clafortune@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – A 13-yearold Bolingbrook boy died Wednesday after collapsing during a basketball game.

Will County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil said Dramon Ratcliff collapsed during a game at Plainfield Central High School and was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

Ratcliff was pronounced dead at 8:24 p.m. in the emergency room.

“An autopsy revealed a previously undiagnosed cardiac condition,” O’Neil said Thursday.

Ratcliff was an eighthgrade student at John F. Kennedy Middle School in Plainfield, said Tom Hernandez, spokesman for Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202.

An honor roll student, Ratcliff played basketball for

John F. Kennedy in both seventh and eighth grade, Hernandez said.

“He was a good student, a good young man,” he said.

Hernandez said JFK’s principal, A.J. Hundal, described Ratcliff as a polite young man who got along with his peers and respected his teachers.

“His mother said that he loved being a student at JFK ,and she knows he was loved by everyone at JFK,” Hernandez said.

Doctor testifying in Loza trial says infant’s injuries couldn’t be accidental

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A child abuse expert testified Thursday the injuries that led to an 8-monthold boy’s death in 2008 were intentionally inflicted.

Dr. Emalee Flaherty said she determined no accident could lead to the fractures and bruises found on Kevion Bender’s head and body after reviewing autopsy reports and photographs, medical records and police interviews.

“One blow could not have caused all these bruises [on his head],” Flaherty, a pediatrician at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, testified Thursday in the murder trial of Santos Loza.

Loza, 34, of Joliet, is facing his second trial on murder charges.

He was found guilty by a jury in September 2013, but Judge Sarah Jones ordered another trial after reviewing case law. Jones decided Loza’s lawyers were improperly restricted from asking Kevion’s mother, Sandra Sitko, about her relationship with Loza.

Sitko had dated Loza

for three months when she dropped off her son at his home on the afternoon of Oct. 26, 2008, investigators said.

After work, she returned late that night with her other son and looked in from the doorway at Kevion, who appeared to be sleeping.

Kevion was unresponsive when Sitko awoke the next morning. Loza immediately was suspected by police, but was not arrestSantos Loza ed until August 2010. Flaherty also testified at his first trial.

Kevion was examined by a pediatrician two weeks before his death and nothing unusual was noted, according to reports Flaherty reviewed.

An autopsy showed the boy had five rib fractures. Flaherty testified four of the fractures were unlikely to have occurred when the boy was given CPR in an attempt to revive him, while another near the spine could not result from resuscitation efforts.

“There were [also] bruises in a semi-circle from the right

shoulder to the chest. This is a strange place to have an accidental bruise because it’s fairly protected by the head and shoulder,” Flaherty said. “It’s especially unusual for someone who isn’t walking [yet].”

The boy also showed bruises “more severe than spanking” on his buttocks and bruises in several locations around his head and a 5-inch skull fracture, Flaherty said.

“On the right side of the back of the head ... I saw numerous bruises. I can’t be sure where one stops and another starts,” she testified.

After reading police interviews with Loza and Sitko, Flaherty believes the injuries occurred between when Kevion was dropped off with Loza at 4 p.m. Oct. 26, 2008, and paramedics were called at 4:50 a.m. Oct. 27.

“But you don’t know if someone told the truth in the police report you read as to what time something happened,” defense attorney Joseph Lopez asked Flaherty.

“I am ruling out this [death] is accidental,” she said.

The trial will continue Friday.

Social workers and counselors were on hand at the middle school Thursday for any students who needed someone to talk to, Hernandez said.

“We’ll keep that in place as needed,” he said.

Pair given military honors; veterans grieve for comrades they never knew

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – The people who attended their burial service Thursday did not know much about Quinn Fitzgerald and Herbert Odom.

But they knew they were veterans.

“We are here for two homeless veterans who we know little or nothing about. But we are here to give them their final salute,” Jack Picciolo told the gathering at Shelter C in the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

Picciolo, commander of Lockport Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5788, heads an effort to provide military honors to the burials of homeless veterans and those who, for other reasons, do not have family with them when they go to their graves.

Twenty people came to the burial of Fitzgerald and Odom, a good gathering on a sunny but frigid Thursday afternoon.

Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery Memorial Squad provided final honors, including a rifle salute and playing of taps.

“It’s hard to deny them the respect they deserve after having served their country,” said Jerry Terando, commander of the Morris Color Guard, which typically shows up for ceremonies such as this.

The service Thursday was like many others for Terando and others who came.

“We know very little about them,” Terando said. “They can come from anywhere around the country. This is a national cemetery.”

Fitzgerald and Odom were from Cook County. Fitzgerald, 54, was an apprentice seaman in the Navy during peacetime.

He died Dec. 26.

Odom 70, was a lance corporal in the Marines during the Vietnam War. He died Nov. 25.

Plainfield Special Olympics athletes face off Students create connections at basketball game

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – John Hicks almost broke a tie toward the end of a basketball game between Plainfield high schools’ Special Olympics athletes.

Hicks, a Plainfield South senior student, successfully made many shots during Thursday’s scrimmage game but in the last few seconds took one shot that didn’t make it.

Both teams – divided into blue and white colors – were tied 30-30.

Hicks was one of the Special Olympics athletes who competed Thursday in front of a huge crowd at Plainfield South High School.

Cheerleaders from Plainfield South and East high schools cheered the athletes on while a band blasted the school anthem.

It was all part of “Pack the House Night,” an annual event where Special Olympics athletes from South and East high schools engage in a friendly game of basketball.

“This is just a great night.

It’s an awesome way to recognize these students,” said Tom Hernandez, school district spokesman.

The student athletes are part of the school district’s special education program, where they learn vocational, academic and athletic skills.

Beth Sanna, Plainfield South special education administrator, said “Pack the House Night” lets Special Olympics athletes play before big crowds.

At the beginning of Thursday’s game, each basketball player came into the Plainfield South gym to greet a line of cheerleaders. The players tied several times throughout the

game and during half time they received recognition for their efforts. The schools’ Cougar and Bengals mascots added humor to the event by sliding into bowling pins and making free throws. Audiences also entered and won raffles.

“Special Olympics has brought my sons’ social skills to a whole different level,” she said. “This is where they find peers, they find friends and create connections.”

Joliet staff to re-evaulate snow plowing efforts Staff will prepare report for Feb. 17 City Council meeting

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – City officials plan to re-evaluate their approach to snow removal and prepare a report to be given at an upcoming Joliet City Council meeting.

The mayor and City Council have directed the city manager to prepare a plan to better address the type of snowfalls like they experienced Sunday, according to a news release from the city.

The re-evaluation follows aggravation from residents and City Council members over snow-plowing efforts after a winter storm Sunday left the city with more than 15 inches of snow.

Some residents have voiced their complaints that roads were not plowed

enough, and councilmen Larry Hug and Bob O’Dekirk have suggested the need for more plow trucks.

City officials have said record snowfall made plowing difficult.

City Manager Jim Hock said Thursday afternoon city staff will be debriefed on the week’s efforts to keep the roads clear and safe.

All department staff involved – communications, police, fire, emergency response and roads – will attend, he said.

“We’ll just talk about what worked, what didn’t work and what could be [done] differently and what we can do differently in the future,” he said.

In a statement, city officials said Mayor Thomas Giarrante, City Manager Jim

Hock and Public Works Director Jim Trizna have decided the city will employ contractors to assist snowplowing teams should snow storms like this happen again.

The contractors will have the “appropriate equipment” to assist snowplow teams in plowing, salting and snow removal from streets and subdivision roads.

Giarrante did not return phone calls Thursday seeking comment.

County taking leadership role in Walter Strawn Drive shutdown Issues 7,300 permits in 11 days versus 16,000 in all of 2014

Issues surrounding the shutdown were brought to the forefront during the Will County Board’s Executive Committee meeting Thursday.

“These companies do have other options,” Palmer said during the meeting. “I mean, the Chicagoland region is attractive, and we’re attractive, but if it becomes too difficult, they could go somewhere else and we don’t want that to happen.”

JOLIET – Will County officials may have to take the reins in solving issues surrounding the recent Walter Strawn Drive crossing shutdown if they intend to keep trucking and logistics companies that use the CenterPoint industrial park from going elsewhere.

“We didn’t cause this, but Joliet, the county and the state are probably the ones that are going to solve this,” said Nick Palmer, chief of staff for County Executive Larry Walsh Sr. “I think the county is trying to take a leadership role, but we’re still working with all the 7,300 permits in 11 days stakeholders.”

Holsten and City Manager Jim Hock said while Evergreen Terrace is likely to have fewer units, residents would have an option to live elsewhere in Joliet.

The Rev. Craig Purchase referred to a report from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, saying the federal agency was concerned that city officials “were pushing a lot of black people out of Joliet.”

JOLIET – Evergreen Terrace could be under redevelopment by mid-2016, the potential developer of the site said Thursday.

The possible timetable was presented at a meeting in which the motives for the takeover of the complex were questioned, with two speakers saying the city was trying to push African-Americans out of Joliet.

The 356-unit apartment complex for low-income residents still is in the hands of private owners. The city is not likely to know until a March trial what it will have to pay for Evergreen Terrace. And, the private owners still could appeal a federal judge’s decision in September that allowed the city to condemn the complex and take it over.

But the community meeting on the future of Evergreen Terrace did provide some idea of what is likely to happen and when.

“We’re talking about possibilities tonight. We don’t have a plan,” said Peter Holsten with Holsten Development, the com-

Holsten promised there would be alternative housing.

“We’re either going to build it or we’re going to find it. But you’re not going to be put out,” Holsten said. “You can take that to the bank.”

Abraham Mwaura with the Rainbow Push Coalition told Holsten there is a lot of distrust about the city’s motives.

“You know that you are walking into a very racialized situation,” Mwaura said.

Development plans OK’d

The City Council also approved Wednesday two new development plans.

One is a final plan for a new 10,440-square-foot building in Lockport Square, located on the southwest corner of 159th Street and Interstate 355, which will house five retail stores.

According to James Purinton, one of the partners of Lockport Square LLC, the company

is taking up a plan that failed to moved forward in 2008 after the real estate downfall. The group already has leases with three stores and construction probably will start in April, with an opening estimated for October, he said.

The council also approved a concept plan for a new business park on the northwest corner of 163rd Street and I-355.

The 38 acres will be developed into “a high image, beautiful corporate park, “ said Paul Ahern, president of Schaumburg-based Tandem Development Group.

Also, the City Council approved a $58,000 makeover for its board room. The plans include building a separate walled office for Lockport Community Television, as well as new paint and carpeting, Benson said.

Finally, the council approved the purchase of four new Ford utility squad cars costing $54,918 each.

Lockport students to raise funds for cancer research

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Lockport Township High School’s basketball team and student government hope to double the amount of money they usually raise for cancer research at a special event.

On Tuesday, the Porters basketball team and Lockport High School student government will collaborate to run the third annual “Porters vs. Cancer Night.” The event will be at the home basketball game between the Porters and Carl Sandburg High School, which begins at 7 p.m.

“It’s a great night for a great cause,” said Ryan Visser, student government co-sponsor and high school math teacher.

“Somewhere along the line someone will be touched by someone who has gotten can-

cer. I think it hits home for a lot of people. I think it’s good to show our support.”

In the past two years, the fundraiser has raised about $1,200 annually, but that may change this year.

“We’re hoping to double that because we added some new things,” said Brett Hespell, assistant varsity boys basketball coach.

He said the event will include a “pink out” game, where students anticipate selling close to 500 pink shirts.

There also will be a Taco Patio Shooting Down Cancer contest in the high school’s field house. Attendees can pay $1 to shoot a half-court shot. Winners receive a dinner at Taco Patio.

The high school’s sports marketing class will host contests and games throughout the evening at timeouts, quar-

ter breaks and halftime. The Porters basketball team will sponsor a Point Match Pledge Drive to get people to pledge money per point scored during the game.

“It’s just to get student participation like what you would see at an NBA game,” Hespell said.

The school’s coaching staff, along with Sandburg’s coaches, will participate in the Suits and Sneakers promotion, designed to bring awareness to healthy living to reduce the risk of cancer.

Visser said all the money raised will go toward the student government’s St. Baldrick’s spring fundraising drive.

The drive is connected with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a nonprofit charity committed to research for cures for childhood cancers.

LOCKPORT – The city of Lockport will start a project to remove increasing levels of iron in its water wells, but the costly project will require borrowing money from the state.

The City Council approved Wednesday night an ordinance authorizing the city to borrow $2 million from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to build a new facility and buy equipment to start removing iron from Well Nine.

This is a “proactive” action on the part of the city because the IEPA eventually will mandate the iron removal once the levels, which are increasing in Well Nine, reach above state regulations, City Administrator Benjamin Benson said.

“This is part of cleaning up the water, which is what we all want to do,” Mayor Steven Streit said.

The $2 million loan will come with 2.3 percent interest rate and will be paid over 20 years, Benson said after the meeting.

The project will likely start later this year. Once it is com-

pleted, the city will turn its attention to Wells 10 and 11, which will probably cost about the same, Benson said.

Picciolo typically gets a one- or two-day notice when homeless veterans are brought to the cemetery. He has an email list he uses to seek attendees for the burial.

When no one can come, the veteran has what is called a direct burial. Military honors are then given during a mass burial ceremony held every three months.

Anywhere from 40 to 90 veterans have been honored at the mass burials, Picciolo said.

“Our intent,” he said, “is that we get to a point that we don’t have a mass burial – that we go out to all of them individually. But it’s impossible. There’s too many.”

For those who do come, it’s important that they do.

Members of a fairly new Freight Advisory Council met for the first time Friday, John Greuling, president and CEO of the Will County Center for Economic Development, told committee members. The group is comprised primarily of representatives from the private sector, including retailers as well as trucking and logistics companies.

“These folks, they depend on good roads, good road networks and good systems,” Greuling said. “They understand there’s costs involved.

They’re not shy [about] paying those costs, as long as they know that money is going back into that infrastructure.”

Greuling said a regional freight study should be conducted.

“I hate to say it this way, but we ain’t seen nothing yet,” Greuling said. “There’s a lot of land to be developed that’s already zoned and entitled for distribution and industrial use. And if we don’t have a good understanding of where this freight is originating from and where it’s going to, we’re going to be chasing our tails for the next 25 years.”

OBITUARIES TIMOTHY R. DOYLE Timothy “Timmy” R. Doyle, age 59, of Manhattan passed away Monday, February 2, 2015, at Silver Cross Hospital.

He is survived by his daughter, Erin (John) Haley; two grandchildren, Sophia and Dylan; his brothers, Kevin (Patty), Jamie (Peggy), Terry (Rose), Bobby, Andy (Chrissy), and Danny (Katie); his sisters, Colleen Schroeder, Kara Boeckman, Tracy (Ed) Clark and Megan (Tim) Baldermann; numerous nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Marilynn (nee Fitzgerald) Doyle; his maternal grandparents, Robert and Martha Fitzgerald; and his paternal grandparents, Frank and Edna Doyle.

A lifelong resident of Manhattan, Timmy was an active member in the community. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from college of St. Francis and his Master’s degree from Governors State University in public administration. He coached little league for numerous years and assisted with Vacation Bible School. Timmy was a volunteer fire fighter for two years and served as a Manhattan Village Trustee for eight years. Timmy was a current member of the Manhattan School Board District 114, serving since 1991. He also served as a member on the board of the Lincoln-Way Area Special Education District 843.

Timmy has touched many lives and will be dearly missed.

Funeral service for Timmy will be 9:30a.m., Saturday, February 7, 2015, from Forsythe Funeral Home to St. Joseph Church, Manhattan for 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial.

Public health officials said students, staff and faculty at the facility have been notified and anyone who hasn’t been vaccinated for measles has been instructed to stay away from unvaccinated individuals for the next three weeks.

It’s so contagious that 90 percent of people who aren’t immunized are infected if exposed to the virus, according to the CDC. The Illinois cases come amid growing concern about children who are not vaccinated, including in California where lawmakers are hoping to follow the lead of two other states with proposed legislation that would require parents to vaccinate all schoolchildren unless a child’s health is in danger.

Health officials do not recommend measles shots before a child turns 1, at which time the government recommends all children get a first dose of the measles vaccine with a second dose between the ages of 4

and 6.

Illinois law requires one dose of measles vaccine for children in day care by age 2, or proof that they already have had the disease. Two doses are required for those entering kindergarten.

KinderCare spokeswoman Colleen Moran said that while the company, which operates facilities nationwide, follows local health department guidelines and encourages families to consult their doctors about vaccinations, “We realize some don’t (have their children vaccinated) for health or religious reasons, and we do not exclude kids who haven’t been vaccinated.”

Moran said the Palatine facility has been thoroughly

cleaned and KinderCare officials at multiple centers are going through records to determine which children are and are not vaccinated.

She said did not have any information about whether any staff members at the Palatine facility were unvaccinated or had been asked to stay away, or whether any other centers have asked staffers, parents or children who have not been vaccinated to stay home.

The county health department said one of the five children who became ill was hospitalized earlier this week but has since been released.

WASHINGTON – The gruesome killing of a Jordanian pilot who had crashed in Islamic State territory laid bare a problem of the U.S.-led coalition – there’s no sure way to rescue an airman who’s down behind enemy lines. Now, in response, the U.S. has moved search-andrescue aircraft closer to the battlefield, defense officials said Thursday.

U.S. pilots are flying missions over Syria daily from bases in the region, including from Qatar, and partner nations, including Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, are flying less often. The United Arab Emirates suspended its participation in airstrikes in December after the Jordanian pilot was captured, but it may reconsider after having given its aircrews extra training, two officials said.

The risk of capture is unavoidable in air combat missions anywhere. The danger is arguably greater for pilots flying over Syria with no U.S. troops nearby, even though the Islamic State has a very limited ability to shoot down planes. The importance of finding the pilot before he is captured was highlighted by the video showing Islamic State militants burning Jordanian Lt. Muath al-Kaseasbeh alive in a cage.

CHICAGO – Five infants who attend a suburban Chicago day care center have been diagnosed with measles and about 10 more children, including some also too young for vaccinations, could have been exposed to the disease, health officials said Thursday.

The Illinois and Cook County health departments said in a news release that lab tests confirmed measles in two infants who go to the KinderCare Learning Center on East Palatine Road in Palatine. Tests are pending for three others, but they have been diagnosed based on symptoms.

Officials had not identified the source of the infections at the center as of Thursday, but Dr. Terry Mason, chief operating officer for the county’s health and hospitals system, told a news conference there is no known link between the infants’ measles and a recent outbreak at Disneyland that sickened dozens of people.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said there have been at least 102 confirmed measles cases in 14 states in 2015, not including the Palatine cases. Of those 102, 94 were related to the Disneyland outbreak.

Mason said children who have not been vaccinated – whether infected or exposed – should not return to the Palatine center until Feb. 24 or until they provide proof of vaccination or immunity to measles, which is spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

Rauner issued pot licenses before FBI background check

CHICAGO – Gov. Bruce Rauner awarded licenses this week to 70 medical marijuana businesses before out-of-state criminal background checks could be done through an FBI database, as required under state law.

Rauner issued the licenses Monday after conducting an internal review that noted flaws in former Gov. Pat Quinn’s handling of the license process. But Rauner’s announcement didn’t mention the lack of national criminal background checks for the new industry he’d just launched.

Illinois State Police officials told The Associated Press that no out-of-state criminal history checks have been done. The agency is still waiting for the FBI to approve access to its database. In addition, about 1,000 patients have been approved for the program without federal criminal checks.

For 1st time Chicago sees more than 50M visitors in 2014

CHICAGO – Chicago officials said for the first time the city had more than 50 million visitors in 2014.

City officials made the announcement Thursday, saying Chicago hosted about 50.2 million visitors last year. That’s a 3.5 percent increase over 2013.

Statistics show tourism is responsible for $14.7 billion in visitor spending in Chicago and $871 million in tax revenue.

The numbers come after Mayor Rahm Emanuel set a goal of Chicago attracting 55 million visitors annually by 2020.

Lawmakers, Rauner trying to negotiate fix for budget gaps

SPRINGFIELD – A day after outlining an ambitious agenda for his first year in office, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner Thursday was confronted with a state budget that is millions of dollars short for programs such as subsidized day care that are rapidly running out of money.

Lawmakers held a hearing to discuss additional funding for the state’s subsidized day care program, which needs roughly $300 million more to continue helping low-income parents through June.

tions and Revenue Department also are running low on funds, as is the account used to pay court reporters.

Representatives from the governor’s office said Rauner wants lawmakers to grant him wider authority than he currently has to maintain underfunded portions of the budget by reallocating money from other areas that aren’t “critical priorities.”

Rauner’s budget director Tim Nuding said the governor’s office wanted the flexibility to address all problems in the current year’s budget.

“We don’t have the ... authority to spend another dime until the legislature gives us the authority to do it,” Nuding said.

Illinois health law enrollment surpasses 296,000

CHICAGO – More than 296,000 Illinois residents have

signed up for private health insurance under President Barack Obama’s health law. There is a little a week left before the enrollment period ends.

Federal officials released updated numbers Wednesday for Illinois through Jan. 30. The Illinois tally of 296,293 includes people who selected a health plan through HealthCare.gov and those who were automatically enrolled.

The government says 78 percent of Illinois consumers were eligible for financial assistance to lower their monthly costs.

Open enrollment runs through Feb. 15.

Illinois governor stumps for local ‘right-to-work’ zones

TROY – Gov. Bruce Rauner is dismissing claims that he’s anti-union because he advocates letting local government

employees decide if they want to join a union.

Echoing much of his agenda from his first State of the State address, the Republican on Thursday launched a four-stop Illinois tour in Troy in southern Illinois.

He told a few hundred in attendance that local voters, cities and counties should be able to create right-to-work zones where union membership isn’t mandatory.

He said that would attract business.

He also told reporters that he’s working with the Democrat-controlled state Legislature to identify where the state can find money to fund a subsidized day care program that’s hundreds of millions of dollars short.

He didn’t specify from where that money would come.

Hackers see fruitful targets in health care companies

By TOM MURPHY and BRANDON BAILEY The Associated Press Health care is a treasure trove for criminals looking to steal reams of personal information, as the hacking of a database maintained by the second-largest U.S. health insurer proves.

The latest breach at health insurer Anthem Inc. follows a year in which more than 10 million people were affected by health care data breaches – including hacking or accidents that exposed personal information, such as lost laptops – according to a government database that tracks incidents affecting at least 500 people. The numbers, compiled by the Department of Health and Human Services, show that last year was the worst for health care hacking since 2011, when more than 11 million people were affected.

Health care hacking is becoming more of a focus as retailers and other businesses have clamped down on security after massive breaches at

companies such as Target and Home Depot. That has made it more difficult in some cases for cyber thieves to infiltrate their systems. As a result, they’ve turned their attention toward health care.

Experts said health care companies can provide many entry points into their systems for crooks to steal data.

And once criminals get that information, they can pull off far more extensive and lucrative schemes.

“If someone steals your credit card and home address, they might be able to buy something, but you can usually get that locked down quickly,” said Tony Anscombe, a security expert with the cybersecurity firm AVG Technologies. “With medical records and a social security number, it’s not so simple.”

Anthem said late Wednesday that hackers broke into a database storing information on 80 million people in an attack the company discovered last week. The Blue Cross Blue Shield insurer said the hackers gained access to

names, birthdates, email address, employment details, Social Security numbers, incomes and street addresses of people who are currently covered or have had coverage in the past.

The insurer, which covers more than 37 million people, said credit card information wasn’t compromised, and it has yet to find any evidence that medical information was targeted. Anthem Inc. doesn’t know how many people were affected by the attack, but a spokeswoman said that number was probably in the “tens of millions.”

The attackers used custom malware designed to avoid detection by anti-virus programs, said David Damato, managing director of FireEye, a Silicon Valley cybersecurity firm and corporate parent of Mandiant, an emergency response group hired by Anthem to investigate the breach. He said groups with that ability typically are sophisticated financial crime rings or hackers backed by “nation states,” such as a foreign government.

Thumbs-down on Joliet snow removal effort The Herald-News Editorial Board offers this week’s thumbs-up and thumbs-down: Thumbs-up: to former Joliet pastor Steve Hinkle for tackling a topic many people don’t address – the harm that can be done to men when trying to living up to macho male stereotypes – and by addressing it in terms that are personable and vulnerable. In a very open way, Hinkle blogs and speaks about the topic and is writing a book to encourage men of all ages to be true to themselves and not an artificial standard of male behavior.

Thumbs-down: to the City of Joliet for its response to the blizzard when it comes to snow removal. To be clear, we applaud the effort of the snowplow drivers themselves. We know they worked long hours as they tried to clear more than 15 inches of snow. We get it was a record snowfall, and that drifting snow created difficulties for plowing. It’s understandable that neighborhoods and secondary roads don’t have the same priority as primary roads, and that the snow became hard-packed as cars drove on top of it. But there’s no excuse to be several days removed from the blizzard and to still have snow on main roadways such as Black Road or Houbolt Road, or on the streets bordering Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center that need clear access during emergencies. It’s clear the plans for the blizzard were not as good as it could have been. City officials said Thursday they have directed the city manager to prepare a plan to better address large snowfalls, in part by employing contractors who have the appropriate equipment to assist the city. We applaud that step and will be watching during the next large snowfall.

Thumbs-up: to Joliet officials for giving consideration to an alternative use for the St. Mary Carmelite Church. Built in 1882, the church is made out of Joliet limestone and previously faced destruction. But Joliet has tried to save the building, and word last week was that a possible developer could put a restaurant and residences in the building.

Cities often are too quick to allow their history to be torn down in the face of growth and development. Here’s to hoping an acceptable, and safe, adaptive reuse can be found for the site.

Hint of a lifeline for the middle class Despite the volley of partisan rhetoric hurled from Capitol Hill to the White House this week over President Barack Obama’s proposed federal budget, it’s possible to discern the sounds of political harmony beneath the thunder.

It’s no surprise Obama’s $4 trillion Fiscal 2016 budget was derided by leading Republicans as “dead on arrival,” and worse.

We’ve come to expect that as politics as usual. The president’s reliance on large tax increases on corporations and the wealthy to finance efforts to help the middle class and create more jobs was a sure bet to be greeted with instant rejection.

But there’s something else – something more important, we hope – going on in the larger political discourse under way in the country as candidates gear up for the 2016 election.

The most striking evidence is even Mitt Romney – he of the “47 percent” – made it a point before he bowed out of the upcoming race to promise he would “end the scourge of poverty” if he ran.

Similarly, Jeb Bush said in his nondeclaration of a candidacy, “While the last eight years have been pretty good ones for top

earners, they’ve been a lost decade for the rest of America.”

In other words, income inequality – long a fundamental concern of Democrats that President Obama has seized as his current theme – is being recognized by some GOP leaders as a major national issue that deserves a solution.

And not a minute too soon.

For the past 15 years or so, the middle-class share of households has continued to shrink as more Americans fall to the bottom.

The Great Recession worsened the trend because the economy lost a lot of middle-income jobs, which have been replaced during the painfully slow recovery by lower-paying jobs.

Given the middle class is where the great mass of voters are, it makes sense politicians of all stripes would wise up sooner or later. No one should harbor any illusions about the political difficulty of implementing effective policies to deal with the problem; but agreeing that, in fact, there is a problem represents a hopeful moment that must not be wasted.

The best solution outlined in Obama’s 2016 federal blueprint is

a plan to increase jobs by spending $478 billion on transportation and infrastructure over six years.

This represents over a third more than the current spending rate and a 78 percent increase for mass transit.

He proposed to pay for it in part by getting $238 billion from a one-time tax on repatriated corporate profits.

Obama also proposed a host of other programs to help lift incomes, from free community college to more generous childcare subsidies and education tax credits, expanded unemployment benefits and others. But spending on infrastructure should be a priority because it produces good jobs even as it provides a tangible public benefit. As President Ronald Reagan said, “The best social program is a productive job.”

The sticking point comes in how the spending is paid for.

Reaching agreement won’t be easy, but both sides must realize Americans are fed up with gridlock. If the nation’s leaders can agree on the goal – helping the middle class – they surely should be able to reach consensus on how to get there.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Plainfield’s next ‘game of year’ set to tip off VIEWS Dick Goss Six days before Christmas, Joliet area basketball fans were treated to what might have been the game of the year.

Or, maybe that distinction will go to Friday night’s Southwest Prairie rematch between visiting Plainfield East and Plainfield North.

East senior Aaron Jordan, who is back getting healthy after sitting out for a while with a thigh bruise, hit the game-winning jump shot with 1 second remaining back on Dec. 19, giving East a thrilling 63-61 victory over North.

The Bengals’ gym was packed that night, and it promises to be a similar scene tonight at North. From that standpoint alone, the atmosphere will be electric.

Sellout crowds at local basketball games just don’t happen much anymore. When they do, they are occasions to savor.

Of course, the Bengals (128) and Tigers (15-4) are neighbors who do not exactly enjoy losing to each other. The two teams also are locked in a three-way chase with Oswego for the SPC title, and the voting to seed teams for the Class 4A Bolingbrook Sectional is less than two weeks away.

So no matter how you look at it, this one matters.

Although they may not spend much or any time going head-to-head in the rematch, Jordan and North’s Trevor Stumpe – who will play his college ball at NCAA Division I Wofford – are two of the best individuals in the area. Expect nothing more than big games from both.

Assuming Jordan and Stumpe will more or less cancel each other out, the outcome could be decided by the supporting casts, and by which side’s defense does the job.

For North, that guy to watch is 6-foot-5 junior shooting guard Kevin Krieger. Not unlike his brother, Jack – one of the best players to come through the North program – he can fill it up. Opponents must pay attention to Stumpe but cannot forget about Krieger, either.

Speaking of Jack Krieger, the Saint Xavier senior guard earned the school’s Athlete of the Month Award for January after averaging 19.1 points and 6.8 rebounds in the eight games. He has moved into the top 10 on Saint Xavier’s all-time scoring list.

Ditchman is one reason Lincoln-Way Central is favored to win the upcoming regional it is hosting.

Area wrestling teams are ready Saturday to begin the first step of what many are hoping will end with an appearance in the state finals in Champaign in a couple weeks.

Local teams will be competing in eight separate regionals, with three in Class 3A, two in Class 2A and three in Class 1A. All top three finishers in the Class 3A regionals will see each other again next weekend at the Normal Community Sectional.

Here’s a look at some top performers who’ve won at least three-quarters of their matches this season. The weight classes listed here may change slightly after weighins before the regional gets underway.

Lincoln-Way Central is favored to win its third straight regional in the event that it hosts. Leading coach Jason DePolo’s Knights are Vinnie Piunti (120 pounds) and Bryan Ditchman (285).

Plainfield Central’s leaders

to win its first regional since 2011 when it competes at St. Laurence. Coach John St. Clair’s team is led by Egan Berta (138), Jimmy Brennan (145) and Jake Kirkman (152).

And in Class 1A, an interesting clash is brewing at Chicago’s Agricultural Science, where Coal City and Wilmington are squaring off. The Wildcats won their last regional in 2012, while the Coalers are looking for their first regional title since 1999.

Leaders for coach Mark Masters’ Coalers are Joey Rivera (106), Jake Hiles (113), Cody Minnick (120), Corey Jurzak (132), Riley Kauzlaric (182) and Jake Frost (220).

Pacing coach Rob Murphy’s Wildcats are Colin Weis (132), Austin Headrick (138), Nick Hawkins (160), Joe Mann (170), Ryan Berman (195), Kyal Davis (220) and Kyle Hull (285).

Peotone will be going after its third straight regional title when it takes part in the Bowen Regional in Chicago.

Leading the way for the coach Greg Goberville’s Blue Devils is Chandler Gartner (138).

And Seneca will be taking part in the Sterling Newman Regional. The Irish are paced by Sage Friese (138), Zach Russell (152) and Dayton Coyle (170).

Lewis women win, remain unbeaten SUBMITTED REPORTS LIBERTY, Mo. – The No. 1-ranked Lewis women’s basketball team kept its undefeated record intact Thursday with a 78-63 Great Lakes Valley Conference win at William Jewell.

Lewis took a lead as large as 15 points in the first half before settling on a 39-27 lead at the break. Junior Mariyah Brawner-Henley led the way for the Flyers in the first 20 minutes with 14 points, seven boards and three blocks.

A 7-0 William Jewell run early in the second half cut the lead for Lewis (22-0, 12-0) to four points. Senior Jess Reinhart halted the run on a layup with 16:14 remaining to make the score 48-42. Reinhart’s basket slowed the Cardinals down and 10 minutes later the Flyers increased their lead to 20 points after a pair of free throws by junior Alyssa Dengler.

Brawner-Henley finished with 20 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks for her 16th double-double of the season.

She was 9 of 12 from the floor.

Reinhart scored 20 points, 10 in each half, on 10-of-15 shooting.

“I thought our post players did a good job of being strong on the blocks and calling for the basketball,” Lewis coach Lisa Carlsen said. “We did a good job of working inside-out tonight.”

Nikki Nellen recorded a season-high 14 points. The Flyers shot 43.4 percent (33 of 76) while limiting the Cardinals to .315 shooting (23 of 73).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Lemont 62, Bremen 47: PJ Pipes led Lemont (13-8, 6-3) with 21 points and six rebounds. Nick Wisz had 17 points and seven rebounds, and Ryan Shereck contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Morris 81, Yorkville 68: Austin Patterson led Morris (157, 6-4) with 30 points and 11 rebounds. Evan Bjelland had 23 points and six assists, and Jake Walker 19 points.

Bolingbrook girls seeded 5th in sectional STAFF REPORT The IHSA on Thursday announced the results of seed voting for the girls basketball regionals and sectionals.

In Class 4A, Bolingbrook received the No 5 seed in the 22-team Oswego East Sectional behind Benet, Neuqua Valley, Oswego and Oswego East. Romeoville is No. 11, Lockport 13, Plainfield South 14, Plainfield East 17, Joliet Central 18, Plainfield North 19, Joliet West 20 and Plainfield Central 21.

Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Joliet West and West Aurora will host regionals, which begin Feb. 16.

Minooka, meanwhile, is seeded fourth in the five-team Ottawa Regional, which feeds into the Pekin Sectional.

Rock Island, East Moline and Ottawa are in the top three regional spots, with Moline fifth.

The other Class 4A sectional with area entries is at Lincoln-Way North, where Lincoln-Way East is No. 7 and Lincoln-Way Central 13.

In Class 3A, the Providence Regional has Lincoln-Way West 1, Providence 2, Joliet Catholic 3, Morris 4 and Coal City 5. Peotone is No. 3 in the regional it hosts, with Rich South 1.

Seneca is 3, Reed-Custer 5 and Wilmington 6 in the Class 2A Reed-Custer Regional. Bishop McNamara is 1 and Beecher 2.

In Class 1A, Gardner-South Wilmington is the 4 seed and Dwight the 5 seed at the Somonauk Regional.

U. of St. Francis suffers first conference loss SUBMITTED REPORTS BOURBONNAIS – Olivet Nazarene’s Aaron Larson and Austin Davis scored 17 points apiece to lead the No. 25-ranked Tigers to a 72-65 win over No. 14 University of St. Francis in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference action Wednesday night.

The loss was the first for St. Francis (19-6, 13-1 CCAC) in conference play and reduced the Saints’ lead over Olivet Nazarene (18-7, 12-2) to

one game in the CCAC South Division, with five remaining.

USF led, 32-27, at the half.

But Olivet went on an 11-0 run to take a 52-41 lead with 10:54 left. Davis and Larson combined for seven points during that stretch.

Olivet took its largest lead, 68-54, with 4:41 to go. Jake Raspopovich’s layup with 1:06 left capped an 11-0 St. Francis run to cut the gap to 68-65, but the Saints got no closer.

Ilya Ilyayev paced the Saints with a game-high 21

points. Raspopovich and Edvinas Presniakovas (Plainfield South) added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Local teams have enjoyed a lot of success during the nineyear history of the IHSA’s competitive cheerleading finals, and they hope to continue that run this weekend.

A year ago, Lincoln-Way East won the large division while Providence was third and Joliet West took fourth.

In the medium division, Lemont took first while Morris was second.

Ten squads will be competing in this year’s finals, which begin today and conclude Saturday at Bloomington’s U.S. Cellular Coliseum.

Lockport edged East last weekend for top honors in the large division at the Joliet West Sectional. Both squads scored over 94 points, which were the highest totals statewide. The Porters and Griffins have competed at state since the event began.

The Porters have won two titles and placed in the top three four other times at state.

“The team has been working so hard to reach their goals this year,” Porters coach Jenny Krumlinde said.

“I have never seen a team so dedicated and hard-working.

“Our seniors – Melissa Dudek, Krysta Guess, Kate Reposh and Mariah Rivera – have done a great job leading the team in all of our success this year. We have had to deal with injuries and adversity, and we couldn’t have done it without all 23 girls sticking by each other’s sides. We are very excited to compete in the state competition again this year.”

The wife-husband coaching duo of Julianne and Jayson Polad hope East can make another run at a championship.

“We are incredibly blessed with outstanding young women representing the East cheer program,” Julianne Polad said. “Outside of tremendous skill, they excel academically as well. As the defending state champions, we are prepared and extremely excited for this upcoming

Joliet West also will be competing at state for the fifth straight year. Coach Amy DiForti’s Tigers are in the large division, and her captains are Felicite Woods, Danielle Hofsteadter, and Ty’Shalia Woods.

“Joliet West’s cheerleaders are very excited about competing in the state tournament this weekend,” DiForti said. “We were in an extremely competitive sectional with the best teams in the area. I am very proud of them for working so hard and coming together as a team this season.”

Wilmington won its first sectional title when it took the small division crown at Joliet West. Coach Jeannine Bejlovec’s Wildcats are led by senior captains Alicia Headrick, Paige Mack and Ally Stewart.

“We are so excited about winning our first sectional title,” Bejlovec said. “This is our sixth year in a row to advance to state. This is the fourth year to state for Alicia and Paige. We have seven returning members from last year’s eighth place team.”

The lone local team in the coed division is Bolingbrook.

This is the fifth straight trip and eighth overall for coach Tammy North’s Raiders.

“We have had great success this season and hope that tomorrow night we will make it into the top 10 that has been out goal the whole season,” North said. “I have 12 seniors, and we are a strong competitive coed team in the area. We have been battling injuries like everyone else but will come out strong tomorrow afternoon.”

Other local teams that will be competing are Lemont and Morris in the medium division, Minooka in the large division and Reed-Custer in the small division.

Lemont, coached by David Erlenbaugh, has won nine trophies, including four state titles. Morris, coached by Kristin Sanders, will be making its ninth state trip.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHAMPAIGN – Illinois said backup quarterback Aaron Bailey is transferring.

Spokesman Kent Brown said Bailey made the decision after meeting Thursday with coach Tim Beckman. Brown said he doesn’t know Bailey’s destination.

Beckman recently said that last season’s primary starter, Wes Lunt, would keep that job.

Bailey, who is from Bolingbrook, was considered a dual-threat quarterback. But in limited playing time he showed he was more polished runner than passer. In 14 games over two seasons, he completed 13-of-27 passes for 122 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

Brown said Beckman agreed to the transfer provided Bailey doesn’t move to another Big Ten school or a school Illinois plays in the next three seasons.

We still have absolutely no idea what Bears general manager Ryan Pace and coach John Fox think of Jay Cutler.

We assume Fox has determined his name isn’t Jake?

With the recent contract extensions for Al Louis-Jean and DeDe Lattimore, it appears Pace has completed the binge-watching he promised of the Bears’ entire 2014 season, but we have yet to hear a peep about Cutler.

Let’s assume for the moment, because of economics and market conditions, it’s likely Cutler will go to training camp in Bourbonnais in July as the Bears’ starting quarterback for at least one more year.

Unlike the long line of coaches Cutler allegedly has “killed,” offensive coordinator Adam Gase and quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains are going to survive past 2015 regardless of what happens with Cutler.

With everything else Pace and Fox have to worry about, why not give Gase and Loggains one crack at the NFL quarterbacks version of Rubik’s Cube?

The question we should all be focused on right now isn’t what do the Bears do about Cutler, it’s what should they do at the position in addition to Cutler?

I was asked Thursday which current NFL veteran the Bears should pluck in free agency to challenge Cutler.

The answer is none. The last thing the Bears need or want is Cutler on the bench as a $17 million backup. That scenario could create locker room, huddle and sideline issues even Henry Kissinger wouldn’t want to tackle.

The reason the Bears need to address quarterback in free agency is their own 2014 backup, Jimmy Clausen, is a member of this year’s class, and it’s unlikely the only other QB on the roster, David Fales, is an answer.

Bears hire Drayton as running backs coach John Fox secured one of the final members of his 2015 staff, hiring Stan Drayton as running backs coach, the Bears announced Thursday.

Drayton has 22 years of coaching experience, including the past four seasons serving as assistant head coach/running backs at Ohio State, where he won a national championship after the 2014 campaign.

Drayton made previous stops as running backs coach at University of Florida (2010), Syracuse (2009), TenClausen out of Notre Dame with the 48th pick in 2010 was John Fox. It is also worth noting that after playing 13 games as a rookie and compiling a 58.4 passer rating, the Panthers

After five years, there is no indication Clausen is an NFL-winning quarterback,

and the Bears can do better.

The truth is we know little about Fales, but the fact the Bears were afraid to put him on the field Week 17 against the Vikings after spending almost an entire season with the Bears last year speaks volumes.

The Bears don’t need to give up on Fales yet, but counting on him as a No. 2 has Caleb Hanie written all over it.

There are only two free agent QBs that make sense for the Bears: Jake Locker and Matt Moore.

Locker was the eighth player chosen in the 2011 draft, will turn just 27 in June and he showed occasional flashes working with Loggains in Tennessee on the rare occasions he was healthy.

Minimally, he works as a No. 2, and if he could stay healthy he might even be able to become a No. 1 if this proves to be Cutler’s last season as a Bear.

Like Clausen, Moore’s first NFL coach was Fox after he went undrafted in 2007, was

cut in training camp by the Cowboys and claimed on waivers by the Panthers.

Moore has played well in stints as a starter with the Dolphins but was never able to convince Miami he could be the starter. He is one of the best No. 2s in the NFL. If the Bears were to sign Moore in free agency, they would want to draft a quarterback as well, but they have way too much to try to get done to risk the No. 7 pick on Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota.

Should UCLA’s Brett Hundley make it to the third round – which he probably won’t – he’d be a steal.

Interesting later-round possibilities could be Garrett Grayson of Colorado State or Sean Mannion of Oregon State, but the bottom line is it’s an unusually bad year to be in the market for a quarterback.

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent MOKENA – Jeff Rutter is a frequent sub or addition to the local band Acoustic Avenue.

Rutter, of Bolingbrook, is a guitar player with the touring band Cryan’ Shames, as well as the local band Scramble and The Nightshift Orchestra (a Chicago wedding band). He said it can be a challenge playing with different bands – but it’s a challenge he enjoys.

“I like the comfort of playing with regulars,” Rutter said, “but the stimulation of throwing caution to the wind.

It’s actually a fun challenge. ... Everyone brings a little different flavor. Certain people are better at Beatles songs, certain people are better at ’80s and ’90s stuff. As a team, you play to the strengths of the members.”

Acoustic Avenue – also known as Electric Avenue when the band is “plugged” – played about 250 gigs last year and 340 among all three bands, said Ron Romero of Mokena, a bassist (4- and 12-string), vocalist, booking agent through Romero’s Stage Right Productions and only original member of Acoustic Avenue.

“It’s expansive to the sound,” Romero said. “One time when we were practicing in my basement, we hit the first note, and it made every hair on my arms stand up.”

Even the audience loves it when they mix things up a bit, Romero said, as every musician brings a different flavor to the mix. Romero added that he personally enjoys learning from the subs – new music and new music theory, as well as the challenge of playing familiar songs in unfamiliar keys.

“When you play with good musicians, you have to keep up,” Romero said.

In the same spirit of camaraderie, Romero often has been a sub or an addition to other bands, such as local bands The Chauffeurs, The Meteors and The New Invaders.

“If we need a sub, we’ll call

someone up from the musicians’ pool and say, ‘Can you sub today?’ ” Romero said.

“They say, ‘Sure – and by the way, can you work with us next week?’ ” Even when all of Acoustic Avenue’s members are available for a performance, the band may hire extras for certain events. And sometimes, other musicians who attend an Acoustic Avenue performance wind up jamming with the band and becoming subs, Romero said.

Acoustic Avenue’s other core members are Jimmy Herter of Homer Glen, who plays guitar, saxophone and flute; and Jim Alberico of New Lenox, who plays drums, keyboard, guitar and ukulele.

Alberico is a former member of the local band Vintage Wood.

Herter played with Nicolette Larson in the ’70s when she opened for Neil Young, Romero said. He also has

One of Acoustic Avenue’s subs also uses substitute musicians in his bands. Greg Favata – a guitarist and vocalist from the Chicago suburbs, touring member of New Colony Six, and member of the local band Moonlight Cocktail – said he enjoys subbing and playing with his friends who sub with those bands.

Favata, who also subs for the local bands The Class of ’68 and Incognito, also uses subs for his bands. However, Favata said subs must know the music and adjust to each band’s particular style.

New Colony Six began as a ’60s garage band, plays its own hits and covers other bands from that era. Moonlight Cocktail’s selections include disco and classic rock.

“They bring something new,” Favata said of the subs, “and you try to adapt to their strengths.”

That applies to a lot of inexperienced bridge players. They learn “rules” like cover an honor with an honor or third hand high and always follow them, even when it is wrong.

Yes, all right, that is what sorts out the good players from the less capable, but usually, especially in the card play, you have only two choices: Play high or low, or discard or ruff.

Take a few moments to consider both, and you are likely to realize which is correct.

In this deal, South is in four spades. West leads his diamond two.

South takes East’s seven with his ace and leads the spade queen. East wins with his ace and returns the diamond jack. How should South continue?

South’s three-spade rebid was game-invitational.

Declarer seems to have 10 easy tricks: five spades, two hearts, two diamonds and one club. So, when East returns the diamond jack, it looks obvious for South to win the trick with his king. Here, though, West ruffs away the king, and declarer later loses two diamond tricks to go down one.

Instead, South should let East take the trick. Then declarer’s 10 tricks are safe, South being sure of a second diamond trick even if East leads a third diamond.

Finally, note that if West could overtake his partner’s diamond jack from an initial holding of queen-third and give his partner a ruff, the defenders would take only those three tricks.

Dear Dr. K: I had knee replacement surgery several years ago. More recently, I had my hip replaced. I am scheduled to have a root canal next month. Do I need to take antibiotics before my dental procedure?

Dear Reader: Almost any type of dental work – extractions, gum surgery, root canals, even routine cleanings – can injure the gums and other soft tissues of the mouth. The most obvious evidence of this is that they bleed.

Bacteria live inside our mouth. When gums are injured, bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream. From there, bacteria can travel to places throughout the body – including the new joints that are created by hip or knee implants. A bacterial infection of a new artificial joint can ruin the joint.

That will make a second operation necessary.

Your implant can become infected even years after surgery.

Because of this theoretical risk from dental work, during most of my medical career authorities recommended that people who have had hip or knee replacements take antibiotics before an invasive dental procedure. That is, the experts thought the benefits of taking “prophylactic” (preventive) antibiotics were likely to outweigh the risks.

In more recent years, however, large studies have changed expert opinion. The studies have shown the risk to an artificial joint from dental work conducted without antibiotics is very low. More important, the overuse of antibiotics has been shown to create bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics – a growing risk.

For these reasons, professional dental and orthopedic groups now say preventive antibiotics aren’t required for people with artificial joints. But they still recommend you let your dentist know

While we love her dearly, when the time comes, Aunt Lil will be off to a nursing home or have private home health care.

Should we approach this with her now or wait and blindside her if/when it becomes an issue? – Careful

Having been so close to you and your sister since you were children, I can understand why Aunt Lil might have expected some kindness in return. However, because the two of you aren’t up to the task, she should be told now. It may provide an incentive for her to take better care of her health. Even if it doesn’t, it might spur her to think about her assets and planning for her care or supervision should she need it in the future.

Because you don’t want the bother, suggest she involve another trusted family member or a social worker to watch out for her if she’s no longer competent to manage her affairs.

Dear Abby: I am a widower in my mid-80s, and have met a lovely widow, “Diane,” also in her 80s. What started as a “let’s do lunch” friendship has developed into a close, affectionate relationship. Neither of us wants to take this to the next level, but we do want to spend as much time together as we can in the years left to us. We have a very active social life with friends and with Diane’s family who live in the same town.

My daughters, who live in another city and rarely visit, profess to like her and say they are happy I have someone in my life.

But they have asked that I be sensitive to their feelings of loss for my late wife, who died four years ago. They don’t want me to share what we do and where we go, which is hard when Diane is such a part of my life.

My problem is Diane and I want to spend a weekend in the city in which my children live to attend the theater. We will be sharing a hotel room. Do we tell them our plans and that we would like to see them while there, or not?

Diane isn’t comfortable going behind their backs, but she also doesn’t want to cause a rift in my family.
