Questions arise over Plainfield Park District light bulb deal

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The company that tried to sell LED lighting to the Plainfield Township Park District – which a fellow board member has alleged is connected to board President Peter Hurtado – has been tough to trace.

Whether the company exists at all is hard to prove through invoices the company submitted to the park district.

The sale was made through Josue Solis & Associates. Park district invoices have contact information for the company as being at 10247 South Avenue O, Chicago, IL 60617. But a different company, Master Polishing & Buffing Inc., currently is at that address.

When called, a representative of Master Polishing & Buffing said there is no person or company by the name of Josue Solis at the location.

During a Jan. 29 special board meeting, Vice President Janet Silosky outlined a series of events that she said suggested Hurtado’s tried to force the sale of LED lights he owned to the park district.

She said the company selling the lights appeared to be linked to Hurtado’s daughter’s boyfriend.

Hurtado said Thursday he could not comment because of a pending investigation with the Will County State’s

different number for the company. A message left on the voicemail for that number was not immediately returned.

An email address also was listed for the company.

Emails sent to the address were also not returned.

Invoices for the lights show that Josue Solis & Associates sold the park district one High Bay 120 watt LED light set for $475 on Dec. 12 through former Executive Director Garrett Peck’s park district credit card.

There isn’t yet any indication where that light is, or if the payment was returned.

A bigger order of eight lights totaling $3,800 was bought from Josue Solis & Associates through Paypal on Masters’ park district credit card Jan. 8.

Silosky said in her narrative that Commissioner Peter Steinys was able to stop the transaction about Jan. 17. But records show Josue Solis & Associates sent a full refund for that order of lights Jan. 16.

Another invoice was sent by the company to the park district for 16 lights for $7,600, but there is no official transaction according to the documents obtained by the request.

Phone calls to Silosky, Masters and Director of Communications Doug Booth were not immediately returned.

Police charge Crest Hill man with burglary

“I gave my view the day the allegation came out,” Hurtado said. “I said these are serious accusations and I asked our attorney to contact the state’s attorney for an investigation.”

Hurtado also asked for media to not contact or harass anyone in his family about the allegations.

Other commissioners are concerned about the allegations.

“I think we have to determine whether there is more than wrongdoing, whether the law has been broken,” Commissioner Larry Newton said. “We’re still in the process of getting the smoking gun. Right now we haven’t found too much.”

Information obtained through documents requested through the Illinois Freedom of Information Act included all invoices for LED lighting handled by the parks maintenance department, and all details of Paypal transactions on Superintendent of Maintenance Joe Masters’ credit card.

“These documents show that the procedures need to be revised,” Newton said.

The Paypal invoice also listed a phone number for the company. But when called, the number goes to an automated message from magicJack, a telephone service provider.

CREST HILL – Police say one of the two teens arrested for going through unlocked vehicles early Thursday kicked out the window of a squad car and ran to a nearby parking lot before he was recaptured.

Chief Dwayne Wilkerson said about 1:40 a.m. a resident of Balsum Lane called police after seeing three men opening doors of vehicles parked outside.

seph J. DePalma, 18, of the 14100 block of Buckner Court in Plainfield, and Devon M. Stoltz, 19, of the 600 block of First Street in Colona, in the area, Wilkerson said.

“They had items in their possession that the owners of the vehicles were able to identify, including a necklace, a phone charger, a garage door opener, a flashlight and a multipurpose tool.”

The two men were taken into custody and brought back to the police station on Plain-

field Road.

“As Stoltz was being secured and taken into the station, DePalma kicked out the window of the squad and went through,” Wilkerson said.

Officers chased DePalma to the Ultra Foods parking lot where he was recaptured, Wilkerson said.

Both men were charged with burglary and possession of burglary tools. DePalma was also charged with escape, obstructing a police officer and vandalism.

Inwood Ice Arena to host annual ice show

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Inwood Ice Arena will showcase local talent when it hosts the annual ice show, Inwood 2014, on April 11 and 12.

The theme for this year’s show is the Olympics, coin-

ciding with the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

“Rehearsals will start soon,” said Deanna Tully, the coordinator of the show.

“We always try to do different things. The Olympics is always a good theme for our sport.”

Tully, also a manager for

the skate school at Inwood, said kids in the school are invited to participate.

“For some kids, this is their Olympic moment,” she said.

Katie Welz, an instructor at the skate school, said the Olympics are the main event for figure skating.

“You have the worlds com-

petition and other stuff,” she said. “But the Olympics is the main tournament.”

To be in the show, students need to have enrolled in a skating program for the Harvest or Winter sessions.

Skaters can’t miss more than two rehearsals for their group and every participant needs

to have a family member or friend volunteer at least one four-hour shift.

Applications can be filled out at the ice arena desk. Registration ends after Feb. 16.

Last year’s theme was “A Night at the Oscars.”

“It’s a very nice event for a reasonable price,” Tully said.

“People think that figure skating is just a skill,” said Schroeder, 14, of Joliet. “But to succeed you have to be passionate and work your best to get to the Olympics.”

As the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, start, local figure skaters and instructors in Joliet are excited to watch and see the pinnacle of their sport.

Illinois has had its share of recent figure skating success. Highland Park resident Jason Brown and Gracie Gold from Springfield are competing in the 2014 Olympics. They are trying to replicate the success of Naperville native Evan Lysacek, who won the men’s figure skating gold medal in the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Deanna Tully, an ice skating instructor who helps run the Skate School at Inwood Ice Arena, said Lysacek used to skate at Seven Bridges Ice Arena in Woodridge when she worked there.

“He was a real good skater at that age,” Tully said.

“I don’t watch too many of the competitions because of my schedule, but I think our skaters have a good chance to medal this year.”

Will County detects chronic wasting disease in deer

NEWS BRIEFS Illinois files appeal with FEMA over tornado aid SPRINGFIELD – The state of Illinois has appealed the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s denial of the state’s request for aid to local governments after deadly tornadoes in November.

State officials say the Illinois Emergency Management Agency filed the appeal on Thursday. Last month FEMA sent a letter to Illinois emergency officials denying federal help.

Thursday’s appeal includes $21.4 million for disaster-related expenses to nine counties affected by the Nov. 17 tornado outbreak. The original request that was denied included $6.1 million in expenses.

The state says the increase is due to additional costs for debris removal and infrastructure damage.

Coal City and Diamond were hit by a tornado that day, which left more than 200 structures damaged and sent four people to the hospital with injuries.

At least seven people were killed statewide and hundreds of homes and businesses destroyed. The federal government has previously approved millions of dollars in storm aid for Illinois residents.

THE HERALD–NEWS BRAIDWOOD – Chronic wasting disease has been detected in a deer in Will County for the first time, the forest preserve district said Thursday.

The diseased deer was found in the district’s Kankakee Sands Preserve in Braidwood, and the discovery could lead to the culling of 20 deer in the area in an effort to control the spread of the fatal disease.

The Forest Preserve District of Will County announced the discovery in a news release and said the board of commissioners will consider culling the 20 deer at its Feb. 13 meeting.

Chronic wasting disease in deer is not considered a threat to human health, although experts advise against eating deer with the disease, according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

The IDNR web site has a report on the disease and said it could threaten the deer population if allowed to spread for several years.

The IDNR has requested Will County cull additional deer in the Braidwood area in keeping with a state policy aimed at maintaining herd health and reducing the spread of the degenerative neural disease, the forest preserve district said.

While chronic wasting disease has not been detected in Will County previously, deer in adjacent counties have tested positive for the disease, the district said.

Ten cases of the disease have been found in Grundy County.

The culling would occur at Kankakee Sands and adjacent preserves located south of Illinois Route 113 and west of the Kankakee River.

Deer in the Will County preserves are culled by sharpshooters who are part of the district’s Deer Management Program.

The program for 2013-14 had already called for 21 deer to be culled from the Kankakee Sands area, the district said.

The Department of Natural Resources web site reports 408 cases of chronic wasting disease among Illinois deer since 2003.

Other counties next to Will with cases of chronic wasting disease include: Kane, 15; Kendall, 1; and DuPage, 1.

Most cases occurred in Boone, DeKalb, McHenry and Winnebago counties.

Lockport debates replacement of vehicle tax with electricity

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – City officials want to replace a vehicle sticker program they say is inefficiently funding for capital projects.

The program provides roughly $280,000 per year in revenue through vehicle sticker fees.

City officials are examining alternatives, including taxes on utilities such as telecommunications, natural gas and electricity.

Another is dropping the program altogether.

But Mayor Steve Streit so it’s hard to give up so much revenue “when we have upwards of $30 million plus in infrastructure issues to deal with.”

Some city officials favor an electricity excise tax based on monthly electricity usage by residential, commercial and industrial users.

During Wednesday’s meeting, City Finance Director Erik Brown gave a

presentation, along with a memorandum explaining the problems with the vehicle sticker program and the potential alternatives.

The program is more than 30 years old and requires residents to purchase a sticker issued by the city for each vehicle he or she owns. The standard fee is $20 per vehicle and senior citizens can

receive discounts.

Because Lockport’s population has risen over the years, the program has become labor intensive for the police department and city hall, according to city officials.

Ultimately, some city officials are saying it has proven to be an inefficient use of taxpayer dollars.

Switching to a tax on utilities and ending the sticker fee would free up employees at the police department and city hall, they said.

City officials concluded a tax on telecommunications or natural gas would be unreliable and recommended the electricity tax. The revenue could exceed income from the sticker program, but it should have an overall lesser impact on residents because

it would be shared by nonresidential customers, they said.

Fourth Ward Ald. Denise Marynowski said the electricity tax could be a problem for seniors with fixed income or people who have not paid into the vehicle sticker program before.

“I hate utility taxes and I would rather see that you put on a referendum and ask the people, ‘Would you want to substitute that 2 percent electric tax on your electric bill and get rid of the vehicle stickers?’ ” she said.

City officials and council members plan to discuss how to replace the vehicle sticker program at future committee of the whole meetings. They also plan on gaining feedback from residents on possible solutions.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys agreed Thursday to set a hearing next month for Charles “C.J.” McCullum, 22, who is charged with the murder of Jeanie Parker.

A previous hearing before Judge Carla Alessio-Policandriotes found McCullum is fit to Charles stand trial.

McCullum Legal sources said having a hearing to determine his mental state is the next routine step in the judicial process.

On the night of March 20, 2013, McCullum and Parker, 54, argued in their Fifth Avenue home, police said.

McCullum allegedly choked his mother until she passed out, left the house, brought back a knife and stabbed her, causing the knife to bend in her body.

Parker’s body surfaced three weeks after she disappeared, by which point her son had been charged with murder, aggravated battery and concealing a homicide.

• Robert Flider was confirmed to head the Illinois Department of Agriculture, a job that pays at least $133,273 a year.

• Careen Gordon now earns $88,200 as an attorney with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

• Michael Smith makes about $95,000 as a member of the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board. The board meets once a month and members can attend by phone.

• David Miller, who left office after losing his bid for state comptroller, now has a $117,000-a-year job with the Illinois Department of Public Health.

• John O’Sullivan was hired in May 2011 as a regional superintendent with the Cook County Forest Preserve District. The job pays $85,704 a year. He was fired five months later.

• Michael Carberry was hired by Cook County at $100,000 a year as deputy director in the county’s Department of Facilities Management.

game anymore. That’s how we got the income tax raised in the first place, which is ridiculous,” she said. “[The lame-duck session] is when you seal garbage legislation that would not pass any other time. It’s not good. It’s not good state government.”

The state’s abolition of the death penalty, the 67 percent tax hike and the indoor smoking ban were all passed during lame-duck sessions, which falls between election day and inauguration day.

Kosel, who voted against the income tax increase in 2011, said she won’t allow the fact she’s not running for re-election make her vote out of line with people in her district.

“I’m going to be a lame duck, but I will not change the philosophy that I spent

for 18 years representing the people of this district. What a terrible way to go out,” Kosel said.

The proposal would move the inauguration date from January to December, and require the General Assembly to conclude their work by election day.

The new bill would prohibit the outgoing General Assembly from convening unless a special session is called with approval from the governor and each of the four legislative leaders.

As for the possibility of this bill passing the House or Senate, Kosel weighed in, saying it’s highly unlikely it will get out of committee.

But lawmakers filing this bill isn’t “just for show,” she said.

“You can’t say you’re not

going to file stuff like this just because you know it won’t get out of committee,” she said. “You’ve got to push.”

Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Terrant, D-Plainfield, on the other hand, suggested the GOP’s push to eliminate lame-duck sessions really is all for show.

“Personally, I think it’s just showboating. It’s political grandstanding,” she said.

Bertino-Tarrant said she doesn’t support eliminating the lame-duck sessions, arguing it’s unfair to assume people are going to vote for a controversial bill they once lobbied against just because they’re headed out the door.

“I don’t understand why people automatically assume people are going to make bad decisions because they’re on their way out. Really, people make bad decisions when

they’re still in office,” she said.

But lawmakers pushing for the bill argue those leaving office have nothing to lose politically – and can be persuaded with the promise of government jobs.

Robert Flider, D-Mt. Zion, and Careen Gordon, D-Morris, campaigned in 2010 against the tax increase, but were defeated at the polls. On the last day of the lame-duck session, they voted for it.

Days later, Gov. Pat Quinn nominated Gordon for an $88,000-a-year seat on the Illinois Prisoner Review Board.

She withdrew after Senate Republicans promised to grill her over the perceived quid pro quo, but Quinn later appointed her to a similar-paying job as an attorney for the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, which did not require Senate confirmation.

Quinn the following year nominated Flider to head the Illinois Department of Agriculture, a job that commands a $133,273 salary.

Quinn’s press office has repeatedly denied that the jobs were given as rewards for approving the tax increase.

Schroeder has been ice skating since she was 5 years old. Her personal goal is to eventually skate in the Olympics. So she practices two times a week and has a personal coach to help her reach higher levels of skating.

“I think it’s everyone’s dream to make the Olympics,” Schroeder said. “But

skating is fun too. I like the different ways you can move your body, and I get good ex-

ercise too.”

Young skaters, who might not remember when Lysacek won the gold medal by a 1.31 point margin over Russian Evgeni Plushenko, and their parents have found a greater appreciation of figure skating.

“We’ll know what the moves mean and what they’re talking about now,” said Channahon resident Tracy Robson, whose 7-year-old daughter Emma skates at Inwood. “We know from what Emma does, it just takes a lot of hard work and consistency.”

Over the years, skating instructor Amanda Donisch,

who competed in United States Figure Skating Association events until she turned 18, has seen figure skating get more popular.

“I started teaching after that because I wanted to give back, to share my knowledge with kids,” she said. “The rules have changed over the years that maybe helped make the Olympic sport easier for people not familiar with it.”

Local skaters and residents can have their own Olympic moments at Inwood’s annual Ice Show on April 11 and 12.

The show’s theme this year is the Olympics. Skaters can register at the ice arena by Feb. 16.

Illinois House Republicans are trying to rid the state’s longstanding tradition of using lame-duck sessions to pass controversial legislation that otherwise might not stand a chance.

The post-election sessions, opponents argue, create a window of opportunity for political leaders to ask lawmakers on their way out of office to vote for unpopular legislation.

Bill sponsor Rep. John Anthony of Plainfield is one Republican behind the push to end lame-duck sessions, citing a fear that lawmakers will use that window of opportunity to make permanent the “temporary” 67-percent tax hike increase set to expire Jan. 1, State Rep. 2015.

Suspect loses traction

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police say a self-admitted gang member tossed a loaded handgun before running from officers early Thursday – but slipped and fell in the snow before he could get away.

“There’s one good thing from the weather lately,” Cmdr. Al Roechner said after the arrest of Charles E. Stevens, 19, of the 1100 block of Magnolia Avenue.

Roechner said tactical officers were driving about 12:15 a.m. in the 1300 block of Arthur Avenue when they saw Stevens walking in the middle of the street.

“They also saw he had what appeared to be the butt of a handgun sticking out from the pocket of his sweatshirt,” Roechner said.

When police turned back, Stevens threw the gun to the ground and started running.

Officers chased him to

the back of a yard in the 1200 block of Arthur where he fell and was placed under arrest, Roechner said.

The loaded 9-millimeter handgun found at the scene had been reported stolen from Memphis, Tenn.

Stevens was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a firearm by a street gang member, possession of a stolen firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm and obstructing a police officer.

Light out leads to drug arrest

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police say a man who was stopped for driving with a headlight out Wednesday had a quarter-pound of marijuana in his car.

About 10:20 p.m. Thomas D. Gulas, 22, was driving on Larkin Avenue when a police officer saw a light out on his silver 2008 Honda Accord, according to Cmdr. Al Roechner.

The officer had Gulas pull over into a parking lot at Jefferson Street and Larkin Avenue and smelled cannabis when he approached the car.

“Gulas said the smell was because he had been with people who were smoking marijuana earlier, but he could search the car,” Roechner said.

Officers reportedly found a book bag with 139 grams of cannabis in the backseat, a tube containing another 17 grams, a pipe, a coffee grinder with marijuana residue and a small amount of marijuana in Gulas’ pocket.

Gulas was arrested on charges of delivery of marijuana, marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also ticketed for the broken headlight.

Fire department urging citizens to clear hydrants, could help fight fires THE HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – The fire department wants residents to help shovel.

Some of Joliet’s 8,000 fire hydrants have been covered with snow, and Joliet Fire Chief Joseph Formhals on Thursday issued a call for

help in clearing them off.

The snow-buried hydrants could become an issue if they are hard to find at the scene of a fire, Formhals said in a news release. Finding the hydrant and shoveling it out would cost time while a fire is burning.

a unique winter in that “the melt-off of the snow has been absent this year. This year has been moderate to heavy snowfall for the city, followed by extremely cold temperatures. Due to the weather combination many fire hydrants in the city are now covered by snow.”

Formhals said fire crews have been shoveling out “priority hydrants” located near schools, hospitals, high rises and large apartment complexes. But there are more than 8,000 hydrants in Joliet, and fire crews cannot get them all.

The fire chief also advised parents to keep children from

digging into large piles of snow to create snow “forts.”

The weight of the snow could cause the pile to collapse and trap a child inside.

Other local fire departments and fire protection districts, including Plainfield, have made similar requests of their residents.

She was the wife of the late LeRoy C. Benson and they shared 56 years together.

She was awarded a life membership in the P.T.A. by the Raynor Park P.T.A., attended Provena Saint Joseph's Senior Spirit exercise classes and loved to play bridge with her many

Mick attended St. Patrick Grade School and graduated from Joliet Catholic High School. He served in Germany as an MP with the US Army. For 34 years he worked as the “Candyman” as Buyer and General Manager for Eby Brown Company in Joliet. He most recently served as Chief Deputy Assessor for the Joliet Township Assessors Office.

Frances E. Reynolds (Southcomb) (nee Cohan), age 82, passed away peacefully, Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Venice Regional Medical Center, Venice, FL with family at her side.

Born June 15, 1931 in Joliet, to Francis J. and Doris E. (nee Astbury) Cohan, she was a graduate of St. Francis Academy and St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a Registered E.R. Nurse for many years and retired from the State of Illinois.

Frankie spent many retirement winters in the Englewood/Venice, FL area. She was a member of Myakka Pines Golf Club in Englewood, FL, and was an avid golfer who achieved a hole-in-one.

She was a member of both the Golf Coast and the Joliet Park District women's leagues. She was also a member of the Joliet Elks.

Family was very important to Frankie. She enjoyed attending family birthday parties, get togethers, and grandchildren's sporting events. She was the proud Matriarch of her entire family.

Surviving are her children, Cindy (John) Foster of Fort Collins, CO, Ken (Jeannine) Southcomb of Joliet, IL, Dan (Carol) Southcomb of Joliet, IL, and Sheri (Randy Keen) Curran of Old Hickory, TN; 13 grandchildren, Jen (Eric) Webb, Kayde (Tom) Foster-Cody, Leslie (Lori) FosterMorrill, Erica (Chris) Kenney, Scott Southcomb, Ashley (Ryan) Gremillion, Jill (Brad) Wieher, Kyle (Tina) Southcomb, Ryan (Heather) Southcomb, Michael Southcomb, Melissa (Troy) Fatlan, Kevin (Karen) Curran, and Matt (Britt) Curran; 22 1/2 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

WASHINGTON – Speaker John Boehner on Thursday all but ruled out passage of immigration legislation before this fall’s elections, saying it would be difficult for the Republican-led House to act on the issue that President Barack Obama has made a top domestic priority.

In his most pessimistic comments, Boehner blamed the stalemate on widespread skepticism that Obama would properly enforce any immigration reforms that Congress approved. The GOP leader didn’t mention that his own members have balked at acting on the contentious issue, which could enrage core conservative voters in the midterm election year.

“The American people, including many of our members, don’t trust that the reform we’re talking about will be implemented as it was intended to be,” Boehner told reporters at his weekly news conference. “The president seems to change the health care law on a whim whenever he likes. Now, he is running around the country telling everyone he’s going to keep acting on his own.”

Just last week, Boehner and other House Republican leaders had unveiled broad principles for immigration changes, including legal status for the estimated 11 million immigrants living here illegally, tougher border security and a shot at citizenship for children brought to the country illegally.

Keystone XL oil pipeline has merit

The Obama administration’s dilemma about whether to approve building the Keystone XL oil pipeline is coming down to a simple choice: Does the president embrace pragmatism or symbolism?

In the wake of the U.S. State Department’s finding last week that the 1,179-mile pipeline from west-central Canada to Nebraska is unlikely to alter climate change, Obama should embrace pragmatism and signal to the rest of his administration that he supports construction.

Doing so could help this proposal, already under federal study for five years, get through the eight federal agencies still examining it.

While each agency has its own role to fulfill, the State Department’s final environmental assessment released Friday found no major environmental objections, which includes the standard Obama himself mentioned in June: That he would back the project if this report showed it “does not significantly exacerbate the climate problem.”

As international news reports have noted, the assessment determined denying the project would have no impact on climate change because oil extraction in Alberta will continue. Producers will simply use other means – namely rail – to transport their product to markets.

In fact, the report even indicated using rail instead of the pipeline could increase greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent or more. Couple that with the horrific rail accidents lately involving oil trains in North Dakota and Quebec and safety also becomes a primary reason to build the pipeline.

The $5.4 billion pipeline will carry 830,000 barrels of oil a day from Alberta through Montana and South Dakota to Nebraska, where it would connect with existing pipelines to get oil to Texas and the Gulf Coast.

The project is expected to create 1,950 annual construction jobs in those states and contribute about $3.4 billion to the U.S. gross domestic product.

It would generate about 50 jobs once in operation.

And not to be overlooked, it would mean America’s importing of oil could come from its peaceful neighbor, not violent places such as the Middle East.

All those reasons are why Obama should back the pipeline.

Doing the opposite – rejecting it – simply puts political symbolism misleadingly ahead of a sound policy. How so? Environmentalists will cheer Obama for a “victory” in the battle to curb climate change even though his administration’s own environmental assessment shows that’s not the case.

As this board has noted previously, finding reasonable replacements to fossil fuels is a worthy and important search. But it’s also a long and difficult one, which makes pragmatism today an essential component of this nation’s energy policies.

It’s time to add more hours to the day I’m a little late getting this week’s submission written.

I’m so late that I’m writing last week’s column this week. This week’s copy may have to wait till next week.

If it’s any consolation to you, this is not the only chore that has had to wait while I raced the clock to finish my first edition of the Lebanon Advertiser. The laundry is piled up and the house is more of a wreck than it normally is.

Now that I’m self-employed, or, in some ways, self-unemployed, my world has changed in ways I never imagined. For one thing, I no longer have a bedtime. When you don’t have to be at work at a certain time, clocks and calendars lose their relevance.

I’m more organized than I look, but self-discipline is lacking. There have been several times this past week when I’ve looked up from the computer to

On the flip side, I no longer have days off including weekends. Unfortunately, my boss, which is me, doesn’t pay time and a half for overtime. I’ve been working so many hours that it has even cut into my time spent playing Words With Friends on Facebook.

I’m circulating a petition to add more hours to the day – at least to Mondays. There are only 24 hours in a day, and I used them all Monday. I didn’t get everything done the way I wanted it, and I found a few

mistakes when the paper came out in print.

Next week is another opportunity to get it right.

I’m getting a lot of help at the coffee shop, where I don’t get to spend nearly as much time as I used to. I’m writing this there now. The only way I can justify spending any time there is to take my work with me.

Everybody has an idea of what ought to be in a newspaper. As I listened to the myriad of ideas, it occurred to me that I was the only one in the room who has ever actually put out a newspaper. If I let the guys at the shop have a go at it, you’d see a newspaper filled with girlie pictures and sex advice columns.

Thanks, guys, but I think I got this.

People are passionate about their newspapers, though. Moreso than I imagined.

Staying within restraints caused NLFPD to suffer To the Editor: Recently there was a letter (“Tax increase is not needed,” Jan. 31, 2014) about the New Lenox Fire Protection District’s cash on hand and our budget.

The numbers used were correct, however there was quite a bit of information not mentioned. The NLFPD wants to make sure that your readers, our district’s residents, have the most accurate information possible. According to the last treasurer’s report the tax receipts for 2013 were $4,272.984. What the letter failed to report is that our expenditures for 2013 totaled $5,553,076. The fire district spent $1,280,091 more than it received in tax revenues.

Additional revenues, such as loans, grants and non-resident billings, enabled the department to meet our financial responsibilities.

Cash on hand on Dec. 31 is misleading in that the NLFPD does not start receiving property tax dollars until the middle of June.

It’s especially enjoyable when it’s just another step along the way during a memorable season.

That was the case Thursday as Joliet Catholic Academy’s girls basketball team recognized four seniors who are on its state-ranked squad. Brittany Abington, Christina Ekhomu, Alex Legg and Jasmine Lumpkin were honored before their team’s nonconference game with Tinley Park.

The foursome also helped the Angels jump out to a 45-13 halftime lead over the Titans before settling for an 81-38 victory.

“This is what senior night is all about,” Abington said.

“The seniors are getting ready to graduate and these might be some of the last games that we ever play here.

“So I just wanted to have a good showing and help my team win this game so that we could get ready for next week and the games after that.”

Lumpkin scored a gamehigh 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds while blocking

two shots to pace the 22-1 Angels.

Abington chipped in with 10 points, Ekhomu added nine points and Legg had eight points for JCA, which plays Marian Catholic Wednesday in a key East Suburban Catholic Conference game.

“It was senior night and I had a lot of fun and was able to play a lot,” Legg said. “And it was nice to win this game. It’s all about fine-tuning for our next game, which is a big one since it’s for the conference championship.”

Jnaya Walker scored 10 points for the Angels, Mia Farrell added seven and Nicole Ekhomu finished with five.

JCA jumped out to a 26-7 lead after one quarter, as Lumpkin scored 15 points in the first eight minutes. She added six more before the break to help the hosts grab a 32-point advantage.

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com The Joliet Catholic Academy girls basketball team has enjoyed an outstanding season, worthy of being considered a candidate for the Class 3A state championship.

The Angels, who have lost only to Class 4A Whitney Young, will begin their quest at the Morris Regional, where they are the No. 1 seed. The IHSA announced the seeds, the result of online voting among the coaches, Thursday for the girls 3A and 4A regionals/sectionals.

The 1A and 2A seeds were revealed earlier. The two smallest classes begin regional play Monday, while the two largest classes will begin the postseason a week earlier.

The Morris Regional is a five-team event. Coal City is the No. 2 seed, followed by Providence, Lincoln-Way West and Morris. The winner will advance to the Lincoln-Way West Sectional. The winner there will play in the Romeoville Supersectional.

The only other area 3A team is Peotone, which is No. 2 behind regional host Bishop McNamara.

The majority of Class 4A area teams are in the Joliet Central Sectional, with regionals scheduled at Plainfield North, Plainfield South,

Romeoville and East Aurora.

Bolingbrook drew the No. 2 seed in the 22-team sectional.

Neuqua Valley is No. 1. Young is the likely opponent for the survivor in the Hinsdale Central Supersectional.

The next area team seeded is No. 11 Joliet Central.

Lemont is 12, Lockport 13, Romeoville 15, Joliet West 16, Plainfield South 17, Plainfield

Central 18, Plainfield North 19 and Plainfield East 20.

Each regional must contain the host team, one of the 1 through 4 seeds and one of the 5 through 8 seeds.

In the 4A Bloom Sectional, Lincoln-Way East is the No. 3 seed behind Homewood-Flossmoor and Marian Catholic while Lincoln-Way Central is 13th.

Downstate, the format calls for preset regionals. Minooka is in the six-team Normal Community regional as the No. 2 seed behind Bradley.

The winner will advance to the Edwardsville Sectional.

The Class 2A regional of local interest is at Ottawa Marquette, where Seneca is No. 1 followed by Aurora Christian, Ottawa Marquette, Reed-Custer and Wilmington.

Aurora Christian will be the sectional host, and the sectional winner will play in the Monmouth Supersectional.

Dwight will host a fiveteam regional in Class 1A, and the Trojans are the No. 3 seed.

Newark is the top seed and Gardner-South Wilmington is No. 5.

Slammers land former Triple-A infielder STAFF REPORTS JOLIET – The Joliet Slammers have signed five players in less than a week, highlighted by former Memphis Redbirds infielder Jose Garcia and returning players Kolin Conner and Grant DeBruin.

The Slammers also have agreed to terms with outfielders C.J. Epperson and Ryan Hutchison.

Garcia, 25, signed as an undrafted free agent with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2008 and climbed the ladder to Triple-A by the 2011 season.

He hit .282 over three seasons with the Double-A Springfield Cardinals and .292 with the Redbirds in parts of two seasons.

“Jose is a big addition for us,” Slammers manager Jeff

Isom said. “He’s athletic and has displayed that he can play multiple positions for a club with success at the plate as well. He is an exciting type of player.”

Garcia spent last summer playing for the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and the El Paso Diablos, both of the independent American Association.

He hit .320 with 25 steals and 45 RBI in 86 games

Kowalski’s catch measured 52 inches long.

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com Jeff Bailey made his debut as boys bowling coach at Plainfield South in the best way possible, with the Cougars winning the 2010 IHSA state championship under his guidance.

Now, after four seasons with South, Bailey is in his first season as girls coach at Joliet West. Forgive him if he occasionally wonders whether history can repeat.

The Tigers begin what they hope will be a trip to state Saturday when they host the Joliet West Regional at Town & Country Lanes, where Bailey is the manager.

Morris, Minooka and Plainfield South are other area entries that on paper have a shot at advancing to next week’s Moline Sectional. Joliet Central and individuals from Reed-Custer also are in the field. The top four teams and top 10 individuals not on those teams will advance to Moline, where many of the state’s best teams will gather.

Bolingbrook, Plainfield Central, Plainfield East, Plainfield North and Romeoville will compete at the Bolingbrook Regional, which also will send four teams to Moline.

Regionals hosted by Sandburg and Andrew, meanwhile, will advance four teams each to the Morgan Park Sectional. Lockport and Lemont are at Sandburg and Lincoln-Way West, Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way East and Peotone are at Andrew.

Minooka, coming off winning the Southwest Prairie Conference championship, has made four straight trips to state under coach Frank Yudzentis. Morris won the Northern Illinois Big 12 East tournament.

“We feel we have a good fighting chance to get to state,” Bailey said. “We took conference away from Lockport, which I believe held the crown the last three years.

“We have great momentum coming out of conference. Lockport has another strong team and defeating them was huge for us. We’re really focused now.”

The Tigers’ regular lineup includes seniors Julie Kowalski and Desiray Keigan and sophomores Gracie Plese, Taylor Bailey and Melissa March. Kowalski averages 212, Plese 204, Taylor Bailey 203, March 190 and Keigan 185. Taylor Bailey is

the coach’s daughter. All but Keigan were all-conference.

“We’ve kind of been coasting through the season and we’re hitting our stride now,” Jeff Bailey said. “The key for us will be staying together as a team, staying in the game mentally. It’s all mental. We can’t get down on ourselves if we have bad frame or bad game.”

Bailey said the regional offers “quite a bit of competition. Minooka, Morris, Plainfield South and us are all good teams.”

The Tigers have the perceived advantage of bowling at home in the regional (Town & Country also is Minooka’s home). West finished second in the 44-team StrikeFest at T&C earlier this season.

“We have great momentum coming out of conference. Lockport has another strong team and defeating them was huge for us. We’re really focused now.”

Let Putin’s games begin

By ANGELA CHARLTON The Associated Press SOCHI, Russia – It’s designed to celebrate a millennium of Russian might and this country’s modern rebound, and kick off two weeks of extraordinary human endeavors and planetary sportsmanship.

But Friday’s ceremony opening the Sochi Olympics, more than anything, will be about one man: Vladimir Putin.

He charmed and strongarmed his way to hosting the games at a summer beach resort that he envisioned as a winter paradise. He stared down terrorist threats and worldwide wrath at a scarcely veiled campaign against gays.

He has shrugged off critiques that construction of the most costly games in Olympic history was both shoddy and corrupt.

Ballet, man-made snow and avant-garde art will make an appearance at Sochi’s opening ceremonies, although as with all past opening ceremonies, the details are under wraps.

They can’t really compete with the cinematic splendor of the London Olympics or

the pyrotechnic extravaganza of Beijing, but then again, the Winter Games are usually more low-key.

No matter. All Putin needs is an event that tells the world “Russia is back.”

It’s a message meant for millions around the world who will watch the show – and meant for his countrymen, too.

Russians will form the bulk of the spectators in Sochi for the Olympics, a people whose forebears endured centuries of oppression, a revolution that changed the world, a Soviet experiment that built rockets and nuclear missiles but struggled to feed its people. Russians who sometimes embrace Putin’s heavy hand because they fear uncertainty more than they crave freedom, and who, despite inhabiting the largest country in the world, feel insecure about their place in it.

They’re pinning especially high hopes on their athletes, once a force to be reckoned with and the pride of the nation. They were an embarrassment at the Vancouver Games in 2010, with just three gold

medals and a string of doping busts.

This year, Russia has cleaned up its game and is presenting hundreds of skaters, skiers and other champions in the arenas on Sochi’s seashore and in the nearby Caucasus Mountains slopes of Krasnaya Polyana.

While the United States, Norway and Germany are seen as leading medal contenders, Russia will be pushing hard to bring home a bundle for the home crowd.

Putin put on the pressure even as he tried to motivate them this week: “We are all counting on you.”

If there was any doubt, it was erased on the first evening of competition, as a booming crowd of Russians shouted “Heroes” at world champion pairs Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov as they, along with men’s skater Evgeni Plushenko, pushed Russia into the early lead in the new competition of team figure skating.

“It’s pressure, but this pressure helps us,” Volosozhar said. “They push us very hard,” Trankov said.

Hawks bonding on road

By MARK POTASH mpotash@suntimes.com GLENDALE, Ariz. – Asked what he did during the Blackhawks’ two-day break in Las Vegas last week, Brent Seabrook just smiled and shook his head – the universal sign for ‘”What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas,” apparently.

“There’s a lot to do in Vegas,” Seabrook said Thursday after the Hawks practiced at Jobing.com Arena in preparation for Friday’s game against the Phoenix Coyotes. “Get away from the game a little bit and have a little break. We’ve played a lot of games. The Blackhawks have done a good job of breaking it up and give back to us a little bit and have a little fun. I think it’s good.”

The Vegas trip isn’t the sole reason the Hawks have started to recapture their early season form through five games of the six-game “ice show” road trip. But even coach Joel Quenneville acknowledged the side trip as a factor in the team’s resurgence that not coincidentally has occurred during a two-week road trip.

“It’s good bonding for the guys [on the road],” Quenneville said. “It seems like you get that excitement on the bench and in the locker room.

The guys are together 24/7. We’ve got a close-knit group here where spending a little extra time with one another, there are no distractions. Everybody’s focused in the right areas.

“I think that diversion [of] taking the group to Vegas certainly is a nice change of scenery. It’s healthy for [everybody].”

Heading into the trip, the Hawks were 4-3-5 in January. ‘’We were kind of wondering going into it how we were going to be,” Quenneville said.

The Hawks have responded by getting better every step of the way.

They’re 3-0-2 on this trip, with three victories in their past four games. In their 2-0 victory over the NHL-leading, but slumping, Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday night, the Hawks were at their championship finest – timely goals from Marian Hossa and Jonathan Toews, great goaltending from Corey Crawford and a playoff-level focus on critical penalty kills.

“That’s something that really wasn’t present for a while ... in January,” Toews said. “The last five games or so it’s really come back.”

The Hawks have been the best road team in the NHL (118-67-32) since Quenneville became their coach in 2008.

But they’ve been particularly good on the extended circus and ice-show trips – 13-1-4 over the past two seasons.

That’s arguably an indication of the special chemistry the Hawks have had in their Stanley Cup-winning seasons, when they’ve played their best at the most critical situations. These guys play together well – whether the road trip takes them to the Honda Center, the Vegas Strip or the Dexter Lake Club.

“I don’t think it’s as much Vegas as it is being with the guys,” Seabrook said. “Being able to have a couple of days with nothing to do but have some fun, play some cards, have some beers – it’s good for our guys.”

50 years later, James is still a rock ‘n’ roll guy

When Tommy James assembled his first band – “Tom and the Tornadoes” – for a junior high school charity show in his hometown of Niles, Mich., he never dreamed his career would span 50 years or that a label whose founder had organized crime affiliations would launch it.

Although James recapped those years in his 2010 bestselling autobiography, “Me, the Mob, and the Music: One Helluva Ride with Tommy James & The Shondells,” now in its eighth printing, he is busy with too many current projects to linger in the past.

And that past includes 23 gold single and nine platinum albums, and the sale of more than 100 million records worldwide. James will perform on Valentine’s Day at the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet.

“I get to play with some old friends of mine, ‘The Ides of March.’ I haven’t seen them in a very long time,” James said.

“And we’ll have an autograph session after the show. So I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Current projects include “Inside Tracks with Tommy James,” which premieres Monday on YouTube; the movie version of “Me, the Mob, and the Music: One Helluva Ride with Tommy James & The Shondells” and writing new songs for TV and film through his company Aura Entertainment.

“YouTube is so powerful now. It’s like having a TV show,” James said. “I’ll take people into the studio, sing a lot of the hits and release new records and new recordings, that’s exciting to me. I love making records. ... Now I’ll actually be able to get immediate feedback from people.”

“I have such a respect for screenplay writers and what they recreate on paper,” James said. “They tell the story with scenes and dialogue and that’s hard to do. So it’s going to be interesting to see how that all comes together.”

“Tom and the Tornadoes” (later changed to “Shondells”) was a “garage band in

the real sense of the word,” James said. They rehearsed in a member’s garage, quickly progressed from “three to four chords” and played their first gig at an American Legion Hall when James was 12. James’ after-school job in local record shop provided knowledge about the business side of music that he still uses today, James said.

A local DJ with his own studio recorded the group’s version of “Hanky Panky,” which did well in the Niles area.

When a club the band was playing at in Wisconsin suddenly went “belly up,” James returned home and “got the call that changed my life.”

From that call, James learned that, in just 10 days, “Hanky Panky” sold 80,000 copies in Pittsburgh, courtesy of a bootlegger, James said. A number of major record labels

– including Columbia, Epic, RCA and Atlantic, James said – expressed interest in signing the band.

But Morris Levy, who has since passed away, was the owner of Roulette Records.

He contacted the other labels, James said, with the message, “This is my record. Back off.”

And the other companies did, a move that was good for the band, he added, although it never saw any royalties.

“We would have been completely overshadowed by the huge artists,” James said.

“We would have been a onehit wonder. … Roulette gave us the keys to the candy store and allowed us to be in charge of our own career. It allowed us to morph into whatever we could become.”

What they became is a band known for hits such as “Crimson and Clover,” “I

Think We’re Alone Now” and “Mony Mony,” James’ music has received airplay over 21 million times and more than 300 artists have covered his songs, according to a news release from James’ representatives.

James’ music has since appeared in 27 major motion pictures and current TV shows including AMC’s “Breaking Bad,” Fox’s “The Simpsons” and CBS’ “Criminal Minds,” the release said.

Retirement? The word is not in James’ vocabulary.

“I love the music business.

I eat and breathe it. It’s in my blood,” James said. “I can’t stop making up songs. They just grow out of my head until I put them down on paper.

From the time I was a little kid, all I ever wanted to be was one of those rock ‘n’ roll guys.”

RATED: R for strong bloody war violence and pervasive language TIME: 2 hours, 1 minute VERDICT: With all the talk about fact-based ilms and how accurate they should or shouldn’t be, it’s worth noting some stories are best brought to screen as simply and purely as possible. This is especially true with a film like “Lone Survivor,” Peter Berg’s expertly rendered account of a disastrous 2005 military operation in Afghanistan. War is messy, and politics are messy. But Berg has wisely chosen to focus pretty squarely on the action, and to present it as straightforwardly as possible. And he’s executed that approach with admirable skill, down to using autopsy reports to get the number of wounds a soldier suffered exactly right. “Lone Survivor” doesn’t have nearly the sweep of a major war film like Spielberg’s “Saving Private Ryan.”

But the action scenes – basically, one

That firefight, for those unfamiliar with the story (Berg also penned the screenplay, based on the memoir by former Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell), took place June 28, 2005, in the craggy mountains of Afghanistan’s Kunar province. As part of Operation Red Wings, Luttrell and three fellow SEALS were positioned on a hillside, tracking a Taliban commander in the village below, when they suddenly encountered a few local shepherds. Their agonized decision on what to do with those shepherds, one of them a teenager, led to a string of events that ultimately resulted in 19 American deaths. Of course, the title, “Lone Survivor,” and the fact Luttrell is played by the movie’s star (Mark Wahlberg, in a strong and moving performance) tells you much of what’s going to happen from the get-go. But that doesn’t hurt the film’s immediacy and power. In fact, you may have a hard time sitting still. Berg opens with footage of real Navy SEAL training and the extremes it reaches – some might call it unnecessary and overly worshipful, but for people who don’t know a lot about the SEALS, it’s helpful and effective. We’re also given a sense of the lighthearted camaraderie at the military base, in between operations, as the men joke about wives and girlfriends back home, or compete in foot races. One of the SEALS worries about how to afford a wedding present for his bride. The veterans engage in a little good-natured ribbing of a new arrival – involving some silly dancing. But all lightness disappears suddenly, and for good. Soon, Luttrell is hunkered in the mountains with his comrades: Michael Murphy (Taylor Kitsch), Danny Dietz (Emile Hirsch), and Matt “Axe” Axelson (Ben Foster). All seems to be going well until the moment they encounter the villagers; the ensuing debate is a painful one. At the end, we

see photos of the actual casualties of Operation Red Wings. It does not seem gratuitous, and no further explanation or exposition is given, or needed. Again, the best thing about Berg’s work here is its simplicity. – The Associated Press

He began with two stories about television’s power, both to distort reality (“Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” about “Gong Show” host Chuck Barris) and to reveal it (“Good Night, and Good Luck,” about Edward R. Murrow).

Neither was perfect, but the ilms showed tremendous potential, particularly the latter, with its thick clouds of paranoia and cigarette smoke. But Clooney has gone somewhat astray, with the football comedy “Leatherheads,” the political thriller “The Ides of March” and now “The Monuments Men.” They’re not bad pictures, but nostalgia – made urgent in “Good Night” – suffocates the World War II caper “The Monuments Men” as it did the screwball ode “Leatherheads.” Clooney’s taste is very good, and in adapting Robert M. Edsel and Bret Witter’s book by the same title about the Allied forces’ pursuit of art masterpieces stolen by Nazis, he has chosen a fascinating historical tale that also bears the intriguing question: What’s the price we’re willing to pay for art? But while a Michelangelo may be worth dying for, “The Mon-

mistakenly thought to be the MasterBuilder, is recruited to join an effort to stop an evil Lego tyrant from gluing the universe together.

RATED: PG, for mild action and some rude, nose-thumbing humor TIME: 1 hour, 34 minutes VERDICT: There are so many things to like about “The Lego Movie”: a great voice cast, clever dialogue and a handsome blend of stop-motion and CGI animation that feels lovingly retro, while still looking sharp in 21st-century 3-D. But the best thing about this movie, which was produced in full partnership with the Danish toymaker famous for its plastic-brick building system, is its subversive nature. While clearly illed with affection for – and marketing tie-ins to – the titular product that’s front and center, it’s also something of a sharp plastic brick lung in the eye of its corporate sponsor. “The Lego Movie” is an homage to the spirit of the iconoclast (i.e., the child). Its hero, ironically, is anything but a rule-breaker. Set in a world built entirely of Legos, the story revolves around construction worker Emmet Brickowski (voice of Chris Pratt), a tiny plastic Everyman who loves nothing better than following instructions. But when his Lego universe is threatened by an evil villain (Will Ferrell) who intends to glue all the world’s pieces – and its people – together, Emmet must join forces with a group of rebels to stop him. (In a nod to the term Lego uses to designate its in-house designers, these creative free spirits are known as “master builders.”) Guided by a leader who’s part Gandalf and part Morpheus (Morgan Freeman), this underground resistance movement consists of a ittingly motley crew: a punk-ish loner named Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks); her egotistical boyfriend, Batman (Will Arnett); a well-worn Lego spaceman igure from the mid-1980s (Charlie Day); and a robot-pirate hybrid named Metal Beard (Nick Offerman). The rest of the freedom ighters are a cheeky mix of Lego-sized historical personages (Abraham Lincoln, Shakespeare and Shaquille O’Neil) and co-branded comic book heroes (Green Lantern, Superman, Wonder Woman and others).

Keep an ear out for cameos by such stars as Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum and Billy Dee Williams, good-naturedly reprising his role as Lando Calrissian from the “Star Wars” trilogy. It’s hard not to have fun when the ilm

(written and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller) is having such a good time with pop culture. The chief party animal, of course, is Ferrell. Overplaying his character, Lord Business, like a distant cousin of his dim-witted “Megamind” villain, the actor once again gets tons of comic mileage out of his patented silly grandiloquence. (“Nail polish remover” – a deadly weapon if you’re a plastic toy and your face has been painted on – becomes, in Ferrell’s threatening delivery, the “poe-leash remover of nah-eel.”) “The Lego Movie” pokes fun at anyone who would argue that Lego products are, as one character puts it, “a highly sophisticated, interlocking brick system,” and not simply toys. But it also makes fun of itself, tweaking the conventions of narrative ilmmaking, animation and Lego model-making itself. The moral of this story is a sweet and uncomplicated one: Believe in yourself; everyone is special; there’s a time to follow the rules and a time to break them. Sure, those sentiments are cloying. In fact, they sound like something you’d see on one of those stupid, inspirational cat posters, don’t they? As it turns out, that’s exactly how a character in this adorably acerbic little movie describes them. – The Washington Post

uments Men” is, at best, adequately priced as a movie ticket. Clooney, working from a script he penned with his frequent collaborator Grant Heslov, has fashioned his ilm as a traditional WWII lick, with a “Great Escape”-like score by Alexandre Desplat and a sentimental kind of soldierly chumminess.

Only this band of brothers is more like an assembly of academics. A handful of museum curators and art experts have been gathered by art historian Frank Stokes (Clooney) to investigate and retake the troves of artwork the Nazis have stolen for a mammoth German museum planned by Hitler.

The platoon is ill-suited for war but bold in spirit: an art restorer (Matt Damon), an architect (Bill Murray), a sculptor (John Goodman), a British museum head (Hugh Bonneville), a theater producer (Bob Balaban) and a French painting instructor (Jean Dujardin). Some of the pairings are itting: Clooney and Damon planning another heist (“Ocean’s Thirteen”); Dujardin and Goodman back on speaking terms (“The Artist”). In truth, more than 300 Allied servicemen and women worked in the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives program in the inal years of the war. They helped lead to the recovery of about 6 million objects (estimates vary). Most of the names in the ilm have been changed, and the mission has been made signiicantly more romantic. Cate Blanchett plays a reluctant-to-cooperate assistant curator from Paris’ Jeu de Paume museum. A book by real-life Rose Valland inspired John Frankenheimer’s 1964 ilm, “The Train,” with Burt Lancaster. It portrayed the French Resistance effort to derail a train of stolen art taken from the Jeu de Paume. With the cunning of sabotage and the soot of the train yard, “The Train” makes a superior and grittier ilm. “The Monuments Men” is instead weighed down by dutifulness.

It feels like it’s only a third act, lacking any buildup of tension or character development. When Stokes solemnly argues early in the ilm about risking life for the recovery of what he calls “the foundation of modern society,” the movie has presented its thesis statement, and settled any debate.

Though deadly encounters follow, the nobility of the quest is unchallenged.

With this ilm, Clooney (who enjoys a self-satisfying scene telling off a Nazi) has erected a stiff monument, a worthy if undramatic tribute to those it’s based on. One wishes the movie had arrived 11 years earlier. Maybe it would have raised enough awareness to take precautions ahead of the toppling of Saddam Hussein, when Baghdad’s Iraq museum was looted of thousands of antiquities. – The Associated Press

There is pressure.”

True, if you wish to be successful at the top level of anything, you must be able to handle the pressure. This applies even at the bridge table. But there is another form of pressure in bridge -pre-emptive bids, which pressure the opponents by removing bidding space.

Look at the South hand. After two passes, what would you open?

In the first two positions, one heart would be a popular choice.

But after two passes, the dynamic changes. North-South’s chances of making game have diminished.

It is time to pressure West. Open three hearts! Or, if that is too rich for you, bid two hearts.

Now look at the full deal.

After a three-heart opening, West would make a takeout double and East would advance with three spades. This contract would go down after three rounds of hearts are played, but West would never pass with such a strong hand. He would carry his side into deeper waters.

At the table, South opened one heart, West doubled, North responded one no-trump, East passed, South rebid two hearts, and this ended the auction when West very cautiously passed.

The defense was excellent, though. West led the spade ace: three, six, queen. West, not fooled, continued with the spade king, and East dropped his nine, a suit-preference signal for diamonds (the higher-ranking of the other two side suits). West cashed his diamond ace, gave his partner a diamond ruff, got back on lead with the club ace, and gave East a second ruff for down one.

As for the screaming children chasing each other in the hallways – I have been known to poke my sleepy head out the door and ask them to please quiet down. Maybe I have just been lucky, but they usually do.

Breast enlargement in men is often reversible Dear Doctor K: I’m a man. Why are my breasts suddenly getting bigger?

Dear Reader: Everything that happens to a woman’s breasts can also happen to a man’s breasts, including cancer. Enlargement of a man’s breast is known as gynecomastia (guy-ni-co-MAST-ia). It is usually harmless and is often reversible.

It’s an oversimplification, but basically a breast is filled with breast glands and fat. Some men have prominent breasts because they are overweight. The extra fat has deposited not only around the belly but also inside the breasts.

That’s not really gynecomastia – that’s just fat breasts.

True gynecomastia is caused by an enlargement of the breast’s glandular tissues, not by excess fat. The glandular tissue is concentrated under the nipple, so the nipple area is enlarged more than the rest of the breast.

Gynecomastia actually is quite common in kids. About half of male babies have it, though it goes away. Then half (or more) of boys experience it at puberty. It is usually mild and short-lived.

It is less common in adulthood. But even then, the breast enlargement is usually mild and painless – although some men do complain of tenderness.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff The most common causes of gynecomastia in adult men are liver disease and certain medications: • Liver disease. One of the liver’s many purposes is to break down estrogens. Estrogens are called the “female hormones” and androgens the “male hormones,” but the fact is that men’s bodies make some estrogens and women’s bodies make some androgens.

Liver disease, especially alcoholic cirrhosis, weakens a man’s ability to break down estrogens.

As a result, estrogen levels in the blood often rise, which enlarges the breasts. If liver function improves, the breasts can return to their usual size.

• Medications. Certain drugs may cause breast enlargement.

These include some drugs used for heart disease and high blood pressure (spironolactone, digoxin, calcium channel blockers).

Some drugs that treat ulcers and heartburn (such as cimetidine) do it. Some drugs that treat prostate cancer or enlarged prostate (flutamide and finasteride) do it,

because they reduce androgen levels. Even the anti-anxiety drug diazepam can do it.

Finally, herbal remedies that contain phytoestrogens (plant-derived estrogens) can cause breast enlargement. So, can street drugs such as marijuana, amphetamines and heroin. Men who take or abuse male steroid hormones can also develop gynecomastia.

If a person stops taking the offending drug or medication, the breasts will return to their normal size.

Less common causes of gynecomastia include testicular cancer, an overactive thyroid gland and testosterone levels that are declining with age. These diverse disorders have two things in common: low androgen levels and high estrogen levels.

Breast enlargement in men is usually more worrisome than serious. Still, see your doctor to rule out a more dangerous cause.

And if you feel a lump inside your breast, as contrasted with just soft swelling, definitely check with your doctor. Although it is rare, men can get breast cancer.

International Communications Research conducted a survey and found that 84 percent of teens between 13 and 17 receive spending money from their parents as needed. Forty-one percent of the surveyed teens receive an allowance, and 80 percent of them said the allowance was tied to household chores.

This is known as alcohol poisoning and can cause the drinker to fall into a deep sleep, which can result in death. When a person passes out because of chugging alcohol, he or she should never be allowed to sleep it off. The person should be kept awake by any means possible and taken to the nearest medical facility.

Your boyfriend is highly competitive, but he could die while proving he’s the fastest “chug-a-lugger” in Illinois.

Your concern for his well-being needs to go beyond helping him walk off his next binge.

I urge you and his sister to try to convince him to get help. Alcoholics Anonymous would be a great place to start. The number can be found in the white pages of your local telephone directory.

If you can’t convince him that he’s in serious trouble, stop seeing him.

Dear Abby: I have been dating someone for about six months. We fell in love very quickly and spend almost every second together.

Our relationship has hit a rough patch ever since he found out that I have dated African-American men. He can’t seem to get over it, but he keeps saying he wants to try to make it work.

WASHINGTON – Even today, there’s a lingering stigma about women who choose to place their children for adoption. Unnatural, people say, and jump to conclusions about the woman’s lifestyle, character and state of mind. If times have changed, it’s only in that the stigma used to attach unilaterally to unwed mothers.

And that stigma was strong enough to keep Philomena Lee silent for 50 years.

The world now knows about Philomena Lee. In 2009, journalist Martin Sixsmith published a book about the son whom she bore in an Irish convent, and whom the nuns tore from her when he was 3 years old and sent off to America with a new set of adoptive parents. In 2013, the book became the basis for a film starring Judi Dench, who has been nominated for a best-actress Oscar for playing the role of Philomena – more or less.

“I was a bit of a dumb cluck in the film,” the real Philomena says, chuckling. “Some of those things I didn’t say. But it had to bring a bit of laughter into it. Because it’s so sad, you know.”

Philomena is now 80. She was sitting in a Ritz-Carlton in Washington last week with her daughter, Jane, as part of her ongoing campaign to drum up support for legal changes that would allow children adopted from Ireland to access records that would help them to trace their biological parents. It’s part of a wave of publicity in the wake of the film that will crest at the Oscars, which the two women will attend on March 2.

The story of Philomena Lee inspired an Oscar-nominated film and thrust her into the role of global advocate. (“She didn’t want to meet me at first – but it went absolutely fine”) to the gown she got to wear when she spoke onstage at the Golden Globes (“They let me keep it!”), Philomena is living out a fairy-tale ending to a tragic and traumatic story – something she could never have imagined in 2003 when she finally confessed to Jane that, before Jane and her brother were born, she had had another son.

Once upon a time, before there was Guatemala, before there was Ethiopia, before there was China, before there was Romania, there was Ireland – a country to which Americans traveled when they wanted to adopt children.

And before there was Angelina Jolie, before there was Madonna, there was Jane Russell, a star who went abroad to adopt in 1950 and brought 15-month-old Thomas home after reaching an agreement with his mother.

The resulting scandal about baby-buying made headlines and shook up the Irish administration, but didn’t eradicate the draconian practices of the church, which had made itself responsible for the problem of unwed

mothers and took it upon itself to treat these supposedly horrible sinners – in some cases teenage victims of rape or incest – with the strictness it felt they deserved.

If the film takes liberties with the present-day Philomena, it sticks to the facts of her past. Pregnant after a chance encounter with a man she met at a fair, she was turned over to the nuns, in a dormitory where unwed mothers spent three years delivering their children and then working at manual labor – Philomena worked in the laundry room – for the church’s profit. The mothers did get to see their children every day, but they didn’t always fully realize that those children were offered for adoption, as orphans, to American couples. Thus it was that Anthony Lee, age 3, was whisked off to America where he became Michael Hess and grew up in St. Louis. Philomena never saw him again.

Like her son, Philomena’s story has made its way in the world in all kinds of ways she couldn’t have expected. Sixsmith’s book focuses largely on the biography of the son, Michael/Anthony, who became the chief legal counsel to the Republican National Committee in the 1980s before dying of AIDS-related complications at 43.

The movie, adapted by Jeff Pope and Steve Coogan, goes a step farther into fiction and depicts Dench’s Philomena and Coogan’s Sixsmith going together on an oddball road trip to Washington in search of Philomena’s son – a trip that never actually happened.

It also, predictably, takes dramatic license with some of the story’s highlights: having the Sixsmith character, for instance, discover on the Internet, while sitting in the hotel breakfast room, that Anthony has died.

“The way we found out

wasn’t much better,” says Jane. Both Anthony and Philomena repeatedly returned to the convent over the years, trying to find out more information about each other. The nuns told them they weren’t able to help. Finally, Jane was able to gain some traction.

“I’m sorry to tell you he’s dead,” Philomena says the nun told them.

Philomena’s story has highlighted one side of the often ill-understood phenomenon of adoption. Having decided to come forward after so many years, she receives abundant messages and queries from around the world.

However, the letters come not from other mothers, but, overwhelmingly, from adoptees – particularly people who were born in the convent.

The book also helps dismantle the stubborn myth that silence is the best policy; that children should be sheltered from the facts of adoption; and that love and material comfort will conquer all.

She has made her peace with the church, even though the deceptions continued until the very end of the story.

Having learned that her son had died, and that he had chosen to have his ashes buried in Ireland at the place of his birth, she and Jane traveled to the abbey again, but were told that there was no other information about him.

“And then we met Martin Sixsmith in between times,” Jane says, and “he found all the American side of things.”

The following year, they returned and told the nun they had located Anthony/Michael’s family. “And the nun went to the cupboard and gave me all the paperwork that she could have given me the year before,” Jane says.

“But had she given it to me the year before, there would have been no book, no film, none of this. So, they really do have themselves to blame.”
