], it’s very difficult when you take away 30 percent of a district’s budget,” said Democratic Rep. Barbara Flynn Currie, a top lieutenant to House Speaker Michael Madigan.

Rauner, who pledged during his State of the State address last month to work with Democrats on improving education, appears to agree. “I won’t allow some school districts to give up money to give to other school districts,” he said last week.

CHICAGO – A Christian college near Chicago and a political science professor who wore a headscarf to show solidarity with Muslims have agreed to part ways.

Wheaton College said in a statement on its website Saturday that the college and Dr. Larycia Hawkins “have reached a confidential agreement under which they

will part ways.”

Hawkins, who’s Christian, was placed on leave in December when she posted on Facebook that Christians and Muslims worship the same God. College officials said at the time that her views were inconsistent with their “doctrinal convictions.”

The college – about 30 miles from Chicago – said then that it would begin proceedings to dismiss her, but the faculty protested. Hawkins said in the statement released Saturday that she had great respect for Wheaton college.

Juror: Evidence not strong enough to convict ex-prosecutor

QUINCY – A juror in the first-degree murder trial of a former Illinois prosecutor

accused of suffocating his sleeping wife said “most everyone felt he was guilty,” but the panel couldn’t agree on a conviction because of a lack of evidence.

Susie Koontz told the Herald-Whig the 10-woman, two-man jury deadlocked on the charge against ex-Adams County assistant state’s attorney Curtis Lovelace after deliberating 16 hours for two days.

Judge Bob Hardwick declared a mistrial Friday.

A retrial is set for May 31.

Lovelace, a former University of Illinois football captain and Quincy school board president, had pleaded not guilty to killing Cory Lovelace, his first wife.

He is being held in the Hancock County Jail on a $5 million bond.

A second bill, sponsored by Cullerton and passed by the Senate last fall, addresses a number of state education issues. It would phase out the current school funding system and create a task force to make a new one.

Revenue Democrats have been pushing a number of ways to raise revenues, some of which could be dedicated to education.

As part of talks to end the budget deadlock, they support restoring a temporary income tax hike that expired and making it permanent. Rauner said he is open to discussing it, but not until Democrats approve a number of reforms that he believes will improve the state’s business climate.

Madigan also has sponsored what has been dubbed a “millionaire’s tax” — legislation to impose an additional tax on incomes more than $1 million. He said the additional money would be put toward schools.

State officials already have been trying to find more school dollars. Rauner signed a bill last summer that added $269 million general state aid to pre-kindergarten through secondary education.

The Illinois State Board of Education has proposed transferring $305 million out of special education funds to boost general state aid. That measure also aims to increase school funding equity, but Democrats say they want the proposal better explained.

Illinois owes Springfield hospitals $76 million

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois owes Springfield’s two largest hospitals $76 million for the care of state workers, retirees and dependents, an amount that continues to grow because of the state’s budget impasse.

The State Journal-Register reported Memorial Medical Center is owed $46.3 million from the State Employees’ Group Health Insurance Program. The hospital also is owed $10.9 million in Medicaid bills.

Chief Executive Officer Edgar Curtis said the not-for-profit hospital isn’t going to lay off any workers, freeze hiring or downsize any programs that affect patients.

In its eight week of release, Walt Disney Co.’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” celebrated a pair of milestones over the weekend.

It surpassed $900 million at the North American box office and crossed $2 billion globally.

After Rubio stumbles, rivals see opening in N.H.

BEDFORD, N.H. – Marco Rubio’s uneven debate performance just days before Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary has emboldened a trio of governors seeking to stem his rise in the Republican race for president. But if Rubio’s rivals can slow him in New Hampshire, they are likely to leave the GOP with a muddled mix of establishment contenders and no clear favorite to challenge Donald Trump and Ted Cruz.

At the heart of the battle between Rubio and Chris Christie, John Kasich and Jeb Bush is whether the freshman Florida senator has the experience and policy depth to serve as president – or whether he’s simply a well-spoken lightweight.

Christie unleashed withering attacks against Rubio in Saturday’s debate, and the New Jersey governor tripped up Rubio by calling him out in real-time for his reliance on rehearsed talking points.

The morning after, Christie declared the Republican contest a changed race.

“There was a march amongst some in the chattering class to anoint Sen. Rubio,” Christie said on CNN’s State of the Union. “I think after last night, that’s over.”

Christie and his fellow governors need that to be the case, given that they’ve staked their White House hopes on New Hampshire. Without

a strong showing, each will face enormous pressure to drop out from Republican Party leaders eager to rally around a single candidate who can challenge Cruz and Trump, the top-two finishers in the lead-off Iowa caucuses.

Trump has held a commanding lead in New Hampshire preference polls for months. Cruz is in the mix with Rubio and the governors, although his campaign is more focused on the Southern states later in the primary calendar.

The prospect of Trump or Cruz winning the GOP nomination has set many Republican leaders on edge, and that anxiousness is only likely to increase should New Hampshire voters leave Rubio and the governors clustered together in the primary results, failing to anoint one as their preferred challenger to the front-runners.

Rubio emerged from Iowa looking as though he was that candidate, with a third-place finish in Iowa that was stronger than expected. Rival campaigns conceded privately in the days leading up to the debate he was pulling away from the governors. But the Florida senator stumbled in the debate when challenged about his qualifications.

For Barbara O’Brien, an undecided voter who had been considering voting for Rubio, it was enough to convince her he wasn’t the right choice.

“He kept saying the same thing over and over again,” said O’Brien, 67, from Manchester who is one of New Hampshire’s many independents.

Many of the black male students surveyed got their start as campus leaders through involvement in predominantly black organizations before taking on such roles in more mainstream school groups. As they became involved on their campuses, they said, their days were more structured, they were more focused and their grades improved.

“They would find people in these [mainstream] organizations to be study buddies with, to share notes with,” Harper explained. “It put them in the company of others who were also succeeding academically.”

In his four years at Lafayette, a small, private liberal arts college in Easton, Pennsylvania, Wanda has served as a resident assistant and president of the computer science and anime clubs. He said he took the leadership roles, in part, to help break down stereotypes.

“It gave me a sort of way ... to influence and talk to others,” Wanda said.

Recently, Wanda questioned an exchange he viewed as a racial slight: a white dorm resident’s dismissal of a rap song he was listening to. As an underclassman, Wanda said he doubts he would’ve challenged the comment.

The study challenges white students and leaders at these institutions to confront their biases, so that the responsibility for dispelling myths doesn’t fall entirely on black male students. Harper said universities have a role in disrupting environments that perpetuate racial bias, and that this is the most important takeaway from his study.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS PASS CHRISTIAN, Miss. – A shooting after a Mardi Gras parade in Pass Christian killed two men and wounded four other people Sunday, south Mississippi authorities said.

Carlos Bates, 29, of Gulfport, and Isiah Major III, 43, of Bay St. Louis both died at the scene, Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove told local news media. The victims’ hometowns are near Pass Christian on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast.

Four other people were hospitalized, Pass Christian Police Chief Tim Hendricks told the Sun Herald and WLOX-TV. Police received a call about a fight shortly after the last parade unit completed the route, and officers learned shots had been fired, Hendricks told

the newspaper.

The shooting occurred about two blocks north of the parade route in Pass Christian, a coastal city of 5,300 about 45 miles from New Orleans.

About 50,000 people had attended the St. Paul Carnival Association’s parade, Hendricks added.

Celeste Plaisance told the newspaper, “I think I heard 12 shots fired. We thought it was fireworks at first.” She added that when she saw someone had been shot and people were running away, she ran into her mother’s house.

The bodies, covered in yellow sheets, were near her mother’s steps.

Police drove through the yard to avoid disturbing police crime scene tape set up to keep bystanders away, she said.

The shootings occurred a day after parade accidents in south Louisiana injured a man and a woman.

Costs of closing, cleaning toxic coal ash pits grows clearer

EDEN, N.C. – Giant earthmoving machines beep and grind as they drop 17-ton scoops of coal ash and dirt into dozens of railroad cars lined up for two-thirds of a mile at a site along the Virginia-North Carolina border, where the country’s largest electricity company was responsible for one of the worst spills of the toxic, liquefied waste in U.S. history.

Duke Energy Corp. will ship 1.5 million tons of residue from decades of burning coal for electricity to a contracted landfill about 130 miles away in central Virginia. The utility built 2 miles of railroad track just to connect existing rail lines with the excavation site.

Once the contents of the pit roughly a quarter mile from the Dan River are emptied, it’ll be lined with waterproof material so heavy metals won’t filter into water underground or the river.

Then it will be refilled with much of the 1.5 million tons of liquefied coal ash taken from two other pits closer to the river’s edge. A burst pipe at one of them triggered the disaster two years ago this week and led officials to re-examine how they plan to cope with similar dangers at basins around the country.

The nation’s cleanup price tag, which utility customers may be asked to pay, already is pushing into the bil-

lions.

Many who live near coal ash pits fear the waste allows heavy metals to filter into their groundwater, and they say it’s past time to move the stuff. For the past 10 months, Duke Energy has been providing Deborah Graham’s family with bottled water after the state health department warned that her well water near another Duke site was contaminated with toxic heavy metals.

“We want it fixed,” said Graham, who wants the pits dug out and the waste moved from Buck power plant, her neighbor, 40 miles northeast of Charlotte. “No one should have to look at their faucet with fear.”

Coal ash byproducts include arsenic, chromium, lead, and boron. Duke Energy’s lawyers admit that over the past 90 years, coal ash has tainted groundwater below the unlined basins at its Buck plant, but they deny that it has polluted neighboring water wells like Graham’s.

The company last year agreed to pay $7 million to settle allegations of groundwater pollution at its coal ash pits. Duke Energy also pleaded guilty to criminal violations of federal water pollution laws and agreed to pay $102 million in fines and remediation.

More than 230 power plants in 33 of the country’s 48 continental states have coal-ash impoundments, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

PHILADELPHIA – James Wanda, a senior at Pennsylvania’s Lafayette College and one of two black computer science majors in his class, says at times he has felt pressure to succeed not just for himself, but for his entire race.

“I realized if I fail, in some ways, it means that people might take that as either confirmation that other black students will fail, or as a sign that they might fail,” said the 21-year-old from Arlington, Virginia.

For black students – especially men – at many mainstream colleges, these pressures, racial slights and other negative interactions can push them to transfer or even drop out. A new study in the Harvard Educational Review is highlighting how some black male college students are overcoming those challenges, and the reasons for their success.

Shaun Harper, a professor and executive director of the Center for the Study of Race and Equity in Education at the University of Pennsylvania, surveyed more than 140 students at 30 predominantly white public and private colleges.

Among his findings: While high-achieving black male students aren’t immune from racial stereotypes, they have found a way to push back against them – often through taking on confidence-building campus leadership roles that can change perceptions of them among their white peers and faculty.

“White students get to be students and learn; students of color have to deal with racial stress,” Harper said in an interview. “As they become more skillful at not internalizing low expectation, it frees them up from this distraction.”

Columbia University psychology and education professor Derald Wing Sue has researched the stress-producing slights and insensitivities tinged with bigotry, or microaggressions, cited in Harper’s study. He said the positive responses outlined in his research are a kind of social activism that gives black men a feeling that they have the ability to impact their environment.

Sentimental favorite Peyton Manning, Broncos win Super Bowl 50 SANTA CLARA – The romantics and true believers got their wish. The iconic Peyton Manning rode off into the California sunset with the Lombardi Trophy in one hand and a $2 million bonus check for winning the Super Bowl in the other.

He did not confirm his retirement, instead, asking for a little bit of time and promising to “kiss my wife and kids and drink a lot of Budweiser tonight while I think things over.”

It seems certain Manning will hang ’em up, although as his performance in this game made clear again – 13 for 23 for 141 yards, no touchdowns, one interception, a fumble and a 56.6 passer rating – his defense is winning with

In fact, as football games go, everything about Denver’s 24-10 Super Bowl 50 win was strange.

All of the ancillary events we’ve come to expect from the NFL’s super extravaganza were good.

San Francisco is a great city, and all of the locals were extremely gracious hosts.

The weather was perfect, 73 degrees

at kickoff under cloudless, crisp blue skies.

Lady Gaga absolutely nailed the national anthem, and the somewhat strange conglomeration of Coldplay, Beyonce and Bruno Mars made for a surprisingly satisfying halftime show.

There were issues, of course, but none worth griping about. Everything about Super Bowl 50 was great, except, unfortunately, for the game.

The 60 minutes of action on the field between the Broncos and Panthers was pretty much a hot mess, one of the sloppiest games the Super Bowl has seen in a long time.

Or was it just too great defenses making a ton of plays and the best de-

fense won?

Both Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware were dominant all day/night long, and in a bit of a shocker, Carolina’s Kony Ealy was the best player on the field with three sacks, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

All three were worthy MVP candidates.

The first quarter was near perfect for Denver, with Manning driving them 64 yards on 10 plays with the opening kickoff before settling for a 34yard field goal.

Broncos D dominates Panthers in Super Bowl win

The Associated Press SANTA CLARA – Peyton Manning gave himself a chance to have Super ending to his career, and Von Miller and the Denver defense made the plays to secure the title for the Broncos.

Manning and Panthers quarterback Cam Newton were harassed all game Sunday, and the Broncos made enough big plays for the 24-10 victory, Manning’s 200th and perhaps his last before retirement.

He wasn’t the star – game MVP Miller seemingly was everywhere on every Carolina play – but Manning really hasn’t been the headliner in this injury-shortened season.

Emulating his Broncos boss, John Elway, the 39-year-old Manning can ride off with the Lombardi Trophy after leading Denver to its third NFL title, first since 1999 – when Elway was the quarterback.

“I’ll take some time to reflect,” Manning said when asked if Super Bowl 50 is the end. “I got a couple priorities first. I’m going to go kiss my wife and my kids. ... I’m going to drink a lot of Budweiser tonight.

Take care of those things first.”

Denver’s suffocating defense kept Newton jittery all day. Despite wearing gold shoes before the golden Super Bowl, Newton couldn’t finish off a dynamic season in which he was the league’s MVP. Miller twice stripped him, once for a touchdown, the second time setting up a clinching TD. Denver’s top-ranked defense, the one that ran roughshod over Tom Brady in the AFC championship, simply wouldn’t let Newton get comfortable.

“It’s every one of these guys who go me to this,” Miller said.

Carolina’s potent offense that led the league with 500 points was held to its fewest points of the year, and Denver set an ignominious mark with 194 yards gained, the fewest for a Super Bowl winner.

So what: The Broncos (15-4) are champions and Manning is the first quarterback to win Super Bowls with two franchises, Indianapolis in 2007 was the other.

Manning finished 13 for 23 for 141 yards against a strong Carolina (17-2) defense that just couldn’t match Miller and company.

“This game was much like this season has been, testing our toughness, our resiliency, our unselfishness,” he said. “It’s only fitting that it turned out that way.”

“I feel very, very grateful. ... Obviously, it’s very special to cap it off

with a Super Bowl championship.”

Denver’s defense stole Carolina’s act. The Panthers led the league with 39 takeaways and were a plus-20 in turnovers. On the Super Bowl stage, though, Assistant Coach of the Year Wade Phillips got his first ring because his unit was impenetrable.

It was a far cry from two years ago, when the Broncos were routed

by Seattle 43-8.

Carolina has made a habit of sprinting out of the gate in the playoffs. This time, it was Denver that got the quick start.

Manning opened the game with an 18-yard completion to Owen Daniels, later hit Andre Caldwell for 22, and C.J. Anderson had a 13-yard run.

When the Panthers held, Brandon McManus kicked a 34-yard field goal.

The Panthers went nowhere on their first series, then their defense forced a three-and-out. It was the first of seven such aborted drives for

plays to lose and had plenty of chances to win.

Consider these numbers: The Panthers were 3 for 16 on third-down conversion attempts, while Denver was 1 for 14.

Newton was sacked seven times for 67 yards in losses; Manning went down five times for 37 yards.

Carolina committed 11 penalties for 87 yards, including six false starts.

Denver only had six penalties for 51 yards, but the game was really chippy with three of the Broncos flags being unnecessary roughness calls, and four of those on Carolina.

There were six turnovers, four by the Panthers and two from Denver.

Carolina managed only 315 yards of total offense; the Broncos only 194.

So we ponder the question again, was Super Bowl 50 really great defense or just a disappointing football game?

What we can say for sure is Newton, the extremely worthy MVP of the regular season, was awful, completing only 18 of his 41 throws, and his unwillingness to fight for his second fumble with 4:04 left in the game and his team still down only six will be discussed all winter and spring.

State champion Joliet West cheerleaders honored

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The past few days have no doubt created some memories that will last a lifetime for the members of Joliet West’s competitive cheerleading team.

After posting a 93.47 to finish second to Providence Catholic by .06 points in Friday’s preliminaries of the IHSA tournament in Bloomington, the Tigers turned in a season-best 94.7 in Saturday’s finals to win the large team title by 1.57 points over the Celtics.

As a result, coach Amy DiForti’s program became the first West team to win a state title since the Joliet Township schools went back to two programs. It became the first JT state champion since the 2000 softball squad and are just the fourth one representing the westside campus, with the only other girls title being won by the 1978 basketball team.

So it’s easy to see why the administration and athletics director Steve Millsaps made sure to honor the champs with a special awards ceremony Sunday at West’s auditorium.

After DiForti had led several teams to state and saw her 2014 squad fall just short of winning a trophy, the

Tigers were determined to not only capture their initial trophy, but also the title.

“We had to keep them really focused and we threw in some extra practice time to do that,” DiForti said.

“We practiced downstate both Friday morning and Saturday morning just to keep their brains in it, and that really helped a lot. And when they came out .06 away from first, I think that it was time to really get focused and to kick it up.

“Then Saturday felt amazing. I felt really good since it was the best that they’ve ever done. After we won, I was completely shocked. I said, ‘Oh, my gosh,’ a hundred times. I’m still not 100 percent believing that it’s reality.

This team was mentally strong. A lot of teams work to be physically strong, but it’s the mental part that you have to have. They’re a great group.”

After working at the lower levels the past few years, assistant Rebecca Stortz moved up to the varsity and got the chance to help coach a team that captured a title.

“I coached some of them their freshman year when they were on JV, so to be with them their senior year and watch them end like this was a great,” Stortz said. “I’m thankful I got

to work with these girls. To see them have all of their dreams come true this weekend was amazing.

“Amy does so much for these girls, so I’m so grateful to have been by her side and to help her to be a part of this.

We knew that they had exactly what it took. So we just needed them to come together and leave everything on the floor and that’s exactly what they did.”

Of the 23 squad members, only six are seniors. Those individuals are Daniella Casillas–Perez, Tyeler DelRose, Amina Lee, Carolina Soto, Brandy Teague and Brittney Wooldridge.

“We knew that we worked hard enough and always thought that it could happen, but when it did, it was unbelievable,” DelRose said. “Friday was amazing and we felt so good walking off the floor. All we thought about Friday night and Saturday morning was ‘.06, get better.’ After we performed on Saturday, we knew that we were going to be on the podium because we worked so hard for it. Every practice was fun for us and I love everyone on the team.”

Other squad members are Hope Benavidez, Brynn Becker, Leah Combs, Lea Delattre, Sandra Egizio, Makayla Hurd, Brooklynn Johnson, Taylor Latta, Mario McGowen, Jazmin Mo-

rales, Jessica Orr, Tia Roland, Lydia Schrock, Lexi Stariha, Taylor Styrczula, Julia Todd and Kayla Walker.

“We worked really hard the entire season so I’m not really surprised that we won,” Styrczula said. “But it was a crazy feeling since all of the emotions filled me. We’d gotten a lot of seconds, so we all pushed each other. The difference on the first day was .06, so on Day 2 we just gave it our all since it was our last time as a team. Everyone poured their hearts out on the mat and we did our best. We were a family and everyone loved each other.”

With six juniors, eight sophomores and three freshman team members, the future looks bright for the Tigers, who wouldn’t mind making regular trips to the awards podium at state.

“It’s so overwhelming,” Benavidez said. “We were in a pretty good spot going into Saturday and knew that all of the work that we’ve put in would be worth it if we gave it our all one last time. We are a very young team and it’s really cool that we can all come together and push each other and at the end of the day, we all want the same goal. I really loved the chemistry that we had together and no matter what, we always worked hard and stayed together.”

Chmielewski leads Lockport college contingent

dgoss@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – It suggests the Lockport football program is on the rise.

During last week’s national letter of intent signing day, the Porters celebrated the signings of offensive lineman Matt Chmielewski with Southern Illinois, defensive back Deiondre Taylor with Minnesota State-Moorhead, offensive lineman Quinn Polaski with McKendree and defensive back Heithon Hurdle with St Francis.

Dan Starkey, who completed his second season as the Lockport coach in the fall, said he anticipates having four or five others signing in the spring.

“We’re excited,” Starkey said.

“This is the second year in a row we have had kids go on to college, and to have a Division I [Chmielewski] and two Divisions IIs [Taylor and Polaski], that’s a good indicator of the direction we’re going.”

The Porters suffered some tough losses early last season but regrouped to win their final three games and finish 4-5. That was their first threegame winning streak in six years, and Starkey said it also was the first time in six years that Lockport beat Bolingbrook.

Former Lockport multi-sport standout Billy Reed was SIU’s leading receiver last season as a junior. He caught 56 passes for a 805 yards, a 14.4 average, and five touchdowns.

“I’m excited that there is a strong

connection between Lockport and SIU,” Starkey said. “I know Matt [Chmiewewski] was happy [Hill] was named the new head coach. It’s good that he will play with the other kids from this area, too. I believe he and Blake Parzych have worked out together and gotten to be pretty close.”

Chmielewski, who is 6-foot-4 and

weighed about 310 ponds last football season, is seeing playing time this winter with the Lockport basketball team. In addition, he went to state in the shot put last spring.

“Matt is an outstanding young man,” Starkey said. “He was a big part of our offensive line and why we were able to run the ball.”

Taylor is a regular with the Porters’ basketball team. He will be playing football in the same conference as his older brother Dexter, a Lockport graduate who is a receiver at Bemidji State.

“I’m a big proponent of a kid playing multiple sports, and Deiondre is a good example,” Starkey said. “He’s another great kid. He played everywhere for us, which I think was an asset for him. He is pretty much locked in as a corner for college.”

Polaski is 6-5, 290. He drew interest from several other schools. Purdue, for instance, wanted him to be a preferred walk-on.

“McKendree’s offensive line coach is their offensive coordinator,” Starkey said. “Other schools were interested in Quinn, but he really likes where he is going.”

Hurdle played strong safety for the Porters, though he missed some of the season with injury.

“He’s a leader,” Starkey said. “He’s really vocal. He has a lot of upside for college.”

CHAMPAIGN – Just over three minutes into the second half, Iowa’s Peter Jok stole the ball from Illinois guard Khalid Lewis and glided to the other end of the court for a two-handed dunk.

It was part of a 5-minute span after halftime in which the junior scored seven of the fifth-ranked Hawkeyes’ points, pushing their lead to 15 and delivering a blow the Illini wouldn’t recover from.

Jok finished with 23 points and Iowa (19-4, 10-1 Big Ten) coasted to a 77-65 victory.

Jok is playing with confidence, and doing that at both ends of the court, Hawkeyes coach Fran McCaffery said.

“I think you’re seeing a much more complete player,” McCaffery said. “You’re watching a guy who, when he was young, made some mistakes. And he’s not doing that anymore.”

Jok said Iowa, whose only serious tests Sunday came in the game’s opening minutes and the handful of times the Illini would later cut the lead to single digits, has grown up as a team.

“It’s because of our experience,” Jok said. “When teams are coming back, we don’t rush anything. We know what we have to do to win.”

The loss was the fifth in seven games for injury-plagued Illinois (11-13, 3-8).

When Jok wasn’t scoring, he was passing.

Moments later, he missed a jumper, and the ball bounced away from the rim with Illinois’ Malcolm Hill close behind it, scrambling for the rebound.

But Jok, laying on his back at the top of the key, found himself with the ball. Looking right, he saw Uthoff alone behind the 3-point line and fed him the ball.

Uthoff buried the shot and the Hawkeyes went up 56-38.

“That play in particular I think really crushed them,” Uthoff said. “It really took the air out of their sails.”

Iowa would push the lead to as many as 20 points midway through the half.

Iowa looked like the Big Ten title contender it is, and Illinois – which has settled into the back of the conference pack – did not.

“They’re good enough, they’ve got a chance to beat anybody,” Groce said of the Hawkeyes. “They look like they’ve played together a long time.”

Even when the Hawkeyes were off, it didn’t matter.

Illinois closed within 73-63 with 2:03 to play on a layup by Michael Finke. But the Illini could get no closer.

Dear Abby: Nine years ago, I married a man who has a son from a previous marriage.

“Eli” is now 26 and lives “on his own.” While he may live under a different roof than his parents, they support him financially.

My husband and I pay Eli’s car insurance, cellphone bill, toll tag, life insurance policy and whatever other things come up (passport, gym membership). Eli’s mom assists with all of his utility bills, in addition to depositing money in his account monthly. They even turned over Eli’s 529 tuition account to him.

I have tried explaining to my husband they are enabling Eli, and the umbilical cord should have been cut years ago.

Eli has never earned more than $12,000 a year, and has no desire to try because he has an endless flow of financial support.

His dad is retired but continues to work in order to help Eli – although he won’t admit it.

This is straining our relationship because when I bring up this issue, he feels I am attacking his son. Am I unrealistic to expect an adult to support himself? – Seeing Clearly In

• During a sleep terror, the sleeper may let out a bloodcurdling scream, sit bolt upright and attempt to fight or flee. The person may seem confused and agitated. After the spell is over, he or she is likely to go right back to sleep. Later, the person might not remember what happened.

If you consistently remember your nightmares, you’re probably not suffering from sleep terrors.

Medications such as benzodiazepines are sometimes prescribed for sleep terrors.

Hypnosis or a relaxation technique known as guided imagery also may help.

• If you have sleep-related panic attacks, you may awaken suddenly because of episodes of intense panic. You may experience a racing heartbeat, sweating, trembling, breathlessness, or the feeling something terrible is about to happen – as if you are about to die.

Anti-anxiety drugs are often useful for such panic attacks.

The cause of these sleep disorders is a mystery. They might seem like a trivial mystery, but I think if we understood them, we’d understand a lot more about how the brain works.

Dear Reader: There might be something you can do. The first thing you should know is everyone has nightmares occasionally. Just as we don’t really know why we sleep, we don’t really understand nightmares. We also don’t know why some people are more likely to have them.

Nightmares and two related phenomena – sleep terrors and sleep-related panic attacks – can make sleep more stressful than restful: • Nightmares can be a side effect of certain medications. These include antidepressants, narcotics and barbiturates. So talk to your doctor to see if any medication you’re taking might be contributing to your problem.

Nightmares also can occur if you stop taking certain drugs, including drugs used to treat them (such as benzodiazepines), if those drugs are stopped abruptly. Alcoholics who stop drinking often have nightmares.

If your frequent nightmares are not likely due to medicines you are taking, then counseling may help. You may be wrestling with problems that cause anxiety – and would cause anyone anxiety.

A type of behavioral therapy known as desensitization may help. In this therapy, you will be asked to recall the details of your nightmare and use relaxation techniques to overcome your fear. The therapist may guide you through typical dream sequences. For example, the therapist can help you imagine confronting or driving off a pursuer.

As I mentioned last week, when you are thinking about game, not slam, your goal should be to reach four hearts or four spades. If each of those contracts is deemed impossible, then you look toward three no-trump. Only if certain those three games are hopeless will you steer into five of a minor.

As an example, look at the North hand. You open one club, and partner responds one heart. What would you rebid?

After the preamble, the answer is easier than it might have been.

Bid two hearts, not two clubs or one no-trump. Then South will presumably jump to four hearts. (If he rebids three no-trump, and West leads a spade, South will have to guess well.)

How should South plan the play after a spade start to East’s queen?

This contract requires careful handling. If declarer wins the first trick with his ace, draws trumps, and takes the club finesse, he ought to go down. East should return a spade, and South will lose two spades, one diamond and one club. Instead, the simplest line is to run the club 10 at trick two. Even if East ducks, and declarer repeats the finesse, he is still safe. Probably, though, East will take his club king immediately and shift to a diamond, but South plays his king (or queen) and cannot lose more than one trick in each side suit.
