fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Public Schools District 86 Board approved revisions to several school policies and also learned about the growth of STEM programs within the schools.

District 86 schools are seeing “exponential growth” in science, technology, engineering, mathematics or STEM activities, said Natalie Coleman, program coordinator of science and social studies.

At Wednesday’s board meeting, she detailed to board members how the level of student engagement has grown and how it may be incorporated in the curriculum. She also talked about the popularity of the

Hour of Code initiatives within the schools.

The robotics program has grown from three to five schools and in some District 86 schools students are learning to use 3-D printers, she said.

Four schools now have STEM clubs and National Geo Bee programs. Hour of Code initiatives at five schools, she said.

These programs are reaching about 255 students this year, and next year they are projected to reach more than 2,500 students. The programs are held after school but they could be embedded in the fine arts class rotation for students at the junior high level, she said.

“If you look at the jobs … students need to be ground-

ed and embedded in science, engineering, technology and math,” Coleman said. “Specifically technology, computers, cars, phones, everything we use now is computerized.”

Policy revisions

Board members also unanimously approved revising policies concerning safety, convicted offenders, criminal background checks and searches and seizures.

Nick Sakellariou, district chief legal counsel, said at the board’s policy committee the policies would not undergo a “great deal of substantive” change. Instead, the language of the policies would reflect the revised model policies set by the Illinois Association of

Second murder trial begins for Santos Loza

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The second murder trial for a man accused of killing an 8-month-old boy in 2008 is underway.

In September 2013, a jury found Santos Loza, 34, guilty of beating Kevion Bender to death at his Joliet home, but Judge Sarah Jones ordered another trial after reviewing case law.

A jury of 10 men and two women began hearing testimony Wednesday.

In opening Santos arguments Wednesday, Loza Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Chris Koch said Kevion died from blunt-force trauma – more than 30 injuries – inflicted when he was alone with Loza.

Firefighter David Eichholzer testified that Loza was flagging down the ambulance that arrived just before 5 a.m.

Oct. 27, 2008, at his home on Woodside Court. Eichholzer described the situation as a “load and go” and recalled running back to the ambulance in less than 30 seconds while performing compressions with his fingers in an attempt to resuscitate Kevi-

on.

Eichholzer testified rigor mortis prevented firefighters from restoring the baby’s breathing by inserting a tube during the ride to the hospital.

Sandra Sitko was dating Loza for three months when she dropped off her son at his home on Oct. 26, 2008, investigators said. She returned late that night with her other son and looked in from the doorway at Kevion, who appeared to be sleeping.

Kevion was unresponsive when they awoke the next morning.

Loza immediately was suspected by police, but was not arrested until August 2010. Sitko continued a relationship with Loza after her son’s death, but defense lawyers only were allowed to ask during the first trial about the couple’s relationship until February 2009, when they stopped seeing each other regularly.

“Santos has said numerous times he did not injure that baby,” defense attorney Joseph Lopez said during opening arguments Wednesday. “There are no witnesses at all as to what happened ... how it happened, if it was intentional or accidental.

“There are doubts Santos is responsible,” Lopez said.

“Reasonable doubt he caused

the death of Kevion Bender by striking him in the head [as] the indictment charged him.”

Deputy Will County Coroner Calvin Johnson testified Wednesday seeing a red spot near Kevion’s chin, bruises on his chest and right arm, and purple and red marks on his buttocks.

At the time of Kevion’s death, Sandra Sitko and her sons were living with her father, James Sitko in Addison.

James Sitko died of a heart attack on Jan. 3, but his testimony from the first trial was repeated to the jury Wednesday.

Assistant State’s Attorney Derek Ewanic and Lopez asked Assistant State’s Attorney Chris Regis the same questions they’d asked James Sitko in September 2013. Regis recited James Sitko’s answers from the witness stand.

James Sitko had testified he never struck Kevion, and never witnessed his daughter or Kevion’s then 4-yearold brother hurt him either.

James Sitko said he saw no signs of injury or distress to the boy when his daughter left to take him to Loza’s house.

The trial is expected to continue Thursday with testimony from a pediatrician and a police evidence technician.

School Boards, which follow state law, he said.

“They’re mostly editorial and the state school board association who does the press policies has done some revisions and kind of relocated where some of the topics are located within those policies,” he said.

The schools already follow the revised policies, he said.

One new topic under search and seizure policy was a state law requiring school officials to notify students and their parents or guardian that they may request passwords or other account information for social networking websites for any disciplinary matters. This year’s student handbook for the schools already outlines that requirement, he said.

Dems blast anti-union message; GOP says Rauner setting right priorities

JOLIET – Local business leaders and lawmakers had mixed reactions Wednesday following Gov. Bruce Rauner’s State of the State speech in Springfield.

Several reacted favorably to his plans to freeze property taxes and increase education funding, but wondered how he would achieve those goals given the state’s $1.5 billion deficit.

Russ Slinkard, president and CEO of the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said presenting business-friendly policies is one thing. Making them a reality is another.

“The devil’s always in the details. And we don’t know what those are,” Slinkard said.

Rauner did announce plans to raise the minimum wage to $10 an hour in seven years, a 25 cent increase each year. He also added workers’ compensation reform as a priority to

Nancy Ammer, CEO of the Grundy Economic Development Council, said workers’ compensation was an issue with the county as well as the

state.

“If a business has a lot of employees, that expense is a real disadvantage,” she said, noting insurance and liability

costs also were an issue.

But many, including state Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, are waiting for Rauner’s budget address Feb. 18 to see how he’ll craft the state’s spending plan.

On the other hand, state Rep. Margo McDermed, R-Mokena, said Rauner gave a “truly frank assessment of our state finances.”

“Gov. Rauner has set the right priorities: creating good jobs, providing families with property tax relief and prioritizing education spending,” McDermed said. “I’m looking forward to hearing more detail in his budget address in two weeks.”

Edward Ronkowski, chairman of the Will County Republicans, agreed, adding Rauner’s entire speech was “consistent with his campaign promise.”

Rauner says his agenda will make Illinois more competitive

Bruce Rauner laid out a first-year agenda Wednesday he said will help Illinois better compete with its neighbors, largely by stripping power from labor unions, shrinking the size of government and making the state more attractive to companies looking to create jobs.

The Winnetka Republican acknowledged the proposals in his first State of the State address were ambitious, but said they are needed for Illinois to keep up with other states and repair a multibillion-dollar budget hole.

“It’s now or never for Illinois,” Rauner told members of the General Assembly at the state Capitol. “It’s time to act.”

Among his top priorities is a jobs and economic growth package Rauner said must reduce the cost of workers’ compensation and unemployment insurance and would increase Illinois’ $8.25-per-hour minimum wage to $10 over seven years. That’s a smaller increase and slower phase-in than a proposal approved by a Democratic-controlled Senate committee earlier Wednesday.

Rauner also said he wants to freeze property taxes for two years, give local government employees the right to decide whether to join a union and

begin looking for ways to eliminate or consolidate some of Illinois’ more than 7,000 units of government.

The roughly 45-minute speech provided the most detailed look to date at Rauner’s priorities, but major questions remain about how his initiatives will be paid for given the rollback of Illinois’ temporary income tax that took effect Jan. 1. Some agencies and programs already are running out of money this year, and the state faces an approximately $6 billion drop in revenue in the fiscal year that begins July 1.

Powerful House Speaker Michael Madigan and some other Democrats said they want to see more detailed pro-

posals from Rauner, and will work with him to try to find common ground.

“Where the rubber hits the road is we need to see what his plans are to address the state’s financial challenges,” said Democratic state Sen. Dan Kotowski of Park Ridge. “A very specific plan.”

Rauner is scheduled to propose his budget plan on Feb. 18. While he didn’t tip his hand completely during Wednesday’s address, he said his agenda includes income tax rates that are “low” and “competitive with other states.” He also said he wants to “modernize” the sales tax by imposing a tax on some services.

als are likely to meet opposition from the Democrats who control both chambers of the Illinois Legislature, as well as some Republicans who have strong relationships with labor unions.

In addition to creating socalled “right to work zones” where paying union dues would be voluntary, Rauner said he wants to let local voters decide whether their government unions should be able to collectively bargain over wages and benefits. He also said government unions should be prohibited from making campaign contributions, a practice the first-time elected official and former businessman described as “political dealing.”

Area students learn about Harriet Tubman

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Hundreds of students learned Wednesday about the work of abolitionist leader Harriet Tubman.

Through the play “Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad,” actors from Theatre IV showed how Tubman escaped slavery, led hundreds of other slaves to freedom, fought for women’s suffrage and worked as a Union spy during the Civil War. Despite her accomplishments – and the abolition of slavery – Tubman still, as one actor Ashlee Heyward said, “carried the burden of her color.”

“What we’re fighting now is ignorance and that war never ends,” said Dee Sims, who played Tubman.

In commemoration of Black History Month, the Rialto Square Theatre presented Theatre IV’s Harriet Tubman production to hundreds of Joliet-area students.

Students learned about the life and times of Tubman, also known as Moses, and the horrors of slavery. The performances were part of

They also learned the importance of remembering Tubman’s accomplishments and how she and other black people were still discriminated against after the Civil War. “It was mind-blowing.

How they did it with all five actors, I don’t know,” said Felix Ohrvall, a third-grade student attending from Trinity Christian Schools in Shorewood. “It was amazing. It was outstanding.”

As Tubman, Sims told students what slavery was like. Slaves were worked and tossed aside “like a wheelbarrow” and wore chains that tore at the skin, leaving them sticky with blood.

Presence Health names new regional president, CEO

ignation of Beth Hughes as regional president and CEO over the two hospitals.

Presence Health spokeswoman Tabrina Davis on Wednesday said she could shed no additional light on Hughes’ resignation.

“Obviously, as Beth resigned, the organization needed to appoint a new leader,” Davis said. “Kathleen Rhine was chosen for this role.”

Presence has the benefit of having excellent leadership among its ranks, Davis said, and with 20 years of hospital leadership experience, Rhine’s selection ensured a smooth transition.

She has overseen human resources, information technology and communications/ public relations and is a former member of the Presence St. Mary’s Hospital Board in Kankakee.

Rhine joined Presence Health in 2010 as senior vice president of patient and family centered care, and then served as the chief transformation officer, leading the merger of Provena Health and Resurrection Health Care, the company said.

Rhine spent 11 years in leadership roles for Saint Joseph Mercy Health System in Ann Arbor, Michigan before joining Presence.

She earned a master’s degree in business administration from the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan and a bachelor’s degree in Health Planning and Administration from Pennsylvania State University.

City workers still trying to keep snow off streets

Morris, who lives in the Longleat subdivision in Joliet, said her son helped free two mail trucks from the snow Tuesday. The second mail truck needed a tow truck.

“I thought it was heartily ridiculous … this is ridiculous,” she said about the city’s plowing efforts.

Road conditions in Joliet remained rough Wednesday from Sunday’s relentless snowstorm and some city officials are clamoring for more plow trucks. Throughout the week residents have complained about insufficient plowing, leaving streets snowy enough for vehicles to get stuck. City officials said in a statement that drifting snow and record snowfall created difficulties for plowing.

For Councilman Larry Hug, the problem is simple.

“It’s not rocket science.

The drivers and trucks we have do a tremendous job. …

We don’t have enough,” he said. “We’re asking them to do a job that takes eight arms and we give them four arms.”

About 30 snow plow trucks are still trying to clear the streets after Sunday’s winter storm, which left Joliet with roughly 16 inches of snow and became the second-largest snow event in city history.

Mayor Tom Giarrante said the city has brought in private contractors to help.

City staff plans a meeting to re-evaluate plowing and public works staffing, which has not been scheduled yet, he said.

“We’re working to get to plow the streets,” he said.

“We thought we’d have all the neighborhood and side streets plowed, but they’re not finished. [Public Works is] working overtime.”

City officials wrote in a

statement Wednesday: “Due to snowfall intensities, at times receiving 1 inch per hour, snow pack remains on many of the main and secondary routes throughout the city.”

Some streets appear to have never been plowed because the “hard-packed snow” that cars drove on top of became softened snow following moderating temperatures, city officials stated. But as temperatures rise and salt begins to work on the streets, residents should see the roads become more slushy.

Besides Hug, Councilman Bob O’Dekirk, who’s running for mayor against Giarrante, said more plow trucks and workers are needed. He recommended seeking help from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

“I’m asking if they can come in and help because we don’t have the resources right now to clean up the snow adequately,” he said.

The blade of the plow was caught in the van, and the truck backed up to dislodge the blade before leaving the scene, according to the report.

Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said Tuesday police had not

found any indications that the truck was a Joliet city plow.

He said city policy calls for plow drivers to stop and call in any accident when a vehicle is hit.

There were two other reported incidents of plows hitting cars parked in the street while working on the weekend snowstorm.

LOCAL BRIEFS JOLIET – A Los Angeles-based company has announced it has completed the acquisition of the former Wal-Mart Super Center on Larkin Avenue.

DealPoint Merrill plans to put a climate-controlled storage facility in the 116,134-square-foot building at 305 S. Larkin Ave. Renovations should begin in April, a spokeswoman said.

The company plans to open the facility in August.

The building will be converted into a 705-unit self-storage facility, spokeswoman Danielle Watson said. DealPoint Merrill also may use the parking area for storage of recreational vehicles and boats. The company said it may lease or sell a 1-acre retail pad on the site.

Cube Smart will operate the storage facility. Amenities will include a business center, overnight shipping and truck rentals.

The storage units will take up 85,939 square feet, with the remainder of the space used for other amenities.

Joliet officials in December discussed the pending sale of the property, vacant since 2007 when Wal-Mart moved to its location on West Jefferson Street.

JOLIET – A Crest Hill man has been charged with dissemination and possession of child pornography, Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow’s office said.

Andrew M. Veselsky, 25, of 1326 Cedarwood Drive in Crest Hill was arrested at his home TuesAndrew M. day by investiVeselsky gators from the State’s Attorney’s High Technology Crimes Unit and Romeoville Police Department officers, Glasgow’s office said in a news release Wednesday.

Veselsky was charged with two counts of dissemination of child pornography, a Class X felony carrying six to 30 years in prison upon conviction, according to the state’s attorney’s release. Probation is not a sentencing option.

Veselsky also was charged with two counts of possession of child pornography, a Class 2 felony that carries three to seven years in prison upon conviction.

He was also charged with obstructing justice.

Bond was set at $250,000. He is scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. Feb. 25 at the Will County Courthouse in Joliet.

Canceled meeting becomes issue in mayoral race

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmdia.com JOLIET – Joliet is creating a set of work rules for the City Council and may want to add an item for emergency meeting cancellations.

Mayor Tom Giarrante on Monday canceled the City Council’s workshop meeting, along with committee meetings that day, in the aftermath of the weekend snowstorm that dumped more than 15 inches of snow on the city.

The cancellation provoked an objection from Councilman Bob O’Dekirk, one of Giarrante’s opponents in the April 7 election. O’Dekirk contended Giarrante’s meeting cancellation was illegal.

O’Dekirk cited a city ordinance that requires the mayor give at least 72 hours notice before canceling a meeting. The city ordinance

Bob O’Dekirk Joliet City Councilman makes no provision for emergency cancellations.

City Attorney Martin Shanahan said neither city ordinance nor state statute provides for emergency cancellations. But he said a rule in writing may not be needed.

“A lot of towns just go by past practice,” Shanahan said.

O’Dekirk, however, questioned whether any emergency existed Monday.

“It wasn’t an emergency because City Hall was open

all day,” he said. “If it was, then they probably should have closed City Hall.”

O’Dekirk said that when he called the mayor to object to the cancellation, Giarrante was in his City Hall office.

O’Dekirk said he believes the mayor canceled the meeting to avoid a discussion about the city’s snow plowing efforts, a topic discussed at the regular meeting Tuesday.

Giarrante said he called City Manager Jim Hock on Monday morning when schools were shut down and garbage collection was delayed because of the snow.

“We were concerned about the safety of the residents that might want to come down to the meeting,” Giarrante said. “We both agreed to cancel the meeting.”

The third candidate in the mayor’s race is Andy Mihelich, chairman of the Joliet Junior College Board.

Forest Preserve District lays out five-year business plan

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Big changes are in the forecast for the Forest Preserve District of Will County.

Staff laid out a five-year business plan Wednesday to the district’s Operations Committee. The plan scales back programming, events and staff, and shifts resources to maintaining existing lands, with the district’s long-range property acquisition program coming to a close.

Some of the ideas – such as limiting special events that have become “too big and too costly” – didn’t sit well with everyone.

Committee Member Don Gould said he would not back a limit on special events, noting he heard from constituents “loud and clear” last month when the district tried to place a moratorium on such events while other avenues were explored.

The move was quickly met with pushback from the public, including people who have hosted 5K races on district property over the years.

But a policy change is needed, said John Gerl, the district’s director of finance and administration. He noted how the district’s annual Ride the Rock bicycling event, which started in 2007 as a way to introduce people to a new 16-mile route system, has ballooned from 500 cyclists to more than 1,500 riders.

“We are not looking to eliminate all these special-event permits. That’s not our intent,” Gerl said. “But we’d like to put some limits on them. They’ve gotten very large. … It’s become overwhelming.”

“They’re going to pay us $1,000 a month for 25 years,” Giarrante said. “The place was evaluated at half a million dollars.”

Giarrante also said it’s not clear yet how much Illinois & Michigan Oil will pay for environmental clean-up.

Attorney Gary Davidson told the council Tuesday night that environmental costs could be $50,000 to $100,000. Another attorney representing the company, James Capable, said the costs are likely to be more than $300,000, but Illinois & Michigan Oil won’t know until an assessment is completed.

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Mayor Tom Giarrante has named two council members he wants to see on a newly formed committee working on a future marquee for the Rialto Square Theatre.

Giarrante on Tuesday named Michael Turk and Jan Quillman as committee members. But the council must approve the appointments and cannot vote on them until Feb. 17.

The committee formed last week is being asked to come up with a plan for the Rialto marquee. A new marquee has remained on hold since Ed Czerkies pulled a $350,000 donation amid public opposition to putting his parents’ names on the marquee.

The committee will be cochaired by Chris Clott, dean of the University of St. Francis College of Business and Health Administration, and Eveann Lovero, professor and chair of the Lewis University Depart-

ment of Business Administration.

JOLIET – Illinois & Michigan Oil plans to begin work later this month on a barge service facility in Joliet, overcoming what some have called hurdles at City Hall.

The City Council on Tuesday approved the project on city-owned property in a divided vote after Mayor Tom Giarrante instead wanted to table a decision.

Illinois & Michigan Oil, typically referred to as Egan Marine in reference to the family that owns the company, plans to hire at least 30 workers over two years for the facility.

The company will clean, maintain and supply barges.

The Joliet location will be an expansion of the company’s operations in Lemont, which will continue.

The council approved a 25year lease at $1,000 a month in a 5-2 vote. Two members voted present rather than take a side.

The property at 622 Rail-

road St., along the Des Plaines River, has been owned by the city since 2010, but has not been used. The property is described as deteriorating and needs anywhere between $750,000 and $1 million for renovations.

Issues include environmental clean-up at a cost not yet determined.

“We know there are contaminants,” Councilman Bob O’Dekirk said. “Joliet has had that property for about five years. We’ve done nothing to clean it up.”

O’Dekirk was the project’s leading advocate. He said attorneys for Illinois & Michigan Oil, whom he knows, turned to him for help after City Hall appeared uninterested.

“Whatever hurdle the city put in front of Egan, Egan jumped over, and they got a new hurdle,” O’Dekirk said.

O’Dekirk, who is running against Giarrante in the April election, said the mayor tried to stop the project.

LAWRENCE F. BERG

Lawrence (Larry) Berg, La Grande, Oregon, formerly of Homer Township, was born February 23, 1934 in Joliet, to Laurence Augustus and Lucille Blanche (Fowler) Berg. He passed peacefully Friday, January 31, 2015, at home in La Grande, Oregon, surrounded by family. Larry survived cancer and kidney failure, and fought a long, valiant battle with diabetes and congestive heart failure. Larry will be cremated with a celebration of life ceremony planned for the summer of 2015.

After Larry graduated from Joliet Township High School, he married his high school sweetheart, Carol J. Markgraf, in 1954, in Joliet. He was drafted into the Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Alaska. Upon Larry’s return home, he began working for Caterpillar, Inc. There he completed a twoyear training program. Education was important to Larry, and while continuing to work, he furthered his education by graduating from Joliet Junior College, in pre-engineering studies, acquired a BA in business from Saint Francis College, and a MBA from Lewis University.

Larry worked his way into engineering ranks and became a hydraulic engineer. He finished his career as engineering manager. Working in Canada, Europe, Mexico, Asia, and all 50 United States and receiving well over 100 United States and foreign patents during his career. Many of the Caterpillar tractors today have his hydraulic and cab designs.

Larry was active throughout his life and loved to serve his community and country. Education continued to play an important role in his life.

While living in Homer, he was a member of the local school board for 21 years, 14 as a board president. He was also a member of the planning commission for 12 years, and a Boy Scout Leader for 7 years. Larry served on many national committees including the Veterans of Foreign Wars, National Fluid Power Society, and the Society of Automotive Engineers. He was a charter member of Homer Township Lions Club in 1970.

He helped form that club to assist the local school district in getting equipment and supplies for children with disabilities. Larry was president

of the La Grande club in 2003-2004 and district governor for the Lions in Eastern Oregon, serving 38 clubs during 2007-2008.

Faith and the Lutheran church were an important part of his life as well.

He was an active member of the First Lutheran Church in Joliet and served at the local and national level.

He became a member of the Zion Lutheran Church when he moved to La Grande, OR. Retiring from Caterpillar after 40 years, he moved to Mackay, Idaho.

During this time, Larry lost his sweetheart of 45 years to Alzheimer’s.

Larry continued to keep up with many of his hobbies including hiking, bicycling, and fishing, but looked for new adventures. He started to learn downhill skiing and met Helen Bohnenkamp of La Grande, Oregon on the slopes. They fell in love and were married in 1999. Together they continued to have many skiing and whitewater rafting adventures. Larry continued to use his engineering skills and became an expert in building wooden model ships; creating dozens of beautiful tall ships.

Larry is survived by his wife, Helen; son, Larry (Sylvia) Berg; daughter, Melanie (Albert Faria) Berg; brother, Ronald (Jan) Berg; four stepdaughters, seventeen grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and many dear friends.

A lifelong resident of Manhattan, Timmy was an active member in the community. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from college of St. Francis and his Master’s degree from Governors State University in public administration. He coached little league for numerous years and assisted with Vacation Bible School. Timmy was a volunteer fire fighter for two years and served as a Manhattan Village Trustee for eight years. Timmy was a current member of the Manhattan School Board District 114, serving since 1991. He also served as a member on the board of the Lincoln-Way Area Special Education District 843.

Timmy has touched many lives and will be dearly missed.

He faithfully served in God’s house every Sunday for the past 35 years.

State approves 1,000 patients to use medical marijuana

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois has now approved about 1,000 patients for the state’s medical marijuana program.

Department of Public Health spokeswoman Melaney Arnold said Wednesday about 14,000 people have started the patient registration process. Of those, about 2,100 have submitted at least part of the application.

Some newly licensed growers said they’ll be ready to provide medical marijuana this summer.

Gov. Bruce Rauner awarded licenses Monday to marijuana growers and retailers.

Qualifying patients pay an annual fee of $100 for a marijuana card. Patients aren’t allowed to grow their own cannabis and must buy it from a state-licensed retail shop.

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois tops the U.S. Green Building Council’s annual list for per capita green building space.

The council released its rankings on Wednesday. It said Illinois certified 174 green building projects during 2014, representing about 42.4 million square feet of real estate, or 3.31 square feet per Illinois resident.

That includes commercial and institutional buildings. The rankings use 2010 U.S. Census data.

By RALPH JENNINGS The Associated Press TAIPEI, Taiwan – Rescuers were searching for 12 people Thursday morning after using a crane to hoist the fuselage of a wrecked TransAsia Airways plane from a shallow river in Taiwan’s capital following a crash that killed at least 31 others.

Flight 235 with 58 people aboard – many of them travelers from China – banked sharply on its side Wednesday shortly after takeoff from Taipei, clipped a highway bridge and then careened into the Keelung River.

Rescuers in rubber rafts pulled 15 people alive from the wreckage during daylight. After dark, they brought in the crane, and the death toll was expected to rise once crews were able to search through submerged portions of the fuselage, which came to rest a few dozen yards from the shore.

Dramatic video clips apparently taken from cars were posted online and aired by broadcasters, showing the ATR 72 propjet as it pivoted

Speculation cited in local media said the crew may have turned sharply to follow the line of the river to avoid crashing into a high-rise residential area, but Taiwan’s aviation authority said it had no evidence of that.

Taiwanese broadcasters repeatedly played a recording of the plane’s final contact with the control tower in which the crew called out “Mayday” three times. The recording offered no direct clues as to why the plane was in distress.

It was the airline’s second French-Italian-built ATR 72 to crash in the past year.

Wednesday’s flight had taken off at 11:53 a.m. from Taipei’s downtown Sungshan Airport en route to the outlying Taiwanese-controlled Kinmen islands. The crew issued the mayday call shortly after takeoff, Taiwanese civil aviation authorities said.

TransAsia director Peter Chen said contact with the plane was lost four minutes after takeoff. He said weather conditions were suitable for flying and the cause of the accident was unknown.

“Actually, this aircraft in the accident was the newest model. It hadn’t been used for even a year,” he told a news conference.

Thirty-one passengers were from China, Taiwan’s tourism bureau said. Kinmen’s airport is a common link between Taipei and China’s Fujian province.

Taiwan’s Civil Aeronautics Administration said 31 people were confirmed dead, 15 were rescued with injuries and 12 were still missing. It said two people on the ground were hurt.

Part of the freeway above the river where the plane crashed was littered with debris and was closed after the accident.

Relatives of the victims had not reached the scene by dusk Wednesday but some were expected to arrive Thursday, including some flying from Beijing.

special-user permit for such events is a $25 flat rate, in addition to other rental fees.

The five-year plan calls for a sliding scale fee structure, and a limit on where events can be held and the number of participants.

Operations Committee Member Jim Moustis said he agrees with increases in special permit fees, but not limiting event sizes.

“It’s a matter of passing on the costs,” Moustis said.

“Taxpayers should not be subsidizing their events either. We have to distinguish

between the types of events.”

Early retirement program

Gerl also explained how the district’s early retirement program, which begins in July, could save the district close to $2.2 million over the next five years.

To qualify, employees have to be at least 50 years old and have 20 years experience with the district. Of the 21 who qualify, 13 have expressed clear interest in retiring early, said Marcy DeMauro, the district’s executive director.

Attacks on labor unions

McGuire criticized Rauner’s attacks on public labor unions. Rauner proposed giving local governments the decision on whether employees are required to join a union.

Another proposal would ban political donations by unions that represent government employees.

“I’m the son of a union firefighter and a husband of a union teacher. My wife and I wouldn’t have been able to give our daughter the opportunities she had without a union,” McGuire said. “As we work with the governor, we

need to recognize the role that unions have played in building the middle class.”

Rauner’s attacks on public employees and labor unions also concerned state Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Plainfield.

“Protecting the middle class means protecting the very people he is ostracizing,” Bertino-Tarrant said in a statement. “I am committed to working in a bipartisan manner to make Illinois a better place, while preserving working class values.”

When it comes to education, Rauner announced his plan is to lift the cap on public charter schools, ease the burden of testing on students and teachers, and a promise to increase funding and kindergarten through twelfth-grade education support, especially in the state’s most disadvantaged school districts.

While Rauner didn’t specify where that funding would come from, Morris Community High School Superintendent Pat Halloran said it will be interesting to see how

Rauner’s plan works.

But he also found Rauner’s focus on eliminating unfunded mandates refreshing.

Rauner also proposed to cut down the number of local governments in Illinois, and in turn, the amount of tax dollars spent on services that could be rolled together through consolidation.

In Morris, the topic of consolidating some or all of the four public school districts serving the city has been an issue for decades, Morris Elementary School District 54 Superintendent Teri Shaw said.

“We’ve discussed the feasibility of consolidating,” Shaw said. “But there is no more momentum now than 50 years ago.”

Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter said on a municipal level, consolidating is definitely an option to be considered.

“We need to take a good hard look and see where we need to consolidate,” Welter said, adding the state could look at condensing townships specifically.

New plan evident in Rauner’s speech New Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner’s first State of the State address was a different take on the real state of things in the Land of Lincoln.

For the first time in years, our governor acknowledged things have not been going so great. He admitted that neighboring states have been “kicking our tails” when it comes to providing a welcoming environment for businesses and families.

Rather than talking about tax increases and new ways to spend money, Rauner’s focus was on how the state could be efficient with the $35 billion it already spends, and how it can create an employment-friendly environment that naturally will grow revenues without asking more of taxpayers.

Rauner’s speech outlined ideas, many of which Republicans have floated before but without any hope of having them go anywhere.

There were the savings that could be realized through reforming Illinois’ justice and correctional systems, changing the way governments seek bids for construction and set the “prevailing wage” laws.

Rauner talked about the burden that workers’ compensation costs place on employers, and the need to undertake real reform to keep businesses in Illinois and attract new ones.

Taxpayer empowerment, or the idea that local property taxpayers be allowed to take control of their local governments and how they pay their employees, was a welcome proposal, as was talk of eliminating some of the almost 7,000 units of local government that Illinoisans must pay to support.

Maybe if Illinois’ taxpayers were more empowered, we wouldn’t be in this situation.

Rauner said local voters should have a choice whether they want to be a “worker empowerment zone,” where people can decide whether they want to join a labor union or not. He also said the state’s tax code was too narrow – not enough people are paying the taxes, presumably alluding to his plan to tax consumer services that we expect to hear about when he gives his budget address Feb. 18.

That address and the budget plan that follows it will be critical, as the public and legislators deserve some specifics on how Rauner will put his plans into action and how he will follow through on a pledge to increase state spending for elementary education.

There wasn’t a lot of clapping from the Democrats, whose party members have more than a two-thirds majority in both the state House and Senate. But then, why would we expect cheers from the party whose leaders have led the state into the morass in which it is mired?

Democrats in the Legislature don’t need to become cheerleaders for Rauner. But they should allow his ideas to move through the Legislature, and vote on them.

Perhaps it’s misguided optimism, but we think Democratic leaders in the Legislature grasp that voters want a new approach to the fiscal catastrophe Illinois has become on their watch.

We hope so, and hope to see some legislative debate and votes on some of these proposals in the months ahead.

Use your freedom of choice VIEWS Kathryn Jean Lopez In recent months, I’ve interviewed a flower shop owner in Washington state and a baker in Colorado who have found themselves in legal fights involving same-sex weddings. In just the matter of a few years, we’ve gone from “live and let live” rhetoric to a mandated acceptance under threat of ultimatum.

This isn’t freedom. And it’s an injustice to people who truly are deprived of human rights in North Korea or the Middle East when we use those words to refer to such trivial matters.

I mention human rights specifically because of the most recent example of this pernicious abuse of those words in Washington, D.C. The new mayor of our nation’s capital has just signed into law a “Human Rights Amendment Act,” along with a “Reproductive Health Non-Discrimination Act.” Both are attacks on religious freedom.

As Patrick Reilly, pres-

ident of the Cardinal Newman Society, puts it: “It’s ludicrous to call this ‘human rights,’ when the primary effect of both laws is to deny the fundamental right of conscience according to one’s religious beliefs. These laws would punish D.C. citizens for living and teaching their own faith, in schools and programs that are clearly religious in purpose and inspiration.”

The anticipation is that the reproductive health bill would force coverage for abortion in employee health plans. The “human rights” component involves stripping a 25-year peace treaty of sorts, which protects the conscience rights of religious schools; under the new law, schools would be mandated to sponsor gay and lesbian clubs, allow “Gay Pride” days and the like. It’s an example of government mandating a new normal at the expense of religious freedom.

And it’s not just activist groups or those opposed to abortion and traditional marriage that are concerned.

The previous D.C. mayor, Vincent Gray, warned that the Reproductive Health bill

was “legally problematic.”

Congress can fix this latest D.C. situation. But the current political environment doesn’t require just legislative diligence but a cultural meditation.

What is freedom? What is our commitment to it? What trumps it? That’s the debate we’re not having as words are manipulated, sometimes even with the best of intentions.

There should be some meeting ground, whatever one’s positions or beliefs about “love and marriage” – and the bullying, the silencing and the assaults on conscience should not be tolerated. They are not who we are.

Or are they? Those are decisions we can make when we decide how to respond to a law, or speaker, or florist or cake controversy.

With each one of these, increasingly, we determine whether we will remain a beacon of freedom and human rights.

Gruben, the East Suburban Catholic Conference Defensive Player of the Year, said he originally considered playing away from home but that attending St. Francis “is easier, cheaper, and it’s where I want to be. It’s a great program, and I think I will fit in there.”

aboard. Gruben said he feels he is at the right place physically to be ready to play on the next level immediately.

“Mike is the first ESCC Defensive Player of the Year from our school,” Sharp said. “He is a wrecking ball on the field and reads plays well. He is on the short list of the best linebackers ever at Joliet Catholic.”

Saint Xavier coach Mike Feminis, whose team went 10-3 last fall and reached the NAIA national semifinals, attended the ceremony to welcome his two recruits.

Borgra is looking forward to playing the running back and slot positions in the Cougars’ spread offense, and to rejoining his former JCA teammate, Mike Ivlow, a running back who fared well as a freshman at Saint Xavier.

“I love playing with that kid,” Borgra said. “He works hard and motivates us hard.

It’s going to be exciting to play in college with the top players from the Chicago area. I’m excited to work hard and learn the offense.”

Sharp referred to Borgra as a Walter Payton type. “He is a total football player,” he said.

“He can run, catch and block, and he does it all well. He’s a leader by example.”

Bolek, Sharp said, is one of the best safeties JCA has had.

Unfortunately, he missed the tail end of the regular season and the playoffs with a ruptured spleen, which since has healed.

“Even with the injury, his leadership never ceased,” Sharp said. “He was at every practice, and that shows a lot about his character.”

Bolek is looking forward to bringing that same mentality to Saint Xavier.

“Everybody is friends. It’s like a family there,” he said.

“Now it’s up to us to go up there and show them what we’ve got.”

JOLIET – In recent years, professional and collegiate football coaches have made it a point to mention the importance of special teams.

In fact, they represent onethird of the game. Everything else being equal, if you lose the special-teams battle, you have a difficult time coming away victorious.

At Joliet Catholic’s National Letter of Intent signing day ceremony Wednesday afternoon at the school, kicker/punter Brian Bravo was among four Hilltoppers who were honored.

He signed with Purdue.

Also signing were linebacker Mike Gruben with University of St Francis and free safety Brandon Bolek and running back Nick Borgra with Saint Xavier.

All Bravo did his senior season was make 10 of 11 field goals, including a 53-yarder on the final play of the first half in the season opener against Providence. He made 41 of 43 extra points and put 39 of 59 kickoffs into the end zone.

As a punter, he averaged 37.2 yards on 31 boots and was adept at pinning opponents deep in their territory.

In short, he was everything a coach could want.

“Brian is the best kicker ever at this school and one of the best I have seen anywhere,” JCA coach Dan Sharp said.

“When you have a kicker and punter who can pin teams in like he did – and you know that anytime you cross the 50-yard line you can score three points – you have a weapon.”

Bravo said he also had offers from Western Michigan and Drake. However, he wanted to go to the largest school possible, and a Big Ten school is as big as it gets.

“Purdue first got interested in me when I went to their kicking camp over the summer,” Bravo said. “I kept talking with them, they kept their interest up and kept in contact; and when they offered, that’s where I wanted to go.”

Bravo said Purdue has a place-kicker and a punter who will be seniors in the fall. He

Providence’s state champs sign for colleges

The Providence wide receiver signed his National Letter of Intent Wednesday to attend Notre Dame on a football scholarship.

But in Boykin’s mind, the day was more about his family members, who were on hand for the celebration.

“I’m really excited for my family, more than I am for me,” he said. “It’s a blessing that I am able to do this. I did it all for them. I know they’re really proud of me.”

Boykin and his fellow receiver, Nate Vejvoda, who will play tight end at Iowa, were the Celtics’ headline signings.

Four other members of the Class 7A state championship football team, including quarterback Justin Hunniford, also signed.

Meanwhile, two of Providence’s outstanding girls soccer players, Tess Barrett and Cory Griffith, were honored.

They signed to continue their careers at Valparaiso.

Boykin said he has been in touch with all the other high school players who committed to Notre Dame.

“We’re in the top 10 right now,” he said. “I assume we will be when the signing day is over. I’m really excited to be part of this group that is coming in.”

He has not completed his career as a Celtic, however, and he said he never will forget his teammates in New Lenox.

“Going on to Notre Dame is another chapter in my life,” he said. “But I will never forget anyone here. Never. I’m proud of all these guys who are here with me today, especially Nate [Vejvoda].”

Boykin dispels the notion that his presence helped Vejvoda get noticed by recruiters.

“Nate got himself noticed,” he said.

“He’s the well-known one,” Vejvoda said of Boykin. “But all the scouts who were here to see him talked to me, too.”

North Central reached the national semifinals in 2013 and missed qualifying for the playoffs by one game in 2014.

“They have a good program, and I just thought it was the best fit for me,” Hunniford

said of the Cardinals.

The other football players honored at Wednesday’s ceremony were center Joe Zemen, defensive back Justin Gardner and linebacker Emmet Trost.

Zemen is headed to Rose-Hulman, Gardner to Monmouth and Trost to Carthage.

“Obviously, our goals and team accomplishments were the most important thing during the season,” Providence coach Mark Coglianese said. “Now these guys are getting much-deserved recognition of their own.”

Coglianese said one of the positive aspects of coaching is being able to follow the careers of players who came through the program.

“It’s nice to be able to watch them play on TV,” he said.

“And anytime they come back here, all the kids are excited to see them.”

PLAINFIELD – While most of the attention on the February college signing day goes to athletes headed to Division I football programs such as Cody Conway, Quintin Hoosman and Jack Kramer, they were happy to share the attention with several others at Plainfield North.

That’s because the three Tiger athletes are longtime friends and teammates with many of the other 17 who also made their selections known at Wednesday’s ceremony.

North athletic director Ron Lear organized an event in which all of the athletes were recognized individually, and later each one gave a speech thanking those who’ve helped them to reach this big moment – all in front of a large gathering of families and students.

Kramer is headed to Bowling Green State University, Hoosman will be going to Northern Illinois University, and Conway is bound for Syracuse University. In addition, coach Tim Kane’s program had four others who will continue their careers at the next level.

Hoosman, the workhorse running back who earned allstate accolades after rushing for more than 2,400 yards, received early attention from NIU, which made his decision to sign with coach Rod Carey’s Huskies that much easier.

“Northern Illinois is obviously one of the best programs in Illinois, and they get better every year,” Hoosman said.

“They followed me since I was a junior and never looked away, and I couldn’t be more thankful for that. And as long as I can remember, I wanted to go there.

“The best thing is that most of these kids who were up here, I’ve been playing with

Conway, another big presence along the line who also was an all-state performer, will be playing on the offensive side for coach Scott Shafer’s Orange. He’s currently the man in the middle for the Tigers’ successful basketball team.

“It’s really exciting, especially with the class that we have coming in,” Conway said.

“It’s a great thing to be going somewhere like Syracuse and to be a part of their great history. I had a great bond with the coaching staff, and that was

reassured when I went on my visit.

“Coach Kane was hard on us at times, but he was trying to do what was best for us to make sure that we’re ready for the next level. I feel like as of now, I’ve done most of the things that I need to do but I have to keep getting faster and stronger before camp starts.”

Kramer, a three-year performer for the Tigers who played along both lines, will focus on the defensive side when he joins coach Dino Babers’ Falcons program. He plans to major in sports management at the Mid-American Conference school.

“I’ve been coming to these every year that we’ve had them and I used to watch my peers

stand up here and I sat in the audience and wondered what it would be like to be up here one day and I’ve finally gotten the opportunity,” Kramer said. “I’ve worked harder than anyone I know and had my ups and downs.

“Bowling Green State gave me my best opportunity to further my career and education. I can’t wait to get there to play with some of the guys that met on my official visit Coach Kane has been like my second dad and he’s given me the opportunity to meet these coaches and to find a home at Bowling Green.”

kjasnica@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Emotions filled the auditorium Wednesday afternoon at Plainfield East High School, and for good reason.

Ten football players, who helped the Bengals advance to the IHSA state playoffs for the first time in 2013 and then became the first back-to-back playoff team in school history in 2014, signed National Letters of Intent to continue their football careers in college.

Family and friends in the audience teared up as each of the seniors gave emotional speeches about how thankful they are to reach the next level of their athletic careers.

While every player was emotional, some also lightened up the mood.

Donte Hartsfield was the first senior to smile and put on his Drake University hat, as if he had been drafted.

Brandon Rivera quoted a popular football player in today’s media.

“I’m just here so I won’t get fined,” Rivera said when he sat down.

Bound for Missouri Valley College, Rivera quickly added, “That’s just a joke.”

for helping them reach the next level of their athletic career, but each had something else to add.

Juleyan Givens, who signed to play at Wisconsin-Stevens Point, was the first player to speak after Plainfield East athletic director Tim Torkelson opened the ceremony.

After thanking everyone who helped him make it to the next level, Givens talked about how playing football made him a better person and will continue to do so for the next four years.

“I’ve been playing football my whole life, and I can say it’s never let me down,” Givens said. “It’s kept me out of trouble, made me a better person and now is helping me further my academic journey, which overall is the thing that matters most.”

Austin Goffinet stepped to the table next. Compared to the other nine seniors, Goffinet experienced the most injury problems.

After breaking his leg and tearing his meniscus twice, Goffinet returned and played without injury his senior

year. He persevered while many would have given up and next year, he will play at Robert Morris.

Western Michigan-bound Daniel Jackson also battled back from a late junior injury.

“I kept thinking, ‘What if this was my time that I would have to stop playing football?’ but with the support of my family and friends, you guys got me to the point where I am right now,” Jackson said. “I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Plainfield East football and Plainfield East athletics.”

While each player said he is excited to reach the next level, they also said that they will remember where they came from.

“To all of my teammates on the basketball and football teams, thank you,” said Cole Kotopka, who signed with Grand Valley State. “I had the most amazing time as your teammate, and I will never forget all the times we had on and off the field. I wish you guys all the best on whatever path you choose. We will always be Bengals.”

By JORDAN GODWIN The Associated Press HOUSTON – James Harden had 27 points and the Houston Rockets picked up a 101-90 victory over the Bulls on Wednesday night despite missing the rebounding of the injured Dwight Howard.

Harden scored 15 of his points in a pivotal second quarter that helped the Rockets build a lead that the Bulls they never relinquished.

The Rockets have won five of six. The Bulls lost their third straight game for the first time all season and have now lost four of five.

Harden overwhelmed the Bulls in the second, menacing small forward Jimmy Butler in multiple one-on-one battles to score 13 consecutive points in the fading minutes of the first half.

Derrick Rose scored 23 points, playing in his 12th consecutive game for the first time since the 2010-11 season.

Jimmy Butler led the Bulls with 27 points.

Despite the win, the Rock-

ets missed Howard’s boards.

He was out for a fifth straight game with a right knee injury, and the Bulls’ big men dominated the glass, 60-47.

Joakim Noah himself pulled down 19 rebounds in 32 minutes.

In all other categories, however, the Rockets owned the Bulls’ big men, outscoring the Bulls, 50-28, in the paint and notching eight blocks to just five from the Bulls, who entered the game as the league’s leaders in blocks at 6.7 per game.

In their previous matchup in Chicago on Jan. 5, the Bulls won, 114-105, assisted largely by attempted 30 free throws, making 27, while the Rockets made just 3 of 5. Wednesday’s game was more balanced, with Houston converting 17 free throws, while the Bulls made 20.

The Bulls jumped out to an early lead as the Rockets struggled to convert shots, especially from beyond the arc.

The Rockets eventually found their touch and finished the first quarter with the game tied at 27.

Familiar names finish atop team recruiting rankings

By STEVE MEGARGEE The Associated Press On a day when the new faces of college football made their school choices official, some familiar names finished atop the team recruiting standings.

Here’s a look at some of the notable events on a day that revealed the drama doesn’t necessarily end after a recruit makes a nationally televised announcement.

DUEL AT THE TOP: Which school fared the best? It depends on which recruiting service you follow. Southern California topped the Rivals and Scout team recruiting rankings as of 5 p.m., while Alabama led the ESPN and 247Sports standings. USC’s rise is noteworthy because this marked the first year it could sign a full class since coming off probation. “It’s a Pete Carroll type of class,” said Mike Farrell, the national recruiting director for Rivals. “Now

they’ve just got to put it together on the field.” It came as no surprise that these two schools led the way, as evidenced by Rivals’ annual rankings. Alabama topped the Rivals rankings from 2008 to 2009 and from 2011 to 2014, while Southern California finished first from 2004 to 2006 and in 2010. The only school other than USC or Alabama to top the Rivals rankings since 2004 is Florida in 2007.

BIG DAY IN L.A.: USC wasn’t the only Los Angeles-area school with reason to celebrate. UCLA soared up the team standings Wednesday by getting late commitments from some top prospects, including tight end Chris Clark, running back Soso Jamabo, offensive lineman Josh Wariboko, safety Nathan Meadors and wide receiver Cordell Broadus (the son of rapper Snoop Dogg). In the process, UCLA showed its ability to recruit nationally.

KEEPING UP THE SUSPENSE: In nationally televised announcements Wednesday morning, defensive end Byron Cowart selected Auburn and linebacker Roquan Smith declared he was going to UCLA. But that didn’t stop the drama sur-

rounding the recruitments of these two heralded prospects.

Auburn wasn’t sure it had Cowart – rated by Rivals as the nation’s No. 1 recruit – until his letter of intent arrived nearly seven hours after his announcement. UCLA still hadn’t received Smith’s paperwork by 5 p.m. Wednesday, which at least raised the possibility the Georgia prospect might be reconsidering.

GATORS RISE FROM DEPTHS:

Buried below most Power 5 programs in the team recruiting standings for the last few weeks, Florida closed with a flourish under new coach Jim McElwain. The Gators’ flurry of late commitments was headlined by consensus fivestar offensive tackle Martez Ivey and defensive end CeCe Jefferson. Ivey is rated as the nation’s No. 2 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite, which takes into account all the major recruiting services.

Florida’s late surge helped the Gators rise to a Top 25 team

ranking in most services. It still isn’t a great class by Florida’s lofty standards, but it’s a whole lot better than what some Gator fans had feared.

CREATIVE ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The recruits found plenty of interesting ways to make their decisions without resorting to the standard practice of choosing from a group of hats. Iman Marshall, rated as the nation’s No. 1 cornerback by the 247Sports Composite, disclosed his choice with the online release of an elaborate video that ended with him putting on a USC hat as he walked toward the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown spoke in French and German as well as English at the news conference in which he announced he was signing with Notre Dame. Jamabo put his own spin on the “hat game” when he pulled out a pair of caps to indicate what he said were “his top two schools,” but both hats were from UCLA.

These are just a few traits some people might not equate with traditional masculinity in our culture, according to Steve Hinkle of Joliet. But biblically, they are all fruits of the spirit and traits men and women should strive to acquire, he added.

Hinkle, who founded the former Joliet-area church Istoria in 2009, has worked with young people for more than 20 years as a youth pastor and high school teacher.

He is blogging and writing a book he hopes will encourage young men who might not fit the traditional – or stereotypical – mold of masculinity.

He plans to call his book “Male Fail? The Bible, Masculinity and the Pursuit of Happy Socks,” which will explore and address issues of masculinity and gender stereotypes in both the Christian church and American culture.

“The main thing my book will talk about is what the Bible says – and doesn’t say – about masculinity, how our culture and society define gendered stereotypes, and whether there is room for boys and men who don’t seem to fit that macho mold,” Hinkle said.

Hinkle said he has felt the pressure to live up to stereotyped standards, particularly when he first read John Eldredge’s “Wild At Heart: Discovering the Secret of a Man’s Soul,” a popular book about masculinity and con-

Lack of athleticism marked Hinkle as a young adult, too.

In high school, he recalled the time when he broke his collarbone in wrestling. He cried in class, and his classmates made fun of him. The coach told him to ‘Man up,’ ” Hinkle said.

Hinkle said he knows he isn’t alone in those kinds of experiences. Many times, ideas about what men should

– or shouldn’t – do are at odds with the reality of who they are.

“Male Fail?” isn’t a book against macho men, Hinkle said, but he believes everyone is different and should be affirmed and encouraged.

“Sometimes, the church and Christianity have this one ideal way of masculinity,” Hinkle said. “I want to show men and young men out there who are like me that you are still a man. You are just unique in your own way. That doesn’t make you less manly.”

But it’s not just the matter of creativity versus sports as hobbies. Some masculine ideals actually are hurting men, Hinkle said, such as the idea

FAITH BRIEFS Will County Board honors St. Paul baseball team

JOLIET – St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School’s baseball team was honored by the Will County Board and the Will County executive at a Jan. 15 meeting.

The Giants were recognized for their outstanding achievement in 2014, when the team defended its 2013 title by again winning the Class 1A IESA State Championship on Oct. 4.

This was the sixth appearance in the Illinois Elementary School Association State Baseball Tournament for St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School Giants baseball.

St. Paul is the only grade school in Illinois to boast four IESA State Baseball Championships in the last decade. Titles also were earned in 2006, 2007 and 2013.

The 2014 IESA Class 1A State Champions include: eighth-graders Josh Bolek, Caden Boggetto, Max Cullen, Dolan Glasgow, Christian Heino, Dylan Hensley, Jack McGinnis, Reed Ohlson, Sebastian Pantoja, Dean Procarione and Alex Vera; and seventh-graders Vinny DeFilippo, Danny Mangun, Owen Roesel, Cameron Seeman and Nathan Seeman.

Girl Scouts provide green plants to classrooms

PLAINFIELD – Three seventh-graders from St. Mary Immaculate Parish School in Girl Scout Troop 70169 donated and delivered 40 green plants to the classrooms at their school.

Every teacher received a Peace Lily for her classroom, and many teachers also received either a Sanseveria, Pothos, Aglaonema or Schefflera. These plants require little care and are good at cleaning the air.

With a GPA of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale, Babich’s favorite subject is literature. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Math National Honor Society and International Thespian Society.

Babich is the recipient of the Franciscan/Carmelite Scholarship and a member of the Drama Club (president), Marching Band and Scholastic Bowl Team. He is the son of Bonnie and Robert Babich of Channahon Robert and a member Babich of Channahon United Methodist Church.

In addition, Babich is active in his church, the Boy Scouts of America and the Channahon Park District. He is an Eagle Scout from BSA Troop 444 and plans to become an adult leader after he turns 18.

the infection. They can prescribe a “broad spectrum” antibiotic that will treat most types of bacteria that cause cellulitis.

In most cases, cellulitis improves within a day or two after antibiotics are started.

If you have mild cellulitis, you can usually treat it at home with antibiotics taken by mouth. Applying warm compresses and elevating the infected area can help. If you have severe cellulitis, you may need to be treated in the hospital with antibiotics given into a vein.

If symptoms don’t improve or if they worsen within the first two or three days of treatment, contact your doctor. It could mean you need a different antibiotic.

To help prevent cellulitis: • Prevent skin injury.

Wear protective gloves while gardening and working outdoors. Wear long sleeves and trousers while hiking. Avoid going barefoot outdoors.

• Treat minor skin wounds promptly. Gently wipe away dirt and wash with antibiotic soap.

Apply antibiotic ointment and cover with a clean bandage.

• Contact your doctor to treat all deep wounds and animal bites.

Finally, call your doctor whenever a skin injury becomes red, warm, swollen or tender. Other conditions besides cellulitis may be the cause.

But it takes a health professional to make the diagnosis accurately, and to know when antibiotics are necessary.

Dear Doctor K: My son developed a large, red, swollen area on his arm.

The doctor called it cellulitis. My son is better now, but I’d like to learn more about cellulitis and what can be done to prevent it.

Dear Reader: Cellulitis is a serious bacterial infection of the skin. Bacteria live on the surface of our skin, but the skin is built to keep the bacteria from getting inside us. If they get beneath the surface of the skin, and then into the tissues below the skin, they can make trouble.

When our skin gets injured, bacteria can break through the skin’s protective outer layer.

This typically happens at the site of an injury, such as a cut, puncture, sore, burn or bite. It’s even more likely if we have had recent surgery that cut through the skin, or have a catheter carrying medicines into a vein.

Other things that make a person vulnerable to cellulitis are edema (swelling), poor blood flow, or a skin rash that creates breaks in the skin.

Once beneath the skin’s surface, bacteria multiply. They make chemicals that cause inflammation. Cellulitis is the most common type of bacterial infection.

With cellulitis, the affected skin feels warm and is usually red, swollen and painful.

There may be a spreading network of red streaks in the skin. (I’ve put a photo of an arm affected by cellulitis on my website, AskDoctorK.com.) Fever and a general feeling of illness often accompany cellulitis.

Many types of bacteria can cause cellulitis.

However, by far the most common are streptococcus (“strep”) and staphylococcus (“staph”).

Cellulitis is treated with antibiotics. Doctors don’t need to identify which specific bacteria caused
