Dog found dead in cage on side of the road in Troy Township

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com TROY TOWNSHIP – A emaciated pit bull died Tuesday morning after being left in freezing temperatures on the side of the road.

At about 7 a.m., a bus driver passing near County Line and Bell Roads in Troy Township saw the animal in a wire cage set on top of a snowbank on the east side of the road and called police.

A sheriff’s deputy arrived to find the dog already had died and waited for Will County Animal Control Officer Mindy Pomykala at the scene.

“She was a dark gray female pit bull with a pink nylon collar who appeared

extremely emaciated and malnourished,” Pomykala said.

“She was not frozen and had been left there somewhat recently.”

Pomykala said the dog had been left in the wire cage with just a blanket that was soiled with urine and feces.

“It was a really ugly sight,” she acknowledged.

There were no identifying markings on the cage or collar.

Pomykala said it did not appear the pit bull had been used for dog fighting, but was “obviously neglected.”

Pomykala asked anyone with information about this dog to call Animal Control at 815-462-5633 or Will County Sheriff’s Police at 815-727-

8574.

She said there have been no other reports of similar incidents.

The colder weather has brought animal control officers many calls from concerned pet owners asking about the wellness of animals being left outside, Pomykala said.

Animal control officers recommend all pets be brought inside in winter weather, but a doghouse on the property makes it legal for owners to have them outside.

“If you absolutely cannot bring the animal inside, set up some warm dry straw on the floor of the doghouse for them to conserve body heat,” Pomykala said.

Man arrested for posting adult video of ex-girlfriend

Matthew R. Schwertfeger, 28, recently posted to a pornographic website several videos that showed him having sex with a 22-year-old woman, Deputy Chief Robert Pawlisz said.

“He used her name in the titles of the videos which, without her permission, is illegal,” Pawlisz said.

WILL COUNTY – Toxicology tests have confirmed a man found dead last month in a Lewis University dorm room died from alcohol poisoning.

Elvis Dominguez-Mejia, 22, had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.437 at the time of his death on Jan. 16, Will County Coroner Patrick

K. O’Neil said Tuesday. The legal limit for driving in Illinois is a blood-alcohol level of 0.08.

Dominguez-Mejia was not a Lewis student, but was visiting a friend residing in Fitzpatrick Hall the night before, authorities said.

The student told investigators Dominguez-Mejia showed up drunk the night before and they continued drinking in the room. When the student

woke up to go to class he found Dominguez-Mejia unresponsive on the floor.

O’Neil ruled the manner of Dominguez-Mejia’s death as accidental.

The student, who is older than 21, will face an administrative review and possible hearing, a University spokeswoman said last month. Romeoville police said no criminal charges resulted from their investigation.

Wadsworth donation and endowment fund will help

JOLIET – Greg Peerbolte wants to raise the profile of the Joliet Area Historical Museum with new exhibits and more support from the community.

Peerbolte, the museum’s executive director, has plans to expose the museum to a larger audience and tell them the stories of the city through exhibits such as “The Emergence of Joliet: Art, Industry & Urbanization,” which shows how the Joliet transformed into a city in the late 1920s and early 1930s.

It’s the kind of exhibit that may please many residents.

“You’ll walk away being more proud of Joliet,” he said.

Helping the cause is a donation the museum received from Brent Wadsworth, founder of Plainfield-based Wadsworth Golf Construction Co., on Jan. 30. The donation, the amount of which has not been disclosed, will be used to begin an endowment fund for the museum.

Peerbolte called it a “game changer” for the museum.

“It’s on our radar and it’s our goal to grow this fund,” he said. “That’s how we feel we’ll be good stewards of this gift.”

The museum, which opened in 2002, is a nonprofit organization that receives about 50 percent of its funding from the city. Peerbolte said the museum is financially stable, and the staff is always looking for opportunities to gain more community support and hold more special events.

Peerbolte said the museum not only gets attention from residents but international visitors, as well. The museum has a Route 66 Welcome Center. Peerbolte said Route 66, which passes the museum’s doors, brings peo-

Since 2009, the museum has received more than 20,000 visitors annually, he said.

The museum’s latest exhibit, “The Emergence of Joliet,” gathers illustrations of the city in its transformational period, along with tools and devices typically used in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Popular songs from the period add to the senses of the exhibit, he said.

The exhibit also connects this period to the present day, with new developments in the downtown area such

as Joliet Junior College City Campus Center.

Peerbolte said it’s one of the museum’s more edgy and cerebral exhibits, but it’s the kind that shows how the museum staff and its partners seek to tell more Joliet-centric stories.

“It’s going to be a good template for work on other exhibits in the future,” he said.

The illustrations of the city in the exhibit were created by Adele Fay Williams, a journalist, artist and civic leader who worked for the The Herald-News in the early 20th Century. The drawings

ied under Fresh Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro, show scenes such as a rainy evening on Chicago Street.

The creation of the exhibit was the result of a partnership with the museum staff and Lewis University staff.

More than 20 history and art students from the university were involved, said Dennis Cremin, Lewis University history professor.

He said in the 1920s more than 50 percent of the nation’s population became city dwellers and Williams’ drawings capture that transitional time.

Road rage claim of self-defense didn’t work

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Lemont man convicted of second-degree murder for punching another driver during a 2011 road rage encounter in Romeoville faces between three and 20 years in prison.

Christopher Yeoman claimed he was defending himself when he threw the punch that eventually led to the death of 64-year-old Frank Egas. But a jury decided he was guilty of second-degree murder after deliberating for five hours Monday night.

Yeoman, 41, has yet to be sentenced. He has no crimi-

nal record. He could possibly receive probation for the second-degree murder conviction instead of serving up to 20 years in prison on that charge.

But the aggravated battery charges, for which Yeoman Christopher also was found Yeoman guilty, are not probational offenses, so he will serve at least three years behind bars, according to the Will County State’s Attorney’s office.

Yeoman, his wife and their three children were riding in a minivan on New Avenue

when they got behind a red Toyota Solara that remained stopped at 135th Street instead of turning on the green arrow.

Yeoman testified when he gave a “hurry up” tap of the horn, Egas, the driver of the Solara, laid on his own horn and appeared irate.

The two vehicles headed west on 135th Street where Egas swerved in front of the Yeoman’s minivan several times to keep them from passing him, Yeoman said. When the vehicles reached Route 53, Christopher and Amanda Yeoman got out to “converse” with Egas about his driving before walking back to their van. Witnesses said Egas re-

mained by his car, but “pointed to his chin ... telling [Yeoman] ‘Hit me.’ ” Yeoman ran back and punched Egas in the face, knocking him to the ground where the back of his head struck the pavement. Experts in forensic pathology testified Egas suffered brain injuries that led to his death three months later at the age of 64.

Yeoman and defense attorney Cliff Johnson never denied he struck Egas but argued he was “defending himself” from the belligerent man. Jurors didn’t buy it.

“Christopher Yeoman sucker punched Mr. Egas out of sheer anger and now a se-

nior citizen is dead, the victim of irrational violence,” Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said in a written statement after the verdict was reached. “[Assistant State’s Attorneys Christopher Koch and Peter Wilkes] left no doubt in the minds of jurors that this was a murder resulting from a senseless incident of road rage and not a case of self-defense.”

Yeoman was convicted of second-degree murder, aggravated battery of a senior citizen, aggravated battery on a public way and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm. He is scheduled to be sentenced April 4.

Lincoln Awards are given in recognition for efforts to promote tourism. Limacher had been nominated by Robert Navarro, chief executive officer of the Heritage Corridor Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Possible snow removal changes on agenda for Lockport council

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – City council members may decide if residents who push snow from their driveways and sidewalks into city streets will get fined.

At Wednesday’s City Council meeting, council members will learn more about a proposed ordinance to fine residents if they toss snow or ice outside of

their driveway or sidewalk, Fourth Ward Alderman Denise Marynowski said. She said the fine could be $25.

She said she is waiting to see what Public Works officials will say about the ordinance since they are requesting it.

“But I lean toward finding it agreeable because it’s annoying when you come down a street and you got these piles of snow here and there,” she said.

City workers have to plow areas again when residents shovel their snow into the streets, she said, and it can become a hazard.

Second Ward Ald. Kelly Turner doesn’t find the proposed ordinance agreeable.

He said residents, especially senior citizens, already have difficulties from trying to get rid of snow that sometimes block their driveway.

“It’s a hardship and who

isn’t tired of the snow?” he said.

At Wednesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, council members also are set to learn about a proposal to get rid of charges to vehicle stickers by raising electric bill taxes by 1 percent, Marynowski said.

She said she considered it an unfair tax because people who don’t have a car and don’t buy vehicle stickers as a result will have to pay more

for an electric bill.

Turner also opposes the idea.

The council also is scheduled to consider an intergovernmental agreement between the Will/Grundy Major Crimes Task Force and city officials.

Wednesday’s City Council meeting will begin at 7 p.m. and will be followed by the Committee of the Whole meeting at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, 222 E. Ninth St.

Residents voice disapproval of board members

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Township Park District regular board meeting turned into a joke for residents attending Tuesday evening.

Residents sarcastically laughed all evening at comments made by board President Peter Hurtado, Vice President Janet Silosky and Commissioner Peter Steinys on agenda items.

“They’ve turned the park district into a laughing stock,” outspoken board critic Jamey Alwood said about the three commissioners forming a board majority and approving several questionable decisions in the past nine months.

Local elected officials also attended the meeting, chiding the board majority for being irresponsible to taxpayers.

“This is a fiasco,” Plainfield Village Trustee Margie Bonuchi said, speaking as a village resident. “That is such an abuse and misuse of your responsibilities. And you should be shameful.”

Plainfield Township Trustee Matthew Starr and members of the Plainfield Township Republican Organization attended the meeting. Starr spoke to the board, specifically targeting Silosky for allegedly demanding the organization to support the board majority.

After Silosky revealed a story that alleged Hurtado using the park district for his own financial gain during a special board meeting Jan. 29, more accusations of nepotism emerged Tuesday.

Members of the public spoke out against the park district approving IT contracts

related to former Executive Director Garrett Peck’s business, Magiktech, and Steinys allegedly being involved with his son-in-law getting a job with the park district’s maintenance staff.

The board also heard from Hitchcock Design Group, the company that entered into an agreement with Peck in November, before his resignation, to replace the park district’s planning department.

Steve Konters, a Hitchcock representative, introduced the company to the board and answered questions about the services Hitchcock is providing, including finalizing plans for the DuPage River Trail and bridge.

The board discussed whether Hitchcock would be retained for services in the future.

“Obviously, this is not the best time for you to be here,” Commissioner Mary Kay Ludemann said to Konters, drawing more sarcastic laughs from residents.

Ludemann and Commissioner Larry Newton said they were against continuing with Hitchcock because in the end, it might cost more than re-forming a new planning department.

Interim Executive Director Gene Coldwater said former Superintendent of Planning Cameron Bettin has been helping the park district by working with Hitchcock as part of his consulting role created from his exit contract.

The board approved a public social media policy for the park district, and the majority – Ludemann and Newton dissented – approved a change to the board manual that could allow one-year terms to the board.

In pushing forward with Mayor Tom Giarrante’s call for an investigation into an apparent leak of documents relating to an ongoing Evergreen Terrace lawsuit, Joliet City Attorney Jeff Plyman sought approval of council members Tuesday night to meet with the Will County State’s Attorney.

“I received a call from the state’s attorneys office to meet with them a few weeks ago, and since it involves attorney-client matters and closed session matters, I needed permission from the council,” Plyman said following Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

The state’s attorneys office will look into whether anything illegal took place when the legal document – prepared

by Plyman and distributed to council members during a closed session – ended up in the hands of Evergreen Terrace apartment owners “without explanation,” he said.

“The review will be centered on the release of a document … and whether or not that document was released without authority to third parties,” Plyman said.

The apartment owners are involved in an ongoing condemnation case with city officials over ownership of the Evergreen Terrace complex.

Council members agreed to the investigation last month during a closed session.

Council member Larry Hug suggested Tuesday that the city release all closed session tapes relating to the decade-long legal battle, but only after the lawsuit is settled.

“I also want to get it out there ahead of time that as soon as we’re done with this case …

I will be moving to release not only the minutes but the tapes going all the way back to 2004.

The public has a right to know what has happened once we’re done with this,” Hug said.

In other news, the Joliet City Council Economic Development Committee recommended to council members Tuesday night to hire the Birmingham-based retail consult-

ing firm, Retail Strategies LLC, in efforts to bring more business to the area.

But before the council decides whether to hire the company, Mayor Tom Giarrante, who chairs the economic development committee, said he wants to invite Retail Strategies LLC to the city’s strategy session this weekend so council members can hear from the company firsthand. The sessions are scheduled for 6 p.m.

Feb. 11 and 12 at Fire Station 1. They are open to the public.

“The presentations that them and other two companies gave were given to the committee only,” Giarrante said. “This way, the council can hear what this company has to offer.”

The invitation to present comes after the three-member committee heard separate presentations over the past few months from Retail Strategies LLC, Buxton, and Retail Coach, all of which specialize in data analysis and linking municipalities with retailers.

Buxton also was a front-runner among committee members, but Giarrante told the council he received an email that the city’s contact for Buxton recently resigned.

Council member Larry Hug said “the loss of our contact [with Buxton] and the failure of a new contact to show up” was not the only factor that made him lean towards Retail Strategies LLC. Hug said he thought all companies were “very well qualified” but liked how Retail Strategies would “go a step further” by reaching out to the retail industry on behalf of the city. He said he was initially torn between the Fort Worth, Texas-based Buxton and Retail Strategies. Cost, experience and services were the biggest factors, he said.

“Retail Strategies comes with a lot of experience. They actually not only set you up to recruit, they do the recruiting for you of individual businesses,” Hug said.

The recommendation calls for the city to enter into a three-year contract totaling $100,000, with the first year costing $50,000.

Man faces multiple charges for alleged assault on ex-girlfriend JOLIET – Justin E. Ruch, 33, appeared in court Monday on charges of menacing his ex-girlfriend.

Before seeing the judge on those charges, the New Lenox man was handcuffed and arrested by Will County Sheriff’s deputies for allegedly threatening the woman when she was at the courthouse last week seeking an

order of protection against him.

Ruch also is now facing charges of criminal sexual assault after evidence was processed by the crime lab from the initial incident, Will County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said.

On Jan. 9, a 32-year-old woman called police to her Joliet Township home after Ruch allegedly broke down the front door, threw her across a bed and sexually as-

pear in court Monday.

“On Friday, the victim was in court with the assistant state’s attorney to extend the order of protection she had against him when he came in and sat directly behind her,” Hoffmeyer said.

Ruch now faces nine felonies and two misdemeanors, according to jail records and would need to put up yet another $150,000 bond to be released before his next court appearance.

Cops, city agree on contracts

Expanded shifts, more breaks, more complete days off expected

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – City police will see more complete days off and longer shifts after the city council approved the negotiated contracts for two of the city’s unions.

The negotiated contracts with the Metropolitan Alliance of Police Crest Hill patrol officers and sergeants were accepted by the Crest Hill City Council during its regular meeting Monday night.

“The negotiations process was conducted respectfully,” Mayor Ray Soliman said.

“And I believe that this agreement is a fair contract for both the union and the city of Crest Hill.”

The contract runs through April 30, 2018, and includes a change from regular 8-hour work days to 12-hour work days. While officers work longer hours, they’ll have more breaks, City Administrator John Tomasoski said.

“The tradeoff is there,” Tomasoski said. “The shifts are longer, but they have more full days off.”

The salary provisions of the five-year contract started May 1 and granted city police salary increases of 1.5 per-

cent. The next three years include 2 percent increases each year, and the final year, starting May 1, 2017, will grant a 2.5 percent increase.

Alderman Charles Convery said the city will see how the 12-hour work days work for law enforcement.

“I feel that it’s a good contract,” Convery said. “And I’m glad that we went five years because we don’t have to go back every three years to negotiate.”

The city is currently in negotiations with the third union, the International Union of Operating Engineers – Local 150.

All three of the city’s union contracts expired in April 2013.

The City Council also approved a waiver of fees and an annual yearbook ad for Crest Hill Baseball, which Convery said is an important institution in the community.

“The work that Joe and Donna Marshall have done for those kids is just great,” Convery said.

A $9,671 payment for the use of Wescom’s dispatch services and some paperwork pending from the state’s 2006 Motor Fuel Tax were also approved.

and taxpayers will save billions of dollars,” the lawmaker from Hinsdale told reporters afterward.

Dillard and Rauner both said that if elected they would convene a task force of business and other leaders to analyze Illinois’ tax structure and recommend changes. They said their reviews would include whether to impose a tax on services, provided it would allow

other tax rates to be reduced.

Brady, of Bloomington, said there’s “no question” that the state should broaden its tax base to reduce rates. But he said Illinois first must find a way to require out-of-state companies that sell products in Illinois online to pay state taxes. The Illinois Supreme Court last year threw out a law that imposed the so-called “Amazon tax” on some digital sales.

“It’s an unfair advantage to out-of-state retailers,” Brady said.

But Rutherford called a tax on services “a bad idea.”

“When government starts to be able to tax something new, they’re going to look for the next thing new after that,” he said.

The Republican who wins the nomination in the March 18 primary likely will face Quinn in November. The Chicago Democrat faces a lesser-known challenger, anti-violence activist Tio Hardiman of Hillside, in the primary.

NAPERVILLE – The four Republicans running for Illinois governor agreed Tuesday the state needs to cut spending and change its tax structure, but differed on how best to do so, with all but one saying they’d consider a new tax on such services as haircuts and landscaping if it meant lowering tax rates overall.

State Sens. Bill Brady and Kirk Dillard, businessman Bruce Rauner and Treasurer Dan Rutherford faced off in a debate that focused heavily on Illinois’ struggling economy and how to improve its business climate.

All four candidates said they support allowing a temporary income tax increase approved in 2011 to roll back as scheduled on Jan. 1 – a move they say will make the state friendlier to business and provide much-needed relief to residents. The rollback, which is likely to be the subject of heated debate in the Legislature this year, is expected to reduce state revenue by about $1.6 billion next fiscal year, state officials said Tuesday.

Rutherford, however, repeated his position that scaling back the tax hike may not be

immediately possible because he can’t anticipate what kind of budget situation he’ll inherit if he becomes governor. But the former legislator from Chenoa said he would work with the Democrat-controlled General Assembly to reach consensus on how to reduce spending.

“A governor is not king of the forest,” Rutherford said during the Naperville forum, which was sponsored by the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association and the Valley Industrial Association. “You cannot go in and command it to be done.”

The other candidates offered more specifics about where they’d like to make budget cuts.

Brady, who won the 2010 GOP nomination but lost to Gov. Pat Quinn in the general election, noted he supported legislation last year to cut public-employee pensions and eliminate the state’s $100 billion unfunded liability. He says that measure – which is being challenged in court by labor unions and retired state employees – could save Illinois $1.3 billion in the first year if it’s allowed to take effect.

Rauner, a businessman from Winnetka making his first bid for public office, said he supports replacing public-worker pensions with a 401(k)-style, defined contribution plan he says would create

OBITUARIES ANTHONY C. ARNOLD Anthony C. "Tony" Arnold, age 44, died Sunday January 26, 2014 at home. Born in Joliet, Illinois, he lived in New Orleans, Louisiana and Houston, Texas before moving to South Amboy, New Jersey in 2007.

He was employed by Solar Turbines out of Pittsburgh. He served in the Illinois National Guard.

He was a member of the BPO Elks Lodge 784, South Amboy. He was an avid Harley rider and a member of the Elks Motorcycle Club.

Dog found dead in cage on side of the road in Troy Township

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com TROY TOWNSHIP – A emaciated pit bull died Tuesday morning after being left in freezing temperatures on the side of the road.

At about 7 a.m., a bus driver passing near County Line and Bell Roads in Troy Township saw the animal in a wire cage set on top of a snowbank on the east side of the road and called police.

A sheriff’s deputy arrived to find the dog already had died and waited for Will County Animal Control Officer Mindy Pomykala at the scene.

“She was a dark gray female pit bull with a pink nylon collar who appeared

extremely emaciated and malnourished,” Pomykala said.

“She was not frozen and had been left there somewhat recently.”

Pomykala said the dog had been left in the wire cage with just a blanket that was soiled with urine and feces.

“It was a really ugly sight,” she acknowledged.

There were no identifying markings on the cage or collar.

Pomykala said it did not appear the pit bull had been used for dog fighting, but was “obviously neglected.”

Pomykala asked anyone with information about this dog to call Animal Control at 815-462-5633 or Will County Sheriff’s Police at 815-727-

She said there have been no other reports of similar incidents.

The colder weather has brought animal control officers many calls from concerned pet owners asking about the wellness of animals being left outside, Pomykala said.

Animal control officers recommend all pets be brought inside in winter weather, but a doghouse on the property makes it legal for owners to have them outside.

“If you absolutely cannot bring the animal inside, set up some warm dry straw on the floor of the doghouse for them to conserve body heat,” Pomykala said.

Man arrested for posting adult video of ex-girlfriend

NEWS BRIEFS $1.6B drop in Ill. revenue predicted next year SPRINGFIELD – Illinois is expected to see a $1.58 billion drop in revenue if the state’s income tax increase rolls back as planned.

Officials from the Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability told lawmakers Tuesday the preliminary revenue forecast for the next fiscal year will be $34.4 billion. That’s down from $36 billion this year.

The drop in revenue reflects an expected decrease in the state’s income tax. The temporary hike is scheduled to drop from its current 5 percent to 3.75 percent next January.

Some Democrats want the tax increase extended but many Republicans oppose it.

Gov. Pat Quinn plans to give his budget address in March.

The event serves as the official opening of negotiations on the state budget, which lawmakers are tasked with passing before adjourning for the year.

Senate sends farm bill to Obama to sign WASHINGTON – The sweeping farm bill that Congress sent to President Obama on Tuesday has something for almost everyone, from the nation’s 47 million food stamp recipients to Southern peanut growers, Midwest corn farmers and the maple syrup industry in the Northeast.

After years of setbacks, the Senate on Tuesday sent the nearly $100 billion-a-year measure to President Barack Obama. The White House said the president will sign the bill on Friday in Michigan, the home state of Senate Agriculture Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow.

Another ‘fair’ tax grab SPRINGFIELD – Hang on to your pocketbooks, the politicians are getting restless.

They want more of your money.

Never mind that the Illinois Legislature jacked up your taxes by 67 percent back in 2011.

Because of this temporary tax hike, many of us are now paying a full 5 percent of our income to Springfield. But at least the bulk of this tax increase is set to expire in January 2015.

Now they are looking at another REEDER REPORT tax grab.

And this time they Scott are doing it under the Reeder guise of “fairness.”

Government worker unions and their political allies are pushing hard for a graduated, or “progressive,” income tax.

What this would mean is that instead of everyone paying the same percentage of his income to the state, the percentage would stair step up as a person earns more money.

But supporters of this idea face a big obstacle: the Illinois Constitution.

The constitution mandates that the state levy the same percentage rate from all taxpayers.

So there is a push now to have the Legislature put a measure on the November ballot creating a progressive income tax.

You’ll hear some malarkey about this being about “fairness.”

Don’t believe it.

It’s about money, plain and simple.

The state is looking for ways to collect more, but the politicians can’t just come out and say that so they are using code words like “equitable” or “fair.”

The fact of the matter is, the state already has a progressive income tax.

Don’t believe me?

Well, just consider these numbers: • A household earning $15,000 in Illinois pays on average 1.9 percent of its income to the state.

• A family earning $30,000 pays 2.9 percent.

• A taxpayer earning $75,000 pays 3.8 percent.

What’s happening here is something called the “earned income tax credit.”

We could get into a long discourse on whether it is good public policy or not. I have my reservations.

Regardless, Illinois already has a means to give tax breaks to lower-income people and has been employing it quite aggressively for many years.

Farm bill falls short of actual reform It took two years for Washington to get a farm bill ready and what’s on the table is something Sen. Chuck Grassley can’t in good conscience vote to support. Is the version recently passed by the House and to be voted on in the Senate really the best we can do?

The farm bill must strike a balance between helping the small family farm withstand market price volatility and being financially responsible to taxpayers.

What we ended up with – after two years of debate – is neither of those things.

It didn’t have to be this way.

From the beginning of discussion about rewriting the farm bill, Grassley, R-Iowa, has advocated for subsidy reform. He championed provisions that would have capped farm payments and accurately defined who should be considered a farmer. Those measures were adopted in both the House and Senate versions by wide margins. Then, a funny thing

happened on the way to the floor.

Changes in the conference committee eliminated those provisions – which would have saved taxpayers nearly $400 million. The way it stands now, 10 percent of farmers receive 70 percent of the benefits in the farm bill. It does nothing to limit the amount of subsidies a farmer with the right lawyer can accrue.

The changes in committee also failed to close the loophole that makes it easy for non-farmers to receive farm subsidies. So much for Grassley’s common-sense approach limiting entities to one non-farming manager.

It was time to get a farm bill done. Farmers needed to know that the crop insurance program they rely on remains in place. And the nutrition program reforms are a positive step. All in all, the bill does save $16.6 billion, which sounds like a pretty good number until you consider that it will spend nearly a trillion dollars.

Chipping away at our government’s $17 trillion debt is not a job that begins next year or even next week. Our elected officials need to look at every opportunity right now to save money in every piece of legislation that comes across the desk. The farm bill provided an opportunity to improve the system through reform and save millions at the same time. And a conference committee went out of its way to do neither of those things. Missed opportunities have become the calling card of Congress.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and the Obama administration have the authority to include a rule regarding the number of people who can be eligible for farm subsidies. Administration officials should use the full force of their positions to do what Congress failed to do. As for further reforms, we’ll add them to the list of missed opportunities.

With the state Illinois is in, we have plenty of work to do Pat Quinn’s view of the state is much rosier than ours. We expected the governor to be optimistic about the direction Illinois is going.

He’s a glass-half-full kind of guy – plus he’s running for re-election.

Quinn said “Illinois is making a comeback” during his State of the State speech and pushed for spending more on early-childhood education, increasing the minimum wage, doubling the earned income tax credit and other initiatives.

“Of course, we still have financial challenges ahead.

And we’ll be talking about the best way to meet those challenges in the upcoming budget. But the fact is, our recovery is strengthening every day. And we’re leading that recovery in a way that cares for working families.”

In our view, the recovery has a long way to go. Here

are what we consider Illinois’ Seven Deadly Sins: Pension debt: Illinois’ pension liability is the worst in the nation. Legislation passed last year was supposed to save the state $160 billion over 30 years, which would be good news if it were to happen. The savings number has been downgraded to $145 billion ...

Unemployment: Illinois’ jobless rate is 8.6 percent, the third-highest in the nation – and that’s an improvement.

The state had the second-highest unemployment rate for much of last year ...

Bill backlog: The state owed vendors $4,952,831,711.68 as of last week ...

Infrastructure: If Illinois doesn’t invest more in its roads and bridges, the Transportation for Illinois Coalition says, 1 of every 3 miles of roads and 1 in every 10 bridges will be in unaccept-

able condition by 2018.

Taxes: Illinois’ “temporary” individual tax increase passed in 2011 is supposed to fall from 5 percent to 3.85 percent next Jan. 1. There already have been moves to make the tax increase permanent or replace it with a graduated income tax ...

Credit rating: Another worst in the nation. A poor credit rating means the state pays higher interest on bonds, with the result that taxpayers get less for their money when it comes to road, bridge or school improvements.

Exodus: More people are leaving Illinois than moving in, according to Allied Van Lines, United Van Lines and Atlas Van Lines. That’s good for their business, but not good for business in Illinois.

Progressive income tax means greater burden • REEDER Continued from page 21 So this progressive income tax isn’t about giving relief to poor folks – it’s about making middle-class and upper-income people pay more.

In January the state income tax rate is slated to drop to 3.75 percent from its current temporary level of 5 percent.

But guess what. Under a proposal by state Rep. Naomi Jakobsson, D-Champaign, every Illinois family earning $18,000 or more would pay a top rate of 4 percent or more.

I’ve never considered a household making $18,000 per year to be rich. But under Jacobsson’s plan those families would pay a higher rate next year than they

otherwise would. Of course the earned income tax would apply for some of these folks, but still, that’s a pretty low level to start imposing a higher rate.

Also, her plan calls for every family earning more than $58,000 to pay a top rate of 6 percent, which is a higher top rate than the current temporary top rate.

And the rates keep ratcheting up from there to a full 9 percent.

In fairness, that is just one of the proposals involving a progressive income tax. We really don’t know where the Legislature would set the rates – and if the voters will give them permission by amending the state constitution.

But if other states are any guide, a progressive income

tax means a greater burden for middle-class families.

Missouri imposes its highest rate on families earning more than $9,000. Our neighbor to the west, Iowa, kicks in its highest rate for families making $67,230. Kentucky kicks in its top rate for those families making $75,000.

We aren’t talking about Rockefellers or Vanderbilts here.

A progressive tax isn’t about tax relief for the poor – we already do that through the earned income tax credit.

It’s about collecting more money from more people, folks like you and me.

Steelmen use defense to knock off SWS Blue leader

BY DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Central had missed just enough free throws in the final minute Tuesday night to leave the door open in the SouthWest Suburban Blue showdown against league leader Bolingbrook.

However, Antonio Dyson helped slam it shut.

With Central leading 5554, the 6-foot-4 senior forward swiped the ball in the backcourt from Bolingbrook standout guard Prentiss Nixon, ran some clock and drew Nixon’s fifth foul with 9 seconds remaining.

He made both free throws, and the 57-54 upset became reality when the Raiders misfired on two hurried threepoint attempts just before the buzzer.

“They got us twice before, and the last time was tragic,” Dyson said of the 91-62 loss in the third-place game at the McDipper Christmas Tournament.

“We’ve been waiting for this one,” Steelmen coach Jeff Corcoran said. “It was hard to prepare for them at the McDipper when it was our fourth game there.

“After the struggles that we’ve had lately, we needed this. The difference tonight was the kids. They made the commitment. They had their own meetings, and they’ve been talking together in the locker room after practice.”

Dyson said defense did the trick for Central (13-7, 5-3).

But until his late steal, Bolingbrook (14-4, 7-1) was in position to spoil the Steelmen’s plans.

“His motor never stops,”

Corcoran said of Dyson. “With his length, it was a good situation for him to be in there at the end.”

“He [Nixon] went by me the previous time and they missed the shot and I got the rebound,” Dyson said. “He tried making the same move and I was ready for it.”

Dyson said he “wanted to dunk so bad” after his steal, but he glanced at the 0:17 on the clock and made the wise decision to pull the ball out.

He finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Jonah Coble led the way with 20 points. Jarvis Northington chipped in with 12, six in the fourth quarter including two free throws with 0:37 left that gave the Steelmen their 55-54 lead. He and Dyson were a combined 8-of-8 from the free throw line.

“The previous times we played Bolingbrook, I thought we were ready but we weren’t,” Northington said. “I just tried to stay focused and told myself to do what I had to do.”

Central was without one of its big men, 6-5 Jaylen McGee, who sprained an ankle at practice Monday.

Gage Davis led Bolingbrook with 20 points and Nixon added 11. Shakur Triplett chipped in nine, and Kenny Williams scored all of his nine in the second half. The Raiders, who led 31-25 at half, outrebounded the Steelmen 30-27 but committed 23 turnovers.

“We made too many mistakes,” Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost said. “We didn’t follow the game plan the way we have been doing. We didn’t execute, missed opportunities, turned the ball over too much.”

“He sits down, crosses his legs and there’s a hole in his shoe.

“My mother notices it and says we’ll call you. I said, ‘Mom, what are you doing?’ She says if he can’t afford a new pair of shoes, how do we know his check is good?’ “ • “[Former Sox manager] Al Lopez was a legend in his own mind,” McLain said.

“Three of us young prospects were in the Sox system together. Dave DeBusschere threw a fastball hard and so straight. Bruce Howard had a nice breaking ball. And there was me. They couldn’t protect all three of us.

“Lopez told me, ‘I don’t think you will be a major

league pitcher.’ We had an intrasquad game where the loser between Howard and me would be put on waivers.

I lost, 1-0. Dave Nicholson hit the devil out of one.

“I went on waivers and Detroit grabbed me. The next September, I pitched my debut against the White Sox and won, 4-3. I told them, ‘Thank you for the biggest break of my life.’ I spent eight years with the Tigers and played on some great teams.”

• Mickey Mantle was McLain’s idol. “What he could do left- and right-handed was unbelievable,” he said.

“Al Kaline was the best I saw on a day-to-day basis, having played with him.”

The story goes that McLain intentionally served up Mantle’s 535th home run, passing Jimmy Foxx on the all-time list. McLain admits he did his best.

The Tigers were beating the Yankees 6-1 with two outs in the eighth inning late in 1968, and McLain already had his 30th win.

McLain had the crowd in stitches as he recalled catcher Jim Price coming out to the mound after each very hittable pitch, still failing to get with the program, and plate umpire Emmett Ashford joining in the ploy.

Finally, with two strikes on him, Mantle takes the grooved pitch off the facade of the upper deck. He thanks McLain as he rounds

the bases.

The next batter is Joe Pepitone. He hollers for the same pitch. The next thing he knows, he’s picking himself up after eluding a fastball four inches behind his ear.

“Joe Pepitone wore a toupee,” McLain said. “That’s the only time it was ever separated from his head on the field.”

• In 1971, McLain was traded to Washington, whose manager was Ted Williams, one of his least favorite people.

“Ted was the nastiest man ever,” McLain said.

“I was shagging flies in batting practice with Curt Flood one day and he walks out there and says to us, ‘There’s only one leader, only one headliner, on this team and it’s not an active player.’

“One day in the fourth inning, with us leading 5-1, he walks out and tells everybody he’s taking Flood out for defensive reasons.

Curt walks into the dugout, to the locker room, showers, leaves and never looks back.

“He embarrassed one of the best centerfielders ever.”

What Thomas and McLain have in common, besides being outstanding former major leaguers, is they proved doubters wrong.

For different reasons, there was wondering in the local sports community about how well they would perform and be received.

I heard from several who attended the Old Timers’ banquet how good they thought McLain was.

The stories from baseball’s last 30-game winner and his answers to questions from the crowd were entertaining and informative.

A sampling: • On the same day McLain graduated from Mount Carmel in the morning, he signed with the White Sox for $17,500 in the afternoon.

“The Yankees’ guy comes in a blue suit,” McLain said,

Carlos Boozer should just stop talking Carlos Boozer apparently gets paid by the word.

A Bulls telecast is a competition between the announcers and the power forward with the very loud mouth. Boozer keeps a running commentary going while in the game, shouting out thought after thought, most of it coming through the TV clearly.

For much of the night, we get a run-on sentence built on a mixture of reflexive utterances and, I suspect, an attempt to give the appearance of total engagement in the game. He talks the best defense in the NBA, despite compelling evidence that he wouldn’t know weakside help from a tree stump.

But now he has brought different words to the proceedings, and, like the pixels in your TV set, they show true

That would be Taj Gibson, not Boozer. And for all of Gibson’s inconsistency when it comes to outside shooting the past five seasons, he has been better offensively than Boozer in the fourth quarter this season.

Boozer informed reporters of his irritation Monday.

“I think I should be out there, but it’s [Thibodeau’s] choice,” he said. “He makes the decisions out there. I play;

I don’t coach. He coaches, so he decides that. But, honestly, he’s been doing that a lot since I’ve been here, not putting me [in the game] in the fourth quarter. Sometimes we win.

More times than not, we don’t.

But that’s his choice.”

He went on: “It’s very frustrating, especially when I’ve got a great game going or what have you. Obviously, as a competitor, you want to be out there to help your team win.

Especially when the game is close, you can do things that can help your team win. And not being out there, all you can do is really cheer them on. But that’s [Thibodeau’s] choice.”

The key phrase in all of that is “when I’ve got a great game going.” It was partly hidden under a blanket of team concerns, but Boozer couldn’t help

himself. This is about him. By “great game,” he means “lots of points.”

I’m sure he’s perplexed about why this story has blown up the way it has. That’s because he lost his self-awareness somewhere along the way. Let’s be clear: He’s not alone in that regard. The NBA is full of people who can show you scientific proof that the sun revolves around them. But if you told Boozer that he’d be the next mayor of Chicago or that he’d light the torch at the 2016 Olympics, he’d start picking out clothes to wear.

His comments Monday were teed up perfectly for Thibodeau to drive down the fairway. Boozer, of all people, upset that he wasn’t playing in the fourth quarter? Amnesty day can’t come soon enough.

“Sometimes you have to sacrifice what might be best for yourself for what’s best for the team,” Thibodeau said.

“That’s what I love about Taj. Taj could be upset he’s not starting, [but] he never complains. Whatever you ask him to do, he just goes out there and does it. To me, what he does speaks volumes. He’s not talking about it; he’s going out there and doing it.’’

I wish Thibodeau had borrowed from former Bulls coach Scott Skiles, who didn’t miss a beat when a reporter once asked him how Eddy Curry could be a better rebounder.

“Jump,” Skiles said.

And Boozer could be a better defender by defending.

LOS ANGELES – Nick Leddy is learning to speak up.

It’s not easy for the soft-spoken Blackhawks’ defenseman.

“It’s not natural for me,” Leddy said. “I was never the loudest guy in the locker room in high school and college. I liked to lead by example.

“But I’m working on it. It’s coming along. You look around our locker room, the best vocal guys are our leaders. So when you’re a good vocal guy, it’s always good.”

It’s unlikely Leddy ever will be a rah-rah guy in the locker room. It’s on the ice where communication is vital – especially for a defenseman who plays with a different partner from game to game or even shift to shift. And one other thing that plays into Leddy’s game: “Demanding the puck,” he said.

“I’ve really been trying to be more demanding. I think I’ve gotten better at it.”

As a puck-moving defenseman, the more Leddy has the puck the better. He took two big

continously, because there’s no shooting lanes anymore.

The number of people blocking shots, and the action you get off one-timers creates a lot of activity.

“We’ll take any kind of production, but Nick has the ability to do a lot of those things with the puck. Shooting is one thing that should complement his offensive ability.”

The goal was Leddy’s first in 18 games. He has seven goals, 17 assists and is a plus-13 for the season – not exactly breakout numbers. But enough improvement to keep the Hawks satisfied.

Leddy had six goals and 18 points and was a plus-15 in 48 games last season. But he struggled in the playoffs – no goals, two assists and a minus-8 as his playing time dipped to token minutes in the Stanley Cup Final.

“He’s on a steady course here,” Quenneville said. “I think he’s been on the right track. We like the progress.”

Teammate Michal Rozsival has noticed the difference in Leddy this season.

More than half Americans plan to follow Olympics

By RONALD BLUM The Associated Press NEW YORK – Just more than half of Americans surveyed plan to watch or follow the Winter Olympics, according to an Associated Press-GfK Poll, and one-third of respondents said they have only a little or no confidence about Russia’s ability to safeguard safety at the Sochi Games that start this week.

The likely audience for the Olympics is on the older side, with 65 percent age 50 or over planning to follow the quadrennial event compared with 47 percent among younger adults, according to the survey, conducted from Jan. 17-21.

Although 61 percent of whites are interested in following the Olympics, the percentage among nonwhites dips to 43 percent. Sixty-nine percent from households with incomes of $100,000 or more plan to watch, with 26 percent in that group intending to avoid spoilers.

Among those planning to watch or follow, the percentage identifying figure skating as their favorite rises to 35 percent. There’s a gender gap, however, with 55 percent of women who plan to watch calling figure skating their favorite, compared with 15 percent of men.

Among men, ice hockey runs even with figure skating; 16 percent call it their favorite.

Coordinator Robin English, of Shorewood, first tasted Snedden’s signature brisket at a bar mitzvah and immediately knew Snedden’s food was perfect for her event.

“It was tender and not bland; he had rubbed a lot of spices into it,” English said.

“It was not tough, like some briskets are.”

Snedden, of Frankfort and owner of Moes-On-Site Catering, grew up around good food. Snedden recalled hanging around the kitchen while his grandmother and mother prepared homemade sausage, noodles and sauces.

His neighbor owned a restaurant; by age 12, Snedden was bussing tables.

Snedden started tailgating in 1982. Twenty years ago, he began smoking meat. He never intended to start a business.

“I just did it for the love of cooking,” Snedden said.

“Then someone hired me and then the next person hired me and then I just kept on doing it.”

Snedden brings a large grill to most events. He smokes his briskets eight hours, puts them on the grill to “seal” them, adds “special sauces to finish it off,” slices them “pencil thick” and then serves them as either sandwiches or with “some

Depending on the time frame, Snedden will smoke the meat at home, on-site or even “on the way” to the event. In addition to brisket, Snedden also smokes chicken (his second popular menu item) and turkeys.

“They go right off the grill to the plate,” Snedden said.

Turkeys receive an herbal steam bath before going onto the rotisseries above smoke boxes. Snedden’s sausage is not homemade but when customers request it, Snedden purchases it from trusted specialty suppliers.

Snedden also roasts entire pigs and other whole animals. Other menu items include seafood, fried chicken, ham, pastas and a wide variety of side dishes. All gravies and sauces, include the barbecue sauce, is made

by Snedden, from scratch and on-site.

“We do pretty much everything,” Snedden said.

The menu for the “Brews and Blues” event, while not finalized, will probably include brisket, chicken,

“A lot of people know we [our congregation] exists,” English said, “but this is an informal way to welcome them into our community.”

The catering business has not replaced Snedden’s zeal for tailgating. He cooks, he

said, simply for the love of cooking. As a season ticket holder, Snedden attends – and tailgates – every home game of the Chicago Bears.

“And some that are not at home,” Snedden said, “if they’re close enough.”

Historical museum looks to the future

Wadsworth donation and endowment fund will help

JOLIET – Greg Peerbolte wants to raise the profile of the Joliet Area Historical Museum with new exhibits and more support from the community.

Peerbolte, the museum’s executive director, has plans to expose the museum to a larger audience and tell them the stories of the city through exhibits such as “The Emergence of Joliet: Art, Industry & Urbanization,” which shows how the Joliet transformed into a city in the late 1920s and early 1930s.

It’s the kind of exhibit that may please many residents.

“You’ll walk away being more proud of Joliet,” he said.

Helping the cause is a donation the museum received from Brent Wadsworth, founder of Plainfield-based Wadsworth Golf Construction Co., on Jan. 30. The donation, the amount of which has not been disclosed, will be used to begin an endowment fund for the museum.

Peerbolte called it a “game changer” for the museum.

The museum, which opened in 2002, is a nonprofit organization that receives about 50 percent of its funding from the city. Peerbolte said the museum is financially stable, and the staff is always looking for opportunities to gain more community support and hold more special events.

Since 2009, the museum has received more than 20,000 visitors annually, he said.

The museum’s latest exhibit, “The Emergence of Joliet,” gathers illustrations of the city in its transformational period, along with tools and devices typically used in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Popular songs from the period add to the senses of the exhibit, he said.

The exhibit also connects this period to the present day, with new developments in the downtown area such

as Joliet Junior College City Campus Center.

Peerbolte said it’s one of the museum’s more edgy and cerebral exhibits, but it’s the kind that shows how the museum staff and its partners seek to tell more Joliet-centric stories.

“It’s going to be a good template for work on other exhibits in the future,” he said.

The illustrations of the city in the exhibit were created by Adele Fay Williams, a journalist, artist and civic leader who worked for the The Herald-News in the early 20th Century. The drawings

by Williams, who once stud-

ied under Fresh Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro, show scenes such as a rainy evening on Chicago Street.

The creation of the exhibit was the result of a partnership with the museum staff and Lewis University staff.

More than 20 history and art students from the university were involved, said Dennis Cremin, Lewis University history professor.

He said in the 1920s more than 50 percent of the nation’s population became city dwellers and Williams’ drawings capture that transitional time.

In “The Merchant of Venice,” William Shakespeare wrote, “At the length, the truth will out.”

Whenever you play bridge, dwell at length on your long suits because, in truth, they will usually generate extra tricks.

Some players are too wedded to high-card points and forget to add value for a long suit.

When I watched this deal being played, I liked South’s oneno-trump response. His hand was so soft, with defensive, not offensive, values. (He thought about passing, but no one would do that today.) Then North surprised me by raising to two no-trump. Yes, he had only 17 high-card points, but he should have added two points for his six-card suit and jumped to three no-trump.

True, if West had been psychic and led a diamond, the contract would probably have gone down two. But he understandably chose a spade, selecting the 10, showing zero or two higher honors by partnership agreement.

South won with his queen and played a club to dummy’s queen.

East should have ducked this, which would have perhaps tempted South into an indiscretion. (He might have, for example, played a heart to his queen.

Then West could have won and returned to a heart.) However, East won the trick and shifted to a low heart. West won with his ace and returned a heart. In the fullness of time, declarer took nine tricks.

It would have been much better play for South to have led his club jack at trick two, so he could have stayed in his hand to repeat the club finesse if it were winning (or, here, East ducked).

Prolonged fatigue can accompany mononucleosis Dear Doctor K: What is mononucleosis, and why is it called the “kissing disease”?

Dear Reader: Mononucleosis, or “mono,” is an illness caused by several viruses, primarily the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Mono was nicknamed the “kissing disease” because EBV commonly is transmitted during kissing.

The virus lives in different parts of the body, including the throat.

The virus can leave throat cells and enter the saliva.

Most viruses that infect us enter our body, maybe cause temporary illness, and then get killed by the immune system.

EBV is different. It is a member of the herpesvirus family, a cousin to the virus that causes cold sores and genital sores. Once any member of the herpesvirus family infects you, it remains in your body for the rest of your life. The immune system can suppress it, but cannot eliminate it.

In the United States, most people get infected with EBV when they are teenagers or young adults. When a person is first infected with EBV, the virus does not always cause mononucleosis.

Sometimes EBV causes only a mild illness or no illness at all.

When EBV does cause mono, the first symptoms typically include fever, headaches, muscle aches

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff and unusual fatigue. The fatigue may be overwhelming, compelling a person to sleep for 12 to 16 hours at a stretch.

These symptoms are quickly followed by sore throat, enlarged lymph nodes, joint aches, loss of appetite, a red rash (usually on the chest), abdominal pain and an enlarged spleen.

The spleen is a small organ near the stomach. In rare cases, an enlarged spleen can rupture, causing life-threatening internal bleeding. It is important to protect the spleen from rupture.

A person who develops mono should avoid strenuous activities, especially contact sports, for at least four weeks. They should wait even longer if their doctor finds their spleen is still enlarged.

Symptoms usually are most intense during the first two to four weeks of the illness. But some symptoms, especially fatigue, can last for several months or longer. A study published in 2006, organized by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), found that 11

percent of people with new EBV infections leading to mono developed chronic fatigue syndrome and remained ill a year or more after the initial infection.

There is no medical cure for mononucleosis. Most treatment focuses on making the person more comfortable. Recovery usually calls for getting plenty of rest and fluids and treating symptoms. Cold drinks, frozen desserts and gargling with salt water can help to relieve minor sore throat pain. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) can help fight fever and body aches.

Prednisone can shrink extremely swollen tonsils.

This disease is most contagious during its acute stage, when the affected person still has a fever. The patient does not need to be kept isolated from others, but he or she should avoid kissing others while feeling ill.

Also avoid sharing food, drinks or eating utensils during the first few weeks of the illness.

So, the “kissing disease” is real. But kissing is rarely a danger to your health.

Girl’s ‘best’ friend avoids her at school Dr. Wallace: My best friend and I have known each other for more than six years, and for the past four years have been best friends.

About halfway through the school year, she started hanging around a very popular crowd.

The Washington Post Like many “Saturday Night Live” veterans, Will Forte came up through improv group the Groundlings, where his classmates included Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig. But his initial gigs were on the writing side – first as a staffer on the short-lived “Jenny McCarthy Show” and then on the “Late Show With David Letterman” and “That ’70s Show.”

And those experiences inform Forte’s acting.

“If I were doing somebody else’s sketch, in my head I’d be thinking about if they were happy with this. I would be very tentative,” Forte recalls. He admits that “SNL” executive producer Lorne Michaels noticed this reservation and almost didn’t bring him back to the cast after his second season. “The stuff I would write on my own, I would always do 100 percent, but he knew I was tentative with the other stuff.”

One of those characters was MacGruber, an outsized send-up of MacGyver and ’80s nostalgia. When Forte left “SNL” in 2010, it was on the heels of a “MacGruber” movie spinoff written with “SNL” friends John Solomon and Jorma Taccone and co-starring Rudolph and Wiig. “We made exactly the movie we wanted to make,” Forte says.

This made the critical and commercial failure of it harder to process despite the slow crawl it’s now making towards cult status. “We’re going to write a sequel at some point, but I don’t know if anyone will let us make it.”

Forte, 43, has a disarming humbleness about him. When asked about his recent turn to dramatic roles, he offered: “It’s hard enough getting comedy acting jobs – it’s not like I’m the go-to guy for comedy roles – so I didn’t think it was anywhere in the realm of possibility.”

That realm opened up when Oscar-nominated short-film director Steph Green approached him about appearing in her feature debut, “Run and Jump,” which received its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival last year and is available on video on demand. “I don’t know why Steph Green thought of me for it, but we have the same agent. It’s a small-budget movie, and I guess she just had an inkling that I’d be right for the role. I thought the script was really cool and what the heck, I get to go to Ireland.

It seemed like an interesting thing to try.

Saturday Night Live veteran Will Forte has been starring in more dramatic roles, such as the short-film “Run and Jump” and director Alexander Payne’s “Nebraska.”

I thought if I suck at this, it’ll just stay over there in Ireland.”

He remembers calling friends during the first week of filming to voice mounting regrets and suspicions that he was out of his depth. “I was very self-conscious about how I was doing and hadn’t any of my major scenes yet, but I was so nervous.” Once they started to film those scenes, he began to get used to the vulnerability.

“Like with ‘Nebraska,’ it’s much closer to who I am in real life,” Forte explains of his character, Ted Fielding, a brilliant American doctor who moves in with a family to observe the young husband, who has just suffered a rare stroke that has drastically altered his personality. Despite his sensitivity, Fielding is quite clueless in identifying his own emotions.

“Everyone seems to be like this,” Forte relates. “You’re so good at giving advice when somebody goes through a breakup. You have all the answers. But when you go through your own breakup, you can’t take any of your own advice.

It’s so much easier to look from the outside in.”

Those who remember Forte parading on screen in “MacGruber” completely naked – while “holding” a strategically placed stick of celery – might find it hard to believe the actor could be susceptible to shyness.

“You do things in comedy that seem like they would be embarrassing, but it’s nowhere near as trying to seem realistically emotionally open in front of a camera,” he says. “It’s really terrifying.”

Once he got over those reservations, he was eager to jump back in when Alexander Payne (one of Forte’s favorite directors) was looking for a lead for “Nebraska.” “I was always such a fan of his because the stuff I would do in comedy was big and absurd most of the time and watching his stuff, it all comes from such a grounded place. I always had a real intense respect for that.” He wasn’t expecting to get the part, but he did.

“Alexander Payne is the master.

It was such a great experience. I will never forget it,” he gushes while remembering his initial fear about never even having taken an acting class when his co-star was Hollywood icon Bruce Dern. “Here’s this legend who’s worked with these amazing people: John Wayne, Jack Nicholson, et cetera. I just thought: Is he going to be comparing me with these guys?”

Dern and Forte spent a lot of time in the pickup truck in which their father and son characters drive to Nebraska to claim a fake sweepstakes prize that the father has pinned his hopes to – not just to buy a new truck, as he often claims, but to regain the respect of his son who has his own reasons for wanting an excuse to leave town.

“It’s hard to put a label on it because it has really funny parts, but I wouldn’t call it a comedy,” Forte says of “Nebraska.” Indeed, there is a melancholic cloud that hangs over the film’s wide-stretching landscapes.

Forte’s next project brings him back to writing, but it’s walking the same fine line between comedy and drama.

He’s developing a series, “The Last Man on Earth,” for Fox that imagines a virus that has wiped out the entire world, leaving just one man, who discovers miraculously that a woman’s survived, too. “The answer to his prayers, another person. They can restart the population, but the only problem is they hate each other. They don’t get along, so they’re forced to try to figure that out,” Forte says with a sly smile.

Road rage claim of self-defense didn’t work

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Lemont man convicted of second-degree murder for punching another driver during a 2011 road rage encounter in Romeoville faces between three and 20 years in prison.

Christopher Yeoman claimed he was defending himself when he threw the punch that eventually led to the death of 64-year-old Frank Egas. But a jury decided he was guilty of second-degree murder after deliberating for five hours Monday night.

Yeoman, 41, has yet to be sentenced. He has no crimi-

nal record. He could possibly receive probation for the second-degree murder conviction instead of serving up to 20 years in prison on that charge.

But the aggravated battery charges, for which Yeoman Christopher also was found Yeoman guilty, are not probational offenses, so he will serve at least three years behind bars, according to the Will County State’s Attorney’s office.

Yeoman, his wife and their three children were riding in a minivan on New Avenue

when they got behind a red Toyota Solara that remained stopped at 135th Street instead of turning on the green arrow.

Yeoman testified when he gave a “hurry up” tap of the horn, Egas, the driver of the Solara, laid on his own horn and appeared irate.

The two vehicles headed west on 135th Street where Egas swerved in front of the Yeoman’s minivan several times to keep them from passing him, Yeoman said. When the vehicles reached Route 53, Christopher and Amanda Yeoman got out to “converse” with Egas about his driving before walking back to their van. Witnesses said Egas re-

mained by his car, but “pointed to his chin ... telling [Yeoman] ‘Hit me.’ ” Yeoman ran back and punched Egas in the face, knocking him to the ground where the back of his head struck the pavement. Experts in forensic pathology testified Egas suffered brain injuries that led to his death three months later at the age of 64.

Yeoman and defense attorney Cliff Johnson never denied he struck Egas but argued he was “defending himself” from the belligerent man. Jurors didn’t buy it.

“Christopher Yeoman sucker punched Mr. Egas out of sheer anger and now a se-

nior citizen is dead, the victim of irrational violence,” Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said in a written statement after the verdict was reached. “[Assistant State’s Attorneys Christopher Koch and Peter Wilkes] left no doubt in the minds of jurors that this was a murder resulting from a senseless incident of road rage and not a case of self-defense.”

Yeoman was convicted of second-degree murder, aggravated battery of a senior citizen, aggravated battery on a public way and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm. He is scheduled to be sentenced April 4.

Lincoln Awards are given in recognition for efforts to promote tourism. Limacher had been nominated by Robert Navarro, chief executive officer of the Heritage Corridor Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Possible snow removal changes on agenda for Lockport council

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – City council members may decide if residents who push snow from their driveways and sidewalks into city streets will get fined.

At Wednesday’s City Council meeting, council members will learn more about a proposed ordinance to fine residents if they toss snow or ice outside of

their driveway or sidewalk, Fourth Ward Alderman Denise Marynowski said. She said the fine could be $25.

She said she is waiting to see what Public Works officials will say about the ordinance since they are requesting it.

“But I lean toward finding it agreeable because it’s annoying when you come down a street and you got these piles of snow here and there,” she said.

City workers have to plow areas again when residents shovel their snow into the streets, she said, and it can become a hazard.

Second Ward Ald. Kelly Turner doesn’t find the proposed ordinance agreeable.

He said residents, especially senior citizens, already have difficulties from trying to get rid of snow that sometimes block their driveway.

“It’s a hardship and who

isn’t tired of the snow?” he said.

At Wednesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, council members also are set to learn about a proposal to get rid of charges to vehicle stickers by raising electric bill taxes by 1 percent, Marynowski said.

She said she considered it an unfair tax because people who don’t have a car and don’t buy vehicle stickers as a result will have to pay more

for an electric bill.

Turner also opposes the idea.

The council also is scheduled to consider an intergovernmental agreement between the Will/Grundy Major Crimes Task Force and city officials.

Wednesday’s City Council meeting will begin at 7 p.m. and will be followed by the Committee of the Whole meeting at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, 222 E. Ninth St.

Residents voice disapproval of board members

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Township Park District regular board meeting turned into a joke for residents attending Tuesday evening.

Residents sarcastically laughed all evening at comments made by board President Peter Hurtado, Vice President Janet Silosky and Commissioner Peter Steinys on agenda items.

“They’ve turned the park district into a laughing stock,” outspoken board critic Jamey Alwood said about the three commissioners forming a board majority and approving several questionable decisions in the past nine months.

Local elected officials also attended the meeting, chiding the board majority for being irresponsible to taxpayers.

“This is a fiasco,” Plainfield Village Trustee Margie Bonuchi said, speaking as a village resident. “That is such an abuse and misuse of your responsibilities. And you should be shameful.”

Plainfield Township Trustee Matthew Starr and members of the Plainfield Township Republican Organization attended the meeting. Starr spoke to the board, specifically targeting Silosky for allegedly demanding the organization to support the board majority.

After Silosky revealed a story that alleged Hurtado using the park district for his own financial gain during a special board meeting Jan. 29, more accusations of nepotism emerged Tuesday.

Members of the public spoke out against the park district approving IT contracts

related to former Executive Director Garrett Peck’s business, Magiktech, and Steinys allegedly being involved with his son-in-law getting a job with the park district’s maintenance staff.

The board also heard from Hitchcock Design Group, the company that entered into an agreement with Peck in November, before his resignation, to replace the park district’s planning department.

Steve Konters, a Hitchcock representative, introduced the company to the board and answered questions about the services Hitchcock is providing, including finalizing plans for the DuPage River Trail and bridge.

The board discussed whether Hitchcock would be retained for services in the future.

“Obviously, this is not the best time for you to be here,” Commissioner Mary Kay Ludemann said to Konters, drawing more sarcastic laughs from residents.

Ludemann and Commissioner Larry Newton said they were against continuing with Hitchcock because in the end, it might cost more than re-forming a new planning department.

Interim Executive Director Gene Coldwater said former Superintendent of Planning Cameron Bettin has been helping the park district by working with Hitchcock as part of his consulting role created from his exit contract.

The board approved a public social media policy for the park district, and the majority – Ludemann and Newton dissented – approved a change to the board manual that could allow one-year terms to the board.

In pushing forward with Mayor Tom Giarrante’s call for an investigation into an apparent leak of documents relating to an ongoing Evergreen Terrace lawsuit, Joliet City Attorney Jeff Plyman sought approval of council members Tuesday night to meet with the Will County State’s Attorney.

“I received a call from the state’s attorneys office to meet with them a few weeks ago, and since it involves attorney-client matters and closed session matters, I needed permission from the council,” Plyman said following Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

The state’s attorneys office will look into whether anything illegal took place when the legal document – prepared

by Plyman and distributed to council members during a closed session – ended up in the hands of Evergreen Terrace apartment owners “without explanation,” he said.

“The review will be centered on the release of a document … and whether or not that document was released without authority to third parties,” Plyman said.

The apartment owners are involved in an ongoing condemnation case with city officials over ownership of the Evergreen Terrace complex.

Council members agreed to the investigation last month during a closed session.

Council member Larry Hug suggested Tuesday that the city release all closed session tapes relating to the decade-long legal battle, but only after the lawsuit is settled.

“I also want to get it out there ahead of time that as soon as we’re done with this case …

I will be moving to release not only the minutes but the tapes going all the way back to 2004.

The public has a right to know what has happened once we’re done with this,” Hug said.

In other news, the Joliet City Council Economic Development Committee recommended to council members Tuesday night to hire the Birmingham-based retail consult-

ing firm, Retail Strategies LLC, in efforts to bring more business to the area.

But before the council decides whether to hire the company, Mayor Tom Giarrante, who chairs the economic development committee, said he wants to invite Retail Strategies LLC to the city’s strategy session this weekend so council members can hear from the company firsthand. The sessions are scheduled for 6 p.m.

Feb. 11 and 12 at Fire Station 1. They are open to the public.

“The presentations that them and other two companies gave were given to the committee only,” Giarrante said. “This way, the council can hear what this company has to offer.”

The invitation to present comes after the three-member committee heard separate presentations over the past few months from Retail Strategies LLC, Buxton, and Retail Coach, all of which specialize in data analysis and linking municipalities with retailers.

Buxton also was a front-runner among committee members, but Giarrante told the council he received an email that the city’s contact for Buxton recently resigned.

Council member Larry Hug said “the loss of our contact [with Buxton] and the failure of a new contact to show up” was not the only factor that made him lean towards Retail Strategies LLC. Hug said he thought all companies were “very well qualified” but liked how Retail Strategies would “go a step further” by reaching out to the retail industry on behalf of the city. He said he was initially torn between the Fort Worth, Texas-based Buxton and Retail Strategies. Cost, experience and services were the biggest factors, he said.

“Retail Strategies comes with a lot of experience. They actually not only set you up to recruit, they do the recruiting for you of individual businesses,” Hug said.

The recommendation calls for the city to enter into a three-year contract totaling $100,000, with the first year costing $50,000.

Man faces multiple charges for alleged assault on ex-girlfriend JOLIET – Justin E. Ruch, 33, appeared in court Monday on charges of menacing his ex-girlfriend.

Before seeing the judge on those charges, the New Lenox man was handcuffed and arrested by Will County Sheriff’s deputies for allegedly threatening the woman when she was at the courthouse last week seeking an

order of protection against him.

Ruch also is now facing charges of criminal sexual assault after evidence was processed by the crime lab from the initial incident, Will County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said.

On Jan. 9, a 32-year-old woman called police to her Joliet Township home after Ruch allegedly broke down the front door, threw her across a bed and sexually as-

pear in court Monday.

“On Friday, the victim was in court with the assistant state’s attorney to extend the order of protection she had against him when he came in and sat directly behind her,” Hoffmeyer said.

Ruch now faces nine felonies and two misdemeanors, according to jail records and would need to put up yet another $150,000 bond to be released before his next court appearance.
